Letter of introduction from 2024 CAST Director

Hello Corrales Society of Artists members, I hope everyone’s doing well! I’d like to introduce myself to all of you. I’m Beth Waldron Yuhas, a painter and portrait photographer in Corrales, and the current VP of the CSA. I wear a few other hats as well, but those are the important ones here. Ken Duckert is taking a much deserved rest from being CAST director and he has passed the torch to me for 2024. He’s sticking around as a consultant, thankfully, and he has given Jenn and I a lot of information to get us going. May 4th & 5th seems like forever from now, but time moves quickly. Behind the scenes we’ve been working on all of the moving pieces that need to fit into place for a successful tour. We’re just about done assembling the team to lead volunteers for the work leading up to the tour. As you know, we rely on our membership volunteering to make the studio tour a success every year. Some of you are resuming management roles you’ve taken on previously. A couple of positions opened up as people who have worked hard for a long time wanted to allow new people the chance to step in. We're so thankful for everyone taking these roles on. Our membership has been expanding as well so I’m excited to see new faces in the committees along with members who have already been making the tour run smoothly for years. For now, I just want to introduce myself virtually to those who haven’t met me and get the 2024 studio tour on everyone’s mind as applications for 2024 will be opening December 1st, which isn’t that far away. Find Great Art at the Corrales Art Studio Tour

Returning to its original spring dates, one of the most anticipated art studio tours in New Mexico, the 25th Annual Corrales Art Studio Tour will be held, for one weekend only, May 6 & 7, 2023.  Ninety-three artists and over fifty student artists from two Corrales elementary schools will show their work at thirty-eight venues including artist homes and studios, four local galleries and select local businesses.  CAST Preview Gallery opens May 5.

Corrales Art Studio Tour attendees will find a wide selection of fine art and beautifully crafted works for every taste and budget. Art in contemporary to representational and abstract styles in a variety of media including watercolors, oils, acrylics, photography and prints as well as works in clay, fiber, glass and metal will delight the senses at every stop.

“The Corrales Studio Tour is the perfect opportunity to connect with local artists, whether you’re a collector, art lover or simply looking for a fun weekend,” said Jenn Noel, Corrales artist and Corrales Society of Artists board president. “Come visit local galleries, studios, artists to get a peek into their creative process. With 93 talented artists participating in the tour this year, there is sure to be something you will love.”

This year’s featured art image is an acrylic painting by artist L. BaLoMbiNi titled “Auntie.”   “It’s always a thrill to have your artwork selected for publication; even more so when a jury of your peers selects your imagery to represent a group of over 90 artists and galleries for the 25th Annual Corrales Art Studio Tour,” BaLoMbiNi mused. “My painting ‘Auntie’ is a reflection of women in our families, now gone, whose joy, cooking, and stories are present in our own lives – and we thank them.”

Visitors to the Village of Corrales will find plenty of restaurants and several breweries plus out-of-town visitors can choose from several bed and breakfast establishments and vacation rentals.

View a sample of work by each participating artist at the Preview Gallery in the Old San Ysidro Church, 966 Old Church Road in Corrales, NM 87048. The Preview Gallery is open Friday, May 5 from 1 _ 4 p.m. and during tour hours: Saturday and Sunday, May 6 & 7, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Maps and catalogs will be available online , outside the Frontier Mart at the south end of Corrales, the Preview Gallery at Old San Ysidro Church, and various local sponsors, galleries, wineries, and art studios throughout the village.

Just in time for spring, a brand new crop of baby garden gremlins have hatched. Guaranteed to cause all manner of mischief in your garden!

Their arrival also marks that other spring event, the Corrales Art Studio Tour . Once again Adobe Dragon Design studio will be participating. That’s us, lucky number 32 on the tour.

As always, much of our art will be showcased in our garden and will feature the usual assortment of “fun art.” Garden gremlins, giant insects, people-eating plants and Pat’s windchimes (always a popular item). This year our muses were working overtime and we’ve got loads of new creations.

Corrales Art Studio Tour returns Aug. 27 and Aug. 28

Aug. 24—This weekend, the Village of Corrales returns one of the most anticipated art and studio tours in New Mexico with the 24th Annual Corrales Art Studio Tour (CAST) on Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday Aug. 28.

"Raven and Red Chiles," an acrylic painting by local artist Victoria Mauldin, is the featured art image for this year's tour.

Mauldin is one of over 80 artists coming together with 50 elementary school student artists to showcase their art.

"The local art scene is fabulous and that was a really important factor in buying this house that we bought when we were looking for a move," Mauldin said. "I have been to various places in New Mexico that had wonderful studio tours and I have been blessed to live in places that are just really strongly supportive of the art community."

In addition to the artist tour, the event will also have work in the Preview Gallery at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church, 966 Old Church Road, which opens on Friday, Aug. 26.

"Some of my work comes about in the middle of the night, actually and I am a big raven fan," Mauldin said. "Once I painted my first raven, I fell in love with them and I have learned a lot more about them since then."

For Mauldin, making this piece was inevitable.

"So it just seemed totally appropriate to put red chiles or chiles of any kind actually," Mauldin said. "It just came about kind of naturally, because those are two things that are very much a part of New Mexico."

"What attracted me is that they are really bright creatures and that they are family-oriented," Mauldin said. "They take care of one another and their friends, and I just admire them because I think they have a connection to each other in the world."

In terms of art, imaginative realism is Mauldin's forte.

"But what I love about imaginative realism is that it goes beyond just what we can usually see in the in the world around us," Mauldin said. "It really connects things and put things together in a way that hopefully makes the viewer stop and look at it and go 'Wow, that's very interesting.' "

Tour visitors will notice a plethora of fine art in a multitude of ways. Viewers will see media including watercolors, oils and photography, along with works in clay, glass and other materials to delight the crowd at every turn.

Set among ancient cottonwoods along the Rio Grande, yet close to the city of Albuquerque, the village of Corrales has for generations attracted artists with its deep history and quiet, semirural atmosphere. So many artists, in fact, that the annual Corrales Art Studio Tour has become one of the largest studio tours in the Southwest. This year’s event, held August 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, features more than 80 fine artists working in a spectrum of media, genres, and styles. To make the experience more manageable and enjoyable, the tour is consolidated into 35 studios—some with as many as five artists showing in one space—plus four galleries.

The weekend includes a tribute to the late artist Pauline Eaton, who’s credited with organizing the first tour in 1998. In 2007 she founded the Corrales Society of Artists, which today counts more than 130 members. Eaton died last year at age 87. Her large, colorful watercolors express her belief that “the spiritual and the manifest are totally entwined,” notes society president and photographer Ken Duckert. A number of Eaton’s paintings are on view at the tour’s Preview Gallery, located in the historic San Isidro church building. A tour preview takes place at the gallery on Friday, August 26, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Preview Gallery is also the site of another special event: an exhibition and sale of matted and framed artworks by 50 children from two local schools. Many of the young artists attend a reception on Thursday, August 25, at 6 p.m.

Located in the heart of town, Corrales Fine Arts shows the work of gallery co-owners Barbara Clark and Susana Erling, both of whom have lived in Corrales since the mid-1990s. Erling creates graceful female figures in light cement over wire mesh forms and finishes them with colorful painted glazes. Clark is a plein-air painter whose favorite subjects include Corrales itself and the red-rock landscape of Georgia O’Keeffe country near Abiquiu, NM. Along with small works painted on location, she chooses some scenes to depict on larger canvases in her studio. One such piece, CHAMA SINGING, depicts an iconic bend in northern New Mexico’s Chama River.

Sculptor Chris Turri’s northside Corrales studio is set up as a gallery space for the tour, featuring his work along with sculptures and paintings by Barbara Burzillo, hand-painted designs on silk by Sue Orchant, and photography by Kevin Black. Turri scours the backroads of northern New Mexico for old cars from the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, whose heavy steel hoods and doors provide the basis for his sculpture. Inspired by petroglyphs and other Native symbolism, the artist hand-cuts the metal in freehand designs.
