How To Write A School Trip Letter To Parents

When it comes to booking a  school trip , there are countless things to consider and plan – it’s an exciting time for all involved. But, after you have gained approval from the necessary channels, there comes a time when you must start promoting your school trip to your students and their parents – after all, planning can only go so far without their buy in.

The most common way to spread word about an upcoming trip is to send a letter to parents. But what should you include, and how much information is too much?

To help, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide of how to write a school trip letter to parents. Take a look below for inspiration, including a downloadable school trip letter template.

What To Include In Your Letter

1. what are the benefits of a school trip.

The main aim of your letter should be to convey how enriching a school trip can be for any student.

School trips are a fantastic way for students to learn – seeing new sights and experiencing unfamiliar cultures can be a great way to stimulate the brain, while creating a memorable case study to aid their learning.

In your letter you could make parents aware of exactly how beneficial and enriching a school trip can be for students. This will help to build a case for parents to see the how a trip will aid their child in the long term.

2. The trip logistics

As with any investment, parents will want to know precisely where their money will be spent before making a decision on whether to send their child on a school trip.

To put parents’ minds at ease, you  can inform them of the logistics of the trip. Make sure to include the trip’s price , dates , what the deposit will be , how many places there are , when a response is needed by , and a general outline of what the trip will include (if possible). Make sure to include which subjects or modules the school trip will be beneficial towards.

A slip  can be also provided along the bottom of the letter which can be filled out by parents to secure their child’s place. This will help to garner how many students would like to attend the trip.

3. Your school trip provider

Finally, when writing your letter, you should make an effort to introduce the school trip  provider  you have chosen. This will allow peace of mind for parents wishing to find out more about their child’s school trip.

When introducing your school trip organiser, it is often beneficial to mention their point of difference. What was it that made you choose them? Put their minds at rest by confirming that the company has all the  accreditations to keep their child and their money safe.  Your school trip organiser should be able to help you with this.

Is there an example I can use?

If you’re looking for help with writing a letter to inform parents about an upcoming school trip, then this example letter should lend a hand.

Respected sir,

With due respect, I am writing this letter to ask for permission to arrange a field trip to some old forts for my History course. For the trip, we will be needed the college buses. I have attached the list of places we need to visit.

Kindly grant us approval so that we can wind this up by the end of this month. We shall be really thankful to you. Thanks

Letter to Father Seeking Permission to go on an Excursion

Dear Father,

I am really sorry for not being able to write to you last week as my pre-board examination preparation tests session was undergoing. I have had a better percentage in this test session, especially in Math, Physics, and Chemistry. As you know I am having these test sessions for about 6 months now, I really feel that now I am gaining more grip over Math, Physics, and chemistry. I will send you my cumulative result report of the last 2 test sessions by the 10 of January. Then my last session “send-ups” will be left to attempt.  Board papers will commence end of March.

I wanted to take your kind permission for an excursion trip to Naran & Kaghan with the Class, and school teachers for a week. Papa, I am really tired and want to have some mental relaxation for a few days before I give my send-ups attempt. I am kind of room sick, and my nerves need to relax. The excursion trip will be leaving on 15 January and will return on 19 January, under the kind guidance, and surveillance of staff teachers, and the Coordinator.

The charges for an excursion trip are Rs 5000 per head. Cambridge and Matric student badges will be going together. Also, this will be our last school memory, an excursion trip. I really don’t want to miss it as well I will have psychological relief from the burden of studies for a while.

I hope you will definitely allow me to go on this excursion trip with my fellows and teachers. I assure you that this excursion trip and relaxation will not affect my result and performance in send-ups.

I need to submit my dues, and parents’ permission letter by 10 January. Kindly, reply to me soon so I don’t miss this chance. Love you, papa, you are my inspiration. Love you loads. I will keep updating you at whatever location we reach. I will send the detailed excursion trip destinations and transportation. Love you!

Yours Shining Star,

Loving daughter Dj

A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing a Comprehensive Letter to Parents About Your School’s Trip Abroad

What to include in your school trip letter.

Want some help? We’ve created this template to save you time and ensure you cover all the necessary information to inform parents about the trip. You only have to customize the template to suit your needs and provide additional information relevant to your trip.

Downloadable template: school trip letter to parents

Where should we send you the letter template?

Objectives and benefits of the trip

In this section, you should explain the reason for the trip, the educational goals, and what the students will gain from participating.

It’s very important to provide a clear and detailed explanation of why the school has chosen to organize this trip. This way, you can help the parents understand why the trip is a valuable opportunity for their child.

Trip logistics

You should provide all the trip logistics details to ensure the parents have all the information they need to enroll their child in your school trip.

Provide a detailed itinerary of the trip that includes the dates, destinations, and activities that the students will be doing. In addition, describe the type of accommodation and the modes of transportation arrangements.

Safety is crucial since your students are minors, so outline the safety and security measures that will be taken to ensure students’ safety, such as emergency procedures and medical precautions. Hold back on your school trip rules email until you’ve confirmed student travelers and send it to them alone.

It’s really important to let the parents know about your tour operator so that they know you’ve chosen one that is reputable and fully accredited. Usually, your provider will help verify this.

Also, don’t forget to provide the contact information of the trip leaders and teachers who can answer parent concerns. It ensures parents that their child’s safety and well-being are prioritized.

Alandis Students in El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico

Payment schedule

Parents and guardians should be provided with clear information on the cost of the school trip and payment schedule, including details on the cancellation policy and any associated charges.

It will ensure parents are fully informed before committing, helping them plan and reduce the number of dropouts moving forward.

Lastly, you need to explain to parents all the steps they need to take if they want to sign up their children on your school trip. In most cases, the inscription comes along with the first deposit and a permission form. We recommend adding the permission slip at the end of the letter to make it as accessible as possible for them.

Also, you should include the details of when the parents’ evening or info session will be arranged. In addition, if the school has any social media accounts, you could share updates and additional information.

In conclusion, a well-written letter to parents about your school trip abroad can help ensure that parents are fully informed about the trip details so they can decide to sign their children up. Using a template and following the guidelines we provided above can save time and promote the trip effectively, turning your planning and preparation into a successful and valuable learning experience for your students.

Disney Educational Trip Letter: What you need to take your kids to Disney during the school year!

Disney Educational Trip Letter: What you need to take your kids to Disney during the school year!

So, you’re planning a Disney trip during the school year. You’re going to need a Disney Educational Trip Letter for the school so they can have an excused absence and not get in trouble!

In a world where learning knows no bounds, the prospect of taking your children to the enchanting realm of Disney during the school year can be more than just a magical escape—it can also serve as a remarkable educational experience. As a parent, you may find yourself wanting to embark on this extraordinary journey, but with a clear conscience and a justified rationale.

Crafting a thoughtful letter to inform your child’s school about the planned excursion can not only ensure their absence is excused but also demonstrate how the wondrous realms of Disney offer a treasure trove of educational opportunities that go far beyond the confines of a classroom. In this letter, you have the chance to unveil how these captivating moments will enrich your child’s understanding of history, culture, imagination, and creativity, creating memories that will linger as invaluable lessons for a lifetime.

Why Would You Want to Go to Disney World During the School Year?

Hands-on learning with fun in disney world.

Embarking on a journey to Disney World during the school year presents a host of unique benefits that extend far beyond the confines of traditional education. This captivating adventure offers an opportunity for children to engage in experiential learning, where the magic of storytelling, history, and culture converge to create an immersive educational experience. There are lands and areas inspired by various time periods and cultures, young minds are exposed to diverse architectural styles, social customs, and artistic expressions, fostering an appreciation for global heritage that textbooks alone cannot replicate.

The intricate attention to detail within Disney’s attractions, combined with the educational narratives woven into each ride, fuels curiosity and critical thinking, encouraging children to question, analyze, and connect concepts in an engaging and memorable manner. Moreover, the park’s emphasis on science and technology, evident in cutting-edge attractions and behind-the-scenes innovations, offers a unique window into the practical applications of STEM subjects, igniting a passion for learning that can endure long after the trip concludes.

By taking advantage of this unparalleled opportunity, parents can provide their children with an educational adventure that broadens their horizons, sparks intellectual curiosity, and cultivates a lifelong love for learning.

Family Time with Fewer Lines

Let’s call a spade a spade, here. When school is in session there are fewer people in the parks, meaning less crowds, less lines, and more opportunities for fun! The allure is definitely there. As a parent who has unapologetically taken my kids to Disney World during the school year, if you can do it, just do it! We had the opportunity to really enjoy each other more than on the trips we went during June/July because of the crowds.

BUT –

If you choose to take your children on a Disney adventure during the school year, do it responsibly. Read on how to find the educational components to point out, tips on dealing with the schools, and of course, a sample Disney letter for an educational trip.

Notify the Schools Before Your Trip

Failing to notify the school about your intention to take your children to Disney World during the school year could lead to potential repercussions under the school’s attendance policy. Without proper communication, your children’s unexcused absence may trigger concerns from school officials, leading to disciplinary actions and a potential accumulation of unexcused absences on their records.

In more serious cases, persistent unexcused absences could raise red flags, prompting a visit from the Department of Social Services, who may need to investigate the circumstances and ensure the well-being of the children. To avoid these unintended consequences, it is crucial to take proactive steps by submitting a well-crafted letter to the school, outlining the educational intent behind the trip and seeking official approval for the absence. By doing so, you can ensure a smooth and worry-free experience, safeguarding both your children’s educational journey and their overall well-being.

Coordinate with the School

Certainly, meticulous preplanning is a cornerstone of a successful educational trip to Disney World during the school year. By proactively coordinating with your children’s teachers well in advance, you can ensure a seamless transition and mitigate any potential academic setbacks. Requesting the necessary coursework, assignments, and reading materials ahead of time enables your children to stay on track with their studies, even while immersed in the enchanting realms of Disney.

This strategic approach not only safeguards against falling behind but also empowers your children to engage in a balanced blend of hands-on learning and academic progress. Armed with a comprehensive study plan, your children can continue to expand their knowledge and skills while embarking on this exceptional educational adventure, reaping the rewards of experiential learning while maintaining their scholastic momentum.

Now this is where you hold up your end of the deal –

Make sure all of the work given is fully COMPLETED before they go back to school. By sending the kids back to school with incomplete work it is ultimately hurting the child and adding stress to their life. But also, it will put a riff in your relationship with the school because it can come off that you don’t respect them.

How to Get the Work Done While on Vacation

Don’t panic. Your head is probably spinning right now thinking how in the world can you get school work taught, understood, and completed? It can be done, and no, I don’t mean you do it.

There is a ton of down time before and after the vacation. Are you flying? Well, you’re in the airport 2 hours early right? Put away the tablets, candy, and games. It’s homework time! Driving? I’m sure you’re going to be in the car longer than 2 hours then. Plenty of time to have a mini school lesson!

Think of it this way – The whole point of a Disney Vacation is family time with the kids, right? Homework and lessons are just another element of family time.

You can do it. We have faith in you.

Educational Attractions in Walt Disney World

Beyond its reputation as the “Most Magical Place on Earth,” Disney World offers a rich tapestry of educational experiences that captivate the minds of visitors of all ages. Within its enchanting gates, a plethora of educational areas, attractions, and themed parks beckon, seamlessly blending entertainment and learning.

Just look at EPCOT – Standing for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, guests are treated to a park where education and entertainment are combined. Here, children can learn about diverse traditions, languages, and histories through interactions with international cast members and engaging exhibits. Future World within EPCOT is another hub of discovery, boasting attractions that delve into the wonders of space, environmental conservation, and technological innovation, fostering an appreciation for science and exploration.

Living with the Land Epcot

Within Epcot’s captivating World Showcase pavilion, a treasure trove of cultural and educational experiences awaits curious young minds. Immerse your children in a global journey as they explore intricately designed pavilions representing countries from around the world. Each pavilion houses its own unique museum-like attractions, offering immersive insights into the heritage, art, and history of these nations. Wander through the magnificent art galleries of the Italy pavilion, where renowned masterpieces and sculptures evoke the essence of Italian artistic brilliance. Uncover the ancient traditions and artifacts of Mexico in the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros, providing a delightful blend of entertainment and cultural education.

These museums and attractions within the World Showcase pavilion and the Hall of Presidents not only captivate the imagination but also serve as windows into the diverse tapestry of human culture and history. By engaging with these enriching experiences, children can broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of the world’s varied heritage, all while basking in the magic that only Disney can provide.

Additionally, the American Adventure pavilion within Epcot features the American Adventure, an educational and patriotic experience that combines storytelling with history. Here, children can witness animatronic representations of past U.S. Presidents, while absorbing tales of leadership, democracy, and pivotal moments in American history. Through these lifelike presentations, young visitors can gain a deeper appreciation for the ideals that shape the nation and the individuals who have played a significant role in its evolution.

Safari truck Kilimanjaro Safari

Meanwhile, Disney’s Animal Kingdom unveils a world of ecological wonderment, combining entertainment with a deep reverence for nature. The Kilimanjaro Safaris allow young adventurers to embark on a simulated African expedition, encountering diverse wildlife in naturalistic habitats while gaining insights into animal behavior and conservation efforts. At the Conservation Station, children can witness veterinary procedures and engage with experts to grasp the intricate balance of preserving wildlife.

Disney Educational Trip Letter: What you need to take your kids to Disney during the school year! 3

The Magic Kingdom, synonymous with enchantment, showcases historical narratives through its classic attractions. From the intricacies of early American life in Liberty Square to the imaginative journeys of exploration and science fiction in Tomorrowland, children can explore a range of themes that spark their curiosity about the past, present, and future. Additionally, the interactive and immersive experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios offer a glimpse into the art of filmmaking, animation, and show production, inspiring young creatives to explore their artistic passions.

Overall, Disney World’s multifaceted educational offerings empower children to delve into a world of culture, science, history, and creativity, weaving valuable lessons into the fabric of their magical adventure.

Remember – Kids learn by DOING.

Sample Disney Letter for Educational Trip

Dear Principal [Principal’s Name],

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you of an upcoming educational trip that my child, [Child’s Name], will be undertaking, which will necessitate their absence from school for a few days. I believe this experience will be an invaluable opportunity for my child’s educational enrichment and personal growth.

From [Start Date] to [End Date], my family and I will be taking a trip to Walt Disney World. Although this may sound like a recreational excursion, we have carefully designed an educational program to ensure that my child continues their learning outside the traditional classroom setting.

During our time at Walt Disney World, we plan to focus on multiple educational points, including the evolution of communication and language as a vital aspect of human history. My child will explore how different forms of communication have evolved over time, from ancient languages to modern technology. We will visit various exhibits and engage in interactive activities that illustrate the significance of language in shaping societies.

Furthermore, we intend to delve into American history, starting from the American Revolution and progressing to the present day. Our trip will include visits to historical sites, monuments, and museums that highlight critical events and figures in the country’s development. This immersive experience will enable my child to grasp the real-life context of the history they have studied in class and cultivate a deeper appreciation for their nation’s heritage.

In addition to history, we have planned activities to foster an understanding of science and space exploration. My child will have the opportunity to participate in simulators and educational sessions that simulate elements of the space program. This hands-on experience will ignite their curiosity about the universe and inspire them to pursue further studies in science.

To embrace the richness of diverse cultures, we will be visiting various museums dedicated to Native Americans and exploring the unique traditions and practices of Mexican, Norwegian, French, Japanese, Chinese, English, Canadian, and Moroccan cultures. This exposure will broaden my child’s horizons, promoting cultural sensitivity and respect for different ways of life.

I understand the importance of consistent attendance at school, and I assure you that we have thoroughly considered the educational value of this trip. The combination of history, science, and cultural exploration will consolidate the lessons my child has learned in the classroom and expand their imagination and thirst for knowledge.

I kindly request your understanding and support for my child’s temporary absence from school during the mentioned dates. We hope we have given ample notice so that we can collect all work prior to the trip, so that my child will not be behind. We promise to have all work completed upon return, and will communicate with you via email about any questions.

Thank you for considering our request. I am confident that this educational journey will have a lasting impact on my child’s education and personal development. If you require any additional information or have any concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.

Disney Educational Trip Letter: What you need to take your kids to Disney during the school year! 4

I am a mother of three that has refused to grow up. Adulting is for the birds, so I go to Disney World every chance I get for that magical escape from reality. I believe that Haunted Mansion is the best ride in all of the Disney Parks, and I am fervently in team Happily Ever After for fireworks spectaculars, (sorry, not sorry, Enchanted). Finally, I hope I never grow tired of skipping down Main Street, USA, and my dream come true would be “friends with” the Fairy Godmother in my old age.

I have seen several threads on here where ppl were asking about or posting about needing to write a letter to the school to be able to take the kids out and the letter was explaining all the educational properties of a Disney vacation. Like what things in what subjects they can learn in each park. I have seen several threads like that but I can't find them. If anybody could link me or point me in the right direction to find those threads I would appreciate it. I don't even remember the thread titles so I don't know what to search for. The guidance councilor at my kid's elementary school said if I draft up some type of letter/proposal like that for the school/teachers then the trip may very well be considered an EXCUSED absence because it is an educational trip. But I need some serious help with this. I saw one letter drafted up that was long and informative and perfect. But at the time I saw it I didn't think to bookmark that thread because I didn't think I would need something like that. I need it now. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Not sure I'd be able to find it, if you couldn't. But I do know my high school took an annual trip to Disney and it was considered "educational". Epcot was the primary focus. And all the girls had an assignment within the countries, getting to know the cast members and learning about their countries of origins. Also in future world, I remember the land being a subject too. Sorry I don't know the link to the original threads, but maybe this is something you could add in your letter.

Honestly, those letters make me cringe and I bet they provide a good laugh for teachers over their morning coffee.

Why do you need to have it be an excused absence? It really shouldn't be anyway. Just take the unexcused and be honest.

They aren't that hard to write... Dear Principal, Please excuse Johnny as we are going on a family trip to Walt Disney World. Johnny will have lots of opportunity to further his education while on the trip. He'll learn about different countries (or is it country's?) customs, practice reading maps, and learn about keeping a budget and keeping track of money. He'll also get lots of experience with various forms of transportation including planes, trains, and boats. He'll also have opportunities to work on his music appreciation, as well as the history of film. If you have any questions or problems, please don't hesitate to contact me. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 867-5309.

I was advised by the school's Guidance Councilor that we should do this to get the absences excused. The main reason being state law says you have to be in school so many days per year. In our state, once you have (10) unexcused absences you can be failed for attendance purposes and referred to youth court and possibly fined for truancy issues. The principal requests it and SHE Guidance Councilor) SAID will most likely consider the trip an educational trip, excuse the absences, and they won't count against the kids. I'm not good at coming up with a proposal like that. I did find an old post that said mousesavers has an example form letter for the educational trip excuse letter but I can't find it yet. I am still looking for it. I remember someone posted one on here that they were going to use and it was awesome. Very long and detailed and really made the trip sound so educational. Now whether or not my kids LEARN anything on this trip matters NONE to me. I didn't plan this trip as furthering the kid's education. But if it is something the school needs from me, I am going to cooperate. I am taking the kids out for (7) school days. We will be there for 10 days. It's not like they are only missing 3 or 4 little days, they will miss a whole week plus two days of the next week. The fact that they would even CONSIDER excusing those absences thrills me. We have never taken any of the kids out of school EVER for vacation before. This will be the first time. I know it is very hotly debated on here as to whether or not you should even take your kid out for a trip, but we are. I don't care what others think is best for my kid. I just need some guidance on this letter thing. And I am hoping that someone who has had to do this will see this and post something to me. Thanks guys! And yeah, the teacher can laugh about my letter all she wants to, even laugh to my face, as long as I get these days excused, I will laugh with her.

Of course you could put your money where your mouth is with the school & have your child come up with ideas of what he could learn on the trip -- and write the letter. Now you say elementary school, so you might have to guide the research & write the letter, but it will show initiative & that you have some intentions on following through. IMO it might even be a fun way for your kid to learn some new skills or hone some he or she already has some experience with. It might add a little something fun to your trip as well.

Dear friend,

How are you? I am doing well and hope you are sailing the same boat. I am writing this letter to you today to tell you about my educational trip from school to Red Fort, Agra.

We saw a lot of things but the most amazing was Agra Fort. We went to see the 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. It is a red sandstone fort that encompasses its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls. It includes many palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques. It was an amazing experience. I will show you the pictures when we meet.

Let me know when you would be available to come to my place. Hope to meet you soon.

Yours lovingly Rani

Question: You went to the Botanical Garden for a school education trip. Write a letter to your friend about your educational tour.

Hints: How was your trip – Where did you go – What did you do there

Naktala Kolkata 700047 August 15, 2021

How are you? Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to you to tell you about my trip to the botanical garden. This was our annual educational trip from school. This year we went to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden. It was founded by Colonel Robert Kyd in 1786 and developed by William Roxburgh. The garden has a gigantic Banyan tree that is famous and it is 250 years old. The Great Banyan Tree covers about 14,500 square meters of land in the botanical garden. We saw a few different kinds of plants and flowers too. I would like to go there with you for a fun holiday trip. We learned a lot of things that will help us in our General Knowledge exam.

Give my regards to your parents. I hope to meet you soon.

Yours lovingly, Ranu

Question: You went to the Zoological Garden in Kolkata for a school education trip. Write a letter to your friend about your educational tour.

Hints: Where did you go – How was your experience – What did you do

Southern  Avenue  Kolkata 700029 November 10, 2021

How are you? Hope you are doing well. I am doing well too. I am excited to tell you about my school trip to the Zoo yesterday.

Every year our school takes us to a new place to enhance our general knowledge and have a little fun too. This year we took a trip to the Zoological Garden. It was opened in 1876 and covers 46.48 acres. The Alipore zoo has around 1,100 wild animals. We saw a wide range of animals including tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, zebras, giraffes, an anaconda, and birds of various species. We enjoyed ourselves a lot there and learned a lot about wild animals. We both should go on a trip to the zoo with our parents. Let me know where did you go this year. I would like to know about your experience too.

Hope to see you soon.

Yours lovingly, Sabiha

Question: You went to the Taj Mahal, Agra for a school education trip. Write a letter to your friend about your educational tour.

Hints: Where did you go – How was your trip – Did you enjoy it

Garia  Kolkata 700084 November 25, 2021

How are you? I am doing well and hope you are doing well too. I am writing to you to let you know about my educational trip to Taj Mahal, Agra.

Last night I came back from the trip and I wanted to share everything with you. When we went there we saw The Taj Mahal, which is also known as Rauza-i-munawwara. It is an ivory-white marble mausoleum. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his favorite wife, Mumtaz. More than 20,000 workers from India, Persia, Europe, and the Ottoman Empire, along with 1,000 elephants, were brought in to build the mausoleum complex. It is mesmerizing.

I had a nice time on my trip. How was your school trip? I will wait for your letter.

Yours lovingly Bunty

Deion Sanders rips players after receiving letter from CU professor

Coach Prime wasn't pleased with the negative report about his team

  • Author: S.M. Corder

In this story:

Deion Sanders was less than enthused when he spoke to his players last week. The Colorado Buffaloes coach received a letter from a professor on campus about how some of the Buffs are mailing it in. The write up stated it was hard for them to do their job and how the players have been a distraction because they don't want to be there.

Needless to say, Prime handled what was written to him accordingly. He went to work and called out the entire team, letting them know how he feels. "It bothers me to the fact that we are not only a football team, but we try to prepare you for life,” Sanders said. “We are trying to get you ready to live in that land, right after this one."

Sanders read back the letter to the entire team. He let them know that if you are not active, it doesn't matter. "You present, but you ain't really there. You are on the field, but you ain't doing nothing. You are in a relationship, but you ain't got no love. You are at the mall, but you ain't got no money. Got a lot of ability, but no darn talent. Because you don't think."

Coach Prime then spoke about how in this new era of college football with NIL and the transfer portal how coaches have to handle the situation differently.

"Ninety percent, or ninety-five percent of your roster, ain't going pro. So coaches, we got to emphasize education, we got to emphasize life, we got to emphasize the next step, the next elevation, if it doesn't work."

Although he was disappointed, Sanders did his best to put a positive spin on this situation. "Today was not wonderful, but I would be derned if I allowed these kids to get out of here without something, without something. Because this life is getting ready to live, you gotta win with your mind, not your athleticism. Student-Athlete, Athlete-Student I don't care how you say it, you gonna get something before you leave here. God bless!"

Sanders and the Buffs are entering week three of spring practices in Boulder. They’re halfway through the session before the Black and Gold Spring game on April 27.

Guests and natives alike can experience educational activities.

Educational travel and voluntourism often serve as a conduit for experiential learning. An educational vacation or community service travel can enrich knowledge of places and customs in ways that can’t be taught via textbooks, especially for younger kids who tend to soak up hands-on lessons like a sponge. Through cultural exploration and immersion, students become enriched as global citizens, while developing a stronger knowledge of language and geography as well as an increased confidence and problem solving skills.

Rustic Pathways oversees immersive and authentic student travel programs.

Rustic Pathways , a program for global teen adventure travel and community service programs, conducts leading immersive and authentic student travel programs for middle school, high school, gap year and college-aged students. The service-based programs span locations from Australia to Japan to Alaska and more. Programs are available in 25 countries, and students accrued a total of 38,060 service hours in 2023, on track to increase for 2024, while 68% of Student Travel programs focus mainly on sustainability. Rustic Pathways has announced their 2024 student programs .

Travelers who are seeking an immersive educational experience for all age groups are well advised to check out these resorts.

Students venture beyond their textbooks and villages.

Turtle Island, Fiji

Three times a year Turtle Island, a private island resort in the Yasawa region of Fiji, opens to families. Children are invited to become stewards of the island and learn how to farm, fish, weave baskets and visit local villages. The property recently announced ‘Turtle Island Field Trips,’ an educational program giving local school students from neighboring islands and villages the rare opportunity to venture beyond their textbooks and villages to learn firsthand about hospitality.

Even the smallest guests are immersed in local culture.

Montage Hotels & Resorts

Through its immersive children’s program, Paintbox, children participate in activities that educate them about the destination they are in and the culture of people who live in the destination. For example:

  • Montage Kapalua Bay , Hawaii. This intimate resort situated along Namalu Bay in West Maui, just ten miles from Lahaina, invites Montage’s youngest guests to learn Hawaiian language, hula and listen to talk stories from Montage Kapalua Bay’s cultural ambassadors. Activities such as explorations from mauka to makai (land to sea), turtle tracking along the Kapalua Coastal Trail or lessons on Maui’s aquatic playground at Namalu and Kapalua Bay foster a connection with the island.
  • Montage Palmetto Bluff , SC. At the luxury Lowcountry resort, resident naturalist, Cassie Beato, leads young and adult guests on waterway ecotours and walking tours of Bird Island, the resort’s treehouses, River Road and more.

One of the activities is The Humming Bird Safari.

The Tryall Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Since The Tryall Club is located on 2,200 acres of pristine coastline with lush forests throughout, there is a big focus on learning about nature. For example, one of the activities is The Humming Bird Safari which includes bird watching, where kids learn about native birds and the opportunity for feeding. There's also opportunity for cultural immersion such as playing traditional Jamaican games such as Cricket and Rounders, Jamaican Folklore Time where the children learn about Jamaican stories and culture, reggae dance time and more.

Arkansas led the nation sending letters home from school about obesity. did it help.

Kavitha Cardoza

letter on educational trip

Since Arkansas started sending the obesity letters to parents, the state's childhood obesity rates rose to nearly 24% from 21%. During the pandemic, the state obesity rate hit a high of more than 26%. M. Spencer Green/AP hide caption

Since Arkansas started sending the obesity letters to parents, the state's childhood obesity rates rose to nearly 24% from 21%. During the pandemic, the state obesity rate hit a high of more than 26%.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Sixth-grade boys were lining up to be measured in the Mann Arts and Science Magnet Middle School library. As they took off their shoes and emptied their pockets, they joked about being the tallest.

"It's an advantage," said one. "You can play basketball," said another. "A taller dude can get more girls!" a third student offered.

Everyone laughed. What they didn't joke about was their weight.

Anndrea Veasley, the school's registered nurse, had them stand one by one. One boy, Christopher, slumped as she measured his height. "Chin up slightly," she said. Then Veasley asked him to stand backward on a scale so he didn't see the numbers. She silently noted his height as just shy of 4 feet, 7 inches, and his weight as 115.6 pounds.

Lifesaving or stigmatizing? Parents wrestle with obesity treatment options for kids

Lifesaving or stigmatizing? Parents wrestle with obesity treatment options for kids

His parents later would be among thousands to receive a letter beginning, "Many children in Arkansas have health problems caused by their weight." The letter includes each student's measurements as well as their calculated body mass index. The BMI number categorizes each child as "underweight," "normal," "overweight," or "obese." Christopher's BMI of 25.1 put him in the obese range.

In 2003, Arkansas became the first state to send home BMI reports about all students as part of a broader anti-obesity initiative. But in the 20 years since, the state's childhood obesity rates have risen to nearly 24% from 21%, reflecting a similar, albeit higher, trajectory than national rates. During the pandemic, the state obesity rate hit a high of more than 26%.

Still, at least 23 states followed Arkansas' lead and required height and weight assessments of students. Some have since scaled back their efforts after parents raised concerns.

One school district in Wyoming used to include a child's BMI score in report cards , a practice it has since stopped. Ohio allows districts to opt in, and last year just two of 611 school districts reported BMI information to the state. And Massachusetts stopped sending letters home . Even Arkansas changed its rules to allow parents to opt out.

Multiple studies have shown that these reports, or "fat letters" as they're sometimes mockingly called, have had no effect on weight loss. And some nutritionists, psychologists, and parents have criticized the letters, saying they can lead to weight stigma and eating disorders.

BMI as a tool has come under scrutiny, too, because it does not consider differences across racial and ethnic groups, sex, gender, and age. In 2023, the American Medical Association called the BMI "imperfect" and suggested it be used alongside other tools such as visceral fat measurements, body composition, and genetic factors.

All that highlights a question: What purpose do BMI school measurements and letters serve? Nearly 20% of American children were classified as obese just before the pandemic — up from only 5% some 50 years ago — and lockdowns made the problem worse. It's unclear what sorts of interventions might reverse the trend.

Joe Thompson, a pediatrician who helped create Arkansas' program and now leads the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement , said BMI letters are meant to be a screening tool, not a diagnostic test, to make parents aware if their child is at risk of developing serious health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems.

Sharing this information with them is critical, he said, given that many don't see it as a problem because obesity is so prevalent. Arkansas is also a rural state, so many families don't have easy access to pediatricians, he said.

Don't Focus On Kids' Weight Gain. Focus On Healthy Habits Instead

Don't Focus On Kids' Weight Gain. Focus On Healthy Habits Instead

Thompson said he's heard from many parents who have acted on the letters. "To this day, they are still our strongest advocates," he said.

The program also led to new efforts to reduce obesity. Some school districts in Arkansas have instituted " movement breaks ," while others have added vegetable gardens , cooking classes , and walking trails . One district sought funding for bicycles . The state does not study whether these efforts are working.

Researchers say the BMI data also serves an important purpose in illuminating population-level trends , even if it isn't helpful to individuals.

Parents are generally supportive of weighing children in school, and the letters have helped increase their awareness of obesity, research shows. At the same time, few parents followed up with a health care provider or made changes to their child's diet or physical activity after getting a BMI letter, several other studies have found.

In what is considered the gold-standard study of BMI letters , published in 2020, researchers in California found that the letters home had no effect on students' weight. Hannah Thompson , a University of California-Berkeley assistant professor who co-authored the study, said most parents didn't even remember getting the letters. "It's such a tiny-touch behavioral intervention," she said.

Arkansas now measures all public school students in even grades annually — except for 12th graders because by that stage, the pediatrician Joe Thompson said, the students are "beyond the opportunities for schools to have an impact." The change also came after many boys in one school wore leg weights under their jeans as a prank, he said.

Kimberly Collins, 50, remembers being confused by the BMI letters sent to her from the Little Rock School District stating that all her children were overweight, and that one daughter was considered obese.

"It offended me as a mama," she said. "It made me feel like I wasn't doing my job."

She didn't think her children looked overweight and the family pediatrician had never brought it up as a concern.

Hannah Thompson, the researcher from California, said that's the biggest problem with BMI letters: Parents don't know what to do with the information. Without support to help change behavior, she said, the letters don't do much.

"You find out your child is asthmatic, and you can get an inhaler, right?" she said. "You find out that your child is overweight and where do you even go from there? What do you do?"

Kevin Gee , a professor at the University of California-Davis, who has studied BMI letters , said the mailings miss cultural nuances. In some communities, for example, people prefer their children to be heavier, associating it with comfort and happiness. Or some eat foods that they know aren't very nutritious but are an important way of expressing love and traditions.

"There's a lot of rich contextual pieces that we know influences rates of obesity," Gee said. "And so how do we balance that information?"

Collins' daughter, now 15, said that as she's grown older she increasingly feels uncomfortable about her weight. People stare at her and sometimes make comments. (Collins' mother asked that her daughter's name not be published because of her age and the sensitive nature of the subject.)

"On my birthday, I went to get my allergy shots and one of the nurses told me, 'You are getting chubbier,'" she said. "That didn't make me feel the best."

How Doctors Can Stop Stigmatizing — And Start Helping — Kids With Obesity

How Doctors Can Stop Stigmatizing — And Start Helping — Kids With Obesity

Collins said it pains her to see her soft-spoken daughter cover herself with her arms as if she's trying to hide. The teenager has also begun sneaking food and avoids the mirror by refusing to turn on the bathroom light, Collins said. The girl signed up for tennis but stopped after other children made fun of her, her mother said.

Looking back, Collins said, while she wishes she had paid more attention to the BMI letters, she also would have liked practical suggestions on what to do. Collins said she had already been following the short list of recommended healthy practices, including feeding her children fruits and vegetables and limiting screen time. She isn't sure what else she could have done.

Now everyone has an opinion on her daughter's weight, Collins said. One person told her to put a lock on the fridge. Another told her to buy vegan snacks. Her mother bought them a scale.

"It's a total uphill climb," Collins said with a sigh.

And starting this fall, we plan to deliver up to $20,000 in interest relief to over 20 million borrowers and full forgiveness for millions more. [applause] I will never stop to deliver student debt relief and hardworking Americans. And it’s only in the interest of America that we do it. And again, it’s for the good of our economy that’s growing stronger and stronger, and it is, by freeing millions of Americans from this crushing debt of student debt. It means they can finally get on with their lives instead of being put — their lives being put on hold.

Reporting from Madison, Wis.

President Biden on Monday announced a large-scale effort to help pay off federal student loans for tens of millions of American borrowers, seeking an election-year boost by returning to a 2020 campaign promise that was blocked by the Supreme Court last year.

Mr. Biden’s new plan would reduce the amount that 25 million borrowers still owe on their undergraduate and graduate loans. It would wipe away the entire amount for more than four million Americans. Altogether, White House officials said, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more.

“While a college degree still is a ticket to the middle class, that ticket is becoming much too expensive,” Mr. Biden said during a speech to a small but enthusiastic audience filled with supporters. “Today, too many Americans, especially young people, are saddled with too much debt.”

Mr. Biden announced the plan in Madison, Wis., the capital of a critical swing state and a college town that symbolizes the president’s promise to make higher-education affordability a cornerstone of his economic agenda.

But it is a promise he has so far failed to achieve, largely because of legal challenges from Republicans and other critics. They accuse Mr. Biden of unlawfully using his executive authority to enact a costly transfer of wealth from taxpayers who have not taken out federal student loans to those who have.

Officials did not say how much the new plan would cost in coming years, but critics have said it could increase inflation and add to the federal debt by billions of dollars.

Mr. Biden said his new effort would help the economy by removing the drag of enormous debt from people who would otherwise not be able to buy a home or pursue a more economically sound future.

“We’re giving people a chance to make it,” Mr. Biden said. “Not a guarantee. Just a chance to make it.”

Mr. Biden’s announcement was a presidential do-over. In the summer of 2022, he put in motion a plan to wipe out $400 billion in student debt for about 43 million borrowers. That was blocked by the Supreme Court , which said he exceeded his authority. In the months since, Mr. Biden has waived small amounts of debt using existing programs. But now he is attempting a larger effort closer to the scale of his first try.

The original plan relied on a law called the HEROES Act, which the administration argued allowed the government to waive student debt during a national emergency like the Covid pandemic. The justices disagreed after Republican attorneys general and others challenged the debt waiver plan.

The new approach is different.

For months, Mr. Biden’s Education Department has been developing regulations using a long process authorized by the Higher Education Act. Instead of an across-the-board waiver of debt, the new approach targets five groups of borrowers: those whose loans have ballooned because of interest; borrowers who have been paying for decades; those who have economic hardship; people who qualify for existing debt relief programs but have not applied; and people whose loans come from schools that have since been denied certification or have lost eligibility for federal student aid programs.

Administration officials said because the new approach is based on a different law, it is more likely to survive the expected challenges. They said lawyers for the White House and the Education Department have studied the Supreme Court ruling and have designed the new program to make sure it does not violate the principles laid out by the justices.

But lawyers for those who oppose the approach are likely to argue that waiving the debt is unfair to those who already paid back their loans or never took out college loans in the first place. That argument helped sway the justices in the last case.

Neal McCluskey, the director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute, called the new plan “dangerous policy” that is unfair to taxpayers and would cause colleges and universities to raise their prices.

“The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the authority to enact law, and the Supreme Court has already struck down a unilateral, mass student debt cancellation scheme by the Biden administration,” he said. “It would stick taxpayers with bills for debts other people chose for their own financial advancement.”

The legal challenges will likely take months to resolve, and that could leave the debt relief plan in limbo as voters go to the polls in November to choose between Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

Members of Mr. Biden’s administration fanned out across the country on Monday to talk about the new plan, betting that it will rally support among voters who were disappointed that the court blocked the first one, which would have eliminated up to $20,000 in debt for tens of millions of borrowers. Vice President Kamala Harris held a round-table discussion with a teacher, a nurse and a social worker in Philadelphia. Miguel A. Cardona, the education secretary, spoke in New York City.

“We need you to stay in these jobs doing this work,” Ms. Harris said in the library of an elementary school. “And you shouldn’t have to make a decision about whether you serve or are able to pay your bills.”

But beyond the threat of legal action, the president faces steep obstacles just because of the calendar. The new plan has not yet been published in the Federal Register, which will kick off a required, monthslong public comment period before it can take effect. Officials said on Sunday only that they hoped some of the provisions would begin going into effect in “early fall” of this year.

Administration officials hope that the president’s supporters will give him credit for trying, even if many of the borrowers do not end up seeing any relief before they go to the ballot box. Andrew O’Neill, the legislative director for Indivisible, a liberal advocacy organization, praised Mr. Biden’s announcement.

“Progressives have led the fight for student debt cancellation, and Joe Biden has responded,” he said in a statement. “More than 30 million folks will now get relief from Biden’s programs. That’s a huge deal.”

White House officials have been scrambling for months to respond to the anger about student loans among the president’s base. In one poll released last month, more than 70 percent of young people said the issue of student loan forgiveness was “important” or “very important” to them as they make their decision in the 2024 election campaign.

Officials said the five groups of people targeted in the new plan will address most of the egregious issues that some borrowers have with their student loans.

People whose loans have grown beyond the amount they originally borrowed because of interest would have up to $20,000 of that interest wiped away, leaving them to repay only the amount they originally borrowed. People making less than $120,000 a year, or couples making less than $240,000, would qualify to have all of their interest forgiven.

Officials said that 23 million people would most likely have all of their interest-related balances waived from that provision.

About two million borrowers who already qualify to have their student loans waived under existing programs have not applied for relief. Under the new rules, the Education Department would be authorized to cancel the debt for those people without their having to apply.

People who took out federal student loans for undergraduate degrees and began repaying them more than 20 years ago would automatically have the debt canceled under the new plan. Graduate students who borrowed money and began repaying 25 years ago would have their debt canceled.

Officials said that about 2.5 million people would qualify under that rule.

People who borrowed money to attend colleges that have since lost their certification or their eligibility to participate in the federal student aid program would have their debt canceled. Officials did not say how many people that would affect. And people who are especially burdened with other expenses — such as high medical debt or child care — could apply to have their student loans forgiven.

Officials did not estimate how many people might qualify for what they called the “hardship” programs.
