How does the Antwerp City Pass work?

Purchase your City Pass for Antwerp online through this website. You will receive a confirmation email with a voucher to be exchanged at the information desk of the Antwerp Tourism Office (Antwerpen Toerisme) at the Central Station or the Grote Markt (the central Square in the city centre). The Antwerp City Pass is validated at your first visit to a museum or church. The moment the first voucher is exchanged, your 24, 48 or 72 hours start running. That’s why you must fill in at the back of your card the date you start using your card.

No matter how much I love traveling, my home always has a special place in my heart. I’m originally from Limburg, but I’ve now lived in Antwerp for almost ten years. 

Antwerp is the fashion city of Belgium, and it’s a bustling city full of culture, architecture, and delicious food. I’ve put together an Antwerp travel guide full of the top spots to visit and the best things to do from a local’s perspective.

25 Best Places to visit in Antwerp: Travel Guide

Before I share all of the amazing things to do in Antwerp, here are some planning tips to help prepare for your trip!

Antwerp is located in Belgium , in western Europe. It lies in the Dutch-speaking region of the country, called Flemish. 

It is a port city and is situated on Belgium’s River Scheldt. Antwerp is perfect for culture and nature lovers alike, its history dates back to the Middle Ages, and thanks to its parks and green spaces you can enjoy short hikes and strolls in and around the city!

When is the best time to visit Antwerp? 

The best time to visit Antwerp is during spring or summer – so ideally any time between March and September. Although it will be a little busier, there’s less chance of rain so you can fully enjoy the city without worrying about getting soaked. 

If you want to avoid crowds, I would recommend visiting Antwerp in early January or February. Although this is the coldest time of year, there are plenty of Christmas decorations up and everything looks extra festive. Just make sure to bundle up!

How to move around in Antwerp?

To get into Antwerp, you can take a taxi from our national airport in Zaventem, which will cost around €60. Alternatively, there is also a train station in the airport.

It takes around half an hour to get the train from Brussels to Antwerp – trains leave around every 20 minutes. 

If you want a more low-cost option, the bus is the cheapest form of transport into the city and takes around 40 minutes.

Once you’re in Antwerp, it’s best to explore by bike or on foot. You can rent a bike at A-Velo, they offer day or week passes, and you can ride between the different Velo stations during your rental. Check their website online for more information about renting a bike.

The Botanical Garden

Visit the botanical garden and the conservatory.

The Antwerp Botanical Garden is home to a gorgeous green space that spans three hectares and is home to over 10,000 plants from all over the world!

Middelheim Park 

I love Middelheim Park and I think that it’s one of the best places to visit in Antwerp. It’s a gorgeous, wooded park – originally opened in 1939 – and features sculptures by famous artists such as Rodin and Picasso.

Stroll along former castle grounds of Vogelzoan, Middelheim, and Den Brandt.

The Scheldt

Antwerp is a city by the water, so ensure you enjoy a picnic along the Scheldt in summer during your stay. Take a picnic blanket and some drinks and enjoy a beautiful sunset over the water.

The Cathedral of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic church in Antwerp. It is gorgeous and it has played a pivotal role in our history.

Het Steen is basically a medieval castle right in the city center! It was originally built in 1128 and has been used as a prison for many centuries. In fact, it’s one of the oldest structures that remain standing in Antwerp today. 

Architecture lovers can visit the well-known ‘t Steen or the Palace of Justice.

Antwerp’s city hall

Antwerp’s city hall — located on the riverfront – is a great example of northern Gothic architecture. It was originally built in 1533 and features a beautiful, red facade with intricate details.

Over time though, it has been destroyed and rebuilt quite a few times due to fires.

Pay a visit to the Havenhuis, a design of the late world-famous architect Zaha Hadid.

Visit Antwerp’s most hidden (but most beautiful) alley.

More things to do in Antwerp Belgium 

There are plenty of ways to fill your days in Antwerp, from beautiful views to pieces of history. 

On the other side of the water (on the left bank), you’ll find the most beautiful view of the city. You can get there through the pedestrian tunnel at Sint-Jansvliet. 

Want to escape the bustle of the city? Pay a visit to the ‘beach’ of Sint Anneke . The Sint-Anna tunnel is also worth checking out, as it truly is a hidden pearl in our diamond city. It opened in 1933 and the tunnel has managed to retain its authenticity until now.

For theater performances, visit the Bourla or enjoy a wonderful performance of the classical ballet in the Stadsschouwburg. The best concerts take place in the ‘Sportpaleis’, but if you prefer something more intimate, go to Trix or Middelheim. Make sure you plan and book your tickets well in advance to avoid missing out!

Walking Trails and Scenic City Strolls 

Antwerp has both the modern amenities and urban history for the city explorer, and more – there is water, and amazing nature. If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, then go on a stroll or a ride through these trails in Antwerp, 

Scheldenland

The Scheldt flows through the city from south to north and has always played an important role in the history of Antwerp. The city originated along the Scheldt and owes much of its richest tales to the river. It has an important economic function but also plays a major role in local nature and life. 

The river and the green areas connected to it together form the Scheldeland. This landscape is the habitat of many special animal and plant species and belongs almost entirely to the Natura 2000 network, a European network of protected nature reserves.

Groene Bedding

A green ribbon runs around the Antwerp core city. It is largely enclosed by the surrounding infrastructures. Although the roads take up a lot of space, there is still room for quite a bit of open green space. 

In the south, it is still fairly robust, but the further north you go, the more fragmented it becomes. At the Lobroekdok, the Green Ribbon Bedding is completely absorbed into the building fabric. You can find more information about the walking area here.

Hoboken Polder 

My favorite place to go hiking is without a doubt the Hoboken Polder area, which is just outside the city. In the Hoboken Polder, there are several nice walks along indicated pathways. These walks give a wide impression of this beautiful nature reserve and cover approximately 9 km of walking. 

Along the way, you walk among cows and pass ponds where you can admire different bird species. You can find the map here . 

Where to eat in Antwerp? The Best Restaurants and Markets 

Because of the mix of cultures, you can find the best food to suit everyone’s taste buds in Antwerp. There’s absolutely anything, from classics such as veal stew or steak tartare served with French fries to several hipster vegan options.

When in Belgium, you simply need to try our french fries (although they should be called Belgian fries…as we Belgians invented them!). We call them ‘frietjes’ and every Belgian family eats them monthly – or even weekly. 

Antwerp’s most famous spot to eat them is Number 1, which is just around the corner from the City Hall in the historic city center. Since 1980, this place has been open day and night, and it’s a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. Want something even more special? 

World-famous chef Sergio Herman opened the Frites Atelier a couple of years ago – here you can eat delicious luxury french fries (for a slightly higher price).

Don’t forget to taste our delicious Belgian chocolate – Neuhaus is my personal favorite. They also have beautiful gift boxes as the perfect souvenir!

Visit the market on the Theaterplein on Saturday where you can eat hand-made cheese croquettes (look for the lighting tower stand), along with yummy Moroccan pizzas or fresh oysters.

My personal favorite spots to eat in Antwerp include:

• De Arme Duivel – Head here for some Belgian classic dishes. Reservation is a must. They also do takeaway (available through the app Deliveroo). The address is Armeduivelstraat 1, 2000 Antwerpen.
• Varelli – Find delicious Greek food here – every dish on the menu is a delight!  
• Graanmarkt 13 – This restaurant is built around seasonal vegetables, and they also have a nice shop with clothes and design articles. Ask for a table on their splendid terrace.
• Het Gerecht – A culinary experience with only fresh homemade products in the perfect setting.
• The Jane – Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience – booking well in advance is a must!
• Het Gebaar – World-famous pastry chef Roger Van Damme will treat you to several magical desserts.
• Yust – The young Belgian chef Laurens Jasperse makes sharing dishes very hard! The menu consists of only fresh ingredients, adapted to every season and inspired by every corner of the culinary world.
• Nathan – Restaurant Nathan rapidly rose to the top of the Belgian food scene with a Michelin star, which was more than deserved. The young couple serves the most delicious menus at affordable prices. Go for lunch and be blown away!

Where to find the best coffee in antwerp .

More of a coffee fanatic than a foodie? There are so many incredible coffee places in Antwerp, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

• Tinsel – Tinsel is my favorite coffee bar by far in Antwerp. As they say themselves: ‘Tinsel is a small place with a big heart. Serving solely seasonal and homemade dishes, we strive to offer simple yet delicious food. No muss, no fuss’. Breakfast or brunch is worth a try as well. 
• Caffènation – This is my go-to for a coffee on the go! 
• Normo – At Normo, coziness comes first. They also sell their own pastries, coffee beans, and tea. 
• Escobar – Escobar lies in a side ally of the Meir. It’s the ideal stop between shops, where you can enjoy a coffee or a nice lunch on their big fun terrace. 
• Bar Paniek – I don’t really recommend this for the coffee, but more to enjoy the beautiful view over the water. 

Going out in Antwerp

Many visitors flock to Antwerp every year for the world-famous Tomorrowland festival. Is the festival really worth a trip around the world? The short answer is an absolute yes. I’ve now enjoyed ten years there as a visitor myself, and I must say it’s simply a phenomenal festival that will blow you away. 

Not just because of the music, but also because of the breath-taking details like the podium constructions, structures, and much more. Tomorrowland is truly like a fairytale.

Where is Antwerp, Belgium?

Antwerp is the largest city in Belgium, at 78.96 square miles, and the capital of Antwerp Province in the Flemish Region. Antwerp Province is the northernmost province in the Flemish Region (Flanders) and Belgium. The city has a population of around 520,000 and is Belgium’s most populous city center. The greater metropolitan population is approximately 1,200,000, making it the second-largest urban region after Brussels.

Antwerp is situated on the River Scheldt and is linked to the North Sea by the river’s Westerschelde estuary. The River Schelde, the Meuse, and the Rhine rivers form the largest estuary in Western Europe. The city is about 25 mi north of Brussels and approximately 9 mi south of the Dutch border.

The Port of Antwerp is the second-largest seaport in Europe and one of the world’s most respected harbors. The city’s harbor installations ballooned after World War II, and as a result, it thrived from that expansion. Initially, the growth occurred only on the right bank of the River Schelde, but in the 1970s, development also began on the left bank.

Archeological excavations have shown that Antwerp was inhabited as far back s the Gallo-Roman period in the 2nd or 3rd century A.D. The city appears to have risen around two settlements: the ‘Antwerp’ (alluvial mound) from which it gets its name, and Caloes, about a 1/4 mile further south.

The city experienced an economic boom in the 12th century when the nearby port of Bruges started filling up with silt. By the first half of the 14th century. Its reputation, primarily based on its seaport and wool market, made Antwerp the most important trading and financial center in Western Europe.

1356 Antwerp, originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, was annexed to the County of Flanders. As a result, Antwerp lost much of its status, and Bruges gained the advantage. Only fifty years later, the economic and political tides turned once again as the Golden Age unfolded. Antwerp became a world-renowned metropolis, described at the time as ‘the loveliest city in the world.’

The river, at its core

During the late 16th century, the River Scheldt was closed due to struggles between the Protestant North and the Catholic South (Spain). This was an economic disaster for Antwerp. But somehow, this resilient city continued to prosper in the 17th century due to painters like Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jordaens, and Teniers, printers such as Plantin and Moretus, and the famous Antwerp harpsichord builders.

However, with the river closed off from 1650 until the 19th century, Antwerp experienced a significant decline. As a result of Napoleon’s fall at Waterloo (1815), Antwerp entered a short-lived period of prosperity. The Belgian Revolution (1830) and the closure of the Scheldt again halted that progress. Finally, the river opened again, this time for good, in 1863, paving the way for Antwerp to become one of the shining cities of the world.

Since the River Scheldt flows again, Antwerp has experienced steady and impressive economic growth. Though the years of the two world wars had a substantial impact, the 20th century brought much status and wealth to the city that continues to prosper into the 21st century.

Can a city have two Golden Ages?

According to experts, Antwerp has two Golden Ages.

The first Golden Age started in the 16th century when it became a well-known financial center worldwide. Tradespeople from all over Europe visited here to buy and sell their goods. Even the other colonial powers of Europe took advantage of this city’s leading commercial center status and enjoyed the profit from their trade.

Not only were the tradespeople impressed with Antwerp, but even artists were drawn to the booming prosperity of the city. They explored different subjects and experimented with new art styles. For example, Jan Gossaert (a French-speaking painter) was one of the first few artists who lived in Antwerp and worked with new compositions to create a unique, eclectic style.

The second Golden Age of Antwerp is now. 

Today, Antwerp is the world’s biggest diamond hub, and almost everyone is involved in the lucrative diamond business.

Center of the diamond world

In fact, 84% of the world’s mined diamonds land in Antwerp. This is why Antwerp is the center of the world diamond trade. 

This is a relatively new piece of Antwerp’s history. After WWII, trade started to return slowly. In 1945, the government created the Diamond Office in the Antwerp diamond quarter to help regulate the import and export of diamonds from Antwerp. This facility aimed to make the trade of diamonds as smooth as possible, with minimal interference and red tape.

Antwerp’s diamond district is a great example of the current state of the global diamond industry. In the diamond district, Flemish, Jewish Orthodox, and Indian diamond dealers work alongside manufacturers, service providers, buyers, and traders of rough, polished, and processed diamonds from almost every country where diamonds are mined.

There should be no surprise that the world’s most highly skilled diamond cutters are based here. The expertise and sophisticated financial and commercial infrastructure unmatched worldwide back the diamond culture here.

If you are the center of the diamond world, you would expect a museum to follow suit. The DIVA Museum is where you can learn about the Diamond Industry that has put Antwerp on the map.

If you plan a trip to Antwerp, here are some interesting facts that show this place has many more pleasant surprises.

• The official language of Antwerp is Dutch. However, the residents of this city also speak French and German fluently, as they are also the official languages of Belgium.
• The currency in Belgium is the euro.
• Johann Carolus published the first weekly newspaper of Europe (Relation) in Antwerp almost 400 years ago. The local authors recognize it as the first weekly newspaper in Europe, and the World Association of Newspapers accepts it.
• This city also played an essential role in World War I. It became the fallback point of the Belgian Army when they faced defeat in the battle of Liege.
• Nazi Germany occupied Antwerp and its port during World War II after a series of military operations. The port of Antwerp was vital for them as it assisted the allies (the United Kingdom and France) in pushing toward Germany. But, in September 1944, the British troops from the Armored Division liberated the port and the entire city after four years of German occupation.

Some fun facts

• Antwerp also has the world’s largest coffee storage site. The stock is currently sitting in its port and holds more than 250,000 tons of coffee beans, which is enough for more than 27 billion cups of coffee. If you want to taste the world’s best coffee, you can visit famous coffee bars, such as Kaffeenini, Caffenation, and Kolonel Koffie.
• If you are an artist or an art student, you can’t call yourself a professional if you don’t visit the “Royal Academy for Fine Arts.” This academy is also one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. Though founded in 1663, today it is an internationally acclaimed institute for Fine Arts and offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs to students.
• Historic and beautiful Antwerp hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics right after World War I. The international community awarded these games to Antwerp to renew its devastated spirit.
• You will find one of Europe’s oldest zoos here. This zoo rubs shoulders with history and impresses you with its overall old construction. It has almost 1,000 species of animals. It is a great family activity. The authorities of Antwerp Zoo are proud of their many breeding programs for endangered species.

If you are visiting antwerp for the first time, here are the top 12 things to do to capture its fantastic vibe..

1. Visit Ruben’s house, built by Flemish artist Pieter Paul Rubens. Peter Paul Rubens was a brilliant and versatile artist, and you can visit his “palazetto” in the center of Antwerp. The master lived with his family for years and painted with his colleagues and assistants in a studio he designed. There is, of course, a permanent collection and special exhibitions. It is a well-done tour with a fascinating history and audio stories about the artist, his family, and the home’s history. Worth a visit.

2. Explore the Red Star Line Museum as it offers a memorable trip back in time. Over two million passengers sailed from Antwerp on Red Star Line ships between 1873 and 1934, the great majority of these immigrants bound for America. This is a fascinating museum with beautiful exhibits. It deals directly with immigration in an informative and enlightening way everyone should see.

3. Are you interested in artifacts & artwork? Check out the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom or Museum by the Stream ), which is located along the River Scheldt in the Eilandje district of Antwerp. It opened in May 2011 and is the largest museum in Antwerp. The central focus is Antwerp and its connection to the world. It is superb and has lovely views.

4. Spend time along the core of what makes Antwerp what it is, the River Scheldt . Feel the energy and vitality of Antwerp’s port-city hub. Though it is industrial and has many massive wind turbines, it is still a sight to behold. The Port Authority building is quite impressive in its own right. An easy way to get there is to take the water bus near the Grote Market. You can tour the port and the Schelde River for a few euros.

5. The Antwerp Zoo is also a great attraction for tourists. It is open 365 days a year in the center of Antwerp next to the Antwerpen-Centraal train station. It is the oldest animal park in the country and one of the oldest in the world, established on 21 July 1843.

6. Visit Steen Castle , Het Steen (which stands for the rock), as it is called in Antwerp, is a medieval fortress in the old city center of Antwerp, Belgium. The surviving structure was built between 1200 and 1225 as a gateway to a larger castle of the Dukes of Brabant. As the first stone fortress of Antwerp, Het Steen is Antwerp’s oldest building. It is a photogenic castle with a fantastic entrance bridge.

7. Take a trip to De Koninck Antwerp City Brewery. Belgium is known for its beer; visiting this city and not learning about it would be missing part of the city’s pulse. Get fully immersed in the Belgian beer world and discover all its secrets.

There are many breweries, and De Koninck is number one on Trip Advisor. Other breweries worth visiting include Speciale Belge Taproom and Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie.

8. Explore Antwerp by bike . You can rent a bike and ride independently with the many online route guides. There are also many guided bike tours to check out all the city’s significant sites.

9. You are in the Diamond Capital of the World, so take in the DIVA museum, the new diamond museum in Antwerp. The museum’s collection “features over 500 objects that detail the story of Antwerp’s history with diamonds and gemstones.”

10. Do you love railway stations? Well, you are in luck. Antwerpen-Central Train Station is an absolute must-do when in the city. The gorgeous railway station of Antwerp is a sight for sore eyes. It has a kingly presence but also owns some modern industrialist features, which make it more warm and elegant. Even if you aren’t taking a train there, make a point to stop by.

11. Wander in awe in The Cathedral of Our Lady. The Roman Catholic Gothic-style cathedral is in the heart of Antwerp. Construction started in 1352, and although the first stage was completed in 1521, the structure itself has never been ‘completed.’ It contains several significant works by the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens and paintings by artists such as Otto van Veen, Jacob de Backer, and Marten de Vos. It is stunning both inside and out!

12. Shop to your heart’s content on Antwerp’s Meir . Whether just window shopping or people-watching, it will be quite an experience. Meir is the number one street for shopping in Antwerp and the most prominent shopping street in all of Belgium. It is located in the core of Antwerp and is very pedestrian-friendly. Take a lovely afternoon stroll while viewing the grand window displays of the shops and the ornate Rococo architecture. While shopping in Meir, make sure to visit Stadsfeestzaal Shopping Centre. The Centre is referred to as the beating heart of Antwerp. It is the place where 6.5 million people a year enjoy a unique shopping experience in a beautifully restored environment (the city’s former event hall) that exudes luxury and grandeur. It draws shoppers from all over the world.

The Most Attractive Feature s

In our opinion, the most attractive features of Antwerp were Steen Castle and The Cathedral of Our Lady.

Steen Castle is the oldest building in Antwerp and exhibits architecture from the Roman Empire. It has a glorious past and is a symbol of art and ancient architecture. This castle was built in the early medieval ages to prevent the incursion of Vikings. Therefore, you will find a lot of history of Europe’s wars here. This castle has 11 rooms. Walking through them, you learn about Antwerp’s history and get a first-hand look at castle life.

After 169 years of construction, the Cathedral of Our Lady has dominated Antwerp’s skyline since 1521, with a height of about 360 feet. It’s the highest Gothic building in the Low Countries. The Cathedral is an iconic treasure, with an impressive collection of marvelous art pieces, including a series of paintings by Rubens.

It has been under a twenty-year renovation, and finally, the seven-naved church has been restored to its former architectural self. Some of the most beautiful features include Rubens’ ‘Elevation of the Cross’ and his ‘Descent from the Cross.’ We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and wished we could’ve given it more time.

Dining in Antwerp, Belgium

Antwerp is a culinary hub known worldwide for it is gastronomic excellence. It has over 100 Michelin Antwerpen restaurants alone. However, many superb restaurants are not even listed in the Michelin Guide. We arrived late, and it was not able to enjoy dinner in the city. That was such a disappointment. As a result, we can’t recommend any places.

When we travel, we look at reviews at THE Fork, and here is the link for Antwerp . You can choose from many well-reviewed restaurants.

Foods that are not to miss while in Antwerp.

1. This may sound cliche, but you are in Belgium, so get some local Belgian Waffles. They are a specialty here. A favorite place for waffles in Antwerp is La Gaufrerie, next to the Cathedral of Our Lady.

2. Chocolate – Belgium is famous for its chocolate, so you will see chocolate shops everywhere in Antwerp. There are a lot of world-famous brands in Antwerp, but nothing beats locally-made chocolate.  Sjokolat  was one of these hidden gems for chocolate.

Belgian chocolate is a great gift for family and friends. But don’t forget to bring some home for yourself, too.

How Do You Get to Antwerp, Belgium

From brussels airport.

The largest airport in Belgium is Brussels Airport. You can reach Antwerpen Centraal Station in 36 minutes by train. Take the Intercity Direct to Amsterdam Central.

You can also take a long-distance bus to the Antwerp center, choosing the  Airport Express   or the  BlaBlaBus . You can buy a ticket for this via the websites. The bus stops are directly below the arrivals hall, at level 0.

Taxis and Uber are available from the airport. Remember that the distance between Antwerp and Brussels is more than 25 miles, so the ride cost is steep.

When we traveled to Belgium, we had a rental car. We found the roadways excellent with clear signage, but once in the city, it was a bit more complicated and stressful. Though we did not arrive or leave during rush hour, we heard it can be challenging to get around. Plan to park and walk or take excellent public transportation.

Our hotel provides parking, but we are told parking can be hard to come by, and it is best to reserve a space via Mobypark before your arrival. We did not use this service and can not vouch for it.

Antwerpen Centraal Station is the ideal station to go to if you want to visit Antwerp. You can walk from the station to the Meir Shopping area in minutes. Antwerp has other stations as well. Depending on your destination, you can see which is closest to you.

Where to Stay In Antwerp, Belgium

As we mentioned, we only had one night in Antwerp, but we did stay, in our opinion, in the perfect location. We were at the Hilton Antwerp Old Town. The hotel is in the heart of Old Town, overlooking the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Old Town square and steps from the waterfront. Shops, restaurants, and the Plantin-Moretus Museum are a short walk from our door. Antwerp Zoo and Antwerp Central Rail Station are within a couple of miles. We loved the Old Town area, and it would be a great choice if you could stay there.

When to visit and for how long?

Summer is a great time to visit Antwerp. The average daily temperature stays at 18 degrees Celsius, and the day lasts, on average, 15 hours.

But the summer is also busy as it’s the tourist season and the residents are often on holiday too.

We recommend spending two days here if you want to get a better feel for this city. It’s an ideal amount of time to check out all the famous attractions of Antwerp. We only spent one night in the town and packed a lot in. That said, we short-changed ourselves. There is so much to offer here, and this city’s food alone is worth many meals.

Final Thoughts

Due to its historic status, this city oozes power and attracts travelers from all around the world. It is a cosmopolitan city at its core with a diverse international community. It has everything you could wish for in a European city. This city has energy and youth while paying respect to its long, rich history.

We noticed a feeling of community and pride in its people in our short time there. Everyone was so welcoming and kind. It was an easy city to navigate. It felt safe everywhere and was clean and well-kept. So, are you ready to immerse yourself in the majesty of Antwerp?

How to get to Antwerp  

Antwerp is found in northern Belgium, on the border with the Netherlands. The city is located on the River Scheldt, which flows into the North Sea and which gave rise to the importance of Antwerp’s harbour over the centuries.

It’s one of the largest ports in Europe, but these days, you’re more likely to be arriving overland, or by air, rather than on the water.

Antwerp’s small airport is located on the outskirts of the city, but only offers flights to a few European destinations, such as London, due to the fact that Brussels Airport is just 45 minutes away to the south.

There are regular buses to the centre of Antwerp, and regular trains direct from Brussels Airport to Antwerp Central Station.

In fact, Antwerp Central Station is used enough by travellers flying into other airports that it has an airport code, allowing you to book tickets on the rail line as part of your flight ticket, and allowing for seamless transfers.

There are direct trains from Amsterdam Schipol Airport, which is one and a half hours away, and even further afield to Paris.

There are great rail connections, and bus connections too, across the rest of Belgium and to most of Western Europe as well.

What to expect in Antwerp

As the largest city in Flanders, Antwerp is the centre of the Flemish community in Belgium. For travellers, that means that the primary language spoken by residents is the Flemish dialect of Dutch.

Belgium is a multilingual country though and you’ll find that many locals also speak French and that these days, the majority of the population also speak English to a high level.

As part of the European Union, Belgium adopted the Euro as their currency, and you’ll find that there are plenty of money changers and ATMs around Antwerp where you can get hold of cash. You’ll also find that credit and debit cards are accepted everywhere.

How to get around Antwerp

Antwerp is a large city, with a population reaching to well over 500,000, and there are countless different districts and suburbs within the metropolitan area.

Many of the best attractions are found within the historic city centre, between the river and Antwerp central station, but many are also found further south, in Antwerp Zuid.

It’s very safe to walk through Antwerp, however, for longer journeys, you may want to make use of the local public transport.

There are buses and trams which run set routes across the city, and which offer great fares. If you are using lots of public transport, you can purchase multiple tickets to use at your leisure.

If you are also visiting lots of different tourist attractions though, then you may want to consider purchasing an Antwerp City Card.

For a one-off cost, the card includes entrance to many museums and attractions, as well as giving you unlimited access to public transport. The cards can be valid for a period of 24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the length of your stay.

The best time to visit Antwerp

Antwerp is very much a city break destination, and for that reason, you can really visit any time of the year.

The busiest times of the year are generally the summer season, between June, July and August, or the winter season, over the Christmas holidays.

Summer brings great weather to Antwerp, with long days and lots of sunshine, and the city comes alive, with parks overflowing with people and bars and restaurants spilling out onto the streets.

Winter, but in particular, the festive period, sees the Christmas markets opening up for business and people travel to Antwerp specifically to shop, eat and drink over the holidays.

It’s a wonderful time of the year to be in the city, but just remember to wrap up warm.

The shoulder seasons – spring and autumn – can be quieter times to explore the city, and you’ll find there are fewer tourists around.

The weather can be unpredictable, however, and at times dreary, but considering many of Antwerp’s best attractions are found inside, this may not be too much of an issue.

Things to do in Antwerp 

Grote markt.

Any Antwerp travel guide will tell you to start your tour through the city at the Grote Markt, or the market square. This is the centre of the historic Old Town, and it’s a marvellous place to get acquainted with Antwerp.

At the Grote Markt, you can find many of the most iconic buildings in the city, including the grand city hall which dates back to the 16th century.

Some of the coolest restaurants in Antwerp are found around the square, as are some of the best cafes and bars too.

Peter Paul Rubens’ House

Peter Paul Rubens is one of the most influential Flemish artists to have ever lived. He was prominent during the 16th century and operated from a studio in the city of Antwerp.

The house where he lived is now a museum, combining both history and art to give visitors an insight into local culture.

Mode Museum

The MoMu, or Mode Museum, is an intriguing museum that focuses on the fashion scene in Antwerp.

The city has a huge legacy when it comes to contemporary fashion, with many famous local designers such as Dries van Noten propelling Belgian fashion onto the international scene in the past few decades. You can learn all about it at the Mode Museum.

Red Star Line Museum  

Antwerp has one of the largest ports on the continent, and during the era of transatlantic passenger ships, the city was a major embarkation point for European emigrants heading to the United States.

One of the most iconic passenger liners in operation from the port was the Red Star Line, which transported several million people across the Atlantic in search of new lives in the USA. 

The Red Star Line Museum is a moving tribute to the ships and the people that travelled from Antwerp, across the Atlantic, from the 1870s until the early 1930s. It’s an insight into emigration, and why so many people left Europe for the Americas.

Cathedral of our Lady

The Cathedral of our Lady is the most iconic church in Antwerp and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the extensive Belfries of Belgium and France submission, which protects 56 churches across the two countries.

Construction of the medieval church began far back in the 14th century, although there had been a place of worship in the same location for hundreds of years prior to this too.

The interior is beautiful to see, and the spires stretch to over one hundred metres in height, ensuring that the cathedral has long been a permanent fixture on the Antwerp skyline.

The MAS Museum, or Museum aan de Strom, is one of the newest, and largest museums in the city.

The distinctive building is found looking over the water, and its aim is to promote the history and culture of the city of Antwerp. The museum focuses on the harbour and the connection of the people to the oceans.

Plantin-Moretus Museum

The Plantin-Moretus Museum takes visitors on a journey through the world of print and through the historic printing presses pioneered in Antwerp by locals Plantin and Moretus in the 16th century.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most intriguing museums in the city, and you’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for the power of the printed word.

What to eat in Antwerp

Any Antwerp food guide will advise you to try the local Flemish dishes when you are in the city, and you should begin your culinary journey by enjoying a hearty Flemish stew, complete with slow-cooked meat and vegetables.

Many of the best restaurants in Antwerp Old Town will serve up great traditional dishes, and as well as the stew you should indulge in a plate of mussels, garnished with the ubiquitous Belgian fries and mayo, and finished off with a bowl of Flemish mousse for dessert.

Where to stay in Antwerp

Antwerp, as a modern city and popular tourist destination, has a wide range of accommodation for travellers.

Many of the most upmarket establishments are found in the Old Town, and there are some lovely boutique hotel options on offer amongst the historic streets.

One of the best boutique options is the Hotel de Witte Lelie , which dates back to the 17th century.

The centre tends to be pricier, however, and if you are looking for budget hotels or for hostels or Airbnb, then the area outside of the Old Town, towards the central station, has some great value accommodation.

Tours to do in  Antwerp

Day trips from Antwerp

Belgium is a small country, and you’re never too far away from other major cities when you stay in Antwerp. The capital, Brussels , is less than one hour away on the train and makes for a great day trip.

Visit the royal palaces, explore the European Parliament, wander through marvellous art galleries and enjoy some great tasting beer and food.

The historic, medieval streets of Ghent are also just an hour away by train from Antwerp and offer you the chance to explore one of the most historic cities in Belgium.

Quite simply, Ghent is stunning. This is historic European architecture at its best, in a supreme riverside location. There are castles, cathedrals, spires and towers, and the city really is straight out of a fairy tale.

Mechelen is a small city that sees few tourists in comparison to Belgium’s other major tourist destinations, but this under visited location boasts one of the finest cathedrals in the country.

Just a twenty-minute train ride from Antwerp, and you can spend the day exploring historic sights and, like everywhere in Belgium, trying the local beers!

How is the Olympic gymnastics team selected?

The top all-around finisher after two days of competition at the trials will get an automatic spot on the five-member women's Olympic team. The four other women competing in Paris will be determined by a selection committee, which will use the results from the trials and previous competitions to complete the team.

Four Olympic alternates will also be named in Minneapolis, two of whom will travel to Paris to train with the team.

Assembling the U.S. team revolves primarily around the team final competition, in which the team gold medal is awarded. Three gymnasts compete on each apparatus, and all three scores count.

Selecting the gymnasts who can maximize Team USA's score in the three-up-three-count format is often compared to assembling a puzzle. Picking the team is not always as simple as selecting the top five ranked gymnasts in the all-around at the trials.

If the top five finishers in the all-around are all high scorers on vault and floor, for example, but weak on uneven bars and beam, taking the top five gymnasts to Paris would leave Team USA vulnerable on those events. To maximize the team score, the selection committee could select an athlete who may have finished lower down in the all-around but is the country's highest scorer on bars and beam.

On the men's side, the five-member team competes on six apparatuses. The automatic spot is harder to clinch, requiring a gymnast to finish first in the all-around and in the top three on at least three events. No male gymnast did that at the U.S. Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

Who is in contention for the Olympic team?

Twenty men and 16 women will vie for Olympic berths this weekend. Top contenders on the men’s side include national all-around champion Brody Malone, world all-around bronze medalist Fred Richard , Khoi Young, Yul Moldauer, Asher Hong, Donnell Whittenburg and Shane Wiskus.

The U.S. men are in the hunt for their first Olympic medal since 2008 after they won a bronze at last year's world championships.

While 15 female gymnasts are competing at the trials, only about 11 are in the conversation to make the Paris Olympic team.

Skye Blakely, a 19-year-old Texas native, was a front-runner for the Paris team going into the trials, but she suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during podium training Wednesday. She was a member of the gold medal-winning teams at the 2022 and 2023 world championships and recently finished second in the all-around behind Biles at the U.S. Championships.

Barring serious injury or other unforeseen calamities, Biles is going to Paris. She is the reigning world all-around champion and a 37-time world and Olympic medalist. Her scoring potential is the highest of any gymnast in the world, and she is the favorite to win Olympic gold medals in the all-around, vault and floor events. For Biles, the trials are more about mental preparation, so she can simulate the pressure of an Olympic crowd ahead of Paris.

Shilese Jones

Ahead of the U.S. Championships a few weeks ago, many would have called Jones, a six-time world medalist, a lock for the Paris team. However, Jones' status is a bit of a question mark heading into the trials after she withdrew from the championships nursing a shoulder injury. At the Classic in May, she solidified herself as the country’s strongest all-around gymnast behind Biles, finishing second in the all-around and winning the uneven bars. If she performs anywhere close to that level in Minneapolis, Jones is very likely to make her first Olympic team after she fell short in 2021.

L e e, the re igning Olympic all-around champion , is not quite as strong on all four apparatuses as she was in Tokyo after having battled a kidney illness for the past year. However, her Paris prospects are still promising because of her medal potential on the balance beam and the uneven bars.

On both days of the U.S. Championships, Lee delivered spectacular routines on the beam, cementing her potential as an asset the U.S. would certainly use on that event in the team final. Lee will hope to increase her all-around score to prove that she can be relied upon on all four events in a pinch, but her bars and beam could be enough for the selection committee to take her.

Major contenders

Jordan chiles.

Chiles achieved her Olympic dreams in 2021 when she won a silver medal in the team event at the Tokyo Games. Like some of the other gymnasts in this category, Chiles is a very balanced all-around competitor, but she lacks a standout event. She is unlikely to medal individually at the Olympics if she were to make the team, but she can prove at the trials that she can be relied upon to cover any apparatus in the team competition.

If Biles, Jones, Blakely and Lee make the team, Chiles could secure the fifth spot with a strong score on the floor exercise and a high finish in the all-around across the two days of competition.

The reigning Olympic champion on floor, Carey, at top form, would complement this team in many ways. She is obviously strong on the floor exercise and has potential for a vault medal, as well. She is a master at peaking at the right time, and she unveiled an Amanar vault in training. She is absolutely still in the hunt for her second Olympic team.

Kayla DiCello

After having been named an alternate for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, DiCello is back for another shot at her Olympic dream. She took the year off from competing in NCAA gymnastics for the University of Florida to return to her elite club and train for Paris. It appears that that decision has paid off for DiCello, whose bronze medal performance at the championships had "Olympian" written all over it. She sometimes struggles with consistency, but if she hits eight out of eight routines this weekend, this may be her year.

Leanne Wong

After a disappointing performance at the championships, Wong seemed to be on track to repeat as an Olympic alternate. At a training session in Minneapolis on Wednesday, she debuted a Cheng vault, potentially intercepting that narrative. Wong’s boost in difficulty could pay off if she competes it successfully, but last-minute upgrades are not always worth the risk.

Her gymnastics is stunning to watch, and she will hope to return to her consistency earlier in the quad, having won a gold medal in the team event at the last two world championships and an individual all-around silver at the 2021 world championships.

Potential dark horses

Joscelyn roberson.

Roberson trains at World Champions Centre alongside Biles. She had a stellar 2023 and made the world team last fall, though she was injured immediately before the team final. She is a “power gymnast” whose best events are floor and vault, but she is being outpaced by gymnasts with similar strengths.

Kaliya Lincoln

Like Jones, Lincoln is coming back from an injury and had to file a petition to compete at the trials. She is here primarily for one event, floor exercise, which also happens to be USA's weakest at the moment. It is very possible that Lincoln finishes top three on the event at the trials, but unfortunately she is not the strongest all-around gymnast.

Lincoln's floor would maximize Team USA's scoring potential in the team final, but the selection committee might decide it is too risky to take a gymnast who cannot put up usable scores on bars and beam in case another member of the team goes down.

Hezly Rivera

Before the championships, very few people had Rivera, a first-year senior, on their Olympic team. After a surprise sixth-place finish there, she has found herself in the conversation for the Paris team. She lacks international experience, and her best events are the same as Lee's, so she will most likely be relegated to an alternate position at this point. However, if top contenders struggle with consistency, she could be a wild-card pick for the team.

Tiana Sumanasekera

Sumanasekera, a beam queen and another training mate of the GOAT, was one of a handful of gymnasts to hit all her routines at the championships. Making the Paris team may be a long shot for her, but she could snag an alternate spot. The future is bright for Sumanasekera, 16, who is expected to hang around until Los Angeles 2028 for a shot at a home Olympics.
