Cancellations

Riders may cancel for a full refund at any time up to 72 hours prior to scheduled departure. You may cancel by sending us an email or by calling us at (888) REV-0123.

If we cancel for dangerous weather conditions (see below), riders will receive a full refund as well.

There's an old saying that there's no such thing as bad weather, only insufficient preparation.  Rainy days are a fact of life everywhere and the Jersey Shore is no different - one just needs to be prepared.

We run rain or shine, unless dangerous weather conditions are occurring or imminent, based on the judgment of tour guides at the time of the trip.  Whenever possible, we try to wait out any questionable weather (which does not mean rain!)

Revolution Rail Woodstown NJ Celebrates First Successful Season! Weekend Spots Open Thru Labor Day

The Revolution Rail rail-biking folks have had a great first season so far in Woodstown NJ! Just 4 weekends left before they shut down the location until next spring!

Reservations are required and can be made online !

Yes you will pedal a lightweight rail car over train tracks, and see parts of Salem and Gloucester County that you wouldn’t ever see from a car!

If you can’t make it to Woodstown in the next few weekends they also have a VERY successful location in Cape May which runs all Fall through the end of December. Cape May also runs during the week due to vacationer demand.

Keep reading and scrolling to learn more. I even have a very short video in this post.

But What? You didn’t know that an awesome rail biking experience was just 30 minutes away from the Deptford Mall, and that they are coming back next year?!

Yes it’s true.. and my apologies for not being on top of this one, especially after my Cape May post (and video) last year was probably one of my most popular articles!

To be very clear I am writing this story later in the summer only because I recently learned of it. Woodstown has been very popular and if you want to ride there this year, you need to go book right now before 42Freeway fans fills up all of the remaining slots!

Keep scrolling and reading to learn about Revolution Rail, the pedal experience, and the specifics of the Woodstown location!

Revolution Rail – What’ it All About?

Revolution Rail started in 2016 in North Creek NY by two longtime friends Robert Harte and Michael Dupee.

Robert came up with the initial idea and brought in Mike to form the team. They needed an agreement to use the rails at the first location, they needed a business entity, they needed advertising… and they needed the rail-bike cars.

Well the friends designed and built the rail cars themselves, starting with 6 of them for their first New York State runs!

rail bike tours new jersey

They try to make it more than just a rail-bike ride by incorporating a unique educational experience for their guests.

Today they have 5 different locations in three States (New York, Colorado, New Jersey) and over 100,000 people have ridden with Revolution Rail!

Woodstown Revolution Rail – Intro

So a very unique aspect of the Woodstown run is it starts a few blocks from the recently opened Farmers and Bankers brewery!

The Woodstown experience starts in the area where in 1912 President Taft spoke to residents! Then its off past the old rail freight house, and you even pedal over Oldmans Creek!

rail bike tours new jersey

And if you want to take you Revolution Rail Woodstown experience to another level, they offer a special event “Brew to Brew” extended length run which incorporates stops at both Farmers & Bankers AND Swedesboro Brewing! (You must book the Brew-to-Brew specifically)

For the Brew to Brew special run there is just one run left on the schedule, September 3rd.

Regardless of your location, you need to make reservations in advance!

The Woodstown version of Revolution Rail is approximately 6 miles long and takes about 2 hours.

The cars are very easy to pedal and meant to travel at a leisurely pace. The course is mostly flat but there is a slight incline at one point.

During my visit last weekend at Woodstown I just happened to catch one of the founders, Robert who made a trip down to check out how things were going at his newest location.

Woodstown Revolution Rail – Details

The Woodstown rail-biking trip begins at Wilson Ave where it meets East Ave (Route 40). This is one block from Woodstown High School and across from the old rail freight house.

Google Maps lists the location as “Woodstown Central with Revolution Rail Company”. If that isn’t a match try “The Hailey Jane Dance Center”

The starting area is the edge of a suburban neighborhood where the train tracks dissect through, with Wilson Ave and West Wilson Ave on either side of the tracks.

Cars park on the east side of the tracks… well you’ll see the Revolution Rail folks set up when you arrive!

The rail-bike cars will be set on the tracks up waiting, and a table is there for guests to be checked in.

It’s important to note that the time on the reservation is when they expect to roll-out, so you are asked to be there at 20 minutes before.

rail bike tours new jersey

There are also some restrictions around size. For example the weight is capped at 300 lbs. Check the website for more details (We share the key ones below)

As you start, you’ll immediately cross over Route 40 and ride past the original rail freight house from the late 1800s and is the site where in 1912 President Taft spoke to a crowd of locals from his uniquely designed campaign train.

As you pedal out of Woodstown you will see a water tower that was built in 1879.

In Pilesgrove you’ll ride through farm fields and then over the Oldmans Creek bridge ending the first half of the trip in Gloucester County, where the rail-bikes are turned around and you head back.

New Jersey's Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail | Photo by Chuck Whitmore

Escaping the interstate and exploring the backroads of New Jersey, it’s easy to see why it’s called the Garden State. And that’s just one reason why locals and visitors alike flock to the state’s 54 rail-trails—to get their fill of fresh air and gorgeous nature. Here are some of the best rail-trails in the state.

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail

New Jersey's Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail | Photo by Chuck Whitmore

Counties: Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset

The longest completed multiuse trail in the state, the 72-mile  Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail  follows the towpath of the canal, which was built in the early 1830s as a transportation corridor between Philadelphia and New York. Today it serves as an integral part of the 800-mile  Circuit Trails network  and the 3,000-mile  East Coast Greenway  connecting Maine to Florida. Trail users can expect to see 19th-century bridges, remnants of locks, cobblestone spillways, and at least one abandoned train car (marked by graffiti). Picnic tables and towns with trailside cafés can be found along the way.

Henry Hudson Trail

New Jersey's Henry Hudson Trail | Photo by TrailLink user aji8ful

County: Monmouth

Visitors can explore some of the best New Jersey has to offer on the  Henry Hudson Trail . Each year, thousands of trail users walk or pedal through forests and past picturesque meadows and Sandy Hook Bay. While the 22-mile trail is gorgeous year-round, it’s absolutely spectacular in the fall when the surrounding tree canopy explodes into autumn colors.

Cooper River Trail

New Jersey's Cooper River Trail | Photo by Laura Pedrick:AP Images

County: Camden

A 4-mile loop circling its namesake park and extending into a nearby residential area, the paved  Cooper River Trail  offers a pleasant, family-friendly escape for Camden County residents. Filled with mature trees and both wetland and grassland areas, the park abounds with butterflies and birds, including bald eagles, raptors, and, in the spring and summer, egrets and herons. The Cooper River Trail also connects to much larger trail networks, including the  Camden Greenway  (which will eventually provide access to Philadelphia) and the 800-mile  Circuit Trails network .

Traction Line Recreation Trail

New Jersey's Traction Line Recreation Trail | Photo by Torsha Bhattacharya

County: Morris

Whether you’re aboard a  New Jersey Transit  commuter train or engaging in a human-powered pursuit, the  Traction Line Recreation Trail  is a rail-with-trail that keeps you moving. The line was originally created for trolleys hauling passengers between Newark and Dover in the early part of the 20th century. The trail portion runs 3 miles from  Morristown National Historical Park  to  Drew University  in Madison. Elevate your heart rate a bit more by either trying out the 10 workout stations along the route or, if you’re a wildlife lover, spotting any of the abundant animal life just off trail.

Pleasantville to Somers Point Bike Path

New Jersey's Pleasantville to Somers Point Bike Path | Photo by TrailLink user clydezilla

County: Atlantic

Built on the former Atlantic City and Shore Railroad line, the  Pleasantville to Somers Point Bike Path  connects those two cities with Northfield and Linwood, creating an important and beloved transportation corridor. The 8-mile rail-trail winds its way through the city centers and parks, with a few wooded sections to provide both shade and scenery; trail users are never far from a bathroom or lunch spot. Visitors can connect to the  Route 52 Bridge Trail  that links to nearby Cape May County.

Columbia Trail

New Jersey's Columbia Trail | Photo by Anthony Le

Counties: Hunterdon, Morris

One of the most popular trails in the state, the  Columbia Trail  traverses 15 miles of the absolute best natural beauty that New Jersey has to offer. As  Rails to Trails’  Laura Stark wrote, “… the Columbia Trail delves into the steep-sided gorge, picturesque with moss and rhododendrons tumbling over the rocks. After a heavy rainfall, crystalline waterfalls cascade down its sides. The South Branch of the Raritan River is close at hand and well-stocked with trout; you’re likely to see fly fisherman wading into its cool, clear waters, and the graceful arc of their fishing lines.” Seemingly endless birch and aspen trees envelope the crushed-gravel trail as it leads into the  Ken Lockwood Gorge Wildlife Management Area , where trail users can often see deer, coyotes and foxes, as well as herons and woodpeckers. This is a trail that rewards repeat visits.

TRAIL OF THE MONTH: Columbia Trail (October 2014)

Paulinskill valley trail.

New Jersey's Paulinskill Valley Trail | Photo by TrailLink user realhoff

Counties: Sussex, Warren

In the mood for adventure? The New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway laid tracks between Kittatinny Mountain and the New Jersey Highlands in the late 1800s, following the Paulinskill Valley’s namesake creek. Abandoned by the railroad in the 1960s, the 27-mile  Paulinskill Valley Trail  passes forgotten icehouses and depots that have been taken back by nature. The Paulinskill Viaduct, also known as the Hainesburg Trestle, may be the trail’s highlight, soaring 115 feet above ground. (At one time, it was the world’s largest reinforced concrete structure.) Keep an eye out in the woods to possibly glimpse bears, bobcats, mink or deer. The Paulinskill Valley Trail is part of the 1,300-mile  September 11th National Memorial Trai l  connecting the 9/11, Flight 93 and Pentagon Memorials.

Middle Township Bike Path

New Jersey's Middle Township Bike Path | Photo by TrailLink user rcpat

County: Cape May

Following a former rail line catering to Jersey Shore tourists, the 9-mile  Middle Township Bike Path  now appeals to a different generation of visitors. Campgrounds and wineries surround the southern end of the trail, which leads up to the  Cape May County Park and its zoo , as well as  Atlantic Cape Community College . The trail connects to the  Cold Spring Bike Path  and is an integral cog of the  Cape May County Trail Network .

Sussex Branch Trail

New Jersey's Sussex Branch Trail | Photo by Eli Griffen

County: Sussex

At one time, the narrow-gauge, mule-drawn Sussex Mine Railroad hauled iron ore from the mines to the Morris Canal. Rolling through forest and farmland and past several lakes, and intersecting both the  Great Valley  and Paulinskill trails, the  Sussex Branch Trail  feels like a real-life choose-your-own-adventure book today. The 20-mile trail also passes through  Kittatinny Valley State Park , which makes a great basecamp for out-of-town visitors. The route has a few on-road detours, but visitors will be back on the trail before they know it.

Saddle River County Park Bike Path

New Jersey's Saddle River Greenway | Photo by Kevin Belanger

County: Bergen

Trails don’t get much more family friendly than the  Saddle River County Park Bike Path . Winding through multiple residential areas and neighborhoods, the 7.6-mile trail is frequently used by parents walking their kids to school. At no point do they need to cross a busy road; instead, the trail uses over- and underpasses to avoid traffic. Along the way, they enjoy a bit of a nature break among the trees and suburban wildlife.

Railbike excursions

a man and woman on a railbike on tracks

What’s the fuss about?

This concept has existed roughly since the 1850s, when maintenance workers on railroads used handcars and railbikes to get from point A to point B.  Something had to be used to carry the crew and materials for track inspections and/or repairs. In 1877, a Michigan farmer named George Sheffield was accredited for inventing the first three-wheeled railroad velocipede — a handcar that used a combination of hand and foot power to propel forward (“push-pull fashion”).

With many variations of this today, railbikes are primarily used for pleasure. The construction of each railbike may differ — some are 2-seaters, others 4 — and can come with electric assist. Essentially, the railbike may offer you a different perspective of the railroad — in essence you become the train. You chug along at a speed that is comfortable for you, while taking in the beautiful scenery along your chosen destination. It’s a great opportunity to relax, try something different, and take some spectacular photos.

Reserving your spot

With several groups of people out on a railroad at any given time, it’s not meant to be a race. The idea is to enjoy your time out on the tracks. Tailgating is not preferred. Each operation will have its own set of rules that you must follow. So don’t just plan on showing up the day of without a reservation and in flip flops — it’s not going to happen.

It’s like riding a bike

These “hands free,” people-powered rail vehicles are gaining momentum all over the United States on a variety of railroads, so here’s a guide to help you find one near you.

TOP PLACES FOR RAIL RIDERS—PEDAL SCENIC RAIL TRAILS IN MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, COLORADO, AND MORE

March 26, 2024 | 5 min read.

Erin Gifford

While it may seem like rail biking is just gaining steam (pun intended), rail carts have been around since at least the mid-1800s. They were once used by railroad workers for track maintenance. The primary difference, however, is that yesterday’s rail carts required standing up and using a push-down, pull-up handle.

Rail biking is a low-impact exercise for children and adults, as well as those of varying fitness levels. With rail biking, you don’t need to worry about balancing or steering. All you do is pedal, so your hands are free to take photos of the scenery as you roll along the rail trail.

Rail bike rides can be any distance, but the average route is between 3 – 10 miles. Some rail trails are longer—up to 25 miles—and may even tack on extra activities, like paddling or pumpkin picking. Most rail bike adventures set off by day, but a few begin at night, so you can savor a full moon or a sky alight with stars.

1. TRACKS AND YAKS (FROSTBURG & BERLIN, MD)

In 2021, Maryland’s Tracks and Yaks was the first to offer rail bike tours, and today they sell out more than a half dozen excursions that run from 6 – 15 miles with departures from Frostburg and Berlin. In Frostburg, the tracks parallel the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile rail trail that connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD, offering scenic views across the Allegheny Mountains. Several rail bike tours tack on kayaking on the Potomac River. In Berlin, rail riders enjoy pedaling across farmland and forest.

3. PENNSYLVANIA RAIL BIKE (HAWLEY, PA)

4. RAIL EXPLORERS USA (VARIOUS LOCATIONS)

Rail Explorers USA offers tours on 2- and 4-person pedal-assist rail bikes in six locations, including Milford, NY, and Versailles, KY. Tours range from 4 – 12 miles, and of course, the scenery depends on the location. In Kentucky, a 10-mile tour boasts views of thoroughbred horse farms, while the 6-mile Rhode Island tour wows rail riders with stunning views across Narragansett Bay.

5. RAIL BIKE ADVENTURES (LACONIA, NH)

In New Hampshire, Rail Bike Adventures books 5-mile rail bike tours on a rail trail that dates to 1848 and boasts views across Lake Winnisquam as rail riders pedal between Laconia and Belmont. The company offers daytime rail bike tours, as well as sunset pedals in summer on custom-made rail bikes made for two or four riders.

Rail bike tours are the soft adventure trend for anyone who loves the nostalgia of train travel

Riding the rails isn't just for wayward vagabonds. these rail bike tours are an exciting way to see the world..

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

“Do you even rail bike, bro?” You’ll probably be asked this question dozens of times this summer by anyone from your most extreme adrenalin-addicted friends to your grandmother’s sweet old knitting buddies. That’s because the newest bucket-list adventure activity on Earth is beloved by adventure seekers of all ages.

Rail Explorers USA

Flekkefjordbanen, revolution rail co., pudding creek railbikes.

Put simply, rail bike tours involve riding pedal-powered (and sometimes even electric) machines along abandoned or disused railroad tracks that no longer carry train traffic. Rail bike tours are relatively new over the last few years, and they’re expanding all over the world, making use of defunct rail lines that traverse scenic natural areas . Here’s a closer look at the best rail bike tour operators and where to find them.

Multiple U.S. Locations

Rail Explorers rail bikes lined up on a train track with the sunrise in the background.

This company provides rail bike tours in four U.S. locations, including the Catskill Mountains , Rhode Island, and Boone, Iowa. With scenic views throughout the relaxed excursion, these trips are perfect for those looking to get off the beaten path and check out each region in a new and exciting way.

  • Why you should visit the Everglades (and our top tips for a memorable adventure)

The eight-mile roundtrip Catskills tour travels for about 2.5 hours along the historic Ulster and Delaware Railroads, alongside Esopus Creek through the woods. Bring a snack and a drink for lunch at the creekside turnaround.

The Rhode Island trip offers a variety of regular and themed tours, including the most popular: “The Northern Ramble” and “The Southern Circuit.” The Ramble takes guests on a six-mile jaunt from Portsmouth to the Sakonnet River. It’s a one-way trip with a return via shuttle bus — perfect for anyone looking for a more leisurely rail ride. The Circuit trip is six miles roundtrip and allows guests to eat lunch at a private waterfront picnic area.

At every location, Rail Explorers USA offers two types of “Explorer” vehicles: a tandem for two people or a quad for up to four people. Both are safe, well-designed, and easy to use.

Flekkefjord, Norway

Who says southern Norway doesn’t have some of the best rail biking on Earth? Well … no one, really. But if you’re in the Flekkefjord area and looking for stunning nature scenes, architectural wonders, and some leg-pumping, self-propelled, train-inspired action, the rail-biking tour at Flekkefjordbanen is not to be missed.

This railway line operated for most of the 20th century, connecting Flekkefjord to Sørlandsbanen. Though the last journey made by the Flekkefjordbanen train was in 1990, visitors and locals alike can once again tour this magical area by rail — by rail bike .

Local Norwegians are intent on preserving the railroad and turning it into a living museum. Example A: The slogan, which goes “cultural salvation through active use.” Rail biking is the perfect way to put that slogan into action. An activity suitable for old and young alike, the track takes you through a beautiful natural landscape and no less than 17 tunnels. There are tours every day in the summer.

revolution rail co 1 rail bike

The Adirondacks-based Revolution Rail Co. started with its initial rail bike tour leading riders on a six-mile adventure through the forest along the Hudson River in New York. One of the highlights of this fairly flat-terrain ride is crossing a trestle bridge over the Hudson (think Stand By Me sans train). At the turnaround point, riders can refuel with a snack and a drink while the bikes are readied for the return trip.

This trip will truly be a unique exploration for most, considering this section of the Adirondacks has never seen passenger traffic before. Tours run throughout each day, and there is no minimum age requirement, meaning even baby Timmy can be a part of the fun. The company has since expanded beyond this one tour to multiple rail biking locations in New Jersey, Colorado, and even coastal Maine.

Fort Bragg, California

The East Coast may have popularized rail bike tours, but “The Other Coast” is picking up on the trend. Beginning in Fort Bragg, Pudding Creek Railbikes takes riders on a tour of California’s beautiful Mendocino County, over wooden trestle bridges and past the ancient redwood trees of the state’s famous Redwood Route. It’s an area rich in wildlife, so nature lovers can keep an eye out for osprey, blue herons, deer, turtles, and even the occasional bear.

What truly sets this rail bike tour apart, however, is that each bike is electric , which makes this the laziest — er, most leisurely — rail bike tour in the country. Just hop on and go, so you can focus on the important things, like taking pictures of birds and your kids. Plus, for an extra $30, dog owners can even take their pup along for the ride in a purpose-built rail bike “caboose.” Free bandana and doggo treat included!

What are you supposed to do when you want to play a round of golf but don't have that kind of time? You should find the nearest executive golf course. What is an executive golf course? It's a must when you only have a few hours on a Saturday instead of a whole day, but you'd like to get a few swings in. Here's what an executive golf course is, and why you should tee up at one instead of heading to the driving range. What an executive golf course is

Take the regular golf course we all know and love, and make it smaller and shorter.

It used to be that every good frontiersman had a solid felling axe and a set of woodworking tools. Give a 19th-century ranch hand a summer and he could build you a decent cabin. How many of us today could walk into the woods, pick a tree, and chop it down?

If you're itching to play the part of a lumberjack beyond the flannel and raw denim pants, you're in the right place. After spending an early Rocky Mountain spring chopping down a few problem trees in our yard and horse pasture, we've learned how to fell a tree with an axe like an expert backwoodsman. Keep reading and we'll tell you how. First: Get the right gear

How many acres is a golf course is one of those questions true fans of the game of golf may have wondered. It would also be a handy little bit of information to know for a trivia night. Want to know how much walking you would do if you didn't ride a golf court? We'll take a swing at how much land it takes to bring you a round of golf. How many acres a golf course covers

The answer isn't as straightforward as you'd think. Is it a 9-hole course? 18? How many 3-par or 4-par holes are there? Is the course par 70 or par 72? You don't have to do the math, but knowing how many acres make up a golf course is sort of a numbers game. Factors for the size To put things in perspective, one acre is a bit smaller than one football field. But what's on the course will decide how much land is needed. Each course will be different because no two courses have the same lineup of elements.

Riding the Sussex Branch Trail

Beaver lodge along Sussex Branch Trail

A beaver lodge on a reflective lake: one of many nature scenes on the Sussex Branch Trail

If you are looking to ride your bike on a rail trail that offers a great deal of solitude, check out the Sussex Branch Trail, which as the name suggests, is located in Sussex County, New Jersey. This trail is 18 miles long, unpaved, and goes through many quiet areas where you can easily spot wildlife. This trail is also a great feature of our New Jersey End-to-End bike tour.

While the Sussex Branch trail is generally flat, thanks to the fact that it was once the Sussex Branch line of the former Erie Lackawana Railroad, it has its “ups and downs” in terms of conditions and maintenance. The trail is not paved, and can have lots of puddles, mud and flooding if it has recently rained. In autumn, this trail is a spectacular tunnel of color, but that also means that there are leaves on the trail obscuring rocks. No matter when you go, make sure you show up with a mountain bike or a hybrid bike. Take your time and go slow. There’s no need for speed and it’s better to relax and enjoy the quiet solitude. The generally tough conditions of this trail help keep it quiet, and you may go long distances without seeing another cyclist.

Sussex Branch Trail conditions

One of the smoother sections of trail.

The Sussex Branch trail generally runs north-south between the Borough of Branchville and Allamuchy Mountain State Park at the southern end of Byram Township, right at the border of Morris County and Mount Olive Township. Mount Olive has a train station that is located about a mile away from the trailhead in Allamuchy Mountain State Park, so the NJ Transit Morris and Essex Line train is your only option if you are seeking to access the Sussex Branch Trail by train with your bike  Be advised that the train serves the Mount Olive station on weekdays only and you will have to switch trains in Dover if you are coming from NYC.

If you are driving, the clearest parking area is at the southern end in Allamuchy Mountain State Park.  Just off Waterloo Road (County Road 604) is a sizable parking lot with a port-a-potty . This is also the closest parking area to Interstate 80. But there are also other parking areas available along the route, mostly just roadside pull-offs.  Consult this map produced by the Sussex County tourism organization for parking locations and other info about accommodations, and things to do near the trail.

Sussex Branch Trail Lake

One of the many viewpoints of quiet lakes along the trail.

Starting at the south parking lot, you immediately get to travel north through Allamuchy Mountain State Park which has two beautiful lakes that you can stop and enjoy. Unfortunately, the first lake has you riding close to its dam and this area can severely flood under the wrong conditions. (We’re not kidding – check out this video !)  Allamuchy State park used to have quarries and you can see the remnants of those as smaller ponds along the route.  Eventually you will reach Cranberry Lake and you will get to ride along its shore.  The trail enters a small commercial area here with a deli and then goes along Route 206, more or less through parking lots, and then as a dirt path on the side of the road. Eventually the road rises up above you and you are down lower, which means poor drainage after a rain.  The good news is that Route 206 has wide shoulders here, so you can hop off and so some road riding if you want a break from the trail conditions.

Quarry pond

You can see these quarry ponds adjacent to the trail in Allamuchy Mountain State Park

At Whitehall Hill Road, there is a gap in the trail, but instead of riding along Route 206, you can ride along the much quieter Whitehall Hill Road, which parallels Route 206. At the junction of Whitehall Hill Road, Whitehall Road and Morris and Sussex Turnpike look for a little dirt path off to the right.  That is where the trail picks up again. This time you are higher up, above Route 206.  No flooding here, but it is bumpy. Take your time and push through. You’ll be rewarded by going over an old stone bridge. Shortly after you’ll arrive in Andover, which has a few restaurants and bunch of antique shops.

Old stone bridge

The trail goes over this stone bridge

North of Andover, the trail gets very quiet again as you veer away from Route 206 and head back into the woods. You will skirt along the east side of Newtown (another opportunity to access stores and restaurants) and you will need to ride on Hicks Avenue for a short distance to cover a break in the trail.  After that, it is very quiet as you bike through the woods next to several streams. One interesting site you will see is the crossing of the Paulinskill Valley Trail high above you.  This is another rail trail that was built on a line of the former New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad.  It is an uncommon sight to see two rail trail bike paths cross each other like this!

Paulinskill Valley Trail

The Paulinskill Valley Trail passes high above you.

Soon after this crossing you will approach Lafayette Township where the trail starts going along Route 15. Fortunately, you are far enough away from the road to not be distracted by a lot of car noise. Also, at this point you are biking along the Paulins Kill, a rushing stream whose flowing water adds to the sounds you will hear. But you are never far from Route 15 which has restaurants and stores along it, particularly if you need a restroom.

sculpture garden

A quirky trail-side sculpture garden welcomes you to Lafayette Township

The bike path flows in the same direction as the streams you will pass, which in a few miles takes you to Branchville where the Sussex Branch Trail ends.  The trail ends unceremoniously on Mill Street and then it’s just a quick bike ride to the borough’s historic business district where shops and restaurants are available.

Sussex Branch Trail farm scene

This bucolic farm scene is not very far from services located along Route 15 and the end of the trail in Branchville.
