John Muir Trail

sierra hiking tours

July 6-31 August 10-September 4

  • Description

The John Muir Trail is one of the finest wilderness hikes to be found anywhere in the world and the trip of a lifetime. Our route starts near, and then climbs, Mount Whitney – the high point of the lower forty-eight states – and continues north some two hundred miles ending in Yosemite National Park. Along the way it climbs over 13,000’ passes, wanders beneath high alpine peaks, and traverses beautiful meadows and forested river valleys. The spectacular scenery is combined with the generally clement weather of California and warm summer temperatures. We have lived in the area for over 35 years and we are excited to share it with you.

You can expect to cover ten to twelve miles a day. The tentative schedule is as follows, but remember that weather, conditions and perhaps issues such as sore feet or a desire for a rest day may well vary this outline. Be flexible and adapt to the inevitable changes that will occur during a trip of this duration.

Organizing logistics for a trip of this duration can be daunting, so leave it to us! We will plan and prepare meals for all 26 days. We will also schedule five food resupplies so that you never have to carry more than seven days worth of food at any one time. You will leave your vehicle in Bishop California during the trip. We will shuttle you to the Cottonwood Pass trailhead to begin the trip, and we will shuttle you back to Bishop, from Yosemite Valley, at the end of the trip. Your guides will have constant communication with our office, which means you will never have to leave the trial to grab extra items you need added to your resupply such as blister care, medicine, new shoes, etc.

Price includes 75 meals (breakfast, lunch, & dinner for the duration of the trip). Our meals are healthy and prepared by your guide before the trip. We use good quality dehydrated ingredients to make a variety of delicious, protein packed meals. We rarely serve pre-packaged dehydrated melas! Also included is five resupplies. We are able to add small, forgotten items to resupplies for you! Also included is guiding, permits, shuttles on both ends of the trip, tents, kitchen gear and other group gear.

Backcountry Communication

Your guide will be trained in wilderness first aid and will carry a satellite phone for emergency communication. Because of the length of this trip there is always the potential for things to go wrong and the unexpected to occur. Family and friends can contact you through our office. If you want to check in with family or friends each night, we recommend bringing a personal satellite communication device such as a Garmin In-reach. The guide’s device will be reserved for emergencies only.

Backcountry Conditions

We do this trip from July to early September to get what we consider to be the best conditions. There might be biting insects and bugs in July but by August they should be gone. In August and September the days, while getting shorter should be warm with day temperatures in the 60 degree region and nights dipping to about 32 degrees rarely and only at the higher elevations. There may be small snow patches on the highest passes, but not normally enough to warrant ice axe and crampon use. This might well change should we have a big snow winter and we will let you know should this be the case. Stream flows will be well below peak flow and most should be easy to cross. There is the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms that may be heavy for a short time. You will be in the high mountains so there is always the chance of snow, but prolonged storms are not likely at this time of year.

We meet in Bishop at SMC Headquarters for a gear check, then shuttle to the Horseshoe Meadows Campground, have dinner and an early bed. We’ve started the process of getting the body adapted to the thin air at 10,000 feet.

To further aid in our acclimatization, Day 1 is a short day; after this we steadily pick up the pace to Crabtree Meadows and from here climb to the 14,505 foot summit of Mount Whitney. After climbing Mt. Whitney we travel north and pick up a resupply coming in over Kearsarge Pass. The passes here are high and steep, as we travel through the wide open alpine valley of Upper Basin and below the jagged Palisade Range. But the effort is more than compensated for by the incredible scenery and after numerous high passes we drop into the deeply incised cleft of Le Conte Canyon where we get a resupply brought in by pack stock.

Next we travel into the heart of the Sierra. From Le Conte Canyon we cross Muir Pass and enter the stunning beautiful high alpine area of Evolution Valley. We drop into the San Joaquin River drainage and, staying well to the west of the main Sierra Crest, pass Lake Thomas Edison before climbing up onto the Silver Divide. We briefly touch an outpost of “civilization” at Reds Meadow where our next resupply arrives along with lunch.

For many people the last segment is the most beautiful section of the trip and now, being trail hardened and carrying lighter packs, we finish the final section quickly and efficiently. After leaving Reds Meadow we camp at Johnston Meadow. We skirt the beautiful Garnet Lake and well named Thousand Island Lake before dropping into Rush Creek and then cross Donahue Pass, our last pass. Lyell Canyon is long but nearly flat and we pause in Tuolumne Meadows to pick up our small resupply and then begin the long descent down to the the wonders of Yosemite Valley,  the end of our trip,  our shuttle pickup and our return the the “civilization” of Bishop.

  • Day One: Meet in Bishop, do a gear check and shuttle to Horseshoe Meadows.
  • Day Eight: Arrive at Bullfrog Lake with a resupply coming in over Kearsarge Pass.
  • Day Thirteen: Arrive in Le Conte Canyon and receive a resupply. Hike north to Big Pete Meadow.
  • Day Seventeen: A short side trip to Muir Ranch to pick up a resupply.
  • Day Twenty One: Arrive at Reds Meadow north of Mammoth. Here we pick up our re-supply and head north to Johnston Meadow.
  • Day Twenty Four: Arrive in Tuolumne Meadows.
  • Day Twenty Six: Arrive in Yosemite Valley.

High Sierra Hut to Hut!

  • Information
  • 4-Day Itinerary
  • Additional Information

The High Sierra Hut to Hut is a brilliant link up of two trans-Sierra hikes by way of one of the most scenic and remote sections of the John Muir Trail.

Hut to Hut in the High Sierra??  Yep, that’s right but only for those willing to go for big days of light and fast. By connecting fully equipped mountain lodges with 20 mile stretches of trail, we can go as light and fast as a day tripper, but see so much more. If you are a trail runner that likes the concept of ultralight backpacking with a fraction of the weight, and without the rigors of wilderness camping then this is your jam!

This trip has a minimum of 2 to run at this price on these dates.

As light and fast as you can go in the High Sierra, and in comfortable style!

Hut to Hut fastpacking means moving rapidly, unencumbered, and with maximum comfort. We use mountain lodging on the western edge of the John Muir Wilderness to allow a guided, point to point, multiday Sierra adventure with nothing but a light running pack and the clothes on your back. If you’d like 20 miles of perfect trails followed by a glass of wine, a home-cooked meal, a shower, or a soak in natural hot springs then join us for this special event offered only once in September, after the Labor Day holiday.

The High Sierra Hut to Hut is a brilliant link up of two trans-Sierra hikes by way of one of the most scenic and remote sections of the John Muir Trail. The route starts and finishes on the Eastside of the range. We stay at the Vermillion Valley Resort at Lake Thomas Edison on the first night, then at the Muir Trail Ranch for two nights. The Vermillion Valley Resort is near the John Muir Trail. They provide a ferry to transport us across the lake to the lodge, which has all of the amenities of a roadside fishing lodge. The Muir Trail Ranch is a unique private landholding amidst the wilderness and is a popular stop and resupply point for John Muir Trail hikers. It features quaint log cabins, gourmet home-cooked cuisine, and natural hot springs in private tubs! We allow an extra day here to rest, ride horses, fish, or to explore places like Evolution Valley or Goddard Canyon. We can arrange to have non-running friends or family meet you here and spend a night or two, just ask us for details! Anyone who really knows the JMT can tell you that THIS is a unique and amazing adventure through wilderness on foot. As light and fast as you can go in the High Sierra, and in comfortable style!

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

23 Great High Sierra Trail Hikes Throughout the Sierra

High Sierra Trails are picturesque, challenging, and often unseen be the millions of visitors to the Sierra each year. The High Sierra Lakes and trails are what dreams are made of if your like hiking in the back-country or discovering some of the most beautiful natural pools of water on the earth.

sierra hiking tours

Sierra Rec Magazine Staff Trail Picks-

  • Young Lakes Loop Yosemite National Park – Hiking out of Tuolumne Meadows to the North up to Young Lakes via the Dog Lake Trail head is a challenging high Sierra hike that provides meadows, creek crossings, vista Cathedral Range views and perfect mountain camping locations for backpackers. High sierra hikers often explore beyond young lakes to Roosevelt lake and onto McCabe lakes to the north.
  • PCT Trail From Echo Lake to Fontanillis Lake (several Loop Options available) – Hike the PCT up past Echo Lake picking up visits to Tamarack, Ralston and Lake of the woods on your way to Lake Aloha for the first night, then proceed over the pass to Susie, Gilmore, Dicks and Fontanillis lakes in Desolation Wilderness. from here options to exit Desolation near the Velma’s or to proceed into Granite Chief wilderness on the PCT / Tahoe Rim trail .
  • Vogelsang to Yosemite Valley – Starting in Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite hike up th e Rafferty Creek trail into the Vogelsang high camp region. (Several lake options here we like Boothe lake for a first night camp) – Hike up and over Vogelsang Pass into the Lewis Creek drainage, hike along Lewis creek until in merges with the Merced river and into Merced Lake. from Merced Lake you can proceed to the valley even picking up Half dome if you get a permit and seeing Nevada and Vernal Falls. Alternative Route, Loop back up to Cathedral lakes at Merced Lake and finish back in Tuolumne meadow.
  • Virginia Lakes to Green Lakes Valley – One of the most overlooked loop trails on the Eastern Sierra. Starting at Virginia Lakes just North on Mono Lake Hike up the Virginia Lake Canyon by a series of beautiful lakes and harsh mountain scenery up to Summit lake on the border of Yosemite National park. (If time allows on your trip adventure into Yosemite National Park Return Creek Canyon) From Summit lake cross over to the Green Creek Canyon for another series of great high Sierra lakes. Each of these canyons are popular day hikes, but should be on any backpackers or backcountry fishing persons bucket list as a through hike.
  • Fourth Of July Lake – A Short Backpacking trip that includes time on the PCT and a series of popular day hike lakes options in the Central Sierra south of Lake Tahoe. Hike from Carson Pass of HWY 88 on the PCT South past Frog Lake and divert on the trial towards Winnemucca Lake and Round top Lakes which are very popular day hike destinations and beginner one night backpack destinations. Follow trail down 1200 feet below Round Top Peak to Fourth of July Lake. a small quaint lake that provides all that we love about the Sierra.
  • Nelson Lake Lake to Mathes and Echo Lakes Loop – A rare hike in the Sierra that needs permit but has no official trail. Hiking to Nelson Lake in the Cathedral range is typically done following the signs of human use trails over the pass behind Elizabeth Lake. Nelson Lake itself is just a fantastic destination hike, but when you add a cross range journey over to Matthes Lake and then around to Echo Lake before exiting over the Cathedral lakes route of the John Muir Trail, you end up with one of the best backpacking loop routes available in Yosemite national park.

Description

Explore the heart of Sequoia National Park along one of the most beautiful and renowned trails in the world…the High Sierra Trail. This trail, built in the 1920’s and 30’s as a relatively moderate path to access the High Sierra, follows the north wall of the vast canyon of the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River into one of the most scenic areas in the Sierra Nevada… the Great Western Divide. There, we will camp at stunning Hamilton Lake surrounded by soaring granite peaks and cliffs, rising over 4000 feet above us and explore this mountain kingdom, appropriately named Valhalla.

Come join us for an extraordinary adventure in Sequoia National Park’s High Sierra! Call 800- 715-HIKE (4453) to learn more.

NEED TO KNOW: PERMIT PROCESS

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks issue backcountry permits 6 months in advance. It’s beneficial to register before permits are issued and if you do, we recommend not making concrete travel arrangements until the permit is secured. We have a very good success rate with Sequoia-Kings Canyon permits, but if unsuccessful your deposit is 100% transferrable or refundable.

After an early rise and a hearty breakfast, we pack up camp and prepare for a long day on one of the most amazing trails in the Sierra. The views along the way are spectacular and ever-changing as we make our way past Castle Rocks, Little Blue Dome and Sugar Bowl Dome before we reach the historic Bearpaw Meadow High Sierra Camp. After a quick break we will continue on into the immense cliffs and peaks of the Great Western Divide, all along enjoying what some consider to be the most scenic area of the Sierra. Tonight, we will camp at stunning Hamilton lake and enjoy another hearty meal with a lake side view.

Elizabeth G

Fantastic hike with a challenging but not excessively difficult itinerary. The scenery was so gorgeous, especially lower Precipice Lake still surrounded by snow and filled with ice. The camp at Hamilton Lake was idyllic. Carm was a fantastic guide, from scouting the trail the week prior, to great conversations and of course delicious meals, she is definitely top-notch.

Outstanding

I went on the High Sierra and Great Western Divide with a great group of hikers who I did not know prior to the hike. Michael, our guide, was outstanding. Amazing meals, hand prepared daily, were a constant surprise. I would highly recommend Wildland Trekking for your next adventure.

Wonderful and Memorable Experience

Dylan McFarlane did an absolutely excellent job on the trip. He made the backpacking trip a wonderful and memorable experience. He did a great job cooking, which is very important because I have celiac disease and cannot eat any gluten. I am grateful to him for making this trip so special.

High Sierra Camp Guided Trips

If you're not accustomed to hiking in the mountains—or simply want the comfort of an experienced guide who will share their knowledge and passion for hiking—guided trips through the High Sierra Camps are a wonderful choice. Scheduled multi-day trips are available with a guide. Custom guided trips through the High Sierra Camp Backpacking Campgrounds can be arranged through the Yosemite Mountaineering School, please call 209.372.8344 . The Yosemite Mountaineering School guided trips do not include lodging at the High Sierra Camps.

NOTE: High Sierra Camp Guided Trips are available for any guest, but reservations must be made.

Guided Hikes

Five and seven-day guided trips take you from one High Sierra Camp to another. Because you'll be staying at the High Sierra Camps each evening where you'll enjoy the comforts of a tent cabin and chef prepared meals, you won't have to carry a heavy backpack with the tent, food or cooking supplies.

NOTE: These Guided Loop Trip Hikes are available only for guests successfully chosen in the High Sierra Camp Lottery.

How to Apply

Yosemite High Sierra Camps have been a popular destination in Yosemite National Park since they were first established. Because of the demand, we’ve created a  lottery  system for reservations. Applications are accepted in October for the following year. We email winners in the winter.

Trek Sierra Nevada

Welcome to Trek Sierra Nevada

Trek Sierra Nevada is a comprehensive guide to hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the south of Spain. It also covers walking in the surrounding area, where the scenery is often as dramatic as in the Sierra Nevada itself. You can use the site to find detailed, accurate route descriptions for some of the best self-guided walks in southern Spain, as well as lots of useful information about where to stay, when to come and how to get around. You can also book guided walks and introductory mountaineering courses through the website.

More activities

sierra hiking tours

If you would like to combine your hiking holiday with some history and culture, rest and relaxation, nightlife or adventure sports, the area around the Sierra Nevada has it all. You can visit the magical Alhambra palace and city of Granada , go canyoning , try a via ferrata , sample the local food and drink , explore the quaint white villages of the Alpujarras or just head for the beach.

Guided or self-guided?

All of our self-guided walks are designed to be done without a guide, which allows you to go at your own pace and enjoy the peace of the spectacular mountain scenery.

On the other hand, if you go with a guide you’ll learn much more about the local architecture, geology, fauna and flora, as well as the people who live here, than you would on your own. And if you want to climb the highest peaks like Mulhacén or Veleta in winter, the only safe way to do it is with a guide.
