Get To Know: Coach Party

The road to Coach Party ’s debut album KILLYJOY has been a short time coming for fans and a long time for the group. Since 2019, the four-piece band from England’s Isle of Wight shared several EPs, a slew of bopping singles and held their own playing huge festival stages, including a stop at Glastonbury in June.

KILLJOY ’s final single “Be That Girl” debuted this week on BBC 1 Radio as the “Hottest Record in the World.” The band describes the track as an epiphany, complementing the record’s five other singles, including “Born Leader,” “What’s The Point In Life” and “Micro Aggression.” They even worked past nerves and played support for Queens of the Stone Age during the Josh Homme-led crew’s return to the UK this summer. 

Now Beyond The Stage has had the chance to speak with Coach Party’s vocalist and bassist Jess Eastwood to discuss KILLJOY , the need for thriving local scenes in all English towns and gorgeous French mountains. Coach Party has been on the BTS radar since summer 2021 when they released the After Party EP.  Jess provides a peak behind the curtain to reveal the band’s work that can be appreciated. Read the full interview below.

BTS: It’s been really cool to follow along and see Coach Party blow up. Now you’re getting ready to release your debut record. How does that feel for the band?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: I feel like the organic growth has been nice. It feels right that we should be doing an album. We’ve been together since 2016. And that was not “Coach Party.” We started as me and Steph (Norris), our guitarist, and we made a band with both our names called Jeff. By 2019 we had like one or two songs out and it wasn’t a serious thing and we were just doing it for fun. In 2019, our manager heard them and said “This is really cool.” He said, “I love your music but I don’t love the name Jeff. Can you please call yourself something else? Can we delete everything? And just like start again?” We figured, what have we got to lose? So we did and that’s how we became Coach Party.

BTS: There are a billion ways to hyper-generalize rock bands nowadays, but there is a variety on KILLJOY. There are times when this record slows down or has an ‘electronic’ feel. Does Coach Party label themselves a certain way?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: I think it’s so difficult, isn’t it? I guess any sort of interview that you have to do, always starts with “Coach Party is an indie rock band or ‘shoegazers.’” It’s different more or less every time, but why? We listened to so many different types of music. I grew up on pop punk, emo, that type of vibe. Now I just listen to pop music. Guy Page (Coach Party’s drummer) is big into 90s nu-metal. Steph listens to 2000s indie bands. Joe Perry (Coach Party’s guitarist) listens to Queens of the Stone Age. I listened to KILLYJOY and I can’t pin it myself. I’m like, oh, well, this guitar also must be rock. But what does that mean? Labels are not a thing anymore, so let’s get rid of them.

BTS: Your bandmates are fans of Queens of the Stone Age, so that must have been a fun time supporting them in June. What was that experience like?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: It was wild. We are all fans but Joe has lived and breathed Queens of the Stone Age since he was like 12-years-old. So you can imagine we were a bit nervous the first night. Then Josh Homme just came barging into our dressing room with a big bottle of tequila and said “Friends? Cool. Let’s have some fun!” I was like, “alright!”

BTS: Were those some of the biggest crowds to see you play?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: We played our biggest show last year in May to 97,000 people. We’ve had other festival shows, our own tours and supported others. We feel like we’re quite used to some good crowds at this point.

BTS: KILLJOY comes out September 8 and then you begin an EU/UK tour the next night. There’s going to be a bit of buzz. Are you excited to play a fresh record for audiences all over the continent?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: Yeah, yeah, it definitely gets old playing old stuff. We gig so much. We love doing what we’ve been doing, playing hundreds of gigs a year. Playing the old stuff has kind of gotten a little bit dusty. So it will be really nice. Like, we’ve been playing this new stuff now for about three or four months. It feels good, but to play it all will be so good.

BTS: Coach Party is from the Isle of Wight, and you’ve gotten to play all over. Are there special moments you’ve all had on the road, and do you enjoy going home?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: We were in France of couple of weeks ago and there was this humongous lake that overlooked mountains and it was warm. It was like a movie. I remember all of us there kind of just having a bit of a moment. We thought, “Wow, we’re here.” I think we don’t stop and think about those moments enough, especially when you’re traveling so much. I’ve been in London for a few months but am moving back to Isle of Wight to get a house with the band. 

BTS: What’s the scene like there?

Jess Eastwood of Coach Party: There’s definitely a huge scene. It’s kind of great at the minute. It’s really lively, which is nice. It’s nice to go back to that. I just think we need to have like a few more live venues there to showcase that because we only have one. I think we could do with another one.

Coach Party’s first-ever full-length record comes out Friday, September 8 via Chess Club Records before the band plays all over the EU/UK for several months. The tour dates are below.

Hailing from the Isle of Wight, located off the south coast of England, rising alt-rockers Coach Party are set to arrive in the U.S. this weekend for the start of their first-ever tour on American soil.

Continuing to support their 2023 debut album, ‘ Killjoy ,’ the foursome will kick off their U.S. trek at The Echo in Los Angeles, CA on March 10th, where they will perform alongside Sea Lemon [ TIX ].

Following that, Coach Party will head to SXSW in Austin, TX from March 13th through the 16th for a series of showcases, including performances at the Sheraton (Downright Austin) Backyard, Radio Day Stage in Ballroom A, and Esther’s Follies ( get more info ).

After SXSW, Coach Party will travel to Fort Worth, TX on March 17th for day two of the third annual ‘Southside Spillover,’ where they will perform alongside Honey Saxon, Bermuda Search Party, Moon Walker, and many others [ TIX ].

Concluding their stateside run, Coach Party will journey to Brooklyn, NY for their Big Apple headlining debut at Union Pool on March 19th, where they will perform alongside Trinket [ TIX ].

Outstanding performance.

Coach party plus support where absolutely amazing. I'm in awe of such talent. Especially more or less starting out. I can affirm that all involved with DEFINITELY be going-places, seriously. Worth the trip from mid-wilts to Newport. Despite railway network interruption. My first time at :Le Pub. Great venue, friendly and bespoke. Very passionate about live music: so i can recommend anyday. Really thrilled and on cloud 9 !!

With the House of Commons adjourned for the summer, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is taking his political message on the road in a campaign-style RV trip around Quebec.

Poilievre will visit a number of Quebec ridings over the next few weeks in an RV that features a photo of himself and his family along with a "Common Sense" slogan.

Poilievre told Radio-Canada that the tour is about "listening to Quebecers" and talking to them about cost-of-living issues.

"Politicians and the federal government don't care about Quebecers now," he said in French.

"The centralist and inflationist government of Justin Trudeau costs too much. I want to lower those costs for Quebecers and share my common sense plan."

Conservatives have enjoyed a strong lead in national polls recently, but surveys released this week by Abacus and Angus Reid show the Tories trailing the Bloc Québécois in Quebec.

The objective of the RV tour is to send a "strong signal" that the Conservatives have Quebec's interests "at heart," Poilievre's Quebec lieutenant Pierre Paul-Hus told the Canadian Press in a French interview.

"The image that people currently have of Pierre Poilievre is the guy who fights in the House of Commons. It's the image that is on TV that people see," Paul-Hus said. "But the man, the human who shakes hands, who chats with you, every time someone meets him and talks to him, they say, 'Wow, that's not how I saw him.'"

Quebec Conservative MPs have been using their time in question period to accuse the Bloc of propping up the Liberal government. But the Conservatives also appear to be going after Liberal ridings in the province.

Poilievre held a rally in the Montreal riding of Mount Royal on Wednesday night, where he introduced Neil Oberman as the Conservative candidate  in the next election.

Oberman, a lawyer for more than 20 years, recently represented students who filed an injunction request against the McGill pro-Palestinian encampment.

The lawyer will try to win the seat away from Anthony Housefather, who has represented Mount Royal since 2015. The riding is a Liberal stronghold, held by the party since 1940.

Both the Abacus and Angus Reid surveys released this week show the Tories have a 20-point lead over the Liberals nationwide.

Some Liberals have acknowledged publicly the tough position the party is in as MPs return to their ridings for the summer.

"We're swimming into the tide. It's tough," P.E.I. MP Sean Casey told reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday.

"It's frustrating when you're swimming into the tide, but that's a function of politics, that's life. I'm not going to work any less."

When asked Wednesday if there is anything the Liberals could do to turn their polling fortunes around, Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan said "there's no magic formula."

"Just work harder and just make sure you get the word out on the work that you are doing," he said.

The duck boats are rallying! Follow the live coverage from the Celtics parade today

The celebration of the Boston Celtics' NBA championship will be in full swing today, Friday, June 21, as over a million Boston sports fans ― who are no strangers to the iconic rolling rallies and duck boat parades that celebrated multiple championship titles in the past two decades ― are expected to flock to the city once again.

The parade will celebrate the Celtics' blowout   106-88 victory  over the  Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA title in five games. The win marks the team's 18th title, breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers and setting a new record.

Commentators are estimating well over one million people showed up for the parade, which wrapped up just ahead of 12:30.

While the crowd was huge, people were commenting on how well behaved it was. Laura Cunning, of South Boston, said the crowd was energetic but got along very well.

"It was great, a great presentation of our city and our champions," Cunning said.

The Celtics parade is about halfway through

The crowd was electric as Coach Joe Mazzulla, Kristaps Porzingis and MVP Jayson Tatum made their way through Boylston Street on their duck boats. Chants of "MVP" echoes through neighborhood as attendees raved against the steel barricades as their champions passed by.

The Duck Boats have begun rolling in Boston, displaying the championship trophy to more than 1 million onlookers. While original crowd estimates said about a million people were likely to be in attendance, people at the scene are estimating the crowd is larger.

Mufaro Mutuswa of Billerica said she was excited for the parade to come through.

"Right now, it's very hot but I wouldn't trade it for anything," Mutuswa said

Mutuswa also said she is a Celtics fan because of her Boston pride, and because she likes winning.

"I like to be a part of this," Mutuswa said. "This is absolutely amazing, it's always worth it in the end."

The slogan refers to how many sports pundits doubted Tatum's ability to lead the team to a championship during the past year. The t-shirt is a symbol that Tatum has apparently embraced those who don't believe in him.

With the parade about to start, fans are lining the streets in their Championship gear.

Steve Gladstone of Needham said he's been a Celtics fan all his life.

"It's awesome to spend time with my son and be able to celebrate a Celtics championship," Gladstone said.

He said that his children have been spoiled by so many Celtics wins.

"It used to be the city who's always expecting a loss," Gladstone said. "Now, we're ready to win every year."

Fans heading to Boston to watch Celtics parade

Waves of green hit Union Station Friday morning as sports fans from across Central Massachusetts began the trip to Boston to celebrate the Celtics first championship title in 16 years.

"I bleed green," Wilson Montalvo, 44, of Worcester said as he flexed his "Boston strong" tattoo and showed off his hat with a 508 area code.

Officials celebrate the Celtics

Ahead of the parade stepping off, state leaders thanked the Celtics team for the pride they brought to Boston.

"We are in love with this team because it is a team. And they had given us so much, " Governor Maura Healey, who was a professional basketball player, said. "And here's the thing about basketball, the team game, everybody's gotta roll, everybody's got a part. Some nights it was different person stepping up, but they got it done as a team."

As great as they are on the court, she said they are even better off the court.

She told people to "show love and appreciation not just for the trophy, but for what they give to community, to the state, to the region. They are role models. They are leaders. And today we're going to party and celebrate the Boston Celtics," she said.

Celtics players do Q&A before parade starts

Before heading out on the Duck Boats, members of the Boston Celtics gathered at TD Garden for a Q&A forum, hosted by former Celtic and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine.

Players had the chance to comment on winning the championship.

"These guys were ready for that moment," said center Al Horford. "I'm happy we were able to get it done."

"I'm glad on this side now, " added guard Jrue Holliday. He noted when he first arrived to the team this year, he "knew that we had something special."

Guard Derrick White commented, "We didn't want to skip any steps...we knew what the end goal was."

Center Kristaps Porzingis said he was upset that he got hurt before being able to help the team wrap up the championship series.

"It was heartbreaking for me," he said. "We took care of business."

"Whatever it took for us to win, that's what we were willing to do," Shooting guard Jalen Brown added.

"It starts from the top down," said forward Jayson Tatum, on how the players function on the court, citing Horford as his prime example of inspiration.

The duck boats have been used for championship parades in Boston since 2002. The  Boston Duck Boat website  states, "Boston Duck Tours, over the years, has had the honor and pleasure of hosting four of Boston’s sports teams in Rolling Rally Championship parades 12 different times."

According to the website, with duck boats "players could stand on, and wave to the crowds below. It was close enough to get these players right up to their fans. But, also far enough to keep them from being mobbed by the crowds."

Officials are strongly advising that people take public transportation to the parade, as there are a number of parking bans and street closures in effect.

For the event, the MBTA had increased service on on the subway and on the commuter rail. Here's what the MBTA says:

• Green Line will operate at peak frequency with trains operating about every 6-8 minutes
• Orange Line trains will operate every 7-8 minutes
• Red Line trains will operate every 6-7 minutes between Alewife and JFK/UMass and every 13-14 minutes on the Ashmont and Braintree Branches
• Blue Line trains will operate every 5-6 minutes.

Celtics Parade Boston weather forecast

After a stretch of record-breaking heat, the weather is looking a bit cooler in Boston today. As of 7 a.m. temperatures were in the mid-70s, which is what officials were hoping for when they delayed the parade a few days to get past the heat wave.

The National Weather Service says during the parade temperatures could have a Real Feel in the mid-80s. People have been advised to dress for the weather and stay hydrated.

While there is a chance of thunderstorms today, NWS has said they expect it to s tay dry in Boston for the Celtics parade.

What items are banned from the Celtics parade?

The following is prohibited at Championship parade:

• Alcoholic beverages
• Large bags, coolers or glass containers
• Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), commonly referred to as "drones," along the parade route
• Weapons of any kind (or replicas of such)
