Arrive New Delhi

Arrive in Delhi and transfer to the Andaz Delhi Hotel . The day is yours to explore this vibrant cultural melting pot. Delhi consists of two starkly different worlds: upscale New Delhi was built as the seat of government for the British Raj; Old Delhi served as the capital of the Mughal Empire. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing at the hotel. Overnight at the Andaz Delhi Hotel .

New Delhi / Bhopal / Satpura National Park

Depart Delhi early on a flight to Bhopal, the capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. From there, a picturesque drive will take you to the sandstone peaks and narrow ravines of Satpura National Park. Satpura, covering roughly 200 square miles, is part of an ambitious government initiative that seeks to preserve and reclaim dwindling forests and repopulate the area with endangered wildlife. Dinner and overnight at the small Reni Pani Jungle Lodge  at the edge of the Satpura Tiger Reserve.

Satpura National Park

Early this morning, cross the Denwa River in a 4×4 to watch the Satpura Reserve come alive. Satpura is located in a transition zone between the forests of eastern India and Western India—the careful observer will notice stands of both Teak and Sal—and this affords the privilege of being at the exact place where several habitats overlap. The area is home to Gaur, a bison-like animal that is the largest of all the world’s bovids; the world’s only four-horned antelope, the Chousingha; and the Rhesus Macaque. The impressive Malabar Giant Squirrel, an unusual species for Central India, has also been spotted here. But of all the park’s denizens, it is the Sloth Bear for which Satpura is most famous, for nowhere else on Earth are these typically elusive and reclusive creatures more conspicuous. Explore the reserve on foot or take another 4×4 safari to its outer reaches, constantly alert for any sign of the presence of this spectacular animal.  Overnight Reni Pani Jungle Lodge .

Satpura / Pench National Park

Leave Satpura this morning for a scenic day’s drive past picture-perfect teak forests and jungle streams and arrive this afternoon in Pench National Park and Tiger Reserve. Immortalized by Rudyard Kipling in “ The Jungle Book ,” Pench’s terrain is characterized by both dry, deciduous forest and undulating grasslands, making it choice habitat for a staggering diversity of wildlife, including one of the highest densities of herbivores of any Indian park. Dinner and overnight at Jamtara Wilderness Lodge, in the heart of rural Pench outside the park .

Pench National Park

This India wildlife park gets its name from the Pench River, which winds through it like a python, adding a number of aquatic species to an already long list of wildlife. Renowned as an ever-more-reliable location for India’s apex predator, the iconic Bengal Tiger, Pench is also home to the elusive Asiatic Leopard and the handsome Dhole, or Asiatic Wild Dog. It’s also a bird-watcher’s dream, with over 250 recorded species, including the impressive Malabar Pied Hornbill, Crested Serpent-Eagle and Madhya Pradesh’s State Bird, the Yellow-footed Green Pigeon. Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and guided walks, watching herds of elegant Chital, or Spotted Deer, often accompanied by foraging troops of elegant, long-tailed Hanuman Langurs. Dinners and overnights at Jamtara Wilderness Lodge .

Pench / Kanha National Park

After breakfast, travel past rich farmland and colorful villages to Kanha National Park. This 366-square-mile preserve was established to save the endangered Barasingha, or Swamp Deer, before being declared part of the Project Tiger network. Take an afternoon wildlife safari, before returning for dinner and overnight at Kanha Jungle Lodge , at the edge of the park.

Kanha National Park

Kanha’s magnificent Sal forests are home to prolific wildlife, notably India’s largest population of tigers, and your time in this wildlife Mecca will focus on experiencing firsthand this most regal of big cats. Beginning every day before dawn, enter the park with morning mists still hanging over dew-drenched meadows. At sunrise, the forests resound with bird song, from the quiet purring of Jungle Owlets and rich melodies of Orange-headed Thrushes to the raucous crowing of Red Junglefowl. Be especially alert to the warning barks of Sambar, Chital or Barking Deer that may lead to a a majestic Bengal Tiger padding through the forest. While seeing tigers will undoubtedly be foremost in your mind, you may also cross paths with Golden Jackal, Ruddy Mongoose, Wild Boar, or the impressive Gaur.

Ascend the plateau of Bamni Dadar for panoramic views over the park far below. Flamboyant Asian Fairy Bluebirds, Red-whiskered Bulbuls and flocks of Scarlet Minivets enliven the treetops, and in the arid scrub of the plateau you may be lucky enough to glimpse the elusive Chousingha. This remote part of Madhya Pradesh still preserves its rural tradition, and between excursions into the park you’ll visit a nearby school for a taste of local village life. The lodge is also renowned for its fine Indian cuisine and you may choose to partake in a cooking demonstration.

Kanha / Raipur / Kolkata

After a last morning wildlife safari drive in Kanha, head east through rural villages to Raipur, in the state of Chhattisgarh. Transfer to the airport and fly to Kolkata, where you have time for dinner before the overnight at Taj City Centre New Town .

Kolkata / Guwahati / Kaziranga

Rise early this morning for a flight east to India’s principal tea-growing region, Assam, on the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra River. Land in Guwahati and continue by road to Kaziranga National Park, global stronghold of the prehistoric-looking Greater One-horned Rhinoceros. Once hunted to near-extinction, this rhino’s numbers have now rebounded to more than 1,600, two-thirds of which are found within this park. Kaziranga is also home to the highest density of tigers, although the density of the Elephant Grass makes seeing this elusive cat unlikely. Dinner and overnight at Diphlu River Lodge , in traditional stilt cottages set amongst lush bamboo groves.

Kaziranga National Park

Bordering the sacred Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage site and one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas of eastern India. Morning and afternoon game drives will reveal the park’s 160 square miles of Elephant Grass, marshland and dense, tropical, moist broadleaf forests. Aside from Greater One-horned Rhinoceros and the elusive tigers, the park is home to Asian Elephants, one of only two populations of wild Water Buffalo in existence, Barasingha, Hog Deer, and Indian Rock Python. It has also been deemed by Birdlife International an Important Bird Area, due to its population of both Lesser and Greater Adjutant Storks and the scarce and endangered Bengal Florican, as well as the abundant herons, migrant waterfowl and shorebirds that often throng its oxbow lakes, or jheels . Gather at our lodge on the final night for a festive farewell dinner. Overnights at Diphlu River Lodge .

Kaziranga / Guwahati / New Delhi

Drive back to Guwahati for an afternoon flight to Delhi. Transfer to the Andaz Delhi Hotel , near the airport, for dinner. Rooms are booked for the night, although many flights depart late this evening, or early the following morning.

Depart New Delhi

Transfer very early this morning to the airport for your international flights home.

Encounters with the King of the Jungle

You’ll be able to feel the atmosphere of the jungle change when a tiger is close. The air fills with the sound of animal warnings and you can feel the tension as a tiger enters their territory. On your tiger-watching safari, your first glimpse might just be the white flecks of hair on the tiger’s ears as he stalks through long grassland, occasionally catching a flash of bright orange or black.

We track down forest pathways that are the favourite haunts of our feline friends. Using local guides with intimate knowledge of the tiger’s natural habitats, we maximise your chances of watching one of these remarkable endangered big cats in their natural habitat.

Where do Tigers Live?

Bengal Tiger: Home to 80% of the world’s tiger population and over 50 designation Tiger Reserves, India is the best place to see tigers with around 3,000 tigers.

Siberian Tiger: Found only in the mountain forests of eastern Russia, the Siberian tiger has adapted to the harsh climate, long winters and high latitude.

When is the Best Time to see Bengal Tigers in India?

The ideal months for observing tigers in India are February, March, and April, as temperatures start to rise. As the temperature climbs, the land becomes drier and dustier, with reduced foliage. With diminishing water sources, wildlife tends to gather around the remaining waterholes, creating a prime opportunity for observing and capturing the park's fauna. Our skilled guides are well-versed in tracking India's magnificent tigers within these parks, and you can elevate your tiger-watching adventure by staying at distinctive and picturesque lodges.

Tiger Safari in India

  • The largest of the big cats, the Bengal tiger reaches four metres in length and weighs in at around 300 kilograms.
  • Tigers have an unmistakable and unique black striped pattern over orange fur which helps them to stay camouflaged as they lay in wait for their prey. No two tigers will have the same stripes, similar to the fingerprints of a human.
  • Generally they are solitary animals, except during mating season and when the female has cubs with her.
  • Renowned for their strength and power, tigers hunt alone taking medium to larger prey, travelling long distances to catch buffalo and wild pigs, as well as other large mammals.
  • They are one of the few cats that are very comfortable in water often swimming or lounging in the shallows to cool off.
  • Females give birth to litters of between two and six cubs at a time and proceed to look after them for about two or three years, after which they leave to find their own territory.
  • ·Bengal tigers can be hunting through the forests and tall grasses of the Indian jungle where their stripes help camouflage them. Growing up to 10 feet in length, they really are a magnificent sight to see.

Bengal Tiger Conservation

Despite historically living across huge parts of Asia, tigers are endangered to critically endangered with only around 3,200 animals left in the wild with three subspecies already extinct (Balinese, Javan and Caspian Tiger).

Due to hunting and disforestation, Bengal tiger populations have reduced, from hundreds of thousands to just a few thousand. National Parks across India have set conservation areas to protect these magnificent creatures and therefore tiger watching safaris are truly unique. Launched in April 1973, Project Tiger is a conservation scheme by the National Tiger Conservation Authority which established nine tiger reserves. Today, there is 47 tiger reserves.

Alongside conservationist Alexander Batalov, you’ll track the big cats and set camera traps on a unique adventure that truly puts you on the front line of wildlife conservation.

“After a couple of hours we enter the boundary of the forest for the first time. There is snow on the ground but it doesn’t look too deep. Some way into the drive, Alexander stops the vehicle just over a bridge. Tiger tracks are all around; these are very fresh, as in minutes old. We are allowed out of the jeep but told to be careful as the tiger is likely to be close. It is now pitch black but the excitement level goes up. Alexander is convinced these are the tracks of a female he knows and she is watching us close by. We will find out how close she was tomorrow…”

A taste of what to expect

Arrival in delhi.

  • Upon arrival at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, you will be welcomed by your &Beyond India host and chauffeured to The Oberoi, New Delhi.
  • Delhi was established around 900 BC and is today the capital of the largest democracy of the world. A mixture of bustling international metropolis, medieval chaos and regal splendour, the city is crammed to bursting point with tombs, temples, monuments and ruins, all of which exist side by side with modern suburbs and glass and chrome skyscrapers.
  • In this quintessentially Indian city a surprise lies around every corner. Colonial architecture in New Delhi is combined with ancient Islamic and Mughal ruins, modern suburban developments and even a touch of rural India. It houses two UNESCO World Heritage sites; Humayun’s Tomb and The Qutub Minar.
  • Located in New Delhi, India’s capital city, The Oberoi New Delhi reflects the city’s spirit in a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary sophistication. Located close to the city centre near business, commercial and shopping districts, the luxury hotel overlooks Delhi’s prestigious Golf Club on one side and the heritage site of Humayun’s Tomb on the other.
  • After breakfast, meet your expedition leader Aditya Panda in the lobby for a quick brief about the day’s events before setting out for a sightseeing tour of Delhi.
  • Start the day with a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humayun’s Tomb, a complex of buildings built as the Mughal Emperor Humayun’s Tomb, commissioned by Humayun’s wife Hamida Banu Begum in 1562.
  • Followed by the tour you will embark on a drive through New Delhi’s former colonial expanse, stopping by the magnificent President’s Palace, known as the Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate, the World War I memorial. The official residence of the President of India stands at the opposite end of the Rajpath from India Gate.
  • India Gate is a 42m (137ft) high stone arch of triumph stands at the eastern end of the Rajpath. It bears the names of 85,000 Indian Army soldiers who died in the campaigns of WWI, the North West frontier operations of the same time, and the 1919 Afghan fiasco.
  • Return to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure.
  • Enjoy a cocktail reception and an interaction with a renowned conservationist. The focus of the conversation today will be the challenges and the successes of tiger conservation in India. How science and money from various sections of the society and government helped in the overall conservation of habitat. The protection of landscapes lead to an increased population of wild tigers and many other iconic animals.
  • This will be followed by a delectable dinner at the hotel.

Delhi / Jorhat / Kaziranga National Park

  • This morning you will be met and driven to the airport for your flight to Jorhat.
  • On arrival at Jorhat Airport, you will be met and driven to the nearby Haroo Charai Tea Estate (approximately 30 minutes’ drive) for a delicious lunch with a walk around the estate learning the intricate art of tea cultivation.
  • After lunch, continue for another two hours to Diphlu River Lodge in Kaziranga National Park where you will spend the next 3 nights.
  • Diphlu River Lodge has a boundary river that separates its extensive grounds from the national park itself, and the jungle views are exceptional. The lodge makes full use of local materials and artifacts that blend in with the stunning natural surroundings.
  • Home to some of India’s largest mammals, Kaziranga National Park boasts a thriving population of one-horned rhino, Asian elephant, and Asiatic wild buffalo, as well as the swamp deer known as barasingha, wild boar, sloth bear, and tigers. Everything appears larger than life here. Some of the largest snakes in the world, including the reticulated and Indian pythons, king cobra, and banded krait, slither through the vegetation. The reserve is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with almost 500 species encountered, including many migrants.

Kaziranga National Park

  • Embark on a scheduled early morning and afternoon safaris in shared vehicles.
  • A park drive inside Kaziranga National Park is very different from other parks in India. Large parts of the park are made up of tall grasslands with patches of swampy water bodies covered with beautiful water lilies. One-horned rhinos and herds of Asian elephants are seen busily grazing. Swamp deer or barasingha are often seen wading through the water bodies chomping on weeds, and during the rut hanging weeds on their large antlers to impress the females.
  • Incredible for birdwatching, a variety of water birds are found around the waterbodies as well as an impressive number of birds of prey in the forested areas.
  • Carry your binoculars and look out for the endangered hoolock gibbons and the swamp francolin.
  • In between the safaris you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) located close to the national park.
  • CWRC is a facility where orphaned or injured wild animals of several species are treated and subsequently returned to the wild. The centre is run by Wildlife Trust of India and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
  • The centre attends to a wide range of wildlife emergencies resulting from natural or anthropogenic causes. Observe how the handlers tend to the orphaned animals and learn about the various challenges that are faced in these areas and how the animals are rescued and rehabilitated.
  • You will be guided through the centre getting to see the animals and thereafter attend a talk explaining the kind of work they do.

Kaziranga National Park / Kolkata

  • Early this morning you have the option to go on another exciting safari inside the national park.
  • Return to the lodge and we will drive (approximately 1-hour drive from Lodge) to Silghat for an optional river cruise (in lieu of the afternoon safari) on the Brahmaputra River.
  • Home to many magnificent freshwater residents, the Brahmaputra River is one of the key waterways in Asia, spanning 3 848km (2 391mi.) in length. The river drains the Tibetan plateau and then flows through India and Bangladesh. Along its journey it is fed by many smaller rivers and streams.
  • Lunch, tea, coffee and snacks will be served on-board and the cruise will last about five hours. Look out for the sleek Gangetic dolphins.
  • After an early lunch you will be driven for four-hour to Raipur Airport to connect for your flight to Kolkata.
  • You will be met on arrival and driven to The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat, conveniently located close to the airport. Take a dip in the outdoor pool or indulge yourself in the Heavenly Spa.
  • Spend one night in The Westin Kolkata Rajarhat. Accommodation will be in a Deluxe Room. Your stay will be on Half Board Basis. (Room with breakfast and dinner)

Kanha National Park

  • Your morning starts early with a packed breakfast as you are driven to the airport (approximately 10- minute drive) for your flight to Raipur.
  • You will meet on arrival at Raipur Airport and be driven to Singinawa Jungle Lodge on the edge of Kanha National Park with charming styled cottages set in a forest area (approximately a four-hour drive).
  • Kanha National Park has an ideal habitat for tigers and their prey species. Prime tiger wilderness, it was one of the first areas to be protected under Project Tiger and is one of the largest conservation areas today. Lush sal and bamboo forests are interspersed with vast grassy meadows while the Banjaar River forms the south-western border of the park and provides a steady water source for the abundant wildlife.

Kanha National Park / Delhi

  • Explore the dense jungles of Kanha National Park on early morning and afternoon park drives in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. A specially trained naturalist will accompany you throughout, pointing out and explaining details about the jungle.
  • Step into the famous Jungle Book as you look out for large herds of spotted deer and swamp deer that are preyed on by packs of dhole (Asiatic wild dogs) and tigers. A series of large meadows are interconnected by an excellent network of forest tracks and dirt roads.
  • Nocturnal animals like fox, hyena, jungle cat, civets, ratel, or honey badger and hares can be seen outside the park confines. Gliding in the water, turtles, and amphibians drift and float. Cast your eye to the tops of shady trees and glimpse kaleidoscopic fluttering as hundreds of bird species paint the sky with magnificent splashes of colour.
  • On one of the evenings, you will be joined by renowned tiger scientist, Dr. Raghu Chundawat who will share his experiences from many years of field research and a lifetime of knowledge on Indian wildlife and its conservation.
  • The next day, you will hop in the game vehicle for a short early morning safari in shared vehicles.
  • After an early lunch you will be driven for four-hour to Raipur Airport to connect for your flight to Delhi.
  • You will be met on arrival and driven to ‘Hyatt Andaz’ in Aerocity, New Delhi (approximately 10 minutes’ drive) where you will spend the night.

Ranthambhore National Park

  • Following breakfast, around 08h30, you will be driven to the Oberoi Vanyavilas Resort in Ranthambhore National park (approximately 5 hours’ drive)
  • After lunch at the nearby restaurant, you will continue on your journey to Ranthambhore National Park.
  • Tucked between the rugged Aravalli and Vindhya hills, the Ranthambhore National Park boasts a magnificent landscape with boulder-strewn highland plateaus, lakes, and rivers, dotted with old forts and abandoned mosques, creating a wonderful atmosphere for both bird and mammal viewing.
  • Ranthambhore National Park is perhaps most famous for being one of the original ‘Project Tiger’ reserves and it still affords some of the best opportunities anywhere in India to see a tiger. At the center of the park lay the ruins of the 10th to 16th century Ranthambhore Fort which dominates the leafy forests from its perch atop a dramatic rocky outcrop.
  • You will be met on arrival and assisted to check-in at The Oberoi Vanyavilas.
  • Embark on a scheduled early morning and afternoon safari in an exclusive vehicle.
  • Park drives in Ranthambhore National Park are in open 4×4 vehicles. You will be accompanied by an experienced naturalist who will explain and point out interesting flora and fauna.
  • The park is one of India’s finest examples of dry deciduous forest interspersed with grassland. It is where the zoogeographical zones of the Orient and the Ethiopian merge and it is possible to see tigers from the orient hunt chinkara (gazelles) and antelope. The entire forest has scattered battlements and remnants of abandoned buildings that tigers are said to frequent.
  • Ranthambhore National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and became one of the original Project Tiger Reserves from 1973. The mammalian diversity of the park mirrors its significance as a premier conservation site. Apart from its flagship attraction, the forest is also home to the leopard, sloth bear, the jackal, hyena, wolf, and caracal among the carnivores, besides a wide variety of ungulates, the most prominent of which are the nilgai, India’s largest antelope, and the majestic sambar, a forest deer.
  • Ornithologists will appreciate the reserve’s woods and lakes that are home to over 250 bird species making it an important bird sanctuary in its own right.
  • Easily the most visible of these is the plucky rufous treepie, which is famous for its catwalks on top of safari vehicles and vans. Other fascinating water-birds such as the painted stork and the purple heron can be seen in large numbers along the park’s many lakes and water-bodies. The crested serpent eagle and the fishing eagle are among the raptors at the top of the avian hierarchy.
  • This morning you will be driven to Agra (an approximately four-hour drive).
  • The city of Agra flourished under the patronage of the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan and attracted artisans from Persia and central Asia. Agra is where Emperor Shah Jahan celebrated his immortal love for his Empress in marble, the Taj Mahal. Agra is still famous for handicrafts products such as inlay work on marble, carpets, jewellery, zari and embroidery work.
  • You will be met on arrival and assisted to check-in at The Oberoi Amarvilas .
  • The Oberoi Amarvilas is considered one of India’s best hotels is a mere 600m (1968ft)  away from the Taj Mahal , every single room in this property looks towards the monument.
  • After settling in, you will embark on a guided tour of the Agra Fort and Taj Mahal to view it at sunset.
  • For many years through the Mughal rule, especially during the period when Agra was the capital of the Empire, Agra Fort was expanded and reworked extensively with marble and pietra dura inlay. Notable buildings within the fort include the Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Jehangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (mirrored palace) and Musamman Burj.
  • The Taj Mahal is said to be one of the most elegant and harmonious buildings in the world and is the manifestation of the wealth and luxury of Mughal art as seen in its architecture, garden design, painting, and calligraphy.
  • Revisit Taj Mahal at the time of sunrise, and then later return to your hotel for breakfast before embarking on a guided tour of the magnificent red sand stone Agra Fort.
  • Followed by the tour you will be driven to Delhi (approximately 3 ½ hours’ drive)

Tigers, Conservation & Adventure: A New Photo Pro Safari in India

Tigers, Conservation & Adventure: A New Photo Pro Safari in India

As an Expedition Leader for Nat Hab’s India Tiger Safari: A Photo Pro Expedition , Conan Dumenil wears a lot of hats. This eleven-day trip is part of the Photo Pro series, and Conan’s hands-on tips, knowledge and expertise bring a fresh perspective to the proceedings.

His passion for conservation, culture and adventure comes across vividly when he speaks about the different legs of the journey.

Making the rounds by rickshaw in New Delhi sets the stage, before taking in the colorful architecture of Jaipur and then spending four days exploring Ranthambore National Park in search of Bengal tigers.

Throw in a balloon ride, a leopard reserve, the Taj Mahal and a stay at an authentic safari camp, and a bigger picture comes into focus.

The wild tiger population in India is the largest in the world. It has doubled in size since 2006, two years after Conan started guiding. Tiger reserves and national parks including Ranthambore allow for the upswing.

One of the biggest issues facing the Bengal tiger is human conflict. The cats fall prey to train accidents when crossing railway lines, and farmers hunt and poison the cats because they prey on cattle.

Inside the park, tigers hold sway. During Conan’s last trip, he talks of seeing a mother and her cubs among ancient ruins that served as a hunting ground for the Maharajahs of Jaipur.

While traversing along the nearby water’s edge, the tigress stopped, hissed and stood her ground against a threat below the lake’s surface. The crocodile lying in wait is one of the natural rivals that tigers often battle. Being deft swimmers, tigers hold their own in the water, but more often than naught prefer to walk away.

Here are some select highlights of our conversation with Conan about the trip, his recommendations for photographers and the local protocols regarding safety.

Regarding Gear

Conan’s kit includes a mix of the classic and modern, changing between an SLR, digital camera and a variety of lenses. His go-to choice in close quarters is his phone, using it in city settings instead of carrying around more cumbersome equipment.

Conan stresses that people should take the time to know their gear and its settings: being unfamiliar with your camera or a piece of new equipment can lead to missed photo opportunities in the field.

He also recommends that travelers bring a cotton drawstring bag or the equivalent to evade dust.

Photography Resources

When asked, Conan’s top primers for photographers remain close to home. Nat Hab’s photography webinars are a fruitful resource. In addition, Richard de Gouveia, a fellow Nat Hab Expedition Leader and collaborator out of South Africa, has developed a series of wildlife photography guides with Sony that Conan highly recommends.

The Park and Favorite Days Out

Each trip is capped at six people, split between three jeeps with a driver and guide. Like other parts of the world, park guides are local and required inside the park.

The Nat Hab team arranges the logistics, so the same local staff stays with the tour the entire time they are in the park, putting travelers side by side with experts in their own backyard. The number of vehicles inside the park is limited, and guides visit different areas each day to reduce overcrowding.

Conan’s favorite days as an Expedition Leader are hard to choose, but ‘free’ days in the park make it to the top of the list. Due to special permits, two of the days in the park don’t follow the assigned routes or time frames normally required of tours. This translates into more time chasing tigers on their home turf.

Bengal tigers inside the park number just above 90 according to unofficial census numbers released in 2021. Conan is quick to point out that the numbers fluctuate between the census and the actual points on the map being covered.

He also adds that tigers stick to their own territory. Until pushed out by younger cats, guides recognize individual tigers by their markings in established zones, early in the day before the heat sets in.

The Big Five

Conan’s bucket list of species to spot during this photo safari gives credence to the diversity found in the wilds of northern India. In addition to big cats, over 300 species of birds live here, as well as large predators on land and in the water.

1. Bengal Tigers

Growing to lengths of more than 9 feet and weighing in at as much as 500 pounds, Bengal tigers make a regal first impression. Aside from their ability to swim, tigers leap distances of 16 feet. Each has a distinct personality and many live for as long as 25 years.

The stripes and color of Indian tigers stand out, unique to each individual. Markings and patterns act like fingerprints, used to identify tigers in their respective territories and keep track of each couple’s offspring.

Tigers and people in the villages that surround the park frequently clash. Older cats get pushed out of their hunting grounds and cross the borders of the reserve in search of new frontiers. Seeing tigers in the wild puts a fresh face to the problem and leads the way to new conversations about what can be done.

2. Indian Leopards

During the first days of this safari, travelers visit the Jhalana Leopard Reserve inside the city of Jaipur. The 8-square-mile oasis is a haven for wild leopards—its forests shelter more than twenty of the cats. It’s one of the best places to photograph leopards in India, conveniently located in the midst of 3 million people.

Conan uses this excursion as a first-hand introduction to the challenges conservation initiatives face in the country. The growing populations of both humans and wildlife pose threats to all involved.

3. Mugger Crocodiles

Crocodiles are one of the few predators in Ranthambore National Park that make tigers nervous. Lying in wait offshore, the lightning-quick reptiles attack animals on land with little regard for size and shape. Spotting them is half the battle; catching them on film is another adventure altogether.

4. Indian Pitta

Often seen at outlooks around the park, the Indian pitta’s bright plumage blends from green and yellow to red and black. An apt subject for wildlife photographers of all levels, its frequent appearance bodes well for those in search of avian pictures.

  5. Sloth Bears

Spotted in different zones throughout the park, sloth bears seldom fail to impress. While their gait is cumbersome, they move quickly when prompted and can hold their own against tigers if threatened.

Baloo, from Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book , takes his appearance from the sloth bear. Sloth bears’ shaggy black fur and white snouts lend themselves to portraits and action shots, standing out against the native tundra and overhanging forests of the surrounding area.

Practicalities and Essentials

Accommodations during each section of the trip have top-notch amenities and staff; including internet, international menus, manicured gardens and swimming pools.

When exploring the park, a classic safari camp on the border of the protected area serves as a home base for meals, including lunch and debriefing after each day’s activities. Meals and meetings might take place outside to take advantage of the exotic surroundings, giving Conan and travelers a chance to catch up and compare notes before the next day’s adventure.

Trips run between April and June before the monsoon season. It’s the spring season in name only—expect warm weather and bring a bathing suit to cool off in the pool.

tiger safari expedition

India’s national parks are full of lush vegetation and intriguing wildlife.

Photography

This is a tailor-made trip that focuses on photography—each day there are new land and cityscapes, iconic monuments, and natural wonders to capture. Conan’s ability as a photographer and his experience helping others discover new ground, both literally and through the eyes of the camera, puts this adventure in a class of its own.

Conservation and Sustainable Travel

Conservation is at the heart of every Nat Hab safari in India and beyond. Our partnership with World Wildlife Fund gives our guests a front-row seat to the wilderness and wildlife that makes India so appealing.

Conan and the team of guides, drivers and support staff are passionate about India and showing those who visit the beauty of this country and its people. Their knowledge and know-how reveal new discoveries around every corner.

The trip highlights both nature and culture, exploring the relationship between the staggering population and the growing animal kingdom. This is an experience that inspires and educates, bringing together the best of two worlds and asking the question, “Where do we go from here?”
