Stockholm Cruise Port Guide

There’s just something about Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and beating heart. It’s an intellectual city like Berlin and brimming with cultural artifacts like Rome. On a Scandinavia cruise , Stockholm is a bit of a wildcard. It’s a leader in the design space that put Scandinavian minimalism on the map. The city is home to an array of museums, historic buildings, and genuinely delicious eats scattered across the 14 connected islands that comprise it. Stockholm is also a pioneer in the foodie scene, where expensive delicacies and down-to-earth street foods collide.

For a city that has been around since the 13th century, Stockholm balances hundreds of years of history with a sleek, modern energy. On your Stockholm cruise, don’t miss a walking tour through the cobblestoned streets of Gamla Stan, the Old Town. Spend an afternoon at the National Museum or the Vasa Museum, and you’ll leave with more knowledge about Vikings and Swedish art than you ever thought possible. Because Stockholm is a set of islands connected by bridges, there’s often a light breeze and plenty of opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and water sports during the summer months. Stockholm is the perfect introduction to the finer things in life in Scandinavia.

You’d be hard-pressed to arrive in Stockholm and not go to Old Town, the historic city center also known as Gamla Stan. Walk these cobblestoned streets surrounded by hundreds of years of history, plus plenty of modern flourishes, including restaurants, galleries, and cafes just waiting for you to explore.

National Museum

Art buffs and novices to the history of Sweden will be amazed by the world’s largest collection of Swedish art at the National Museum, where sculptures, paintings, and mixed media works dating back hundreds of years are on display for all to enjoy. Dive into Stockholm’s rich art history here.

Vasa Museum

The island of Djurgarden is home to the world’s only intact Viking ship, which is in remarkably good condition despite sinking in 1628. It’s the most visited museum in Scandinavia, so be prepared for crowds. A guided tour is a great way to learn about the museum’s detailed history.

Kungliga Slottet

The royal family of Sweden has lived in this palace since the 1600s and continues to call Kungliga Slottet home today. There’s a fascinating Changing of the Guard ceremony in the afternoon. Guided tours of the palace are a structured, smart way to see as many of the over 600 elaborate palace rooms as possible.

Top things to do in stockholm, kayak at långholmen kajak.

Kayaking along the picturesque canals in Stockholm is a bucket list item, just like taking a gondola along the canals of Venice. Hop in your kayak and spend the day on the water, stopping for lunch or a coffee when you’re ready to take a break from paddling.

Royal National City Park

Over six miles of lush greenery set this national park in the middle of Stockholm apart from other green spaces. It’s considered a marvel in urban development where you can experience its peaceful nature and then head to the amusement park, stop in at one of the museums, or watch a show. Visitors of all ages will find something to be entertained by here.

This open-air museum and zoo is dedicated to showing what life was like before industrialization swept the nation. Over a million people come to Skansen and walk these grounds each year. You can take a guided tour if you’d like, or venture out on your own as you watch reenactments or spot exotic animals along the way.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Stockholm Cruise Port

Certain types of dishes rule the menu in Sweden, making the cuisine in Stockholm some of the most unique combinations of food in the world. Swedish meatballs have skyrocketed in popularity in America, but you’ve got to try the real deal in Stockholm. Pickled herring, potatoes and sour cream, boiled eggs, and salmon are all popular items on menus, often served in a buffet style. Bakeries offering delights like cinnamon rolls and sweet buns are popular breakfast items to enjoy with coffee.

Culture & History of the Stockholm Cruise Port

Nearly 2 million people live in Stockholm, but it wasn’t always the sleek capital of Sweden that it is today. In fact, this archipelago of islands didn’t rise to prominence as a trade center and global power until the 17th century. In the 19th century, the city rapidly industrialized, which made it possible for even more Swedes to move to the islands. Today, Stockholm is where much of Sweden’s industry is based, and is therefore a key part of the country’s economy. The city has grown not only in size but in global recognition as one of the most beautiful capital cities in Scandinavia, and has earned acclaim for its art institutions, eye for design, and culture. As a major coastal tourist destination in this part of Europe, there are many cruises to Stockholm from the UK and other nearby ports.

Stockholm Port Facilities & Location

There are two cruise ship ports in the city, and Frihamnen is the one that larger ships tend to dock in. It’s a short taxi ride or 15-minute bus ride to get to the city center from the port. There’s also a ferry terminal.

Transportation in Stockholm

Public transportation in Stockholm is efficient and relatively quick, but navigating on foot is also a perfectly good option for a stop on a Stockholm cruise. Many of the islands are connected by ferries, and taxis and Ubers are easily hailed. Locals often use bicycles to get around, and renting a bike for the day is an easy, scenic way to see the city. In other words, there’s no shortage of options.

Shopping Near the Stockholm Cruise Port

Swedish crystal and household items are among the most popular souvenirs that travelers take back with them after cruises to Stockholm from the UK and other places, but that doesn’t mean shopping in Stockholm is all fine wares. Iris Hantverk, Nordiska Galleriet, and other stores are a must-see for design geeks. You’ll find your standard souvenir shacks scattered around the cruise port, selling t-shirts, shot glasses, magnets, and other little trinkets to remember Sweden by.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency in Sweden is the kronor (kr). Paying with debit or credit cards is more common than using cash, as Sweden is moving toward a cash-free system. Tipping and haggling in Stockholm aren’t the norm. If there isn’t a service charge already included in your dinner or lunch bill, feel free to tack on 10% as a tip. Like other places, it’s polite to round up when you’re taking a taxi as a tip for the driver.

Stockholm cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-07-01 04:17

Port Stockholm cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Stockholm, Sweden. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Stockholm is a major Baltic Sea cruise port and Sweden's capital city. The city covers a total area of approx 190 km2 (73 mi2) and has a population of around 935,000 (metro around 2,3 million). Port Stockholm is located on the meeting point of Salt Bay and Lake Malaren (the country's 3rd-largest freshwater lake - after Vanern and Vattern). The city (established in 1252) is spread across 14 islands and also on mainland Sweden (at the mouth of Lake Malaren).

Stockholm is Sweden's political, economic and cultural center. The region alone accounts for over 1/3 of the country's GDP and is one of Europe's top 10 regions by GDP per capita. In Stockholm are some of the top-ranked European universities, such as Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institute, Royal Institute of Technology. The city is also famous for hosting the annual Nobel Prize award ceremonies. One of its most prized museums - Vasa Museum (on Djurgarden Island) is Scandinavia's most visited museum. Stockholm metro (inaugurated in 1950) is famous for its stations' decorations and has been named "world's longest art gallery". The national football arena of Sweden is in the town of Solna (north of the city). The national indoor arena (Ericsson Globe) is in the city's southern part.

Here are the seat of Sweden's government, most Gov agencies, the country's Parliament, also the official residencies of Sweden's Prime Minister and monarch (Stockholm Palace is his official residence). Drottningholm Palace (UNESCO Site) in the outskirts serves as a private residence of the Swedish Royal House of Bernadotte. The best-known tourist attractions are in Gamla Stan (Old Town).

As cruise port, Stockholm in 2019 reported its record season with handled 281 ship calls (out of 287 booked), 74 turnarounds (roundtrips), and handled ~650,000 cruise tourists. To each visiting vessel is dedicated a pier coordinator responsible for all dockside logistics.

Port Stockholm

(locode SESTO) Ports of Stockholm authority also manages Port Kapellskar, Port Vartahamnen, and the new Port Norvik (completed in May 2020). The new cargo port has the capacity to handle the largest vessels (RoRo and boxships).

Port's cruising season is in the summer (late-April through early-October). As a call port, it is included in most Baltic Sea (Scandinavia and Russia) itineraries. Stockholm is served by regularly scheduled ferries to Turku and Helsinki in Finland (commonly called "Finlandsfarjan"), also to Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia ), and to St Petersburg (Russia) .

Stockholm islands are served by ferry ships run by Waxholms Angfartygs AB (aka Waxholmsbolaget) - a shipping company owned by Stockholm County Council. Waxholms Angfartygs owns all 25 vessels and is mostly tax-funded. Its services cover the entire maritime region from Arholma island (northeast) to Oja Island (south). Ferry services are year-round and used by approx 11 million passengers annually.

In February 2019, Tallink Grupp (TALLINK-SILJA LINE) started using shoreside power to provide electricity for two cruiseferries ( Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony ) operating the route Helsinki-Stockholm. Tallink's other Stockholm-homeported RoPax vessels were also scheduled to be fitted with the equipment for shore-power connections and gradually rolled out in 2020 and 2021.

In 2016, the cruise port had 230 ship visits (including 57 turnarounds) and handled ~490 000 passengers. Many passengers spend overnight (extra day and night) in the city, which benefits the local tourism industry even further. Statistics showed that cruise tourists spend around USD 58 million on city tours, hotels, restaurants, and shopping.

In 2017, the port handled 263 cruise ship calls (including 73 turnarounds) and ~600,000 cruise tourists (22% increase over 2016). The season started on April 30. During season 2017, in Stockholm were homeported 73 vessels (for roundtrip cruise departures/turnaround operations). On homeported liners, passengers often spend an extra day/night in the city, which further benefits the local tourism industry. Cruise passenger spending in Stockholm is estimated at around EUR 62 million. Maiden port calls were done by Norwegian Getaway (port's largest ship so far), MSC Fantasia and Saga Sapphire . 2017 was also reported as a record year for port's freight shipping volumes (both RoRo ships and container ships ) - a total of 9,6 million tons of cargo (7% increase over 2016's 9,01 million tons). The flow of TEU-containers between Sweden and different continents (primarily Asia) is also increasing. The number of TEUs handled by Port Stockholm increased 11% (over 2016) up to 60,000 TEUs.

In season 2018 the port handled 268 cruise ship calls (including 67 turnarounds) and ~623,000 passengers (out of Sweden's total 1,07 million), plus a maiden call at Port Kapellskar. For comparison, statistical data shows for 2014 - 264 calls (42 turnarounds, 467,000 pax) and for 2015 - 247 calls (53 turnarounds, 530,000 pax). Ferry passengers were 11+ million (out of Sweden's total ~16 million). Also increased RoRo (ferry freight) and TEU-container volumes - respectively, 7,2 million tons (+7%) and 57400 TEUs. 2018 was also a record year as port revenue - SEK 866 million (USD 95 million / EUR 83 million), the majority (30%) being from leased properties (approx 200,000 m2 and 350 tenants) .

According to a GP Wild-conducted survey, for 2018 port's annual economic contribution for the Stockholm region was EUR 176 million (port fees, ship services, cruise tourist spending on food, hotels, tours, shopping, transportation, etc), with 1100 supported jobs. The seaport was visited by 623,000 cruise passengers (plus 240,000 crew) who collectively spent EUR 57 million ashore (on food, tours, hotels, shopping, etc). In addition, the cruise companies spent EUR 25 million in-port (on harbor-pilotage-fairway dues). The survey showed that most cruise tourists were from Germany, UK and the USA. On average, day passengers spent EUR 72 pp, turnaround/roundtrip passengers - EUR 256 pp, crew - EUR 48 pp.

Port Stockholm provides to vessels all standard terminal facilities and services, among which is wastewater pumping (sewage water from onboard showers, WCs, galley). Sewage offloading is included in port fees and such facilities are available at all berths.

During 2019-Q1, the Port's container volumes increased by ~1/4 (over 2018-Q1) by handling more and larger boxships. Since May 2020, Stockholm Norvik Port has replaced the CTF (Frihamnen's container terminal). The new terminal is managed by Hutchison Ports ( Hong Kong -based global container terminal company, as of 2020 managing 52 seaports in 27 countries). The new terminal also has a RoRo (rolling cargo) section managed by Ports of Stockholm.

  • In April 2020, at Port Norvik was installed and became operational two new (China-made) Super-Post-Panamax container cranes (gantry cranes). This allows for handling the Baltic Sea's largest vessels. Each crane has a height of 81 m (266 ft) and a lifting capacity of 65 tons.
  • The first boxship (2012-built SCA Tunadal) docked at the new Stockholm Norvik Port on May 27, 2020.

For season 2020 (April 17 through October 19), the cruise port had scheduled 288 ship calls (booked berthings), including 13x for first-time visiting vessels. Maiden port calls were booked for Sky Princess and Island Princess, Le Bellot and Le Jacques Cartier (Ponant), Marella Discovery, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Jade (NCL), Mein Schiff ( TUI ), Veendam (Holand America), MSC Splendida, Azamara Pursuit, World Voyager ( Mystic Cruises ), Evrima ( Ritz-Carlton ). Note: The 3 linked ships are newbuilds (2020-launched).

Following the Coronavirus crisis, for season 2022 the cruise port had scheduled a total of 230 ship calls (booked berthings) with the largest visiting vessel being Norwegian Getaway , most calls by AIDAdiva , and most homeporting calls by the company Viking OCEAN . The Port eventually handled 205 ship calls and ~247000 passengers, including 18x maiden ship visits, 87x overnight stays, 10x 2-night stays, 5x 3-night stays.

Stockholm Frihamnen's new cruise dock "Quay F655" was officially opened on May 20th and inaugurated on June 21st, 2022. The facility occupies the site of the former container terminal (in 2020 relocated to Stockholm Norvik) and features a 330 m / 1083 ft) long dock/berth surrounded by a spacious land area specifically designed to serve more efficiently the turnaround/homeport cruise passenger traffic (checking in and checking out/debarking and embarking tourists) from buses and taxis. The Cruise Port Frihamnen project also included adding shore-power connections (in 2023), which allows the berthed ship to turn off its main engines and instead to use city-grid power for the onboard hotel operations and services.

In August 2022 was announced the plan to invest in cruise ship shoreside power facilities at the downtown-located Stadsgarden Quay (berths 167 and 160). Port Stockholm estimated that at least 45% of the cruise ship calls will use the shore-power facilities. For this project, in November 2021 was contracted PSW Group AS for the design, delivery and installation of both high-voltage shore power systems. The facilities were scheduled to be operational by August 2023 (Quay S167 /power output 8MVA) and by July 2024 (Quay S160 /power output 16MVA). Of the total investment (SEK 120M / EUR 10,6M), ~40% was covered by subsidies from the EU and Naturvardsverket (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency).

In September 2022 was announced a planned investment (Jan 2023) in a hydrogen fuelling station for vehicles at Port Norvik.

In June 2023 started regularly scheduled passenger shipping operations the world's first self-driving ferryboat.

  • The autonomous technology was developed at Trondheim's NTNU/Norwegian University of Science and Technology as part of NTNU's Autoferry project (successfully trialed in 2022).
  • MF Estelle is a catamaran-type vessel with dimensions 12x5 m (39x16 ft) and max capacity 25 passengers plus 6 bicycles. The autonomous ferry operates Stockholm's downtown route between Riddarfjarden Bay (Lake Malaren) and Sodermalm (island district). The boat is fitted with a 188-kWh battery pack (charged by 7,7-kW solar panels mounted on its roof) and is driven by an electric motor.
  • The ship's operating system utilizes radar, LiDAR-based detect and avoid system (generally used on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), infrared and machine vision cameras, ultrasonic sensors (for docking maneuvers) and GPS (for positioning).

MF Estelle (built by Torghatten ASA/ Bronnoysund , operated by Zeabuz/ Trondheim ) is now navigating autonomously between Stockholm City's islands without any human assistance.

For 2024 (April-October), Ports of Stockholm had scheduled a total of 121 cruise ship calls. Maiden/first-time berthings were booked by TUI (Mein Schiff 7) and Cunard UK (Queen Anne).

Stockholm cruise terminal

Stockholm cruise port has 5 quays. They are close to Gamla Stan or the Old Town.

Skeppsbron and Fortojning Pa Strommen are the closest to Gamla Stan. Stadsgarden is located south of Gamla Stan. Frihamnen and Vartahamnen are to north of the landmark, in the Port's commercial area.

  • Skeppsbron quay is close to the Royal Palace and serves small ships.
  • Fortojning Pa Strommen serves Holland America Line and Cunard Line.
  • Stadsgarden serves bigger cruise ships. It has a small terminal building and it is near Fotografika.
  • Frihamnen Quay is the most popular in Stockholm cruise terminal. The building is new, designed in bright colors and offering as tourist facilities a cafe restaurant, WI-FI, several eateries, tourist information, taxi parking and bus stop (in front of the building). For bus travel from the cruise terminal, take Line #76 that visit popular city sights and attractions.

Parking at the cruise port is not available.

In 2016 was improved Port Nynashamn's cruise terminal, where a new Seawalk was built and the pier was extended (current length 260 m / 853 ft) to serve smaller-sized ships instead only tenders, shuttle and tour boats.

In June 2021 Ports Stockholm started a EUR 1,5 million (~USD 1,8M) project for building a new cruise exclusive dock at Frihamnen Port (Quay F655) to double Stockholm's homeport cruise capacity. The project was completed in 2022. Quay F655's first cruise ship was Ambassador Ambience (on May 20th), while the facility's official inauguration was on June 21st (when here docked Oceania Marina ). Besides by cruise vessels, the new dock is also used for handling ships carrying project cargo. Quay F655 handled 16 ship calls in 2022 and 14 calls in 2023.

Gamla Stan: Stockholm was founded here in 1252. Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen island, located in adjacent, are a living museum with cafes, restaurants, bars, attractions, shops, and amazing sights. You can visit attractions like the Nobel Museum, the Stockholm Cathedral, and the Royal Palace with its Royal Armory.

Royal Palace: King of Sweden's official residence.

Royal national city park: take a walk in the forest surrounding the city. You can meet hares, deer, moose and foxes. There are rare bird species, insects and beautiful butterflies. Don’t miss the Ekoparken.

Stockholm city hall: the designer of the romanticism style building is Ragnar Östberg. It was inaugurated in 1923 on Midsummer Eve.

Fotografiska: contemporary photography place, one of the world’s largest. Annually there are about 4 large and 20 small exhibitions.

Cruise from Stockholm – the essential guide

Cruising from Stockholm, the capital of Sweden

Enjoy Scandinavia at its best by starting your cruise from Stockholm – the city on the Baltic, with 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges. A cruise from Stockholm, Sweden’s clean, beautiful, and friendly capital city, is the perfect starting point to see the best of Northern Europe.

We have a detailed 3-day guide to make your visit the best possible. Experience this sparkling city before or after your cruise, and combine spending time in the town itself with venturing further afield by water, taking in Stockholm’s beautiful archipelago – the Venice of the North.

Make sure this is not just a port stop but a Swedish adventure worth remembering!

Quick navigation

Stockholm – the sophisticated capital of Sweden

Stockholm offers a rich history, nordic culture, extensive parks, lakes and water sports, and international cuisine. Most locals speak fluent English, and getting around is easy by walking or using public transport.

It is one of the most friendly and global cities in the world, proud of its rich Swedish heritage, history, and traditions.

Swedes like to work hard and play hard. Five weeks of vacation per year is standard, with July being the most popular month to make the most of the long, light summer days and nights. It may be expensive, but not more so than other major cities such as London or New York.

In this article, we look at how to explore the city before starting your cruise from Stockholm with a 3-day guide including travel info, tips, and itineraries.

Immerse yourself in Swedish culture as you discover the Vasa Museum, Skansen open-air museum, the Royal Palace, and Alfred Nobel’s legacy.

Visiting Stockholm, you will discover an exciting mix of old and new. Starting in the ancient city (Gamla Stan), it is easy to find your way around (pick up a street map from your hotel concierge).

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore by local ferry so you can enjoy the archipelago and life on the surrounding islands before your cruise from Stockholm’s port.

Credit cards, money, and currency in Sweden

Transport options from stockholm arlanda airport to the city center.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a modern, well-planned airport with many shops and amenities. It’s well-signposted in Swedish and English and generally very easy to get around.

Here are the transport options from Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) to your city center hotel, which is about 40 km from the airport.

Private transfer

The fastest and most efficient way of getting to your accommodation is to book a private transfer . Your driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with your name written on a sign. This is, however, the most expensive form of transportation. Expect to pay around 1500 sek, but the price may vary depending on how many you travel together.

Airport coaches leave every 10-15 minutes and take you to Stockholms Central Station (City Terminal). These airport coaches are called Flygbussarna . A one-way ticket costs about 120 sek per person, and the journey is around 45 minutes.

Airport Express Train

The Arlanda express train , accessible from all terminals, is located under the airport and is very convenient, with a journey time of just 18 minutes.

Follow the yellow “Arlanda Express” signs at the airport. These are posted both on the walls and the floors. You can purchase tickets at the yellow ticket machines with a credit card.

One of their counters is in the baggage hall at terminal 5, and you can also ask for help at the Swedavia Arlanda Visitors Center.

The cost of a one-way adult fare is around 300 sek per person.

Taxi stands are outside of all terminals. Check the price with your driver before you depart. A one-way journey from the airport to the center of Stockholm will be roughly 400 sek.

Always get a receipt at the end of the journey. On the receipt, you will have the taxi company’s name and number, so if you forget something in the taxi, you can call them.

If you are more than four passengers sharing, speak to the taxi official who can help you get a larger vehicle.

Where to stay in Stockholm

Stockholm has many great hotels for all budgets and types of travelers. For cruise travelers, we have chosen our favorites. These include popular hotels we have previously booked for cruise customers and personal favorites we use in the city.

We recommend that you book a hotel that is at least 4-star. This way, you will get a good standard of room, convenient amenities, and good concierge service, such as help with booking taxis, advice on local transport, city maps, and even making reservations for you. Here are our choices:

Clarion Hotel Amaranten

You will love this hotel and its location in Kungsholmen. Kungsholmen is an island, a green neighborhood with parks, fantastic residences, and waterside promenades.

You are within walking distance of almost everything in the city. It’s about a 10-minute walk to City Hall and the Central Station. The old town (Gamla Stan) is a 20-minute walk.

There are rooms suitable for families traveling with kids or teenagers with plenty of space. Rooms are typical of the Scandinavian style – hardwood floors, neutral colors, and modern bathrooms. It’s a great choice and good value for money.

Breakfast is outstanding. Everything you would want from a Scandinavian breakfast buffet, including plenty of healthy options and those with food allergies. You may wish to allow extra time in the morning to enjoy it!

You can check in from 3 pm. The hotel can store your luggage if you cannot access your room immediately upon early arrival. Wifi is accessible in all parts of the hotel, and you may want to note that this hotel is entirely cash-free, so credit cards are a must. This applies to many hotels all over Sweden.

First Hotel Kungsbron

This super convenient hotel is located very close to Stockholms Central Station.

First Hotels is a brand unique to Scandinavia. The group has 33 hotels throughout Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. This particular First hotel in Kungsbron, Stockholm, is one of 6 in Sweden.

This hotel is typically Scandinavian, clear, bright, and modern, with a great breakfast buffet and comfy beds.

To get there is an easy walk from Stockholms central station, ideal when arriving by the airport’s direct train, the Arlanda Express.

We recommend that you join the membership program before booking. By joining the First Member Loyalty Program, you will immediately qualify for discounts when booking with the hotel.

Grand Hôtel Stockholm

For a first-class stay at a prestigious hotel with an award-winning restaurant, look no further than the Grand Hôtel Stockholm.

If your budget allows and you want to start your cruising vacation in extra style with a fantastic living experience, book The Flag Suite. You will be at the very top of the hotel. There is a glass tower lookout and a private terrace. You are overlooking the water and have a view of the Royal Palace. It’s a magical view in the evenings.

As I said, this is first-class accommodation in a classic style by a Swedish interior designer. You will not find a better hotel in Stockholm.

If you do not want to pay the price tag which inevitably goes with this type of accommodation, try one of the hotel’s restaurants or bars during your stay instead. They are iconic in Stockholm.

Or if it’s just coffee and a sandwich you want, you can enjoy at the hotel’s Grand Café on the quayside, right in front of the hotel. Take a walk through the lobby while visiting, and you’ll enjoy Scandinavian design inspired by a bygone era.

Best Western Signature Collection

This Best Western hotel is located in the heart of Stockholm’s old medieval town, Gamla Stan .

This quaint, historic, and utterly fantastic district is home to Swedish Royalty and the Swedish Parliament, quirky shopping, and cosy inns and restaurants.

Many streets are cobblestones, so wear good walking shoes! The Best Western Signature Collection offers value-for-money family accommodation in a top-notch location; breakfast is often included in the price.

Scandic Gamla Stan

What we love about the Scandic hotel is its roof-top terrace with fantastic views over the city. The Royal Palace is just a 5-minute walk away. With views all around, it’s the perfect place for a sunset drink.

Expect all the modern Scandinavian facilities you want from a 4-star hotel. Scandic is the largest hotel operator in the Nordic region. Breakfast is excellent and always includes vegan alternatives and allergy-friendly dishes.

3 days in the city before your cruise from Stockholm

Our suggestions offer the best ways to spend three days in this stunning city.

Day 1: City Hall and Gamla Stan, the heart of Stockholm

City Hall is a great place to start your first day in Stockholm. Especially if you have chosen to stay in Kungsholmen as City Hall is located here.

City Hall is easily identified by the three golden crowns adorning the roof. Famous worldwide for hosting the Nobel Prize Banquet, there are two main ceremonial halls to see.

Step first into the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is annually held, then into the stunning Golden Hall.

We highly recommend you join a short guided tour. The guides are excellent and can explain the meaning of the Queen of Lake Mälaren image on the wall and its fascinating history.

From City Hall, walk across the bridge, Stadshusbron, into Gamla Stan, the Old Town.

Gamla Stan – The Old Town

Stockholm’s magical, compact part is home to buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Cozy cobbled streets meander into bustling squares of coffee houses and unique and quirky boutiques.

You’ll find everything from stylish restaurants to small pubs and trendy cocktail bars.

Head over to the Royal Palace . First of all, if you are lucky, you may see the regimental ceremony of the Changing of the Guard. Inside the Baroque-style Palace, you can join a tour of some of the 600 rooms that are open to the public. Check the opening hours on their website.

A short walk from the palace, you are at Storkyrkan, where you can see the famous carved medieval statue of St George and the Dragon, dating from 1489. And right next door, you are in Stortorget, the largest square in Gamla Stan.

Stop for a coffee break here. The Swedes take their “Fika” quite seriously – the art of drinking coffee and eating a sweet bake or open sandwich mid-morning. It’s a charming tradition, a chance to sit and chat with friends or take some time to yourself mid-morning.

In Stortorget, you will be spoilt for choice with the surrounding cosy coffee houses. We like Kaffekoppen . Try their traditional cinnamon buns!

The stunning, columned pale pink building in Stortorget is home to the Nobel Prize Museum. This is one of two must-do museums if you visit the city for only a few days.

Learn about the fairytale Nobel Gala, the history of Alfred Nobel, and the Nobel Prize recipients. An excellent activity for kids is called “Bubble Chamber,” which they’ll love.

Head across Strömbron towards Kungsträdgården (The King’s Garden) for a good lunch. This is a great place to relax or grab lunch at one of the many nearby eateries.

Gamla Stan’s most famous shopping streets are Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan, where you can easily spend the afternoon exploring. Discover even Prästgatan-  a more charming medieval street is hard to find.

Stay on Prästgatan for dinner. Try the restaurant Kryp In. Or, if you feel like eating Italian, opt for Portofino restaurant on Stora Nygatan instead.

Day 2: Djurgården and Stockholm Harbour

By your second day, you may have discovered the hop-on, hop-off buses that get you around most sights and parts of Stockholm. If you have bought a ticket, this bus is a great way to get to Djurgården.

Otherwise, from Gamla Stan, it’s just a 9-minute ferry ride on the Djurgården ferry. And it is worth taking the boat. You will get your first glimpse of what must be one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world.

The green island of Djurgården, just to the southeast of Gamla Stan, is a great day out for the whole family.

Just over Djurgårds Bridge, there is a visitor’s office where you can pick up a map of the island. And right next door is Sjöcafeet, a small eatery where you can rent bicycles to explore the island.

But just a 5-minute walk from the entrance is your first stop. Famous for what is possibly one of the best museums in Sweden, you will love The Vasa Museum.

Vasa, Sweden’s greatest historical warship

The Vasa warship, which sank in Stockholms Harbor in 1628, was triumphantly raised from the harbor bed in 1961 and carefully preserved. It’s a fantastic example of a warship and a must-see in Stockholm. The story of the ship, its extraordinary relics, and the people’s history is expertly told and depicted in the surrounding displays.

For the ABBA fans

If you love ABBA music and Mamma Mia, visiting the ABBA Museum is just a 10-minute walk away.

Packed full of original costumes and instruments, the museum tells the story of the rise to fame of ABBA and the resulting musical Mamma Mia.

Swedish history comes to life

If you visit with children, they will love the open-air museum Skansen. History comes to life as you see the 150 historical buildings of houses, stores, and shops.

All the staff is dressed in historical costumes, and you can see handicrafts being made and animals unique to the Swedish landscape.

At the end of the afternoon, leave Djurgården and go to Östermalms Saluhall. This outstanding food court, located in a beautiful historical building from 1888, has won countless accolades and is worth a visit, most of all for the fantastic seafood.

Remember to check opening times; they vary depending on the day of the week you visit.

On your way back to your hotel, stroll through the leafy promenade of Strandvägen, where you’ll find luxury villas and apartments in perfectly preserved historical buildings.

Day 3: Drottningholms Slott (Drottningholms Palace)

Visit Stockholm in the summer, and you will experience perfect summer days and long, light evenings. You may be surprised that Stockholm can be very hot in the high season and crowded with long queues.

If you visit in high season, we strongly advise starting early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds but also consider traveling as much as possible by ferry.

The Drottningholm Palace, Drottningholms Slott,  is the primary residence of the Swedish Royal Family. Built in 1600 and on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, it is located on the island of Lovön, west of the city.

The best way to visit this fabulous castle is by ferry. You can cruise through Lake Mälaren and see Stockholm from the water. The journey is about 1 hour.

There is no guarantee that you will get a seat on the ferry if you turn up at the departure pier, so we recommend you book tickets in advance. Viator offers reasonable prices.

Alternatively, regular boat services during the summer depart from Stadshuskajen (the City Hall Quay) and are offered by Strömma Kanalbolaget.

Once at the castle, don’t forget to explore the grounds, the gardens, and the Chinese Pavilion.

How to get to Stockholm Port for your Cruise from Stockholm

The most common passenger terminal used by the major cruise lines in Stockholm is the Stockholm Frihamnen Cruise Terminal, located about 6km northeast of the city center.

Check your cruise ticket for the exact location of your cruise line’s port, as several different ones are used.

To reach your cruise terminal from your central hotel, you have the following options:

  • Taxi: The average cost of a taxi is about 200 sek. The journey takes about 30 minutes depending upon traffic and roadworks. Your hotel can help you book a cab to the port. Book this in advance when you first check-in. Show your driver the number of the port terminal you need to reach (this information is on your cruise ticket). And the name of your cruise line so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
  • Private Transfer: If you are four people or more, you may pre-book a private transfer before leaving home. You can share the cost as this is the most expensive way to get from Stockholm city center to the port. Inform your driver which port terminal your ship leaves from (this information is on your cruise ticket). And give them the name of your cruise line so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
  • Bus: Some buses go from the center of Stockholm to the port. The journey time is about 40 minutes. This is our least favored option as the buses can get crowded and stop frequently. Plus, you have your cruise luggage to handle too.

Which cruise lines offer cruises from Stockholm?

All major cruise lines such as Viking Line, Silversea, NCL, Royal Caribbean, and MSC cruises offer fantastic itineraries for Norther Europe when you book your cruise from Stockholm.

Cruise in the summer and enjoy long, light days and evenings and the best of the Scandinavian weather, when there are many exciting outdoor activities, to fill your time in Stockholm and other European ports with unforgettable memories of this beautiful part of the world.

Community rides along Williamson Road for a “Cruise In”

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - In Roanoke, a lot of cars were on Williamson Road on Friday for the annual Cruise-In.

You may remember Star City Motor Madness announced the canceling of the event due to safety concerns.

“I’m a car guy and cars are what I do and what I think about most is building cars in my head,” said Jack. “It’s a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle, about about 18 years ago, for $150.”

“The blue is really good. And it’s like really low, right? And I love this type of car,” said one teenager looking at the Volkswagen Beetle.

“Cars are like people. They’re all different. We all have a different opinion. But in a car culture, it’s kind of amazing that there could be a million different people with a million different cars, and we all have a different opinion about what we should do or what we should do to a car. But we all get along. It’s a community. We’re not fighting,” said Jack.

“I think it’s a great event,” said Jim. “It’s a great night for [Cruise in] and we just need more people with common sense and not acting silly and just enjoy your time together.”

Tom Cruise Continues His Summer of Concerts With Glastonbury Stop

x cruise stockholm

By Eve Batey

Tom Cruise Gillian Anderson and Simon Pegg

People never really talk about Tom Cruise 's brow-raising role in Rock of Ages , Adam Shankman ’s 2012 adaptation of the Broadway musical that mission-improbably cast Cruise as a hair band frontman named Stacee Jaxx. If you wondered what it might be like to hear the star of Mission Impossible straight-facedly belt out Pour Some Sugar on Me and Paradise City , get thee to the streaming platform of your choice.

But if you always wanted to hear him sing along with Oasis, you had to be in the VIP section at this weekend's Glastonbury Festival, where you'd find Tom Cruise alongside film sidekick Simon Pegg , MI director Christopher McQuarrie , and The Crown 's Margaret Thatcher stand-in, actor Gillian Anderson .

Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, Gillian Anderson, and Simon Pegg ahead of Coldplay performing during day four of Glastonbury Festival 2024 at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 29, 2024 in Glastonbury, England.

The trio were there to catch Coldplay, the headliner of Saturday's day of acts . Cruise, Pegg, and Anderson reportedly cooled their heels as they waited for the show to begin, even joining the crowd in a sing-along set to Oasis's “Don't Look Back on Anger,” posts to social media show.

Cruise's performance from the VIP perch was relatively restrained compared to his work as Jaxx: according to an interview from 2012 , Cruise insisted that his character be joined onscreen by a baboon.

Jaxx was “totally outrageous but yet I wanted to play it straight and have these different moments that evolve,” Cruise said, explaining the addition of a monkey to the cast. "Adam [Shankman] kept going, ‘Look, do we need the monkey?’ And I kept saying, ‘I really need the monkey. And then he came at me with the baboon.”

Is Cruise feeling nostalgic for those rock star days? Perhaps, as this is his second concert weekend in a row. Just last week, the actor was in a VIP tent at Wembley Stadium , dancing and singing along to Taylor Swift during a London stop on her Eras Tour. Alongside VIPers including Hugh Grant , Travis Kelce (one night before his landmark performance ), and Greta Gerwig , Cruise reportedly joined in as Swift performed “Shake It Off.”

Cruise's tentmates were in for a show, if a 2012 interview with Rock of Ages co-star Malin Akerman is any indication. “He’s just superman,” she said then. “He can do everything, and he has an absolutely brilliant voice.”

According to Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott , who visited the Rock of Ages set for some of Cruise's scenes, the action star “did a fantastic job” when he performed Pour Some Sugar on Me , a 1987 hit for the band.

And according to Elliott, Cruise had nothing but respect for the real-life musicians he was attempting to channel. “Look, I just want you guys to know, I’m doing this with the most integrity as possible," Elliott says Cruise told him. "I’m not poking fun. I’m doing this to honor you guys.”

Banksy’s Protest Art, a Brat Bash, and the Return of Paul Mescal’s Tiny Shorts: All the Glastonbury 2024 Highlights

By Kerry McDermott

As per British tradition, more than 200,000 people—A-listers among them—have decamped to a dairy farm in Pilton, Somerset, for Glastonbury, headlined this year by Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA. Catch up on this year’s highlights here.

Little Simz announced herself as a future headliner

The London rapper and former British Vogue cover star played the Pyramid Stage before headliners Coldplay (and later joined them onstage to debut a new track, “We Pray”), but it’s surely just a matter of time before Simz is topping the bill herself. With little in the way of bells and whistles (no choreo here), the star held the Glastonbury crowd transfixed for the duration of her set. “I need you to understand that you are witnessing greatness,” she said on stage. “And I don’t say that with arrogance; I say that with confidence.” Nobody is arguing with her—least of all the music press .

Michael J. Fox made the ultimate guest cameo

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Perhaps the highlight of Coldplay’s undeniably epic set on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night? An appearance from special guest Michael J. Fox, who joined the band to play guitar on “Fix You.” The 63-year-old star of Back to the Future , who has been battling Parkinson’s disease for more than 30 years, is key to the band’s origin story, according to frontman Chris Martin, who was inspired by watching Fox’s rendition of “Johnny B Goode” in the classic 1985 film. “Thank you so much, our hero,” Martin said on stage. Even the most committed Coldplay haters couldn’t fail to be moved.

Dua Lipa scheduled in some post-Pyramid down-time

Callum Turner with Dua Lipa, wearing an Ann Demeulemeester leather skirt and The Attico boots, the day after she headlined the Pyramid Stage.

What to do after you’ve smashed the Friday night headline slot on the Pyramid Stage, clad in a “ sexy, strong, cool ” wardrobe of Loewe and Versace? If you’re Dua Lipa, you find boyfriend Callum Turner, spark up a cig, and set about enjoying the rest of the greatest festival on earth as a spectator. She was spied strolling around the VIP area with her beau the day after her barnstorming performance—wearing Ann Demeulemeester, no less.

Paul Mescal packed his micro-shorts

After exposing maximum upper thigh on the front row at Gucci, Paul Mescal brought his signature skimpy shorts to Glastonbury. The star was snapped by his sister Nell Mescal , beaming in a pair of Adidas three-stripe shorts, a baseball cap, and a band tee.

Paul was far from the only Irish A-lister on site. As well as Daisy Edgar-Jones, Mescal’s festival crew included his compatriots (and former co-stars) Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Scott. Ronan was later spied belting out “Paradise” from her boyfriend Jack Lowden ’s shoulders during Coldplay’s Saturday night set.

The crowdsurfing was a work of art

Five years after Banksy made Stormzy a stab-proof vest for his stunning headline set on the Pyramid Stage, the guerrilla artist and activist put his always-potent stamp on the 2024 festival, launching an inflatable dinghy filled with dummies dressed as migrants into the crowd during Idles’ Saturday night set. The timing was carefully chosen: not only is the UK days out from an election in which immigration will be a key issue, but the life raft also appeared as the band played “Danny Nedelko,” a track that celebrates diversity and takes aim at the insidious rise of nationalism.

Palestine was a persistent theme

Image may contain Damon Albarn Electronics Speaker Clothing Hat Accessories Glasses Adult and Person

Damon Albarn addressed Palestine—and the importance of voting—when he joined Bombay Bicycle Club on stage in a surprise appearance.

Amongst the usual peace signs and Pride banners, it was impossible to miss the Palestinian flags fluttering in the skies over Worthy Farm this year. Nine months into Israel’s military onslaught in Gaza, several acts felt compelled to make their feelings clear—some more directly than others. There was much to-ing and fro-ing on Twitter over whether Dua (who has publicly called for a ceasefire) did or didn’t deliberately position herself close to a Palestinian flag during her set in order to get it on camera, while Coldplay invited the Chilean-Palestinian singer Elyanna to join them on stage, along with Femi Kuti, for a rendition of their track “Arabesque.” The Irish band Lankum, meanwhile, sang “The Rocks of Palestine” on the Park Stage on Saturday afternoon, a reworking of the traditional folk song “The Rocks of Bawn,” with lyrics acknowledging the suffering in Gaza.

Charli XCX brought the Brat mood to Levels

Not sure if you’ve heard but… it’s a brat-girl summer . The mood’s progenitor, Charli XCX, duly pitched up to DJ at Levels in one of the most talked-about sets of the weekend. She even brought out Robyn herself when she played “ With Every Heartbeat .” The only downside? It took place at 12:30 a.m. on a non-televised stage, so you can’t watch it back—which, let’s face it, is quite brat.

A Tom Cruise performance was not on the bill… but it did happen

From Tay Tay to Coldplay: Tom Cruise with Gillian Anderson and Simon Pegg at Glastonbury.

Just a week after he was seen looking radiantly happy, if somewhat confused, at Taylor Swift’s Wembley gig, Tom Cruise’s musical tour of the UK continued at the festival, where he was filmed launching into a rendition of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” with Simon Pegg and Gillian Anderson. Only at Glasto…
