30 ways to travel with jewelry and keep it all organized.

' src=

Traveling with jewelry is a nice way to stay stylish while traveling and accessorize your look without bringing dozens of outfits. But how do you keep it all organized without opening your bag to find a big, tangled mess?

We’ve scoured the Internet for the best hacks for traveling with jewelry and some offbeat ways to travel with necklaces, earrings, rings, and bracelets. Best of all, most of these don’t require you to buy anything, as a number can be found around your house.

Ways to Keep Your Jewelry Organized in Luggage

Mint tins for rings and earrings

1. Mint tin: Save those Altoids or Tic Tacs containers after you are done with them! They make for a great container for jewelry, especially when you add a cotton ball to protect them.

2. Hard sided jewelry cases: While they take up more room, cases like Caracaise, which looks like a briefcase with foam cushioning, and smaller versions with compartments for earrings, fully protect your items. Something like this on Amazon would work.

3. Drawstring jewelry cases: Another type of jewelry case is the pouch, which you can buy or make yourself . This allows you to place all of your items on a circular piece of fabric that has strings that pull it into a pouch. It’s better suited for everything but necklaces.

4. O-Rings: Metal ring clips that are used for crafts and school projects can also be used for rings, bracelets and necklaces. Simply open it, slip them on, and pack! See these on Amazon .

Use straws to keep your necklaces from tangling.

5. Drinking straws: Prevent your necklaces from getting tangled. Simply thread one side of the chain through a plastic straw and attach at the other end. It keeps one side rigid and tangle-free.

6. Pill containers: Do you have a days of the week pill organizer? Use it to separate rings and earrings on-the-go. You can use one you have at home or purchase from your local pharmacy for around $5.

7. Travel toiletry containers: Use those extra GoTubbs , snack cups and other travel containers to store small jewelry items. They’re ideal for rings and earrings that won’t be affected by tangling.

8. Cling Wrap: Ideal for necklaces, you can prevent tangling by lying the items out on one piece of the “ Press N Seal ” style and pressing them together, making sure to give space between them. You should be able to find it easily at the grocery store, but standard cling wrap will also work if you roll it.

travel jewelry roll

9. Jewelry rolls: Organize your items through zippered compartments and a large panel that folds over and ties to keep from getting tangled. Buy online or make your own using these instructions . They also take up little room since they lie flat.

10. Ziploc bags : If you have plenty of bags, place one item in each bag with end of the necklace zipped in the top. Rings and earrings can be placed into bags together.

11. Washcloth and rubber bands: I love this idea from Pinterest about how to make your own jewelry roll without buying or sewing anything. Simply place your necklaces apart on a washcloth, roll them lengthwise and fold in half, adding rubber bands to each end to keep them secure.

12. Erasers: Keep the backs to your stud earrings from getting lost in transit by sticking them in a simple eraser leftover from your school days.

bead organizers for jewelry

13. Craft store bead organizer or fishing tackle container: These are basically the same but are marketed differently. Either way, seek out a clear plastic container with removable compartments. That way, you can change them out for your specific items.

14. Travel soap dish: Store bracelets, earrings, and rings in a travel soap dish that you can pick up at just about any store. It can protect everything and keep it in one place.

15. Contacts case : These work for almost everything, specifically small earrings. Use a container you no longer have a use for.

16. Styrofoam plate: Simply stick your earrings through the plate, which is best for studs and dangling earrings. Then you can throw it in your suitcase, surrounded by other things.

carabiners work well for rings

17. Carabiners : You really can use them for everything! These cheap items can be used for bracelets or even necklaces by simply clipping them on.

18. Toilet paper roll: Once you’ve used it all, loop your bracelets around it and then strand your necklaces through the tube itself. Place on top of your suitcase for the best results.

19. Baseball card holders : Remember those plastic divider pages you’d use to protect baseball cards or other collectibles? They also are great for separating your jewelry. Place each item in its own pocket.

20. Glasses case: Once you’ve grown out of a pair of glasses, use your glasses or sunglasses case for bracelets, earrings, and smaller items.

Old buttons are small and easy to pack with earrings.

21. Buttons: Keep those earring backs safe by threading them through those extra buttons you’ve been saving from every shirt.

22. Safety pins: Loop your hoops or dainty necklaces through a safety pin like you would with the carabiner.

23. Zippered pouches: You can buy these in satin varieties in Asia or at stores like the Container Store in the US. Small pouches of any variety will do for bracelets and earrings.

24. Socks : A member of our HPLWorld community recommended using socks for rings. You can place items inside since you’ll already be packing them.

empty lip balm tubes hold jewelry

25. Empty lip balm container: This one is specific to the Eos brand , but once you’ve used all the lip balm, they make a great earring container. Pop them in your purse for safekeeping!

26. Hanging jewelry cases: Like jewelry rolls, these toiletry and cosmetic cases can also be used for jewelry. It allows you to keep organized while being able to see everything. Check this one out on Amazon.

27. Cupcake liners: Another recommended placing earrings in cupcake liners, either paper or foil, and then wrapping in foil or another item to keep everything in place.

28. Index cards: Push backs of earrings through or loop bracelets and necklaces around them.

Use business or playing cards to keep jewelry organized.

29. Business or playing cards: Like with index cards, you can organize necklaces by placing two small cuts in cards to wrap around tightly and keep secure.

30. Wine corks: Similar to erasers, use wine corks for earring backs.

Extra Tips for Traveling with Jewelry

We’ve mentioned it briefly in the intro, but choosing the right jewelry can be an easy way to take your outfit from day to night. Here are some extra tips to consider:

1) Pack a statement necklace. Something bold will take the attention off the clothing underneath, and it will trick you into feeling like you’re wearing a completely new outfit. Plus statement necklaces can dress up the most simple ensembles! (See our professional packing list for more tips.)

2) Pack cheap jewelry. It goes without saying that you should never pack any jewelry that you’d be upset with losing or having stolen.

How to Take Care of Jewelry While Traveling

On the short-list of items that require special care when traveling, jewelry is somewhere close to the top. Their precious metals and delicate settings are just a few of the characteristics that make them more susceptible to damage both while en route and once you arrive at your destination. Whether you’re traipsing around a tropical island and need to protect your pieces from tarnishing or just trying to keep them clean after a long day of traveling through an airport, where they could be exposed to bacteria or accidental bangs and bends, it’s best to stay prepared.

Luckily, there are a myriad of jewelry care tips and tricks to protect your pieces while you’re away from home—we’ve consulted with experts in the field to find out their favorites.

  • How to prevent tarnishing
  • How to protect your jewelry
  • How to safely pack your jewelry
  • How to clean your jewelry

What jewelry to bring on vacation

How to prevent tarnishing on vacation.

According to Jacqueline Kim, the account director at consulting firm DEH Jewelry Solutions , tarnishing occurs primarily due to chemical reactions between metals and elements in the environment, such as oxygen. “Metals like silver, copper, and also brass are particularly susceptible to tarnishing because they react with sulfur compounds present in air and water to form sulfides, leading to discoloration and dullness over time,” Kim says. “This process is accelerated in humid or acidic environments.”

On vacation, this can look like sitting by the pool at a tropical resort or hiking in the desert where sweating and exposure to chlorine or saltwater is imminent. But in order to prevent tarnishing and discoloration from happening, it’s important to keep your pieces as clean as possible and tucked away when not in use to minimize oxidation.

How to protect your jewelry while traveling

Aside from the oxidation and tarnishing of your pieces, there are other risks that come with bringing jewelry on a trip: Chains can get tangled up, which can lead to knots or broken links, and abrasions might come from the precious metals clinking together or tiny grains of sand and gravel scratching the otherwise smooth surface. Atara Lev, the head of design at Material Good , also points out that one should be cautious of sporting their favorite rings on travel days in particular, since you’ll likely be handling and lifting baggage, which can cause the metal or settings from bending.

This is also one of the reasons why she suggests not wearing your jewelry to the hotel gym —especially rings. “So many types of workouts involve using our hands in some capacity,” Lev says. “Rings are made of precious metals and have the ability to bend, crack open, or snap apart, depending on the thickness of the piece. It’s so easily avoidable.” It’s also worth mentioning that running and other high-cardio workouts tend to make your body swell, which can make getting rings off difficult and in more severe cases, cut off your circulation.

How to safely pack jewelry on vacation

Our experts agree that properly storing jewelry when it’s not in use avoids exposure to harsh chemicals, perfumes, cosmetics, and any other damage. This means securing your pieces in air-tight containers and soft pouches made from fabrics like velvet, suede, or leather. Calpak’s travel jewelry case is a great option—it has a drawstring compartment and five slit pockets that can comfortably fit bangles and statement earrings. For smaller studs and huggies, it features a 28-hole earring card to keep each style on full display, as well as five snap tabs to keep your necklaces, chain bracelets, and rings secure. For those who don’t want to commit to a full-fledged organizer, Ziplocs or Stasher bags will do, so long as you're not packing pieces that could get tangled up.

How to clean jewelry on vacation

There are a few different options when it comes to cleaning your jewelry on (or after) a trip. If you want something a bit more tailored to high-end pieces, Jessica Kiraly , a PR luminary in the high jewelry industry with more than a decade of experience in the field, calls Diamond Drunk a luxe cleaning experience for fine jewelry that you can take with you on the go. Simply submerge pieces into a prepackaged detox solution before going to bed, then wake up to sparkling clean pieces. (The brand also suggests a ‘Quickie Dip’ option, which means dunking your jewelry for a few minutes before wiping them clean. This is particularly beneficial for more delicate items like rubies, sapphires, and solid gold watches.)

“For delicate or porous gemstones, such as pearls, coral, emeralds, opals, it's best to avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners,” Kim says. “Opt for a gentle wipe with a damp cloth instead.”

Lev, however, drops her pieces in a hotel room glass cup filled with warm soapy water while she’s getting ready, taking a soft-bristle toothbrush to rid the piece of any debris and oils that have accumulated throughout the day.

In terms of the types of jewelry that should be brought along on your travels, believe it or not, there is a right and wrong answer. Pieces made from materials like copper or nickel are susceptible to oxidation and tarnishing if exposed to moisture. So it’s best to stick with stainless steel, solid gold, platinum, and titanium items, especially if you’re looking to wear your favorite pieces while you’re away.

“While they have a higher price tag than gold plated, vermeil, or sterling silver pieces, they are going to withstand the elements (and daily life) much better because of their purity and durability,” Kiraly says.

“Diamonds are also another incredibly durable material,” Kiraly says. “In fact, they rate as a 10 on the Mohs scale , a gemstone measurement system used to rate the hardness of a material.”

While they’re much more durable and stable than an opal or an emerald, you still ought to proceed with caution when traveling with them. Lev says pieces with gemstones are more likely to fall apart while on vacation, given that the delicate prong settings can easily be damaged if not properly cared for. She suggests leaving your most valuable items at home if you can help it.

Alternatively, jewelry made from glass beads is a great option. This kind of style is quite easy to clean if tarnishing occurs, and generally has a low-stakes price point that means you won’t have to put pieces in the safe whenever you leave the room.

If you take Kiraly’s advice and decide to leave your precious pieces at home, ahead is a curated selection of travel-friendly jewelry—all of which are anti-tarnish or designed to be waterproof—to consider bringing along instead.

In This Blog

It’s the time of year when many of us travel to visit family and friends to share the holidays. Whether you’re traveling on a flight, taking a road trip , traveling on a bus, taking a train or going on a cruise, y ou may be looking to bring some of your favorite fine jewelry pieces along.

We’ve curated some of our favorite tips and tricks for traveling with jewelry. Discover secrets on how to pack jewelry for travel, suggestions for which pieces to bring on your trip and advice on how to keep your jewelry safe when you’re traveling.

Choosing Travel Jewelry Pieces

Packing your favorite women’s and men’s jewelry for your upcoming trip? It’s best to bring along items that are durable, such as 14k gold jewelry , platinum jewelry , silver jewelry or lab grown diamond jewelry . These materials are sturdy, bringing beautiful style no matter how far you’re taking them.

Keep safety in mind when choosing which pieces to bring on a trip. Certain journeys and destinations may not be best for bringing your favorite fine jewelry along. In these instances, costume styles are often the best choice.

How to Pack Jewelry

travel packing jewelry

There are several ways to pack your jewelry, from specialized cases to more DIY approaches. Wh en packing your jewelry, regardless of which technique you choose, keeping things secure should be your main goal. This will ensure that you don’t lose any items during your travels, along with helping to prevent tangling.

When packing jewelry, you should:

  • Use specialized storage, like a jewelry travel case.
  • Secure chains on necklaces and bracelets to avoid tangling.
  • Keep earring pairs together.
  • Separate fragile pieces, such as opals, from the rest of your jewelry.
  • Put similar materials together.
  • Use tissue, straws or tape to secure thinner pieces.

Some jewelry items, such as engagement rings , are worn throughout the whole trip and don’t need to be put in a travel jewelry case. If you’re packing an engagement ring in your luggage because you’re proposing on your trip, make sure to keep the ring in its original box and secure it in a locked section of your carry-on bag.

Types of Travel Jewelry Cases

A travel jewelry case can help you keep your pieces organized, secured and safe while you’re headed to your destination. Many cases have specialized storage s ections for earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets. You can choose from smaller storage cases for a small selection, or a larger case that can fit multiple styles together.

Pearl and diamond jewelry in a travel jewelry case.

It’s best to choose the case that fits your collection. For people traveling with mainly bracelets or necklaces , this may look like a case with loops that secure the full length of each piece to prevent tangling. For those traveling with more rings or earrings , the right travel case is one with tightly packed rolls that can secure a set of dangling earrings or several rings.

Most people who are traveling with jewelry choose to use a specialized jewelry travel case, with designs for all price points readily available online. Other people prefer to use the original packaging for their jewelry, which is especially helpful in instances where only one or two pieces are brought on a trip.

DIY Jewelry Packing Hacks

While travel jewelry cases are the most popular fit for packing your jewelry, there are also DIY options that can help you bring your favorite pieces along. Pill cases, cardboard tubes, business cards, tins, straws and carabiners are all solutions for packing your jewelry.

You can count on virtually anything for earring storage when traveling. Push your favorite pairs into an eraser to keep them all in one place. To transport your earrings with their backings, pierce your sets through a business card or piece of construction paper to keep them together. Smaller studs can also be put in pill organizers or metal tins for easy travel storage.

Necklaces and Bracelets

Pendant and chain necklaces require a little more planning if you’re taking the DIY route to packing them for travel. Keep your focus on preventing tangling so you can enjoy your jewelry at your destination. To keep chains from tangling, loop each necklace or bracelet through a straw and secure the clasp closed.

You can also use a cardboard tube, such as one from a paper towel or toilet paper roll, to keep necklaces and bracelets organized when traveling. Loop necklaces through the length of the tube and wrap bracelets around the width.

Taking a DIY approach to organizing your rings while traveling? Use small storage such as pill organizers, tins or carabiners to keep them in order. Designs in similar metals can be stored together, but more fragile styles such as cocktail rings should be kept on their own.

Another adds, “I take one long silver chain and then two to four (depending on the length of my trip) different pendants. One necklace offers various looks without taking up a lot of space. I also typically take three pair of earrings, including the studs I wear on the plane.”

One reader has a great tip if you’re a fan of jewelry. She says, “I’m a jewelry girl. I can’t seem to make scarves work for me. But I’ve learned to pare down on jewelry, too. Usually I only need one silver pair and one gold pair of earrings. I also take silver or mixed metal bracelets. I like to wear one on each wrist, plus a watch that goes with it all. Lastly, I have two necklaces that work with all my tops. Depending upon where we are going, I might swap out my good rings for fabulous fakes.”

Most readers recommend leaving behind any expensive or valuable jewelry, just in case it gets lost, broken, or stolen. One reader says, “I don’t want to risk the good stuff being lost or stolen, so I take a few simple gold chains and rings.”

Another reader says, “I take fun inexpensive costume jewelry to jazz up my ensembles,” while another adds, “I never bring expensive jewelry. I’ll never forget the poor girl who was on her honeymoon in Mexico who went swimming and lost her diamond ring in the pool. She was devastated. I never bring anything I can’t live without.”

I usually pick basic jewelry that can be worn with different outfits. I don’t bring anything expensive that I cannot easily replace. I would be heartbroken if something of sentimental value was lost. That being said, I usually buy a piece of jewelry while I’m traveling. Lightweight souvenir that reminds me of my travels when I wear them. Also, scarves can change the look of an outfit without changing your jewelry. Pick one that has the colors of your travel outfits. Happy traveling!

Being in the diamond business all my life I can agree that the sparkle of jewelry truly matters in making a statement. It can be difficult to feel comfortable traveling with our jewelry. I enjoy the variety in these travel cases. It steps outside of your classic jewelry box while still offering protection. Creating a traveling capsule case is a great suggestion.

Best Ways to Pack and Organize Jewelry for Travel

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

When traveling, not only do you have to figure out how to safely pack your clothing, toiletries, and other essentials, like your  passport . You also want to bring jewelry and other accessories.

So, what's the best way to travel with jewelry? Should you pack it in your checked baggage or in your carry-on? And how do you keep your necklaces from tangling? Can you wear jewelry through airport security? What will set off metal detectors?

Here is everything you need to know to pack and travel with your jewelry:

What jewelry can you wear through airport security?

You can wear jewelry while traveling, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the type of metal. Sterling silver and gold are mostly fine to wear through security, while other metals may set off the alarms.

Second, consider the size and style of your jewelry. Big metal statement necklaces and some watches will set off the alarms. Digital watches, small earrings, rings, and other small jewelry should pass through fine.

Does gold set off metal detectors?

Gold is a metal that can set off the detectors if you are wearing a big chunky piece. However, if you have a small piece of jewelry, like a ring or earrings, they are unlikely to cause problems.

Does silver set off metal detectors?

Sterling silver is also a metal that has a good chance of setting off the security metal detectors. However, like gold, if you have a small piece of jewelry, it's unlikely to cause any issues.

What metals set off metal detectors?

Any substantial amount of metal, including copper, brass, and aluminum can set off the detectors at the airport. If you have a piece of jewelry made with one of these metals, it's best to take it off before you go through security. Point out to the security agents what you are wearing or just remove them and place them in your bags ahead of time.

Can you take jewelry on a plane in your carry on?

When deciding whether to pack your jewelry in a carry-on or checked bag, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, think about the value of your jewelry. If you have expensive or sentimental jewelry, carry it on to lower the risk of it getting lost or damaged in transit.

Second, consider the size and style of your jewelry. If you have large or bulky pieces, they may be better stored in your checked bag. Finally, pack your jewelry in a protective case, pouch or other  travel organizer to prevent it from getting damaged during the journey.

Travel Organizers

If you love organization,  Crew VersaPack Luggage is a great choice for keeping jewelry, accessories, and everything else tidy with a variety of optional zip-in organizers that serve all sorts of needs.

How to pack necklaces for travel

Necklaces are one of the trickier pieces of jewelry to pack for travel. You'll want to ensure it doesn't get tangled. The best way to do this is to put it in a small pouch or wrap it in bubble wrap or tissue paper before placing it in your suitcase.

If you have a thicker or more durable necklace, you can simply loop it a few times and tuck it into the accessory pouch of your bag.

Packing Rings and Earrings

One of the most common questions is, "Can you bring earrings on a plane?" The answer is yes, but rings and earrings are easy to lose, so pack them carefully. One way is to put them in a pill case or other small container. You can also put them in a plastic bag that seals.

Storing Jewelry While Traveling

Once you've arrived at your destination, you'll need to find a safe place to store your jewelry. Most hotel rooms have a safe where you can store your valuables. You can also keep your jewelry stored in your luggage, if your luggage has a lock.

When you're out and about, only wear the jewelry you need for the day. Leave the rest safely tucked away in your room.

Jewelry in checked luggage

Putting jewelry in your checked bag is ok, but choose carefully. You don't want to add too much weight to your bag or risk losing anything too valuable.

First, take inventory of what you're bringing. Pack important pieces in your carry-on bag, and only bring what you're comfortable losing in your checked luggage.

Next, choose how you'll pack your jewelry. Investing in a travel jewelry case or jewelry organizer that protects your pieces is a good plan. If you're using a jewelry box, wrap each piece individually in soft cloth to prevent scratching.

Using packing cubes and travel pouches

If you like the idea of a travel jewelry organizer for keeping your baubles safe and handy, the  Travelpro Essentials Max Access Small Cube organizer gives you plenty of space. At the same time, its angled zipper opening makes finding what you want quick and easy.

For a lot of jewelry, it may be worth investing in a dedicated jewelry roll that has multiple compartments for different types of jewelry and a built-in mirror. But this can add bulk to your bag.  Ultra-lightweight packing cubes and travel pouches are a great option for keeping all of your accessories and clothing organized.

Packing cubes

Importance of bags with locks

Always use a lock when packing jewelry in your luggage. Locked bags deter thieves and help keep your items safe. Look for luggage with TSA-approved locks that can be safely opened and relocked with a master key in case your luggage needs to be inspected by authorities when you’re not there.

Packing jewelry for travel is easy with a bit of planning. Just take inventory of what you're bringing, choose the right packing method, and use a lock for extra security. Safe travels!

When it comes to packing necklaces for travel, visualizing a knotted mess of necklace chains may cause you enough anxiety to avoid packing jewelry altogether. There are several easy ways to organize your necklaces when packing to ensure they stay separated and in good condition. Once you read how simple it is to pack necklaces carefully, all that’s left to do is decide which necklaces to bring with you. Just don’t forget to keep in mind the extra precautions to take when traveling with expensive jewelry.

Wrapping Necklaces in Plastic Wrap

Step 1 Unroll a large piece of plastic wrap.

  • You can use regular plastic wrap or press and seal plastic wrap for this method of storing necklaces.

Step 2 Space the necklaces evenly across the plastic wrap.

  • When traveling with more than 6 necklaces, you may want to split the necklaces onto 2 separate sheets of plastic wrap as this can be easier to deal with. If so, repeat the directions for each batch of necklaces.

Step 3 Cut another sheet of plastic wrap that is the same size as the first one.

  • Don’t forget that plastic wrap is super sticky. Do your best to carefully remove it from the roll while holding onto each cut edge so it doesn’t become unruly.

Step 4 Place the second piece of plastic wrap on top of the first sheet.

  • Be sure the necklaces between the plastic wrap stay separated. Use your fingers to adjust the necklaces as needed.

Step 5 Press to seal the necklaces between the two sheets of plastic wrap.

  • Since you have already secured each necklace within the plastic wrap, they will remain separated and safe when rolled up.

Packing Necklaces in Straws

Step 1 Gather one straw for each necklace you plan to pack.

  • The type of plastic straw used will depend on the size of your necklaces. Thin straws will work well for thin chain necklaces, while straws with a larger opening will be best for necklaces that have more bulk.

Step 2 Unclasp a necklace and thread it through a straw.

  • If your necklace has a pendant, slide it towards one end of your necklace so you can thread most of the chain through the straw. Leave the pendant outside of the straw, as it probably won't fit.

Step 3 Close the clasp of each necklace.

  • The straw ensures that the necklace won’t get tangled with itself or another piece of jewelry. It will keep the necklace pulled taught and secure.

Step 4 Place necklaces into a toothbrush holder or Ziploc bag.

  • Use a large Ziploc bag to store your necklaces. Once you have placed the necklaces into the bag, roll the bag up so the necklaces don’t move around in transit.
  • If you are only bringing a few necklaces, try dropping them into a plastic toothbrush holder to keep them safe and secure.

Step 5 Pack chunky necklaces by slipping them through a toilet paper tube.

  • You can also use a paper towel tube for long chunky necklaces. Cut the roll down to the right size if necessary.

Step 1 Leave your most valuable pieces at home.

  • If you are going on a leisurely trip, try not to bring anything you are going to worry about losing. Bring a few neutral pieces that will work with multiple outfits but that you don’t have a lot of emotional or financial attachment to.
  • Consider leaving particularly sentimental pieces (like wedding rings) at home. Wear a less valuable alternative on your ring finger during your trip.

Step 2 Make a list of all the necklaces you are traveling with to keep track of them.

  • It may be smart to take photos of the necklaces before you leave for your trip. If you misplace jewelry that is insured, photographs can be helpful when making a claim.

Step 3 Pack necklaces in your carry-on to keep them close by.

  • Carrying the necklaces in your purse or personal bag is your best bet when it comes to traveling with expensive necklaces.

Step 4 Store expensive necklaces in the in-room safe.

To pack your necklaces for traveling, try using plastic wrap. Lay your necklaces vertically on the plastic wrap 2 inches apart, then cover them with another piece of wrap that’s the same size. You can also try using straws so your necklaces don’t get tangled. Just thread each necklace you want to take through a straw and place them in a small bag. If your necklaces are chunky, use a toilet paper tube instead. For tips on where to pack your necklaces in your luggage, read on! Did this summary help you? Yes No

Traveling with Jewelry: How to Pack Jewelry and Keep it Safe

Jewelry Case

As the travel industry begins to open back up for business, wanderlusters across the globe are itching to get themselves on the road, in the sky, and on the seas. As the last of the hot summer months ebb away and the temperatures start to fall, and perfect autumn getaways and winter holidays are just on the horizon, it’s a great time to book that trip.

But what’s the best way to make sure your most valuable and beautiful assets survive the voyage and return home safely to their little porcelain beds and velvet nests?

Protect your jewelry when you travel so you can be stunning wherever you go.

Document It

Learning how to pack jewelry doesn’t have to be difficult.

First, determine what kind of jewelry you will be bringing based on what kind of trip you are taking and where. Do your research on crime rates in the area you will be staying in, paying particular attention to theft.

Unless your itinerary involves a formal occasion such as a wedding or gala, consider leaving the more expensive jewelry at home. Some women even travel with fake engagement rings, replicas made of cubic zirconia, just in case of loss on vacation.

For someone who is very used to wearing one, a naked ring finger just feels "off" somehow. You can purchase these replicas for as little as $20, and they are surprisingly authentic-looking. Better, certainly, to lose one of these faux baubles at the beach than to have your most prized and sentimental possession swallowed up forever by ocean and sand.

If you do decide to bring the goods, make a list, and photograph each individual piece so you have a visual representation of your inventory. That way, if you lose your jewelry, you can provide the photos to the hotel or airline staff for reference. Or, if you suspect it stolen and need to file a police report, you can provide proof of ownership.

You can also provide these photos to your insurance company along with your expected dates of travel. This is a good idea to do anyway if you own expensive pieces, just for safety's sake.

The good news is that TSA does not require you to remove your jewelry during the security screening process, so you can just wear it through the gate. You can also request that you and your valuables are screened privately.

Keep in mind, you may be asked to take off larger pieces like statement necklaces, big cuffs, and bulky rings.

Also, the TSA recommends putting bulky jewelry or jewelry with a lot of metal into your carry-on bag. This is an extra security measure so you won’t forget to grab your jewelry out of the bin or risk it falling out during a security scan.

You can wear rings, necklaces, or wristwatches as long as they’re not oversized.

Always as a TSA officer if you aren’t sure of what to remove.

Got it? Great! Now we're ready to pack.

Keep it Together

When you travel with jewelry, there are many different ways to keep it safe and secure.

  • Pack jewelry in a way that it doesn't attract unwanted attention. You probably have all the things you need for DIY jewelry packing lying around your house.
  • A weekly pillbox is an excellent travel organizer and will give you seven slots for your rings and earrings. If you don't have one of these, an old Altoids tin will do in a pinch. Toss in a couple of cotton balls to keep jewelry separate and add another layer of protection.
  • Poke earrings through a paper or styrofoam plate and secure with earring backs. Leave enough room between each pair, and be sure to wrap the plate in doubled-up plastic wrap to avoid any scratches or fabric snags en route. In a pinch, buttons will do the trick for keeping pairs of earrings together. Rubber erasers are also good for housing earring posts in transit - just don't lose those backs!
  • Thread chain necklaces through a straw and clasp the ends, and it will stay intact and tangle-free. You can secure multiple straws with a twist tie or zip tie if needed. No straws handy? Lie necklaces flat and straight on plastic wrap and press to seal.
  • Loop and fasten bracelets around a rolled-up hand towel. An empty toilet paper or paper towel roll will also work for this, but be sure to place it in a Ziploc bag in case the bracelets slip off in transit.
  • Remember Kaboodles? You can get the same organization and space from a plastic fishing tackle box. Dozens of different-sized, sometimes removable compartments in a protective box. Ideal for travel.

If your jewelry does still happen to get tangled despite your best efforts, use a straight pin on the center of the knot to gently pull it apart as you work your way outwards. Go slowly, don’t rush, and never pull.

Jewelry Pouch

Draping the chain over a doorknob can help safely give you the leverage needed to hold it just taut enough, and a sprinkling of baby powder or baby oil can also help lubricate the really tricky tangles.

Roll small knots between your fingers to help loosen them up. Pack an eyeglasses cleaning kit with a cloth and solution for a quick polish and shine.

Keep It Close

Always keep your jewelry in your carry-on bag with you, preferably zipped up in an inside pocket. NEVER pack jewelry in with your luggage; as luggage can easily get lost. Do not leave your bag unattended in a car or in your suitcase, and don't hand it off to airline or hotel staff when checking bags.

Once you've touched down and checked into your hotel, you can request a personal safe from the front desk. Be sure to store jewelry in the safe whenever you are not wearing it.

Be advised that hotel safes are not 100 percent secure, as they can be taken from the room if not bolted to the floor, and hotel staff generally has access to it, but it is a better option than leaving them in your suitcase or out in the open.

You don’t have to worry about the jewelry you brought from home, but if you are traveling abroad, you may be asked to declare your purchases in customs on your returning flight or risk incurring fines or even detainment.

If you are a jewelry aficionado, you probably snagged some good deals on gorgeous pieces as a souvenir of your trip. If they are particularly expensive items, you definitely want to declare them.

As a general rule in Europe, for example, you can usually bring up to $800 worth of merchandise in your luggage without having to pay duty, though this amount is subject to vary depending on the country from which you are returning. The next $1,000 is taxed at 3 percent.

Pack Jewelry Safely When You Travel!

Your jewelry is unique and versatile. It’s how you accessorize, emphasize, and express your individuality.

It’s the personal signature you put on your outfit and overall look, making it ideal for vacation fashion. But while it certainly takes up less space than your clothes, it’s precious, often irreplaceable cargo and must be treated as such.

At Rellery, we realize that the most memorable moments are your own. That’s why we have tons of customizable jewelry options that are high-quality at a fair price. We can do this because we cut out the middleman so there aren’t ever any crazy markups!

Travel in style year-round. You deserve it.

Should I travel with jewelry?

Woman in leather jacket with Florence skyline in background

I love traveling with jewelry. When you are traveling with a capsule wardrobe it is a great way of accessorising and giving your outfit a new look without overpacking .

In fact we always use jewelry to change our looks when using the sudoku and the 5 4 3 2 1 packing method.

However a lot of people worry about the safety and security of their jewelry and about damaging it through tangles.

In this guide we will look at the different methods of packing jewelry for travel to prevent tangling and to keep your precious items safe. Then we will look at all of the different pieces of jewelry you may travel with and tell you the best method for packing each.

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel

Use a travel jewelry case.

Travel Jewelry Box containing rings and necklace

Perhaps the easiest way to pack jewelry for travel is by using a travel jewelry organiser. In fact this is one of our women’s travel essentials .

There tend to be two types of travel jewelry organizers – soft sided and hard sided.

Kate Spade New York Navy Floral Travel Jewelry Case, Small Jewelry Box to Organize Rings, Necklaces, Earrings, Garden Toss

I personally prefer to use a hard sided travel jewelry case organiser as these tend to have lots of separate compartments for different types of jewelry. And I find that items are less likely to move or tangle in a hard sided case.

Click here to shop travel jewelry case organizers.

However they will take up more in the case than flat fabric ones or the travel jewelry roll.

BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer Roll Foldable Jewelry Case for Journey-Rings, Necklaces, Bracelets, Earrings, Soft Pink

If you are traveling with carry on only / hand luggage only you may find that a soft-sided jewelry case works better for you. Just don’t be tempted to overfill it.

Click here to shop soft sided travel jewelry organisers.

However if you don’t have time or inclination to order a travel sized jewelry organiser our top hack for packing jewelry is to use an old mint tin. These can be used to store a pair of earrings and may be a necklace. Just don’t be tempted to pack too much in one as then you will get tangling.

For extra security and safety we recommend adding some cotton wool, bubble wrap or tissue paper into the tin.

You can also make a travel jewelry roll easily using a length of fabric and rubber bands however I use my jewelry organizers all the time so it has been well worth the investment.

How to Use Straws to Pack Jewelry for Travel

NEcklace threaded through straw aka how to pack jewelry with a straw for travel

Another of my great hacks for packing jewelry is to use a simple straw for packing necklaces and bracelets and can even be used for packing rings safely.

All you have to do is open the necklace and then thread the necklace chain through a plastic or reusable straw. Once the necklace or bracelet has been threaded through do the clasp back up and voila.

How to Pack Jewelry for Travel without tangling using a straw

The straw keeps one length of the necklace rigid and in place and means the jewelry can not get fully tangled necklaces. I find that this method works even with the most delicate necklaces.

This method also works for a bracelet however if the straw is too long simple cut the plastic or reusable straw to the appropriate size so you can thread through and do up the clasp again.

Note : I don’t tend to use metal reusable straws for packing jewelry as they are not very flexible for different sized pieces. Instead I tend to use plastic, bamboo or paper straws as these can be cut to the right size.

If you are traveling with rings also, you could thread your ring onto the necklace once threaded but before closing the clasp and this way your ring is secured securely to your necklace too.

Necklace and rings on a straw for travel

This is absolutely my favorite packing hack for traveling with jewelry.

Top tip: if you are eco conscious and want to use a more environmentally product than a plastic straw then a used roll of toilet paper roll is another great thing to pack your jewelry onto.

Use Travel Containers

Although my go to container for traveling with jewelry is my trusty travel jewelry case organiser, if you are limited on space you could look at using other containers you are already traveling with.

For instance, we always have a pill box with us, it’s one of our travel toiletry essentials . If we are traveling for less than 7 days then we will have a few empty sections which I like to add my earrings into as it takes up less space.

Other containers you may have with you that could be repurposed for jewelry include:

  • contact lens cases
  • glasses cases
  • ziploc bags / ziplock bags and
  • empty lipstick or lip balm containers.

If you can think of any others that we have missed then let us know in the comments below. We love finding out other people’s travel hacks and creative ways of protecting their jewelry while traveling.

Business cards

Business cards are another great way to save space in your case while also keeping your earrings safe. You can easily press your pairs of earrings through a business card and then out on the backs. It keeps them all in one place and you can store them either in a travel jewelry case or even a ziploc bag or sandwich bags.

This method works for both stud earrings and dangling earrings equally well.

Note: I have also seen a method where you can use a piece of plastic wrap such as Saran Wrap or cling film to separate necklaces. Although this is a good budget alternative, I personally find its quite a messy and time consuming process and worry about losing items this way.

How to pack jewelry for travel without tangling (item specific tips)

So now you know the various methods of packing jewelry for travel we will look at all the different types of jewelry people commonly travel with and tell you the best method for packing them.

How to pack Necklaces for travel without tangling

Necklaces are one of the most commonly traveled with pieces of jewelry. However the risk of traveling with necklaces, especially if you are traveling with more than one, is that they can become a tangled mess.

Therefore when you look at how to pack necklaces for travel without tangling the best way of doing so are:

  • using a travel jewelry box, or
  • using reusable straws to thread the necklaces through.

You can also use ziplock bags and other containers. If you do decide to use these types of containers most important thing to do is to travel with the necklace chain closed, and separating each necklace. By separating the necklaces from one and other you reduce the risk of tangled necklaces.

How to pack bracelets for travel without tangling

The way to pack bracelets for travel without tangling is very similar to packing necklaces for travel without tangling.

Either use:

  • a travel jewelry organiser or
  • use a straw, or paper towel roll.

If you decide to use the later of these two options you may have to cut the straw or roll to the right size so you can close the bracelet. For this reason you would be unable to use a metal straw to pack a bracelet.

How to keep rings safe while traveling

Personally I find that using a jewelry box is the safest way to travel with rings, other than wearing them.

That is because they are unlikely to be disposed of accidentally if being stored in a smaller container.

Otherwise I would use my necklaces that are either in the jewelry box or that have been packed on a straw to thread through the necklace and keep safe.

Note : remember if you are wearing rings and are travel to a cold weather location or winter location remember that your fingers can contract in size in the cold. This makes it easier to loose jewelry, especially when taking gloves on and off.

How to pack earrings for travel

Earrings obviously do not take up any space in a suitcase. However they are always a risk at getting lost, (especially small earrings such as stud earrings).

Personally I travel with my earrings either in my hard sided jewelry organiser or use a business card. I poke the earrings through the business card and add the backs on. this way all the pairs of earrings are kept in one place safe and secure.

How to pack cufflinks for travel

And it is not just women who are traveling with jewelry. My husband always travels with cufflinks, especially when we are going somewhere slightly more formal such as on a cruise ship or to a wedding .

The best way to pack cufflinks for travel is to use a cufflink box.

Otherwise, I would use something like an old mint box lined with cotton wool to pack cufflinks for travel.

Click here to shop cufflink boxes for travel.

Other Tips for Traveling with Jewelry

Wear jewlry or pack in carry on.

Emerald ring on finger for travel

Although it can be tempting to put jewelry in checked luggage we recommend that you never do this. The risk of a checked bag being lost or stolen is far greater than a carry-on bag.

Therefore we recommend you either wear it, even when going through airport security or having it in your carry on so it is with you at all times.

Travel with costume jewelry

If you are worried about traveling with precious jewelry and expensive items, you could consider packing costume jewelry instead of “real” jewelry.

I actually find that there are some really great statement pieces of costume jewelry, particularly statement necklaces which can make outfits look completely different.

Also costume jewelry can give you peace of mind and is unlikely to attract unwanted attention.

Click here to shop costume jewelry.

Don’t pack sentimental jewelry

Barring wedding rings and my engagement ring I never travel with sentimental jewelry. The reason for this is that it gives me extra anxiety when traveling with special items. For this reason I always leave them at home

Use the hotel room safe

If you are traveling with expensive jewelry, valuable items or sentimental jewelry be sure to leave them in the hotel room safe. I never wear expensive jewelry sightseeing especially in areas known for pickpockets or in more deprived areas. The reason is that is can draw unwanted attention and be a safety risk.

Essential Tips For Safeguarding Your Jewelry While Traveling

To ensure your precious jewelry remains safe and secure during your journey, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Brunno Braga • Nov 3, 2023

travel packing jewelry

Traveling with your favorite jewelry can add a touch of elegance and personal style to your adventures. However, to ensure your precious pieces remain safe and secure during your journey, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Traveling with special gems can enhance your style and make your journey more memorable. By following these tips and staying vigilant, you can ensure your precious pieces remain safe while you explore the world.

1. Choose Wisely

Selecting the right pieces for your trip is the first step. Opt for versatile items that complement a variety of outfits. Leave expensive or irreplaceable pieces at home to avoid potential loss or theft.

2. Pack Smart

To prevent tangling, use small gem pouches, organizers, or a pillbox to separate and store your items. Packing jewelry in your carry-on luggage is a safer choice, as you can keep a closer eye on it. When going through airport security, avoid wearing excessive jewelry. You’ll need to remove items such as watches, belts, and large gems when passing through metal detectors. Place them in a tray for scanning.

3. Insure Your Jewelry

Consider insuring your valuable pieces before your trip. Some homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policies may cover personal property, including jewelry, while traveling. If not, you can purchase travel insurance with additional coverage for valuables. If you’re traveling with high-value jewelry, consider obtaining a jewelry appraisal certificate and providing copies to your insurance company before your trip. These documents can help prove ownership and value in case of loss or theft.

4. Keep Your Jewelry in Your Carry-On

Always carry your valuable items in your carry-on bag. Checked luggage can be subject to rough handling, increasing the risk of damage or loss. An easy way to avoid losing small items is to create a detailed inventory of your gem. List each piece, along with a brief description and its value. This list will be helpful in the event of loss or theft.

5. Security While Out and About

When you’re out exploring your destination, exercise caution. Keep your gem concealed when not in use and avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Wearing elaborate jewelry in unfamiliar places may attract unwanted attention. If your accommodation offers a safe, use it to store your jewelry when you’re not wearing it. Most hotels provide safes in guest rooms or at the front desk.

6. Regularly Check Your Jewelry

During your trip, periodically inspect your jewelry to ensure nothing is damaged or lost. Taking a few moments to check can help you catch any issues early. Saltwater and chlorine can be harsh on jewelry, potentially causing damage or discoloration. Remove your jewelry before swimming in the ocean or pool.

Travel Jewelry: What To Take and What Not To Take

Travel Jewelry

When you’re traveling, you want to look good and feel good. (The two are probably related!) And you certainly don’t want the hassle of worrying about losing precious jewelry or making yourself a target for thieves.

A sobering survey  conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group found that 20 percent of travelers experienced a loss or theft of fine jewelry, with only one percent of them recovering the lost item(s).

Experts say the beach is the most common place to lose precious jewelry

There are some common sense tips you can take to safeguard precious jewelry. In addition, think carefully about whether it may be more prudent to travel with costume pieces that you don’t have to worry about.

13 common sense tips for traveling with precious jewelry

An invitation to theft

1-  Be strategic about deciding what to take and what to leave home, and keep a list of what you’ve taken.

2-  Leave flashy bling at home if you really don’t need to bring it.

3-  Think twice about bringing irreplaceable keepsake items on your trip (e.g., your mother’s cocktail ring or the diamond studs you received as a gift for your 40th birthday).

4-  If you decide to take precious jewelry with you, never pack it in your checked bag. Instead, tuck it in a zippered compartment in your purse so you can keep your eye on it.

5-  A compact jewelry case can protect fragile pieces from breakage and keep everything you’re bringing in one place.

6-  Be cautious about placing precious jewelry (or other valuables) inside cruise ship staterooms or hotel room safes. Many of these safes aren’t as secure as you might think. Moreover, you run the risk of forgetting to empty the safe when you leave. (Tip: Some people suggest putting one shoe of a pair in the safe to remind you to look there before you leave your room.)

7-  As a rule, it’s usually safer to wear jewelry than to stow it. But be aware of the location where you’re leaving it and the destination.

8-  Be especially cautious in crowds, when using public transportation, or at any places where you feel at high risk.

9-  If you feel unsafe and are wearing precious jewelry, conceal your flashy diamond ring by turning it inside your hand so it isn’t visible, or tuck your fancy necklace under your sweater.

10- Be careful not to lose rings or other items at the beach or in the water.

11- Don’t remove rings or watches when washing your hands, and inadvertently leave them on your hotel room sink or in a public restroom.

12- Be sure to check your homeowner’s policy and any insurance riders to make sure you are covered for loss or theft of jewelry and that the policies are up-to-date.

13- If you’re traveling with any precious pieces, take photos of them on your cellphone before leaving home. In the event of loss or theft, the photos could be useful for filing a police report or making an insurance claim.

What is travel jewelry? An elegant solution

Pandora makes a lovely line that's suitable for travel.

Replacing precious with costume travel jewelry is an elegant solution. A few nice pieces, even if they are fake, can brighten up an outfit and put a bounce in your step.

While you’re shopping for yourself, remember that travel jewelry also makes a wonderful birthday or Bon Voyage gift for a friend or relative because it’s so personal, lightweight, and easy to pack.

Here are some tips for selecting travel jewelry:

1-   Try to stay under $100 when purchasing travel jewelry. Of course, losing anything on a trip makes you feel like kicking yourself. But you certainly don’t want to worry about losing something you can’t afford to lose.

2-   Keep all your costume jewelry pieces together, perhaps in a jewelry pouch or roll, so you can readily find what you want to wear.

3-   To simplify choosing and packing travel jewelry, stick to either silver or gold-toned pieces.

4-   Adding large statement pieces with splashes of color can liven up a dull outfit.

5-  Avoid heavy pieces that add weight to your carry-on or handbag.

6-  Remember to take off costume jewelry when you hit the beach or pool; sun, sand, and saltwater can shorten the life of these items.

7-  Handcrafted jewelry you find while traveling can make a wonderful souvenir to take home and add to your travel accessory wardrobe.

Packing your Jewels for Travel

How to: pack your jewels for travel.

So you’re going somewhere fabulous and aren’t sure how to pack your jewels efficiently. Well, first off, I’m jealous. Where are you going and can I come with? Secondly, stop worrying! I have so many tips and tricks to share with you to make sure all of your precious baubles travel safely.

When in doubt, wear it all. I’m half kidding half-serious. On a recent trip to Palm Beach one of my team members was so worried about her jewels getting lost she put everything she could reasonably fit on her person and strutted through security in sweats, sans makeup, sparkling like a disco ball. Amazingly enough, she didn’t set off the metal detector. It’s not my go-to tactic, but it works as a last resort.

Traveling with jewelry can be risky business, so it’s important to pack your accessories thoughtfully. Sure, you can always use Ziploc baggies and tissue paper, but the easiest and safest way to keep your jewelry safe is by using a handy travel-size jewelry case.

Since travel jewelry cases come in all different shapes and sizes, we tried 25 options from trusted luggage and jewelry brands. After loading the cases up with jewelry, we tossed, dropped, and shook them to see how safe the jewelry would be in situations like traveling where rough handling can be expected. From testing, we selected the winning jewelry cases that will keep your jewelry safe and organized whether you’re a jewelry minimalist or maximalist.

Best Overall: Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case

Best budget: bagsmart jewelry organizer bag.

  • Best Roll-Up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

Best Personalization: Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case

Best large capacity: kendra scott medium travel jewelry case, best for long trips: calpak jewelry case, best compact: vee & co. small travel jewelry case.

  • Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Mini Jewelry Organizer

Best Sustainable: Paravel Jewelry Case

The small, oval container is the perfect size for a weekend getaway.

It could use a few more organizational features.

Cuyana’s oval-shaped case is deceptively spacious in comparison to its smaller design. Perfect for minimalist jewelry wearers, the interior has plenty of room and designated spots for several rings and earrings, but there aren’t specific latches for necklaces or bracelets. The two slip pockets on each side of the case can hold bigger or longer pieces of jewelry, but they run the risk of getting tangled without a latch so we wish the organization was a bit better. Made with genuine leather, the case has a protective exterior with a soft suede interior to further guard the jewelry against scratching or other damage. Throughout six months of tests, we loved this case for weekend getaways and longer trips alike and found it to be the perfect size to toss in a backpack or personal item.

The Details: Italian leather | 5 in. x 3.5 x 1.25 inches

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

The bag is spacious yet compact and comes with a handle to carry it easily.

The quality feels a bit lower than other cases we tried.

Designed similarly to a toiletry bag, we love that this wallet-friendly jewelry case comes with a top handle to transport it to and from a suitcase with ease. The compact bag is also a great deal considering how much jewelry it can hold while still being easy to pack. The polyester material is protective and flexible so the bag can pack down to a smaller size depending on how much jewelry is inside. The interior has an earring panel, ring bands, necklace clips, and various zippered pockets for storing all of the jewelry you want to pack for a trip. While we didn’t notice any issues with quality during testing, the materials feel less durable than other pricier cases we tried. We tossed the packed jewelry case around a bit during our tests and the items remained perfectly safe without any tangling or damage. Even after traveling with the case on seven flights, trains, and throughout more than four roadtrips during our six months of tests, nothing became tangled and the case is proving to be durable and sturdy.

The Details: Polyester | 6.1 x 9.8 x 1.9 inches

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Best Roll-up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

The compartments roll out, which makes it easier to pack jewelry.

It was slightly difficult to put the earrings on the designated card.

Bagsmart impressed us a second time with their roll-up jewelry organizer, which was the easiest bag to pack with jewelry during testing. After six months of use, we love that it can fit a lot of jewelry and has compartments big enough for even the biggest hoops and other dramatic earrings. The envelope-style case unrolls and lies flat so you can easily see all of the pockets, latches, and hooks for storing every piece of jewelry you could ever need for traveling thanks to the larger capacity. We had some slight difficulty getting earrings into the holes in the earring card, but it was just a minor inconvenience, and there are plenty of other spots to place hoops and studs. Made with cotton fabric, the case may feel a bit flimsy, but is soft and protective, and it’s very compact since it can lie fairly flat even after it’s packed with jewelry.

The Details: Cotton | 9.06 x 6.3 x 5.75 inches

Mark & Graham

It comes in 28 color and pattern options — plus it's monogrammable.

After six months of using the case, we wish it had more space for necklaces, bracelets, and larger earrings.

Looking for the perfect gift for a traveler? You can monogram this Mark & Graham jewelry case with up to three letters for a personalized touch that makes the gift all the more thoughtful. The square-shaped case has a sturdy exterior that feels like it will hold up perfectly in a packed carry-on and the pebbled vegan leather gives the box a sophisticated look while sitting on a desk or dresser. The interior is split into two sections with a mirror divider to separate the box, which makes it slightly difficult to fit larger jewelry pieces like a watch or chunky necklace, but after six months of testing, we did like that the separate sections help you access all your items without spilling everything out. We also love that there are tons of ring pillow slots so if you’re a big ring wearer, this jewelry case is an excellent option. In addition, there are several necklace or earring latches as well as a slip pocket and sections for bracelets or broaches.

The Details: Vegan leather, linen | 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.25 inches

Kendra Scott

The large size of this jewelry box makes it useful for heavy packers or at-home use.

It doesn’t have any necklace hooks.

Jewelry maximalists will appreciate the bigger size of Kendra Scott’s jewelry case. It looks like a traditional jewelry box that sits on a dresser, but it’s also very portable thanks to its lightweight materials and design. The interior has four large compartments to easily drop in bracelets, necklaces, or watches without any hassle and there are over 10 ring pillow slots for rings or earrings. To keep all the packed jewelry safe, the case comes with a divider to prevent items from jostling around on the go. The case also comes with a small matching zippered pouch that you can keep in the box or remove for extra storage. We found this separate pouch to be perfect for use on shorter trips when you may not need to bring the full case. While we wish the box had a few more organizational features like necklace hooks or earring holes, the jewelry remained perfectly intact after we shook it around, so we’re confident that the box keeps items safely tucked away. Plus, after six months of use, the stylish case still looks new and is a great option for home storage, too.

The Details: Polyurethane, polyester | 8 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches

After six months of traveling with this case, not one necklace became tangled thanks to the plentiful hooks.

We wish it had more storage options for studs.

If you’re embarking on an international trip that includes a checked bag, we recommend this jewelry case from Calpak to weather the journey. Since the rectangular jewelry case is bigger, it can easily store enough jewelry for several weeks of traveling. The structured design makes it ultra-durable and our favorite part is that it has a built-in drawstring bag that does an excellent job of keeping bracelets, watches, or earrings safely secured in the bottom section of the jewelry case. The top part has a variety of necklace latches and a ring holder for even more security. When we rigorously shook the container, none of the jewelry budged from its original spots, so we feel confident that this case will protect your valuables in a checked bag with no issues.

The Details: Faux leather, faux suede | 7 x 5 x 2.5 inches

The square-shaped box is small enough to easily fit in a carry-on or backpack.

The jewelry might scratch up the mirror on the divider.

The lower price and superior functionality make this petite jewelry case an excellent option for anyone looking for a place to store their accessories. It’s smaller than a lot of the options we tested, so we think it’s ideal for travelers needing to save space in a backpack or suitcase. Despite its compact stature, this jewelry box can fit tons of jewelry from studs to a leather watch. It’s intuitive to pack the case with rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more since there are designated latches, slots, and compartments for virtually everything. When we shook the case, all of the jewelry remained packed away in its original spot without any damage occurring. The box has a divider with a mirror on one side and our only worry is that the mirror could get scratched by the metals or vice-versa, so you may want to put a small piece of fabric between the mirror just in case.

The Details: PU vegan leather | 3.94 x 3.94 x 1.97 inches

Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Carrie Mini Jewelry Organizer

The small design makes it easy to store the case in a purse.

It can’t fit large jewelry pieces.

Jewelry minimalists will love this tiny jewelry case for keeping track of just a few pieces of jewelry while on the go. After six months of use, we love that this Levenger mini jewelry case has latches, hooks, and pockets to protect and organize rings, bracelets, and necklaces. It is on the small side with minimum space for studs, but light packers will appreciate the hard, durable exterior that still looks new after six months. The genuine leather exterior and suede interior feels luxurious and looks elegant, so this also makes a great jewelry case for newlyweds going on a honeymoon . We especially love the tiny zippered pocket in the middle of the case for storing extra small jewelry items like studs or stacking rings.

The Details: Leather, microsuede | 4.25  x 4.5 x 1 inches

All of the materials used to make this case are recycled.

The organizational features could be better and, after six months of use, we think it's a bit too large to pack in a carry-on.

Paravel is one of our favorite luggage brands , so we’re pleased to report that its jewelry case impressed us, too. The circular case is made entirely of recycled materials from post-consumer plastic water bottles and upcycled zippers to create an eco-friendly accessory for travel. Besides the sustainability factor, the case comes with a large drawstring pouch that makes it easy to drop in larger pieces of jewelry like bracelets or watches. The top flap of the case has a ring holder and earring post to store smaller pieces of jewelry, but we wish there were a few more organization features like necklace latches or zippered pockets. However, we love the vintage-style design and, like most Paravel bags, you can monogram the case with initials for a special touch.

The Details: Recycled canvas, vegan leather | 5.6 x 3.6 inches

Other Travel Jewelry Cases We Liked

The jewelry cases below get an honorable mention since they still performed well in testing, but fell slightly short compared to our top performers.

Benevolence Plush Velvet Travel Jewelry Box Organizer : This jewelry box can fit a ton of items, but you’ll want to make sure everything is secure before traveling since we noticed most of the jewelry became dislodged during testing.

Mejuri Travel Case : The case looks elegant and sleek on the outside, but the interior doesn’t offer much in the organizational department, so it’s best for minimalist travelers.

After thoroughly researching jewelry cases from trusted brands, we selected 25 options to first test out in our New York City lab. We packed each case with every type of jewelry you can think of, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more to get a feel for the usefulness of the organization features. Then, we tossed, dropped, and shook the cases (think Kourtney Kardashian level of salad bowl shaking) to see if the jewelry remained safely secured in place or if the pieces moved around. We also examined the cases for any scuffing or damage.

With our lab testing portion complete, we then rated the jewelry cases based on ease of use, capacity, design, and quality to determine the winners. We continued to test the jewelry cases for an additional six months so we could see how each one performed while traveling in a more natural setting after the lab testing, and then added those insights.

Tips for Buying a Jewelry Case

Buy the right size case for your needs.

First, you’ll want to think about how much jewelry you travel with to determine the best size for your needs. For those who travel with bigger pieces of jewelry like watches or chunky necklaces, consider getting a more structured case with large compartments. Delicate or minimalist jewelry will pack better in an envelope or binder style of jewelry case. And if your jewelry collection consists of just a few pieces, opt for a mini jewelry case to save space in your luggage.

Consider organization

Most jewelry cases come with latches, hooks, pockets, and pillows to hold pretty much any piece of jewelry you can think of. Like other types of travel organizers , some jewelry cases are more barebones than others, so you’ll want to buy a case according to your organization preferences or based on the type of jewelry you travel most with. If most of your jewelry consists of earrings, be sure to get a box that has pockets and hole cards with spots for hoops, studs, and dangling earrings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best way to keep your jewelry safe and organized is to use a jewelry case. The best thing about travel jewelry cases is that they often come with designated slots for all types of accessories to make packing intuitive and quick. If you want to add an extra layer of protection, you can always place tissue or fabric between your jewelry to prevent the pieces from rubbing against one another in transit.

Once your jewelry is packed into the case, we recommend placing the jewelry case between soft clothing for safekeeping or in a personal item in case you have to gate-check your bag when flying. It can be risky to place a jewelry case in a checked bag since you may run the risk of the bag getting lost, but it depends on your comfort level for flying with potentially valuable items.

How to Pack Jewelry for a Trip

How to Pack Jewelry for a Trip

When packing jewelry for a trip, you have two things to decide.

  • What will you bring with you?
  • How are you going to get it there?

Read on or watch, sisters. We share our best tips for packing jewelry for a safe and stylish trip.

Step 1: Deciding What Jewelry to Bring on Your Trip

We’ll start with the obvious. When packing for a trip, it’s a good idea to pick your jewelry according to the outfits you’ve packed.

But, if you’re like most jewelry lovers, that only narrows your options slightly. Where do you go from here?

Keep the three S’s in mind: Simple, Single, and Selective . Let us explain.

  • Simple : Bring your staple items. These are your go-to’s, that are easy to throw on and mix and match with any outfit.
  • Single: Travel requires flexibility. That holds true for your jewelry as well. Make room for versatility by choosing a singular palette for your jewelry. Shiny pieces, either gold or silver (just pick one), can give any outfit an instant glow up. If you’re more low-key, use black accents or solid colors to complement your outfits (again, just choose one tone).
  • Selective: Like we said, you’ll make things easier on yourself if you stick to one slice of the color wheel with your jewelry. There’s no need to bring your entire jewelry box along for the trip, so be choosy! One place you want to be extra selective is your expensive jewelry: leave it at home if you can. Snafus happen when you travel; it’s easier to laugh them off when they don’t involve losing your fine diamonds.

Step 2: How to Pack Your Jewelry for a Trip

Now that you’ve made your selections, it’s time to figure out how to pack them. Here’s what we recommend for different jewelry pieces.

For packing your necklaces

You can use fabric pouches, jewelry boxes, or mini plastic bags to pack your necklaces, ideally with the clasp closed and hang outside of the bag to more likely prevent tangles.

Alternately, grab some shelf liner. Lie your necklaces on it, with space in between them, and gently roll the fabric up.

For packing your bracelets

Store your bracelets in another fabric pouch or ziplock bag, separate from the one containing your necklaces (in order to avoid them tangling together).

You can also DIY your own jewelry roll, by rolling up a washcloth and sliding your bracelets over it. Then, place it in a ziplock bag for security.

For packing your rings

Pack your smaller rings in a pill case, using a separate day for each ring so you can see them clearly.

For your larger rings (or if you don’t have a pillbox available), string them on the loop of one of your fabric pouches and tie the end together with a knot. You can also use fabric pouches, ziplock bags, and/or jewelry boxes to hold your rings, but separate compartments allow for rings to be more secure.

For packing your earrings

For this one, we encourage you to get a bit crafty. Find a piece of fabric , thin enough for you to pierce your earrings through.

If you don’t have any fabric swatches lying around, use cardboard, a styrofoam plate , or a sturdy piece of paper from an old shoebox and punch your own holes through it. Or, you can share the pillbox you used for your rings with your earrings.

A Simpler, Sleeker Solution to Packing Jewelry for a Trip: The Roam Often Travel Jewelry Case

As you can imagine, these containers add up quickly and can be cumbersome to carry separately. Instead of packing for your weekend getaway, it starts to feel like you’re opening up a mini Container Store in your carry-on!

For a more elegant solution befitting a stylish jetsetter like yourself, we recommend a travel jewelry case — specifically, The Wanderer travel jewelry case we sell here at Roam Often. We may be a bit biased, but hear us out! Just take a look at how easy it is to pack all of your jewelry for a trip, all in one sleek, stylish little case:

  • Slide your rings onto the ring bar that’s there just for them.
  • Hang your earrings on the dedicated earring bar, or store larger dangles in the included pocket.
  • Pack your bracelets in the generously-sized pocket, or hang them on the necklace side of the case.
  • Loop your necklaces through the hook and clasp them to prevent tangling, or store them in the pocket.

That’s it. With the Roam Often travel jewelry case , there’s a place for every piece of your jewelry.

Once you’ve packed it all, you zip it up like a mini suitcase for your jewelry. Then, you can toss this in your carry-on or your purse to keep all your jewelry with you, safe and secure, wherever your travels take you!

How to pack your jewelry

While it can be tempting to throw all your jewelry in a jacket pocket or a shoe, this is a recipe for lost and broken pieces. The best way to pack your jewelry is in a dedicated holder so you don’t have lots of stray items floating around your luggage.

When looking for something to keep your jewelry in, you need to consider three things: protection, organization, and accessibility. You don’t want anything to be lost or damaged, you don’t want things to get tangled, and you want to be able to find everything easily. Which of these you choose to focus on will depend on factors like the amount and type of items you want to take and how valuable they are.

Types of jewelry organizers

Fabric pouches.

Sheer fabric pouches are a common approach to storing your jewelry and are a good option for short trips. But it’s easy for them to get lost floating around in large luggage. Necklaces can end up in knots with all the movement and it doesn’t offer much protection from other items in your bag.

One solution to this is to keep them in a pocket in your wash bag. It offers extra protection and keeps them together in a convenient, easy-to-find place. I personally like this option as it’s a reminder to take things off before getting in the shower. Just make there’s no risk of it getting wet.

Jewelry rolls

A popular option for traveling with jewelry is a fabric jewelry roll. They have lots of organization features and it’s easy to unwind and see everything you own in one place. They’re small and easy to slot into a small space in your bag. The fabric stops things from getting scratched, but it may not be sturdy enough if you have more expensive pieces.

A travel jewelry box

A mini jewelry box is the best way to keep your jewelry protected during travel. They have lots of gentle slots and separators to keep everything organized and in top condition.

But since it’s so sturdy, it can take up much-needed space in your luggage. Space for what you ask? Here are some items that should be on your packing list in every trip: travel essentials for women .

DIY jewelry organizers

Don’t want to fork out on fancy jewelry holders for your next trip? You can make some excellent organizers from items lying around your home.

  • Use Ziploc bags to keep everything together.
  • Punch holes in a piece of cardboard to custom-fit all your pieces.
  • Use an old pill organizer and put a different item in each day’s box.
  • Thread necklaces through straws so they don’t get tangled.
  • Fasten earrings through buttons so you don’t end up with odd pairs.
  • An old tin with something soft inside will stop things from getting thrown around.

Types of jewelry to take traveling

The type of jewelry you’ll want to take with you will depend on where you’re going and what your plans are. If you have lots of nights out on the town planned, you’d want to pack more jewelry than if you were going on an adventure holiday. Consider your comfort too. If you’re wearing sneakers the whole time, an ankle bracelet will probably get on your nerves.

Research any safety measures you want to take during your trip. If you’re traveling to a poor area it might not be appropriate to flash your wealth. Wearing any high-quality jewelry could make you a target in places with high crime rates. If you’re unsure, keep things conservative or forgo wearing it all together.

If you’re going on a beach holiday or anywhere where you’ll be in and out of the water, consider if you’ll remember to put your jewelry on and take it off all the time. If you still want something to wear with your bikini, you could take cute non-metal pieces like shells or beads. There are also some great companies around producing waterproof jewelry that doesn’t tarnish.

Choosing what to take

If you’re a magpie when it comes to sparkly things, then you might be struggling to fit all your favorite pieces in your luggage. Take a look at the outfits you’re planning to wear and pick the items that you think will go best with them. Try to pack small and versatile pieces that will go with anything. Then if you have extra space, you can take a few extra pieces with a bit more pizzazz.

As always when putting together your travel wardrobe, having a color scheme makes things easier. If you haven’t picked a side yet, try to go with all silver or all gold items so they’re easy to mix and match. Check out this article for more tips on traveling light and looking stylish .

Protecting your jewelry

While traveling, you’re often doing activities outside of your normal routine. When you’re having fun, it’s easy to forget how that might affect your jewelry. Remember, your trip should be about relaxing and having fun. If traveling with expensive or sentimental jewelry is going to cause you unnecessary stress, you might be better off leaving it at home.

Sweat and suncream can both cause metals to tarnish, giving your favorite necklace a shorter sell-by date. If you’re somewhere hot, try to stick to non-metal pieces or cheaper costume jewelry during the day. It’ll fit the holiday vibes and you can save your nicer pieces for dressing up in the evenings.

Consider when you’re doing any high-impact activities and make a mental note to leave your jewelry at home. It could be a prime time for a necklace to rip off or an earring to fall out. Whether you’re bungee jumping or surfing, it would be a real downer on the day if you broke your favorite bracelet. It could also be a breach of health and safety protocols.

Traveling with valuable Jewelry

If you need to take expensive jewelry or pieces with a high sentimental value on your trip, you can take extra measures to keep them safe. As with all important items, you should pack expensive jewelry in your carry-on luggage for extra security. Once you arrive at your destination, keep it in the hotel safe whenever you aren’t wearing it.

When wearing expensive items, be careful not to flash them in risky areas or late at night. If you’re wearing something for a special event, take a taxi or private car there and back to minimize the risk of it getting snatched on the way.

Expensive jewelry is often covered by your travel insurance. Check your policy before you go to know not only if you’re covered for all your items, but if the type of travel and your destination is covered too. If you’re struggling to find a quote that includes your jewelry, you can also take out separate insurance designed for matters like this. Make sure you have a list of everything you take saved on the cloud so you know what you need to claim in an emergency.

Leave space to buy new items

I’m not one for souvenirs gathering dust on my shelf and try to things with a purpose to take home with me. I love picking up small pieces of jewelry when I’m traveling as a memento of my trip.

You can pick up beautiful, handcrafted pieces that have a story, so they feel special without breaking the bank. That way, you get to learn a bit more of the culture and it isn’t a big deal when pieces get lost or damaged.

Taking new jewelry as you travel is a great way collect mementos

Will my jewelry be picked up by the airport scanner?

Jewelry will rarely cause a problem at airport security. In fact, TSA recommends you keep expensive jewelry with you at all times . Keeping it on your body instead of in your hand or checked luggage is the safest option while traveling. If you do set off an alarm or must provide extra information, you can ask for searches and further discussions to be made in a separate room for your privacy and security.

Should I declare jewelry at customs?

For some countries, it’s okay to enter and leave with personal items you already own. Sometimes there are restrictions on the amount or total value of jewelry you can’t declare. Anything you’re worried about, you can register with a customs officer before you depart. If you buy fine jewelry abroad, many destinations require you to declare it on arrival.

Navigating customs laws can be confusing. You should always use official government sites to check ahead of time what the customs requirements are for the destination you’re traveling to. If in doubt, declare it. It may cause extra hassle at the airport but could save you a lot of money in the long run.

Does waterproof jewelry really work?

If you’re going to be in and out of the water a lot on your trip, it can be annoying to think about taking your jewelry on and off and leaving it in a safe place. The latest trend in the jewelry world is waterproof, but does it actually work? Stainless steel, titanium, and platinum are just some materials that are sturdy enough to survive a few dips.

Bear in mind that waterproof is not the same as chemical proof . Chlorine, sweat, suncream, soap, and seawater all affect different metals in different ways. You’ll have to check the care requirements for each piece you choose to wear. If you don’t want the hassle, skip the jewelry or take less expensive pieces that you don’t mind getting tarnished.
