Biebrich Palace

The Biebrich Palace enjoys a picturesque location on the banks of the mighty Rhine , and boasts a beautifully maintained park with walkways and towering trees. This gorgeous three-wing Baroque palace was built in 1702 and served as the residence of the Dukes of Nassau from 1744 to 1866.

15 Best Things to Do in Wiesbaden (Germany)

The capital of the state of Hesse, Wiesbaden is a spa town on mineral springs that have been harnessed since the Romans. The city has all the regal architecture and rarefied air of a 19th-century resort. There are stately monuments like the glass-domed Kurhaus (Spa House), dainty gardens and old-world infrastructure like a funicular train from 1888 that still uses water ballast to travel up and down the Neroberg hill.

Under the control of the House of Nassau for hundreds of years, Wiesbaden was also the home of dukes, whose properties still enrich the cityscape. And it isn’t just the water that gives Wiesbaden its health-giving reputation: The climate in this south-facing city is a little warmer than the rest of the Rhine Valley, and optimal for making Riesling wine.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Wiesbaden :

1. Nerobergbahn

Nerobergbahn

The train shuttling to the top of the Neroberg to the north of Wiesbaden is one of the only funicular railways in the world still using water ballast as a propulsion system.

Water is pumped into the train at the top of the hill to make it heavier than the one at the bottom, and as this train descends the slope, a steel cable pulls the up-bound car to the top.

No other railways in Germany still use this propulsion method, which has functioned since the 440-metre line opened in 1888. In three and a half minutes you’ll ascend more than 80 metres on a gradient as steep as 19.5%.

2. Neroberg

Classical Monopteros Temple

You’ll know why you made the trip to the top of this 245-metre hill as soon as you arrive as there’s a superb view of the Rhine Valley as far as the city of Mainz to the south.

In 1851 the architect Philipp Hoffmann built a small mountain park on the peak, dotted with monuments and amenities.

The centrepiece is a Classical Monopteros temple, where the best view of Wiesbaden can be had.

A hotel built on the crest of the hill burnt down in 1989, leaving a solitary tower, now occupied by a restaurant.

There’s also a sleek, Art Deco-style open air pool, the Opelbad, a rope course with 80 obstacles in the forest and an amphitheatre for summer events.

And finally, under a terrace created as a memorial to the First World War, there’s a 4.1-hectare vineyard growing Riesling grapes.

Kurhaus

Wiesbaden’s main spa building is glorious Neoclassical building with Art Nouveau flourishes, most memorably in the metal and glass dome.

The building and its opulent ballrooms are put to a few purposes, as the venue for high-profile events, as well as Wiesbaden’s high-stakes casino and a posh restaurant.

Most of the time you’ll be able to get inside the foyer for photos of that dome, the stained glass at the entrance and the statues and frescoes of Greek gods.

Also take a turn around the grounds, made up of the Bowling Green and its fountains on the west side.

Kurpark

On the east side of the Kurhaus is the English-style Kurpark, which was landscaped in 1852. Right in front of the Kurhaus is the Kurpark Weiher, an ornamental lake with a fountain that shoots a water jet six metres in the air.

You can hire boat for the lake and by the water on the west shore are benches, cafe terraces and an outdoor stage.

When Germany competes at a major football tournament a big screen is set up in the Kurpark, and other big events like a concert by Sting and an address by the Dalai Lama have been attended by thousands.

On Nizzaplätzchen you can also view what’s left of the portico from the old Kurhaus, which was pulled down over 100 years ago to make way for the new one.

5. St Elizabeth’s Church

St Elizabeth's Church

Also on Neroberg is a Russian Orthodox church completed in 1855. This was built by Duke Adolf of Nassau as a memorial to his Russian wife, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna who died in childbirth.

Adolf built the church around her tomb and entrusted the designs to Philipp Hoffmann who studied Orthodox architecture especially for the project.

The church is dedicated to Elizabeth, his wife’s patron saint.

Outside see the gilded onion domes and head around to the cemetery, one of Western Europe’s oldest Russian Orthodox burial places.

And inside you can view the iconostasis, by the Estonian-German painter Carl Timoleon von Neff and Elizabeth’s tomb.

6. Marktkirche

Marktkirche

The central tower of this captivating Neo-Gothic church climbs almost 100 metres above Wiesbaden’s central Schlossplatz.

When construction was finished in 1862 this was the largest- brick-built construction in the Duchy of Nassau.

It had to be capacious to meet the needs of a population that had doubled in the previous 20 years.

In the chancel you won’t be able to miss the five life-sized statues.

These were donated by Duke Adolf and represent Christ in the centre and the evangelists Mark, John, Matthew and Luke, from left to right.

The polygonal bronze and iron pulpit has an interesting past as it was only supposed to be placeholder for a future marble design, but after being installed on the right side of the chancel in 1862 it has remained ever since.

7. Kochbrunnen

Kochbrunnen

The best-known and hottest spring in Wiesbaden is Kochbrunnen (Cooking Fountain), which emerges on its namesake square at 66°C. There’s also a drinking water fountain on the square under a Neo-Baroque pavilion.

The spring was first recorded in the 14th century, and that water is forced up from a depth of 2,000 metres, filtered through a processing plant and then channelled here.

Kochbrunnen bursts from its fountain at 370 litres per minute and has a slight sulphuric smell.

Inspecting the fountain you’ll see that the water comes out clear, but after sitting in the basin for an hour takes on a yellowish tone.

8. Museum Wiesbaden

Museum Wiesbaden

The three-winged building for the Museum Wiesbaden took shape in the early 1910s, but its collection goes back at least a century before to the collections of writer and diplomat Johann Isaak von Gerning, a contemporary of Goethe.

The three sections are an art museum shining for its 19th and 20th-century painting, a collection of antiquities put together by the House of Nassau and a natural history wing abounding with zoological specimens and fossils.

Art aficionados will appreciate the works by Adolph Menzel, Franz von Lenbach, Max Beckmann, and Bauhaus artists like Walter Dexel and László Moholy-Nagy.

The fossil collection, running to thousands of specimens will thrill natural scientists, while there are Roman monuments, tombs and the mysterious “Mithras Stone” altar among the antiquities.

9. Wiesbaden City Palace

Wiesbaden City Palace

In order to show his affinity for Wiesenbad’s citizens and forge a link with his ancestors, William, Duke of Nassau moved his residence to Marktplatz in the centre of the city.

Work Started on the city palace in 1835, but William died before it was completed in 1841. And from then on the Neoclassical building had an eventful century, almost being stormed in the revolutions of 1848 and becoming a second home for the Prussian Kaisers after the Duchy of Nassau was annexed by Prussia in 1866. As the home of the Hessian State Parliament, the landmark is a sight to enjoy from the outside, and makes up that cultivated ensemble on Marktplatz.

10. Biebrich Palace

Biebrich Palace

One of the most beautiful properties on the banks of the Rhine, Biebrich Palace is a Baroque residence begun at the start of the 18th century.

The palace was commissioned by George August, Count of Nassau-Idstein, and after he died it became property of another branch of the family, the Nassau-Ussingen dynasty.

Today the building is used for conferences and ceremonies by the Hessian state government.

From the peaceful Schlosspark, which sweeps out behind you can take in the palace’s rotunda.

This is topped with 16 statues of ancient gods arranged in pairs in two sets of eight, depicting Minerva and Mars, Venus and Mercury, Jupiter and Juno and Apollo and Diana.

Every May Wiesbaden’s International Horse Show is held in the park and is now in its 82nd year.

11. Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden

Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden

Whether you’re in the mood for opera, ballet, musical theatre or a classical concert, the Hessian State Theatre is a venue with prestige, sumptuous architecture and a lot of history.

Giants like Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann made appearances at the theatre, and Richard Strauss was a guest conductor.

The prolific Viennese duo Fellner & Helmer won the contract to design the theatre in the 1890s, and used their Neo-Baroque template for a building that is sumptuous inside and out.

In may the Staatstheater is at the centre of the Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden.

This event was inaugurated in 1896 and is one of the most prestigious opera and theatre festivals in the world, welcoming visiting companies from around Europe and putting on smaller recitals, seminars, poetry readings and art exhibitions.

12. Tier- und Pflanzenpark Fasanerie

Tier- Und Pflanzenpark Fasanerie

Beyond Wiesbaden’s northwest boundary is the forest where Charles, Prince of Nassau-Usingen created a pheasant breeding ground for hunts in the 18th century.

The hunting lodge that was built in 1740s is still standing and now houses a restaurant.

And after the Second World War, the park reopened as an animal attraction for regional species.

Of course there are pheasants, but also fallow deer, otters, wild boar, barn owls, peacocks and lynxes.

One look at the size of the trees and you’ll know that the forest is historic.

There are also exotic specimens to look out for, like the thickest sequoia in Germany, a ginkgo, Spanish fir, red oaks as well as mature beech, oak and horse chestnuts.

13. Taunusstraße

Taunusstraße

At a diagonal angle and ending just after Kochbrunnenplatz, Taunusstraße is a princely street of 19th-century villas in the Historicist style.

And instead of the typical retail chains, the street has shops befitting its upscale character, like design emporia, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and cafes.

Taunusstraße’s forte is still antiques, and is still known as the Antiquitätenmeile, “Antiques Mile”. On the last weekend of August the street shuts down to road traffic and literally rolls out the red carpet to pedestrians.

For 300 metres the street has culinary stalls, live music and entertainment for kids.

14. Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme

Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme

Since you’re in one of the oldest spa towns in Europe you could set aside a couple of hours for some rest and relaxation at these luxurious baths.

As a tribute to Wiesbaden’s ancient founders, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme has been designed like a Roman Baths and is equipped with an indoor swimming pool, a sudatorium (vaulted sweat-room), tepidarium (warm bath), sanarium (sauna), as well as a Finnish sauna and a Russian steam bath.

And if you need to cool off or warm up quickly there’s a tropical shower pumping frosty or steaming hot water.

15. Rheingau Royal Riesling

Rheingau Royal Riesling

The south-oriented slopes of the Rheingau around Wiesbaden are just right for growing Riesling grapes.

That’s because the Rhine flows east to west past Wiesbaden rather than south to north, which bathes the right-sided slopes of the valley in sunlight.

The story goes that Charlemagne planted the first vine in Rheingau, and one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world can be found at Johannisberg.

Wine has been produced on this slope since the Cistercians arrived in the 12th century.

That history makes Schloss Johannisberg a priority if you want to take a wine tour.

Not least because it is said to be the birthplace of Spätlese (late-harvest wine). In this process fine wine is made from grapes harvested late in the season after they have developed “noble rot”.

8 Things We Miss About Living in Wiesbaden

authentic travel wiesbaden

We’ve officially been back to Michigan for five months…the same amount of time we lived in Germany. They say time flies when you’re having fun. Apparently time also flies when you’re living during a global pandemic . Not too long ago we were sipping glühwein at German Christmas markets and now we’re back home enjoying summer in Michigan.

Here are 8 things we miss about Wiesbaden:

1. The Charming Downtown Area

Wiesbaden is such a lovely city. It has a welcoming ambiance that made us feel at home almost instantly. One of our favorite parts of living abroad was taking the 20-minute walk downtown to stroll through the city, discover the local sights and sounds, and enjoy delicious food and drinks. Wiesbaden has the charm of a traditional German town with the liveliness of a larger city.

authentic travel wiesbaden

2. Traveling to New Places

Traveling has always been one of our favorite things to do. It was a surreal feeling to be able to hop on a train and travel almost anywhere in Europe. Our travels included spontaneous day trips to new cities as well as week-long adventures through multiple countries . We got to visit so many new places while living abroad…some that we had never even heard of before. Our favorite places included Ljubljana, Slovenia, Zagreb, Croatia, and Lucerne, Switzerland. We are so grateful we had the opportunity to explore so much of Europe before the border closed.

authentic travel wiesbaden

3. Christmas Markets

They weren’t kidding when they said “Christmas is the most wonderful time of year”… especially when you’re in Germany. Every city has a unique way of celebrating Christmas and each is memorable in its own way. We especially enjoyed kicking off the Christmas season at the Wiesbaden tree lighting ceremony on Erica’s birthday. We were able to bring a little piece of Christmas magic home with us by collecting glühwein mugs from each Christmas market. Not only did we get a tasteful treat, but we’ll get to reminisce on these amazing memories every time we take a sip out of these mugs.

authentic travel wiesbaden

4. Delicious and Affordable Wine and Beer

Sitting down at a restaurant in the States and ordering a $14 glass of wine can get expensive. Luckily wine and beer flow like water in Germany…and both are less expensive than sparkling water. Having the opportunity to try German Rieslings in the Rheingau region is something we wish everyone could experience. Ordering beer was always easy for Ryan because all he had to memorize was “Ein großes Bier, bitte” ( translation: one large beer please ). While it may be true that you should never go grocery shopping hungry, we think you should always go with a glass of wine in hand…having the option to enjoy a nice glass of wine while picking out fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

authentic travel wiesbaden

5. Our Favorite Restaurants and Cafes

Contrary to popular belief that it’s all sausages and schnitzel in Germany, the food options are endless in Wiesbaden and cover a range of cuisines. We got spoiled by having so many great restaurants and cafés within walking distance of our flat. It didn’t take long for us to find our favorite dining hot spots: Weihenstephaner for authentic German food, Erawan for Thai, KAVOS for Greek, and Café Latte Art for coffee and dessert. Whether you’re in a train station waiting for your connection or heading downtown for a light breakfast, the bakeries are always a great place to stop. With fresh pastries and delectable sandwiches, the glass displays are hard to pass up. One of our first meals in Wiesbaden was an all-you-can-eat brunch. I thought this was more of an American thing, but the German version did not disappoint. We can’t wait to eat and drink our way through Wiesbaden again sometime soon.

authentic travel wiesbaden

6. Walking Everywhere

Many of our plans in Wiesbaden depended on how long the walk would be. Grocery store (5 min)…. no problem, downtown (20 min)… don’t even break a sweat, favorite restaurant (30 min)…we’ll order dessert, train station (40 min)… maybe we’ll stay in Wiesbaden this weekend ;). Wiesbaden has accelerated our walking obsession and has even enticed Ryan to start doing 6am laps around the neighborhood every morning. People now seem confused when he walks past them with his earphones on and shouts GUTEN MORGEN!! Being able to walk everywhere made traveling such a great experience and kept us in shape after eating all those pastries from the bakery and beers from the beer hall.

authentic travel wiesbaden

7. Our Lovely Flat

We absolutely loved our flat . It was located in a quiet area and had all the comforts of home…although it did take some time to get used to the appliances and we didn’t realize we had a freezer until our last month in Wiesbaden. I spent a lot of time at the flat, especially while Ryan was at work so it was important to have a cozy place to call home. Ryan and I loved watching the sun rise and set from our balcony. We also loved cooking up new recipes in the kitchen and watching our favorite Netflix shows in the living room.

authentic travel wiesbaden

8. Hanging with Friends…New and Old

We met so many nice people while living in Wiesbaden….from Ryan’s coworkers and their friends to other expats we met at coffee shops. Moving to a foreign country without knowing many people was a little scary at first, but everyone gave us a warm welcome to Wiesbaden and made sure to include us in their events, holiday parties, and dinner reservations. Being the social people that we are, Ryan and I loved having a group of people to hang out with in Wiesbaden. Due to our quick exit from the country , we were not able to say a proper goodbye to our new friends, but we look forward to seeing everyone again someday soon.

authentic travel wiesbaden

Wiesbaden, Germany will always hold a special place in our hearts. We will definitely be back again one day…hopefully sooner rather than later! Let’s see what the next five months have in store for us.

3 Great Day Trips from Wiesbaden in Summer

Following is information about 3 great day trips from Wiesbaden in summer: the Tree Face Forest , the Rock Ocean Forest , and Burg Rheinstein , a castle dating from the 1300’s. (In winter, it’s all about the Christmas Markets!)

Forest Walks - Tree Face Forest, Wiesbaden, TravelsWithSuz.com

Wiesbaden is fast becoming one of my favorite places in the world; it’s a cosmopolitan town, easy to get around, with world-class hotels, a wonderful variety of excellent restaurants, and high-end shopping. This article has to do with day trips from town. Fun fact: there are wild green parrots that reside permanently in Wiesbaden!

The Tree Face Forest

The Tree Face Forest, in German known as Steckeschlääfer-Klamm, is in the Hasselbach Gorge of the Binger Forest, about 50 km from Wiesbaden. There’s a little stream in the gorge; the walk is possible because in 1971, bridges were built over the steep ravines. Since then, 3 artists have carved 65 faces of gnomes or spirits into the trees and stumps along the path. I visited with my grandchildren, who are 5 and 2 years old; it was so much fun for all of us to discover the faces along the way!

As you can see, some of the faces are not easy to spot! The Tree Face Forest is a kid’s dream. After exploring the gorge, we found an area to splash in the stream to cool off. Playing in the water, making little dams, and balancing on the rocks was the perfect way to wrap up this lovely experience.

More information about the Tree Face Forest

The Rock Ocean Forest

The Rock Ocean Forest, known in German as Felsenmeer, the Sea of Stones, is a ravine with large rounded boulders that are fun for all ages and experience to explore. Felsenmeer is in Lautertal, in the Odenwald, 70 km from Wiesbaden. Continental-plate shift exposed this sea of rocks that was formed around 340 million years ago (although legend has it that it was formed when 2 giants started throwing rocks at each other). 😉

Forest Walks - Rock Ocean Forest - TravelsWithSuz.com

When we were there, there was a class for beginning rock climbers who were learning to work the crevices, but the little kids loved it too! There are refreshments available, and other paths in the forest to explore. My grandson was very taken with the bright orange slug shown above. I was fascinated by the forest itself – so lush and green compared to where I live, in New Mexico.

Burg Rheinstein

“Burg” means “castle” in Deutsch. This castle was constructed in 1316. Rheinstein Castle was important for its strategic location overlooking the Rhine River. During the 19th century, Prince Frederick of Prussia bought the castle and it was rebuilt.

Today, the castle is open to be toured inside and out, there is a lovely restaurant, and it is a beautiful space for an event – many weddings are held there.

Burg Rheinstein-TravelsWithSuz.com

In the Middle Ages, the Fire Baskets were lit and used as signals from castle to castle along the Rhine, or “as a punitive crown” for contrarians 😫; in the 19th century, a beacon was lit in the basket for castle festivals.

Getting There

authentic travel wiesbaden

Burg Rheinstein is very close to the Tree Face Forest; we had lunch at the castle after finding the tree faces.

The forest walks have no admission; the castle charges 7 euros per person to visit.

Since my eldest daughter and her family live in Wiesbaden, I visit frequently from the US. I admire how there are so many fun activities there are for families to get out and explore nature. We visited many awesome playgrounds and splash parks with the kids; the Mainz Volkspark is an example of a park with something for everyone. Our cherry picking jaunt was a blast, too – and the cherries? Amazing.

If you’re thinking of visiting Wiesbaden, you may be interested in where to stay and nice places to eat – I have some recommendations for that.

This makes me want to visit Wiesbaden! Wow Burg Rheinstein looks amazing.

Wow, that is a beautiful castle, if I ever get the pleasure of going to Germany, I’ll have to add it to my list.

I love all of these day trips, however that castle would be my first excursion!

What fantastic places to explore. I love how old everything is.

Oh my! I will definitely be saving this post for our next travels to Germany (which will hopefully be soon!). My littles would love hiking in the forest to find the gnome faces… so would I actually! And I had to laugh about the giant slug! My kids were shocked the first time they found one in the forest near the Fernsehturm!

What a beautiful trip! You are so lucky to be able to travel over there andspwnd time with your daughter and her family.. it’s gorgeous!

Ok I will be honest, I am not sure if the face forest is scary or cool? haha

That Tree Face Forest looks like so much fun! I would love to see them!

I love the tree faces! All the trips look like fun!

Is Wiesbaden Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Wiesbaden, Germany

Germany : Safety by City

Nestled in the heart of Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate region, Wiesbaden is a picturesque city renowned for its spa culture, stunning architecture, and rich history.

As the capital of the state of Hesse, Wiesbaden sits on the northern bank of the Rhine River and is just a stone’s throw away from Frankfurt.

Boasting charming streets lined with elegant buildings, lush parks, and thermal baths, Wiesbaden offers a blend of relaxation and cultural exploration.

Its name, which translates to “meadow baths,” reflects its centuries-old tradition as a spa town.

One way to enjoy this city is with a Rhine Valley River cruise.

You can enjoy all of the benefits of the area while taking in the amazing vistas along the way.

With its vibrant atmosphere and cultural allure, Wiesbaden beckons travelers to immerse themselves in its beauty and history.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Wiesbaden

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Petty crimes tend to be low in the city. However, like many large cities, there is the risk of pickpocketing or minor theft. The key is to carefully watch your personal items, do not wear expensive jewelry and keep your wallet on the inside of your jacket or front pocket. Otherwise, you shouldn’t have any problems with crime in the city. If you do have valuables with you, store them in your hotel’s safe. Also, be wary of people selling things on the street. They may not be authentic, and you may be cheated. While you will be safe walking at night, walk in well-lighted areas where there are other people. If you feel unsafe in an area or a restaurant or other establishment, leave and find somewhere else.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Very safe You’ll feel safe taking any form of the city’s public transportation. This includes buses, taxis and trains. All forms of transportation are used by everyone in the city every day. This includes locals and tourists. Public transportation is well-maintained and punctual. Taxi drivers follow local safety road regulations and are polite. Train stations are clean with clear signage. This means that even if you are not familiar with the area, you can get to where you are going. The stations are designed to move large numbers of people even those who are not familiar with the city. Most people who use public transportation really enjoy it.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

In Wiesbaden and the surrounding areas, levels of crime and personal security in it recently. Germany is ranked 43 place out of 140 countries in our ranking, which measures the crime levels reported in the area, and the resident's feelings about the safety level in their area. The crime rate in the Wiesbaden area is 36.17 out of 100 (The lower the better), which measures the prevalence of crime, pickpocketing, assault, sexual assault, violence, and more in recent years, in the city and the wider area. The safety rate in the Wiesbaden area is 65.43 out of 100 (The higher the better), which measures the levels of security, and the sense of personal safety felt by the residents, tourists, and guides visiting the city. That means that While crime rates in the area are below average, you should still take precautions, since there may be more problematic areas that you should avoid walking around at night.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Given its geographic location, the risk of natural disasters is very low. Pay attention to any public warnings though and heed their instructions if you hear them.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The risk here is medium to low. The risk can be lowered by not wearing flashy or expensive jewelry, or carrying items of high value. The key is to blend in and not to stand out. One of the tricks that muggers use is to bump a person to get their wallet or handbag. This is why you should carry your wallet inside the pocket of your jacket or the front bock of your pants. For women, carry your purse inside your jacket against your body. If you are in a restaurant, the best place for your purse is your lap. If that is not feasible, wrap the strap around your foot and the dining chair. That way you will know if someone is trying to take it.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

The risk of terrorism events is very low. Take normal precautions and heed any public media alerts. If there is something that doesn’t seem right, contact local authorities immediately.

SCAMS RISK: MEDIUM

As with any large city, there is a risk of scams, particularly on the streets. Be wary of street vendors who have a “great deal”. There is a chance that the product will not be authenticated and you will be scammed out of your money. Also, be watchful in restaurants and bars to ensure that the prices are correct. If you feel uncomfortable in any establishment or it doesn’t appear to be cleaned regularly or hygienically, find another place.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Wiesbaden overall is a safe city for solo female travelers. Instances of street harassment are quite rare in this European city. Local citizens are generally respectful and maintain good public behavior. However, common safety precautions should still be observed at all times, especially during nighttime.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

Tap water in Wiesbaden is of a very high standard. It undergoes stringent quality checks and is safe to drink. Many locals prefer it to bottled water due to its freshness and taste. The water's quality is maintained by public water utilities that strictly follow German and European Union guidelines. You’ll find that it’s important to stay hydrated while you are moving around so both tap and bottled waters are good choices.

  • Safest Places to Visit in Wiesbaden

Kurpark: A tranquil oasis featuring lush gardens and soothing thermal springs.

Schlossplatz: The historic square is surrounded by majestic buildings and vibrant cafes.

Neroberg Mountain: Offering panoramic views of the city and recreational activities.

  • Places to Avoid in Wiesbaden

While Wiesbaden is generally safe, travelers should exercise caution in the Bahnhofsviertel area, especially at night, due to reports of petty crimes.

Safety is hardly a concern when it comes to living in  Germany .

Nothing wrong with WI-Südost.

It is a district of mixed use – from residential streets to large office buildings, major courthouses, supermarkets and the city’s biggest sports facilities.

Avoid living right on of the main thoroughfares, traffic is heavy in Wiesbaden, so noise can be an issue.

I would echo the post below except that Sauerland is OK.

I think he means Schelmengraben, which has a lot of high rises and its fair share of social problems.

The inner Westend is a bit of a Turkish ghetto and I would avoid this area too.

Not dangerous but quite dirty and rundown.

I wouldn’t want to walk around there at night if I were a lone female.

There are no “dangerous” areas of Wiesbaden.

It is generally a very affluent city of around 270,000 inhabitants but it feels like a village in many ways.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to Wiesbaden
  • Stay vigilant in crowded areas and keep your belongings secure. Don’t wear provocative clothing or expensive jewelry. Use your hotel safe to secure travel papers and items that are valuable.
  • Use reputable taxis or public transportation for travel within the city. While German is the language of the country, many people speak English as well. If you don’t feel comfortable, have your hotel write down where you would like to go on a business card so that you can travel more freely.
  • Avoid displaying valuable items in public to deter potential thieves.
  • Research safe routes and neighborhoods before exploring the city.
  • Be cautious of strangers offering unsolicited assistance or directions.
  • Keep important documents and valuables in a secure location.
  • Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and services.
  • Respect local customs and laws to avoid any misunderstandings. Perhaps the most important point here is that you should avoid asking or talking about the past. This can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in tourist hotspots.
  • Trust your instincts and seek help if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • So... How Safe Is Wiesbaden Really?

Overall, Wiesbaden offers a relatively safe environment for travelers, with low to medium risks across various categories.

While incidents of petty crime and scams may occur, exercising caution and staying informed can help mitigate potential risks.

By following common-sense safety measures and staying aware of your surroundings, visitors can enjoy all that Wiesbaden has to offer without major concerns.
