We have a quick update with a few more details following yesterday’s breaking news that the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy is set to arrive in July. We now have some more specific info from Netflix and other international releases.

All of Prodigy season 2 arrives in 4 weeks

Today we were able to confirm with Netflix that all 20 episodes of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy will arrive on Netflix on Monday, July 1. Releasing all 20 episodes at the same time is quite different than the first season, which was released weekly in two 10-episode groups; the first half streamed on Paramount+ from October 2021 to February 2022, and part two ran from October to December 2022.

Season 2 coming to SkyShowtime, Canada TBA

The season 2 Netflix release includes the USA and the countries where Prodigy season 1 is available. Like with the first season, the second will not be available in Canada and select countries in Europe where SkyShowtime is available (the Nordics, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe). TrekMovie has also confirmed that (as with season 1) SkyShowtime will be streaming season 2, but they have not confirmed a release date. As for Canada, we are still trying to confirm if season 2 will be treated like season 1 and air on CTV Sci-Fi, also available on demand via the CTV app for subscribers of CTV Sci-Fi.

Note: Prodigy has been licensed to broadcasters around the world, including countries where it will stream on Netflix ( like on France TV ). We hopefully will be able to provide updates on more local broadcasters, but for now we recommend checking local listings.

Creators hype the new season

After our report yesterday, co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman took to Twitter/X to confirm the news and talk up all the hard work that went into season 2.

Star Trek Prodigy Season 2 launches July 1st on @Netflix ! It’s a culmination for those who made it, for those who loved it, and for our crew on the Protostar who dared to reach for the stars. In the first season, they stole a ship. Now, watch them earn one! #StarTrekProdigy — Dan & Kevin Hageman (@brothershageman) June 3, 2024

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as soon as they are available.

Keep up with news about the  Star Trek Universe .

SDCC: ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 Coming To VOD On Monday, DVD/Blu-Ray In November + Panel Highlights

Was hoping for a more staggered release but obviously not surprised. But yeah 20 episodes all at once, that’s going to be a long but fun binge.

Can’t wait!

It will be a fun binge or two or three. Alternatively, 20 weeks of one-a-week would have felt like a real slog, imo.

Yep so true! I don’t think the weekly idea was remotely in the cards anyway. I know some people are disappointed this will all be released at once but if enough people binge it we may get a third season out of it. I know there will be fan campaigns to encourage as many people to watch it ASAP!

And I’m going to binge season one again now. This will be my fourth time watching it.

…about to embark on my third!

Maybe, but two blocks of 10 like Netflix usually does for animation would have been easier for those of us who don’t have time to binge – especially since the July 4 pseudo-long weekend is right then, and realistically many people won’t have a chance to watch until after. It’s a choice between avoiding fan spaces for a long while or being spoiled.

The gf and I are treating ourselves to a mini staycation over that long weekend, so a Prodigy binge is sounding pretty good…

That sounds AMAZING! I’m thinking of taking the day off and just binge it as well. I have a girlfriend who is a casual Trek fan who adores Janeway (her favorite character) but can’t get into this show. Not into animated shows unfortunately.

But she may be convinced to watch it with me if we make a fun day out of it, order lots of food and beer as long as I can promise Janeway is in every episode lol.

Aw, that’s a shame. I never did understand not being able to deal with animation as a medium for storytelling, but to each their own. Hope you have a good time with the show, though! But yeah, plan is to grab some favorite snacks from the local shops, breakfast stuff and entrees from Costco (because no cooking unless the spirit moves us to do so), and just have a big, relaxing geek in. I have been informed, however, that if anything even mildly unpleasant happens to Rok-Tahk, my gf will be nailing a manifesto to the doors of the Paramount offices. 😝

Yeah she’s never been into animation. She’s watched Pixar movies and things like that but to watch a weekly show is different.

But maybe she will surprise me and want to do it. She knows how much I love it. Either way I’m pumped and will be a fun day! It’s funny to be so excited about a kid’s show but here we are.

No one is going to watch this but the diehard trek chronics. We all know this. This show would have been more successful as a Star Wars cartoon on The Disney channel.

Any possibly that you could stop trolling (in other words, act like a human being); or, failing that, just go away? Pretty-please?

Thank you Michael. We just banned one troll not to long ago and the boards have been so peaceful since. I really wish he will just leave me alone or just go away. I’m not even sure why he wastes his time and ours?

I’m sick of it. And I think I speak for a lot of people.

This is one troll that keeps coming back. I am sure if he gets banned, he will just create another name again. I am sure he’s already been banned under another name or names in the past.

All true. And he was banned before. He came back and started the same nonsense. Just some lonely lonely nerd with no life if this is what you do to entertain yourself.

I just want him to leave me alone and I am thinking to get the moderators involved. He shouldn’t be here at all.

“We just banned one troll not to long ago and the boards have been so peaceful since.”

Tell me about it! 😂

These boards have been paradise since the former resident lunatic got bounced. No more passive aggressive ‘Its funny how SOME fans here hate such as such show that I really really like but really love Lower Decks?” Or basically insult you in your face but just because he doesn’t say your name seems to think it’s OK to do without repercussions. Or the constant call out threads and then when people surprisingly responded the lunatic started to play the victim and say everyone should just move on now. Or how about the time he tried to censor the board by telling people not say anything bad about what an awful showrunner Michelle Paradise is but then make 20 posts a day slamming Terry Matalas.

And my favorite part when he had the nerve to proclaim others as bullies when he trolled, attacked or harassed anyone he disagreed with.

I have never seen such strange behavior from anyone over the age of 12.

As for A34, that guy is just insecure too like the former resident lunatic was and gets triggered over everything too; he just does a better job of not coming off as a nut case about it. But it’s a defense mechanism to try and just trigger others anytime he’s triggered first. He seems to really really like Discovery and feels threatened because people seem to like other Trek shows more like this one, LDS and SNW. Where do these people come from??! 😐

The fact he keeps harassing you has struck some kind of nerve with him or as you say just looking for a fight because he has no life or friends.

Lol I can’t disagree with any of this

I have never seen people so defensive over a TV show before. Certainly passionate about it but to the point you’re so angry how random strangers talks about it is something I will never get.

And yes A34 just uses it as a defense mechanism. That’s a great observation. And what I mean by that this is someone who constantly goes out their way to tell us what an amazing show Discovery is, how much everyone obviously loves it, it’s highly watch and so on because it seems to bother him of the many critics it has over it.

And all that’s fine, I don’t care. But then he seems to constantly put down all the other shows anytime someone seems to suggest they like another show over DIS like SNW for example. He finds any way he can to put that show down or suggest it’s not as popular as DIS which is an absolute joke. You can totally hate it, no one cares but you can’t spin reality either. Every metric out there SNW is far more popular than Discovery. He literally comes off as being threatened over it. It’s just bizarre.

And here he is telling everyone that PRO got cancelled because not enough people watched it which I not only fully agree with but said for months I was worried not enough people were watching it and could get cancelled.Anf sure enough…

But then he can’t just admit Discovery was most likely cancelled for the same reasons lol. It was just too costly and was probably losing viewers. He keeps saying Discovery wasn’t actually cancelled…it was just ending, although everyone from Michelle Paradise to all the actors said it was cancelled. They were literally working on the next season when they got the notice.

But he wants to pull a Trump and lives in an alternate universe of alternate facts where that isn’t true.

Shows gets cancelled. It happens 99.9% of the time. Why it’s so hard to admit this common and obvious fact I can’t tell you, but he keeps denying it just the same.

That’s why it’s just a waste of time to deal with him. He’ll find every argument he can to convince us the other shows are failing on some level but wants to pretend Discovery hasn’t had its own set of failures for some reason. Many even the producers have admitted themselves.

You can absolutely love the show. But when you’re trying so hard to spin things in the most ridiculous ways possible then maybe you’re a little too invested in it then you should be.

As always you state it so well my friend! 👍

Some of these guys are just too wrapped up in this stuff. I love LDS, thinks it’s awesome, but I don’t go around attacking others who thinks it’s bad nor do I put down other shows just to prop it up like these insecure fans do. Why would I do that? Whoose mind am I changing about it if people thinks it sucks regardless.

And I can fully admit both Prodigy and LDS got cancelled due to fewer views just like Discovery was probably cancelled for the same reason and those two are my favorite shows in NuTrek.

I’m hoping season 2 of Prodigy will get enough viewers for a season 3 but I’ll be OK if it doesn’t because it’s just a TV show. Life goes on either way. I’ll do everything I can to help make it happen but still move on if it doesn’t.

Trying to clamp down on other people’s excitement about a show they love just because they don’t do the same for yours is just bitterness seeping through. Nothing more.

Strikes me as strange how people are so bothered by someone who doesn’t like PRO and posts about it when every article about DSC for the past seven years has been absolutely flooded with comments by people with nothing positive to say about it. If all the DSC lovers had to just accept everyone hating on the show they like, surely PRO lovers should be expected to do the same?

Uh no, that’s not remotely close to the issue and don’t pretend otherwise.

The guy is just trolling and looking to get a rise out of me, period. He’s been doing it for literally years now.I do not remotely care about his opinion about any show, Prodigy, SNW, Discovery or otherwise. I really can care less.

And he knows it. Notice he didn’t actually give his opinion on the show itself but just responded to me trying to start a useless fight. I would actually have a tinge of respect if he could give something longer than a three sentence answer of any issues he has over it and say why. That would actually be something interesting for a change.

I don’t know why I trigger this person so much that he’s obsessed with what I say here but he’s obviously very bored in his real life because this is all he does and follows me around trying to get my attention like a lost puppy. I have asked him over and over and over and over again to leave me alone. It’s creepy, obsessive and weird.

And he goes around constantly trying to bait people because he seems triggered people like something he doesn’t.

And no offense I wish people like you can stop turning everything into an either/or argument. I’m pretty sure there are just as many people out there that likes both Prodigy and Discovery. I know, SHOCKING but I’m sure they are out there just like I’m sure there are people who think they both suck.

And not a single person here has mentioned Discovery here so why bring it up? Same time if you don’t like Prodigy please give your thoughts on it. I’m going to guess 99.9% of people here won’t have an issue with it. Trust me when I say I won’t.

But can we please stop turning everything into a childless fight and making everything so personal? One guy got banned very recently because he seemed to think anyone saying something negative about Discovery was somehow a personal dig at him. Just bizarre and obsessive on an extreme level.

We’re just discussing TV shows, seriously. Stop making it so personal or it’s some slight towards people who like them.

Wow. Sorry to have upset you so much, that was not my intention. You’re someone on here that even when you have a differing view to mine is still always respectful in stating it.

That said, this is exactly why I don’t really come to the comment section here very often anymore. The way I have obviously made you feel today (for which again I am sorry) is exactly how I have been made to feel here (by others, not you!) as an enjoyer of NuTrek.

I’m sorry I snapped at you. That wasn’t my intent but this has NOTHING to do with Prodigy or Discovery. Nothing.

The guy is simply a troll. I don’t even think he likes Discovery all that much to be frank about it. He just likes to be a contrarian because it gets him attention. And I say that because I can’t tell you a single post where he’s given any in-depth thoughts about the show in seven years.

Put it this way, it’s the final season that just ended and you probably won’t find a single post in any of the episode threads giving his thoughts on it.

But you can find MANY threads of him responding to me with the same useless posts . 🙄

But I get your point I do. No one should feel attacked for liking a show. That’s different. The ONLY thing I can say when people do that then REPORT it. Seriously. People like that shouldn’t be here either and thankfully there are less of them today.

But I guess I just don’t get it. There is some people who either wants to feel slighted because people don’t like a show as much as them or attack others who just doesn’t feel the same way as them one way or the other.

Then there is the rest of us, just want to have a well rounded conversation about it. And maybe there is something I’m not seeing that you do but I thought there was a good balance of people discussing Discovery this season? In fact there seems to be very little fighting over it one way or the other. This was probably the most civil I seen discussing this show… like ever lol.

But again maybe I’m wrong? But for me, most people seem to be pretty positive about the season from what I can tell. And the ones who didn’t like it just gave their own opinions about it. You know how civil things are when no moderators are threatening to ban people for acting out lol. I don’t think it happened in one review thread I read this season.

Agreed. The mentality that people can’t enjoy something you don’t baffles me. Which as I said is largely why over the last two years I’ve dipped my toe into the comment section less and less and just read the articles.

Sorry if I misread the interactions above and contributed negatively in any way.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on future Treks, PRO included (should I be brave enough to delve into the comments lol).

No I did overact because I’m just tired of it. He won’t leave me alone and it’s creepy and weird. I think I’m going to have to get the moderators involved. And he’s been banned before.

As for your issue, of course I get it. Discovery has been a show that hasn’t had the most positive fanfare for five seasons now. And I don’t have a problem discussing my issues with the show or any show. That’s why we come here. No one I know in real life cares about any of these shows lol. Most people I know has never even heard of Discovery. So for most of us we come online to either vent or be excited for something. And yeah Discovery has certainly got more the former than the latter.

So I understand that. And I don’t understand why people have to put down others who like something? I don’t get it but sadly that’s a lot of fandom today. I just wish we can just talk about these shows without making people feel bad over it. We’re all waaay attached to this stuff lol.

And I understand people can be over sensitive and don’t like hearing negative things about something they like. But that’s how it works. I been a Voyager fan for 25 years now. I remember hearing every put down on that show for decades lol. I still hear it at times but yeah it’s very different today, hence this thread lol. And I do think that will happen with Discovery in time too. But I have never gotten on anyone’s case about it because I understand why message boards exist.

And then there are others trying to shame people for being negative about something they like. Those people shouldn’t be on a message board anymore than the people who attack others who like something they hate. All of it is just insecurities on a wide level.

And which is why I really wish there was an ignore button. But most of us has been saying this for way too long and it’s never been addressed…ever lol.

But please accept my apology. Just miscommunication on both our ends. And I want to hear your thoughts too. So please try and interact a little more. But I get it.

Thanks Tiger2, in total agreement with everything you just said. LLAP

You as well! 🖖

Tiger, you’re making my ears burn. Cut it out buddy. 😉

You are so incredibly tedious. Go away.

You be Blessed ☯️

It has nothing to do with my feelings towards PRO, which as I’ve noted elsewhere are pretty neutral. A couple of people in this thread were sharing their excitement at the prospect of bingeing the season when this individual inserted himself into the conversation by rudely asserting that no one besides them cared. It was completely uncalled-for, even if you make the judgement (as I do) that the DIS-bashing has sometimes been pretty harsh. There’s a world of difference between stating why you don’t like something and outright taunting others for liking it.

Hi Michael, from my conversation with Tiger2 above I’ve gleaned that I’ve misread a situation here, but seeing as though my initial comment was a direct reply to you I guess I owe you directly the same apology I offered to Tiger2.

I have no knowledge of A34 outside of their comment above, which I took to be just an innocuous comment from someone expressing that they don’t care much for PRO (a sentiment that many here have voiced here about other Trek shows at some point) and then having people call them a troll for having a different opinion.

I am of the firm belief that we should all be able to express our enjoyment or dislike of any series/character/storyline without being labelled as a troll simply because it is a differing opinion to the majority.

Obviously there was more at play in the dynamics here and I have seemingly misread the situation and regrettably let my own negative experiences here and in other places colour my interpretation.

Yes, definitely. No one should be made to feel that they need to apologize for what they like, or what they don’t like. I’ve been posting here, on and off, almost from the time the site’s been active, and during that time I’ve been critical of stuff that mostly everyone else seemed to like, while then feeling obliged to defend shows I liked that others didn’t. That’s what the forums are for: to trade opinions, so long as it’s done with respect.

Funny how you will always write something that goes against 99% of what people on the board think, just to get a reaction. Buy someone a cup of coffee. Be nice for a change, you’ll get a much better reaction.

Considering that Prodigy got cancelled for low ratings, I doubt your views are very mainstream. Most of the views here are in the minority. In reality the show fail to attract the demographics it was made for and has been swept aside and the episodes are to be burned off on Netflix. I apologize for being a realist.

Really? Iseem to recall that when they put up season one, viewership was just fine. It actually demonstrated that making Trek available to a wider audience increased viewership….

Shows with “fine” viewership don’t get canceled after the first season.

They do get cancelled if it’s during a once-in-a-generation restructuring of the TV landscape (ie. The end of the prestige TV era and the end of the lets-pour-everything-into-new-content funding model). The trades all agree (and I haven’t seen you post any evidence to the contrary) that Prodigy was cancelled (and removed from Paramount’s catalog immediately) as a tax maneuver. If it had just been cancelled for normal ratings issues season 1 would have remained available and they probably would have even waited till season 2 had aired since the vast majority of costs for that season had already been expended.

But I don’t know why I am even responding to what is clearly another trolling post. I guess I just don’t want someone out of the know to read your post and think it in any way reflects the reality of the situation.

If the ratings was great Nickelodeon wouldn’t have canceled it. Posting the truth doesn’t make me a troll BTW. Don’t be so insecure.

Bro you’re one the most insecure guys here. 😂

I don’t think you know the meaning of that word. You be blessed.

You get triggered every time someone says Discovery sucks. With the 35% audience score it has on RT (even Nemesis has a 49% audience score lol) I can’t blame you I guess. 😉

I will always selfishly prefer a full season-at-once drop. I get why others like the weekly release, but no effin’ thanks, man.

LOL, no worries. And for the record I usually don’t mind when something gets dropped at once either but I guess 20 episodes feels a bit daunting lol. And besides the fact that conversations about shows dries up much faster when it’s all dropped at once I also worry people will be spoiled for any possible legacy cameos or plot twists that happens which means you have to try and watch it ASAP and not everyone can watch that many episodes that fast.

But this is going to be a lot of fun. And it’s nice it’s happening in the summer.

If they don’t air it in Canada on a streaming service I won’t be able to support and watch season 2 of Prodigy. I refuse to subscribe to cable for CTV Sci-Fi. I would have to subscribe to cable to even get access to the CTV app to watch the episodes. I had hoped Netflix would get the rights to season 1 and 2.

Trek has a relationship with CTV that goes way back. I don’t see it streaming on Netflix in Canada at all. Will more than likely be on CTV Sci-Fi again. You could always use a VPN and switch over to watching Netflix USA.

So, all twenty eps are dropping at once, huh? I’m now visualizing all the contributors to Memory Alpha and Ex Astris Scientia getting together for an all-hands all-nighter, with vast quantities of coffee, pizza, and Chinese take-out to get them through editorial crunch time…

That sounds incredibly fun!

i’ll be there. was surprised how good it was season 1. thought it was gonna be more a teen show but it’s appeal is far beyond that… the deeper it went into season 1 the more addicting it got.

Not a surprise, but I wish it was spaced out more. I don’t mind binging too much myself, but I feel like this method hampers the fan discussion, which is one of the great things about Prodigy IMO.

But either way, I’m just excited to finally be able to watch this.

On the one hand…yes, another summer of Star Trek!

On the other hand…20 episodes in one day?

Well, if the weather isn’t great over the holiday weekend, I know what I’ll be doing.

It’s going to be interesting how all the review sites like this and the Trek YouTube channels handles this now.

Sadly there probably won’t be many reviews when they know probably half of the fans are going to consume it on the first day.

…was wondering the same thing.

Wow dropping 20 episodes in one day! I’m definitely down for it! I agree with others I wished they scattered them out at least a little but I’m watching all of them in one day.

This is the show I’m the most excited about this year.

And I’m rewatching season one again before it starts.

Awesome. I will take a weekend and. Inge the whole season. I truly LOVE this show.

I am definitely chucking a sickie on 1 July.

Interesting, as far as I know this has been the biggest binge in probably the history of Netflix in terms of dropping all episodes at one time. I knew they did it with 13 episodes before but never heard of 20 episodes at the same time. I just hope this doesn’t mean that they want to just burn off the remaining episodes and cancel the show. I would love to see more seasons as I believe this show has been very good overall and isn’t at all as childish as it was originally advertised at.

I’ve heard of them dropping as many as 26 episodes of something at once. For one, Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters – an animated series for kids that’s part of a larger franchise and on which the Hagemans and many other writers who’d go on to do Prodigy worked – has a first season of 26 episodes, all dropped together on December 23rd 2016.

I thought they did 13 + 13 for that? Hmm bad memory I guess.

I’m gonna have to wait for the Blu Ray to drop.

Nice! That fits with the second Season of the 90s Show, so July is a good month to reactivate my Netflix account.

This is really good, it’s been available for a while with English subtitles online. It will be awesome to hear the English voices however. Oh and for everyone who might ask I am a Netflix subscriber. Just not to the French version.

Prodigy Season 2 is the Most Epic Star Trek Season In Years

In Prodigy Season 2, the cuts are deep, and the scope is big — but paradoxically small.

The USS Voyager-A in Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2.

Even among the most diehard Star Trek fans, there is bound to be some part of the vast franchise that gets missed. With 13 films, various shorts, countless novels and comics, 11 distinct TV series — and a 12th in production — not knowing about every corner of the Final Frontier is understandable. But, unlike a franchise like the MCU, Star Trek’s different facets aren’t as overtly interconnected as one might think. Despite a perceived barrier-to-entry for some iterations, most Trek is fairly easy to drop into, as long as you're okay with just catching up as you go along.

In this contradictory manner, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 might be the most welcoming set of new Star Trek episodes since Strange New Worlds Season 1 in 2022. Although co-produced by Nickelodeon with the intention of being aimed a a younger audience, Prodigy Season 2 is as much for grown-up, longtime Star Trek fans as it is for children. With some astoundingly deep, deep cuts to canon, Prodigy Season 2 accomplishes the stated goal for the entire series: to serve as an introduction to the general world of Trek, but also, be its own thing. With all 20 episodes of Prodigy Season 2 now on Netflix, any kind of person remotely interested in Star Trek can suddenly get a crash course in pretty much every flavor that Trek has to offer, all through the lens of a quirky, warm-hearted, and epic new season.

A fresh start

Ma'jel and Gwyn in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2

A new Vulcan cadet, Ma’jel (Michaela Dietz), and Gwyn (Ella Purnell) contemplate their future in Prodigy Season 2.

Back in 2021, Prodigy launched on Paramount+ with a handful of episodes that began as a somewhat generic space adventure, featuring a crew of misfit alien tweens, who, because they need to escape from a forced-labor camp, steal a slick, abandoned Federation starship called the USS Protostar . Because those early episodes found the kids in the distant Delta Quadrant, the crew only gradually started to encounter more and more familiar Star Trek-y things. By the end of the first 20-episode run, Dal (Brett Gray), Rok (Rylee Alazraqui), Zero (Angus Imrie), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Jankom (Jason Mantzoukas), and the adorable slime-creature Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) all end up on Earth, after saving Starfleet from near total destruction. Yes, like many Star Trek season finales of late, Prodigy Season 1 ended with a big fleet, locked in a big battle, but this one turned out all right, mostly because the kids decided to sacrifice their adopted ship to save the day.

That said, in Season 2, you mostly don’t need to know about any of that. Or, to put it another way, anything you missed in Season 1 (or forgot about) will be recapitulated anyway. In an odd meta-textual move, the primary storyline of Prodigy Season 2 is all about a time paradox that might prevent our heroes from meeting in the first place. Therefore, the stakes of Prodigy Season 2, are, on some level, about making sure that Prodigy Season 1 happens at all, which strangely matters less to your enjoyment of the new episodes than maybe it should. This all gets even more meta when you consider that Prodigy fighting for its basic existence has also happened in real life, too. The show was removed from Paramount+ last year and has only found a new life, and a home for Season 2 on Netflix, very recently.

But, if you put all of that aside — and you probably should — what you’ll find in Prodigy Season 2 is a surprising amount of variety packed into a big serialized arc.

Unapologetic Star Trek Hits

Rok and a whale named Gillian in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2.

Never forget that Star Trek loves humpback whales.

Although Prodigy Season 2 has a very large and interconnected arc, the 20-episode-long run means it’s capacious enough to have several stand-alone-ish episodes, many of which employ classic Star Trek tropes. Without spoiling any details, we get a Mirror Universe episode, a Tribble episode, a doppelgänger episode, a new Vulcan character, and even talking whales (the latter of which are interestingly more than just an Easter egg).

Prodigy also features the return of one major character from The Next Generation (and Picard ) in a role that is much larger than a cameo. This detail, revealed roughly midway through the season, makes perfect sense once it happens, both thematically and in terms of the story. And once you’re settled in for this ride, Prodigy Season 2 isn’t shy about getting deep into the weeds of Trekkie canon, including a coda that ties directly into events from very recent other Star Trek series set around the same time. If, while you’re watching, you’re doing the math about when exactly all of this is happening relative to some of the other shows — and thus, wondering if certain events will take place from a different point of view — you’ll find that Prodigy almost goes out of its way to accommodate all of those questions. Because Prodigy’s goal in Season 2 is to preserve its own continuity by fixing the timeline, it also seems to go the extra mile (or lightyear) and clean up other canon problems for other shows, too. For fans who are down with this kind of minutiae, and worry about uniform inconsistencies or even different Starfleet combadge usages, Prodigy oddly has your back.

Whether you’re paying very close to attention to Trekkie details, or sitting back to enjoy the ride, this season bridges the gaps between Star Trek’s two audiences with surprising ease. In the end, the show seems poised for a triumphant third season in which everything we’ve seen so far could become a kind of protracted backstory. Whether that happens or not is unclear. But for now, Prodigy has humbly delivered 20 Star Trek episodes that are more consistent and thrilling than its entire first season, and many of which give other episodes from all the other shows a run for their money.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of Star Trek: Prodigy.

The Big Picture

  • Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy focuses on time travel to save reality from a menacing force.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy includes a family reunion involving Wesley Crusher, played by Wil Wheaton.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy links to Star Trek: Picard by exploring the Mars Attack and other significant events in the timeline.

Star Trek: Prodigy is truly a unique entry into the Star Trek franchise. For starters, it's the first Star Trek series that's geared toward a younger audience - though it still has enough Easter eggs and storylines to hook hardcore Trekkies. It also underwent an upheaval; though it started life as an original series on Paramount+, tax cuts led to the series being cut from the streamer and then eventually landing on Netflix . That worked out for the best as Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy continues to deliver everything fans love about the franchise , including its sleek animation style and top-notch character development.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy finds the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar on a new ship - specifically, a reconstructed version of the Voyager as Admiral Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) has signed them on as warrant officers. The Protostar crew, in an attempt to help Janeway discover the whereabouts of Captain Chakotay ( Robert Beltran ), end up being flung into the future. They wind up racing through time and space to stop a menacing force known as the Loom from wiping out all of reality while dealing with the ups and downs of time travel. But how does the Season 2 finale, "Ourobouros," bring this storyline to a close?

Star Trek: Prodigy

A group of young aliens escape captivity by commandeering a derelict Starfleet ship, the U.S.S. Protostar. As they navigate the galaxy, they must learn to work together and uncover the ship's secrets. The show blends adventure and discovery, appealing to both new viewers and longtime Star Trek fans.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Saves All Reality With a Time Loop

Most of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is focused on how Dal ( Brett Gray ), Rok-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ), Zero ( Angus Imrie ), Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantzoukas ) and newcomer Maj'el ( Michaela Dietz ) trying to find Chakotay while also dealing with the fact that their time travel might undo the existence of their friend Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ). Gwyn, on the other hand, is trying to reconnect with her people, the Solum — but the arrival of the tyrannical Vindicator ( Jameela Jamil ) draws the Loom to the Prime timeline. In order to stop reality from being wiped out, the Protostar crew wind up sending the ship back to the past so that their past selves will be able to find it on the Tars Lamora mining colony. There's also a few emotional moments; the Protostar 's Janeway hologram, which served as a guide to the young crew, had to have its memory wiped. By literally bringing the Protostar 's journey full circle, the universe is safe.

Wesley Crusher Plays a Major Role in ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ — and Has a Family Reunion

The Prodigy crew has help from an unlikely source in their quest to repair time: Wesley Crusher ( Wil Wheaton ). Wesley, having gained some mastery over space and time due to his adventures with the Traveler post- Star Trek: The Next Generation , essentially serves as an erstaz Doctor Who — with showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman being fairly open about their inspiration . After reality is righted, Wesley has an emotional reuniion with his mother Beverly ( Gates McFadden ) and his brother Jack , who is a toddler . A grown-up Jack plays a major part in the final season of Star Trek: Picard , as he reunites with his father, Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ), and plays a role in stopping the twin threats of the Changelings and the Borg. But that isn't the only connection to Picard that Prodigy shares.

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Has Found Its First Cadets

See who'll be beaming down to Starfleet Academy under Holly Hunter's watchful eye.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Sets Up the Events of ‘Star Trek: Picard’

Though Dal and friends are able to fix the timeline and save Chakotay, they return to Starfleet on First Contact Day — specifically 2385. That is the date of the Mars Attack, where synthetics programmed to work at shipyards attacked Mars' inhabitants . Starfleet would cease its exploratory and rescue missions as a result, also banning synthetic beings from being created. Starfleet's actions had grave consequences: a planned mission to evacuate the Romulan homeworld was abandoned, leading to its destruction via solar flare. Unbeknownst to anyone else, Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ) underwent a secret mission to stop the solar flare, which set up the events of the Kelvin Timeline in J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek films . Picard would also resign from Starfleet over their choices, with an Admiral mentioning him by name in "Ouroboros." The fact that Prodigy is able to tie into Star Trek media from past and present while telling its own self-contained narrative is a feat that very few TV shows have pulled off and a reminder of what makes it special.

‘Star Trek Prodigy’ Ends With a New Ship, and a New Mission

Janeway almost follows in Picard's footsteps and leaves Starfleet, but is convinced to come back by Chakotay. She also assigns Dal and his friends to a new Protostar-class vessel named the U.S.S. Prodigy , which will continue to carry out exploration and rescue missions , despite Starfleet's new edicts. “As the Federation’s borders are receding, it's of the utmost importance that you are a beacon of light to those beyond our reach," Janeway tells the crew before she gives them the metaphorical keys to the Prodigy . But even though Janeway is staying on Earth, her holographic form will continue to serve as a mentor to the Prodigy crew. In addition, Dal hands over command of the ship to Gwyn . While a Season 3 renewal hasn't been confirmed yet, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is a wonderful reminder of everything that makes Star Trek great.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy are available to stream on Netflix.

Everything We Know About Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

10 star trek: prodigy things to know before season 2, tulsa king season 2: release date, cast, story, trailer & everything we know.

  • Star Trek: Prodigy introduces a young group of Starfleet cadets on adventures, connecting to the greater Star Trek universe.
  • Timeline of Prodigy starts in 2383 after Voyager's return, with time travel leading to a 2435 alternate future storyline.
  • In Season 2 of Prodigy, there will be time travel for a connection with multiple Star Trek series, exploring new wormholes and alternate futures.

Star Trek: Prodigy has seen its young group of aspiring Starfleet cadets embark on some fantastic adventures, but when does the show take place within the Star Trek timeline? Following Dal R'El (Brett Gray) and his ragtag group of friends aboard the experimental USS Protostar, Prodigy is the first Star Trek series created specifically for a younger audience. Still, the show has plenty for adult fans to love, as it builds on previous Star Trek series, particularly Star Trek: Voyager, and has many connections to the greater Star Trek universe.

After escaping the Tars Lamora prison colony, Dal and his friends steal the USS Protostar and embark on a series of adventures, aided by a hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). The kids eventually set out for Starfleet, hoping they can become true cadets, as the real Admiral Janeway pursues the Protostar. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 , Admiral Janeway recruits Dal and his friends as Warrant Officers, and they set off to find the original crew of the Protostar, including Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran).

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 joins season 1's episodes on Netflix in summer 2024 so that all 40 episodes will be available on the streamer.

When Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Takes Place In Star Trek’s Timeline

With time travel involved, prodigy's timeline can be a bit confusing..

The main storyline of Star Trek: Prodigy begins in 2383, five years after the USS Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant in Star Trek: Voyager's series finale. Triumphantly back Alpha Quadrant, Janeway was quickly promoted to Vice Admiral and attended the launching ceremony of the USS Protostar. Under the command of Captain Chakotay , Janeway's dear friend and former First Officer, the Protostar then set off for the Delta Quadrant to clean up any messes left by Voyager's interference in the unexplored area of space.

For reference, Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in 2381, and Star Trek: Picard begins in 2399.

Soon after arriving in the Delta Quadrant, Chakotay and his crew encountered a temporal anomaly that sent them about fifty years into the future to the year 2435. The Protostar landed on the planet Solum, whose people, the Vau N'Akat, sought to destroy the United Federation of Planets to prevent the collapse of their own society. Although the Vau N'Akat managed to plant a weapon on the Protostar, Chakotay sent the unmanned ship back in time before the weapon could be used. The Protostar ended up on Tars Lamora in the year 2366, where it sat until Dal and his young friends stumbled upon it in 2383.

Refresh your memory with 10 things to know from Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 before Prodigy season 2's 2024 Netflix debut.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Will Have Time Travel To An Alternate Future

The majority of the voice cast from Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 return in season 2, for a time travel adventure that will connect multiple Star Trek series. At the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, Starfleet discovered that the destruction of the Protostar had created a new wormhole to the same coordinates where Chakotay and his crew had been lost. As Admiral Janeway, Dal, and the rest of their crew take the USS Voyager-A in search of Chakotay, they will have to travel through this wormhole into the alternate future.

When the Protostar arrived on Solum in 2435, the remnants of the Vau N'Akat people saw it as a way to save their civilization and get revenge on the Federation for the decades of civil war caused by First Contact. The events of Star Trek: Prodigy's season 1 finale, however, altered the future, since the Federation now knows about these events. Plus, Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) travels to her home planet of Solum with the hope of reuniting her people and preventing the civil war, and it remains to be seen what effect her efforts will have.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

Production [ ]

Development [ ].

Star Trek franchise producer Alex Kurtzman said in January 2019 that a "kids-focused" animated Star Trek series was in development. [6] Nickelodeon ordered two seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy in late April 2019, and Kevin and Dan Hageman were attached as showrunners . [7] [8] Ben Hibon was announced as director and creative lead for the series in August 2020. [9] In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced that Prodigy would debut on the new streaming service Paramount+ along with the rest of the Star Trek Universe . [10] Paramount+ confirmed the second season order in November, [11] and it was revealed to consist of 20 episodes in January 2022. [12]

In June 2023, Paramount+ canceled the series. The crew were reported to be completing work on the second season while CBS began looking for a different streaming service or network to release it on. [13] Waltke soon confirmed that the season would be completed on schedule. [14] In August, the Hagemans said they were confident the season would be released and active discussions were taking place. [15] They added that work on the season was expected to be completed in December. [16] Later in August, after gathering 33,000 signatures in a Change.org petition and raising money via GoFundMe , a group of Prodigy fans paid for a plane to fly over the offices of Amazon , Hulu , Apple , and Netflix with a "Save Star Trek: Prodigy " banner. [17] In October, the series was picked up by Netflix and the second season was scheduled for 2024. [18] Kurtzman attributed this to the efforts of the fans. [19]

Writing [ ]

Aaron Waltke was promoted to co- head writer and co-executive producer for the second season.

The Hagemans completed writing for the last two episodes of the season by February 2022. [20] First-season writer Aaron Waltke was promoted to co- head writer and co-executive producer for the second season, [21] and explained that both seasons were split into two 10-episode "mini-arcs" each. [12] He described each one as a "self-contained arc, but with plenty of story threads that you could pull to have it continue on to the next". [22] After the young protagonists' mentor, a hologram of Kathryn Janeway , sacrificed herself at the end of the first season, the second sees them joining the crew of the real Admiral Janeway as " warrant officers in training". The Hagemans said their new mentor was an opportunity for growth, and they would not be "coddled" in the season like they were with Hologram Janeway. [23] They also teased that Janeway and the protagonists would be on a new starship in the second season after the destruction of the USS Protostar and USS Dauntless in the first season. This was later confirmed to be the USS Voyager -A, a new version of Janeway's ship from the series Star Trek: Voyager . [24] [15] Dan Hageman said there were "two really big engines" in the season that were established in the first season finale: a message from Captain Chakotay in the future, and Gwyn's decision to try prevent her homeworld's future civil war. [25]

Casting and voice recording [ ]

Kate Mulgrew reprises her role of Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager . [26] The voice cast for the series' young protagonists includes Brett Gray as Dal R'El, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Angus Imrie as Zero, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, and Dee Bradley Baker as Murf. [3] Mulgrew revealed in January 2021 that voice recording for the second season was about to begin. [4] Some recording for the last five episodes had begun by July 2022. [22]

The Hagemans said in October 2022 that the series' search for Robert Beltran 's Captain Chakotay (from Voyager ) would continue into the second season, [27] and that other "legacy characters" from previous Star Trek series would also be included. [28] That December, Ronny Cox —who reprised his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Edward Jellico in the first season—said he was also probably returning for the second season. [29] In August 2023, Robert Picardo was revealed to be reprising his role as the Doctor from Voyager in the second season. [15] Waltke said the Doctor would have a recurring role in the second season mentoring the main characters while Janeway is busy. [5]

Marketing [ ]

The Hagemans released the first clip from the series at the Star Trek Las Vegas fan convention in August 2023. The clip confirmed the appearance of the USS Voyager -A and revealed Picardo's return as the Doctor. [15]

Release [ ]

The season was set to premiere on Paramount+ in late 2023, [30] before it was canceled by the streaming service. [13] After the series was picked up by Netflix, the season was expected to be released in 2024 on that service in the U.S. and most international territories, [18] except for Canada and countries where SkyShowtime (a combination of Paramount+ and Peacock for some of Europe) is available. [2] All 20 episodes were made available in France on france.tv on March 22, 2024, [31] which surprised the Hagemans who initially described the release as a "leak". They soon clarified that the early release in France was legitimate and caused by a miscommunication. [32] All 20 episodes of the season are scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 1, 2024. In Canada, the series is broadcast on CTV Sci-Fi Channel and is available on CTV.ca and the CTV app. [2]

'Star Trek: Prodigy' is the 'Voyager' spin-off you never knew you wanted — and we love it

And you thought it was just a kids' show… Why "Prodigy" is the perfect continuation of Captain Janeway's story.

The crew of the Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy

Of all the TV Treks to date, " Star Trek: Voyager " is the one with the most definitive ending. From day one, the show was on a mission to get Captain Janeway and her lost-in-space crew back from the distant Delta Quadrant. Once that objective was achieved in series finale "Endgame", however, there wasn't much left on the ledger labelled "unfinished business". The series certainly wasn't calling out for a follow-up, but two decades later it's got one — and it's great.

Okay, " Star Trek: Prodigy " isn't technically the eighth season of "Voyager", but it's undeniably the '90s show's spiritual heir. Unlike "Picard", which used its third season to deliver the perfect send-off for the "Next Generation" crew, "Prodigy" substitutes wall-to-wall nostalgia for youthful exuberance, to tell the story of a bunch of kids who stumble on a grounded Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant.

They're a likeable group seemingly focus-grouped to look good on a lunchbox. Indeed, on many levels, "Prodigy" is the quintessential Nickelodeon animation, working through a playbook that's been serving Saturday morning cartoons since the '80s. A gang of mismatched heroes with plenty to learn? Hat tip to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Characters trapped in an unfamiliar and hostile alien location? Thank you, "ThunderCats". A cute, wise and indecipherable sidekick? That'll be Brain in "Inspector Gadget". They've even brought the obligatory mentor along for the ride.

The crew of the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy

But while it would undoubtedly have been easier to set a fun, kid-friendly cartoon in a loose facsimile of the "Star Trek" universe, "Prodigy" goes all in and embraces the franchise's history with the same reverence "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" had for the "Star Wars" movies . That aforementioned mentor is an Emergency Training Hologram based on a certain Captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced by original actor Kate Mulgrew ), and she ties the voyages of the USS Protostar to nearly six decades of "Trek" storytelling — while helping her protegés to learn the ropes, and shape the future of the universe.

The show is ingeniously structured, drip-feeding the " Star Trek " references to keep older viewers interested without alienating new recruits. Like most of the show's younger viewers, the rag-tag crew of the Protostar (each one an extra-terrestrial) have no knowledge of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Federation. But with Janeway as their guide, their close encounters with Tribbles, the Borg and even the Kazon (Klingon-esque antagonists so lame that "Voyager" quickly left them behind) provide a gateway to "Trek"'s wider universe, plotting a course for the real story to get started.

"Prodigy" may be targeted at kids, but it's hard to imagine how any show could more embody the values of "Star Trek". As in "Voyager", the crew of the Protostar are charting a course through an unknown region of space, working as a team to science their way past the obstacles they encounter, while formulating theories that (almost) sound plausible.

Catherine Janeway and Chakotay in Star Trek: Prodigy

As with all the best Starfleet crews, the chemistry is fantastic, all the way from conventionally cocky Dal R'El, to malleable Mellanoid slime worm Murf, and — perhaps best of all — Zero, a telepathic, non-corporeal Medusan. Their species first appeared in "Star Trek: Original Series" episode "Is There in Truth no Beauty", and they have to keep their true form hidden in a robot suit to avoid driving shipmates mad. (Just as "Voyager" did with the entirely CG Species 8472, "Prodigy" relishes the fact its alien lifeforms aren't limited by what's feasible for human actors in prosthetics.)

The production also features none of the "it'll do…" mindset you'd once have expected from a kid-oriented spin-off. The theme is by top Hollywood composer Michael Giacchino (whose previous credits include "Rogue One", "The Batman", JJ Abrams first "Star Trek"), while the voice cast is packed with top talent like John Noble ("Fringe"), Daveed Diggs ("Snowpiercer") and Jameela Jamil ("The Good Place"). The space battles are pretty spectacular, too.

And for anyone expecting a dumbed down plot, "Prodigy"'s second season shoots preconceptions down faster than you can say "Temporal Mechanics 101". The foundations of season two were laid in season one, when the real Janeway (now a Vice Admiral, as revealed in " Star Trek: Nemesis ") learned that an experimental starship called the USS Protostar — under the command of her former first officer, Chakotay — had been located on a planetoid called Tars Lamora, and was now under the control of a bunch of fugitive kids.

The USS Protostar from Star Trek: Prodigy

Without venturing too far into spoiler territory, what follows is a complex and sophisticated story involving time loops, a first contact scenario gone horribly wrong, and an antagonist with a serious (and, arguably, understandable) grudge against Starfleet. It has monsters (known as the Loom) who can erase their victims from history, and a brief excursion to the Mirror Universe — where, yes, goatee beards are still a surefire giveaway that you're talking to a villain. It also features some refreshingly familiar voices (Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Robert Picardo as the Doctor, Ronny Cox as Admiral Jellico ), and a pivotal role for a former boy wonder who quit Starfleet to play at being Doctor Who.

If "Prodigy" is not quite "Voyager" season 8, it's definitely season 7.2, a passing of the torch to the next, next generation. This show was never about Janeway, Chakotay or the Doctor but its wonderful, cynicism-free celebration of "Star Trek" could never have worked without them.

As this era of Starfleet deals with synth uprisings and the evacuation of Romulus — events destined to leave lasting scars on Jean-Luc Picard and the Federation — it's good to know the crew of the Prodigy are still out there, somewhere in the cosmos. There's no question they deserve a third season to see what strange new worlds they might find.

Richard's love affair with outer space started when he saw the original "Star Wars" on TV aged four, and he spent much of the ’90s watching "Star Trek”, "Babylon 5” and “The X-Files" with his mum. After studying physics at university, he became a journalist, swapped science fact for science fiction, and hit the jackpot when he joined the team at SFX, the UK's biggest sci-fi and fantasy magazine. Will There Be a Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Streaming Release Date & Is It Coming Out?

A nticipation is growing among enthusiasts for the upcoming premiere launch of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3. There has been widespread speculation about the series’ release date. The show’s continuation can only depend upon audiences tuning in to the next 20 episodes on Netflix after its official debut takes place on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Here's all the Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Netflix release date information we know so far and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there a Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 Netflix release date?

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 does not have an official release date. Even if Netflix commissions a third season this year, the likelihood of the new episodes being available on Netflix before 2026 is super low. However, it will likely be announced in the future.

As of this writing, the creators and producers have not yet confirmed a concrete release date. However, the creators advised the fans’ to keep on increasing their curiosity for it. They also suggested streaming into Season 2, which will give hopes to them that the show might come. But unfortunately, it won’t be coming anytime soon. Season 3’s fate completely depends upon viewers tuning into Netflix and completing season 2. Netflix keeps its viewership numbers under wraps and tracks the millions of minutes streamed. Along with binge-watching habits, and social media buzz surrounding a show.

However, based on interviews with Screen Rant , the executive producer Kevin shared his updates on the hopes for Season 3. He quotes, “Well, it’s been a while since we finished season 2. We don’t have offices anymore. We’re in our homes right now. I know that everyone in our crew had such a delight working on this show. So, I look forward to that day when we can make that call, we get a call from Alex Kurtzman, and they’re like, ‘Netflix has an appetite for more Prodigy. Whether it’s an animated film, a sequel, or if it’s a third season. But to be able to call up our crew and actors, I know everyone who can would love to come back.”

The series plot particularly focuses on how some teens stumble upon an old spaceship and decide to take it for a spin through the galaxy. But things worsen when the original owner shows up, which causes some trouble.

According to the above-mentioned report, the interview with Kevin and Dan Hageman discusses the possibility of it happening by saying, “ A best-case scenario would mean a likely 2-year wait for more Star Trek: Prodigy, whether an animated movie or Star Trek: Prodigy season 3. “

The cast members include Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Rylee Alazraqui, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Dee Bradley Baker, John Noble, and Jimmi Simpson.

Where is Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 coming out?

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 could come out on Netflix.

The makers have confirmed that Season 3 could debut on Netflix. However, there is no set date or trailer as of now.

Why Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 might not be happening anytime soon

Season 3 probably isn’t coming out. This whole thing depends on the fans binge-watching the previous series on Netflix to make it stand out. But the possibility of it happening anytime soon is equal to zero. Rumored speculations depend, if lucky, that the series might happen in 2026. As this year might be the time to celebrate the 6th year of Star Trek and a better way to honor this milestone.
