Educational Tours in Israel

The Perfect Way to Expand Your Students Horizons

Vámonos’ educational tours in Israel are more than just an opportunity for students to see historic sites. It’s a chance to explore one of the most culturally diverse, historically rich, and fascinating countries on Earth. Israel is a land of contrasts and contradictions where ancient traditions meet modern practices in a way that is both surprising and enlightening. The tiny State of Israel, only 70 years old and smaller in size than New Jersey, is an ideal destination for student travel and performing groups . No place on earth is as packed with history, geographical diversity, and cultural treasures as is Israel.

Though a bit smaller than the size of New Jersey, it contains snow capped mountains in the north, tropical coral reefs in the south (Red Sea), sandy beaches along the Mediterranean, the Judean Desert, and the lowest point on earth (Dead Sea). Our Israel guided tours include a personal cultural touch and add unique experiences such as school visits, scavenger hunts at markets, and conversations with locals.

Historical Israel Tours

Israel is an incredibly historical country, and as such, it boasts various historical and cultural monuments. Our educational Israel tours offer students the opportunity to learn about biblical and ancient history, world religions, and the past that has led to the present conflict. Walking through historic sites like Masada, the Dead Sea, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee provide students with a deeper understanding of the country, while museums like the Israel Museum in Jerusalem provide access to some of the most significant archeological relics and documents in the world. A student who visits these historic sites is likely to develop an appreciation of the past and the present role it plays in shaping the future.

Experience Different Cultures

Israel has for years been a melting pot of different cultures, religions, and ethnicities. The educational tours Israel provides give an opportunity to experience this unique mix first hand. From wandering through the old city of Jerusalem, the diverse neighborhoods in Tel Aviv, and the vibrant port city of Haifa , students get to see how different cultures interact and coexist. People from every continent live in Israel, leading to a progressive blend of new and old traditions. The inclusive nature of the country allows students to interact with people from different cultures and learn from them, and your Vámonos Israel tour guides ensure students have an immersive yet safe visit.

On the Mount of Beatitudes, contemplate the “Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5-7). Explore the Church of the Fish and the Loaves at Tabgha, a traditional site for feeding the 5,000 (Luke 9:10-17). Look out over Tel Megiddo (Armageddon) to view one of the most important archaeological sites in Israel. Today’s last stop is Caesarea, a center of the early Christians where an angel visited Cornelius, the first Gentile believer (Acts 10), and where Paul was imprisoned for two years before appealing to Caesar.

Day 5 Day 5 - Bet Shean, Jericho, & Qumran

Start the day in Bet Shean, a city continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. The uncovered ruins date back to the Greek / Roman city that was part of the Decapolis of Jesus’ day. See colonnaded streets with marble sidewalks, Roman public baths, and a theater. As you stop in Jericho to view the ruins of the city conquered by Joshua (Joshua 6:1, 2, 20), in the distance, you can also see the traditional site of the Temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11). Continue to Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947.

In Bethlehem, visit the cave revered as Jesus’ birthplace and see the Church of the Nativity constructed over the site (Matthew 1:18-25). Gaze out over Shepherds’ Field before returning to Jerusalem. Explore the poignant exhibits of Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust Memorial.

Day 7 Day 7 - Jerusalem & the City of David

Begin your day with a group picture taken from the Mount of Olives, where Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9-12). Walk the Palm Sunday Road, pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, and envision the scenes of the night before Jesus’ crucifixion (Matthew 26:36 - 44). Continue to Mount Zion to visit the House of the High Priest Caiaphas, where Jesus was questioned on the night of His betrayal (Matthew 26:57). Meditate on the events of the Last Supper as you visit the traditional location of the Upper Room (Mark 14:12-26). After lunch, wander through the excavations of the City of David. Explore Hezekiah’s Tunnel, an amazing engineering feat dug from either end and met in the middle! (Note: Those claustrophobic may want to meet the group at the other end of the tunnel!). Visit the Pool of Siloam, recently uncovered at the foot of the City.

Day 8 Day 8 - Leisure Day (Masada/Dead Sea Option)

Today you have free time to explore on your own, or you may choose to visit Masada and the Dead Sea (additional charge). Ascend by cable car to Masada, Herod’s legendary mountaintop fortress, which became the last desperate stronghold of the Jewish Zealots against the Romans. You can still look down on the remains of the Roman camps and the siege ramp below. End your day with a dip in the salt and mineral-laden waters of the Dead Sea.

Day 9 Day 9 - Jerusalem & the Old City

What travelers say about their tours to Israel

Travel tips for israel trips.

There are so many interesting things to do on our guided tours to Israel. You could float in the mineral-rich Dead Sea or take a cooking class with Israelis in Tel Aviv on our  Israel, Jordan & Egypt tour . You could also visit a kibbutz on our Israel Adventure Tour , and see how members work together on agricultural, technological, and industrial projects.

We offer package trips to Israel that explore Jewish heritage, Christian heritage, the wonders of Ancient Israel, and more. You’re bound to find an Israel tour package to fit any interest.

Every season has its benefits, so no matter when you visit Israel, there is something to do. Spring and fall bring milder weather, which is great for  adventure trips to Israel . If you’re looking to spend some time at the beach, summer is a great time to see Israel. And winter is perfect if you want to avoid the crowds. It can snow up north, so just pack a winter coat.

There are so many unforgettable things you can experience on our Israel tours. These are a few of our picks for the best places to visit in Israel:

  • The Western Wall.  Also known as the Wailing Wall, it’s the only remaining portion of the retaining wall that surrounded the Temple Mount. That’s where the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem were destroyed in 587-586 B.C. and 70 A.D., respectively. It’s a place filled with life, faith, and emotion—you won’t want to miss this site on our Israel tours.
  • Bethlehem.  On our  Christian Heritage Israel  tour, you can enter the Church of the Nativity. There, you’ll see a large silver star embedded in the ground to mark the exact spot where Christian text says Jesus was born.
  • Jerusalem’s Old City.  The neighborhood has four quarters: The Jewish Quarter, The Armenian Quarter, The Christian Quarter, and The Muslim Quarter. Each has incredible food, shopping, and people to meet. All of our Israel travel packages stop here.

Our group tours to Israel range between 10 to 14 days in duration, so you should have plenty of time to see and do the activities that appeal to you in the Holy Land.

For such a small state, Israel has a lot to offer. The biggest benefit of choosing one of our guided Israel tours is that we do all the planning for you. You’ll visit all the best spots without ever having to worry about where you’re going and how to get there. Each trip is led by an expert guide who will teach you all about the history and culture—and you might even make new friends in your group.

For more trip-planning tips see our Israel travel guide >

Israel is a religious place, so most establishments are fairly modest. You’ll want to bring some modest clothing to wear in main areas like Jerusalem, as well as in temples or churches. Women should pack a shawl or sweater to cover their heads and shoulders as well as a skirt or dress that hits below their knees. Men should bring pants and a shirt that covers their shoulders, too. Tank tops are a no-go at most local destinations, except for beaches and downtown Tel Aviv.

The North Americans Racing the 2024 Tour de France

There’s no Sepp Kuss, but that doesn’t mean that riders from the U.S. and Canada won’t make a big impact at this year’s Tour.

cycling ronde van vlaanderen race men

Unfortunately for American fans at this year’s Tour, there will be no Sepp Kuss . Still battling the effects of COVID-19, Kuss, who won the 2023 Vuelta a España, was taken off Visma-Lease a Bike’s roster for the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at the North Americans competing in the 2024 Tour de France:

Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech)

Premier Tech is a Canadian company, so it’s nice to see the team staying true to its identity by bringing three Canadians to the 2024 Tour de France. Boivin will be starting his fourth Tour in a row this year, and while he’s never recorded a high stage finish of his own, the 35-year-old is the exactly kind of selfless, strong, and experienced support rider a team needs while hunting for stage wins. If Israel-Premier Tech leaves the Tour with a stage victory (or two), expect Boivin to have played a role in making it happen.

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

topshot cycling fra dauphine

Gee exploded onto the scene in last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored six top-5 stage finishes including second-places finished on four stages in the Italian grand tour. It was only his first grand tour, but the then-25-year-old’s career also finished second overall in the Giro’s Points and King of the Mountains Classifications.

All those second-place finishes seem to have inspired the Canadian heading into 2024: he took the first WorldTour victory of his career by winning Stage 3 at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné–then hung around the top of the General Classification to finish third overall. But don’t expect him to shoot for a high GC finish at the Tour de France; he’s hunting for the stage victories that eluded him in last year’s Giro. And given the way he’s been riding, we won’t be surprised if he wins more than one.

Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech)

Houle has started and finished every edition of the Tour de France since 2019. At first he was purely a domestique, riding on behalf of his GC captains at Astana. But then he moved (along with Premier Tech, who formerly sponsored Astana) to Israel-Premier Tech and was offered more opportunities to ride for himself.

Well, he took full advantage in 2022, when he scored a breakaway stage win (in the Pyrenees, no less) on Stage 16–just a few days after finishing third on Stage 13. The 33-year-old will get more chances this year, and his experience will prove invaluable to guys like Gee, who’s riding his first Tour de France and looks to be the cornerstone of the team’s opportunistic plans.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

cycling fra dauphine

Even though he’s only 24-years-old, Jorgenson will be starting his third Tour de France this year, and his first since transferring from Movistar to Visma-Lease a Bike during the off-season. The kid from Idaho impressed everyone during his first two Tours, racing aggressively in pursuit of stage wins, coming close to winning a stage on multiple occasions.

But he’s reached new heights with Visma. First, he won Paris-Nice in early-March, defeating riders like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel to take the biggest win of his still-young career. A few weeks later he won Dwars door Vlaanderen, a cobbled semi-Classic in Belgium. But his biggest breakthrough came at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early-June, where he raced like a Tour de France contender, riding consistently throughout the entirety of the 8-day stage race and almost stealing the overall victory from Roglič on the final stage.

He’s heading to the Tour in support of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard. But if Vingegaard proves to be less competitive than the team hopes, Jorgenson could be given a chance to ride for himself–whether that means shooting for a high GC finish or a stage win we don’t exactly know. No matter what, Jorgenson is the most exciting rider American fans have had to root for in a while, someone who looks to have the makings of a future Tour de France champion.

Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost)

Quinn turned 24 in early-May and the American celebrated by winning the national road race championships in Charlestown, West Virginia nine days later. He then took his new stars-and-stripes jersey to the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he raced well enough throughout the week to have probably earned himself a spot on EF’s roster for the Tour de France.

This will be only the second grand tour of the American’s career, but we don’t expect the event to be too big for him. If he makes his team’s roster, expect to see him feature in a few breakaways, possibly as one of the riders looking to take an early lead in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition during the Tour’s hilly opening weekend.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Powless will be starting his fifth Tour de France on Saturday, and he’s raced all of them with EF Education-EasyPost. The 27-year-old’s best Tour finish was twelfth overall in 2021, and last year he spent twelve days in the polka dot jersey as the leader of the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition.

This year we’d love to see Powless commit to winning a stage, which means not worrying about the GC standings or wasting energy chasing KOM points early in the Tour. He needs to sit down with the race bible, identify three or four stages that suit him the best, and then make those stages the focus of his entire Tour de France, essentially racing them like a series of one-day races–with long, hard training rides in between. With that kind of approach, he’s a good bet to take EF Education’s first Tour de France stage victory since 2022.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Tour de France

7 rookies who will light up the tour de france, from a belgian 'bull' to a french featherweight: our pick of the fearless, fast debutants gunning to impress on the route between florence and nice..

Don't miss a moment of the 2024 Tour de France! Get recaps, insights, and exclusive takes with Velo's daily newsletter. >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Sign up today! .

The Tour de France is not like any other race. It’s the ultimate prestigious, pressure-cooker event, competing against the very best racers in the world in their top form. A young, inexperienced rider underestimates the challenge at his peril.

But then, there are some sparkling talents in the modern peloton who are like not any other riders. They are being blooded in the 2024 Tour, and they’re fearless and pushing for success.

Here’s a look at the raw diamonds being polished and refined over the next three weeks. From sprint stages to big breakaways, hilly transition tests, and mountain-packed days where the GC battle, there’s a contender for every scenario in this look at seven potential stars of the summer.

Juan Ayuso and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates)

Juan Ayuso

It’s hard to believe that Juan Ayuso is only 21 years old. He already has a Vuelta fourth place and third place finish to his name, achieved in 2023 and 2022 respectively. His teammate João Almeida has an equally impressive record, consistently in the top-10 in grand tour and one-week stage races in recent years.

Both will be expected to be among Tadej Pogačar’s trusted mountain men on UAE Team Emirates, supporting him and helping to burn off all but his hardiest rivals with a searing pace. They’ve already shown they have the ability and consistency to finish inside the top-five themselves and can hold their own against the clock.

Ayuso is also a surefire white jersey contender. Having “Pogi” as leader takes the pressure off the Spaniard and means he flies under the radar while learning the ropes. Either rider, if let off the leash, could surprise the cycling world as a possible secondary option who finishes on the podium, à la Adam Yates last year.

Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost)

Digging deep in this year's Strade Bianche. Ben Healy won't be wearing the distinctive Irish national champion's kit in his debut Tour, having missed the defence of his title to be fresh for the Tour. But his riding style and aggression should make him unmistakeable anyway. (Photo by Chris Auld)

The Irishman with the earring burst onto the scene in the spring of 2023, finishing second at Amstel Gold Race and taking a Giro d’Italia stage win with a 50km solo ride.

It’s a case of “catch Ben Healy if you can” for his rivals: he loves an aggressive race and any aerodynamic advantage. Expect him to be going up the road on hilly days. The harder, the better for the EF Education-EasyPost attacker.

He has been working on his heat acclimatization for the sweltering conditions and his recent Tour of Slovenia win was a reminder of his knack for timing a move and staying away from the bunch.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)

Remco Evenepoel

It’s easy to forget it, but yes, Remco is a Tour de France newbie. The Tour de France is about the last big race he hasn’t done, having wowed and soloed to victory in many other prestigious ones. He’s already a world road champion and two-time Liège-Bastogne-Liège winner. This prodigy knows what he’s doing and wins races – 55 already – like they’re going out of fashion.

The 2022 Vuelta victor also has a grand tour to his name, but he has shown a few hints of limitations in the high mountains, dropping out of the maillot jaune  on the way to seventh at the recent Dauphiné and capitulating at the Vuelta last year, crashing out of the GC conversation.

He might have dubbed his team “underdogs” pre-race, but the Belgian cycling superstar is a heavyweight. He’s here to compete for the yellow jersey. Top-five here would be a good result, learning more lessons along the way. Expect a spell in the  maillot blanc  too.

Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny)

This fast-finishing kid from Walloon farming country is talked about in hushed tones in his native Belgium as a possible successor to Tom Boonen. He can put out incredible power, able to push over 1,600 watts at a finish after 200km in the saddle.

He arrives in great confidence and wearing the Belgian tricolore , beating Jasper Philipsen to the title no less. “I can learn a lot here,” De Lie said in his media conference pre-race. This Tour promises to turn around a season where he had so-so spring form, suffering with Lyme disease in March.

If you want a new sprint name to cause a surprise, look no further than “the Bull of Lescheret.”

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

Derek Gee / Critérium du Dauphiné

If “Gee Whizz” doesn’t become his nickname, I’ll be very disappointed, because the Canadian former track pursuiter seems able to do pretty much anything.

He was the talk of the Giro d’Italia last year, getting into breakaways like it was nothing, having a string of second places and near misses. Israel-Premier Tech moved fast to tear up his original deal and give him a whopping six-year contract.

Last month, Derek Gee became “Derek GC”, finishing third at the Critérium du Dauphiné and taking an opportunistic stage win. While it’s difficult to see the 75kg Ottawa man notching up a top-10 finish in his debut Tour, this powerhouse will be one of their frontmen chasing a stage win.

Keep one eye on teammate and fellow rookie, Stevie Williams too. This year, the Briton has been making up for lost time, winning a maiden WorldTour stage race title at the Tour Down Under and following it up with Flèche Wallonne victory in freezing, wintry conditions.

Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ)

French cycling needs a new winning hope and heartthrob now that Thibaut Pinot has said au revoir , and this 20-year-old is just the ticket.

Briefly the leader of the Vuelta a España last year in his very first grand tour, Martinez is a 50kg lightweight who makes high mountains look like molehills. This punchy young prospect been setting the scene alight with five one-day wins this season, the most prestigious being the Trofeo Laigueglia.

The little man from Cannes can be a cycling star, just like his relatives: father Miguel is a former Olympic and world champion, his grandfather Marino was the King of the Mountains in the 1978 edition. Don’t expect him to soar into the top 10 GC just yet though.

“The goal is to chase stage wins, there will be necessary days where I’m in the gruppetto, preserving my energy,” he said in Groupama-FDJ’s pre-race press conference.

Dan David Prize Names 9 Historians as Winners of Prestigious Award

Nine historians have been awarded the prestigious Dan David Prize

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Dan David Prize on Tuesday named nine historians as the 2024 winners of the prestigious award, with each of them receiving $300,000 to advance their research.

The winners' areas of study are vast, from the birth of democracy in India, to the underground archive that Jews kept in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and the bones of Vikings found in Britain.

The Dan David Prize board said it recognized work that “illuminates the past in bold and creative ways." An awards ceremony already took place in Italy.

“To decode the complexities of the present and face future challenges, we need to first of all better understand our past,” said Ariel David, a board member of the prize and the son of its founder, Romanian businessman Dan David. “By using innovative methods and source materials, our winners have offered us precious new historical insight."

This year’s names include Keisha Blain from Brown University, a historian of the 20th century United States and a columnist with MSNBC, and Cat Jarman, an archaeologist and historian.

Blain’s research focuses on the roles working-class Black women played in the U.S. civil rights movement. Jarman uses scientific techniques such as carbon dating and DNA analysis to tell stories about groups like the Viking armies and English kings.

Past winners of the prize, which David set up in 2001 and is headquartered at Tel Aviv University, have included Canadian author Margaret Atwood, the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert.

The award has since shifted to focus on historians in the early and middle stages of their career with the idea that the prize will greatly enhance their research abilities.

The prize was also awarded this year to Benjamin Brose from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Cécile Fromont from Harvard University and Daniel Jütte from New York University, as well as Stuart McManus from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The remaining recipients are Kathryn Olivarius from Stanford University, Katarzyna Person from the Warsaw Ghetto Museum and Tripurdaman Singh from the Geneva Graduate Institute.
