Frequently Asked Questions

General questions  (16).

All you need to know to understand why you should never leave the U.S. without a TravelCare protection plan.

  • Many U.S. health plans do not provide adequate – if any – coverage overseas.
  • U.S. health plans generally do not cover emergency evacuations, which can cost you up to $200,000 or more, depending upon your circumstance and location.
  • Medicare does not provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States (except in rare emergency circumstances on our borders with Canada and Mexico) or emergency evacuations.

Yes. If medical treatment or evacuation is necessary for an insured with COVID-19 during their trip, the plan covers related expenses. Make sure to purchase both the TravelCare evacuation plan and the optional medical plan to cover both evacuation and medical expenses.

Unfortunately, that situation is not uncommon. Here in the U.S., where most our healthcare is financed by private insurance, people can receive medical treatment and admission to a hospital by presenting their health plan ID card. In other countries, where healthcare is generally provided under state-financed or state-provided health systems, that is not the case. Their financial infrastructure is not set up to provide care and then send a bill to a third-party to pay the costs after-the-fact. That is why it is common for foreign hospitals to require an up-front payment – often ten thousand dollars or more – or a "guarantee of payment" from a travel insurance provider they are familiar with, like Nationwide. You do not want treatment delayed or denied because you are having difficulty quickly coming up with the cash or sufficient credit balances on your credit cards.

It is highly unlikely that your regular medical plan will:

  • know the best place to get treatment in your foreign location;
  • pay a hospital in advance if necessary to assure your admission or treatment;
  • immediately speak with your treating doctor in his/her language to assess your condition, your treatment plans, and their ability to provide appropriate care;
  • pay tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars to evacuate you to a higher level of care if you cannot receive adequate care where you are;
  • accept medical records in a foreign language or pay claims in foreign currencies;
  • be available 24/7 to receive calls to assist you and advocate for you in any language.

Most people need emergency travel assistance and evacuation services, and Travel Medical insurance, to get proper protection – even if they have great health coverage here in the U.S.

Medicare does not cover medical expenses incurred while traveling abroad except in rare circumstances. (Medicare may cover you if you're in the U.S., but the closest hospital is across the border, or if you have a medical emergency while traveling through Canada between Alaska and another state).

Only some Medicare Supplement plans cover emergency health care provided in a foreign country. For those that do, the coverage: (1) is limited to 80% of $50,000 after you pay either a $250 or $2,000 deductible, (2) does not apply for emergencies after you have been on a trip for 60 or more days, and (3) does not provide any coverage at all for emergency medical evacuations.

The government does not take financial responsibility to cover the costs of Americans that become ill or that are seriously injured abroad. While a consular officer can assist in the transfer of funds from the United States, payment of emergency services including evacuation, repatriation, hospitalization and other expenses is the responsibility of the traveler.

Before selecting Nationwide as our preferred carrier, we considered most of the top U.S. providers of international travel medical insurance. We feel Nationwide offers the best combination of broad benefits, affordable rates, financial strength and high-quality customer service. People know and trust the Nationwide brand.

We selected United Healthcare Global as our preferred travel assistance provider as they are a worldwide leader in their field and provide services to many of the U.S. leading multinational and global companies. We feel UHG offers the best combination of financial strength, operational excellence and medical and security expertise to manage any situation that a traveler may experience while in a foreign country. People know and trust the United Healthcare brand.

United Healthcare Global is a global medical, safety and security travel assistance company that delivers:

  • a world-class, worldwide assistance infrastructure
  • first-world standards of primary and emergency medical care in remote and hazardous locations

  • robust medical, safety and security protocols

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, based in Columbus, Ohio, is one of the largest and strongest diversified insurance and financial services organizations in the U.S. and is rated A+ by both A.M. Best and Standard & Poor's. The company provides customers a full range of insurance and financial services, including auto insurance, motorcycle, boat, homeowners, pet, life insurance, farm, commercial insurance, annuities, mortgages, mutual funds, public and private sector retirement plans, long-term savings plans and specialty health services.

The assistance company is a 24/7 multilingual service available to assist you when you are traveling internationality. They have the expertise and resources to help you when you are faced with travel, medical, legal, personal security and other emergencies or concerns when traveling internationally, regardless of the severity. You simply call a toll-free phone number from within the country (or you can call them collect from anywhere in the world), and they will assist you.

It is important that the assistance company is notified as soon as possible. They will monitor your care and work through the complex details of foreign hospitalizations. They will immediately speak with your treating doctor to assess your condition, your treatment plans, and whether or not an evacuation is necessary. They will update your family, employer and personal physician as appropriate. In addition, they will coordinate all insurance verifications and admission details.

The assistance company can direct you to the hospital in your locale that is most capable in getting you treatment. If you elected to purchase the TravelCare Travel Medical Insurance, they will coordinate all Nationwide insurance verifications and billing, including making advance payment arrangements with the hospital, like issuing a "guarantee of payment" on behalf of Nationwide. This ensures that there is no delay or denial of medical treatment because you are unable to make the up-front payment or because your regular insurance is not recognized. The assistance company will settle any guarantees of payment with the hospital on Nationwide's behalf.

The assistance company has expertise in knowing the capabilities of international hospitals and clinics. That information, in conjunction with their assessment of the treating physician's diagnosis and treatment plans, will enable the assistance company's physicians to make an evaluation of whether the local hospital is capable of providing you the treatment you need. If the assistance company's doctors are of the opinion that you cannot receive appropriate care there, they will make arrangements to have you evacuated to either: (1) the nearest hospital where adequate treatment can be obtained or (2) to a hospital of your choice near your home in the U.S. to obtain further treatment or recover (or both). The assistance company will consult with all parties involved and fully manage all logistics of the evacuation.

In the event of a security situation, you can call the assistance company for help at any time. Additionally, if the situation is deemed to require Non-medical Emergency Evacuation, you are covered up to $100,000.

You can call the assistance company for help at any time. They will assist you with lost or stolen passports, legal referrals, translation services, emergency transfers of funds and a variety of other travel related issues.

Questions About the Plan  (12)

Answers to the most common TravelCare plan questions are below. More plan questions? Call (866) 223-2835 option 4. (M-F 8:30AM to 5:00PM EST)

As a natural extension of our health and safety expertise, it became increasingly apparent that we also needed to make it easier for the medical community to convey the importance of securing Emergency Evacuation services and Travel Medical Insurance to ensure that our travelers are not left:

  • stranded without access to appropriate resources in the event of a medical or security emergency, or
  • unable to secure medical treatment or admission to a hospital because their primary insurance at home does not provide adequate coverage or services when overseas

Sure, in plain English, here's a summary of what TravelCare plans cover:

If you need to be evacuated for emergency medical reasons, the Emergency Assistance Services will make all the arrangements and cover the costs of transporting you with appropriate medical supervision to the nearest appropriate medical facility and/or taking you home. Costs for air ambulance services can run over $200,000 depending upon your location and circumstance.

In addition, if you need to be evacuated for political or emergency security reasons, the Emergency Assistance Services will make all the arrangements and cover the costs up to $100,000 to transport you in a secure fashion to the nearest safe place, and when conditions allow, then return you back to your point of origin or take you home.

There are also a variety of additional services included and available 24/7 that help you with the kind of problems international travelers often experience.  Click here  for Complete Emergency Assistance Service details.

When you purchase the optional Travel Medical Insurance, it will make advance payment arrangements to get you into the best foreign hospital in your locale (generally foreign facilities will not agree to provide care, then bill your insurance at home), and then pay your foreign hospital and medical expenses directly, up to $150,000. They deal with the medical records in foreign languages, the foreign currencies, etc., and you have no deductibles or co-pays.  Click here  for Complete Travel Medical Insurance details including plan maximums based on your age at time of purchase.

Coverage may be purchased with VISA, MasterCard or American Express.

A trip can be as short as 1 day or as long as 90 days; however the minimum premium equals 7 days of coverage.

Nationwide will pay your providers directly for your covered expenses, or will reimburse you for covered expenses if you paid the providers directly. If Nationwide then determines the benefits paid under their plan are eligible benefits under any other benefit plan, they may seek to recover expenses from the other plan to the extent the other plan would have covered as well. Any recoveries Nationwide makes helps to keep the cost of their coverage down.

All coverage will begin on the later of the Effective Date, or upon Your departure from Your Home Country

Your coverage will end at 11:59 P.M. local time on the date that is the earliest of the following: (a) upon Your return to Your Home Country; (b) when Your Trip exceeds ninety (90) days.

No. Both the Emergency Evacuation and Assistance plan and Travel Medical Insurance plan will pay 100% of the reasonable and customary charges for the expenses they cover up to the plans' maximums.

What Generali Global Assistance Is Known For

Generali Global Assistance keeps things simple by offering three main travel insurance plans for consumers: the basic Standard plan, the mid-tier Preferred plan and the Premium plan with superior coverage. These plans stand out in several areas, including their relatively high limits for emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation, robust coverage amounts for travel delays, included concierge services, and 24-hour travel assistance.

The company's Premium plan offers the most coverage and highest policy limits by far, as well as access to several add-ons you can't purchase with other plans. For example, the Premium plan from Generali Global Assistance includes coverage for preexisting medical conditions, but only if travel insurance is purchased within 24 hours of making a final trip payment. This is unique from many other plans that cover preexisting conditions, which typically require you to purchase travel insurance within a few weeks of making an initial trip deposit instead.

This top-tier plan also includes rental car coverage automatically, and it's the only plan from Generali that lets consumers add on cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance . With this type of insurance, individuals can cancel their trip for any reason and get part of their upfront costs back.

With CFAR coverage from Generali Global Assistance, however, travelers are only reimbursed up to 60% for prepaid travel expenses like airfare, hotels and tours. This is less than you'll get with many other travel insurance plans that let you buy CFAR coverage and reimburse at 70% to 80% of prepaid trip costs. Not only that, but you can only add CFAR coverage to a plan if you purchase travel insurance within 24 hours of making an initial deposit on your trip.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance for Individual Trips

Generali Global Assistance offers three tiers of travel insurance protection to choose from. The basic Standard plan includes essential coverage with lower limits, and the Preferred and Premium plans offer more coverages with higher limits and more optional benefits.

The chart below highlights what you'll get with each of the travel insurance plans from Generali Global Assistance, plus the policy limits that apply.

As you compare travel insurance plans from Generali Global Assistance, you should know about some of the fine print terms that can apply. The most important details are highlighted below:

  • Baggage delays: This coverage doesn't kick in until at least 24 hours with the Standard plan, 18 hours with Preferred coverage and 12 hours with the Premium plan.
  • Baggage insurance: Items lost in baggage without a receipt are reimbursed at 75% of actual cash value (not replacement value).
  • Sporting equipment: Sports equipment that's lost or stolen in baggage without a receipt will be reimbursed at 75% of actual cash value (not replacement value).
  • Sporting equipment delays: This coverage requires an 18-hour delay with the Preferred plan and a 12-hour delay with the Premium plan.
  • Travel delay coverage: This protection kicks in after a 10-hour delay with Standard plans, a delay of eight or more hours with the Preferred plan, and a six-hour delay with the Premium plan.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Costs

Costs for travel insurance from Generali Global Assistance vary based on the plan you select, the number of travelers in a plan, the total cost for a trip, the age of travelers and other factors. To help you get an idea of how much you'll pay for a plan, we applied for travel insurance quotes for several different trips that cost between $2,500 and $14,000.

Generali Global Assistance is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, where it also has an A+ rating. However, the company has a very low average star rating of just 1.11 out of 5 stars across 300-plus user reviews on the platform. The company has also closed more than 500 customer complaints with the BBB in the last three years, 258 of which were resolved in the last 12 months.

Generali has a 4.57 rating out of 14,000-plus reviews on InsureMyTrip and a 4.33 rating out of about 4,500 reviews on Squaremouth. On Trustpilot, the company has an average star rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars across more than 400 reviews from past customers. Below, we listed examples of positive and negative user reviews from several platforms that show some of the best and worst attributes of the company.

I've used Generali Travel Insurance in South America and Japan

I've used Generali Travel Insurance in the past. I like the website purchase as it is straightforward and displays 3 options with clear coverage. It only asked a few questions to filter the individual to the right product. – Richard S. via Trustpilot

Generali Global Assistance Standard

Generali was professional and courteous. I had to file a medical cancellation claim and it was easy to file and was resolved very quickly. Generali was great and I would use them again. – Edward K. via InsureMyTrip

Policy: Standard

My experience with Global was very good. The only issue was a computer glitch in their new claim system. It was a little confusing at times but my claim agent was very helpful and helped me get through the process. They settled my claim much faster than I anticipated. It was overall, a good experience. – Katherine via Squaremouth

If I could give this company 0 stars I would. My wife went into labor and they refused to refund us our vacation rental booking because they didn't consider a woman going into labor as an emergency. We even talked to them before canceling and they told us to cancel the whole booking to get our full refund. This is a HORRIBLE company that needs to be investigated thoroughly. Shame on VRBO for using them as a travel insurance company. – Tanner B. via Better Business Bureau

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. I think the people (or bots) giving higher stars have not had to make a claim. I was diagnosed with AML and will be hospitalized for a month to receive a stem cell transplant and needed to cancel my trip. I have uploaded all the documentation they requested. I have not been able to talk to an actual person. I have tried 4 different phone numbers and sent emails to the suggested address only to get an automated response. This company is a complete scam! – Denise via Trustpilot

Travel Medical Insurance Plans for Travelers

Travel health insurance will cover the costs of getting medical attention in case of an emergency abroad. Plans also include medical evacuation, repatriation, trip interruption, and more. This type of coverage is necessary when you’re going outside your country for periods of up to a year or more. Even if you have a domestic medical plan, there is no guarantee that it will be accepted abroad.

Learn more about travel medical policies in this article and get to know which plans for traveling abroad fit your needs.

What is International Travel Health Insurance?

When traveling outside your home country, buying medical insurance as part of your international travel plan is vital to protect yourself against accidents or illnesses. Even if you have private medical insurance issued in your home country, it will most likely not cover you on your trip abroad. And even if it does, there is a chance that the coverage will be insufficient to provide the care you might need during your trip.

What Does Travelers' Medical Insurance Cover?

Depending on the plan you choose, your travel insurance policy can offer:

  • Freedom to seek treatment with a hospital or doctor of your choice
  • Maximum limits from $50,000 to up to $8,000,000
  • 24/7 access to an emergency assistance medical hotline to speak with medical experts
  • Deductible options from $0 to up to $25,000
  • Renewable for up to 36 months
  • Other benefits like travel delay/cancellation, baggage loss/delay
  • Universal Rx pharmacy discount savings
  • Repatriation and emergency evacuation

Is Travel Health Insurance Worth It?

The best travel medical insurance plans combine the benefits of travel insurance plans with additional health and medical coverage. Whenever you travel to another country, it is a necessity to have the right international plan that will cover you in case the unexpected happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does travel health insurance cost.

You can see in the table below that plans can cost from as low as $0.80 per day to as high as $5 a day , sometimes more. Monthly rates, ranging from $40 to $60, are also available, sometimes providing better value. How much an international travel health insurance plan costs will depend on the length of the trip, your age, medical limits, complications, and the deductible you choose by the time you purchase the plan.

Emergency medical plans for travelers are surprisingly affordable. The average cost of an international travel medical insurance plan is $2 per day. It is very affordable compared to the high cost of medical care should something go wrong on your trip.

Plans are often of a sort duration, within the travel period you have indicated, so the risks are less for insurers. As a result, medical insurance costs for traveling abroad are also significantly lower. Travel health policies also do not cover trip cancellations , so their premiums are lower than usual.

Costs and Benefits of a Travel Medical Insurance Plan

The cost of your plan will cover several benefits, all under one policy. For the low price listed here, you get emergency medical coverage abroad, trip interruption benefits, repatriation, medical evacuation, 24/7 travel assistance, and coverage for lost or stolen items. Some plans include personal liability coverage, natural disasters, political evacuation, and more.

How Optional Coverage Adds to the Cost of Your Policy

Many plans offer additional optional benefits for an additional cost. For example, you can add coverage for adventure trips, mountaineering, or Accidental Death and Disability (AD&D). Each additional benefit will increase the price of your plan. In general, the increase in premiums is affordable and worth the added expense if you feel you need that additional coverage.

What Are the Different Levels of Health Insurance for Traveling Abroad?

There are various levels of international travel health insurance plans from some of today’s leading insurers. These plans can range from very basic emergency health coverage to comprehensive health care, including prescriptions, medical evacuation, and insurance for high-risk activities.

  • The most basic level of travel insurance covers emergency medical needs while you’re away from home. If you fall ill or get injured while traveling, this type of policy will usually cover your treatment. Some plans let you add higher maximums for medical coverage so you can get care for significant medical expenses.
  • You can add features to your policy like prescription plans, repatriation, emergency evacuation, and coverage for pre-existing conditions. Depending on the plan, some of these might already be covered.
  • You can also add riders for so-called “extreme sports,” which cover you if you want to paraglide, climb mountains, or do zipline tours in the jungle.
  • Yet another type of travel insurance is trip cancellation, which pays you back if your vacation is interrupted or called off for a set list of reasons. A more expensive version of this is called Cancel For Any Reason or CFAR, which reimburses your trip costs if you suddenly can’t go for a reason that’s not otherwise covered. These plans include medical coverage, but you should check how much and whether you need more.

Among our most popular plans for US citizens is the GeoBlue Voyager Plan , which allows travelers to customize their coverage with different medical maximums and deductibles. You can be confident that your coverage, benefits, and service will be excellent.

Atlas Travel Insurance is a comprehensive travel medical policy that includes hospitalization and doctor coverage. It also includes coverage for lost luggage. You can customize the policy to include optional coverage for extreme sports .

The Patriot Platinum Insurance provides optional coverage for extra riders, including personal belongings and and extreme sports. This is perhaps the best medical policy for traveling abroad because it provides world-class coverage and access to the best service and assistance for traveling outside your home country.

You can review the list we made of the Best Travel Insurance Companies to get a better idea of which provider to choose.

For long-term travelers, expats, or individuals moving abroad for a year or longer, an international medical insurance plan might be a better option. These plans provide more comprehensive medical benefits but lack some of the coverage offered in travel health plans, such as trip interruption.

What Is the Cheapest Travel Medical Insurance Plan?

We offer a variety of medical plans for traveling abroad, and they come at a range of different price points.

When it comes to medical coverage, the best value travel insurance plan is one that covers specific benefits you need at a price you can afford. Some inexpensive plans do not cover the most important benefits or cover them with limited value. Other low-cost policies provide considerable travelers' medical insurance coverage, but their service is not as good, so it will be frustrating to use it in emergencies.

International Citizens Insurance has filtered the best insurance providers that offer affordable plans with good coverage and excellent service. For the most affordable and reliable plans, we recommend the following options:

How Do I Purchase an International Travel Medical Policy?

Applying for a travel health plan is easy. Just answer a few questions about yourself and the planned trip to get the initial quote. From there, you can refine the plan and see how much the travelers' medical insurance will cost by selecting and deselecting different benefits and their maximum coverage amounts. You can also tweak the deductibles, optional add-on features, and other portions of the policy, if possible.

Use our Plan Picker to get started!

When you are satisfied with the quote after adjusting the cost and benefits of the plan, you can proceed with the online application and pay for the plan using your credit card. A confirmation email will be sent along with policy documentation and relevant contact details should you need emergency medical assistance on your next trip.

We have listed some of the best medical insurance for international travel. Just follow the links on each one to learn more about the plan.

Do These Plans Cover My Visa Requirements?

In most cases, they do. The short term medical insurance plans we offer are designed to meet, and even exceed, most visa requirements of most countries. We also have plans that can meet Schengen Visa Insurance requirements.

Before traveling to a country, check the visa requirements to ensure you purchase the maximum benefit and deductible amounts required. Most countries require at least $50,000 of coverage in medical benefits, along with a specific deductible amount.

Check the visa requirements for the country you are traveling to, and then when purchasing your policy, you can select the level and benefits that meet those requirements.

Can You Buy Just Travel Medical Insurance?

Yes, definitely.

International travel medical insurance plans are designed to cover emergency medical expenses should you get sick or injured while traveling abroad. Suppose you are in an accident and need medical care. In that case, these plans are designed to help you find a doctor, get you treated in the best facilities available, cover necessary medical prescriptions, and provide continuous care.

Note: These plans will typically not cover any pre-existing conditions you might have. Before you sign up for a policy, check the part pertaining to pre-existing conditions to clarify any questions or concerns regarding that portion.

Your policy may not cover treatment for accidents or illnesses that occur while participating in certain dangerous activities. Some plans offer adventure sports coverage as an optional add-on. If you plan to partake in hazardous activities or sports events that pose a high risk of getting injured, it is best to get this add-on on top of your base-level coverage.

Some policies, known as trip cancellation plans , also cover the cost of your trip if you have to cancel, and are typically more expensive. If you only want coverage for medical emergencies, a travel medical plan is right for you.

How Does International Travel Medical Insurance Compare to Trip Insurance?

With the wide variety in names and coverage of travel, trip, and medical plans, it can be confusing to select which one is the most appropriate for your needs. Different service providers offer several levels of coverage, so a travel insurance plan provided by one insurer could be completely different from those offered by competitors.

Trip insurance is a short-term solution that covers trip cancellation, protection, and limited emergency medical coverage. This type of policy is usually available only for up to 62 days.

A travel health insurance plan is more comprehensive. It provides increased medical coverage from what a regular trip or travel insurance policy does. This type of policy is best for travel periods lasting from 5 days up to a year.

If you are considering longer-term coverage or more comprehensive medical benefits, read these guides to help you see the available options:

  • Expatriate Insurance or Travel Insurance: What is the Difference?
  • Overseas Health Insurance Coverage

Do I Need to Buy Health Insurance for Traveling Abroad?

Travel health insurance is a short-term solution for those who are traveling outside their home country anywhere between 5 days and a year. Whether it is for business or pleasure purposes, getting adequate coverage is an essential part of ensuring safe travels.

Having a health plan at home will not guarantee you coverage when you travel to other countries. And usually, if it does provide coverage, it will be limited and will not cover the most important areas that need to be addressed.

The plans we offer can work for a broad range of traveling individuals, including international vacationers, immigrants, relatives visiting from overseas, and foreign au pairs and nannies.

The best part about global travel health insurance policies is that they are available to all nationalities traveling abroad.

Which Countries Require Travel Medical Insurance to Enter?

Most countries that were requiring medical travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage at the height of the pandemic are no longer requiring it. However, it is still highly recommended. (Read our guide for more specific details on the latest travel insurance requirements.) Double-check all requirements before booking your travel policy. Below is a list of countries that still require travel medical insurance as of December 2023.

  • Saudi Arabia
  • the Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • the Netherlands
  • Switzerland

How Much Travel Medical Insurance Do I Need?

It depends on where you’re going, what your home coverage is like, and what you plan to get up to!

  • For shorter trips, you can probably get away with less coverage. But if you’re traveling extensively, you might think about a more thorough policy. If you are taking several trips throughout the year, consider annual travel insurance so you’re always covered.
  • How’s your health? If you have conditions that need regular treatment or medications, make sure your policy is up to the level of care you need while abroad. Most plans will exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions, so be aware of that.
  • If you’re going somewhere with a high level of medical care easily available, you probably don’t need medical evacuation or repatriation. Consider adding it if you’re going into the wilderness, staying somewhere rural and far from care, or making an adventure trip.
  • Speaking of, what are you planning to do on your vacation? You might be surprised by some things insurance companies consider “extreme sports.” If you’re planning anything outdoorsy, check if your activity requires special coverage.
  • Some countries require a travel policy to get a visa. For instance, the Schengen visa requires a minimum of $50,000 in medical coverage. Check the visa rules for the place you’re traveling to.

Annual, Multi-Trip Travel Insurance Plans for Frequent Travelers

But a multi-trip or annual travel insurance plan can cover all trips outside your home country during the year. This is usually valid for a year and up to a certain number of days per trip. This is a more cost-effective medical insurance for traveling abroad, especially if you are a frequent traveler.

Long-Distance Medical Transport: A Guide to 7 Different Options

If you’re traveling and have medical concerns that require specialized transport, what are your options? Let’s dive in.

Published on May 21st, 2024 in Medical Evacuation

If you’re experiencing an emergency during your travels that requires you to seek long-distance medical transport, this guide is for you.

Medical emergencies are always stressful, of course, but if you’re out of your country and comfort zone, figuring out specialized travel arrangements can be particularly overwhelming.

A sudden fall or accident can turn a dream vacation into a living nightmare, and seeking out long-distance medical transportation can be a daunting process. But it can be necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for your loved one should the unthinkable occur.

You might be wondering how to ensure safe and comfortable travel for you or your loved ones, what it might cost, and what options are available.

This guide cuts through the confusion, offering you clear and actionable information on coordinating these vital services. From evaluating providers to understanding the in-transit care process, we’ve got your concerns covered.

What to expect during the transportation process

The experience you or a loved one has during long-distance medical transportation varies significantly depending on the type of transportation (more on that later), but there are a few general things you can expect. First off, the attending physician will provide the best transportation recommendation for the care you need. For instance, if you have a broken arm but still have some mobility, a nurse escort on a commercial flight might be the best option.

But for a life-threatening injury or illness, you may require an air ambulance.

The medical team will also help coordinate with your insurance provider or travel assistance company to see what type of transportation is covered or offered.

The next general factor of medical transportation is the team that’s involved. No matter which type of transportation you use, a team of experienced medical professionals takes charge of the patient’s well-being.

Throughout the journey, flight nurses or trained paramedics oversee the medical equipment and medication, ready to deliver essential care at any time. These healthcare practitioners closely monitor the patient’s vital signs, administering medications as needed, and are poised to respond to any medical emergencies that may arise mid-transit.

The transportation, whether it be ground ambulances or air transport, is chosen based on a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical condition, urgency, the travel distance, and the care level required during the transfer.

Another constant presence in long-distance medical transport is state-of-the-art medical equipment. From basic life support to advanced life support, to equipment used in critical care units are tailored to meet the diverse medical needs of patients and to provide the appropriate range of medical monitoring and care.

All vehicles come equipped with advanced safety features like airbags and wheelchair restraints, ensuring that during transit, the patient’s safety is never compromised.

The commitment to travel safely is further reinforced through regular checks and maintenance protocols, establishing a foundation of trust and reliability.

Factors that influence the cost of long-distance medical transport

Navigating the financial landscape of long-distance medical transport can be as complex as the medical conditions it serves.

A significant determinant of cost is the mode of transport chosen.

A commercial aircraft with a flight nurse can be cost-effective, whereas an air ambulance may be a pricier but medically necessary alternative. Commercial airlines, of course, have a shared pricing model where all the passengers ‘chip in’ so to speak, but with an air ambulance you will likely be the only passenger; hence the cost. Additionally, there is a significant difference in the cost to run and maintain different aircraft types (jets vs. small propeller planes) that also plays a role.

And of course, the patient’s specific medical requirements, including the level of medical support and the type of discharge from the sending facility, also play a pivotal role in defining the cost structure of the medical transport needed.

Moreover, the journey’s start and end points significantly influence the cost, with international transports that require border crossing or longer distances naturally incurring higher expenses.

Time sensitivity can also add to the cost; urgent or last-minute requests often come with a premium, reflecting the additional resources needed to accommodate such expedited services.

Types of long-distance medical transport vehicles

When it comes to long-distance medical transport, there are several options depending on the medical condition of the patient, the distance to be traveled, and specific medical needs.

Here are some of the main types of long-distance medical transport available:

1. Air Ambulance

An air ambulance is an aircraft specially equipped to quickly transport sick or injured patients over long distances, varying terrain, in a medically controlled environment and are outfitted with specialized medical equipment, similar to an ICU.

More info on air ambulances here .

This option is ideal for emergency situations where time is critical, such as severe trauma, acute medical emergencies, or when a patient must quickly reach a facility that offers specialized care that is unavailable locally.

The cost for these services can be great, and it’s not always clear if a standard health insurance plan will cover it. Specialized travel insurance or travel assistance memberships can help arrange an air ambulance transport and either cover or supplement the cost.

EA+ is the Best and Highly Recommended! When we signed up in 2019, we had no idea the importance of that decision.

This December, while finally taking our dream vacation to Fiji, my husband experienced a medical crisis. I immediately called EA+ and I cannot state emphatically enough how grateful I am for the immediate help I received.

Everyone I dealt with was exceptionally proficient in their capacity every step of the way. This was invaluable to me, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this took so much pressure and stress off my shoulders. We had to be medically evacuated to New Zealand for adequate care and EA+ found an apartment for me that was perfectly located near the hospital and airport.

I am grateful to the team that came in like the cavalry. All was seamless. EA+ is the best and highly recommended! – Lance N., Louisiana

  • What is an Air Ambulance?
  • The Top 5 Reasons You Might Require an Air Ambulance

2. Commercial airline with nurse escort

Some commercial airlines are equipped with a section of the airplane to accommodate medical transportation depending on the patient’s stable medical condition and ability to travel at high altitude

Commercial airline stretcher services are specialized wheelchair services suitable for patients who are not in critical condition but need to travel lying down or with more space and are stable enough to handle the rigors of a commercial flight.

This is often used for non-emergency medical repatriations or when transferring patients over international distances.

A nurse escort (also called a medical escort) involves a health professional accompanying a patient on a commercial flight, providing necessary medical support in-flight. The patient can travel seated and is generally stable but may need assistance with medications, mobility, or monitoring.

If you are going to use a commercial airline, notify the airline as early as possible, ideally at booking or at least 48 hours before departure. Airlines often require a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) filled out by your doctor and may need medical clearance for certain conditions.

If you need supplemental oxygen, check for approved Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) and necessary documentation. Carry all essential medication and supplies in your carry-on luggage, along with prescriptions.

Arrive early at the airport for extra check-in and security time. Inform check-in staff of your needs for assistance with boarding, deplaning, and navigating the airport. During security screening, notify staff of any medical devices.

Once onboard, inform flight attendants of your needs; they can assist and use medical kits if necessary.

Upon arrival, airline staff can help with disembarking and navigating the airport, and some airports have medical facilities for immediate assistance. Coordinating with the airline and preparing in advance ensures your medical needs are met throughout your journey.

3. Non-emergency medical transport (NEMT)

NEMT services provide transportation for patients who do not require immediate medical care but need assistance getting to and from medical facilities for appointments or treatments.

Vehicles used range from specially equipped vans to ambulances, depending on the patient’s needs.

This service is ideal for individuals with mobility issues, those who require regular treatments like chemotherapy or dialysis, or those who need post-operative transport for follow-up visits.

4. Long-distance ground ambulance

This service uses ambulances equipped to handle longer journeys, providing necessary medical care en route.

Long-distance ground ambulances can be used for patients who need continuous medical supervision, such as those with unstable vital signs, requiring intravenous therapy, or on ventilators, and the destination is accessible by road.

5. Train ambulance services

In some regions, train carriages are fitted with medical facilities to transport patients over long distances. Train ambulances are railway carriages converted into mobile medical units to transport patients over long distances.

This option provides a stable and smooth environment, suitable for patients who need a comfortable setting, are in a stable condition, and where the rail network can efficiently connect the origin and destination cities.

6. Mobile intensive care units (ICUs)

These are advanced ambulances equipped like a hospital ICU to provide high-level medical care. They are staffed with specialized medical personnel and used to transport critically ill patients who need intensive care during transport but are traveling to a destination reachable by road.

This is chosen in situations where air transport is not necessary or practical but the patient requires continuous, intensive medical monitoring and treatment.

Each of these options offers different levels of care and comfort, and the choice depends on the specific health requirements of the patient, the urgency of travel, and the budget available. It’s important for consumers to consult with healthcare professionals to choose the most appropriate type of medical transport for their specific situation.

In many cases when you need long-distance medical transport, you won’t have time to interview dozens of providers. This is because the transportation will often be tied to an urgent medical situation. The process itself may take coordinating with multiple parties, sending paperwork and clearances, and arranging transportation before and after the medical transport. It can become complex and even overwhelming.

Additionally, the process is not quite the same as ordering a taxi. It’s expensive, and you’ll want to make sure that cost is covered somehow.

This is where Emergency Assistance Plus (EA+) can be a game-changer. EA+ is a travel assistance membership that offers a network of professionals equipped to arrange medical transport for you and your loved ones during medical emergencies when traveling.

Can travel insurance cover people with cancer?

Who needs a pre-existing medical condition waiver, how to choose among travel insurance companies, companies that offer travel insurance with cancer coverage, other tips for getting insurance for your trip, travel insurance for cancer patients recapped.

Most plans with pre-existing medical condition coverage require purchase within 20 days of an initial trip deposit.

Generally, non-emergency care and/or expected complications as a result of your diagnosis won’t be covered.

Different companies sell plans with different coverage limits. Read the fine print.

Finding the best travel insurance for your trip can be tricky, even more so if you’re planning a trip and have a pre-existing medical condition like cancer, as some plans don’t cover issues that might arise as a result of this diagnosis (or may limit coverage to specific situations).

Fortunately, you can still enjoy the peace of mind that travel insurance offers, even if you have a medical condition.

Here’s what to know about travel insurance for cancer patients, including what it covers, how it works and which insurance companies have suitable plans.

» Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

Travel insurance protects against financial losses and other risks from unexpected events that occur when traveling. Policies cover the expenses and inconveniences incurred from delayed flights, canceled reservations, lost or delayed luggage, injuries and even illness.

That said, not every illness is covered, as not every policy offers protection for those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Within the umbrella of coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, cancer patients are wise to scout out policies that cover cancer-related treatment during a trip. In the off chance that you need unexpected care because of your condition — or perhaps you need to cancel your trip or cut it short due to medical reasons — you want to be able to be reimbursed for all the payments you've made so far.

Most of the time, non-emergency care and/or expected complications that are a result of your diagnosis won’t be covered.

Without coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, companies will not likely reimburse you for emergency expenses, medical care, last-minute flights home or any other trip interruptions/cancellations due to your medical status.

Understanding how this sort of coverage works is important because not every traveler qualifies for a pre-existing medical condition waiver when it comes to obtaining travel insurance with cancer.

Requirements vary from one insurance company to another, so always make sure to read the fine print and details of your particular policy before purchasing.

But in general, you’ll likely need to meet at least one of these conditions:

You’ve had to seek medical care and/or received a diagnosis or treatment within a certain number of days before purchasing your policy.

You’re taking doctor-prescribed medication.

You’ve exhibited symptoms.

As far as the policy itself is concerned, a few more limitations may apply to qualify for the waiver, such as:

Your policy must cover the full purchase cost of your trip.

You bought your policy within a certain number of days of making your first paid booking or reservation (the exact number varies from company to company).

You were OK to travel, medically speaking, when you purchased the policy.

When it comes time to purchase a travel insurance plan, start by comparing options from multiple companies. If in doubt, reach out to the company’s customer service team for clarification. Each company is different and has different requirements and limitations.

» JUMP to learn more about companies to consider

Once you've generated a quote, peruse individual plans from each company, focusing primarily on the details of pre-existing condition coverage. Also consider other helpful protections like cancellation coverage, trip delay or interruption coverage, lost luggage insurance and more.

When comparing policies, pay attention to coverage amounts to make sure what’s offered is enough to bring you peace of mind.

Make sure to start your search for travel insurance early, ideally within a few days of making your first booking, since pre-existing condition waivers often require early purchase — if you don’t buy a plan within a set amount of time (usually 14-20 days) after your initial trip booking, you may not qualify.

» Learn more : Travelex travel insurance: What to know

Before you start packing, here are some other tips for procuring travel insurance for those with cancer:

Check to see if you already have a credit card that offers trip insurance . While your pre-existing condition may not be covered via your card, you could potentially pair your card's existing coverage with a more basic/economy third-party plan that includes pre-existing conditions coverage.

Even if you don’t have the whole trip booked and paid for, make sure you purchase coverage in the amount of everything you’ve paid for so far within the purchasing window for pre-existing coverage. If you make more reservations later, you’ll have to update your policy coverage amount at that time, usually within a set amount of days. Read your policy info for time limits.

Choose the best policy for you based on not just the policy cost, but also what you need and what is covered.

If you have cancer, travel insurance can seem complicated. Indeed, it’s important to make sure the coverage you select will take care of you should you need it. As long as you understand the requirements of selecting a plan and what it does and doesn’t cover, you can still find a policy that works for you.

Cruise travel insurance: What it covers and why you need it

What does cruise travel insurance cover? And does it pay to buy cruise travel insurance?

The answer is not always clear-cut, as we'll discuss in this guide. But consider this: It's not always smooth seas when it comes to cruising. Even the best-laid plans for a cruise vacation can sometimes be thrown off course by an unexpected event.

You might need to cancel a cruise in advance due to the sudden onset of an illness, such as COVID-19 or the flu. Or, maybe you fall ill during the cruise and need emergency medical attention. Maybe your flight to your ship gets canceled, and you miss the vessel's departure. Or your ship is late arriving in port at the end of a voyage, and you miss your flight home.

In all of these situations, you might benefit from having cruise travel insurance — keyword "might."

Cruise insurance policies vary widely, and not every policy covers every type of mishap. That's why it always pays to read the fine print in a travel insurance policy before you purchase it to know what you're getting in advance.

It's also why you should read this introduction to everything you need to know about cruise insurance. It has many details, but the next time something unexpected happens on your cruise vacation, you'll be glad to be educated and covered by a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

What does travel insurance cover when you cruise?

The typical cruise insurance policy covers a wide range of circumstances that can go wrong in conjunction with a vacation at sea — both before and during the sailing.

For starters, policies often will reimburse you for the cost of canceling a cruise due to a last-minute crisis. They will also often cover costs related to an interruption of a cruise (maybe your ship breaks down, requiring you to fly home mid-voyage ). These two elements are known as trip-cancellation and trip-interruption insurance, and they are bundled into a typical travel insurance policy.

Some policies will also cover out-of-pocket costs related to a flight delay or cancellation that results in you missing your cruise departure (for instance, the cost of catching up to the ship at its next port). Expenses related to baggage delays and loss are often covered as well.

But perhaps most importantly, many travel insurance policies will cover medical expenses you incur while on a cruise. Some will even cover the cost of evacuating from a foreign destination if you are in the midst of a medical crisis.

Travel insurance giant Allianz Global Assistance reports that 53% of all cruise-related "billing reasons" for claims are because of illness for the insured person, while 14% are for an injury. Another 8% are for the illness of a family member, 4% for the death of a family member and 4% for the illness of a traveling companion, among other reasons.

Those percentages include illness and accidents that happen to cruisers just before a trip, making travel impossible. But, in many cases, such claims result from illness and injuries that occur during voyages.

"People often take risks during vacation that they might not take back home, whether riding a jet ski, zipping around on a motorized scooter in a city they don't know well or hiking unfamiliar terrain," James Page, senior vice president and chief administration officer of AIG Travel, told TPG .

Some policies also cover the financial default of a travel provider. In such cases, if your cruise line goes out of business before you sail, you could get all — or at least some — of your money back.

Cruise travel insurance policies don't cover everything. For instance, standard travel insurers generally will not reimburse you for the cost of a cruise you cancel due to worries about an outbreak of an illness. That's true even if a U.S. government agency such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issues a recommendation that you don't cruise due to an illness outbreak, as it did during the COVID-19 pandemic .

If you want the ultimate flexibility to cancel for such a reason or any other, you'll want to look into a more expensive cancel for any reason travel insurance upgrade.

Related: Avoiding outbreaks isn't covered by most travel insurance policies

Where to find a cruise travel insurance policy

You can buy a travel insurance policy directly from your cruise line when booking your trip or through your travel agent (if you're using one, which often is a good idea when booking a cruise). You also can go directly to a third-party travel insurance provider or a travel-insurance aggregator site, such as InsureMyTrip or TravelInsurance . Your credit card might even give you some travel protections.

Here's what you need to know about each type of cruise travel insurance.

Third-party insurance companies

Third-party insurance companies that specialize in writing travel insurance include AIG Travel, Allianz Travel Insurance, Travelex Insurance and American Express Travel Insurance.

One reason to use a travel agent or a travel aggregator: They can help you find a policy that offers added coverage specific to cruising.

Related: The Points Guy's guide to the best travel insurance companies

"Many plans now offer benefits that will specifically appeal to cruise travelers, such as missed connection, missed port-of-call and cruise disablement coverage," Stan Sandberg, cofounder of TravelInsurance.com, said.

Missed connection coverage reimburses cruisers for a set dollar amount if they need to rebook travel to catch up with their cruise at the next port. Missed port-of-call coverage pays a benefit if the cruise ship misses a scheduled port of call due to weather, a natural disaster or a mechanical breakdown.

Cruise disablement coverage pays a benefit if the traveler is confined on a ship for more than five hours without power, food, water or restrooms.

As noted, policies vary widely. It's a good idea to compare plans and make sure the one you buy has the elements that are most important to you. One size doesn't fit all.

Credit cards with travel benefits

Some premium credit cards offer valuable travel protections comparable to what you might get from a standard travel insurance plan. For example, the travel insurance provided when you pay for travel with select cards can reimburse you for expenses if your baggage is damaged, you're stranded overnight due to a flight delay or cancellation, or you have to return home to handle a family medical emergency.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card, for example, offers trip delay reimbursement, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, emergency medical coverage and even medical evacuation coverage , among other benefits. And yes, cruise lines are considered common carriers just like airlines.

If you're planning to rely on a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or The Platinum Card® from American Express * (among others) for travel insurance, just be sure to recheck your card's benefits and limits carefully against regular travel insurance. You must pay for at least part — and sometimes all — of the trip with that credit card to take advantage of its protections.

*Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

Find out if your credit card protection includes travel accident insurance or covers preexisting medical conditions, and figure out when it will pay you back. Other questions to ask: What are the coverage limits? Will you have to pay for a foreign hospital bill upfront and then seek reimbursement later?

Cruise lines

Cruise lines often ask consumers booking a cruise to buy the line's own protection at the time of purchase. If specifics about the coverage are lacking, always ask the line for details in advance, review coverage perks and limits; then, compare those to one or two independent travel insurance policies or your credit card's insurance benefits.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Cruise line travel insurance policies sometimes have quirks. Many cruise companies will only offer a travel voucher or credit for future use in the event of a covered cancellation, not an outright refund.

Also, financial default may not be a covered event in a cruise line-sold policy, but it's typically covered with plans from third-party travel insurance companies.

Cruise line policies also can be more restrictive.

"Cruise line insurance seems to have become better and has more widespread coverage than in the past, but it typically won't cover air or pre- and post-travel [arrangements] unless those elements are purchased through [the line]," said Debra Kerper, a Cruise Planners travel adviser from Carrollton, Texas, who books travel and sells private insurance. "This is when private insurance coverage becomes so very important."

How much does cruise insurance cost?

Expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 8% of your total prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses for a travel insurance policy. That's a wide range, we know, but it reflects the wide range of products out there.

You'll also find some basic plans that cost even less than 4% of your trip expenses, while some super-premium plans that cover just about any conceivable issue can cost as much as 12% of your trip expenses.

Related: What's included in your cruise fare?

All reputable insurance companies will offer a "free-look period" during which you can receive a 100% refund on your premium. This allows you to review the policy you've selected and return it for any reason within the period allotted — usually for a small administration fee of less than $10.

Under normal circumstances, you don't need to purchase a so-called "cancel for any reason" add-on to your cruise travel insurance policy unless you really need the flexibility. The upgrades are significantly more expensive.

You can receive a quote and purchase a policy online in minutes with any credit card. Although you may think travel insurance should code as "travel" when paid on a credit card and thus be eligible for bonus points on certain cards, that isn't always the case. Your points earnings will depend on the individual underwriter's merchant code. When in doubt, expect the purchase to fall under the insurance category for earnings.

Should I buy travel insurance for a cruise?

Whether you buy travel insurance is a personal decision that will depend on many factors. Would you be willing to absorb the loss of canceling a cruise on short notice due to an illness or accident? Could you afford an evacuation flight from a far-off port if you suddenly became seriously ill? Only you can answer those sorts of questions.

Here are some things to consider as you make that decision.

You might not be covered by regular medical insurance while cruising

If you're a U.S. citizen traveling internationally (which will be the case for most cruises), you may find that most private medical insurance plans in the U.S. won't cover you.

Additionally, Original Medicare only covers people traveling outside U.S. borders in limited circumstances.

While certain Medicare Supplement Plans do have some foreign emergency medical benefits, not all do. Be sure to talk to your Medical Supplemental Plan provider to see if you're covered, what's covered, what the limits are and how the bill is paid.

Also note that, in some countries (particularly those in Central and South America), travelers may not be discharged from a hospital until their bill is paid in full.

Plus, if you have a medical incident overseas, you could find yourself stuck in a shared hospital room without air conditioning or a private bathroom. The level of care may not be what you expect.

"For people traveling internationally, it's crucial to know beforehand where to go for any treatment … and how they're going to pay for that treatment," Page said.

Getting evacuated for a medical condition is expensive

Most airlines won't accept seriously ill passengers, those carrying bulky medical equipment or those requiring a full medical team.

Even a low-cost weekend getaway on a cruise to the Bahamas out of Miami can turn costly if you suffer a serious accident or illness requiring medical treatment or an emergency medical evacuation.

Related: Do cruise ships have doctors, nurses, medical centers or hospitals?

Being flown back to the U.S. from a far-flung overseas location in a private, medically equipped aircraft, with a professional medical team on board, can run between $70,000 and $180,000, according to Mike Hallman, president and CEO of Medjet, a medical transport membership company.

"Domestic transports, which we cover as well, can cost upwards of $30,000," Hallman said.

Without proof of medical evacuation coverage, foreign providers will also want that money upfront. Hallman said that regular travel insurance will typically get you to an acceptable overseas hospital and even to a higher-level care facility if "medically necessary." Alternatively, medical evacuation coverage means you can fly home to your own hospital, doctors and family — without claim forms, cost caps on transports or surprise bills.

The tandem approach — buying both travel insurance and a separate medevac transport membership — is a good option, Hallman said.

"We always recommend travel insurance, as it covers trip interruption, which is important, as well as medical coverage for the hospital and treatment costs," he said. "We pick up where they leave off."

You can't predict the weather

Cruising is a great way to explore multiple destinations in one trip. But it's good to remember that unexpected delays, interruptions or cancellations due to weather can happen during cruises, particularly during hurricane seasons in places such as the Caribbean and Asia (where hurricanes are called typhoons).

During a typical hurricane season (June 1 to Nov. 30), Allianz pays about 6,000 claims from customers whose travel plans in the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and southeastern U.S. are affected by the storms, according to a spokesperson for Allianz Global Assistance USA.

If you're hoping to insure against a storm-related disaster, it's good to buy travel insurance as early as possible. Once a storm or hurricane is named, it's too late to buy travel insurance to cover it.

Of course, cruise lines will move ships away from a weather threat. When the port lineup is adjusted or the cruise shortened, the company will offer the guest an onboard credit, onboard gift or future cruise credit rather than any refund. It depends on the circumstances of that specific voyage. You won't be able to make a claim on your cruise travel insurance policy just for a minor itinerary change .

Related: Everything you need to know about cruising during hurricane season

Costs can mount quickly when things go wrong

Even if the cruise line does provide a full or partial refund or cruise credit for an itinerary change or some other interruption, travelers could have to swallow the cost of other travel elements not purchased through the line. That could include nonrefundable flights , prepaid resort or hotel nights, nonrefundable tour fees and more.

Travel insurance can cover those, plus help with flight delays or cancellations, baggage loss or theft.

If a winter storm causes you to miss your flight to where the ship is boarding , "travel insurance could help you get to the next port to join the cruise, so you don't miss your entire trip," Page said.

In fact, 13% of "billing reasons" for claims to Allianz are for common carrier delays (such as a flight delay), while weather and natural disaster-related claims account for about 3%.

The government probably won't bail you out

While cruise ships have medical facilities, they're usually not equipped to treat serious illnesses. If you experience a serious medical problem on a vessel, you may have to get off the ship in a foreign port to seek treatment at a hospital. In such a case, if you don't have medical evacuation insurance, you may then find yourself stranded in that port awaiting a medical evacuation.

Don't expect Uncle Sam to step in and help foot the bill.

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs clearly states the importance of buying travel insurance.

"The U.S. government does not provide medical insurance for U.S. citizens overseas," the bureau says on the website. "We do not pay medical bills. You should purchase insurance before you travel."

You may need more assistance than you think

If you're injured or become severely ill during a cruise, especially in a foreign country, it may be difficult to access help without the assistance of trained professionals that comes with many insurance plans.

Many travel insurance companies provide around-the-clock assistance with locating overseas clinics and pharmacies, getting to a doctor or hospital, refilling lost or depleted prescriptions, assisting with up-front payments to hospitals, and arranging flight changes so you can get home.

Travel insurance companies also can arrange for an air ambulance, a nurse escort, oxygen and a lie-flat seat on a flight home if your medical condition warrants it.

You want to be careful if you have preexisting conditions

When you cruise, it's important to be fully covered, which means having comprehensive medical coverage that includes any preexisting conditions. Otherwise, if you head into a doctor's office overseas, have any tests completed, or visit an urgent care center or emergency room, you might not be covered.

Here, timing is extremely important. Cruisers seeking coverage of preexisting conditions, as well as cancel for any reason insurance, generally must book within seven to 21 days of the first payment they make for a trip. The timing varies by insurer.

Bottom line

Cruise insurance isn't for every traveler — or even for every sailing. It's not inexpensive. However, it can bring a lot of peace of mind if you're about to head out to sea. Do your homework, compare plans and always assess the risks.

Which Medicare plans cover emergency medical care overseas?

May 18, 2024 at 5:47 p.m.

by Toni King

I met with you in 2023 for a Toni Says personalized Medicare consultation. I have a quick question regarding travel outside the United States because I'm planning a trip to Italy in September. Which Medicare plans cover emergency medical costs while traveling overseas?

I received Medicare advice from my travel agent that has me very confused. I was informed that some Medicare plans, such as Plan F, give foreign travel medical coverage, but others, including Plan G, which I am enrolled in, do not. Is this true?

— Laura from Dallas

Hello Laura,

The advice that you were given is not accurate.

Medicare does not cover emergency medical care during foreign travel. It is an added benefit that a Medicare supplement plan (Medigap) covers.

Medicare supplement plans F and G (as well as C, D, M and N) will all cover the same limited amount of emergency foreign travel. These plans pay for emergency care during the first 60 days of a trip outside of the United States. There is a $250 deductible, and the Medicare supplement plan "only" pays 80%, up to a lifetime maximum benefit of $50,000. You pay 20% and any amounts over the $50,000 lifetime maximum.

Who knows what an air ambulance anywhere overseas will cost? Laura, discuss with your travel agent or explore online for true travelers' insurance that will take care of any medical needs while traveling in countries worldwide.

But beware, because not all travel insurance plans include medical coverage. It's important to read the plan's conditions and restrictions before purchasing the travel insurance policy.

Another important note: Original Medicare and Medicare Part D plans take care of medical and prescription drug expenses in the United States only. So be sure you bring enough of your prescription medication while you are overseas, or you will have to pay out-of-pocket.

There are, however, new Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans that pay for medical expenses overseas. Be sure that you are covered with that specific plan in case you have a medical event with foreign travel overseas. Call the Medicare Advantage plan to verify how to receive emergency medical benefits when out of the United States, because coverage and rules vary depending on which plan is selected.

Readers, do not forget there is a Medicare rule that one cannot be enrolled in original Medicare with a supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.

Laura, the travel agent you were speaking with is also unaware that plan F is no longer available for those enrolling in Medicare Part A as of Jan. 1, 2020. (Chapter 3 of the "Medicare Survival Guide" discusses the rules of enrolling in a Medicare supplement plan.) Anyone enrolled in a Medicare supplement Plan F who wants to change to a Plan G or N, which has lower premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs, will have to answer medical underwriting questions to qualify for that specific plan.

The differences between Medicare supplement Plan G and Plan N are:

— Plan G offers lower premiums and the same Medicare benefits as Plan F except the Medicare Part B deductible is not covered and will be paid for by the enrolled Medicare beneficiary. The Part B deductible for 2024 is $240, which is Plan G's out-of-pocket.

— Plan N generally has a lower premium than Plan G with higher out-of-pocket costs. There is a $20 copay for a doctor's visit and a $50 copay for the emergency room. The Part B deductible is also not covered, and the Part B "excess charges" are not paid for by the insurance company (which Plan G covers).

Laura, this is not the first time someone has contacted the Toni Says Medicare team because of inaccurate Medicare information. Readers, always check your coverage before travelling overseas.

Visit the  Embassy of the Czech Republic’s   website for the most current visa information.

Traveling Through Europe : If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Passports  should be valid for at least  six months beyond the arrival date into Schengen,  to avoid difficulties entering and traveling within the Schengen zone. For additional details about travel into and within Schengen countries, please see our  U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
  • You will need s ufficient proof of funds  and a  return plane ticket .
  • The Czech Republic (official short name: Czechia) is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that U.S. citizens may enter the Czech Republic for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa.
  • You may enter the Czech Republic for up to  90 days  for tourist, business, study, and most other purposes (except work) without a visa. This is counted along with presence in all Schengen countries for up to 90 days out of any 180-day period.
  • You will need a  visa for stays over 90 days  or to  work for any period of time  in the Czech Republic. When a visa is required, submit your application to the nearest Czech diplomatic mission  at least  3-4 months in advance of traveling  to the Czech Republic. Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime:  The Czech Republic generally has little crime. However, you should still take precautions against becoming a victim of crime.

  • crowded areas and outdoor cafes.
  • Victims of sexual assault  report being drugged with rohypnol and other  “date rape”-type drugs .
  • Use caution when  accepting open drinks at bars or clubs,  and do not leave drinks unattended.
  • Pedestrian  traffic violations, such as jaywalking, may be enforced in Prague’s city center. Discretionary  fines  up to 2000 Czech crowns (about $100) may be applied. Refusal to pay may lead to a court procedure and an even higher fine. Streetcars have the right of way over pedestrians at crosswalks.
  • Casinos and gaming establishments are government-regulated, but some have been affiliated with, or attracted the interest of, organized crime.
  • Conduct  currency exchanges  at reputable banks or legitimate money kiosks. Pay close attention to the exact rate offered for the amount you wish to exchange, as rates may vary widely for smaller versus larger amounts and between different exchange offices. An offer to exchange currency by an unknown person on the street is most likely a  scam .
  • ATMs  are widely available throughout major cities. Criminal organizations have used electronic “skimming” to steal card information and PIN numbers at some ATMs. Use ATMs at secure, monitored locations (commercial banks, large hotels, and the airport).
  • Auto thefts  and  break-ins  are common in the Czech Republic, especially in major cities. Use parking garages and anti-theft devices. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight inside vehicles, as this significantly increases the possibility of theft.
  • Overcharging scams:  Verify charges paid with credit card are correct before signing for purchases, keep all receipts, and check your credit card accounts online to ensure correct billing.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (420) 257-022-000. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care

  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Local resources available to victims of crime can be found at: Bilý Kruh Bezpečí (White Circle of Safety).

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules regarding best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas and activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Ensure the security of your passport and other valuables to prevent incidents of pickpocketing or theft.
  • Always carry your passport. Czech Police, customs, or immigration officials can request to see your passport at any time. You may be fined if you fail to produce your passport.
  • Keep a  copy of your passport  bio data page (and pages with valid visas) in a safe place, separate from the passport itself.
  • Czech  customs  authorities enforce  strict regulations  concerning temporary import or export of items such as firearms, antiquities, medications, business equipment, etc. Contact the  Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C. , for further customs guidance. The U.S. Embassy cannot help clear goods through Czech customs or advise on what items can or cannot be imported to the Czech Republic.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

  • The sale, possession, or use of  illicit drugs  is against the law in the Czech Republic.
  • The Czech Republic has a strictly enforced, zero-tolerance policy for  drinking and driving .
  • Local police can require you to produce identification to establish your identity upon request and submit you to further questioning.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. If you bring them back to the United States you could be subject to fines and may have to relinquish them prior to entering the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Czech Republic. Outside of Prague, particularly in small towns, such relations or events are less accepted. LGBTI travelers should use  discretion  when traveling in these areas. See   our  LGBTI travel information   page and section six of the  Department of State’s Human Rights Report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance : While in the Czech Republic, individuals may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what you find in the United States. The law prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in employment, education, access to health care, and the provision of other state services. The government generally enforces these provisions.

  • Many buses and streetcars - especially in Prague - are configured for special needs access.
  • 72 percent of Prague’s metro stations are accessible to persons with disabilities, and work to expand barrier-free access is ongoing.
  • Taxi services for persons with limited mobility exist. There are several companies offering such services in Prague, and some service areas outside Prague.
  • Much of the center of Prague, most interesting to tourists, was built centuries ago with narrow cobblestone streets that may make accessibility difficult or impossible.
  • Accessibility outside of Prague is generally less available.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:

  • Be aware of  “date-rape” drugs .
  • Be cautious in bars and clubs where alcohol is served. Leaving your  drink unattended  or accepting a drink from a stranger can lead to serious consequences.

See our travel tips for Women Traveler s .

For emergency services in Czech Republic, dial 112.

Prague has  adequate  Western-style medical clinics with English-speaking doctors and dentists, but its system is organized differently than in the United States. Though central emergency rooms exist in most hospitals, patients are often sent to a specialty clinic to treat specific medical conditions. Family practices like those in the United States are mostly in larger cities.

  • All major hospitals accept  credit cards  or cash as a method of payment. Private specialists usually expect  cash , though some private facilities accept credit cards.

In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. Ambulance  services are on par with those in the United States. Response time is usually less than 15 minutes. Ambulance companies generally expect  payment  at the time of service.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Generally, patients who have overseas insurance coverage should expect to pay the bill at the time services are rendered and then seek reimbursement from their insurance company. Contact your health insurance company directly to find out if your policy includes overseas coverage. Many care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Czech Ministry of Health to ensure the medication is legal in the Czech Republic.

Vaccinations: Be up to date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals on its website . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Adequate health facilities are available throughout the country but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment “up front” prior to service or admission, either in cash or by credit card.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for for information on Medical Tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to the Czech Republic.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in the Czech Republic.
  • Although the Czech Republic has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in the Czech Republic, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available, and professionals are accredited and qualified.

Pharmaceuticals

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.
  • Additionally, see the Czech Embassy’s restricted medication section on its website before traveling with medication.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to the Czech Republic to have a child through the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • The Czech Republic neither legalizes, regulates, nor prohibits couples to apply and perform surrogacy treatments. According to current legislation, assisted reproduction therapy permits heterosexual couples to apply but at present restricts single women or homosexual couples to apply for assisted reproduction.
  • If you decide to pursue parenthood in the Czech Republic via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

General Health Language

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Tick-borne encephalitis  and  Lyme  disease. If you plan to  camp or hike  in long grass or woodlands from March to October, you run the risk of both  tick-borne encephalitis  and  Lyme  disease. While there is a vaccine for encephalitis, no vaccine exists for Lyme disease. Use insect repellent and proper clothing as extra protection.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in the Czech Republic.
  • U.S.  living wills  stipulating no exceptional interventions to prolong life  are not honored  in the Czech Republic due to laws against euthanasia.

Air Quality

  • Air pollution is a significant problem in several major cities in the Czech Republic Consider the impact seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary.
  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • We strongly recommend that you  familiarize yourself  with the traffic laws of the Czech Republic to avoid fines, detention, or potential imprisonment.
  • On two-lane roads and in small towns, drivers will encounter uneven surfaces, roads in poor condition, irregular lane markings, and unclear sign placements.
  • Pay special attention when  driving on cobblestones  and among  streetcars  in historic city centers, especially in wet or icy conditions.

Traffic Laws:

  • To drive in the Czech Republic, visitors must have an  International Driving Permit (IDP),  available from AAA in the United States, to accompany a U.S. driver’s license. Failure to have an IDP with a valid license may result in an additional fine if stopped for a traffic offense, or  denial of an insurance   claim  after an accident.
  • All  private cars , including those of foreign visitors, must carry  additional safety gear,  including reflective jackets, warning triangles, and a first aid kit. These can be purchased at any gas station or large supermarket.
  • In the case of a traffic accident or breakdown on the highway, make sure that you use the warning triangle, placing it at least 100 meters before the car on a highway and 50 meters on other roads. For all accidents, call the Police at 158, or Emergency Services at 112. For general roadside assistance call Road Traffic Assistance (UAMK) at  phone number 1240 . UAMK operates 24 hours a day  and can be called from highway telephones, located every two kilometers alongside the road.
  • Czech law requires all passengers and occupants of private vehicles to use seatbelts.
  • There is a  zero-tolerance  policy for  driving under the influence of alcohol . Police can use breathalyzers on drivers stopped for any reason. Driving with any detected alcohol in the body, however slight, is  illegal  and usually leads to immediate fines and possible criminal proceedings.
  • Czech law requires the use of  headlights  at all times.
  • A  toll sticker  is required for all cars to drive legally on major  highways . For more information, visit  the official Czech highway toll website.
  • In the Czech Republic , winter tires are obligatory from November 1st to March 31st, if there are wintery weather conditions, or if such conditions are to be expected during your drive.
  • Using hand-held  cell phones  while driving is  prohibited .
  • Streetcars always have the right of way over other vehicles and pedestrians, including at crosswalks.

Public Transportation: Public transportation in the Czech Republic is generally very good. There are extensive intercity train and bus networks, and larger cities have high-quality urban mass transit systems. Information on tickets and pricing within Prague can be found   here .

  • Passengers on public transportation must  buy a ticket prior to boarding and validate it upon boarding  to avoid being fined. Tickets must be  validated  by inserting it into a validator found inside trams and buses and in the entry halls of Metro stations.
  • In Prague, tickets can be purchased at newspaper stands, post offices, and from vending machines at all metro stations and at major tram stops. Tickets can also be purchased by text message on a mobile phone on a Czech network, but the traveler must have received the reply message with the ticket before entering a tram, bus, or metro station. Most newer trams also allow passengers to purchase tickets onboard.
  • Travelers may encounter  plain-clothes ticket inspectors  wearing small metal badges with “Přepravní Kontrola” on them at any time.  Fines  for failure to have a validated ticket range from 50 to 1500 CZK. In Prague, the usual fine is 800 CZK if paid on the spot or within 15 days. Inspectors should provide a receipt for on-the-spot payments.
  • Trams always have the right of way over pedestrians, including at crosswalks.
  • Legitimate taxis  are clearly marked, and the Embassy strongly recommends calling for a taxi rather than hailing one on the street. If calling is not possible, visitors should get taxis at clearly marked  “Fair Place” stands . The potential for  substantial overcharging  in taxis exists, particularly in tourist areas. Agree on a  price  in advance or ensure the driver is using the  meter . Ridesharing and mobile taxi apps, such as Uber and Liftago, are prevalent in Prague and in most major cities.

Patients being hit with costly ambulances and emergency medical bills. This must stop.

An ambulance responds to the scene of an emergency.

  • The high cost of ambulances is a major barrier to healthcare for many Americans.
  • The No Surprises Act, which went into effect in 2022, does not protect patients from surprise bills for ground ambulances.
  • A federal-level modification of the No Surprises Act to include ground ambulances would result in a more equitable healthcare system.

Ryan Elaoud is a third-year student at the Ohio State University, majoring in biomedical science.

In the current U.S. healthcare landscape, there are glaring obstacles that impede many Americans in obtaining appropriate healthcare.

One such obstacle may even result in the difference between life or death: the exorbitant cost of ambulances and emergency medical services. As critical life-saving services become increasingly financially out of reach for many, it's time to scrutinize the economic barriers preventing swift and lifesaving access to healthcare for all.

Currently, escalating costs of ambulance services create an insurmountable barrier, deterring many individuals from seeking timely medical assistance.

Healthcare system has dangerous flaws

In 2017, one in four American families had to turn down medical care that they needed purely because of cost. This figure is exacerbated among older millennials (ages 34-42) with 32% turning away from medical care because they couldn’t afford it in the past year.

However, this issue extends beyond mere financial burden; it is a systemic flaw that hampers the very essence of accessible and equitable healthcare. The financial barrier to ambulances affects the vulnerable—the poor—the hardest, resulting in adverse health outcomes and an ethically strained healthcare system.

In 2022, 12.2% of Americans did not have health insurance; in that same year, the average charge for an ambulance before health insurance coverage and discounts was $1,277 — a debilitating charge for many people of lower socioeconomic status. This cost barrier to ambulance services exacerbates health disparities, perpetuates inequality, and jeopardizes public health by impeding swift critical care delivery.

Ambulance companies state that large costs of round-the-clock staffing, limited insurance reimbursements and expensive equipment are the predominant reasons for elevated consumer bills. Furthermore, some argue that high ambulance costs are justified by the complex, highly trained personnel providing care and the life-saving nature of emergency medical services.

While the high costs of said staffing and the complex technology involved may be understandable in certain cases, it is nonetheless crucial to recognize that these same large costs commonly result in insurmountable financial barriers to potentially life-saving care for many Americans.

What is the solution?

While the No Surprises Act, established on January 1, 2022, helped overcome many of the financial barriers to healthcare for vulnerable populations, it is not close to exhaustive, or even to what is required to create equitable healthcare for all.

The No Surprises Act aimed to prohibit healthcare services from billing patients with “surprise” charges for out-of-network fees. This meant that for various emergency services and for select non-emergency services from out-of-network providers, patients could not be billed more than their in-network rates.

However, No Surprises Act’s protections do not extend to ground ambulances, meaning that patients can still be hit with crippling surprise out-of-network fees for critical, life-saving care. A more expansive NSA that includes traditional ground ambulances would alleviate this problem.

Not only would it result in more transparent pricing and lower ambulance costs for patients on average, but it would also lessen the financial burden facing Americans for critical healthcare services. This solution has already been implemented in multiple states with legislation such as House Bill 388 , wherein protections like the No Surprises Act are extended to ground ambulances.

A federal-level modification of the No Surprises Act to include ground ambulances would result in a more equitable healthcare system, reduced financial disparities and improved overall public health.

Failure to address this issue will perpetuate a cycle of delayed or denied emergency care, with consequences echoing across American communities.

Now is the time for collective action

To produce change necessary for health equity for all Americans, we—as upstanding citizens—must advocate for policy changes, engage in community discussions and support initiatives that champion affordable and timely access to emergency medical services.

By calling on our local and federal lawmakers to amend the NSA, we can help to dismantle financial barriers preventing access to ambulances and ensure that every individual, regardless of financial standing, can seek emergency medical assistance without hesitation.

Our health and the well-being of all American communities depend on our actions.
