Luke Combs concert shows why he's out on a stadium tour as his 5th album hits the streets

I f you’ve never seen Luke Combs in concert, you may be wondering how this unassuming figure has become the first country music performer to play two consecutive nights at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Only Taylor Swift and Metallica have managed two nights on the same tour in that room, which has held more than 70,000 people on its best days, from two Super Bowls to Garth Brooks (who drew 77,653 people but only played one night).

It doesn’t hurt that Combs, at 34, has topped the Billboard Country Airplay charts with 16 hits, from “Hurricane” (not the one Bob Dylan sang) to “Fast Car,” a Tracy Chapman cover that led to what he told the crowd at State Farm Stadium may be his proudest moment: performing the song at the 2024 Grammy Awards with the woman who wrote it.

Combs did all but three of his chart-topping singles on Friday, May 31. And he hit those other three on Saturday .

It’s doubtful Combs will ever be the world’s most magnetic — or electrifying — entertainer.

That just isn't who he is or what he brings to the equation.

He does offer something at least as compelling as showmanship, though. And that’s sincerity. You could feel how much he felt those songs as he was singing them, which made the love songs more romantic and the poignant songs more poignant.

Did it make the drinking songs more drunk? That's hard to say when you're not drinking, but I'm thinking almost certainly.

As Combs admitted in the course of dedicating three songs to his wife, who happened to be in attendance at the stadium, he does a lot of love songs.

And he does them well — in a way that clearly resonates with his adoring public.

You could see that in the couples staring lovingly into each other’s eyes while singing his songs at what seemed to be full volume in each other's faces, a scene that played out many times on the video screens as Combs performed.

Having several love songs people want to sing into each other’s faces is a rare commodity, as Lionel Richie can attest.

Which brings us to the singing.

Combs is blessed with a distinctive voice that telegraphs emotion in a gritty rasp that makes the most of every lyric, from his own songs, the best of which thrive on emotion, to the soulful waltz he took through an Ed Sheeran track called “Dive” and, obviously, Chapman’s “Fast Car.”

There are those who may not care for the distinctive nature of his voice, as there are those who do not care for the distinctive nature of what Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan do.

But State Farm Stadium was packed with those who understand exactly what it is that makes him such a brilliant vocalist. And Combs was playing to those people with total conviction in his increasingly sweaty Arizona Cardinals baseball cap, wiggling his fingers as though it somehow helped him navigate those melodies.

The sincerity he brings to singing also came through in the monologues he sprinkled through the concert as he talked about his wife and kids and hopes and dreams and never having stepped a single foot outside North Carolina until he'd finished college.

How Luke Combs sang 'Fast Car' with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys

The way he set up “Fast Car” was a master class in how this entertainment thing is done (or should be done), a heartfelt remembrance of learning to play the guitar his parents bought him as a kid but not until he'd gone away to college, eventually mastering the chords to Chapman’s song.

“That was one of my favorite songs in the whole world and one of the first songs I remember hearing,” he said.

He was 4 when he decided "Fast Car" was his jam.

“And all these years later, I got to stand on the stage at the Grammys with Miss Tracy Chapman,” he said, as the crowd went wild. “One of the proudest moments of my career, if not the proudest moment. So, if you guys want to help me sing my favorite song….”

The fact that that’s his favorite song speaks volumes to the kind of artist Combs aspires to be.

In the meantime, he’s proven he already knows exactly what it takes to write a love song that has couples kissing as he sings (“They say nothing lasts forever but they ain't seen us together or the way the moonlight dances in your eyes/ Just a T-shirt in the kitchen with no make-up and a million other things that I could look at my whole life.")

And his drinking songs are everything a country drinking song should be, especially the song that closed his set, “Beer Never Broke My Heart.”

“Longneck ice-cold beer never broke my heart,” he sang. “Like diamond rings and football teams have torn this boy apart.”

Regardless of the subject matter (true love, drinking, fast cars, losing a brother to the California lifestyle in the deeply moving "Where the Wild Things Are"), thousands of people sang along because he made them see themselves in every line. That’s the sort of talent knuckleheads who think this music game is all about proficiency and flash will never understand.

That’s why Combs is playing stadiums and they’re home talking trash on social media.

The Wilder Blue opened for Luke Combs with the national anthem

The Wilder Blue strolled onstage as the first of four opening acts and set the tone with a simple request.

“Will you please stand and remove your hats for the national anthem?”

What followed was a really pretty version that played to their strengths as a harmony group, if not as spectacularly as the song they said they dusted off to see what strengths they had when they first got together — “Seven Bridges Road,” a Steve Young song most commonly associated with the Eagles.

That vocal blend continued to impress as they brought their set to a crowd-pleasing finish with “Wave Dancer” and “The Ghost of Lincoln.”

Hailey Whitters as charming as ever opening for Luke Combs

In the interest of full disclosure, I love Hailey Whitters.

She was two songs deep in her performance as the second opening act for Luke Combs when she told the crowd “I’m so happy, I’m pinching myself”.”

Of course she was.

This is Whitters’ first stadium tour and she is clearly thrilled to find herself on such a major bill, which only added to the charm of a set whose highlights ranged from “Tie’r Down” (“She might tie the knot but you can’t tie'r down”) to “I’m in Love” (“He's in a T-shirt, all cleaned up/ Good lord almighty, Mama, don't wait up”).

She also turned in a spirited cover of the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene” (aka that song Beyonce did) and signed off with a crowd-pleasing romp through her own “Everything She Ain’t,” her first platinum single.

Luke Combs opener #3: Charles Wesley Godwin reps West Virginia roots

The concert’s third act, Charles Wesley Godwin, came out rocking in a Luke Combs T-shirt and a red-and-white bandana, leading his band in a headbanging version of “Cue Country Roads,” a southern rock anthem whose chorus pleads, “Come on and take me home.”

And he ended the set by cueing up that old John Denver hit himself, leading the crowd in a joyous singalong on “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a song he introduced with “Only one way for a West Virginia boy to finish a set.”

That West Virginia vibe was duly reinforced by a coal-mining song he sent out to his dad and a lead guitarist repping Western Pennsylvania rockers G-Force on his vintage black-and-gold T-shirt.

Godwin is an energetic bandleader who’s surrounded himself with a stage full of musicians more than capable of giving each song what it needed, from the country rockers to the country ballads to John Denver’s most enduring pop hit.

Luke Combs opener #4: Cody Jinks reps the Arizona Cardinals

Cody Jinks hit the stage as the main support for Combs in an Arizona Cardinals jersey (No. 24) and reminisced about his introduction to the Phoenix market, playing Crescent Ballroom on a tour with kindred spirit Whitey Morgan.

Rocking a ZZ Top-worthy beard, a feathered hat and Elvis shades, he led his bandmates in a gritty Southern rock revival, complete with dual guitar harmonies.

Setting the tone with “Fast Hand,” a song on which the singer claims he never meant to be a bad man, they packed their set with highlights — “Ain’t a Train,” “I’m Not the Devil,” “Outlaws and Mustangs” and a defiant performance of “Hippies and Cowboys,” which felt like it could be a bit of a signature song for Jinks.

“I've never been a part of any musical scene,” he sang. “I ain't just talking Nashville, if you know what I mean/ They don't write about me in their magazines/ And I don't ask for no reviews on the songs that I sing.”

Fair enough, you bearded outlaw.

Having said that, my review of your performance, which you did not ask for? Just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re already rocking stadiums in Elvis shades as main support to Mr. I Can Do Two Nights In Rooms This Size without a single hit that anyone would recognize (although “Must Be the Whiskey” has somehow gone platinum).

Australian states vying to host King Charles and Queen Camilla during visit

States and territories are vying to host King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their expected visit in October, as the federal government works with palace officials to put the final touches on the royal couple's itinerary.

Tourism authorities say past royal trips, which have resulted in images of Australian landmarks being beamed around the world, have prompted an influx of bookings and tens of millions in visitor spending.

Offers ranging from luxury tropical island stays, exclusive wildlife encounters, wine tours and opera performances have been put forward by the country's premiers at the request of the federal government.

Giselle Bastin, a Flinders University expert on the British royal family, said it was unlikely the royal couple would visit every state and territory due to the king's ongoing treatment for cancer.

"The tours have become much shorter since the 50s," she said, adding that she expected the royal couple would do a six-day tour with about three appearances a day.

"While he's very keen on all the states and territories … it'll be whichever state has put in the best case for why they need to be visited."

She is also convinced King Charles and Queen Camilla will enjoy the same rock-star reception experienced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, and Prince William and his wife Catherine four years earlier.

"Even though the Sussexes and the then-Cambridges had enormous media pull because of their youth and celebrity status, I think King Charles comes with that extra fairy dust of kingship," Dr Bastin said.

"The sovereign is a big deal for many Australians still."

So, what's on offer?

State and territory leaders were asked to develop itineraries aligned with two main themes — King Charles's first visit to Australia as sovereign and his interest in climate and sustainability.

Queensland's proposed royal itinerary includes a visit to Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, a trip to the Gold Coast and then north to Cairns, where the king would meet those impacted by January's devastating flooding event in the wake of Cyclone Jasper.

The couple would also travel to Lizard Island, an hour's flight north of the tropical city, where they have been offered the use of a luxury home and cottage — owned by Racing Queensland chairman Steven Wilson.

It is currently advertised at $30,000 a night, but the Queensland government said it would not cover the cost of accommodation.

Queensland's Tourism Minister Michael Healy said the king was no stranger to that part of the world — he holidayed on the picturesque Great Barrier Reef island during an unofficial trip in 1966 when he was aged 17.

"Others states and territories may be in a bidding war but Queensland is the obvious choice as the jewel in the crown of any royal visit," Mr Healy said.

"It also fits with his personal interests in disaster recovery and the climate as our region recovers from the devastating flooding impacts of post-Cyclone Jasper and coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef."

Ms Bastin said it would be "very hard" for the royal household to pass up Queensland.

"It seems to cover all the bases," she said.

"It would suit the king's personal agenda in that it's about the environment, sustainability … and the destruction of the natural environment — that is so much in his interest."

Western Australia's itinerary includes a visit to the WA Museum Boola Bardip, five renovated heritage buildings in the heart of Perth, and a walk along the Matagarup Bridge — a soaring pedestrian bridge.

The royal couple would also visit Rottnest Island, one of the state's most popular tourist destinations, for a Quokka spotting session.

"We have put forward a number of unique experiences for the king and queen to consider which showcase our state's incredible biodiversity, rich history and cultural offerings," a Western Australia government spokeswoman said.

"The UK is a priority tourism market for WA, with 111,000 visitors from the United Kingdom visiting in the year ending September 2023, injecting around $227 million into the state's economy."

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said a royal visit would not be complete without a trip to Sydney, the most "beautiful city on Earth".

The tour would include a visit to the Opera House, Bondi Beach and Harbour Bridge.

"I don't think you could really come to Australia and convince people back home that you've come to the country without coming to New South Wales, in particular Sydney," Mr Minns said.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said he wanted King Charles to see "what it means to be a Tasmanian".

"Whether it be our cool climate wines, unique heritage, reputation as a renewable energy powerhouse or craftsmanship, we hope to have the opportunity to show King Charles what makes Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family," he said.

Royal visits can generate millions but come at cost to taxpayers

Tourism experts say royal visits often result in a flurry of bookings and enquiries from visitors.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's visit to Australia in 2014 saw stunning photographs of some of Australia's most famed landmarks — including Uluru in the Northern Territory – showcased around the world.

Tourism Australia reported a 125 per cent increase in visitors from Great Britain to its website on the day of the couple's Uluru visit.

Daniel Gschwind from the Griffith Institute for Tourism said it was advertising that money could not buy.

"The king is one of the most famous people on the planet and he draws attention to the places he sees and visits," he said.

"The king will be travelling with hundreds of media representatives and it will certainly draw attention to the many attractions we do have."

Security and transport is typically paid for by the federal government, states and territories, but the royals pay for their accommodation.

But republicans say the cost of the tour should be footed entirely by the royal family.

Australian Republic Movement chief executive officer Isaac Jeffrey said the cost of royal visits often ran "into the millions".

"This gentleman from the other side of the world lives 17,000km away … He's got a $37 billion property portfolio and he makes hundreds of millions of pounds every year," he said.

"He could pay his own way. Australians are suffering at the moment from a cost-of-living crisis and we don't think that we should be footing the bill for rich international celebrities who only come to visit us every 10 years or so, for a couple of days."

Mr Jeffrey said he would like to see the king and queen venture beyond the capital cities.

"I think it'd be great to see the king and queen of Australia visiting regional Australia," Mr Jeffrey said.

"He could check out some of the big things — the Big Prawn in Ballina or the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour."

The king is yet to formally announce the tour, which would coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa in October.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge

Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.

A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide. 

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.

Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.

"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."

Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery. 

"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."

The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.

The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.
