Depeche Mode have played the final show of their extensive ‘Memento Mori’ tour earlier this week. See footage and the setlist below.

The tour consisted of 112 shows in support of the band’s 15th studio album ‘ Memento Mori ’ and saw them perform to well over 2million fans. This marked their first record and tour since losing longtime bandmate and close friend Andy Fletcher .

Yesterday (April 8), the synth-pop legends wrapped up their massive tour at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The show saw them draw on a similar setlist throughout FROM the run, but naturally ended with an emotional climax and farewell from the band.

In  a glowing four-star review of Depeche Mode’s huge show at London’s Twickenham Stadium last summer, NME described the gig as as showing the band “at the top of their game and bonded in fraternity”.

“ Coldplay  might insert LEDs into your gums while  Muse  recreate War Of The Worlds with some balls-out bombast, but there’s an effortless cool to Depeche Mode’s stadium approach,” it read. “The Anton Corbijn stage design is sparse and simple, with just the giant M lettering of the new record and some tastefully simple visuals, leaving everything else down to the songs and personality with no pyro or pratting about.

“They may be demigods to their leather-clad cult, but tonight Depeche Mode have never seemed so human.”

Speaking to NME last year , Depeche Mode members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore opened up about what’s next for them following the end of tour.

“The most important thing is to be putting out good music and that people like it,” said Gore. “Once we finish this tour we’ll take a break, then we’ll see if and when we feel like doing it again. Up until now we always have. You never know, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. We just take each project as it comes.”

Gahan opened up about his compulsion to rejoin the group dispite being so vocal about his frequent reluctance, saying: “That is a good word. It was like that; I was compelled. Just when I thought I was out, they dragged me back in!”

He added: “Losing Fletch made that feeling more real. Everything will come to an end. I don’t know when that is. After Fletch passed and we had to continue I said, ‘Try to enjoy what you’ve got to do here and do the best you can’. You really don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again.”

In other news, the band marked the end of their ‘Memento Mori’ tour by sharing a new music video and huge remix package for ‘People Are Good’.

Iconic electronica band Depeche Mode have completed their Memento Mori world tour. The show, which you can watch in full below, was an emotionally charged final sendoff at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on 8 April.

The tour, spanning 112 shows and captivating over two million fans, commemorated the band’s 15th studio album of the same name and marked their first since the loss of longtime bandmate, Andy Fletcher, in 2022 .

The setlist for the memorable Cologne performance featured a blend of classics and newer tracks. From the energy of the 1990-launched Enjoy the Silence to the poignant rendition of World in My Eyes , dedicated to Fletcher, each song carried a weight of significance, considering the band has now been going for a whopping 44 years.

In a recent interview with NME , Depeche Mode members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore shared their thoughts on the future following the conclusion of the tour.

Gore emphasized the importance of creating music that resonates with fans, stating, “The most important thing is to be putting out good music and that people like it.” He outlined their post-tour plans, mentioning a break before considering future projects. “Once we finish this tour we’ll take a break, then we’ll see if and when we feel like doing it again,” Gore explained, highlighting the band’s flexible approach to their creative journey.

Gahan reflected on his own journey, acknowledging his initial reluctance and eventual compulsion to rejoin the group. “That is a good word. It was like that; I was compelled. Just when I thought I was out, they dragged me back in!” he confessed, alluding to the magnetic pull of the band’s camaraderie.

The passing of bandmate Fletcher added a poignant layer to their reflections. “Losing Fletch made that feeling more real. Everything will come to an end. I don’t know when that is.”

Depeche Mode: Memento Mori review – a life-affirming farewell for Fletch

(Columbia) Andy Fletcher’s two surviving bandmates reflect on mortality on an album of warm, weird electro-pop

A ndy Fletcher’s death could’ve ended Depeche Mode. In Fletch’s 42-year tenure, curtailed last May, the Basildon band never made a truly bad album, rarely stooped to covers or re-records. The music gently declined in quality over the decades, but their tours grew bigger and better. Their final album would’ve been 2017’s Spirit , a decent tilt at reinventing the grand claustrophobia of 1987 masterpiece Music for the Masses . A solid legacy. Instead, surviving bandmates Martin Gore and Dave Gahan have assembled Memento Mori , an elegant farewell for Fletch.

Gore’s say-what-you-see lyrics are always best on the essentials of life – sex and death – and Ghosts Again is the pair’s best single in aeons, a singalong meditation on mortality that’s concise and powerful. Both are in fine voice. Gore’s choirboy trills have never been richer than on Soul With Me, while Gahan ranges ever-restlessly from operatic to reptilian, the electro-pop Freddie Mercury. There’s warmth in the album’s fusion of industrial grind with delicate melody, and producer James Ford sparks a revivifying weirdness in songs such as My Cosmos Is Mine. For a record preoccupied by death, its big heart bursts with life.

During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode ‘s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori .

“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori . “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore says he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend. “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already,'” he says.

Before they could get in the studio, though, the title took on far greater meaning for Gahan and Gore. On May 26, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who co-founded Depeche Mode and played synthesizers and bass in the group since 1980, died naturally of an aortic dissection. Did they second-guess the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it cemented it, if anything,” Gore says.

“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.'”

Even now, the two musicians are still making sense of their bandmate’s absence. “You don’t always get to say goodbye,” Gahan says. “With this, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting in a pew in a church together, and Fletch is not here anymore, just like that.”

“It’s obviously really hard to lose your closest friend,” Gore says. “Andy was there with me from way before the band and I feel like he was the one in the trenches with me the whole way. So it’s very tough.”

But Gore feels his bandmate would have wanted Depeche Mode to continue. “He was always seen as the glue of the band,” he says. “It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would’ve caused the end of the band.”

Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other face to face to work on the album until July. The singer feels that if Fletch were working on the album, he’d have joked, “Can we just stop talking about death?” “I missed that in the studio,” the singer says, “and I know Martin did, too. We felt like he was still there with us.”

The group opened the Berlin event with a short montage, showing close-ups of music gear as echoey, undeniably Depeche Mode music plays in the background. The soundtrack had a throbbing, fuzzy synth bass line and operatic vocals. Eventually, the camera pulled out to show the musicians together in the studio. Eventually, Gahan’s voice enters and he sings, “We know we’ll be ghosts again.”

Neither Gahan nor Gore feel ready to name any of Memento Mori’s song titles — days before the Berlin event, they’re not even quite sure what the final titles are for the musical selections they’re playing — but they say the structure of the album as a whole came together naturally. “To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it,” Gahan says. “It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we’re like, ‘This is my world,’ and ending with, ‘How do I make the most of it?'” The music, Gahan says, sounds melancholy but it’s also braided with hope and joy. The record will likely feature 12 songs with a few saved over as extras for a deluxe edition.

When asked in Berlin if the band will be paying tribute to Fletch on the tour, Gahan said the group was still figuring it out but had zeroed in on some of Fletch’s favorite Depeche Mode songs. “He’ll be there in spirit, I’m sure, judging us,” he said with a laugh.

In another light moment, a journalist asked if the band would ever consider doing an “unplugged” tour. “We can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band,” Gahan said, chuckling. Gore added, “We can try it with battery packs or something.”

In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will start its Memento Mori tour in North America instead of Europe. “I can’t remember the last time we started in America, if we ever have,” Gore says. “I’m sure we did at some point, but it just seemed like something different to do.” (The European leg will begin May 16. Some of the venues the group next year will play include Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Twickenham Stadium and the Stade de France.) The band will return to North America in Sept. 2023 for another round of 29 arena shows.

Until then, they will press forward while continuing to grieve their friend and bandmate’s death. “It was very odd coming to Berlin and coming into a hotel where we have been with Andy many times, and just seeing the bar where we’d often seen sitting,” Gore says. “That was a bit of a reality check. Everything that we’re doing from this point forward is different, so we just have to put our heads down and do the best we can.”

Mixing Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori World Tour

Depeche Mode continues to bring its music to the masses on the year-long Memento Mori tour, with help from Britannia Row.

New York, NY (January 16, 2024)— Depeche Mode knows a little something about music for the masses. Deep in the middle of a year-long world tour that kicks off Leg 4 in London on January 22, the group continues to bring its unique blend of synth pop, goth, alternative, rock and more to sold-out stadiums and arenas. The band—now a duo of vocalist Dave Gahan and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Martin Gore—has been on the road in support of 2022’s Memento Mori , and supporting Depeche Mode’s modus operandi at every stop has been UK-based audio provider Britannia Row Productions , which has now worked with the band for 30 years.

Along for the ride are FOH engineer Jamie Pollock and monitor engineer Mike Gibbard, each ensuring that their mixes reflect what’s happening onstage with clarity and purpose. Depeche Mode has never held the recorded versions of its songs as sacrosanct, as evidenced by the bumper crop of remixes the group has released over the years. Bringing that philosophy to the FOH position, Pollock had to develop each song’s mix not necessarily to reproduce the recorded version or simply give it a more “live feel,” but instead to best support the song’s latest evolution.

“I could play you one of their songs that everyone knows, mute the lead parts to listen to what’s underneath it—and you’d say, ‘It’s not the same song,’” he said, laughing. “The music is so creative, and there’s so many layers to it; it’s quite brilliant. I spent some time with Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute Records, who discovered them, and we had conversations about how some songs came about in the studio. You think you know what drives a song and you interpret it that way, but there’s definitely been times where I was wrong. He was able to tell me about a song’s creative process, and once you understand the fundamentals of what it was about, you can then play on it [in the mix]. I think they look for things that make it exciting, a little different. We recently started playing ‘Black Celebration,’ and how we’re doing it now is very different—and they wanted that. I think they were looking for something a bit new and fresh, and that’s the evolution.”

The front-of-house mix position has a similar vibe—there’s plenty of familiar gear on-hand, much of it analog, but the way it’s all brought together is a new approach. Pollock mixes nightly on an Avid S6L-32D console, with a backup desk sitting nearby in case of emergency.

Given the size of the tour, playing stadiums and arenas, he wanted to have “an insurance policy” as he put it, where he could switch consoles instantly if needed. As a result, the two desks gain-share a pair of Stage 64 racks on stage for analog inputs; additionally, various RME MADI routers on stage distribute digital MADI sources to both E6L-192 engines.

“I’m sending a lot of MIDI commands back and forth between the two consoles, so every time I fire a snapshot, it also fires on the second desk,” said Pollock. “Both consoles go into a DirectOut Prodigy MC, and that is actually driving everything. All my analog outboard gear and Schoeps audience mics go into the Prodigy, so there’s a lot of routing back and forth, and I’ve set it up so that if I hit a button on my Elgato Stream Deck, it’ll switch the MADI patch, moving everything to the backup console.”

When it comes to that outboard gear, there’s plenty to get moved over. For the all-important vocals, there’s a pair of Rupert Neve Designs 5045 primary source enhancers and Shelford Channels, used to squeeze out a little more gain before feedback when the group heads out onto the stage thrust. A shorter plate reverb from a Bricasti M7 gets applied to Gahan’s vocal for some depth, and a tc electronic System 6000 reverb gets blended in with it for character as needed. While an Overstayer Modular Channel was originally going to be part of the vocal setup, it ultimately landed on the guitar, next to a GML 8900 dynamic range controller. “I try to put a range of colors on my palette that I know I can use if needed, and that’s an example,” said Pollock. “The Overstayer is a good piece; it always shapes things well, has a lot of parallel paths, and has plenty of flexibility. It’s really clever stuff.”

The variety of drums get numerous outboard units dedicated to them, too. “I have an API 2500 on the drums, which is a classic,” he shared. “Christian Eigner, the drummer, plays electronic drums for a couple songs, so I use a UBK Fatso on that, just for a little tape saturation.” Meanwhile, a Chandler TG1 Limiter gets used sparingly with the rear pair of drum overhead mics. Set up lower than the front pair and at an angle, the rear overheads are used for more of a room mic sound on their own or in conjunction with the front pair; the result “is being completely annihilated by the TG1—it’s a character thing that isn’t used all the time, but has a really interesting sound.”

An Eventide Harmonizer H3000 is also onhand, as is an Eclipse. Meanwhile, for a master bus chain, Pollock has a Tube-Tech SMC2B multiband compression going into a Chandler Curve Bender Mastering EQ, followed by a Rupert Neve Designs Master Bus Converter, using its Silk transformers for a little saturation.

The resulting mix is heard via an L-Acoustics K Series P.A., looked after by system engineer Terence Hulkes. While the hangs vary daily depending on the venue, typically there are 16 K1s with four K2s on the main hangs, bolstered by a dozen flown KS28 subwoofers in the air (not cardioid). Side hangs consist of 12 K1 boxes with eight K2 down on each side, while rear hangs are each handled with 16 K2s. KS28 subwoofers are placed on the ground in a three-high spaced sub arc, Kara IIs handle frontfills, and A15s are used for outfills. All that is driven by L-Acoustics LA12X amps throughout.

The complex monitor system includes two d&b audiotechnik SL-GSub subwoofers flown per side in stadiums, trimming back to three KSL18s per side when in arenas. They supplement the sizable mosaic of d&b audiotechnik boxes and Shure PSM1000 IEM systems in play onstage. Stereo mixes are heard across the deck via a phalanx of 16 d&b M2s, while the drums get the added vibe of two B6 subs.

At stageside, monitor engineer Mike Gibbard oversees mixes on a Solid State Logic L550 Plus console. “I use it because of how it sounds—what comes out of the bus of that desk is ridiculous,” he said with a laugh. “The preamps are so good, the summing…. Using it almost feels like cheating; I’m good at what I do, but with that desk, I can elevate it to another level.”

While he makes use of onboard effects in the SSL, he often turns to a pair of UAD 2 Live Racks, each running at 96k and tied to a pair of DiGiGrid MGBs, for multi-tracking 128 channels; everything is clocked to an Antelope Audio OCX HD Master Clock. “I’m running 32 channels of UAD,” said Gibbard. “That’s 1176 compressors; SPL Transient Designers, mainly for the drums; a Manley VoxBox on Dave; a Manley on the guitar channels, using the tape oxide saturation quite a lot; and for reverbs, there’s Lexicon 224s and EMT 250s.”

Depeche Mode Shares That Global Spirit On Tour

Despite all that, there’s still room for outboard gear, too, with a trio of RND 5045 primary source enhancers, used to double-up vocal channels for in-ears and the d&b boxes. Alongside them sits a Radial three-slot 500 Series frame, housing a Shadow Hills Mono GAMA Mic-Pre, RND 542 Tape Emulator and an API 550A three-band EQ, all for a vocal chain. Those vocals are captured through a standard-issue Shure SM58 for Gahan and variously a 58 and a KSM9 for Gore. Much of the stage instrumentation is DI’d, and the drums are surrounded mostly by options from Austrian Audio (OC818, OC18 and OC7s), along with the occasional Audix D6, Shure Beta 91 and Audio-Technica AT4051b.

Finding the right ways to present the band’s music to the crowds and the band itself has been an unusually gratifying experience for the two engineers, both of whom are electronic music artists in their own right and were initially influenced by the band. “It’s one of the best tours I’ve ever done in my life; it’s a box-tick band for me, and they are absolutely lovely people to work for,” said Gibbard. “For me to come into this and really deliver how they want to hear Depeche Mode on stage, I’m really enjoying it, and they’re all having a lot of fun.”

Following the rapturous reception to their new single “Ghosts Again,”  Depeche Mode  have added a new Fall leg of North American tour dates to the Memento Mori Tour, which will support Memento Mori, their forthcoming studio album due out March 24. With the addition of these 29 new shows, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees will now set out on a colossal 75-date tour — their 19th tour and their first in over five years.

The Live Nation-presented tour begins March 23 with a limited North American run featuring stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, and Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. The band will then embark on their European stadium tour on May 16, with noted stops including the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium. 

Following the end of the European summer run, the newly added tour dates bring the band back to North America in the Fall, with the tour stopping in Mexico City at Foro Sol before returning to the US and Canada. Newly announced tour stops include Austin’s Moody Center, Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, additional New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena and more, and concluding with a multi-night run in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum and Crypto.com Arena.

Pre-sales will kick off with a Fan Pre-sale on Tuesday, February 21, with the general on sale beginning Friday, February 24 at 10am local time. On the Memento Mori Tour, the band will once again be partnering with luxury watchmaker Hublot to support charity endeavors tied to the tour.

Reception to the Memento Mori tour has been overwhelming with shows quickly selling out across Europe and North America, and over 1.5 million tickets already sold for the initial 46 shows. The tour is on track to be one of Depeche Mode’s largest to date and is also well on its way to being one of the largest worldwide tours of 2023. Forty-two years after the release of their debut album, the members of Depeche Mode — well, the surviving ones — are in on the joke of their somehow having become old guys.

As Dave Gahan, 60, and Martin Gore , 61, played their synth-rock classic “Enjoy the Silence” on Tuesday night at the Kia Forum, images of a bejeweled skull rotated on a wall of video screens behind them; later, Gahan noticed the thousands of glowing smartphones in the crowd and said, “Everybody used to have cigarette lighters, but I guess that’s not a thing anymore.”

That Depeche Mode would still be on the road in 2023 — Tuesday’s concert came just days into a lengthy world tour behind the band’s new studio LP, “Memento Mori” — is no great surprise. Rock nostalgia is a huge business, and right now business is good for Depeche Mode, which three years ago was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and which recently had its late-’80s “Never Let Me Down Again” prominently featured in HBO’s hit “ The Last of Us .” What’s more, echoes of the band’s signature style — sleek but hard-hitting, anxious yet darkly ecstatic — are detectable in music by younger acts like the Weeknd and Halsey, the latter of whom was in the audience at the Forum alongside the many OG types who looked like they’d been at Depeche Mode’s legendary Rose Bowl gig in 1988 .

Yet none of that assured that the group would feel as vital as it did Tuesday in a gutsy two-hour performance that didn’t defy age so much as question what age has to mean. “Memento Mori” follows the unexpected death last year of Depeche Mode’s founding keyboardist, Andy Fletcher, and though the material was written before he died (of an aortic dissection), songs like “Ghosts Again” and “Before We Drown” ponder mortality with the same blend of vulnerability and determination that the group once applied to its thoughts on religion, alienation and sexual obsession. The result, paradoxically, is Depeche Mode’s most alive-sounding album in years.

Dressed in a suit jacket he slipped off after two songs to reveal a vest with no shirt beneath it, Gahan had a Michael Imperioli-in-“The White Lotus” vibe as he crooned through the moody philosophy of the new LP’s “My Cosmos Is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue.” Gore, who wore an ash-colored jacket printed with more skulls, switched between guitar and keyboards and took over lead vocals for “Soul With Me,” a very pretty ballad from “Memento Mori” about “heading for the ever after.”

Against the throbbing bass and blipping synths of “Ghosts Again,” one of several tracks on the album Gore co-wrote with Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, Gahan twirled across the stage like a goth(-ier) Stevie Nicks — a heartening sign that he and Gore are finding some solace in performing these songs suffused with grief.

As strong as “Memento Mori” is, nobody came to the Forum just to hear new stuff. Rounded out by Christian Eigner on drums and Peter Gordeno on keyboards, Depeche Mode luxuriated in the sensual gloom of oldies including “Walking in My Shoes,” “Precious” and “World in My Eyes,” during which a vintage photo of a young Fletcher appeared on the video screen. “I Feel You” was grinding and lascivious, “John the Revelator” funky and clanging; “A Pain That I’m Used to” rode a morbid disco groove that wouldn’t quit.

Gahan and Gore began their encore with a bluesy acoustic rendition of “Condemnation” before revving up the chipper synth-pop of the band’s first big hit, “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Then they closed with “Never Let Me Down Again” and the happily inevitable “Personal Jesus,” both pumping with fresh blood you hope for their sake is still in supply by the time this tour circles back to Southern California in December for another six (!) arena dates.

“L.A., let’s see those hands,” Gahan told the crowd as the show reached its emotional climax. He took a moment to admire the sea of waving arms, then added, “It never gets old.”

Depeche Mode 140,000 devotees in the Olympiastadion Berlin

Depeche Mode are practically permanent guests in Berlin by now. After an unexpected death of keyboardist and founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2022, the two remaining band members Dave Gahan and Martin L. Gore announced their 15th studio album “Memento Mori” and the accompanying “World Tour” at a press conference in the capital of Germany. After 2009, 2013 and 2017, Depeche Mode found their way back to the Olympiastadion Berlin on July 7th and July 9th, 2023.

Two hot summer evenings awaited the approximately 70,000 visitors in the Olympiastadion. However, no sign of summer sluggishness: everyone celebrated and danced and sang loudly with their idols to old and new hits, which ranged from their debut album “Speak and Spell” (released in 1981) to the aforementioned “Memento Mori” (released in March 2023).

Over 40 years of music history that Gahan and Gore brought to the stage along with their long-time touring members Peter Gordeno (keyboards) and Christian Eigner (drums) and thus excited generations of their fans. Only a handful of artists know how to put a spell on a crowd, and Dave Gahan is one of them. Few words, pure presence and personality. Facial expressions, gestures, dances. Sometimes energetic, sometimes lascivious with circling hips. From the outside, it might seem like Martin Gore is stepping into the background, dedicating himself to his instruments in addition to the backing vocals, but comes out all the more intensively when he performs “Strangelove” in an acoustic version, all alone with his guitar, as he did on the second night. Goosebumps.

Depeche Mode performed for a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes or 23 songs each evening, ending both shows with their evergreen “Personal Jesus”. Just today, the band announced that their Memento Mori World Tour will continue in 2024, performing once again in Berlin.

Depeche Mode have added a new fall leg of North American tour dates to the band's Memento Mori World Tour , which will support Memento Mori , their highly anticipated upcoming studio album due out March 24th. With the addition of the 29 new shows, the revered electronic-rock group — now the duo of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore, following the death of keyboardist Andy "Fletch" Fletcher — have a colossal 75-date trek ahead of them, their first tour in over five years.

Depeche Mode Returns With ‘Memento Mori’ Album, World Tour

The legendary band, now a duo, says some of their new songs "can't help but reflect" the absence of longtime member Andy Fletcher.

BERLIN — Depeche Mode will return next year with a new album, Memento Mori , and a tour that’ll launch with 10 North America arena dates, followed by more than two dozen summer stadium shows in Europe. At a press conference at the Berliner Ensemble on Tuesday (Oct. 4), band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore said that they started working on songs during the pandemic, and that they decided to continue as an act after keyboard player and co-founder Andy Fletcher died in May .

The album isn’t completely done – recording is finished but the songs aren’t yet mixed – and Gahan and Gore said their next stop is New York, to wrap it up. It is due out around the time the tour begins.

At least one of the themes seems to be death – or at least the finiteness of life – as reflected by the title. “‘Memento Mori’ means ‘remember, you must die,'” Gahan said. So, Gore followed, “live each day to the max.”

In the studio, the two missed Fletcher. “We would miss Fletch,” Gahan says, “and some of these songs can’t help but reflect that.” 

One of the first questions from the enthusiastic audience of journalists, associates and at least a few super-fans concerned existential issues. Then another journalist asked if the band might do some unplugged shows. After some nervous giggles in the audience, Gahan pointed out that “we can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band.”

Everyone laughed.

“We could,” Gore added, “try battery packs.”

Depeche Mode announce European stadium tour, North American arena shows and new album Memento Mori

Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan says that his late bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher would have loved the band's forthcoming 15th studio album Memento Mori

Depeche Mode have announced a huge European stadium tour, plus a set of North American arena shows, to promote their forthcoming 15th studio album, Memento Mori .

The dates and album title were announced at a press conference event in Berlin, Germany today (October 4).

Discussing the group's new album, their first since the passing of founding member, Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher in May, Martin Gore says, “We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.” Vocalist Dave Gahan added, “Fletch would have loved this album. We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.”

The band will kick off their world tour in support of Memento Mori in Sacramento, California on March 23 next year. Their first show in Europe will take place in Amsterdam on May 16, after which the duo will play a mixture of festivals, arena dates, and stadium shows, including their sole UK show, at London's Twickenham Stadium on June 17.

Event Details

Following the rapturous reception to their new single “Ghosts Again," Depeche Mode have added a new Fall leg of North American tour dates to the Memento Mori Tour, which will support Memento Mori, their forthcoming studio album due out March 24. With the addition of these 29 new shows, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees will now set out on a colossal 75-date tour — their 19th tour and their first in over five years.
