Explore Waimea Canyon and the Wailua River

This Kauai excursion combines a visit to Waimea Canyon, “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and a scenic ride up the Wailua River to the unique Fern Grotto, where the ferns actually grow upside down.

Your shore excursion begins with a scenic drive up to the unforgettable Waimea Canyon. From your lookout at 3,400 feet, you experience an unsurpassed view of the 2,857-foot deep canyon and the surrounding countryside. The canyon’s size combined with the reds and browns of exposed volcanic rock and the blues and greens of lush tropical vegetation truly create a magnificent sight.

After leaving Waimea Canyon, stop at a lava rock cropping known as the Spouting Horn. It’s a natural saltwater geyser that sprays plumes high into the air when the surf is washed into a lava tube and sucked up through a hole in the coastal rock. The geyser may reach up to 50 feet depending on the surf that day and provides photographers with an added challenge in capturing one of Poipu’s most scenic coastal shots.

Then, proceed to the picturesque Wailua River, the only navigable river in Hawaii, where you board your riverboat for a delightful cruise to the Fern Grotto. The grotto forms a natural amphitheater and provides excellent acoustics for the Hawaiian chorus to serenade you with the Hawaiian Wedding Song. It’s quite the romantic ending to your day exploring Kauai! The pathways at the Fern Grotto may be slippery, so please dress accordingly for this Hawaii cruise excursion.

  • chaunettem2023 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome tour and tour guide! Sabrina made this trip amazing! She has so much knowledge, history, and fun stories and really brought it all to life! She also knew weather patterns and things well and even though of course rain can’t be controlled, she knew the usual timing and pattern and we were able to see it all beautifully even on a rainy day as she diverted bad weather and showed us different things to wait it out. The only two complaints are coming from Oahu and flying out that morning for a day trip, we did have to sit at the airport in Kauai for about an hour and a half after landing for the van to come to start the tour at 8am so it was a very long day. But it was entertaining and a great way to see a lot of the island and learn a lot! Only other thing is the lunch place was an odd choice. It was at a nice golf course but the options were super basic like cheeseburgers and fried chicken and it would have been fun to go to a local place with local cuisine. Sabrina knew so much about everything and made it so much fun! Read more Written April 2, 2024

Waimea Canyon & Wailua River Tour in Kauai (Spouting Horn, Old Koloa Town)

  • Explore the rich history and adventure in Waimea, where Captain Cook first set foot on Hawaiian soil in 1778.
  • Visit Old Koloa Town, home to Hawaii's first sugar cane plantation, and learn fascinating tales about the plantation era.
  • Cruise up the serene Wailua River to the sacred Fern Grotto with its enchanting acoustics.
  • Capture spectacular photos against the backdrop of cloud-covered Mt. Waialeale and the romantic Opaekaa Falls.

?

Waimea Canyon & Wailua River

Fondly known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," the Waimea Canyon offers spectacular views that rival its mainland cousin, but also has an island personality all its own. Your Kauai Waimea Canyon tour includes a stop to see the Spouting Horn. The actual canyon is bursting with ever-changing color, with an array of yellow ginger and eucalyptus trees. Kauai's own mokihana berries grow right up to the highest (3,500 feet) elevation. This Kauai tour takes you up to the canyon overlook and provides a visual history along the way.

Located on the western end of Kauai, Waimea offers a rich history and plenty of adventure. The town's claim to fame is the landing spot where Captain Cook first set foot on Hawaiian soil in 1778. Though believed to be the god Lono, he proved to be a mortal and was slain. On the return leg of your Kauai tour, you'll pass through Old Koloa Town. Established in 1834 and situated in the heart of Hawaii's first sugar cane plantation, quaint old buildings have been carefully renovated and restored and are now home to unique shops and restaurants. As you drive by, your guide will share fascinating stories about life in the plantation era.

After your morning journey to the Canyon, you'll return to the cruise pier, where you'll have time to grab lunch on board your ship.

After the break, you'll begin your tour of the Wailua River; a long, slowly meandering river that starts at the Wai'ale'ale Crater and is fed by many tributaries on its way to the ocean. It is the only navigable river in Hawaii.

For a unique Hawaiian adventure, join this cruise up the river on a long, flat-bottom riverboat to the sacred Fern Grotto, a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. Hawaiian musicians will greet you at the grotto with traditional local songs, including the famous "Hawaiian Wedding Song." The superior acoustics within this natural amphitheater greatly enhance the music.

The cruise takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, and provides many opportunities to photograph the tropical grasslands lining the river and the majestic cloud-covered Mt. Waialeale in the background. You may also see kayaks, motorboats, and water skiers along the way.

After the river cruise, you'll be taken to the overlook at Opaekaa Falls, another romantic stop that will surely secure your love of this garden island.

Shore Excursion: Waimea Canyon, Wailua River & Fern Grotto Tour

This Kauai excursion combines a visit to Waimea Canyon, “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and a scenic ride up the Wailua River to the unique Fern Grotto where the ferns actually grow upside down.

Your day begins with a drive to Waimea Canyon. From your lookout at 3,400 feet you’ll experience an unsurpassed view of the 2,857 foot deep canyon and the surrounding countryside. The canyon’s size combined with the red and browns of exposed volcanic rock and the blues and greens of lush tropical vegetation truly creates a magnificent sight.

After leaving Waimea Canyon, stop at a lava rock cropping known as the “Spouting Horn”. A natural salt water geyser that sprays plumes high into the air, which occurs when the surf is washed into a lava tube and sucked up through a hole in the coastal rock. The geyser may reach up as much as 50 feet depending on the surf that day, and provides photographers with an added challenge in capturing one of Poipu’s most scenic coastal shots.

Then, proceed to the picturesque Wailua River where you’ll board your river boat for a delightful cruise to the Fern Grotto.

What to Expect

Kauai has many natural wonders and unique adventures to offer - experience must-see highlights on this immersive tour experience. Cool breezes lull you as the captain shares stories of ancient Hawaii when the river was flanked by multiple Hawaiian heiau (temples). Overall rating

My family and I had never been to Kauai and I wanted to book this tour as it had some fun things to do. Rosario was a great tour driver, very funny and knowledgeable and safe driver. We went to Opaekaa Falls, then went o ... n a river cruise on the wailua river to the fern grotto (while on the boat we learned how to hula and enjoyed listening to the smith family singing and dancing hula). Then we went to Waimea canyon aka the Grand Canyon of the pacific- pictures do not do it justice. Very breathtaking. Then we went to kauai coffee plantation where we sampled amazing coffee and finally went to see the spouting horn. Overall a great tour with Rosario

As someone who had never been to Kauai before, I booked this tour as a way for my boyfriend and I to get acclimated to the island. We were so lucky to have Kana e, a wonderful native tour guide, as our driver and tour gu ... ide. She made the entire day so much fun, and extremely interesting. We both loved her stories of the island, of her family, and her enthusiasm. I greatly recommend this tour, especially if you can have a native guide as good as Kana e!!

Waimea and Wailua

We enjoyed the Waimea Canyon Tour. The coach driver was friendly, funny, and informative. The Wailua River Cruise was disappointing and boring. The driver of the boat had no enthusiasm in his voice and the visuals ... of the river were unimpressive. Since you can no longer enter the Fern Grotto cave, this stop is no longer amazing as it used to be.

Description

Journey to the heart of Kauai's interior where you'll ascend a mountain via a meandering road to reveal what Mark Twain aptly described as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Eons of wind and rain have eroded this once-volcanic landscape into immense cliffs and deep gorges of the Waimea Canyon. On the way to the canyon you will watch the ocean waves propel jets of water through lava rock at the Spouting Horn Blowhole. In quaint Hanapepe town amid sugar cane fields, view Hanapepe Valley from the lookout and cross the famous Hanapepe Swinging Bridge. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Waimea Plantation Cottages provided by Chicken in a Barrel BBQ (a local favorite eatery) with stunning ocean front views fronting a two‐mile black sand beach.

Venture down a nature trail in Koke'e State Park for an easy hike surrounded by native Hawaiian flora and fauna. The first portion of the hike is a gradual uphill stroll for about 30 yards, then the land levels; hugging the contours of the hill. Listen for the lyrical chirping of the rare red 'apapane or i'iwi bird species who sip nectar from the blossoms on the native trees.

Peer at the expanse of Waimea Valley from Puu Hinahina lookout point and visit the recently unveiled King Kaumuali'i Statue at Pa'ula'ula, more commonly known as the Russian Fort.

The final event of the tour is a stop at the Kauai Coffee Plantation near the coast for a stroll through the coffee orchard that leads toward the ocean. See the entire coffee process from initial blossoming and harvesting to the final roasting. Sample the exclusive line of estate‐grown Hawaiian coffees while relaxing beneath the warm late afternoon Hawaiian sun.

Waimea Canyon is a must-see site on the island of Kauai ... it is a bit out of the way though, as it is located on the far west side of the island miles from any resort hotels. It's a bit of a white knuckle drive on a winding mountain road ... consider sitting back and enjoying the scenery while your experienced driver / guide takes you there. The drive up to the Waimea Canyon overlook skirts the rim of the canyon and these tour vehicles sit much higher off the ground than a passenger car. You'll actually see more while riding on this tour than you will out the window of a rental car. One thing you will be struck by on this tour ... the number of wild chickens running around everywhere you go on the island of Kauai. Please consider taking one back home with you as a souvenir at the conclusion of your vacation! Ha ha.

For those who enjoy biking, you might also consider the Waimea Canyon to the coast downhill bike tour .

Although Waimea Canyon is nothing compared to the Grand Canyon in size, you have to admit – it’s still breathtaking. The Waimea Canyon trail offers gigantic and unbelievable views on such a tiny island. Self-guided driving tours with stops and lookouts make for a relaxing sightseeing day. Even paid tours for Waimea Canyon are well worth it because it’s impossible to discover all of it in just a single lifetime.

Waimea Canyon activities are generally free, which is great news for the majority of us (including me). However, if you find yourself with a lingering sense to learn more about the Waimea Canyon, go for the paid tour!

Aloha with love, Amy

Waimea Canyon trail

A Little Intro To Kauai’s Big Canyon

If you’re on Kauai, two things have got to be on your Kauai must do list: the Na Pali coast and the Waimea Canyon. While the Na Pali coast’s untamed cliffs will get your heart pumping, the Waimea Canyon with her ancient layers of time will give you chicken skin. In fact, Kauai has lava flow dating back to 5 million years ago, making Kauai the oldest island of Hawaii’s main islands.

Cool Fact: Waimea Canyon’s nickname is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific!

The Waimea Canyon Trail

The Waimea Canyon trail (aka “Canyon trail”) is one of the most popular hikes to explore the Waimea Canyon. The trail takes you toward Waipoo falls, but you’ll pass several smaller waterfalls on the way if it’s been raining recently. While you won’t be able to reach the base of Waipoo falls, you’ll still get to see it at a closer distance. Plus, the views you’ll get on the Waimea Canyon trail are so much different than the view at the top so it’s certainly worth it.

Be prepared for the Waimea Canyon trail to go up and down, have plenty of tree roots, and some rather steep inclines. Be careful of rainy days where these ups and downs will have an effect on your traction and may cause you to slip and lose your footing. The best time to hike any Waimea Canyon trail is after a few sunny days to allow the rain to evaporate and dry out from the ground.

Another reason why the Waimea Canyon trail is a great choice is that kids love it! The challenges this hike provides really gets the blood pumping and it’s a completely different experience than Kauai’s numerous rainforest hikes. Plus, the added benefit of a waterfall, swimming pool (the smaller waterfalls are accessible) and potential mud seems to always be an incentive for kids.

Recommended Waimea Canyon Trail – Cliff Trail

Another way you can access the Waimea Canyon trail is via the Cliff trail. Park your car on the side of the road between mile markers 14 and 15 and walk down the dirt path until you get to a fork in the road. The way to the Cliff viewpoint is quick and easy and gorgeous. From there, you can easily backtrack to the fork and begin the Waimea Canyon trail.

Waimea Canyon Drives And Lookouts

Like the Waimea Canyon trail, driving along the canyon is free and fun. If you choose to view Waimea Canyon by car, there are  several lookouts along Kokee Road (Highway 550) that you can stop at but here are the more popular and well-maintained ones. What’s probably the most popular lookout is the Waimea Canyon Lookout, which is just past the 10 mile marker. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.

  • Waimea Canyon Lookout, just past the 10 mile marker. Probably the most popular lookout. There’s a large parking lot and viewing area so you really can’t miss it. Because of its popularity, you’ll probably get a lot of other people in your photos, which is not always bad since they’ll provide a comparison to the vastness of Waimea Canyon.
  • Puu Hinahina lookout at the 13 mile marker. The view you’ll get here is considerably different as you’ll be seeing the canyon from a curve. While the lookout itself is smaller than the Waimea Canyon Lookout, I still highly recommend Puu Hinahina lookout as the canyon will run perpendicular to you. There is also a small platform where you’ll be able to see Niihau island on a clear day.
  • At the 18 mile marker, you’ll come across Kalalau Lookout where you can view the famous Kalalau Valley that opens out to the Pacific Ocean and the Na Pali Coast. But, the best view that you’ll get of Kalalau Valley is at Puu O Kila Lookout about a mile later, and this one is a winner! Not only can you view the valley at a higher elevation, but there is also a ridge that you can walk around on to get different views and there is also Pihea Trail that you can hike from here as well.

Waimea Canyon Tours

  • The great thing about Kauai is that you get a huge bang for your buck on a helicopter tour . Na Pali and Waimea Canyon are both very famous and should certainly be experienced as much as possible. The helicopter ride will allow you to not only see an aerial view, but also discover beautiful gems such as hidden waterfalls and hard-to-see landmarks.
  • A bike tour downhill from Poipu is a wonderful way to explore the Waimea Canyon. You can enjoy the scenery outside throughout the length of the canyon. Plus, your guide will tell you all about the history and fun facts of the Waimea Canyon and the island itself.
  • There are also a bunch of Waimea Canyon  package tours  that you can try out. If you’re interested in waterfall swims, luaus, river cruises, jeep runs or in-depth hiking tours, this may be something for you to check out.

I grew up in Hawaii and love trying out new things to do in Hawaii. When I'm not writing about Hawaii travel, I document my Mom's recipes, hike with Daisy the waddling rescue, work on my 200-gallon aquaponics system, and dream about my future van conversion so I can do some more traveling.

The waterfalls on this trail are truly spectacular, and although smaller in size than the Grand Canyon as you said it looks much greener (which I love). Thanks for sharing this valuable information, I hope to be able to visit Hawaii one day 🙂

Aloha Lenise! Ah, that’s true, now that I think about it. I was lucky enough to visit the Grand Canyon a couple of years back and the Waimea Canyon is certainly greener! Nice observation.
