What Does A Bali Trip Cost: Your 2024 Guide To Bali Holiday Prices

OK, you’ve decided to plan a Bali trip, and you’re starting to wonder how much it’s going to cost? Is Bali expensive? Or will you save money compared to other destinations?

Will foreign transaction fees eat up your savings on cheap hotels? And just how much money should you bring with you?

Well, our guide to Bali prices and costs in this popular tourist destination should make it easy to decide what you can afford when visiting Bali and how much money you should bring with you.

We’ve broken down all the major costs on this Indonesian island, and we can assure you it’s just as affordable for young backpackers as it always was. Those coming from Western countries seeking a luxurious life won’t be disappointed with the value for their money, either.

How Much Will It Be To Visit Bali?

Close up picture of Indonesian rupiah banknotes

It’s better to think in terms of setting a travel budget rather than trying to work out how much it costs to be in Bali.

Is Bali expensive? Not really. In fact, it’s often significantly cheaper than other destinations, and certainly, it’s cheaper than the average costs of living back home.

But whether you find Bali cheap or expensive depends on you – will you eat street food , local food or Western food? What sort of hotel rooms will you book? How many tourist attractions do you intend to visit? Will you stay in South Bali, Central Bali, East Bali, etc.. Prices vary all over the island.

What’s The Average Price Of Visiting Bali?

Closeup of male hands giving Indonesian Rupiah money on a dark background

According to the local tourist board’s data, most Westerners in this popular destination spend about $3,000 (USD, not AUD) during their visit to this part of Southeast Asia for a fortnight.

This number does not include the cost of flights but does include all the other costs that people incur, from beach clubs , to travel costs, to eating in local restaurants, swimming in infinity pools, etc.

However, it’s easy to spend two weeks in Bali for half the price and still have a great time. So, please don’t get too hung up on an average price, it’s not a particularly useful piece of data.

How Much Will Flights To Bali Be?

Singapore Airlines

The cheapest flights to Bali tend to be from other parts of Southeast Asia and from Australia. This shouldn’t come as any particular surprise given that they are the closest places to fly to Indonesia from.

A round trip from Sydney can be as little as AUD 400, and it’s a bit cheaper to fly from Melbourne.

Whereas if you’re flying from London, a round trip is going to cost about 800 GBP.

And from Los Angeles or another American destination, getting to this part of Southeast Asia is going to cost $1,500 or so, round trip.

Because of this huge variance in flight costs, we tend to leave flights as a separate item outside of the overall cost of the holiday.

After all, hotel costs, food costs, etc., don’t vary much at all in Bali – the prices you pay are the same prices that other people will pay.

How Much Are Other Transportation Costs?

taxi driver giving thumb up 2023 11 27 05 03 54 utc

This really depends on you, some hotels, for example, will provide a private transfer from the international airport to your hotel room for free. Whereas others will charge $20 (or more for this service).

Renting a scooter will cost you $5 a day, but is risking your life on Bali’s roads really cost-effective? We’re not so sure.

Renting a car with a driver will come in at around $50 a day, and you can use local ride-share apps like Grab and Gojek to pay for taxis on a per-ride basis.

There are also public transport options in some cities, and public transportation costs are very low. You won’t spend a fortune on a bus fare, for example.

However, if you want local transportation to some of the other islands, you will need to pay for that, and the costs will vary depending on your final destination and the quality of your transport options. We’ve not included this expense because it can be next to nothing, or it could be quite substantial.

That means you can spend as little as $0 a day (assuming you stay within walking distance of your resort and didn’t pay for the hotel transfer service) to $50 a day.

How Much Will Accommodation Costs Be?

Much depends on your travel style as to how much you’re going to spend on accommodation in Bali .

Dorm Vs Private Room

The first choice you’re going to face is if you’re looking for the cheapest of options. Are you willing to stay in a dorm, or do you need at least a double room all to yourself?

You can find a dorm for $10 a night and a cheap-ish room for $20+ a night.

That means you could spend as little as $10 a night for two weeks on accommodation.

Budget Vs Mid-Range Vs Luxury Vs Ultra-Luxury

However, there is really no maximum spend on accommodation either. If you take a look at the hotel transfers at Denpasar Airport , you will quickly see just how many hotels are based in Bali.

All the world’s biggest name brands are represented on the island, and while a dorm might be $10 a night, a budget room $20 a night, a mid-range can quickly hit $50-$60, a luxury resort might be $300+ a night, and the ultra-luxury resorts (such as Mandapa by The Ritz-Carlton) can cost more than $1,000 a night!

We’re going to assume, however, that if you’re budgeting for your Bali holiday , you probably aren’t going to be spending \$1,000 or more a night on your hotel room.

Most people will have private rooms, of course, but most won’t spend a fortune on them.

We’ll keep things reasonable to give you a good estimate of how much you need at the end.

$50 a night would be good for a mid-range budget and $20 for a tighter budget. If you want better prices when you find accommodation in Bali , try to book during the off-season. Most places offer lower prices at this time of year.

How Much Will Food Be?

10 must try balinese foods and local delights by finns bali

Street food in Bali is ridiculously cheap. It’s not hard to find a meal here on most of the island for $1 from a street vendor, though in major cities, it might be a little more.

But as with hotel rooms, there are many different prices of food in Bali depending on how much you want to spend.

Warungs Vs Fine Dining

If you love the idea of eating Balinese food throughout your trip, then the local warungs (restaurants) are awesome.

You can easily find dishes for as little as $2, and they tend to be wholesome and use local ingredients.

If you want something a bit more like home, then you can find that too, and there are plenty of cafes and mid-range restaurants offering everything from vegan fare to pizzas and burgers.

You can spend as much as you like in places like this, but $10-$20 per person is probably about right for most people.

Then, there’s fine dining , and the prices in Bali for fine dining are a bargain, but they are still pretty stiff, too.

You can easily spend $300+ on a fine dining meal and much, much more if you start throwing in top-notch international wines over and over above the meal.

However, we’d say that \$15-\$20 a day is probably enough for food but leave some room for a splurge day or two, like when you visit FINNS Beach Club and enjoy different dishes from all seven of their kitchens!

How Much Is A Beer In Bali?

full glass of beer 2023 11 27 05 02 45 utc

The local beer, Bintang, comes in small and large bottles. The small one usually sells for about 30,000 IDR ($2), and the bigger one for 55,000 IDR ($3.50).

That means drinking beer is pretty cheap compared to the West, and it’s a good thing because cold beer is something many of us need in Bali’s heat.

Cocktails Cost More

20170728 gallery cocktail frozen berry margarita

However, cocktails are more expensive than beer. Substantially so, in fact.

If you want to keep your cocktail spending in check – look out for the happy hours in bars throughout Bali, then you will get two for one on select cocktails, which makes them much better value.

A cocktail will normally cost around 150,000-200,000 IDR (roughly $8-$12).

We won’t add alcohol to the budget because it’s not a necessity, but if you want to add alcohol, now you have an idea of how much to allocate for it.

Soft drinks are very cheap, however, and generally speaking, you won’t need to pay more than $1 for one at a stall or market. The fair amount for these things in cafes and bars tends to be higher because you’re paying for the setting, too.

How Much Will I Need To Tip In Bali?

Close up picture of Indonesian rupiah coins

Balinese culture is not a tipping culture , and you are not expected to tip anywhere.

Before you leave a tip, you should carefully examine the bill for a service charge (this is super common in the more heavily touristed areas) and if you see one, don’t tip. (Unless you want to tip twice, that is).

If, however, you feel that the service you have received anywhere is outstanding and you want to be generous, then a tip of 10-15% will always be welcomed.

If you go somewhere that tourists rarely if ever venture, however, you may find that a server tries to return the tip because they don’t know what tipping is.

What Should I Budget For A Fortnight In Bali?

akaya bali hotel sanur

This entirely depends on you, but we’d recommend that you bring about $1,500 – $2,000 for a good time, and this is how we came by that figure (and please remember that number does not include flight costs).

A Full Breakdown Of Costs For Budgeting In Bali

We’re going to assume that you’ve come to Bali for some fun and that you don’t want the most basic lifestyle possible and nor are you wealthy enough to spend every night sleeping on special pillows watched over by your personal butler at the Four Seasons (though if you are doing the latter, that’s awesome).

Accommodation Prices

As we said before, you can spend as little as $10 a night, but we’d recommend spending $50 and picking a nice mid-range hotel.

There’s something nice about sleeping in a comfy bed and having a free breakfast and a pool to use. Some mid-range hotels also have gyms and other cool facilities to use.

Food Prices

We think most people are going to mix this up a lot. Everyone should try some street food, warung food is awesome, but grabbing some nice meals in mid-range international restaurants is also a nice part of a holiday.

And you could always push the boat right out and go for somewhere super fancy once or twice in your time in Bali.

Say $20/day per person, and you should be able to have a great time.

Transport Costs

This is going to depend on how much of Bali you want to see, but some days will probably cost nothing as you drift to the beach from your hotel room on foot and enjoy a day in the sun.

On other days, you might spend $100 as you head off to remote parts of the island.

$20 a day is probably a reasonable budget, but $50 might be wiser if you want to travel a lot.

Activity Outlays

Female with a pink dress standing at Temple gates at Lempuyang Luhur temple in Bali

Some trips and activities cost next to nothing, others are pretty expensive. $20-$30 per person per day is a good number, which means you can have plenty of fun in Bali.

Miscellaneous

This might include alcohol or souvenir shopping, etc., and only you can work out how much you want to take for this final column on the expense sheet. It will vary dramatically from person to person.

Note:  To avoid excessive transaction fees in Bali, never allow the local vendor to translate your payment into your home currency. Always select the option on the card machine to pay in IDR.

How Much Will A Trip To Bali Cost?

It really all depends on you, but a good budget for a two-week holiday in Bali is probably around $1,500-$2,000 plus flight costs.

This won’t cover a private driver for every day or your stay, but it will cover entry fees to most attractions, trips to the rice terraces , transport costs from the international airport and around the island, etc. and a room with air conditioning.

How Much Is A 7-Day Trip To Bali? How Much Does It Cost To Go To Bali For A Week?

Again, this is down to you, and we can’t speak to the flight costs, but you can have a good time in Bali for a week from as little as $500, though we’d try to bring $1,000-$1,500 and push the boat out a little.

You could have at least a couple of great days out with that budget and do something like scuba diving with sea turtles as well as visiting FINNS.

Is $1,000 (AUD) Enough For A Week In Bali?

Yes, in fact, many digital nomads live in Bali for less than that amount each month! It all depends on how you spend your money as to how much of a good time you have on that amount.

How Much Spending Money Is Enough For A Week In Bali?

$500 is probably the minimum you’d want to have a good time in Bali, but you can get by with less. If you want an amazing holiday, we’d recommend about $1,000-$1,500 for a week.

How Much Money Do You Need Per Day In Bali? Is $100 A Day Enough For Bali?

You can get by with very little, $20-$30 a day, but we’d recommend at least $100 a day for a good holiday and more if you can afford it.

How Expensive Is Bali For Tourists?

You can expect to pay less in Bali for nearly everything than you would at home, assuming you’re coming from the West or Australia. However, if you want the ultra-luxurious lifestyle, you can still expect to pay a fairly substantial amount for it.

How Much Would A Meal Cost In Bali?

Anything from $1 at a street vendor to $3 in a warung in the rice terraces to $300+ in a fancy dining place in a top-end hotel.

How Do I Book The Best Value Bali Holiday?

The folks at  Bali Res Centre  have your back on this. They can help you find everything that you need at a sensible price.

Their local connections mean that they can always help you get rooms, flights, etc., that are great value for money, and their staff can steer you around any minor issues that have cropped up in Bali that aren’t on the official websites of hotels, etc.

Final Thoughts On The Cost Of Time In Bali

You can get great deals for a good time in Bali on any budget, and many people have an amazing holiday on the island without spending very much money at all.

However, if you want an ultra-luxury lifestyle and endless fancy dining, that’s here too. It’s just going to cost a bit more.

How Much Is a Trip To Bali? (Full Breakdown 2023)

Table of Contents

If you’ve been daydreaming about a trip to Bali, you’re not alone.

This Indonesian paradise island is a hugely popular destination for travelers from all over the world. But how much does it really cost to take a trip to Bali?

In this blog post, we’ll give you a realistic estimate of what you can expect to spend on a trip to Bali.

how much is a trip to bali

How Much Does It Cost to Go To Bali?

The average cost of a trip to Bali is around $3000 USD for two people for two weeks. This budget includes flights, accommodation, food, activities, and transport within Bali.

Of course, this is just an estimate and your actual costs may be higher or lower depending on your specific travel plans.

Listed below are some of the things that will affect the cost of your trip.

The 3 Top Things to Do in Bali

how much is bali

How Much Are Flights to Bali?

If you’re flying from the United States, you can expect to spend around $1,500 on return airfare. That number will vary depending on your departure city and the airlines you choose, but $1,500 is a good average.

For example, flights from New York tend to be more expensive than flights from Los Angeles. And if you’re looking to travel during peak season (generally June through August), you can expect to pay even more.

If you’re flexible with your travel dates, try to book your flights well in advance—you may be able to snag a cheaper seat.

If you’re flying from Europe or Australia, your airfare will be cheaper depending on your route and layovers.

For example, return flights from London to Bali start at around $700 , but can go up to $1500+ if you’re looking for a more direct route.

accommodation in bali

How Much is Accommodation in Bali?

There are accommodation options for every budget in Bali.

For example, hostels start at around $15 USD per night while luxury hotels can cost upwards of $300 USD per night. There are also plenty of mid-range and budget hotels starting at $20-50 per night.

Airbnbs are a popular option and prices start at around $50 USD per night.

The standard of accommodation you can get for under $100 a night is truly incredible, so in our opinion, there is no need to spend the big bucks.

If you’re traveling on a tight budget, we recommend staying in hostels or Airbnbs so that you can save money on accommodation and use that extra cash to do more activities or try more local food!

bali street food warung

How Much is Food in Bali?

Eating out in Bali is relatively inexpensive.

The cost of food in Bali definitely depends on where you eat.

Street food is incredibly cheap (you can get a meal for as little as $1 USD!) while sit-down restaurants tend to be more expensive (a meal for two with drinks can easily cost $30 USD or more).

Our advice is to try as much street food as possible—it’s delicious and one of the best ways to experience Balinese culture!

You can also try a Balinese cooking class to get a real understanding of the local flavors.

how much is a beer

How Much is Beer in Bali?

You’ll be pleased to know that beer is also relatively cheap in Bali.

A small bottle of Bintang, the Indonesian beer, will be around 30,000 IDR in a restaurant, which is roughly $2.

The larger bottle of Bintang, for the heavyweights among us, will usually set you back 55,000 IDR, or roughly $3.50.

Of course, don’t forget to factor in the cost of cocktails!

A cocktail at a bar or nightclub will set you back around $8-$10 on average.

tirta empul water temple in bali

How Much Are Activities in Bali?

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy during your trip to Bali.

Many of them are free, like spending time at the beach, exploring the ricefields around Ubud or going on some of the island’s scenic hikes.

Most sights that require an entrance fee, for example the Ubud Monkey Forest , are relatively inexpensive – you will not spend more than $10 USD for an entry ticket.

If you want to do something more unique like the ATVs around Mount Batur , or try scuba diving in Bali , be prepared to spend around $50-$100 per day for each activity.

scooter around bali

How Much Is Transport in Bali?

Getting around Bali is relatively cheap and easy – the most popular way to get around is by scooter which you can rent for as little as $5 USD per day.

You can also take public buses which only cost a few dollars per journey or hire a private driver for about $50 USD per day.

Grab and Gojek are also great apps for shorter distances, and they work exactly the same as Uber. Just be careful, as sometimes the drivers will not be able to pick you up in certain areas (close to the tourist beaches, for example).

how much to tip in bali

How Much to Tip in Bali?

Tipping is generally not expected in Bali.

However, if you feel that the service you have been offered is worthy of a tip, then please feel free to add 10-15%.

A lot of the restaurants in the more touristy spots, such as Canggu or Seminyak, will already include a service charge in the bill – so make sure to check if you don’t wish to tip twice.

how much to budget for bali

How Much to Budget For Two Weeks in Bali?

On top of flights, if you budget around $100 per day for your trip to Bali it would be more than enough.

This amount would enable you to stay in a mid-range hotel, eat out for every meal and enjoy some of the island’s best activities.

Therefore, $1500 per person (plus flights) would be plenty for two weeks in Bali.

bali budget breakdown

Bali Budget Breakdown

Accommodation: Budget hotels can be found for as little as $10 per night, while a room in a midrange hotel or resort will be $30-$50 per night. Luxury hotels can be upwards of $300.

Food: Local food is very affordable, with meals costing as little as $2-$3. Western food is more expensive, with main courses starting at around $10.

Transport: A taxi from the airport to Ubud, for example, will cost around $40. A day of sightseeing using taxis and private drivers can easily come to $100+.

Activities: You could pay anything from $10 to $50 per activity, depending on what you’re doing. Most days it will be the lower end of that scale.

As you can see from this breakdown, a trip to Bali doesn’t have to be outrageously expensive – you can definitely visit on a tight budget if you’re careful with your spending!

There are plenty of ways to save money without sacrificing quality or experiences either.

You might want to update that budget a bit. I’m flying there in April and it cost me $2962.24 (to be exact). This is from Boise ID, USA, standard fair. That alone blows your budget. Thanks for all the information though. I’m looking forward to the trip.

Yes, please update your budget. Economy class is $2,000 from Phoenix to Bali in September. I opted for Premium Economy, not an extravagant upgrade but for the length of the flight – it will definitely be more comfortable. This pushed the ticket to $3,400.

I’m not sure what websites are you guys using to book tickets but mine was $695 The itinerary is LA- Tokyo- Seoul- Manila- Puerto princesa (for el Nido) -back to Manila- Bali and leaving in 2 weeks.

Wow where did you book?

Yeah sorta same thread as above – are you sure this cost breakdown includes flights because it doesn’t seem accurate

I’ll chime in. Cheapest airfares from NY are $1752. Rest of costs have to be at least another $1000 for 2 weeks WITH activities .

I plan to take my husband to Bali in December of 2025 to celebrate his retirement! Ive priced an Airbnb for 15 days which is super affordable and contacted the host for info on how to lock the price in. We plan to take 2 additonal couples with us which fares out to about $1425.00 per couple. After pricing flights for 2, the cheapest was $1500 for economy but will more than likely have to upgrade as my husband is 6’6! I am so hoping that I can make this trip a reality (the current economy has me on edge).

The Cost of a Trip to Bali

A journey to Bali will usually cost from $26 to $227 for an individual and $52 to $454 for two people. The mid-range tends to hover around $73 (Rp1,176,938) per person daily, as calculated from our travel cost data from fellow travelers covering food, accommodation, sightseeing, and local transportation expenses. This is a fairly wide price range, and your individual expenses will vary by the level of luxury and travel style that you choose. For those seeking a balance between comfort and budget, booking standard accommodation and eating at typical restaurants, your expenses will be close to this calculated average. Read on for a detailed breakdown of travel expenses by category and a comprehensive overview of accommodation and activity costs tailored to your visit.

Budget travelers to Bali often spend around $26 per day. This usually includes a stay at a hostel and meals at affordable restaurants around town. Many budget travelers also prefer free activities over those that cost too much money. If you have a bit more money to spend, you should budget around $73 (Rp1,176,938) per day. This average includes a mid-range hotel and more meals in restaurants, along with a higher budget for entertainment and activities. Luxury travelers should plan to spend around $227 a day which includes higher-end accommodations, restaurants, tours, and activities. For more details, see our average travel costs for Bali here .

Travelers spend, on average, $220 per person on a three-day trip to Bali. This includes sightseeing, hotels, food, and local transportation. You can stick close to this average price by staying at mid-range hotels and eating at mid-level restaurants, while also paying for some entry tickets to popular attractions. If you wish to travel cheaper, it's possible to find lower-cost accommodations, eat at less expenive restaurants, and find more free activities. It's also common for many visitors to have a much higher travel budget, as many high-end hotels and restaurants can be found around town.

How much does a five day trip to Bali cost?

With five days in Bali, you can expect to spend about $367 total, not including transportation to and from the city. • Consider bicycle or scooter rentals: Opt for cheaper modes of transportation, such as bicycles or scooters, to explore the island.
  • Share taxi rides: If you prefer taxis, consider sharing rides with other travelers to split the cost.
  • Explore less touristy areas: Avoiding the most popular tourist areas can often lead to lower prices and a more authentic experience.
  • Dine at local warungs: Enjoy delicious and affordable Balinese cuisine at local warungs (small, inexpensive restaurants).
  • Shop at fresh food markets: Instead of supermarkets, visit fresh food markets to find affordable fruits and vegetables.
  • Plan and book accommodations in advance: During busy periods, ensure you plan and book your accommodations well in advance to secure favorable prices.

By following these tips, you can make your Bali vacation cost more affordable and still have an incredible experience on this enchanting island.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?

Faraway Worlds

Faraway Worlds

  • Bali travel budget

If you’re planning on travelling to Bali, you’re probably wondering how much you need to budget for your trip. While your travel costs will depend on your travel style, generally speaking Bali is perfect for a budget trip.

Accommodation costs are generally affordable and food and drinks are very cheap. Many of Bali’s best attractions are very affordable or even free and, while some activities could set you back a fair amount, there’s plenty to do at lower price points too.

How much should I budget for a trip to Bali?

A reasonable budget for two for a week in Bali is around IDR 17,013,376 .

The above cost is based on staying in good, mid-range accommodation and having a few meals out per week, while preparing some yourself . It makes allowances for a couple of sightseeing activities, but doesn’t take into account expensive activities like adventure sports or private tours.

Generally speaking, the longer you travel, the cheaper it costs per day, while fly-in, fly-out trips can be more expensive.

How much does accommodation cost?

You can expect to spend between IDR 910,000-IDR 1,800,000 a night, per couple, on accommodation in Bali. This will get you a private room with your own bathroom in a 3-4-star hotel or apartment rental.

Hostels are, of course, cheaper, but a private room with a shared bathroom will still cost around IDR 400,000 per night. A bed in a dorm room also averages around IDR 150,000 per night, per person, although there are definitely cheaper options out there.

Accommodation prices in Bali are rising again as the tourism industry recovers, however you may still be able to find some good deals at the moment. While accommodation in Bali isn't as cheap as some Asian countries, the value is generally very good and you can have a five-star experience on a mid-range budget. There are also many luxury options that are can reach far beyond the above prices.

Read our guide on where to stay in Bali to find the best place to base yourself during your visit.

How much should I budget for food and drinks in Bali?

Budget to spend around IDR 4,411,400 for two for a week in Bali. This assumes you’re cooking some of the time and drinking some alcohol.

If you enjoy eating out, you can expect to pay around IDR 643,000 for a nice dinner for two, including an alcoholic drink. A meal at a pub is likely to be around IDR 220,000 for two, with cheaper meals available (especially for lunch) for around IDR 57,000 each.

Assuming that you’ll be eating out some of the time, budget at least IDR 76,600 a week for groceries. If you enjoy a few drinks, you’ll need to increase this amount – beer costs around IDR 28,000 for a 500ml bottle and good bottle of wine is around IDR 326,000 , from a shop, although there are cheaper options available. Milk typically costs around IDR 23,000 for a two-litre bottle and you can expect to pay around IDR 38,600 for a cappuccino from a local café.

How much does it cost to get around Bali?

Getting around Bali is easiest with a scooter. Transport costs fluctuate depending how much you travel, but budgeting around IDR 793,000 for two per week is a good starting point. This should allow you to hire a couple of scooters. If you’re planning on doing any tours or using hop-on hop-off buses, you’ll need to up your budget a bit.

Taking taxis or hiring a driver with a car are also good options for getting around Bali, particularly if you don't want to deal with the chaotic traffic or are travelling in a larger group.

What should I expect to spend on activities?

A lot of the best things to do in Bali are free. However, there definitely are some attractions that cost money – entry fees to a museum or an art gallery are usually around IDR 144,000 - IDR 573,000 per person. If you want to do organised day trips or join smaller tour groups to learn more about some of the sites, budget around IDR 1,100,000 per activity per person.

Here are some prices for popular activities and day trips in Bali:

Mount Batur sunrise trek - USD 50

Private day trip to Ubud Monkey Forest, the rice terraces and Tanah Lot - USD 50

Tour to watch the sunset at Uluwatu Temple - USD 40

Cooking class in a local village near Ubud - USD 30

Day trip to Nusa Penida island - USD 60

Bali is a beautiful destination to visit and is a great place for a cheap trip. Cooking your own meals, carefully selecting accommodation or limiting meals out will definitely help you to reduce your travel costs. Slow travel is another great way to help your budget to stretch further, while exploring a place in more depth.

Travelling through Bali is definitely possible on a budget – just pick your priorities and compromise on the rest or consider travelling in the off-season and avoiding school holidays to cut down on costs. And, if you’re on the luxury end of the scale or wanting to treat yourself, the sky’s the limit.

Is Bali Expensive To Visit In 2024?

Is Bali Expensive To Visit In 2024?

Written by Josh Band

Posted, 22nd September 2023

Find yourself asking the question, “Is Bali Expensive?”?

It’s one of the most common questions people have before booking a trip to Bali.

Bali is a must-visit destination on many travellers’ bucket lists. If you’re in the process of planning a trip to South-East Asia, then you’re probably considering staying in Bali for a while.

The island is absolutely beautiful, and it’s not hard to see why so many couples are opting for Bali on honeymoon trips, and solo travellers are making room in their itinerary to visit the island.

With Bali looking like the destination of dreams for most travellers, it can often leave you wondering, “ Is Bali expensive? ” No one wants to leave the bank empty after a trip, right?

We host Bali group tours all throughout the year, so we consider ourselves experts when it comes to anything to do with Bali, and we know how much things cost.

So, we have created the ultimate guide with everything you need to know when budgeting a trip to beautiful Bali and give all the answers you need to figure out for yourself, “Is Bali expensive?”.

Is Bali Expensive?

It sounds obvious, but your budget for Bali will depend greatly on what you intend to do while you’re on the island, where you want to stay and how much you’re willing to spend on food, drink and transport.

Thankfully, Bali’s tourism industry is very open, and there is availability in most sectors to fit whatever budget you’d like.

Hardcore backpackers will typically spend $10-20 per day in Bali. This includes staying in hostels, eating street food, doing free activities, etc.

If you are on a medium budget, then you can certainly get away with spending around $50 per day, but if you’d prefer to have a luxurious stay, then you’ll naturally need a bigger budget than that.

The cost of living in Bali is quite low. It isn’t a very rich region, but the economy has seen a huge increase in recent years from tourism. Locals live on around $750-$2,000 per month, so it is very achievable to get by on a budget when visiting the island.

Costs for two people for two weeks average at around $3,000 for the entire trip. But every traveller is different, and how you choose to spend your time and money will greatly affect your budget.

An aerial shot of Bali.

Finding the best deals for flights , accommodation, and activities is a great way to reduce your costs. Making sure you do plenty of research on prices is the best way to save money.

Another great way to save money is by booking one of our tours . We’ve visited Bali hundreds of times collectively, and we know all the best areas to visit and how to make the most of your money.

Not to mention that the cost of activities like taking a boat tour in Lovina or taking a cooking class in Ubud are all included in our price. And we even provide some meals too!

To summarise, budget between $20 and $200+ per person per day, depending on how you like to travel. Bali is such a beautiful island and deserves to be enjoyed no matter your budget.

Price of Food in Bali

As with every country, food prices in Bali vary significantly, depending on where and what you eat. If you’re on a tight budget, then you can certainly get away with spending less than $10 a day in total.

Local and street food price s can be as low as $2-$4 for a decently sized portion. And don’t believe all the negative stigma around Southeast Asian street food; you aren’t guaranteed to get food poisoning .

If you’re looking for something a bit more familiar and something that you know that you’ll like, then prices do rise slightly. Typical Western foods like fries or battered chicken will set you back around $5-$8 per dish.

If you’ve time for a sit-down meal in a nice restaurant, it will fit nicely into any budget. You can expect to pay anywhere from $15-$20 for a meal – rising to $20-$30 if you want to get alcoholic drinks like wine or cocktails.

Finding healthy foods while travelling can often be neglected by many travellers. When you need a bit of pick-me-up or something with some more vitamins and minerals, then typical options are smoothie (perfect for breakfast) and poke bowls.

They’re two of the best traditional Bali foods . Smoothie bowls cost around $4-$6, while poke bowls are slightly more expensive at $5-$7.

Price of Drinks in Bali

Staying hydrated while on the go is very important – particularly in hot destinations like Bali. While bottled water (side note- you can’t drink tap water in Bali ) should also be your go-to method of hydration, treating yourself to an alcoholic beverage here and there is the perfect thing to help you relax after a long day of exploring.

As with most countries, you’ll have to pay more for alcohol in restaurants and bars than if you were to buy bottles yourself from stores. Beers and ciders are far cheaper in Bali than wines and cocktails, so you often get more for your money.

A good beer in a restaurant with your meal will likely set you back $1.50-$3, which is very affordable and unlike anything you’d find in the West. If you head to a local store to buy beer yourself, then you’ll likely only have to spend $1-$2 per bottle.

A picture of some drinks by the sea in Bali. Is Bali expensive? Alcohol is a big factor.

Cocktails in Bali are delicious – they are some of the best around, and the attention to detail is incredible. They are beautifully presented no matter the price and are a great, refreshing post-dinner drink.

The only downside is that cocktails are the most expensive of all the alcoholic drinks in Bali (though, to be fair, this is the same in most places). They typically cost around $4-$8 but are worth the price.

Wine prices vary the most. Glasses in restaurants tend to cost around $4-$6, and if you want to buy the bottle, then the price will depend on where in the world the wine is from. Local bottles of wine will cost about $15, while imported ones can cost upwards of $30.

Price of Transport in Bali

Getting around Bali is really easy, especially if you book one of our guided Bali tours 😉.

Nonetheless, there are so many transport options available, and locals are always willing to help you find your way about.

Taxi fares in Bali can vary massively. Transfers from the airport to Ubud will cost approximately $30-$40, for example. Be sure to always check the price with your driver before getting in, as some drivers will take advantage of travellers and push the price upwards if you seem oblivious.

Taxi companies Grab and GO-JEK are popular in this part of the world. They are the equivalent of Uber in Bali. If you’re travelling around Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak Canggu or any of the popular spots in Bali then you’re in luck, as the companies have drivers in these areas.

Most travellers will likely take the ferry to the Gili islands at some point during their trip. Transfers on the ferry cost between $30-$60 for a one-way ticket . We told you that our tours are a great way to save money!

A picture of motorbikes in Bali with a sign saying "For Rent".

Renting a scooter or motorbike while in Bali is extremely common and popular. And it’s a cheap mode of transport too!

Most rental companies will do daily and weekly rates so you can make the most of your money. Daily rental fees are between $3 and $10, whereas for the week you can expect to spend $20-$50.

Car rental is another good option for exploring Bali. Costs are around $30-$50 per day, which is not too bad compared to other South-East Asian destinations.

Please note that if you’re planning on renting a bike or car on your trip then an international driving licence is required. It’s a good idea to check with your travel insurance company that you’re covered for driving these vehicles while abroad too - you don’t want to end up out of pocket if you wind up injured.

Please note that if you’re planning on renting a bike or car on your trip then an international driving licence is required. It’s a good idea to check with your travel insurance company that you’re covered for driving these vehicles while abroad too – you don’t want to end up out of pocket if you wind up injured.

You also need to be aware of scams when renting motorbikes, scooters and cars. Many companies will try to catch you out with extortionate prices or claim that there is damage to the vehicle that you didn’t cause.

The best way around the latter is to take photos from every angle of the bike or car – particularly any scratches or dents – as soon as it is given to you so that you can prove it wasn’t your fault.

Price of Accommodation in Bali

Bali has a huge range of accommodation options to suit every budget; whether you want a bed in a hostel or a luxurious villa with a pool, Bali has you covered.

On the cheapest end of the scale, hostels can be as lowly priced as $7-$15 per night. However, you are sacrificing the modern comforts you’ll be used to in most European and American hostels.

Such cheap hostels make their money by offering quite low-quality rooms – but you get what you pay for, after all! Typical hostels will allow for very limited private space. Dorm-style rooms are the norm, with up to 30 bunk beds per room in some areas. You’ll find it very difficult to find a hostel offering a private bathroom in Bali – most will be shared bathroom areas.

Hotel stays are preferable to travellers who like a bit more privacy without destroying their life savings. You can get a night in a basic hotel for around $30-$50.

Airbnb has really taken off in Bali in recent years, and there are lots of low-cost, good-quality apartments available on the island. A decent budget Airbnb will cost only $30-$50 per night (plus a service and cleaning charge- can we go back to 2019 Airbnb ?!).

Or, if you’re looking for somewhere more luxurious and want the complete Bali experience of those TikToks and videos about Bali, private villas also available on Airbnb can cost anywhere from $50 per night to $3000. They’re pricey, but some of them are definitely worth it. Bali is the perfect place to spend out on some luxury.

A drone shot of a villa in Bali with a pool. Villas are expensive and if you stay in one, the answer to "Is Bali expensive?" is yes.

Price of Activities in Bali

The number of activities available in Bali is endless. There is something for everyone on the island, with water activities and hiking trips being some of the most popular.

Some of the best activities in Bali are actually free. Hiking waterfall routes, visiting local markets or attending religious and cultural shows are some of the best free activities that Bali has to offer, and they’re enjoyable too! Remember always to travel responsibly and respect the environment.

If you’re looking for an overall budget for activities, putting aside $10-$50 per experience is a good estimate. Most activities will be on the lower end of the scale, but it’s better to over budget than under.

One of the most popular things to do in Bali, for example, is to visit Uluwatu Temple. It’s one of the reasons to visit Uluwatu . The temple’s entrance fee is 30,000 IDR which is equivalent to just under $2.

Another popular activity which has a very small entrance fee is visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest. Travellers can expect to pay around $3 to gain entry into the forest park, and it is an unforgettable way to spend a day near Ubud.

A picture of someone looling at a waterfall in Bali.

Are flights to Bali expensive?

Flights to Bali are very dependent on where you are flying from and which airline you choose to travel with. Prices also vary greatly depending on the time of year that your trip is taking place. The cheapest month to fly to Bali is February, as it is peak rainy season and tourism is low. Though we recommend visiting Bali all year round- there’s no bad time to visit Bali .

Typically, American travellers can expect to pay around $1,500 for their flights to and from Bali, with a layover halfway through the journey. Make sure to use any air miles you might have clocked up on an account to help with the cost of the journey.

European travellers can expect costs of around $1,100 for return flights to Bali when booked in advance. Often it is cheaper to book flights separately, with one-way tickets often dipping to as low as $300 in off-peak season.

Travelling to another country with a larger airport is also a way around huge costs … Amsterdam Schiphol or London Heathrow, for example, are just two airports that often have cheaper and more direct flights to Bali.

Travelling from Australia costs around $400 for a one-way flight. The cheapest flights from the country of course, are from Perth in the north, whereas flying from Melbourne or Sydney will have one-way prices closer to $600. In total, travellers can expect to pay around $1,100 on flights to and from Australia.

If you’re coming from a country we haven’t explicitly mentioned, we suggest using Skyscanner to find the best flight deals to get to Bali.

Bali trip cost –  Arriving in Bali, Indonesia

Bali only has one airport on the entire Island, it’s located in the South of Bali in the city of Denpasar. Ngurah Rai International Airport receives international flights from big carriers and also low-cost airlines. Bali flight costs can vary greatly depending on where you are coming from, dates and airline. This is one of the costs of traveling to Bali that changes according to each traveler.

We recommend using Skyscanner or Kiwi.com to find the best flight deals to Bali. For those traveling to Bali on a budget, have a look at flights to Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, and from there a low-cost flight to Bali. You might end up stretching your Bali trip budget.

Arriving at Bali airport can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. The immigration lines can be long and once you exit the airport you are offered transport from hundreds of people trying to get your business. It’s from here that we can start breaking down the travel prices in Bali and how you can use your money wisely.

For luxury travelers we recommend investing in the VIP Immigration Fast-Track Service , it costs around 700,000 Rp (USD 48) per person. Your host will meet you right after you land and guide you to a private lounge for refreshments while you skip the immigration queue. The host will collect the luggage for you.

You can also book a transfer to your accommodation in Bali. You will be escorted out to your car without any lining up or juggling with your luggage. For example, private transfers from Bali Airport to Seminyak start from 200,000 Rp (USD 15) per car. The price of transfers from Bali Airport to Ubud are around 500,000 Rp (USD 34) per car. Bali airport transfer costs can go up for more luxury vehicles.

If you want to keep your Bali vacation cost down, we recommend downloading the GRAB app  before flying to Bali (best option) or when you arrive at Bali Airport and be able to connect to the free WIFI. Sign up and book your ride online. A GRAB taxi from Bali Airport to Seminyak costs around 150,000 Rp (USD 10) per car. A GRAB taxi from the airport to Ubud around 300,000 Rp (USD 20). This is one of the cheapest ways to get around Bali. You can order both motorcycle rides and car rides, the payment can be with cash or by connecting a credit card to your GRAB account.

To travel to other islands in Indonesia you can search and book your tickets on Bookaway.

A Bali scooter ride through rice fields. This article will provide all information travelers need about getting around Bali and Bali activities.

Cost of getting around Bali – bike rentals and taxi prices

Depending on when you travel to Bali the traffic can become quite intense in certain areas. This is for sure something to consider when planning where to stay in Bali and how to get around. The quickest and cheapest way to get around Bali is by motorbike/scooter. You can rent bikes everywhere all over the island for a small daily fee. Bali motorbike rental prices are around  60,000 Rp (USD 4) per day for the small bikes.

We only recommend renting a bike in Bali if you are an experienced and licensed rider. If you are not fully internationally licensed to ride a motorcycle, even if you aren’t pulled up by the police for a license check, your travel insurance won’t cover you if you are involved in an accident. We see this all too often, and medical care for foreigners is not cheap in Bali! By using the GRAB app and booking a GRAB rider to take you on trips, you can still enjoy the speed and freedom of riding a bike through traffic, without risking your safety.

Talking about travel insurance, don’t forget to buy yours before traveling to Bali! We use World Nomads and SafetyWing . Just click on the name of the company and book your insurance now. If you need more information, read our Travel Insurance Guide here .

So let’s talk about Bali taxi prices. A GRAB bike starts as little as 10,000 Rp (USD 0.70) per trip. The price for a GRAB car for short distances starts at 16,000 Rp (USD 1) per trip. For longer GRAB car trips, for example, Seminyak to Uluwatu or Ubud to Sanur, the cost is around 150,000 Rp (USD 10). GRAB cars and bike rides are a cheap way to get around the island. Transportation is an expense you can’t avoid on your Bali trip cost unless you will not leave your hotel area, which is a pity as there are so many incredible places to go in Bali.

If you are on a luxury vacation in Bali then we recommend booking a driver and car for your stay. Your driver will stand-by each day and you simply send a WhatsApp message each time you want to be picked up/dropped off. Hiring a private drive in Bali cost around 650,000 Rp (USD 45) per day in a regular vehicle, you can get more luxury vehicles for a higher price.

The bonus of having the same driver during your stay in Bali is that these drivers are also guides and can explain different areas and different parts to the island to you. They can also recommend where to eat in Bali, shop and arrange all of your activities for you too! Vehicles range in luxury levels, depending on how much you want to spend in Bali and how fancy you wish to travel.

A Balinese table with a mix of typical dishes. If traditional Bali food is what you are searching for, this article will help you find all the best options.

Where to eat in Bali – food and alcohol prices

Bali is home of amazing foodie experiences, right from street food to the most exquisite degustation menus you will find anywhere in the world. Indonesian food is full of flavor and known to be spicy, if you are not a spice lover it’s important to let the staff know before ordering. As its taste, Bali food prices can satisfy any traveler and pockets too.

When traveling on a budget we recommend checking out Bali street food scenes where you can get amazing meals like nasi goreng (fried rice with meat and egg) for as little as 15,000Rp (USD 1). You will see street food being prepared and sold on carts and you can also visit the many small warungs (warung means local restaurant), where they all specialize in different dishes.

Eating from the street vendors and in the warungs is perfect for those traveling in Bali on a budget, you will still have amazing food experiences, but without a high price tag.

If you are a foodie and traveling in luxury you are spoiled for choice in Bali. For the past 10 years some of the best chefs from all over the world have been setting up restaurants in Bali. Whether you are indulging in one of the many five star brunches offered across the luxury resorts every Sunday, or trying some of the degustation menus at high end restaurants, the only disappointment you will experience is not being able to fit in all of the fabulous foodie on offer.

Here is a quick round-up of Bali food cost. Mid-range restaurants in Bali serve delicious meals from between 50,000 Rp to 150,000 Rp (USD 3.50 to USD 10 )per dish. The best way to experience fine dining is via the many Sunday Brunch options, these range between 400,000 Rp to 800,000 Rp (USD 2.75 to USD 55) per person and often bottomless alcoholic drinks packages can be added for between 500,000 Rp to 1,000,000 Rp (USD 34 to USD 70) per person also.

A full top of the range food experience in Bali can cost as little as 1,200,000 Rp (USD 83) per person which often includes 8+ courses and some drinks!

Talking about drinks, Bali alcohol prices can vary a lot depending on where you are buying. Supermarkets offer the best prices, of course. Bali beer prices are between 25,000 Rp to 35,000 Rp (USD 1.70 to USD 2.40) for local brands. If you fancy an imported beer then the prices are a bit higher. Soft drinks and water prices in Bali are 20,000 Rp and 15,000 Rp (USD 1.40 and USD 1) respectively.

Apart from the affordable prices, another good thing about Bali food scene is that most of the restaurants are well accustomed to catering to food requests such as gluten-free, vegan, etc.

Shopping prices in Bali – Where to shop and how to save

The Balinese are incredible Artisans and have many skills. There are wood carvers, painters, silversmiths, tailors and more. The good news is that you can shop on any budget in Bali.

The many markets in Bali are the perfect place for someone on a tight budget to get their shopping fix. You will need to haggle to get a good price, but shopping in Bali markets can be super cheap and a lot of fun.

You can get everything from clothing, homewares, imitation designer goods, leather pieces and more. T-shirts, shorts and sunglasses can be purchased for around 30,000 Rp to 50,000 Rp (USD 2 to USD 3.50) each, and small souvenirs start at just 10,000 Rp (USD 0.70).

The boutiques and galleries in Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud are the perfect places for those who are not worried about Bali shopping prices and want to put their hands on the finest arts, jewellery and homeware.  You’ll find many luxurious items, incredible fashion and unique pieces of art at those shops. How to travel Bali on a Budget

A Bali trip really doesn’t have to be expensive. Especially if you are planning an individual journey, you can save a whole lot of money. After learning how much we spent in Bali in the previous section, we’d like to give you a closer look at how we managed to travel Bali on the cheap and how you can do it, too with a few easy travel tips in this section of this article.

General Budget tip for traveling Bali – Bargain but don’t go too far

In Indonesian culture, bargaining over the price is well anchored and totally normal. As a result, the first price mentioned is usually much higher than the actual price the seller expects. Even if you are not practiced in negotiating, you will get the hang of it very quickly. Just say a price that’s lower than what you’re actually willing to pay. So you can get closer and closer to each other’s price and end up in the middle at a price that you are both happy with.

But please do not overdo it with the bargaining. Many locals are reliant on the money the tourists bring and, what for us may be just a few cents, for them, it can already make a huge difference. In particular, in places such as supermarkets or hotels shouldn’t be negotiated about the prices as they are fixed, just as you probably would never try to negotiate the price at your supermarket back home.

Extra tip: There are quite some tourist scams in Bali , and traders often try to overcharge tourists. So try to find out in advance how much you should pay for the product or service. You can do this, for example on the Internet or simply by asking at your accommodation.

Pura Lempuyang Temple in Bali, Couple holding hands, Bali on a budget

On such a popular island like Bali, you might think that public transport is well developed and easy to use. But the reality is not that easy. We had to learn about this already on arrival at Bali’s port after our passage from the neighboring island of Java. Although buses run from here to the (for tourists) most important places, such as Denpasar, Ubud, and Kuta, however, there are no fixed prices. (Theoretically, there are, but it is impossible to find someone willing to take a tourist to the actual prices.)

In many places in Bali, the transport companies have merged into a kind of mafia to raise prices for tourists. Even with a group of 8 people reaching Bali, it took us a whopping 30 minutes to negotiate a price with our bus driver (we still paid far more than the actual price). Although, as a tourist, you usually pay more than the locals, public transport prices are still relatively low compared to western transport costs.

Bali Budget Tip: For some connections, you can also book your tickets online. This way, you can avoid being overcharged or scammed for your ticket. Make sure, however, that you book your ticket on a trustworthy site, as there are also some scam sites. I usually book my tickets online via .

Bali Budget Tip 2: Before buying your ticket, check on the Internet about your bus ticket’s actual price. Let the bus driver know that you are aware of the actual price and try not to pay much more than the locals.

Rent a Scooter in Bali

A scooter THE means of transport in Bali. Although the roads in Bali are partly well developed and safe, traffic here is anything but quiet. Especially in the rainy season, accidents are more frequent. Only drive if you really feel confident to do so. Even better if you are already an experienced scooter driver. Note, above all, that there is left-hand traffic in Indonesia. The prices for scooter rental in Bali are usually quite affordable, and so you can rent your scooter for about 50,000 – 75,000 IDR (about 3 – 5 €) a day. Otherwise, there is still the possibility to order a scooter taxi via Uber.

If you want to visit more remote places in Bali (If you follow our Bali Itinerary 10 days , you will probably want to do so), you will soon realize that there are relatively few buses on the island. For this reason, sometimes you don’t have a chance but to take a taxi if you don’t want to drive yourself. Here you have to compare prices and negotiate. Find out online about the average fare for your trip so that you get an idea of what you should pay for it.

You’ll probably quickly find that it seems like every second person in Bali is a part-time taxi driver and offers you a ride. You might not want to agree to the very first person you talk to, but to talk to different people and compare prices. If you are looking for a taxi with a taximeter, you should only take the official Bluebird taxis . (You can also download the Bluebird app, which will allow you to call a taxi at any time.)

Bali Taxi Budget Tip: Do you see other travelers looking for a taxi as well? Why not just share the taxi? This will save you a lot of money, and maybe you will even make some new friends or travel companions along the way.

Grab and Go-Jek

Grab and Go-Jek are the Asian version of Uber and work on the same principle. Anyone who has ever been to Indonesia will realize that it is not that easy to organize a Grab taxi. Since Grab is prohibited in most touristy areas, it is almost impossible for a foreigner to find a ride from there via the platform. Even though some drivers accept your request, that does not mean that they actually turn up. Often they cancel the job after a few minutes. However, other drivers who take the risk of taking you with them write you a private message claiming far more money than the app set.

Cheap Flights to Bali

Those traveling to Bali will most likely not be able to avoid taking a flight. It is important to book your flight on time and to compare prices. For that, I prefer to use flight comparison sites like .

Food in Bali

Bali food, meat on a stick, Indonesian cousine

Avoid Tourist Restaurants

I am only too happy to remember the incredibly delicious food in Indonesia. Those who previously traveled to other islands of the country, such as Java, shouldn’t hope to find these low prices in Bali. At no other location we visited in Indonesia, we could see such a huge difference in price between tourist restaurants and local restaurants ( warungs ).

In some parts of Bali, such as Ubud or Kuta (although we can not recommend a visit to Kuta unless you are looking to party), it is not that easy to find a restaurant without tourist prices. Luckily, our Ubud accommodation was a bit out of the city center, so we passed a small restaurant exclusively run by locals. Here we could enjoy delicious Nasi Goreng at reasonable prices. But also, in the city center of Ubud, such restaurants can be discovered. Especially if you choose to eat from the buffet, you can save a lot.

Bali Budget Tip: Just take a look around where the locals eat and compare prices. Instead of looking directly in the tourist center, try out the side streets – because the prices can vary a lot, even between different streets.

Street food

Another way to really save a lot of money and immerse yourself further in Bali’s culture is street food. Besides the typical dishes such as Nasi Goreng, you will also find many other delicious snacks and Indonesian delicacies. For about 1 € you can already enjoy a complete meal at some places.

Refill your bottle

Some accommodations allow you to refill your bottle free of charge or at least inexpensively with fresh drinking water. With this method, you not only save money but also help the environment by avoiding plastic garbage . To do this, it makes sense to put a refillable bottle on your packing list.

This might interest you as well Your ultimate Southeast Asia Packing List

Think bigger

If there is no refilling of your water bottle offered in your accommodation and you still have to buy bottled water (please note that tap water in Bali is not suitable for drinking unfiltered!) You should refrain from using small water bottles. The bigger the bottle you buy, the less the water costs per liter. So buy the water in 1.5-liter bottles rather than in 0.5-liter bottles.

Or how about not spending money on water at all?

Yes, that’s right, you read that correctly. You can travel through Bali without buying water. So not only is your wallet spared, but you are also doing something good for the environment. The trick? Tap water! And no, the tap water in Bali is unprocessed Not (!) Drinkable. Despite everything, there is an easy way to make tap water drinkable. And with a so-called Lifestraw. (Click here for current prices and further information) This great invention disinfects and filters the water for you to make it drinkable.

Entrance Fee & Activities

Temples in Bali, Ubud, Budget for entrance fees

In Bali, the entrance fees differ somewhat from each other. While some temples and attractions can even be visited free of charge, others have to be paid for. However, usually, the entrance fees in Bali are pretty affordable.

As you can see in our Bali Cost overview at the beginning of this post, we spent an average of € 3.22 per day for entrance fees and activities. A day we took a tour with a private driver is particularly heavy as we have put together a tour with sights that were pretty far apart from each other. However, we could minimize expenses by teaming up with two other travelers we met on the ferry from Java to Bali.

You can save money in terms of entrance fees only if you do without certain things. But that’s exactly what we don’t want to do, right? Accordingly, you can get information in advance if the entrance fees are worth their price. For example, check out our detailed Bali Itinerary or check out the reviews.

If you want to join a tour, it’s worth comparing providers and picking reliable tours. I prefer to book my tours through GetYourGuide or . You can choose between different providers and directly see the reviews and comments left by travelers who have already participated in the tours.

Accommodation

Accommodation Prices in Bali, Pool from above

The accommodations in Bali are usually a little more expensive than in less touristy parts of Indonesia, such as Java.

You can often save money by staying in a dorm instead of a private room. However, if you’re traveling with more than one person, staying in a private room might be worth it. Shared prices are usually not even that high.

Should I book in advance?

Although it is not absolutely necessary to look for a room before your arrival, you can still play it safe by booking your accommodation in advance. Especially, those who travel to Bali in the high season (especially around Christmas and New Year) should make sure to get a stay beforehand to not end up in the cheapest dump.

The big advantage of booking online is that you can access various reviews and comments from previous guests. If you use Booking.com to find accommodation, you have a wide accommodation choice in all price ranges. With various filters and the order by price function, you have great opportunities to find the perfect accommodation for you while still saving a few dollars. Most accommodations can also be canceled free of charge up to 24 hours before arrival, which will make you more flexible on your trip.

As you can see in our editions, we have not even spent so much on miscellaneous and random things. One reason is that at our favorite restaurant in Ubud, where we spent most of our time in Bali (there are simply so many things to do in Ubud ), there were free bananas to go with each order, so we spent less on fruits and juices. On the other hand, we were often traveling off the beaten track.

As you can imagine, if you followed our other travel budgets , most of our money went for ice cream and snacks. We just can’t resist. By the way, on this list, we did not include a picture, which we had bought from a local artist after we had talked to him about his culture and life in Bali for barely an hour. By the way, as I type in these lines, I look at this picture in a typical Balinese style, which is now hanging framed in our living room.

Did you know that Indonesia is the country with the most Muslims in the world? Although Bali’s population is predominantly Hindu, high taxes on alcohol apply here, which does not always make it cheap. Despite everything, you can always find relatively affordable deals, especially if you are looking for local beer. This can be found in some places for only 15,000 Rupiah (about 1 €).

The cheapest place to buy a cold beer is to go to hostels and convenience stores like Circle K. Also, for cocktails, depending on where you enjoy them, you don’t even have to spend a fortune in Bali. In some places, they cost no more than 4 €. But keep your eyes open, because in other places you pay 10 € for your cocktail. However, most restaurants and bars have their menus posted outside the door. Definitely, compare prices here!

For the Balinese, Pura Besakih, known as the Mother Temple of Bali, is an essential temple for the whole of the island and sits above the nine directional temples (kayangan jagat). Yoga retreats and centres for well-being are typical around this island. Eka Karya Botanical Garden in Bedugul was founded in 1959 and could be the youngest yet largest in the four Indonesian botanical gardens.

Thanks for the great information. It sounds like using Grab won’t be a great experience. What about GOJEK? Thanks!

thanks for your comment! I haven’t personally used GOJEK while I was in Bali but I’ve heard good experience about it by some fellow travelers.

Introduction

Are you dreaming of a tropical getaway to the beautiful island of Bali in Indonesia? From pristine beaches and lush landscapes to vibrant culture and warm hospitality, there are plenty of reasons why Bali is a popular destination for travelers around the world. However, before embarking on your adventure, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the cost involved.

In this article, we will break down the expenses associated with a 5-day trip to Bali, giving you an idea of how much budget to allocate. From flights and accommodation to transportation, dining, attractions, and miscellaneous expenses, we’ll cover it all.

It’s important to note that the cost of a trip to Bali can vary depending on several factors, such as the time of year, the level of luxury you prefer, and your personal spending habits. Our goal is to provide you with a general estimate based on average prices, so you can plan and budget accordingly.

So, if you’re ready to explore Bali without breaking the bank, let’s dive into the details and discover how much a 5-day trip to this mesmerizing island might cost.

Cost of Flights to Bali

One of the significant expenses when traveling to Bali is the cost of flights. The price of airfare can vary widely depending on factors such as the time of year, the airline you choose, and how early you book your tickets. Generally, flights to Bali from major international airports can range from $500 to $1500 per person, round trip.

If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, it’s advisable to be flexible with your travel dates and consider booking your flights well in advance. By doing so, you may be able to snag a better deal or take advantage of promotional offers. Additionally, keep an eye out for airlines that offer discounted fares or frequent flyer programs that can help reduce the cost of your flights.

Another tip to save money on flights is to be open to flying on weekdays or during off-peak seasons when prices tend to be lower. Be sure to compare prices from different airlines and use flight search engines or online travel agencies to find the best deals.

It’s also worth considering the cost of transportation to and from the airport in Bali. Taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available, and the average cost of a one-way journey from Ngurah Rai International Airport to popular tourist areas is around $10 to $20, depending on the distance.

Overall, make sure to allocate a reasonable budget for flights to Bali, as it is a significant expense. Remember to factor in any additional fees for baggage, seat selection, travel insurance, and any other optional add-ons offered by the airline.

Accommodation Expenses

When it comes to accommodation in Bali, you’ll find a wide range of options catering to different budgets and preferences. Whether you’re looking for luxury resorts, boutique hotels, budget hostels, or private villas, there’s something for everyone.

The cost of accommodation in Bali can vary significantly depending on factors such as the location, type of accommodation, facilities, and the time of year you visit. On average, budget travelers can find affordable accommodation options starting at around $20 to $50 per night. These can include simple guesthouses or budget-friendly hotels with basic amenities.

If you’re looking for more mid-range options, you can expect to pay between $50 to $150 per night for comfortable hotels or villas with additional amenities such as swimming pools, spa services, and more.

For those seeking a luxury experience, Bali is home to many world-class resorts and villas that offer top-notch facilities and services. Prices for luxury accommodation can range from $150 to well over $1000 per night, depending on the level of exclusivity, location, and amenities available.

It’s important to consider the location of your accommodation as well. Popular areas such as Seminyak, Ubud, and Kuta tend to have higher prices due to their proximity to attractions, restaurants, and nightlife. If you’re willing to stay a bit further away from the tourist hubs, you can find more affordable options.

Additionally, keep in mind that some accommodations may require you to pay a security deposit or additional fees for services such as airport transfers, breakfast, or laundry. It’s important to factor these costs into your overall accommodation budget.

Lastly, if you’re traveling with a group or family, consider booking a private villa. These can often be a cost-effective option as they offer privacy, spacious living areas, and sometimes even come with private pools. Splitting the cost among several people can make renting a villa more affordable than individual hotel rooms.

Overall, budgeting for accommodation in Bali will depend on your personal preferences and the level of luxury you desire. By researching and comparing prices in advance, you can find suitable accommodation that fits within your budget while providing comfort and convenience during your stay in Bali.

Transportation Costs

Getting around Bali is relatively affordable and offers various transportation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Here are some transportation costs to consider when planning your 5-day trip to Bali:

Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services: Taxis are a convenient mode of transportation, particularly for shorter distances or when traveling with heavy luggage. The cost of a taxi ride in Bali starts at around $1.50 for the initial kilometers and then increases incrementally. Alternatively, you can use popular ride-hailing services such as Grab or Gojek, which often offer lower fares and can be more convenient for longer journeys or when exploring multiple destinations.

Scooter Rental: Renting a scooter is a popular and cost-effective option for getting around Bali, especially for solo travelers or couples. Daily rental prices can range from $5 to $15, depending on the duration and type of scooter. However, it’s important to note that traffic in Bali can be chaotic, and road conditions may vary, so exercise caution and ensure that you have a valid international driver’s license and adequate travel insurance.

Private Drivers and Tour Packages: If you prefer a hassle-free experience or want to explore various attractions in Bali, hiring a private driver or booking a tour package can be a convenient option. The cost of a full-day private driver typically ranges from $30 to $50, depending on the itinerary and distance covered. Tour packages vary in price but often include transportation, entrance fees, and a professional guide.

Public Transportation: Bali has limited public transportation options, with the most common being buses and bemos (small vans). While these options are relatively inexpensive, they can be less convenient and require some knowledge of the routes and schedules.

Additional Costs: It’s important to consider additional transportation costs such as airport transfers and intercity travel. Airport transfers to your accommodation can range from $10 to $20 one-way, depending on the distance. If you plan to explore different regions of Bali, you may also need to budget for intercity transportation, such as ferry rides or domestic flights, which can vary in price depending on the destination.

Overall, transportation costs in Bali can vary depending on your preferred mode of transport and the distances you plan to cover. It’s advisable to allocate a reasonable budget for transportation to ensure you can comfortably navigate the island and make the most of your time in Bali.

Food and Dining Expenses

Indonesia is known for its delicious cuisine, and Bali offers a wide variety of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. From local warungs (small family-run eateries) to trendy cafes and upscale restaurants, there’s something for everyone in Bali.

When it comes to food and dining expenses, Bali offers options for both budget-conscious travelers and those looking for more high-end culinary experiences. Here are some factors to consider when budgeting for food during your 5-day trip:

Local Warungs: For the most affordable dining options, seek out local warungs where you can enjoy traditional Indonesian dishes at reasonable prices. These small eateries often serve dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), and satay (grilled skewers). Expect to pay around $2 to $5 per meal at local warungs.

Trendy Cafes and Street Food: Bali also offers a vibrant cafe culture, with numerous trendy cafes and stalls serving a variety of cuisines. These establishments often have higher prices but provide a more modern and Instagram-worthy dining experience. Budget around $5 to $10 per meal at cafes or street food stalls.

Mid-range Restaurants: If you’re looking for a more comfortable dining experience, Bali has a range of mid-range restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Prices can start from $10 per meal and go up to $30 per meal, depending on the type of cuisine and the location of the restaurant.

Upscale Restaurants and Fine Dining: Bali is also home to several upscale and fine dining establishments that offer exceptional culinary experiences. These restaurants often have picturesque settings, extensive menus, and world-class chefs. Prices for fine dining can range from $30 to $100 or more per meal.

It’s important to note that prices can vary depending on the location of the restaurant. Popular tourist areas like Seminyak and Ubud tend to have higher prices compared to less crowded areas.

Additionally, consider including a budget for drinks and beverages. Bali is famous for its fresh fruit juices, smoothies, and alcoholic beverages. Prices for drinks can range from $1 to $5, depending on the type and location. If you plan to enjoy some nightlife, allocate a separate budget for cocktails or drinks at bars and clubs.

Ultimately, the cost of food and dining in Bali can vary greatly depending on your preferences and where you choose to eat. By planning your meals and exploring a mix of local eateries and mid-range restaurants, you can manage your food expenses and savor the diverse flavors Bali has to offer.

Attractions and Activities Costs

Bali is a paradise for adventure seekers and those looking to immerse themselves in the island’s rich culture and natural beauty. From stunning temples and lush rice terraces to thrilling water sports and cultural performances, there are countless attractions and activities to enjoy during your 5-day trip to Bali.

Here are some popular attractions and activities to consider when budgeting for your trip:

Temples and Cultural Sites: Bali is dotted with majestic temples that offer a glimpse into the island’s rich spiritual heritage. Entrance fees for temples range from $1 to $5 per person. Some of the must-visit temples include Uluwatu Temple, Besakih Temple, and Tanah Lot Temple.

Nature and Adventure Activities: Bali’s diverse landscape allows for a range of thrilling activities. From trekking to Mount Batur or Mount Agung to surfing the world-famous waves in Uluwatu or Canggu, prices for these activities can vary. Expect to pay around $20 to $100 per person depending on the type and duration of the activity.

Water Sports: Bali is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you want to go scuba diving, snorkeling, white-water rafting, or parasailing, prices can range from $30 to $100 or more, depending on the activity and duration.

Cultural Performances: Immerse yourself in Bali’s vibrant arts and cultural scene by attending traditional dance performances or music concerts. Prices for cultural performances can range from $5 to $30 per person, depending on the venue and type of performance.

Spa and Wellness: Bali is known for its rejuvenating spa treatments and wellness retreats. Indulge in a relaxing massage, yoga class, or holistic healing session. Prices for spa and wellness experiences can range from $20 to $100 or more, depending on the type of treatment and the duration.

Entrance Fees to Attractions: It’s advisable to allocate a budget for entrance fees to popular attractions such as water parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural centers. Prices for entrance fees can vary from $5 to $30 or more, depending on the attraction and whether any additional activities or guided tours are included.

Keep in mind that some attractions and activities may offer discounts for children, seniors, or group bookings, so it’s always worth inquiring about any available promotions or packages.

Overall, budgeting for attractions and activities in Bali will depend on your interests and the number of activities you plan to participate in. By researching in advance and prioritizing your must-visit places, you can plan and allocate your budget accordingly to make the most of your time in Bali.

Miscellaneous Expenses

Aside from the main categories of expenses mentioned earlier, there are several miscellaneous costs to consider when budgeting for your 5-day trip to Bali. These expenses may not be significant on their own, but they can add up over the course of your trip. Here are some miscellaneous expenses to keep in mind:

Visa Fees: Depending on your nationality, you may need to pay for a visa upon arrival in Bali. The cost of a tourist visa varies, ranging from $10 to $35 for a 30-day visa. Check the specific visa requirements for your country and budget accordingly.

Travel Insurance: It’s highly recommended to have travel insurance to protect yourself in case of any unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. Travel insurance costs can vary depending on your age, duration of coverage, and the level of coverage you choose. Budget between $20 to $50 for travel insurance for your trip.

Currency Exchange and ATM Fees: Keep in mind that you’ll need to exchange your currency for Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) upon arrival in Bali. Look for reputable currency exchange providers to get a fair exchange rate and be aware of any associated fees. It’s also important to consider any potential ATM withdrawal fees, which can range from $2 to $5 per transaction.

Tipping: While tipping is not mandatory in Bali, it is appreciated for good service. You can budget around 10% of the total bill for tipping at restaurants, hotels, and for tour guides or drivers who provide excellent service.

Shopping: Bali is known for its vibrant markets and boutique shops where you can find unique clothing, handicrafts, artwork, and souvenirs. It’s a good idea to allocate a separate budget for shopping if you plan to indulge in some retail therapy during your trip.

Internet and Communication: Staying connected is essential, and most hotels and cafes in Bali offer free Wi-Fi. However, if you need to purchase a local SIM card for data or make international calls, budget around $5 to $10 for the SIM card and then top-up according to your usage.

Incidental Costs: Don’t forget to factor in any incidental expenses that may arise during your trip, such as laundry services, locker rentals, or extra charges for hotel amenities like minibar items or room service.

Emergencies and Contingency: It’s always wise to allocate a small amount for emergencies or unexpected expenses that may arise during your trip. Having some extra cash on hand can provide peace of mind in case of unforeseen circumstances.

By budgeting for these miscellaneous expenses, you can ensure that you’re prepared for any additional costs that may arise during your 5-day trip to Bali.

How Much Does It Cost To Travel To Bali For One Month

By: Author Robyn Robledo

Posted on Last updated: March 2, 2024

how much does it cost to travel to Bali for 1 month Pin

While I do love traveling to Europe, 1 month in Indonesia and Southeast Asia costs way less than the the former.  I was mixed about Bali.  Parts of it were absolutely wonderful, like Canggu.  And parts were way too rural and impoverished for me.  The cost to travel to Bali depends a lot on your standards for creature comforts. Personally, I think it’s important to know where your own standards lie and what you expect from your travels in order to budget accordingly. This post will give you a good idea of how much Bali will cost for a month whether you’re a budget traveler or luxury traveler.

Our Actual Costs to go to Bali for 1 Month

Cost of airfare to get to & return from bali – $670 per person (our cost = $4,690).

We bought two one-way tickets for this trip at two different times.  First, we had bought tickets from New Zealand to Bali which were only $230 per person since we were spending a month in New Zealand first.  This was a great deal that we found with Skyscanner alerts.  The cheapest I could get for the Bali to Los Angelas flight was $440 per person and it ended up being a very difficult flight with long layovers and flight changes.  This isn’t too pricey of a flight for a couple or small family but for our large family of 7, the airfare was a significant expenditure.

Best Place to Visit in Bali: Canggu

Cost of Food in Bali – Average $300 per person (Our cost = $600 – $2000)

When we were in Medewi, our large family of 7 was able to eat at the warung (local restaurant) for about $50 per day and we ate like kings.  A typical lunch of Nasi Goreng (fried rice with a fried egg on top) costs a little over $1 USD. Add an extra egg for only sixty cents and you’re ready to surf all day.  For about $20 USD total, we’d have huge dinners of fried fish and chicken, vegetable soup, rice, and fruit.

In Canggu, our food budget easily went up to around $75 USD per day, but we ate absolutely amazing food and a lot of it.

We spent very little on tourist activities while here since we were here to surf and that’s about it.  The rest of the money was spent on food.  Once we were in Canggu we spent a little more eating out than in other places we stayed (Medewi, Ubud, etc).  Our three favorite spots were The Garden Pizza House (delicious almost-italian-quality pizza and they delivered it to our rental house which was awesome), Front Cafe for coffee, Monsieur Spoon for chocolate croissants after our morning surf session, and Scoops Gelato House.

To summarize:

  • In Medewi our food costs were probably $5 per person per day
  • In Canggu (as well as the Bukit Peninsula and Ubud) our food costs where $10-15 per person per day

Things to do in Ubud, Bali

Cost of Accommodation – $40-50 per night for 2, $70-80 per night for large groups (Our cost= $2,300)

Half the time we were in Medewi and the Airbnb we stayed at cost only $750 for the whole month.

Here is what we spent for the month in Bali.  You could easily spend much less than this if you stayed in an Airbnb in a more rural area like Medewi (although not at Bombora, which is the upscale resort that sits on the point of Medewi– highly recommended if you have money to spend and want the best surf in Bali).

  • Our original Airbnb in rural Medewi was $750 for 28 days (even though we only stayed for about 14 of those days)
  • Airbnbs on our 11-day road trip around Bali including Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, and Munduk cost $880
  • And finally, our Airbnb for one week in Canggu in a really nice house was $700

While our Airbnb in Canguu may seem relatively expensive, it was a luxury house.  There were three large, clean rooms, our own private swimming pool, and someone came to clean every day.  it was wonderful and I highly recommend this Airbnb.

Get a $40 credit on your first AirBnb by clicking here!

Canggu, Adventurous Warm Weather Winter Destinations

Cost of Transportation – $400

This cost included the $200 to rent an SUV from a local.   Renting a car in Bali comes with risks, as there’s no insurance. We trusted a local, paid $200 USD, and got a new SUV. Despite a minor incident (scooter collision costing $15 USD), it was a cheap but not entirely recommended option due to Bali’s chaotic driving conditions.

While at our Airbnb in Canggu, we also rented one scooter for four days which only cost about $25 USD total. Riding a motorbike around Canggu was much easier than driving an SUV on Bali’s main highway and I highly recommend it.  If you are only a 1 or 2 people, renting a motorbike for a whole months would only be around $200.

Our only other transportation cost was getting a shuttle to and from the airport which ended up costing about $50 USD each way.

  • An SUV car rental (from a local) cost us about $15 per day, $200 for 2 weeks. I wouldn’t recommend renting a car in Bali because driving here is crazy but if you do, rent from a legit car rental brand even though it will probably end up costing more like $30 per day
  • I highly recommend motorbike rentals. They cost $5-10 dollars per day or around $200 for the month
  • Transportation to and from the airport in usually necessary and cost us $100 total . For smaller groups you can probably find a shuttle closer to $50 roundtrip

Other Expenses – $100

The final expense is very small and it’s really just for any tourist attractions you may be interested in. We didn’t see many attractions just because we weren’t really interested however I still recommend putting a little money aside for things like visiting temples, the monkey forest, or Bali waterfalls .

Total trip cost for 7 people to visit Bali for 1 month – $8,000

  • Airfare – $4,700
  • Accommodation – $2,300
  • Food – $1,500
  • Transportation – $400
  • Other expenses – $100

Estimated trip cost for 2 people to visit Bali for 1 month – $3,400

  • Airfare – $1,400
  • Accommodation – $1,500
  • Transportation – $300

Final Tips for Bali

  • Medewi was super cost effective and the food was decent, but some nights one of the younger kids wouldn’t eat what was served and then they’d go to bed complaining how hungry they were.  I’m all about making my kids suck things up, but when I too am tired and hungry, there’s only so much I can take. A big problem was that I got tired of so much fried food and rancid fats.  I am just too picky about how my food is prepared and I needed a grocery store so that I could cook my large family meals that everyone would eat.

So we spent extra to go to Canggu for two weeks where we had huge grocery stores and a variety of restaurants to choose from.

  • Personally, I love road trips and when Medewi wasn’t lining up to my expectations, we found a local with a car, handed him about $200 USD, shook hands, and headed out to explore the Bukit Peninsula and the mountains north of Ubud.  While I loved exploring Bali, I will warn you, driving here is not for the faint of heart.   It was crazy ! While it is technically a two lane higway, people drive as if it’s a four or six land highway with scooters passing you on both sides and semi’s that you have to have some nerve to pass before oncoming traffic hits you.  But if you can get over the craziness of it all, you’ll see that drivers are actually quite good and there are very few accidents.
  • I can’t recommend enough to stay in Canggu.  It’s the perfect Bali experience and while you will spend a little more than somewhere like Medewi, it’s still more affordable than Ubud or the Bukit peninsula plus is way less touristy. If you love adventure, then you must include Mt. Batur in your holidays. Mt. Batur is a sacred active volcano in the Kintamani district, about an hour’s drive away from Ubud. At sunrise, many visitors trek the 1,700-metre summit of Mt. Batur to watch the sunrise above the mist-shrouded mountains. The hike can take two to three hours and stands along a well-marked trail. Guided tours are also available with an omelette breakfast, cooked from the volcanic steam. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended along with two layers before sunrise to beat the cold. When here, you can visit the rustic village of Toya Bungkah located at the banks of Lake Batur.

’Happening’ is one word to define this sandy Bali tourist place! Take a walk along Kuta’s sandy shore that is super close to the Seminyak and the Legian beaches. Soak up the sunset views, take surf lessons, or eat at the aplenty cafes that line the beach. Simply lounge on rented sun loungers, read a book or snap memorable pictures. travel cost for bali

A family spent 3 months rebooking flights home from Bali after being incorrectly marked as a no-show by Turkish Airlines. Now, they might lose $5,000.

  • Justin Parfitt's family spent $12,093 on Turkish Airlines business-class tickets to Indonesia.
  • Their tickets permitted changes, but when they went to extend the trip, the system didn't allow it.
  • Parfitt said his family was incorrectly marked as a no-show, and he's spent months trying to rebook the flights.

Justin Parfitt has sent 47 emails, called more than 30 times, and spent an estimated six hours on the phone with Turkish Airlines in an attempt to change his family's flight home from Indonesia to France, he told Business Insider.

Last October, Parfitt purchased semi-flexible business-class tickets for $12,093, but he said his family couldn't adjust their return flights home due to a system error.

Now, ticket prices have increased, and the Parfitt family is looking at flights that cost $5,000 more than initially planned.

"At the end of the day, it's not like a life is on the line," the 54-year-old said. "But you're thinking, 'Am I going to lose all this money? How are we getting home?' It's been stressful and frustrating."

Turkish Airlines did not respond to a request for comment from BI.

A canceled flight caused the family to be marked as no-shows

Parfitt, who runs a short-term vacation rental company out of Bali, started planning his family's trip to Indonesia last fall.

While the family lives outside Toulouse, France, Parfitt said they found better flight prices out of Madrid. In October, the family spent $12,093 on four business-class tickets for a January flight on Turkish Airlines. The route would take them from Madrid to Indonesia, with a layover in Istanbul. Their return trip, scheduled for February, would bring them back home to France. BI confirmed the price and itinerary.

Parfitt said his family decided to splurge on the business-class tickets, which included a flexible fare flight policy. The family could change their flights for a fee , which Parfitt said was about $100 per ticket.

On January 4, the family made it to Madrid and boarded their flight to Istanbul, where they would catch a final flight to Denpasar, Indonesia. But after sitting on the plane for one and a half hours, the flight was canceled due to operational issues, Parfitt said.

Parfitt said the Turkish Airlines staff handled the situation "quite well." The stranded passengers boarded a bus to a hotel. With no available Turkish Airlines flights, airline staff rebooked the Parfitt family on an Emirates flight to Denpasar with a layover in Dubai the next day. Parfitt said Turkish Airlines paid for these changes, along with the hotel and transportation.

But this last-minute change meant the Parfitt family wasn't seated together in business class for the two long-haul flights. For both flights, seven hours and nine hours long, their 8-year-old daughter and Parfitt sat alone. Parfitt's wife Annabelle sat with their 3-year-old child.

Parfitt said he thought their flight troubles were over once they reached Denpasar. Still, four weeks later, the family decided to extend their Indonesia trip to the end of June so Parfitt and his wife could expand their short-term vacation rental business in Bali.

Parfitt figured this would be simple. He said he purchased semi-flexible tickets for this reason and was happy to pay the change fee. He went online to move their return flights to France, but the system wouldn't let him. He tried changing them via chat, which didn't work either.

Parfitt said he called the airline, and multiple customer service agents told him this change was not permitted on his account.

February 22, the date of their return flight, was approaching, and Parfitt had "these four expensive business-class seats that are about to go up in smoke," he said.

After 13 calls to Turkish Airlines, Parfitt said an agent finally discovered the issue: The family had been incorrectly marked as no-shows on the second leg of their original Turkish Airlines flight.

If an airline discovers a passenger hasn't boarded a flight, the system may mark them as a no-show. Depending on the airline, this may trigger future flights — like a return flight — to be canceled, and airlines may cancel a frequent flyer status, Simply Flying reported.

This may also happen if an airline suspects a passenger is "skip-lagging," when a person books a cheaper ticket with a layover as their intended destination and skips the second flight. Companies like American Airlines previously announced they were cracking down on the practice .

Turkish Airlines' no-show policy states that a business-semi-flexible ticket isn't automatically canceled; it "may be reused for a specified fee, no refunds." The airline does not state the cost of the no-show fee online.

Parfitt said discovering this mistake reignited his hope. Their return flight was five days away, but now that they knew the issue, he hoped the solution would be easy.

At the time, Parfitt said the agent told him he couldn't change it in the system but would call back with an update.

Parfitt said he didn't receive a follow-up, so he continued contacting Turkish Airlines. On March 13, he said a different representative told him the airline could not fulfill the change requests.

Parfitt told BI it was money "his family could not afford to lose." So he continued calling and emailing.

Finally, on April 26, Turkish Airlines sent Parfitt an email acknowledging the error. In the email, which BI viewed, the airline representative said they would waive the family's no-show fees. The email does not state how much the no-show fee costs, and Parfitt said he hadn't been told the price either. In the email, the representative added that Parfitt may still need to "pay change fee, fare and tax differences and ticketing service fee."

Parfitt estimates it could cost over $5,000 to change the flights

Parfitt said Turkish Airlines' fix isn't good enough.

"Now, the fare difference is thousands more and the idea that this is somehow a solution after three months ... I was livid," he said.

Parfitt estimates that the flights are about $5,000 more than they were at the beginning of February, and he would still be required to pay about $400 in change fees.

"I don't know how often this set of circumstances would happen, but it can happen," he said. "And there is no adequate way of dealing with this particular set of circumstances."

In addition to the extra cost and hassle, Parfitt said he believes his family is owed about 176,108 points with Turkish Airlines. When he booked the tickets, he said he was told that each passenger would receive 21,527 points for the flight between Madrid and Denpasar, but the airline never issued his family those points since they were rerouted with Emirates.

Parfitt said the airline did give him 30,000 points for the overall rerouting inconvenience, but no one else in his family received them.

It's been over three months since Parfitt first contacted the airline to adjust the flights. After this inconvenience, Parfitt believes Turkish Airlines should rebook them on a flight to Toulouse at no additional cost.

"I'm just amazed that this big company, this award-winning airline, is taking this tack," he said. "It's not addressing its customers' legitimate needs."
