Reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We would 100% use destination drivers again.

Our driver was awesome! Super sweet and patient even after we had a few glasses and decided car karaoke was a good idea! She was on time and brought water bottles for the group and let us store snacks in her cooler! This was definitely the best way to wine taste without the stress of who was driving. Customer service/booking has been great with answering any questions we had as well.

The Way To Go in Wine Country!

We had Tara and she was so fantastic. She knew her way around and she drove very well. Nice and smooth and courteous. It is the way to go in wine country. Sean wrote to me very shortly after I booked and confirmed everything and then sent a reminder again a few days before. Great communication.

Couldn't Have Asked for a Better Experience!

The service provided by Destination Drivers was truly top notch. Our driver was super accommodating, knowledgeable, and friendly. Our next trip will definitely include Destination Drivers as part of the wine tasting adventure.

Venture up the Sonoma Valley to the wineries with a variety of our local favorites. The Sonoma coast may be the most breathtaking area of California. From the inland valleys, wind down the vineyard lined road, and cross old bridges towering above the Russian River. This area is where some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards meet the coastal redwoods before continuing westward to the Pacific Ocean. The river meets the Pacific in the town of Jenner where a collection of wildlife awaits your camera including seals, pelicans, and blue herons.

In many parts of the country, caves are reserved for bats. In wine country, you’re more likely to find wine barrels in caves. Winemakers have long known that the pristine, protected conditions of these underground caverns offer an ideal cool and humid climate for the wine-aging process. Wine tasters, meanwhile, have discovered the other cool factors of caves – touring and sipping. Many local wineries open their caves to visitors offering sit down tastings or guided walks, and some invite you to taste straight from the barrel. Bats, however, aren’t invited to the party.

Jarvis Estates  Del Dotto Vineyards  Pride Mountain Vineyards  Schramsberg Vineyards  Repris  Deerfield Ranch Winery  Kunde Family Winery  Benziger Family Winery

One of the best sounds is the popping of a champagne bottle. California has some of the best sparkling wine producers in the world.  Both Napa and Sonoma counties cover all your bubbly desires.  From Brut to Rose to Sweet, they all offer quite a treat. Spend the day toasting with friends at a variety of sparkling wine producers.

Northern California is truly an oasis of breweries. Not only are the wineries here world renown…. but breweries have built quite a reputation for themselves as well. Some of the beers are enjoyed nationally, while others are local tap rooms.  Venture to multiple breweries to fulfill all your hop headed desires.

The Best Driving Route Through Napa Valley

driving wine tour

Of the New World wine regions, Napa Valley is considered one of the finest. Therefore, it’s a must-visit for any wine lover. It’s a premier destination for millions of Americans and world travelers alike who want to get a taste of what the California valley has to offer — in both wine and sights.

It’s no secret that Californians have a dynamic approach to business — and their approach to wine (and wine country) is no different. They’re not going to shy away from experimenting with new marketing plans or methods of producing wine. Napa Valley also has a number of unique wine tours and innovative wineries to check out. So many, in fact, that you’d have a hard time visiting them all even with an extended trip. But that’s no reason not to try!

Below, I’ll outline my preferred route for driving through Napa Valley, highlighting all of the must-see landmarks and best places to stop along the way.

Before You Start The Napa Valley spans about 30 miles, and is made up of six towns, with Calistoga in the North and Napa in the South. So, no matter which direction you’re coming from — such as San Francisco or Sacramento — you’ll be able to navigate the area pretty easily. Just be sure to keep traffic in mind when you plan your trip. Use Google Maps (or a real-time maps app equivalent) to ensure that you’re on the fastest route possible. Then, once you get to the valley, you can slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Start in the South, at Napa The best way to travel through Napa Valley is to start in the south and work your way north. You should start by checking out downtown Napa off of Route 29. Here you’ll find plenty of shopping, restaurants, wine bars, and even the Napa Valley Opera House. Depending on when you arrive, you may want to stay downtown for the night, enjoying a fine meal and a good night’s sleep before heading off to explore the rest of the valley.

driving wine tour

Take the Scenic Route From downtown Napa, head east on Route 121 for a nice, scenic drive through the foothills. This will turn into Monticello Road, and veer north not long after. Along this road you’ll see the Monticello Rocks, a nature preserve, and Old Man Rock, which is — you guessed it — a giant rock that resembles an old man. To continue the loop around the valley, you’ll want to turn left onto Route 128 (Capell Valley Road), which will come out on the Silverado Trail, right in the heart of Napa Valley. Before you hit the Silverado Trail, check out Lake Hennessey and the Napa County Regional Park for some breathtaking views. This is a great place to hike, kayak, or simply relax.

Take the Silverado Trail Once you’ve hit the Silverado Trail, continue heading north towards Calistoga. This road will provide you with beautiful views of vineyards, and it usually sees less traffic than Route 29 (128).

driving wine tour

Take a Detour to St. Helena From the Silverado Trail, turn left onto Pope St. and make your way into St. Helena for the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum . A visit to the museum of this imaginative author will be sure to add some education and inspiration to your trip. This would also be a great time to grab a bite to eat. From St. Helena, you’ll get onto Route 128 and head north towards Calistoga.

End Your Trip in Calistoga It won’t take long at all to get to Calistoga from St. Helena. Why not end your trip at one of the many spas in the area? Or, if you’re still feeling adventurous, head to the Oat Hill Mine Trail for a challenging hike through the gorgeous, rocky terrain. If you’re sick of hiking but still want an adventure, schedule an early-morning hot air balloon with Calistoga Balloons .

With this basic driving route in mind, feel free to branch out and add detours to some of the new wineries you’re curious about. After all, did you really go to Napa Valley if you didn’t go on a wine tour?

Rated #1 Wine country Drivers in Sonoma! ★★★★★

icon

A must in Napa Valley. It's a bit overwhelming when planning what wineries to visit, especially if it's your first visit. Rick, our driver, was very helpful and gave great recommendations and helped plan our day. He kept us on schedule and is extremely personable and polite. My wife and I look forward to using We Drive on our next visit to Sonoma and Napa. Highly recommended!

Good experience overall. Our driver, Rick, safely got us to all our destinations the two days he helped us out. Months before, he even was willing to get on the phone with me for an hour to consult on the wineries worth checking out before we landed on the perfect itinerary each day. Once I shared the final plan, it couldn’t have gone smoother.

Linda was wonderful! We wanted someone to drive us around so we could enjoy the wine and we lucked out with Linda! She was friendly, knowledgeable, a wonderful photographer and so kind. We highly recommend!

Use the WeDrive service! We have since our first pilgrimage to wine country. We were driven by Rick Spadoni on Saturday. Outstanding! Book with him and contact before booking wineries if you want recommendations from a knowledgeable guide.

Great time with Linda Colleen as we visited two wineries and a vodka distillery in Sonoma. Linda was a safe driver, extremely knowledgeable with many fun facts about the area, and overall a great personality which led to a very fun day. Looking forward to our next trip back and will certainly look to schedule Linda again at We Drive.

Had a wonderful experience in Napa with Linda Colleen and We Drive. Linda did more than just drive us around to the wineries. She is extremely knowledgeable about the area. She helped us plan our visit - suggesting and making reservations at vineyards and restaurants. It was spectacular. We will definitely call Linda again if we are in the area. I cannot recommend her enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

What to expect on a wine tour

What to Expect on a Wine Tour

driving wine tour

When travelling across the world, there is always an opportunity to learn new skills, develop a taste for new cuisine, enjoy local experiences and meet new people. This, of course, can all be experienced on a wine tour.

Travel to: France

Whether you’re stopping for a quick tipple while driving through wine regions or joining a specialist, multi-day wine-tasting tour  in Europe or other parts of the world, a winery tour is always a good idea – and even better when you have a designated driver!

Before you go, we’ve collected some useful tips to help you understand what to expect when visiting a winery and how to choose a perfect experience for you.

What to expect on a wine tour

How to choose your winery visit

With so many options across the globe, it can be difficult to know where to start. Naturally, you might be drawn to wineries or wines that you’re familiar with, but travelling also gives you the opportunity to sample new varieties.

Commercial Vs small business?

Europe certainly has no shortage of winemakers, ranging from industrial size factories with generations of family history to small, family-run businesses who produce comparatively minuscule amounts of wine per year, used mainly for local consumption. These are the kinds of wines you’ll never see on the shelf back home and a great souvenir to take back with you (if the bottle makes it that far).

Old world vs new world?

Do some research to understand what wines are typical of the region you’re visiting for the most authentic experience. Many grape varieties have been exported around the globe for cultivation in new lands, but it’s always interesting to get back to the source and understand how world famous varieties found their roots.

It’s also important to note that wines can often be categorised as the old world or new world wines.

See Also: How to See the Most of France on Your Bike

Old world wines often originate in Europe, including the likes of Bordeaux , Chianti, Vermentino, and will usually be made according to strict rules and regulations, being limited to grape cultivation only in certain areas. These are referred to as AOC or DOC in France, Italy and Spain respectively, which can be found on the label.

New world wines, on the other hand, are often the winemaker’s playground, where they make the rules, cultivating varieties outside of their region of origin and often mixing non-traditional cuvees.

It also helps to consider which kind of wine experience you’re more interested in when selecting a winery. Are you a traditionalist or a modernist? Are you interested more in deepening your wine knowledge, or taking a more light-hearted approach and simply supporting a local wine-maker who works with your favourite grape variety? The choice is yours!

What to expect on a wine tour

Getting there

If you’re driving, simply make sure you have a designated driver and check out the winery’s website for directions. If your winery visit is included on a tour, this bit is easy and no-one has to worry about having to hold back if you’ve chosen your perfect winery experience.

If you’re an independent traveller, it’s always best to call ahead. Larger wineries will conduct group tours at different allotted times throughout the day in various languages, whereas a smaller winery may only be open for a visit that is pre-arranged, so it’s not only a time-saver but also simply courteous to plan ahead.

What to expect on a wine tour

Although the wine tour experience will vary from one winery to the next, it is safe to say that there will always be certain things you can reasonably expect to encounter.

The property

Your tour will usually follow the wine-making process itself, starting with explaining harvest, grape selection, fermentation, ageing and bottling before tasting.

One of the most romantic parts of visiting a winery is gazing out across the endless rows of vines with grapes just waiting to be brought to maturity. This is often where the tour will begin, before heading indoors to the processing area and finally, down to the cellar where you can surround yourself with beautiful wooden barrels and endless rows of bottles.

What to expect on a wine tour

When I started doing wine tours I was interested in learning about the different ways in which the wine itself was produced and the processes involved which impacted the distinct flavors of wines. This level of understanding helped me better appreciate what I was drinking as well as determine what wines I prefer and why. While I was fascinated with the process of wine-making when I first took tours, I am not so interested in that aspect of it now. So I make sure to seek out tours that are organized around things I do like; some tasting with food, a combination of winery visits with other destination highlights, etc. Not every wine tour is the same, so make sure that you find one built around your interests. – Carol, Girl Gone Travel

The wine and the history of the winery

Throughout your visit, you will typically learn about the grape varieties in the region and how wine is made. If you are visiting multiple wineries in the same region, you will usually find this part a little repetitive, but there are often small nuances which differ from one visit to the next.

Winemakers are often following on a family tradition, even at the big wineries like the famous Marques de Riscal in La Rioja, Northern Spain. Needless to say, the family history will feature strongly in your wine tour too.

What to expect on a wine tour

I enjoy how a wine tour fuses tourism and authentic Spanish culture together, to create an immersive experience. In Spain, the wineries I visited were family-owned and operated. It’s truly a way of life and a means of income for Spaniards in La Rioja. It was wonderful to see locals and tourists support them. To anyone interested in a wine tour, I would say go during autumn. The vineyards are the most beautiful and vibrant from September to October! Also, if you’re in a place with multiple wineries, book two in one day. Each wine tour has a different vibe. – Sojourner, Sojournies

Obviously, this is the fun part! A standard wine tasting tour will have you sampling anything from one to six wines, and some may even have small bites of local meats and cheeses to accompany your tasting. Tasting sizes are often around half the amount of a regular glass of wine.

See Also: 18 Most Affordable Places to Travel for Under $18 a Day

Often your guide will give you some pointers on what you’re looking for in the glass visually, as well as explain the aroma and bouquet. Of course, you will have an opportunity to buy directly from the winemaker too, with some offering shipping options for larger quantities.

The Perfect Road Trip Through California Wine Country

By Mara Balagtas

Image may contain Wheel Machine Spoke Tire Alloy Wheel Transportation Vehicle Automobile Car and Car Wheel

It's not every day that Porsche comes knocking on your door—and when it does, you say, why yes, I will test drive the latest and greatest in German engineering, if you insist. (This job is not awful.) The 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera made a very buzzy debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this past fall with its newly turbocharged engine, and it was on me to find the perfect setting to put the updated technology through its paces. The destination: Northern California wine country which is, with its winding roads and narrow passes, a slice of some of the best driving on the West Coast.

The car company's new Porsche Communications Management system (PCM) proved to be a crucial tool for mapping out my day-long road trip through the Calistoga region, north toward the Pacific coastline, inland, and back again. Using its integrated Google Earth and Google Street views, I was able to plot pit stops along the route, including lunch with a view (of gray whales migrating!); and I can't complain about the extra horsepower—20 more than the Carrera's older, non-turbocharged brothers. Improvements to traction, driving stability, and turn-in response meant I didn't kick the tail of the car out too much while hugging the lines through the Redwoods.

The 280-mile route below can take you through wine country in a day or less—with a little help from a turbocharge.

Follow my route

START AT: Hotel Solage Calistoga 755 Silverado Trail North, Calistoga; (707) 266-7534

Only 27 miles from Napa, wooden cottages fill the hotel's property, serving as guest quarters. The best part? Each cottage is equipped with bicycles for a leisurely ride anywhere in the resort.

Yorkville Mini Market 26701 CA-128, Yorkville; (707) 894-9456

The best pit stop on the route. Stop here for the best homemade and local treats: ice cream from Cowlick's in Fort Bragg, and blueberry muffins, oatmeal raisin and chocolate cookies made every day from scratch.

Navarro River Redwood State Park Elk; (707) 937-5804

It helps to hit the cooler asphalt beneath the shade of the Redwoods. With the sun peeking through the leaves, you catch just the right amount of temperate air, which is ideal to feed into that spooling turbo.

Albion River Inn 3790 North Highway 1, Albion; (707) 937-1919

One of the most scenic lunch spots on the coast. From the restaurant's Pacific overlook, you may be able to see whales migrating if you time it right (the gray whale's migration is northward from March to May). If you find that the 280-mile trip is a bit much to take on in one day, I suggest staying overnight at one of their gorgeous bungalows.

This image may contain Sea Outdoors Nature Ocean Water Shoreline Land Promontory and Coast

Town of Mendocino

The small town of Mendocino, formerly an old whaling village in the 1970s, is just over seven miles from Albion. Quaint shops and more scenic views await in this coastal town. Make sure to get out and stretch your legs. There's a white wooden fence on the edge of town and just past it are wooden stairs leading down to the shore.

Tank Garage Winery 1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga; (707) 942-8265

On my drive back to Calistoga, I spotted this gas station and repair shop turned winery. With the right car to fit the scene, I pulled up to the vintage gas tanks and made my way inside. It's decked out in car and motorcycle memorabilia: Indian Motorcycles, neon clocks, and used oil cans refurbished into guitars. What's not to love? Just be sure to find a designated driver before you sit down for a taste.

Sinegal Estate Winery 2125 Inglewood Ave, St. Helena; (707) 244-1187

After a full day of driving, this is the perfect place to unwind. Sip on the Sinegal cabernet or head out to the private lake on the winery, but make sure you call ahead—they're only open by appointment.

One day Driving Itinerary in Chianti

The best towns, roads, restaurants & vineyards.

One of the most frequent questions we hear from guests new to Tuscany, “ can we see Chianti in a one day itinerary? ”

This could be interpreted as a trick question since there is so much to appreciate in the Chianti area, and our instinct is to say “no.” However, we realize that not everyone has unlimited time or resources and they need to pack the most into a one-day itinerary.

There are three ways to approach a one day tour of this fabulous region:

  • an organized tour to vineyards & small towns with a professional tour leader
  • personalize your travels but make the traveling easy with a private driver
  • follow our DIY one-day Chianti itinerary

Great scenery and wines in Chianti

Don’t Miss the Beauty of Chianti

The best way to enjoy Chianti is to make it your base for the holidays:

Vacation Apartments & Accommodations in Chianti

Chianti is one of the most beautiful hill areas in Tuscany and maybe in Italy. Renowned all around the world for its Chianti wine production, this region stretches in between Florence and Siena . The landscape is characterized by vineyards and olive groves and fortresses, parish churches and castles.

If you have just one day to spend in Chianti, here we suggest an itinerary in Chianti to get the best out of your Tuscan holiday. We include some driving instructions and times, a general map, names of small towns and the highlights to look for when you stop at each point.

Starting at the Top

Florence is linked to Chianti with the state road called “SS222”, and it is commonly known as the Chiantigiana. The first town you meet is Strada in Chianti, though it has very little historic value, you can enjoy some lovely views, and if you take the deviation and stop in the town square you will find a great coffee and pastry shop (Bar Giambi) with a panoramic terrace.

A quick side trip from Greve could include a stop to Montefioralle , an ancient medieval castle. This small fortress from the 12th century is one of the oldest towns in Chianti and well preserves its original look. Viticcio Winery for a wine tasting.

The first suggested stop is Greve in Chianti , which is traditionally considered the gateway to Chianti. Once inhabited by the Etruscans, this town is perhaps more famous for the great explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. He is celebrated with a statue in the main square, Piazza Matteotti . Stroll the porticos around this three-sided piazza and check out the restaurants and enotecas (wine bars).

Besides finding shops, cafes, a park for the kids, gas stations and banks this small town also has some special treats for shopping local artisan products , wine, and clothing. In fact, you are within walking distance of a  Viticcio Winery for a wine tasting or our list of restaurants,  check out number 4 .

Taking time to Stroll it All

Next destination on our itinerary will take you to Panzano in Chianti . It became famous over the last few years for the butcher shop and restaurant called: Antica Macelleria Cecchini , specializing in an abundant table of fresh cut meats (especially the Florentine steak) and the owner who likes to recite Dante's Divine Comedy .

Just outside Panzano stands the charming 12th century Parish Church of San Leolino which houses precious pieces of sacred artwork

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the entire town centers around the main square which is easily visible from the main street. Park the car and wander back behind the square where you will find the old fortress and church. If it about lunchtime, then this is where you will want to stop! There are a few very panoramic restaurants in the old part of the town (Restaurants in Chianti:  check out number 7 ).

The distance between Panzano in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti: 20 minutes, some panoramic views, several areas with tight curves

You are in Siena-land Now

As you continue along via Chiantigiana you find Castellina in Chianti , which sits in the province of Siena. One of the three towns in the original League of Chianti, Castellina has Etruscan roots and has always played an important role in the battles between Florence and Siena.

The majestic Fortress in the main square and the massive walls are visible signs of its glorious past. Don't miss Via delle Volte , where you can admire a hidden street with shops and enotecas (very romantic), and the Archeological Museum of Senese Chianti which includes a visit to the tower for some awesome panoramic views.

The distance between Castellina in Chianti and Poggibonsi: 35 minutes, though you will find several panoramic views - there will be little else on this stretch of road except for several areas with curves

driving wine tour

The nest stop on our itinerary is Poggibonsi and it is a thriving town where you will find shops, restaurants, gas stations, a park for the kids to stretch their legs, banks, and cafes. Our suggestions for visiting this area keeps you out of the town center but puts you in the heart of some special monuments like Poggio Imperial , the Medici fortress, and the Castello di Staggia . You may have left the area classified as " Chianti Classico " - but that doesn’t mean that you won’t find several excellent options if you want to add wine tastings in Chianti .

Going South

It is easy to swing south and cover Monteriggioni and Siena (45 minutes driving time) instead of going north to Florence. After a visit to the Piazza del Campo and the Duomo of Siena, simply catch the Firenze-Siena highway (1 hour and 15 minutes driving time).

Heading Home Thru the Vineyards

You are now on the upswing back towards Florence, but there are still several places you can stop for the small town flavor and great Chianti panoramic views. This side of Chianti is characterized by a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and a lot fewer curves. Plus, the vistas seem to be more open, not closed in by the Chianti hills. It may even seem less “ touristy ”, but again, don’t be fooled, this area abounds with things to do and places to see.

The distance between Poggibonsi and Barberino Val d’Elsa: less than 15 minutes, fairly straight stretch of road

Extra Time?

The Chapel of San Michele in Semifonte near Petrognano. The chapel is also called the Duomo of Val D'Elsa (1567) and symbolizes the glorious and sad past of Semifonte, that was razed to the ground from Florence around 1200. Another side trip could be to the lovely church of Sant’Appiano

You will be following the SR2 from Poggibonsi towards Florence, and the first stop is Barberino val d’Elsa . If you opt for a quick stop here, enter from the well-conserved Sienese Gate , where there are several beautiful buildings with beautiful wooden doors and clean stone walls, said to be built from the rubble of Semifonte . Barberino is strategically positioned on the crossroads leading towards the via Francigena , which meant that the locals were geared to receive and care for travelers ( l'Ospedale dei Pelligrini ).

The next town you will encounter on this route is Tavarnelle Val di Pesa , where you can visit the Church of Santa Lucia al Borghetto , a rare example of Gothic architecture. Outside the center stands the particular Parish Church of San Piero in Bossolo that hosts the Museum of Sacred Art.

The distance between Barberino Val d’Elsa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa: about 6-7 minutes

Last Stop in Chianti?

Only if you want it to be, there is so much to see in this area. We suggest you stay on the back roads for this last piece of the itinerary , to enjoy to the fullest the scenery. Continuing towards Florence you arrive in San Casciano Val di Pesa , the last town of Chianti; it features a delightful center with shops and restaurants. Few kilometers far there is the Albergaccio of Sant'Andrea in Percussina , today a famous wine cellar situated in the house where Niccolò Machiavelli lived.

Enjoy your one-day itinerary of Chianti at a leisurely pace, adding some of the extras or just admiring the main course. We can assure you that this path will take you on a beautiful day trip in Chianti.

How to Get Around California Wine Country Without Driving

Visiting a fraction of the more than 400 wineries in the northern California wine country is a vacation to remember. Many of the wineries in the Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley and elsewhere are accessible by flying into San Francisco International Airport  or Sonoma County Airport, renting a car, and driving about 1.5 hours north to wine country. The problem is, if you plan on consuming any of the area’s delicious wines (and not immediately spitting it back out!), going to wineries while driving is a problem. And while there are some forms of lodging serving wine from local wineries, or that offer shuttle services to local wineries, the actual wineries do not have places to stay on their property. Luckily there are some solutions to this transportation problem beyond calling a cab or having a designated driver – maybe more than you thought! One note before we get started on the recommendations: You need to be 21 years or older to take part in any of these wine-related activities due to the legal drinking age in the US.

Hop on a Wine Trolley

San Francisco Trolley

Ride around wine country in a historic converted trolley like this one

Riding around on one of the two historic cable cars is an easy way to get from one winery to another without getting behind the wheel. You can choose from the Napa Valley Wine Trolley or the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley. Each tour has various options for stops and food and you get to stop at 3 or 4 wineries along the way. The Napa Valley tour leaves from downtown Napa, and the Sonoma Valley tour leaves from Sonoma Plaza in Sonoma. If you are staying at one of the trolley tours’ hotel partners they will provide transportation to the start of the tours.

Ride on Horseback

Vineyard horseback riding

You can take a horseback ride through vineyards and then sample wines

This is only a partial day activity but worth it because you get to ride through vineyards, and have a wine tasting afterward! The Rapp Ranch guides take you on rides through the Shadybrook Estate Winery, located only about 3 miles from downtown Napa. That means you can easily take a cab to and from your horseback riding experience.

Tour Wineries in a VW Van

Volkswagen bus

Ride around wine country in a VW bus like this

Travel to your wine tasting in style with an 8-hour tour in a vintage Volkswagen van. A company called West Wine Tours allows you to book a seat or an entire VW bus for a 5.5 hour tour. If you book the whole bus for a group of up to 6 or 8 people, they will pick you up and drop you off where you are staying but only in the Sonoma Valley or downtown Sonoma. These tours are also customizable, so you can either let the guide take you to their choice of wineries or make a custom itinerary.

Tour by Bike

Napa road through vineyard

Ride on a path like this through vineyards

The Napa Valley Vine Trail is a protected bike path winding through the area rich with vineyards. This biking and walking path will eventually be 47 miles long, stretching from Vallejo along San Pablo Bay in the south to Calistoga in the northern Napa Valley. There is a 12.5 mile section already completed that goes from John F. Kennedy Park just south of Napa, north to Yountville. And there are options to rent a bike from places in both Napa and Yountville, with plenty of wineries to visit along the bike route.

Ride the Wine Train

Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train

Perhaps the most deluxe non-driving option on the list, the Napa Valley Wine Train allows you to travel in style to different wineries on a refurbished vintage train. You can take a half or full-day ride through wine country, stopping at different wineries along the way. This is also a good option if you want to stay over in wine country and not have to drive at all once you get there. The wine train has several hotel partners, some of which offer winery tour packages where they take care of the transportation.

Hire a Designated Driver

Castello di Amorosa winery

Visit wineries like Castello di Amorosa in the Napa Valley without driving yourself

There are several companies offering designated driver services in both Napa and Sonoma valleys. If you are renting a car with Sixt or another car rental company and would like to use a service like this, make sure to check with your branch to see if it is allowed and what steps you need to take. The designated driver service is straightforward: You hire a driver by the hour and they take you around to different wineries. In many cases the driver also acts as a tour guide and knows their way around the wineries and can tailor a tour to meet your needs.

If you have decided to visit wine country, Sixt has three stations in San Francisco to make your journey easy. You can find us at San Francisco International Airport , in San Francisco Union Square , or at Fisherman’s Wharf. A convertible or sports car are both perfect for driving through wine country, although we also have SUVs and minivans for larger groups.

10 scenic road trips from seattle for the ultimate adventure.

road trips from seattle

One of my absolute favorite things to do throughout the year is to go on road trips from Seattle and explore new areas. Who doesn’t love the thrill of hitting the open road and discovering all sorts of hidden gems along the way? I know it’s not always affordable to go on vacation, or you may not have the time, so the best part about road trips is being able to go on these for any duration, any time of the year.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know there are so many amazing places to choose from in the Seattle area, so narrowing down your options can be tough. Luckily for you, I’ve been cruising around the Pacific Northwest for years now, so I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite scenic drives from Seattle that you can turn into epic Seattle road trips of your own.

To make things even easier, I’ve organized these road trips based on their length – so you can pick and choose what works best for you based on your time constraints. Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway from Seattle or an extended adventure, I’ve got you covered. With that, let’s dive into some of the best road trips from Seattle and all the essential info you need to prepare for them!

Need help planning out your road trip? I’ve been using Roadtrippers for years to see exactly how long it’ll take from one point to the next and find new places to add to my itinerary!

Tips for a Seattle Road Trip

Here are some tips to consider first before going on a road trip near Seattle.

  • Check traffic first. This may seem obvious, but many people forget that traffic tends to get worse around Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia at rush hour, so this can add hours to your road trip if you don’t time it right (and I say this from experience!). The best place to check it for Washington is the WSODT website .
  • Be prepared if crossing passes. Similar to the tip above, always check the same website to see how the passes look if you’ll be crossing them. This is the worst place to be stuck, as there often isn’t anywhere to turn around. I once planned a trip to the other side of the mountains after we’d had a warm week in April, only for the day of my planned trip to get completely dumped in snow and the passes ended up closing. If it’s snow season, always bring chains , blankets, and food/water just in case.
  • Check the weather. Even if you’re not going into the mountains, you’ll want to know if the roads you plan on going around might be slick with rain or ice and pack appropriately.
  • Don’t have a tight itinerary. I know not everyone can take as many days off as they want for a vacation, but avoid the temptation to jam-pack your trip with stops. It’s more enjoyable when you know you have time to make random stops along the way or don’t have to get stressed if you do get caught in traffic.
  • Take breaks . I’m the queen of making a tight itinerary when I travel, but I’ve learned over the years this doesn’t benefit anyone. You and your passengers will get tired, which is not only unsafe for the driver but means the trip won’t be as fun. Plan for breaks ahead of time or be flexible and take one if it feels like a good time.

What to Pack for a Road Trip From Seattle

You’ll want to make sure you’re prepared for any Seattle road trip you take, whether it’s only a few days or a week. I have an entire article on road trips essentials , but here are some of the ones I recommend most:

  • Water bottle – I fill up multiple water bottles and put ice in them so they stay nice and cool, and I’m also hydrated during my trip.
  • Cooler – Save money by bringing your own snacks and keeping them cold in your cooler. This is also helpful if you buy food on the road and don’t finish it but need to keep it cold.
  • Coffee mug – I love treating myself to a latte now and then, but I don’t want to waste cups on the road every day getting a new drink. Having a reusable coffee mug helps with that problem.
  • Polarized sunglasses – It can get really bright on the road depending on what the sun reflects on, so keep yourself safe and have a good pair of sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen – You’ll need sunscreen when you’re out and about exploring, but it’s also important to have it on when you’re in the car as well. You can have one side of your face and arm exposed for hours, depending on the time of day.

10 Road Trips From Seattle You’ll Want to Go On

With so many amazing destinations to choose from, it’s hard to narrow it down to just 10, but I’ve compiled a list of some of the best road trips from Seattle that are my favorites. Get ready to hit the open road and explore the stunning natural landscapes and charming towns of the Pacific Northwest!

1. Olympic Peninsula

seattle road trips washington coast

Distance: 361 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Port Angeles , Forks

A road trip around the Olympic Peninsula is the perfect way to reconnect with nature and the best road trip from Seattle for many people. I live near one of the ferries going here, so I am lucky to be able to visit the area often.

Take your car on the Bainbridge ferry to Bainbridge, where you’ll find tons of things to do on Bainbridge Island . The ferry ticket costs $20.40 (for the vehicle and the driver) and will take you over Elliott Bay, offering stunning views in Seattle of the water during one of the best Seattle road trips.

Alternatively, you can also take the ferry from Edmonds to Kingston (make sure to check out all the things to do in Edmonds first).

From Bainbridge Island, head south on Highway 305 and cross Hood Canal Floating Bridge. Get onto the Olympic Highway (Highway 101) , which will take you on a picturesque drive past Discovery Bay and the west side of Sequim Bay.

Spend the night at the quaint coastal town of Port Angeles at a place like Port Angeles Inn  during one of the short road trips from Seattle. It has a bustling marina and beautiful natural landscapes you can explore in the morning before you head out on the road again. You can also look at my full list of where to stay in Olympic National Park .

In the morning, travel inland past Lake Crescent on your way to the magnificent Olympic National Park, where you can spend the night. There are plenty of Olympic hikes to do if you want to get some exercise (my favorites are Marymere Falls and Hurricane Ridge , which are fairly easy hikes in Washington ).

hiking marymere falls

On the morning of day three, take the Olympic Highway along the west coast through Queets. Then travel south to Aberdeen and up through Tacoma to return to Seattle.

Alternatively, you could do a quick Seattle day trip here if you only have one day in Olympic .

2. Columbia River Gorge

Columbia River Gorge

Distance: 389 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Yakima , Portland

Drive through Tacoma and Portland for 3.5 hours to get to the glorious Columbia River Gorge on your road trip near Seattle. The 4,000-feet deep canyon demarcates Washington from Oregon and offers one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the country.

The canyon spans a whopping 80 miles as the river bends through the Cascade Range. You’ll be glad you braved the long road trip from Seattle for this view.

You can either take the same way home or make a loop trip going through Yakima and Snoqualmie Pass. The latter journey will take you one hour longer, but you may be keen on seeing Snoqualmie Pass if you haven’t before.

On this Seattle road trip, you can spend a night in Yakima , Washington (my favorite hotel there is Hotel Maison , located centrally). Otherwise, if you’re going through Portland and looking for things to do in Portland , be sure to check out Washington Park on your way back to Seattle.

There are also plenty of short day trips from Portland to explore before you head home, or you can continue driving from Seattle to Portland .

If you’re a little tired from your journey, the 400-acre park is the perfect place to rejuvenate with some fresh air and a picnic. You can take the 3- or 4-hour road trip to Seattle in the morning, or you can continue on a Seattle to San Diego road trip .

Columbia River Gorge

3. San Juan Island

san juan island me

Distance: 214 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Friday Harbor

Take I-5 north from Seattle north until you reach Burlington, where you can take exit 230 on your road trip from Seattle. You’ll then travel west towards Anacortes, where you can take the ferry (you’ll need an advanced reservation ).

The drive to Anacortes should take about 90 minutes, and the ferry trip is just under 1.5 hours long. I think traveling by ferry is one of the best parts of getting to the San Juan Islands, so enjoy it.

You’ll likely be exhausted once you get there, so book a room at the luxurious Earthbox Inn & Spa . You can familiarize yourself with the incredible San Juan Island in the morning. Filled with activities like whale-watching and kayaking , you’ll never be bored here during one of the more exciting road trips around Seattle.

Take a walk along Friday Harbor or take photos at the extraordinary Pelindaba Lavender Farm . I recommend taking the time to browse all the items in the store (I always get the lavender linen spray). You’ll have to take the same route back, but the ferry over the water is just as inspiring the second time around.

There are also plenty of hikes on the San Juans if you want to get some exercise in.

If you’d like to make a stop on the way home, pull over halfway home at the Boeing Future of Flight Museum . The museum has fascinating exhibits on the evolution of aviation, not to mention the actual disused planes hanging from the ceiling.

If you want to go to another island, Orcas Island and Lopez Island are both easily accessible from San Juan. I do recommend taking a day for each of these so you don’t rush through them, however.

San Juan Island

4. Sea-to-Sky Highway

road trips from seattle sea to sky highway

Distance: 436 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Bellingham , Vancouver (BC) , Whistler

One of my absolute favorite drives in North America is Sea to Sky Highway , where you can go on a road trip to Whistler, Canada, and back. Your first stop is 90 minutes outside of Seattle in the laidback Bellingham . The area has plenty of waterfalls, lakes, and fishing spots, not to mention tons of hiking trails for you to explore.

Boundary Bay Brewing makes the perfect pit stop for lunch and a beer (and it’s my old stomping grounds from when I went to college here years ago).

Spend the night getting to know the town, or head to the rugged coastline of Larrabee Park. Watch a spectacular sunset over the water before you turn in for the night at a local Bellingham lodge, such as Hotel Bellwether .

On Day 2, cross the Canada border on a Seattle to Vancouver drive and stop in Vancouver on your way to Whistler (want to experience more of the city? You can spend 2 days in Vancouver, BC or visit Vancouver in three days on the way up).

This stunning mountain town will take your breath away. I’ve been here in every season, and it’s hard to pick the best time to go because each season has its own charm to it. They also have amazing coffee, so you’ll love visiting all the coffee shops in Whistler .

Go mountain biking in the summer or sledding in the winter. Whistler is postcard-perfect all year round, whether you visit Whistler in the summer or are looking for things to do in Whistler in the winter.

Stay at the superb Summit Lodge Boutique Hotel for a night of luxury. You’ll want to get a good night’s rest before heading back to Seattle in the morning.

The journey back is over 4 hours, but this is your second opportunity to be captivated by the view on the Sea-to-Sky Highway. You can also stop at Canada’s famous White Rock Pier on your way back.

Sea-to-Sky Highway

5. North Cascades Highway

road trips from seattle north cascades

Distance: 424 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Leavenworth , Winthrop

Explore Seattle’s north country on an unforgettable loop trip around the North Cascades National Park, which is one of the best national parks in Washington . The North Cascades Highway is a classic route used by locals and tourists for weekend road trips from Seattle. This is only open from about June until October, so make sure to check road conditions first.

Drive east along Stevens Pass , and you’ll see lush orchids, pine forests, and the slopes of the Cascade mountains until you reach your first stop, Leavenworth .

Stop to check out the Waterfront Park for panoramic views of the Wenatchee River and spend the night in a local lodge (I recommend Icicle Village Resort ). The park has loads of hiking trails for you to explore in the morning, or you can take a kayak out on the water before you get back on the road.

If you want to see a magical Bavarian village in the snow, visit Leavenworth in the winter . Just be aware that the pass can get heavy snow, so make sure your car is prepared with chains.

Once you’re done exploring, take Highway 97 up to visit Lake Chelan for more sightseeing, pass the town of Winthrop , and then head west until you reach North Cascades National Park.

cutthroat lake hike

There are plenty of hikes in North Cascades for you to explore the following day ( Heather-Maple Loop Pass is one of my favorites), after which you can complete the loop of your road trip.

You can go through Rockport and Concrete, heading west towards Mount Vernon, then travel south to get back to Seattle. Since the park is only open seasonally, Seattle in the summer or fall in Seattle are the best times to visit.

North Cascades Highway

6. Vancouver Island

road trip from seattle vancouver island

Distance: 337 miles Number of Days: 3 Where to Stay: Port Angeles , Victoria (BC) , Bellingham

Head north from Seattle to Vancouver, Canada, during this international road trip from Seattle. Stop at the Mount Vernon Lions Club Roadside Park if you need to stretch your legs on this charming Vancouver weekend trip . This charming park sits on the edge of the Skagit River, and there are picnic tables where you can kick back and enjoy the view.

Don’t leave Vancouver without catching the sunset from the Vancouver Lookout . The observation deck offers panoramic views of the city from 550 feet above the ground! This is an excellent way to get a snapshot of the city before you turn in for the night (you’ll love the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront) .

On Day 2, take the 90-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo , a bay town on Vancouver Island that looks out over the Salish Sea. Stop at one of the many restaurants on the harbor for a bite with a waterside view, and then head to Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort for your lodging for the night. I keep staying here every time I come because it’s so charming being right on the ocean.

victoria with kids butchart gardens

After spending the night, drive south to Spectacle Lake for a pleasant swim surrounded by forest trees. Then, hit the road until you hit Victoria on this driving trip from Seattle. This town is also known as the “City of Gardens” thanks to its abundance of parklands. Be sure to check out the renowned Butchart Gardens for an afternoon stroll.

You can rest for the night in Victoria (you may like the Strathcona Hotel ). In the morning, take the ferry to Port Angeles and drive down the Olympic Peninsula to get home.

Vancouver Island

Another beautiful road trip is the Seattle to Banff drive , which takes you through Canada.

7. Willamette Valley

willamette valley youngberg hill sunrise

Distance: 554 miles Number of Days: 4 Where to Stay: McMinnville , Cannon Beach , Olympia

Discover the south coast on a drive through Willamette Valley , one of the best road trips from Seattle if you love wine. You can travel through Portland on your way to McMinnville , where you can indulge in some of the best wine tours in Oregon.

This is also a popular weekend getaway from Portland for many locals – I felt like I was in Sonoma the first time I visited!

There are dozens of wineries to choose from in the area, so you won’t need to worry about a shortage in that department. I personally love Kings Estate Winery, Irish Vineyards, and Kason Vineyards if you want to narrow down your selection. For lodging, I recommend staying at a place like McMenamins Hotel Oregon to relax for the night.

The People’s Coast, Oregon’s stunning coastline, is perfect for whale-watching, tidal pooling, and amazing Pacific Ocean views. Spend the night at the nearby Starfish Manor Oceanfront Hotel to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean.

oregon coast hike

On Day 3, take a detour to Ecola State Park on Cannon Beach as you make your way back to Portland (this is especially nice during wintertime in Portland ). Spot Haystack Rock – one of Oregon’s most famous landmarks – a stunning 234-foot rock formation on the edge of the shoreline. This is one of my favorite parts of an Oregon Coast drive .

Spend the afternoon exploring Portland, where you’ll find loads of coffee houses, parks, cycling trails, and microbreweries. You can check in at the Mark Spencer Hotel downtown and drive back to Seattle in the morning.

Willamette Valley

8. Washington Coast

best road trips from seattle ocean shores

Distance: 462 miles Number of Days: 4 Where to Stay: Long Beach (WA) , Westport (WA)

When you want road trip ideas from Seattle, consider this 3-hour drive from Seattle to Astoria, Oregon . After a night in Astoria, you can embark on a 4-day adventure along the Washington Coast. This is an ideal trip in Seattle during winter , as you won’t encounter much, if any, snow.

First, visit Cape Disappointment , the headland of the Pacific Northwest. You won’t be staying here long, but the views of the lighthouse at the end of the beach are worth a quick stop.

You can spend both your first and second nights in Long Beach (I stay at the Adrift Hotel every time I visit this area!). You’ll be delighted to wake up in this fun coastal town, where you can horse ride on the beach, swim in the ocean, or shop on the boardwalk.

When you’re done frolicking on the sand in Long Beach, drive out to Westport for more beach activities, great views, and fishing on the pier. The trip will take you about an hour and a half, but don’t worry – it’s worth it.

what to do in ocean shores

You can book a room in Westport ( LOGE Westport is always a fun place to stay) and wake up early to explore the place (and check out some amazing Washington surf spots if you’re into that!).

In the morning, take a picturesque drive around North Bay . You’ll go through Aberdeen (the birthplace of legendary Kurt Cobain), where you can stop for fuel. Check out the Kurt Cobain Memorial Park in town if you’re a Nirvana fan.

Your final stop is in Ocean Shores , where you’ll be right by the ocean for your whole trip (and you’ll love all the things to do at Ocean Shores that you’ll find). The Polynesian Resort  is a good choice for an affordable hotel with a view of the water. Luckily, your drive back to Seattle will be under three hours from this charming coastal village.

Want to extend your oceanfront trip? Head down to California for a Big Sur one day trip .

Washington Coast

9. Yellowstone National Park

one day in Yellowstone

Distance: 1,690 miles Number of Days: 6 Where to Stay: Spokane (WA) , Missoula (MT), Bozeman (MT) , Boise (ID)

People from around the world dream about one day visiting Yellowstone National Park. Here’s your chance to go on one of my favorite road trips from Seattle!

You can take a scenic drive through Snoqualmie Pass and stop in Spokane for fuel, food, and rest. If you’re looking for a great hotel, try The Davenport Grand .

Drive past the breathtaking mountain lake Coeur d’Alene on Day 2. You’ll then take the Interstate through the gorgeous scenery of Montana until you reach Missoula. Check out the Missoula Art Museum and spend the night at the La Quinta Inn .

You can hike the Mount Sentinel trail in the morning before hitting the road. It’ll take you three hours to reach Bozeman, Montana , where you can spend the night at The Mountainview Lodge after a long day of hiking and driving.

Alternatively, you could also decide to extend your trip and do a Glacier National Park road trip before heading to Yellowstone.

Drive from Bozeman early on Day 3, and you’ll finally reach Yellowstone , the majestic national park replete with canyons, rivers, and forests. Yellowstone is massive, so you’ll want to spend another day exploring the over 3,000 acres of wilderness.

I have a whole post on taking a road trip from Yellowstone to Seattle for a more detailed itinerary.

Additionally, if you want to spend multiple days at the park, you can look at my Yellowstone 4 day itinerary for suggestions.

To get back to Seattle, travel south through Idaho . You can stop at the Craters of the Moon National Monument and the Umatilla National Forest on your way back. If you need another stop-over town, you can spend the night of Day 5 in Boise.

Yellowstone National Park

10. Washington National Parks

day trip to mt rainier

Distance: 705 miles Number of Days: 8 Where to Stay: Winthrop , Wenatchee , Longmire

Keep reading if you want to see all three of Washington’s national parks on one monumental Pacific Northwest road trip . The North Cascades Highway will take you to North Cascades National Park in about two hours from Seattle.

If you arrive early, you’ll have the entire day to check into a hotel and explore the expansive park. I recommend spending two nights in the area, and Winthrop is a great base (I always stay at Hotel Rio Vista ).

After this, drive through Twisp, Chelan Falls, and Wenatchee. You can spend the night there ( Coast Wenatchee Center Hotel  is in the middle of downtown) and go to spend a day at Mount Rainier in the morning.

Take the scenic drive through Snoqualmie Pass until you reach Mount Rainier . After a long drive, you’ll probably be quite drained, so get some shut-eye and reserve your energy.

You can stay at one of the few hotels there, such as the National Park Inn in Longmire, or a vacation rental like a cute cabin near Mount Rainier . You can spend Day 4 and 5 going on Mount Rainier hikes , riding bikes, and kayaking in the park.

bench and snow lakes mt rainier hikes

If you’re visiting Mount Rainier in the winter , make sure to read my article first to be prepared for the snow.

On Day 6, take the 702 for hours until you reach Olympic National Park . Welcome to the third and final Washington national park! There are activities aplenty in the park, such as plenty of Olympic National Forest hikes, so you can traverse the impressive wilderness for two whole days.

On the morning of Day 8, it’s time to bid the park goodbye and drive two hours back to Seattle through Tacoma.

Washington National Parks

The hardest part will be choosing which of these road trips from Seattle to go on first!

Green countryside near the medieval town of Volterra (province of Pisa) Tuscany

Pisa attracts more than five million tourists yearly to see its world-famous Leaning Tower. But few realize this proverbial “half-day city” is the gateway to Terre di Pisa, one of Italy's newest and most exciting DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine appellations.

This up-and-coming wine region offers an unforgettable experience for wine lovers who want to travel slowly and escape the crowds pervasive in many Italian cities.

Imagine rolling Tuscan hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and passionate winemakers eager to share their craft and explain how their wines are shaped by the contours of the land and centuries of history.

Throughout the province, wine lovers can sip regional wines and savor local food products and dishes, creating a truly Tuscan culinary adventure.

The Wines Of Terre di Pisa: A World of Varietals Awaits

Logo of Terre di Pisa

The Terre di Pisa DOC appellation was established in 2011, attesting to the unique character of the wines.

In 2018, 10 producers formed the Terre di Pisa Wine Consortium to raise awareness and promote the quality of these regional wines; the number has now grown to 19 in 2024.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Terre di Pisa wines offer a symphony of flavors. The carefully controlled Terre di Pisa DOC appellation includes Terre di Pisa Bianco, Terre di Pisa Vermentino, Terre di Pisa Rosato, Terre di Pisa Rosso, and Terre di Pisa Sangiovese.

Visitors can explore reds like Sangiovese, the king grape of the region, or whites like Vermentino. They can also indulge in rosės and sparkling wines.

Most high-quality wines with the Terre di Pisa DOC label are reds with at least 95% Sangiovese grapes. Winemakers rely on these and other indigenous grapes to produce interesting blends with international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

This unique hyper-local terroir is blessed with sandy soil rich in limestone and clay. Millions of years ago, the land was part of the ocean, so seeing whole seashells as you walk among the vineyards is common. Some winemakers even find marine fossils under the soil dating back to this heritage.

The hills and valleys of Terre di Pisa are conducive to viniculture because of the area’s temperate climate, which has warm days, cool nights, moderate rainfall, and ocean breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea year-round. The wines offer minerality and salinity.

Beyond the Leaning Tower: Getting There and Where To Stay

Map of the provinces of Tuscany

Pisa is both the name of this province and its better-known capital city. While wine (along with the tilted tower) takes center stage, Terre di Pisa offers many diverse experiences.

Tourists can meander the two-lane roads traversing the countryside by car and discover this less-traveled province’s cultural, historical, and epicurean riches.

Terre di Pisa wineries are committed to sustainable practices, ensuring the land thrives for future generations. So, it’s not surprising that their farm stays offer a chance to unplug, reconnect with nature, and experience the simple pleasures of rural life.

Instead of large cookie-cutter hotels, many wineries offer rustic Tuscan farm-like accommodations. These small agriturismos can serve as a base for visiting some of the more than 40 wineries in the region or excursions to interesting towns and small villages nearby.

San Miniato, perched on three small hills, is best known for its white truffles, celebrated at a National White Truffle Festival held each November. Pontedera is the birthplace of the iconic Vespa motor scooter and the locale of its historic Piaggio factory and museum. The colorful art city of Peccioli was named the most beautiful village ( borgo) in Italy in 2024.

A few more of the many places worthy of visits include the architecturally stunning landscape of Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, the hometown of tenor Andrea Bocelli; the Roman Theater and Baths in Volterra; and the sandy beaches of Marina di Pisa.

10 Terre di Pisa Wineries That Host Guests

Vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet, and Sangiovese on the Pisan hills of Peccioli produce red, white, and ... [+] rosé wines.

Rural accommodations like those in the province of Pisa are generally restored rather than remodeled to preserve their Tuscan history and ambiance.

Coupled with direct sales from their wine shops, farm stays help provide a reliable income stream when nature compromises crops and creates unique opportunities for guests.

Here is a sampling of some Terre di Pisa wineries that host guests. In addition to finding a sense of place on-site, wine tourists typically visit other wineries and interesting towns nearby.

Badia di Morrona

The 600-acre Badia di Morrona estate, located amidst sloping hills between Terricciola and Casciana Terme, is one of the oldest wineries in Tuscany. It offers tours, tastings of its wines and EVO olive oil (with light lunch), and visits to its historic Benedictine abbey, the summer residence of the Bishops of Volterra in the late 15th century.

Each of six fully-equipped restored farmhouses, divided into villas and apartments, has swimming pools and is surrounded by greenery.

Castelvecchio Socita’Agricola

Located in the town of Terricciola in the Pisan hills, the family-run Castelvecchio Societa’Agricola has 10 hectares of vineyards managed by women. The winery offers cellar visits and tastings paired with local cold cuts, cheeses, bruschetta, and other seasonal products, as well as lunch or dinner of local Tuscan cuisine.

Visitors can arrange stays in either a restored barn or a portion of the original farmhouse restored by the family that offers views of the hills.

Fattoria Varramista

The heart of the 400-acre Fattoria di Varramista in Montopoli is an ancient villa (purchased by the Piaggio-Agnelli family in 1953) once the residence of Enrico Piaggio, famous for the Vespa brand. Varramista offers tours of the villa, the Italian garden, the cellars and vineyards, and tastings of the estate’s wine and EVO olive oil accompanied by Tuscan products.

Three farmhouses on the estate have private pools surrounded by olive groves; another is in the park near the manor. Guests at these residences can also hire mountain bikes, participate in cooking classes, and hire private chefs and/or drivers.

Villa Cosmiana

Sited on a gentle hill in Peccioli, this 17th-century, neoclassical Villa Cosmiana became part of the Antinori family estate in 1783. Abandoned in 1933, its new owners recently meticulously restored it to preserve its rich historical and artistic legacy. An English park with Italianate gardens surrounds the villa, along with 15 vineyards on 11 hectares. Wine tastings begin with a tour of the villa and its winemaking facilities before a light lunch.

The estate has three suites in the villa and four in the Fattoria (farm) that can be booked with a tasting dinner or discovery day.

Villa Saletta

Although wine production on this 1,760-acre working estate can be traced back to 980 AD, Villa Saletta is a modern, boutique winery. Located in a medieval village with ancient farmhouses in Palaia, the family owners lovingly restored a property that had fallen into ruin. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to the winery and cantina, or a guided tour of the magnificent borgo.

Three villas have been renovated using traditional techniques, materials from the region, and modern luxury. The largest can accommodate up to 14 guests.

Pieve de’ Pitti

Located in the hills of Terricola, Pieve de’ Pitti is named after the Florentine Pitti family, which owned the estate until the end of the 17th century. The winery offers tours of the cellar and vineyards, wine tasting, and creative cooking courses.

Guests can stay in one of the five rooms of the Villa (a single large farmhouse surrounded by vineyards) or in one of three self-catering apartments in the Il Poggetto country house. The property also hosts weddings and special occasion parties.

Tenuta di Ghizzano

Tenuta di Ghizzano is an organic and biodynamic farm of 280 hectares, 18 of which are vineyards. The winery is located in the town of Ghizzano, a small frazione of Peccioli with a population of just over 300 people. The estate has vineyards, olive trees, cereal crops, woods, and poplar groves and hosts a range of “experiences,” from tastings to tours to personalized visits.

The two-story Villa Ginevra, a contemporary farmhouse immersed in the countryside, is a beautifully appointed four-bedroom residence filled with art and antiques. It offers a balcony overlooking the scenic hills.

Le Palaie Farm is located on a 150-hectare estate in Peccioli surrounding a 17th-century manor house. In addition to olive groves, arable land has been set aside to preserve the fauna and insects that help repopulate the environment. The winery also hosts special events, including weddings, tastings, and cellar visits.

The recently renovated manor house has seven apartments of different sizes and accommodations in another four independent houses.

Fattoria di Fibbiano

Fattoria Fibbiano is located in Terricola between the hills of Pisa and Volterra. The Cantoni family purchased the farm in 1997. The house's foundation was built in 1707 and is surrounded by vineyards, some over 100 years old. The property is home to three generations of this family. In addition to tastings, tours of the vineyards, picnics, Vespa adventures, and cooking lessons, guests learn about the architectural features of the historic farm. During the harvest, guests can experience olive and grape picking.

Apartments are located in the same building where the family lives. A communal vaulted living room and beautiful pool with panoramic views bring people together for conversation.

Podere la Chiesa

Podere La Chiesa is an ultra-contemporary winery that might be mistaken for an art museum. Located in Terricciola, the winery is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. The one million-year-old soil is rich in limestone, sand, and clay. The winery offers guided tours and tastings. In September, guests can participate in the 50-year-old Grape and Wine Festival held in Terricciola.

The winery is close to the little town of Casanova, which has a small BnB and Michelin-starred restaurant.

Don’t Forget the Leaning Tower

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, along with the Cathedral and ... [+] Baptistery.

Visitors to Terre di Pisa will be treated to an unforgettable experience that blends rolling hills with exceptional wines and warm hospitality.

But a half-day dedicated to the iconic Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli is a must for any visitor.

Getting There

Getting to Terre di Pisa is convenient. International and domestic travelers can arrive through Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport, named after the famous scientist born in Pisa).

Visitors also can arrive at the Pisa Centrale station from Florence via high-speed train in about 45 minutes. Auto rentals are available both at the airport and train station.

Introducing Uber Bubbles in France

With more than 16M visitors expected in France this summer, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of Uber Bubbles – the first ever champagne tour bookable directly in the Uber app. T he latest exclusive experience in our ‘Go Anywhere’ series of travel products, it will be available all summer long, offering riders access to one of Europe’s most premium and iconic regions at the tap of a button.

In partnership with beloved champagne houses Perrier-Jouët and G.H. Mumm, Uber Bubbles puts the heart of France’s champagne region at your fingertips. The full day trip includes a 10:00am pickup in Paris in an Uber Bubbles-branded Tesla, with the first stop along the journey a champagne tasting of three cuvées and lunch at Perrier-Jouët’s Cellier Belle Époque in Épernay. Afterwards, riders will be whisked to Maison G.H. Mumm in Reims for a special cellar visit and a Cordon Rouge tasting before heading back to Paris for dropoff in the early evening.
