RUGGED TREK

A two-ply tyre built for on and off-road adventures.

Cooper Tires® Rugged Trek | Rugged terrain tyre

When choosing a 4WD tyre you would normally pick between an all-terrain or a mud tyre. An all-terrain would be good on-road, gravel and some off-road, but would lack traction in the mud. A mud tyre would be great off-road, noisy on-road, and give you lower mileage. Cooper has solved the age-old problem by introducing the RUGGED TREK as a hybrid tyre. The Cooper RUGGED TREK has all the characteristics you look for in an aggressive mud tyre, while still giving you the mileage and performance from an all-terrain. It features a 4-rib design, open shoulder blocks and sidebiters for off-road traction. The latest tread design provides a larger footprint, and unique internal siping improves wet-road performance. The Cooper RUGGED TREK comes with a massive 14.7mm of tread and a mileage guarantee of up to 80,000kms*.

RUGGED TREK tested and proven

Jeff Newick and Sarah Davies test out the New RUGGED TREK, Cooper’s best tyre ever made to date driving through the Eyre Peninsula.

They found the RUGGED TREKs to be capable of tackling all the different terrains with ease from bitumen, gravel, rough rocks to boggy wet sand.

Sarah quotes “It wasn’t just my excellent driving skills, I felt comfortable on the RUGGED TREKs and never doubted them for a second, I found them to be quiet on-road and they made off-road driving a breeze”.

Only have had them on for about 1500 miles. I put them on my 2008 f250 gas. So far I really like them. If they keep doing well, I will be putting them on my 2012 f350 diesel. Alot quieter than I thought they would be, ride it good for a 10 ply.

  • Miles driven on tires 5k - 9k

As with any all-terrain tire there was a little bit of loss in the softness of the ride, and a slight humming noise. But beyond that I was very impressed with how quiet these tires actually are for how aggressive they actually look. I chalk some of that up to this being on a 22 inch rim and a lower profile all-terrain tire. For the price and the look and the comfort of this tire I would recommend it to anybody who does more street travel then off-road. I never knew Cooper made such a great tire!

Replaced my Bridgestone Dueler "A/T" with these tires on my 2018 GMC Sierra Denali. Love the way they look over the stock tires. Biggest thing that surprised me was how quiet they were for how aggressive the tread pattern is. Barely any noticeable difference at all. I put about 2,000 miles, mostly interstate on these tires in the first 6 weeks. No significant road noise all the way up to 90mph. They handle great on dry roads, no issues on wet roads either but I haven't driven through any really heavy rain. Only downside I have at all is fuel economy. I was getting an average of just under 20mpg with my old tires and after 2500 miles i've averaged 18mpg with these. Overall, would definitely recommend.

Cooper discoverer rugged trek – first look and initial impressions.

Cooper Rugged Trek on 5th Gen 4runner - Off-Road

Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek (285/70/17) – On-Road & Off-Road Initial Impressions on the 5th Gen 4runner

A relatively newer tire from Cooper (released in early 2021), the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek walks the line between an All-Terrain and a Mud Terrain, being loosely classified as a “hybrid” tire.

I knew this when I ordered them, but was admittedly shocked by the amount of tread/overall beefiness of the tires when they arrived. Featuring two sidewall options, they provide a small style choice to accompany their rugged look. The tires mounted extremely easily and took to road force balancing pretty well.

Two out of four tires balanced almost perfectly, leaving the other two needing a bit more attention, but I attribute a lot of this to my stock Toyota wheels which have a history of being difficult to balance.

My Tire History

These tires are mounted on a 2016 Trail Premium, with a Dobinson’s 2″ suspension, Spidertrax Spacers, and the factory Trail wheels. This setup required a body mount chop and a decent amount of trimming to the fenders/wheel wells . On this 4runner I have had the following tires for comparison:

  • Dunlop AT20 – 265/70/17
  • BFG KO2 (C load) – 265/70/17
  • Falken Wildpeak (SL load) – 265/70/17

Why I Chose the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Treks

Cooper Rugged Trek, Falken Wildpeak, Tires, Tread Pattern

After installing a 2″ Dobinson’s suspension, I had a great excuse to bump up to a larger tire. Personally, 285s fit the bill for me of maintaining visual proportions, adding a bit of height/width, but keeping things practical for a daily driver. The two obvious (and popular) choices were BFG KO2s and Falken Wildpeaks. Personally, I did not like the wet traction of the KO2s when I had them, so they were out, leaving the Falken Wildpeaks as the other choice.

The Falken’s have been great, everything about them, and I have zero complaints, but I also wanted to try something new, which led to a long excel spreadsheet and countless back and forth moments of tire comparison.

Ultimately I landed on the Rugged Treks due to the sweet spot they fell in as it relates to weight, cost, performance rating, and of course looks. Not to mention, I have had Cooper’s (ATP/AT3 lineup) in the past on a 3rd generation 4runner and knew their quality and longevity.

On-Road Performance: Dry Conditions (8/10)

Cooper Rugged Trek, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

I have only had these tires installed for about 800 miles, so this is a very early overview, but so far I am impressed with these tires.

Ride Comfort

Because I made a lot of changes at once (most notably, suspension), it is hard to assess a 1:1 comfort rating. I went from a stock size SL (31.56″) to a larger E load (33.03″), so things obviously felt different on the road, but all in all, I am very impressed with the overall comfort from such a large, aggressive tire. At commuting speeds (below 45mph), they feel amazing. Smooth, grippy, and controlled are all words I would use to describe them.

Reaching interstate speeds (70mph-80mph), this still rings true, but you “feel” the road more. The lugs follow the grooves in the pavement a bit and the inconsistencies in the road are carried through the stiffer rubber into the steering wheel. For anyone with larger, heavier ply tires, this is all probably common, but it was an initial shock from a stock SL size.

If you believe in the accurate scientific properties of a decibel meter app for your phone, then I can tell you that these tires are actually several decibels quieter than my stock size Falken’s with ~50% tread. That’s hard science there, a 285/70 with 18/32″ tread is quieter a 265/70 with 7/32″ tread, at interstate speeds. I was pleasantly surprised. Audibly I heard nothing more than the typical AT hum.

On-Road Performance: Wet Conditions (7/10)

Cooper Rugged Trek, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

When I had KO2’s I noticed slipping in wet conditions almost immediately after installing them, on a hill, on a flat turn, etc. I could easily get the tires to break loose. I was excited to try these in the same conditions. I can’t get them to break loose.

Cooper has done a great job with their siping to expel the water from between the treads. These tires seem very planted on wet pavement, from slow speeds all the way up to interstate speeds. Obviously, they’re an AT, not a dedicated road tire, so they incur a little hydroplaning, but nothing that seems unsafe.

Off-Road Performance: Dirt / Gravel / Rock and Aired Down (9/10)

Cooper Rugged Trek, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

Aired down to about 20psi, these tires stuck to the gravel forest service roads like it was pavement. I also had the opportunity to pull a small trailer as well and they performed flawlessly, there was no wondering or harshness to the ride, the tires felt planted and in control. Leaving the gravel and engaging 4×4, these tires continued to shine.

The tire conformed nicely to the rocks and the aggressive sidewalls kept them from just sliding off of anything they touched. They handled small to medium size rocks and roots, uneven terrain, and loose dirt with ease. My testing was limited, but for the short amount of time I’ve been running them, these tires have been impressive.

Off-Road Performance: Mud (6/10)

Cooper Rugged Trek, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

This isn’t a dedicated Mud Terrain tire, but I was able to test them a little in the two types of North Carolina mud we have; slimy, stinky brown mud, and slick peanut butter clay. In the former they preformed well. They were able to gain and maintain traction, and the lugs cleared extremely well. In the latter, it was like driving on an ice rink.

Although I didn’t have a great testing ground, and didn’t have a Mud Terrain to compare to, I do feel that the increase in tread depth and space between lugs help these tires to perform better in mud than a traditional AT tire. If I were to be driving in a lot of mud often, I would look to a MT, but for the performance, and the benefits gained in other ways, this fits my needs perfectly.

Before and After

Falken Wildpeak, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

Before – 265/70/17 Falken Wildpeak on stock suspension

Cooper Rugged Trek, 5th Gen 4runner, Sidewall, Tread Pattern, Tires

After – 285/70/17 Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek on Dobinsons Suspension

Previously I thought the Falken Wildpeaks had an aggressive tread and looked pretty beefy, but after looking at the Rugged Trek’s, there is no comparison. Obviously, the increase to 285’s helps, but these tires look good!

Final Thoughts

Albeit an initial impressions review, so far I have nothing but good things to say about these tires. If you acknowledge the repercussions that come with an E-rated tire weighing 58 pounds, then all the rest is positive from me. Out of the multitude of tires that were on my list, I am happy that I settled on these and finally committed. I hope to see more of these on 4runners in the future; if for no other reason than to break of the sea of Wildpeaks and KO2s.

Would I recommend them?

Absolutely. I would recommend these tires to anyone looking to run an aggressive AT without wanting to commit to an MT. They nicely fit the bill between the two and behave well on road for a daily driver as well. Time will tell on longevity, but if they are anything like the Coopers I have had in the past, this will be a tire I keep coming back to.

Mitch, I appreciate the review. I have been a die hard Toyo AT III guy. Just moved from a diesel Porsche Cayenne to a Ford Expedition… I know seems odd, but needed more room as a work vehicle. I have been going back and forth between the Toyos and the Coopers and then a friend swore by the Falkens. So mental gymnastics on my part. I think, I am ready for change in the only part of the vehicle that touches the ground. You gave me the nudge that I needed to go with the Coopers. Once I get them, I will report back.

Brian

Now that some time has past, has your view of this tire changed? I love the look of the tire and the fact it has a mileage warranty. I want to put them on my Silverado z71. Thanks for your info.

Mitch Caldwell

I’m now at 30k miles and my review has not changed at all. I still love them and they’ve performed well in all situations and the wear/noise has been great.

Jonathan Guenther

i wonder how the 6 ply version would ride? Thinking about these for my wife’s 4runner. We are about to put a 3” RC lift on it, going to Colorado next summer and I wonder if the 6 ply will hold up to 1 week worth of dirt trail driving around the alpine loop

Jon

Nice review, these look great! How does the wet performance compare to the Falken Wildpeak AT3W?

I would say it’s the same. I haven’t noticed any slipping, and I’ve tried. There is obviously more spacing between the lugs, so you feel it a little more in standing water, but nothing that feels unsafe.

Byrd

Hello Mitch,

Great blog! I’m looking to get these in stock size, but they have two options I’m torn between. They have a 265/70r17XL (31.89 dia) and the LT265/70r17/10 (32.01). Do you see an issue running the XL instead of the LT? Would I need to still get a BMC with either option? I’ve provide a link below:

https://www.tirebuyer.com/tires/cooper/discoverer-rugged-trek/p/TV090088330

John

I’m in the same situation trying to decide between the xl and lt, I have a stock limited switching to 17 inch rims, 265/70/17.

Also forgot to mention, I’m still on stock suspension.

David

Hi Mitch – great article!

I’m doing a mild offroad / overlanding build of my 5th Gen. Currently have about 400lbs added for a Gobi rack, sliders, skid plate and some other stuff, and planning on completing this stage of the build with Dobinson IMS suspension for 2.0-2.5″ lift, RRW 17×8.5 RR5-V wheels, and (hopefully) 285/70/17 (33”) tires – likely KO2s or Coopers.

Your setup seems similar, and you wrote that you needed extensive trimming and a BMC. Various other articles suggest no need for trimming/BMC with AT 33”.

Any more info on your experience would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks!

I know I responded to you via email, but I wanted to give a brief response here for others benefit:

Trimming / fitment / rubbing has a lot to do with wheel offset, exact tire, alignment, and general use (off-roading vs road driving). Generally speaking you will at least need to trim your front bumper / inside wheel well to fit 33s, but a BMC is dependent on the above factors mentioned, primarily wheel offset. The further your wheels / tires sit outside the wheel well (negative offset), the greater your turn arc and higher potential to rub places.

With the above in mind, I took the safe route and had a BMC, but after having it done, and running 1.25″ spacers, I 100% would have rubbed without a BMC and front fender trimming.

The Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tire offers excellent treadwear and comes with a long-lasting treadwear warranty, which is a noteworthy advantage for drivers. Here’s what you can expect:

Excellent Treadlife: Cooper has designed this tire to provide impressive tread life. It’s built to withstand the challenges of off-road driving, which often puts extra stress on tires . This means you can enjoy more miles of adventure before needing to replace them.

Long Treadwear Warranty: What sets the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tire apart is the inclusion of a long treadwear warranty. This warranty typically covers a certain number of miles (e.g., 60,000 miles or more, depending on the specific tire model). It ensures you’re covered if the tread wears out prematurely within the warranty period.

This combination of excellent tread life and a long treadwear warranty is a significant benefit for off-road enthusiasts, as it provides both durability and peace of mind. You can trust that your Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tires will go the distance , even during rugged adventures.

The Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tire comes with a set of maintenance indicators that help you keep your tires in optimal condition. These indicators are essential for ensuring the safety and performance of your tires . Here are some key maintenance indicators to watch for:

1. Tread Depth: Regularly measure the tread depth of your Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tires. When the tread depth approaches 2/32 of an inch, it’s time to replace the tire . Tread depth is crucial for maintaining traction and handling, especially in wet or slippery conditions.

2. Tire Pressure: Proper tire inflation is essential for safety and performance . Keep an eye on your tire pressure and refer to your vehicle’s recommended pressure levels, which are often found in the owner’s manual or on a label inside the driver’s side door. Underinflated or overinflated tires can impact handling and fuel efficiency.

3. Irregular Wear: Inspect your tires for any signs of irregular wear, such as cupping, feathering, or excessive wear on one side. Irregular wear can be an indication of alignment or suspension issues that need to be addressed to ensure even wear.

4. Sidewall Damage: Check the sidewalls for any damage, such as cuts, punctures, or bulges. Damaged sidewalls can compromise the structural integrity of the tire and may require immediate attention.

5. Visual Inspection: Regularly visually inspect your tires for any foreign objects lodged in the tread, like nails or stones, and remove them. These objects can lead to punctures and loss of tire pressure .

6. Rotation: Follow the recommended tire rotation schedule in your owner’s manual to ensure even wear across all tires. Regular rotation helps extend the lifespan of your Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tires.

By keeping an eye on these maintenance indicators and addressing any issues promptly, you can maximize the lifespan, safety, and performance of your tires, ensuring a reliable and comfortable driving experience .

No, the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tire is not a run-flat tire. Run-flat tires are specially designed to allow you to continue driving for a limited distance at a reduced speed even after a puncture or loss of tire pressure. The Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek is not equipped with this run-flat technology. It’s essential to have a spare tire and the necessary equipment for changing a flat tire when using this tire to ensure your safety in the event of a flat or puncture.

The road noise and comfort performance of the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tire is generally good, with a few considerations to keep in mind:

Road Noise:

While this tire is designed to provide a comfortable and controlled ride on various terrains, it’s worth noting that it may produce more road noise compared to standard passenger car tires . Off-road and all-terrain tires often have more aggressive tread patterns to enhance traction, and this can contribute to a higher level of road noise, especially on highways.

Comfort Performance:

In terms of comfort, the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek strikes a balance between comfort and control . It offers a smooth and stable ride on both on-road and off-road surfaces. The tire’s firmness is designed to provide controlled handling, especially on highways, which can contribute to a comfortable driving experience .

Keep in mind that what some drivers might consider as “road noise” can also be perceived as the hum of adventure for off-road enthusiasts. It’s a trade-off where the tire’s off-road capabilities might result in a bit more noise on highways. The key is to strike a balance that aligns with your driving preferences and the types of terrains you typically encounter.

The price of Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tires can vary widely depending on several factors, including the tire size , your location, and the retailer you choose. On average, you can expect to pay somewhere in the range of $215.99 to $466.99 per tire for this model. However, it’s essential to note that prices may fluctuate due to factors like seasonal discounts, promotions, and any additional services (such as installation) offered by the retailer.

For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing information, it’s recommended to check with local tire dealers or reputable online retailers, where you can get specific pricing details based on your preferred tire size and take advantage of any available deals or promotions. Investing in quality tires like the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek is a worthwhile choice for those seeking reliable off-road performance.

Product Description

The Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek All-Season 275/55R20 117T Tire is an all-season pickup truck and SUV tire that looks tough because it is tough. It looks aggressive but it also has nice manners. The Rugged Trek has a unique Rough Terrain pattern, which is trail capable and provides extra grip and confidence when you venture off the highway. It also features Stone Blockades, which are ridges in the tire pattern to help keep pesky stones and rocks out of the tire and on the ground where they belong, helping protect the tire from damage when you’re off the beaten path. Rugged Trek is built to provide enhanced grip on wet roads and features Whisper Grooves Technology that blocks the rush of air through the tire, helping to eliminate noise when on the highway. There are dual sidewall designs so you can pick between the Mountain Pass pattern or Knife-Edge pattern, which gives you double the options for your look. Our aggressive tread blocks are designed for quiet on-road performance and deep treads help grip in sticky mud and sand. While this is a tough-looking tire, it is also engineered for a quiet and comfortable drive.

About cooper .

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company is a global group of businesses that design, manufacture, market, and sell passenger cars, light trucks, medium trucks, motorcycles, and racing tires.

Cooper Discover Rugged Trek Reviews

Check out our reviews if you’re seeking for all-season truck and SUV tires built for adventure!

The Rugged Trek, released in early 2021 from Cooper , is a cross between a mud-terrain tire and an all-terrain tire.

This is an all-season tire for trucks and SUVs designed for off-roading adventures while also providing exceptional performance on the highway for regular usage. A 60000-mile guarantee comes included on the tire.

The product also gives drivers the option of choosing between two distinct top designs for the sidewalls, one on each tire side, for a distinctive look. Off-road traction is updated with long, deep cleats on both sides, along with black raised writing in all sizes.

Pros & Cons

  • Off-road prowess is incredible.
  • Highway travel is pleasant and calm.
  • Mud tire with a combative look
  • Reliable treadwear with long warranty
  • They are an AT, not a dedicated road tire

Personal Thoughts

If you think that a decibel meter app on your phone can accurately measure scientific qualities, then we can tell you that these tires are many decibels quieter than stock size Falkens with 50% wear.

At interstate speeds, a 285/70 with an 18/32′′ tread is quieter than a 265/70 with a 7/32′′ tread. It was a great surprise for customers. We couldn’t hear anything but the standard AT hum.

Wet Conditions

Cooper did an excellent job of removing water from between the treads with their siping. These tires appear to be quite well-anchored on wet pavement from mild speeds to interstate speeds.

Because they’re an AT and not a specialized road tire, they hydroplane a little, but not to the point of being dangerous.

Performance On Dirt, Gravel, And Rock

These tires adhered to the gravel forest service roads like concrete after they were down to around 20 psi. The strong sidewalls protected the tire from slipping off of whatever it came into contact with.

Small to medium-sized pebbles and roots, uneven terrain, and loose dirt were no problem for them.

Mud Terrain

Although this is not a designated Mud Terrain tire, they could get and keep traction, and the lugs were cleaned effectively. It was like driving on an ice rink in the latter case.

The increased tread depth and space between lugs help these tires perform better in mud than a conventional AT tire. If we were going to be driving in a lot of mud regularly, we would go for an MT, but this is ideal for the performance and other advantages.

A Closer Examine

The Discoverer Rugged Trek has an all-season tread pattern with huge shoulder scoops that scrape out dirt, sand, and mud, letting you easily navigate soft terrain.

Stable TracTM Technology improves traction and handling in difficult conditions while jutting ridges evacuate stuck stones and protect against harm from sharp pebbles.

This durable tire also has dual sidewall designs and class-leading tread depths (16/32″ for SUV sizes; 18.5/32″ for LT). Finally, specifically built sound barrier walls minimize road-noise, resulting in a more pleasant on-road driving experience.

Who Should Buy This Tire?

We can see the Discoverer Rugged Trek as an aggressive All-Terrain tire that incorporates the company’s newest technology.

The shifted shoulder block contains the Earth Diggers Technology, allowing it to grip better in the deep mud, dirt, or sand and increase traction when traveling off-road. This item is the ideal tire if you want to conquer on- and off-road terrain, thanks to its aggressive and robust appearance. We hope that our reviews will assist you in making an educated selection!

If you’re looking for a tire that can handle some tough terrain, these tires will do the job as they offer reliable traction and minimal slippage when conditions get muddy. However, despite having only 300 miles so far on them, it is worth noting their somewhat higher noise levels compared to other brands with an equal treadwear – although this should be kept in check by ‘whisper grooves’. In any case those seeking rugged off-road tyres may find these favourable but if most of your driving time involves plenty of highway journeys then its best to look elsewhere!

Avatar

Over the years, I have been both a tire seller and driver. With 11,500 miles under its belt atop Cooper’s Whisper Grooves tires, my truck has proved itself to be an exceptional ride with excellent tread wear measurement of 12/32 at this mark -16/32 when new. Rotations are recommended every 3-5 thousand miles as shallower all terrain tires can slow down wear in comparison to deep-tread ones where the first few 32nds tend to experience more strain over time.

Cooper tires have created the perfect tire for anyone wanting a fierce-looking tyre without sacrificing ride comfort or noise. Beneficial features such as no shoulder cupping, perfectly balanced tyres and superior wet traction add to its excellence; making it an A grade on snow grip. With longer rotation intervals possible due to these benefits, highway motorists can look forward hitting the jackpot with Cooper’s aggressive pick up!

Avatar

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with these tires in all weather conditions. Despite the aggressive tread pattern, they remain relatively quiet thanks to their 20″ stock wheels which are incredibly stable and robust enough for my F250 even when under a 2,400lbs fifth wheel trailer. After 5k miles of use I anticipate being able to get 40k out of them – no rubbing or side flex at full lock either! These have been great tires so far and highly deserving of another go around from me whenever it’s time for new ones.

Avatar

I had been so excited to try out these tires on my 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2, having experienced mixed luck with Coopers in the past. After 10k miles of frequent rotation at Discount Tire however, I’ve noticed that they are far louder than a worn set of Cooper STT’s would be and have suffered from cupping – much to everyone’s surprise!

Despite running them at 35 psi as advised for an XL tire not classified as E-rated, I’m sadly disappointed by their cost vs performance ratio and recommend looking into Goodyear or BFG tires instead – known brands that tend to last longer before issues arise.

With an aggressive tread pattern and great traction in deep snow, these tires got you through any slippery roads with ease. However, after 10k miles of use they have shown signs of wearing down – noticeable cupping and loud noise levels that went from a 4 to above 10+.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are off-road tires and all-terrain tires the same.

On most occasions, the names are used interchangeably, but they aren’t the same. All-terrain tires can take on gravel and off-roading while still being capable enough for normal roads and highways. Off-road tires are meant for vehicles that will be spending most of their time away from normal road conditions and taking on rougher terrains more frequently.

Mud tires vs off-road tires

Off-road tires are meant for primarily off-roading use but still can be serviceable if you need to drive on normal roads. Mud tires on the other hand are all about off-roading and can be very unpleasant on-road. Mud terrain tires make more road noise, have a shorter tread life and are more expensive but remain unmatched with their excellent performance off-road.

Are off-road tires good in the snow?

Off-road tires can be very capable in the snow , especially those with the three-peak mountain snowflake rating. They can be effective in the snow but dedicated snow tires are still the best tires for light and heavy snow conditions.

Zietlow selects latest Goodyear Wrangler tyres for Dakar-Moscow record attempt

cooper rugged trek tyres

To market the launch of the new Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure , Goodyear is supporting Rainer Zietlow in his attempt to drive 5,000 miles from Dakar to Moscow in a world record time of less than four days. The German adventurer and his co-drivers began the world record attempt on Saturday, setting out from the Senegalese capital in a Wrangler-shod Volkswagen Amarok.

The journey will test the Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure tyres in a range of conditions, from the sandy desert of the Sahel region to the often-tricky roads encountered in Eastern Europe. In addition to relying upon the Goodyear tyre’s grip and durability, Zietlow will draw upon prior experience gained during five world record runs, including his Norway to South Africa journeys in 2014 and 2015 and his drive from Russia to Portugal last year. This year’s journey takes him through ten countries: Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia. He will cross the Mediterranean by ferry from Tanger to Tarifa.

As he did with his previous challenges, Zietlow will donate the funds he raises to the charity SOS Children’s Village in Senegal, which he visited just before commencing the world record run. Rainer Zietlow will donate around 1,500 euros, which is roughly 20 euro cents per kilometre driven.

“The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure is our latest tyre to carry the legacy of the award-winning Wrangler family,” says Martijn de Jonge, brand director Consumer PBU EMEA at Goodyear. “The tyre’s improved toughness, versatility and increased mileage will support Rainer and his team brilliantly during this demanding challenge.”

“With Goodyear as a partner we have reliable tyres that offer the on-and off-road performance that we will definitely need. The Kevlar reinforced Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure’s durability is a huge help when attempting to establish a new world record,” adds Rainer Zietlow.      sg

Why You Should Only Use Moscow Mule Copper Mugs With Stainless Steel Lining

Dec 01, 2017

Recently in the media there have been many articles warning the public of the dangers of drinking Moscow Mules and other cocktails out of copper mugs. With sensationalist headlines like “ Are Moscow Mule Copper Mugs Really Poisoning People?” you have good reason to be concerned and conduct your own research! As lovers of the traditional Moscow Mule drink and other cocktails served in a copper mug, we wanted to take this opportunity to dive into why it’s so important to always use a stainless steel lined copper mug like ours when enjoying your favorite cocktail.

The Origin of the Copper Mug

The Moscow Mule is a popular drink made of vodka, ginger beer, and freshly squeezed lime served over ice in a copper mug. It’s a refreshing cocktail that is said to have been invented in 1941 in a Los Angeles British Pub called Cock ’n’ Bull. Legend has it the owners of a vodka, ginger beer and copper mug company all found themselves in that pub on the same day lamenting about how slow their sales had been. Together along with the pub bartender, they devised a recipe for the Moscow Mule served in a distinctive copper mug. One of the creators traveled the US taking pictures of patrons drinking the cocktail with Polaroid cameras, a cutting edge invention of the day. As the Polaroids began to circulate, so too did the popularity of this novel cocktail. The Moscow Mule was born.

While originally the copper mug might have been paired with the Moscow Mule purely as a marketing gimmick, it turned out the mugs had some interesting properties that enhanced the popular cocktail. Copper mugs help keep cocktails cold for longer and with less ice than a typical glass. The copper in the mug also reacts with the lime and ginger beer to give the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail more of a ‘kick’. But as it turns out, the kick from the reaction between a pure copper mug and the ingredients of a Moscow Mule might actually be detrimental to your health!

Why Copper Mugs Without Stainless Steel Lining Are Dangerous

copper mug filled with liquid and ice placed on a glass coaster

While copper is an important essential mineral, it is also a heavy metal that reacts with acidic liquids such as cocktail ingredients. Any acidic drink will corrode the copper contained in a mug without a stainless steel  lining, which will then leach back into the drink and increase the level of copper consumed.

In some cases, you may be able to detect a metallic taste in your drink, which can provide a warning that there is too much copper in your drink and that you should not continue drinking it. However, in some cases, the flavors in your cocktail may mask the presence of excessive copper in the drink, thereby leading you to believe that your drink is safe.

The rate at which copper will leach into a drink depends on a variety of factors including the acidity level of the drink, its temperature, the quality of the copper mug, and the length of time the drink remains in the mug – but there is no doubt that copper leaching is inevitable in any copper mug that does not have a protective stainless steel  lining, and there is no doubt that the leaching process begins immediately upon contact.

How acidic does a drink need to be before you should be concerned about having it in a copper mug? According to a recent report released by Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division, and in keeping with Food and Drug Administration guidelines, copper should not come into contact with acidic foods with a pH below six. The pH of a traditional Moscow Mule, along with many of your favorite beverages, is well below 6, largely as a result of the alcohol and other acids contained in the cocktail.

The term pH refers to the acidity or alkalinity of liquids and is expressed on a scale of 0 to 14. Liquids with a pH below 7, like lemon juice, are considered acidic while liquids with a pH above 7, like liquid soap, are considered alkaline. Liquids with a pH of 7, like water, are considered neutral. Liquids like wine, beer, fruit juice, soda, tea (and even water with a dash of lemon in it) all have pHs well below 6. In short, the only safe use of a pure copper mug is for drinking water, which has a neutral pH.

Accordingly, if you use a copper mug that is not lined with stainless steel  with any drink that is even slightly acidic, the acidic fluids in your drink will cause a chemical reaction which will literally cause you to ingest large amounts of copper, leading to an unhealthy and potentially dangerous concentration of copper in your body.

The matter is so significant that the Food and Drug Administration has prohibited food or drink with pH levels below 6 from coming into contact with copper at licensed premises like bars or restaurants. The Food and Drug Administration also requires that anyone serving beverages through pipes must ensure that sufficient mechanisms are in place to ensure that copper is prevented from leaching into the drinks.

High concentrations of copper are very poisonous and have caused various food borne illnesses. Symptoms of copper poisoning include abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and jaundice, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health . In fact, in one report published in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers discovered an outbreak of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea among party-goers who had consumed cocktails at a party that have been sitting in copper cocktail shakers. The researchers determined that the concentration of copper in the drinks caused symptoms of chemical food poisoning precipitated by the consumption of alcohol on an empty stomach.

While one drink from a copper mug without stainless steel  lining won’t kill you, long-term exposure can pose serious health issues such as liver problems and low blood pressure. In some cases, severe copper poisoning can cause liver failure and death.

This recent report comes as no surprise to chefs and food scientists who have, for centuries, known to never use copper cookware with acidic recipes like tomato sauce. Beyond the negative health effects, using copper cookware with acidic foods results in metallic tasting recipes. No thanks!

However, while copper cookware has been used for centuries, the use of copper mugs with cocktails such as the Moscow Mule is a relatively new phenomenon and has only recently achieved widespread popularity. As a result, the health risks of using copper mugs without stainless steel  lining have not received the same attention until now.

The Solution: Stainless-Lined Copper Mugs

The good news is that not all copper Moscow Mule mugs are created equal. Some are lined with stainless steel , including our copper mugs . Why is stainless steel  lining so important? In short, unlike copper, stainless steel does not corrode or otherwise react when put in contact with acidic liquids. As a result, a cocktail or other drink enjoyed in a stainless steel   lined copper mug will not experience any copper leaching, which means that your health is fully protected!

In fact, Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division recommends that if bar and restaurant owners are going to use copper mugs for acidic drinks such as the Moscow Mule, then they should use copper mugs lined with stainless steel  in order to avoid copper leaching.

In order to protect the health of our customers, we specifically choose to only manufacture and sell copper mugs made from 100% pure high-grade and food-safe copper with an inner layer of high-grade stainless steel . As a result, you can enjoy your favourite cocktail in one of our copper Moscow mule mugs for years to come without worrying about copper poisoning or other negative health effects.

Cocktails from our Moscow Mule mugs taste pure and fresh. Like the original Moscow Mule mugs, ours are also great insulators that help keep your drink cold and frosty. The stainless steel lining in our copper mugs also has an added functional benefit. In particular, because copper is a very soft metal, it can become damaged by repeated use. Stainless steel plating increases the strength and durability of your copper mug and greatly extends its life!

Cleaning your stainless steel  lined copper mug is simple. Clean the inside of your copper mug with warm water, soap and a soft cloth and dry it immediately. Be sure to never wash your copper mug with detergents or in a dishwasher. The exterior of the mug will naturally patina over time, which many of our customers enjoy. If you wish to remove the patina, simply sprinkle a pinch of salt on a slice of lemon, allow the salt to dissolve, and then gently rub it on the surface of the mug. The lemon and salt will form a mixture that will naturally remove the patina and restore the copper’s shine. Once done, rinse with water and dry well.
