You have the option to vary the base excess when you buy your policy (premium adjustment will apply depending on the excess selected). The choice is yours.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is an insurance policy designed to financially protect you while you’re travelling, and to protect the financial investments you’ve made by booking a holiday. While purchasing travel insurance is not mandatory, the Australian Government strongly advises that all Australian travellers protect themselves with travel insurance¹ , regardless of whether you are travelling domestically or internationally.

A travel insurance policy is an essential tool designed to help protect you from financial losses that can be incurred from a wide range of factors. These factors include (but are not limited to) the need to cancel a trip, needing overseas medical treatment, or replacing lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings.

Always read the PDS before buying a travel insurance policy to make sure the product is right for you.

Important steps to consider before getting a travel insurance quote

The last thing you want is to end up with a policy that doesn’t cover what you need. So to get you started here are a few things you should consider:

Check smartraveller.gov.au to make sure your destination is safe to visit.

Confirm that all people named on the travel insurance policy are residents of Australia. If you are in Australia on a working holiday VISA, a sponsorship VISA or even a student VISA, it’s important for you to have valid Medicare cover, or private health insurance, for the length of your trip.

Make sure you buy your travel insurance policy before you start your trip. If you buy it after you’ve left it will be invalid.

Tell us about your  pre-existing medical conditions , we can assess your pre-existing medical condition and if approved, offer you cover. It’s really important that you’re open and honest about this, because if you don’t declare all pre-existing medical conditions they may not be covered.

Work out if you’re willing to pay an excess. An excess is deducted from any payment we make to you. For example, having a $200 excess reduces your premium, but if you make a claim, $200 would be deducted from any claim payment. Conversely, if you chose to waive the excess, your policy would be more expensive but you would get 100% of the claim back, provided your claim is approved and does not exceed your policy limits. Our standard excess amount is $100 but you can decide to remove or double this amount through the purchase process. Find more info about excess here .

Read the  Product Disclosure Statement . Familiarising yourself with it now can save you headaches later on.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?**

Nobody wants to be involved in an emergency while on holiday, but travel doesn’t always go to plan.

Overseas emergency medical assistance provides you with financial assistance if you’re injured or fall sick while travelling overseas.

Having travel insurance means you’re covered for emergency medical evacuations, surgical and hospital treatments, and ambulance costs.

We will also cover the cost of your return to Australia earlier than planned if this is medically necessary, and we consider all pre-existing medical conditions.

It’s extremely inconvenient, not to mention costly if your luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged while you’re travelling.

But with the appropriate cover we will pay for the value of your property at the time it was lost, stolen or damaged.

Remember that all items you are claiming as lost, stolen, or damaged must be reported to the appropriate authority, usually within 24 hours, and you will need to be able to provide proof of ownership.

Losing your cash or travel documents might be your worst nightmare, but with the appropriate policy, we will pay for the cost of replacing your cash or important documents if they are lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip.

This includes your passport, travellers cheques, and visas.

You may not be covered in situations where your documents or cash were left unattended, and you will need to provide proof of ownership for any lost or stolen personal money.

Travel delays are an unfortunate reality these days.

There are many causes, but the number of global delays per day can often be as high as the tens of thousands.

If you are financially affected by a travel delay of more than 12 hours, and are covered for travel delays, we will reimburse the cost of your necessary additional meals and accommodation expenses. Some limits are applied to this, and you will be reimbursed up to the amount shown on your policy.

Some travellers prefer to hire a car on holiday for the additional freedom.

However if the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident, you may be responsible for paying the cost of the rental car excess.

We will reimburse the rental car insurance excess, if a car you have rented during your trip is involved in a motor vehicle accident while you are driving, or is damaged or stolen while in your custody.

Please note rental vehicle excess is available on Silver and Gold level cover up to the amount shown on your policy.

We hope that your trip goes ahead as planned, but sometimes things go wrong and you may need to cancel.

An insurance policy that includes cancellation cover will mean you are reimbursed for the cost of flights, accommodation, visas and paid for excursions or activities, in the event that you need to cancel your travel plans due to injury, unforeseen illness overseas, or because of other reasons that are outlined in the PDS.

We will also cover the cost of rescheduling your trip prior to departure if the cost of rescheduling does not exceed the cost of the cancellation.

**Terms, conditions, exclusions, sub-limits, and/or limits apply. For full details and before making a decision, consider the relevant PDS .

Customer testimonials

“easy process to make a claim”.

“I had to cancel my trip due to a medical condition, so I made claim. I was updated when my case was being reviewed, then advised when I got approved. Funds were in my account the following night. It took 10 days in total from InsureandGo receiving documents to funds in my bank, excellent service. Easy process to make a claim.”

“Would definitely recommend this company”

“This was the first time with this company, and it was very easy to set up our policy. Unfortunately we made a small claim which was dealt with very quickly and would definitely recommend this company.”

“I needed to claim, they were first class”

“This is the only travel insurance company I use. I can get insured for my pre existing conditions, the premium is reasonable, and when I needed to claim, they were first class, helpful, responsive, and paid immediately, allowing me to be released from the hospital in Thailand.”

Frequently Asked Questions

You can either  lodge a claim online  or  download a claims form  from the website and post it to us with all your supporting documents (e.g. receipts, police reports). We will endeavour to give you a response within 10 business days.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the claims process.

You should register your claim within 30 days of completing your travel.

The important reason for purchasing travel insurance is to gain coverage for overseas medical expenses which can prove to be extremely expensive in many countries should you require it.

The Australian Government or Medicare won’t be able to help you with overseas medical expenses, and although Australia has a number of reciprocal healthcare agreements with other nations, this will not provide financial assistance for transportation of very ill patients back to Australia to receive treatment.

Some countries might ask you for a copy of your travel insurance policies before granting a tourist visa. Check Smart Traveller to understand which countries will ask you to purchase travel insurance before applying for a visa. Despite not providing medical coverage within Australia, domestic travel insurance is important for providing you with coverage for situations such as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings, trips disrupted by natural disasters, and more.

We automatically cover you for unlimited medical, hospital and surgical for the complications of pregnancy up to and including the 30th week for one baby only.

There is no cover for claims resulting from your pregnancy or childbirth after the 30th week of pregnancy.

However medical expenses cover will be provided for a range of complications associated with pregnancy before the 31st week of pregnancy. Please read the PDS for more information.

If you become pregnant after you purchase a policy and will be more than 30 weeks pregnant (or 20 weeks if you are expecting more than one baby) at the start of, or during, your trip, you may be covered for the cancellation of your trip before departure, as explained in the PDS.

Please keep in mind that no cover is available for children who are born overseas during your trip.

InsureandGo does not automatically include cover for any pre-existing medical conditions. But all conditions can be considered via a medical questionnaire that you can either complete online or through the call centre.

A pre-existing medical condition is any diagnosed medical condition for which, in the last 5 years, you or any insured person has suffered from or has received any form of medical advice, treatment or medication.

To determine whether your condition will be covered, you will need to complete the Medical Assessment during the purchase process online or over the phone.

Please contact us if you would like to complete the questionnaire over the phone.

When purchasing travel insurance with InsureandGo, you will have the option to choose between three different levels of cover; Bare Essentials, Silver, and Gold.

Bare Essentials is the most basic level of cover, which includes essential coverage such as medical expenses, personal liability, emergency expenses, and baggage cover. Silver includes all of this, but covers you for a lot more, including trip cancellation, travel delay expenses, and more. Gold Policies cover everything in the Bare Essentials and Silver levels, though insure you at a higher cash value, and additionally include cover for special events, hijacking, pet care, and journey resumption. All pre-existing medical conditions are considered for all three levels of cover.

If you opt for an annual policy^(not currently available) over a single trip policy^, you will be covered for unlimited international trips over a 12 month period. Annual policies include unlimited overseas medical expenses, unlimited cancellation cover, and baggage covered up to $15,000 on Gold Policies.

To customize your policy, there are a number of additional upgrades available which offer coverage for winter sports, adventure sports, golf, business equipment, and natural disasters.

InsureandGo offers one of the most comprehensive policies when it comes to pregnancy travel insurance, covering you up to and including your 30th week if you are expecting a single child, or up until your 24th week if expecting multiple babies.

Parents or grandparents can buy insurance on behalf of their dependent children or grandchildren.

Dependent children are considered as your financially dependent children or grandchildren (including fostered, or adopted children or grandchildren) who are under 18 years of age and who are named on the Policy Schedule.

That basically means, those 17 or under can travel for free**, as long as they travel with parents. However, if the child is 18 or above, he/she will be charged as adults, whether or not they’re on our couple/family policy^.

Parents or grandparents can buy insurance on behalf of dependants as long as dependants under 16 years of age will have full 100% adult supervision during the trip.

Purchasing travel insurance earlier won’t cost you any more money, as you will only pay for the travel period covered by your policy. The sooner you purchase your travel insurance, the longer you can take advantage of cancellation cover if it’s included as a part of your cover. This can help you recover prepaid travel costs should you need to cancel your trip for covered reasons before you begin your journey. Prepaid travel costs may include flights, accommodation, and tours, and these may be covered if you need to cancel your trip due to employment redundancy, a natural disaster, certain situations relating to pregnancy, or the injury, illness, serious damage to your home in Australia or death of someone in the travelling party or a relative based in Australia.

A PDS or Product Disclosure Statement is a legal document that contains useful information about your travel insurance policy. It is very important to fully read the PDS, as it contains the key benefits and features of your policy and explains your rights and obligations in relation to your policy. Reading the PDS will allow you to thoroughly understand your policy and better help you choose the policy that is right for you.

Within the PDS, you will find helpful and detailed information regarding your travel insurance policy’s applicable excesses, premiums, period of cover, coverage limits, exclusions, and additional coverage options. Fully understanding the PDS is essential.

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: the higher the excess the lower the cost.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Product Disclosure Statement to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Product Disclosure Statement  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Product Disclosure Statement  .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.

travel insurance south australia

Congratulations, Southern Cross!

Southern Cross received the following awards in the 2023 Product Awards:

  • 'Travel Insurance - Comprehensive' - Winner
  • 'Travel Insurance - Seniors' - Winner
  • 'Travel Insurance - Value' - Highly Commended

Southern Cross Travel Insurance is one of only a few insurers we've found that offer some cover for COVID-related claims. 3 key benefits are as follows:

  • Medical expenses if you are diagnosed while on your journey (overseas policies only).
  • Pre-trip cancellation and amendment costs to change your travel arrangements if you or a relevant person are diagnosed prior to your travel.
  • On-trip cancellation and amendment costs if you or a relevant person are diagnosed during your trip and it's interrupted or cut short.

There are some scenarios that are not covered and you should review the Southern Cross Travel Insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) before making a decision on whether this cover meets your needs. A major exclusion to be aware of is that you must be fully vaccinated to be covered for COVID-19 expenses.

Other COVID-19 exclusions include:

  • Travel to a destination that Smartraveller has rated a "Level 3" or "Level 4".
  • Costs related to lockdowns or government restrictions.
  • Costs related to any pause to quarantine-free travel.
  • Repatriation to Australia.

If Southern Cross's COVID-19 cover isn't quite hitting the mark, we've compared all the providers that offer cover for COVID-19 here .

In total, Southern Cross offers 5 travel insurance policies. These are: Domestic, International Medical Only, International Comprehensive (Single Trip),International Comprehensive (Annual Multi-trip) and Working overseas. Here are some of the main insured events a policy can cover you for:

The excess is the amount you usually need to pay when you make a claim, but with Southern Cross, you can choose to remove your excess for a higher premium.

For more flexibility, Southern Cross Travel Insurance gives you the option to add extra cover to your policy. This can be done after you select your level of cover.

  • Taking any valuables? If the value of any items you're taking exceeds the limits of your policy, you can opt for specified items cover .
  • Going skiing or snowboarding? Get additional cover to be protected for gear damage or the medical expenses incurred if you injure yourself on the slopes . You'll need to wear a helmet or you might void your policy.

Like all insurers, there are a few situations you won't be covered for under your travel insurance policy. Southern Cross Travel Insurance will not generally provide any cover in the following situations:

  • If your claim arises due to a pre-existing condition that is not covered by your policy
  • If your claim arises due to a sexually transmitted infection (excluding covered conditions relating to HIV)
  • Pregnancy after the 24th week
  • If your claim arises because of being under the influence of alcohol , solvents or any other illegal drug
  • If your claim relates to most elective or cosmetic procedures
  • If you participate in any professional or contact sport , motorsport, hunting, abseiling or paragliding

Other exclusions which could apply to a COVID-19 claim include:

  • Medical evacuation because of COVID-19
  • Travel to a destination that Smartraveller has rated a "Level 3" or "Level 4" due to COVID-19
  • Costs related to lockdowns or government restrictions owing to COVID-19

Make sure you read Southern Cross Travel Insurance's PDS for a full list of situations that won't be covered.

Making a claim with Southern Cross Travel Insurance is easy and the whole process can be done online. Remember to keep any supporting documents such as receipts, medical notes or police reports to help your claim go through smoothly.

  • Head to https://www.scti.com.au/claims/make-a-claim
  • Enter your policy number, email, full name and date of birth to log in
  • Complete your claim details by answering all sections
  • Upload any supporting documents relevant to your claim
  • Submit, then your claim should be processed within 10 business days

Southern Cross offers 4 straightforward policies with enough customisation and flexibility to suit most travellers. You'll find generous limits for theft or damage to your belongings, dependent children up to the age of 21 covered for free and the ability to extend your cover if you decide to stay overseas longer. All features that you don't find every day with other insurers.

Where Southern Cross Travel Insurance falls short is with certain exclusions in its policies. There is no cover for cruises that stay in Australian waters or pregnancy after 24 weeks. While Southern Cross does have COVID-19 cover, it comes with more restrictions than other insurers, including the need to be fully vaccinated.

If you're still not sure about Southern Cross, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

Is there an age limit on its policies?

The age limit for Southern Cross Travel Insurance's policy is 118.

I have a pre-existing medical condition – is it covered by Southern Cross Travel Insurance?

SCTI's PDS does not list automatically included pre-existing conditions. It's best to declare everything at the time of policy purchase and fill out a medical assessment, so SCTI is aware of your medical conditions.

If your condition isn't automatically included, SCTI can use the medical assessment to consider your cover and any applicable premium costs.

Are kids free on this policy?

Yes, Southern Cross Travel Insurance covers kids for free but they must be "dependent children". This means they need to be under 21 years old at the start date of your policy. Children include your direct kids, can be stepchildren, foster children and even grandchildren.

We are a review and comparison site and we don’t operate a call centre. But you can call Southern Cross Travel Insurance on 1800 196 484. Hope this helps!

Avatar

You may be covered for trip cancellations if you need to cancel due to sickness, so long as you took out cover before you became sick. It’s likely that you will need to provide evidence that you’re unfit to travel from a doctor.

I’d suggest contacting the insurer directly.

Thanks, Gary

i am considering the medical only international insurance cover but i have not been vaccinated against covid 19. can i still buy this policy

Avatar

Thanks for your message. While I can’t see anything in Southern Cross’ Eligibility criteria that specifically mentions the need to be vaccinated against COVID, it’s best to reach out to the insurer directly to confirm this.

Yes you should still inform them of your pre-existing condition.

Kind regards, Gary

This is a Finder review page about Southern Cross Travel insurance. We are not directly affiliated with Southern Cross, so you’ll need to contact them directly about your policy.

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.

We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.

Finding the Ideal Travel Insurance

Embarking on a journey often involves uncertainty, and travel insurance acts as a crucial safety net. This guide will help you navigate the process of finding the best travel insurance to suit your needs.

Travel insurance is designed to mitigate significant financial risks during your travels. While it might not be necessary for less expensive trips, it's a valuable asset for costly, international, or unpredictable journeys, especially in the COVID-era.

In the year ending April 2021, travelers spent an average of $234 on travel insurance for trips lasting two to three weeks, as reported by Squaremouth. This cost represents just over 6% of the average trip cost.

Selecting the right insurance plan depends on various factors. Let's explore the common travel insurance needs, factors affecting costs, different insurance products, and how to get covered.

The coverage you need will dictate the type of policy you should choose. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Travel Medical Plan : Covers medical expenses not included in your regular health insurance.
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation : Assistance if you need to be transported to a hospital or back home due to illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Delay : Reimbursement for nonrefundable reservations if you need to cancel or cut your trip short, or face delays.
  • Cancel for Any Reason Coverage : Refunds nonrefundable reservations for any cancellation reason.
  • Baggage and Personal Belongings : Covers lost, stolen, or damaged luggage.
  • 24-Hour Assistance Services : Help with finding legal assistance abroad.
  • Car Rental Collision Insurance : Covers rental car damages.

The cost of travel insurance varies based on:

  • Trip Length and Cost : Longer and more expensive trips typically have higher insurance costs.
  • Local Healthcare Costs : High healthcare costs at your destination can increase insurance prices.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions : Existing health issues can raise the cost.
  • Coverage Scope : More comprehensive policies are pricier.
  • Age : Older travelers often face higher rates.
  • Optional Supplements : Add-ons like "Cancel For Any Reason" can increase costs.

Travel insurance is usually sold as a comprehensive package, but some providers offer customizable policies. The most common types include:

  • Travel Medical Insurance : Provides health coverage while traveling, excluding routine medical events and often certain adventure sports.
  • Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Delay : Covers nonrefundable costs due to cancellation or delays for specific reasons.
  • Baggage and Personal Belongings : Reimburses for lost or damaged luggage and belongings.
  • Emergency Medical Assistance, Evacuation, and Repatriation : Covers medical expenses and transportation in emergencies.
  • 24-Hour Assistance : Offers around-the-clock help for various travel-related issues.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance : Pays a lump sum for accidental death or loss of limb, sight, speech, or hearing.
  • Rental Car Coverage : Covers damages to rental cars.
  • Single Trip Insurance : Ideal for one-off trips, priced based on the trip cost.
  • Long-Term Travel Insurance : Covers multiple trips, suitable for frequent travelers, with some limitations on trip length and coverage scope.

When considering travel insurance, assess what coverage you already have, such as through credit cards. Then, decide on additional coverage needed. Common methods to obtain travel insurance include:

  • Credit Cards : Some offer free travel insurance benefits when used for booking.
  • Travel Agents and Reservation Sites : Offer easy-to-purchase insurance during booking.
  • Insurance Companies : Direct purchase allows for customized policies.
  • Comparison Sites : Compare different policies and quotes in one place.

To find a policy that meets your specific needs and budget, compare offerings from various providers. Consider using comparison sites that feature a range of plans and customer reviews.

Selecting the right travel insurance involves understanding your coverage needs, comparing costs, and considering various policy types. Whether you opt for a single trip or long-term policy, ensure it aligns with your travel plans and offers the necessary protection.

1. Which insurance is best for visitors to Australia?

The best insurance for visitors to Australia depends on individual needs, including the duration of stay, types of activities planned, and personal health considerations. Companies like Cover-More, 1Cover, and Southern Cross Travel Insurance are notable options, each offering various plans that cater to different requirements. It's important to look for policies that cover medical expenses, trip cancellations, and any specific activities you plan to engage in while in Australia.

2. What is the most reliable insurance company in Australia?

The reliability of an insurance company can be gauged by its customer service reputation, claim approval rate, and policy transparency. Southern Cross Travel Insurance is highly regarded in these aspects, as indicated by their high customer satisfaction ratings and a 96% claim approval rate. However, reliability can also be subjective based on individual experiences, so it's advisable to read customer reviews and compare different providers.

3. Who is best for travel insurance?

The best provider for travel insurance can vary based on individual travel needs and preferences. For Australian residents, Fast Cover, Cover-More, and 1Cover are among the top choices, each offering unique features and coverage options. Fast Cover is noted for its tailored policies and high customer satisfaction, while 1Cover is known for its comprehensive coverage and emergency assistance. It's essential to compare policies and consider factors like coverage extent, customer service, and ease of claim processing.

4. Is travel insurance worth it for Australia?

Yes, travel insurance is generally worth it for Australia, especially considering the unpredictable nature of travel and the potential high costs of medical care for non-residents. Insurance can cover unforeseen medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other emergencies. For international travelers, it's particularly important as they may not be covered by Australia's healthcare system. The peace of mind and financial protection it offers often outweigh the cost of the premium.

5. How much is travel insurance in Australia?

The cost of travel insurance in Australia varies based on several factors, including the length of the trip, the age of the traveler, the level of coverage desired, and any additional riders or coverage for specific activities. On average, travelers spent about $234 on travel insurance for trips lasting two to three weeks, as reported by Squaremouth. This cost represents approximately 6% of the average trip cost. However, prices can vary widely, so it's advisable to get quotes from multiple providers to find the best rate for your specific needs.
