INTERNATIONAL TOUR DEPOSIT/ADMINISTRATIVE PAYMENT POLICY: For international tours, the price includes a non-refundable, for any reason, deposit/administrative fee, which is listed on your tour brochure. In order to participate in a tour offering, an official tour application must be submitted along with the deposit. The deposit/administrative fee is considered your initial payment. A subsequent payment will be due within 2-4 weeks of receipt by EA Tours. DOMESTIC TOUR DEPOSIT/ADMINISTRATIVE PAYMENT POLICY: For tours operated by EA Tours, the price includes a non-refundable (FOR ANY REASON), deposit / administrative fee, which is listed on your tour brochure. In order to participate in a tour offering, an official participant tour application must be submitted along with the deposit. The deposit/administrative fee is considered your initial payment and is non-refundable for any reason. A subsequent deposit/administrative fee / payment will be due within 2-4 weeks by EA Tours. To learn more about what applies to your specific groups terms and conditions, please consult with your group’s coordinator or call our offices. TOUR PRICE/TOUR PAYMENT: All prices are based on tariffs, rates (if applicable) and governmental regulations in effect at the time of tour pricing and with notification may be subject to change. The tour price is based on multi-bedded rooms (generally, triples for international tours and quads for domestic tours) unless specifically stated otherwise in the brochure. For tours utilizing multi-bedded rooms, a guaranteed single or double room may be available upon request and will be charged as a supplemental fee. Entrance fees and other tour related items associated with certain venues may have age-sensitive pricing. Thus, occasional “adult” supplements may apply. Tour prices and arrangements offered are only valid with a scheduled group departure. Any balance due of final payment must be received by EA TOURS no later than seventy days (in some cases 90 days) prior to departure. All final payments must be paid within 48 hours after the listed due date on the applicable tour invoice or the participant will be charged a $95.00 late fee. Non-payment within the designated timelines may cause a participant to be subject to cancellation without refund benefits, whatsoever. Discover, Diner’s Club, VISA, MasterCard and American Express are accepted for payment. If you think you will have a problem with your final payment, please contact us. EA TOURS wants to work with you. PLEASE MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO EA TOURS. Any payment made TO EA TOURS is subject to the CANCELLATION/REFUND policies explained in both online and printed materials. The following policy applies if reservations for a tour are made 60 days or less (considered a late reservation) prior to departure: Any late reservation will be considered only after receiving the participant’s application and tour payment in full (less airline and governmental taxes or excess fees which will be billed at a later time). After the application and payment are received, the individual tour price and arrangements (if different from that of the group) will be determined. All fees due (including taxes, governmental surcharges, excess fees, etc.) must be paid in full before an airline ticket will be issued. Should an individual who applied 60 days or less determine that either the price or arrangements are unacceptable to the participant, they have the right to decline the offer and receive a full refund. Due to limited space, file your application/administration fee as soon as possible. TOUR CANCELLATION AND REFUND: Any cancellation/refund request must be submitted in writing and the effective date of cancellation will be the day that EA TOURS receives the written notice. For a cancellation/refund request received within 150 days, but not later than 100 days prior to departure, a refund minus 40% of the total tour price will be issued. For a cancellation/refund request received from 99 days, but not later than 60 days prior to departure, a refund minus 75% of the total tour price will be issued. For a cancellation/refund request received from 59 days, but not later than 31 days prior to departure, a refund minus 85% of the total tour price will be issued. A cancellation/refund request received 30 days or less prior to departure, or any tour participant who is a no-show for whatever reason, will not receive a refund of any kind. By making payments for the associated tour and signing below, I understand, accept and acknowledge that I have engaged EA TOURS and its partner(s) to work on my behalf. And as such, and because the tasks and work associated with making my related tour arrangements require payments (overhead) to be made to company employees, general company related overhead, consultants, tour related suppliers (hotels, airlines, reservation fees, transportation costs, restaurant reservation fees, etc.) as well as other yet to be determined resources, I accept the stipulated refund policies as totally acceptable, fair and reasonable and I will offer no dispute(s), whatsoever, to the stipulated refund policies. Cancellation by a tour participant due to concerns of terrorist activity will be considered as a subjective opinion of the tour participant and shall not be the basis of either a partial or full refund of monies paid, even if based on terrorist activity in the region of proposed travel. In the event a tour is scheduled to visit a country in which travel by U.S. citizens has been officially forbidden or outlawed by the United States government, for any reason, EA TOURS reserves the right to alter or change the dates and/or itinerary to avoid such areas that are potentially dangerous, or for which the U.S. government has issued travel warnings of any level, or which has been officially forbidden for travel by U.S. citizens without incurring a liability for refunds. State Department advisories and/or warnings do not constitute or imply that travel to the countries mentioned has been officially forbidden or outlawed. Additional fees may be applied in the event EA TOURS is instructed to make changes to the itinerary. In the event an institution elects not to offer a program or withdraws affiliation, for any reason, regardless of when that decision is made, EA TOURS is not liable for refunds of fees, except as outlined in the cancellation and refund section of this application. Furthermore, if a student withdraws, is suspended or expelled from a school (with whom travel is scheduled) and either the school or the student requests that they not participate in the tour, refunds will be issued in accordance with the terms outlined in the cancellation and refund section of the tour conditions. Tour participation is non-transferable. Please Note: Optional Tour Cancellation Insurance and Cancel For Any Reason Insurance is available and could help you avoid costly forfeitures. It is the responsibility of the participant to request information about optional travel insurance/coverage. TRANSPORTATION: Included in the tour price of each program, unless stated otherwise or not applicable, is airfare and/or other required ground transportation (city to city transport, some city sightseeing, inter-tour transportation, etc.). Based on past group size and/or information supplied by group leader / leaders, EA TOURS may reserve a specific number of airline seats at the beginning of the tour offering. In the unforeseen event that the number of tour participants exceeds the number of seats reserved, EA TOURS will request additional seats at the applicable group fare. However, in the unfortunate event that seats are not available, at the applicable group fare, the excess tour participants may be offered one of the following options: pay the difference in the airfare, receive a refund of all monies paid, or travel on a flight schedule different from the group’s. Even though EA TOURS strives to supply flights with as few flight changes as possible, no guarantee is made that either non-stop or direct flights will be used. Additionally, because EA TOURS does not control airline inventory, seating assignments, EA TOURS will request, but cannot guarantee, specific seating for any individual or group. Flight deviations are considered on a per case basis (requests for persons not traveling with the group either one way or round trip) and may be allowed by requests in writing and when allowed, will incur additional fees and be subject to any increase in the airfare which may be charged by the airline. Other fees / charges may apply. In the unforeseen event that an airline, train company or any supplier of transportation, alters/changes schedules, dates or type of equipment and additional costs are incurred, the participant agrees to pay any cost difference related to the changes. Furthermore, the participant understands and accepts that any additional costs to replace the pertinent/required transportation will be billed as a separate item and are not the responsibility of EA Tours. SIGHTSEEING: Most fees for items specified in the itinerary are included in the tour price. EA TOURS may offer and if offered, make information available concerning optional excursions in which the tour participant may wish to participate during their free time. In order to gain the maximum benefit of your tour, some of the sightseeing may include walking. GROUP SIZE: Most tour prices are based on a minimum of 15 paying tour participants traveling together. EA TOURS reserves the exclusive right to operate a program with ANY NUMBER of participants. Additionally, EA TOURS reserves the exclusive right to cancel a tour at its discretion. In the event a tour is canceled, the only responsibility of EA TOURS is to adhere to the terms stated in the “Cancellation and Refund” section of the tour conditions. HOTELS/MEALS: Hotel accommodations are based on multi-bedded rooms unless tour prices are based on specific guidelines as outlined on applicable tour brochure. Generally, the range is two, three, or four persons to a room. All hotels used will be good, middle class hotels and frequently the meals will be taken in the hotel. EA TOURS reserves the right to request either individually, or on a group basis, a refundable hotel damage deposit. In the event a hotel deposit is requested, EA TOURS will give the tour participant(s) as much written notice, as possible, of intent to collect a deposit. Damage deposits are usually no more than $100.00 per person, but may be more, and are fully refundable (pending hotel and bus inspections) following completion of the tour. In the event a damage deposit is required of tour participant(s), they will be given instructions as to the method of payment with written notice of intent. In the unforeseen event that due to male and female ratios being disproportionate for rooming purposes, and it becomes necessary for a single room to be utilized, the tour participant who will occupy the single room is responsible to pay a single supplement equal to approximately 25% of the total tour cost. Unless stated otherwise, most meals are included in each program. Occasionally a packed dinner/lunch will be provided as a main meal. Also, the participant will be given ample time and notice as to the meals which are deleted so that he/she will be able to plan accordingly. In the event a tour participant and/or entire group chooses to use a hotel, restaurant or any other services other than that selected by EA TOURS, additional expenditures are at the sole expense of the participant or group. NOT INCLUDED: Passport fees, port charges, any visas needed, drinks with meals, a la carte choice of menu, porterage, excess baggage, tourist cards, valet and room service, telephone calls, additional excursions, tour director and long-haul coach driver tips, governmental/ international airline taxes, credit card usage fees, Covid testing or any other illness related testing and any item not specifically mentioned in the itinerary is not included. BAGGAGE: Baggage limits are controlled by the airlines and usually limit passengers to 1 medium sized piece of checked luggage and one “under seat baggage.” Strict fees are applied on too many or overweight bags and are the sole responsibility of the participant. It is the responsibility of the participant to check with their respective airline to understand the exact size and weight restrictions imposed by that airline. EA TOURS allocates space for only one medium/large sized piece of luggage and one “under seat baggage.” In the event that group luggage exceeds the allocated space (either in weight or dimensions) on the provided group transportation and EA TOURS must hire or charter additional transportation to carry luggage, any excess fees may be shared by all members of the group. Please adhere to these luggage limits. CURFEW/RULES: All tour participants will conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner. It is understood that after dark, or any time otherwise determined and advised by tour leadership, any participant (12th grade or younger) must be with an advisor for evening activities. Chaperones will enforce the EA TOURS 12 o’clock midnight curfew for any participants that have not been high school graduates for longer than a year. Curfew for adult and college level participants is to be determined and advised by their respective chaperone/teacher. Consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors is expressly forbidden as subject to the laws governing the United States of America. Additional specific rules regarding curfew and other rules of behavior and conduct may apply. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: If traveling on a EA TOURS international journey, all US citizens will require a passport for travel outside of the country. Generally, passports must be valid for a minimum of 90 days after returning to the USA. Many countries require validity extending longer than 90 days. It is the responsibility of the participant to have a valid passport. It is the sole responsibility of the tour participant to be aware of pertinent guidelines of the countries they will be visiting. Most participants will be required to submit their passport number, expiration date and name AS APPEARS ON PASSPORT before departure. Any visa requirements for entrance into any country, or countries of a particular program as listed in the itinerary, is the sole responsibility of the tour participant. It is recommended that any necessary visa requirements be filed as early as possible prior to departure. TEACHER/CHAPERONE RESPONSIBILITY: According to the official rules and guidelines as prescribed by EA TOURS, accompanying teachers and chaperones are expected to assist in maintaining and setting an example of appropriate standards of discipline. Also, teachers and chaperones are not to be considered professional tour directors nor are they to act as such, thus freeing them of the responsibilities and liabilities involved with handling tour arrangements. Schools, teachers and/or chaperones and any other involved organization are not to be held responsible or liable for any occurrence or action taken, whatsoever, in conjunction with a tour offering or with the implementation of a tour. Parents participating in the tour are not to be considered chaperones and have no duties or responsibilities in tour leadership. INSURANCE AND MEDICAL CARE: Optional travel related insurance is recommended and available through EA TOURS. Tour cancellation insurance and Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance is valuable and could help you avoid costly forfeitures. For additional information concerning optional insurance, please contact EA TOURS. In the event that a tour participant becomes ill, loses important documents or for some other reason is unable to proceed with the group on the scheduled itinerary, it may be deemed necessary for another person (teacher, group leader or tour coordinator), for the purpose of assistance and security, to remain with the tour participant. If circumstances dictate that a person remain with the tour participant, then the tour participant must be prepared to pay any and all expenses (travel costs, meals, hotels, etc.) related to the incident for themselves and the person offering assistance. These expenses might include transportation costs to rejoin the group, meal costs, taxi fares and hotel costs. Naturally, when possible, every effort will be made to immediately notify parents and/or guardians. RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY: EA Tours responsibility is limited. It is responsible to the participants in making arrangements for accommodations and services furnished only for the dates as listed on the original applicable tour brochure. Furthermore, schools, teachers and/or advisors, and any other sponsoring organization are not to be held responsible or liable for any occurrence or action taken, whatsoever, in conjunction with a tour offering. EA Tours is not responsible, and shall pay no compensation due to delays, flight or other transportation changes, acts of war, terrorism, pandemics / global disasters and illness or causes beyond the control of EA TOURS and its partner(s). In the event that services and accommodations for the dates set forth in the original tour brochure cannot be supplied due to delays or causes beyond the control of EA TOURS and its partner(s), EA TOURS and its partner(s) will do all that is possible to supply compatible services and accommodations. In the event that EA TOURS, in its absolute discretion, determines that it is in the best interest of the tour participant to amend the services, accommodations or itinerary after the tour has commenced or in the event the accommodations or services are not used by the participant due to his voluntary omission, EA TOURS shall not give any tour participant a refund of the journey price and is not responsible for any rebooking fees, refunds or additional monies owed for transportation, hotel costs, meals or any other services which become nonrefundable by a supplier. In the event that EA TOURS, through its efforts, is able to secure accommodations and/or other services required to continue the operation of the tour (regardless of date), the tour participant explicitly understands that new arrangements may be at additional cost and agrees and accepts they will pay the applicable amount to enable their continuation on the tour. The tour participant and if applicable, his parents or guardians, hereby waives and releases any claim or cause action against EA TOURS, its officers, directors or partner(s) for any damages to or loss of property or injury to or death of the tour participant by any reason of any act of negligence whatsoever of any hotel, supplier, agency or person rendering any of the services and accommodations included in the tour, for any reason whatsoever beyond the control of EA TOURS and its partner(s). In the unlikely event that legal action is taken against EA TOURS and its partner(s) and/or its officers or directors, the tour participant and/or representative agrees to pursue such action in the state of Florida and the home country where the aforementioned parties are headquartered. The right is reserved to decline, accept or retain any person as a member of the tour at any time should such person’s health or impede the operation of the tour to the detriment of other participants. If the tour participant becomes ill or incapacitated, EA TOURS and its partner(s) may take such action, as it considers necessary, upon parental notification, to secure medical treatment and/or transport the tour participant to the United States, at the expense of the tour participant and/or parents and legal guardians. If at any time the tour participant does not adhere to the rules, general deportment standards and instructions of EA TOURS and/or its representative(s) the tour participant may be sent to their point of origin with their participation terminated, without a refund of fees, and at the expense of the tour participant and/or parents and legal guardians. In the event that tour participant leaves a tour for any reason, the sole responsibility of EA TOURS and/or its representatives is to attempt to make arrangements to escort the tour participant, at the participants expense, to the nearest airport/ bus depot/ train station/ or other exit gateway and aid, if applicable, with check-in and departure procedures. All prices are subject to Governmental, IATAN and ARC regulations if in effect at the actual time of departure. Non-refundable airline tickets must be paid 30 days prior to departure (subject to change). The above stated tour conditions are subject to revision and/or alteration without notice. The tour conditions listed on the tour participant application supersede and override those listed on the tour brochure. I understand that during an EA TOURS "tour", of which I will be a participant, photographs may be taken of tour participants individually or in group activities and at a later date may be using these photographs for advertising and promotional purposes. I do hereby give my permission to use such photographs, which may include photographs of me, as stated above. I agree that, in the unlikely event that a sponsoring organization, group, or school instructs EA TOURS to alter, change, delay, postpone or cancel my tour (in any way), I am subject to these changes and the tour conditions stated in this agreement. Additionally, I understand that as EA TOURS is responsible to oversee and organize the tour on which I wish to participate, that I will not take any action to interfere with, alter, change, or circumvent the rules, policies or procedures of EA TOURS management and leadership. I have read the terms and conditions set forth in EA Tours brochure and the application/participation agreement and I understand they constitute my agreement with EA Tours. By signing below and making payments for the associated tour, I understand, accept and acknowledge that I have engaged EA TOURS to work on my behalf. And as such, due to the tasks / work, (performed by EA TOURS) associated with making my related tour arrangements, require payments be made to company employees, general company related overhead, consultants, tour related suppliers (hotels, airlines, reservation fees, transportation costs, restaurant reservation fees, etc.) as well as other yet to be determined resources, I accept the stipulated refund policies as acceptable, fair and reasonable. In the event that proof of a vaccination (of any type) is required to travel by airlines, public transportation, hotels, restaurants or touring sites, by governmental entities or any tour other related entity, it is understood that it is the sole responsibility of the traveler to facilitate the acquisition of the vaccination(s) and to carry proof of vaccination. Costs for vaccination(s) or other related logistics are totally at the additional expense and responsibility of the traveler. If, after a traveler has made payments for a tour but subsequently elects not to receive a vaccination(s), or for any reason is unable to receive a vaccination in a time-frame that allows them to travel on the scheduled departure dates, regardless of the reason, the tour conditions and refund policies stated above apply and are not altered. It is further understood that, if in the event a participant contracts COVID-19, or any other illness, prior to departure and are unable to travel on the prescribed trip, they are still subject to the tour conditions and refund policy as stated in the online Application and Participation Agreement. I understand that in order to protect the investment I am and will be making, I should purchase "Cancel for Any Reason Trip Insurance." I also understand that, as there are very specific guidelines and policies dictated by individual Travel Insurers and Insurance Companies as to the timelines of when insurance may be purchased in relation to the timing of my filing my Application and Tour Participation Agreement, that travel insurance coverage should be purchased as soon as I file my Application and Tour Participation Agreement. I acknowledge that EA TOURS has requested that I thoroughly read and understand my policy. I further acknowledge that I am aware of the risks and dangers associated with international travel, including travel to where the tour I have joined is going. I have knowingly chosen to accept and assume all such associated risks and dangers due to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and / or any other virus, illness, sickness - known or unknown at this time. I hereby release, waive, covenant not to sue, hold harmless and forever discharge EA Tours and associated sponsoring or non-sponsoring organizations, any officials, employees, agents, and representatives from any and all liabilities, claims, damages, losses, expenses, injuries, or other harms, whether known or unknown, resulting from or related to my participation in the Tour, its activities, or the associated travel. I agree to indemnify and hold EA Tours, Inc., its Board of Directors, Advisory Board Members, Managers, and associated sponsoring, or non-sponsoring, affiliated organizations and its officials, employees, agents, and representatives harmless from and against any and all any and all liabilities, claims, damages, losses, expenses (including but not limited to reasonable attorneys' fees and other litigation costs and expenses), injuries, or other harms incurred by EA Tours and associated sponsoring, non-sponsoring and / or affiliated organizations or any of its officials, employees, agents, and representatives as a result of any claims or suits that I (or anyone claiming by, under, or through me) may bring to recover any liabilities, claims, damages, losses, expenses, injuries, or other harms that arise during or as a result of my participation in the Tour, its activities, or the associated travel. I expressly agree that this Voluntary Release and Waiver of Liability is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of Florida. I acknowledge that I have carefully read this Voluntary Release and Waiver of Liability and fully understand that it is a release of all liability and that I am knowingly and voluntarily executing this agreement. By signing below, I express my understanding of the scope of this Voluntary Release and Waiver of Liability and acknowledge my knowing and voluntary intent to enter into the agreement. PARENT PARTICIPANTS: Specifically, I will not undertake to encourage tour participants to leave group activities, not attend group activities, or depart from the group’s scheduled itinerary at any time unless specifically approved by tour leadership. I understand that, unless informed of my role as a chaperone and briefed on EA TOURS official rules and guidelines, I have no duties or responsibilities in tour leadership. By signing below, I acknowledge that I have chosen to participate in the tour offered by EA Tours, a Florida Corporation and, that I do so of my own choosing and my own free will.

The stated Tour Conditions contain references to a broad range of items and options which may not apply to your specific tour offering. If applicable, please refer to the Special Tour Conditions section of your brochure for pertinent details.

The Final EA considers the comments received during the public comment period (November 19 - December 20, 2021) of the Draft EA, which analyzed the potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts associated with the improvement of approximately 33 miles of existing road segments on BLM-administered lands near the U.S./Mexico international border. Road maintenance and repair on BLM-administered public lands would be done to facilitate USBP patrol interdiction and emergency response along the border to deter and prevent illegal cross-border activity.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.? See the paths for the 2044 and 2045 events

By Cara Tabachnick

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 2:31 AM EDT / CBS News

Eclipse-watchers waited more than six years since the last time a total solar eclipse charted its way across the United States,  in 2017 . After the  April 8 event , prepare to wait a lot longer — the next chance won't be coming around any time soon.

Viewers in what's called " the path of totality " saw the moon completely block the sun  — an opportunity those in North America won't have again for 20-plus years. The next total solar eclipses in North America are not anticipated until 2044 and 2045.

"A total solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular things anyone can see in their lifetime," Virginia Tech astrophysicist Nahum Arav told CBS News. The eclipse "looks like a black hole in the sky," said Arav, who watched the paths of totality of eclipses in 1991 and 2017.

The total eclipse of the sun. The rays of light appear as

Monday's eclipse started around 11:07 a.m. PDT on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, and then moved into Texas . The eclipse's visibility tracked  through 15 states  — Oklahoma, Illinois , Ohio,  Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont ,  New Hampshire  and Maine , among them — before heading northward into Canada and then exiting North America.

Even with spotty weather in some states, millions of people from coast to coast saw a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon partially covers the sun. However, only those within the path of totality experienced the darkness of the total solar eclipse.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. after the 2024 eclipse?

Solar eclipses happen about twice a year, said Arav. "Eclipses happen all over the Earth evenly," he told CBS News — but noted the timings when they occur are not regular. That means  eclipses can occur within just a few years, or every few decades, in North America.

Before the eclipse in 2017, the last total solar eclipse to cross North America was in 1979 . That was the first eclipse whose path of totality crossed the entire continent in 99 years.

Even though eclipses may seem to occur randomly, scientists can pinpoint exactly when and where they will happen.

"There is no ambiguity, as we know exactly where it will land," said Arav.

There will be eight total solar eclipses visible from North America in the 21st century, Arav said, with one occurring about every 12 years, on average.

The next total solar eclipse to cross North America is predicted to occur on Aug. 23, 2044 , NASA said. However, the path of totality from this eclipse will only touch three states, according to  The Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public interest in space.

This next eclipse will mainly be observed in Canada, Arav said.

Path of totality for the 2044 total solar eclipse

The 2044 eclipse will start in Greenland on Aug. 23, 2044, and will continue its path through Canada.

The 2044 total solar eclipse will be short, mostly appearing in Canada. It will be visible from three states in the U.S.: Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The path of totality will cross Williston and Dickinson, North Dakota, and Great Falls, Montana.

Path of totality for the 2045 total solar eclipse

The next solar eclipse that crosses a significant portion of the continental U.S. will be in 2045, said Arav. That year, a solar eclipse will darken skies in parts of the U.S., Haiti, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil.

In North America, the 2045 total eclipse will be visible in many states as it moves from coast to coast. The eclipse will start in California and move east to end in Florida, similar to 2017, Arav said.

There will be numerous U.S. cities where eclipse watchers can view the total eclipse, including Reno, Nevada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Orlando, Florida.

Future solar eclipses in North America after 2045

Scientists have predicted eight total solar eclipses will appear in North America in the 21st century.

"Natural phenomena are like a Swiss clock," Arav said. "We know exactly when and where they will appear."

After the 2044 and 2045 total solar eclipses, the next total eclipses in North America will occur in 2078 and 2099.

May 11, 2078

This total solar eclipse on May 11, 2078 , will pass over the southern United States.

Cities include:

Atlanta, Georgia

New Orleans, Louisiana

Charlotte, North Carolina

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Sept. 14, 2099

This total solar eclipse on Sept. 14, 2099 , will cross a wide swath of the United States.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

ea event travel

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity.

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic."

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

Update on spending for cea-run events.

TL;DR:  Spending on events run and supported by CEA (including EA Global and EAGx conferences) will likely be reduced due to a decrease in available funding. This might influence travel grants, catering, volunteering, ticketing, and non-critical conference expenses.

The CEA events team is responsible  for numerous events in the EA community , including EA Global, EAGx, and various retreat programs. We (the CEA events team) expect to reduce spending on events we run in the coming year due to:

  • The  FTX situation
  • The reduction in funds available to Open Philanthropy (partially due to a general stock market decline)
  • The growth of the EA community — meaning that grantmakers now have more alternative funding opportunities. i.e., we’re no longer one of the very few things available for them to fund (this is a good thing!)

At this stage, we’re still navigating the new funding landscape and we aren’t sure what this means going forwards, but some potential consequences include:

Travel grant funding will likely be more restrictive. Previously we’ve funded people to travel to any EA conference they’ve been accepted to. We expect to retain some amount of travel funding moving forwards, but we’ll likely have to be much more conservative about how much we give and who we give it to. When planning around an event,  we’d recommend you act under the assumption that we will  not be able to grant your travel funding request (unless it has already been approved).
Catering will likely be cut down. We’ll likely have to stop providing all three of breakfast, lunch, and dinner on each day for our conferences — we still expect to have  some food or snacks available, but it’s currently unclear exactly what we’ll be able to provide.
  • We might go back to a volunteer model for people working at EA Global (we trialed paying “volunteers” at the last two EA Globals).
We might introduce a variable pricing ticketing system where we ask people with higher incomes to pay more for their tickets (we expect to still have free and reduced cost tickets available for students and those on lower incomes).
  • We might need to limit capacity at certain events (whereas previously we always accepted people if they were above a certain bar).

If you have any questions or concerns, you can email us at  [email protected] or comment below (though we may not be able to respond to all comments).

Thanks for the update.

I'd like to recommend that part of the process review for providing travel grant funding includes consideration of the application process timing for CEA-run or supported events. In my experience, key dates in the process (open, consideration/decision, notification of acceptance, notification of travel grant funding) happen much closer to the date  of the event than other academic or trade conferences.

For example, in 2022, several Australian EAs I know applied ~90 days in advance of EAG London or EAG SF, but were accepted only around 30-40 days before the event.  A slow application process creates several issues for international attendees:

  • Notice is needed for employment leave . Prospective attendees who are employed usually need to submit an application for leave with 1+ months notice, especially for a trip of ~1 week or longer needed for international travel. Shorter notice can create conflict or ill-feeling between the employee and employer.
  • Flight prices increase as the travel date approaches . An Australian report recommended booking international flights 6 months ahead of the date of travel. A Google report recommended booking internati

Based on your comment I looked this up:

Right now flights from London to San Francisco cost £400-£500, compared to what they may be shorter notice (approx £1500+ in some cases). The difference is 2-4x , and you could buy flights + accommodation for a week now (around 2 months out) for less than just the flights may be around 2 weeks out (which is when the EA Global website says you would hear by). This is a significant difference when acting under the assumption of not being able to receive travel grant funding. I can see this in many cases being the difference between 'I can afford to go' and 'I cannot + will need the travel funding', particularly as hotels are also likely to get sold out and the remaining ones potentially being more expensive or further away.

For EAGs, there was the policy of if you were accepted into one in a year, you would be accepted into all of them. If this will continue being the same, it feels like perhaps there should be an application round early, so people could know that they would get into future conferences (if they wanted to) and book flights/accommodation in advance accordingly.

(For EAGxs the apply to one get into everything policy did not exist, but those are meant to be regional so the travel costs are significantly less anyway, at least within Europe)

Thanks for your detailed comment! I work on the events team so I can add some info.  Yep, we broadly agree here. We're keen to open and review applications earlier than we have been doing, for many of the reasons you mention. It's something we've been actively working on for a while, but unfortunately we have been dealing with a variety of bottlenecks on this front. We have designed a new application system for EAG 2023, which will open  very soon. It's an application for all of the EAGs in 2023, rather than on a conference by conference basis. So, once people are accepted, they can then register (and plan/book travel for) any of the announced EAGs in 2023.

EAGx admissions are done by their respective organising teams, as they are community hosted. CEA just supports them, so we can't directly control their admissions turnaround, but we are making systems improvements that the EAGx teams can benefit from too. This will hopefully help somewhat!

FWIW there were lots of cause area themed / profession themed dinners at external venues on both days of EAGx Oxford and EAG London this year, despite the catered dinner being available, so that seems like a sensible area for you guys to cut spending.

A bit concerned about travel funding reductions though, as that might have negative effects on cultural diversity within EA. Might make sense to target this reduction further, eg - retaining funding for people in LMICs but not providing it for people in HICs.

I am somewhat surprised by some of these choices, and I'd be somewhat interested in hearing more about the reasoning (but no problem if you think it's too time-consuming to explain).

Re catering, here's my quick, very low-confidence estimate:

  • I'd have thought that access to catered dinners maybe increases the value of EAG by as much as making the event have twenty more minutes in it. (Because people otherwise have to go find dinner elsewhere in a way that might be inefficient, and they will have to get dinner in a place that is worse for mingling.)
  • Maybe the cost per person is like $30 (and if you don't cater, the attendees have to spend money on dinner themselves)
  • So the dinners buy you an EAG-equivalent hour for $90.
  • EDIT: Actually, I think my $4k estimate is probably wrong; I now vaguely remember that EAGs cost $2k/attendee, at which the dinners still look better than EAG as a whole but not as

If there's not enough money to pay for all the things they're now considering cancelling, and you think they're making a mistake, shouldn't you bring up ideas for where else to save money rather than argue that some things are "cost effective"? "Cost effective" is relative to how much money you have available – if the money were extremely thin then all but the very best spending opportunities have to be cancelled!

I also was surprised to see meals being one of the places to cut, for similar reasons to Buck (but with more emphasis on "if you don't cater, the attendees have to spend money on dinner themselves").

If grant funding isn't enough to cover food, the natural place to make this up is in the event pricing, which is already a sliding scale.

Catering can often be a lot more than $30 USD per person per meal. And it's also sometimes necessary to go with a certain catering company and meet a minimum in order to book a venue.

I don't think we should think of EA as having "not enough money to pay for all the things they're now considering cancelling". Open Phil has enough money for at least a decade of longtermist spending at current rates; the fact that they aren't spending all their money right now means that they think that there will be grant opportunities in the future that are better than grant opportunities that they choose not to make now.

Decisions to cut back on spending on a community-wide level shouldn't be made from the perspective of short-term budgetary constraints, they should be made by thinking about what opportunities we'll have over the long term.

(That said, for practical reasons it does make sense for funders to give organizations budgets and then have those organizations try to optimize their spending subject to the budget constraint, instead of just giving all organizations a blank check and saying "please only spend money that is better than our last dollar". But this is not the frame we should use when we're deciding e.g. how much total funding EAGs should have.)

Your first comment sounded like you're criticizing CEA for their allocation of resources. Your second reply now sounds more like you're criticzing funders (like Open Phil) for not increasing CEA's budget. (Or maybe CEA for not asking for a funding increase more aggressively.) I guess the main thing you're saying  is that you find it hard to believe everyone is acting optimally if we have to cut back on EAGs in these ways, given that money isn't that tight in the EA movement as a whole.

Seconding this: I think food at EAG is really high-impact:

  • It keeps people together in one place (rather than dispersing to restaurants).
  • It gives a natural informal social time.
  • It stops people from wasting time/energy finding food.

That last one is particularly valuable if, like me, you find one-on-one meetings both valuable and draining, and end up with ~no energy by the end of the day.

In terms of tradeoffs, I'd much prefer (full catering + worse venue) over (reduced catering + nicer venue), and I think that applies even if the venue is like, a tent in a field 20 miles from Heathrow.

To give people some idea about the cost of EAGX's: for Prague, where we had about 400 attendees, the cost was roughly £270 per person, and out of that, £120 was for food. Our venue didn't have its own catering so we could arrange what we wanted on whatever scale we wanted. We could easily just do lunch and snacks.

I hope that there is an emphasis on increasing the quality and focus on virtual events in the future. I want to be able to meet people in different cities who can't cover travel costs themselves but it feels like virtual events are not as prioritised, so in the past the types of people I would have wanted to talk to mostly did not engage as much with them.

I'd be curious to see a breakdown of catering costs in SF, DC & London if you have them - specifically costs per meal, for drinks, and for snacks and what % of the total budget food has been. Things I think are more or less important (but don't have a sense of where the budget cut-offs are, hence the request for breakdown)

  • I think having some kind of breakfast (even if it's just bread/peanut butter/ hummus/bananas) feels super important for essentially buying an extra 1-2 hours per person. If catering doesn't allow for a lighter breakfast and/or doesn't allow outside food etc. [edit: breakfast could also just be snacks/protein bars/etc.]
  • From my limited catering knowledge, drinks are usually the most expensive, so if not serving drinks during opening / closing speeches could potentially subsidise breakfasts / more food, that seems worth it.
Snacks also feel more optional

I'd be very curious how far EAG could go by just focusing on Soylent / Huel  / Mealsquares.

I can imagine you could get pretty serious savings by making a deal with a small number of brands for a large purchase. I would suspect EA's account for a serious proportion of these brand's revenue, and EAG's are the ideal place for them to market to new EA's and EA adjacent individuals, so they'd stand to gain a lot from even just providing merchandise at-cost.

Also, when hosting retreats,  Soylent was always the most in demand item.

I have not loved the catering at past EAG events (EAG London, EAG SF, EAG DC... the exception was EAGx Boston, whose catering I thought was very good. Though no disrespect to CEA - I've handled event catering and it is hell . ). At all of these, I actually would have preferred it if instead of some (most) catered meals there were just assorted Huels (There has been soylent - but I can't stand soylent).

Lastly, I think this would be pretty funny.  It's a pretty severe change, but I'd be curious to see how EAG participants would respond to this if proposed in a survey, and it's a fun visual symbol of "efficiency and cost effectiveness vibes " so there's some signaling benefit.

To continue the tangent, I'm pretty sure this is not true for Huel. From their UK website :

All ingredients listed in Huel Powder v3.0 and Black Edition Huel are low FODMAP and for this reason they can be used alongside the Low FODMAP Diet and as part of your dietary routine if you have IBS. If you have IBS and an extremely busy lifestyle where convenience is a top priority, Huel could form a part of your eating routine to ensure you are achieving a regular meal pattern and optimal nutrition.

I strongly disagree fwiw; it was seriously inconvenient for me that there weren't snacks at EAGx Berkeley recently. And they're not very expensive compared to catering actual meals, I think.

these are mostly educated guesses:

  • some people (20%?) will arrive later to the conference venue if they need to get food first (30-60m later if you incl. transport, buying, eating outside the venue etc.). for those people, they might have had either 1-1s or casual conversations over breakfast.
  • some people (10?) might be more tired or have a less good experience if they come early but don't have time to get breakfast (so it's not really buying hours, but quality-adjust hours?)
  • some people (1%? 5%?) might come in much later if they know there won't be food til lunch

There's several comments here about the catering part, so I just wanted to say that cutting down on catering doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I'll bring some trail mix.

This seems like it might be a bit of a false economy. People need to eat, and there are probably economies of scale in food purchasing that make it easier to buy in bulk (both financially and in time spent). Additionally, if food is funded by CEA (rather than from ticket sales) then the conferences are buying it with pre-tax dollars. Also, proper catering helps the conference have proper vibes.

Against this we have to consider the fact that not everyone likes the same food, for example if the conference only serves vegan food but some attendees want to eat meat. But on the whole my impression is the median attendee has found the food satisfactory.

My guess is that if you (hypothetically) offered people the choice between tickets with and without food, with the price difference set as the average per-capita cost of catering, then most people would choose to pay the higher price.

I've seen this discussed on some other comments, though I'll just respond to this one point here: catered food as provided by most large venues and caterers (at least in the US) is generally much more expensive per person than people just buying meals on their own at normal restaurants, it's not a simple case of economies of scale unfortunately — there's a big mark up.

We generally have to use the caterer the venue provides or recommends (or pay a fee) — and if that's not the case we're generally pretty limited in our options anyway. These caterers (e.g. the ones based out of a hotel) are usually not vegan only and we just get them to build out a vegan-specific menu. I've often seen the pricing for their standard non-vegan stuff (for hypothetical events a year in advance) and it doesn't differ that much.

My guess of what's going on here is that these venues often make a substantial amount of money through their catering, and they don't have back to back meals (like a restaurant does), and so they charge a substantial mark up.

Super interesting, thanks for sharing! This has completely changed my mind from "CEA Events seem to be screwing up" to "huh, this seems entirely reasonable, and is just some weird market failure"

Not hugely surprising, given the people at CEA have certainly thought about this more than random forum users. Still, it's good to do diligence. Thank you Eli for responding; this is a model example of somebody graciously explaining non-obvious considerations in a decision.

It seems like a good solution to consider would be to host a few/several EA global events/conferences/other events in countries with cheaper operating costs. There are several countries that are cheaper than US/UK and are still extremely safe and accessible for several people (if anything, some other countries have more liberal visa conditions that would cut down visa spending costs as well). Money spent per person could go long way in other countries and you wouldn't need to compromise funding people who could benefit from the conferences but can't afford them otherwise.

I find this appealing but then I realised that most EAG attendees are US and UK based, so it'd result in "attendees" as a group spending more money on traveling to the conference. But maybe this expense would still be outweighed by the savings.

EAGx is in Mexico in a few weeks: https://www.eaglobal.org/events/eagx-latam/

I  think this is something worth calculating, but I think we should consider that there are several people, who, for various visa-related issues, don't make it to UK/US conferences or who feel less incentive to travel due to other reasons (for instance if you have a full-time job outside of EA it can be tricky to ask for a day off at times) so it can make it seem like conference-goer EAs are mostly from the UK and the US. I don't know how seriously has this option been considered before. While I know these two countries have bigger EA populations, I wonder if traveling to a cheaper country and having the same conference conditions is better than traveling within the same country and having fewer resources available. I don't know if in terms of distance traveled someone from Utah would care significantly whether the conference is in SF/DC or Mexico City, or whether someone from England/Wales cares whether the conference is in London or Porto/Riga/Rome/Prague. I live in London and I feel like there are several cheap flights to other European countries from here, and flights within Europe are generally affordable at times.

And/or holding these events out of fancy urban centers perhaps?

I really like the availability of food at EAGs. I'd spend more and be hungrier if that weren't the case. Here are some suggestions to reduce costs while not reducing availability:

  • Reduce the amount of alcohol. This feels less important to me, though I guess I don't really drink so I'm biased
  • Reduce the amount of snacks/ deserts. I like these but they seem less important than ensuring people are fed
  • Have less fancy vegan food. I would happily eat beyond meat burgers like 25% of the time, or as a filler alongside the nicer food
  • Have less huel/soylent. I like this, but maybe there is a cheaper option. The bottled stuff is pretty pricey.

For various reasons, there may be a difference between returning all that is legally required and returning every penny received (we don't know yet). From an optics perspective, I think there is very much a reputational hit for any charity -- EA or not -- that does not return an amount equal to what it got. But that hit is magnified if it then spends money in a way that seems to benefit insiders more than the charitable mission.

I wasn't intending to restate the debate over whether monies used to fund meta things would be better spent on direct work -- I have my opinions on that (which would favor no free alcohol for the reasons you imply), but I don't presume that I have anything to add to what has been said in the past on the meta/direct tradeoff more generally.

On the broader scale, I think one of the greatest long-term existential risks to any charitable organization or movement is a slow, nearly inperceptible drift to decisions being made based on the interests of insiders as opposed to beneficiaries. It's happened too many times to count with other charities/movement, and is in my mind a likely outcome for any charity/movement that does not maintain constant vigilance surrounding its culture. So in addition to the optics question and the question you posed, I would ask: "Does incurring this expense create a risk of subtly moving culture and expectations away from a beneficiary-focused mission, in which meta is a means to an end and not an ultimate end in itself?"

On point 3. I can imagine a "staggered" stipend system worth experimenting with, where volunteers can choose from e.g. 0, 100, 200, 500 USD etc. based on their own needs.

Reasons why I think this could work: - Some volunteers that have less financial stability could really benefit from getting this option (the intrinsic motivation for wanting to volunteer doesn't take away  thoughts of struggling financially. And I'm not saying volunteering should be an alternative for earning money but if that ends up being the decision ultimately, some people might need to decide to spend those volunteer hours doing other work. Especially if the volunteering requires several hours of travelling.) - Volunteers are nudged to think about trade-offs (e.g. do I really need the additional 100 USD if for example they are choosing between a 100 and 200 stipend)

The idea of there being increased financial barriers to attending conferences concerns me a lot.

I'd hate to end up in a situation where lower income people or students are discouraged from even applying because they know they won't be able to afford it. I know it would be soul crushing for many people to receive an email saying they've been accepted, but be unable to consider attending due to financial barriers.

I'd have a preference for smaller events where people are guaranteed funding if they need. I think that looking after a smaller group of people very well can be better than a large group of people having a worse experience.

There's a chance that these increased financial barriers could negatively affect the geographic and socioeconomic diversity in EA that some people have been working hard to improve.

Is there information about how the rest of CEA's budget is affected by the circumstances above? That might help people put these reductions in context.

I think it would be good to clarify how this affects people with less financial stability and/or who are based in countries that are farther away (specifically for EAG's). To me, providing funding for these groups seems like the biggest positives, since they would be least likely to attend without support. [edit: and generally have less opportunities for meeting the international EA community]

Agree, besides being further away, this would most probably reduce the number of EAs from LMICs who go to  EA conferences. I'm from Turkey and the limited number of people from Turkey who have gone to an EAGx did so because there was travel funding(including my first two conferences) and I'm quite confident none of them would be able to go if there was no funding(because I personally know them). I was thinking that 6 people from our college group would come to the next EAGx in Europe, but if there is no travel funding no one besides me most probably  won't go(and I would be able to go because I'm on an EA fellowship!)  Still, I'm not saying all EAs from LMICs should be reimbursed or it makes sense to fund people who wouldn't otherwise be able to come to conferences(if they didn't receive funding) but i) on the margin providing travels grants to people from countries with low EA presence may have higher bang for the buck ii)A very selective travel grants policy would have this consequence(effectively reducing a considerable number of EAs based in LMICs from participating in EAGs)

Thanks for sharing these details.

Is this new? I recall there being a tiering structure already. Or does this effectively mean there will be new, extra-high tiers on top?

Yep that's right, there were already tiered discounts available, but now we'll likely be asking higher earners to pay more for their tickets (i.e., a new extra-high tier).

I wonder if cheaper venues further out could be worth considering?

If most conference attendees don't live in the city but only travel there for the conference, they might not care much if it's in the center or else where. I (and many others I spoke to) actually would prefer an EAG London in a less expensive, less central part of the city.

Thanks for the update. I think it would be valuable if you further update which of all these [things that might happen] are actually going to happen, once you know.

Excited to hear that you're considering variable ticket pricing!

This worked very well for us at German EA retreats - people paid anywhere from 50-200€ per ticket and we reached our target of 100€ on average.

Have we considered not having the events be vegan? Seems like it adds a lot of cost. If they were 50% vegan how much would be saved?

It doesn’t really add much cost, pricing for vegan vs non vegan items under standard large venue caterers is pretty similar.

I'd be excited about CEA hosting or supporting more virtual conferences. These are far cheaper than in-person events, are more accessible in many ways, and I'd estimate they capture about 60% of the value for an individual attendee that an in-person event does.

I could imagine 2-3 of these happening in 2023, perhaps including some for more specific audiences like the previous student summit . These would have the advantage of being able to have a much lower bar for entry (since costs don't increase as linearly as in-person conferences). They could therefore ... (read more)

Thanks for the update! I am curious about the odds of EA-London not being fully catered so I created a market: " Will EAG London 2023 be fully catered ?".

Vice President Kamala Harris returning to Arizona for abortion-related campaign event

ea event travel

On the heels of the Arizona Supreme Court’s upholding a Civil War-era abortion ban, Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Tucson on Friday for an event focused on “reproductive freedom,” the Biden-Harris re-election campaign announced Tuesday.

Harris has traveled across the country to rail against Republican-led attempts to restrict abortion. She appeared in Phoenix in early March to argue that Arizona’s laws “criminalize doctors" and "punish" women, calling the state’s anti-abortion advocates “extremists.”

Her visit will come days after the Arizona Supreme Court’s highly anticipated ruling on the topic. On Tuesday morning, the court announced it will uphold an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions and mandates prison time for abortion providers.

Arizona Supreme Court: Abortion set to be illegal in nearly all circumstances

Republican politicians had asked the courts to allow police and prosecutors to enforce the territorial-era law, after the U.S. Supreme Court rolled back protections afforded by the landmark abortion case Roe vs. Wade.

The campaign did not immediately release further details about Harris' upcoming visit.

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, released his platform on abortion on Monday. Trump endorsed the Supreme Court’s rollback of Roe vs. Wade and said he believes the matter should be left to the states. He did not endorse a national ban on abortion, which has been floated by some in his party.

“My view is now that we have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state,” the former president said in a video posted to social media.

He said he is “strongly in favor of exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother,” though many states have implemented abortion bans that do not have those exceptions.

Arizona is considered a swing state in the upcoming presidential election. In 2020, Harris and President Joe Biden beat Trump in the state by less than half a percentage point.

The White House has ramped up its presence in Arizona accordingly. The president, vice president, both of their spouses and several other campaign surrogates have visited Arizona since the beginning of March.
