Are you getting ready for your Upper Antelope Canyon Tour? The Canyon has its own, rare form of beauty that will leave you awestruck. However, knowing exactly what to expect ahead of time can help you have the most memorable experience possible. Here is what you can get ready to enjoy during your visit when you book your Guided Sightseers Tour with Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours.

Preparing for Your Tour

Prepare for your Upper Antelope tour by packing a camera, water bottle and any other items you may need, including sunscreen, a jacket, and sunglasses. Monopods, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed—bags are also not permitted. Guests must also understand that spreading ashes and littering is forbidden, as these acts are considered desecration of the Canyon, which is a sacred site of the Navajo people. You do not have to pay any money up-front to reserve your tour spot online, so prepare to pay when you arrive. Note that your tour package price will include the required park permit fee. Are you concerned about bringing your kids along for the journey? You will be happy to know that we welcome children of all ages at our tours—they even receive a discounted rate. Keep in mind that very young children will need a car seat for the truck ride to the Canyon, and there are no restrooms on-site.

Check-In and Truck Ride

When you arrive at Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours, you will begin at the staging area to wait in line for check-in. You will need to pay at this time, whether you have made reservations or choose a walk-in tour. Remember to arrive one hour prior to the start time so you can ensure that you reserve your spot. From here, you will ride a 4×4 truck to the mouth of the Upper Canyon to begin your tour.

Your Time Inside the Canyon

Inside the Canyon, your knowledgeable, friendly tour guide—a member of the Navajo Nation—will show you the most stunning and popular sights inside Upper Antelope. If you visit during a summer afternoon, you will be able to experience the beautiful summer light beams. An off-season visit will give you the opportunity to see the beautiful changing light beams on the canyon walls. If you need help capturing the best Antelope Canyon photos possible, your tour guide can help you find the best angles and settings.

The End of The Tour

When your tour is over, you will return to the staging area from the 4×4 truck. Expect the entire round-trip experience to last 90 minutes. If you would like to spend some more time in the Page, Arizona area, consider staying at a local hotel overlooking gorgeous Lake Powell so you can slow down and savor your visit. When you are ready to book your tour, visit our website and get ready for a unique and enriching experience that you will never forget.

Key Takeaways

  • The only way to see Antelope Canyon is with a guided tour.
  • Tours go to the Upper Canyon (which is most poular), Lower Canyon or Canyon X.
  • Most tours depart from Page, Arizona, but you can also book day trips from Las Vegas and Sedona.
  • When booking your tour, keep in mind that Antelope Canyon follows daylight saving time, unlike the rest of Arizona.

Known for its labyrinthine, seemingly undulating sandstone walls and the beams of sunlight that shine into them, Arizona's Antelope Canyon is a magnet for photographers and tourists traveling through the American Southwest.

The famous landmark forms part of Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park in the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. As such, the Navajo Nation requires that visitors are led by authorized guides, who provide tours of the Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon and Canyon X. These tours depart from or close to Page, Arizona, though you can also find Antelope Canyon tours from Sedona and Las Vegas .

Note: Most of Arizona does not follow daylight saving time, though the Navajo Nation, where Antelope Canyon is located, does. Be sure to take this into account when planning your visit.

Upper Antelope Canyon Tours

Lower antelope canyon tours, antelope canyon x tours, antelope canyon tours from las vegas, antelope canyon tours from sedona, upper vs. lower antelope canyon.

Before choosing a tour, you'll need to decide which part of the canyon you'd like to see.

The terrain of the Upper Canyon is more accessible for most tourists and is, therefore, busier. Exploring the Lower Canyon , in contrast, requires visitors to have some degree of endurance, as travelers must climb and descend several staircases. Canyon X is less popular, but equally beautiful.

How to Get to Antelope Canyon

Upper Canyon: Companies that provide tours of the Upper Canyon are all based in or near Page, Arizona (where Antelope Canyon is located), and provide transportation. Drivers coming from the north or south can take Route 89, drivers from the west can take Route 89A, and visitors commuting from the east can take Route 98.

Lower Canyon: Companies serving the Lower Canyon are located within walking distance of the canyon's entrance; therefore, they do not provide transportation to or from Page. Travelers on a Lower Canyon tour will need to drive to the tour operator's location. These companies are about 5 miles east of Page.

Antelope Canyon's narrow, sand-swept walls

A Guide to Visiting Antelope Canyon the 'Right Way'

Antelope Canyon's otherworldly beauty makes it one of the most highly sought after destinations in the world, and access to this natural marvel is granted only with a Navajo guide. Here, we step you through the process of how to visit this astonishing place.

Antelope Canyon is like no other spot on earth. At midday, when the sun is shining, shafts of light cut into the canyon, illuminating the narrow orange and gold sandstone walls. The effect is almost surreal, and photographers from around the globe come to capture its beauty.

However, visiting Antelope Canyon isn't as simple as driving to a parking lot and walking up to the entrance. But we're here to help show you the ropes, from how to book a Navajo guide to tips on photographing the shifting light.

Getting to Antelope Canyon

Created by millions of years of erosion, Antelope Canyon is part of the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park , located 10 minutes east of Page , near the Arizona-Utah border. Although it is one slot canyon, there are two points within the park that you can visit: Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.

Upper Antelope Canyon is at ground level, has less than a 2% incline and is the more popular entrance.

Lower Antelope Canyon requires walking down (and up) several flights of stairs and ladders.

From Phoenix, the drive north to Antelope Canyon is approximately four-and-a-half hours. Once there, your tours may last up to two hours when you figure in parking, the journey there and actual time spent in the canyons. For this reason, many people opt to stay overnight at least one evening (see "Where to stay").

Most tours begin in Page or at the park's entrance off Highway 98. Arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Antelope Canyon is open year-round; however, most people will try to visit mid-day during weekends from March through October, when the light shafts appear. Crowds will be at their peak then, which may make it difficult to snap that perfect shot Find better rates, fewer people and still amazing views during the off-season from November through late February, and especially in January. Though uncommon, Antelope Canyon may close during days of heavy rain or snow. This is more likely to happen from June to September, during Arizona's monsoon season.

What you'll need

You'll also need a prior reservation with an authorized Navajo guide to visit either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon. Book online before you visit since tours can sell out weeks in advance. Additionally, you'll need:

  • A permit, though this is usually covered in your guide's fee (see below).
  • Good walking shoes, especially if visiting Lower Antelope Canyon.
  • See "What to bring" below for more specific items.

What it costs

Until recently, the cost varied significantly depending on whether you booked a sightseeing or photography tour. The tribe has reduced the availability of photography tours, however, because they frequently caused bottlenecks by allowing photographers to bring their tripod and spend more time setting up shots. Most 90-minute tours of Upper Antelope Canyon cost between $50 and $90 (slightly less for children), although some operators offer discounts on their early bird and last chance tours. Hour-long tours of Lower Antelope Canyon cost $40, and up to $80 for deluxe options. The price generally—but not always—includes taxes and the $8 Navajo permit fee. (Check with your tour company if you have any questions about additional fees.)

What to bring

Do: Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes and layered clothing. Apply plenty of sunscreen, even in winter. Bring a hat or handkerchief for protection from the sand, and if you wear contact lenses, consider opting for eyeglasses instead. You are allowed to bring one bottle of water (and we highly recommend you do). Just make sure you take it out with you after the tour. Don't: Bring bags, purses, fanny packs, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, food and drinks—all are prohibited in the canyon.

There are no trash cans and no bathrooms in the canyon.

The trip into the canyon

Whether you start in Page or at the park's entrance, be prepared to ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle through a sandy riverbed to the canyon. Each vehicle has a Navajo guide that ushers the group through, shares information about the formations and even helps stage some photos, including sand cascading over a rock ledge. Sand is everywhere. On windy days, dust can blow into your nose, mouth and ears. If you have a DSLR camera, cover it when you are not using it (a plastic shower cap does the trick) and never change lenses inside the canyon.

A Guide to Visiting Antelope Canyon the 'Right Way'

Photography tips

It's more challenging to photograph Antelope Canyon without a tripod, but you can still take amazing images. With a DSLR, opt for a high ISO setting and use a wide aperture. To photograph the beams of light, book a tour that will be in the canyon between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., May through October. Don't forget to look up, especially when the canyon is crowded. Several tour operators, such as Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon Tours , also offer tours of nearby, nearly-as-spectacular canyons. Avid photographers may want to consider booking one of these tours, too. Simply inquire when booking.

Where to stay

Though hardly remote by some Arizona standards, Antelope Canyon is still considered a lengthy drive and hike for many areas of the state. Additionally, there are quite a few other amazing sites to see nearby— Horseshoe Bend , White Pocket and the Vermilion Cliffs , and Lake Powell —that many people choose to stay at least one night to get the most from their trip. Hampton Inn and Suites Page - Lake Powell This national chain is among the area's newer properties and ranks high among past guests for its clean, comfortable rooms, friendly staff and free hot breakfast. The large parking lot is able to accommodate boats, buses and RVs. The Bear's Den B&B Owners "Bubba and Deb-B" operate this cozy three-room bed and breakfast in Page that's fully ADA-compliant. Amenities include pillowtop mattresses, a small fridge and microwave, private bathrooms, and plenty of bear decor. Shash Dine' Eco-Retreat For a truly unique stay, book a Najavo hogan or sheepherder wagon at this sustainable glamping campsite and B&B operated by Baya, a member of the Navajo Nation. You will stay on Navajo land in one of eight simple accommodations—no electricity or running water, but fresh drinking water—with nothing but views for miles. Lake Powell Resort If a visit to Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is on your list, you can't get closer than a stay at this resort located at Wahweap Marina in Page. Hotel guests can book a boat tour, dinner cruise or rent their own powerboat for an unforgettable day on the water.

Nearby slot canyons

Antelope Canyon tours sometimes sell out, especially during high season. If tours aren’t available when you want to go, consider booking a tour of one of these slot canyons near Page.

Canyon X: Named for the point where its walls create an “X” overhead, this canyon sees far fewer visitors than Antelope Canyon but is equally breathtaking. Book a tour with the property’s owners, Taadidiin Tours .

Cardiac Canyon: Taadidiin Tours also offers private treks through Cardiac Canyon. While it requires some scrambling to see the 2.5-mile canyon’s sights, adventurers are rewarded with solitude unavailable in Antelope Canyon.

Mountain Sheep Canyon: Several companies, such as Black Streak Canyon Tours , guide groups through this off-the-beaten-path canyon with its undulating sandstone walls. Be prepared for a hike to its entrance.

Rattlesnake and Owl Canyons: Often toured together, these canyons provide dramatically different experiences. While Rattlesnake twists and turns, Owl has open areas. Book tours through companies like Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours and Shun’Diin Canyon Tours.

Leave no trace

Antelope Canyon and the Navajo Nation lands are special places whose breathtaking beauty and natural habitats for local wildlife are worth preserving. Adhere to the Leave No Trace principles as much as you possibly can so future visitors may continue to enjoy.

  • No Bags on tour: No backpacks, no purses, no fanny-packs (waist bags) – UNLESS they are CLEAR, transparent bags with all items visible – You cannot put an opaque bag inside a clear bag… No weapons of any kind, no drugs, and no alcohol – do not bring the ashes of your past loved ones.
  • Dusty conditions: We advise you to dress your camera in a rain jacket (not for actual rain) to avoid the falling sand that is thrown in the canyon. Changing your lens in the canyon is at your own risk – we are not responsible for damaged cameras.
  • Weather: Please check out the expected weather at least 2 or 3 days before arrival, and be prepared for weather that can be either cold or hot. Come with layers. Bring plenty of water – small hydration packs are best.
  • There are No Restrooms: On tour, we do have a restroom in our office, but for nearly 2 hours you will not have access to a bathroom.
  • Children: We do not have age restrictions, we have children of all ages go on tour every day. When booking, if you are unable to add a child between 0-7 years old it is because we have reached the carrying capacity for children in car seats. Our truck design limits the number of children requiring car seats, we cannot accommodate all families needing space for car seats. Note: we DO NOT supply car seats, you must bring your own
  • Strict Passenger Limits: Please book the exact number of persons joining the tour, including children of all ages, yes, even babies have to have a ticket. If you arrive in our office needing seats for more people, we will not be able to squeeze them on tour. Be sure to book far in advance, as we do sell out. With Daily passenger limits, we cannot add more seats to a tour that does not have enough seats. Remember, babies need a confirmed ticket, we do not allow lap children, everyone counts toward the passenger limit.
  • NEW HIKE INVOLVED , we now have a one-way path on tour, if you’ve been on tour before the walk is no longer easy. EVERYONE joining the tour has to be able to complete the hike (there are no exceptions). To get a better idea of the hike involved, scroll down to the bottom of this page and watch our video. If you’ve had recent surgery on your knees, hips, or back you may want to reconsider this tour – the hike up and over has an elevation change of 200 ft with an incline of 20 degrees going uphill – there are stairs involved, which leads us to say this tour is not wheelchair accessible – this hike up and over must be completed in less than 15 minutes . In total, the walk from start to finish is under a mile. Random Fact: Our average elevation is 4000 feet above sea level.
  • Photographic Tours for professional photographers are no longer available, by order of the Navajo Nation 2019 was the last of the photographic tours to Upper Antelope Canyon. Nor are we able to accommodate photo shoots inside the canyon, commercial use photography/productions are simply not allowed right now, it’s unknown if we will ever be able to conduct such tours. Plenty of great photos can be taken on the Sightseer’s Tour, keep in mind it’s all hand-held photography now, tripods and monopods are not allowed on tour anymore.

One of the most stunning natural wonders in the United States , Antelope Canyon is a favorite among photographers, tourists, and visitors from all over the world. A popular slot canyon on the Navajo Reservation, it is unearthly in its beauty, created over many thousands of years by wind and water which carved the sandstone into the temple we see today.

Tourists make the trek for the natural light show, which is something of a photographers dream. “The views in Lower Antelope Canyon change constantly as the sun moves across the sky, filtering lights softly across the stone walls. These ever-moving sun angles bounce light back and forth across the narrow canyon’s walls, creating a dazzling display of color, light, and shadow.”

Antelope Canyon is a place where you can experience nature in its raw form, though those interested in visiting should note that the area is only open by joining a tour.

Things You Need to Know Before You Go On Antelope Canyon Tours

Where to stay, know what you want.

Antelope Canyon is divided into Lower Antelope and Upper Antelope. When selecting an Antelope Canyon tour package , you should know which one you want to visit, and think about which one is right for you.

Lower Antelope has fewer tourists and is cheaper to visit, though is much longer and canyon spaces make some people feel uncomfortable. Note that you’ll be climbing stairs and ladders too. Upper Antelope is more popular because it has wider walkways, though this means it is more expensive and sees a lot more tourists.

So, if you’re adventurous and want a challenging trip you can choose Lower Antelope. If you prefer comfort you may want to stick to Upper Antelope.

Take Your Camera Along

The light effects in  Antelope Canyon offer some stunning photo opportunities, so make sure you’ve traveled with your camera. Landscape photographers will be in their element!

The light beams that penetrate through the gaps in the rocks do only last for a short time, so make sure you have a camera which is easy to whip out. A point and shoot or an easy to reach DSLR are ideal – you’ll miss the shot if you’re trying to change lenses. Also, remember that any heavy camera equipment you take, you have to hike with.

Lighting conditions are best around mid-morning between April and September, but the other months bring smaller crowds and a more intimate experience where you won’t struggle with as many tourists in your shots.

The light effects in Antelope Canyon offer some stunning photo opportunities, so make sure you’ve traveled with your camera.

Carry Your Water

As with any day spent in the outdoors, it’s highly recommended that you carry your own water bottle. While the canyon below is cooler than the hot desert air above, you will still need water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

There are no shops around so you will need to bring water with you.

You Can’t Take a Backpack

Keep in mind that you can’t take a backpack into Antelope Canyon, so whatever you take in you’ll have to carry.

Backpacks cause problems because the Lower Antelope has tight spaces and it can be inconvenient for you to move through, and damaging for the environment.

Carry limited items like a water bottle and some headgear that will protect you from the sun and sand.

Antelope Canyon is a place where you can experience nature in its raw form, though those interested in visiting should note that the area is only open by joining a tour.

Eat Before You Head for the Tour

It’s important to eat and use the bathroom before you begin your tour. Likewise with our tip for carrying water – there are no shops once you’re inside the canyon, so you won’t be able to purchase food.  Eating healthy will ensure that you stay fit during the entire tour and maintain your energy levels throughout the day.

There aren’t any bathroom facilities either, so go before you leave to avoid an embarrassing situation during the tour!

I have heard of the antelop canyon, but never got a chance to visit it. It looks so amazing and out of the world. It looks like a fairy tale came true. Thanks for the tips especially about the lower and upper anteops. I would surely keep that in mind if I ever get a chance to see this place. Wonderful photos!

Thanks Meg for introducing me to this wonderful phenomenon of nature.I was not really aware of this place. Looks stunning, I would prefer to head to the Lower Antelope as it sounds more adventurous and also has less tourists. Lovely post and very informative.

You’re welcome Vyjay! Lower Antelope is definitely the area to prioritize if you’re looking for something more adventurous and with less crowds. Hope you have the chance to plan a visit soon :)

I think I’d prefer lower antelope with less crowds so that no one rushes me while I’m photographing. Gorgeous photos. Looks magical.

Absolutely – I prefer less crowds when trying to take my photographs too :) Can’t stand it when you’re elbow to elbow trying to take a shot!

How long does it take to hike in the upper canyon?

Hi Linda, the tours usually go for an hour and 20 minutes. You have one hour directly in the canyon, but there is 10-15 minute walk to the canyon Entrance (the company you choose will drive you to the entrance), then less than 5 minute walk back to the parking lot.

There are sometimes options for a more slow-paced photography tour which can last up to two hours if you want more time in the Canyon itself. Hope that helps!

' src=

Which is more spectacular ? Upper or Lower Canyon…. especially for photography ? How strenuous is the Lower Canyon ? And what are the approximate fees for the tours ? Also is it possible to pay for and do both tours at once ? What kind of crowds are to be expected in September and October ? What is the best time of day for photography during those months ? When you mention ” headgear” to protect from sun and sand are you just speaking about a cap ? or what ? Also is it 1 hour and 20 minutes PER tour or total for Upper and Lower ?

Hi Tina, both canyons are spectacular, but the lower canyon has slightly less crowds, so the overall experience is nicer and you can get photos without people in them from time to time.

That said the upper canyon is famous for it’s iconic light beams, which you don’t have in the lower canyon (very rarely anyway). Guides often also throw dust up into the lightbeams in the upper canyon for photographs where-as they’re not usually keen to do this in the lower. So if you’re going with the purpose to photograph the lightbeams, you should go to the upper canyon.

Rough cost for lower canyon will be around $34. Upper canyon tours are more expensive, you might pay around $70 (that’s including the Navajo park fee you have to pay, but if you’re doing both in the same day you just pay the entrance fee once).

It’s usually an extra $10 if you want to go at prime times when the light beams are at their strongest. You can easily do both on the same day, though I’m not aware of a company who offers both tours at once. You would probably need to book them separately.

The standard tour in Lower Antelope lasts for one hour and the photography tour lasts for over two hours (so yes, an hour and a half roughly for each canyon). Re the difficulty of the Lower Canyon, the stairs aren’t a big deal if you’re a mobile person. They’re not treacherous, but if you have mobility issues it might become an issue.

It’s very crowded until September, but crowds usually start thinning out around that time. It’s at it’s peak in June, July and August. Midday tours are usually jammed. You can take great photos at any time of the day, but if you want the beams of light, you need to go in when the sun is at it’s highest, which is late morning – midday, when you’ll experience crazy crowds. So it’s a choice between the beams vs the crowds.

Avoid weekends if you can which helps lessen the crowds a bit. Yes, by headgear I just mean a cap :)

I hope that answered everything but let me know if you have further questions, or if there’s anything I missed :)

Visited the lower Canyon. It was beautiful!

So glad you enjoyed your trip Penelope! It really is a stunning place :)

I have just visited Antelope and Rattlesnake Canyon, the comment re tripods in this article is incorrect. On the standard tour you are not allowed to take a tripod or a selfie stick or even a back pack, the crowds during the peak times are bad, on 26th May 2018 they had 1200 people pass through Antelope Canyon, on this standard tour you will be pushed through, it is very dark so unless you shoot with a high ISO or in RAW you will not get great shots due to light and crowds, this tour is about 1 hour in the canyon and you go one way and can not move away from your guide. I took the Photo Tour about $180 USA for the 2 Canyon tours, well worth it, we spent about 2 hours in Antelope Canyon with a personal guide Gib, he was great, you must have a tripod and a SLR Camera, no bags, before you are allowed on the tour, the guide will hold back the crowds for at least 2 minutes for each photo shoot, we had about 30 diff shoots, Gib moved us around the canyon to ensure we got ready for all the light beams and then used sand for the light beams. As an amateur photographer and with Gib’s help a got loads of great photos.

Glad you enjoyed your time Terry, and thanks for the updated info on the tripods and selfie sticks being banned – I will remove the mention of a tripod from the post :)

It sounds like the photo tour is definitely the way to go, and really incredible that they actually hold back the crowd for you and offer some mentorship. Glad you got some awesome shots!

Thanks for sharing your experience :)

' src=

FYI you cannot carry backpacks into the canyon

Thanks for the updated info Jean :)

' src=

An i bring small pouch at upper antelope canyon?

Hi Marites, as long as it’s not a backpack you should be fine with a bumbag type deal, but as the rules around what you can take are often changing the best way to get a 100% answer is to shoot the tour company an email or give them a quick call before the day :)

Have an amazing time in the canyon!

' src=

I guess this might be a dumb question, but you mention no bathroom facilities in the canyons. We are contemplating signing up for an 8 hour photo tour with 4 canyons. Are there any opportunities for facilities between canyons? I see many suggestions to bring water and snacks, no one mentions 8 hours without using the bathroom, am I interpreting the situation correctly?

Hi Anthony, there’s usually a bathroom at the start of your tour before you leave (basic outhouse type of set up), but whether your specific tour comes back via facilities or keeps going through the canyons is something I would shoot them an email and ask about.

That said the bathroom at the start is 1 bathroom for men, and 1 for women, with around 150 people vyying to use it, so I would definitely recommend going before hand and trying to avoid having to use it at all if you can :)

Hope you have an amazing trip!

' src=

it states if you are from sea level it could be difficult to do the lower canyon. We are from Florida and are in fair shape but not super healthy for 50 plus years of age. It looks slow-paced how strenuous is this hike?

Hi Kathy, I would say it’s moderate. If you don’t hike regularly might find it fairly challenging – there are reasonably steep stairs throughout the walk (best done backwards like a ladder) and then some climbing involved, as well as walking over uneven rock surfaces.

If you’re fit you shouldn’t have any problems; if you find you have difficulty with stairs I would expect it to be strenuous.

Hope that helps! It’s beautiful though so well worth it :)

' src=

I just have a question about the canyons being claustrophobic. I kind of have some issues and would hate to be stuck in there being anxious. Can you get out easily if the issue arises?

Hi Deidre, it can feel quite claustrophobic when it’s crowded, but there are areas you can retreat to which are like small rooms, and very open and airy, so if you’re feeling claustrophobic you can move into these relatively open areas.

It’s not dark at all and you’ll always be able to see the sky, which I’ve found usually helps ease this anxiety, and if you head to Lower Antelope there are typically less people. Lower just has tight spots, sort of like gong through a very small door, but it always opens up again right after.

Hope that helps, and that you have an amazing trip :)

antelope canyon tour restroom

Need more restrooms!

I’d give it a 5 except the restrooms are inadequate (1 toilet for men and 1 for women) with about 150 people around between those coming back from their tour and those waiting to leave. Lines long! Our tour was for 10:30 with boarding at 10:20. I ran out of the restroom at 10:23 and the truck with my family on had already left. They even told the driver there was still 1 more but they took off anyway. Not a good way to start things off.

I have wanted to see this for a very long time! I knew going into it that it was not going to be a serene, intimate, quiet, reflective experience, even though that's what I would prefer. So going into it knowing what to expect will help you to not be disappointed and to just be grateful to experience it. On our way into Page, my friend saw one of the tour vehicles heading back to town and got very excited that we were going to get to ride it in it! Me...not so much! It looked a little scary. We parked at the tour building, a former gas station, and went inside to check in and use the restroom. It's a one-seater, so there's a line! Then we waited outside. A Navajo gentleman welcomed us and performed a native song. I'm not sure what he normally would wear, but being Halloween he had a Mario costume on! We all got into the vehicles for the trip. You can see by my photo what it looks like. There are seat belts that are for two/three people each, but our guide actually told us they are just to keep you from standing up. In other words, they don't really provide any extra safety in this type of vehicle, which is kind of obvious. They warn that pregnant women or those with back issues not ride in these vehicles also. Once we were loaded up, we headed off! Not going to lie...I was terrified! Kidding...sort of. It was scary zooming along the highway sitting sideways as the wind blew and traffic whizzed by! My friend had a great time and a good laugh about it. Then we hit the sand. And bumpy bumpy bumpy! I have to admit that part was pretty fun. It's windy and sandy though, so be prepared! As you've read, there were several groups of people there at the same time, but it was very organized. One group walked in and kept to the right as other groups exited on the left. The guides stopped at specific places where you could take some of the iconic shots of the canyon. Of course, you could take as many photos as you wanted wherever you wanted, but you had to keep up with the group. The guide was happy to take your photo as well if you wanted. On the way back out, we were not allowed to stop and take pics, so be sure to take them all on the way through the first time. We returned to town the same way we came. One tour vehicle actually became stuck in the sand, and we stopped to try to help but couldn't. They were going to have to wait for help to arrive. So be sure you have water with you and a hat and sunscreen...normal desert stuff...just in case! It was a really fun experience, and even though I'm not a professional photographer and the sunlight wasn't "perfect" like those famous shots you see, it was well worth seeing!

I don’t know how to explain this incredible natural beauty. In order to see this wonder, you need to have a tour by a Navajo Indian. Our tour guide was Mariza. Not only did she tell us how to set our camera setting to take the best pictures but she also took some for us. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful considering she sees so many tourist a day. I’ve never seen anything like this Canyon and highly recommend you take this tour, you won’t be sorry. We did go early November and there wasn’t a large number of tourist. We heard that during the tourist season they can see up to 500 people in this 1/4 mile cave.

Pros Amazing spot with once in a lifetime visuals Guide helped take some amazing photos Must see if in this part of world Cons It’s a mob scene with 15 trucks of 10 or more each dumping people there. Forget taking in the serenity of it all and look forward to elbows in your side, other peoples cameras in your face and repeated instructions to “move along” In fairness most people didn’t seem to mind - I did. Here’s an idea - have a time slot where they charge double and only allow half the people in there so you don’t feel like cattle All in all is it worth doing - yes - but it’s about as serene as waiting in line at disney

WhIle registering for the trip we learned that backpacks are not allowed in the tour so we left our bags in the car. The trip from the ticket area to the canyon via their truck is very windy so hang on to your hats or they will fly off. When we went to the Slot Canyon, we were so amaze at how beautiful it is. There were 14 people in the group, 3 couples and 8 of me and my friends. The guide would take the pictures of the couples while we take at least 2 pics for the eight of us. It was fine that she doesnt take our picture but i have a problem when she tells us to hurry while she ignored one of my friend who asked her to take a picture for her. For the record, our group were the only ones who gave her a very good tip inspite of her treatment towards us because we were all celebrating our 50th birthday and we wanted to bless her. Overall, the tour was very disappointing. Other than the horrible guide, it is too crowded. They should space it longer so we can move see and take pictures the slot is narrow ( thats why they dont allow big bags in to avoid hitting the canyon.) it is beautiful but its hard to fully appreciate it when you are hurried because theres a lot of people behind you.

If you go ask for Leonard Nez. What a great guide, super helpful with cameras/pictures, goes the extra mile with his flute playing and Navaho history. Didn't see the other guides put forth that effort. Beautiful place, friendly people.
