True crime dramas are nothing new, but HBO Max's upcoming miniseries Love & Death features a stellar cast, an engrossing trailer, and many other details that make it stand out from the rest. Love & Death is based on the true story of Candy Montgomery, a housewife in 1980s Wylie, Texas who has an affair with Allan Gore, her best friend Betty's husband. Montgomery was accused and tried for murdering Betty, who was found dead in her home, stabbed multiple times with an axe. On trial, Montgomery claimed self-defense and was acquitted by the jury. She is still alive today and living in Georgia (via Collider ) .

Love & Death is not the first adaptation of Montgomery's story. In 2022, Hulu released a miniseries called Candy starring Jessica Biel as Montgomery and Melanie Lynskey as Betty Gore. Two essentially back-to-back miniseries may seem redundant, but true crime is a popular genre, with miniseries Dahmer , The Staircase , and Under the Banner of Heaven being met with critical acclaim and awards nominations. Love & Death also has the talented team of director Lesli Linka Glatter ( Homeland ) and writer David E. Kelley ( Big Little Lies ), along with many other details that point to its future success.

HBO Max released its full-length trailer for Love & Death on March 23, 2023. The trailer covers the same content as the teaser, released a month prior, but offers a more in-depth look into Candy Montgomery's life and personality. Played by Elizabeth Osen with a soft Southern drawl, Candy is portrayed as a deeply dissatisfied housewife who is always wanting more thrills and adventure out of life. Based on the trailer, Love & Death appears to be a showcase of Olsen's acting talent, and awards prognosticator website Gold Derby predicts that the odds of her getting an Emmy nomination are increasing.

Love & Death Release Date

Love & Death will premiere on April 27, 2023, releasing its first three episodes on HBO Max. From there, the rest will release weekly on the streaming service, with the seven-episode miniseries airing its finale on May 25 (via Deadline ). This schedule keeps Love & Death fresh in Emmy voters' minds, as the 2023 nomination window is June 15-26. Though Olsen looks to be the miniseries' best bet for awards glory, should Love & Death become a hit with critics, it could find itself with a nomination for Outstanding Limited Series or Anthology. It's also possible that the supporting cast could find themselves with nominations.

While Olsen is front and center as Candy Montgomery in Love & Death , she is surrounded by several talented actors. American Horror Story veteran Lily Rabe plays Candy's ill-fated best friend, Betty Gore, while the Oscar-nominated Jesse Plemons plays Betty's husband and Candy's lover, Allan Gore. Candy's husband, Pat Montgomery, is played by Patrick Fugit. Krysten Ritter plays Sherry Cleckler, who based on the trailer, appears to be a close friend and confidante of Candy's. Other Love & Death actors include Elizabeth Marvel (who played President Elizabeth Keane in Glatter's Homeland ) as Jackie Ponder, Keir Gilchrist as Ron Adams, Tom Pelphrey as Don Crowder, and Beth Broderick as Bertha Pomeroy.

Love & Death Story Details

Though the death of Betty Gore and Candy Montgomery's subsequent trial are the focal point of Love & Death , the miniseries, it looks like the story will be somewhat of a character study. Based on the trailer, Love & Death will spend significant time with Candy prior to the grisly incident, showing her dissatisfaction with her life and marriage, and how it all leads to her inviting Allan to have an affair with her after he accidentally knocks her over at a volleyball game.

From there, Love & Death will show Candy and Allan's affair, with a promise to each other that their spouses won't get hurt. Betty seems suspicious, and her discovery of her husband's infidelity will likely be the impetus for her fatal confrontation with Candy, though how the show will depict her death remains to be seen. Love & Death will also cover Candy's trial, with the accusation turning her into a societal pariah, not just for the murder charge but for the infidelity scandal. Whether the miniseries will portray Candy as guilty or innocent or leave it ambiguous will likely be revealed in the May 25 finale.

HBO Max released a teaser-trailer for Love & Death on February 16, 2023, followed by a full-length trailer on March 23. Both feature a shot from Allan's point of view as Olsen's Candy looks at him/the camera, asking " Would you be interested in having an affair? " The trailers also cover the same chain of events — Candy's ennui, her proposition to Allan, their affair, Betty's death, and Candy's trial. Though the ending is already known, what's worth tuning in for is to see if Love & Death will portray Candy Montgomery as a murderer, innocent woman, or let the audience come to their own conclusions.

'Love & Death' Trailer: Elizabeth Olsen Is Murder Suspect Candy Montgomery

Olsen stars opposite Jesse Plemons and Lily Rabe in the true crime thriller coming to HBO Max this spring.

HBO Max has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming true crime limited series, Love & Death , its own take on the infamous true-crime story of Wylie, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery and how she came to murder her friend Betty Gore after getting involved in an extramarital affair with her husband. Last year, Hulu gave the story the limited series treatment to great acclaim and now, HBO Max is now looking to achieve the same feat with its own iteration of the story. If the new trailer is anything to go by, then audiences are in for another enthralling telling of a story that continues to grasp the attention of many. In addition to debuting the trailer, HBO Max has announced that the series will debut on its platform this spring on April 27.

According to the official logline from HBO Max, Love & Death "tells the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe." MCU heartthrob Elizabeth Olsen plays Candy Montgomery who remains despised by many for her acts despite being declared innocent of the crime by a court in Texas after she pled self-defense. Love & Death will be examining the events leading up to Betty's killing from Candy's perspective beginning with how she came to find herself in an extramarital affair.

The trailer suggests that much of the show's focus will be on Candy's illicit relationship with Allan, played by Jesse Plemons ( The Power of the Dog ). The trailer opens with an embittered Candy complaining about dissatisfaction with her marriage despite doing all that is required of a wife. Fed up with her loveless marriage, she is seen formally declaring her feelings to Allan and proposing that they begin an affair, Allan is showcased as being initially hesitant but eventually agrees to the offer as subsequent scenes show them enjoying what seems to have been the early blissful times of their affair. Also starring in the show is Patrick Fugit ( Babylon ) as Candy's husband, Pat, and Lily Rabe as Betty. The cast is fleshed out by Krysten Ritter , Tom Pelphrey , Keir Gilchrist, and Elizabeth Marvel .

Love & Death is inspired by the book “Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs” as well as a collection of articles from Texas Monthly (“Love & Death in Silicon Prairie,” Part I & II). David E. Kelley wrote the series and equally serves as one of its executive producers alongside, Nicole Kidman and Per Saari via Blossom Films; Lesli Linka Glatter , Scott Brown and Megan Creydt, Matthew Tinker , Michael Klick, and Helen Verno . Glatter also directs the first four and final episodes.

On July 13 th , 1980, Candy Montgomery struck Betty Gore with an axe roughly 41 times. This is undisputed. Even Montgomery herself admits it. And yet she’s the only person who knows exactly what happened. The story of the death of Betty Gore was a true-crime staple for years for many reasons—foremost among them the uniqueness of an average suburban mom becoming an ax murderer—but it’s also become a streaming mini-series obsession with Hulu’s “Candy” premiering almost exactly a year before David E. Kelley and HBO Max’s take on the subject in this week’s “Love & Death.” The differences between the two projects are interesting, but the ultimate takeaway is largely the same—this is another version of the Montgomery story that works primarily because of its talented cast. The storytelling leaves something to be desired here, and yet star Elizabeth Olsen ’s work becomes increasingly mesmerizing, ably supported by solid turns from the entire ensemble, particularly Jesse Plemons and Tom Pelphrey . After all the podcasts, true crime series, and now both mini-series, I’m still not sure exactly what really happened in that laundry room over four decades ago, but it’s undeniably rich material for Hollywood to keep excavating.

Olsen plays Montgomery, an ordinary citizen of the very ordinary Wylie, Texas. She’s a devout Methodist who seems happy with her church and her husband Pat ( Patrick Fugit ), who’s a nice-but-bland individual. He likes to chuckle slightly at “The Love Boat,” and one gets the impression that such moments are the peak of excitement in his day, but he doesn’t mind it that way. One of the interesting elements of Kelley’s approach is in how the legendary creator captures mundanity that can still be satisfying; lives that are being lived everywhere that may not have a typically Hollywood degree of excitement but don’t seem to mind it. Even the affair that eventually leads to the murder has a fascinatingly practical air about it—two people who decide to start having sex the way they decide to bring muffins to a church social.

Those two people are Candy and Allan Gore (Plemons), the husband of Betty ( Lily Rabe ). After a few flirtations, Candy immediately asks Allan if they could start sleeping together. They have a few meetings about it, break down the pros & cons, and decide to go for it. Allan has had such a repressed sex life, even with a wife and children, that Candy is the first to use her tongue when she kisses him. There’s notable empathy for both people trying to break out of their suburban ruts with inherently human passions. And yet “Love & Death” is not a story of obsession. It seems clear that Kelley and company want to avoid that potential reading of the murder right from the beginning. Olsen’s version of Candy enjoys her time with Allan and regrets when it appears a support group has repaired the Gore marriage, but it’s not set up as simple as a love triangle with a jealous participant. This is far more complicated than that.

Again, we know that Candy butchered Betty with an axe. Candy has always claimed self-defense. Betty found out about the affair and threatened her. Candy had to pull the axe away to save her own life. But did she have to strike Betty 41 times? Kelley gets to the crime in the middle of the seven-episode mini-series, which allows him to dive into what he’s always cared about most as a creator: The courtroom. “Love & Death” shifts its storytelling from churches and houses to the trial of Candy Montgomery, which allows for some excellent work by Tom Pelphrey as her attorney Don Crowder (somebody give him a “Law & Order”). The “Ozark” star is excellent at conveying the legal pitfalls he’s trying to avoid in a contentious trial of an admitted murderer.

However, is the best approach to the story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore to give so much storytelling thrust to the defendant's attorney? (It’s certainly a very Kelley approach.) I also missed the character work of Melanie Lynskey in “Candy” as Rabe’s version of Betty is pretty shallowly sketched. Perhaps because of the casting of the always-excellent Plemons, the balance shifts to Allan more than Betty. While that shift arguably diminishes the actual victim here, it allows the Oscar nominee for “ The Power of the Dog ” to remind viewers how much he can do with a simple line reading or dejected body language. He’s great here.

Everyone is, but “Love & Death” belongs to Elizabeth Olsen. The fourth centerpiece episode is a master class on her part, capturing how Candy could have gone through the day after such a brutal crime. Olsen becomes increasingly riveting as “Love & Death” unfolds, forcing us to question how much we should like, forgive, or understand her. I’m not sure we ever will. But we’ll clearly continue to be fascinated by her.

Love and Rockets Add Additional Date in Los Angeles to Their 2023 Tour Itinerary

As anticipation builds for their sold-out appearance at the upcoming Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, CA, the legendary alternative rock trio Love and Rockets have announced an additional date in the Los Angeles area. The band is set to perform at the stylish Ace Hotel on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, in response to overwhelming public demand.

Formed in 1985 after the split of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, the band comprising Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins have been busy this year with preparations for their forthcoming national tour and the vinyl reissues of their Beggars Arkive album catalog. (Find those here)

In conjunction with their tour and reissues, Love and Rockets will release “My Dark Twin,” a companion piece to their 1996 album “Sweet F.A.” The 22-track double CD/Digital release features eight previously unreleased versions and six unreleased songs from the “Sweet F.A.” sessions. Fans can enjoy Daniel Ash’s exclusive digital mix of the title track, “My Dark Twin (Doppelgänger mix).”

“My Dark Twin” and the expanded edition of “Sweet F.A.” will be available starting June 9, 2023. This follows the vinyl reissues of “Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven” and “Express” in January, with “Earth, Sun, Moon” and “Love and Rockets” (self-titled) following on April 28th.

Love and Rockets will embark on their U.S. tour starting with the sold-out Cruel World Festival in Los Angeles on May 20th. The tour will circle the States, making stops in major cities including Salt Lake City, Seattle, Chicago, New York City, Boston, Atlanta, and Texas.

The band has also confirmed special guests for their shows. Soriah will join Love and Rockets on May 24th in Salt Lake City and May 27th in Portland, OR. Vinsantos will lend support on all other dates, including the first Portland show on May 26th.

High school students upset they can’t go to prom because it sold out

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (Gray News) – Some students at a high school in Virginia are disappointed that they won’t get to attend prom because the event sold out.

Midlothian High School is set to have its prom at the Hippodrome in Richmond on Saturday night, but not all students will be able to attend.

According to a report from WTVR , students said prom tickets sold out quickly, although it was advertised that tickets would be available to purchase for a full week.

Also, students said they were not informed that the event could sell out.

Parents are as frustrated as students, too.

School administrators said they estimate fewer than 10 students were unable to obtain tickets, according to WTVR.

The school also said it told families at the beginning of the year that the prom would have a limited capacity because of a venue change.

Gunna Previews What to Expect On The Bittersweet Tour

Gunna invited Complex to the rehearsals of his upcoming Bittersweet Tour before he drops his new album ‘One of Wun’ on May 10.

It’s a good time to be a Gunna fan. His new song "Whatsapp (Wassam)" is out now , his album One of Wun is dropping May 10 , and he’s about to head out on tour.

Gunna invited Complex to his rehearsals in Los Angeles and previewed what he’s cooking up for The Bittersweet Tour, which kicks off this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. In a word, it’s ambitious. Sitting in the middle of the stage is a huge statue of Gunna’s head from the DS4Ever album cover, tipped on its side in front of a massive video wall. And if you look up, you’ll see a giant bird hovering over an icy landscape.

I won’t give away all of the surprises, but Gunna has taken his stage show to a bigger, more grandiose level than he ever has before. These performances will easily live up to the large scale of venues like Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, where he’ll end the tour with a homecoming show on June 11.

Expect to hear a lot of recent hits, including standouts from the best album of 2023 ( a Gift and a Curse ) , plus songs and features from elsewhere in his catalog. And he’ll be doing it all with support from Flo Milli , who will be joining as an opener on the tour.

What has become known as Concert Week will take place May 8-14, allowing fans of concerts and comedy shows to purchase tickets to shows ranging from 21 Savage to Tim McGraw for the all-in, fees-included price.

The milestone anniversary of the promotion includes a global expansion to Australia, Asia, Europe, the U.K. and the Middle East.

Fans can filter their search on livenation.com/concertweek to see all of the participating events, venues and artists, or set the location to the closest city to see only participating shows nearby.

Akron woman gets life sentence for Canton man's murder in 2023

C ANTON ‒ A 28-year-old woman could spend the rest of her life in prison for killing a man who lived in the city's southwest section.

On Wednesday, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Natalie R. Haupt gave Chabrijuana J. Glenn a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 23 years for fatally shooting Douglas G. Adkins.

The Akron woman was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated murder, one count of murder, related specifications that a gun was used in the crimes, and tampering with evidence. Charges of aggravated burglary, felonious assault, robbery and related gun specifications were dismissed at the prosecutor's request.

Adkins, 67, was found seriously injured at his home near 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue SW on Dec. 1. He died Dec 5.

Assistant Stark County Prosecutor Kristen Mlinar said the Glenn was intoxicated when she shot Adkins, who knew her brother. Mlinar said the crime was the result of an unfortunate set of circumstances without elaborating on Glenn's motive for killing Adkins.

Mlinar and public defender Tiffany Poirier jointly recommended the sentence imposed by the judge as part of a negotiated plea agreement. The maximum potential sentence was life without parole.

Given the chance to speak on her own behalf, Glenn turned to three of the victim's relatives and said she was sorry for their loss.

No comments were made by Adkins' relatives, although two women grasped each other and sobbed during the sentencing hearing.

Remembering Canton's Douglas Adkins

A large group of Glenn's supporters watched the proceedings in the courtroom.

After his death, Adkins was remembered as a man who loved animals, fishing and playing pool and table tennis.

"He was loved by many," Tonya Love about father after he died.

Adkins' son, Tim Rue, described his father, who had worked as a salesman, as outgoing and caring.

"He would give you the shirt off of his own back," Rue wrote in a text message. "His doors were open to anyone that needed a place to stay. He was a very giving person."

Rue, a Youngstown resident, recalled his father as a ladies' man, pool shark and someone who always had a positive outlook — even on bad days. He said he never saw his father without a smile on his face.

"He had (three) little dogs," Rue wrote. "He liked working on cars and he could walk you through working on one as if he was looking at it right there with you."

Kellie Pickler ‘Still Healing’ After Husband’s Tragic Death: All About Her Life 1 Year After His Suicide

Wearing a black and silver dress, with her hair in blond waves, Kellie Pickler took the stage in Nashville on April 22 as part of a star-studded tribute to the music of Patsy Cline. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was incredibly nervous right now,” the American Idol alum told the audience. “It’s the first time I’ve been up on stage in a while.”

Indeed, more than a year had passed since Kellie had performed in public . The former Pickler & Ben co-host, star of three Hallmark movies and SiriusXM radio host completely stepped away from the spotlight following the tragic February 2023 death of her husband, Kyle Jacobs , by suicide. During her return to the mic this April, Kellie paid tribute to the late songwriter by singing “The Woman I Am”—a tune they’d penned together over a decade ago. “The last time I was here in the Ryman Auditorium was with him on a date night,” she said, “and I know he is here with us tonight.”

According to an insider, the appearance was a major step for “still healing” Kellie, 37. “It’s been a really rough 14 months. She was isolating herself amid the grief,” the insider exclusively tells Life & Style . “Kellie may never fully recover, but Kyle wouldn’t want her to hide away. He’d want his wife out there performing, doing what she loves — and the fact that she gets to honor Kyle’s memory in the process is bittersweet.”

Kellie met Kyle at a Nashville bar, and the two eloped in 2011 after three years of dating. Aside from collaborating on music, the pair co-starred on three seasons of the CMT reality series I Love Kellie Pickler .

But then tragedy struck. On February 17, 2023, EMTs found Kyle locked in a bathroom at the couple’s house, dead at age 49 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Devastated, Kellie didn’t speak out about the incident until August, when she shared: “One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of crisis, if you don’t know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still.’ I have chosen to heed his advice.”

Now, it seems she’s finally ready to take things off pause. In addition to hitting the stage again, Kellie has put the abode she once shared with Kyle up for sale. “There have been many nights she cried herself to sleep — a life without Kyle still doesn’t seem real sometimes. Kellie’s working at being at peace with it,” says the insider. “She sees reminders of him everywhere, but she’s definitely a lot stronger today. It’s one of the reasons she listed their home. Kellie needs to move on, which is also why she’s focusing on her career right now.”

Eventually, she’d like to move on romantically as well. “She hasn’t given up on love,” says the insider. “Kellie hopes one day to find a great guy, remarry and have a family. She’ll always cherish her time with Kyle, and is continuing to process his death, but Kellie is hopeful for the future.”

The "Houdini" singer will be both the Host and the Musical Guest on May 4. Her third studio album,  Radical Optimism , drops on May 3.

The English-Albanian singer and  Argylle  actress has previously been Musical Guest on  Saturday Night Live  twice, on February 3, 2018, and December 19, 2020.

Jon Bon Jovi’s Honest Quotes About His Marriage to Dorothea Hurley and Their Struggles

While Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Hurley fell in love at a young age, they have worked through their marital struggles.

The couple grew up in the same hometown and met while attending Sayreville War Memorial High School. During a joint appearance on the Howard Stern Show in 2023, Hurley teased that when they were teens she knew Bon Jovi (real name John Bongiovi Jr.) would be a rockstar one day — and she was proven right.

While they dated in the 80s, the musician formed his band, Bon Jovi. Jon and Hurley briefly split in 1985 as the rock band continued to grow more popular. The twosome rekindled their romance and tied the knot in Vegas while Bon Jovi was on tour.

“We had the No. 1 album, the No. 1 single, and we were playing three nights at the Forum in L.A.,” Jon told Men’s Health in 2010. “I turned to Dorothea and said, ‘I got an idea. Why don’t we go right now?’ She said, ‘You’re out of your mind.’ I said, ‘Come on. What’s better than this, right now, this moment?’ And so we ran off to Las Vegas. Didn’t tell a soul.”

Jon and Hurley have been together since. However, the singer has been candid about his struggles to balance his marriage with the rockstar lifestyle.

“These are all the wonderful clichés of rock stardom,” Jon said in an April 2024 interview with the Independent . “It’s about never lying about having been a saint, but not being a fool enough to f–k up the home life, either.”

Knowing What They Have

Jon shared that Hurley was well aware of what she was signing up for as a rockstar’s wife.

“I’ve been in one of the biggest rock bands in the world for 25 years,” he said in a 2007 interview with Best Life magazine. “It’s not like Dorothea came in halfway through the movie and didn’t know who she got.”

The Grammy winner confessed that his wife was enough for him and the thought of “trading in or trading up” his partner never crossed his mind.

“I don’t have a mistress on the side or another family across town,” he said at the time. “You’re never going to read that story about me. I have no regard for that whole lifestyle.”

Being There for Each Other

While going through a difficult time in his life, he was grateful to have Hurley by his side.

“It felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders,” he recalled to The Mirror in 2016. “Without her, I am not sure how I would have coped. A lot of these things added up and a snowflake became an avalanche. I am proud to say I have been with one band my whole life, one record label my whole life and one wife my whole life.”

“I got away with murder. I’m a rock and roll star, I’m not a saint,” Jon recalled in an April 2024 interview with ABC News . “You know, I’m not saying that there weren’t 100 girls in my life – I’m Jon Bon Jovi. It was pretty good.”

Despite his rockstar status, the singer noted that he would never do any “stupid thing” that would “jeopardize” his relationship with Hurley.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this world revolves because of her,” he continued, noting how his wife cared for their four children: Stephanie, Jesse, Jake and Romeo, while he was on the road. “Because of what she did to keep the kids right, what she does to keep me right, what we do together to keep it right. No doubt about it.”

Jon explained that Hurley isn’t afraid to call him out when he needs it while also supporting him during his low points.

In an April 2024 interview with Fox Digital , Jon teased that he “somehow” became the “poster boy for a long-married rock star.”
