Big Bus New York offers a hop-on, hop-off tour that features 18 stops at major attractions like Bryant Park, Broadway and St. Patrick's Cathedral, with prerecorded commentary provided along the way. Double-decker buses frequent stops every 20 minutes on the Red Line (which runs through downtown) and every 30 minutes on uptown's Blue Line. The Essential Ticket, which is valid for one day, grants you access to the 90-minute downtown and 75-minute uptown routes and lets you add on extras like tickets for Madame Tussauds, the Empire State Building or a harbor cruise. The Big Bus is easy to spot: bright red, open top, and double-decker. This classic bus tour provides a thorough introduction to Manhattan, with two routes, the downtown red loop, and the uptown blue route – and hop-on, hop-off service for stopping at top landmarks along the way. Take a seat in the open-air top deck and instead of traveling by subway (where you see nothing as you move between neighborhoods), you will see New York’s famous street life as the bus travels between the Financial District, Chinatown, Greenwich Village, and Chelsea . Meet your Guide and Begin your New York City Bus Tour

Our half-day New York City bus tour departs daily at 9 AM and 10 AM on 7th Ave between 50th & 51st Streets (in the middle of the block) and ends at 3 PM and 4 PM at the same location. Meet your driver and guide, and take a seat aboard your comfortable bus to begin.

After a drive through the Times Square area, our first stop is at Central Park West and 72nd Street, at the Dakota Building (former home of John Lennon). The stop includes a short, guided walk into Central Park to visit the Strawberry Fields. Here, discover the Imagine mosaic dedicated to John Lennon and admire fine views over the celebrity-owned condominiums. We’ll also drive by Central Park Zoo, the famous Plaza Hotel, and Carnegie Hall.

Rockefeller Center

The second stop on our tour is Rockefeller Center, where beautiful views over St. Patrick’s Cathedral await. We’ll also see the location of the winter ice-skating rink and Christmas Tree, and NBC’s Today Show set.

5th Avenue and Empire State Building Views

Our third stop is on Fifth Avenue, where we pause to admire the iconic Empire State Building. This area also provides spectacular views of dramatic architecture featured in numerous books and films, including the Flatiron Building (Godzilla, Spider-Man), the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower (The Runaway Skyscraper, Futurama), and of course the Empire State Building (King Kong, Independence Day).

World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial

Our fourth stop is the World Trade Center, where we visit the 9/11 Memorial. The tour does not include entry into the 9/11 Museum, but visitors can walk the grounds of the Memorial, visit the waterfalls of “Reflecting Absence,” (the footprints of where the original twin towers stood), and see the Survivor Tree that withstood the destruction of 9/11.

Gansevoort Liberty Market Lunch Stop

Around 1 pm, we’ll stop for a quick lunch break at Gansevoort Liberty Market. Lunch is not included on your tour, but this is a great place to stop and pick up something tasty.

The Staten Island Ferry Ride

Our fifth stop is the Whitehall Terminal in downtown Manhattan, for a boat ride on the Staten Island ferry. During your relaxing cruise, soak up magnificent views over the Statue of Liberty to the Manhattan and Brooklyn skyline beyond. The boat docks back at the Whitehall Terminal, where we board our bus to head back to our original departure point on 7th Avenue in the Times Square area. Our tour concludes at 3 PM and 4 PM, back where it began.

The tour was on a small open-air bus and it was a small group of 13 people. The tour included a combination of walking (very short distances) and sightseeing on the bus for 6 hours. Our tour guide Steve was outstanding!! However, Manhattan is not the only district in New York. You can find much cheaper accommodation in Long Island City, Queens, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. New York City generally experiences cold winters, wet springs, hot humid summers, and cool dry autumns. In winter, the temperature can decrease to -18 o C and during the summer, be prepared for the temperature to go up to 38 o C sometimes. Snowstorms are regular during the winter months, but the snow rarely lies longer, than for a couple of days. Also, tropical storms can hit the city during summer time and in September. So, keep that in mind.

As with most bus services in New York, the negative comments focused mostly on long wait times and audio systems not working properly.

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

• After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
• Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
• When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
• If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

• Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
• Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
• Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
• You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

The New York Rangers have hockey fans in New York City buzzing, and as the Rangers take to the ice in Madison Square Garden for their first-round series against the Washington Capitals, fans in the city will be able to see the sights in a special Zamboni-themed tour bus.

The route will take riders from outside Madison Square Garden south on 8th Avenue, loop around New York University and head back north along 5th Avenue past the Flatiron Building and the Empire State Building. Field size?

The are 160 players comprising 80 two-man teams.

How are the teams determined?

The Tour goes down its priority rankings. Players who commit to the tournament get to choose their partner as long as they have some kind of PGA Tour status or receive a sponsor exemption.

What is the format?

The teams will compete in fourballs (best ball) in Rounds 1 and 3, and in foursomes (alternate shot) in Rounds 2 and 4.

Is there a cut?

Yes. The top 33 teams and ties after 36 holes will qualify for the final two rounds.

What happens if there is a playoff after 72 holes?

The teams will compete in sudden-death, alternating formats (foursomes on the first extra hole; fourballs on the second extra hole; so forth).

What do the winners receive?

Both men will get a two-year exemption on Tour and spots in the PGA Championship and signature events, as well as next year’s Sentry and Players Championship. It counts as an official Tour win for both players, though, no Official World Golf Ranking points are given.

Players will be paid out in an every-two-spots manner. So the winning team will evenly split first- and second-place earnings ($1,286,050 for each player) and first- and second-place FedExCup points (400 for each winner).

The thrash metal group is currently midway through their ongoing ‘Crush The World Tour’ that wraps up with a festival appearance at Portugal’s Evil Live in late June.

Rather than pump the brakes, Dave Mustaine and co. are going full throttle into August and September with their newly announced ‘Destroy All Enemies Tour’ with Mudvayne and All That Remains.

On the 33-concert trek, they’ll make three New York stops.

First, Megadeth will mosh their way into Albany’s MVP Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

After, that, the quartet is slated to headbang at Bethel’s Bethel Woods Center For The Arts on Friday, Sept. 13 and Wantagh’s Jones Beach Theater on Saturday, Sept. 14.

“We are all playing tight, and that has made it possible for me to really focus on solos and singing,” Mustaine shared in a press release about the ‘Crush The World Tour.’ “We are playing more songs than ever before, and we are closer to each other, onstage AND off.”

Columbia University protests continue for 4th day after more than 100 arrested

NEW YORK -- Tensions are high at Columbia University over the Israel-Hamas war and the school's response to ongoing protests on campus. 

School administrators have restricted campus access to students and staff with university IDs.

Saturday marked the fourth day of pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the school. A large group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the university gates, while inside, students were back out on the main lawn.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have been occupying the lawn for several days . Video from overhead showed protesters sprawling on sleeping bags and mats Friday, with banners and Palestinian flags laid out around them. They are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and for the university to divest from Israel.

The NYPD arrested more than 100 people Thursday at the encampment they set up on the main lawn, as demonstrations continued on and off the school's campus in Upper Manhattan. 

"I didn't think there was a safety concern at all, because they were actually passing out food to everybody coming by, they were really interacting. It was really nice to see, actually, the community coming together on both sides," one student told CBS New York. 

Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at the school, says Jewish students have felt threatened since Oct. 7 and the arrests just show "all of the student organizers, all of the radicals, they're all in there right now."

Right now, the NYPD has barricaded areas outside the university, but they say they have not entered and do not plan on entering the campus Friday. No violence has been reported.

School officials have warned unauthorized protests will lead to more suspensions, but students say they won't back down.

The conflict has spread beyond campus, impacting those in the neighboring community. One man who lives in the area was putting up flyers of those taken hostage by Hamas, trying to put the focus back on them.

More than 100 protesters arrested

Police monitored activities near campus for most of the day Thursday and made some arrests before confronting students at the makeshift tent city. Officers in riot gear shut down the street at 114th Street and Broadway with seven correctional buses, and then removed students from the encampment. 

"We were walking around different parts of campus to occupy that space and demand that our voices be heard," one Columbia student said. "And when I showed up, everybody had already been arrested." 

"One by one, these cops got each of the encampment protesters sitting down and standing up and put them in zip ties and walked them," another student said. "It's a very difficult time for a lot of people. I think it's unfortunate that it's come down to this." 

"Clearly, as you see, the school does not have any effort to help protect the students who are peacefully protesting," pro-Palestinian protester and student Jin Hookky said.

Students were detained on the buses before being taken to the precinct. The vast majority of the 113 people arrested were given summonses for trespassing.

"New Yorkers have every right to express their sorrow, but that heartbreak does not give you the right to harass others, to spread hate," Mayor Eric Adams said.

Demonstrations at the school's main entrance continued throughout the day and into the night, leading, at times, to violent confrontations with counter-protesters and, subsequently, more arrests.

University President Shafik addresses protests, arrests

In a letter , Columbia University President Minouche Shafik asked the NYPD to move in, writing "I have determined that the encampment and related disruptions pose a clear and present danger to the substantial functioning of the University." 

"With great regret, we request the NYPD's help to remove these individuals," she wrote.

Shafik said all university students participating in the encampment are being suspended. 

"I regret that all of these attempts to resolve the situation were rejected by the students involved. As a result, NYPD officers are now on campus and the process of clearing the encampment is underway," Shafik wrote in the statement to the Columbia community . 

The students were warned to leave the encampment by 9 p.m. Wednesday, Shafik wrote. 

"Columbia is committed to allowing members of our community to engage in political expression – within established rules and with respect for the safety of all," Shafik wrote. 

Rep. Ilhan Omar's daughter suspended

Barnard College suspended three students, including Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar , for participating in the protests. Hirsi said on social media she and others at the encampment would continue protesting until their demands are met. 

Demonstrations started on Wednesday  before administrators locked down campus amid dueling protests between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups. Police said one person was arrested. 

Protests intensified Thursday morning and more arrests were made as small pro-Palestinian demonstrations took place outside Columbia's campus gates.

Some demonstrators expressed discontent with how police handled the situation.

"There was no point of ever working with the police. Like every single step of the way, they were escalating it," a protester named Selena said.

 According to protesters, police started detaining them for blocking the entrance to the subway, which they said was not the case.

"Not allowing us to exercise any of our rights," Selena said.

Protests continue after Columbia's president testifies

Demonstrations began when Shafik testified Wednesday on Capitol Hill, where she was accused of failing to discipline students for antisemitic rhetoric .

In her testimony, Shafik said reconciling students' right to free speech with the rights of Jewish students to learn in an environment free from discrimination has been a central challenge on campus since Oct. 7.

"Coming on the heels of the heavy-handed pressure from Congress to clamp down on student protests that's critical of Israel and being so excessive, calling in the police, it raises concerns about Columbia's commitment to free speech on campus," said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

"I think when a huge majority of Jewish students are saying we feel uncomfortable, we experience antisemitism, those concerns should be taken seriously," student Natan Rosenbaum said.

"I had to move to a different dorm because the harassment was getting really bad," said a Columbia student who says she supports Israel.

On the other side, there's criticism Shafik has gone too far.

"They care more about their shareholders than the students. For this entire year, I have not felt any type of safety, and they claim that they are doing this under the guise of safety," Columbia student Kimberly Boatena said.

"Our goal is not to be against Jewish people. Our goal is simply to say we don't agree with what Israel, the government of Israel, is doing in the Middle East," Hookky said.

The NYPD says it will continue to work closely with the school for the rest of the semester if the administration again reports to police that their rules are being violated.

Bus stations. Traffic stops. Beaches. There’s no telling where you’ll find the next story in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Peace Adzo Medie shares some of her favorites.

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

Accra is rich with stories, some of them only a few words long — Still Hustling; Work Hard and Dream Big; Short Ways Are Dangerous — and written in bold letters on the rear windows of tro tros, the ubiquitous minibuses that ferry residents and visitors around the city. These mantras are meant to represent the people who own the buses. But they also tell of life in Accra, and what it takes to make it in this vibrant city.

Accra, Ghana’s capital, is in the southern part of the country and borders the Atlantic Ocean. For centuries, its coastline has served as an entry point for people both from neighboring countries and from farther away. Ghanaian writers have found rich material in the city, the home of the Ga people. And writers from other African countries and the diaspora, such as Wole Soyinka and Maya Angelou, have called Accra home, even if only for a short time.

Though much of Accra’s creative activity has taken place in centers like the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, interest in stories and books permeates the city.

Merchants selling books line many thoroughfares. There is a good chance that, when you stop at a major traffic light, a bookseller, wares in hand, will come to your window and try to get you to buy at least one. Even bus stations can be a treasure trove. One of my favorite activities as a teenager was shopping for books at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a busy bus station in the heart of the city, where volumes are neatly arranged in stalls or on canvas spread out on the ground. And when I didn’t have enough money for a book, Accra still came through for me: I could always read and imagine the stories behind the one-liners on the buses idling nearby.

What should I read before I pack my bags?

Nii Ayikwei Parkes’s “ Tail of the Blue Bird ” brings the city to life. This slim novel is set in Accra and Sonokrom, a small village. Kayo, a forensic pathologist working in Accra, has been forced by a high-ranking police officer to investigate a sinister discovery in the village.

The novel’s lyrical prose and rich dialogue, which incorporates Ghanaian words and phrases, make it delightful to read. Through Kayo’s work, outings with friends and encounters with the police, we see different aspects of life in Accra, while his time in Sonokrom and interactions with the village’s intriguing inhabitants offer a glimpse of how people outside the center relate to the city.

If you prefer nonfiction, Ato Quayson’s “ Oxford Street, Accra: City Life and the Itineraries of Transnationalism ” offers an excellent introduction to the city. It takes the reader on a journey through Accra’s history, showing its evolution from a fishing village to a port town during British colonial rule, to a vibrant metropolis that draws in people from around the country and the world. With Oxford Street, a bustling commercial corridor, as a starting point, Quayson evokes the sights and sounds of the city with keen attention to how people interact with each other and their surroundings. Forays into the salsa and gym scenes underline the transnational dimensions of life in Accra.

What books or authors should I bring along with me?

Accra is at the heart of Yepoka Yeebo’s “ Anansi’s Gold: The Man Who Looted the West, Outfoxed Washington, and Swindled the World .” This work of nonfiction is a wild ride about one of the boldest scams of the 1970s and ‘80s, carried out by John Ackah Blay-Miezah, a charismatic Ghanaian. Blay-Miezah promised huge returns to thousands of investors from around the world, tied to a bogus trust fund allegedly set up by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. While Blay-Miezah targeted victims across the world, his dealings with government officials and other businesspeople in Accra facilitated his scam and, ultimately, contributed to its end. The book is a meticulously researched and riveting account of politics and money in post-independence Ghana.

Fictional stories of murder can also be doorways into Accra. In “ Sleep Well My Lady ,” by Kwei Quartey, a female detective’s investigation of a murder offers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and the not-so-rich of the city. In Kobby Ben Ben’s “ No One Dies Yet ,” Accra is the scene of mystery and sex, in a meeting of Ghana and its diaspora.

What books can show me other facets of the city?

There is always something to discover in Accra, even for people who are already familiar with the city. It helps to know the right people, though — or at least the right books.

“ Accra Noir ,” edited by Nana-Ama Danquah, is a collection of 13 stories set throughout pockets of the city. Their characters encounter the kind of sky-high hurdles that a thriving, cutthroat metropolis puts in the way of its residents — unemployment, corruption, abuse of power. And, determined to make it, these characters do not hesitate to adopt creative and extreme methods, often in places that are hidden from view: hotel rooms and bedrooms, dark alleys and a market at night.

Serena Owusua Dankwa’s “ Knowing Women: Same Sex-Intimacy, Gender, and Identity in Postcolonial Ghana ” is also about finding joy when the conditions are unyielding. It is a study of same-sex desire among women and of their relationships, which happen in every part of Ghana, yet aren’t typically visible in the open. The historical discussion of same-sex desire and intimacy in Ghana, and Africa more broadly, is illuminating, and dislodges widely held reductive ideas about the subject. Dankwa’s interviews with women, including female athletes, both in Accra and in a midsize town, reveal a great deal about desire and intimacy and the influences of class and social norms.

If I have no time for day trips, what books should I read instead?

Books of poetry are one way to travel around Ghana. Kofi Anyidoho’s collection “The Place We Call Home” is rhythmic in its treatment of history and the present. Anyidoho is also the editor of a book of poetry by another Ghanaian great, Kofi Awoonor. “The Promise of Hope: New and Selected Poems, 1964-2013” beautifully renders life in Ghana and abroad.

“The Girl Who Can,” by Ama Ata Aidoo, a writer with a towering legacy , is a collection of stories that explores girlhood and womanhood. Aidoo’s novel “Changes: A Love Story” chronicles one woman’s attempts to live and love on her own terms.

For books that take you on journeys into the past, start with Ayi Kwei Armah’s “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born.” This classic of Ghanaian literature unfolds during the 1960s and follows an unnamed railway clerk determined to stay on the straight and narrow path — unlike others around him. “ The Hundred Wells of Salaga, ” by Ayesha Harruna Attah, is set in the 19th century. In this novel, the trade in enslaved people plays a major role in changing the lives of two young women. Yaa Gyasi’s “ Homegoing ” goes further back, to the 18th century, to narrate the outcomes of one family’s encounters with the West.

What’s a good place to curl up with a book on a day off?

Accra is a city of beaches and, in addition to sunshine and a cool breeze, a few of its waterfronts have the ambience that make for a good reading experience. But I’m partial to green spaces, many of which are beyond the city limits. Aburi, in the Eastern Region, is a short drive outside Accra. Situated on a hill, the town is cool and has several spots where you can curl up with a book while enjoying the lush scenery.

School buses in NY must go electric by 2035. One district has plans on how to do it
