Travel Advisory January 2, 2024

Colombia - level 3: reconsider travel.

Reissued with updates to the country summary.

Reconsider travel due to  crime  and  terrorism . Exercise increased caution due to civil unrest  and  kidnapping . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Do Not Travel to:

  • Arauca, Cauca (excluding Popayán), and Norte de Santander departments due to crime and terrorism.
  • The Colombia-Venezuela border region due to crime, kidnapping, and risk of detention when crossing into Venezuela from Colombia.

Country Summary: Violent crime, such as homicide, assault, and armed robbery, is widespread. Organized criminal activities, such as extortion, robbery, and kidnapping, are common in some areas.

Terrorist groups and criminal organizations continue operating and carrying out attacks in Colombia. They may attack with little or no warning, targeting transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, police stations, military facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, airports, other public areas, and U.S. government facilities.

Demonstrations occur regularly throughout the country and can be about a variety of political or economic issues. They can shutdown roads and highways, often without prior notice or estimated reopening timelines. Demonstrations and road closures may significantly reduce access to public transportation and may disrupt travel within and between cities. Protests can become violent and can result in fatalities and injuries.

U.S. direct-hire government employees must adhere to the noted restrictions:

  • They are not permitted to travel by road between most cities.
  • Colombia’s land border areas are off-limits to U.S. government personnel unless specifically authorized.
  • They may not use motorcycles.
  • They may not hail street taxis or use public buses.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Colombia.

If you decide to travel to Colombia:

  • Avoid protest areas and crowds.
  • Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your plans based on new information.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on  Facebook  and  Twitter
  • Review the  Country Security Report  for Colombia.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .

Arauca, Cauca, and Norte de Santander Departments – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Violent crime, including armed robbery and homicide, is widespread. Terrorist groups are active in some parts.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens as U.S. government-personnel travel to these areas is severely restricted due to security concerns.

Colombia - Venezuela Border – Level 4: Do Not Travel

U.S. citizens are advised not to travel to the border of Colombia and Venezuela. U.S. citizens are at risk of detention when crossing into Venezuela.

The Colombia-Venezuela border is not clearly marked, and U.S. citizens should not go near the border due to the risk of crossing into Venezuela accidentally.

U.S. citizens attempting to enter Venezuela without a visa have been charged with terrorism and other serious crimes and detained for long periods. For more information, see the Venezuela Travel Advisory.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Travelers must complete Migración Colombia’s Online Check-Mig Form  within 72 hours of boarding an inbound or outbound flight from Colombia. There is no fee to complete the form.

All U.S. citizens who do not also hold Colombian citizenship must present a valid U.S. passport to enter and leave Colombia. U.S. citizens do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist or business stay of 90 days or less, or for cumulative stays of 180 days or less per calendar year. Before your 90-day stay expires, you may request an extension of up to 90 additional days from the Colombian immigration authority ( Migración Colombia ). You will face a fine if you remain in Colombia longer than allowed, and you may not be able to leave Colombia until the fine is paid.

Any traveler entering with a Colombian visa of any type (as opposed to visa-free entry described above) with more than three months’ validity must register the visa at a Migración Colombia office or online within 15 days of arrival in Colombia or face fines. You may be denied entry to Colombia if you do not have a return ticket. Visit the  Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism  website for the most current visa information.

Visit the  CDC Traveler View  website for vaccination information, and the  Colombian Ministry of Health  website for Yellow Fever vaccination requirements.

Special Entry/Exit Instructions for U.S. Citizens Born in Colombia:  All Colombian citizens—regardless of dual citizenship—MUST present a valid, non-expired Colombian passport to enter and exit Colombia. Colombian citizens traveling with non-Colombian passports may be unable to depart the country until they obtain a Colombian passport.

Be aware that any person born in Colombia or of Colombian parentage may be considered a Colombian citizen, even if never documented as such.

Be aware as well that all U.S. citizens, regardless of dual citizenship, must present a valid U.S. passport upon returning to the United States. Persons who are both U.S. and Colombian citizens MUST travel between these countries with both passports, presenting the Colombian passport upon departing Colombia and the U.S. passport upon arrival in the United States.

Additional Exit Requirements for Minors:   To prevent international child abduction, Colombia has implemented special exit procedures for Colombian children under 18 (including dual nationals) who depart the country alone, without both parents, or without a legal guardian.  For detailed information regarding exit requirements for minors with Colombian nationality please visit Migración Colombia's website  (in Spanish only).

Lost or Stolen Passport: If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Colombia, you must  obtain a new one before leaving the country. You can report the loss or theft on the Colombian National Police  website .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Colombia.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism : Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is focused on unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting events, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Terrorist groups and criminal organizations continue operating and carrying out attacks in Colombia.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime : Crimes and scams against tourists, and those perceived to be wealthy, are common and well-coordinated in urban areas, including in affluent neighborhoods. Firearms and knives are prevalent in Colombia and often used in muggings and robberies under the threat of violence. Drive-by motorcyclist snatchings of cell phones, bags, and valuables are extremely common. Victims are often identified well in advance of the robbery based on visible jewelry, high value wristwatches, and general attire while in public places such as shopping malls, restaurants, and airports.

Narco-trafficking groups, including the Clan del Golfo frequently engage in violence against civilians and security forces.

Dating App Robberies/Drugging/Homicides: Criminals use dating apps to lure victims to meet in places such as hotels, restaurants, and bars, and then later assault and rob them. Numerous U.S. citizens in Colombia have been drugged, robbed, and even killed by their Colombian dates. You should be cautious if using dating apps in Colombia. If meeting with a stranger, you should strongly consider meeting only in public places and avoiding isolated locations, such as residences or hotel rooms, where crimes are most likely to occur. Tell a friend or family member of your plans, including where you are going, details of the person you are meeting, and the app you used to meet them.

ATMs : There have been instances of fraudulent charges or withdrawals from accounts due to “skimmed” cards. If you choose to use credit or debit cards, you should regularly check your account to ensure there are no unauthorized transactions. Travelers should limit the amount of cash they carry in public, exercise caution when withdrawing cash from ATMs, and avoid ATMs located on the street. ATMs inside shopping malls or other protected locations are preferable.

Taxis : U.S. government employees are prohibited from hailing taxis on the street due to the risk of assault or robbery. U.S. citizens have been killed during robberies while using taxis. Use a dispatch service or cell phone app whenever possible.

Disabling Drugs : The Embassy receives regular reports of criminals using drugs to temporarily incapacitate unsuspecting victims and then rob or assault them. Scopolamine, a fast-acting incapacitating drug, is often surreptitiously applied to food, drinks, and hand sanitizer vials by criminals to rob or assault their victims. Victims of scopolamine-related crimes are often targeted in bars, night clubs, or through dating apps. Avoid leaving food or drinks unattended at a bar or restaurant, and refuse offers of something to eat or drink from a stranger.

Ayahuasca/Hallucinogens: Traditional hallucinogens, often referred to as ayahuasca, can be marketed to tourists as “spiritual cleansing,” and typically contain dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a strong psychedelic that is illegal in the United States and many other countries. Risks to hallucinogen users while intoxicated include robbery, assault, illness, or death. People claiming to be shamans or spiritual practitioners are neither licensed nor regulated.

Demonstrations :   Protests and demonstrations occur frequently, particularly in Bogota. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable; avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams :   See the  Department of State and the  FBI pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Colombia. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Lucrative sales
  • Gold purchase
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments
  • Posing as U.S. government officials soliciting payment for services.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by dialing 123 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +57 (601) 275-2000 or +57 (601) 275-4021 after hours. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance. Help in domestic violence situations is available, in Spanish, by calling 155 (*155 from a cell phone).

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities are uncommon. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified by the government or by recognized authorities. In the event of an injury, adequate medical treatment may only be available in or near major cities. First responders may only be able to provide basic medical treatment and may be unable to access areas outside of major cities. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Venezuelan Border : The U.S. Department of State has categorized Venezuela as Level 4: Do Not Travel due to crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure, kidnapping, and the arrest and detention of U.S. citizens without due process or fair trial guarantees. U.S. citizens are at risk of detention when crossing into Venezuela from Colombia. The Colombia-Venezuela border is not clearly marked, and U.S. citizens should not go near the border due to the risk of crossing into Venezuela accidentally and being detained for illegal entry. If you still choose to travel to Venezuela, do not attempt to enter Venezuela without a visa. Visas are not available upon arrival. U.S. citizens attempting to enter Venezuela without a visa have been charged with terrorism and other serious crimes and detained for long periods. The Maduro regime does not notify the U.S. government of the detention of U.S. citizens and the U.S. government is not granted access to those citizens. The U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties : You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, imprisoned, or expelled.

Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Customs Regulations : If you enter or exit Colombia possessing cash or other financial instruments worth more than $10,000USD, you must declare them and be able to prove the legal source of the funds. The Embassy has received reports of customs officials confiscating high-value jewelry that was not declared upon entry.

Colombian law prohibits tourists and business travelers from bringing firearms and ammunition into Colombia. Colombian law also restricts the importation of plants and animals (and some related products).

Artifacts : Colombian law forbids the export of pre-Columbian objects and other artifacts protected by cultural patrimony statutes. U.S. customs officials are obliged to seize pre-Columbian objects and certain colonial religious artwork brought into the United States.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Colombia are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long pre-trial detention and lengthy prison sentences under harsh conditions. Colombian law may require that released offenders serve a lengthy period of parole in-country, during which the offender is given no housing and may lack permission to work.

Colombia uses comprehensive screening procedures to detect narcotics smuggling at its international airports. Travelers are occasionally questioned, searched, fingerprinted, and/or asked to submit to an abdominal X-ray upon arrival or departure. Most airport inspectors do not speak English.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods : Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website   for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers : See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers : Colombia has one of the strongest legal frameworks in Latin America defending the rights of LGBTQI+ people; however, in practice protections remain a long way from full enforcement and harassment persists, especially in rural areas. In many parts of Colombia, violence against trans people exceeds levels of violence against any other members of the LGBTQI+ community. Criminals do utilize dating apps to target potential victims of theft, so travelers should use caution on such apps. Certain regions, especially in rural areas, experience higher instances of harassment/violence against LGBTQI+ communities. In 2022, there was an uptick of homicides specifically targeting gay men in Medellín. LGBTQI+ associated and friendly establishments exist mostly in metropolitan areas, especially Cartagena, Medellin, and Bogota.

See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities : The law in Colombia prohibits discrimination against persons with physical or mental disabilities, but the law is not fully enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities is not as prevalent as in the United States. Many public places and transportation are not adapted to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities. The most common types of accessible facilities may include restrooms, ramps, and elevators. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure, including sidewalks, intersections, buses, and taxis. There is a significant difference between the capital (and other large cities) and the rest of the country.

Repair and replacement parts for aids/equipment/devices are available. Sign language interpreters or personal assistants are available for hire.

Students : See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers : See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Cruise Ship Passengers : See our travel tips for  Cruise Ship Passengers .

For emergency services in Colombia, dial 123 from any mobile phone or land line.

Ambulance services  are available in larger cities, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills .  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the   U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Travelers can check with the Embassy of Colombia in the United States to ensure the medication is legal in Colombia.

Vaccinations :  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Visit the  CDC Traveler View  website for vaccination information, and the  Colombia Ministry of Health  website for Yellow Fever vaccination requirements. Childhood vaccinations are required by Colombian law for children ages six and under.  Visit the Ministry for Health and Public Safety website for a list of required childhood vaccinations.

Further Health Information :

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Air Quality : Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health Facilities in General :

  • Adequate health facilities are available throughout the country, but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment upfront prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is frequently, but not always, available.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery :

  • U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died during or after having cosmetic or other elective surgery.
  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for information on medical tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to Colombia.
  • We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications or repatriation in the case of untimely death.
  • Your legal options in cases of malpractice are very limited in Colombia.
  • Although Colombia has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Colombia, carefully research the doctor and recovery facility you plan to use. Make sure that emergency medical facilities are available, and that professionals are accredited and qualified. Share all health information (e.g. medical conditions, medications, allergies) with your doctor before surgery.

Pharmaceuticals :

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas.  Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients.  Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.
  • Colombia does not allow the sale of certain psychiatric medications.  Travelers should carry a sufficient supply for their trips. Please review the Colombian government’s open data website for drug unavailability.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy :

  • If you are considering traveling to Colombia to have a child through the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our  ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is currently neither prohibited nor permitted under Colombian law. Although surrogacy agencies/clinics claim surrogacy is legal in Colombia, there is no legal framework for foreigners or same-sex couples to pursue surrogacy. As a result, surrogacy agreements between foreign or same sex intending parents and gestational mothers may not be enforced by Colombian courts.

Water Quality :

  • In rural areas, tap water may not be potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Altitude :

  • Many cities in Colombia, such as Bogota, are at high altitude. Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and take precautions before you travel. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Travel to High Altitudes .

Adventure Travel :

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

General Health :

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Chikungunya
  • Yellow Fever

In Chocó, Nariño, and Córdoba, use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents, and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers in the Amazon region, even for short stays.

HIV/AIDS: Travelers should bring medication sufficient for their entire stay.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Colombia.

Air Quality :

  • Air pollution is a problem in several major cities in Colombia. Consider the impact smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary.
  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety : Due to the security environment in Colombia and poor infrastructure, U.S. government employees and their families are not permitted to travel by road between most major cities. They also cannot use inter-city or intra-city bus transportation or travel by road outside urban areas at night. Follow these same precautions.

Road travel in Colombia can be dangerous, especially at night. Some roads are poorly maintained, or vulnerable to heavy rains and mudslides. Mountain roads may lack safety features such as crash barriers or guard rails, and conditions are frequently made more treacherous by heavy fog. Highways are often unmarked and unlit, and do not have signs indicating destinations. Slow-moving buses and trucks frequently stop in the middle of the road unexpectedly. In the countryside, livestock is often herded along roads or left to graze on roadsides. Due to a lack of sidewalks, roads are also used by pedestrians.

The use of motorcycles and bicycles is widespread throughout Colombia. U.S. government employees may not use motorcycles because of security concerns.

Traffic Laws : Traffic laws are often ignored and rarely enforced, creating dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers in a private vehicle. Car seats are mandatory for children, and a child under ten years old is not permitted to ride in the front seat. It is against the law to talk on a cellular phone while driving.

If you are involved in an accident, you MUST remain at the scene without moving your vehicle until the authorities arrive. This rule is strictly enforced and moving a vehicle or leaving the scene of an accident may constitute an admission of guilt under Colombian law.

Public Transportation : Do not hail taxis on the street. U.S. government employees may not hail street taxis or use public transportation in Colombia because of security concerns. U.S. citizens have been killed during robberies while using taxis. Use a dispatch service or transportation app whenever possible.

See our  Road Safety page for more information. Visit the website of the Colombia national authority responsible for road safety, the  Instituto Nacional de Vias .

Aviation Safety Oversight : The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Colombia’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel : Mariners planning travel to Colombia should also check for U.S. maritime  advisories  and  alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

Tourist Vessels : Exercise caution when embarked on small tourist boats off the northern coast between Cartagena and the nearby islands. During the months of December and January, the seas off the northern coast can be dangerous for small boats. U.S. citizens have died in boating accidents. Check for lifejackets and safety equipment before boarding a tourist vessel.

How to Fill Out the Check Mig Colombia Form (It’s Free! Don’t Pay for it!)

The Check Mig Colombia Immigration form, also called the Colombia Check Mig Form, officially titled the Check-mig form by Migración Colombia, and sometimes simply called the Checkmig or the Mig Colombia Form is the digital Colombia entry form all travelers are required to complete.

It’s been a bit maligned since it was adopted in 2020 for being buggy, and I’ve seen countless comments in Facebook groups and online travel message boards about it.

I’ve also seen a lot of people comment in those forums that they paid for it.

In fact, that was the main reason I decided to write this post.

The Colombia Check Mig form is totally free to complete.

Seriously, please don’t fall for the sleazy websites trying to charge for it!

We traveled in and out of Colombia frequently in 2020-2022 and had to fill out this Migración Colombia form lots of times, and we definitely never paid for it!

We did, however, deal with some of the Check Mig form’s finicky, um, let’s call them quirks.

On several of the occasions we had to fill out the Check Mig, it gave us trouble. Either one of us couldn’t access it successfully, it would crash and we’d have to redo it, or we wouldn’t get the confirmation email.

This was especially the case under the old Checkmig Colombia form.

However, many of these issues were addressed with an update in late 2023.

Still, however, I see people having some issues with it, and I also still see people paying for it. The other thing I see is some people claiming you don’t need to do it anymore.

The truth is while it’s possible you won’t get asked for it, you are still technically supposed to do it, so it’s best to do it and avoid a problem, you know like not being able to board your flight, which is kind of a big problem.

Also, there’s still no charge for it, and you don’t get any extra value out of paying to have some “visa service” do it for you.

Below, I’m going to go over just what the Check Mig form is, why it’s still best practice to fill it out, how to complete your Check-Mig Colombia form for free, and then I’ll go through a step by step guide to the Checkmig Colombia form using the updated form and confirmed to still be working as of the last update to this post in April 2024.

There is no Check Mig Fee in Colombia.

The Check Mig form is entirely free to complete, and the Colombian government does not charge to complete the form, nor does it charge for tourist visas, nor is there a Colombia entry fee for most foreign visitors.

There is a biometrics entry fee for Canadian tourists, which you can read about here, but that is separate from the Check Mig form.

So, to be clear, the Check Mig fee is zero, zilch, nada !

Why Do Some Websites Charge a Fee to Complete the Colombia Check Mig Form?

Umm, because they are greedy sleaze balls, I guess.

Look, what happened here is a few clever, and I’d say unscrupulous, folks figured out they could create webpages that appear in search results that give the impression that you do need to pay to complete the Mig Check Colombia form.

What you are really doing though is paying them to complete it for you.

Look, there are plenty of services that it’s totally worth paying a fee for to save some time.

However, you’re going to have to give these people the same information you’ll need to just do the form yourself, so you aren’t really going to save any time, and frankly, those sites are bordering on deceptive.

It can be a pain, but you can complete the Check Mig Colombia migration form in English , and it should take you 10 minutes or less .

So, there’s really no reason to pay to have someone else complete the form for you!

By the way, if would like to pay for something that actually adds some value, consider planning your trip to Colombia with BnB Colombia Tours. I’ve partnered with them to provide readers of this site with a discount on their tailor made, customized Colombia trips.

They won’t complete your Check-Mig for you, but they will make sure you are on the best tours and excursions during your trip! Fill out the form here and they will start working to make your dream trip to Colombia a reality.

If you’re more of a DIY trip planner, well, you’re also in luck. You can get 20% off any of their individual tours here with the code ExploreColombia20.

And, of course, I’ve also got tons of helpful information on this site to help you plan your trip.

Obviously, I have loads of helpful tips on Cartagena, like tips on where to stay , how best to enjoy the lovely Rosario Islands nearby, and a list of over 75 things to do . If you landed here, you might find my guide to the Cartagena airport useful too!

If you’re traveling elsewhere in Colombia, be sure to check out the Other Destinations section or just give the site a search!

Where Should I Go to Complete the Check Mig Form for Free?

Make sure you go to the official app here: https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/en . That is the English page, but you can change the language at the top if you like.

If you want to be extra sure you’re in the right place, like if you search in Google, make sure you are on a page that ends in .gov.co. Be aware that at least one of the scammy websites has a web address that makes it look very official using Check Mig and Colombia in it.

To be perfectly honest, the form is pretty intuitive and the English translation is mostly very good.

So, if you just want to complete it on your own, head on over there. Make sure you’ve got your flight, hotel, and passport info, and that you complete it any time between 72 and 1 hour before your departure time.

And, do keep in mind you’re meant to complete it when you leave Colombia too.

However, with this post, I’m trying to beat those less scrupulous sites at their own game and actually offer you some real value, all while not charging for it, except for the handful of cents I get from your eyes seeing some ads.

So, below, I’m going to give an explanation of what the Check Mig Form is, address if you still need to complete it, go over all the information you need to have at hand to complete it, and finally go through it step by step with screenshots.

So, if you do need some extra help with the Colombia Check Mig form read on or click back over here.

What is the Colombia Check-Mig Form?

The Check-Mig form is basically a digital Colombian immigration form.

It requires travelers to enter their travel information, such as how they will enter the country, their passport information, and where they will stay.

The entity responsible for the Check Migis Migración Colombia, the country’s immigration authority.

It first started being used as travel reopened after the pandemic, at least in part to create a contactless immigration form.

The fact it’s being continued even after all other travel restrictions have been lifted makes it appear that it’s here to stay, basically replacing the old school little slips you would fill out. This makes all the information digitally available to immigration agents when you arrive.

I’d imagine it saves a lot of paper and at least a few flight attendants being asked if they have pens too.

The Check Mig form is still a requirement for all travelers, including Colombian citizens and residents, entering Colombia by air or sea. It is not required for entering over land borders.

Now, I’ve seen a lot of people claiming in Facebook groups and other online message boards they were not asked to show it or that they didn’t complete it and they had no problems.

So, part of the reason the form exists is that the information is in the computer and the immigration agent just sees it when they scan your passport, so they generally won’t ask to see it because it already shows for them.

As far as people entering without having done it, to be honest, I don’t doubt it. The truth is an immigration agent can still ask you the information they need to know and I think it’s highly unlikely they’d deny you entry to the country.

However, why take that chance?

Also, if you run into trouble for not completing it, it will probably be with your airline. While I’ve seen people claim they didn’t do it, I’ve also seen people claim airlines refused them boarding without it.

So, again, it takes 10 minutes and maybe a causes mild headache if it’s acting up.

I don’t see a good reason to risk not doing it and being turned away at the gate, having to rush and pray to the travel gods it’s not acting up right at the time the airline makes you do it, or possibly even having to change flights.

You need to complete the Check-Mig Form between 1 and 72 hours prior to your flight .

The form becomes available to complete 72 hours before your departure time, and you must have it complete at least 1 hour before your departure time.

You need to complete the Check-Mig Colombia form for arrival to and departure from Colombia to or from abroad, so be sure you keep it in mind for both ways of travel.

Due to occasional down times, confusion, and the mistakes, I strongly suggest doing it at least 24 hours prior to your flight.

Honestly, I would probably just make it an extra step as part of checking in for your flight. You’re already going to have all your travel info and documents you need to complete the Check Mig form, so you won’t need to search for it later.

At least with the old site, I always got much better results on my laptop than on my phone too, but the new version of the site seems to work better on phones. There were a couple occasions where the old site also gave Susana trouble on her iPhone that’s much better than my cheap Samsung, but it seemed to work ok on mine, so who knows.

So, my suggestion is to do this from the comfort and calm of your home the day before your flight, not trying to do it in the airport as you are checking in and dropping your bags when you might get flustered and frustrated, especially if the Check Mig app decides to be finicky right at that moment.

What Information Do I Need for the Check Mig Form?

You’ll pretty much need all your travel information to fill out the Migration Colombia Check-Mig Form.

Specifically, you’ll need the following information to complete the Check-Mig Form:

  • Your City/Port of Entry into Colombia
  • Your Travel Date
  • Your Flight Number, Airline, and Departure City
  • Your Passport Number
  • The Address and Phone Number of Where You’ll Be Staying

Common Issues with the Check Mig App and How to Address Them

Here are a few common issues I see asked about.

What should I do if the Check Mig App isn’t working?

This is the main reason why I’d try to do it at least 24 hours before your flight. That way if it’s not working, you can just try again an hour or two later. Most of the time, you’ll probably be fine that way.

If you’ve tried multiple times and it’s still not working, or you’re getting some kind of error, I’d try to screenshot that and be ready to explain it. Because the form has a bit of a reputation, it should probably be ok.

What should I do if I don’t get the email confirmation for the Check Mig Form?

Wait a bit.

In my personal experience, I’ve seen the email come through immediately, and I’ve also seen it come through an hour or so later.

I’ve also seen people report never getting it at all.

A good fail safe here is to try to remember to screen shot and download the confirmation when you actually complete it too, just in case the email is delayed or doesn’t come.

You can also check to see it and should be able to redownload it if you go back to the start page here: https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/en at the bottom where it says Review Check Mig.

What should I put in the origin/destination country Check Mig form?

This is a really common question I see, and there is a bit of ambiguity with the box on the Check Mig for Origin/Destination country.

You’ll find this Origin/Destination country box on the page where you enter your flight info.

The first bit of ambiguity is if they want your origin or destination. You should put your origin when entering Colombia and your destination when leaving.

I’ve always understood this as the country and city where your trip begins (or ends when departing). So, the city your flight into Colombia arrives to should populate automatically when you enter your flight info.

However, if you’re taking a connecting flight from somewhere else first, you can put that as your origin (or destination).

Another point of confusion here is city names may not be translated properly or still be in Spanish. Your home city also might not be listed. In that case, I’d just put the closest bigger city, capital of your state/province, or just the origin of your flight into Colombia.

Step By Step Guide to Completing the Check-Mig Form

Ok, now that we’ve covered what the Colombian migration form known as Check Mig is and gone over some common questions and issues as well as why you definitely should not pay for it, I’ll walk you through step by step completing Colombia’s Check-Mig form, complete with screenshots from the CheckMig App.

I’ve got to say, the updated platform is a much smoother experience than the old one!

Keep in mind this form was adopted in late 2023, around the same time I put this article together originally in August 2023, and I’ve confirmed it all looks like below as of the last update in April 2024.

It does look a good bit different from the old form though, so if it looks different from what you’ve completed before, don’t worry! Just make sure you are in fact on the official site and not one of those rip off sites.

I should also give the full disclaimer that I am not a legal expert, lawyer, agent of the Colombian government, or immigration/visa expert.

There are a few ambiguous parts of the form like the one I mentioned above, and I’m representing how I interpret it and would fill it out but cannot guarantee that is correct for your situation, so please don’t construe this as legal advice or any sort of official instruction from the Colombian immigration authorities.

Step 1: Enter the Form

If you clicked the link above, you should see a page that looks like the image below.

You’ll see the option to complete your Check-Mig Colombia Form, to say you are a frequent traveler, or to double check if you have completed your Check Mig form and download it for your records.

Note, if you need to change the language, you can do so in the drop down menu at the top right of the screen. Spanish, French, and English are available at the time of this writing.

To complete your Colombia Mig Check, you’re going to want to click where it says “Do Checkmig” under Do your checkmig.

See, pretty intuitive!

Screenshot of the start screen of the Check-Mig Colombia app with three options.

Step 2: Entry or Exit?

You should get a screen that looks similar to the screenshot below that asks about your journey after clicking there.

You’ll need to select if you are entering Colombia or exiting Colombia (remember, you do need to complete the Check-Mig Colombia for departure on your flight back home too!)

Then you’ll select your form of entry, which for the vast majority of you I assume will be Air.

Then, hit continue.

Pretty simple so far!

Screenshot of the Check-Mig Colombia site on the page of type of journey and some checkboxes.

Step 3: Entering Your Travel Information

Next, you should get a screen that looks like the one below on your Check-Mig Colombia form titled Travel Information.

First, you’ll need to select if you’re coming on a commercial or private flight.

Then, you’ll select the city from a drop down list where you’ll be entering the country (For example, Cartagena!).

Next, you’ll choose the date of your flight.

You’ll notice it will only let you select dates within that 72 hour time frame. Then next to that, you’ll fill in your flight number. Put only the number, not any letters or initials of the airline.

Once you put in your flight number, the spaces under the question “From which city the flight comes?,” the name of the airline, and the city box next to it should all fill in automatically, at least for commercial flights.

Screenshot of the Colombia Check-Mig website with Travel Information at the top and boxes for the user to complete.

If it doesn’t autofill, you might want to double check you’ve got your flight number correct.

Finally, at the bottom of this screen, there’s a space to fill out your origin/destination country and city. I have always interpreted that to mean your original start point or final end point of travel.

So, in the example above, assuming I am flying out of Miami, I would put United States and Columbia, for my home town of Columbia, SC (yup, that’s right, I grew up in Columbia with a U and spent a decade living in Colombia with an O and I’d love for you to check out my South Carolina Explorer site too!)

Now, like I mentioned above, here’s where you might have an issue.

For the longest time on the old form, when selecting the country of origin, even on the Check-Mig form in English, United States didn’t appear and you’d have to select Estados Unidos (United States in Spanish). This was frequently a point of confusion for people.

The new iteration of the form fixes that and does list United States in the drop down list on the English form.

However, many of the cities still have their states names in Spanish. So, in my case, Columbia, Carolina del Sur. There are a few little mistakes in translation such as St. Luis for St. Louis too.

Also, not all cities appear.

If your home city doesn’t appear, I would just choose the next closest major city, your home state alone if it appears (some do, some don’t), or just the option that says Estados Unidos, Estados Unidos, and don’t stress about it.

You should end up with something that looks like the following photo.

If all looks good, hit continue, and we are well on our way to completing this Check-Mig form!

Screenshot of the Check Mig App for Colombia showing spaces for travel information filled out showing a flight and origin city.

Step 4: Personal Information

Next, you’ll get a page asking for your personal information.

It should look like the on in the image below.

Most of this is pretty self-explanatory and straight forward.

You may notice the first and second first name and first and second last name boxes.

In Colombia and most Latin American countries, people are given two first names (or a first and what we in the states think of as a middle name) and they use both their father’s and mother’s names as last names.

The second first name and second last name boxes are not required, so don’t stress about them if you don’t have a second last name.

Screenshot of the Migracion Colombia Check In form with a page titled personal information and boxes for the user to complete.

Do make sure you put in your last name first as that first last name box is easy to confuse to be asking for your first name if you’re reading quickly/skimming the form.

Also, be sure to enter your email correctly, so you can get the confirmation just in case you need it!

Then select your reason for travel from the drop down list (for most, probably tourism).

Hit the I’m not a robot, and continue on…

Step 5: Where You’ll Be Staying in Colombia

Next, you’ll get to the page that says “Hosting Information.”

It should look like the image below.

This is where you’ll need the information for where you’ll be staying upon arrival in Colombia.

If you’re filling out the form for departing Colombia, this page is skipped.

Here, you’ll enter the city where you will be staying.

Screenshot of a Colombia Mig form saying Hosting data at the top and spaces for address and phone number of a hotel.

At the time of me doing this run through, the box for the address also has a question about the city above it, but you’ll want to list the address of the hotel, airbnb, or wherever else you’ll be staying followed by the phone number in the box next to it.

If you will be staying in different hotels, or traveling through different cities in Colombia, just put the information for where you’ll be staying the night you arrive. I would make sure you have the information on other places you plan to stay handy when you actually arrive as well since you could be asked though.

Step 6: Questionnaire

Next, you will be presented with a question or series of questions.

There used to be questions here about entering with a minor, if you had symptoms of Covid, and a few others if I recall correctly.

When running through it now, it only asked me if I had $10,000 USD in cash or not (I wish!). It’s possible your questions may vary though.

Screenshot of the Colombia Mig-Check Form title questions with regulations below and a question related to money with boxes to check si or no.

I also did not complete a full form for exiting the country, so it might ask about removing national heritage and archeological artifacts and things of that nature when you complete the Check Mig Form for departure from Colombia.

Interestingly enough, my answer choices were in Spanish even though for the most part the translation on this version of the Check-Mig is much better than the old version.

If your Spanish is a bit rusty, Si=yes and No=no .

Step 7: Accept Terms and Conditions

Next, you’ll have to accept the terms and conditions.

The actual checked statement was also in Spanish for me.

Once you check it, the yellow box to click to continue should appear.

Screenshot of the Check Mig Colombia Form asking to accept the terms and conditions with a check box.

Step 8: Download Your Check-Mig (Important!)

Next, you’ll get a confirmation that your Check-Mig form has been submitted.

It will also tell you that you’ll get a copy sent to your email.

I did in fact get the copy within just a couple minutes.

However, this is one of the things that the form has become a bit notorious about, that people don’t get the email or it comes only after a long delay.

Hopefully, it will continue to get better, and the emails will be near instantaneous from now on like it was for me in this case.

Screenshot of the confirmation page after completing the Colombia Check-Mig Form with a message saying it's complete and a box to click to download the register.

However, I would still strongly suggest , you click that yellow box that lets you download the pdf copy of your Check-Mig.

Seriously, download it, then email it to yourself, and save the pdf and take a screenshot of it on your phone!

You don’t want to get left behind for a flight for something you’ve actually done but the system is erroneously saying you haven’t to the airline!

Better safe than sorry is always my mantra.

Optional: Check Your Check-Mig

If you did not download it then and there, you should be able to double check everything is good with your Check-Mig form for Colombia.

If you go back to the main site linked above, you should see a third option where it says to Check and Download where you can click a box that says Review Checkmig.

If you click that, you’ll get a page, where you’ll need to enter the following:

  • Your Passport Information
  • Travel Date
  • Flight Number

After doing so, you’ll get a confirmation if a record of your Check-Mig exists and be able to enter in an email to send a copy of it.

Filling out the Check-Mig When Leaving Colombia

Yes, you also need to complete a Check-Mig form when departing Colombia.

The steps are the same as above, only you’ll select “I Travel from Colombia” in Step 2.

You’ll fill out your flight information and then your personal information just like before.

Then, you’ll jump to the terms and conditions as you won’t need to provide information on where you’ll be staying outside of Colombia.

FAQs and Further Check-Mig Colombia Help

Here are a handful more questions or issues I thought people may still have about the Colombian Check Mig form that could use clarification.

When does the Check-Mig form become available?

The Check-Mig form can be filled out 72 hours before your departure time .

When does the Check-Mig form close?

You must complete the form at least 1 hour before your departure time , or the application will no longer allow you do so.

Who is responsible for checking the form?

Most likely either the attendant at check-in and baggage drop or a gate agent will confirm that everyone has completed the Check-Mig form.

My experience is they usually do not ask to see it on your phone at immigration itself, but I also imagine they can see if you completed it on the computer. I’d still have it handy just in case though as they could ask for it.

What happens if I don’t complete the Check-Mig form for Colombia?

You may be denied boarding for your flight.

It’s not worth the airlines’ hassle being forced to take someone back if they are denied entry to the country. So, they will usually be fairly strict in ensuring you have the proper documentation, including the Check-Mig.

What should I do if I get an error filling out the Check-Mig?

If you get an error, try again.

If you still get an error, wait a couple hours and try yet again.

If you still get an error after that, keep trying every now and then up to a few hours before your flight.

If you’re still getting an error then, I’d take a screenshot to document it, and have some evidence to show you made every reasonable effort to complete the form. I have heard anecdotally that airlines have provided assistance to some people who had trouble completing it when checking in, but given the state of travel these days I also wouldn’t count on that.

What should I do if the system says I already have a record of a Check-Mig?

This is one of the things that came up sometimes before and hopefully has been worked out by the new system.

Occasionally, an error would occur while someone was filling out the form, then when they tried to redo it, the system would stop them from making another one. So they’d be left without the form complete and without being able to do it.

If you get an error in the middle of filling out the form, I’d suggest taking a screenshot.

Then, try again.

If it doesn’t let you complete it, try again later.

If you are still unable to complete it, at least you have some evidence you made a reasonable effort to do so.

Do I need to complete the Check-Mig for domestic flights inside Colombia?

No, the Check-Mig is only required for entry to or exit from Colombia internationally .

For domestic flights, you’ll just need to show your ID (generally your passport for foreign visitors) and your tickets.

Do I need to complete the Check-Mig if I have a visa or residency in Colombia?

All travelers , including citizens, permanent residents, and those on work and other types of visas must complete the Check-Mig form when entering and exiting the country.

Photo of the Colombian flag flying with the bay and buildings of Cartagena in the background.

Did you complete your Check-Mig form sucessfully?

Now you have a complete step by step guide to completing the Check-Mig form.

I hope that this was useful if you needed some help with the Colombia Check-Mig form. More importantly, I hope it kept you from paying for something that you didn’t need to!

Check-MIG Colombia

What is the Check-MIG and when do you need to present it to travel to Colombia?

Introduction to check-mig: definition and objectives.

Imagine a world where international travel is seamless, secure and free from tedious administrative hurdles. With this in mind, the Check-MIG has been introduced. But what does this initiative really mean and what are its primary objectives? Today, we take a look inside the world of Check-MIG to dispel preconceptions and understand its vital impact on international mobility.

Check-MIG is first and foremost an innovative system designed to simplify entry and exit procedures for international travellers. Its technical name may be off-putting, but its purpose is highly commendable: to optimise migration checks while guaranteeing a high level of security for the country using it. As a genuine bridge between national security and border crossing facilitation, Check-MIG provides a pragmatic response to today's immigration challenges.

Improving the experience of travellers is a leitmotiv. By providing information in advance of their journey, people can prepare themselves properly and avoid often stressful setbacks. What's more, by enabling better preparation on the part of the immigration services, the authorities can concentrate on their core business: protecting and welcoming people.

Ultimately, the deployment of Check-MIG reflects a desire to make international travel more accessible and safer for everyone. In this age of globalisation, where cross-border travel is commonplace, this system is an undeniable tool for governments wishing to offer an appropriate response to the challenges of migration while enhancing the experience of travellers.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Colombia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Colombian Embassy in the UK (in Spanish).

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Colombia.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Colombia, your passport must be valid on entry. However, Colombian immigration authorities recommend your passport has an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

If you’re a British-Colombian dual national, you must enter and leave Colombia using your Colombian passport and Colombian identification card (Cedula).

Visa requirements

You can visit Colombia for up to 90 days without a visa for business or tourism, at the discretion of the Colombian immigration officer on arrival.

You must be able to show an onward or return ticket valid within the 90-day period.

If you have a Colombian visa with more than 90 days of validity, you must register the visa at a Migración Colombia office (in Spanish) or register the visa online within 15 days of arrival in Colombia. If you do not register, you may get a fine. Check the latest entry requirements with the Colombian Consulate General in London before you travel.

You may be able to extend your stay once you are in Colombia by up to 120 days by applying at the immigration office Migración Colombia (in Spanish). As a visitor, you cannot remain in Colombia for more than 180 days in any 12-month period.

If you overstay your visa, you could be fined, or be deported at your own cost.

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

If you enter Colombia by land, sea or river, make sure the immigration authorities stamp your passport. If it is not stamped, you could get a fine when you leave. If the immigration office on the border is closed, go to the nearest office of Migración Colombia (in Spanish).

You must fill in the ‘Check-Mig’ form between 72 hours and one hour before you travel to Colombia. You will receive a confirmation email that you will need to show to immigration officials when you arrive.

Travelling through Colombia

You can travel through Colombia on your way to another country as long as you meet  Colombia’s entry requirements . You do not need to fill in the ‘Check-Mig’ form for internal flights in Colombia, including transit flights.

Travelling with children

Children aged 17 and under who have resident status in Colombia and who are travelling on a British passport need a notarised letter of permission from any non-accompanying parents or parent (in Spanish). How to fill out the Colombia Check-MIG Form: A step-by-step guide

Photo of Patricia Masias

Before you board a plane to or from Colombia, there’s a form you must complete—it's not a visa, but it's just as important .

The Colombia Check-MIG Form is an electronic form that helps to manage the immigration control process for everyone entering and leaving Colombia. All travelers—citizens, residents, and visitors alike, regardless of visa status—must fill it out when flying in or out of the country .

Fill me in

In the past, many have found the Check-MIG Form challenging to complete due to frequent system downtimes and unclear confirmation of whether it’s been successfully submitted. We're here to help simplify this process so you can focus on planning the rest of your trip. Let's get started.

Step-by-step guide to completing the Check-MIG Form

We provide a service that handles Colombia Check-MIG Form applications. You’ll get access to a simplified application form that’s easy to understand and fill out (it will take you less than 15 minutes!).

Once you're done, one of our visa experts will review your application to ensure it’s filled out correctly and error-free. This helps prevent issues such as being denied entry or delayed at departure. We recommend completing the Check-MIG Form at least 72 hours before you intend to travel .

Here are the steps to complete the form:

Step 1: Enter your personal and travel details on our website or via the iVisa app .

Step 2: Make sure that all your information is accurate. Choose your preferred processing time and pay the service fee with a credit or debit card, PayPal, or Venmo.

Step 3: Finish filling out the form, upload the required documents, and submit your application.

After completing these steps, you’ll receive a confirmation via email. Keep a digital or printed copy of this confirmation, as you’ll need to present it when you arrive in Colombia.

Tips for a smooth process when filling out the Check-MIG Form

Here’s a helpful video outlining the common mistakes made when filling out the form and how to avoid them.

How to Fill in Check Mig Colombia Form in 3 minutes like a Pro?

COLOMBIA CHECK MIG FORM- REQUIREMENTS, TIMELINE & MORE

By Deb Pati last updated on November 21, 2023

So you are all ready for the Colombian adventure, probably bought the tickets and go that travel insurance. You already know about the vaccination requirements and RT-PCR tests.

You check the Airline websites over and over. No one wants to be denied boarding, right?

That was what I and my Colombian wife were like when we planned to fly to Colombia a month ago. And barely 3 days before our travel, we came across something we had totally missed: Check Mig Colombia Form.

So you got your Colombia tourist visa, and you are planning your next trip to this beautiful country. Maybe you are planning to go and work in Colombia. It doesn’t matter.

And trust me when we say this, they actually chew out Colombians at immigration who forget to fill in the Check Mig Colombia. If you are a foreigner, you can be sure as hell that they will do much more than just chew you out.

Sample Check Mig Colombia Form to travel to Colombia

The purpose of this article is to make sure that anyone traveling to Colombia knows what the Colombia Check-MIG is all about and how to get it without spending a penny.

So now that we know your journey to Colombia comes with the Chek Mig, let’s see why in the world, would you need this.

colombian travel form

What Is Check Mig Colombia Exactly?

Since the Covid-19 outbreak, lots of countries have come up with ways to fasten immigration and make sure that international arrivals fulfill all the health requirements to enter the country.

For example, India has the Air Suvidha Form . Qatar has Ehteraz Pre Approval. We did both of them as well, in case you are interested to know.

Similarly, Colombia has Check Mig, which in Spanish is referred to as formulario check mig Colombia.

The Colombia Check-MIG form is nothing but a travel authorization document for international travelers.

Here is the Check Mig Colombia official website: https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf

It is a mandatory form that can be asked by the Airline before boarding and at immigration when entering the country. In our case, we were asked for it at both places.

Does Everyone Need to Fill in Check Mig Colombia?

Yes, everyone needs to do it.

It doesn’t matter whether you have the Covid-19 vaccine or RT-PCR test, whether you are a citizen or resident or whether you are a distant relative of Shakira. You have to complete the Colombia check Mig Form.

When to Apply Colombia CheckMig?

You need to fill out the Check Mig Colombia Form within 72 hours of boarding your flight. The latest you need the Check-MIG is 1 hour before your flight.

What are the Requirements for Colombia Check Mig?

The Check Mig Colombia Form requirements are pretty straightforward.

Unlike some other health declaration forms such as Air Suvidha for India or Ehteraz registration , you don’t need to upload any documents while filling in the Check Mig form.

You would need to have the following documents handy and submit the info from them.

  • A valid passport
  • Flight ticket
  • Accommodation details
  • A Colombia Visa if you have it
  • Passport details for minor children if they travel with you

Do you need to do Check-Mig to leave Colombia?

No, speaking from first-hand experience, there is no need to submit the Check Mig Form when leaving Colombia. You only need to do it in order to enter Colombia.

We know that the form has the option to fill it out when you leave Colombia, but in practice, it is not followed. However, it is probably not a bad idea to do it in case you got time and in case they ask for it.

How to Complete Check Mig Colombia Form in 5 Steps?

Hi Doug, You should be able to download the pre-registration report on https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf by providing your details. That is all you need. The email could work at airports but the PDF is foolproof.

December 23, 2022 at 8:02 pm

But it requires a flight number . I’m walking. Am I missing something.

December 25, 2022 at 10:12 pm

Ah, you could select Terrestre or Land. You can refer to the screenshot on step 1. Then you won’t need to provide flight info.

December 24, 2022 at 2:08 pm

Hi deb I’m not very computer experienced. When I open the link and tap on the orange icon , i am unable to complete the flight number space and unable to download. Is there any other way to get the PDF ? Thanks doug

December 25, 2022 at 10:19 pm

Hi Doug, Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any other way to download it. I believe the email that you have received will work out. You can take a print out of the same and explain them that you were not able to download it.

Hi Caroline, No, you don’t need to.

' src=

September 26, 2022 at 11:49 am

I notice it’s asks for your address in Colombia which clearly means hotel but it seems you can only input 1 option.

If i want to go to 3 different regions in 4 weeks which means at least 3 hotels, Do i just select the hotel i stay at longest? For instance if i use Bogota as a base point but i go to Nuqui for a week and Leticia for a few days. I can’t think of any logical other way to input this.

September 26, 2022 at 2:29 pm

Hi Therese, You need to put the address of the first hotel where you will be staying. So it will be Bogota.

Thank you so much for taking the time for this simple step by step explanation on filling out the Check-Mig form. We did choose to use English, and we got to the last step, and stalled because we could not locate the box with the “check”mark to submit. Our flight was within hours of departure and realizing this form was a non negotiable requirement, we even made copies of every page we filled out, drove 40 miles to the airport, and presented them to the airlines check-in clerk, who refused to accept them. Now, we were in a real panic. Back home 40 miles to the computer, with time running out, and after several calls, we FINALLY got some Customer Service help and together we discovered the “check” mark to submit was located all by itself on the very far left side of the page, and barely visible because of it’s tiny size, NOT below the Capcha box. With one click, we got our email confirmation and just made the flight. Hope this helps anyone who has had the same problem. Thanks again.

June 27, 2022 at 1:45 pm

Wow!! Glad to know everything worked out in the end John.

Hi thank you very much spending time to prepare this detailed instruction. I will make my international transfer in Bogota to Rio de Jenario. I will arrive on Delta and Fly out on Avianca 3 hours after arrival. 2 separate airlines tickets. My questions are:

1. What do I fill in for an address in Bogota since I only there for 3 hrs for my other international flight. 2. Since 2 separate airlines tickets; I need to process through passport control, customs and security upon my entry and exit of the country. What about if I am not able to make my transfer after I submitted my exit Check-MiG, will that create a problem when I exit the country again the next day? Do I need to submit a new form on my departure again?

My trip is coming up in a week and I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

September 25, 2022 at 1:14 pm

Hi Pat, I don’t think you need to do this since you are simply transiting and not entering Colombia. As long as you don’t pass through immigration, you would not need this even if you are flying with 2 different airlines. There is an area for transfer and you should be able to take your next flight without going through immigration. And 3 hours are probably not enough to do this anyways.

If you have any luggage to transfer from one airline to the other, see if you can do it without going through immigration. In most international airports, there is a way to do it.

In any case, to be on the safer side, you could fill out one form and have it with you. You don’t need it for departure.

All the best, Deb

I’m only transitting through Bogota Airport, Colombia, not actually staying there, I’m on my way to Lima in Peru. But I believe I still need a Check-Mig!? I’d be very grateful of your advice many thanks Julia.

September 30, 2022 at 7:34 am

Hi Julia, You should not need a Check-Mig if you are only transiting. Check-Mig is needed at the immigration, not before that. However, you could try and fill one in just in case, to be on the safer side.

I am an Indian Citizen and have Green Card. I hope I don’t need a visa to travel to Bogota Colombia. I’m only transiting through Bogota Airport, Colombia, for 3 days. In the visa section, I entered Green Card details and issue type USA not displaying in the drop-down box, so I updated not applicable. Is it right? Please let me know if I need any additional information to fill Check-Mig.

Appreciate all your help!

Thanks in advance. Rahul

Hi Rahul, Yes, you won’t need a visa. And yes, you can leave it as not applicable.

March 14, 2023 at 8:52 pm

So do we select yes or no for Visa? And trip reason should be Tourism..

If I select Yes for Visa, for Visa type option is ‘V’ and if I select no for Visa the Visa type is ‘PT’. Hence so confused what to select. Same thing Indian Citizen with green card.

March 15, 2023 at 10:45 am

You should select No for Visa as you will be entering with the Green Card.

I made a mistake in writing my name; putting my first name again in the second family name and submitted it already and got confirmation mail. How can I fix it out?

Hi Seolae, You could try to get a new one.

Hello Deb, our flight to Colombia is on 10/21/22 @ 5 :20pm. I have tried several times to complete the immigration form on line but system rejects it. As I understand that I can fill out within 72 hrs . No luck thus far. I will appreciate your suggestions. Thanks. David

October 20, 2022 at 6:43 am

Hi David, Yes, you can fill it out within 72 hours. Keep on trying with the Spanish version and with different browsers. Is it rejected because of some kind of error on the website?

I am a Junior and my passport says “SMITH JR” under surname, but I see no field to provide the suffix. Would I include it with my last name e.g. “Smith Jr” or just use Smith when completing the form?

October 22, 2022 at 8:05 am

Hey Jay. Yes, you can simply write your last name as Smith Jr. That should be fine.

' src=

October 22, 2022 at 2:26 pm

Am I okay to omit the Jr entirely and just use Smith?

October 23, 2022 at 5:51 am

Think it is better to use Smith Jr. In Colombia, a lot of people have 2 last names and 2 first names, and that is how they would do it.

Hi Deb, I filled up all the information in Spanish version but getting a message when I submit. “It is not possible to send the pre-Registration. You already have a record with the same travel data. Verify the information’

Please advise.

October 27, 2022 at 9:06 am

Hi Sameer, Have you filled it out already? That is the only possibility I can think of. If not, simply try with another browser or from another system. Please update how it works out. Will be useful for others.

November 2, 2022 at 12:18 pm

Greetings Deb Thanks for all the useful information. I have a question before I begin completing the form. On my passport, it shows my first and middle name in the ‘Given names’ section. When including my name on the form, do I enter my first and middle name, or just my first name? Thanks in advance.

November 2, 2022 at 2:43 pm

Hi Faye, You can provide your first name and middle name in the name field for the form.

Cheers, Deb

November 3, 2022 at 11:41 am

Thank you Deb!!! Unfortunately, I just realized that i’ve made a mistake on my form. What action of correction would you recommend? Thanks in advance

November 3, 2022 at 2:28 pm

Hey Faye, Have you tried resubmitting it? The problem is that if you have already submitted it, it would not allow you I believe. If it doesn’t work, then simply carry it with you and explain to them if they ask you about the mistake. In my experience, they can cut you some slack depending on the day.

November 3, 2022 at 3:06 pm

Thanks for responding Deb. No, I haven’t tried resubmitting. I figured that it wouldn’t let me since the passport number is already tied to the first application. I’ve already received the confirmation. Do you recommend that I try to submit a second time with the corrected information. Thanks in advance

November 4, 2022 at 10:02 am

Don’t think resubmitting will work Faye. You can try in any case. If it doesn’t work, you can go with the Checkmig that you have.

Thank you! The date trip is when I start the last leg of my trip enroute to Colombia? For instance if I am scheduled to arrive in Colombia the next morning at 2am, from a flight the evening before, what would be the date of travel? When I depart or when I am set to arrive?

November 18, 2022 at 9:07 am

Hi Daniel, It would be when you depart, ideally.

Did your Colombian wife fill out the form with her US or Colombian passport info. I know I have to have my Colombian passport to enter the country but I also have to buy my plane ticket with my name in the US because I need the US passport to leave the country. I had issues last year because I had a different name on my plane ticket and it was not matching the Colombian passport info when I filled out the form. I can’t remember now what I’m supposed to fill that out with 😞

November 28, 2022 at 5:52 am

My wife only has a Colombian passport. 🙂 In any case, I believe you have to enter with a Colombian passport if you have one. So your name should be the same in both places.

hi! why do i have to pay 89 canadian dollars to fill check mig colombia, I went in april to colombia and i didnt pay , I forgot to do it and i did it at the airport and got charged.

November 30, 2022 at 5:52 am

Hi Clara, How long did you stay in Colombia? Was it more than 3 months? Then that probably was the exit fee. Check Mig is free.

December 2, 2022 at 6:38 am

Hello, when I try to fill out the form it will not let select the date of when I enter. Do I need to wait exactly 72 hours? The furthest out it lets me choose is the 4 but my flight is the 9th

December 4, 2022 at 11:06 am

Hey MD, No, you can not fill it out if you are flying 3 days after the time when you are filling out the form. For example, if you are flying on the 9th, you can try to fill it put on the 6th.

December 12, 2022 at 3:42 pm

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to post this very helpful information, I sure could have used this a couple of years ago when I missed my flight because the attendant told that I have to have this form done 2 hours before my flight and I ended up having to take another flight and fight with the airline and Expidia to try to get my money back- I ended up having my credit card assist with this, otherwise I would have been out 4K because ia was traveling with my son. May question today is about a fee the I was charged when doing the Check-mig for my mother a month ago, at some point in the application I asked to pay $90 US to process the application, there were other people at the airport who had the same experience- is this legit? I did receive a confirmation which I then showed the attendant and my mother got on the plane, but a fee for this process? US in Canada?

December 16, 2022 at 3:54 pm

Hi Pilar, Sorry to hear about your experience. Sometimes the Airline staff can be too difficult. Did you have to pay the fees when doing the Check Mig? Do you by any chance have a receipt or screenshot of the payment that you can email to [email protected] ?

This is totally free, so I find it strange. A screenshot would help a lot.

Question: if a cruise passenger (US citizen) goes to Colombia by cruise ship can he get the necessary entry stamp upon arrival in Cartagena or other Colombian port so that he can stay up to the three month limit and/or renew his visa for another three months before return to the US or another country?

The cruise agencies are vague; some say you can disembark; others say not. Some say you must buy the nonrefundable ticket before they can answer the question. This is a visit to a Colombian friend that is not just for pleasure and fun but important, humanitarian-wise. Flying is out of the question, at least upon arriving there.

A return ticket, Chekc Mig Colombia and US passport would all be in his possession. Why is it so hard to get an answer to this question from travel agencies and US and Colombian embassies? Thank you for your help and knowledge if available. (Would it be better to get a tourist visa to Colombia before leaving the US?)

December 16, 2022 at 7:31 pm

Hi Dale, The first thing that you need to confirm is whether the cruise has a stop in Cartagena or any other port in Colombia or not. Then the next thing you have to confirm with them is whether he will be allowed to end his journey there and leave the cruise permanently. Some of them would not agree with that. Finally, the process of visa stamping. Whether there is an immigration post that can stamp his passport when he embarks? The cruise company can answer this as well. This is the most important part.

A non-refundable ticket is not needed. He can rent one as well : https://thevisaproject.com/blog/tips/10-ways-for-onward-travel-proof/

As a US citizen, he does not need a visa for tourism. So applying for that is out of question.

Please update us on how it goes. Would help everyone else.

Hi. I’m leaving for Colombia in less than two days but got stuck on Check-mig. Under “department”, for the address I’ll be staying at, I chose “Bolívar. The next field is required, for “city”, but none are in the menu. It only says “select”, and I can’t click “next”. What to do?

December 16, 2022 at 7:49 pm

Hi, In that case, simply choose the department of the airport where you will land, and then put the whole address in the body.

Thank you! I’m so thankful I found your article. I tried numerous times, and kept getting “It is not possible to send the Pre-Registration, you already have a record with the same travel data, verify the information”. I just thought it was weird because the form never went through. Plus, I never got an email confirmation. I was frustrated, stressed and getting nervous because I leave within 24 hours. Then, I found your article, and just like you advised, I used the Spanish form. The questions were different from the ones you have in Step 3: Provide Details of Health Issues, though. But since I did the English form so many times, I already knew them by heart! The Spanish form had only one little glitch, but after it was fixed, it just breezed through. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Again, thank you for this very helpful article.

hi there, im confused about the time line. some places i see i can fill check mig out 72 hours before my departure and other places say no more than 24 hours before my arrival or no more than 24 hours before my departure. this doesn’t make sense to me if it can take up to 72 hours to process and i have to have my proof of conformation before i get on the plane??

January 4, 2023 at 9:28 am

Hi Gerald, Yes, it is 72 hours before departure. The form itself would not allow you to do it before that. And when you provide your details you can see the date range which allows you to fill in before you do the final submission.

January 7, 2023 at 3:37 pm

hi Deb, thanks for the reply, last night i tried to fill the form out and the site kept freezing and my session kept timing out(page not responding in time), then after 2 or 3 tries of getting half way through i finally got to the end and submitted it. unfortunately it’s saying i’ve already got one submitted with that flight information. my failed attempt must on the system i guess. any ideas here?

January 9, 2023 at 10:50 am

Hi Gerald, Yes. That is my guess. Can you try and see if you can fetch the pre-registration PDF on https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf by providing your details?

What do they mean by country of origin? origin of what? My Country of residence?

January 16, 2023 at 7:42 pm

Yes, the country whose passport you hold.

' src=

January 17, 2023 at 1:55 pm

Doesn’t make sense as the origin question is in first section re travel plans. Having looked on live most people take this to mean where did your journey begin. Personal details section asks for Nationality and residency which follows?

January 17, 2023 at 9:40 am

Great site! Two questions Where do l enter my middle name as it’s in passport Country of origin question- seems to relate to where your journey started as opposed to your birth country ?

January 17, 2023 at 9:23 pm

Hi Atlan, You can add the middle name to the segundo nombre or second name field.

The country of origin is your birth country.

January 19, 2023 at 10:35 pm

Hi Thanks for replying. It probably doesn’t matter but l called the authorities in Columbia. The Mig in part two asks for your nationality and place of birth The origin question in part 1 relates to your journey. So if you flew from panama to Colombia via Germany then the origin is Germany. It’s a means of identifying where you have traveled from. Where your journey began.

January 19, 2023 at 10:41 pm

Sorry should have said from Germany to Colombia via Panama

' src=

March 25, 2023 at 5:07 pm

Hi Deb, Thanks for the info. I live in Bulgaria and I have a family vacation coming up in Colombia. Unfortunately, it is not possible to open a check mig from Bulgaria. So a friend who lives in Germany will fill it in for me. My question is, if I don’t get a confirmation email, will she be able to download the pdf file and send it to me?

January 26, 2023 at 9:23 pm

Hi Polina, Yes, you will be able to download it from https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/consultarpreregistro.jsf

All the best.

One more question – since my husband and I have been on boosters since January last year and the children are 11 and 14 years old, should we do a psr test

January 26, 2023 at 9:34 pm

PCR test is not required for entering Colombia but please confirm with the Airline. It’s always the Airlines that seem to be the bad guys, probably a lot more than the immigration officers.

' src=

January 26, 2023 at 7:34 pm

Hey there I’m flying from Atlanta to Bogota to Medellín. My friends think immigration checkpoint is Medellín, I think it’s Bogota — what do you say?

If it is Bogota and I can’t convince them what will happen?

March 22, 2023 at 11:40 am

How long is your layover? It could be Medellin I believe, and you could put that in the form. In case they ask, you can reason. They will understand.

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 2:06 pm

My layover is 1hr and 45 min. I filled out a form & put Bogota, do I need to redo it and put Medellín? What happens if I get it wrong?

March 24, 2023 at 9:39 am

Well, from the stories that I have heard, you should be just fine I believe. Since you have already done it, let it be that way. They might ask a few questions and you could always reason that since your flight would land in Bogota first, that is your port of entry.

' src=

April 5, 2023 at 10:49 pm

My flight is this sat April 8th. However, the month , day and year have a drop down for the flight date but it only has days 5, 6, 7.. Should I wait and try tomorrow or Friday? do the days change? My forst time travelling to Colombia and I am already super stressed about this. I would appreciate your advise.

If landing in Bogoto and then changing to another plane to go to Bucaramanga what is my point of entry into Colombia where the Emigration check point will be?

April 6, 2023 at 8:29 pm

Hi John, It should be Bucaramanga in that case since that’s where you would be passing through the immigration I believe. If you do the immigration thing in Bogota, then it would be Bogota.

' src=

April 20, 2023 at 7:25 am

Hey there – thanks for the post! Very helpful.

I will like to visit Colombia for tourism purposes and needed some clarification. I hold an Indian passport. I have visited Colombia few times in the past and showed United States H1B visa stamp during entry at the Medellin airport’s immigration check and entry was smooth. My H1B visa stamp is now expired, as I am in the final stages of my US green card process. US Immigration services has provided me a green card based Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and Advance Parole (AP) card that is a valid temporary residence permit and allows me to freely exit and enter the US i.e. the green card based EAD+AP card is a valid card for 180+ days beyond my intended travel to Colombia, and I have used it to travel to India and reenter US .

In this document, I see that the requirement for Indian passport holder is to have a “US residence permit” OR a visa. https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/sites/default/files/FOTOS2020/5488%20del%2022%20de%20julio%20de%202022_0.pdf#page=5 It doesn’t say a US Permanent Residence permit. So, I am assuming that the EAD/AP combo card should be a valid temporary residence permit as that’s how USCIS treats it

My question: Can I travel to Colombia and show my green card application based EAD + AP card as the valid residence permit and be allowed to enter Colombia for tourism purposes? And hence not apply for Colombia visa. I am planning to travel in the next 4-5 days, and hence don’t have the needed time to apply for a consulate at the visa.

April 23, 2023 at 12:40 pm

Hi, Yes, you should be able to travel with the EAD/AP combo card, just like you would with a valid US visa.

Deb: Confused on the timing of the completion of the MIG. While I’m leaving on a Thursday night from the U.S. and will be visiting Colombia, I’m going to be disembarking in Panama City for 3 days before continuing on to Medellin Colombia on Monday. Therefore, it appears Thursday would be too soon to complete my MIG. Do I need to wait until I’m in Panama to complete the MIG given Thursday is outside of the 72 period?

We depart from Denver, and fly to Panama City, (arriving the next morning) and have a 2 hour layover, and then our second flight to Bogota that morning – with a different flight number. (All on Copa airlines) Do I provide the flight number/date of the Denver flight to Panama City, or the Panama City flight to Bogota? We have US passports.

April 6, 2024 at 4:34 pm

Hi Nancy, You need to provide the flight number for the flight from Panama city to Bogota.

Happy travels, Deb

Colombia Check-MIG Form: Everything You Need To Know

Screenshot of Columbia check-MIG website

Last Updated on August 26, 2023 by PAVSAdmin

What Is The Columbia Check-MIG Form?

The Colombia check MIG form is a required travel document that must be completed in order to enter or depart from Colombia. This form was designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce in-person interactions between immigration officials and passengers entering and exiting the country.

Anyone traveling to or from Columbia must complete this online application, otherwise you risk being denied entry to the country if you don’t have the form.

This single entry form is only valid upon either entry or exit of the country. For that reason, you will need to complete a new form every time you enter or leave Colombia.

When To Apply For The Check-MIG Form

All travelers must apply for the mandatory document within 1-24 hours of arrival to or departure from Colombia.

iVisa.com offers a queue service where you can apply any time before your trip. They’ll place you in a queue where your document will be processed as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that this form is mandatory for all foreign visitors and Columbian citizens. You may be refused entry if you don’t complete this travel authorization prior to your flight.

iVisa can help you complete your check MIG form quickly if you are on a deadline. An expert will also review your application to avoid any problems.

How to get your travel visa expedited

What Do I Need To Apply For The Check-MIG Form Online?

To complete your online Colombia Check Mig, you will need to have the following necessary documents and information:

  • Passport – A valid passport is required for foreign travelers, or a national ID card number for Columbian citizens.
  • Email address – A working email address is needed in order for you to receive confirmation of the completed MIG check form.
  • Flight Itinerary – This includes flight dates, airline information and flight numbers. This information is required in order to complete the Colombia Check MIG form, so you must purchase your flight tickets first.
  • Health Status – Information about your current state of health, Covid-19 vaccinations, and other personal information.
  • Payment Method – A credit card or debit card is required for payment. After gathering the required documentation and submitting the application, you will receive your Check MIG Colombia confirmation via email in as little as 30 minutes.

How To Get The Colombia Check-MIG Form

Before you travel, you can apply online from your home country by completing the Check MIG online application form. Simply submit the necessary information and complete the easy-to-follow steps below:

  • First, fill out the check MIG online application form with your personal details and travel information. You will need to answer few questions about your current state of health.
  • Next, choose a processing time that’s best for you, attach all necessary documents, and then confirm your payment.
  • Finally, just click the submit button and relax while you wait for your Check MIG form confirmation email.

It’s important to note that if you make a mistake in your application, you won’t be able to submit a new application while the current one is being processed. In order to fill out a new application, you will first need to wait for the previous form to be accepted or rejected.

It’s also a good idea to keep your email confirmation on your smartphone after you have received it. This way you’ll be able to show it when checking in for your flight, or in the event you’re asked for it by immigration officials or border control authorities.

Who Is Required To Have A Colombia Check-Mig?

Visitors from all countries wishing to enter Colombia are required to complete the Check-MIG form within 24 hours of arriving in or departing from Colombia. This also applies to Colombian citizens and residents as well.

Additionally, the check MIG form is also one of the COVID-19 entry requirements for entering Columbia.

For international travelers to enter Colombia, they must have a valid passport. To enter Colombia, you will need a visa. If you need a visa in order to enter the country, it’s important that you check this prior to leaving and make sure you get the right one for your nationality.

You can verify this information before you travel and get the right one for you. These requirements can be checked using iVisa’s Visa Tracker . A visa is only required upon arrival in a number of countries, so it’s possible that this Health Declaration will be the only thing you need prior to your trip.

Is The Colombia Check-MIG Form Required For Children?

An application must be submitted for all children, but if the child is traveling with an adult, their details can be added to the check MIG form of the parent or guardian.

Is A Visa Required to Travel to Colombia?

Colombia offers an arrival visa to many nationalities, allowing them to stay for up 90 days without a standard travel visa. Upon arrival to Colombia, your visa will be stamped in your passport.

You can apply for permission to stay for another 90 days if you’re from one of the eligible countries. For this reason, you can potentially stay in Colombia for up to 180 days without needing a visa. However, a second extension cannot be requested.

iVisa’s Visa Checker tool can help you determine if you are eligible. The FAQ section contains a complete list of countries that are eligible to travel to Colombia with a visa upon arrival.

Keep in mind, however, that the Colombia Check MIG form is not a substitute for a visa.

Do I have to pay for the Colombia Check-MIG Form?

The check MIG form can be obtained for free via the government portal. But, many travelers will vouch for the unpredictability of the platform. This can lead to undue stress when you must submit your application within 24 hours of arriving in Colombia.

Using a service like iVisa , however, will ensure that your application is handled quickly, and a team of experts will review your details to make certain you don’t make mistakes. You can also complete the form in any language you prefer using this service.

No matter if you apply through the government website or use a service, you will still be required to present the completed travel document to enter or leave Columbia.

Are There Any Colombia COVID-19 Travel Restrictions?

Visitors to Columbia do not need to present proof that they have received full vaccination in order to enter the country. COVID testing is not required for visitors who have been fully vaccinated, however.

Only WHO-approved vaccines are accepted. All doses of the vaccine for SARS-Cov-2 must be administered to travelers at least two weeks prior to their arrival for them to be considered fully vaccinated.

The following is a list of the current WHO-approved vaccines:

  • AztraZeneca/Oxford
  • Johnson and Johnson
  • Pfizer/BioTech

It’s recommend that you keep updated on the latest Colombian travel information or contact your local embassy as this information can change rapidly.

Visitors who do not have full COVID-19 vaccination must take a COVID-19 test before arriving in Colombia. Prior to arrival, applicants must complete Covid-19 PCR testing within 72 hours and or antigen testing within 48 hours.

This includes those who are 18 and over who have not received a complete round of vaccinations, or who are not able to provide proof of vaccination at least two weeks prior to travel. In the event that you test positive for COVID-19, you may have to stay put until you can show a negative PCR result.

  • Bring enough cash for daily activities, especially in remote areas.
  • Learn basic Spanish to navigate the country and communicate effectively.

Visiting Colombia for the first time can be exciting, but just like any destination worldwide, there are some tips one needs to know before visiting. Language, weather, money, and transportation can be quite confusing, especially in Colombia. Still, with these tips, one will be able to avoid a lot of difficult situations in the country. It doesn't matter if you're here for ten days or three; Colombia is a gorgeous country with endless things to experience. Whether it's someone's first time or they need a refresher, you can't go wrong with following these essential tips for traveling to beautiful Colombia!

UPDATE: 2023/11/25 16:36 EST BY NOAH STAATS

There Are More Things To Know When Visiting Colombia

This article has been refreshed with new information regarding a trip to beautiful Colombia, as well as expanded talking points for previous suggestions. Remember to stay out of bad neighborhoods at night, bring enough cash for day trips, learn some Spanish, and have plenty of fun!

Eat At The Hotel If You're Worried About Cleanliness

For those coming to Colombia and nervous about food and water cleanliness, it's always a safe bet to eat with your hotel or resort and get water via gift shops inside them. Although most places in bigger Colombian cities are clean and safe, some smaller villages do not abide by strict health and sanitation regulations when preparing or serving food and drinks. To steer clear of food-borne illness, make sure and book restaurants with good reviews and clean kitchens/dining rooms.

  • It's generally better to eat at the hotel if you're staying somewhere off the beaten path.

Tayrona National Park is a fun day trip idea for visitors to Colombia.

Make Sure And Keep Some Cash Ready

One thing many visitors to Colombia forget is to bring enough cash for daily activities. Because debit and credit cards are often not accepted or take a large conversion fee, getting cash from the bank or at your hotel may be the better option. Of course, in bigger cities, there will be more accessibility and availability to ATMs and stores taking credit cards, but in remote towns and villages: bring cash.

That said, keep all cash somewhere safe and hard to get to. Pickpocketing is prevalent here, as well as violent assault in poorer areas.

  • Because of steep ATM and credit card fees, it's best to bring enough money for everyday food, attractions, and transportation when visiting Colombia.

Learn Some Spanish Words

Colombia is a place where the majority of the population speaks only Spanish. In a place like Bogotá - the capital city , most people only speak Spanish, which means it can be difficult to get around if one only knows English. While one does not necessarily need to know how to speak the language, some basic words will go a long way and help one better get around the country.

  • Learning basic Spanish will go a long way when coming to Colombia.

Taxis Are Cheap, But Buses Are Cheaper And Safer

Buses are Colombia's main means of transportation, and they are incredibly cheap and safe. Taxis, on the other hand, are also cheap, but a few inconveniences come with them. First, they can be unsafe, as fake taxi drivers can rob passengers. Apps such as Uber and Easy Taxi are illegal in the country, but they are still in operation and are the safest ways to get taxis.

  • Taking the bus is often cheaper and safer than taxis while in Colombia.

Avoid Lonely Areas, Especially At Night

Just like many other amazing destinations worldwide, Colombia experiences increased crime, which is why one must exercise extreme caution when visiting. A good rule is avoiding lonely areas, especially at night. For the first trip, travelers can stick to the popular tourist destinations around the country, which are usually more crowded, to avoid being an easy target.

  • Tourists to Colombia are not recommended to venture out into lonely/quiet areas at night.

Avoid Unnecessary Display Of Wealth

Showing unnecessary displays of wealth, especially in a country like Colombia, may be dangerous. The country's economy is bad, which has made many people living there desperate. It is advisable to avoid putting on too many accessories or carrying large amounts of money around to avoid drawing too much attention to oneself.

  • Wearing fancy clothes, jewelry, or other accessories in Colombia can get you into trouble at night or in certain areas.

Prepare An Itinerary To Follow Before Visiting

Colombia is very big and endowed with plenty of natural and man-made attractions, which means there are plenty of things to see and do here. Without a proper itinerary of what to do in the country, one can find it difficult to get the most out of their visit. During the planning process, make a list of things to do in the country and follow that itinerary when in the country. There will be more to do, but it is better to have a plan rather than randomly deciding what to do.

  • Planning before you come here can help ease frustration due to Colombia's vast offerings.

The Weather Can Be Unpredictable, So Come Prepared

Colombia experiences two major seasons, which are rainy and dry. But the weather is not usually not dependent on the time of the year but on elevation. The weather can easily change from sunny to rainy in some parts of the country with higher elevations, like Bogotá. The temperature is also known to sometimes rise from as low as 4 degrees Celsius to 19 degrees Celsius on some days. Some parts of the country, such as Cartagena and Santa Marta, experience lots of sunshine all year round. This means at any time of the year; one can experience all four seasons in Colombia. With such diverse and unpredictable weather, one has to come prepared to face any type of weather in this country.

  • The weather is unpredictable in Colombia, with wild changes in temperature being common.

Never Talk About Drugs, Especially Cocaine

One important thing to always avoid doing in Colombia is talking about drugs. Drug production and trafficking continue to increase in this country, and drug is always accompanied by crime. This makes it not just a national issue but a global issue for which Colombia plays a major role as it is one of the major producers of cocaine in the world. In 2021, the production of coca leaves which is the main ingredient for cocaine, increased drastically. To avoid getting into a difficult situation, pretend not to know anything about drugs in Colombia and instead focus on enjoying the amazing things the country has to offer.

  • Joking or discussing cocaine can and will get you in trouble with law enforcement in Colombia.

Haggle Before Buying Something

The asking price of a product in Colombia may not always be the actual price but just the seller trying to get more profit from tourists who may not know the price. To avoid getting ripped by sellers (who always know a gringo when they see one), employ the skill of bargaining when purchasing something. Buying something $5 less than the initial asking price is not uncommon.

  • It's worth it to try and bargain with vendors while shopping in Colombia.

Altitude Sickness Is Real In Colombia

In Colombia, like many parts of South America, high altitude is something that one often has to worry about as the country is filled with many mountains. Bogota, the country’s capital, rises to an elevation of 8,660 feet , making it one of the highest cities in the world. One important tip to help deal with altitude sickness in Colombia is to always stay hydrated when heading to places with high altitudes. Adventurers seeking to go rock climbing or visit higher places can also include other substances like vitamins and minerals to cushion the effects of the high altitudes. Alcohol, caffeine, and other dehydrating substances should also be avoided when heading to higher elevations.

  • Because of the possible 8,660 feet of elevation in Colombia, it's not uncommon for altitude sickness to ravage through groups vacationing to the country.

It’s Not Mandatory To Tip

In hotels, bars, restaurants, and other service centers around Colombia, tipping is not usually mandatory or expected, unlike in other countries. Nicer restaurants usually include a 10% service charge automatically on the bill. Of course, if the service was exceptional, it does not hurt to give the service person some extra change. Tipping taxi drivers is also not a thing as passengers are only required to pay the amount on the meter; still, the extra tip is always appreciated. In most cases, tips cost between 2,000 and 5,000 Columbian Pesos, equivalent to a dollar. That's like nothing to most tourists, but the locals in Colombia appreciate it so much.

  • Adding a tip (although appreciated) is not required in Colombia.

Be Careful On The Roads

The traffic in Colombia can be chaotic. Drivers here are usually impatient and aggressive and won’t stop for anybody. To avoid getting into a dangerous situation on the road, it is important to be careful on the roads. With dangerous roads and long traffic jams, it will be better to avoid driving in Colombia and just stick to using taxis and buses.

  • Driving can be difficult here, especially regarding other impatient and volatile drivers.

Hurricane Beryl Tracker

By William B. Davis, Madison Dong, Judson Jones, John Keefe, and Bea Malsky

Beryl was a Category 4 hurricane in the Caribbean Sea early Wednesday Eastern time, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory .

The hurricane had sustained wind speeds of 145 miles per hour. Follow our coverage here .

Beryl is the second named storm to form in the Atlantic in 2024.

In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that there would be 17 to 25 named storms this year, an above-normal amount.

What does the storm look like from above?

Satellite imagery can help determine the strength, size and cohesion of a storm. The stronger a storm becomes, the more likely an eye will form in the center. When the eye looks symmetrical, that often means the storm is not encountering anything to weaken it.

This season follows an overly active year, with 20 named storms — including an early storm later given the official name of “Unnamed.” It was the eighth year in a row to surpass the average of 14 named storms. Only one hurricane, Idalia, made landfall in the United States.

Typically, the El Niño pattern that was in force last season would have suppressed hurricanes and reduced the number of storms in a season. But in 2023, the warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic blunted El Niño’s usual effect of thwarting storms.

The warm ocean temperatures that fueled last year’s season returned even warmer at the start of this season, raising forecasters’ confidence that there would be more storms this year. The heightened sea surface temperatures could also strengthen storms more rapidly than usual.

To make matters worse, the El Niño pattern present last year is also diminishing, most likely creating a more suitable atmosphere for storms to form and intensify.

Hurricanes need a calm environment to form, and, in the Atlantic, a strong El Niño increases the amount of wind shear — a change in wind speed and/or direction with height — which disrupts a storm's ability to coalesce. Without El Niño this year, clouds are more likely to tower to the tall heights needed to sustain a powerful cyclone.

Tracking map Source: National Hurricane Center | Notes: The map shows probabilities of at least 5 percent. The forecast is for up to five days, with that time span starting up to three hours before the reported time that the storm reaches its latest location. Wind speed probability data is not available north of 60.25 degrees north latitude.

Wind arrivals table Sources: New York Times analysis of National Hurricane Center data (arrival times); U.S. Census Bureau and Natural Earth (geographic locations); Google (time zones) | Notes: The table shows predicted arrival times of sustained, damaging winds of 58 m.p.h. or more for select cities with a chance of such winds reaching them. If damaging winds reach a location, there is no more than a 10 percent chance that they will arrive before the “earliest reasonable” time and a 50 percent chance they will arrive before the “most likely” time.
