Proud Mary 2 night discovery cruise

I recently spent a weekend on the Proud Mary on the Murray River. It was very relaxing and the staff were very helpful. The food was amazing and of course the wine was also good. We had a few shore excursions as well as a small boat tour to look a little more closely at the shore and the birds. Lots of neat birds to see. Our cabin was neat and tidy with its own bathroom but one night we did not have shore power so the generator ran all night. It was so much more peaceful the second night! The beds were really comfortable. It is a small boat - only 36 passengers I think so it is not quite the same as river cruising in Europe!

Proud Mary travellers beware! Had it not been for the staff on the Proud Mary we would have abandoned ship! Sadly, we were issued with one of the worst cabins for noise & heat on the boat, We were right next to the engine & while the boat was moving it was impossible to be in our cabin due to the noise- unbelievable !!! This meant no snoozing through the day or sleeping in - impossible. Mind you, we did mention our dilemma & were told there were ear plugs on our bed side tables & that the owners had been informed of the problem but ...... If you’re thinking of booking be advised that the staff are lovely, the food is good, the clientele is mainly over 80 and the land excursions are dreary. We were very disappointed Jennifer

Dear Jennifer, we are sorry to hear you did not find the Proud Mary cruise met your expectations. All cabins have brand new climate control systems and our shore excursions regularly receive positive feedback regarding there uniqueness and the knowledge passed on by our experienced ecologists. Unfortunately the nature of river boat cruising is that engine noise is an inhereant part of the experience. We take on board your feedback and are in the process of investigating further improvement to noise insulation. Our passengers ages vary from 50 years old onwards at any time through the year. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the food as our chef's take immense pride in the culinary experience provided aboard Proud Mary.

Very relaxing but informative 5 day cruise. Cabins tight but comfortable and crew were helpful. Gained a new perspective of the river and it’s history.

Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing 2 day cruise from Murray Bridge up the Murray River on the Proud Mary. Excellent cuisine ,friendly and knowledgeable staff took care of all our needs and travell experiences . It was good to enjoy leisurely cruising with the opportunity to visit towns and go on scenic walks and ecological tours . Saturday night time entertainment was very suitable for all age groups . Would recommend this trip as a great way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Murray River

Our cruise gave us a wonderful look at the Murray River at each bend - steep cliffs, bird life, small towns and holiday homes. We also heard about the history from videos, the crew and in particular Michael, on the coach. The on shore activities were varied and interesting. Our meals were a highlight each day as we gathered in the dining area still enjoying the view and the company of other folk. Our cabin was serviced daily and the crew were always friendly and ready to assist at any time. This is a relaxing holiday enjoying a unique part of our country’s waterways.

Great service comfortable beds an experience for those looking at a relaxing time and quaint shops at Mannum and hörndorf . Captain and staff fantastic r commend for the older group

Day 1 - Norris bend

After arriving by coach from Echuca you depart Torrumbarry upstream, enjoy an afternoon Devonshire tea, take in the sights and sounds of the river and get to know your fellow cruisers. There’s ample time to chat with the skipper in the wheelhouse to learn about PS Emmylou, her river history or simply relax in your private cabin.

When the sun begins to set, this marks the start of ‘Happy Hour’. Enjoy a drink in the saloon before a chefprepared welcome dinner. Listen to the river birds’ evening chorus and watch for kangaroos, wombats, and many species of birds as the stars begin to appear. Tonight, we moor at Norris Bend where your crew will have a riverside campfire (weather dependant) ready for you to enjoy after diner.

Day 2 - Onshore Tour & perricoota Station

After a hearty breakfast, Emmylou cruises to the famous Perricoota Station, the property first settled by James Maiden in 1843, and famous for starring in the TV mini series “All the River Run” where PS Emmylou was renamed PS Providence. Here you will depart to Restdown Winery, producers of fine organic wines and Hereford beef. Join the property’s owners for a guided tour along a 1.4km wetlands walking trail, highlighting items of great Aboriginal significance before a gourmet lunch of local produce and wine tastings.

Arriving back at Perricoota Station the skipper will invite you to walk along the historical buildings and immaculate gardens of Perricoota Station before happy hour. Tonight enjoy a fabulous dinner on the deck on Emmylou overlooking the famous Perricoota Station mansion. Tonight, after dinner it’s Movie Night with a special presentation of “Riverboats Remembered”, a fabulous historical presentation featuring archival footage of the paddle steamers and communities of the Murray River from the early 1900s through to the mid1970s.

Day 3 - All Day Cruising & Layfield Lane

For early risers and keen photographers, the morning mist and wildlife around Perricoota is a sight to behold. After breakfast, Emmylou gracefully steams  onwards upstream for a full day of cruising towards our riverside mooring, Layfield Lane mooring.

Today enjoy lunch on the deck or in the saloon with plenty of time to relax with a good book or just take in the river views. Tonight, enjoy a grand dinner on the riverbank – our signature Australian BBQ (weather dependent), lit up by candles on the tables and stars in the sky. After dinner enjoy casual conversation around the campfire (weather dependent) with live  entertainment before retiring for the evening.

Day 4 - River Cruising & Echuca

Start your day with a satisfying breakfast to fuel up for an exciting half-day adventure on both land and water. Your guided Henry Hopwood Town Tour tour will take you through the charming town of Echuca, uncovering hidden historical gems like Hopwood’s Punt and the pontoon bridge. This bridge, the brainchild of Echuca’s founder Henry Hopwood, marks the initial river crossing in the area.

Next, prepare to be enchanted by our 110 year old PS Canberra featuring a red gum timber hull built in 1912 at Goolwa South Australia. Enjoy morning tea aboard. Before returning to Emmylou for lunch when your river cruise adventure continues upstream cruising past the imposing Port of Echuca Wharf once home to over 100 paddlesteamers in its heyday. This evening you will enjoy a farewell dinner cruising upriver of Echuca .

Day 5 - Silo Tour & Layfield Lane

Prepare yourself for an engaging half-day expedition that will immerse you in the beauty of local artistry and historical vignettes. The day kicks off with a visit to the breathtaking local art silos situated at Rochester and Colbinabbin. These large-than-life paintings are a testament to the region’s rich heritage and are sure to leave an indelible impression. Your excursion doesn’t just end with the visual feast of the silos; it extends to a delightful lunch at a renowned local pub. Here, you’ll not only savor delicious fare but also have the unique opportunity to interact with the pub’s welcoming owners and engage in lively conversations with the friendly locals.

As you reboard the Emmylou, get ready to unwind during the afternoon cruise downstream with a relaxing Devonshire tea. The serene ambiance of the river complements the delectable treats served, providing a perfect backdrop for a leisurely afternoon. As the sun starts savor a refreshing drink in the ship’s saloon while basking in the scenic beauty surrounding you.

As twilight sets in, a magical experience awaits you at Layfield Lane. Following a sumptuous Australian BBQ dinner served on the riverbank the atmosphere transforms with live entertainment around a crackling campfire under the sparkling stars

Day 6 - Onshore Tour and River Cruising

Experience the perfect start to your day with a delightful breakfast before embarking on a captivating half-day land and river tour that promises to be an  unforgettable journey. Your adventure begins with a visit to the fascinating Heritage Farm Museum, where you’ll immerse yourself in the charm of the past.

Next, get ready to be enchanted as you join the Murray Explorer, a magnificent vessel that will take you on an Expedition cruise along the upper Murray River. Prepare to be awestruck by the natural wonders that surround you, from breathtaking landscapes to a rich array of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for White Faced Herons and you may even find a King Fisher, all this along with a captain’s commentary.

Later, you will visit St Anne’s Winery for a tasting of their fabulous table and fortified wines before returning to Emmylou for lunch as you continue downriver towards Deep Creek Marina. In the evening, you can unwind with a fascinating documentary featuring archival footage of the paddlesteamers and communities of the Murray River.

Day 7 - Perricoota Station & Torrumbarry Weir

Today, Emmylou embarks on an exhilarating full-day cruise bound for Torrumbarry Weir, promising an enriching journey filled with exploration and scenic delights.

Amidst this captivating cruise, a mid-morning interlude beckons at the renowned Perricoota Station. Join the skipper for an immersive walking tour enveloped by the rich historical tapestry of Perricoota Station’s heritage.

Continuing the voyage towards Torrumbarry Weir, anticipation mounts for the forthcoming  discoveries. Upon reaching the weir’s shores, partake in a guided walk, traversing the structure and delving into its history and significance. Explore the Interpretive Centre, a treasure trove of knowledge illuminating the intricate details of the Murray Darling Basin and the ingenious weir and lock system, which traces its origins back to 1923.

As the day gracefully transitions into evening, prepare for a splendid conclusion to this memorable journey. Indulge in a delectable final dinner hosted by your Skipper and Engineer, commencing with tantalising pre-dinner canapés and refreshing drinks against the backdrop of the setting sun casting its golden hues over the tranquil weir. As the stars emerge in the night sky, casting their celestial glow, savor every moment of this serene and magical evening aboard the Emmylou.

Day 8 - Echuca

Early risers can enjoy a riverside stroll before breakfast. A courtesy vehicle will then be ready to return you to Echuca, where you will reluctantly say farewell to your unforgettable river journey on the PS Emmylou

Do you need bug spray in Europe

We are taking the 21 day tour in August. I'm starting to pack and wonder if we need bug spray? Will we really ever need a jacket? What's the chance of enough rain to pack an umbrella? Can we leave stuff on the bus for the duration of the trip? Do you really think you can make it on $50-$100/person a day? How much are the disposable phones at the European airports? (We fly into Amsterdam) Are there going to be any opportunities to use a Laundromat? .(We are doing the 21 day) The laundromat is really important to me and I would give up a couple of hours to have our clothes cleaned and dried as apposed to hanging them over a line. (I did pack the line)

You may not need insect repellent, but if you do, you'll be glad to have it with you. I'm not sure you could bring a spray on the plane; I'll leave that question to someone else. I bring a few of the individually packaged towelettes that are saturated with repellent. Tales almost no space, and I've been very glad to have it in Italy.

I'm taking the 21 Day the end of August as well! Can't wait!

I've been to Italy in May but not in August/Sept, but here are my thoughts:

Jacket: Looked at weather.com today and I realize this is NOT the best site for weather in Muerren, Switzerland but the projected high next Tues is 54 with rain. Don't know where you are from, but in N. Idaho I would want a jacket with those conditions. I will take 2 cardigans and a waterproof jacket. Still up in the air about taking a polarfleece vest. I am guessing that is overkill.

Umbrella: I'm taking an umbrella and waterproof jacket, but that is what I will take anywhere I go.

Leaving stuff: As I understand it we have the same coach the whole time and some people bring an extra bag for deep storage to leave under the bus. On the RS Tour of Ireland our bus driver did not want people to leave electronics on the bus overnight. editing to add: I have taken a couple of bus tours (Rick Steves and Road Scholar) and I now take a tote bag (LeSportSac medium tote is the size) to leave on the bus during the day. I put my jacket, umbrella, water, snacks, kindle, guide book, journal, etc in there so my purse is lighter. I don't need to take everything off the bus when we make intermediate stops, but have things handy.

Budget: I think I can make it on $50-$100/day (probably to the lower end most days). I will probably have an occasional glass of wine and I don't usually eat expensively. I am vegan so anticipate having some back up food in case group meals don't work for me. I do plan to spend money to go up the Schilthorn if the weather is good. I think that is pretty expensive.

Wash: Recently on a thread someone said there were wash opportunities in Reutte and Monterosso. I did Heart of Italy and at the hotel in Monterosso they had laundry bags when they gave us the room keys if you wanted them to do your laundry.

Line: I have had better success sink washing and then just hanging on a cheap plastic hanger that I take with me. I also take a couple of clothes pins. I trialed the stretchy line at home and wasnt very successful with it. I always wound up with lumpy areas in the garment after it dried from where I poked it thru the braided areas.

I'm excited!

i just got back from 6 days in Italy and 2 in Slovenia.......I had packed one of those curly plastic bracelets saturated with bug repellent.......I think it did make the mosquitoes ignore my face and arms.....tho they did bite my legs. we were a self guided group, but at the end my friend did a daily average......with train tickets, museums, lunch, supper, wine and gelato AND hotel (double occupancy) ......we averaged 100 euros a day. pretty amazing. so, assuming that your museum tickets and housing are already a part of your tour price.....I think you can get 2 amazing meals and daily gelato and wine somewhere between 50 & 100 dollars I had a knit cardigan, a large chambray shirt, and a rain poncho that I could wear over my day pack. I used them all.

Thanks for the quick replies. My trip starts August 1st (21 grand tour). I will bring a bag for stuff I plan to leave on the bus. i will bring a sweater and cheap rain pouch. I'm excited to hear that their will be laundry service at days 6 and 14. I would like to splurge on that. Do people on the tour wear cocktail attire in the evening. Or does everybody just throw a shawl/scarf on with their daytime casual wear? I really intend to pack light as I am carrying it all in a Rick Steve's backpack/rolling luggage.

I have been on 10 RS Tours and, so far, not one person has ever worn a cocktail dress. These are very casual tours. I have seen people wear slacks or a dress/skirt with scarf, for evening meals. I was in Italy in Oct. and was never bothered by any insects, and Mosquitos love me. I would definitely take along a waterproof jacket, you could buy an umbrella there, if it rains often enough to warrant the purchase. I, too, leave stuff on the bus during the day. The driver will lock the bus whenever he is taking his break. Just like at home, I would never leave anything on the bus overnight. There has never been an incident of theft during any tour I have taken. I can make it on the amount quoted, but I always transfer way more money into checking account, in case I need more. I am unsure of cheap phone prices, but have you checked to see if your carrier has an international plan?

Glad to hear that no one is dressing up. I am going to search online for the lightest travel iron possible because we didn't go out and buy microfiber clothes that dry quick and I will haul it if I can find one for a pound.

I meant that weighs a pound.

I would bring one small supply of bug repellant per couple; some may come in the format of moist towelettes. If you're trying to carry all your bags on board, then liquids must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less .

While I bring both a waterproof raincoat and umbrella later in the year, I might leave both of those home in August in favor of more adjustable layers. If there is a sudden squall in a touristy spot, umbrella sellers will appear. Now I see that the Muerren weather forecast above isn't too warm, thanks to Pam's worst-case example. The surrounding July days are forecast at closer to 65 degrees in Muerren, still with thunderstorms. It will always be colder on top of Mt. Schilthorn and weather cams at the lift offices give you the best preview before you go up.

Your guide will give you advance notice of a few towns where you have good laundry opportunities. I don't think you need a travel iron; a few hotels might have a loaner iron. When I have sent clothes to be washed and folded by a service, they have always come back quite nice (but not pressed). In your Best of Europe guidebook, laundry facilities are often listed at the start of each chapter, under "Helpful Hints," or in bigger cities (like Paris) are mentioned in the hotel section. Your hotel staff or Google maps can help you find others.

You can leave a bag or some purchases in "deep storage" under the bus. These are generally items that you won't need until the end of the trip, which the driver stores in a separate area. You will also want a day bag for your daily necessities, but may well leave items in the passenger section of the bus when the group is making a short stop.

In big cities and sweaty Italian weather, I tend to change for dinner, but what I change into is not much fancier than the other clothes in rotation.

One of the worst (or best) bug stories we've had here was: The travelers were in (I think it was) Venice in the summer. Their hotel room did not have AC, so when they went out for dinner, they left the window open for ventilation. Hotels in many European countries don't seem to have window screens, this one didn't. When they returned to the room after dinner, and turned the light on, they said the room was "black" with insects (I forget which species of bug).

I forget what they did, but the corrective action needed at that point was way beyond bug spray.

No cocktail dresses! In fact, on the 2 tours I have done, most people wore the same thing for dinner as they had worn during the day. On my last tour a woman turned up with a different shirt for the last night and said she had been saving it for the last night, but she was the only one who wore something different. In my experience everyone is very casual.

I was hoping the Muerren temps were unseasonable! 65 looks better...

Ditto what Pam said. We have been on 8 RS tours and rarely changed for dinner from what I wore during the day unless I was hot and sweaty. Casual tops are all I take.

I leave in one week and I'm pretty sure my packing is adequate. My biggest problem now is understanding the phone technology. I want to take pictures with the phone, but I don't want roaming charges and I don't want to receive phone calls from other than my traveling partner. So putting on the airplane mode cuts out reaching my traveling partner, because he wont have it on either.

Sample Itinerary

Mid-afternoon the PS Murray Princess departs historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, and heads upriver while you enjoy a Welcome Dinner.

As we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Caurnamont, you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets, and many other species. Our onboard entertainer provides music for the night owls.

Daybreak and it’s time for the keen photographers to be out to capture the special light and the morning movement of wildlife. Prolific birdlife includes pelicans, wrens, and swans.

Enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch cruising upriver to Blanchetown through one of 13 locks that maintain the flow and levels of water.

This afternoon we moor opposite the township of Blanchetown for our overnight anchorage. As the last rays of the sun fade, we visit Burk Salter Boutique Winery and enjoy wine tasting at the cellar door which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars.

After breakfast cruise downriver to picturesque Swan Reach. The town was first settled in the 1850s and was originally the largest of five sheep and cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach Hotel where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray River (own expense). Join a walking tour and visit the Swan Reach Museum (gold coin donation at entry). Cruise downriver after lunch and take in the tranquillity as the landscape slides by. Catch up with friends over a coffee or drink whilst enjoying the magnificent scenery.

When we arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show as we recreate typical Australian woolshed history. Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River.

An optional Nocturnal Tour (additional cost) in a comfortable purpose-built cart is available after dinner where you may see kangaroos, wombats, foxes, bats, and owls by powerful spotlights. Special stops along the way are included to view the spectacular night sky which is part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

After an optional Bush Tucker Breakfast (additional cost) or a bush walk with the Captain, we slowly cruise downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about aboriginal history in the area.

We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Along the way, adventure seekers can also take a scenic tender boat ride.

Tonight, join your fellow passengers for a delicious dinner in the Sturt Dining Room followed by an evening of entertainment.

We leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast, we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf. You will then transfer back to a hotel in Adelaide arriving around 12.30 pm. The afternoon is yours free to wander the city of Adelaide before settling into your included accommodation for the night.

An early morning pick-up from your hotel for a scenic coach transfer to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views, and rolling hills. On arrival, board the SeaLink ferry for the 45-minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here you will board your luxury SeaLink coach, and your local driver/guide will take you on a tour of South Australia’s premier nature-based tourism destination.

Visit Seal Bay Conservation Park where you will be taken on a guided beach walk with an experienced guide and be amongst a colony of rare Australian sea lions. Get up close and see these wild creatures frolic and laze about – a truly amazing and unforgettable experience. After your visit to Seal Bay Conservation Park, you will enjoy a delicious two-course lunch.

Spend the afternoon in the Flinders Chase National Park, which was devastated by the worst fire to ever hit the island in January 2020. You’ll see that the regeneration of the native bush occurs so quickly after the event and there will be many opportunities to take photos. As you travel through the park, keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles, and koalas. See the rugged coastline from walks around Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Remarkable Rocks provide great photographic opportunities, and the Admirals Arch boardwalk takes you down a rugged cliff face to reveal the spectacular rock archway, a natural nursery and safe haven for playful Long-nosed Fur Seals.

Your last visit of the day is to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park to feed some kangaroos and get up close to the Kangaroo Island Koalas while listening to the Keeper talk about the cuddly mammals. There is also a possibility that you will see more kangaroos and wallabies on your way to your chosen overnight accommodation.

Start your day with a delicious, cooked breakfast before heading off on day 2 of your tour. Today your local guide will introduce you to some of the island’s leading creators where you will see a “Free Flight” display of raptors and taste some local Kangaroo Island produce. Your first official stop will be the fascinating Birds of Prey Presentation at Raptor Domain for an educational, interactive, and inspiring experience. The only “Free Flight” Birds of Prey display in South Australia, it is thought by many to be the most interactive Birds of Prey presentation in Australia.

Next, travel to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery for a delicious lunch followed by an introductory talk about the history of the oil distillery and take a guided tour. You may choose to taste Kangaroo Island Ciders’ range of Colony Cove products including Apple Sparkler and Cider (additional cost). Finish off with some free time in their souvenir shop where you will find an assortment of Eucalyptus products. Your next stop is Clifford’s Honey Farm, where you’ll enjoy an informative guided tour of the honey room where you will learn about the extraction process, taste a honey soft drink, and have the option to sample the Drunken Drone Brewery’s Honey Wheat Ale. In the farm gate shop, you can see a working beehive where you can try to spot the Queen bee. Even better than expected. My best friend and I chose the 3 night river cruise as a way to spend time together while living in separate states. We expected it to be a quiet relaxing few days with lots of “oldies”. In fact we very active 70 year olds were by no means the youngest on board and , with all the activities on offer, we were kept very busy and met such a lot of interesting, fun people over the few days. The crew were friendly and professional, food was good if not adventurous, the scenery absolutely stunning and so varied, all viewed from our gorgeous home vessel the Murray Princess. Yes, the cabins are very basic and tiny but served the purpose. You do need to be tidy! We ladies had such a good time we are planning to take our husbands back for the 4 night trip. It is such an Aussie adventure. Ruth

We did the 4 day Murray Princess cruise . The cruise is very relaxing with delicious food and very friendly staff. A great experience. The river is so beautiful. I hadn’t expected such gorgeous scenery. The boat was great, just big enough with several lounges. There wasn’t any over crowding in any part of the boat. The excursions were good too. The cabins although small were well set out and we didn’t have any problems with space. Beds were comfy. Only thing I can recommend is that the coffee shop be opened at 7am for us coffee lovers who love a good cappuccino first thing in the mornings. There was a coffee/tea station available 24 hours a day with biscuits and a big fruit basket which was appreciated. All in all a fabulous experience and I recommend everyone take a trip down the Murray River. Colleen

Starting from Mannum for a Murray River Cruise on the Murray Princess. We had a great 4 night cruise on the Murray Princess last week. We especially liked the time we spent at the Sunnydale property checking out the sheep shearing display and going for a spotlighting tour around the property that night. The Murray Princess crew also put on a great BBQ and show as well. The crew were great in all areas of making sure of our comfort, entertain and food requirements. Judith C
