War painting from a Barcelona Documentary

Watch These Spain Documentaries During Confinement

Great documentaries on spain to prepare your next trip.

Now that everyone is in lockdown and people can’t travel, it’s a great time to… lay on the sofa and watch TV! I’m sure that’s no news, unfortunately, right?

Anyway let me give you some suggestions to do something different from watching Netflix episode after episode. What about dreaming about your next trip to Spain?

Today we’ve selected for you our favorite Spain documentaries, all easily accessible and super cheap from Amazon Prime. Enjoy!

These are our favorite documentaries about Spain:

The gaudi code.

Dive into the amazing math and geometry created by the architecture master Antoni Gaudi for the construction of the most amazing building ever: the Sagrada Familia Church .

Unlike this other 10-minute documentary shot in 2007, The Gaudi Code was released after the interior of the church was finished – what means the images are quite up to date.

Although take into account that it’s a building still under construction and scheduled to be completed by 2026 – to celebrate the 100 anniversary of Antoni Gaudi’s death. So any documentary about it gets dated as the 10 still missing tours get higher and higher…

Rick Steves Episodes on Spain

Rick Steves is the world’s travel guru. His guidebooks are a must-read for anyone planning to travel. And he has a wonderful TV series about travel in Europe. On 2004, season 3 took you to Madrid on their 1st episode, Toledo and Salamanca in their 2nd episode and Sevilla on their last show (13th episode).

Season 5 heads to Barcelona and Catalunya (episode 3), and Season 6 focusses on the South Spain with episode 4 about Granada, Cordoba and Costa del Sol , and episode 5 on more Andalucia (with added Gibraltar and Tangier), then episode 10 is about Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago , and finally episode 11 shows you around the Basque Country .

BTW, I also found he has a special about Southern Spain .

Highlights of Castile: Toledo and Salamanca

Spanish food documentaries

If you are a foodie, you won’t lack of options either. Start with episodes 6 and 7 of The Everyday Gourmet , on paella, tapas and sherry. Continue with episode 8 of chef Anthony Bourdains about food in the Basque Country, then French actor and foodie Gerard Depardieu’s tour of Europe that stops in Catalonia (episode 6) and the Basque Country (episode 3).

For some more excitement, try Bizarre Foods , that after a general episode 2 about Spain on their first season, takes you visiting Madrid on episode 5 of season 6 , and again on episode 8 of season 9 , then follows the Camino de Santiago on episode 5 of their last season.

Finally, for some good laughs, check out comedian  Zane Lamprey trip to discover the Barcelona spirits (episode 10, season 3).

Aerial Spain

Do you love documentaries that show you landscapes from a bird eye’s view? If you already have Prime, you’ll get free access to this series of 3 chapters flying over the Spanish coasts, inland and famous cities.

It’s too bad you can only access it if you have Prime, the good news is that they give you 30 days trial for free . So as long as you remember to cancel it some days earlier, you are good to go… and will have access to much more content!

Aerial Spain

The History of Spain: Land on a crossroad

For all of you, history lovers, this is the series you need. 24 half-hour episodes (that can be purchased independently) covering all the aspects of the Spanish history. Get to learn about the Prehistorical times, the Roman Empire (did you know Tarraco, now Tarragona near Barcelona , was once home to several Roman emperors?), the Middle Ages, Christopher Columbus trips, Jewish, Moor and Gipsy communities, the different dinasties that ruled the Kingdom… all the way to the industrial revolution, the Spanish Civil war and the come-back of democracy.

Barbarian Tribes Divide the Peninsula

Enough time to learn the language?

Learning Spanish

Being able to communicate, understanding and getting understood makes a whole difference when visiting a country. Locals will be nicer to you if they see you make the effort to communicate in the local tongue rather than expecting to be addressed in your own “foreign” language.

And while being fluent can take years, getting the basics is just a matter of spending some time on it. This 30-episode Spanish course will get you through the basics of grammar and give you key vocabulary that will be undoubtedly helpful when you are abroad visiting not just Spain but also most Central and South American countries (well, and Florida too now that I think about it…)

Best Spanish TV Shows on Amazon Prime

26 Best Spanish Series on Amazon Prime (2023)

Watching Spanish shows on Amazon Prime is a great way to practice vocabulary and listening skills. All the Amazon Spanish series on this list are available to stream free for Prime members.

Amazon Prime Video search by language is pretty terrible, so I’ve done the hard work for you. 😉

If you are an intermediate or advanced learner, I recommend watching these Amazon Prime Spanish series with Spanish subtitles when available as studies show it enhances language learning . I also jot down any interesting new vocabulary and add it to my Anki flashcards  later.

These Spanish TV shows on Amazon Prime are available in the US as of May 4, 2023. Many may also be available in other countries. Watch them while you can, because content disappears as licensing agreements expire.

Also don’t miss my list of Spanish-language movies on Amazon Prime .

How to get English subtitles: English subtitles are not available for some of these shows in Spanish on Amazon Prime, only Spanish. However, one of my intrepid readers has suggested a workaround to get English subtitles by watching using Google’s Chrome browser and turning on auto-translate of Spanish.

To do so, click the little Google translation icon with the letter G in Chrome’s address bar to start translation. The Spanish subtitles will appear briefly and then be converted to English.  The only downside is that occasionally they are not on screen long enough to read. Thanks, Jim, for this tip! 🙂

Newly single, Sebastian is thrust into the world of dating and into the arms of his misfit crew of friends who all seem to be just as unlucky in love as he is.

Infieles - #JuevesDeEstrenos Trailer

This Sex and the City -like dramedy follows the lives, friendships, and loves of five young women in Barcelona. The show’s theme is infidelity, but most importantly, it’s about being true to one’s own self.

January 6, 2019 at 3:46 pm

Thanks so much for this list! I’m learning as much Spanish as I can before I take a sabbatical from teaching elementary school this time next year to spend 4 months doing a Spanish immersion program. Tops on my list are both Livit and SIPuebla. Maybe I will do 2 months at each!

January 7, 2019 at 8:58 am

Hi Mary, so glad you’re finding it helpful! Learning as much as you can before you go is a great idea… you’ll get so much more out of your experience. Four months is a great amount of time, and I’m sure you will reach fluency. Both Livit and SI Puebla are excellent schools and their teaching philosophies are extremely similar. Would love to hear your reviews of the school(s) you attend when you get back!

You must see Vis a Vis and you may also like La Casa de Papel. Son geniales <3

Gracias, Andrea… So glad we’re getting more access to high-quality content from Spain here in the US!

January 27, 2019 at 11:22 am

Sadly none of these available on Prime UK…

January 27, 2019 at 5:57 pm

Oh no! It seems like the Amazon catalog differs even more than the Netflix one by country. 🙁

' src=

January 31, 2019 at 5:02 pm

Just to let any Uk user know, you can watch vis a vis (locked up) on all4 demand!! Just search locked up on All4 🙂

January 31, 2019 at 9:12 pm

Thanks! This is great to know, as I noticed it’s not available on Netflix in the UK either.

February 1, 2019 at 5:13 am

Many thanks! Since my last post I managed to find some shows on Prime but their collection isn’t as great as Netflix’s. And I find it easier to search for non-English programmes on Netflix.

February 2, 2019 at 2:37 pm

Agree, search is terrible. Amazon is slowly starting to add original programs in Spanish, but has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix.

Desaparecida, se quien eres, presunto culpable

August 18, 2019 at 8:54 am

Mil gracias, Rosalia! It looks like first two of these series from Spain aren’t available on Amazon in the US yet, but Presunto Culpable is. I’ve added it to the list.

Update October 2019: Presunto Culpable has been removed from Amazon again… will add it back if it returns.

Wow, this is great! I am finally trying to learn Spanish! Thank you so very much!

January 13, 2020 at 6:43 pm

Glad it’s been helpful, Jeanne.

January 16, 2020 at 11:05 am

Here’s the availability of those programmes as of 16-01-2020 for Prime UK viewers:

Vis a vis (Locked up) – not available on Prime but it’s available on 4OD Isabel – not available Diablo Guardián – available Capadocia – not available Un Extraño Enemigo – available Pequeñas Coincidencias – not available Las Aventuras del Capitán Alatriste – not available Six Dreams – available Lo Que Escondían sus Ojos – not available Corazón Contento – not available La usurpadora – not available Hermanos – not available Infieles – available

El Corazón de Sergio Ramos – I seriously don’t believe Sergio Ramos has a heart so I didn’t even bother checking if it is available… As it’s about a football player, I am pretty sure it is, if anyone wants to find out if the pig has a heart or not 😀

January 16, 2020 at 12:02 pm

Wow, thank you for this amazing summary! Looks like the main ones available are the Prime Originals, which makes sense.

I wish there were an automatic way to check availability based on country. It’s all I can do to keep up with the US content on Prime and Netflix!

Not a football fan either! I try to include content for a variety of tastes. 😉

January 17, 2020 at 3:34 am

@Ingrid I am a football fan. I just can’t stand Sergio Ramos 😀

January 17, 2020 at 12:15 pm

Ha… he does seem obnoxious!

March 9, 2020 at 4:18 pm

Isabel is no longer available on Prime in the U.S. Does anyone know where it may be available? Thanks.

March 11, 2020 at 8:45 am

Hi Elena, thanks for letting me know. I’ve been traveling in Brazil and haven’t been able to update my listings as usual. I see Amazon’s also removed Vis a Vis… that’s too bad… a couple of the best shows.

Looks like Isabel’s available on the RTVE website (they are the creators of the show), but you would probably need a VPN since it’s not available to viewers in the US: https://www.rtve.es/television/isabel-la-catolica/capitulos-completos/ .

Also don’t forget to try your local library… mine doesn’t have the series on DVD or Hoopla, but it is available through interlibrary loan.

Hello, I just read that you were considering Livit in Puebla. I have studied there several times over the years, as well as online. I highly recommend it! The world has surely changed since your post, but I know that the school is open to a limited number of students, taking a necessary precautions to maintain safety. The directors of the school, Scott and Maru are excellent and take a special interest in their students. I really can’t say enough about them! I lived in Brooklyn for almost 30 years and now live in Xalapa, Veracruz. I’m still friends with Scott and Maru. Best of luck.

Do you know of a show about a married couple, they have a son. The husband is sick or gets sick and wife begins to have an affair with a women, who is an actress or artist. I watched it on daily motion. They spoke in Spanish I believe, as it had English cc. It was like middle 2000s. That’s all I can remember.

I am enjoying the first of four seasons of Estoy Vivo, which is free on Amazon. From Spain, sci-fi, fantasy, light touch. Easy to switch between Spanish and English subtitles if something’s not clear. Rated TV-MA, which seems right to me. The series description and first episode description give away the premise, so skip those if you’d rather be surprised (and I admit that the premise needs to be taken with a grain of salt).

May 4, 2023 at 10:14 am

Mil gracias, Mike, I’ve added it.

Thanks for the recommendation! Sadly it’s not available on Amazon Prime in the UK. I did find it on RTVE player but without English subtitles https://www.rtve.es/play/videos/estoy-vivo/

May 5, 2023 at 11:08 am

Oh, bummer, but thanks for the link, Pradeep. It’s hard to see all the content we want without a VPN.

Welcome. I did a search on – rtve subtitles – and it looks like there might be some fixes available.

José Andrés’s Favorite Restaurants in Spain, According to His New Travel Show

By Alma Avalle

As seen on Discovery Jose Andres holds a tray with ready cooked belly fat as Diego Guerrero sets it on a rice made in...

Chef, restaurateur, and philanthropist José Andrés has a new travel show, and it’s all about his homeland. Across  José Andrés and Family in Spain ’s six-episode run, the food magnate and El Bulli alum takes his American-born daughters Carlota, Inés, and Lucía to explore the cuisines of Spain, the country where he was born and received his culinary education.

Like any good travel show, Andrés’s new program—streaming December 27 on Discovery+—doesn’t just entertain. Instead, it offers a series of great dining itineraries for many of the Iberian country’s most beloved food destinations, including Barcelona, Madrid, and Andalusia, for a delicious survey of the world’s tapas capital.

If you want to eat and travel like Andrés, this list of every restaurant, bar, and food destination from the show is the place to start.

José Andrés arrived in Barcelona at just six years old, spending most of his childhood and attending culinary school in the Catalonian city. “This is where I became who I am,” he tells his two eldest daughters in the episode intro, before the trio begin on a reverent tour of the city’s many tapas spots.

Run by Michelin-star chef Carles Abellan—a former classmate of Andrés in culinary school. Andrés and Abellan prepare a medley of fresh seafood in the episode, starring shrimp, lemon, and fresh Spanish olive oil.

At a café bar named after Pinnochio, the Andrés family stop for cafe con leche, xuxos (flaky, fried pastries, dusted with sugar and filled with crema Catalana), and a glass of Cava.

Run by three fellow El Bulli alums, Disfrutar’s name is the Spanish word for “to enjoy.” Andrés brings his daughters to Disfrutar for a tasting menu at the exclusive chef’s table, where they savor a variety of elaborate deconstructed dishes keeping the spirit of El Bulli alive today.

This pastry shop is run by Christian Escribà, a fourth generation pastry chef Andrés describes as the “Willy Wonka of Barcelona.” Escribà offers a huge swath of whimsically designed cakes and confections, including hyperrealistic edible high heels, “cheeseburger” macarons, and crema Catalanas, Catalan puddings similar to crème brûlée.

As seen on Discovery Diego Guerrero Carlos Sanchez Mila Ins Carlota Jose Andrs and Pepa Muñoz enjoy the meal the chefs...

The family’s road trip through Spain continues in Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region. Known as Al-Andalus in Moorish times, Andalusian food is highly influenced by Arabic and African flavors brought to the Iberian peninsula during an era of Islamic rule.

Casa Pepe staff serve up a breakfast of fried eggplant bites and plates of ham and fried eggs atop a bed of artichokes. The vegetable is one of many common Spanish ingredients introduced to the cuisine by the Moors.

Andrés describes ventas as the Andalusian equivalent to American roadside diners—cozy spots with predictable menus focused on home-cooked flavors. Venta El Toro, run by Maruja Gallardo, serves up a gazpacho made with tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, and mint. While similar cold soups have existed for millenia, Gazpacho as it exists now has its roots in Andalusia, and is perhaps the region’s most iconic dish.

Located right on the coast, this restaurant serves what Andrés calls “some of the best bluefin tuna money can buy.” The restaurant has 15 tuna dishes on the menu, showcasing every part of the fish in a variety of ways.

Another tapas bar, the specialty at Casa Balbino is the tortilla de camarones—shrimp fritters fried in olive oil. A tour of the kitchen shows five frying stations dedicated to churning out the dish for hungry customers.

Episode three finds the family in Madrid, Spain’s capital, where they sample classics like jamón Iberico, patatas bravas, and tostas—Spanish open-faced sandwiches. Their tour of the city jumps between more tapas bars and some of the country’s ritziest spots.

Pastry chef Roberto Martín’s patisserie was originally gifted to the Spanish queen’s pastry chef in 1855, and it still supplies baked goods to the royal palace to this day. Andrés recommends the pastas del consejo—council pastries—small lemon cookies that resemble palmiers.

Asador César Rubio runs this historic restaurant, which serves whole legs of crispy-skinned lamb roasted in wood-fired oven.

Nuns in this monastery sell cookies from a venta de las dulces, a sweets window. Filled with Catholic imagery, cookies in this monastery are sold by the half kilo. Don’t expect to see the bakers though—the nuns remain cloistered and sell their wares from behind a rotating door.

Famous for its sardinas a la plancha, this tapas spot is renowned for its grilled sardines and fried peppers. Next door is the olive shop Aceitunas Jimenez, opened in 1935, which sells a variety of pickled olives.

This spot for tostas has a consistent line around the block, with distinct crowds for locals—who arrive around nine in the morning—and tourists who flock for the lunch rush.

Pastry chef Juan Alfonso Boada serves the Andrés family fresh churros and chocolate sauce before teaching Andrés’s daughter Inés to fry the desserts herself.

José Andrés calls this his favorite spot for patatas bravas, thanks to their bravas sauce. Made with paprika, olive oil, and a few more ingredients the chef refuses to share, it’s the ideal balance of brightness and heat.

At this open market, Andrés and company sample jamón Iberico and purchase a full leg to share at a potluck with friends at the end of the day.

A finished plate of Gambas al ajillo

Homeland to Spain’s iconic paella, Valencia is the Mediterranean’s busiest port. In their time in the city, Andrés’s daughters use what they’ve learned while traveling to compete in a paella competition alongside some of Valencia’s best chefs. Taking time to train for the tournament means they make slightly fewer stops on this leg of the journey.

The first stop on their paella tour is Casa Carmela, a restaurant with over 10 wide paella pans operating at a time. They sample a seafood paella with shrimp and the trademark coating of crispy rice.

Ca Cent Duros serves a variety of esmorzaret, which are like long baguette sandwiches stacked with eggs, veggies, and meats. The dish’s name literally translates to “a small meal.”

This bustling shop serves up cocas, Catalan flatbreads that are similar to Italian pizzas with the notable absence of cheese. Instead, they’re topped up with zucchini, tomatoes, and more.

Host Jos Andres in the kitchen cooking for his family and friends in Asturias as seen on Jos Andrs Project.

José Andrés was born in this mountainous region in Spain’s northwest, home to miles of farmland and some of Spain’s most famous cheeses.

The family’s first stop is Casa Marcial, a restaurant that holds two Michelin stars, where they receive an overview of Asturian cuisine from chefs Nacho Manzano, Dulce Martínez, and Marcos Morán.

More than a single restaurant, this walkable street in Asturias’s capital city Oviedo is bustling with bars and cafés specializing in the region’s signature drink—hard cider. They also sample another specialty of the region called cachopo, a fried snack made of thin-sliced veal, ham, and cheese.

This bakery is one of Spain’s oldest, founded in 1914. The family sample a number of pastries, but the stars are the casadielles, a long flaky treat rolled in sugar, and carbayones, Asturias’s regional dessert. Carbayones are similar to eclairs, filled with an almond-and-egg-based pastry cream.

To taste Asturias’s wide array of wild mushrooms, we stop at Xune Andrade’s restaurant Monte, which is run out of his grandmother’s old house. Everything served at Monte is foraged or grown within a mile of the restaurant. Andrade prepares a fungus-themed menu to show off the forest’s many indigenous wild mushrooms.

The final episode follows José Andrés and family off the coast of Africa to the Canary Islands. This warm vacation destination is home to delicious seafood like moray eel and wines grown in Lanzarote’s mineral-rich volcanic soils.

Joined by food writer Javier Suárez, the family stops at a restaurant for barnacles, octopus, and huge Atlantic shrimp, served with a variety of bright tropical sauces like mojo verde and mojo rojo.

Wrestling manager Aduén Morales brings the family for a pre-match meal in the village of Haría, where they order puchero Canario, a stew of green beans, potatoes, pumpkins, and meat. They then go to watch Lucha Canaria, the island’s traditional team wrestling sport.

Andrés meets his longtime friend Fermín Otamendi, a fifth generation winemaker at the Bodega El Grifo, founded in 1775. He and his children sample the island’s wines, which have a high mineral content and low sweetness, courtesy of the island’s mild climate and ashy volcanic soil.

Casa de papel Spanish shows

The Best Spanish Series on Netflix in 2023

Inside:  A guide to the top Spanish series on Netflix, organized by genres.

As Netflix’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, they’ve been busy expanding their selection of Spanish-language TV shows.

And these aren’t limited to your  abuela’s   telenovelas,  either:  you can find a Netflix series for everyone . With shows set in Spain and across Latin America, you can find everything from BBC-type dramas to reality TV.

I’m a Spanish-speaking mom and teacher, but not a native speaker. I still need lots of Spanish input.  And lucky for me, improving my language skills can be as easy as  setting the audio and subtitles to Spanish , and getting into a good Spanish Netlflix series.

One more note: this list was NOT created for teachers wanting Spanish series to watch in class, with learners.   If that’s you, don’t worry! I have a whole post on  Spanish-language shows to use in class and for learners .

SPANISH SERies ON NETFLIX: WHAT TO WATCH

This list of Spanish Netflix shows is LONG! So I divided it into sections.

You can scroll the entire list, or click on the genre most interesting to you:

Contents: 1. Modern Series in Spanish 2. Period Dramas in Spanish 3. Spanish Comedies on Netflix 4. Spanish Drama/Mystery/Thrillers 5. Action TV Series in Spanish 6. Biographical Shows in Spanish 7. Musical Spanish Shows 8. Reality/Documentary Spanish Shows

Ready? Let’s get started.

Modern Spanish SEries on Netflix

These TV shows were created since 2015 and are set in the present. They reflect current themes and life now, and have that “modern Netflix| feel.

1. La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)

The massively popular show Money  Heist , as it’s known in English,  is now the #1 Original Foreign Show on Netflix . A group of burglars joins together to pull off the most daring robbery in the history of Spain, guided by a mastermind called “The Professor.” The original plan was to pull of the perfect crime: an infiltration of the Royal Mint of Spain, that would leave them rich and leave no victims. As plans go awry, relationships and loyalty are tested in this psychological thriller.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Breaking Bad, Ocean’s Eleven, or Inception.  (2017-)

2. Club de Cuervos (Club of Crows)

A dysfunctional brother-sister siblings combo are left in charge of a soccer team in this dramady, and a power struggle ensues.  Club de Cuervos  is one of the few Spanish-language TV series that taps into more ironic and dry modern humor. Irreverent, but also complex, funny, and memorable. (This was one of those shows I initially wrote off, then totally got into. The first episode is fairly explicit but gets a tamer as the series goes on.)

Set in Mexico. Watch if you’d like a combo of Orange is the New Black, La Casa de las Flores, and a touch of House of Cards.  (2015-2019)

Ana María left her family’s billion-dollar tequila empire in Mexico years ago, along with the violence and compromise involved with it. When her aging father unexpectedly calls to say he wants to leave the family business in her hands, she must decide to stay in the US or re-enter her old life– to either fight against the corruption or be sucked into it herself.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked Ingobernable, La Reina del Sur, The Good Wife, or Breaking Bad.   (2019-)

4. Ingobernable

Starring the iconic Kate del Castillo as the first lady of Mexico,  Ingobernable  begins as her world is turned upside down and she finds herself running for her life. Accused of assassinating her husband, she must find her way outside her life of wealth and power, prove her innocence, and untangle the web of corruption gripping the Mexican presidency.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked House of Cards, The Good Wife, Narcos or Breaking Bad.  (2017- )

5. La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers)

La Casa de Flores is an interesting mix of traditional soap elements (a wealthy, socialite family plagued by past misdeeds and secrets) and modern comedy. It’s quickly become one of the most-watched Spanish shows on Netflix. The series begins as the wealthy de la Mora family is celebrating their renowned Flower Shop’s anniversary– when their father’s secret mistress ends her life, leaving behind letters that expose his double life.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked Transparent, Arrested Development, and Modern Family.   (2018-)

Three scholarship students begin their first year at an elite school in Spain, attended by students from the wealthiest families in Spain. We quickly find out that one of the police are investigating a student murder, and each episode is presented as a flashback. (Although this series has so much potential as it explores race, class, and religion, I was a little put off by the depiction of explicit situations these supposed teens are in. Definitely TV-MA.)

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked 13 Reasons Why, Orange is the New Black, or Dynasty.   (2018-)

7.  Valeria

Valeria’s writing career is not going well, nor is her marriage, but she does have a tight-knit group of friends who navigate modern relationships in Madrid together. (Does this sound like Sex in the City? Yep– replace NYC with Madrid and you’ve got it!)

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Girls, Chicas del Cable, or Sex in the City.   (2020-)

8. Madre solo Hay Dos (Daughter from Another Mother)

Two babies, switched at birth. We’ve heard of this plot before– except  this  time, their mothers decide to create a family unit together, resulting in a touching, hilarious, and unexpected story together.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked One Day at a Time or 100 días para enamorarnos.  (2021-)

9.  Desenfrenadas  (Unstoppable)

Four young women set out on a weekend road trip Oaxaca, Mexico, and the trip takes a turn when they are surprised by a fourth passenger. This empowering dramedy portrays a different side to the lives of Mexican women than what’s typically shown in Latin films and series.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you like House of Flowers, Girls, or Chicas del Cable.  (2020-)

Spanish Period Dramas on netflix

These are some of my favorite Spanish TV shows on Netflix — dramas set across different places and historical contexts. Just a note: I put El ministerio del tiempo under the drama/mystery/thriller section, but those of you who love history mixed in with Sci-Fi will want to check it out! You can also jump to the  Spanish biographical shows  section if that interests you.

This is a gorgeous series if you like period pieces and don’t mind a little soapy drama. Set in a top fashion gallery in 1950s Spain, the son of the owner falls in love with one of the seamstresses downstairs. The aesthetics, clever dialogue, and lively personalities, make this one of my personal favorite Spanish shows on Netflix. (Velvet Colección, a spin-off series, is now available as well!)

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Mad Men and Downton Abbey.   (2013 – 2016)

2.  La Cocinera de Castamar (The Cook of Castamar)

This series takes place in 18th-century Madrid. It centers on the love story between Clara Belmonte, an agoraphobic cook, and the Duke of Castamar, a widowed nobleman who’s dealing with the loss of his pregnant wife.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Bridgerton and Downton Abbey.   (2021-)

3. Alta Mar (High Seas)

Smuggled passengers. Buried family secrets. Romance, intrigue, stormy seas, an 600 passengers on luxury shop bound for Brazil would make for an interesting enough voyage– until the murders begin. This murder mystery set in the 1940’s will remind you of the show Velvet, with gorgeous scenery and plenty of drama to go around, though with faster-paced storytelling and more suspense.

Spanish cast, set on the Atlantic Ocean. Watch if you liked Downton Abbey, Sherlock, and Agathie Christie.   (2019-)

4. Siempre Bruja (Always a Witch)

Starring an Afro-Colombian time-traveling witch,  Siempre Bruja  mixes the feel of a historical telenovela with modern supernatural twists. Carmen, a slave living in the 17th century, is condemned to be burned at the stake after her owners discover she and their son are in love. Carmen makes a deal to with a wizard and finds herself in modern-day Cartagena, where she must navigate her new surroundings on the condition that she not use her powers.  Pros : the series features a black women as the lead, with a strong cast and gorgeous scenery. It’s much cleaner than most shows and could work to show in high school classes.  Cons : there is so much potential with the story, but the show delivers a shallow treatment of serious themes, depending on more than one racial cliché along the way.

Set in Colombia. Watch if you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Arrow, or Alias Grace.  (2019-)

5. Gran Hotel (Grand Hotel)

Here’s your really well-done telenovela that even my action-loving husband couldn’t stop watching. Full of intrigue and mystery, it’s got plenty of the  novela  qualities– but with a solid story and characters to back it up. Like Velvet, the supporting characters are the best part of the story in this turn-of-the-century drama.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Downton Abbey and Poldark.  (2011-2013)

6. Las Chicas del Cable (Cable Girls)

From the creators of  Gran Hotel  and  Velvet , this Spanish show is packed with favorite actors from both shows, as well as  El Barco  and  El Internado.  It follows four women who work for the National Telephone Company in the 1920’s Madrid, a turbulent time of old traditions vs. progressivism.I have a love-hate relationship with this one, but check it out if you like gorgeous period dramas, with lots of drama.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Peaky Blinders, Mad Men, or Downton Abbey.

7. Alguien Tiene Que Morir (Someone Has to Die)

A limited-series thriller produced by Netflix, this show features an all-star caste and is set in 1950s Spain, under the Franco regime. Gabino Falcón returns to Spain after living in Mexico for 10 years, under the expectation that he will find someone to marry. However, he shocks his family and community when he shows up accompanied by a famous male ballet dancer.

Set in Mexico and Spain. Watch if you liked House of Flowers, The Mess You Leave Behind.  (2020)

8. Morocoo: Tiempos de Guerra  (Morroco: Love in the Times of War)

Set in the 1920’s, a group of wealthy nurses is sent to the Moroccan front during the Rif War and must adapt to the harsh conditions and reality of wartime. If you weren’t ready to let  Gran Hotel  go, Cristina is back as the star of this romantic drama.

Set in Morocco and Spain. Watch if you liked Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey, or Land Girls.

In a desperate attempt to find a lawyer and help her husband get out of jail in 1960s Barcelona, Helena becomes involved with the heroin trade as is forced to seek help from an aberrant, violent gangster– and begins a cat and mouse game with police herself. Beware that while this well-produced with an incredible main actor, it is definitely gritty with more than one disturbing scene.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Beaking Bad and Narcos. (2019-)

Comedies in Spanish on Netflix

1. cien días para enamorarnos (100 days to fall in love).

Thing begin to unravel in a tight-knit group of friends when one of the couples in the group announces the are separating for 100 days, and create a contract to establish the boundaries. This shows feels like a telenovela with a  lot  of drama, but it’s also modern and funny, and slightly addicting with with dozens of episodes to watch.

Set in Houston, Texas. Watch if you liked How I Met Your Mother, La Casa de las Flores, or Friends.   (2020- )

2. Paquita Salas

In the 90s, Paquita Salas a top talent agent from the 90s. But now their agency is struggling to find new clients. After losing her most famous client, Paquita must reinvent herself to keep the agency alive.

A wealthy family’s life comes crashing down when the dad leaves and their fortune is lost. The mother must get a real job and the kids have to adjust to a “normal” life in this lighthearted dramedy.

Spanish Drama/Mystery/Thriller TV Series

1. el ministerio del tiempo (the ministry of time).

El Ministerio del Tiempo  is a top-secret time-travel agency that functions loosely under the government of Spain. As the series opens, three new agents join forces to guard the doors of time: a 16th-century soldier, a 21st-century paramedic, and a 19th-century student. This one is packed with history and art as the trio defends time itself, preventing intruders from using time travel for their own gain.

Set in Spain, mostly. Watch if you liked Dr. Who, The Last Kingdom, or Orphan Black.  (2015-2020)

2. El Desorden Que Dejas (The Mess You Leave Behind)

Based on the 2016 award winning novel (El desorden que dejas), this limited-series psychological thriller follows a woman who takes a mid-year teaching position in her husband’s small hometown, in the midst of a failing marriage and the recent grief of losing her mother. She soon discovers she’s entered a dangerous web of painful secrets in both the town and the school. This one is good but fairly dark, so check out the preview to see if it fits for you.

Based on real-life events,  La niña  tells the incredible story of a girl forcibly recruited by the  guerillas  in Colombia, who then escapes and tries to reintegrate into society. Unlike many of the other series in this list, it gives a in-depth look into everyday life for working-class families in Latin America.

Spanish Action Series on Netflix

1. costa del sol.

In a newly post-Franco Spain, drug-trafficking is on the rise in the 1970s. Four very different police detectives come together to form an elite squad to fight crime and the drug trade together.

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Sweeney and the Professionals, Fugitiva, or Narcos.

Based on true events, this series explores the growth of drug cartels, beginning with the rise of Pablo Escobar in Colombia. There’s a mix of English and Spanish as the story is told through the eyes of DEA agent Steve Murphy and his team. This is obviously a violent show about a difficult part of history, but also a very high-quality and nuanced look into the relations between the DEA, Latin American governments, and cartels.

Set in Colombia, Mexico, and other parts of the Americas. Watch if you liked Black Mirror, House of Cards, or Breaking Bad.  (2015 – 2017)

3. Vis a vis

Set in Spain. Watch if you liked Orange is the New Black or La casa de papel.  (2015 – 2019)

4. El Dragón: Return of a Warrior

Miguel Garze returns to Mexico after growing up in Japan, following the murder of his parents as a young boy. Unbeknownst to him, his education in martial arts and discipline is part of a secret plot to install him as the head of his family’s cartel.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked La Reina del Sur, Ingobernable, or Wu Assassins.  (2019-)

5. El Chapo

It’s a reasonable criticism that too many shows/movies paint Latin America as full of drugs, violence, etc. And this show was hard to watch for the violence, same as  Pablo Escobar.  This one is well-done, in my opinion, and provides the history of El Chapo’s rise to power. (It’s interesting to watch alongside Kate del Castillo’s documentary “The Day I Met Chapo,” also available on Netflix).

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked Narcos and Ozark.  (2017)

6. No te Puedes Esconder (You Cannot Hide)

A mother flees Mexico with here daughter and tries to create a new life in Spain, while hiding from her husband’s drug-trafficking past. A mix of fast-paced action and soapy  telenovela  feel.

Set in Mexico and Spain. Watch if you liked Monarca, Unauthorized Living, or Ingobernable.   (2019-)

7. La Reina del Sur

Queen of the South is based on a novel of the same name, and tells the story of Teresa Mendoza’s return to Mexico after 8 years, when she was part of a small-time drug cartel and her boyfriend was murdered. This time, she returns and decides to take control of her own destiny, including rising in power to the top position in the cartel.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked Pablo Escobar, Narcos, or Ingobernable.   (2011 – 2019)

8. Sobreviviendo a Escobar (Alias J.J.)

If you haven’t gotten your fill of narco-theme shows,  Sobreviviendo Pablo Escobar  was a fascinating follow-up to  Pablo Escobar  (and  Narcos ). It details what happened the Escobar’s people and rival cartels after his death.

Set in Colombia. Watch if you like Narcos.   (2017)

9. Fugitiva

A fast-paced (though perhaps B-quality) story of a wealthy woman who stages the kidnapping of herself and her children, in order to escape the dangerous community her husband is involved with.

Set in Mexico. Watch if you liked Ingobernable, No te puedes esconder, or Hachie.  (2018-)

A dramatized telling of Luis Miguel’s life and rise to fame as the  Sol de México . The story moves between his early years of stardom and childhood, exploring the disappearance of his mother and tortured relationship with his father. Not an easy watch in terms of the family dynamics, but  Luis Miguel  just might be a breath of fresh air for viewers looking for a violence-free Latin American show.

Learn the story behind the Queen of Salsa: how she began her career in the tumultuous years of Cuba in the 50’s, and eventually rose to be one of the top salsa performers of all time. Gorgeous filming and music in this series.

While Narcos narrates from a American perspective,  Pablo Escobar  is told directly from the Colombian side and provides an extensive, gripping look into the life of  Colombian drug lord Escobar and his effect on different communities in Colombia. Though not a historical documentary, it is very well done.

Set in Colombia. Watch if you liked Narcos and Breaking Bad.  (2012)

La Niña was an amazing show (you’re the only blog so far I have run across that has it). Yago is another well done telenovela set in Mexico City. Iván Sánchez stars in it and seeks revenge on all who had wronged Omar. It has great characters, acting and I actually got used to the Mexican dialect as opposed to Colombian (which is more familiar to me). I’ve been studying Spanish for a little over 2 years and now I’m trying to develop an ear for it. I notice some of the same key phases are used over and over, like ‘no se preocupe’, ’tranquilo’, ‘espera’, y ‘vamos’. I have found these shows to be much better than American tv shows. The plots are more intricate and the acting and characters are top notch.

I will look into Yago! Thanks for letting me know. You’re so smart to look up authentic shows as you learn– best of luck on your Spanish journey!

Tienes que ver lady la vendedora de rosas! Me encantó

Sin senos yo hoy pariso…….and la reina del sur…..lady…..I agree Spainish shows are much better than american shows…I only know a little Spainish….so I rely on subtithles…but these are fantastic……

I am from Spain and I never got too much into Spanish shows.. until I started with velvet……. Is when everything started. My husband (American) and I are crazy about Spanish shows. I loved El tiempo entre costuras, Las chicas del cable, Gran Hotel and Morocco en tiempos de guerra. I am also a Spanish teacher 🙂

Here is a little bit of the movie A family with a daughter catalina mother lost 2 other kids to the streets a doese what ever she has to. To protect her new daughter

I’m hoping to find a show that’s not from Spain that’s also not about drugs or corruption. I don’t think I saw one on the list.

I’ve watched El Barco (I agree with your take on that one) and El Internado (it was good!), but I want to practice my Latin American Spanish now. 🙂

Maybe try Luis Miguel? You are right… so many shows about drugs.

EL BARCO is a winner sometimes you just need to sit back relax and stop whining… they are movies and EL BARCO has us feeling every emotion wether you think it was too much or too little… it was really just perfect… I will watch it again and again every 46 episode especially Ulises and Ainhoa at the bar scene… with that beautiful JOVENES ENTERNAMENTE POL 314 spanish song wow….

It had me in a different world the time I watched that series… it even warmed my heart and thought me how to love again… after losing the mother of my son I swore to never love again…

Thanks to the creators and actors of that series for making me human again.

The author merely shared her personal review about this show; she didn’t “whine.” This show was perfect for you, great, but don’t expect it to be the same for others.

I am teaching an Hispanic Studies course for native/upper-level/heritage speakers. Juniors and Seniors. Could any of these be appropriate to recommend for them?

Thanks so much!

None would be appropriate without some editing, but the safest ones seem to be Celia, Siempre Bruja (haven’t finished it), and Gran Hotel (definitely needs editing)!

You didn’t mention Celia Cruz which I thoroughly enjoyed…Spanish from Cuba and the music…to die for. Did you mention La Piloto? El Hotel de los Secretos? My favorites so far have been: Juana Inés, La Niña, La Esclava Blanca, El Barco, Celiz Cruz, La Piloto, El Internado. I’m going to start on your list now. Mil gracias!

Somehow I missed that one! Sometimes the series don’t show up the same here in Peru. I am adding it to my to-watch list right now!

Hi, would you recommend these titles for IB students (16-18 years old)? I am looking for shows to help them improve their language learning whilst engaging in something entertaining.

You would need to check the ratings and consider your school for sure. :/ Most of these have at least some level of “inappropriate” for school settings. I sooo wish there were some clean, interesting options I could recommend without any reservations!

I absolutely *loved* El Tiempo Entre Costuras and thoroughly enjoy El Internado. I’m watching it again in Spanish with Spanish subtitles (the first time through was with English subtitles). At the top of the page, it does say 2019, though the post and comments were last year or earlier, but as an update, El Tiempo Entre Costuras is sadly no longer on Netflix. I will definitely have to check some of these others out. Do you find that ratings for Spanish TV are milder than we would rate them here? Similar to movie ratings in the US in the ’80s and early ’90s, El Internado, for instance, is rated as TV-PG. The language alone would possibly make it an R as a movie. (Kids in peril do tend to throw the F word around a lot, as well as its variations.)

Hi everyone I teach Spanish in New Jersey. Please watch EVA, NO NEED TO EDIT it, and students love it Sandra

What is the show thats on the cover, or background behind the title?

La Casa de las Flores 🙂

Go Vive a tu manera!! 1st totally appropriate for students even elementary. 2nd season starting in June. Like a Spanish version of glee. No sex. No swearing even their clothes are appropriate

Las chicas de la mafia/ Celia location wasn’t Cuba was Cartagena Colombia and the actors are Colombians as well. My kids love El chavo!!

La Niña is amazing. La Ley Secreta is my new obsession. I watch sin Senos si hay paraiso but that show was way too crazy for me.

Do you know how to slow down the speed so the speech is a little bit slower? It would help me a lot. On YouTube I change the speed in settings from Normal to .75 and it makes such a big difference for me. Thank you!

Not that I know of! I wish there were, as I use that feature in YouTube. I just put on subtitles in Spanish when I can.

Thanks for the lighter & funny ones!! I watch Nailed it México with my middle schoolers. They love it! I hope they do another season!!

Dont forget Vis a Vis. One of my favorite spaniard tv shows.

Just finished watching All for Love (Amar Y Vivir) Colombian,69 episodes series. Loved it!!! The songs are phenomenal. The lead actress is the same one as the one in La Nina. I’m fluent in Italian wanting to improve my high school Spanish and by watching so many Spanish speaking shows, I can honestly say that I don’t need the subtitles any more. I’ve binged on Luis Miguel, Velvet, La chicas del Cable, Morocco in the times of War and Silvana sin Lana which has hardly any nudity nor violence.

The best love story is Velvet I’ve never seen a better movie watched it 4 times . Miquel and Paula are the best please make more movies with them.

I absolutely LOVED “La Venganza de Analia” or Her Mother’s Killer. 50+ episodes. I cried, laughed, and was always waiting for what was next. My mom still talks about it. We stayed up until 3am to finish it..lol.. It’s not full of violence as the title implies so it’s a winner for me.

This is a great guide! I’ve been trying to find some Spanish-language shows to watch on Netflix, and this guide has been really helpful. It’s nice to see a comprehensive list of options, so I can find something to watch no matter what my mood is. Thanks for putting this together!

I would also include “El Rey: Vicente Fernandez.” Es buenísimo. It would also be appropriate for High School.

Me encanta “La flor más bella.” Very similar to “Never Have I Ever” and other teen rom-com series, only less constant talk about sex. Lots of interesting slang, and, bonus, turns out the lead can sing like an angel! Seems suitable for HS, but preview to be sure.

Definitely not suitable for HS, but hilarious, is “La guerra de los vecinos.” A “Trading Places” Mexican class-conflict comedy. I loved the first season. Didn’t love the changes made in the second season quite as much 🙁

The 21 Best Spanish Shows on Netflix

Stop everything and binge one of these Spanish-language hits.

spanish tv shows netflix

If you haven't checked out any of Netflix's international offerings, you haven't been getting your subscription's worth. The streaming giant has built an impressive catalog of TV series from all over the globe, with several Spanish, French , and Korean hits entering the U.S. Top 10 over the past few years.

Netflix's Spanish shows are must-tries for any telenovela fan, and include both classics of the genre and new additions that subvert some beloved tropes. For anyone who wasn't introduced their first Spanish-language show in a high school classroom, there are several Spanish shows on Netflix that will remind you of your all-time favorites, from Gossip Girl to Sex and the City to Ted Lasso . Ahead, the Spanish-language shows on Netflix to check out immediately.

'Money Heist'

One of Netflix's most popular international titles, this story of masked robbers who set out to steal €2.4 billion from the Royal Mint of Spain won fans over with its high-octane thrills and the compelling backstories behind the code-named characters.

Told mostly in English with Spanish dialogue, this popular crime drama chronicles the rise of the cocaine trade in late-'80s Colombia, following both the kingpins leading the industry, including Pablo Escobar, and law enforcement trying to take them down. It also spawned a companion series centered on the Mexican war on drugs.

In this haves-and-have-nots teen drama reminiscent of Gossip Girl , three working class students receive scholarships to an elite Spanish private school, Las Encinas. Unlike Gossip Girl , the clashes between the wealthy and working class leads to murder, with the first season framing all of the students as possible suspects.

'Cable Girls'

This historical drama, which is also the first Spanish show produced by Netflix, follows four female employees of a telecommunications company in 1920s Madrid. Over five seasons, Alba, Ángeles, Carlota, and Marga deal with the challenges facing working women, as well as political issues of the period.

Netflix has remade the beloved '00s telenovela, set at the prestigious Elite Way School on the outskirts of Mexico City. In this series, a new group of six young musicians have to deal with a secret organization called The Lodge, who do whatever they can to run their dreams off track.

'The House of Flowers'

This Mexican dark comedy follows the wealthy and dysfunctional de la Mora family, who owns a prestigious flower shop and a struggling cabaret, both called the House of Flowers. Known as the "millennial telenovela," the show explores many of the hypocrisies within modern Mexican society, while also featuring several LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.

'Who Killed Sara?'

Last year's surprise hit follows Alex, who lived happily as a young man until his sister Sara was killed and a rich family manipulated him into taking the fall. When he's released after 18 years in prison, Alex is hell-bent on using his tech and explosives expertise to find out who killed Sara and take down his rich former friends.

'High Seas'

This Agatha Christie-style post-WWII mystery sees a group of Spanish aristocrats and crew members on a luxury cruise get entangled in a murder mystery.

This Spanish dramedy is a must-watch for Sex and the City fans. The titular Valeria, a writer working on her first novel, and her friends Lola, who's dating a married man, Carmen, who has an office crush, and Nerea (Teresa Riott), who's closeted and living with her parents, have the type of enduring friendship and sexual entanglements that SATC fans would love.

Ana María has lived away from her family and its shady tequila and hotel empire for twenty years. When her father is murdered soon after she returns to Mexico, the estranged daughter decides to stay, enraging her brothers Joaquín and Andrés. All three fall on different sides of several conflicts—whether or not to clean up the business, whether to share ownership—while also trying to keep their family lives together among the chaos.

'Dark Desire'

This erotic thriller follows a married college professor who has a one-night stand with a younger man, while thinking her husband is cheating on her. Eventually the young man starts involving himself in her life, as she discovers their night together may not have been as coincidental as it seemed.

'The Cook of Castamar'

This period drama goes all the way back to 1720s Madrid, adapting the novel of the same name by Fernando J. Muñez. After developing agoraphobia following the death of her father, Clara becomes a cook for the widowed Duke of Castamar, who has just returned to society after his pregnant wife's death. The two eventually begin a swoon-worthy love story.

'I Am Georgina'

This reality docuseries follows the glamorous life of businesswoman Georgina Rodriguez, who's also the longtime partner of soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

This period romance set in the fashion world of 1950s Spain sees a working seamstress fall in love with the heir to a fashion empire.

'La Reina del Sur'

Longtime telenovela queen Kate del Castillo stars as Teresa, a young woman who goes on to become a ruthless drug trafficker known as "La Mexicana." The original 2011 season was so popular it spawned both a U.S. remake (USA Network's Queen of the South ), and a 2019 renewal, where Teresa is dragged back into the world she thought she left.

'Club de Cuervos'

Before Ted Lasso , there was this Mexican dramedy about billionaire Mexican siblings feuding over their family-owned soccer team after their father's death. While a bit edgier than the other beloved soccer show, Club de Cuervos also has a balance of laugh-out-loud comedy and heart-wrenching drama, as well as a passionate fanbase.

'The Queen of Flow'

This drama, set in the reggaeton music industry in Medellin, Colombia, follows Yeimy, a talented singer-songwriter whose youthful dreams are dashed when she's set up and jailed for for attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S. Two decades later, she returns to Medellin for revenge and a new chance at stardom.

This Spanish thriller follows three exotic dancers from different walks of life who are forced into prostitution. After trying and failing to kill their club-owner-turned pimp, the women go on the run, evading their oppressors before eventually hunting them down.

'Control Z'

This high school mystery centers on Sofía, a loner who lost her father at a very young age. When a hacker starts spilling the dirty secrets of everyone at her school, Sofía sets out to stop the hacker before something catastrophic happens.

'Ingobernable'

This drama starts with Mexico's First Lady Emilia Urquiza (another role perfected by Kate Del Castillo) leaving her husband, the President. When he's murdered soon after, Emilia is framed and has to work with new allies to save herself and the country.

Male stripper Hugo has served seven years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He's up against a rich and powerful family, trying to prove that Hugo's ex was the one who killed her husband and framed him. With even his rising star lawyer doubting him, Hugo has only his best friends and fellow strippers on his side (and yes, there are some flashbacks of their shows).

'Taco Chronicles'

This mouth-watering docuseries goes deep on the taco, showing the history and different preparation methods of six styles of tacos, from al pastor to guisado (stews). Helping Taco Chronicles stand out from other food shows is its narration, where different actors personify the type of taco featured in each episode.

Of course, the show will introduce viewers to plenty of local experts, celebrated chefs, and old friends of the family with each episode too.

“My daughters have heard endless stories about the people, places, and food that shaped me as a young man, but we got the chance to go visit, meet and taste everything together,” Andrés adds. “There is no better way to learn about Spanish culture than with a fork and spoon in hand.”

Created by: Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona

Starring: Itzan Escamilla, Omar Ayuso, Claudia Salas, Georgina Amorós, Carla Díaz, Martina Cariddi, Manu Ríos, Pol Granch and Andrés Velencoso

Elite is one of Netflix’s top Spanish series and it’s now in its sixth season.  Elite season 5  arrived on Netflix on April 8 and a sixth season is coming on Nov. 18.

Elite begins with three working-class students who get scholarships to the elite school, Las Encinas in Spain. But their transfer to the exclusive private school causes a clash between them and the wealthy students, leading to murder.

It’s filled with drama, suspense, and plenty of thrills. There are so many relationships to root for and be against. The mysteries are compelling and leave you wanting more. But I think what’s most enjoyable about  Elite is the amazing character development. Over the seasons, viewers get to see all of the characters grow. Puerta 7

Tackling the impassioned and dangerous world of las barras bravas (soccer fan clubs) in Argentina, Puerta 7 follows Dolores Fonzi’s Diana, a cop intent on ridding this sporting side-hustle of the corruption and violence that she’s seen firsthand. Created by Martín Zimmerman and written by Patricio Vega ( El lobista ), this gritty crime drama unearths the dark underbelly of the country’s national pastime to deliver a gripping thriller intent on keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez

Taking a decidedly different approach, Argentine soccer drama  Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez goes the biopic route. The Netflix series tells the origin story of Carlos Tevez, who went from growing up in the “Fuerte Apache” housing project, a site notorious for its violence, to becoming a world-renowned Boca Juniors soccer player. Focused on his younger years and his vexed relationship with his biological mother, the Balthazar Murillo -starring series is an ode to daydreaming kids everywhere.

La bala loca

Mauro Murillo ( Alejandro Goic ) built his reputation on being a fearless journalist who spoke to power during the Pinochet dictatorship. At age 50, divorced and spiraling, he now finds himself looking to solve the seemingly simple death of a fellow journalist – due to a “stray bullet,” ergo the show’s title – that he believes was orchestrated by high-powered men who had a lot to gain from squashing an ongoing investigation into their shady dealings.

El reemplazante

When a risky (and illegal) gamble costs Carlos (Iván Álvarez de Araya) his job at an investment firm and lands him in prison, he’s forced to reassess his life. After serving his sentence he moves in with his father and brother, both of whom work as schoolteachers with the at-risk youth in their neighborhood. It’s they who urge Carlos to take a substitute teaching position that, as stories like these always go, ends up teaching him as much as he teaches those in his care.

Green Frontier

On the one hand, Green Frontier is a detective story: Deep in the Amazon rainforest, on the border between Colombia and Brazil, two lead investigators are looking into a string of mysterious murders. But on the other, this Colombian production is a mystic story about an indigenous secret at risk of being uncovered. These twinned plots collide when the body of a woman reported to have been missing for decades shows no signs of having aged or decayed at all.

Queen of Flow

La reina del flow

Set in Medellin within the soon-to-be booming world of reggaeton, The Queen of Flow centers on Yeimy ( Carolina Ramírez ), a talented singer and lyricist who finds her dreams dashed when she’s arrested and convicted for attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S., the result of a setup by one of her closest collaborators. Close to two decades later, she finds her way back to Medellin seeking revenge and a new chance at stardom, all the while navigating dangerous enemies intent on thwarting her plans.

The Candidate

Crime Diaries: The Candidate

On March 23, 1994, Mexican presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio was shot during a campaign rally. His shocking assassination, not to mention his killer’s public admission that he acted alone, have long fed plenty of rumors and conspiracy theories. Netflix’s true crime drama Crime Diaries: The Candidate fictionalizes this key moment in Mexico’s recent history. Directed by Hiromi Kamata and Natalia Beristain, the series follows a pair of detectives and Colosio’s widow as they try to get to the truth of what really happened that fateful day.

La reina del sur

For those who’d grown up with Kate del Castillo as a telenovela queen, the arrival of La Reina del Sur in 2011 was a welcome shock. Here she was playing a young woman who goes on to become a ruthless drug trafficker known as “La Mexicana.” The gritty action-drama was a hit that was recently revived: In 2019, nearly a decade after it ended, the show was renewed for a second (and later third) season, which found Teresa being roped back into the world she thought she’d left behind.

Luis Miguel: The Series

Mexican musician LuisMi’s story was always going to make for an enjoyable television series — his rise to fame, after all, has all the hallmarks of a great biopic. A talented singer from a young age, his success has long been shadowed both by his alcoholic stage dad and the mysterious disappearance of his mother, elements that this Netflix and Telemundo musical drama tackles head on while showcasing El Sol de México’s most famous ’90s songs.

House of Flowers

The House of Flowers

This queer reimagining of the telenovela genre makes sure to upend any and every trope that characterizes the Mexican genre. Starring (solely in its first season, alas) the legendary Verónica Castro , Manolo Caro’s colorful dramedy uses the wealthy De La Mora family to explore the hypocrisy of contemporary Mexican society. Taking place both in its titular flower shop and the drag bar with the same name, this Netflix comedy is as outrageous as it is heartwarming, ultimately emerging as an ode to a different kind of family during its three-season run.

Dark Desire

On its surface, Netflix’s Dark Desire fits the bill of many erotic thrillers on the streaming platform, what with its plot about a married college professor who, convinced her husband is cheating on her, ends up having a one-night stand with a much younger man. But when he starts involving himself in her life, Alma ( Maite Perroni ) soon starts realizes their chance encounter may not have been as accidental as she thought, suggesting a much darker and dangerous plot is at stake.

The Kirlian Frequency

Taking its cues from shows like Twin Peaks and Eerie Indiana , this Argentine animated series takes place in a small town that, for all intents and purposes, is fictional. Except, how to account for the hours of presumably real-life radio broadcasts that tell of its fantastical and mysterious happenings? Enter into The Kirlian Frequency , your chance to relive these moody stories (paired with a DIY animated style) that are sure to keep you up at night.>

Cable Girls

Cable Girls

The very first Spanish original series produced by Netflix, Cable Girls is a period drama focused on four women who work at a telecommunications company in Madrid. Taking on the challenges facing working women in the late 1920s, Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira’s show put feminist issues front and center during its five seasons, juggling melodramatic storylines about affairs and romances with increasingly political subplots that upped the stakes – some even involving the oncoming Spanish Civil War.

Paquito

Paquita Salas

Created by the queer couple known as Los Javis (a.k.a. Javier Calvo  and  Javier Ambrossi ), this irreverent comedy follows its titular protagonist, a washed-up talent agent played with a blond bob wig by actor Brays Efe , who struggles with keeping up with the changing times. Initially produced as a web series that slowly built a cult following before being acquired by Netflix (which greenlit two more seasons), Paquita Salas is a raucous comedy about staying true to yourself.

This sumptuous Spanish production set in the fashion world in the late 1950s is anchored by the kind of sweeping love story that feels, like its setting, a tad old-fashioned yet entirely modern at the same time. Ana ( Paula Echevarría ) is a lowly seamstress; Alberto ( Sense8 ‘s Miguel Ángel Silvestre ) is the dashing heir to his father’s fashion empire. Their romance held audiences captive for four seasons and even inspired a spin-off, Velvet Collection , set in Barcelona.

Elite

Framed around the police investigation of the murder of a classmate in a glitzy Spanish private school, Élite made every one of its protagonists – from those working-class newcomers to the snobbish mean girls – possible suspects. Staging, in turn, probing conversations around wealth inequality, religion, and sexuality, this Netflix original was an immediate must-binge phenomenon that has somehow managed to keep its thrills and surprises fresh even after it resolved its first season mystery with a hell of an ending.

Money Heist

If “ Money Heist ” feels like an all too generic title, worry not, for Álex Pina’s Spanish drama is anything but generic. This timely heist is set in the Royal Mint of Spain, where an armed group of Dalí-masked anarchists are intent on printing and stealing €2.4 billion. As their hostage situation escalates, flashbacks flesh out the backstories of their heist and their code-named personas. Each subsequent season may have upped the stakes of this Antena 3-turned-Netflix series, but it’s kept its high-octane thrills intact.

El Marginal - O Cara de Fora

Prison dramas – from Oz and Prison Break to Orange is the New Black and Vis a vis – have long been staples of gritty, prestige TV. So it’s no surprise Argentina’s El marginal would strike gold. With its former-cop-goes-undercover-to-infiltrate-a-prison-gang premise during its first season, this Juan Minujín -starrer offered a high octane (and quite bloody) ride centered on a kidnapping plot that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. With its subsequent seasons, which have flashed back to give backstories on the various gangs that have strongholds on the San Onofre prison, El marginal has expanded its world, kept its storylines fresh and proven itself to be a binge-worthy watch.

Who Killed Sara?

The question at the heart of this buzzy Netflix series immediately alerts you to what kind of show you’re set to be obsessed with. It’s been 18 years and Álex Guzmán ( Manolo Cardona ) is finally free. He’s served his prison sentence and, despite having been framed for the murder of his sister Sara, he’s now intent on finding the real culprit behind her death. Oh, and seeking revenge, of course – all while finding himself attracted to a woman whose family wronged him all those years ago. The twists and turns in this Mexican drama are fast and furious, keeping you guessing all the way through its every thrilling episode.

Everything Will be Fine

(Photo by Natalia Bermudez / © Netflix 2021)

Everything Will Be Fine

Ruy ( Flavio Medina ) and Julia ( Lucía Uribe Bracho ) are separated. It’s clear their years together have brought them joys (and a daughter, in turn). But that time is long past them. Only, instead of breaking up their household, the two have opted to stay together. As in, they both continue to live under one roof and pretend, as much as they can, to still be a couple – for their daughter’s sake. Created and directed by Diego Luna, this satirical marital dramedy may not break new ground with its premise, but its leads are so winsome and charming that you can’t help but be won over.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre:  Dark comedy

“La casa de las flores” is one of the most popular shows for Spanish learners.

The de la Moras seem like a perfect family, but then it turns out that the father is having an affair—and his mistress commits suicide. This exposes a bigger secret: the father actually has a second family with the mistress.

On top of this, their kids have to deal with challenges like love triangles, accepting their sexuality and drug use, all set against a backdrop of dark humor and satire.

I watched this when I was still lower-intermediate in Spanish. One of the kids, Paulina, speaks very slowly, which makes for great listening practice.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Historical

  • Thousands of learner friendly videos (especially beginners)
  • Handpicked, organized, and annotated by FluentU's experts
  • Integrated into courses for beginners

For Castilian Spanish TV shows, don’t miss out on “Las chicas del cable,” which has six seasons.

Set in the 1920s to 1930s, it follows four women who work as telephone operators in Madrid. Lidia, one of the women, enters the company with a secret agenda, but her life soon takes an unexpected turn, including being torn between her first love and the telephone company owner’s son.

There are plenty of touching moments, and all of the women have their own compelling personalities.

Compared to other shows, it uses more polite forms of address like usted , señor and señora  because those were more common before.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre: Crime

Héctor Belascoarán Shayne is a one-eyed private investigator in Mexico City in the 1970’s. He used to be an engineer, but he decides to become a detective because he’s frustrated with corporate life.

His first cases involve diverse clients, eventually leading him into the darker underbelly of the city as he tackles murder and corruption.

I really like Belascoarán because he’s smart, witty and sometimes comical, and he’s portrayed by Luis Gerardo Méndez , who starred in “Club de Cuervos” and “Narcos: Mexico .”

This miniseries will help you get familiar with famous historical figures in Mexico like Luis Echeverría  and José José .

Country of Origin:  Mexico  Genre:  Comedy

Two women—Ana and Mariana—discover that their babies accidentally got switched with each other’s at the hospital. Since it’s already six months in, they agree on a solution: form a single, blended family.

This leads to funny scenarios because they have contrasting personalities. Ana is a well-off, organized and career-driven, while Mariana is a free-spirited, struggling musician. Even their parenting styles clash.

Both women, along with their families, go through plenty of adjustments, but then they have bonding moments too where they learn from each other.

It’s a cute, heartwarming show that’s pretty learner-friendly.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Crime

“La casa de papel” is one of the most well-known Spanish-language series on Netflix. After all, it has won a lot of awards, and it’s an unforgettable watch. I was kept on my toes by all of the sudden revelations, moral dilemmas and violent scenes.

It’s about a multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain, led by a mysterious man known as “The Professor.” He recruits eight people, who adopt city names as aliases, to carry out the ambitious plan to print billions of euros.

As a Spanish learner, you’ll be exposed to several accents because the characters come from all over Spain.

  • Go beyond just a superficial understanding

You’ve probably heard of the original “Narcos” series , which is one of the best Netflix drug dramas ever. “Narcos: Mexico” is Netflix’s newest release under the saga, and it explores the modern drug war’s roots in 1980’s Mexico.

Félix Gallardo, a former Sinaloan police officer, rises to power as a major drug lord who unifies several independent drug traffickers. Of course, there’s someone hunting him down: Kiki Camarena, a determined DEA agent.

The series features a mix of Spanish and English, but I recommend it over the original “Narcos” because the language is more authentic. Actors even improvised on the script!

Country of Origin:  Colombia Genre: Drama

Belky is a teenager with a troubled past: she was recruited as a child soldier by guerrillas in Colombia. She managed to escape and wants to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor, but adjusting to regular life isn’t that easy.

She struggles with PTSD from her violent past, along with being judged by her peers. Her family has to adjust because they thought she was dead, and they can sense that she has secrets she refuses to tell them.

The conversations are fairly realistic, but the characters here speak fast, especially since there’s a lot of drama and heavy emotion.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Action

  • FluentU builds you up, so you can build sentences on your own
  • Start with multiple-choice questions and advance through sentence building to producing your own output
  • Go from understanding to speaking in a natural progression.

The setting of “Vis a vis” is a women’s prison. Macarena is an accountant who’s wrongfully jailed because she was set up by her boss and lover. She enters the prison as a naive young woman, but she has to quickly adjust to the harsh realities of life there. To survive, she’s forced to become hardened and cunning.

It really delves into the backgrounds of the inmates, with fantastic character arcs. I adored Zulema, who’s one of the most dangerous women there.

The dialogues are fast-paced and emotionally charged, and the inmates often use slang, so try it out without subtitles if your Spanish is at upper-intermediate or above.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Comedy

Javier’s life seems to be going nowhere, but when he encounters an alien, he suddenly acquires superpowers.

At first, he’s clueless and clumsy about using his abilities like flight and super strength, which lands him in all sorts of funny situations. He refuses to tell his girlfriend too. Only his neighbor and friend, Jose, knows about it and helps him adjust to his new identity as a superhero.

It’s a wacky and lighthearted show with short episodes, and it got me laughing out loud. It’s also more approachable for Spanish learners because it uses simple, everyday language.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre: Drama

“El rey” is a biographical series that shows the life and career of Vicente Fernández . He’s an iconic Mexican singer who’s called “The King of Ranchera Music.”

  • Images, examples, video examples, and tips
  • Covering all the tricky edge cases, eg.: phrases, idioms, collocations, and separable verbs
  • No reliance on volunteers or open source dictionaries
  • 100,000+ hours spent by FluentU's team to create and maintain

spanish travel shows

The story begins with Vicente’s early life and how he tries to break into the industry. You’ll then get to see key moments in his career, including how he developed his unique style. As he became more famous, though, his relationship with his family becomes more strained.

If you’re interested in Mexican culture, this is a must-watch. His songs are helpful for learning Spanish because they’re so memorable, with clear pronunciation.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre: Thriller

This fun teen series reminded me of “Gossip Girl”—except it’s in Mexico.

A high school plunges into chaos when a hacker reveals that one of the most well-liked and beautiful students is actually trans. Later on, the hacker spills the secrets of other students too.

Luckily, there’s Sofia, who’s a bit of a loner but has awesome observation skills similar to Sherlock. She teams up with Javier, a new student with a mysterious past, to solve the mystery of who the hacker is.

You’ll hear tons of teen slang used in Mexican Spanish . For example, there’s chido , which means “cool” or “awesome.”

12. “Bolívar”

Country of Origin:  Colombia  Genre:  Historical

Simon Bolivar is a legendary historical figure in Latin America because he helped several countries become independent from the Spanish empire. Bolivia was named after him!

spanish travel shows

This series chronicles his tumultuous and passionate life, starting from his childhood and his travels to Europe as a young man. He then grows to become a revolutionary leader, going on military campaigns across the continent. There’s a bit of personal drama too—his romantic relationships and inner struggles are intimately explored.

It clocks in at more than 60 episodes, but it’s entertaining all throughout, and you’ll learn a lot about Latin American history.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre: Horror

Elvis Infante is a charismatic and skilled diablero , meaning he can hunt and fight demons that roam the earth. He’s not alone, though—he’s joined by his sister Keta, a nurse who knows all about herbal medicine, and Ramiro, a priest. Along the way, they meet Nancy, who has a mysterious ability to control demons.

Throughout the series, the group faces all sorts of demonic entities and venture into otherworldly realms. I found it fascinating because it draws heavily from Mexican culture and folklore as well as Catholicism. Characters use Náhuatl , the language of the Aztec Empire, for the spiritual chants.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Thriller

Gloria, a single mother, moves with her family to a new neighborhood that seems welcoming at first. But as the series progresses, it’s gradually revealed that the family has a dark and troubling history.

A central theme here is the complexity of a mother’s love, which is compared to a scorpion’s tail that’s sinister and poisonous.

The acting is especially brilliant, with Najwa Nimri portraying Gloria. She also shows up in two other shows listed here (I’m a fan!): “Vis a vis” and “La casa de papel.”

While the plot can get complicated, the language used is conversational with mostly standard accents since it’s set in Madrid.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre: Sci-fi

I got déjà vu watching “ La valla” because it’s about a pandemic and it echoes real-life situations that we went through, including masks and lockdowns. It was finished in 2019 before the COVID pandemic started, which makes it even more uncanny.

It portrays Madrid in 2045 as a dystopian society where resources are scarce. Two siblings, Sara and Hugo, get separated because the government wants to study Sarah’s genes, which might hold the key to curing a widespread virus. Sara’s family then goes on a desperate mission to rescue her.

You can pick up vocabulary here that became more widespread because of COVID, like cuarentena (quarantine) and epidemia (epidemic).

This show was created by Álex Pina , who was  behind “La casa de papel” and “Vis a vis ” as well, so you know right away it’s action-packed and a little crazy.

Three women, Carol, Wendy and Gina, work at a brothel, but they then decide to make a desperate and violent escape when they couldn’t take the abuse anymore. Romeo, the brothel owner, is obsessed with capturing them, and the girls continue on the run as it becomes a dangerous cat-and-mouse chase.

What’s cool is the main characters have different Spanish accents on purpose because the actresses come from different countries—Spain, Argentina and Cuba.

Country of Origin:  Mexico Genre: Action

“La Reina del Sur” is based on the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte . I adore this series because it’s a story about survival and ambition.

Teresa Mendoza lives a modest life in Sinaloa, Mexico, but then her boyfriend, a member of a drug cartel, is murdered. Forced to flee for her safety, Teresa ends up in Spain. Here, she starts from the bottom, but through resourcefulness and strategic thinking, she climbs the ranks to become a powerful drug trafficker.

Because of the diverse settings, the show features a variety of Spanish dialects.

There’s a US-made version of the series called “Queen of the South.”

Country of Origin:  Colombia Genre:  Action

“Distrito salvaje” is another Colombian crime series that involves guerilla fighters, but it’s grittier and much more action-focused than “La niña.”

Jhon, a former guerrilla fighter, moves back to Bogotá after a peace treaty. He tries to adapt to civilian life and reconnect with his estranged family, but he gets drawn back into violence and espionage when the Colombian government recruits him as an informant.

As he’s tasked with investigating criminal organizations, he uncovers corruption and betrayal within the government ranks as well.

You’ll notice that in Colombian Spanish , usted is used a lot more, even when talking casually to friends and family.

Country of Origin:  Argentina Genre:  Crime

Another prison show that you can’t miss out on would be “ El marginal.”

Miguel Palacios, a former police officer, is sent to a prison in Buenos Aires under a false identity. His goal is to infiltrate a gang and get information about the kidnapping of a judge’s daughter.

Inside the prison, he soon discovers a complex prison hierarchy that’s controlled by multiple factions. His mission then gets more complicated as he gets involved in the prison’s internal politics and conflicts.

Argentinian Spanish sounds distinct from other Spanish dialects. You’ll hear lunfardo here or street slang, like chorro for thieves or criminals and yuta for police.

Country of Origin:  Spain Genre:  Mystery

Two sisters are aboard a luxury ocean liner traveling from Spain to Brazil in the late 1940s. But then a woman gets mysteriously thrown overboard, and nobody can figure out what’s happening.

The sisters, along with the ship’s first officer, start investigating the crime. All throughout, people are dressed luxuriously and the scenery is breathtaking—it’s a visual feast.

Each of the show’s three seasons features a new mystery. The second and third seasons involve ghosts and a virus being brought on board.

I would recommend this to learners who are just starting out with Spanish shows because there’s less slang and the characters are easier to understand.

Since even one series on Netflix can require several hours of watching, with plenty of slang thrown in, I recommend diving into these when you’re at least lower intermediate (or B1) in Spanish. This way, you can watch directly with Spanish subtitles.

If the amount of new vocabulary gets overwhelming, practice with movies first, kids’ shows in Spanish , or even YouTube videos to build up your listening skills. For instance, a program like FluentU gives you a great base for watching full-blown Spanish series.

Once you’re ready to get into Spanish shows, try out relatable genres first like modern dramas and comedies and stick with the main Spanish variation that you’re studying, like Castilian , Mexican or Colombian Spanish .

What I do is I try to understand every word, checking the subtitles if I can’t make sense of them, then save words that keep popping up into flashcards . This might sound time-consuming, but you’ll get faster as you continue with the series since the vocabulary often gets repeated.

Watching shows on Netflix can be an addictive hobby, which is why harnessing it for learning Spanish can get you far.

These Spanish-language Netflix shows are so good that in no time, you'll forget about any language barriers . So, vamos! There's a lot of TV to watch.

The Cook of Castamar

netflix

The Cook of Castamar is like the Spanish-language, suspense-filled Bridgerton you've been waiting for. The series is set within the aristocracy of 1720 Madrid, where a new cook is hired within the household of a dashing and widowed duke.

Somebody Has to Die (Alguien Tiene Que Morir)

c

If you're looking for a quick but gripping watch, start with this three-episode mystery set in 1950s Spain, under Francisco Franco's dictatorship. After 10 years in Mexico, Gabino (Alejandro Speitzer) returns home to Spain, unaware that his parents have arranged his marriage to Cayetana (Ester Expósito of Elite ). Underneath the characters' perfectly coiffed exteriors bubbles tension about who they really are—and who the conservative society doesn't allow them to be.

Daughter From Another Mother (Madre Solo hay Dos)

Normally, Mariana (Paulina Goto), a free-spirited college student, and Ana (Luwdika Paleta), never would have crossed paths—but then, their baby girls were switched at birth. Now, they have to make their unusual family arrangement work. Daughter From Another Mother is a laugh-out-loud comedy about people in a worse-case-scenario scenario. Goto and Paleta's genuine chemistry comes through, even with subtitles.

Stolen Away (Perdida)

Stolen Away is a thriller with an unusual premise: A man goes to extreme lengths with the goal of ending up in prison. Only there, in the depths of a Colombian prison, does Antonio (Daniel Grao) believe he can learn what happened to his daughter, who was kidnapped years prior.

Fans of Queen Sugar, Empire , or even Succession are sure to enjoy the Carranza family dynamics in Monarca , a drama about a family at the helm of a tequila empire. Ana María (Irene Azuela) returns to Mexico to take charge of a billion-dollar business, only to fight with her two brothers over the company's direction. Betrayal, blackmail, revenge, and corruption ensue in the series, produced by Salma Hayek.

From the creator of Money Heist comes yet another Spain-set show with a high-octane plot. Coral (Verónica Sánchez), Wendy (Lali Espósito), and Gina (Yany Prado) are on the run from the strip club after nearly murdering their maniacal boss–we meant what we said about the show being "high octane." Sky Rojo 's vibrant, intense half-hour episodes all end in a cliff-hanger.

High Seas (Alta Mar)

Alta Mar has everything an Agatha Christie fan could want in a series: a luxurious confined setting, glamorous clothing, and one juicy whodunnit. In Alta Mar , the passengers on an ocean liner bound for Brazil become consumed with one mystery after another, including a person thrown overboard. The show's main characters, two sisters, are stuck on that boat for weeks—and sleuthing is one way to pass the time.

Who Killed Sara

Who Killed Sara? has the central mystery embedded into the title. If you're new to the series, expect a lot of plot twists as Alex (Manolo Cardona), upon his release from prison, seeks answers from the Lazcano crime family that framed him for his own sister's murder 18 years ago.

Nailed It: Mexico

Nailed It is Netflix's baking show franchise that celebrates kitchen experimentation...and mishaps. In the series, which had a Mexican spinoff back in 2019, amateur bakers are challenged to make cakes based on elaborate designs.

Dark Desire (Oscuro Deseo)

This alluring series out of Mexico is often described as You meets 365 Days , and for good reason. Dark Desire centers on Alma (Maite Perroni—who many viewers might recognize from the cult favorite telenovela Rebelde ), a married woman who enters into an affair with the mysterious hot 20-something, Darío (Alejandro Speitzer). But quickly, we learn Darío's passion for Alma is more like an obsession—and the sexy story quickly turns into a thriller with more plot twists and irresistible sex scenes than you'll be able to count.

Even the most action-loving viewers need a lighthearted watch every once in awhile, and Valeria is exactly that . As I like to put it, this series is like if Sex and the City, Girls , and Bridget Jones had a baby...in Madrid, Spain. You'll love getting to know the titular character, Valeria, an aspiring novelist who finds her life derailed by an unexpected love triangle. And of course, there to support her are her very own Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, although in this case, the squad is Carmen, Lola, and Nerea—each just as lovable in their own right. Watch Now

White Lines

Okay, so White Lines is actually a bilingual series that switches back and forth between English and Spanish. The latest from La Casa de Papel creator Alex Pina , this mystery is set on the Spanish island of Ibiza. Across 10 episodes, the drama dives into a decades-old case to find the killer of Axel Collins (Tom Rhys Harries), a Manchester-born D.J. who made a name for himself on Ibiza's club scene in the '90s. At the beginning of the series, we meet Alex's sister, Zoe Collins, (Laura Haddock) as she travels to Ibiza to find the truth.

Locked Up (Vis a Vis)

In 2017, Vis a Vis —or Locked Up, in English debuted on local Spanish television. Centered on Macarena, a woman who falls in love with her manipulative boss and commits crimes because of him, the series follows her journey to prison—and the other female inmates she meets. Starring Maggie Civantos and an ensemble cast including La Casa de Papel 's Alba Flores , the series was picked up by Netflix and became an international hit for five seasons. Last year, a spinoff was announced: Vis a vis: El oasis (aka Locked Up ), described as a "final showdown" that premiered in 2020.

Toy Boy is a cult favorite, both thanks to its addicting murder mystery plotline and the eye candy its four stars offer viewers. The drama series follows group of four male strippers working in the affluent, seaside vacation city of Marbella, Spain. Nicknamed "toy boys" because they mostly work for older women. The plot centers on main character, Hugo Beltrán (played by newcomer actor Jesús Mosquera) after he's released from jail for a murder he didn't commit—and the following story about sex, love, mystery, and intrigue, all set in a glamorous beach town in Spain, is the kind of guilty pleasure that is meant for binge-watching. Watch Now

Money Heist (La Casa de Papel)

A mysterious man known as "The Professor" helps train a dozen young, money-hungry criminals to pull off the largest bank heist in history. Hooked yet? I was, especially when the series somehow managed to keep me on the edge of my seat with a show set almost entirely in one location, the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. But don't worry, Money Heist isn't all action, no fun: There are quite a few love stories here, and fans of Élite will notice a few familiar faces in this cast.

Ah, Elite . Just in case the darkly alluring story of a spoiled rich girl in the middle of a love triangle at an exclusive private school in Spain isn't enough for you, there's also a mysterious unsolved murder—and plenty of clutch-your-pearls sex scenes. If you do join the more than 20 million households around the world that became instant fans of Netflix's glossy teen drama, you'll be happy to know that a sixth season is on the way. Watch Now

House of Flowers (La Casa de Las Flores)

With the fast pace of TV and the internet, these days it takes a lot to make me actually LOL. But Netflix's dramedy novela centered on a Mexican family and their flower shop is the wittiest show I've seen in a long time. You'll be able to relate to the family drama (and become obsessed with matriarch Virginia de la Mora, portrayed by novela legend Verónica Castro). But you'll also laugh at the outrageousness of it all, including the dramatically slow-paced voice of eldest sister Paulina, which is so distinct—and hilarious—that Netflix asked actress Cecilia Suárez not to use her accent for any other character.

Cable Girls (Las Chicas del Cable)

After racing through my must-watch list one Saturday afternoon, I meandered through Netflix's recommendations and stumbled across this gem—and immediately wondered how I didn't know about Las Chicas del Cable sooner. Set in 1920's Spain, four young women begin working as phone operators at one of the world's first modern telecommunications companies. As some of their generation's early crops of working women, each fights for independence—one while trying to escape her dark past, all while wearing dazzling roaring twenties fashion.

Made in Mexico

Take The Real Housewives and The Hills to Mexico City, and you've got the reality show Made in Mexico . Okay, I'm using the word reality lightly here, as the show's plotlines are clearly manufactured. And the series faced plenty of backlash thanks to its lack of diversity. But if you're looking for a mindless guilty pleasure, this will do the trick—especially with characters like eternal bachelor Roby, who ends up in an epic feud with Hanna, a Blair Waldorf-wannabe with political and fashion designer aspirations. Yup, the stuff of reality TV dreams.

Alright, so this is one I probably don't need to tell you about, because Narcos , the series based on the life of the infamous druglord Pablo Escobar was everywhere when it debuted in 2016. And there was a reason: The creators' careful balance of Escobar's horrific crimes and his personal life as a Robin Hood with a family almost makes you see his human side. (Almost.) And the story goes beyond Escobar: Season 3 introduced the Cali Cartel, who took over the Colombian drug trade after Escobar's death, and the latest season dives into Mexico in the '80s and '90s — with some appearances from a few faces you'll recognize from Escobar's era.

'Elite' cast members

Some are wildly popular; some are hidden gems.

There should be a support group for people overwhelmed by the amount of content available on Netflix. The streamer has something for pretty much everyone, but you have to be able to narrow down what you're interested in — and you have to know where to look. For example, you may not know there are a ton of Spanish-language shows on Netflix that you can watch right now. Some are popular hits, while others may not be on your radar (yet); either way, they're worth checking out ASAP. Oh, and if you don't speak the language, there's always the subtitles option.

Just like with English-language shows, there are Spanish-language options in every genre on Netflix. If you're a fan of drama, Narcos might be up your alley. If you prefer something lighthearted, check out Go! Live Your Way, which documents a teen's life at a performing arts school. If want to watch a classic telenovela, you can check out Silvana Sin Lana, which is about a woman who loses everything when her fugitive husband flees the country. Basically, whatever you're into, Netflix probably has a Spanish-language show for you.

Here's a list of 25 great Spanish-language shows on Netflix to get you started:

Puerta 7 is basically a cross between Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad . The Argentinian crime thriller centers on football fans who deal drugs at matches, but often have to deal with the fatal fallout. In other words, it’s a far cry from the wholesome sports antics of Ted Lasso .

All episodes of Silvana Sin Lana are streaming on Netflix .

13 Spanish-Language TV Shows on Netflix to Stream Now

You've already binged all four seasons of Money Heist. What next?

spanish language tv shows on netflix

Before the French hit Lupin became a global sensation, for three years Spain's Money Heist held onto the record for most-watched non-English-language title on Netflix. And for good reason. The series, now heading into its fifth season (which will drop on the streaming giant in two parts, the first on September 3, and the second on December 3) has been a critical and ratings darling since its debut in 2017, praised for a gripping storyline, emotional complexity, and a great ensemble cast. (The show took home an International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2018.)

The House of Flowers

The House of Flowers

This beloved Mexican black comedy-drama revolves around the wealthy de la Moras, whose picture-perfect flower business hides the fact that they're a highly dysfunctional family (affairs, secret children, betrayal, hidden businesses, etc). Praised for its satirical take on the telenovela, and for featuring LBGT characters and subverting stereotypes,  The House of Flowers  ran for three seasons. A movie spinoff,  The House of Flowers: The Movie , premieres tomorrow on Netflix.

Money Heist

Money Heist

The show to credit with tuning the rest of the world in to just how much fantastic content can be found internationally,  Money Heist  will return later this year for its fifth and final season. For the uninitiated, it's about a mysterious criminal mastermind who calls himself "The Professor," and who recruits a motley group of small time criminals to pull off two major heists: one on the Royal Mint of Spain and the other on the Bank of Spain. It's supposed to be a perfect plan, until human error—and emotion—get in the way.

Elite

The dramatic, cliquey, and catty microcosm of rich private school kids is a universally enticing subject matter. Take this Spanish teen thriller, whose fourth season dropped on Netflix last week (a fifth is planned for 2022). It has all the elements of a winning  Gossip Girl- esque formula: fun fashion, class divides, extreme wealth. Add in murder plots and it'll be near impossible to stop binging.

Who Killed Sara?

Who Killed Sara?

When it comes to Netflix success, if  Money Heist  is Spain's crown jewel and  Lupin  is France's, then  Who Killed Sara?  is Mexico's most popular offering on the streaming giant (it was watched by 55 million households in its first 28 days). This gripping whodunnit follows one man's quest for revenge against members of the billionaire Lazcano family, who framed him for the murder of his sister (the titular Sara) and had him sent to prison for 18 years. The first two seasons were released in March and May of this year, and, lucky for fans of the show, a third is forthcoming.

Sky Rojo

Created by Alex Pina, mastermind of  Money Heist , Sky Rojo  is an action thriller about three prostitutes on the run from their pimp and his dangerous henchmen. The first season premiered in March and the second will drop on Netflix next month (July 23).

Toy Boy

Think of  Toy Boy —which centers on, among other things, the world of male strippers—as all the guilty pleasures of Magic Mike , but with a much darker twist: murder, revenge, betrayal. The basic premise: a young stripper named Hugo wakes up on a sailboat after a night of hard-partying to find himself next to the dead body of his lover's husband. After a stint in jail for the crime, which he didn't commit, Hugo embarks on a quest to find out who framed him.

Club of Crows

Club of Crows

The owner of a Mexican football club abruptly passes away, leading to a dramatic power struggle between his children over who is better equipped to lead the team. Both hilarious and heartwarming,  Club of Crows  will satiate any devoted fans of  Ted Lasso .

Someone Has to Die

Someone Has to Die

Set in 1950s Spain under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, this Spanish thriller centers on the scion of a wealthy family, who returns home after a decade abroad in Mexico to find out his parents have arranged for his marriage to the daughter of another rich family. But he has brought along a male ballet dancer "friend" from Mexico and must hide his true sexuality from his ultra-conservative world. The suspenseful title is enough to hold your interest, plus the limited series is only three episodes—in other words, an easy Sunday afternoon binge.

High Seas

Think Murder on the Orient Express , but set in the 1940s and on a luxury cruise liner  en route from Spain to Rio. At the center of  High Seas are  two sisters, grieving the recent death of their father, who soon find themselves implicated in mysterious happenings on board, from murder and suspicious suicides, to hidden Nazi gold.

Daughter From Another Mother

Daughter From Another Mother

In this Mexican comedy, the worlds of two very different women collide when they realize their 4-month-old newborn daughters had been accidentally switched at birth. Their logical solution? To combine households and live together as one big family.

Valeria

Billed as a Spanish  Sex and the City , this comedy is about an aspiring novelist, Valeria, who lives in a fabulous apartment (naturally), deals with love trouble, and, of course, gets through it all thanks to her own versions of Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte.

White Lines

White Lines

This British-Spanish bilingual production takes place on Ibiza and follows a woman's quest to find out who murdered her famous D.J. brother. As its title suggests, though, it doesn't take long for her to fall prey to the island's dangerous temptations.

Locked Up

A woman ends up in jail for committing white collar crimes and needs to adjust quickly to—and survive in—her new environment of dangerous inmates and corrupt law enforcement officials. Despite its obvious  Orange Is the New Black  premise,  Locked Up  has a decidedly more serious bent.

10+ Spanish Series on Hulu, HBO, and Apple TV-Watch Now

the pier spanish series on hulu

There are many great Spanish series on Hulu , HBO Max, and Apple TV and in this blog post I’ll introduce you to some of the best ones. Whether you’re a foreign film lover or someone who is learning Spanish, these Spanish shows will entertain you while also contributing to your Spanish language learning and vocabulary retention!

A few things to note about Spanish series on Hulu :

If you’ve been wondering ‘does Hulu have Spanish shows?’, yes! They do.

If you’re next question is ‘Does Hulu have Spanish audio for non-Spanish shows?’ The answer is usually no, if you’re watching Hulu in an English-speaking country. The audio is normally only available in the original language unless you are in a country that dubs most foreign language content (the U.S. isn’t currently one of those countries). Hulu Live TV-Stream Spanish TV:

1) If you are a Live TV subscriber your subscription may include access to live content in Spanish through Telemundo. In the Hulu app, go to Hubs > Scroll down to A-Z and look for Telemundo, or type in “Telemundo” in the Search menu. BEWARE: A lot of the Spanish series on Hulu’s Telemundo will be soap operas/telenovelas so if this isn’t your thing you’re actually better off just typing ‘Spanish’ into Hulu’s search bar and trying to find series/movies on your own.

2) As a Live TV subscriber, you also have the option of adding the Español Add-on to watch live and on-demand content from select Spanish-language networks. If you have the add-on, access these channels by heading to Hubs > Scroll down to the Español Add-on.

1. Acapulco (Apple TV)

This charming Spanish show on AppleTV is equal parts late 80s spoof, comedy, and romantic comedy and I love it! They nailed the right balance between kitschy and ridiculous (check out the dramatic pool-side singers who sing 80s cover tunes while dressed in ridiculously bad late 80s fashion for a real laugh) and fun/funny/entertaining. In my opinion, it’s one of the best Spanish shows on Apple TV+.

learn spanish

The show is focused on the main character Maximo, a young man from a poor neighborhood in Mexico who has dreamed for his entire life of working at the uber-fancy hotel and resort near his home in Acapulco. Especially once he realizes (as a young child) that a man from his own neighborhood is the manager/director there.

The main story in Acapulco is that of a young man who has stars in his eyes and believes that getting a job at this hotel will change his life, for the better, and offer him (and his family) opportunities beyond his wildest dreams, as well as that of love. The story is told by future (older) Maximo as he looks back on his life at the resort, but most of the show happens in the past so it doesn’t feel weird.

2. El Jardin de Bronce (HBO)

El Jardín de Bronce, based on the best-selling novel by Gustavo Malajovich, is an HBO Latino  Spanish language  series filmed in Argentina starring two of my favorite Argentinean actors, Joaquín Furriel (un hombre quien es MUY guapo) and Julieta Zylberberg.

The series follows architect Fabián Danubio’s desperate struggle to find his four-year-old daughter after she mysteriously disappears in the middle of the day with her nanny. All Fabian knows, is that she had mentioned a ‘man in the garden’ a couple of weeks previously and thought she was talking about someone on TV but later, realized she might have actually seen a man in the garden outside their apartment. This series goes in directions you would never expect, including some uncomfortably dark and twisted directions but it never descends into gore or any extreme violence. It’s gripping and suspenseful, the acting is very good, and the different seasons connect in ways you wouldn’t initially guess.

learn spanish rosetta stone

Faced with a police force that lacks focus and a sense of urgency, Fabián despairs, especially as more tragedy continues to strike immediately after his daughter’s disappearance. At his absolute lowest moment, however, a private investigator contacts him with a message of hope. This is where the series gets more rewarding and exciting, as the search for his daughter, with the help of this investigator, becomes the sole purpose of Fabián’s life.

An excellent, suspenseful series with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes and a surprising ending.

3. El Hipnotizador (HBO)

El Hipnotizador is the tale of Arenas, a hypnotist who can put people into a trance and elicit their most secret desires. He’s an enigma wrapped in secrecy and loneliness, an alienated man with no relief from his own insomnia, who is hiding a terrible secret. In this dramatic magical series, Arenas faces off with his archenemy, another hypnotist, engaging in a great battle where there are two sides that seem to represent good and evil.

The Hypnotist is an eight-episode series based on a comic book history by Argentine Pablo de Santis, created by Juan Sáenz Valiente and illustrated.

Isabel spanish series HBO

4. Isabel (HBO) *Watch on HBO or Hulu

This series focuses on the life of famous Chilean author Isabel Allende portrays the life of a woman who had to fight long and hard for her rights and the love of her family. Spanning decades of Allende’s life, Isabel takes us back to Isabel’s childhood and then through her years as a young wife, mother, and employee at a magazine/newspaper in Chile where she got her first taste of writing and editing. Due to an increasingly troubling political climate after Salvador Allende was overthrown (Isabel’s father was a first cousin to the Chilean president), Isabel found herself on the Chilean government’s hit list and fled to Venezuela, where her young children and husband later joined her.

learn spanish for adults

It was in Venezuela where she wrote her first major novel, The House of the Spirits in 1982. Over the ensuing decades, she published dozens of books and became the most-read Spanish author in the world. This is a  fascinating series  that gives a deeper look into the life of this unique and powerful female author.

spanish crime series starring rosie perez on Apple TV

5. Now and Then (Apple TV)

Starring Marina de Tavira, Maribel Verdú, and Rosie Perez this Spanish series on Apple TV focuses on a group of friends who reunite for the first time in twenty years at a college reunion in Miami. As the first few episodes unfold, a dark secret from the past that connects all of them is revealed as the group comes together to figure out who is blackmailing them and why whoever the blackmailer is, has waited twenty years. Youthful romances are rekindled, past grudges unearthed, and careers and marriages are put at risk. What will happen? You’ll have to watch to find out.

I love Rosie Perez as the tough-as-nails cop who’s got something to prove in this series. I’m also a big fan of Maribel Verdú who has starred in a lot of different Spanish films and series over the past 20 years including internationally renowned films like  Y Tu Mama Tambien . Season 2 of Now and Then is slated to be released sometime in 2023.

the pier spanish series on hulu

6. The Pier (Hulu)

This Spanish series  on Hulu  is produced by Telecinco and tells the story of a group of friends who grew up together on the same pier in Barcelona. After years apart, they all return to the pier for one final summer before their lives take them in different directions.

The show is full of nostalgia and captures the beauty (and drama) of friendships that are formed in childhood. It’s a good one to watch if you are looking for something a bit more light-hearted.

7. Capadocia (HBO)

This  Spanish-language series  on  HBO MAX  is based in Mexico City. The show follows Miguel Ángel Capadocia (Francisco de la O), a famous chef who returns to his hometown after living in Italy for 20 years. After arriving, he discovers many secrets about the people closest to him and is forced to confront them with everything he’s learned abroad about life, family relationships, food…and love.

8. Dani Who? (Hulu)

A teenage girl goes missing, and a bunch of her classmates decides to figure out what happened to her. This  thriller series  involves mystery, drama, and supernatural abilities. Who can they trust when allies end up being enemies, and they find out they’ve all been under surveillance? Drama, intrigue, suspense, and surprises ensue. Will they ever find out what happened to Dani? You’ll have to watch to find out. Find this Spanish series  on Hulu .

9. DIOS, Inc. (HBO)

This  Spanish series  is produced by HBO Latin America and tells the story of four friends who, after a series of coincidences, open their own company: Dios, Inc. They’re convinced that they have what it takes to make it big in the business world, but quickly learn that things are not always as they seem.

10. Dolores: The Truth About the Wanninkhof Case (HBO Max)

This Spanish-language series is produced by  HBO  and tells the true story of a Dutch family who moved to Spain in the early 1970s. The Wanninkhofs were an upper-class family who thought they could escape their past by moving to a new country, but they were wrong.

The show follows the events that led to the death of the family’s patriarch, Dirk Wanninkhof, and the subsequent trial that captured the attention of Spain and the Netherlands. It’s a fascinating (and true) story with plenty of drama!

10 Spanish TV Shows to Learn Spanish

Spanish TV Shows

One of the best ways to learn a language is through hearing it spoken by natives. What better way to hear a language than through TV?

Watching Spanish TV can help you not only acquire more vocabulary and become familiar with the pronunciation and grammar, but also give you a little insight into the culture. So, here is a list of 10 Spanish TV shows you can watch to learn, develop, and take your Spanish to the next level!

It might seem silly, but some of the best shows for beginner level students are game shows. The questions are usually written out on the bottom of the screen, so you will not only hear the pronunciation, but also be able to see what they’re asking.

In addition, the questions consist of a definition-term type set up. So, this will really help you acquire not only the word itself, but other words that you can associate with it. And, even if your Spanish is at a more advanced level, these shows will still be great ways to acquire more vocabulary, and learn some interesting trivia at the same time.

1 . Ahora Caigo (beginner to intermediate)

Spanish TV Shows

Via Teleprograma

Meaning “now I fall” Ahora Caigo takes trivia game shows to the next level! With an eccentric, off-the-wall energetic host, the show is non-stop entertainment. Contestants are placed on round platforms surrounding the center stage, where the main player is also positioned on a platform of their own.

The game follows a pretty typical question and answer format, with trivia ranging from music, TV, movies, to geography, history, and everything in between. The catch? If you get an answer wrong, the platform under you will open up, and you fall through a trap door!

Running time: 45 minutes

Number of seasons: 5 and still going!

2. Pasapalabra (intermediate to advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

Via Telecinco

This show has become a backbone of Spanish television entertainment. There are two main phases to the game:

  • In the first, contestants battle on teams to earn seconds. They participate in various games, and fun ensues throughout.
  • In the second phase of the competition, participants move to what is called “el rosco” using their previously won seconds to answer the questions.

“Rosco” means “doughnut.” This part of the game gets its name because contestants must go through the alphabet (illustrated in the shape of a circle, hence the name) providing the term that starts with the letter and correctly fits the definition given by the host.

A lot of the vocabulary can be a little more complicated, even stumping the Spanish contestants. So, if you find yourself scratching your head in confusion, don’t feel bad!

Running time: 43 minutes

Number of Seasons: 15 and still going!

3. Lo sabe, no lo sabe (beginner to intermediate)

Spanish TV Shows

Via Vertele

This show puts a big twist on the typical trivia game shows we’re all so familiar with. Taking place in various cities around Spain, the presenter will pick a random person off the street to participate in the game.

The twist comes, however, when the contestant doesn’t have to actually answer the questions. Instead, they have to choose some random passerby and decide if they will know (lo sabe) or won’t know (no lo sabe) the answer to the question.

Number of seasons: 3

4. El hormiguero (advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

Via Flooxer

Everyone loves a good late night talk show. They’re usually filled with celebrities, music, and a lot of humor. Well, El hormiguero (“The Anthill”) has all of that and more!

Take your typical idea of a talk show add in a few stuffed ants, a crazy presenter, some random stunts, and a whole lot of antics and you have El Hormiguero. Guest celebrities range from Spanish actors and singers, to some very big, well-known international stars as well (Cameron Diaz, Daniel Radcliff, Justin Timberlake just to name a few!)

There is no shortage of laughs on this show! Although many guests don’t speak Spanish, the dialogue and vocabulary still holds a very colloquial feel. The jokes fly fast, and the banter is constant, so this show is recommended for more advanced learners.

Running time: 50 minutes

Number of seasons: 9 and still going!

One of the best ways to learn about the culture of a country is through seeing what aspects of its society are predominent enough to turn them into a sitcom! Sitcoms are meant to make the public laugh at themselves, so keep that in mind when watching the following shows. They are meant to over-exaggerate certain elements of Spanish life.

5. Aquí no hay quien viva (intermediate to advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

What happens when you put a bunch of people, all with very different lifestyles and mindsets, into one apartment building? Well, Aquí no hay quien viva (“No one could live here”) attempts to answer that question.

With a wide range of characters from the nosey older women who live upstairs, to the constantly flustered and frazzled president of the community, to the zaney doorman and his even zanier dad, the cast is filled with just the right mix of personalities to keep the story bouncing back and forth from one conflict to the next.

Running time: 90 minutes

This slang e-book will help you understand colloquial expressions in TV shows.

6. La que se avecina (advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

Via ClaudioSerrano

If you like “Aquí no hay quien viva” you’re bound to like “La que se avecina” (translated to English as “What’s yet to come”)! This show is a spin off of the other, with many of the same actors, and a similar, if not identical, plot.

Following the lives of the inhabitants of a luxury block of apartments, the conflict, and humor, comes from the interactions between the building’s tenants. This show is a little more brazen with some of the off the wall humor as the characters often find themselves in embarrassing and uncomfortable predicaments.

Comedic relief is still the main goal of the show, and laughs are not hard to come by when watching any given episode. The quick dialogue and regular use of slang and colloquial speech make it a little more difficult to follow.

Running time: 70-90 minutes, depending on the episode

7. Gym Tony (advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

Focused around the happenings in one of the local gyms, “Gym Tony” is filled with exaggerated problems and hilarious solutions. With a penny-pinching owner and a less than perfect staff, the gym seems to be the place where clients both find and bring their dilemmas, which range between relationships, fitness, money, and everything and anything in between.

Whether it’s the couple that is always fighting, the wannabe actress, or the workout junkie obsessed with his appearance, watching the over-the-top characters try to work their way through their day-to-day lives is sure to leave you wanting to see where their next misadventure will lead them.

Running time: 70 minutes

Number of seasons: 3 and still going!

Everyone loves a good drama! The shows that keep you guessing what will happen next, and draw you into the lives of the characters. Well, Spanish dramas will surely do all of that, and help you learn the language and culture along the way.

8. Gran Hotel (intermediate)

Spanish TV Shows

Via lacatarina

Set during the early 20th century, this show is every romance, drama, history lover’s dream come true. With plot lines that are always changing, and family histories that seem to become more complex the more they unfold, you never know where the show will take you.

The main storyline revolves around the the owner of a high-end hotel, her children, and their interactions with the “help.” This makes for some really great drama when romances spark—between pretty much everyone! Filled with star-crossed love stories, revenge, and secrets this show will surely keep you coming back for more (if you can resist the urge to binge-watch the whole thing in one weekend).

This show doesn’t have a lot of colloquial language or slang in it, due to the era in which it is set, making it perfect for the intermediate learner.

Running time: 70-80 minutes

9. El Tiempo Entre Costuras (intermediate to advanced)

Spanish TV Shows

Another historical drama, this show is set in the early to mid 20th Century. An adaptation of a novel with the same title written by María Dueñas, El Tiempo Entre Costuras (translated into English as “The Time in Between” or “The Time Between Seams”) this show follows a young seamstress as she establishes a life which will quickly come unraveled around her.

With the Spanish Civil War brewing in the background, Sira is forced to choose between the man she loves and the life she has built for herself. Filled with passion and intrigue this show not only entertains, but also gives the viewer a little lesson in history, as the Civil War and WWII both play major roles in the development of the character’s life.

Number of Seasons: 1

Children’s show

10.  violetta (beginner).

Spanish TV Shows

Via DisneyChannel

Although this show doesn’t take place in Spain, it’s popularity among Spanish children is massive. Set in Argentina, the show follows a young, talented singer as she transitions back to living in her home country after spending a few years in Europe.

Facing the typical struggles that plague all teenagers, Violetta attempts to deal with her problems with the help of her friends and family along the way. An endearing and family-friendly series, Violetta is not only heart-warming but also entertaining, and the level of Spanish makes it accessible to all learners.

No matter what you like to watch, Spanish TV has something to offer everyone. So, sit back, relax, and let yourself get swept away in the drama that is Gran Hotel, laugh till your sides hurt with the characters of Aquí no hay Quien Viva, or catch up on pop culture with El Hormiguero. You’ll not only be entertained, but your Spanish will surely improve!

About the author

Anastasia is a Chicago, Illinois native. She began studying Spanish over 10 years ago, and hasn’t stopped since. Living in Spain since 2012, she loves Spanish tortilla, vino tinto, and anything that contains jamón ibérico.

¡Hola Anastasia! I read your article, I found that you have missed two telenovelas. Cuéntame cómo te pasó is also one of the best series. I am in B1 now and it is really suitable for intermediates. Although it is quite big 18 seasons but the show is very good. You can add it in your list. Also the theme song is very lovely, after a show you will keep humming this song.

One more is Isabella, which is a period tv series, about the queen Isabella of Spain. This is alao quite interesting but it is generally for the advanced level because the script is quite ancient. So I have just suggested you two tele series.

Adiós. Hasta luego

I know this article is old but do you know how I can watch Violetta in the US? It is no longer on Netflix.

I am not sure. It is owned by Disney and you can imagine they will have it on their future netflix-like. See here. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-40866565 Just wait until 2019 perhaps. 🙂

Netflix Is King When It Comes to Spanish-Language Content | Charts

Netflix has focused on producing and acquiring content from Spanish-speaking countries, while Peacock’s Spanish-language catalog consists primarily of U.S. productions

Parrot Analytics

The Spanish language holds a significant presence in the U.S. streaming landscape. As of the first quarter of 2024, Spanish was the foreign language with the highest number of movies available on SVOD platforms in the U.S. and the No. 3 language when it comes to the number of shows available, following Korean and Japanese.

This prominence is not surprising when you consider that Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the U.S., as well as the substantial investment by streaming platforms in Spanish content over recent years. Global successes like “Money Heist” and “Elite” have solidified Spain’s position as one of the top streaming content-producing countries in the world.

Even though the most popular Spanish language-hit shows came from Spain itself, Mexican shows outnumber their Spanish counterparts by more than two to one on U.S. SVOD platforms.

spanish travel shows

This is largely due to platforms focused on Mexican audiences in the U.S., such as Pantaya and Vix. In addition to Mexico and Spain, a relevant number of shows in Spanish come from Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and the United States. Most of these American shows in Spanish are from Telemundo, a network focused on Spanish-language content owned by NBCUniversal, and these shows are largely available on Peacock and Hulu.

Parrot Analytics’  Content Panorama , reveals that, among the main SVOD platforms, Netflix is the one that relies the most on Spanish-language content. They made up 8.7% of shows available on the platform and 7.7% of the movies.  Peacock follows with almost 5% of its TV catalog being originally in Spanish.

Netflix and Peacock, besides having the highest Spanish TV shares, have a different approach when regarding this type of content. Netflix has focused on producing and acquiring content originally from Spanish-speaking countries, especially Spain, through partnerships with studios in these countries and making them available for global audiences. This strategy has resulted in global hits that cater not only to Spanish-speaking audiences such as the aforementioned  “Money Heist,” its prequel “Berlin,” and the prison drama “Vis A Vis.”

spanish travel shows

In contrast, Peacock’s Spanish-language catalog consists primarily of U.S. productions targeting Spanish-speaking audiences, mostly from Telemundo. These shows, often soap operas and dramas, cater to an audience that traditionally is already familiar with this kind of content. Some examples are “El Señor De Los Cielos” and “Yo Soy Betty, La Fea.”

This shows the diversity of Spanish-language content and its broad appeal to US and global audiences, which makes it one of the main languages of the streaming landscape.
