Travel Guard by AIG

  • Offers last-minute coverage.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion Waiver available at all plan levels.
  • Plan available for business travelers.
  • Cancel For Any reason coverage only available for higher-level plans, and only reimburses up to 50% of the trip cost.
  • Trip interruption coverage doesn't apply to trips paid for with points and miles.

Travel Guard travel insurance is a great option for last-minute travelers. There are four plans from which to choose. Costs are reasonable, and plans allow more customization than you'd normally find on travel insurance policies.

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans for prospective customers, including plans oriented toward sports enthusiasts, last-minute travelers and those looking to save money.

Policies issued by Travel Guard are underwritten by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh. According to insurance rating firm AM Best, National Union Fire Insurance Company has a Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A (excellent). This means it’s unlikely to default on any payments.

Travel Guard travel insurance coverage has a lot of variety. Depending on which plan you pick — Essential, Preferred, Deluxe or Pack N' Go — you’ll have trip protections and some medical coverage.

Generally speaking, here is what to expect when purchasing a Travel Guard policy:

Trip interruption and trip cancellation : These coverages can reimburse you for nonrefundable expenses that you’ve already paid in the event that your trip is canceled or interrupted. Trip cancellation protection is not included in the Pack N' Go plan.

Travel Guard health insurance coverage : This health insurance coverage can pay for costs associated with emergency medical services during your trip.

Trip delay : Trip delay can cover expenses such as food and accommodation in the event your travel is delayed.

Emergency evacuation : If you need medical care at another facility and need to be evacuated, emergency evacuation can cover the costs.

Baggage insurance : Baggage insurance includes coverage for lost and delayed luggage, and can reimburse you for the cost of replacing lost items or purchasing new ones in the event of a delay.

Travel Guard's policies have a broad array of inclusions. It offers three comprehensive single-trip plans that can be customized to meet your travel needs. It also offers a plan designed for last-minute trips that focuses on post-departure coverage — this plan is much more affordable, but offers fewer protections.

The company also offers an annual travel insurance plan if you travel frequently and want year-round protection.

Add-on options

The types of add-ons you can include will vary based on your plan but can include:

Quarantine coverage.

Adventure sports.

Boarding and medical expenses if your pet gets sick.

Wedding cancellation.

Inclusion of a family member for coverage.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR).

Rental car insurance .

Medical coverage upgrade.

Evacuation for non-medical reasons.

Travel Guard offers plenty of options when it comes to customizability, which is great for those who need additional coverage. For example, most insurance policies automatically exclude adventure sports. The same is true for Travel Guard, unless you add on the adventure sports bundle.

You’ll want to be aware that all three of Travel Guard’s comprehensive plans will cover pre-existing conditions. However, the Pack N’ Go plan does not.

Here’s what else isn’t covered:

Coverage for trips paid for with frequent flier miles or loyalty rewards programs : Travel Guard will only protect the trips you pay for with cash. If you’re redeeming your points for that bucket list trip, you unfortunately won’t qualify for coverage.

Baggage loss for eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids or false teeth: These items should be kept with you in your carry-on as a general rule, so they won’t be covered by a Travel Guard policy.

Known events : If you knowingly book a trip with some inherent risks, it won’t be covered. For example, once the National Weather Service issues a warning for a hurricane, it becomes a known event.

Beyond this, most travel insurance plans have specific exclusions to their coverage, including:

Activities when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Extreme sports.

Named storms.

Participation in athletic events.

A sample trip for a 36-year-old traveler from Indiana to Canada for 5 days showed that the cheapest Travel Guard plan cost $135. If you were to spring for the premium plan, which increases your coverage limits, expect to pay $236.

When looking across multiple providers, the same sample trip ranges in cost from $10-$202. Note that price isn't the only differentiating factor. Coverage is not identical across plans; each company offers various levels of scope, limits and exclusions.

How much does Travel Guard travel insurance cost? Travel Guard’s travel insurance cost has quite a big spread based on the plan you select.

We generated a quote for a 34-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for a week, with a total trip cost of $2,700. Here’s how pricing shook out.

A reminder that the Pack N' Go plan is designed for spontaneous trips, so it has less protections for trip cancellation. It also doesn't include the option to get a pre-existing conditions waiver.

Like most travel insurance companies, Travel Guard travel insurance costs much more when you add in greater trip protection benefits.

If you’d like to buy a Travel Guard insurance plan, your best bet is to do so online. The process is simple and efficient and can be done in a matter of minutes. First, you’ll want to head to Travel Guard’s homepage . You’ll be prompted to fill out some personal information to create a quote, including:

Dates of travel.

Destination country.

State of residence.

When you first made a payment for your trip.

Trip cost.

Consider comparison shopping

If you're not 100% sold on purchasing a plan from Travel Guard, you can use a travel insurance aggregator to compare policies across multiple companies at once.

To decide which Travel Guard plan is best for you, you’ll want to consider what kind of trip you’re taking.

Look at coverage details

If you don’t need coverage for trip cancellation, Pack N’ Go is significantly cheaper than other options but still provides emergency medical, trip interruption and baggage insurance.

If you’d like to have as much choice as possible, the Deluxe plan offers lots of add-ons, so you can select the ones that fit your needs.

Use existing coverage

Many travel credit cards offer travel insurance, though coverage levels will vary. To qualify for this complimentary insurance, you’ll need to pay for your trip using your eligible card. Common card benefits include trip interruption insurance, baggage delay reimbursement and emergency medical insurance.

NerdWallet's ratings for travel insurance companies take into account the following details about each insurer:

Scope of coverage.

Customizability.

Consumer experience and complaints.

24-hour assistance.

Pre-existing medical conditions coverage.

Extreme sport coverage.

CFAR add on availability.

Travel health insurance.

What Is Expedia’s Travel Insurance Policy?

expedia travel guard

As much as we want our vacations to go according to plan — and many actually do — travel mishaps aren’t exactly uncommon. However, if you booked your trip with Expedia and took advantage of one of the company’s various travel insurance options, you won’t be left high and dry, figuring out solutions on your own. These plans are designed to protect you and your fellow travelers if something goes awry.

Insurance options include hotel, flight and vacation package coverage plans, each with different protection for the different aspects of your trip. Each insurance plan derives from a partnership between Expedia and Travel Guard insurance . Regardless of which type of plan you select, you can manage your trip, file claims (if necessary) and keep everything on track using Expedia’s accompanying online portal.

Basics of Expedia’s Travel Insurance Policy

Expedia partners with Travel Guard to provide travel protection services for your next vacation or any other trips you take. These services include flight insurance, hotel insurance, cruise insurance and even insurance for your entire vacation package. Expedia’s Package Protection Plan goes into effect once the company receives the appropriate plan payment.

expedia travel guard

Before choosing a plan, it’s important to browse through the descriptions and summaries of the different protection options to see what is covered and what isn’t. It won’t do you any good to pay for coverage you don’t need, and you also don’t want to risk any unpleasant surprises because you believe something is covered that isn’t.

You can access Expedia’s Customer Service Portal at any time after purchasing your insurance to change or manage your upcoming trip, check for government travel alerts and warnings, book a flight using airline credits, change the components in your vacation package and more. Expedia’s most current information is available through this portal.

Flight Insurance

Expedia has partnered with AIG’s Travel Guard to provide flight insurance via Flight Cancellation Plan and Flight Protection Plan insurance options. The Flight Cancellation Plan insures all domestic flights within the United States, except for Hawaii and Alaska. Under this insurance plan, you can expect to be reimbursed for the entire cost of your trip if you must cancel or shorten your trip for covered reasons. Each state has its own limitations and exclusions for residents.

expedia travel guard

The second flight insurance option is the Flight Protection Plan, which is available for all flights outside of the continental U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. This plan includes everything you get in the Flight Cancellation Plan, plus additional benefits, such as medical assistance and coverage for any loss or theft as well as damage to your baggage or personal belongings. Accidental death is also covered under this plan.

To book flight insurance coverage, you can add the insurance to your flight during checkout or for a period up to 24 hours after your purchase. You can cancel the insurance before your trip for up to 15 days after you book the flight as long as you haven’t filed a claim. If you pay for the insurance at the same time as your flight and then cancel the flight online, your insurance purchase will also be canceled.

Hotel Insurance

Expedia also offers two Travel Guard hotel insurance options: Hotel Booking Protection (U.S. hotels only) and Hotel Booking Protection Plus (outside U.S.). The Hotel Booking Protection plan covers trip cancellation as well as trip interruption for up to the total cost of the trip. Trip delay coverage can be used if you experience a delay of six hours or more or if a delay causes you to miss a night of a hotel stay. Baggage delay insurance protection is also included in this insurance plan. If you need to cancel or shorten your trip due to covered reasons, you will be reimbursed for the total cost of your trip, up to a maximum of $3,000.

expedia travel guard

The Hotel Booking Protection Plus plan includes everything the Hotel Booking Protection plan offers along with expense coverage for accidents, sickness and certain medical conditions. You also have insurance protection in the event of an emergency evacuation. These extra coverages are only available when staying in hotels outside the U.S.

Cruise Insurance

Expedia’s Cruise Travel Protection plan covers you if your cruise is canceled or unavoidably delayed. It also provides coverage in the event of unforeseen medical expenses along with lost luggage. Make sure you read the terms carefully for limitations and exclusions.

expedia travel guard

Vacation Package Insurance

Through its partnership with Travel Guard, Expedia provides two vacation package travel insurance options: Package Protection Plan and Pre-Travel Vacation Waiver. With the Package Protection Plan , your coverage protects you when you must cancel for certain covered reasons. You also get insurance coverage for trip delays and interruptions as well as medical expenses you may incur after your departure.

expedia travel guard

Just as the name indicates, the Pre-Travel Vacation Waiver provides protection from certain costs before you travel but doesn’t provide any coverage on your trip. The waiver allows you to cancel or change your package reservation one time before your scheduled travel date without paying any fees to make these changes.

Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying Rental Car Insurance From Expedia and Others

By William J. McGee

August 26, 2024

I have spent 39 years working in the travel industry, writing about travel, and advocating for travelers, but just like everyone, I still get caught off guard by consumer gotchas. No matter how much I know about travel, there are always new hurdles to overcome.

I made a new discovery on a road trip vacation last week after I thought I had properly purchased car rental insurance protection. The coverage I booked through Expedia turned out not to work for the rental car company I chose.

How travel booking sites sell you insurance

For my trip, I had shopped online before booking a 6-day rental of a compact car from Thrifty on Expedia for $229.23, including all mandatory taxes and fees. I knew I would be driving quite a bit—more than 1,000 miles throughout the Southwest—so I thought it best to buy insurance coverage, and I opted for the “rental car protection” option that popped up during the booking.

The policy was flagged by Expedia as “Highly recommended” and it even required a mandatory opt in/opt out before my booking could even be completed.

I selected the package that included coverage for “certain theft, vandalism, and collision damage” for $10.00 per day, totaling $60.00. Therefore, my total charge, car and insurance, would be $289.23.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the rental counter in San Antonio. (After a one-hour wait to speak to someone—but that’s a complaint for another day.) The agent politely asked if I would like to purchase insurance coverage.

I told her I already had.

She shook her head and quoted me the rate of $229.23, which didn’t include the insurance I had bought.

I retrieved the printed copy of the AIG/Travel Guard policy confirmation (pictured below), proving that I had paid Expedia $60.00 for daily coverage.

She explained that no, this was “third-party” coverage, and it was not fully recognized by Thrifty.

expedia travel guard

What “third-party” insurance coverage really means

Rental car desks sell Collision Damage Waivers (CDW) and Loss Damage Waivers (LDW) that are just that: agreements that waive your responsibility after accidents or other mishaps. As the car rental company Thrifty notes  on its site , in most cases purchasing them will mean you won’t have to file a claim or pay a deductible in case of damage. In simple terms, if you buy it from Thrifty, you can walk away. (Or fly away.)

The agent broke it down:

Yes, the coverage would apply in the unfortunate case of an accident, theft, etc.

But …Thrifty would not waive my responsibility as it would have done with a damage waivers that it had issued itself.

In other words, if I had an accident with my third-party coverage, I could not just “walk away.” The burden would still be on me to sort everything out.

I would still have to personally perform as a go-between for a complicated tangle of parties that would include Hertz/Thrifty (which rented the car), Expedia (which sold the rental and the insurance), and AIG/Travel Guard (the insurer behind the box that I’d clicked), plus anyone else who might be involved.

So let’s lay out the problem here. If you are using your own coverage for a rental (via a credit card or your existing personal insurance policy), then you’re accepting that in the case of an accident, you agree to work through any settlements with your bank or insurance company all by yourself.

If I had been involved in even a minor accident during this rental, any damage to my rental car would not have been waived by Thrifty on the Expedia policy—but it would have been waived had I purchased a policy directly from Thrifty.

In theory, if the accident was complicated, I could be tied up for weeks or months trying to figure out on paperwork and settlements and chase down customer service representatives.

You’d have thought that the coverage Expedia sold me would have prevented that. The whole point of purchasing a rental waiver, you'd think, is to waive away negotiations, settlements, and administrative hoops.

I learned my lesson. The next time I book CDW or LDW, I’ll purchase such waivers directly through the rental firm.

Before I left the counter, as if to drive home the mistake I made, the agent had me sign an agreement showing I had “declined” all four of Thrifty’s insurance products.

That night, I double-checked my credit card account and found the rental charge of $229.23 had been debited by Thrifty's parent company Hertz, while the insurance charge of $60.00 had been debited separately by Expedia. Indeed, the insurance I bought was not from Thrifty itself.

What the travel booking sites don't tell you about insurance

Whenever I encounter travel industry problems on the road, I always try to reverse-engineer to see what I—and others—can learn.

Unfortunately, in this case Thrifty’s website was not much help. I thoroughly searched and could find no mention of insurance waivers, let alone mentions of third-party booking site waiver policies. The site’s “Extras & add-ons” page only details child seats and disabled driver assists.

I had to leave the rental car company’s site and use a search engine to locate the info on Thrifty’s site.

Of course, if I had chosen to book via Thrifty.com, then during the booking process I would have been offered several insurance options, ranging from $7.51 to $34.99 a day for a compact car. But finding that info in advance of actually booking isn’t easy.

The site of Thrifty’s corporate parent Hertz offers better info on insurance products. And Hertz does a good job explaining how personal auto insurance policies and/or credit card coverage may or may not be adequate for rentals.

But renters don’t do a good job of explicitly warning you that third-party booking sites may present challenges .

And what of Expedia? Well, a web search will lead you to a handy page on Expedia.com entitled “ Demystifying car rental insurance .” It’s a detailed and helpful guide to the very Travel Guard product I purchased. But it still does not address purchasing rental coverage through third-party sites.

Finally, I also followed up with AIG/Travel Guard. But there, too, there was no warning about car rental companies not recognizing outside waivers.

Should you buy insurance from Expedia or similar booking sites?

Rental car insurance can make a lot of sense  in some cases , but not in others. What’s more, it  differs considerably  from the auto insurance you might have on your own personal vehicles at home.

• If you’re purchasing an insurance waiver during any booking process, then make sure it will truly waive any post-travel hassles. That might mean that you have to buy such coverage directly through the rental firm, not through a third party.

• Don’t wait until you’re standing on a (likely very long) line at the counter to consider your options. There are instances where your own credit card, car insurance, and even home insurance coverage may be adequate, and other times when buying coverage makes sense. Research this in advance, especially since some rental agents are incentivized to both scare you and upsell you at the counter.

Thankfully, my 1,129-mile trip was free of problems and the rental insurance wasn’t needed in the end. But it’s 2024, and online travel bookings seem to be getting more—rather than less—complicated.

Add third-party car rental insurance to the growing list labeled caveat emptor —“let the buyer beware.”

My wife and I experienced a 24 hour trip delay on our trip to Amsterdam on April 25, 2013. A copy of our trip invoice from Viking River Cruises and a copy from United Airlines explaining their flight delay was mailed to your office on June 24, 2013 and received in your office and signed for on June 24, 2013. When I went to your web site to check on my claim it said the records cited above had not been received. I would like to have an explanation about the situation, and be told when the claim will be processed and paid. David L. Sockler

Website is terrible. Cannot find claim form and any information irrelevant to my claim.

You wanted me to submit claim twice??? Policy # 1206626153. I would never have purchased this knowing the claim submission would be impossible. Do you have record of this?

My wife was sick and went to the local hospitals Urgent Care/Emergency Room the day before our trip to Boston. The doctor told her she had a bad virus and to stay in bed and that it would take 7-10 days to run its course. I have the Doctors name and the nurse who was with him. I also have the pertinent address, phone numbers, etc. What I don’t have is all the medical records for her for the last 6 months and the long form filled from the doctor….We are old and not very computer savy..Why cant you just call the hospital and talk with them and they can confirm everything????

this whole thing apparently is a fraud. Send you to sites with no help from expedia/or insurance.

Another scam, make it as difficult as possible until you give up

The comments section for “Travel Guard Insurance Claim” tells all when you see that ALL comments are overwhelmingly NEGATIVE. And my experience with Travel Guard is no different. After so much time and effort is fruitlessly spent in attempting to receive a refund on your plane fare, you finally realize that you are wasting your time and, in agreement with some of the negative comments I read, that this is indeed just another scam. So inform everyone you know of this SCAM so they don’t fall victim to it like obviously so many others already have (Parties involved in my case: 1) American Airlines, 2) Travelocity, 3) Travel Guard .

I need to cancel travel plans for my and my sister

need to file a claim , but after reading these comments , seem like I’m stuck or scammed.. why would expedia allow them as a second insurance on the page ..

Terrible Going to mail in my claim can’t do it online

I have read all these negative remarks by clients that had purchased your travel guard INS. 7 I surely hope that I am not having the same experience as all the peoples claims that I have read, also the filing claim on your web site is terrible

I made this flight then found out my mom was terminally ill changed my flight to Minnesota and cancelled my flight to Arlanta

OK I will let the New York attorney general know what is going on here and see what they say and do about your company. there is no form here to fill out. Only a lot of very angry customers getting ripped off. you kept me on the phone line for a very long time with no one to talk too. you are charging everyone insurance and just keeping the money. I paid $92.for nothing. it seems everyone paid for nothing here. Not even one person said thank you for your good service. everyone is very mad.

Cannot get on phone with an agent or customer service representative. Cannot get a claim form to fill out on line or one to print and fill out. What kind of service do you offer?

This is Bullshit, cannot make out how to file a claim. will continue to call and press until I get what I paid for, will advise everyone I know to avoid this policy offer, avoid any travel site that offers travelguard…

You make it almost impossible to file a claim or get any help. This was a total waste of time and money.

This is a scam i will contact the AG i will never use travel guard or expedia again ever take myairline ticket and shove it

I’ve had an awful experience with this company. The website is worthless. When I attempted to find out the progress of my claim I was advised that there was no such claim. It appears that like almost all the customer comments I’ve read I am a victim of a scam as well. Consequently, I will be filing a complaint with the California Attorney General’s office. I booked airline tickets and purchased the insurance on Expedia. How could it be possible that customers could have this level of dissatisfaction with the service and Expedia not be aware of it?

I filed a claim. Haven’t heard anything back regarding my claim. Been over a month. This is a scam.

Very poor service. Cannot contact a rep. by phone and cannot find the right forms on line to print to file a medical claim. Spent two hours and still no results. Still holding on the phone…terrible service.

ditto as above; cannot contact any company rep by phone and cannot find correct forms online, under section 4 of website. this is a worldwide pandemic, COVID-19 and CDC indicated level #3 avoid non-essential travel! Your company is a total scam

CANCELLED my cruise due coronavirus and medical condition. all I want is the premium refunded $144 dollars. I never used the insurance and we are not scheduled to depart until Oct. 2,2020 six months from now. I have discussed this with TRAVELOCITY AND TRAAVEL GUARD AND EACH ONE TELLS ME TO CALL THE OTHER ONE. no one will solve the issue.

I will never ever buy insurance on anything after dealing with this company . Disgusting

why u have to go trough. so much to file a claim. I’ll never purches ins. again with you!!through Frontier air line.

This is a total scam. Tried to make a claim and the website kept directing me to add mutliple chrome extensions. Makes no sense. I will NEVER buy travel insurance again!!!

I can’t believe you people stay in business!

Indeed horrible company if anyone need insurance please bypass this company it will break your heart please pass this information to all friends and family. I am very disappointed but if you do decide to venture into this abyss note that resolve is the art of the day.

Our cruise that we boarded on Feb 2020 was interrupted due to Covid. Filed a claim. Their website is terrible. I have called several times and I am told that they are sooo swamped that it’s just taking longer. Months have gone by. Who can I contact to report this- they took my money and have failed to deliver.

Your insurance is a scam I have reying to get my money back for months They denied my claim for the wrong reason Keep telling me they will reopen my claim they will call nothing Will not let you talk to claims department I will file a claim with State Board Of Insurance against your company

This insurance is truly the most frustrating and fraudulent I have ever had to deal with. I placed a deposit on our vacation through AMI Locals Reservations, Anna Maria,FL in the amount of $1,976.24 on July 20, 2019. I then purchased travel insurance protection from Travel Guard in the amount of $212.00 on October 12, 2019 for our vacation May 30,2020 June 6,, 2020. At the end of April 2020, mid-pandemic, I suffered a ruptured appendix, had emergency surgery and a hospital stay of 6 days due to complications including severe exacerbation to my existing, chronic lung disease. I was advised no rravel from April 28, 2020 to at least June 9, 2020,not only because of my recovery from surgery and the compromise to my lung disease,, and my age of 72,all presented a very high risk for contracting COVID.. On July 2, 2020 I sent AIG Claims all pertinent information along with my Dr.,s confirmation, I also e-mailed all materials on July 23, 2020. I received a follow-up e-mail from them on July 23, 2020 stating an analyst will review my document ion and contact me with any further required information. I have never received any additional contact from them. Their phone is exasperating with afloat of jumbo jumbo. I am absolutely furious at this stage and, too, will NEVER use their services again. COVID. I had to cancel our travel and when well enough,

This insurance is a scam I have been denied Trying to appeal no knows what they are doing Claims department must have been given a blanket reponse of hang up on your customer, transferred to a wrong department etc I have been working on this since Feb They lost my papers?? Filed three times than suddendly denied Im filing a complaint with State Board of Insurance
