I’ve lived in the Mile High City for over 12 years. Over the years, I’ve given tons of advice on visiting Denver. As a long-time local I’ve welcomed guests from around the world and have plenty of Denver travel tips.

Denver is an amazing city for a weekend getaway or as a home base for exploring the best of Colorado. These locally-designed tips for visiting Denver, Colorado are designed to help you make the most out of your trip. So here’s an inside look at what to know before you travel to Denver.

Arriving in Denver, Colorado

First, the Denver International Airport isn’t exactly close to downtown. In fact, as your plane touches down at DIA you might think you’ve accidentally landed in Kansas.

The Denver airport is around 40 minutes by car and an hour by public transportation from downtown. This is important to keep in mind as you plan your trip.

The cheapest way to get to and from the Denver International Airport is via the train. For $15 you can take the A Line all the way to Union Station, at the heart of downtown Denver. An Uber or Lyft ride from the airport will run you about $80 one-way. YIKES!

If you have a long layover in Denver, you’ll need at least 7 hours in order to have enough time to hop into the city and actually spend some time there. Otherwise, wander just outside the airport to the Westin for a few nicer dining options. In the winter, there’s a free ice rink for use.

Public Transportation in Denver

Unlike super-dense cities like New York City, Denver lacks a suitable public transportation system. In fact, it’s typically faster to walk, ride share or bike around the city. There is a City Bike program where you can easily rent bikes for a small fee and hop from bike stop to bike stop around the city in order to save some cash.

However, if you’re looking to get out of the city and go on an awesome day trip near Denver, there are a few sweet public transportation options for you.

• Bustang travels to Boulder in around an hour depending on traffic
• The G Line on the RTD train goes to Golden
• You can hop a ride with the Colorado Mountain Express to get anywhere in the mountains via private transport.
• The Front Range Ski Bus runs Wednesdays through Sundays during ski season to Loveland Ski Area and back.

Should I Rent a Car in Denver?

Determining if you need a car while visiting Denver really depends on what you plan to do. If you’re just in the city for a weekend and you don’t plan on exploring the mountains, you’ll be fine utilizing Uber/Lyft, public transport, rentable scooters, and bikes.

However, things get a bit more complicated if you desire to go into the mountains. There are a few outdoor recreation areas you can visit without a vehicle (mostly in Boulder). But if you want to explore the best scenic drives around Denver, or you plan on doing day trips from Denver, you’ll be better off renting a vehicle.

In the summertime, you can get away with a two-wheeled drive vehicle. However, in the winter you are required by law to carry chains if you plan on driving up I-70 in a two-wheeled vehicle. The fine is fairly hefty (minimum of $500) so either rent an all-wheel-drive vehicle or ask to be provided with tire chains.

What’s the Weather Like in Denver?

There’s a saying in Denver if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Denver boasts some wild weather, so always be prepared for an unexpected storm or a 40-degree temperature drop. These are almost annual occurrences here in the Mile High City.

One of my favorite Denver travel tips is understanding the weather. Denver is located on a high desert, one mile above sea level. This means that the weather is generally dry and sunny. Wind isn’t uncommon, especially in the spring and fall. Temperatures are generally mild year-round.

Winters tend to be mild with plenty of sun and the occasional snowfall. Temperatures range from 60 degrees all the way to negative 10. Spring is rather unpredictable and snowy, but the flowers are in full bloom.

Summers are hot with temperatures regularly in the 80s and 90s. The monsoon, or afternoon thunderstorm cycles, happen in July. Fall is beautiful with temperatures in the 80s to the 60s. Peak color changing in Denver is during October, however, this is also when the snow starts to fall.

How Long Should I Visit Denver, Colorado?

Denver is the perfect spot for a quick weekend getaway. In just three days, you can see a majority of the city and even make a quick getaway into the mountains.

For longer trips to Colorado, Denver makes a great home base. You’ll still only need to spend just a few days in Denver before heading out to other parts of the state.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Denver?

Honestly, you can visit Denver year-round. The city is bustling with activity and each distinct season has something different to offer. Summer is typically the busy season for Denver, but spring, winter, and fall are all excellent times to visit Denver, Colorado.

Denver is outdoor-focused, even in winter, so don’t expect the cold to keep people inside. You can still explore the outdoors near Denver any time of year.

What to Budget in Denver, Colorado

Denver isn’t exactly a cheap city, but it’s certainly less expensive than New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. Here’s what to budget per day in Denver:

• Basic hotel room: $120 per night
• Hostel Dorm: $20 – $30 per night *expect American hostel quality, not the best choice for solo female travelers
• Transportation: $20 – $30 per day if you are taking a mix of rideshare, public transport and bikes or scooters
• Airport transfer: $15 one way for the train
• Beer at a bar: $6 to $12 depending on how boutique the establishment is
• Cheap Eats: $12 per person
• Dinner for two: $45 – $100
• Coffee: $3 -$5

Budget-Friendly Tips for Visiting Denver, Colorado

If you’re visiting Denver on a budget, here are a few quick Denver travel tips:

• Stay in a private room AirBnB to save money on lodging
• Get a City Pass if you plan on exploring the sites in the city
• Denver has some great Happy Hours, take advantage to save money on drinks.
• Going to a sporting event? Check out deal nights for the local teams before you snag tickets.
• Cook your meals at home. Eating out is expensive.
• Plan on skiing near Denver? Snag your lift tickets online in advance for a little discount.

Acclimatize to the altitude.

Many people don’t think about the fact that they are 5,280 feet above the sea level when they visit Denver. You may feel winded, tired, thirsty, and even develop a headache. It’s important to properly acclimatize when you visit Denver.

For your first day or so, take it slow and drink plenty of water (don’t forget to pack a reusable water bottle). Avoid caffeine, marijuana, and alcohol for the first 24 hours.

Follow Recreational Marijuana Laws

So weed is certainly legal here in Denver. Rember you’ll need a valid ID that proves you’re over 21 and cash to purchase pot in Denver. As a visitor, you’re welcome to smoke or ingest marijuana products, but keep the following in mind:

• It is still ILLEGAL to ingest weed and drive.
• It is also ILLEGAL to ingest or smoke weed in public – this includes nature. The fine for getting caught is up to 15 days in jail.
• Not all hotels are weed-friendly. Ask first.
• Keep it concealed. Weed needs to stay in its container when not in use
• You can buy up to one ounce of weed as a visitor. That is an epic ton of weed. The stuff is strong here, you won’t need much.
• Don’t try to smuggle it out of state. There are regularly drug dogs at the airport.
• Enjoy responsibly. Edibles tend to give people trouble. Take a small dose, wait two hours before dosing again.

Get Out of Denver and See the Mountains

Denver is deceivingly far from those scenic Rocky Mountain vistas. Fortunately, there’s plenty of incredible hiking trails less than 2 hours from Denver . So strap on your hiking boots and bask in the mountain glory!

Chow Down on Local Eats

Denver is a foodie paradise. Thanks to its pro-small business policies there’s tons of innovation here. And that comes with plenty of delicious food. The best eateries in Denver are often locally owned and some have even become local coveted chains. Here are a few Denver-specific foods to try:

• Rocky Mountain Oysters or bull testicles. A total classic you can get at the Buckhorn Exchange, Denver’s oldest restaurant.
• The breakfast burrito. As a coveted Denver tradition, many locals argue about the best place to mow down on some breakfast goodness. My favorite spot is Devil’s Food.
• A classic burger. Build your own with all the weird ingredients at The Cherry Cricket.

Support Local Businesses

Local businesses reign supreme here in Denver. One local Denver travel tip is to check out the variety of local, boutique shops. Take a stroll down Tennyson in the Highlands, Cherry Creek North or Old South Pearl in Platt Park for the best boutique shopping in Denver.

Enjoy the Street Art Scene

One of my favorite parts about living in Denver is the incredible street art scene. No trip to Denver is complete without a walk through the RiNo district where you can catch the latest and greatest street art in the city. Oh, and it’s total Instagram candy so bring a camera.

Grab a Local Brew

When I first moved to Denver, there were only a handful of breweries, but today there’s virtually a brewery on every block. It’s hard to throw a rock and not hit one of the best breweries in Denver. The Great Divide and Wynkoop are classic establishments, while the Crooked Stave and Cerveceria Colorado offer up a fresh new spin on what a brewery can be.

Safety in Denver

Staying safe throughout your trip is extremely important. In general, Denver is a fairly safe city. However, with that being said you should always be cautious and have your wits about you, especially if you’re walking alone downtown at night.

The 16th Street Mall, once a popular tourist attraction, has become a hotbed for petty crime. I wouldn’t recommend traveling around here at night. Take care in the areas north of the RiNo Neighborhood as well as Park Avenue near the homeless shelters.

Meanwhile, the hands-on Space Odyssey area introduces travelers to the outer reaches of the galaxy and beyond. 

Recent visitors said the Denver Museum of Nature & Science was a great place for families. A few reviewers who were not traveling with children said the museum may not be as engaging for adults as it is for kids because of the elementary nature of the displays. Many recent travelers were particularly impressed with the gems and minerals exhibit, which features artifacts like an 8-pound nugget of crystallized gold discovered in Breckenridge in 1887.

Denver's Union Station serves a dual purpose: it's a working public transit station and a highly-praised dining and shopping center. The station was a huge success when it first opened to the public in 1881, providing railroad service until the center of the building caught fire in 1894. The architecture from the 1914 redevelopment remains, and today, it's home to an Amtrak hub and a bus concourse. Located in the hip Lower Downtown neighborhood (aka LoDo), the station also houses multiple dining options and boutiques, as well as  The Crawford Hotel .

If you’re a fan of immersive art installations, you’ll probably enjoy Meow Wolf Denver, which is best described as a contemporary art museum, a haunted house, an amusement park and a film set all rolled into one 90,000-square-foot space. There are several Meow Wolf locations around the U.S., including Las Vegas and Santa Fe, New Mexico . Denver’s iteration is spread across four stories and features more than 70 distinctive installations that feature colorful lights, sounds and interactive displays. The largest permanent installation is the Convergence Station, a “multiverse transit station.”

Denver Zoo Denver Zoo

Modeled after a Kenyan nature preserve, the Denver Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals, including tigers, black rhinos, kangaroos and orangutans. Sprawling across 80 acres of City Park, this impressive facility boasts a number of ways to view our furry, feathered and reptilian friends. Head to Predator Ridge, the recreated African savanna, to see hyenas, lions and African dogs roam, watch monkeys swing from tree branches at Primate Panorama or catch a glimpse of colorful critters like Panamanian golden frogs and green tree pythons at the Tropical Discovery center. You can also overload on cute during a visit to the nursery and take on a ride on the zoo's train and carousel.

While you're here, many travelers highly recommend timing your visit around feeding times, during which staff offers educational lectures about the zoo's residents. Keep in mind that this is a large facility; you'll want to budget plenty of time to see all the animals.

Walk along this mile-long pedestrian mall for restaurants, shops, entertainment and more. Described as "the spine that connects all of downtown," the mall starts with Union Station on the north end and the Colorado State Capitol on the south end, with attractions like the Denver Performing Arts Complex, Larimer Square and the Denver Pavilions – a shopping and dining complex with multiple movie theaters and pop-up events – along the way. If you've worked up an appetite walking around, you won't go hungry: There are more than 40 outdoor cafes throughout the mall, as well as plenty of casual, upscale and international eateries.

Named for Denver's famed beer, Coors Field in Denver's LoDo district is home to Major League Baseball's Colorado Rockies. The stadium occupies a whopping 76 acres and has the capacity for more than 50,000 fans. Of course, the main reason to come to Coors Field is to catch a game, but there's more to this stadium than a diamond. Whether you're traveling with children or alone, be sure to spend some time at the Interactive Area, where you can test your skills in the video batting cages and the Speed Pitch area. And if you've left the kids at home, take the opportunity to sample some of Denver's local brews on the Rooftop, a 38,000-square-foot platform with fantastic views of the field and downtown Denver. If the weather isn't cooperating, pay a visit to the on-site SandLot brewery instead.

Located south of central Denver, Washington Park is consistently praised by Denverites and visitors alike for its ample facilities and enjoyable atmosphere. Occupying 155 acres, this immense park boasts miles of jogging paths, two massive lakes and two formal gardens, one of which is a replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon gardens. Wash Park, as it’s called by locals, is a popular weekend hangout spot thanks to the variety of things to do here. You can spend your time simply relaxing on the grass, or you can take advantage of the park's 10 tennis courts, boat rentals and recreation center, which houses a pool and offers scheduled fitness classes and swim lessons.

Larimer Square Larimer Square free

In 1858, a group of settlers struck gold at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Their discovery soon spread back to the East Coast, prompting people to pick up and move west. The site of the original pioneer camp (known back then as Auraria) soon grew into the charming area now known as Larimer Square. Although the city has since expanded, this historic neighborhood remains the heart and soul of the Mile High City, and according to some, it's the place to start your Denver experience thanks to its variety of restaurants, bars and shops. Football fans won't want to pass up the chance to spend some time on the Denver Broncos' home turf. Empower Field at Mile High can hold more than 76,000 NFL fans and is notable for its elevation, which sits at 5,280 feet above sea level. That, combined with the view of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Denver skyline to the east, makes it a unique venue to visit.

If you can swing it, try to catch a home game. Ticket prices vary by game and availability, and you'll want to purchase your seats well in advance to ensure availability. If you can't make it to a game, you can tag along on a guided tour of the stadium. Led by employees from the on-site Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum (one of the stops on the tour), these 75- to 90-minute tours take participants to the visiting teams' locker rooms, the end zone as well as into the network television production compound and the TV and radio broadcast facilities. Nestled among the contemporary architecture of the Capitol Hill district is the Molly Brown House Museum, an eccentric example of Victorian life and design that no history buff should miss. Once the home of the "unsinkable" Margaret "Molly" Brown (Kathy Bates' character in the film, "Titanic,"), this museum offers a glimpse into Denver's history and the life of one of its most fascinating residents. On a guided tour of the house, you'll learn about Brown's experience aboard the Titanic, as well as her role in the women's suffrage movement and her endeavors in Colorado's mining industry.

Open first as actual gardens as well as a zoological park in 1890, the long-running Elitch Gardens now boasts a theme park, a water park, entertainment and more. At the theme park, fly 17 stories above Denver on the Star Flyer swing ride, or dive and spin at 50 mph speeds on the Mind Eraser coaster. If thrills aren't your thing, you'll find plenty of more relaxing rides and activities in both the theme and water park, such as the Commotion Ocean wave pool and Castaway Creek lazy river.

United States Mint United States Mint free

Even if you hate the sound of excess change rattling around your pockets, you'll find a tour of the Denver branch of the United States Mint to be an interesting way to spend an hour or so. Having opened in 1863, its purpose was to transform the Gold Rush's findings into coinage. Today, the U.S. Mint in Denver can produce up to 50 million coins a day.

A free guided tour of the U.S. Mint in Denver will allow you the opportunity to learn more about each stage of coin production, from the design and sculpting of each piece to the cutting of each type of coin. Some recent visitors marveled at the coin-making machines, but say that not all travelers will likely find it enthralling.

Housed in a hangar on the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, this museum has more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space that explores the history of the base's role in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Cold War. A variety of iconic aircraft, space vehicles, artifacts and military uniforms are on display. The collection includes bombers from World War II, reconnaissance aircraft and commercial planes. One of the most iconic symbols of the Vietnam War – the Bell UH-1M Iroquois “Huey” – is among the displays. 

Past visitors enjoyed seeing the variety of aircraft and especially the replicas of “Star Wars” spacecraft. About 20 miles south of the museum is its sister location, the Exploration of Flight, which offers visitors a more immersive experience. They include a pilot simulator and actual flights in vintage and modern aircraft. The 15-acre site is located at Centennial Field, about 20 miles south of downtown Denver.

Spend 3 Days in Denver with This Perfect Denver Itinerary

Deciding what to pack into your weekend in Denver? I’ve mapped out a perfect 3-day itinerary to the Mile High City for you to bring along. You’re welcome.

I’ll be honest, the first time I visited Denver I didn’t know what to expect. It was never at the very top of my bucket list. 

Things quickly changed when I clocked the vibrant food scene, uh-mazing artwork and the truly impressive amount of museums. 

Then I discovered the city parks, countless craft beer bars and brunch spots, and the popular festivals and events that make Denver one of the most vibrant cities in the USA and it was game over. 

So how do you fit in the head-spinning amount of activities and adventures on a 3-day Denver itinerary? Read on to learn how you can get the most out of your short stay in one of my favourite US cities.

3 Days in Denver Itinerary 

Denver itinerary day 1: explore the city.

On your first day in Denver, you’ll hit the ground running. 

First, check out incredible street art in RiNo, enjoy a boozy afternoon walk around the lively neighbourhoods near downtown, and later end the day with delicious food and far-out sights at Meow Wolf.

RiNo was once home to the famous Crush Walls festival, and now hosts the International Mural Festival in 2023. Artists gather from around the world to paint murals on the walls in the trendy River North Art District (RiNo). I’ve written a complete guide to the Denver murals but, if you’re planning a Denver weekend trip, start your day by walking around the RiNo neighbourhood packed with brilliant wall art that stays up year-round after the famous art fest.

You can even choose to head out on an E-Tuk tour if you have time, or hop around via Uber or public transportation. Check out murals and sculptures like the Blue Bear at the Colorado Convention Center, National Velvet at Highland Bridge or the murals at the Art District on Santa Fe.

Top Tip: You can enjoy this tour later in the day and go brewery hopping between checking out the art in RiNo. Dream day.

Grab Brunch at Denver Central Market

Honestly, you can make a case for heading to Denver Central Market at just about any time of day. There are vendors selling food morning, afternoon and night.

But enjoying a leisurely start to your day with brunch from one of the many popular food vendors is just a vibe you won’t want to pass up on. Menus at many top spots feature Colorado’s best ingredients featured in globally inspired dishes – Green Seed’s salads are a huge hit with me. 

My advice? Arrive hungry and eat your way around the market. Oh, and If you choose to head there later in the day, make sure you check out Curio Bar for cocktails, wine and beer.

Go Brewery Hopping on Larimer Street

There are few places in the USA, or frankly the world, more famous for craft beer than Denver. After all, it’s home to the Great American Beer Festival and has over 150 breweries nearby. But if you happen to be near Larimer Square (definitely check out the shopping and dining on this busy street), it’s a great launching point for a craft beer crawl. Tough Sell? I didn’t think so. If you’re coming from Denver Central Market, you can walk your way down Larimer St. towards Larimer Square and hit up Odell Brewing Five Points Brewhouse, Ratio Beerworks and Larimer Beer Hall along the way.

Top Tip: For the most serious beer enthusiasts, plan your Denver itinerary around the Great American Beer Festival in September.

Check Out Dairy Block in LoDo

A short walk from Larimer Square, head over to Dairy Block in LoDo to see one of the trendiest sections of one of the coolest Denver neighbourhoods. Sure, you can do plenty of shopping, do more day drinking (you’re on vacation) or have a snack at one of the many food outlets. But you’re also likely to stumble on some exciting local events, with the area being a hub for concerts, art fairs and other community events.

Top Tip: Check the calendar ahead of time to plan which day has a can’t-miss event.

Have Dinner at Restaurant Olivia

After shopping at Dairy Block, you can grab an Uber and be at the trendy Restaurant Olivia in about 10-15 minutes.

The upscale restaurant boasts excellent small plates and exciting tasting menus with standouts like spaghetti with poached prawns and gremolata or pappardelle with braised lamb, English peas, feta and pickled rhubarb.

Top Tip: If you’re planning your 3 days in Denver for June, you may need to make other plans as the restaurant is closed from 6/11-6/19 for a staff trip (how cool).

Check Out Meow Wolf Denver | Convergence Station

If any of your friends have been to Santa Fe you’ve probably seen the trippy photos of mind-bending lights and art installations in the fully immersive art gallery Meow Wolf.

Well, the Denver location might actually one-up the original, as it’s the biggest and “first multiversal transit station serving Earth.” There’s a first time for everything, right?

If you like thinking outside the box or just want fun photos for the ‘Gram, Meow Wolf is a must-see.

Top Tip: They’re open until 10 pm, so this is a great activity before heading to bed or having a nightcap at the famous Brown Palace Hotel & Spa on your Denver weekend itinerary.

Denver Itinerary Day 2: Explore the Parks and Museums

Today is all about exploring the (oh so many) museums and parks around downtown Denver.

I hope you brought your best walking shoes; you’ll put in some steps today.

Visit the Molly Brown House Museum

After having coffee and an early morning snack, start your day learning about the icon Molly Brown at her namesake museum. Take a self-guided tour and learn all about the incredible story of the woman who survived the tragic sinking of the Titanic and went on to become a leader in the fight for women’s rights. I can’t think of a more inspirational way to start a day.

Psst… Denver State Capitol is nearby, so swing by if you fancy snapping one of the most important buildings in the city.

Get Inspired at the Denver Art Museum

Wander over to the Denver Art Museum next and check out the vast collection of artworks that make up one of the most impressive galleries in the USA. You’ve already checked out Denver’s so, for now, you’ll get to see some of the more classic artwork.

Galleries and events feature stunning displays of artwork from multiple cultures and continents. The Native American collection is particularly popular and has been celebrating Indigenous North American art for nearly 100 years. 

Top Tip: If you think you’ll visit a few other favourites like The Downtown Aquarium Denver or The History Colorado Center, you may want to book a City Pass through Get Your Guide to save on fees.

Have Lunch Near Washington Park

Head over to South Pearl Street, where you can enjoy some window shopping, excellent food, and perhaps a street festival if you get lucky. Bird is a popular spot to grab some pastries or coffee on the southern end of the park if you want something light.

Or, if you want to start up north and have a more substantial meal, try Blackbird Public House.

If you have time before your afternoon activities, head to Washington Park and plan to spend a couple of hours people-watching or participating in the action yourself. The massive 200-acre park is the perfect place to begin your day with a jog, bike ride, or casual walk through pathways past gardens, ponds, and fountains.

Stop by the Denver Zoo…

Located in Washington Park, Denver Zoo is well worth stopping by on your long weekend in Denver. The sprawling 84 acres of land are home to over 3,000 animals and a team of experts offering exceptional educational experiences and events.

… Or Visit Denver Botanic Garden

If you would rather pass on the zoo (I get it) head to the vibrant ​​LGBTQ+-friendly neighbourhood of Cheesman Park.

While you’re there, visit the Denver Botanic Garden ( get tickets here ) and see the large collections of iris flowers, lavender. Check out the Summer Concert Series and Evenings al Fresco calendars for upcoming events .

Have Dinner in Union Station

Union Station is a gorgeous building in the city centre that’s a must-see on any Denver, Colorado, itinerary.

You can try food or cocktails from numerous restaurants within the station, but Mercantile Dining & Provision is my top choice. The team, led by James Beard winner Alex Seidel, dishes up steaks, seafood and creative small plates in a laid-back setting.

If you’re staying at the Crawford Hotel (you should – more on that later), you can walk upstairs and head to bed early. Tomorrow is going to be an action-packed day

Top Tip: If you plan your weekend in Denver for May – October, you may want to visit Union Station on a Saturday morning to catch one of the best farmer’s markets in the city.

Denver Itinerary Day 3: Head Out to Rocky Mountain National Park

It’s your last day in the city, so I suggest seeing some sights outside of Denver. You can take a short day trip to check out Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater or go a bit further to the famous Colorado Rockies. I chose the latter, so I’ll walk you through what day 3 looks like when you visit Rocky Mountain National Park.

Visit Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park deserves an itinerary of its own. Epic hikes and plenty of chances to take in the fresh mountain air await you. But if you only have enough time to plan a day trip to the national park, it’s still well worth doing when you visit Denver. You can book a guided tour for half the day or hire a car. If you do the latter, wake up before the sun does, and head out on your own adventure. When you drive from Denver to The Rockies, take Trail Ridge Road up the 48-mile scenic stretch of paved roadway from Grand Lake to Estes Park. You’ll be high up in the Rocky Mountains, amongst the wildlife and pristine nature that define the park.

Be sure to check out Rainbow Curve Overlook, Milner Pass and the Continental Divide, and attempt as many hiking trails as you can before heading back to Denver for the evening. 

Enjoy Dinner at El Five

You’ve probably worked up an appetite by now exploring the mountains, rivers and lakes at Rocky Mountain National Park. Do yourself a favour and visit one of the best restaurants in Denver. El Five is a fun Mediterranean-style restaurant high above the bustling LoHi district. Arrive hungry so you can try numerous small plates like Smoked Burrata, Rabbit Confit Crujientes and Matzo Ball Soup Dumplings. Drool.

Pamper Yourself at Denver Beer Spa

I think I’ve saved the very best until last – is there anything more uniquely Denver than a craft beer bar that doubles as a day (or in this case, evening) spa? I think not. Book a massage, spend some time in the sauna and take a plunge into a beer bath. Seriously.

Top Tip: Some of the special offers are perfect for a romantic night out. Try the Date Night Package, where you get a private therapy room with candles, chocolates and $30 to put toward a pint of IPA, cider or kombucha at the taproom. Nothing quite says romance like the smell of beer.

You might be tempted to throw a cap and a pair of trainers in your bag and call it a day, but there’s plenty more you might need in Denver.

You’ll want heavy-duty winter clothing if you plan on hitting the best ski resorts in Colorado or your swimsuit if you visit Estes Park and the many beautiful lakes in the summer.

Getting Around 

Denver International Airport (DIA) is one of the busiest airports in the USA , so getting a direct flight there is relatively easy.  Travelling from the Denver Airport to downtown Denver is equally straightforward using the local RTD train (A Line). The Regional Transportation District (RTD) offers convenient trains and buses throughout the city, making it easy to get around on your Denver 3-day itinerary. You’ll need exact change to pay on the bus and pay ahead of time for the light rail train . 

Top Tip: You will want to rent a car (or book a tour) if you plan to visit the Rocky Mountains or Red Rocks (trust me, both are worth doing).

Perfect One Day in Denver Itinerary for First-Timers

Looking to make the most out of your day trip to Denver?

In this guide, I’ll give you everything you need for a fun and active Denver day trip. Denver is one of my favorite cities! We come at least once every year to visit family and I love its urban cultural energy coupled with outdoorsy mountain charm.

The mile-high city is a very active community. I feel like you can’t go anywhere without seeing a park filled with people on bikes, running, or walking the trails. When I visit, I like to do a combination of experiencing the food and drink scene, arts, and culture with a few hikes in between. The best time was when I came for New Year’s and caught all the Christmas lights and fireworks.

If you only have one day in Denver, you have some options, from hanging out downtown to to spending the day hiking the natural beauty of the Rocky’s, or a combination! Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Sample One Day in Denver Itinerary

Denver has such a fantastic downtown area that I would be remiss if I didn’t include it in a one day itinerary, but if you prefer to spend your days hiking the trails there’s something for you too!

If you’d rather get a guided whirlwind tour to the best of Denver, see the city, red rocks, and more on this half day trip to all the city’s highlights 

• Start your day at Union Station with  brunch at Snooze eatery in LoDo  (Lower Downtown). 
• Wander through the  historic Union Station.  On Saturday mornings during the summer, you can walk through the  Union Station Farmer’s Market. 
• Take a  detour to the 5280 Loop  and enjoy a scenic walk along the path.
• Or grab a coffee and walk behind Union Station to  Commons Park and Confluence Park. 
• Alternative:  Grab a quick breakfast and head to  Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre  for a morning hike. I recommend Red Rocks Trail at sunrise. 
• Take a break and head to  Larimer Square or 16th Street Mall  and grab lunch.
• Venture to the  Colorado State Capitol  and stand exactly 5,280 feet above sea level.
• Directly across from the Colorado State Capitol, relax at  Civic Center Park. 
• Alternative:  Take a break after your morning hike to visit the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Visitor Center, and the Trading Post. Take a shorter  afternoon hike on the Trading Post Trail. 
• Experience the  RiNo District  (River North Art District) for dinner and drinks.
• End your day with a night out in Downtown Denver, enjoying live music, nightlife, or a comedy show.

Quick Facts to Visiting Denver

Ready to hit up Denver? Known as the Mile-High City, Denver is the capital of Colorado and sits exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. This city is not only famous for its Rocky Mountain backdrop, but it’s also the first state to legalize recreational marijuana and the birthplace of the cheeseburger . Yes, you read that right, so don’t miss out on trying one while you’re in town!

What to Do in Denver in One Day

You could  spend several days in Denver , but if you only have one day, kick it off with breakfast or brunch at Snooze eatery in LoDo’s (Lower Downtown) Union Station. If you’re looking for something quick, there are Belgian waffles at Wafels and Dinges or Pigtrain Coffee Co. 

After breakfast, take some time to explore the station’s shops and appreciate the architecture. The station isn’t huge, but there’s something special about spending the morning at a historic train station. 

And if you can’t decide how to fit all the delicious food in a single day, sign up for a food tour spot to eat your way through the city’s ever-changing foodie scene.

Union Station Farmer’s Market

I am such a sucker for a local farmer’s market. If you find yourself spending the day in Denver on a Saturday morning during the summer, pay a visit to the Union Station Farmer’s Market. 

The farmer’s market is from 9 am – 1 pm, and features live music, coffee, local produce, fresh bread, and many more vendors. Denver takes so much pride in its local community, and you can feel it at the farmers’ market. 

Parking tip!  Free daily parking is not available, but if you show your receipt from dining or shopping in the Denver Union Station, you get a discounted validated rate. 

Dairy Block

Just a few blocks away from Union Station is the Dairy Block in the LoDo district . This micro outdoor dining and pedestrian area features an alley adorned with white fairy lights and street art.

Explore an array of shops, art galleries, cocktail bars, and restaurants. One of the highlights of Dairy Block is the Milk Market, a bustling food court that features a variety of local vendors offering delectable cuisine from around the world.

If you have the time, detour to the 5280 Loop as you exit Union Station. The loop is a 5.280-mile pedestrian-friendly urban trail. It’s a scenic walk that connects the Denver neighborhoods. 

As you walk the loop, expect to see landmarks like Coors Field and the Colorado State Capitol building. 

Commons Park and Confluence Park

You can also exit behind Union Station and walk 15 minutes to Confluence Park and Commons Park. When visiting Denver, we enjoy all of the scenic walks downtown. It’s such an active city that there are always plenty of people walking through the parks, pushing strollers, or riding their bikes. 

There are walking trails alongside the South Platte River. At Confluence Park, you’ll find people on kayaks, fishing, and maybe even tubing! A little further down at Commons Park, you can take a break and relax at the promenade along Little Raven Street. 

Alternative: Hike Red Rocks Trail at Sunrise

As an alternative to spending the morning in downtown, get up early and take a short drive out to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre for a morning hike! You will not regret starting your hike just before sunrise to see the sun paint the red rocks in gold and crimson.

Red Rocks Trail

• Length/Duration : 6 miles and about 3 hours round trip.
• Difficulty : Moderate
• Trailhead:  Lower North lot. Head to the northeast corner of the lot, cross the street (east), and the trail starts just on the other side of the road.

The Red Rocks Trail is a loop that spans both Red Rocks Park and Matthews/Winter Park. I wouldn’t consider it a beginner hike, but it’s not too bad. Just make sure you bring proper hiking boots and plenty of water. 

The trail intersects with the Village Walk Trail for about .3 miles, and then Red Rocks Trail picks up again. Take the Morrison Trail and catch a little more elevation for a more challenging hike on the way back. Either way, this morning hike will reward you with panoramic views of the red rock formations!

Afternoon: Larimer Square

If you decide to continue your exploration of Downtown, then head to Larimer Square or 16 Street Mall Promenade for lunch and some shopping. Larimer Square is the oldest block (started in the 1800s) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Place s.

It’s a great spot to grab lunch and a perfect place to experience street art and historic architecture. As you stroll down the charming street, you’ll be surrounded by fully restored red brick buildings adorned with twinkling fairy lights.

16th Street Mall

A short walk from Larimer Square is the 16th Street Mall, a mile-long pedestrian promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. You’ll find more street art, outdoor cafes, and a free shuttle to transport you up and down the promenade. 

One of the highlights of the mall is the sculptures that dot the area and the extensive collection at Tattered Cover Bookstore. Once I went in the winter season and the Mile High Christmas tree adds an amazing festive touch to the holiday spirit.

Colorado State Capitol

If you only have one day in Denver, I think visiting the State Capitol building is a must-do activity! Built in the late 19th century, the Colorado State Capitol is modeled after the United States Capitol in Washington, DC If you want to, join a guided tour up to the outdoor observation area and stand at precisely 5,280 feet above sea level. The view is amazing! 

It’s 99 steps up to the dome, and they do not allow self-guided tours in the observation area. It’s stairs only, but if you can’t make the climb, there is a video presentation. Free guided tours are available Monday – Friday. 

Civic Center Park

Directly across from the Colorado State Capitol building is Civic Center Park. Honestly, this is where I’d have a relaxing picnic lunch or afternoon snack. It’s a beautiful park filled with greenery, floral beds and the largest display of public art in the city. 

Alternative: Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Wherever you decide to spend the morning, you should at least try to go to the Red Rocks Amphitheater in the afternoon. Learn about the park’s geological history at the Visitor Center and grab some souvenirs at the Trading Post. 

If you’re feeling like an afternoon hike, the Trading Post Trail is about 1.4 miles and considered easy. You can then climb up the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for some more great views!

Trading Post Trail

• Length/Duration:  1.4 miles in a loop and takes about 1 hour
• Difficulty:  Easy

I love to hang out and enjoy some beer, wine, and a charcuterie board from one of the local funky restaurants. Denver has such an eclectic culinary scene, so it’s a great opportunity to taste many different cuisines.

After dinner, end the day sipping cocktails with the Downtown nightlife. Larimer Square has trendy cocktail bars and entertainment. 

Howl at the Moon is a high-energy piano bar where musicians perform live music, and you can dance all night long. If you’re looking for a trendy nightclub scene, you should head to Milk Bar. For a more chill and quiet evening, the Ginn Mill is a casual bar focusing on craft beers, signature cocktails, and a laid-back atmosphere.

If you’re more interested in the live music scene, check out the Fillmore Auditorium for excellent acoustics or the Bluebird Theater for a mix of indie rock or alternative music. Catch a Comedy Show at the Comedy Works Downtown location for an evening full of laughs.

Where to Stay

LoDo (Lower Downtown) is centrally located and probably the best neighborhood for a short stay. It’s the heart of the city and near the must-do attractions in Denver. Staying here provides easy access to iconic spots like Union Station and Larimer Square and plenty of bars, cafes, and entertainment.

The nearby Cherry Creek and Capitol Hill neighborhoods are also great options. Cherry Creek is upscale, with tree-lined streets and a quiet atmosphere, while Capitol Hill has historic architecture and is close to downtown.

Is 1 Day Enough for Denver

Spending a day in Denver gives you a taste of its lively city life and culture, but doesn’t give you the full local picture. For those with limited time, focusing on a neighborhood like LoDo, close to key attractions and nightlife, is a good idea. If you are planning a weekend stay, you can explore Denver’s top-notch museums and galleries.

For outdoor enthusiasts, trips to Rocky Mountain National Park or the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheatre are great options. You might even see a live concert at Red Rocks.

Best Time To Visit

Denver experiences four distinct seasons, but the absolute best time to visit Denver is in the fall (September-November). During this season, the leaves change colors, creating a magical setting in parks and the nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. The weather is comfortably cool, and the summer crowds have thinned, making it easier to secure reservations and accommodations. Fall is a great time for beer enthusiasts, with the Great American Beer Festival drawing visitors from all over. 

Spring brings blossoming flowers, but snow is still possible in March and early April. Outdoor festivals kick off in May for the Summer (June-August) peak tourist season. The Red Rocks Amphitheatre hosts numerous concerts, and parks come alive with picnics and cultural events. However, summer is busy, and hotel prices tend to be higher.

Winter in Denver can be challenging for those who prefer warmer temperatures. Cold weather and snowfall limit outdoor activities, but the state is home to killer ski resorts.

How to Get There

Denver is a major hub for transportation in the Mountain West. Whether you’re coming from near or far, there are multiple ways to reach the Mile High City.

For those flying in, Denver International Airport (DEN) is your gateway. It’s among the world’s largest airports. The airport is approximately 25 miles from downtown. Visitors can take advantage of the airport light rail service, known as the A Line, which connects DEN to Union Station in the heart of downtown in about 37 minutes. Otherwise, taxis, ride-share services, and car rentals are also readily available.

If you’re driving, Denver is well-connected via several major highways. Interstate 25 runs north to south, connecting to cities like Cheyenne, Wyoming, to the north and Albuquerque, New Mexico , to the south. Interstate 70 is a key east-west route, leading to Kansas City in the east and eventually to Utah in the west, passing through the scenic Rocky Mountains. 

Amtrak’s California Zephyr line stops in Denver on a route that winds through the Rockies if you’re coming from the west or through the plains from Chicago if you’re traveling from the east. Union Station, where Amtrak arrives, is a historic transit hub filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.

For budget travelers, buses are an affordable option. Public transportation bus services like Greyhound and regional transport services to the city’s bus station that is centrally located.

Final Thoughts: Day Trip to Denver

Denver is an eclectic blend of urban sophistication and rugged outdoor adventures, all within reach on a day trip. It’s a hub for nature and culture and an ideal base for skiing on epic slopes or riding through the Rocky Mountains.

The Denver Broncos brought in four wide receivers for workouts on Tuesday, including former second-round draft pick Denzel Mims .

The Broncos hosted Kaden Davis , Leon Johnson , Lance McCutcheon and Mims, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson .

Davis (6-1, 190 pounds) entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Northwest Missouri State with Denver in 2022. After spending time on the Broncos’ practice squad that fall, Davis spent the following spring playing in the USFL with the Michigan Panthers. He spent last year on the practice squad of the Arizona Cardinals and this summer with the Detroit Lions.

Johnson (6-5, 207 pounds) signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State this spring. He was waived when L.A. set its 53-man roster in August.

McCutcheon (6-3, 202 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Montana State with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. He has since spent time with the Houston Texans and New York Jets.

Mims (6-3, 207 pounds) was picked by the Jets in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Baylor. He hauled in 42 receptions for 676 yards in three seasons with the Jets before being traded to the Lions in 2023. After being waived/injured by Detroit, Mims spent time on the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers last fall. He went to training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars this summer but did not make their 53-man roster.

The Broncos seem to be looking for reinforcements at receiver after their WRs struggled to create separation in the team’s season opener on Sunday. Another name that might be worth watching in the coming weeks is former New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas , who has now completed his one-game suspension . Thomas (6-3, 212 pounds) played for the Saints from 2016-2023, spending six years playing for coach Sean Payton.

Denver’s 53-man roster is full, so if the team adds any receivers, the team will have to make room on the active roster.

Denver Tourism Continues Strong Growth in 2023

DENVER (July 15, 2024) – Today VISIT DENVER , the City of Denver’s official tourism sales and marketing agency, announced that in 2023 Denver welcomed a record 37.4 million domestic visitors, a 3% increase over the previous record set in 2022. This record number of visitors also spent more money in Denver than ever before, generating $10.3 billion in tourism revenue, outpacing last year’s record amount of $9.4 billion by almost 10%.

“Tourism is vital to the Denver economy and we are pleased to see our momentum continue in 2023, especially after the dramatic growth we saw in 2022,” said Richard W. Scharf, President and CEO of VISIT DENVER. "Denver’s tourism businesses, most of which are small and locally owned, rely on these visitors to fuel their success, which allows them to continue to hire employees – almost 74,000 across the metro area in 2023 – and to generate millions in state and local taxes.” (Employment figures source: Dean Runyan Associates 2023 Economic Impact of Travel Study)

Overnight visitors totaled 20.5 million, a 3% rise from 2022, generating $8.8 billion in spending, a 10% increase over the prior year. Overnight leisure visitors led growth, rising by 5% over the prior year to a new high of 17.5 million.

Longwoods International provided the Denver visitor data through their annual visitor profile study, which they have conducted for Denver since 1994. Top tourism destinations from around the country and world rely on Longwoods’ research and peer-reviewed methodology to provide standardized visitor tracking tools.

“The 2023 study shows that travel trends both in terms of visitor numbers and spending are returning to levels more in line with 2019,” said Amir Eylon, President and CEO of Longwoods International. “When looked at in relation to other destinations, Denver enjoyed comparably higher growth suggesting that it benefits from its unique position offering visitors both sought-after urban experiences and easy access to outdoor activities.”

The study confirmed that Denver is a year-round destination with overnight visitation spread evenly throughout the year, with a modest surge in the warmer months. Denver saw 23% of visitors in Q1, 25% in Q2, 28% in Q3 and 24% in Q4.

The data further showed how crucial Denver International Airport and its air service is for continued strong Denver tourism trends. In 2023, 40% of overnight Denver visitors arrived by plane, nearly twice the national average of 24%. The airport as well as VISIT DENVER’s partners at the Colorado Tourism Office are key to Denver’s position as both a destination and a gateway to the rest of the state with overnight Denver visitors spending an average of 1.3 nights, or 32% of their trip, in other parts of the Centennial State.

• Denver welcomed 37.4 million total visitors in 2023, including 20.5 million overnight visitors and 16 million day visitors.
• Overnight leisure visitors totaled 17.5 million in 2023, a 5% increase over 2022.
• Denver visitors spent $10.3 billion in 2023, including $8.8 billion from overnight visitors and an additional $1.6 billion in spending from day visitors. Total spending increased by almost 10% over 2022.
• Transportation spending within the destination reached nearly $3 billion, a 10.7% increase from 2022.
• Lodging spending hit $2.5 billion, up 9.1%.
• Restaurant Food and Beverage spend reached nearly $1.5 billon, a 9.7% increase.
• Retail Purchases totaled just over $1 billion, achieving a 7.8% increase.
• Recreation, Sightseeing and Entertainment totaled $749 million, a 9.3% increase.

Drew Gordon, former NBA player and brother of Denver Nuggets star, dies at 33

Former NBA player Drew Gordon, the older brother of Denver Nuggets player Aaron Gordon, has died, according to the team.

“1990 — 2024 Drew Gordon,” the team  wrote in a May 30 post on X . “The Denver Nuggets organization is devastated to learn about the tragic passing of Drew Gordon. Drew was far too young to leave this world, but his legacy will forever live on through his three beautiful children and all of his loved ones.”

“Our hearts are with Aaron and the Gordon family during this extremely difficult time.”

NBC Bay Area confirmed that Gordon died in a car accident in Portland, Oregon on Thursday. 

A six-foot-nine forward, the San Jose, California, native  had a brief NBA career , playing in nine games for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2014-2015 season, averaging 1.9 points and two rebounds per game. He played at UCLA and the University of New Mexico but was not drafted after he finished his college career in 2012.

In addition to his time with the 76ers, Gordon also played in the G League, as well as for  multiple teams overseas , with stops in France, Italy, Russia, Japan, Ukraine and Poland.

Gordon  announced his retirement  from professional basketball in 2023.

“Thank you basketball for all that you have given me! I have given you my all over the years, I’m retiring on my jersey year,” he  wrote  on X. “Thank you to all the fans, friends and family that have supported me along my journey!! Next chapter it is! Goodbye 32 hello 33.”

Gordon is survived by his wife, Angela, and three children,  according to the San Jose Mercury News .

Gordon’s brother, Aaron, won the NBA title with the Nuggets last season.
