Some travelers live on the edge. Never satisfied with lazing away their vacation days on the beach, these thrill seekers look for adventure on their days off. If orbiting the Earth, diving in shark-infested waters, or getting up-close-and-personal with a gorilla sounds like your idea of a good time, you're in luck. We've found 10 extreme travel adventures to get your heart racing and, just in case you aren't quite ready to light yourself on fire in a movie-quality stunt, we've also included a similar – albeit less-adrenaline-pulsing – alternative with each of our top adventure-filled trips.

Use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals.

If your adrenaline pumps just watching The Fast and the Furious , your heart will feel like it's about to come out of your chest when you experience the real thing. Street racing is illegal, but law-abiding drag racing schools abound. Doug Foley's Drag Racing School ( www.dougfoley.com ) holds several public events across the nation (2010 dates are still scheduled in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and more); for the highest HBM (heart beats per minute), opt for the Super Comp Dragster package, a one-day extreme travel program that includes safety instruction and step-by-step familiarization with your car. Then it's time to hit the track, open the throttle, and make like Mario Andretti.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: Not quite ready to get behind the wheel? Get behind Andretti himself and ride with him when you sign up for a Mario Andretti Fantasy Day (hosted by the Mario Adretti Racing School; dev.andrettigordon.com ; 2010 dates and location TBD). Yes, autographs are included.

Gorilla Safari

For the chance to interact with the one of the world's most-endangered species, follow in the footsteps of Dian Fossey, the anthropologist immortalized in the 1988 movie Gorillas in the Mist . No more than 790 mountain gorillas remain, but Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is still the best place on the planet to spot one of these gentle herbivores. Their distinctive personalities are endearing, while the ruins of the Karisoke Research station where Fossey was murdered and buried are themselves quite moving. JK Safaris ( www.gorillasafaris.net ) runs four-day safaris to the area that include eco-lodge stays.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: If you're not up to the extreme travel necessary to track the mountain gorillas, a visit to Monkey Mountain ( www.montagnedessinges.com ) in France provides primate interactions of a different kind: the 280 Barbary Macaques monkeys here roam free among visitors, but, be careful: These mischievous creatures are known to take food right out of visitors' hands!

Use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals to Rwanda.

If you're a top-notch skier with a penchant for adrenaline, get off the trails and take to the skies by boarding a chopper and going heli-skiing, a sport that makes the trek up the mountain as exciting as the run down. Lured by the promise of untouched slopes, wilderness solitude, and challenging terrain, those who dare to get airborne access otherwise inaccessible peaks. Valdez Heli-Camps ( www.valdezhelicamps.com ) operates tours to the Chugach Mountains in Alaska; serious extremists book the four- or six-day Sound to Summit package that tackles Chugach's 13,000-foot peak and offers accommodations on a ship (complete with heliport) anchored in the Prince William Sound.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: Have a fear of flying? Consider backcountry skiing in the Colorado Rockies instead; Paragon Guides ( www.paragonguides.com ) offers great off-the-trail treks in Vail for a slightly less extreme travel adventure in the snow.

For more trip-planning information, see our Alaska Travel Guide , then search for Alaska travel deals .

Mountain Climb

As the holy grail of mountain climbing, the legend of Mount Everest looms large in travelers' minds, and with good reason: Risking passage through the "death zone" (which takes lives every year) and reaching the summit is the achievement of a lifetime. If you're an accomplished climber, Adventure Consultants ( www.adventureconsultants.com ) offers summit expeditions from Nepal that will set you back about $65,000 and come with no guarantees of summiting.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: If you've just got to see Everest but don't want to risk your life on extreme travel (or spend your life savings to do it), entirely doable (and more affordable) trips to base camp – complete with spectacular views – are available from KE Adventure Travel ( www.keadventure.com ) from $1,915.

Use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals to Nepal.

Whether you already consider snowboarding passé or simply can't wait till winter to carve up the slopes, try strapping on your board and tackling a mountain of sand. Sandboarding is a four-season extreme sport that's recently gained in popularity with snowboarders looking for a similar rush surrounded by surreal, desert landscapes. Sure, you could try surfing the dunes at your local beach, but for the real deal, head to Cerro Blanco near the Andes mountain range in Peru to find the world's tallest sand dune. Peru Adventure Tours ( www.peruadventurestours.com ) runs 8-hour extreme travel outings that include board rental and lunch.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: If carving up the sand isn't your thing, explore via dune buggy in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area ( www.oregon.gov/OPRD ) instead.

See our Peru Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals to Peru.

If Jaws didn't permanently scare you out of the water, pack your gear and go deep-sea diving with the sharks off the coast of Cape Point, South Africa. Apex Shark Expeditions ( www.apexpredators.com ) runs day trips into False Bay (some 30 minutes from Cape Town) between November and June, inviting you to swim for over an hour with Mako and blue sharks without anything but your wet suit between you and their fins.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: Check out the world's largest predatory shark – the great white – in the Pacific waters around Mexico's Isla Guadalupe. Granted, this is still plenty adrenaline inducing, but Shark Diver's ( www.sharkdiver.com ) slightly less-extreme travel option puts you underwater – and safely behind bars – in a secure steel cage.

See our South Africa Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals to South Africa.

Space Travel

The typical vacation will liberate you from the tedious orbit of the work day, but the 10-day space journey offered by Virginia-based Space Adventures ( www.spaceadventures.com ) blasts you from a launch pad in Kazakhstan into the actual orbit of the Earth, where gravity itself becomes obsolete as you circle the globe every 90 minutes. But if the thought of piggybacking on a Russian rocket for a cool $40 million grounds your extreme travel dreams, wait for a comfy chair on Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic ( www.virgingalactic.com ), which launched its first staffed flights in 2010: Paying passengers will have to wait till at least 2012 to hop aboard suborbital flights – but they'll "only" set you back a comparatively pocket-friendly $200,000.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: Zero-gravity thrills at an even less-astronomical price ($4,950) are available in Las Vegas or in Cape Canaveral and Titusville, both in Florida, through Zero G ( www.gozerog.com ; a Space Adventures subsidiary), where you can simulate weightlessness via the same parabolic-flight maneuvers used to film a buoyant Tom Hanks in Apollo 13 .

Rappel down the side of a limestone cliff, squeeze through damp crevices covered with luminescent glowworms, leap from a subterranean waterfall, and go "black-water rafting" in the underground rapids at Ruakuri Cave, part of the otherworldly Waitomo cave system in New Zealand. The five-hour Black Abyss travel adventure offered by The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. ( www.waitomo.com/black-water-rafting ) is the most challenging of the region's guided extreme travel tours, with a mix of climbing, rappelling, and cave tubing.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: For a less-demanding domestic descent, go to Carlsbad Caverns National Park ( www.nps.gov/cave ) in southern New Mexico. Rather than rivers and waterfalls, the 300 caves here were carved out by limestone-dissolving sulfuric acid, making for a much drier – yet still "deeply" satisfying – experience.

See our New Zealand Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find flight, hotel, cruise, and more travel deals to New Zealand.

Stunt Studies

Making a living as a stunt person sounds crazy to most, but if you fancy yourself an adrenaline junkie, it probably sounds like a dream job. For a taste of the car chases, burning buildings, and free falls seen in high-octane action movies, head to Las Vegas. Thrillseekers Unlimited ( www.thrillseekersunlimited.com ) offers heart-pounding extreme travel adventures taught by working SAG stunt professionals; book the five-day Stunt Experience and you'll stunt fight and even be set on fire by your well-trained instructor.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: Get ready for your high-jump close up by trying a tandem skydive –  they're offered at hundreds of locations across the country.

For more trip-planning information, see our Las Vegas Travel Guide , then search for Las Vegas travel deals .

Titanic Dive

You've seen the movie, but nothing prepares you for seeing the RMS Titanic up close. You don't have to be an oceanographer to get a look at the shipwreck of all shipwrecks, either – head to Newfoundland, where The Great Canadian Adventure Company ( www.adventures.ca ) runs expeditions aboard the Akademik Keldysh , a Russian research vessel capable of descending nearly 2.5 miles underwater to reach the ship's resting place. The privilege of seeing the Titanic up close costs nearly $55,000, but, for fanatics and extreme travel junkies alike, it's a small price to pay to be one of the first non-scientists to make the dive.

Low-Adrenaline Alternative: If your pockets aren't that deep, a snorkeling excursion in the Bahamas should satisfy some of your curiosity – minus the major expense. Bimini, Grand Bahama, Paradise, and Andros islands all have shipwrecks right offshore; all you need to explore them are your mask and fins.

Summer camp for everyone: These family resorts bring all the fun in the sun

Tamara Gane

June 20, 2024 // By Tamara Gane

By Tamara Gane June 20, 2024

Some family resorts offer activities that feel like you're back at summer camp

Capture the magic of summer camp

You’re never too old to yearn for the summer camp experience of horseback riding, archery, swimming, crafts, and roasting s’mores underneath the stars at night.  Places like The Resort at Paws Up in Montana and Sundance Resort in Utah capture that magic with an exciting array of activities to appeal to travelers of all stripes.   Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family resort , or a place to host a multi-generational family vacation , these resorts are here to spark your sense of fun and adventure.

Guests make custom jewelry at Sundance Art Studio's silversmithing classes

Sundance Mountain Resort, Sundance, Utah

In 1969, Robert Redford purchased the land for Sundance Mountain Resort  t o create a place celebrating art, nature, and community. More than 50 years later, his vision is still strong.   The 5,000-acre Mount Timpanogos resort feels like a year-round summer camp for adults , with outdoor activities like skiing, ziplining, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and fly fishing. At Sundance Art Studio and Gallery, guests take workshops in silversmithing, pottery, soap-making, and journal-making. Before you check out, leave time for a visit to the spa and a meal in the Tree Room restaurant .

Archery is one of the many activities that make Barnsley Resort feel like a year-round summer camp

Barnsley Resort, Adairsville, Georgia

Barnsley Resort  is nestled into 3,000 acres of pristine meadows, lakes, and forests. Traditional lodge-style accommodations, standalone cottages, or entire vacation homes cater to couples, groups of friends, and multi-generational families.   Activities include ax throwing, sport clay shooting, archery, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and whiskey tasting in the evening. A golf course, a swimming pool, a spa, and restaurants specializing in locally sourced cuisine help cement Barnsley’s reputation as one of  the best destination resorts in the South.

ATV tours zoom past rivers, rock formations, and stunning views of The Resort at Paws Up

The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, Montana

Prepare to be dazzled by The Resort at Paw Up , one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the country , according to USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. Best known for glamping tents as luxurious as any hotel room ,  you won't have to choose between comfort and the great outdoors at this 37,000-acre working cattle ranch.   Activities include ATV tours, horseback riding, fly fishing, mountain biking, geocaching, go-karts, an aerial adventure park, and cow croquet (a family favorite). For an epic culinary adventure, book a treehouse or glass house in the forest of the adults-only enclave, The Green O , where a James Beard-recognized chef wows with an eight-course dinner every night.

Horseback riding in the high desert is just one activity at Brasada Ranch

Brasada Ranch, Powell Butte, Oregon

Surrounded by mountains in the high desert, Brasada Ranch enjoys pleasant weather and gorgeous views all year round. The resort offers traditional rooms, bungalows, or cabins for groups of all sizes.   Your biggest problem will be deciding how to spend your time with options, including an upscale spa, a year-round golf course, horseback riding, fishing, indoor and outdoor pools, a waterslide, a lazy river, crafts, and a kids' clubhouse. Sunsets here are especially spectacular.

The Ritz Carlton Naples' family pool features cabanas, air-conditioned bungalows, and lawn games

The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Florida

The Ritz-Carlton brand is synonymous with luxury, and The Ritz-Carlton Naples  is the perfect example. After extensive renovations following Hurricane Ian, the resort reopened in the summer of 2023. The newly imagined space includes a Vanderbilt Tower with bi-level suites, nine eateries, and the largest Ritz-Carlton club lounge outside Dubai.   Families love the Ritz Kids program, which offers "big experiences for small guests," from cooking classes to scavenger hunts. The oceanfront resort sits on a white-sand beach with cabanas, plush lounge chairs, and activities like kayaking and parasailing. Three pools cater to families, adults, or spa guests. (You'll find lawn games next to the family pool.) And if one location isn't enough, a complimentary shuttle service carries guests to the resort's sister property,  The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburon , where you'll find activities like golf, tennis, pickleball, waterslides, and a lazy river.

Kids love the family-friendly pool at Carneros Resort and Spa

Carneros Resort and Spa, Napa, California

At first glance, Napa might not seem like the obvious place for a family vacation, but Carneros Resort and Spa , a perennial  best wine country hotel  winner, appeals to kids and adults alike. Cottage-style rooms and standalone homes offer plenty of privacy for romantic getaways or families. The resort is famous for its two swimming pools: The breathtaking adults-only pool sits atop a hillside with sweeping valley vistas, while a second pool caters to kids and families.   However, the activities give Carneros Resort and Spa its summer camp vibe. Examples include  pickleball clinics , live music, wine blending, and saberage demonstrations. Family experiences include a kids club, outdoor movie nights, little green thumb garden tours, and scavenger hunts.

Family activities at Grand Geneva Resort and Spa include archery and so much more

Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Grand Geneva Resort and Spa  offers so many experiences that you can return to each season and have a different vacation every time.   Located in beautiful Lake Geneva , local activities include skiing, a climbing wall, two golf courses, disc golf, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, archery, an arcade, mini bowling, and the Timber Ridge Lodge Indoor/Outdoor Water Park, voted as one of the  best indoor water parks  in the country by 10Best readers.

Whitewater kayaking awaits guests of Adventures on the Gorge

Adventures on the Gorge, Lansing, West Virginia

Adventures on the Gorge is the ideal place to base yourself for a  New River Gorge National Park trip . Lodging options include camping, glamping, several styles of cabins, and entire vacation homes to suit a range of budgets and travel styles.   As you might expect from a resort with the word adventure in its moniker, the activities here are the real draw. In addition to exploring the national park, options include white water rafting, kayaking, ziplining, rock climbing, fishing, paintball, obstacle courses, and jetboat tours.

Guests enjoy lawn games on the beach at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort

Edgewood Tahoe Resort, Stateline, Nevada

The  Edgewood Tahoe Resort  is one of the only resorts on the shores of  Lake Tahoe. It boasts a private beach, lawn games, and Adirondack chairs to soak in the views. The resort is also  home to one of the best public golf courses in the country , which hosts the popular American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament every July.   Other summer camp experiences include nightly s’mores, movies on the lawn, crafts, astronomy tours, plus ice skating and a ski shuttle in winter. There's also a year-round heated outdoor swimming pool, a spa, and luxury Mastercraft boat rentals, so you can embrace the best of lake life .

Riding horseback through cactus on Tanque Verde Ranch is a dude ranch dream

Tanque Verde Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Live life like a character from "Yellowstone" on this Arizona dude ranch . Activities at Tanque Verde Ranch include horseback riding, guided hikes, swimming, yoga, fishing, spa treatments, and kids' day camps and overnight camps.   Opt for the all-inclusive package to get the most bang for your buck. The package includes lodging, three daily meals, horseback riding, nature programs, supervised kids activities, and more.

Wilderness Survival Training

CNN interviews Erik about the Frien Manhunt

On CNN's "Newsroom," Brooke Baldwin interviewed Erik Kulick live for his thoughts regarding Eric Frein's gear and supplies after he was finally captured by law enforcement for shooting two Pennsylvania State Troopers and spending forty-eight days on the run in the wilderness of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Cover photo of Backpacker Magazine Sept 2013 Edition

Backpacker puts together an expert panel to solve various problems

As part of its "Instant Upgrades" series, Backpacker consults Erik about how to best use land navigation skills to find potential water sources in late Summer and early Autumn.

A Pennsylvania State Trooper walks in a wooded area near Route 447 in Price Township on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, near Canadensis, Pa., during a massive search for suspected killer Eric Frein

Erik talks with Associated Press about Frein's chances of survival

"When you teach a person to survive, you're teaching them a way to be found. There's a difference between surviving and needing to evade, and that really handcuffs you,' said Erik Kulick, founder of True North Wilderness Survival School in Western Pennsylvania."

True North rated one of the Top 10 survival schools in the U.S.

The magazine, Survivor's Edge, "Before you grab your bug-out bag and head for the for the hills, stop and think: Can I survive three days in the woods with no gear or food? Here are 10 highly rated schools that will teach you what you need to know to survive and live off the land."

Erik takes Pittsburgh's David Highfield out for a survival Adventure

"You’ve probably seen reality TV shows such as "Survivor" or "Naked and Afraid," where people have to use their wits to survive in the wild. But, what’s it like in real life? It turns out, there’s a school in our area that teaches people how to survive in the wilderness."

List of Classes and Schedule

Current class schedule.

  • Ridge Runner
  • Intro to BackPacking

The Ridge Runner class is designed for trail runners, mountain bikers, hunters, or anyone that spends time in the woods! The skills we teach can be used by anyone in a wilderness survival situation. All gear is provided for successful completion of the class. Click the Ridge Runner button for more info.

The CoreFour class will cover the basics of fire, shelter, food and water. In this two day class everything you need for the class (except meals & camping gear) will be provided, but feel free to bring your own fixed blade knife for use in the class. The class will focus on carrying the right gear with you whenever you head into the woods and how to use it. The goal is not to teach you to go into the woods with nothing and survive, but rather why you don't go into the woods with nothing if you want to survive! The Navigator basic navigation class is also part of the CoreFour curriculum. Click the CoreFour button for more info.

The Intro to BackPacking class is a one day class for anyone that has ever wanted to leave the campsite behind and do some "wild" camping! We'll look at backpacking gear, shelter options, and even cover some basic survival skills, like fire making. We"ll have lots of different gear on hand for you to see up close and checkout before deciding what you might want to carry. Click the Intro to BackPacking button for more info.

The Bushwacker class is a two day and one night backpacking trip. We'll hike on an established trail, but head off-trail to camp. After we find a campsite, we'll cover fire, water, navigation, and whatever else comes up. This will not be a survival class but more of an intro to backpacking. We'll also meet two weeks prior to the class to go over gear and any questions you might have. This is not mandatory, but highly recommended. Click the BushWacker button for more info.

The DayHiker class will focus on carrying the right gear with you whenever you head into the woods and how to use it. The goal of this one day class is to teach you what to carry and how to use it when you are not planning to spend the night in the woods. If you are prepared for the unexpected, nothing is ever unexpected! Click the DayHiker button for more info.

The Navigator class is a basic navigation class. In this four hour class we'll go over the parts of your compass, basic map reading, finding your way using a compass and some helpful tips and tricks for finding your way out of the woods. This is NOT an in-depth navigation course. This is only a beginner level class, that will hopefully help you find your way back if lost in the woods. The Navigator class is also part of the two day CoreFour class. Click the Navigator button for more info.

The Caveman class will be a 1/2 day class covering nothing but primitive fire. We'll learn about flint & steel, bowdrill, solar ignition (weather permitting) and general fire making techniques.

Russia Summons the American Ambassador over a Deadly Attack that Moscow Says Used US-Made Missiles

live fire testing at White Sands Missile Range

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the American ambassador on Monday to protest what it says was the use of U.S.-made advanced missiles in a Ukrainian attack on Russian-annexed Crimea that reportedly killed four people and wounded more than 150.

Washington “has effectively become a party” to the war on Ukraine’s side, the ministry said in a statement, adding, “Retaliatory measures will certainly follow.” It did not elaborate.

There was no immediate comment from U.S. or Ukrainian officials. The Associated Press could not independently verify Russia's claims about the missiles used.

Kyiv’s forces have relied heavily on Western-supplied weaponry since Russia’s invasion more than three years ago. The military aid has been crucial in allowing Ukraine to hold the Kremlin’s army at bay, with few major changes along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line in eastern and southern Ukraine for many months.

Some Western countries have hesitated over providing more — and more sophisticated — help for Kyiv’s army because of concerns about potentially provoking the Kremlin. But as Ukraine has at times struggled to hold the line against Russia’s bigger and better-equipped military, Western leaders have gradually relented and granted more support.

In the latest key development, the Pentagon said last week that Ukraine’s military is being allowed to use longer-range missiles provided by the U.S. to strike targets inside Russia if it is acting in self-defense. Since the outset of the war, the U.S. had maintained a policy of not allowing Ukraine to use the weapons it provided to hit targets on Russian soil for fear of further escalating the conflict.

Crimea, which Russian annexed from Ukraine in 2014 in a move that most of the world rejected as unlawful, long had been declared a fair target for Ukraine by its Western allies.

Russian authorities said that the dead in Sunday’s attack included two children who were hit by falling debris from Ukrainian missiles that were shot down over a coastal area in Sevastopol, a port city in Crimea. It said cluster munitions , which critics say harm more civilians than combatants, were also used.

Russia said the missiles were U.S.-made ATACMS , a long-range, guided missile. It summoned U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy to the Foreign Ministry.

The targeting and “mission input” for such missile attacks is carried out by U.S. military experts, the ministry statement alleged, saying the United States bears “equal responsibility for this outrage” with the Ukrainian authorities.

It went on to say that “allowing strikes deep inside the Russian territory will not be left unanswered.”

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry on Monday reported striking a “major logistical hub” of the Ukrainian military that held Western-supplied missiles and other weapons.

It said the strike was carried out by warplanes, drones, ground-launched missiles and artillery. The ministry didn’t name its location.

Russia’s fighters are waging bloody battles in Ukraine’s east to add to its captured territory.

Moscow supports this war effort with soldiers from outside the regular army, including some from a training camp in Chechnya.

Some join for the money, others to escape everyday drudgery, and some fight out of patriotism. But there are tearful goodbyes.

Soldiers trained in Chechnya range from battle tested mercenaries to raw recruits without combat experience.

Mayhem awaits them, as evident in the devastation of the city of Bakhmut.

Inside the Chechen Units Helping to Fight Russia’s War

Photographs by Nanna Heitmann

Text by Neil MacFarquhar

Nanna Heitmann spent time observing Russian troops training in Chechnya, then later traveled to Bakhmut, Ukraine. Neil MacFarquhar reported from New York.

A hulking military transport plane roared onto the tarmac at the main airfield in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic in southeastern Russia, and a group of 120 volunteer fighters heading for Ukraine clambered aboard.

Dressed in camouflage, the newly minted troops had just completed at least 10 days of training in Gudermes, near Grozny, at the Special Forces University, which accepts men from across Russia for general military instruction.

Some of the trainees lacked any combat experience. Others were veterans returning to Ukraine for their second or third tour — including former mercenaries from the Wagner militia, disbanded in 2023 after a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin.

Six soldiers kneeling on cardboard to pray. They are all dressed in camouflage.

Some Wagner fighters, chafing at the idea of working for the Russian Defense Ministry, instead transferred whole units to the Chechen-trained forces, known as Akhmat battalions, intended in part to absorb fighters from outside the Russian Army. Wagner veterans were often first recruited from prison, including a lean man with a gold front tooth, identified only by his military call sign, “Jedi,” because of the potential for retribution.

“Go for your Fatherland? What kind of Fatherland? It kept me in prison all my life,” said Jedi, 39, a construction laborer who was convicted of robbery and fraud. In and out of jail since 14, he had six months left on a six-year sentence when he signed up.

“The volunteers go for the money,” he said. “I have yet to meet anyone here for the ideology.” He also wanted a clean slate, he said.

Fat signing bonuses plus payments of about $2,000 per month, at least double the average wage in Russia, have spurred recruitment.

The training near Grozny highlights the evolution of ethnic loyalties that is manifest in this war. Some of those now training there were last in Chechnya as young conscripts for the Russian Army, fighting against Chechens who were part of the separatist movement.

The participation of some Chechens represents another inversion of history: After hundreds of years of enmity with Russia, Chechens were deploying to Ukraine to fight Moscow’s war.

The separatist movement of the 1990s culminated in two brutal wars against Moscow that lasted intermittently for over a decade. The city of Grozny was flattened, and tens of thousands of Chechens died.

photo

Chechnya is ruled by the strongman Ramzan Kadyrov. Portraits of him and his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, can be seen all over Grozny.

Grozny, the capital, was entirely rebuilt after the Russian military flattened it during the Chechen wars.

The history of those wars is not commemorated the way other conflicts are, such as World War II.

A downtown photo exhibit chronicles both the devastation and reconstruction of the city.

Few traces of Grozny’s destruction remain. Today, new mosques and luxury boutiques stand amid the skyscrapers.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the authoritarian leader of Chechnya, has taken an aggressive stance toward Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Chechen forces have claimed an instrumental role in some key battles, including the siege of Mariupol early in the war.

But Mr. Kadyrov has faced accusations that he has refrained from sending his fighters full-bore into the fight, with Chechens dying in fewer numbers than soldiers from other minority areas. Sparing his fighters keeps intact his private militia, the core of the security forces that ensure his rule in Chechnya.

Instead, Mr. Kadyrov has tried to underscore his loyalty to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by pouring resources into this military training center. The regimen consists of live fire exercises with artillery, some mining and demining instruction and first aid.

The various Akhmat battalions were named, like so much in Chechnya, after Mr. Kadyrov’s father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who switched sides to join Moscow in the separatist struggle and was then assassinated in 2004.

Russia has recruited troops for its war effort wherever it could find them, seeking to minimize the need for a draft. In 2022, it lifted an almost blanket ban on Chechens serving in the Russian military, fallout from the separatist movement.

Of the group being dispatched to Ukraine last fall from the tarmac in Grozny, many were in their 30s and 40s, and fewer than 10 were Chechens. Despite Jedi’s claims, money is not the sole motivation.

Some fled troubled domestic lives. Others wanted to escape daily drudgery. Some, of course, profess to be fighting out of patriotism. Many of the men agreed to talk on the condition that they be identified by only their first names or military call signs for fear of retribution.

Anatoly, 24, was among 10 men who volunteered together from a small farming village high in the mountains in the picturesque, south-central Altai region. “My father forced me to shovel snow, to work, to clear out the dung from the cows,” he said. “I ran away from this work to do something else. Every year is the same.” He admitted that the money was an incentive, too.

Another rural worker, a 45-year-old shepherd who uses the call sign “Masyanya,” traveled about 4,500 kilometers from the Republic of Khakassia for the training. “I’m going to defend my motherland, so the war doesn’t come here,” he said.

The contract with the Akhmat battalion lasts only four months, a big incentive when compared with the open-ended deployments for regular soldiers.

Last fall, Mr. Kadyrov formed a new unit, the Sheikh Mansour battalion, named after an 18th-century imam who fought against the Russian Empire. The soldiers are all Chechens or from the small, neighboring republics in the mountainous Caucasus region, and are mostly in their 20s. Chechens fighting for Ukraine against Russia named their battalion after Sheikh Mansour first, and now Mr. Kadyrov is trying to reclaim the name.

Turpal, 20, was working as a security guard for a large supermarket chain in Moscow when he got permission from his father to sign up for the new unit, saying that he wanted to fight against “those devils who are in Ukraine who want to bring their perverted ideas here.”

As he left to go back to the training center after a weekend visiting his parents, he hugged his mother and shook hands with his father. “Russia has been fighting for all its existence,” said Mayrali, Turpal’s father. “You can’t beat it. It is better for Chechnya to be with Russia than to be against Russia.”

Wagner veterans serve in the Sheikh Mansour battalion, too. A 35-year-old fighter who uses the call sign “Dikiy,” or “Wild,” said that he had served 18 months of a nearly 10-year sentence for murder when he signed up. He fought in Ukraine for 11 months, was wounded three times and still gets fierce headaches.

Back in Chechnya, he found the idea of working for $200 per month demoralizing, so he returned to the war. “I don’t know how to do anything else,” he said.

The Akhmat troops are better equipped than the regular army; unlike some regular Russian soldiers, they do not have to buy their own basic equipment.

Jedi said that when he first deployed with Wagner in Ukraine, some young men in the Russian Army came running up begging for supplies, for fuel and for bread. “In Akhmat, I don’t even wash my socks. I wear them, throw them away, wear them,” he said. “The same applies to underwear and bed linen. We have everything.”

Moscow subsidizes an estimated 80 percent of Chechnya’s budget, though it is unclear how much goes to military training.

At the airfield, before the battalion departed, a senior officer lined up the new soldiers to wish them good luck. “Are the fighters ready?” he shouted. “Yes sir,” they barked in unison, followed by the Muslim expression “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great!” plus the Chechen war cry, “Akhmat Sila!” or “Akhmat rules!”

Once they arrived in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, some of the men were assigned to maintain Russian control over Bakhmut, now an abandoned husk of a city after months of fierce fighting.

The streets are deserted, especially during the day, when Ukrainian drones roam overhead, hunting for targets. On foggy days, fighters can sometimes be glimpsed walking through the rubble.

Traffic rumbles to life at night, when the wounded from battles scattered around the Bakhmut region are evacuated. The roads are littered with burned cars and ambulances.

While the war grinds relentlessly above ground, the roar of artillery and exploding shells does not penetrate far beneath the surface, where the Akhmat forces have taken over a field hospital first set up by Wagner.

The Bakhmut region was once famous for its sparkling wine, and the hospital operates in the maze of underground tunnels where tens of thousands of bottles remain stored along the walls. (The prohibition on drinking it by both Wagner and Akhmat has been largely respected.) Once a tourist attraction, the old décor is still intact; dusty plaster statues of ancient gods loom over the wounded.

The caves are wide enough to accommodate at least two vans abreast, and several times a day, vehicles ferrying the wounded and the dead navigate the darkened, fog-shrouded labyrinth. Soldiers leap from the vehicles and quickly carry their often groaning comrades on stretchers to the makeshift stabilization point.

In Bakhmut, wounded Russian soldiers are treated at an underground hospital.

Though Russian forces captured the city last year, fighting in the vicinity remains fierce.

Medical personnel operate in rooms set up in a warren of tunnels that once served as a wine cellar.

The wounded are ferried on stretchers day and night as explosions boom in the distance.

Wounded soldiers wait to get treated at the underground hospital.

One of the surgeons, Bulya, 34, has worked for Wagner, mostly in Africa, since 2017. On trips to Moscow, he said, people there reacted to seeing him in his fatigues like “dirt under your fingernails,” but in Chechnya, he found more respect.

As losses pile up, Bulya said that he was eager for the Russian Army to make it to Kyiv. “I don’t need their negotiations,” he said using an expletive. “I hope that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin will do that, that we will go to the end. We will get there.”

Insider Today

Armed with exploding naval drones and long-range missiles, Ukraine has managed to push Russia's Black Sea Fleet away from its long-held headquarters in the occupied Crimean Peninsula to other bases far away.

A series of high-profile Ukrainian attacks on the port of Sevastopol and Russian warships last year triggered the withdrawal of Russian warships to bases in the port cities of Feodosia, on the other side of Crimea, and Novorossiysk, in Russia, as Moscow sought better protection for its naval assets.

Newly released satellite imagery captured by BlackSky, a company that provides space-based real-time intelligence, and obtained by Business Insider reveals the dispersal of the Black Sea Fleet — one of Ukraine's defining successes of the war. Kyiv, lacking a proper navy of its own , has inflicted shocking losses on Russian warships and, in the process, opened up a crucial maritime corridor to help support its economy.

Ukraine has relied on its fleet of homemade naval drones and missiles to sink, destroy, or damage at least 24 Russian vessels in the Black Sea, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said last week.

These attacks span the entirety of the war , but the exodus of the Black Sea Fleet didn't really kick into gear until September. That month, Ukraine carried out two separate attacks on Sevastopol using Western-made cruise missiles to bombard a key shipyard and the fleet's headquarters .

The British Defense Ministry said in October that the increasing threats to Sevastopol — as evidenced by the earlier strikes on the shipyard and headquarters — were likely forcing Moscow to disperse its naval operations across the Black Sea and away from Crimea's battered western coast.

BlackSky said it generated tens of thousands of automated detections of military vessels between January 2022 and April 2024, giving it insight into the scale of the Russian withdrawal.

In the months after the Sevastopol strikes, BlackSky found that there was an 18% drop in detections in the port.

Meanwhile, it recorded a 23% increase in detections in Feodosia and a 22% increase in detections in Novorossiysk — just shy of 100 miles and just over 200 miles away from Sevastopol, respectively. These figures underscore a noteworthy departure away from western Crimea to other locations that may be harder for Ukrainian missiles and drones to reach.

A series of satellite images captured in the months before and after the damaging Sevastopol strikes further highlights the Black Sea Fleet's dwindling presence at the city's port, as warships were distributed across the region to Feodosia and Novorossiysk.

BlackSky also said it observed an increase in apparent maritime security measures at the entrances to the ports where Russian vessels were docked, including at Sevastopol despite the decrease in naval activity there. Western intelligence and analysts have identified these defenses as netting, floating booms, and moored barges.

With a diminished presence of Russian warships around Sevastopol and Crimea's western coast, Ukraine in recent weeks has resorted to attacks on smaller targets like patrol vessels and tugboats in a bid to continue inflicting naval losses on Moscow.

The Black Sea fight has been a bright spot for Ukraine amid the slow-moving campaign on the ground. Russia has been unable to consistently defend against this innovative and asymmetric style of warfare, and officials in Kyiv have vowed to press on with this highly effective campaign of missile and naval-drone attacks.

A general in the Security Service of Ukraine, which has carried out naval-drone attacks on Russian warships and infrastructure, previously told BI that Kyiv was not only driving Moscow's naval assets away but also destroying them in the process — highlighting some of the strategic benefits of the campaign.

"We managed to unblock the grain corridor and suppress the activity of Russian missile launchers firing from the sea at the territory of Ukraine," Brig. Gen. Ivan Lukashevych said, adding: "Forcing the enemy to flee from the Black Sea was the goal we sought, and it was achieved."
