Women Over 50: Your Best Guide to a Capsule Travel Wardrobe

capsule travel wardrobe for women over 59

Social media is filled with travel photos of gorgeous young women in flowing gowns that coordinate with the scenery. We long to look like these women, but the reality of travel, for us more mature women, is not as glamorous as these images portray. Travel involves a lot of walking… and dust… and sun. And how do these influencers climb a mountain in a full-length gown? Let alone pack light with sundresses in every color? Sleeveless dresses and high heels just aren’t practical, especially as travel clothing for women over 50. But no worries! You can create a travel capsule wardrobe with stylish and functional clothes that allow you to pack light, feel comfortable, and look great!

My travels have taken me to over 60 countries, from luxury African safaris and European cruises to rafting and camping through the Grand Canyon. Through trial and error (and maybe a few overstuffed suitcases!), I’ve honed my packing skills and space-saving strategies. Now, I’m here to help you create a capsule wardrobe that lets you travel light and explore in style .

What is a capsule wardrobe and why use one for travel?

A capsule wardrobe is defined as a collection of basic items that mix and match, and don’t go out of style. The items harmonize in color and put together can create many, many looks. It’ll take you from a morning walk to afternoon tea . This system is ideal for traveling light. By curating your travel clothes, you can travel carry-on only, limit decision fatigue, and still look lovely. Perfect for the older woman adventurer!

examples of mix and match outfits for travel.. Pack light with a capsule wardrobe for women in retirement.

As a frequent traveler, I have created two basic capsule travel wardrobes, one for cold weather and one for warm. As I plan my trip, I adjust these capsules. I’ve tried to stick to a 10-piece wardrobe for my trips, but may add or subtract as the circumstances dictate. [On recent trips I’ve included a statement piece for more versatility and fun, creating an 11-piece capsule. ] To make things simpler I use a phone app for my packing lists with the capsule wardrobe items as basics for every trip. But you don’t need an app or anything special to create your capsule wardrobe – just make a list of the clothes you will use in your capsule or keep the list in a notebook or a spreadsheet. Whatever works for you!

A capsule wardrobe is defined as a collection of basic items that mix and match and don’t go out of style.  In theory the capsule wardrobe is all you need for a 2-week holiday wardrobe for over 50s. In practice the capsule wardrobe is often the base wardrobe for the trip, with extra pieces added as space allows.

Consider your itinerary

If you’re off on a work trip or visiting a city you know well, you likely know what types of clothing you’ll be needing and will only have to account for the weather. But if you’re planning an adventure it’s helpful to make a list of the activities you’ll be doing to understand what clothing you’ll need.

Creating a calendar, or printing out your itinerary, can be helpful. Planning ahead for hiking in the morning and a nice dinner in the evening will make your life easier. And can save decision time if you bring your notes with you!

I’ve found that after days of travel, I might forget some of the options my capsule allows. It’s great to have a reminder of what I’d planned! (Left: I almost forgot to wear my Zuri duster as a skirt until I noted it on my planning app!)

Choose the basics for your capsule travel wardrobe

Begin with what you have . There is no need to go out and buy items if you have the makings of a good travel wardrobe already. Let’s set an example of sustainable living by using what we have, before buying something new! Look for clothing that travels well – lightweight, easy-care clothing you enjoy and would happily reach for at home. (I’d add wrinkle free clothing, or wrinkle resistant, if that’s not already your closet standard. It is mine! Who has time for ironing?!)

Simple is best – make your clothing the least interesting thing about you.

Choose a neutral color for your base : Black works for most cities, whites for the tropics. But choose navy or beige if it’s more flattering on you. Still neutral! I began with a black base but have changed to navy as it’s softer against my skin and hair.

Pick 2 tops and 1 bottom (pants, shorts, skirt) in this neutral color. Make sure these items are comfortable, classic, and easy to care for. A Breton striped shirt is a great item to add here.

Add one solid white (or black) shirt: Bring one additional solid top, a tee if the trip is casual, or a button down for dressing up. These are the travel wardrobe essentials. The classic button down goes well with everything and can even be worn open as a jacket. I pack either a black merino tee or an Eddie Bauer wrinkle-resistant button down shirt . Just splurged on a quality merino wool top from Wool&, the Stevie 3/4 sleeve top. I’m thrilled with it – flattering and super comfortable. I know it’ll make it in my every packing list!

Add a solid black (or neutral) bottom: I always pack one pair of black pants or capris. These go with everything and don’t show dirt. (Helpful hint: wear dark colors on a flight. Nothing like turbulence to cause a spill!) Some people always pack jeans. These are heavy, and slow to dry when laundered, so don’t usually make it into my luggage, but there are trips when jeans are mandatory! You do you!

Add a topper – a lightweight sweater or jacket in the neutral or a coordinating neutral. Having some sort of topper is critical if you’re visiting sacred sites, or traveling in areas where women dress conservatively. A pashmina will do the trick if you’re averse to sweaters. (If you’re cold weather traveling, you’ll probably need 2 toppers.)

[Optional] Add a dress , or two, depending on your destination and style of travel. I have a couple of print shift dresses I may pack, but generally choose to bring a dress in my neutral color. Extra points if this dress is able to be styled up and down. I’ve been won over to Wool& merino wool dresses lately which can be styled as a dress, a top, or a tunic.

Add 2 tops/blouses in complementary color: Choose silky sleeveless tops and you can pack three!

travel clothing for women after 50, putting together a capsule travel wardrobe

I took a camel DKNY cashmere cozy as my topper on our South African trip. It was perfect on the long flight, serving as sweater and blanket in one. I reached for it again in the cool evenings on safari and in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town wore it to dress up for dinners out.

Pay attention to the lengths that work for your body. Unless blessed by genetics, most women in their fifties and sixties will want a bit more coverage in their over 50 capsule wardrobe. Tights, and short skirts may not flatter as they once did but pair those tights with a long tunic and you’re good to go! I find capris or cropped pants flatter my legs and I choose tops with sleeves to protect from the sun.

Example of a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Create a capsule travel wardrobe around a basic neutral. Add color and texture to liven it up.

Example of the Minimalist Capsule expanded to 11-pieces

Use the core capsule as a base for an 11-piece travel capsule wardrobe with plenty of options.

Accessorize your capsule travel wardrobe by adding color and style

Have fun – choose a few colorful pieces to jazz up your outfits. This is where we can learn from the renowned style of the French woman. She might wear a simple neutral outfit every day (often black) but will liven it up with accessories! A silky blouse, a colorful scarf, or a bright skirt – lightweight pieces that add some spice to your outfits. Some women will design their whole capsule wardrobe around the colors of their favorite scarf.

Jewelry – those neutral outfits are asking for some fun jewelry. Leave your valuable pieces at home but bring a chunky necklace or sparkly earrings. Small things can bump your day outfit to evening wear! I love to pick up jewelry as I travel. Great to wear on the trip and a wonderful (lightweight!) souvenir when we’re home.

Review and visualize your capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe template will help you to choose items that mix and match well. We’ve shared our favorites on Easy Elegance: 3 Templates for Capsule Wardrobe Planning .

Pack light with a capsule wardrobe. Travel with carry-on only, using scarves and jewelry to add color. Image of luggage with scarf

Use an app like Outfit Planner, Stylebook or Cladwell to visualize how your wardrobe picks work together. Don’t pack anything that doesn’t go with two or more pieces. Remember, your goal is to create mix and match outfits for travel. (see Pack Lighter with Stylebook)

Test pack I lay out all my planned clothing at least a week before the trip. This is a great time to make sure the pieces work together as well as to check for stains, and necessary repairs. This is also when you might notice you have a bit of extra room to add another favorite scarf or t shirt! But be careful, it’s easy to throw in a couple of “just in case” items that’ll negate all the work you’ve done to create a minimalistic travel capsule!

[scarf: Gold & Blue William Morris from the Met Opera Shop – a favorite, shown also in capsule collage above!]

Shoes for travel

Probably the biggest challenge for packing light is shoes. It’s difficult to pare down our options when it comes to footwear. Most experts recommend limiting ourselves to two pairs of shoes, with the heaviest being worn on the flight. I must admit I often take three – sneakers or hiking shoes on the flight, a pair of flats, and sandals. Wear heels if you are absolutely comfortable in them, but for my travel wardrobe over 60, I stick to stylish flats.

But I’m still hopeful that I’ll come across that unicorn – a casual flat/sandal option that’ll take me to dinner or the pool… Recommendations gladly accepted!

Adding new items to your travel wardrobe capsule

Shop your closet first! Set an example of sustainable travel by using what you have before buying something new . The fashion industry is one of the leading contributors to global carbon emissions. Commit to reducing your ‘fast fashion’ consumption. Wear what you have and, when new is necessary, invest in well made, timeless designs.

If you don’t already have items in your closet that will work for your trip, there are many options for women’s clothes for travel. In addition to the tried-and-true big travel clothing companies – Travelsmith, Magellans, etc. – many clothing lines cater to women in their 50s, 60s, and above. They usually offer flattering clothes that travel well.

Quality first! It’s past time for fast fashion- those trendy, inexpensive items that’ll be worn one season before ending up in the donation pile. If you’re going to buy women’s clothes for travel, invest in good quality pieces. You will pay more initially for that merino wool top, but it’ll serve you for many years. (Merino wool is the ultimate travel fabric – wrinkle resistant, odor resistant, and quick drying! Bonus points for it’s being a sustainable fabric!)

Find a brand that fits you well and is designed with travel in mind, i.e. wrinkle resistant. Look into convertible clothing which can give you a lot of options. The following brands carry stylish pieces for a holiday wardrobe for over 50s:

Brands offering quality travel clothing for women over 50

Athleta carries affordable pants that work for travel days, and evenings out. Well tailored, the black Venice pintuck pants, are always on my list.

Encircled in Canada has a line of ‘dressy casuals’ which are ideal for travel . I love the dressy sweatpants. They’re slouchy and soft, great for travel days, but look refined enough for an evening out with a jacket or pretty scarf. Encircled has committed to sustainability and is making many of its classic pieces in bamboo and merino wool.

Coolibar Amara shirt -classic summer style - coastal grandmother

Coolibar specializes in sun-protective clothing. This is so important as travelers are out in the sun so much and often forget to reapply sunscreen! I’ve added several of these pieces to my travel wardrobe. My favorite is the Amara button-down shirt which resists wrinkles and lets me channel my inner “coastal grandmother.” Ha!

Chico’s Travelers Collection has wrinkle free options that look great coming straight out of the suitcase. Many dressy options, too! I always include a few items from Chico’s in my capsule wardrobe.

Wool& clothing isn’t designed specifically for travel, but the simple merino dresses are a natural to work as your base. They also offer merino wool leggings which are wonderful for layering on chilly mornings. Other responsible wool brands to check: Ridge Merino (love my Hyde dress/topper ), Unbound Merino , and (U.S. Made) Wuru .

Toad & Co . has many natural fiber pieces that are great as accent pieces to your capsule wardrobe.

Eileen Fisher ‘s styles are timeless. The silk tops and the luxe merino stretch line would seem to be perfect travel solutions. (I haven’t had the opportunity to try this line, but have had great success with lightweight, odor resistant merino wool.)

Diane Kroe specializes in travel-friendly clothing and has some of the best travel clothes for women. Most are multi-functional – converting from scarves to cardigans, skirted tights to bodysuits. Diane Kroe’s line includes stylish clothing for plus size women as well. I always have a Diane Kroe piece on my packing list!

Visit REI to see lots of options for active travel – Patagonia, Prana, Exofficio, Smartwool, Icebreaker – all are great options if you’ll be hiking or cycling on your trip.

Perfect travel clothing for women over 50 is comfortable and makes you feel good

It’s most important that you pack only things that are comfortable to wear and make you happy. Don’t include a ‘travel friendly’ option that you’d never reach for at home.

I can’t emphasize this enough. DO NOT pack anything you wouldn’t be comfortable wearing at home. Traveling in our older years is a gift. We no longer need dress to impress but can dress to de-stress. We can find comfortable clothing for older women that will make us feel good. And as we have come to learn – if we feel good, we look good!

This basic over 50 capsule travel wardrobe will serve you well from Paris to the Grand Canyon. But if there’s room in your luggage, allow yourself a favorite item or two. A brightly colored dress, graphic tee, or signature piece will be a nice change from the basic wardrobe.

And as always -make sure to pack a hat for skin protection!

There is virtually nowhere you can’t go in a white blouse and black pants. Dressed up or down, having these two items that fit well are indispensable.

Yes! But I make sure to pack two white blouses as I’ll inevitably spill something the first day! 🙂

I own the Edie Bauer wrinkle free shirt, I’ll leave it home and pack my llbean pinpoint wrinkle free shirt instead , because it is really really wrinkle free.

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t tried the LL Bean pinpoint wrinkle free, but will now!

This is an EXCELLENT article! As a full-time International Petsitter, you would think I would have the packing thing down to a science, but I SO do not. This will help me immensely! Thank you!

Most of my wardrobe for years has come from Eileen Fisher. Her tunic tops and crepe or ponte pants (black) are perfect for travel. And they come in all sizes now.

I’ve heard great things about that line, but haven’t tried it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Lovely informative article!

Loved your information. I find it so hard to pack for long trips. The younger gals make it all look so easy.

Thanks, Dana! I can’t imagine how many clothes the younger girls bring to create such instagramable images!

Over the years I have managed to create a coordinated set of clothes that come with me when I travel. But I must admit because I wear many of these just when travelling they don’t wear out. So I feel like I am always looking the same in my travel photos! Good idea to think about one for hot and cold temps. My biggest challenge too is shoes.

Ha! But I bet you’re likely the only one who notices the repeated outfits!

Lindsay phillips shoes……her tag line is change your style not your sole, I have several pairs, Switch flops with changable straps for the day, heels with changable button decorations for meals and evenings, 2 pairs……endless possibilities, a travellers dream

Due to ongoing foot problems,I have chosen vionic flip flops. Choose plain ones for everyday and sparkly ones for dinner.

Thanks. What capsule app do you use?

I use Stylebook mostly. I used to use Cladwell. Do you have an app you recommend?

I love the short sleeved blouse you picture below your heading, “What is a capsule wardrobe and why recommend using one for travel?” Where can I find that or something similar? Been struggling to find blouses that serve many purposes like that one would, that are not cheaply made and that travel well. Help!

One of the fashion tips my husband and I brought home from Europe is their use of scarves in the winter. They are beautiful, warm and functional. Great ideas for travel clothes.

Shoes I have found that are comfortable and I can wear to dinner, Naot- Kayla or Hero

Thanks Leslie, I haven’t tried Naot shoes. Will have to look for them.

I LOVE Naot shoes! Almost every pair of shoes I own is from Naot. They are so comfortable, even for long walking days. I’ve worn them all over Europe, in many Disney parks, and to Sydney and Cape Town. I never even have to break them in!

I have a pair of sparkly Fit Flop sandals that are extremely comfortable and take me easily to dress up at night. I’m about to embark on a long multi seasonal trip and hope to be able to pack in a smaller suitcase for ease getting on and off trains. Being plus size is a challenge because it takes up more space. Thanks for your ideas.

I’m only 33 but I’m also baffled by how these ladies pack all these long flowy dresses to hikes (some even rent them!). I love clothes and fashion, but I too prefer being practical. There’s a middle ground. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Starting to build my wardrobe now for a 2-week trip to Europe in early spring. My biggest challenges are being prepared for rain/cooler weather and being able to stick with carry-on luggage only. I have some wrinkle-free basics (tops and bottoms) which supposedly will wash easily (we’ll be in AirBnBs with washers but no dryers). I am sensitive to fabrics so Merino wool is not an option for me. I have a lightweight packable down jacket and recently invested in some waterproof trainers, plus I am planning to bring a pair of flat boots. Thank you for your tips, the scarf-for-a-pop-of-color idea is a game-changer!

Sounds great Neysa! Consider a technical fabric base layer to help with the cooler weather. Packs light but will keep you cozy.

I LOVE bamboo fabrics. Similarly to merino wool, I find that they are cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cool. They drape well, and are soft to the touch. They’re also naturally antimicrobial, so they don’t stink and need to be laundered less frequently. I own leggings, nightgowns, tanks, and tees!

may I ask where do you purchase the dress at the top of your first picture with the scarf around the neck. I have been looking for one of theses but not having much luck.

Love this article as most seem always to skinny models, which i am not!!!!!

Hi Carol, that dress is an old favorite of mine, from Travelsmith. It’s no longer available but you might find similar dresses at Lands End, Chicos, or Wool&.

Thanks for your kind words!

Thank you so much for this post. It is great to see the pieces all work together. Re sandals, I have a pair of rose pink Merrel sandals that are great to walk around in all day, and are lovely worn with a sun dress. These are my day/evening shoes for a hot tropical destination. https://www.merrellaustralia.com.au/products/sandspur-rose-convert-marron

Ooh! I love those. I have similar in black but I love the subtle pink. Thanks for sharing!

We are going on the Viking Grand European cruise this fall. I am trying to put together the Capsule wardrobe & I love your suggestions. I know the white/black stripe long sleeve Tee is popular & I love it. I just can’t seem to find one I love. Any suggestions?

That will be a wonderful cruise!!

The stripe shirt is a classic and perfect for Europe. But as you’ve found, sometimes it’s hard to find one that suits you. I recently purchased one from Yala made of bamboo. Haven’t travel tested it yet but plan on taking it to Peru next month. Let me know if you find one you love!

I always pack one of these! I just got one from Yala in bamboo that I like. Have a great time on your trip. We’re looking at that cruise too.

Such great tips and suggestions! We’re newly empty nesters and have just started to enjoy the cruising life but man, packing and knowing how..for different destinations can be tricky! This will be a big help for our Alaskan cruise coming up in a month.

Great! Our Alaskan cruise was cancelled in 2021. But we’ll get there someday! Have fun!

Excellent article! Thanks so much!

I love the “formula” for putting together a practical travel wardrobe; it looks like a perfect starting point for any trip! I’d never choose black for the neutral. Brown, olive or navy are more friendly travel colors, as they hide dirt better than black.

A couple questions: You didn’t mention PJs … I’d lean towards a casual lounge outfit like joggers + an oversized tee, and I’d bring two lounge outfits so you could wear one while washing the others (of course, I’m assuming the luxury of a washing machine). Also, lounge outfits need to be “decent enough” to be seen by others.

That’s a great addition. Thanks, Resa! I usually bring a light nightgown, but have definitely packed loungewear when I’m traveling with friends.

Absolutely spot on with the image versus reality scenario. I’m 64 travelling to several cities in Italy and then going on a cruise. Also I do t want to lug a suitcase so everything must fit in my backpack carryon. The reality is I perspire, get sore feet, and occasionally need to have a nap. Love all the suggestions you’ve made.

Wow! So helpful, I tend to overpack!! We are going to Italy for 3 weeks in November, so I’m already fretting about what to pack.😬

Three weeks in Italy! Lucky you!

We were in Italy for 3 weeks last Nov. Plan for wetter and colder than you think, and plan to do laundry. Don’t forget your umbrella, great walking shoes no matter what they look like and a camera.

I’m 60 and putting together a wardrobe for my trip to Europe, but I’m sorry you lost me with the dowdy capris (or ANYTHING Chicos) and the old lady scarves. We all have our own style, and this works for you, but I wouldn’t wear anything so frumpy myself. I DO intend to wear breezy sleeveless dresses and not sure why those are considered “not appropriate.”

Hi Donna, I certainly don’t think breezy sleeveless dresses are inappropriate and am delighted that you’ll be enjoying them! Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for all your tips. They are great. I always try to avoid buying new clothes before I travel and take what I have in my wardrobe ..that way I can buy that nice new top in Italy or something from the place I am visiting and leave some of my older clothes behind. That way I have room in my case & come home with something I have bought for myself. 😀

Me too! I love having special pieces that remind me of a great trip.

The concept of a capsule wardrobe is truly a game-changer for travel. The idea of mixing and matching essential pieces to create numerous outfits is brilliant. It’s wonderful to see how a well-curated wardrobe can take you from a morning walk to afternoon tea, all while feeling confident and put-together.

Your tips on choosing a neutral base color and adding complementary pieces to jazz up the outfits are spot on. Accessories truly make a difference in transforming a simple outfit. And your emphasis on quality over fast fashion is incredibly important – investing in well-made, versatile pieces not only benefits the traveler but also contributes to sustainable living.

I’m planning a trip to Copenhagen next month and hoping to pack in just a backpack so I’m not stuck finding a place to stash a suitcase between hotels. Thanks for the capsule tips. I’m looking for lightweight, rollable, wrinkle-free clothes so they’ll look as good on Day 4 as the day I pack. Any tips?

I love my merino wool and bamboo clothing. Super lightweight and wrinkle-free. Have a great trip!

my go to shoes are bobs by sketchers. they have on amazon called women’s desert kiss stretch quarter strap sandal flat . the only shoe that has zero sciatic pain due to a low heel .

Thanks Ann, I have a pair of Skechers I wear all the time! I’ll be bringing it to France with me next month.

Chico’s no ion shirts are wonderful and come in many colors. I have their long and 3/4 sleeve white for travel. They work great!!! I get compliments each time I wear them with scarves. I,too, wear sketchers most travel days. The are fantastic and can be washed. Great site and info.

Love it! As a mom I struggle to find practical clothes. Capsule wardrobe is a great option. Next summer I will definitely create my travel capsule wardrobe!

I need to assemble a capsule wardrobe for an Alaska cruse for a plus size women. I don’t ask for much. The weather varies greatly.

Focus on layers, Wendy. I’d suggest a base layer top (and perhaps bottom) and then create the capsule as you usually would. (I’d bring a merino dress that can be accessorized to create several looks, a pair of dark pants and top. Pack your favorite scarves, etc. Adding a lightweight sweater that can be removed as the day warms up works well.)

I love all of your suggestions for minimalist packing. My problem is I seem to have a small head, so hats overwhelm me! If I try the hats in the kids dept., they have cartoon characters on them! Help! Any suggestions on how to pick out or fit a hat? TIA Erin

Hi Erin, I have the opposite problem and have had some luck getting hats on Amazon. If they don’t fit, you can return them.

If your summer vacation is right around the corner and you’re looking to streamline your packing, creating a summer travel capsule wardrobe ensures you have versatile, chic outfits ready for any adventure. Whether you’re taking in stunning coastal views, exploring museums and historical sites, tasting wine, or eating in amazing restaurants, having the right clothes can make all the difference.

In this blog post, I’ll share tips and tricks for putting together the perfect summer travel capsule wardrobe tailored for women over 50 and traveling to a warm destination. I’ll share versatile pieces that travel well in the summer, are comfortable, and easily mix and match so your suitcase is filled with exactly what you want and need to have a great time.  At the end, I’ll show you outfit ideas for all the ways you can style these pieces. Get ready for a ton of outfit pictures!

What is a summer travel capsule wardrobe?

A summer travel capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated collection of versatile clothing items designed to meet all of your needs for a trip without overpacking. With some carefully chosen pieces that you can mix and match, you can make a variety of stylish looks for anything you have on your travel itinerary. Choose comfortable pieces that coordinate well in color and style, such as lightweight dresses, comfy tops, pants, or jeans, and layering pieces like a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.

After hearing from so many mid-life women who don’t love wearing shorts, this capsule is centered around dresses, pants, jeans, and flat shoes that are easy for walking.

Start by considering the number of days you’re traveling and the suitcase you’ll be taking. For a 7 to 10-day trip, build your packing list around enough clothes for 7 days. Depending on your suitcase size and whether you’re packing everything in a carry-on suitcase or planning to check your bags, you may be able to add more pieces. Investigate the laundry options at your hotel and plan to wash clothes through the hotel if you’ll be traveling for a long time.

If you’re heading to a warmer destination where temperatures will be at least 70 degrees, dresses are a great choice, especially if you don’t love wearing shorts. Look for lightweight fabrics with natural fibers like linen and cotton. Cotton fabric blends are also a good choice since they are wrinkle-resistant, wick moisture, and dry fast. Blends that include rayon, acrylic, nylon, and polyester are also great options for the same reason.

This capsule includes 4 dresses that transition from day to night, 5 short-sleeve tops with 1 pair of lightweight linen pants, 1 pair of jeans, a layering cardigan, and a denim jacket for cool restaurants or evenings. I include 2 optional items, including a pair of shorts and white jeans, in case they feel more like your personal style.

Since tops get smelly and bottoms are easy to re-wear without washing, you’ll need more tops than bottoms.

I’ve built this capsule around shades of blue, black, and white. Having a color scheme makes it easy to mix and match pieces. Shades of blue are perfect for summer and have a bit more visual interest than a capsule wardrobe full of neutral colors.

Let’s look at the pieces I’m including in this capsule.

Gap Factory Navy and Pink Floral Splitneck mini dress

Fit Note: I’m midsized at 5’6″, 162 pounds, with a 36-B bust, and size 12 jeans.

Here are 4 dresses that can be worn from day to night.

1. Navy and pink floral tie-waist dress (Fits TTS, wearing size medium)

I don’t usually wear dresses with floral patterns, but this one feels playful and effortless. It’s a great choice on a hot day since it’s sleeveless. It has a flattering v-neck and a tie waist to define the middle. At 5’6”, it hits above the knee for me. Made of rayon, it has a silky feel and is wrinkle-resistant. It’s lightweight, cool, and comfy and comes in 6 patterns. I’m wearing it in a medium.

2. Blue notch-neck swing dress (Fits loose, wearing a small)

A classic navy dress is a great alternative to black for summertime. This one is an unexpected win. The navy with a white wave pattern is so eye-catching. The notch neck draws the eye up to the face. The cap sleeves elongate the arms. The waist cinches in at your natural waist and then opens into a full skirt. This soft knit has a thin lining. It doesn’t wrinkle and is not see-through.

Blue notch-neck swing dress

It’s a great alternative to shorts and hits a few inches above the knee for me.  I’m contemplating trying a medium so it’s a bit roomier across the shoulders with my 36-B bust. That will also make it a bit longer. If you have similar sizing, consider ordering a medium.

This comfy dress will be on permanent rotation this summer, dressed up and down.

3. Black tulip sleeve swing dress (Fits roomy, wearing a small)

You guys, Loft brought back a classic little black dress I bought years ago and loved so much that I couldn’t bear to get rid of it. This is an elevated t-shirt dress with tulip sleeves that aren’t puffy but have overlapping petal-shaped sleeves that add a little something extra to the dress for a stylish look. The skirt is a-line with a swing, so my stomach is completely concealed, and the length hits right above the knee. I’ve tried the new version in the store, and it is an exact replica. Although the fabric content has changed slightly, it’s still an easy-to-wear cotton blend.

Black tulip sleeve swing dress

I’ve worn this dress to work with a blazer, a funeral in a pinch, and like a t-shirt dress with sneakers and a baseball cap on a Saturday. This is the all-purpose dress that you will wear again and again after your trip is over. See how I styled it in 20 Best Black T-shirt Dress Outfit Ideas + Style Tips .

4. Navy and white floral midi dress (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

This navy floral midi dress is sleeveless with a split neck and a gathered elastic waistband hitting at the slimmest part of your natural waistline. The fabric is a lightweight cotton rayon blend that resembles gauze in that it has a slight texture to the fabric. The dress has pockets and is lined on the bottom with a breathable, lightweight material. This is one you can dress up for a nice dinner or wear with sneakers or slides. The navy and white floral has touches of royal blue and feels elevated.

Navy and white floral midi dress

I’m wearing a medium, and the flowy midi skirt hugs my size 12 hips with a little room. Going up a size would probably make it too big in the bust as a 36-B.

Now let’s look at bottoms. I’m including linen pants and blue jeans. I’m also sharing two optional items, including white shorts and white jeans.

5. White linen pants (Fits loose, wearing a medium)

I debated whether to include lightweight linen pants or white shorts here. I love the comfort of pull-on pants, especially after a long flight. I’ve heard from many midlife women who don’t love wearing shorts, so I included shorts as an alternate option below. If wearing white pants worries you for traveling, carry a stain pen. Also, be careful when you’re eating chocolate. Those little crumbs melt right into the fabric.

These linen pants look best with the shirt untucked, which hides the elastic waistband and creates a more streamlined look.

White linen pants

6. Blue denim kick crop jeans (Fit TTS, I’m in a 31, aka 12)

It’s a good idea to pack a pair of jeans in the event of cold weather or a rainy day. Kick crop jeans are a fresh and modern alternative to skinny jeans. They’re still slim fitting in the hips and thighs, but they have a cute flare below the knee and are ankle length at 5’6”. As someone who wears size 12 jeans, I love how the flare provides balance to my triangle body type with a larger rear. These Loft kick crop jeans are a new purchase, and they are insanely flattering. Somehow, they make my legs look like they go on for days. They’re soft, and have so much give for comfort. The wash is a bit lighter for summer, and the hem is finished, giving a more polished look.

Blue denim kick crop jeans

7. Optional Item: White kick crop jeans (Fit TTS, wearing size 31)

These high rise kick crop jeans are some of my favorites. The rise is 11-inches and the slightly flared crop raw hem balances wider hips and shows off your shoes.

White kick crop jeans

8. Optional item: White shorts (Fit slightly big, wearing my true size 12 for a roomier fit)

I’m not a big shorts person, but these are my go-to when I do wear them. They have a longer 6-inch inseam without being Bermuda shorts. These are the curvy fit for my size 12 hips. They are slightly roomy in my true size. I also own them in a size down for a more exact fit.

white shorts

Let’s look at tops to pack!

9. White notch-neck flutter sleeve top (Fits TTS, I’m in a small)

I love this top instead of a basic white t-shirt. It’s elevated with a flattering v-neck with contrast cotton flutter sleeves with cutout detail. When I first saw this shirt hanging in the store, the sleeves looked puffy, but a quick steam took care of that. This is a shirt you can dress up or down. It’s longer in length and flowy, so I like to front-tuck it. Substitution: If you prefer, pack a white tank top if it feels more like your personal style.

White notch-neck flutter sleeve top

10. White and blue striped boatneck tee (Size up since it fits small and straight. I’m in a medium)

You know I love a striped shirt for visual interest. Since my bottom half is larger than my top, the horizontal stripes and the boatneck help to create balanced proportions between my bottom and top half. I’m obsessed with this royal blue stripe. It’s so fresh for summer. It also comes in a dark navy. This shirt is cut fairly straight and is easy to leave untucked if you prefer. I’m wearing a medium.

White and blue striped boatneck tee

11. Black wedge tee (Relaxed fit, wearing XS)

This black shirt is a great alternative to a standard t-shirt. The cap sleeves cut across the arm at a higher spot creating a flattering and elongating effect on the arms. This is another shirt that you can easily wear untucked if you prefer.

Black wedge tee

12. White and navy striped tee (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

A striped tee is a great option for adding visual interest to a simple outfit. This white and navy striped tee is another casual option of a classic tee for when you want to be more dressed down.

White and navy striped tee

13. Gray t-shirt (Fits TTS, wearing a medium)

I love a light gray t-shirt as an alternative to white for everyday wear. This is a basic tee and another casual option for a more casual itinerary.

Gray t-shirt

14. Denim jacket (Fits big, wearing large for a looser fit)

If you want a light layer for air conditioned spaces, a denim jacket is the perfect length with dresses and also works with pants. This is a lighter blue wash and works so well with this color palette. It is slightly oversized for a casual look. You could also take a jacket with a hood if your destination is rainy.

denim jacket

15. Gray crewneck cardigan sweater (Similar linked fits TTS)

A gray crewneck cardigan is a more elevated option as a layering piece that works with all the dresses, tops, and jeans. A hip-length cardigan helps to define the waistline of a dress. In this outfit, I love the combination of gray, black, and cognac brown. It feels so rich.

Gray crewneck cardigan sweater

16. Brown bay slides (Fits TTS, wearing size 9)

These brown slide sandals are an elevated alternative to flip flops that you can wear to the pool or a winery and with shorts or a long dress. They’re super versatile and comfortable.

Brown bay slides

17. Tretorn sneakers (Fits slightly roomy in the toe-box, I prefer my true size 9)

These canvas Tretorn sneakers are flexible, lightweight, breathable, and easy to wear for moderate walking of less than 10,000 steps.

If you’re walking more than 10,000 steps for several days in a row, choose your favorite running shoe with a cushioned insole and your perfect amount of arch support.

When it comes to sizing, I own them in my true size and a half size down. Both fit but I prefer the roominess in the footbed of my true size. The smaller size can rub on the toes and heel. Wear them with no-show socks that come above your heel with a heel tab . A white pair of socks will blend in, so you barely notice them. Break them in at home first to ensure they work for your foot shape and have the comfort you need when traveling.

Tretorn sneakers

My pair came with striped and white laces. I love how the gum sole matches the brown of the bag. They look great with navy.

18. Two-strap slide sandals (Fits TTS, I’m wearing my usual size 9)

These canvas and rubber slides are a knock-off of two-strap Birkenstocks that require no breaking-in period. The rubber insole is super comfortable; you can wear it with a swimsuit or dress. The canvas body with gold buckles gives them a more elevated look than your standard leather Birkenstocks. You’ll be happy to have them when you want an easy alternative to sneakers.  They’re my go to easy shoes for running around town.

Two-strap slide sandals

19. Brown leather belt bag

When you’re sightseeing, a hands-free bag is a must. I prefer a belt bag to a crossbody because everything important stays securely right in front of your body. This is slim and hugs the body with space for your phone, sunglasses, and a small wallet. It’s made of thin pebbled leather and has an adjustable strap. The shape and clasp give it an equestrian vibe that I love.

Brown leather belt bag

20. Optional: Brown faux woven tote bag

I’m including an inexpensive brown woven tote bag because you don’t have to worry about getting gelato on it or scratching it up. It’s super lightweight, rolls up in your bag, and takes little space. From time to time, you may want a tote bag if you’re going shopping or want to carry a ton of snacks and a light water bottle. If you carry a lot of stuff daily, go for a travel backpack instead to be hands-free.

Brown faux woven tote bag

21. A baseball cap

A classic summer outfit for me includes a baseball cap for shade. Anytime I’m out in the sun walking for an extended period, I wear a hat. This Paris hat from Anthropologie is my absolute favorite. It’s chic and perfect for a bad hair day or when it’s misting out, and I don’t want to carry an umbrella or wear a hood. This one snaps open and closed, and I hang it from my belt bag if I’m not using it. It adds a chic, sporty look to any outfit.

A baseball cap

22. Optional: A woven fedora (Similar linked)

A woven fedora is a stylish alternative to a baseball cap for a little bit of shade. It’s light and comfortable to wear when it’s hot out.

23. Optional: Reversible belt

This Amazon reversible belt is a bestseller and gives you two color options, which is great when you’re traveling.

24. Gold bauble necklace and gold coin necklace

This inexpensive gold statement necklace elevates simple outfits for day or night. Wear it alone or layer it with a gold coin necklace like I do here.

28 Summer Capsule Wardrobe Staples That Are Just Impossibly Cool

By Talia Abbas

collage of street style and summer wardrobe essentials

Real talk: Warm-weather dressing isn’t always as effortless as throwing on a dress and slippers, but a summer capsule wardrobe can help you stylishly navigate the very hot and humid spaces—and the most refrigerated ones—with ease.

The trick to building out the ideal summer capsule wardrobe is focusing on fabrics and silhouettes. Just as in spring you gravitate towards wardrobe essentials that lend themselves well to layering, for peak temperatures you want breathable, lightweight materials, like linen , cotton, and silk, that move easily and feel good on skin—and don’t trap heat. When it comes to fit, anything loose and flowy usually works. (It’s little surprise that one of the most popular summer fashion trends is relaxed suiting.) And don’t sweat the length: Midi and maxi styles tend to be just as—if not more—comfortable than minis, while tailored shorts (and jorts) read more appropriate than cutoffs in semiformal settings.

Our top picks:

  • Best Tank Top: Free People Kate Tee , $38
  • Best T-Shirt: Hanes Essential T-Shirt (4-Pack) , $16

The best part about dressing for the season, though, is all the colorful accessories that come out to play. A great beach bag , a charming woven tote , and stackable summer jewelry —these are small staples that pack a punch with a simple look—and tend to get a ton of wear.

To make the next few weeks as fuss-free as possible (at least when it to comes dressing for the heat), we rounded up all the warm-weather essentials you need for a stylish summer—check them out below.

A Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Will Keep You From Overpacking

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and packable slip dresses to walking sandals and everyday sneakers , you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane , Lulus , Buck Mason , Teva , and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your section of choice.

The classic button-down

  • The perfect short

The lightweight denim

  • The breathable tank top
  • The midi dress

The exercise dress

  • The white sneaker

The walking sandal

The comfortable heel.

  • The quality bathing suit

The crossbody bag

The basic tee.

Every traveler needs a favorite tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, jeans, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). For something a little more polished than the fit of a classic cut tee, a seamless bodysuit tucks neatly into every pair of bottoms and looks flattering  on every body type.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool, or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down looks put together and keeps you cool.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

The perfect short

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. We turned to a few of our favorite brands, like Buck Mason, Everlane, and Lululemon, to bring you the perfect pair of shorts you'll actually want to wear on a hot day.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

While not always necessary if you’re traveling to a particularly hot destination, it wouldn’t be a list of essentials without including a pair of tried-and-true denim, like these straight-leg jeans from Madewell and classic Levi’s. These pairs can be worn and washed again and again—they only get better with age.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

The linen pant

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

The breathable tank top

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I have it in multiple colors). Nike and activewear brand Vuori make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

The midi dress

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Mara Hoffman’s mega-popular wrinkle-resistant popcorn dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus and Abercrombie. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a chic day-time outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel afterwards. I love that these have built-in shorts underneath so they're just as practical as they are cute.

The white sneaker

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Veja, Everlane, Allbirds, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for all of them.

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without leaving you with blisters, and that still leaves you looking put together. Sandals from Teva fit the bill, with a variety of color options available and some designed specifically for hiking . Our editors also rely on Birkenstocks once the weather turns warm—these classic sandals last for years.

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in.

The quality bathing suit

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece (bonus points if there’s some ruching, like this blue J.Crew suit has). The brand makes comfortable swim trunks for men, too; we also love the beachy board shorts from Fair Harbor.

To carry all of your essentials, you’ll need a versatile bag that transitions well from day to night. The Coach Tabby bag, Cuyana Saddle bag, and Tory Burch Pebbled crossbody are a few great options, whether you’re headed to a museum or are shopping for souvenirs. If you’re planning to be a bit more active, our editors swear by the Lululemon Everywhere belt bag —it has a cult following for a reason.

Inspire My Style

A Casual Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Women Over 50

Last Updated on April 23, 2024 by Candi Randolph

As I was gazing into my closet the other day, dreaming about the changing season and warmer temperatures, I thought how wonderful it would be to wiggle my nose and poof! A perfectly curated summer capsule wardrobe would appear.

No…nothing happened with the wiggle of the nose. But it got me to thinking about what I might have in my current wardrobe that could become a part of this seasonal group of clothes and accessories. So I decided to create my ultimate summer capsule wardrobe, on paper anyway. It’s a great start to a plan that just might come to fruition over time.

summer capsule wardrobe for women over 50

Who created the concept of a capsule wardrobe? A woman by the name of Susie Faux coined the term in the 1970s . She was frustrated with the lack of well-made clothing available at the time. The capsule wardrobe was catapulted into the limelight in 1985 when ‘Seven Easy Pieces’ were introduced by designer Donna Karan.

When you think about it, unless you’re a fashionista who must absolutely have the latest, greatest fashion trends hanging on your closet, a small collection of timeless, interchangeable pieces could serve many of us very well.

How many pieces should a capsule wardrobe include? If you do some research on the subject you’ll find a variety of recommendations, from as little as 10 pieces (what??) to about 50 pieces. Ultimately, it’s up to you.

And, in this instance, we’re creating a seasonal summer capsule wardrobe , so if you live in a climate that includes a colder weather season, this won’t be your complete wardrobe.

That’s how I approached this project, as I currently live in a 4-season climate. I wanted enough variety to cover all of the potential opportunities to dress in more than yoga pants and a workout top (my typical in-the-office by myself wardrobe choice).

Ultimately, my ideal summer capsule wardrobe includes 20 pieces:

  • 1 pair of linen pants
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 pair of jean shorts
  • 2 tank tops
  • 2 t-shirt tops
  • 4 pairs of shoes

A capsule wardrobe is based on personal preference, personal style , and lifestyle, so my choices wouldn’t necessarily be 100% workable for you. But, you can see the pieces, get a feel for the logic behind the selections, and also see a number of styled outfits that are possible as a result of the selections.

If you click on a link and then make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

A Casual Summer Capsule Wardrobe

So, let’s take this casual summer capsule wardrobe and put it to the test. How versatile will it be when putting outfits together? My style of living, and dressing, is quite casual, so when I’m going to put a look together it will most likely be for entertaining family and friends at my home, heading out to do a little shopping, going to church, maybe out for a meal.

How did I do with my outfit styles? Well, I could have put about 100 combinations together, so that tells me that my selections were good as far as mixing and matching of the tops, bottoms, and shoes. That’s what you’re looking to accomplish with a summer capsule wardrobe , or any type of capsule wardrobe.

If there is a piece in the collection that never seems to work, it might not belong. Fortunately, I didn’t encounter that problem with this collection.

You’ll notice that some pieces I used more than once, to show the flexibility of the individual pieces. I also included some basic jewelry and accessories to show how to simply and easily complete an outfit. Again, they are versatile and functional in a number of different ways.

First, here is an overview of the pieces in my summer capsule wardrobe by type:

bottom pieces in my capsule wardrobe

Being a casual type girl, I always want a pair of jeans and denim shorts in my wardrobe. The navy linen slacks are perfect for a little bit dressier occasion, and the longer length navy shorts will always come in handy.

I love the idea of a skort, and this is where I’m comfortable wearing white as the bottom piece of an outfit. With my midlife body shape , white pants is not a choice I’d typically make. But the skort? Yep. It’s comfortable and offers a summery look that is still flattering .

It’s easy to get carried away with tops, so I tried to include the pieces that I knew would be worn, based on my lifestyle. I always want a tank top or two, for layering purposes when I’m out and about. A white short sleeve top is a wardrobe staple, and the rose linen is a pretty color to add to an overall neutral summer capsule wardrobe.

One bright floral keeps things interesting, a blue/white narrow stripe top is always a good choice to create a classic look, and the the wide-sleeve linen top is comfy yet stylish.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

Staying true to the theme of classic navy and white, the sweaters and jacket are versatile options that suit my lifestyle.

In the warmer months a simple cardigan works really well for me, and can be dressed up if needed, or not. Either way, it offers additional coverage for the body shape , some function, and completes the layered style.

If I have just one dress to choose, this will be it. Simple, classic lines, about knee-length, sleeveless to allow for the warm days, with the option of either sweater to finish the outfit and take the chill off. Perfect!

My goal was to find a maximum of 4 pairs of shoes that would offer the versatility to complete any outfit combination in my summer capsule wardrobe.

As I was creating my unique outfits , they did not disappoint!

I always have to have some sneakers, and these espadrille sneakers from Target were the perfect choice. Then, two pairs of slip on sandals that can go with virtually any outfit combination + a cute pair of ballet flats complete the ‘shoe capsule’.

Is a Capsule Wardrobe the Right Choice for You?

#1 navy & marigold with dragonfly accents.

casual summer outfit with navy linen pants

navy linen pants | sweater blazer | marigold tank | slip on sandals | dragonfly earrings | cat eye sunglasses

Navy wide-leg high-waist linen pants are a wardrobe staple that offer such flexibility in warmer weather. The bright marigold tank provides the vibrance, and the dragonfly earrings plus cat eye sunglasses add the fun.

And, how cool is this open-front sweater-blazer? Longer length, cotton blend that can work in just about any weather, with bracelet length sleeves and patch pockets.

#2 Classic Denim & White

casual denim summer capsule wardrobe outfit

jeans | wide sleeve linen t-shirt | denim jacket | ballet flats | beaded earrings

I don’t know about your summer capsule wardrobe, girlfriend, but mine will always include a comfy pair of jeans. That’s part of my personal style. The white wide-sleeve t-shirt can be worn on the outside or tucked in, and I love the funky, colorful beaded bangle earrings. Simple ballet flats and a denim jacket to handle a cooler evening are all that is needed.

#3 Casually Stylish for Day Into Night

summer outfit for a capsule wardrobe including a dress

draped sleeveless dress | white cardigan 3/4 length sleeve | crystal sliders | straw tote | beaded earrings

When I spotted this jewel neck, sleeveless, knee-length draped dress, I knew it was ‘the one’ for the capsule wardrobe. Why? Well, it looks awesome just as is, it can be dressed up if desired, or kept casual as in this look. Perfect for afternoon lunch, an outdoor dining experience, a simple gathering, or a shopping excursion.

The straw tote, colorful beaded earrings, and clear strappy sandal are fun finishes to the look.

#4 Fun with Navy & White

navy and white summer outfit for women over 50

white skort | striped boatneck t-shirt | navy sweater blazer | ballet flats | straw tote | seaside bracelet set

It’s sort of a preppy look, isn’t it? The white skort, navy and white boatneck top, and sweater blazer are a wonderful combination of style and comfort.

Skorts are great…the look of a skirt with the comfort of shorts. Works for me!

#5 Afternoon Excursion with a Pop of Color

summer capsule wardrobe outfit suggestion

jean shorts | floral top | white cardigan | sneakers | green mini-hoop earrings | wire rim sunglasses

We’re keeping it casual with the look, using jean shorts, sneakers, and a white 3/4 sleeve open cardigan. Then, pop! The vibrant garden print top adds the surprise, and can work well on cooler weather days (or when the a/c is cranked down and it’s freezing inside!).

I could wear this outfit all day and all evening, and be nice and comfy.

#6 Denim with a Twist

casual outfit with denim for women over 50

jeans | seaport blue tank top | denim jacket | sneakers | metal statement necklace | blue hoop earrings

Denim takes a little twist with blue on blue and a statement necklace. The seaport blue tank is a beautiful rich color that balances well with the statement necklace and blue hoop earrings.

Any of the shoes would work. I chose the espadrille sneakers for this outfit.

#7 Soft & Subtle Style

womens summer capsule wardrobe outfit suggestion

white skort | weathered rose linen t-shirt | white cardigan | crystal sliders | beach gem necklace

Classic yet casual, the weathered rose linen top adds soft color to the otherwise white collection from the capsule wardrobe. For me, it would be a great choice when I have just a wee bit of color from the sun.

Having a 3/4 length cardigan is almost always on my ‘must-have’ list. Not too heavy, but just enough to ward of the chill of evening air or the over enthusiastic air conditioner.

Another outfit that can be worn comfortably from morning ’til night.

#8 Sporty Look in Shorts

casual outfit from a summer capsule wardrobe

linen blend navy shorts | white short sleeve top | navy sweater blazer | ballet flats | cat eye sunglasses | beach gem necklace | straw tote

Longer length navy linen-blend shorts are the foundation of this sporty, casual outfit. A white round neck t-shirt is always a flexible option. The sweater blazer adds just the right amount of layering.

And, the accessories add some additional style and fun.

Clever Capsule Wardrobe: Stylish Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

Capsule Wardrobe Travel Clothes for Women

I know that for most of us, travel isn’t in the cards right now. With the recent spike in cases, most of us have resigned ourselves to the fact that if we didn’t make a quick trip earlier this summer, we probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to travel to destinations unknown for a while longer. But darn it, that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about it and plan ahead. Because as bleak as things might have seemed over the last year, there’s going to come a time when Covid isn’t at the top of our conversation list.

I decided to look ahead to future times when I get to pack a bag and hit the road. I began to daydream about where I’d like to go and what adventures I’d like to experience. That got me reminiscing about my favorite trips that I’ve been on in the past. One lifelong highlight was a family vacation cruising to Costa Maya and Belize. Now, I am not sure how many of you have ever cruised before, but if you have- you know how small the rooms can be. Even the cruise staff crack jokes about it, and with 4 of us to a cabin, plus all our luggage and its contents, you can only imagine the tight fit.

The funny thing is, on this particular ship, the bathrooms were quite spacious! My point of all this is it got me thinking that although travel is fun and relaxing, packing and what to wear can be a real source of frustration. We all want comfort and function in our travel clothes, but they need to still be fashionable, or at least look halfway decent in all those vacation photos. So, unless you travel Downton Abbey style, butler included, you are schlepping and packing your luggage yourself.

Capsule It!

Building a capsule wardrobe is one of the best ways to save space, lighten your luggage load, and still look great. Creating clothing capsules is a clever and easy way to travel with fashion versatility. Once you get the idea of how capsules work, you’ll be able to plan your style and function around them and give yourself tons of options. Best of all, you’ll save space in your luggage for all the shopping you will do on your trip!

A capsule is a group of 5-12 pieces that work in combination with each other.

Travel Capsule

If your travel wardrobe is too cluttered, cleverly use the formula below to help pair it down, which will also make deciding what to wear so much easier.

Tips to Capsule Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

1. start packing 1-2 weeks before your trip..

This gives you plenty of time to create your wardrobe and map out when you might be wearing each outfit. I personally will jot down each outfit for each day or activity. This is the key to not overpack. Look at your itinerary and plan accordingly.

We love the Pack This! Pad, from Knock Knock, $7, to be able to visualize your needs easily.

Knock Knock Pack This Pad

2. Packing for changing temperatures can be bulky, so unless you are heading to a cold-weather destination, my favorite piece to pack to ward off a chill is a cashmere wrap.

It packs lightly, can keep you warm, especially if you layer, and it doubles as a modesty piece that you can wear to cover your shoulders when visiting cultural churches, temples, or other sacred places.

JCREW Oversized Cashmere Wrap

3. Take 1 medium/large carry-on tote with essentials such as a book, electronics, I.D., and other items you do not want to chance left in your checked luggage, and a small crossbody bag that you can use as your day bag on your sightseeing excursions.

This way, you can leave your larger bag in the hotel and only carry the bare minimum out and about for the day. The smaller crossbody can double for your wallet in the larger tote.

Madewell Medium Transport Tote

4. Let’s talk neutral shoes, as these little beauties are essential to a great trip.

Shoes are necessary for every vacation, but they can take up a lot of space in your luggage – and comfort is a must! I opt for shades of neutral, specifically nude, so they go with everything, or you can do a pop of color if you are keeping your outfits neutral. For the heel-loving ladies like me, the best bet is a wedge, as they can easily pair with dresses, shorts, or pants. Nude or black walking wedges  and Gladiator Wedges are two great choices. If flats are more your style, then look for something that can easily transition from your all-day outfits to dresses for your evening dinner. This pointy toe Vionic flat makes a great choice, and with so many colors and space-saving styles, you can easily fit a few pairs in.

Madewell Sidewalk Low-Top Sneakers in Leather

5. Lastly, choose pieces from your travels that you love to be in and that are comfortable.

Think of items you would wear at home. While I’m traveling, I love to find shawls and pashminas or a unique piece of jewelry as a useful memento of my trip – it saves space in my luggage on the way there, it is an easy keepsake to bring home. It is also something you can wear back home to remember your trip.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

  • 1 x Jacket/Cardigan/Pashmina
  • 4 x Pants/Skirts/Shorts
  • 8 x Tops (includes t’s for layering)
  • Stay neutral, so they go with each outfit. I love nude or tan shoes.
  • Accessories are a great way to change up your capsule, and they don’t take up a lot of space, so have fun here!
  • Don’t forget to add other essentials such as swimwear , workout wear , coat, or even gloves depending on your destination/weather.
  • Substituting a dress instead of a top or bottom will reduce the total number of outfits. You may want to add a dress in as an additional piece to increase your variety, but remember it must work with the jacket/cardigan.
  • Look to find a common color in patterns, so mixing is easier. Bottoms in shades of neutral such as black, navy, or tan can go with everything. Each piece should be able to be mixed and matched with at least 3 other pieces in your packed wardrobe (except for the accessories).

While an actual trip might not be on the near horizon, sale opportunities are on the way. As you think about what you’d pack in a travel capsule wardrobe, you might find that there are some gaps in your options. Take advantage of upcoming Labor Day sales or even look ahead to Black Friday for the chance to fill the gaps while saving some money. It never hurts to plan ahead and even allow yourself to dream of sitting beach-side somewhere, sipping a tropical drink.

hi I'm lynzy

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

Hello + welcome to this tiny space on the internet! I created this blog (+ changed the name twice since) 14 years ago as a creative outlet from my career in the emergency room as a PA. After spending the past 7 (or so) years on social media outlets, I have decided to delete all of the ones associated with this blog and get back to the heart of blogging.

Mom style , motherhood , style, june 5, 2022.

The 2022 summer capsule wardrobe is here! Of course it is mom friendly since I am a mother of 4 who loves to look put together but also rarely does heels or other “fancier” clothing. I truly love putting together these capsule wardrobes because not only does it give me inspiration for my own wardrobe but they’re really fun to organize and think through. I will be putting a capsule wardrobe together like this for each season (and each trip we go on). I hope that you find them helpful! At the end of this post you will see 15 outfit ideas using items from the capsule. I could probably come up with at least 15 more making 1 outfit for every day of the month but I kept it at 15. If I have enough interest, I can also put together a pregnancy/ nursing friendly capsule as well for each season, just let me know in the comments or send me an email!

2022 Summer Capsule Wardrobe + Outfit Ideas

Many of these items are ones in my own wardrobe that I love and can assure that it’s great quality and well loved. With each item listed below you will also see a widget with other items that are similar in all different price ranges. Some of the items in the capsule are expensive and investment pieces so I wanted to make sure that I included similar items that are at different price points.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cardigan | try HELLOFIFTEEN for first users or BRINGITHOME for 15% off | I have been eyeing this cardigan for years but the price tag is STEEP. I finally scooped one up for $100 less on Poshmark with some money I had made from clothing I sold! Woot!

Similar ones at different price points below.

Rag + Bone Open Stitch Sweater | I love a great open knit sweater because it’s cozy but not overwhelmingly hot. I love the way that a sweater like this looks with denim or layered over a dress

ABLE Denim Jacket | Code: lynzyandco15 for 15% off | I have had this jacket for years and LOVE it. It has a lived in feel to it that makes it feel like you’ve owned it for 10 years. It fits TTS

Similar ones at different price points below

Linen Resort Shirt | A simple linen button front tee that can be worn with pretty much any bottom

Fitted Ribbed Tank | I have this tank in several colors because I love the higher neck and it looks gorgeous with a pair of denim or a skirt

Linen Tank | A linen tank that’s slightly cropped like this one looks adorable with a pair of shorts or denim

Basic White Tee | I love my Advocate the label tee because it has a great fit and it’s not see through

Dresses + Jumpsuit

Puff Sleeve Scoop Midi Dress | This midi dress has the most flattering fit to it and it can easily be dressed up for an event or down for a casual day with sneakers

Shorter Loose Dress | I love having a shorter loose dress to just throw on. I always wear a pair of biker shorts underneath as well.

Jenni Kayne Midi Summer Dress | try HELLOFIFTEEN for first users or BRINGITHOME for 15% off | This dress is another score off of Poshmark. It has a gorgeous fit to it. A flowy summer dress is a must for any capsule wardrobe.

Black Jumpsuit | I don’t know why but I love a good jumpsuit. Sure, they’re a pain in the ass when you need to use the bathroom but they’re so dang cute!

Denim Shorts | These Agolde Vintage Long Shorts are my favorite shorts I have ever owned. I got my typical size!

Linen Shorts | I came across a high rise pair from Gap a few months ago and they are a DREAM. Sadly, they sold out fast, otherwise I would have gotten them in more colors than just black!

Basic Long Denim | I have had this Agolde pair for awhile and I love the way that they fit! I am linking my other favorite denim below

Reformation Mason Pant | I discovered these through my friend Karla. They are incredibly comfortable and can be worn dressed up or down. I am currently having mine hemmed at the bottom because they’re a bit too long on me (5’5). I debated getting the petite ones but they’re also smaller in the waist and I didn’t want that! I went up one size in the regular length.

Midi Skirt with Slit | the slit on these midi skirts makes them incredibly flattering and I love wearing mine year round with a sweater in the winter and a simple tank in the summer.

One piece bathing suit | A classic one piece black swimsuit will always win

Linen Button Front Cover-up | I have this cover-up and love it’s simplicity. It can also be worn as a top – tie it in the front with some denim shorts!

Brown leather slides | A necessity for those outfits you want to carry a brown handbag

Black leather toe ring slides | This brand makes a HIGH quality leather sandal – the toe ring on these is a great addition

Leather sneakers | 15% off code: 15HGC | I rave about these constantly and they’re probably the most worn shoes in my closet

Bags + Accessories

Clare V Moyen Bag | I have this bag in black leather and love the size of it. This brown woven one has been on my list for a long time! 😉

Woven Raffia Tote | The perfect tote for the beach or every day use

Belt Bag to wear crossbody | This is a great bag for any type of travel, hiking, a day out with the kids. It’s large enough to fit all the passports, phone, wallet, emergency items and keeps them close by.

Chloe Stud Earrings | My earrings I have worn and loved for years. Simple + perfect

Herringbone Chain Necklace | A simple chain necklace to go with every outfit

Raffia Fedora | In case you’re a hat girl like me, this fedora is great for the beach

Beach Perfume by Bobbi Brown | My favorite summer perfume, once you smell it, you’ll know why

Ray-ban Sunglasses | My favorite sunglasses are a tie between these and my Karen Walkers!

A basic white t-shirt is invaluable during the summer months. It’s the perfect layering piece under a jacket. You can go with a classic crew neck or you can try some variations. This Nordstrom Everyday V-Neck T-Shirt is a very flattering style, or you may prefer a scoop, bateau, puff or 3/4 length sleeves or a long sleeve t-shirt. Find a t-shirt that is the most comfortable for you.

A tank is a great layering piece for when the weather gets hot. I like to wear one under an oversized shirt and I remove the shirt when it gets warm. This tank top from ALLSAINTS is perfect because the straps are wider which will keep your bra straps under cover.

Button Down Shirt in White or Stripe

A menswear style shirt is so fresh-looking in summer and fall! A crisp white or stripe cotton shirt will look fabulous with jeans or dress pants. This H&M Oversized Poplin Shirt comes in white, blue stripes and other colors for only $24.99. And oversized button downs are a huge trend for Spring ’23.

Black and white is lovely but summer is time for a fun print “going out” top. Choose a bright floral or bold color. I like this floral print top from Vince Camuto because it is pairs well with jeans or dressier pants and has long sleeves.

I prefer a lightweight jacket like this Halogen® Twill Blazer . Between chilly nights and air conditioning, I find myself wearing a jacket all the time during the summer as well as fall. This one is perfect for work and play and can be worn with everything in this capsule wardrobe.

I don’t wear shorts any longer, so a lightweight pair of jeans like these Madewell The Perfect Vintage Straight Leg Jeans are indeed…perfect for this capsule wardrobe! The high waist is on-trend and the looser styling will keep you comfortable in summer weather.

It’s important to have a great fitting pair of black or white pants to wear in summer. You can see how these NYDJ Marilyn Linen Blend Trousers can dress up any of the tops or tees in this collection. Opt for a style that suits your body type. Wide leg pants are ideal because they keep you cool. Besides pants you can substitute this piece in the capsule collection with a black or white pencil or midi skirt.

The perfect summer dress is one you can wear with sneakers for a walk in the park or with heels and added jewelry for dinner or a party. I like a short sleeve black midi dress like this Nordstrom Stretch Cotton Midi T-Shirt Dress . You may prefer a bright solid color or a sun-dress with a print , but whatever dress you choose, make sure it is one you can wear for multiple occasions.

Speaking of sneakers, a classic pair of white kicks like these Adidas Superstar Shoes , are a tried-and-true style. However a slip-on style or any pair of sneakers are a must-have for the spring and summer months.

One other shoe style necessity is a pair of sandals that can dress up your look, but still offer comfort. These Sorel Cameron Wedge Sandals fit the bill. You may prefer a pair of flat slides or sandals or a block heel style. Just make sure that they are is easy to walk in.

8 thoughts on “Summer to Fall Capsule Wardrobe For Women Over 50: 10 Easy Pieces”

What’s so funny is that I probably have several capsules in my closet. I just never think of them that way.

You should!

Funny thing … I went through my closet this week and actually got rid of all the clothes that I haven’t worn in years. Now my closet is almost empty. Time to go shopping!

That’s one great thing about emptying your closet! You get to buy more! Look for classic styles when it comss to your basics. They will serve you well and for longer.

This is a nice capsule wardrobe

Yeah! Glad you think so.

I like the capsule idea. I’m 70 but found this selection for 50 a bit dowdy. Do you have a capsule for my age group but a bit younger looking?

I know that capsule collections can look a bit boring since they are basics, but you can build on the pieces with younger-looking accessories and add your own personality. For example, add a fun belt to the dress to add shape to it or wear colorful heels with the jeans. We show other outfits on Fountain of 30 that you may find to be more stylish.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe:

Before implementing a capsule wardrobe, getting dressed was frustrating and frankly, difficult! I had a closet full of unworn clothes and felt like I had nothing to wear. As a busy mom, I was tired of wasting time staring at my closet.

Now that I have a capsule wardrobe, I get dressed quickly, without the frustration. This is because the pieces in my closet are coordinating and can be matched easily together. Below are a few other benefits of a capsule:

-Purchase Less:  b y simplifying your wardrobe and only buying what you need, you’ll save money on items that are only worn a few times and reduce impulse purchasing.

-Reduce Stress: with fewer items in your closet, it’s easier to get dressed & keep your closet organized.

-Shop sustainably: b y thinking intentionally about fashion purchases and prioritizing quality over quantity, you’re helping to promote a more sustainable lifestyle and reduce wasteful impact of unworn clothing.

-Feel Good: when you have a clean & polished look that is inherent with a capsule wardrobe, you can be confident and love what you wear.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

First, start with the basics. The foundation of a great capsule that can be refreshed each season are wardrobe staples. Staple pieces are timeless items that can be worn throughout several seasons. This post goes over everything you need to know about a staple wardrobe. For each capsule, I start by selecting staples that can be worn during the current season. After that, other seasonal items are added to complete the capsule.

If you want an in-depth capsule wardrobe guide, be sure to grab a copy of the 2022 Summer Capsule Wardrobe E-Book.

CAPSULE E-BOOKS INCLUDE:

Capsule Wardrobe Pieces

A seasonal capsule typically has 20-30 pieces. The Summer season requires less layers, so this season has the highest item count for the added tops that cannot be worn together.  My 2022 Summer Capsule Wardrobe below has 28 pieces. In total there are 9 tops, 3 layers, 2 dresses, 5 shorts, a skirt, a pair of white jeans, and 7 shoes. As with any capsule, you can make it your own! If you don’t wear dresses, swap them out for more shorts or skirts!

The exact items are linked in the Summer capsule e-book to make shopping easy! I will link a few of my favorite pieces in the remainder of this post.

In the guide, I link to two separate retailers in an effort to accommodate multiple price points and to provide a second option if your size is unavailable at one retailer. PLEASE NOTE , the e-book is regular size. If you need tall, petite, or plus sizes I cannot guarantee the exact links in the guide will be available in your size. However, the e-book can be used as a guide to shop similar pieces at your favorite retailers!

Summer Capsule Wardrobe

This black tank top is one of my favorite pieces of the entire collection. This is the perfect summer capsule wardrobe tank top because it can be worn by itself or layered with a chambray or linen shirt. The versatility makes it great for casual wear or dressing up! Not only is it versatile, but it is also comfortable and super flattering.

If you want a tee shirt that is a step above your standard tee, try this gray off the shoulder tee ! The draping is so pretty, and I love the longer length. This one is comfortable for lounging around the house with biker shorts, or it can be dressed up with the white jeans and nude sandals!

These vintage style denim shorts are essential for this summer. Not only is the style very much on trend this year but these can be worn so many different ways. The high waist and 4″ inseam will offer maximum coverage without being too long. Perfect for trips to the zoo, running errands, play dates, and more! My favorite mom short retails at about $60, but they are worth it. These are my most worn shorts in the summer and therefore, the cost per wear is super low. Well worth the initial investment.

A classic pair of white jeans is also a must for the summer. These are a wardrobe staple, so I don’t feel the need to elaborate on why you should have a pair. You probably already do! My favorite white jean has a high rise and is not see through. As always, I recommend nude underwear with any white bottoms.

Another favorite is this white linen shirt . Linen is a must for any summer wardrobe because it is lightweight and breathable. I love having a light sleeve for cooler mornings and evenings. This is also great for dressing up if headed to church or brunch!

You guys!! Have you seen these athletic dresses with built in shorts !? Every mom’s dream dress. This dress has a built in romper underneath with a padded chest and pockets in the shorts! Getting dressed will not be any easier than when wearing this dress. In the summer capsule e-book, I style this with each of the layers and with a few of the tops! The oversized graphic tee is perfect for layering over dresses because it can be tied in the front to define your waist. Get this dress !

Lately, I have been more intentional when shopping and opting for sustainability whenever possible. Most sustainable brands utilize materials that are higher quality and will withstand the test of time and activities your kids get you into! I’ve found that spending a little bit more for sustainable everyday items, like shoes, means I won’t have to shop as often for replacements. These leopard shoes from Able are the perfect example. They do run small so size up at least one size. I usually wear a 10 and ordered an 11. They fit great after loosening up the laces a bit. LOVE THEM. Odds are good, these will be included in my Fall capsule wardrobe as well!

My 25-Piece Coastal-Style Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe

See how I created my Coastal Style capsule wardrobe, which includes tops, bottoms and shoes, based on the Coastal Style aesthetic. I’m sharing everything in my own personal capsule wardrobe here in this post.

For those of you that follow the Classy Yet Trendy blog, you know that I have been using a capsule wardrobe in my closet for several years . I absolutely love using a capsule wardrobe every season and by using a capsule wardrobe, I get dressed quickly and easily everyday. A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes and shoes, which all mix and match effortlessly with dozens of outfit combinations. Using a capsule wardrobe lets you focus on more important things in your life and takes the stress away from getting dressed.

Being that I work at home daily administering my Classy Yet Trendy website and social media, I wear casual clothes like jeans, casual pants, shorts and casual tops and layers. My job consists of many duties: working at my desk, doing photo sessions of clothes and shoes, moving about creating flatlays for Instagram, etc., so dresses or skirts are not feasible for my work-week lifestyle. On Sundays I wear clothes outside of my capsule wardrobe, since I wear skirts and dresses to church, in addition to wearing outfits from my capsule wardrobe since everyone dresses casual at our church.

Living in Alabama, our Summers are hot and humid. In hot and humid weather, you want to wear cool fabrics that breathe. It’s best to wear clothes that are loose and are made of natural fabrics like cotton and linen.

I created my capsule for my closet from the NEW women’s Coastal Vibes Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe . I included a few clothes and shoes from the Coastal Vibes capsule, some pieces I already had, plus a few extra pieces. I don’t live on the coast, but I do live in a river town and enjoy wearing light and airy clothes in the summer. You don’t have to live on the coast or near a beach to wear the Coastal Style!

The Coastal Vibes Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe is based on the “Coastal Grandmother” #coastalgrandmother style aesthetic. Lex Nicoleta gave this style a name to remember, “Coastal Grandmother”. As Lex says, “you don’t have to be a grandmother to wear coastal grandmother!” She has several videos all about  Coastal Grandmother on her TikTok channel ! I’m not exactly sure why she included “grandmother” in the phrase, maybe because the style of soft and flowy clothes are worn typically by older women who live a refined life in the Hamptons. But, anyone can wear this style!

Why I Chose A Navy Base & The Accent Colors

The base color in the Coastal Vibes Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe is navy, so I kept navy as the base color . You can use black as the base color by swapping the navy pieces with black ones.

The Coastal Vibes Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe includes a few clothes with blue and light green colors , so I also used the same colors.

If you need a complete wardrobe for the season, then you may enjoy using one of my “ready to wear” season capsule wardrobes available in the Capsule Wardrobe eBook Store !

What’s In My Own Capsule Wardrobe?

Here’s everything in my Coastal-Style Summer 2022 Capsule Wardrobe. I keep my capsule wardrobe on my wardrobe rack (similar) in my Studio Room. I also love using my wood hangers (similar) . If you follow me on Instagram (@classyyettrendy) , you will see the wardrobe rack behind me when I take my mirror photos. I had kept my capsule wardrobe in our walk-in closet, but I found it is easier for me to access in in my Studio Room when I am working taking photos and posting them on Instagram. That’s what’s great about using a capsule wardrobe, because you can hang everything on a clothes rack and put it in any room!

For my Summer 2022 capsule, I included 25 tops, bottoms and shoes.

Here are a few bags and accessories I’ll be wearing this Summer with my capsule wardrobe. I love Madewell’s Sydney Crossbody Bag in the “burnished caramel” color . I bought it a couple of weeks ago and have been carrying it everyday! It’s just the right size and has carry handles, plus a crossbody strap to wear either on your shoulder or crossbody style. I also bought Madewell’s NEW Transport Tote Straw Edition and I love the texture of this bag! It’s a great size to carry with you to the farmers market and shopping, plus you can carry it to the beach!

I bought this Packable Fedora Straw Hat last year and loved wearing it and I was happy to see this Canvas Bucket Hat so I can change up my hats when I am outside!

I’ll be sharing outfits I wear from this capsule on my Instagram @classyyettrendy !

This is such a cozy selection! I’m from the Caribbean (and a “dark winter” in color analysis jargon) so these muted colors are much too bland for me. However, that’s the beauty of having neutral core pieces. I can replace the “sea grass” for a “bottle green” and select more vibrant blues, and voila, a capsule that is more pleasing to my eyes and my soul. After seeing your post, I was able to pull out “my” version of a coastal wardrobe in a matter of minutes. I made these “style” changes to make it work for me: white boat shoes instead of taupe sandals, light brown strappy sandals instead of the huaraches, a fun, sea-glass inspired printed tee instead of the striped one, a navy skirt instead of denim shorts, and instead of the second pair of beige shorts, a flax-colored spaghetti-strap dress that I can layer on top of tees or top with a button-up shirt. I replaced some of the short-sleeved tops with eyelet-embroidered short-sleeved blouses and gauzy long-sleeved ones (a white and and a sky blue)…and that’s it! I’m ready for summer! Thank you for the inspiration. You’ve been great guidance in seeing the possibilities I already have in my wardrobe (and in creating a functional collection of office clothes, too…I’ve purchased a “teacher” and a “workwear” capsule e-book and they’ve been wonderfully helpful in putting together a cohesive wardrobe with which I can put together really good-looking outfits for both casual and dressier days.) Wishing you a wonderful summer! IR

I just found your blog and am curious about where you live?

I live in Alabama.

That’s great that you can make the substitutions to make it work for you! Have a great summer too!

Does the packable madewell hat really hold its shape after packing? I went into the store yesterday and tried on both those bags – on my wish list for sure! – and the hat. They are all fantastic; I’m just worried the hat will get super floppy after packing.

I personally haven’t packed the hat since I haven’t traveled with it yet. I love the color of the hat, the fedora style and it’s just the right size!

I love the coastal vibes capsule! Yesterday I started preparing for my fall capsule and I use the simplified but now I’m soooo excited to read there will be a fall coastal vibes capsule!!

How To Build A Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Fashion , featured , style at a certain age , summer.

summer travel capsule wardrobe 2022 over 50

Happy Sunday, ladies!  We've been gone for an entire week, but we're back---and excited to be.  I spent the week on Tybee Island, totally detached from work.  It was a great opportunity to recharge and refocus.  And believe me, I am and so is the company at large.  We're focusing on the Spring-to-Summer transition this week, and we're kicking things off with how to build a summer capsule wardrobe.

I'm big on capsule wardrobes because, with a little upfront thinking, they can take a lot of the difficulty out of dressing. Also, capsule wardrobes:

  • Save you time in the long run.
  • Provide you with endless flexibility.
  • Can save you money.

The idea beyond a capsule wardrobe is pretty simple:  a small selection of clothing that can be interchanged to create endless outfits.  Today's capsule wardrobe contains

  • 26 different items that are
  • primarily neutral based; and
  • feature all the summer staples, including shorts, dresses, and sandals.

I've mostly drawn from Talbots , Ann Taylor , Madewell , and J.Crew . From these items, I've put together 8 different outfits.  But the possibilities are truly endless---mix and match to your heart's desire.

And in addition to the summer capsule wardrobe, I've also put together my top 10 essential summer staples at the end of the post.  So, don't forget to check them out.

The Summary

Today features my summer capsule wardrobe

I've put together 8 different outfits from the capsule wardrobe, all of which are shoppable via text and image widgets

My top 10 summer essentials are at the end of the post, so don't miss them!

You’ll often hear me recommend this tip in our other blog posts at She Packs Lite, but it’s worth saying again. A high-quality suitcase is worth the investment. It’s one of the best ways to ensure that you’re setting yourself up for success, whether it’s for long trips or short trips. If this is your first time traveling in a long time, you might still be scraping by with an old suitcase. Sure, it gets the job done, but it might not be doing as much as it could for you.

I recommend spending the extra money on a durable, well-made suitcase. I always recommend a carry-on size because I prefer to never check my bag. In the event that you do have to check, you’ll want a bag that can handle it. It may be tossed around by baggage handlers and encounter all different kinds of conditions along your way. And of course, I’m all about packing light, so you should choose one that’s not too big and bulky. Having a suitcase that’s too big is a surefire way to packing more than you need.

Carry a Quality Carry-On / Personal Item

It doesn’t matter if this is going to be your only bag while traveling or if it’s just your one additional item that you get on flights. Your carry-on bag / personal item should be high-quality too. For short trips, some people challenge themselves to only bring personal item. With our packing tips, it’s totally doable. However, for long-term trips, you may need some extra room to make sure you have everything you need.

A carry-on bag, first and foremost, should be comfortable to carry. That may seem obvious from the name, but a lot of women choose their carry-on’s based on looks and not functionality. That over-the-shoulder bag might be stylish and chic. But, if it’s loaded up, after a while your shoulder is going to feel like it’s on fire. A two-strap bag or backpack can take the pressure off that shoulder that’s been singled out. In the end, it will be much more comfortable to carry your bag around the city or bringing your bags from the airport to your hotel.

Having a carry-on bag that has multiple pockets is helpful as well. On travel days you’ll need access to your passport and other travel documents. A few small zip pockets in the front can really help you stay organized. This will allow you to have easy access to all of your important documents and credit cards. And it will reduce the chance of you losing them by simply carrying them in your hand the whole time. A lost passport can really put a damper on a trip, so keep yourself organized with the help of your bags.

Use a Packing List

Packing without a list is another good way to guarantee that you pack too much. At first, you’re just packing essentials. The next thing you know, you’re throwing in four extra swimsuits and pairs of pants “just in case”. One good thing to keep in mind is asking yourself if you’ll actually wear something that you pack. If you don’t reach for it at home, it shouldn’t make it into your travel bag. Those pair of high heels may be cute, but if you don’t want to wear them on a date night at home, you won’t want to wear them on the cobblestone streets of a foreign city.

You can be strategic about your outfits too. You also don’t need an entirely different outfit for every day of the week. This not only takes up way too much room in your suitcase, but it also leaves you with unworn clothes that could free up precious space. Following my 5-4-3-2-1 packing method to bring mix and match outfits and therefore pack less.

Need a packing list? You can Get my Ultimate Packing List for Female Travelers Over 50 below:

Pack a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

I mentioned that a 5-4-3-2-1 packing method will help you pack light and only include the basics. This method is a type of travel capsule wardrobe. You can read more about making a travel capsule wardrobe here . This method of packing allows you a certain number of clothing items per category (i.e. five shirts, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes, etc…).

It’s especially important when you’re packing your travel capsule that you stick to a single color scheme or palette. That way you have the option to mix and match items and wear each piece more than one time. All of your different pieces will work together instead of one shirt only matching with one specific pair of pants. Using a travel capsule doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style. You wear each piece more than once, but your accessories like jewelry and scarves give your outfits a little something extra. These items are also small, so you won’t have to worry about taking up too much space with them.

Don’t Forget to Pack the Basics

Many travel websites will tell you that you should start with a base layer like tank tops or sports bras. This is a good tip for some trips, especially ones in cold weather. In the winter months, a base layer of Merino wool can be worn with multiple outfits and it will be functional as well. The 5-4-3-2-1 method will help you start out with a good foundation of items that you should definitely have for your wardrobe. More specifically wardrobe outfits: tops, bottoms, and shoes, etc. Packing specific amount for each of these clothing items will get you off to a great start if you’re packing light for the first time.

In addition to your wardrobe pieces and your larger clothing items, the right number of pairs of underwear and socks should also make it on your packing list. Since these items are a lot smaller, it’s okay to pack a clean pair for each day if you’re not planning on doing laundry over the course of your trip. When flying, we’ll also throw in an extra pair of underwear and socks in our carry-on bag in the (hopefully) unlikely event that your checked bag is lost. Pants and shirts can be re-worn if you have to make a detour in your travels. You’ll be much more comfortable if you have a clean pair of underwear to change into if your travel plans change suddenly.

Consider Your Clothing Preference As An Over 50 Woman

I have joked for years that I am having “my own personal climate crisis”. That means that on any given day, regardless of if I am in a warm climate or cold, my body temperature may tell me the opposite of what is actually happening. Travel clothes that layer well are key here. I always bring a packable down jacket, you just never know what the evenings will be like or if my body decides its freezing out.

Know What Activities You’re Going To Do

If you want to go into any Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, you’ll have to be pretty covered up as a woman. These ornate temples are worth a visit, so your clothing shouldn’t stop you from going inside and appreciating them. It’s going to be hot, so make sure you have lightweight clothes that cover your arms and legs. This also goes for Catholic churches in different parts of the world. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture of these buildings in Europe and South America is beautiful. They are definitely worth stopping by and you will need to respect the dress code.

Walking is a popular way to see many different cities because you can experience them just like a local. If you do plan on doing a lot of walking on your trip, make sure that the shoes you pack can handle it. There’s not much you can do about blisters once they happen. And, they can make your day miserable so it’s best if you just avoid them altogether if you can. It’s a good idea to make a cute and comfortable pair of sneakers one of the pairs of shoes that you pack.

Research the Weather and Climate in Your Destination

This seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes we assume what the weather will be based on what we already know about a destination. yes, it’s probably a safe bet to pack mostly swimsuits and shorts for a vacation in the Bahamas. Many other destinations have distinct seasons, and you’ll want to pack accordingly based on when you’re going to be traveling. Spring and fall can be especially unpredictable seasons in many different countries. You don’t want to get caught in some bad weather and not have any appropriate clothes. Frankly it is always good to bring a lightweight rain jacket in the event that there is unexpected showers.

Even in warm climates or places that you’re expecting to have good weather, I still recommend bringing one jacket. Small lightweight jackets usually fit pretty well in your suitcase if you roll them up, so you don’t have to worry about taking up too much space. If you don’t need it, that’s great, but it’s always your best option to be prepared.

Make Your Outerwear Match With Every Outfit

In colder weather, of course, jackets and coats can be much bulkier than a light summer sweater. This is why it’s even more important for your outwear to work with every outfit. Choose a jacket or coat that is a neutral color. That way it is sure to match every outfit combination you come up with while traveling.

If you find that you’re struggling to fit a bulkier jacket in your suitcase, one great packing tip I frequently recommend is to wear your coat while traveling. This will free up a lot of space in your suitcase and leave room for other things that you want to pack. In warmer climates or summer months, you probably won’t have the packing problem because your jacket will be much lighter. You should still make sure that it’s something that you can mix and match with different outfits over the course of your trip.

It’s always nice to have a stylish and packable rain jacket. You can find my favorites here.

Bring Multipurpose Shoes

In our travel capsule packing method you need to be strategic about your shoes! As women, the temptation to overpack shoes can be strong. I firmly believe that for every trip you take, whether it’s long or short, that you only need three pairs of shoes. I limit my shoes because they can be some of the bulkiest things that you pack. Unlike other clothing items, I can’t roll shoes or compress them to make them smaller, so it’s important to pack fewer pairs to make sure that you’re packing light for your trips.

Walking Shoes

I mentioned earlier that a good, comfortable pair of sneakers should be at least one pair of shoes that make it on your packing list . In order to make sneakers match with more outfits, I recommend bringing a pair of cute street sneakers. You’ll often see Europeans wearing these kinds of shoes. They’re not athletic or running sneakers, so they can be dressed up if you choose, but they’re also comfortable so you won’t have a problem wearing them around all day.

Other Shoes

The other two pairs of shoes are up to you. If you’re traveling in the summer months, a comfortable pair of stylish sandals can be a good option because they can be dressed up for a nicer dinner or dressed down for a day at the beach. If you’re traveling in the winter, you might decide that a pair of leather boots are a good way to keep your outfits exciting. What you want to avoid when choosing shoes to bring are shoes that you’ll only wear once during your trip, or even for a few hours. Those new heels are cute, but if you can only wear them to dinner before your feet start hurting, they’re not a good choice to include in your three pairs that bring on your trip.

Stick with Travel-size Toiletries

Toiletries are something that you should always have on your packing list when you’re getting ready for a trip. When packing light, you’re better off packing travel-size toiletries instead of full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner. These not only take up a lot of space but you’ll be forced to check your bag as well. If you want the freedom that comes with traveling carry-on, you’ll need travel-size toiletries to get through airport security. Another alternative to smaller bottles of shampoo and conditioner is solid toiletries. This eliminates the need for TSA-restricted liquids at all. And as a bonus, they won’t explode all over your belongings in your bag.

If you’re planning on a longer trip, another tip I recommend is simply purchasing these larger items at a drugstore when you get to your final destination. You can find everything you need at local stores, and you can leave these larger bottles behind as well.

Think about laundry ahead of time

A travel capsule of mix and match outfits means you’ll wear the same item of clothing multiple times. If you happen to be traveling to an especially hot location or you just spill something on your shirt, you’ll want the option to clean it. When planning your trip, consider laundry ahead of time when you’re planning a trip. I don’t often use hotel laundry as it can be very pricey, but Yelp makes it easy to find laundry nearby. On a recent trip to Portugal, we used a service that came to the hotel to pick up the clothing and dropped it off when done!

If you’re staying in an Airbnb while you’re away, you may have access to a washer and dryer in the unit you’re staying in, or at least very close. Many vacation rentals in the United States also have washers and dryers because they’re often people’s second homes. Throw a few laudry detergent pods in your travel-size liquids bag. Or, plan on purchasing some laundry detergent when you get to your final destinations. In a well-equipped vacation rental, they may even offer you laundry detergent, which is a nice perk.

Choose Your Daytime Bag Carefully

A bag that you carry with you during the day while you’re traveling is not the same thing as a carry-on bag that you bring on the plane. You probably don’t want to carry around a heavy backpack all day, and you probably shouldn’t anyway because it can make you stand out as someone who can get pickpocketed easily. A day pack is usually much smaller than a carry-on bag, and it should sit close to your body so you can keep a close eye on your belongings at all times.

Solo traveler? If this is your first solo trip, you might be nervous about pickpockets in a foreign country, but there’s no reason to be as long as you keep your wits about you while you’re walking around. Fanny packs can be good day packs, but I recommend wearing them as a cross-body bag instead of around your waist so they can’t be removed easily by thieves. Smaller purses also work well for this purpose, and if you can, you should wear your bag under your jacket or coat so it’s not easily accessible to others.

Pack Those Essential Travel Items

Ather essential item that you should consider packing, for international trips especially, is a power adapter. Most foreign outlets won’t accommodate your phone or laptop chargers. Being in a strange place is never a good time to have a dead cell phone battery. You can usually find multi-country power adapters online. That way you don’t have to buy a different one for every continent that you travel to. Other good things to have are laundry bags and shoe bags to keep your clothes clean while you’re traveling from place to place.

I suggest downloading any travel apps that you think you’ll use prior to leaving. International cellphone service can be slow. And, it’s good to not have to worry about using up your roaming data on an app download. You can see which apps I recommend using here .

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

We’re well on our way into spring, and I’m a firm believer that this season brings a fresh start and new beginnings — and I embrace that philosophy when it comes to my travel wardrobe as well. I’m all about out with the old (or the things I haven’t found myself wearing in the last year) and in with the new (or all the cute trendy things I know I’ve worked really hard to deserve) especially when there are so many great deals on spring travel clothing right now.

And as a travel writer, you can bet that I’m always on a mission to find fun and functional outfits for my upcoming trips. This season, I’m headed to Italy (twice!), Greece, Key West, and the Caribbean, and I’m ready to be cute and comfortable everywhere I go. How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe With 2024's Biggest Trends

Remy Farrell

As regular readers of Who What Wear UK will know by now, we pride ourselves on our ability to search through the runways and street style to bring you the most relevant trends for the season ahead, but none more so than when it comes to helping you build a hardworking wardrobe with pieces that will stand the test of time. Whilst buzzy new trends come and go, we will always advocate for the kind of clever shopping that allows you to buy less and wear more, and looking to our sources for tips on what to wear in 2024 and beyond, we were not disappointed with the results.

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1704378243737-main

Last year was a great year for building timeless looks, and so chances are you already own some of the year's heavy hitters, like the boxy blazer , the perfect white tee and the crossbody bag. But if you're looking to build on those this year, you've come to the right place. We've put together a list of versatile basics that we spotted on the runways that manage to build a capsule all of their own, and if you add these to what we've already picked up over the past 12 months, you're onto a winner.

Keep scrolling to see the eight pieces that are already being spotted everywhere for 2024, and beyond. Who knew it would be so easy to re-create 2024's biggest trends with less than 8 items?

2024 Capsule Wardrobe Pieces

1. mid-heel shoes.

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700657638101-main

Style Notes: One of the more subtle shoe trends of 2024, the mid-heel shoe continues to strike the perfect balance between dressy and comfortable. Everything from low-heeled ankle boots to party-season kitten heels are on our wish lists right now, and what better shoes to invest in than ones you can wear time and again without the need for blister plasters?

Shop Mid-Heel Shoes:

Animal Print Kitten Heel Sandals

Ticking off two trends in one.

Toteme + The Mid Heel Suede Chelsea Boots

Yes, there's often still a need for classic black ankle boots in spring.

ATP Atelier + Desana Nappa Slingbacks in Hazelnut

Decisions, decisions… these also come in black, black suede and cream.

Reformation + Wade Kitten Heel

Elevate the everyday with this pair.

2. Burgundy

@dawn.tan

Style Notes: You'd have to be living under a rock to not notice that red was a huge colour trend last year, and while it's not going anywhere anytime soon, it has had a grown-up glow up for 2024 in the form of burgundy. Elegant, classic and timeless, this hue is the perfect way to add a touch of colour to an otherwise very minimalist capsule.

Shop Burgundy:

Sheer Ribbed Top

Such a cool layering piece.

Braided Leather Bag - Women

A very cute spring/summer bag that will hold all your essentials.

Azul Wool Blazer

It's an investment, yes, but one worth making due to the quality of the fabric and cut of this blazer.

Bethany Ballet Flat

Because we all know buckles ballet flats are everywhere right now.

3. Loose-Leg Jeans

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700658186971-main

Style Notes: If 2021 saw the return of the skinny and 2022 was all about the straight-leg, this year continues last years baggy jean adoration. Although the runways tried to convince us that we'd all be wearing low-slung jeans, we prefer something a little more wearable, and the looser wide-leg style is right up our street. This roomier, more casual fit is perfect to pair with chunky knits in winter and with a tank top or tee in summer.

Shop Loose-Leg Jeans:

+ Net Sustain Annina High-Rise Wide-Leg Organic Jeans

Just the right amount of slouch.

Arket + Cloud Low Loose Jeans

This pair is  flying.

Stella Pleated Low-Rise Wide-Leg Jeans

The pleating on these really take them up a notch.

COS + Arch Jeans – Tapered

The sculptural silhouette is so modern.

4. Cardigan

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700658106165-main

Style Notes : We may have Katie Holmes to thank for making the cardigan cool again, but years after her "bra-digan" debut, we're still turning to cardigans over crew necks for a warm layer that's easy to wear and also feels polished. Take tips from fellow stylish stars Alexa Chung , Sofia Richie-Grainge and Hailey Bieber by wearing a fine knit with nothing underneath and pairing with jeans and simple flats.

Shop Cardigans:

Sézane + Gaspard Cardigan

I'll take one of these in every colour.

Reformation + Fantino Cashmere Collared Cardigan

This colour is so delicious, and would pair perfectly with so many pieces.

Fine-Knit Cardigan

Cropped cardigans are perfect for pairing with high-waisted trousers and skirts.

M&S Collection + Crew Neck Button Front Cardigan

You can't beat Marks and Spencer quality at a bargain price.

5. Midaxi Skirt

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700658397799-main

Style Notes: Sorry, miniskirts; we've made up our minds and there's much more longevity in the midi and maxi than the micro hem. Which other skirt dresses up and down as easily as a longer, elegant slip or A-line? All you need is a change of shoes for two entirely different outfits in one, and that makes the long skirt well worth its cost per wear.

Shop Midaxi Skirts:

COS + Flared Merino Wool Skirt

The flared hem gives this such an elevated vibe.

Reformation + Layla Silk Skirt

Throw on a blazer and you're good to go.

Tailored Linen-Blend Maxi Skirt

How pretty is this pink style? Wear with the matching waistcoat or a simple black blazer.

Slit Long Skirt - Women

Ideal for the office.

6. Minimalist Tote

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1704193774304-main

Style Notes : If there's one bag that is guaranteed to do it all, it's a roomy tote, and we keep spotting minimalist styles on the arms of Instagram's best dressed. Logomania had its moment and bold, statement bags are great for bringing a look to life, but if you're looking for an investment bag to spend a little more on for a lot more wear, an understated tote will only go up in value (and I can get behind any bag that fits a laptop inside).

Shop Tote Bags:

Heckfield Suede Tote | Tan

Love the elongated shape of this one.

Toteme + Suede Tote

Suede makes everything look so luxurious.

Demellier + The Midi New York

Our editors are convinced that  DeMellier makes some of the best bags around.

7. Wide-Leg Trousers

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700660218333-main

Style Notes : Back for another year (as if they ever left), the tailored, wide-leg trouser continues to be team Who What Wear UK's favourite silhouette to flatter every shape and size. Celebs and influencers are still wearing " puddle pants " (a trouser long enough to gather around the ankle) but if that feels like too much fabric, a kick-flare cut will give the same effect without overwhelming your frame.

Shop Wide-Leg Trousers:

Cotton Super High-Waisted Trouser + Belt

Proof that camel is the ultimate "rich girl" hue.

COS + Wide-Leg Tailored Wool Trousers

Taking notes on this whole look for the office.

Maeve Boxer Detail Pleat-Front Wide-Leg Trousers

The boxer short detail adds a bit of fun to a classic.

Pleated Trousers

Such a fun shade to play around with for spring.

8. Simple Midi Dress

2024-capsule-wardrobe-310746-1700751921242-main

Style Notes: Just like the midaxi skirt, there's only one dress trend worth committing to this season. The versatile knitted midi dress comes into its own with knee-high boots for the office but is equally as chic with flat sandals and a boxy blazer for spring weekends. Pure, polished perfection.

Shop Maxi Dresses:

Mermaid V-Neck Knitted Dress

This Aligne iteration has already been seen all over Instagram with the matching cardigan.

Penny Crew Neck Ribbed Knitted Dress

The flared sleeves are a great additional detail.

Button-Front Ribbed Dress

Butter yellow is everywhere right now.

Kendi Denim Midi Dress

Just add heels for brunch with the girls.
