Seneca Falls, NY is also one of the best vacation spots for Christmas with families.

If you have watched It’s a Wonderful Life (which you are likely to have done over Christmas some time), you will be excited to know that the fictional Bedford Falls is based on Seneca Falls.

The destination hosts a four-day-long It’s a Wonderful Life Festival which is an absolute treat for fans of the film, as well as others.

The kids will certainly enjoy frolicking around the gingerbread house and the mesmerizing light displays.

There are also exciting live concerts for you to enjoy, and if you are lucky, you may even be able to see some of the original cast members who visit the festival occasionally.

Of course, you can also enjoy the classic Christmas fantasy film playing in the town.

Jackson Hole is an incredible family retreat to spend Christmas in, but fair warning, it gets booked out very early in the year.

If you are looking to spend a white Christmas, this is the place to be!

If your family likes to ski, you can enjoy the incredible slopes even on Christmas day.

There are several other winter sports you can enjoy at this incredible snowy destination, such as sledding, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, etc.

The town is decorated appropriately for the holiday season, and the main square, especially, is a place to enjoy the festivities completely.

Enjoy some roasted marshmallows with hot chocolate, and enjoy an incredible white Christmas with your loved ones.

7. Disney World, FL

Disney World, FL

Who hasn’t entertained some Disney-themed Christmas time getaway ideas at some point in their lives?

The good thing is that this does not have to remain a fantasy in your head.

It is actually incredibly easy to make your Disney Christmas come true, provided you book well in time (trust me, last-minute bookings will not work).

Disney World, Florida is one of the best places to spend Christmas with the family.

If you are traveling with the kids, it is a no-brainer that Disney World is among the great Christmas vacation destinations, not only in the United States but in the whole world.

The lighting display is incredible in every park, and you can even enjoy “snow” in sunny Florida.

Cinderella’s Castle is converted into an incredible Frozen-themed ice palace.

Be honest, this is not exciting only for the kids but even for you!

After all, who can resist some Disney magic around the holidays?

8. Stowe, VT

If you are a fan of The Sound of Music, Stowe, Vermont is the perfect place to spend the holidays.

The Trapp Family Lodge is the actual place where the von Trapp family eventually settled after escaping Austria and touring the United States as the Trapp Family Singers.

There are plenty of exciting things to do at this shrine to the von Trapp Family.

The lodge is homely and full of music.

You can also enjoy family activities like sugar maple tours, rock climbing, holiday wreath-making workshops, etc.

You can also enjoy classic films every night, including, of course, The Sound of Music .

The lodge is also incredibly close to the slopes and you can reach your skiing destination in only 15 minutes.

I think one of the most exciting things about this destination, however, is the fact that you can sing Christmas carols with the actual von Trapp family!

Who does not want the hills to come alive with the sound of music?

9. Oahu, HI

Oahu, HI

Oahu in Hawaii is another incredible holiday destination.

This is one of the best options if you want to get away from frigid zones in December and enjoy a delightful, tropical Christmas.

Add a pina colada to your hands, and the picture is complete!

In place of snowmen, the kids can enjoy innovative sculptures made out of the beach sand.

Other than the difference in weather, you can enjoy all the other Christmas staples, like hot chocolate, caroling and opening presents under a beautifully decorated tree.

The incredible thing about Hawaii is that even if you find yourself missing a white Christmas, you can still go ice skating in man-made snow!

It may not sound exciting in theory but I assure you, it can be just as fun when you enjoy this activity with your family and loved ones.

Speaking of white Christmas, the windy city of Chicago is one of the best places to enjoy Christmas with the family.

If New York sounds like too much work or too crowded, Chicago is another great option to spend Christmas in a vibrant city, but far less hectic than NYC.

There is a massive Christmas tree which is the highlight of the city and draws crowds every year.

The parade and the fireworks are not to be missed if you are spending the Christmas break in Chicago.

The Christkindlmarket is an open-air fair that families are also likely to enjoy immensely.

If you are looking for the perfect, exciting and activity-filled Christmas holiday, Chicago is the place to be.

Lake Louise in Banff National Park in Canada is the ideal place to spend a Canadian Christmas.

This is an incredibly beautiful destination in the Canadian Rockies.

This is a picture-perfect Christmas holiday destination.

So much so that I would highly recommend that you make use of this opportunity to take a family photo so you can also use it for your Christmas card.

And well, if Christmas cards are not your style, you can certainly get an exciting photograph for your Instagram—trust me, the likes will not stop!

At Lake Louise, you can go ice skating practically every day and also enjoy hot beverages at the Ice Bar.

There are also exciting board games to play the whole day if you do not feel like taking to the slopes and skiing or sledding.

Recommended Hotel: Fairmont Château Lake Louise

12. National Harbor, MD

National Harbor, MD

National Harbor in Maryland is another great destination to spend Christmas with the family.

The Gaylord National Resort hosts the exciting ICE!

Exhibit that you are bound to enjoy with family.

There are incredible life-sized ice sculptures that are made every year keeping in mind the different themes.

But what I am certain the kids will enjoy the most are the multi-story ice slides.

In fact, let’s not pretend even the adults will not be enjoying these slides!

The kids can also enjoy an exciting Cirque du Soleil show and a Silent Disco at an indoor ice skating rink.

If it gets too cold for you inside, the harborfront is the perfect place for some warmth and rides.

13. Bahamas

Bahamas

The Bahamas are an incredible place to enjoy a holiday with the family, period.

Now, add Christmas to this mix and it is the cherry on top of an incredible cake.

If you come from a cold place and want to get away from the December chills, this island is the best place to rejuvenate and get some precious vitamin D.

I think Melia Nassau Beach will be one of the favorites for the kids to frolic about in the water.

You can also take a boat ride or go snorkeling in the incredible waters.

The great thing about the Bahamas is that it is ready throughout the year for tourists from all walks of life.

This means that you can find hotels of all ranges and they are all likely to be extremely family friendly.

I would highly recommend paying a visit to Atlantis, even if you do not book your entire stay there.

14. Venice, Italy

Venice, Italy

Venezia, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Venice is beautiful at any time of the year, but it also makes for one of the most wonderful places to go for Christmas with family.

The canal city comes to life with even greater gusto around Christmas time.

There is the Island of Murano, which I would recommend as the best place to be in Venice during Christmas.

The glassworks are exquisite and are alive in their full, sparkling glory when they are lit up for Christmas.

If you have a longer vacation and plan to stay on till New Year’s Eve, the fireworks are not to be missed and will certainly be something the kids will enjoy.

Venice is known as a picturesque holiday destination, but few people think of it as a Christmas destination.

But I think that is the beauty of this destination as then you can truly enjoy the Christmas spirit without the regular tourists crowding the historic city.

Recommended Hotel: Ca’ Bonfadini Historic Experience

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

You must compare each destination before booking one for Christmas.

Consider your family’s preferences and your budget.

Then, compare the benefits of each attraction.

Spending Christmas at The Sherry-Netherland means you’ll get a luxurious vacation.

It’s located in the center of New York, so it’s easy to go around the city and admire the holiday vibes.

But within the location, you can do only a few activities.

Marriott’s Willow Ridge Lodge is an ideal place to spend quality time with the family with the number of activities in the resort.

You can be active, play sports, relax by the pool, and sit by the campfire.

It’s just that the hotel is hard to locate.

Though once you go through that, you’ll have the best time.

Staying at Nimb Hotel in Copenhagen surpasses expectations.

There’s a beautiful garden filled with activities during Christmas.

Kids can go on rides, while adults can hang by the bar.

Unfortunately, the rates are too high compared to other accommodations.

Meanwhile, Enzian Inn is an excellent alternative to these attractions.

You’ll never run out of things to do at this alpine-themed lodge.

Plus, every room is made comfortable for the guests.

The only downside is some facilities are old and may need maintenance.

How I Picked The Destinations

I am an experienced travel writer and a parent.

My family and I always search for the best yearly Christmas vacation attractions and activities.

Apart from that, I also interview locals and fellow parents traveling.

For the places I have yet to visit and activities I haven’t tried, I consult review sites and include these in my research.

Our Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria.

  • Family-Friendly Activities: I use this criterion to evaluate the family-friendly appeal of every destination. Are the activities engaging for the entire family? Does it include Christmas-themed events, sledding, ice skating, or other fun pursuits? I consider these factors when assessing family-friendly activities.
  • Safety: This assesses the location’s safety measures. Is the vacation destination safe and secure? Are there appropriate safety measures in place? I ask myself these questions when evaluating safety.
  • Accommodation Quality: I use this to rate the quality of lodging at the vacation destination. Are the accommodations comfortable and clean? What amenities are on offer? I consider these factors when assessing accommodation quality.
  • Affordability: This rates the affordability of every trip. What expenses are included in the attraction rates? Are the activities worth the price? Will all family members be satisfied with the cost? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the budget-friendly value of the destination.
  • Accessibility: I use this criterion to evaluate the convenience of reaching the destination. Is it located near major cities or airports? Is it easily accessible by car? I consider these factors when assessing ease of access.
  • Festive Ambiance: This evaluates the holiday spirit of the activities, properties, or attractions. Are there Christmas decorations and lights in the area? Are holiday programs offered during the Christmas season? I ask myself these questions when assessing the festive ambiance of the vacation destination.
  • Festive Atmosphere: For the ideal Christmas vacation, families should assess the festive atmosphere of the activity or the attraction. Are there any Christmas decorations in the area? Are there Christmas lights hung on the attractions? Will there be holiday programs during Christmas? These are the questions I ask myself to evaluate the festive atmosphere.

The Best Places to Go for Christmas

These are 20 of the best places to spend Christmas this year.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

family travel for christmas

For some people, the perfect Christmas vacation involves fully leaning into winter on a snowy mountain somewhere, curled up next to a crackling fire. Others prefer to lounge on a beach as far away from cold weather as possible. Wherever you choose to spend "the most wonderful time of year," you're likely to find some version of holiday cheer.

From the sunny shores of Saint Lucia to the storybook town of Solvang, California, to Santa Claus' own hometown in Finnish Lapland, these are the best places to visit for Christmas this year.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is an idyllic ski destination perched in the beautiful Tetons of Wyoming. Late December here is packed with holiday programming that typically includes ice skating, skiing with Santa, and caroling. The festivities usually kick off with a Christmas tree lighting and end with fireworks on New Year's Eve.

There are several stunning slopeside lodges to choose from, including the luxurious Teton Mountain Lodge and Spa and the ski-in, ski-out Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole . Looking for gifts in downtown Jackson? The iconic elk antler arches that frame the Town Square are illuminated for the holidays, making it feel magical. For a unique adventure that embraces the hot and cold, plan a trip to the Granite Hot Springs Pool , which can be accessed only by snowmobile, fat bike, dog sled, or skis.

New York City

There's truly nothing like Christmas in New York City . The city lights shine brightly year-round, but holiday lights add to the magic. You'll hardly have to look for activities or entertainment with all the famous displays: the enormous tree at Rockefeller Center and the smaller but still dazzling tree at Washington Square Park, the LED-lit Saks Fifth Avenue facade, and the animated window displays at Macy's Herald Square, to name a few. You can sip hot chocolate while you shop for last-minute gifts at German-style Christmas markets and partake in the age-old tradition of watching the Radio City Rockettes perform their annual Christmas Spectacular on a holiday vacation in NYC.

Bruges, Belgium

KavalenkavaVolha/Getty Images

The Bruges Christmas Market is one of the best in Europe. This enchanting event takes over the Markt, the square at the heart of the city, with stands and wooden chalets selling everything from handmade Christmas ornaments to waffles and woolly socks. The colorful storefronts surrounding the square are adorably festooned with holiday decorations, and you'll find confectioneries serving Belgian hot chocolate — no doubt some of the best you'll ever taste. The festivities extend to a smaller market in nearby Simon Stevinplein square. Elevate your stay with a suite overlooking the picturesque canal at the luxurious and historic Hotel Van Cleef .

Beaver Creek, Colorado

Another place to experience the holidays on the ski slopes is Beaver Creek, Colorado, about 12 miles over the road from bustling Vail. This picturesque ski village typically sees festive activities for the whole family, from an annual Christmas tree lighting to changing events like holiday movie nights and cookie-baking competitions.

As for a cozy place to rest your head, The Osprey offers luxurious accommodations and a heated outdoor pool all mere feet from the chairlift. Otherwise, you can book one of just 60 rooms at The Pines Lodge . Both offer ski-in, ski-out access.

Saint Lucia

If your idea of a white Christmas involves soft, powdery sand, consider going to this beautiful Caribbean island. The luxurious Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort , typically offers a full lineup of holiday activities such as visits from Santa, a traditional family Christmas meal, and a New Year's Eve beach bash. Of course, you can also spend your days lounging on the stunning beach between St. Lucia's iconic peaks, the Pitons, or enjoying the resort's regular amenities and activities, including a pool, spa, dive facility, and kayak rentals.

Highlands, North Carolina

If you're looking for a charming, small-town Christmas experience that feels like it's straight out of a Hallmark movie, head to Highlands, North Carolina. This picturesque town is in the southern Appalachian Mountains, within the Nantahala National Forest. Throughout December, you'll find storefronts along and around Main Street decorated with wintry displays. The city runs a competition, so cast your vote on which you think is the best. Visit with Santa in Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on any Saturday in December leading up to the big day. Old Edwards Inn and Spa and Half-Mile Farm ( favorite hotels among Travel + Leisure readers) offer cozy accommodations with a side of holiday decorations and Christmas cheer.

Salzburg, Austria

Christmas markets, warm glühwein (mulled wine), medieval castles, and a museum wholly dedicated to Christmas will surely get you into the holiday spirit while visiting Salzburg. As you probably know, the city is the birthplace of Mozart and the setting of "The Sound of Music," a movie that seemingly plays on repeat over the holidays. Ice skate around a statue of the iconic composer at Mozartplatz and soak in stunning views of the snow-capped Alps on the south-facing terrace of the Hohensalzburg Fortress . The most luxurious place to stay? That would be Hotel Goldener Hirsch right in Old Town.

Solvang, California

If you won't have a chance to wander through a storybook town in Denmark this holiday season, you can get a similar feel in Solvang. The small city in Santa Ynez Valley was founded by a group of Danes in the early 1900s. They created this adorable community, now known for its Danish businesses and architecture. Solvang typically hosts Julefest , a month-long village celebration complete with outdoor gatherings and holiday decorations. Make the stay even more Christmassy with a stay at The Landsby or the Winston , two of Solvang's coziest boutique hotels.

Stowe, Vermont

A popular ski destination among East Coasters and one of the most picture-perfect places to go for Christmas, Stowe is within driving distance of several major northeastern cities (Boston, Albany, and Montreal, to name a few). The ski season typically starts in November, so this is an ideal place to hit the slopes if you're looking for a white, powder-filled Christmas. Stay at The Lodge at Spruce Peak for beautiful mountain views and ski-in, ski-out access.

Edinburgh Castle, arguably the city's most recognizable landmark, glows over the holiday season. The annual Castle of Light event began in 2019 and draws crowds with spectacular displays projected onto the exterior walls of the 12th-century stronghold. The projections typically get a refresh every year, and have included everything from fire-breathing dragons to flowers. Other holiday must-dos include the festive afternoon tea at Dome , where the stately Georgian Tea Room is enhanced with seasonal decorations. Sip mulled wine at one of the Christmas markets and ice skate on George Street for the full experience. If you're around on New Year's Eve, participate in Hogmanay, Scotland's own end-of-year celebration. Edinburgh puts on a Hogmanay festival that includes a torchlight procession, concerts, and a disco party.

Washington, D.C.

See the National Christmas Tree, ice skate at Washington Harbour, and sing along with a choral concert at the National Cathedral this December. Washington, D.C., hosts an array of holiday happenings throughout the season, and many of them are free, so go ahead and spend some extra money Christmas shopping. Head to one of the renowned Smithsonian museums to escape the cold weather, bundle up and admire the lights at the National Zoo, or walk along the National Mall with a hot cocoa in hand. When it comes to accommodations, The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown can hardly be beat.

Florida Keys

With pleasantly warm December weather, the Florida Keys are an ideal escape for those looking to spend the holidays in a U.S. beach destination. Kick off your Christmas vacation with a scenic road trip through the Florida Keys, stopping at islands en route to Key West. This is a popular time to visit, so consider staying away from the crowds at one the best hotels in the area, the secluded Sunset Key Cottages , a 27-acre private island resort accessible by ferry. Upon arriving, you'll find serenity just a short trip from the attractions of Key West.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is a great place to visit any time of the year. Loved for its culture, food, and picturesque setting, the city typically hosts a number of holiday events throughout December. Annual highlights include the Santa Fe Botanical Garden's Glow light display and Christmas concerts inside the impressive Loretto Chapel leading up to December 25. You can even find winter sports at Ski Santa Fe , about 15 miles away. For a special hotel experience, book your stay at Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe , which offers a range of festive amenities, or spend the night on the historic and holiday-lit Santa Fe Plaza at La Fonda .

Buenos Aires

Christmas is a summer holiday in the Southern Hemisphere, and Buenos Aires celebrates it with outdoor asado feasts and fireworks. High temperatures in December range from the upper 70s to the low 80s Fahrenheit, which means Papá Noel sometimes wears a tank top. The sunny weather is perfect for sipping cocktails and picnicking on the Plaza Intendente Alvear. While you're in the Argentine capital over the holidays, sample the pan dulce ("sweet bread"), admire the decorations that usually take over the Galerías Pacífico shopping center, or make like a local and escape the city to a nearby beach.

There's just something especially magical about London at Christmastime. Between the glittering lights, cider-slinging holiday markets, themed pop-up bars, and ice skating rinks from Hyde Park to the Queen's House in Greenwich, the city really comes alive for the holiday season. Stay at The Lanesborough for a truly festive experience — the luxurious hotel has beautiful holiday decorations, in-suite shopping from Harvey Nichols, and the option to have your room fully decorated with the hotel's Christmas in Residence program.

Rovaniemi, Finland

Why not spend the holidays in Santa Claus' hometown? Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, is home to Santa Claus Village and SantaPark , where you'll find the man himself and his reindeer sidekicks. During the winter, the arctic landscape is covered by a thick blanket of pretty snow. You'll also have the best chance of the year at spotting the northern lights. There are several hotels in the area with glass igloo accommodations, which provide stunning 360-degree views of the aurora borealis from inside.

The Maldives

If you'd rather wear sandals than snowshoes, the Maldives might be the ideal place for you to spend Christmas. Winter is the dry season, when the weather here is at its best. Daily highs average in the mid-80s Fahrenheit — perfect for a holiday beach getaway. At the end of the day, kick back in luxurious accommodations at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island or The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands .

Bavaria, Germany

Spend your Christmas holidays in this picturesque region in southern Germany. Start your adventure in Munich, where you can sip mulled wine as you stroll through a genuine German Christkindlmarkt. Then head out of the city to find Christmas spirit in small towns like medieval Rothenburg or go skiing in the Alps. Wherever you go, beware of the spooky Krampus, a frightening Christmas beast of local folklore.

Quebec City

Quebec City is about as European as it gets outside of Europe itself. The predominantly French-speaking Québécois celebrate the season with German-style markets, ice skating at Place D'Youville, and shopping in Old Quebec, transformed into a dreamy scene. For a truly Canadian experience, take a ride on Au 1884 (aka the Dufferin Terrace Toboggan Slide), one of Quebec City's oldest attractions. The slide runs right past Fairmont Le Château Frontenac , a castlelike hotel where you can stop for soup or coffee to escape the cold.

The Bahamas

Just a short flight south for East Coasters, The Bahamas is another popular choice for travelers seeking sun and sand during the holidays. Mid-December is the start of the high season here, probably because daily highs in the 80s are such a welcome change to chilly temperatures in much of the U.S. Thanks to a wide range of accommodation options — from resort complexes like Baha Mar with seemingly endless amenities to more intimate private island resorts like T+L reader favorite Kamalame Cay — there's a perfect Christmas vacation waiting for you in this sunny oasis.

If you and your family are itching to spend the season someplace new, you’ve come to the right place. These are the best Christmas family vacation ideas and destinations for your whole crew.

Hoping to spend the holidays someplace warm? Try the desert oasis of Palm Springs, California, or head to the festive community of Gruene, Texas for a two-steppin’ Christmas celebration complete with a cowboy Santa Claus. (Seriously!) Or perhaps you’ve got something more, ahem, international in mind? In that case, might we suggest Copenhagen, Denmark, a.k.a. the hygge capital of the world, or Frankfurt, Germany for the world-famous Christmas market? Of course, for some, it’s not Christmas without a dusting of snow. If that’s more in line with your idea of a Christmas vacation, book tickets to a ski town such as Park City, Utah or Whitefish, Montana.

Whether you opt for a small town on the other side of the country, an all-inclusive resort, or someplace nearby, know that any trip will be special if you take the time to create memories and savor moments with those you love best. So give your family the gift of travel this year and book your tickets ASAP for a fabulous Christmas vacation.

Gruene, Texas

A two-steppin' Texas Christmas awaits in this thriving historic district located within the community of New Braunfels. Within 15 walkable acres, you'll pose for pics with Cowboy Kringle, Gruene's distinctive wrangler twist on Santa Claus, cheer on the annual Pony Express Ride, then head to Gruene Hall , Texas’s oldest continuously running dance hall, for a calendar jam-packed with holiday shows.

Nestled in the heart of the Green Mountains, this Christmas card-worthy village and its surrounding hamlets shine with New England charm. You and your family can go cross-country skiing, visit covered bridges, and bundle up for horse-drawn sleigh rides through snow-covered pastures at Billings Farm & Museum .

Grand Marais, Minnesota

Along the frozen waters of Minnesota's majestic North Shore, a Lake Superior art colony offers wintry woods to explore, cozy respites from the chill, and plenty of places to bolster your creative side. Don't miss the Scandinavian-inspired "Oh Ole Night" Christmas parade and plenty of opportunities to shop locally made crafts!

Middleburg, Virginia

Fans of an old-fashioned Christmas should head to the center of Virginia's horse and hunt country , where the holiday festivities include cheering on a parade of loyal hounds, shopping for European holiday decor, and enjoying cocktail hour with Cupcake the miniature horse in the beautifully bedecked main lobby of BET co-founder Sheila Johnson's luxurious Salamander Resort .

Pella, Iowa

While this Midwestern town is perhaps best known for its spring Tulip festival, it also makes for a supremely festive family Christmas vacation. The distinctively Dutch celebration includes a traditional Kerstmarkt, Sinterklaas arriving on a wooden boat during the annual Christmas parade, and plenty of Gouda cheese and yummy fresh-baked pastries.

Whitefish, Montana

The rugged beauty of this Flathead Valley town is on full display come colder months, which makes this food-and-fun-filled community the perfect Christmas destination for adventure-oriented families. Snowshoe in Glacier National Park, ski powder-dusted trails at Whitefish Mountain Resort , or take a scenic horse-drawn sleigh trip at Bar W Guest Ranch before cozying up in a chalet-themed suite at Hidden Moose Lodge (pictured).

Park City, Utah

This buzzy Utah mountain town may be best known for skiing, great shops, and Sundance, but come Christmas there are activities the whole family can enjoy. To add to the calendar: a ride on the North Pole Express, the Holiday Spectacular Sing-a-long, and Santa's annual ride down the town lift.

Palm Springs, California

palm springs california

There are few deserts as merry and bright as Palm Springs on any given day, but during the holidays, it’s even more brilliant. You can leave that parka in the North Pole, because the average high in December is a mild 70 degrees. That means you’ll actually want to be outside to take in all the delights at the Festival of Lights Parade . For those looking for dinner and a show, The Purple Room Supper Club serves up holiday-themed Elvis tribute shows and surf-and-turf dinners. And natural beauty and more-is-more lights come together at the WildLights display at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens .

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Copenhagen, Denmark

copenhangen denmark

What could be more Christmas-y than the birthplace of “hygge,” which just so happens to be the Danish word for all things cozy and comfortable? Experience the wonder of a traditional Danish Christmas while you wander the cobblestone streets in search of naughty elves (“nisse”). The brave can go for a dip in icy waters and then pop into a wood-fired sauna. Or you could save the ice for drinks and sample some of the special Christmas beers and holiday desserts such as kringle and risalmande. We’re also willing to bet you’ve never seen a parade quite like the floating Santa Lucia affair —kayaks decorated with lights sail through the canal.

Disney World, Orlando, Florida

walt disney and mickey mouse partners statue and cinderella castle, magic kingdom, orlando, florida, usa

Look, you know you’re going to have to take the kids there eventually, so why not do it at Christmas? You get all the magic of the Magic Kingdom along with a whole bunch of holiday-specific activities that will make for fond memories whether you’re a Disney Diehard or not. There are literally hundreds of trees and wreaths layered throughout the park—some trees of as tall as 70 feet. What’s more, on 23 nights in November and December, regular park admission gets you into Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party . You can ride rides under the twinkle of the Christmas lights and enjoy parades, parties, and performances, as well as cookies and hot chocolate at various spots around the park.

Scottsdale, Arizona

If your idea of a very merry day involves a round of golf and little spa time, you’re in luck. There are more than 50 spas and more than 200 golf courses here. But 18 holes and a massage aren’t everything! You can also commune with nature on a hike of Camelback Mountain and then commune with the locals at Scottsdazzle , a month-long festival in Old Town featuring live nativities, wine tastings, tree lightings, train rides, ice skating, and more.

Kennebunkport, Maine

a large mansion reflecting off the waters of the batson river in kennebunkport maine on a cold sunny winter day

There’s a reason almost every Hallmark Christmas movie takes place in a small town in Maine. Discover it for yourself on a holiday trip set in Kennebunkport (population 3,639). During Christmas Prelude in November and December, there are tree lightings to choose from, a pooch parade, fireworks displays, seashore holiday trolley rides , and lobster bakes. By the end of the trip, you may be tempted to quit your big- to midsize-city job and put down permanent roots—just like a Hallmark heroine.

Frankfurt, Germany

traditional christmas market in the historic center of frankfurt, germany

Did you know the Frankfurt Christmas Market has been a thing since 1393. It has, and it’s huge—more than 3 million people make a pilgrimage to this event every year. You’ll know why when you feast on mulled wine, grilled sausages, and gingerbread after making the rounds (literally!) on the historical merry-go-round. And nothing could be sweeter than the sounds of church bells and carols as you shop for handmade gifts and treasures.

Fredericksburg, Texas

fredericksburg texas christmas

The Lone Star State might not be the first place you’d expect to experience a very German yuletide, but this Hill Country destination is full of surprises. Fly into Austin or San Antonio and then head for the hills to experience the 26-foot-tall traditional German wooden Christmas pyramid and the stunning lights of the Marktplatz almost every evening at the Nights of Lights event. There’s also ice skating, a Christmas Wine Affair wine tasting tour, and superb shopping at more than 100 shops and boutiques.

New York, New York

a large christmas tree in a plaza

Embrace your inner tourist—this is the time to hit all the tried-and-true holiday hotspots. That means, you gotta go see that tree at Rockefeller Center, and you might as well skate while you’re there. You should also make your way to the market at Bryan Park, take time to see the Rockettes at Radio City and treat yourself to something fun at FAO Schwartz. In your downtime, you can have a word with Santa at Macy’s and take a walk past the fab windows at Bergdorf’s. As if that’s not enough, you can also experience incredible art at The Met on Christmas Eve. What a gift!

Missoula, Montana

snowy landscape in winter in missoula united states

A visit to the Treasure State is just the ticket for folks who believe there can be no Christmas without snow—Missoula averages 40 inches of the white stuff every year. Active family members can bond in the great outdoors—skiing, snowshoeing, sightseeing—at SnowBowl, which is located in the Lolo National Forest. There’s plenty of holiday-specific events here, too, during the month of December. Have you ever heard 100 tubas play Christmas music at once? You will at TubaChristmas ! Later you can warm up your body with hot chocolate at Ducrey Chocolate and warm your heart with a carol-centric performance by the Missoula Symphony & Chorale.

Chicago, Illinois

If you’re looking for a location to break out your warmest puffer coat, there’s no greater place to rock it than the Windy City. There’s obviously a ton to do year-round here, but Christmas vacation is the right time for ice skating at Millennium Park, sledding at Soldier Field, and then seeing a performance of The Nutcracker performed by Joffrey Ballet . Cap it all off with a visit to Frosty’s Bar, a pop-up tavern that will get you into the holiday spirit with spirits.

Asheville, North Carolina

biltmore museum in asheville nc

For years, artists have been flocking to this charming town located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Now it’s your turn! Not only can you buy a heap of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gifts for the folks on your nice list (and maybe even a few for those on the naughty one, too), there are also loads of holiday-themed activities like gingerbread house competitions, holiday bazaars, and performances that you can take on with your nearest and dearest. And you must make time to tour the Biltmore . During the holidays, the stunning estate is a sight to behold—the 35-foot Fraser fir is adorned with more than 25,000 ornaments and 100,000 holiday lights.

Bentonville, Arkansas

a building with a flag on top

Originally known as the birthplace of Sam’s Club and Walmart, this Arkansas hamlet is now showing up on a lot of “Best Places to Live” lists. It’s also a great place to vacation during the holidays thanks to a town square that’s absolutely brimming with holiday spirit courtesy of thousands of lights and Christmas tree. After you check out the twinkling lights, you can show off your moves at the 7,000-square-foot ice skating rink located nearby. There are plenty of shops, parades, and an aptly named pop-up bar called Miracle on Second Street that serves up hot toddies.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

a street with buildings and lights with snow in the background

There’s something that just feels right about spending Christmas in the mountains. Not only do you get to snowboard and snowmobile, you also get to experience things you don’t get to see every day. For example, have you ever seen Santa ride a horse? You will here at the Santa Horseback Procession. You can also visit with him at his workshop during the Steamboat Festival .

Christmas is a magical time of year, so it makes the perfect time to plan a trip for your family full of wonder, light, and joy.

family travel for christmas

While there are countless locations you can visit that fall into the “ captivating”  category, there are a few that stand above the rest in terms of being truly magical as a Christmas destination.

Making Christmas Vacations Magical

This Christmas season, experience the wonder and joy of this time of year in a brand-new way by embarking on your own Christmas adventure to one of these 15 magical destinations.

Make wonderful memories with your family as you discover the joy of the season in a whole new way. Each of these destinations offers a sense of wonderment that makes it unique enough to merit a spot on my top 15 magical destinations.

1. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

family travel for christmas

Aptly named a joyous Christmas destination,  Bethlehem, Pennsylvania  specializes in the wonderment of Christmas.

Located in Lehigh Valley, just about an hour north of Philadelphia, this little town could be straight out of a Hallmark movie. This  Christmas City  gives kids the thrill of reading stories with Santa, participating in a gingerbread man contest, and making crafts with Santa’s elves.

The main street is lined with Christmas markets, some of which are indoors, while choir singers serenade guests throughout their experience.

If you want to add another interesting stop on this trip, the  Delaware River Railroad  is just about 20 minutes away. This is noteworthy because they offer  Polar Express  Christmas Train Rides. Need I say more?

2. San Antonio, Texas

family travel for christmas

If you are like me, your first thought when seeing San Antonio and the famed  Alamo  on a Christmas vacation list is, why?

Well, first impressions aside, this is actually a very interesting Christmas-themed destination from mid-November through mid-January.

In fact, the  River Walk  has for hundreds of years adorned this area with Mexican Christmas lanterns. The purpose was supposedly to help light the way for the Holy Family during this sacred time of year.

You and your family can experience this awe-inspiring tradition either by foot or, for an even more fun experience, opt for a boat ride on  Go Rio Cruises.  These tours are kid-friendly and even allow you to bring along your stroller on board.

As part of your visit to this magical area, your family can add  The DoSeum , San Antonio’s kid’s museum to the agenda.

The museum hosts a Winter Wonderland, now renamed  Lightscape , event once a year in the  San Antonio Botanical Garden . More than a million Christmas lights twinkle, creating a grand experience.

This whole event is made even more special by adding a visit to the nearby  Natural Bridge Caverns  to the day. Here, professional Christmas carolers’ voices echo 180 feet below the surface.

3. Nashville, Tennessee

family travel for christmas

A visit to this area during the Christmas season can be a nearly all-inclusive experience. By staying at the  Gaylord Opryland Hotel , you get to be part of Christmas at Gaylord, which comes with a host of activity options.

First, the hotel itself is decked out in Christmas regalia, including lights and decor. In fact, some people visit the hotel itself simply for its interior displays during this time of year without even being a guest.

However, as a guest, you can take advantage of the Christmas vacation package, including a Build-a-Bear Workshop, a gingerbread house decorating contest, a holiday cruise on the  General Jackson Showboat , and much more.

I wouldn’t be doing this destination justice without mentioning the spectacular  ICE  experience, which is a dazzling display of thrilling ice slides some more than two stories tall, larger-than-life ice sculptures, and ice tunnels.

This immensely popular attraction utilizes over two million pounds of ice, and features hand-carved depictions from various Christmas classics each year.

Be warned, the temperature in the ICE experience is kept cold to preserve the sculptures, so wear your coat and mittens.

While the ice sculptures of the various classic scenes are neat to see, there is always a classic Nativity scene that is breathtaking.

Also, there is ice skating, tubing and the Polar Express experience, and more to enjoy all within the confines of the Gaylord Opryland Hotels.

( As an aside, you can venture into Nashville and see an NHL hockey game, watching the hometown NHL Team, the  Predators , for a different kind of icy adventure.)

4. Greenough, Montana, The Resort at Paws Up

family travel for christmas

Situated a mere 35 minutes outside Missoula in Blackfoot Valley, this is a luxury resort located on a 37,000-acre working farm.

Here, at the  Resort at Paws Up , you and your family are transported to a Montana Christmas experience and everything it entails.

Enjoy an old-fashioned tree trimming party, cookie decorating, gingerbread house contest, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and dog sledding.

Christmas packages typically offer five-night stays and include snacks, meals, and non-alcoholic beverages.

On Christmas Eve, there is a festive Christmas Eve party, where Santa himself makes a guest appearance.

(Fair warning this all-inclusive experience is pretty pricey and would likely be a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience. However, I felt it merited a mention on my list simply for its uniqueness.)

5. New York City, New York

family travel for christmas

No list of magical Christmas destinations would be complete without at least a mention of New York City. After all, just think of all the Christmas movies with a New York backdrop. How could I not include a trip to the Big Apple in this list?

To list what all you can do as a family in New York would take up this entire article. However, there are a few themed Christmas activities that you must make sure to fit in on a holiday visit.

This, of course, includes a visit to see the  Rockefeller Christmas Tree all lit up, as well as walking 5th Avenue and seeing all the window displays.

Add  ice skating  at various locations and seeing a  Radio City Rockettes  performance to the list, and you have the makings of a truly magical vacation.

For something a little outside of the typical scope of New York activities, consider a visit to the  New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show .

During the holiday season, the Train Show decorates its collection of model trains that chug through a half-mile track winding in and out of miniature NYC landmarks such as Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State Building, and more, all of which are made out of natural materials like berries, bark, twigs and leaves.

I simply cannot end this synopsis of New York at Christmas without at least mentioning  The Ride Entertainment Experience .

The Ride is a motor coach with theater seats, flashing lights, and floor-to-ceiling windows. It takes you on a tour of the city, allowing you to witness all of New York City’s holiday regalia as well as street performances.

The ride is hosted by two New York experts who are immensely entertaining, making this a truly unique experience.

6. St. Augustine, Florida

family travel for christmas

From a snowy, cold city to America’s oldest city with much more mild temperatures in Florida, a visit to St. Augustine is an interesting and magical Christmas vacation idea.

While the location itself is pretty and features lots of interesting activities, when it comes to holiday-themed options, the city’s annual  Night of Lights  event likely cannot be beat.

This event features the lighting of three million white lights that illuminate the beautiful historic district of St. Augustine from mid-November to late January.

The sheer beauty and wonder of this display has led to it being recognized as one of the world’s top light displays, and I couldn’t agree more.

Viewing the beautiful lights of the Night of Lights is obviously priority number one when staying in St. Augustine.

You can do this in a few different ways. One is to join in a sing-along on the  Red Train Tours  or  Old Town Trolleys .

If you want a bit cozier of an experience with just a few others, try  Gold Tours  for an electric vehicle tour.

Of course, you can also opt to enjoy the views from the water aboard several vessels and can also choose to simply walk along the streets.

Ideally, you can try all of them or a combination to get immersed in the wonder of the lights.

Be sure to visit the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum for the winter event  Lighthouse Illuminations: Tides, Tidings and Trees .

7. Seattle, Washington

family travel for christmas

Admittedly, this destination wasn’t one I had considered on a list of magical Christmas vacation ideas. However, spending time in this city around the holidays is a unique and wondrous experience.

First, the  Woodland Park Zoo  features the  Iluminate Your Holidays  event. This is an immersive experience that will take your family through exhibitions of nature scape lanterns and large-scale animals, representing various wild places from around the globe. This experience is a truly unique one that will delight visitors of all ages.

After spending some time at Woodland Park, you can continue your holiday-themed adventure by visiting the famous Ravenna neighborhood dubbed  Candy Cane Lane .

More formally, this area is known as N.E. Park Road, but it’s more fun to call it by its Christmas-themed name Candy Cane Lane.

Here, there are around 23 houses, mostly 1920s Tudors that are simply delightful, that all beautifully decorate their homes. Look for features like fake snow, Christmas trees, and even life-sized moving objects.

Be sure to visit  Pike Place Market  as well, which is an open-air market where you can find a variety of handmade gifts and even free Santa photos.

8. Orlando, Florida

family travel for christmas

The Happiest Place on Earth is also a magical place to visit around Christmas, as this is considered the happiest time of year.

Walt Disney World  in Orlando, Florida, doesn’t disappoint when it comes to ramping up decor and events for the holiday season.

Each section of Disney World offers a different way to celebrate the holidays. Epcot features the big man himself, Santa Claus, traveling through the World Showcase in his horse-drawn sleigh.

As another example of the magic you can expect from Disney, the Magic Kingdom also features a holiday trolley, colorful castle projections, and a philharmonic.

There are also tons of sweet holiday treats to enjoy, like cookies and hot chocolate, throughout the parks.

The most magical experience of them all,  Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party , also takes place at the Magic Kingdom during select nights from mid-November through late December.

This is to say nothing of the seasonal decor throughout the park, where even the attractions are decked out in Christmas regalia.

Character greetings also take on an extra special significance during the holidays as they are all decked out in their Christmas finest.

Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade  and Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks Show  are just a few additional celebrations that occur this happy time of year.

If your kids are a little older or are Harry Potter super fans, then while in Orlando, it might be better for you to opt for  Universal Resort .

Universal also does it up big in terms of Christmas decorations, especially within the  Wizarding World of Harry Potter . Expect to see lights and an ultra-decorated Hogsmeade Village and Diagon Alley during your visit.

(As a general tip, the busiest time of year to visit Universal Resort is the week prior to Christmas and then the week between Christmas and New Year. If you want to visit when the crowds are down, avoid these times and shoot to visit in early January when the decorations are still up, while dealing with a fraction of the people.)

9. Chicago, Illinois

family travel for christmas

The “ Windy City”  has several holiday-themed experiences to enjoy when visiting near Christmas.

For example, the  Lincoln Park Zoo  hosts what they call the  ZooLights , which is an event that features a dazzling light display, an Enchanted Forest, a holiday-themed pop-up bar, and visits with Santa.

Another must-see attraction in the Chicago area is  The Morton Arboretum’s  tree light display. Here, your family can walk through a two-mile expanse of trees all beautifully decorated with colorful lights and set to the background of a holiday-themed musical soundtrack.

The Great Tree , located at Macy’s  Walnut Room Restaurant , is also worth adding to the itinerary.

If you want to ice skate, try either the  Ice Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park  or the better-known  Millenium Park .

10. German Christmas Markets

family travel for christmas

Admittedly, this one is a bit further away as it takes place all the way in Germany, the birthplace of the original Christkindlmarkt. This real-life German Christmas market puts our US copies to shame in many ways.

The  Dresden ,  Trier , and  Rothenburg ob der Tauber  markets are especially beloved as great Christmas marketplace destinations that are authentic and kid-friendly.

As another way to experience this and still stay with something you know well, you can opt for an  Adventures by Disney cruise, as there are cruises featuring both the  Danube  and  Rhine  Christmas markets.

The German Christmas markets feature a variety of items, as you might imagine, from freshly cooked treats to handcrafted ornaments and toys, all commingled within wooden huts selling these items.

There is nowhere that does Christmas markets better than Germany, so this is truly an unforgettable experience.

11. Asheville, North Carolina

family travel for christmas

Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville North Carolina  is the largest privately owned home in America, the Biltmore House .

This 8,000-acre property features two hotels, numerous restaurants, and the 175,000-square-foot home itself. This working farm includes livestock, produce, and more, and is pretty much self-sustained.

The Biltmore House, which was originally built by George Vanderbilt, still remains in the care and ownership of the family.

While a huge house where kids can’t touch just everything might not make you think,  “that’s a great place to take kids at Christmas.”

However, I feel experiencing  Christmas at the Biltmore  is well worth the trip simply for the Christmas decorations, lights, shopping opportunities, on-site activities, and world-class service you get at every place on the property.

You can stay at one of two hotels on the property itself by staying at either the  Village Hotel  or  The Inn .

During the winter season the house tour features a candlelight tour at night, so you can truly enjoy the Christmas decorations spread throughout the home.

You can also visit the gardens along with the greenhouse more formally known as the  Biltmore Conservatory , meaning there are all sorts of flowers and blooms to explore, even in the heart of winter.

You can  rent bikes and take a ride on the various 20 miles of paved paths, enjoy one of the many excellent  restaurants  which serve estate-grown produce and meat, as well as enjoy the various shops that are located throughout the property near the Village Hotel and the Biltmore House.

Horse carriage rides  are also available, or if your kids are old enough, horseback riding.

One thing I haven’t tried but would like to do is the  Falconry  experience that lets you actually hold a falcon and see this beautiful bird of prey in action.

(Also worth noting,  The Spa  is located on-site and is the perfect way to work away that holiday stress.)

12. Nassau, Bahamas

family travel for christmas

While this is admittedly a step outside the traditional Christmas get-away, for some people, a tropical excursion is exactly what the season calls for. Perhaps you can relate!

If this sounds like heaven to you, then the warm Caribbean climate of the  Bahamas , with its pristine beaches and delicious food, is likely a perfect fit.

While you can stay at a variety of locations in Nassau, or take a cruise to enjoy the location, I personally like the thought of flying into the area and staying put in one place to truly rejuvenate.

Therefore, for me, I would prefer staying at the luxurious world-class  Atlantis Paradise Island Resort .

This inclusive resort experience has a little bit of everything you could want in a destination including a kid-friendly water park on-site,  Aquaventure .

If your kids are old enough and interested in the experience, they can even enjoy swimming with dolphins at the  Dolphin Cay & Marine Adventures .

Oh, and there is a festive Junkanoo Parade twice weekly in  Marina Village .

Suffice it to say that although the snow might be far away, you will feel rejuvenated with your holiday getaway that even comes with a bit of a tan, which is magical in and of itself.

13. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

family travel for christmas

For a more traditional experience for the holiday season, meaning lights, cold weather and maybe even a little snow if you are lucky, add a visit to the Smoky Mountain’s own beautiful Pigeon Forge , Tennessee.

The entire city, along with nearby  Gatlinburg  decorates all the streets, buildings, and attractions for the holiday season beginning at the end of November through the early part of January.

While there are countless places to stay, and I admittedly love simply renting a cabin complete with its own private hot tub.

If you are going to visit the Pigeon Forge area during the holidays, it’s even better to stay at  The Inn at Christmas Place . This unique hotel is done up in Christmas decor all year long, but it’s especially fun to visit when there is a chill in the air and the decor fits a bit better.

(The architecture for this inn is Bavarian, which means it has traditional German design elements, making it perhaps at least somewhat like the German Christmas Villages outlined above.)

Just across the street from The Inn is the beloved Christmas Place store that also is open year-round and sells Christmas decor of all types.

When staying at the Inn, you can choose a regular room, a Christmas Suite, or even the deluxe Santa Suite.

The more deluxe rooms have a fireplace, but all of them feature Christmas decor throughout the space.

While in Pigeon Forge, make sure to visit  Dollywood , created by the famous and respected Dolly Parton, who grew up in the area.

Dollywood does an excellent job at Christmastime to incorporate lights and decorations throughout the park.

They also usually feature a live stage show or two as well that is winter or Christmas-themed.

My personal favorite is Dollywood’s stage version of  It’s a Wonderful Life  which was an interesting take on the beloved classic.

Dollywood does feature kids’ rides and many options even for little ones, including a carnival section with traditional rides like a Ferris wheel and carousel.

A winter section typically features fake snow as well, which is part of their light show, always magical to kids.

14. St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

family travel for christmas

As another option for a less-than-traditional Christmas get-away with a beach theme, consider St. Croix, in the US Virgin Islands.

This gives you access to white sand beaches and many fun activities without having to worry about getting a current passport.

When visiting, try to time your trip so you can see the  St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade . Since 1998, this has been an important tradition in the St. Croix’s area, bringing the Christmas spirit to the  Christiansted Harbor .

The illuminated boats that take part in the parade light up the ocean, and the harbor plays Christmas music to add to the experience.

In addition,  Frederiksted’s Holiday Fest  and the  Gallows Bay Holiday Festival  are ways to celebrate when in the area.

There are also Christmas markets in  St. George Village Botanical Garden  for even more Christmas-themed festivities.

Another event you will want to enjoy when in the Virgin Islands is the  Crucian Christmas Festival , which is celebrated throughout the island.

There are also arts and crafts, face-painting, games, and visits from Santa even way out in the Virgin Islands, which will keep the kids happy while you enjoy the heavenliness of the warm temperatures and the pristine beaches and seawater.

15. Steamboat Springs, Colorado

family travel for christmas

Last but certainly not least on my list for magical Christmas vacation ideas is a trip to  Steamboat Springs  in Colorado.

There are many dining options to enjoy when in the area, along with a fireworks show, hot springs, and snowshoe trails.

Of course, the primary draw for this area is excellent skiing opportunities, but there are many other  activities  to enjoy as a family as well if that simply isn’t your thing.

Enjoy sleigh rides, tubing, horseback riding, alpine slides, snowmobile riding, and more when visiting Steamboat’s  Yampa Valley , with the beautiful backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains .

If you want to go somewhere where the odds of snow are better than most, then planning a trip to Steamboat Springs is likely a good idea.

While the weather is notoriously fickle in most locations, during the winter months, this is known as a preeminent destination for skiing and great snow.

Steamboat Spring offers a wide variety of lodging and accommodations, from luxurious resort-style locations and condos to small bed and breakfasts full of charm.

In fact, there are more than 150 lodging options in Steamboat, so there is sure to be something that fits your family’s budget requirements and accommodation preferences.

The Sheraton Steamboat Resort  or  The Steamboat Grand  are both wonderful options with on-site restaurants, fitness centers, spas, and outdoor heated pools. There are also cabins and campgrounds if you want a more rustic experience.

Overall, Steamboat Springs is known for its charm and affordability when compared to other ski towns and the holidays bring out the very best in the area for both residents and visitors alike.

7 Festive Holiday Destinations to Visit with Kids Over Winter Break

These festive cities have even more activities and attractions than usual to bring families together during the holiday season..

Jean Chen Smith

  • The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a great time to travel with kids because you don’t have to worry about anyone missing school.
  • I’ve found that certain cities across the U.S. are especially festive to visit over Christmas break and have even more activities and attractions than usual to bring families together.
  • Based on my own family travels, these are my picks for the best cities to visit for the holidays.

The holidays are my favorite time of year because of the beautiful decorations and the festive cheer of the season. It’s also a great time to visit some of the country’s top family vacation spots because of winter break from school. Each year, I try to coordinate with my extended family and meet up at a destination that’s a midway point for everyone.

Festive Holiday Destinations That Go All-In for Christmas

I especially love visiting cities during the holidays because they’re extra festive at this time of year. Plus, there’s always a lot of special activities and attractions that bring our extended families together over Christmas vacation. And you can easily explore a city whether you book a hotel stay downtown or make reservations for a vacation rental farther out. Whatever your travel style, these are my the cities across the U.S. that go above and beyond to make winter break festive for everyone.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON: 29 Festive Family Resorts and Hotels for Christmas

1. New York, New York

Christmas at Rockefeller Center (Photo: Tishman Speyer)

Is it a cliché to romanticize New York City for the holidays ? Maybe. But growing up in New Jersey, one of my favorite memories was spending time in Manhattan during the Christmas season. The city buzzes with fun activities for children and adults alike.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is one of the most iconic sights during the holidays and a must-see when you visit the city. More than 50,000 colorful LED lights are strung on a Norway Spruce, typically measuring 75 feet or higher. You lace up your skates and take several spins around Rockefeller Center skating rink under the glow of the tree. It can get crowded, but my kids have always loved the experience. Afterwards, warm up with some hot chocolate and indulgent pastries at La Maison du Chocolat . The French patisserie is well-known for it chocolates, but the baked goods are truly not to be missed, either.

WHERE TO STAY: 10 Best Family Hotels in New York City

Bryant Park’s Winter Village is one of my favorite spots to shop for holiday gifts. Each year starting in late October, artists showcase their handmade products in individual booths. They’re open this holiday season from October 27, 2023, through January 2, 2024, and make a perfect spot for some holiday shopping or a post-Christmas gift for yourself.

Finding family-friendly restaurants in New York City is easier than you might think, too. One fun place to grab some dinner is Eataly , an Italian marketplace with restaurants, groceries, and quality gifts. I recommend a casual lunch at La Pizza and La Pasta , where (as its name implies) pizza and pasta are the stars. Stay at the Sofitel New York , which is conveniently located in Midtown and also offers complimentary breakfast for kids 12 years old and under.

2. Asheville, North Carolina

Christmas at the Biltmore (Photo: The Biltmore Company)

Asheville is perhaps best known for the Biltmore Estate , a historic museum representing Gilded Age architecture, and Christmas at the Biltmore is a spectacular experience for the entire family. I suggest booking accommodations there if you’re able to. The property offers three types of lodging—hotel, inn, or cottages—and no matter which you choose, you’ll be wowed by the magical experiences at the estate.

Decorated with more than 67 Christmas trees, 45,000 lights, and 1,000 feet of garland throughout the property, it’s a sight to behold. The multi-course Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feasts are a sample of the things my family most looks forward to. We don our festive apparel and sit down to a traditional meal prepared by experts, without the daunting task of cleanup.

WINTER WONDERS:   10 European Christmas Markets Where You Can Celebrate the Season

Asheville also has a vibrant shopping scene that really comes alive this time of year. The storefronts and streets of this trendy city are lined with festive lights and decorations throughout the holidays, including the prime winter break period for families between Christmas and New Year’s.

This year, The Omni Grove Park Inn is hosting the 31st annual National Gingerbread Competition , drawing contestants from across the United States to showcase their creations. The hotel will display them all from November 27, 2023, through January 2, 2024, giving you plenty of time to take in the delicious confections. (Fair warning: They smell delicious and you will leave feeling hungry.)

3. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Gingerbread House Walk display at The Grand Geneva Resort and Spa (Photo: Grand Geneva Resort and Spa)

This Midwest town of Lake Geneva , about an hour outside of Chicago, pulls out all the stops during the Christmas season. The annual holiday tree lighting ceremony at Flatiron Park officially kicks off the festivities the day after Thanksgiving. Santa is on hand to spread holiday cheer, stores welcome shoppers with Black Friday deals, and you can grab some free refreshments as you meander and browse.

SEASON’S GREETINGS:   10 Magical Christmas Vacations for Families

The Grand Geneva Resort and Spa is my family’s favorite hotel in the area because not only do kids stay free , but the resort is also transformed into a winter wonderland during the holidays. Decked out in more than two million lights that wow, the resort also holds a huge Gingerbread House Walk display created by area residents, both adults and children who vie for cash prizes for the best presentation.

The land-based Trolley Tour of Lights (running November 20 through December 30, 2023) is a memorable way to enjoy the outdoor light displays around the resort. And the delightful 40-minute Santa Cruise (November 24 through December 30, 2023) is an equally unforgettable way to tour the holiday lights right on Lake Geneva.

4. Teton Village, Wyoming

Lighted Antler Arch in Jackson Holel, Wyoming (Photo: Jackson Hole)

With snow-covered streets aglow with twinkling lights and plenty of winter activities to keep all members of your family busy, Teton Village is a magical place to visit during Christmastime. Climb aboard a horse-drawn sleigh as you ride through the National Elk Refuge , where you can spot many of these hearty animals as well as coyotes and eagles. Then lace up your skates and take a spin on the ice skating rink in the village before heading back to your hotel at the Teton Mountain Lodge and Spa , where you’ll be greeted with live music in the lobby and if you’re lucky, a Santa sighting.

ALL ABOARD:   10 Christmas Train Rides Guaranteed to Get You in the Holiday Spirit

The family-friendly lodge’s two-bedroom suite offers up more than 1,000 square feet of space and features a private loft, fully equipped kitchen, and dining area. Large tubs make bath time convenient for parents traveling with little children. Grownups can enjoy the property’s 22-person rooftop hot tub, state-of-the art fitness center, and book a treatment at SpaTerre . The hotel’s complimentary concierge services help you plan activities for the day as well as facilitate transportation, ski rentals, lift tickets, and even grocery delivery.

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a popular destination for the holidays (Photo: Shutterstock)

Sure, Las Vegas is best known for its casinos and entertainment scene, but it should come as no surprise it’s also a hot destination for the holidays. For one thing, almost everything’s open every day throughout the holidays, including on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. This holiday season, the High Roller Observation Wheel located across from Caesars Palace will light the night with more than 2,000 colorful LED lights alongside festive music for the “Lights at The LINQ” show (nightly through December 28, 2023). Ride the wheel, which soars 550 feet above the ground, for expansive views of the city.

COLD-WEATHER FUN:   10 New England Winter Getaways for Families Who Don’t Like to Ski

Book an unforgettable dining experience at The Garden Table , which will wow you and your kids. Set amidst the serene Conservatory Botanical Gardens, with towering plants and flowers, you’ll dine inside a private gazebo as culinary experts bring out platters of sumptuous pastries, hearty sandwiches, and fun cocktails and mocktails with a holiday theme.

For a festive dinner, family-friendly Harvest serves seasonal fare that appeals to all ages. Small plates such as the pork belly lettuce wraps, salt and pepper shrimp, and their signature naan bread are great for sharing. Additional winners are the ribeye steak, roast half chicken, and roasted vegetables. Portions are large and make for great family-style dining. Book a tasting at the Ethel M Chocolates Factory in Henderson, less than 30 minutes from the Strip. The chocolate wonderland’s front garden will be decorated with over half a million lights to wow guests this December. Tastings run from 30 to 45 minutes long, with children’s pricing available.

Stay in one of the renovated StayWell rooms at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino , right in the center of the bustling Las Vegas Strip. There are five outdoor pools, a casino, more than 15 restaurant options, and a full service salon and spa .

6. Portland, Oregon

Pioneer Courthouse in Pioneer Square at Christmas (Photo: Shutterstock)

Eclectic Portland bursts with Yuletide cheer during the holiday season. Book a family-friendly suite at the The Nines Hotel , conveniently located in downtown Portland and adjacent to Pioneer Courthouse Square, where a towering Douglas Fir will be decorated with more than 9,500 lights from November 24, 2023 through mid-January of 2024.

TROPICAL GETAWAYS:   11 Caribbean Vacations That Have Something for Everyone in the Family

Depending on when you visit during the holiday season, you can enjoy the annual Portland Christmas Ship Parade , featuring a stream of about 60 festively decorated boats drifting along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers in a tradition that spans 15 days. If you visit before Christmas (November 24 through December 17, 2023) you can also hop aboard the Portland Holiday Express Train , which takes you on a 40-minute journey in a vintage 1912 steam locomotive with Santa making the rounds to greet passengers.

The City of Roses is home to a bevy of excellent restaurants, but be sure to check out the newly opened Janken , a blend of Asian fusion flavors under the direction of chef and co-owner Rodrigo Ochoa, who grew up in Medellín, Colombia. A towering cherry blossom tree sits at the center of the restaurant. The large menu accommodates all taste buds, even picky eaters. I highly recommend parents share the caviar platter if you’re seafood fans. Many kids will love the sticky ribs and the chef’s rendition of KFC.

7. Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is a popular Hawaii resort town that makes an excellent Christmas destination. Swap out sweaters and scarves for warm weather, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and excellent cuisine. Many family resorts and hotels in Hawaii go all out during the holiday season with decorations, festive food, and tons of events. So even if you get to skip the cold weather, you won’t miss the Christmas cheer.

TROPICAL VACATIONS: 6 Best Hawaii All-Inclusive Resorts for Families

My family loves staying at The Laylow during the holidays. It’s an immaculate property that sits in the heart of Waikiki with a pool, live entertainment, and daily activities for kids. Guest rooms and suites are spacious and perfect for families. The corner suite features a dining nook, a comfortable daybed, and seating area, along with two lanais. Restaurants such as Paia Fish Market and the famous Tex 808 BBQ have menus for kids, along with Thanksgiving and Christmas offerings.

Within walking distance are the many shops along Kuhio Avenue , where you’ll find a blend of luxury stores and low-key casual apparel stores. One of my favorites is the locally owned Mahina store, which sells trendy clothing at affordable prices.

18 Christmas vacation ideas for the perfect family getaway

Taking a Christmas vacation with the family might be at the top of your list for Santa this year.

But if you aim to get away for Christmas with the kids, "yule" want to get a head start on planning.

In fact, Jen Campbell Boles, the founder of  Explore More Family Travel , tells TODAY.com you should plan nine to 12 months in advance.

"It is the busiest travel season of the year to most destinations," Campbell Boles says. "(Christmas vacation) is concentrated in two weeks, unlike spring breaks which occur at various weeks between March and April and summer which is a span of May through September, depending on your school system."

SmartFlyer  travel advisor Laura Epstein says that Christmas travel is also the most expensive.

"Rates are peak rates from the entire year, and many hotels and resorts will be at full capacity," Epstein tells TODAY.com, adding that it is not uncommon to encounter seven to 10-night minimum stays in warm weather destinations.

Patience is key.

"Expect schedule changes between now and departure," Campbell Boles says. "Also, expect baggage delays so try to pack a carry on or send bags ahead of time (and) definitely send any presents ahead of time."

18 Christmas vacation ideas for families

Ready to plan a Christmas vacation for the whole family? Here are the top picks for destinations in the United States and abroad for the ultimate holiday getaway.

11 Christmas vacations for families in the U.S.

New york city, new york.

"Every Christmas movie takes place here, so they have to be doing something right," Campbell Boles says.

Families can visit the Rockefeller Christmas tree, window displays on 5th Avenue, enjoy ice skating, see the Radio City Rockettes, shop at Christmas markets and more.

Asheville, North Carolina

Come for the Biltmore Estate, Campbell Boles said, where there's a traditional Christmas celebration that includes elaborate decor and candlelit evenings. Families can also enjoy The National Gingerbread House Competition and Winter Lights at North Carolina Arboretum.

Aspen, Colorado

"Those needing snow to get in the Christmas spirit should head here and celebrate their 12 days of Christmas," Campbell Boles says, referring to the town's 12-day celebration (12 Days of Aspen) that runs through the new year. Apart from winter sports like skiing and tubing, families can also enjoy the town's annual light festival.

Park City, Utah

"Domestic ski destinations like Park City, Utah are quite popular for those looking for a winter wonderland ski and snow vacation over the winter break," Epstein tells TODAY.com. Families visiting Park City over the holidays can also go for a sleigh ride through town or check out the Midway Ice Castles.

Nashville, Tennessee

Get ready for a country Christmas! Christmas at Gaylord Opryland is a yearly celebration that offers guests ice tubing, gingerbread house decorating, a holiday breakfast with Rudolph and other seasonal fun. Don't miss "ICE!" — a winter wonderland created from two million pounds of colorful ice.

Orlando, Florida

"Disney makes everything magical," Campbell Boles says. "Visit for Disney’s Christmas party."

Families headed to Orlando might also enjoy ice skating in shorts or decompressing at a beach outside the city.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Travelers to Tulsa can get into the holiday spirit by strolling through twinkling lights and decorations at Gathering Place’s Winter Wonderland or Botanic Garden of Lights, ice skating on one of the largest rinks in the country at Arvest Winterfest or watching “A Christmas Carol” at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Charleston, South Carolina

Celebrate the holidays in the Holy City, which might feel a bit like stepping into a Charles Dickens' tale. Families can enjoy a holiday lights festival and the Children's Village at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

If the kids are worried Santa might not stop, book the French Quarter Inn's  Sleigh Bell Suite , which comes fully decked out in holiday decor and features an in-room eggnog bar, cookies and milk.

White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Experience the magic of Christmas starting the weekend after Thanksgiving at The Greenbrier with a tree lighting. Dubbed "America's Resort," families can experience weekends with Santa which include cookies and milk and one-to-one time with St. Nick for kids.

Arizona and California

Epstein tells TODAY.com that many travelers may be seeking warm weather over winter break.

"Arizona and California would be popular for travelers looking for a warm, resort like experience but without the minimum stay restrictions and expense of the Caribbean," she says.

7 family Christmas vacations outside the U.S.

For families looking outside the United States for a Christmas vacation, these seven destinations offer an abundance of holiday cheer.

Rovaniemi, Lapland

Finland has become a hot Christmas destination, Campbell Boles says. "Not only is it a winter wonderland, it is the home of Santa Claus himself. There are Christmas markets and even reindeer in the streets." Families who travel at Christmas may also experience a bonus — a possible Northern Lights sighting.

Campbell Boles says that the Christmas markets in Germany are a top winter getaway destination.

"Nuremburg (is) one of the best," she says.

Québec City, Québec

"The entire old town turns into a Christmas village," Campbell Boles explains of the Canadian city. Families visiting at Christmas can enjoy outdoor markets, ice skating and no shortage of twinkling lights.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

"Visitors to San Miguel de Allende should go to experience the Christmas culture of Mexico in a colonial town that has both colorful celebrations, but also respects the religious aspects of the holiday," Campbell Boles says, adding there are over 40 places of worship within the old town.

London, England

Shopping, ice rinks and holiday performances...oh my!

"Big cities go all out during the holidays," Campbell Boles says, adding that London is no exception. The filming location for the famed Christmas movie "Love Actually," London offers Christmas visitors markets, theater performances and a sea of historical landmarks.

The Caribbean and Mexico

Epstein tells TODAY.com that beach destinations — especially in the Caribbean and Mexico — "are at peak demand" over winter holidays.

Her clients' favorites include the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Turks and Caicos, Mexico and Jamaica.

A Capital Christmas – Washington D.C.

Contributed by Terri of FemaleSoloTrek.com

Washington DC’s Capitol Christmas tree will delight every child (and parent) who gets to visit the Nation’s Capital in December. Typically, the annual lighting on the West Lawn occurs in early December. Each year a different state is chosen to “gift” the Christmas tree. Plan to arrive at dusk (after 5 pm) when the tree is shimmering. Your children will think it is magical. But you also should bring them onto the lawn so they can see the Christmas ornaments up close. Typically, there are over 10,000 handmade ornaments. Also not to be missed is the holiday decorations at the  U.S. Botanic Gardens  which is located across the street from the U.S. Capitol. Large fir trees are strung with colored lights that bathe the sidewalk in pastel shades of lavender, blue and pink. This is a free holiday light show for families!

Love this post! I love the Christmas Markets in Chicago and I’m so glad they’re coming back this year!

Me too! I love taking the train down from Milwaukee with my sister and making a girls day out of it.

This post is awesome. I was indeed looking out for suggestions for family trips in the USA to tell me sister who stays in Seattle. And I came across this. Colorado is going to be the escape that I would be recommending for sure,

There’s something extra enchanting about a white Christmas. You can bet on it in Colorado!

Great post! I love travelling at Christmas and seeing all the Christmas lights and celebrations in new places. Disney World looks amazing! Thanks for sharing.

They really go all out for the holidays. The choreographed drone show blew my mind.

I’ve got to check out the Christmas market in Chicago! I’m only a 5 hour Amtrak ride! (:

I love NYC at Christmas! After reading this, I’d love to visit Chicago too. Great list!

I would love to visit the US during Christmas. Disney World would be such a cool experience. Thanks for sharing these amazing places and things to do.

I so hope you do one day! Disney World is always a good idea.

What an awesome roundup post! Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday!! I’m just dying to spend one in New York, but this year I’ll be hunting down an elaborate Christmas celebration in South Korea! I’ll get to New York for Christmas one day:)

Ohhh sounds wonderful. I’d love to be there in February for their Lunar new year too!

Its been my dream since I think watching Home Alone as a little girl to experience Christmas in the US just once! I’d love nothing more than going to NYC and having Christmas there! But I think I’m gonna add Vail and Chicago to my list too after this post!

Haha I just recently rewatched it! Noticed wayyy different things than I remember. NYC is a great first impression of Christmas in America.

I’m always searching for the best christmas markets in Europe but this list convinced me to maybe start looking for fun christmas destinations in the US! Especially Disney World! it looks so amazing!

You won’t be disappointed! I am looking forward to doing more European markets myself though!

This sounds like a “bucket list” challenge to me!! Christmas in a new city every year! I have been to several of these cities but not for the holidays..they sound so magical!

It’s amazing how a place can transform for the holidays. There aren’t enough Decembers in life!

Wow Christmas in the US looks awesome! I’d love to experience that one day.

I love Christmas. It is one of my favorite times of the year. I tried to make it as magical as possible for my girls and am pleased to see as they are in late teens and twenties that is still has a magical place in their hearts. Thanks for all of these great ideas. We have been fortunate to see a few of them.

I love Christmas decorations and I always wanted to see the one in NYC and Leavenworth. Hopefully to make it there one day.

Christmas is such a magical time of year. We have been wanting to visit Branson during Christmas – we live in Oklahoma! Thanks for sharing this fun holiday list.

These experiences all sound so magical! I don’t even have kids but I want to visit them all! I’d really love to visit Disney at Christmas one year as I bet that would be so much fun. The Polar Express experience sounds amazing too! Thanks for the great guide!

I urge everyone to visit Washington DC for the holidays. The Capitol Christmas Tree and the National Christmas Tree are a sight to see!

I’ve always wanted to visit NYC and Leavenworth for the holidays! They just look so magical.

What a fun set of destinations to enjoy Christmas with the family. While it is nice to be at home, there is something special about travelling to spots that do Christmas in an extra special way. Coming from Canada, I always find it strange to spend Christmas in warm destinations. But Colorado might be perfect for a wintery Christmas.

Ah I’d love to visit the US one Christmas to experience some of these magical events! The Festive Alpine Escape at Vail sounds enchanting! Thanks for the wonderful guide!

15 best christmas vacations for families [from christmas enthusiasts], november 10, 2023.

family travel for christmas

A mom of six through birth and adoption, family travel specialist, self-proclaimed chocolate chip cookie connoisseur, Disney lover, and, I hope to be, your new best friend.

Christmas is clearly the favorite time in our household. My husband starts decorating on November 1st. In the past 20 years, we have found some of the best Christmas vacations for families. With kids in school, there is only a limited number of times to travel with the family, from spring break , to summer, but Christmas is my favorite time.

It is a great time to get away with the family. A time when we can reflect on the year, relax a little bit, and, of course, have fun! So, that being said with over 20 years of traveling during the holidays with kids, we are ready to break down the 15 Best Christmas vacations for families!

15 Best Christmas Vacations For Families

New york, ny.

best christmas vacation destinations

There is no better place in the world to celebrate Christmas than in the Big Apple! (besides the cold of course, but that’s part of the charm) The entire city goes through a festive transformation at the beginning of December, and there are plenty of things to do to celebrate while you are there.

You could go ice skating at the Rockefeller Center, enjoy an incredible Broadway show, take the little ones to Macy’s Santaland! , and enjoy the endless amounts of Christmas lights throughout the city. The possibilities are endless. Check out our ultimate guide to New York City with kids.

Walt Disney World

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party - Once upon a time Christmas Parade

Walt Disney World in Florida is the ultimate kid-friendly vacation! We love Disney World (and have endless tips for planning a trip ). Especially during the holidays, when the parks completely transform into a magical winter wonderland.

One of my favorite parts is going to Epcot to celebrate Christmas around the world. They ever have a beautiful candlelight processional every night.

All of the parks and resort hotels are decorated to the brim. Definitely check out Mickey’s Very Mery Christmas Party while you are there. It is one of our favorite events at Disney World. Plus, take a tour of some of the resorts as they have incredible gingerbread houses built inside each one.

Of course, there are plenty of great attractions to enjoy at Walt Disney World, including the new Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land !

Pro Tip – If you are looking for a quiet time to visit the parks and still enjoy the Holiday decorations and events, go in between Thanksgiving and Christmas Break. It is pretty slow.

Where to Stay at Disney World

Encore Resort is an excellent option for families looking to book a Walt Disney World vacation, especially for large families and groups. It is a luxury community located minutes from Orlando’s world-class attractions.

San Diego, CA

With multiple theme parks (Legoland’s Christmas is amazing), wonderful local theaters (The Grinch at The Old Globe is our fav!), plus a downtown area that is all decked out for the holidays San Diego is a wonderful choice for a warm weather Christmas vacation.

There are several amazing places to visit in San Diego for a Christmas Vacation. Here are our Favorites!

Fairmont Grand Del Mar

Christmas Vacation - Faiirmont Grand Del Mar

If there is one place that is all decked out for Christmas, it is the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The resort features a 30-foot tree that is surrounded by fireside cabanas. At night families can enjoy fireside s’mores, decadent hot cocoas, and holiday cocktails for the adults, all in these amazing cabanas.

Decadent Hot Cocoa

The Fairmont also has a visit from the big guy himself, live Christmas Music, we had a violinist traveling around playing for guests. It is truly a magical place to stay during the holidays.

San Diego Mission Bay Resort

Mission Bay Family Friendly San Diego Hotel

A newly transformed waterfront resort offering the Southern California lifestyle at your fingertips – sun, sand, and so much more.

Families will enjoy waterfront dining, endless outdoor activities, luxurious spa treatments, poolside relaxation, and – best of all – proximity to everything they could want to do in San Diego including all of the fun holiday festivities.

Maui, Hawaii

Black Sand Beach Maui

There is no better place to spend a family Christmas than on the beautiful island of Maui. Maui, is not only one of the best Christmas vacations for families it is one of the best family vacations overall. You have amazing beaches (check out black sand beach ) the beautiful road to Hana , amazing resorts, incredible snorkeling and so much more.

People don’t often think of tropical bliss when they think of Christmas. However, if you are looking to do something a bit out of the box, visiting somewhere like Maui for the festive holidays can be quite exciting.

maui luas beach luau

The islands during the holidays are absolutely beautiful and the weather is perfect. There is no doubt that your frozen friends will be jealous when they see you and your family hiking through the gorgeous Haleakala National Park , eating well at a local Luau , or even taking a helicopter tour!

best christmas vacations for families - stowe vermont

With plenty of festivities and family-friendly activities, Stowe, Vermont, is one of the best places to celebrate Christmas, especially if you want to have a classic New England experience.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Stowe, including skiing at the Stowe Mountain Resort, catching the “Ultimate Christmas Show” as Spruce Peak, or checking out the variety of town Christmas events

Park City, Utah

Park City discount lift tickets

We have visited Park City in the summer and the winter and love it year around. Ski and snowboarding trips are some of the best ways to create childhood memories.

Park City is very unique compared to most other ski locations, as it is set up for ultimate convenience and family-friendliness. Historic Main Street sits adjacent to the slopes, which is the perfect spot to unwind after a long day on the mountain.

We put Park City as one of the best Christmas Vacations for families because the town is lit up all winter long and is so family-friendly.

Solitude Mountain Ski Trip

Plus, the lodging options are absolutely endless! We Try to head out and catch a sleigh ride if you can!

Paris, France

paris itineraries

Paris has one of the most light-filled displays out of any country in Europe around the holidays. Beyond being the perfect, romantic Christmas destination, it is also a great place to visit with the whole family.

The entire city is covered with lights , and there are many Christmas-themed activities, including ice-skating rinks and the Christmas eve service at Notre Dame.

Los Angeles, C alifornia

Universal Studios Grinchmas Post Office

From the illuminated pop-up storybook land that is the LA Zoo during Christmas time to the massive tree lighting party in Santa Monica, there are plenty of fun ways to celebrate a snow-less Christmas in Los Angeles!

While you’re there, make sure to visit the Grinchmas at Universal Studios and enjoy the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to see its magical transformation during the special season.

Yosemite, Ca

You will jump for joy if you visit Yosemite in the winter. It's great to see everything covered in snow and the waterfalls (like this one- Bridalveil) flowing.

Yosemite is one of the most beautiful places in the United States as it is. However, there is nothing compared to seeing the massive pine trees and rocky mountains covered in snow.

For a more natural Christmas getaway, we recommend heading out to Yosemite. You can enjoy the outdoor skating rinks in the Village, go skiing at the Badger Pass Ski Area , or take a picturesque sleigh ride!

Branson, Missouri

branson missouri best christmas vacation for families

You won’t find a more charming place to celebrate Christmas than good ol’ Branson, Missouri. If you are your family are looking for an old-timey feel, we highly recommend heading out that way.

Enjoy the Sheperd of the Hills Trail of Lights , Branson’s longest-running drive-thru light show, and make sure to check out one or more of the hundred Branson Christmas shows in one of the FIFTY theatres!

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs Bucketlist

Steamboat Springs is an adorable Ski town. It is not as busy as other ski town so it is perfect for travelers looking for a quieter place to enjoy the slopes.

Steamboat sits on the northerly side of Colorado and is home to a beautiful little mountain town and some of the most scenic views and the softest snow you will ever experience (They call it the champagne of snow)

Those who are feeling adventurous might consider taking a dog sledding adventure through the snow. (It’s incredible) Check out my Ultimate Guide to Steamboat Springs here.

El Paso, TX

El Paso

El Paso Texas is home to a beautiful Christmas Fair that started over 40 years ago. They also host several other exciting events including WinterFest, Luminarias (gorgeous traditional Christmas lanterns), Tamaladas where you can find the best Mexican tamales and more!

Hotel Paso del Norte

For lodging our choice is the newly renovated Hotel Paso del Norte, Autograph Collection . This luxury hotel just completed a multi-million-dollar renovation and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

You will enjoy the panoramic views of the Franklin Mountains, take a dip in the rooftop pool, and delight in the impeccable architecture.

Jackson Hole, Wy oming

Riding the Tram at Jackson Hole e1559110944932

According to County Living magazine, Jackson Hole is among the 20 Best Small Towns for Christmas. There is plenty to do, from Santa sightings to horse-drawn sleigh rides to a wide variety of Christmas-themed shows at the Jackson Hole Playhouse.

Of course, you can’t forget about the legendary slopes at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , either.

Jackson Hole is definitely a fun place for families to visit this holiday season.

London, England

3 days in london

London is a lot like New York in that it is tons of fun throughout the year, though something quite extraordinary happens near Christmas time. There are a ton of things to do in London with the kids and during Christmas there is even more.

The streets are lined with Christmas decorations, the outdoor ice rinks are spread across the city, and there are plenty of great events to catch, including the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland.

Frankfurt, Germany

best christmas vacations for families - Frankfurt Germany

There is nothing quite like celebrating Christmas in Frankfurt. With the amazing German Christmas Markets to the jaw-dropping Tollwood Winter Festival , the city offers an endless stream of Christmas-themed activities.

Grand Canyon, Arizona (Polar Express)

Catal Breakfast with Santa

We recommend taking the Grand Canyon’s Polar express through Williams, AZ’s nighttime wilderness, for an exceptional Christmas vacation. You’ll get to experience the beauty of the “North Pole” and watch as your children get to experience their wildest dreams!

The tour is around 90 minutes long and is fantastic! Plus, you get to enjoy the beauty of the Grand Canyon in winter when you’re done.

Families looking to escape the cooler temperatures will delight in the warm weather found in Mexico.

Hacienda Encantada (Cabo San Lucas)

12 Best Christmas Vacations for Families 2019

family travel for christmas

Nov 15, 2017

See recent posts by Courtney Elko

From ice skating and sleigh rides to light displays and holiday markets , the holiday season is full of festive ways to escape, near and far. So, if you’ve tired of tradition or want something extra special this holiday season, book one of these great Christmas vacations for families.

1. New York City

It’s true—there’s no better place to spend Christmas than New York City ! The city is even more magical during the holiday season. There’s ice skating at Bryant Park and Central Park (and other parks across the city); the famous Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center; and the Rockettes at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Show. The department store windows come to life with over-the-top festive scenes, as do holiday displays across the city.

The holiday season kicks off with the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and comes to a grand finale when the New Year’s Eve ball drops in Times Square, making NYC one of the best Christmas vacations for families.

Recommended Hotel: The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park

2. Branson, MO

The Ozark Mountains of Branson, Missouri , put on quite the show for families of all ages. Branson gets in the holiday spirit with numerous live singing and dancing performances, parades, light shows and tours, where families can drive through hundreds of light displays. There is even a Christmas Tree Trail where giant trees are decorated and on display throughout Branson. (You won’t find any Charlie Brown trees here!)

But it’s at Silver Dollar City that families will discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Ozarks. An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City (from early November through January 1) is one of the most magical Christmas festivals in the nation. The entire park—every inch of it—is lit with millions of lights (assembling them begins in October!) and there is a five-story special effects Christmas tree in the center of the park.

Head to Branson before December 25 and get some shopping done, too. The handcrafted goods, such as pottery and blown glass, make excellent and unique gifts. Branson Landing and the outlet center are also great for holiday shopping.

3. Copenhagen, Denmark

European holiday markets are fun to experience on a family vacation. But Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens is the number one Christmas must in the city, and the locals can’t get enough of the tradition. Decorations, handmade gifts, holiday food and drink, lots of fun rides for the kids and of course, Santa, are part of the Tivoli Gardens experience from mid-November through December. This true Nordic Christmas experience includes snow-covered trees, real reindeer, twinkling Christmas lights and beautifully decorated wooden houses.

Tivoli Gardens is not the only Christmas market to explore in Copenhagen , either. Several others can be found throughout the city, including one at the renaissance Kronborg Castle and a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale-themed market.

Recommended Hotel: Tivoli Hotel

4. Leavenworth, WA

Can’t make it to Europe for your Christmas vacation with the family? Experience a piece of Germany in Washington State! Leavenworth, Washington, is a Bavarian-themed town about two hours from Seattle. Families will feel like they’ve entered the inside of a snowglobe when visiting at Christmas time. The Village of Lights is bright with more than 500,00 lights sparkling from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day weekend. Families will love the Christkindlmarkt, the Christmas Lighting Festival, live music and concerts, and the Bavarian Ice Festival in January.

Recommended Hotel:   Bavarian Lodge

5. Seneca Falls, NY

In New York’s Finger Lakes region lies the real Bedford Falls, which was the inspiration for It’s a Wonderful Life . Seneca Falls knows how to ring in the season with its Christmas bells on. There is a four-day It’s a Wonderful Life  Festival each December. The festival includes horse-drawn carriage rides, a Christmas tree lighting, gingerbread house, light displays, musical concerts and even visits with some of the original cast members! The movie plays in town, of course, and there’s a Bailey’s Park Vendor Village for finding that perfect gift.

Recommended Hotel: Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel

6. Jackson Hole, WY

You’ll want to book this Christmas vacation for your family early because the crowds descend on Jackson Hole during the holiday season—with good reason. You’re practically guaranteed a white Christmas, as Jackson Hole averages 400 inches of snow per year!  The slopes are open on Christmas Day, too, so if Santa happens to deliver a new snowboard or set of skis , you can test them out immediately. Snowmobiling, sledding, tubing, dog sledding and sleigh rides are a few of the other winter sports that await families in this festive vacation destination. The town square is decorated for the season and there are plenty of opportunities to drink hot chocolate and roast marshmallows or chestnuts over an open fire.

Recommended Hotel: Amangani

7. Disney World, FL

Of course  Disney knows how to do Christmas vacations for families! The Disney Christmas decor fully decks the halls at all the parks, complete with millions of lights, joyful music and even “snow”! Your kids will love Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, where the guy in the red suit and the giant mouse himself say hello, along with parades, light and fireworks shows. Even Cinderella’s Castle transforms into a Frozen ice palace! At Epcot, the family can learn how different cultures and countries celebrate the holidays, and it’s a full-on feast of a holiday dessert party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM event. Expect to see large crowds at the parks around the holiday season, when children are out of school.

Recommended Hotel: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

8. Stowe, VT

If it’s holiday music that warms your gingerbread house during the holiday season, pack your favorite sheet music and head to Stowe, Vermont , for a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. After leaving Austria and touring the United States as the Trapp Family Singers, the von Trapps eventually settled in Stowe and opened a lodge that you can visit for your Christmas family vacation. Throughout December, the lodge offers families a variety of festive activities like a holiday wreath workshop, sugar maple tours, cooking and baking classes, rocking climbing, and swimming. A classic movie (including The Sound of Music , of course), is shown nightly, and skiing is only 15 minutes away. But a few of your favorite things while staying at the lodge will be the Christmas Eve tradition of caroling with the von Trapps. The hills may actually come alive as your family belts out Christmas carols alongside the actual von Trapp family! On Christmas Day, stay in your holiday pajamas and enjoy a Christmas movie marathon at the lodge.

Recommended Hotel: Trapp Family Lodge

9. Oahu, HI

Santa ditches his sleigh for an outrigger canoe in Hawaii! Elaborate sand sculptures are crafted instead of snowmen, and palm trees twinkle with lights, making Oahu  one of the best Christmas beach vacations for families. While Christmas in Hawaii means beach days rather than snow-capped mountains, all the traditions remain the same, with caroling, tree trimming, hot cocoa and cookies. Don’t worry if your Christmas wish is to play in the snow, either—you’ll be able to find man-made snow and ice! Who wouldn’t want to ice skate outside in shorts and a T-shirt ?!

Recommended Hotel: Sheraton Waikiki

10. Chicago

Chicago makes for a festive Christmas vacation for families, and stacks up nicely next to New York City. The giant Christmas tree lighting, parade and fireworks display lights up the start of the season as the parade marches down the Magnificent Mile the weekend before Thanksgiving. Families can enjoy the open-air Christkindlmarket, free ice skating at the outdoor rink at Millennium Park, indoor amusement rides at Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier, caroling in front of “The Beach,” and the Macy’s seasonal window displays.

Recommended Hotel: Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel

11. Lake Louise, Canada

For a Canadian Christmas, visit Lake Louise in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Christmas on Lake Louise is the epitome of a family Christmas card. Tip: Take your family holiday card photos during your Christmas vacation so you can mail it out next year! Families can ice skate on the lake and stop at the Ice Bar for some hot chocolate or wine and create a sugar pop treat out of hot maple syrup and snow. Snowshoeing, skiing, sleigh rides, all-day board game tournaments and evening gatherings around the campfire to roast marshmallows are just a few of the activities you’ll enjoy during a Christmas vacation in Lake Louise.

Recommended Hotel: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

12. National Harbor, MD

Located on the Potomac River in Maryland, National Harbor sits in the shadow of Washington, D.C., but offers an epic Christmas vacation for families. The famous ICE! Exhibit is held in National Harbor at the Gaylord National Resort , one of the most magical holiday hotels in the U.S. This indoor ice experience is filled with giant ice sculptures crafted in a different theme each year. It’s only 9 degrees inside (brrrr!),  but the kids won’t even notice when they’re sliding down the giant multi-story ice slides! There is also pajama story time in the Christmas Village, a Silent Disco on an indoor ice skating rink, and a Cirque du Soleil show that’s perfect for kids.   New this year at the Gaylord National Resort is an outdoor Winter Square where lights and decorations sparkle and an outdoor ice skating rink and there is an ugly sweater tavern for the adults! After the chilly experience, families can walk along the harborfront, ride the carousel or soar high above the river on the Capital Wheel Ferris Wheel.

Recommended Hotel : Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center

There's a reason London is front and center in so many Christmas movies: it positively glows during the holidays. Sprawling Hyde Park features an outdoor Winter Wonderland, including scores of rides, an ice rink, and a circus.

WHERE TO STAY: Close to the famed Christmas markets and the iconic Harrods lights is the charming 11 Cadogan Gardens . Otherwise, while the rooms tend to be small, Citizen M hotels offer great, affordable accommodations and are located throughout the city. Fancy a quaint Christmas vacation for families in the countryside? Consider visiting the royally-approved Berkshires, only 45 minutes but a world away from downtown London. Stay at festive and family-friendly Coworth Park , where Prince Harry slept the night before his marriage to Duchess Meghan, the Queen has taken tea, Duchess Kate has watched polo, and Christmas activities abound. Or for an old-fashioned cozy Christmas, complete with a decadent afternoon tea by roaring fires, carolers, and plenty of festive libations, consider a short trip to West Sussex for a stay at the Spread Eagle (one of England's oldest coaching inns) or the charming and tranquil Ockenden Manor. While both are on the pricier side, they'll make you feel like you've stepped into the The Crown .

Las Vegas, Nevada

Sin City is less sin and more sensational at the holidays, when it transforms into a festive wonderland that both singles and couples will love. Visual extravaganzas include the 12 foot x 7 foot x 13 foot edible Gingerbread House at ARIA—complete with lights, holiday pastries, and hot chocolate—and the Bellagio's famous yearly Holiday Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. This season's display includes a 42-foot tall holiday tree, carnation polar bears, giant ornaments, and elves. Other highlights include the Glittering Lights drive-through at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, downtown's new Circa Resort & Casino, and AREA15, a new multi-purpose experiential entertainment complex.

WHERE TO STAY: Located in the center of The Strip, ARIA Resort and Casino has an enviable location walking distance from numerous resorts, tram access, family- and tech-friendly rooms and suites, and hot spot restaurants like Catch, Jean-Georges Steakhouse, and Carbone.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Obama-favorite getaway Martha's Vineyard enjoys a yearly must-visit festive celebration called Christmas in Edgartown, decking out the former whaling village in lights and cheer. Events include the Edgartown Lighthouse lighting, a Christmas parade, caroling, and horse and carriage rides. And, of course, it wouldn't be Christmas in Massachusetts without a Chowder Festival.

WHERE TO STAY: The landmark Harbor View Hotel has presided over Martha's Vineyard for 120 years. Recently resorted and redesigned, the historic stay is true to its name with sweeping views of the harbor, and comfortable, well-appointed rooms.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Known as Christmas City, USA, and easily one of the country's most festive cities, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania shines during the holidays. Guests can enjoy horse drawn carriage rides, see the country's only live advent calendar, explore the German-inspired Christkindlmarket and Weihnachtsmarkt, and view mini nativity scenes known as putzes.

WHERE TO STAY: Historic Hotel Bethlehem features more than 35,000 Christmas lights on dozens of trees, 36 wreaths, two life-size nutcrackers, and a gingerbread house in the fashion of the hotel itself.

Palos Verdes, California

Overlooking LA sits its best-kept secret, the Palos Verdes Peninsul—only half an hour from downtown, but with the worlds-away feeling of the Italian or the French Riviera. Nearby Christmas events in this cliffside escape include the Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights in Torrance, the Holiday Parade of Lights, and a Candlelight Christmas Concert at Wayfarer's Chapel, the so-called "Glass Church" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's son.

WHERE TO STAY: Destination resort Terranea overlooks the Pacific Ocean with more than 360 rooms, suites, bungalows, casitas, and villas—many with ocean views—and nine dining options spread over 102 acres. During the holidays, guests can celebrate Hanukkah dinner at catalina kitchen, enjoy a five-course Christmas feast at marsel, decorate a gingerbread house, and enjoy crafting and music during the annual tree lighting ceremony.

Sea Island, Georgia

For a Southern-style Christmas, look no further than the luxurious barrier island of Sea Island, Georgia. A charming coastal retreat, Sea Island is supremely family-friendly and chockablock with events and celebrations at Christmastime. Visitors can expect merrymaking like storytime with Santa's elves, a life-size gingerbread cottage, a reindog parade and children's Christmas party at the Beach Club, and family-style Christmas Eve dinner in the Cloister Ballroom.

WHERE TO STAY: The Cloister at Sea Island is an elegant retreat with the very best of Southern hospitality, featuring Georgia's only Forbes Five Star restaurant, a beach club with five miles of private beach, scores of activities like a hawk walk and clay pigeon shooting. Golf lovers can opt for the Lodge at Sea Island, the resort’s 43-room English-style manor which puts you up close and personal with the world-renowned pros.

A holiday trip makes a great gift for the entire family. Hotels, resorts and theme parks sparkle with Christmas lights, and offer lots of fun activities you can do together. And even if you choose a vacation spot without a chimney, don’t worry. At this magical time of year, Santa can find you anywhere.

Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, Nashville, Tennessee

Book by Nov. 18 for a discount on Gaylord Opryland Resort 's Country Christmas package , offered on select dates in November and December. Billed as one of the most "Christmassy destinations in the country," the resort is offering special attractions like a gingerbread decorating corner, a Build-A-Bear Workshop, a General Jackson Showboat holiday cruise and much more. ICE! , a popular, annual attraction, opens Nov. 9 to Jan. 1. It uses over two million pounds of ice, hand-carved by Chinese artisans, to depict scenes from a different Christmas classic each year. Visitors can walk through this frosty winter wonderland, but bring your coats and mittens; it’s kept at 9 degrees F. Don’t miss the Nativity scene, also carved in ice, and glide down one of four, two-story-tall ice slides. There’s more to do, including snow tubing and ice skating. Adults 21 years or older can warm up later at the bar with specialty drinks like the Jolly Mint or Merry Margarita.

The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, Montana

Come to The Resort at Paws Up for an old-fashioned tree-trimming party, a gingerbread house contest, cookie decorating, dog sledding or a horse-drawn sleigh ride. This luxury resort is about 35 minutes from Missoula, in Blackfoot Valley, and sits on a 37,000-acre working cattle ranch. Christmas packages run for five nights and include meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Santa shows up, of course, at a festive party on Christmas Eve. Elegant vacation homes and luxury tents are also available, but inquire about availability.

Great Wolf Lodge Snowland Celebration, Multiple Locations

Snowland celebrations begin at Great Wolf Lodges across the U.S. on Nov. 24 (check your desired location for end dates). Each will have indoor snow showers (the flakes melt as they land in the lodges' water park features, kept at a balmy 84 degrees F). Kids can also enjoy visits from Santa, Polar Wolf Walks (educational walks to learn about wild animals), and fun things to do at North Pole University, where they'll earn a "Snowploma." Book early to reserve a Snowland Suite; a limited number are available. Each is furnished with a decorated Christmas tree, twinkling lights and other decorations. At bedtime, lodge mascots like Violet the Wolf or Wiley stop by with milk and cookies to tuck in the little ones. This year, each lodge will feature a life-size, dine-in gingerbread house. You can’t eat the iced and candied houses themselves, although each one is made from 600 pounds of dough and 1,320 pounds of sugar. But you can dine inside them, and 100 percent of proceeds will go to benefit Ronald McDonald Houses .

Hershey Park, Hershey, Pennsylvania

A trip to Hershey Park sweetens the season with cookie workshops, holiday-themed roller-coaster rides and more festive activities. Kids can share their Christmas wishes with Santa and meet his nine live reindeer, including Rudolph. Later, hop in the family car and drive through two miles of wooded trails to experience Hershey’s "Sweet Lights," a festive display of over 200,000 lights that "dance" to popular Christmas tunes. Christmas Candylane Packages are available on select dates. Make reservations for your children to have breakfast or lunch with Santa on a Saturday or Sunday from Nov. 24 through Dec. 23. See the website for dates, times and more details.

Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia

Step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg, and let the kids discover how early colonists celebrated the season. Grand Illumination takes place on Dec. 2; this 18th-century custom is a spectacular display of fireworks and the firing of guns. Join carolers at the Courthouse, catch a candlelit concert at the Governor’s Palace, warm up with hot cider after a spin on the ice skating rink, or share a holiday feast and other events with the whole family. Click on the calendar for a full list of things to see and do.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada

Overlook the glittering Vegas strip from the ice rink at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas . It’s actually the resort’s Boulevard Pool, frozen into more than 4,200 square feet of ice from Nov. 21 through Jan. 6. See the website for a "forecast" (actually, a schedule) of light snow showers; they occur every 30 minutes on select days. When you get chilly, toast marshmallows for s’mores at an outdoor pit. Adults can indulge in holiday-themed cocktails like The Griswold, Naughty or Nice?, Scrooged and Egg Noggy Nog.

Grand Wailea, Wailea, Maui, Hawaii

There may be a shortage of chimneys on Maui, but Santa still shows up, riding in a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe. In December, children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui will throw the switch for the Grand Wailea 's 25-foot Christmas tree. It will sparkle along with more than eight miles of white lights in the monkeypod trees lining the resort's driveway. The theme for December is "'Tis the Season of Aloha," and the Club children will build a gingerbread village to celebrate. Of course, you'll also want to hit the beach to paddleboard, kayak and take in more sun and fun.

The Roosevelt, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana

The kids will be awed—and so will you—when you step into The Roosevelt 's block-long lobby, decorated with 60,000 sparking lights, 46 Christmas trees, 22 birch trees, and 30-feet of garland. Reserve your spot early for the Teddy Bear Tea , where Mr. and Mrs. Claus will stop by as the kids enjoy Christmas goodies and the adults toast with Champagne. Holiday brunch is a tradition at the Roosevelt, with a Christmas Day feast that includes traditional breakfast fare as well as Louisiana specialties like crabmeat eggs Benedict and shrimp and mirliton au gratin. (Don’t worry, parents of picky eaters. There are kid-friendly dishes, too.) Adults, drop by the lounge or bar for a chilled Mrs. Claus’ Cookie Cocktail or Cajun Hot Buttered Rum. Ask about special Papa Noel rates (based on availability) when you book.
