Books & Guides

Ten years a nomad: a traveler’s journey home.

The book is a memoir of my ten years backpacking the world and the lessons I learned along the way. It follows the arc of a trip around globe: getting the bug, the planning, setting off, the highs, the lows, the friendships made, the relationships forged (and lost), and the emotions you feel when it’s all over.

Unlike my previous books, this is not a “how to” guide but a collection of insights, advice, and stories from the road meant to convey the experience of what it’s like to quit your job, follow the road not taken, and travel the world trying to discover who you are and what the world has to offer. It is my opus on travel meant to inspire you to pursue your own travel dreams.

About Nomad Africa Adventure Tours

Nomad’s story began in 1997 when Alex Rutherford, founder and owner of Nomad, was fortunate enough to have conducted a trans-Africa expedition lasting almost a year. On that journey he encountered numerous companies offering trips to Africa. A void was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was formed: Do it better and do it for less. In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years we’ve grown to a fleet of around 40 vehicles, 150 staff and 40 scheduled departures a month all over Africa. Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully. We have not forgotten the lessons learned in the early days. Still wholly independent, we remain owner-managed, ensuring passionate attention to quality tours every single day.

CURIOUS NOMAD TRAVEL

Curated journeys for the curious traveler.

ΚαλημΕρα! Good day!

Γεια σας! Hello! I'm Ashley Guyton, Founder and Operator of Curious Nomad Travel. Curious Nomad Travel is rooted in my lifelong belief that travel is the best form of education. Whether you travel to a place near or far, a curious mind and open heart can be greatly enriched by the unfamiliar...whether it be the setting, the people, the history, or all the above. Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you think you know, there’s always more to learn!

My family will tell you that I was born with an intense curiosity, love of learning, aptitude for organization and planning, and passion for exploration near and far. I founded Curious Nomad Travel in late 2018 to marry my skills and passions with purpose: to thoughtfully curate, culturally immersive, travel experiences that are informative, rejuvenating, and have the potential to open a traveler’s heart and mind to fresh perspectives on how you view the world and interact with others.

While our travel planning service often extends to the popular Cycladic Islands and cosmopolitan cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, our primary focus is curated travel to Crete . Crete offers a magical energy and rich diversity like no other place I have traveled in the world!

Curated Private Travel

Small group hosted trips.

We skillfully plan and execute curated culturally immersive trips to Crete for individuals and small groups. We are often asked “Why Crete?” Crete is unique as a Greek island in almost every aspect. As the largest Greek island, you need never board a ferry or plane to experience the diverse beauty, history, and culture of Greece…Crete offers layer upon rich layer!

Crete is at the same time both Greek and uniquely Cretan. Rugged and wild while equally elegant and peaceful. Rich with history, mythology, and cultural tradition, while heralded for achievements and pursuits in the modern world. Even the topography and climate express the contrasts that define Crete: the east is arid, the west more humid and verdant, the south sparsely populated, and the north denser with humans and development. Imposing snow covered, jagged mountain tops loom high above placid beaches and the welcoming warm, clear blue sea. Despite its physical size and vast contrasts, one thing remains constant. The people of Crete are proud, loving, and hospitable beyond measure!

With few exceptions, every single person I know that has traveled to Crete describes the island as magical. We spend several weeks each year in Crete, exploring her nooks and crannies, soaking up her extraordinary energy, cultivating treasured relationships with native Cretans, and  always  returning home with a deeper love for this enchanting place and her people.  This passion for and intimate knowledge of Crete is infused in each of the special travel experiences we create.

۞ We love Crete for her uniqueness…her vast history, exotic beauty, rich culture, and generous and hospitable people.

۞ We believe in our talented and committed partners and the skillfully designed travel experiences we consistently deliver.

۞ We believe that travel has the potential to broaden perspectives and even change lives.

“All my life one of my greatest desires has been to travel - to see and touch unknown countries, to swim in unknown seas, to circle the globe, observing new lands, seas, people, and ideas with insatiable appetite…” - Nikos Kazantzakis

What our guests see

What our guests say, send an email, curious nomad travel included experiences that you just can’t find on tripadvisor..

Sean and JayZ D.

We visited "off the beaten path" places that we would never have known to visit...

[With] a group trip, you end up putting a lot of trust in the organizer’s selections and recommendations.  Knowing Ashley’s attention to detail, we decided not to research it and go in with “fresh eyes.”  All I can say is WOW! We were not disappointed.

We  had opportunities to get to know locals and experience the authenticity of Greece. But most importantly the itinerary was designed to help us slow down, appreciate our surroundings, and reconnect with that sense of adventure and curiosity that can often get lost in the chaos of modern life.

Ashley is thoughtful and passionate about what she does and it comes through in every aspect of her planning. Our Greece trip is THE BEST international trip we have taken to date and I know that is in large part to the experiences curated by Ashley and beautifully delivered by her Greek partners. Thanks Ashley!

- Sean and JayZ D.

Life enhanced

Award winning camps. Safaris that change lives.

At Nomad our aim is simple, but ambitious. To harness the power of our award winning safaris in Tanzania to create life-enhancing opportunities wherever possible. For our clients, this is the promise of a safari with Nomad. That promise extends to our people and the communities in the remote places we operate, where talent is everywhere, but opportunity is thin on the ground.

Whether inspiring dynamic careers or supporting local suppliers, using our camps for medical outreach or funding free school meals, we know our business has the power to improve lives.

And it’s this that drives everything we do at Nomad.

Northern Tanzania

Our northern safaris will take you deep into the epic wilderness of Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, off the tourist trail, into extraordinary wildlife areas not to be missed.

Western Tanzania

A safari in Tanzania of extraordinary contrasts. Two of the most iconic parks in Africa the remote Katavi and our chimpanzee cousins in Mahale.

Southern Tanzania

This is all about experience. A Tanzania safari spent in the game rich plains of Ruaha and the endless wilderness of Nyerere, the south is hard to beat.

Our safaris in Tanzania

We’ve always had an enduring obsession with Tanzania’s wild places and our promise remains, giving you a truly original and exhilarating safari experience.

Nomad people

Nomad is our people. Many of us have been together from the beginning. Our family of staff is core to our success, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such a special bunch at Nomad.

A string of camps in some of the wildest places on the planet. A front row seat to the best wildlife in Africa. Backstage is the engine room for opportunity.

Standing proud above the plains, Lamai brings a Serengeti safari a different perspective.

Lamai Private

Lamai’s little sister, exclusively for private groups. Our private camp comes with all the appeal and flair of our main camp, plus the benefit of privacy for you and yours.

Mkombe's House

The only self-contained private house in the Serengeti wilderness.

Serengeti Safari Camp

Migration chasing mobile camp and a canvas home from home.

Our wild and elemental spot in the north-west edge of the Crater rim.

Entamanu Private

Entamanu Private is much more than a great vantage point from which to go to the Crater, this is a place to slowdown, breathe and feel Ngorongoro’s rhythms under your feet.

A light-footed bush camp hidden away in the heart of Tarangire.

A classic expeditionary camp in a million acres of animals.

Our famous jungle-chic lodge where we live and breathe chimpanzees.

Your very own private hideaway in the heart of Nyerere.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review 2024: Coverage for Adventurous Travelers

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

If you're looking for travel insurance that allows you to confidently participate in a wide range of sports and adventure activities around the world, then World Nomads Travel Insurance might be right for you. The company's policies cover travel to almost anywhere on the globe and are available to residents of nearly every country.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Summary

Among the best international travel insurance companies , World Nomads is particularly good at insuring athletes, covering well over 300 sports, including skydiving, bungee jumping, and golf. World Nomads is also a great last-minute purchase, allowing you to purchase coverage even after your trip has started. However, if you purchase a plan after departure, you will have to wait 72 hours before your plan kicks in.

That said, World Nomads lacks crucial coverage options, such as cancel for any reason coverage and coverage for pre-existing conditions. It also doesn't insure travelers older than 70.

Additionally, the service has received middling reviews from customers, averaging 3.4 stars out of five across 2,510 reviews. Customers often complained about their lengthy claims processes and poor customer service.

Some also took issue with the "Nomads" branding, as some travelers with multiple destinations and long-term trips found their trip wasn't covered by Nomads' specific policies. It's worth noting that World Nomads was very responsive to positive and negative reviews on Trustpilot.

World Nomads has two basic policies: Standard and Explorer. Each covers essentially the same things, but Explorer has higher amounts than World Nomads is willing to pay out for claims. The company's policies cover more than 150 specific activities. These range from bungee jumping and rock climbing to hang gliding and hot-air ballooning. You can see the full list on the company's website.

Additional Coverage Options (Riders)

One of the most common upgraded features of a travel insurance policy is cancel for any reason (CFAR) , where you really can cancel for reason beyond what's in a standard policy. This is not available on every policy, but it is often a feature that travelers are looking for while shopping for travel insurance before their trip. At this time, World Nomads doesn't offer CFAR coverage.

At the time of this review, World Nomads also offers sports equipment coverage. In February of 2022, it expanded coverage to include more than 150 sports and activities including Pickleball and FootGolf. It currently covers over 300 sports. So, as you can imagine, plans with sports coverage will cover virtually any sport you might play.

You can obtain a quote from World Nomads on its website by providing details about you and your trip. Be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your destination(s)
  • Duration of trip
  • Your country of residence
  • State of residence (if you're from the US)
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age

Notably, World Nomads does not ask you for the price of the trip, which many travel insurance companies factor into the trip of your policy. As such, World Nomads may be a good option if you're going on a particularly expensive trip.

We ran a few simulations to offer examples of how much a World Nomads policy might cost. You'll see that costs usually fall between 5% and 7% of the total trip cost, depending on the policy tier you choose.

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  World Nomads travel insurance quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $76.58
  • World Nomads Explorer: $123.34

Premiums for World Nomads's plans are well below the average cost of travel insurance .

World Nomads provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • World Nomads Standard: $85.83
  • World Nomads Explorer: $155.06

Once again, premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.2% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following World Nomads quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $152.96
  • World Nomads Explorer: $276.34

Premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.6% and 4.6%, once again below the average cost for travel insurance. This is especially impressive as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

World Nomads is particularly good at insuring traveling athletes, but let's see how it stacks up against the best travel insurance companies .

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance is a strong competitor against World Nomads, especially for travelers looking for a more business-oriented option. The company has been in business for more than 120 years and offers a wide range of insurance, not just travel-related, around the world. A key difference between World Nomads and Allianz Travel Insurance is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers travel insurance that can cover multiple trips in the same year. You can take an unlimited number of trips within the same calendar year, but you do have to double-check that all of your destinations are covered by the policy you select.

Another difference is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers for qualifying customers. World Nomads doesn't have the same coverage, requiring that the pre-existing condition is fully stable in order for limited coverage with respect to trip cancellations or having to end a trip early.

Read our Allianz travel insurance review here.

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. AIG Travel Guard

Travel Guard , a product backed by AIG Travel, is another potential alternative to World Nomads. AIG is a prominent player in the insurance industry, and the Travel Guard product represents true global coverage.

Unlike World Nomads, Travel Guard has coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, but there are conditions. Travelers must purchase their policy within 15 days of the initial trip payment to qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver.

Both travel insurance companies use a tiered approach, but Travel Guard has higher dollar amounts across the board. For example, trip cancellation for Travel Guard covers 100% of the trip cost, while with World Nomads the amount will depends on the tier of the coverage you purchase. Trip Interruption is also a fully covered event with Travel Guard's. Depending on the plan selected, it will either cover 100% or 150% of the trip cost.

If you're concerned about COVID-19 coverage with trip insurance, there's more coverage with World Nomads than Travel Guard. With Travel Guard, coverage for having to stay in a country past your original booking dates is an add-on, not a standard part of the policy.

Compare World Nomad vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you already have a major credit card in your wallet, you most likely have some travel insurance benefits that come with it. These benefits do vary from card to card. Be sure to check your card's specific policies.

Not all credit cards will feature travel insurance protection. The ones that do may have specific limitations. For example, many credit cards with travel protection require that your airfare is paid for with the card in question for protections to take effect.

Reimbursement isn't guaranteed. The credit cards do require that you file your claim and wait for a decision. World Nomads makes it easy to file a claim online and submit receipts and documentation. The response is fairly quick based on reviews from travelers who have actually had to file claims.

The more premium the credit card, the more likely expanded travel protections are part of its features. If you don't already have a premium credit card, it's better to get travel insurance. This is also the case if you have multiple trips planned. Some credit cards limit not just the total dollar amount, but the number of claims within a 12-month period.

Read our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance here.

Yes, you can extend your World Nomads plan while traveling, but you cannot upgrade a standard plan to the Explorer plan.

World Nomads covers COVID-19 like any other illness under its emergency medical coverage.

You can file a claim on World Nomads's website, over the phone, or by mail. Make sure to provide as much documentation as possible to ease the claims process.

World Nomads currently covers 326 sports and adventure activities, from ziplining to zorbing.

Yes, you can purchase World Nomads insurance for a trip that has already started. However, a policy purchased during your trip will have a 72-hour waiting period before insurance starts.

Top 10 Digital Nomad Travel Insurance Plans (2024)

A re you a digital nomad looking for the best travel insurance at the best price? You’re in the right place. I’ve been a digital nomad for over a year. I know how important travel insurance is.

I also know that, while this isn’t something to skimp on, you also don’t want to overpay. It’s a tricky balance.

I’m a huge over-planner and I’ve thoroughly researched travel insurance. Every year when my policy expires, I re-check the options to make sure I’ve got the best plan.

Don’t have time to read all this and just want the bottom line? My number one favorite travel insurance is SafetyWing . They have comprehensive coverage and consistently high ratings.

I’ve had to use my travel insurance more than once. The last time was when my dad was very sick in the hospital and I had to fly to California, losing out on a lot of pre-paid, nonrefundable flights and accommodations.

I’d like to say that story had a happy ending. While it did have a good ending for my dad (he’s recovered and doing great!), I had the wrong type of plan and lost $3,000. My insurance was essentially worthless for what I needed.

I don’t want anyone to have that same experience. I’ve rounded up the 10 best plans so you can choose the one that’s right for you. Learn from my mistakes so you don’t throw your money away.

Pro tip: Bookmark this site for next year. I update it yearly so it always contains the most up-to-date info.

What is Digital Nomad Travel Insurance?

Digital nomad travel insurance is tailored to meet the unique challenges and risks that come with the nomadic lifestyle.

Unlike regular travel insurance, these specialized plans often offer comprehensive medical coverage. This includes not just emergency care but also routine check-ups, dental services, and even mental health support.

But it’s not just about health. These plans also consider the flexibility digital nomads need. Many offer the option to extend your coverage if you decide to stay longer in a destination or even to buy coverage while you’re already abroad.

Some even cover adventurous activities, from scuba diving to mountain climbing, because let’s face it, a digital nomad’s life is never just 9 to 5.

So, while it might not be as thrilling as booking your next one-way ticket, securing the right travel insurance is a must for any digital nomad. It’s not just another item on your to-do list; it’s peace of mind, and that’s priceless.

What Should I Look For in Digital Nomad Insurance?

Okay, you know digital nomad insurance is a must-have. But with so many options out there, how do you pick the right one?

Here’s a breakdown of what you should be looking for in a digital nomad insurance plan:

Worldwide Coverage

You’re a global citizen, and your insurance should be too. Make sure the plan you choose offers worldwide coverage, so you’re protected no matter where your travels take you.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Got a chronic condition or a recurring medical issue? You’ll want a plan that covers pre-existing conditions, so you’re not left in a lurch when you need medical care.

Emergency Assistance

Look for a plan that offers 24/7 emergency assistance. Whether it’s a medical emergency or legal trouble, you want to know there’s a lifeline you can call anytime, anywhere.

Emergency Medical Insurance

Accidents happen, and when they do, you’ll want robust emergency medical coverage. This should include hospital stays, surgeries, and even medical evacuation if needed.

Emergency Evacuation

Speaking of evacuation, make sure your plan covers the cost of getting you to the nearest medical facility in case of an emergency. Trust me, you don’t want to foot that bill yourself.

Trip Cancellations and Delays

Flights get canceled. Plans change. Look for a policy that will reimburse you for any pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses if you have to cancel or delay your trip for a covered reason.

Baggage Loss

Losing your luggage is a bummer. Choose a plan that offers coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage to save yourself a headache later.

Equipment Protection

As a digital nomad, your laptop and other gadgets are your lifeline. Some plans offer specialized coverage for electronic equipment, so check if that’s an option.

Reasonable Prices

Budget is a big deal when you’re living the nomad life. Compare prices and make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. But remember, the cheapest option isn’t always the best.

Quick Insurance Claim Process

Last but not least, check out reviews to see how quickly and easily you can file a claim. The last thing you want during a crisis is a complicated, drawn-out claims process.

  • No Travel Benefits : If you’re looking for lost luggage or trip cancellation coverage, you’ll need to purchase separate travel insurance.
  • Long-Term Commitment : Policies are available only for a year or more, so it’s not ideal for short-term travelers.
  • No Direct Billing : You’ll have to pay medical providers upfront and wait for a reimbursement, which can take up to 10 days.
  • Cost Considerations : While the coverage is comprehensive, remember that the pricing is for medical insurance only. It’s more like a health plan you’d have at home, including wellness visits and routine check-ups.

So, if you’re a digital nomad planning to be on the road for an extended period and want comprehensive healthcare coverage, Integra Global is worth considering.

Final Thoughts: Digital Nomad Travel Insurance

Now that we’ve taken a deep dive into the world of digital nomad travel insurance it’s clear there are a lot of options out there.

After trying a few different travel insurance providers, my top pick is SafetyWing Insurance. They’ve consistently received high ratings and offer a variety of plans that cater to the unique needs of digital nomads like us.

From personal experience, I can tell you that having the right travel insurance is a game-changer. But here’s the kicker—you’ve got to read the fine print. I learned this the hard way.

When I first dipped my toes into the digital nomad lifestyle, I bought an annual policy thinking I was all set. What I didn’t realize was that it only covered trips up to 30 days. So, when I had to file a claim because my dad got sick, it was denied.

Why? Because I was away from home for four months. My one “trip” exceeded the 30-day limit, making my policy pretty much useless for my digital nomad lifestyle.

Yep, this was all in the policy information. It was entirely my own fault.

So, take it from someone who’s been there—make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into before you hit that “purchase” button. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Digital nomad travel insurance is super important, but also intimidating. I've done all the research so you can choose the best policy for you.

Don't forget these 5 gadgets when you travel this week

1549928918804.jpg

As a tech journalist, I often travel across the US -- and sometimes out of it -- to attend product launch events, trade shows, and other briefings for news that readers care about. It certainly helps to be based in New York City, where most of the gadgetry madness tends to occur, but when I am out and about (for work or play), there's a bag full of tech that I always have with me.

My treasure trove of electronics has evolved over recent years, transitioning to newer GaN chargers and more capable yet still portable camera systems . The five picks below are among my current arsenal of travel tech, and if you're traveling this week for the Fourth of July holiday, I highly encourage packing a few of these items into your carry-on.

I'll make this a little more exciting for you by stating the obvious: My phone and a reliable Bluetooth tracker are always with me, so I've opted not to put them on this list. Instead, you'll find products I've personally tested that are useful enough for you to consider for your next adventure.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3

While smartphone cameras have become very capable at capturing life's moments, I still prefer the enhanced stabilization and portability of a dedicated pocket camera, especially when I'm recording smooth-panning videos of product demos and scenery. The camera I've most recently settled on is the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, famous for its ability to record up to 4K resolution through a one-inch CMOS sensor. The output I've gotten has been reliable and impressive, both for vertical and horizontal footage, which can be set by physically swiveling the touchscreen viewfinder.

Does carrying an additional camera feel unnecessary? Not when the quality is noticeably better and it greatly reduces the battery consumption you'd otherwise put on your phone when recording videos. Reddit users who have used the Osmo Pocket 3 seem to agree, with the added benefits being better audio recording, improved video stabilization, and a larger sensor for more dramatic shots.

Lenovo Go Wireless Power Bank 10,000mAh

Lenovo's power bank may look unassuming, but trust me when I say there's more to it than what meets the eye. Besides having a 10,000mAh capacity, meaning there's enough juice to power a phone (and other accessories like earbuds) two to three times, a fairly long USB-C cable is built into the battery pack, saving you the hassle of carrying a separate one.

Here's the second trick: the Lenovo Go can wirelessly charge Qi-supported devices when you place them on top of the accessory, allowing you to charge two devices at once (via wired and wireless) if you're feeling adventurous.

While the charge output is capped at 30W, many customers on Lenovo's website have found the power bank adequate for powering phones, tablets, and earbuds, and have been particularly satisfied with the built-in charging cable.

Ayaneo Flip

I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, but I've found traveling, especially when on long flights, to be the perfect opportunity to get my NBA 2K and Rocket League fix. Lately, my vehicle of choice for gaming has been the Ayaneo Flip, a Windows-powered handheld with Nintendo DS written all over it, from the dual touchscreen displays to the ergonomic shoulder triggers. Thanks to the OS and a capable AMD Ryzen 7 processor, I've been able to play Steam and Epic Games titles right on the device at medium to high graphic settings.

The big question mark with the Ayaneo Flip is its price point and availability, according to several interested Reddit users. With a starting price of $699, the Flip can best be justified by those who want a competent, on-the-go gaming handheld that can also be used for standard PC tasks like web browsing, streaming videos, and emailing. One of the Flip's most underrated features is the ability to output to a monitor or TV screen for a gaming experience more similar to standard consoles.

Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses

While the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses are fantastic for recording hands-free videos, I've found them more practical as a wearable tour guide. Thanks to recent Meta AI updates , the glasses can pull context from what's in front of you, whether it's a monument, statue, or restaurant storefront, and answer your most burning questions. I've used the smart glasses to identify unfamiliar landmarks, tell me the most popular food items at a local restaurant, play music from artists from the city that I've traveled to, and more.

The general sentiment toward the Meta Ray-Bans has been mostly positive, with Reddit users favoring the ease of use, comfort, and various capabilities. The price point of the glasses, starting at $299, is fairly competitive as well.

Nomad 65W Slim Power Adapter

Besides carrying a portable battery pack, I also travel with Nomad's 65 Slim Power Adapter, which fields two USB-C ports to charge tablets, phones, earbuds, and even laptops, like my MacBook Air. To help with portability, the prongs are collapsible, the charger is very slim, and it lies flush when plugged into the outlet. Carrying the accessory around is like carrying a pack of mints.

Customers, including ZDNET's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, have expressed satisfaction with Nomad's 65W Slim Power Adapter, appreciating the speedy power delivery and support for two USB-C inputs. I especially recommend this charging adapter for users with ultraportable devices like lightweight and smaller laptops and iPads.

Why should you trust me?

When I'm not writing about technology, I'm probably working overtime as my family's IT support guy. And when I'm not working at all, I'm likely watching, reading, or consuming some form of content about technology. So when I make product recommendations, I suggest gadgets I've personally tested and have proven to deliver the value (if not more value) that manufacturers promise.

My main expertise is mobile, from phones to wearables to accessories, which plays hand-in-hand with the topic of this story. I also travel about 10 times throughout the year, including from New York to California, so I've developed an understanding of which gadgets are essential and which are optional.

How do you pack electronics for traveling?

When traveling, storing any devices with lithium-ion batteries, such as laptops, tablets, and power banks, in your carry-on baggage is best. If my gadgets aren't already stored in a tech pouch or cushioned bag, I'll surround them with clothing to prevent any damage during travel.

Other travel-friendly tech we think you'd love

How some young Canadians are saving money by embracing the digital nomad lifestyle

Lower cost of living, chance to travel the world can be appealing to remote workers.

Social Sharing

Sitting in a bright, plant-filled coffee shop in the town of Písac, Peru — natural light filtering in from a skylight above — Grayson Allen explains that he's always wanted to work abroad.

The 30-year-old content creator from Vancouver is a self-described digital nomad, a term for people who perform their jobs remotely from anywhere in the world.

For the last two and a half years, he has worked remotely in the U.K., Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and, most recently, Peru — first for a Canadian company and now for himself.

"It seems like the dream, you know? You get to kind of save money, it's [a] cheaper cost of living, you get to travel on the weekends still," Allen told CBC News via Zoom.

"The country's happy because you're spending money there. Canada's still happy because you're paying taxes even though you're not using any of the services there."

Faced with the high cost of living at home, some travellers are turning to digital nomadism to save money — and countries from Portugal to Japan to Barbados have made this arrangement easier by introducing digital nomad visas intended for hybrid work and travel (Canada has also announced its own digital nomad strategy ).

Since he started "nomading" on temporary visas, Allen said he's repaid most of the student loans he incurred from a master's degree in the U.K. and at one point was saving two-thirds of his paycheque while working remotely.

"A lot of people I know in Vancouver, they're just surviving," he said. "My angle is kind of more like, well, if I do want to live in Vancouver in the future, I better make some good money."

A man is pictured outside with his arms outstretched.

Canadians likely in the U.S., Mexico, says researcher

Digital nomadism exploded in popularity when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a dramatic increase in people working remotely. One study found that 40 million people worldwide identify as digital nomads , most of them from the United States, where a report found that 17.3 per cent of American workers see themselves as digital nomads.

"There's quite a lot of talk about digital nomad visas at the moment, and they're all quite confusing, they're all quite different. But none of those existed before the pandemic," said David Cook, an anthropologist at University College London who researches digital nomads.

Long before the pandemic normalized the arrangement and countries and workplaces started implementing these programs formally, the cost of living was a major consideration for digital nomads, he said.

  • Canada wants to woo 'digital nomads.' Can we compete?
  • Canada to launch 'digital nomad strategy,' other measures to woo international talent

"Digital nomads are quite a broad group. Not all are very high net-worth individuals who are earning lots of money. Some are, but not everyone is," Cook said.

The combination of remote work and travel has led to growing concerns in some hot spots in Latin America, Europe and Southeast Asia that digital nomads and other tourists are pushing locals out of affordable housing  and driving up prices.

Cook said Canadian digital nomads are more likely to be hunkering down in the U.S. or Mexico than in Southeast Asian or East Asian countries, for example, because the similar time zones make remote work more seamless.

COVID restrictions boosted phenomenon

But it remains unclear how many Canadians have adopted this lifestyle. More than 11 per cent of the Canadian population is currently living abroad, according to  an April 2024 report from the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, based at McGill University in Montreal.

It's hard to know how many of those are digital nomads who are working remotely for a Canadian company, said Sen. Yuen Pau Woo, who commissioned the McGill report to shed light on Canada's large diaspora.

  • Digital nomads want to work from anywhere. Some worry that's creating problems for local communities

"My hunch is that they would constitute a very small proportion of the 4.3 million or more Canadians living overseas," Woo told CBC News. "They will also be a relatively newer phenomenon, given that the ability to work remotely, broadly speaking, is fairly recent [and] obviously amplified by COVID restrictions."

The federal government doesn't directly track Canadians leaving the country, a spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirmed in an email to CBC News. Most of the data available is from what Woo refers to as "indirect sources."

Mexico City struggles with wave of remote workers

CBC News reached out to embassies and programs in the Bahamas, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Korea, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Seychelles.

There were few responses, but Costa Rica's tourism board said seven Canadians were approved for the country's digital nomad visa between Jan. 1 and April 30 this year.

A spokesperson for the Canadian Embassy in Portugal said it is "aware of a growing number of Canadian visa holders in Portugal, particularly among digital nomads in Lisbon over the past two years, although we lack specific quantitative data to contribute."

  • Emigration from Canada to the U.S. hits a 10-year high as tens of thousands head south

Iolanda Andrade, an immigration lawyer based in Lisbon, counts about 10 to 15 Canadians among her clients — all of whom are digital nomads entering Portugal either using the designated nomad visa or a passive income visa called the D7.

While it depends on the country issuing them, digital nomad visas have certain restrictions that limit their accessibility, including a minimum income requirement. In Portugal, applicants to the digital nomad visa need to be earning at least four times the country's minimum wage.

"Normally it's very easy for a Canadian resident or citizen to have the requirements that this type of visa asks for," Andrade said.

Housing costs in Canada a factor in going abroad

As for whether it's a concern that Canadians might be leaving on digital nomad visas because of cost-of-living issues, Woo said he doesn't think the phenomenon should be overstated — least of all because it remains unknown how many Canadians are using these visas abroad.

"The fact that they continue to maintain ties with Canada through work says something about their attachment to the country," he said.

Some Canadians feel differently. Azra Kassam, a 34-year-old digital content manager, arrived in Calgary from Kenya when she was young and spent most of her adult life in Toronto.

A woman is shown standing in front of a colourful building.

Kassam used a digital nomad visa in Croatia last year, went back to visit recently and plans to use the visa again when she returns in September.

Originally, cost wasn't a factor in her decision to apply for the visa. But when housing prices started to skyrocket, it became a more important consideration.

"I think there's a lot of that sentiment going around right now ... you know, the country was supposed to take care of me and they haven't. And it's making me want to go find a new life somewhere else, which is pretty sad," Kassam told CBC News.

  • First Person What this digital nomad learned during the COVID-19 lockdown
  • Where can you afford to rent in Canada?

She estimates that she's saving about $1,000 a month working remotely in Croatia for her Toronto-based company. She's   established a WhatsApp community for digital nomads and expats in Croatia that now has 500 members, including some Canadians.

"I don't plan on really living in Canada any time soon," Kassam said.

"If I could spend $2,200 on a one bedroom in Toronto or if I could spend $2,200 and that gives me flights, a place to live, groceries, fun things to do — why would I not choose the second one?"
