  • Trivia When Trevor opens the box of stuff belonging to his lost brother, he pulls out an odd wooden item, says he doesn't know what it is, and sets it aside. The item is a Holmes Stereoscope, designed in 1861 by Oliver Wendell Holmes to look at stereocards. Similar to postcards, they show a left-view and right-view photograph mounted next to each other. When viewed through a stereoscope, the photographs merge into one 3-D image. The Holmes Stereoscope was a great source of entertainment in the Victorian era. The same process was later adopted for ViewMaster viewers and cards.
  • Goofs (at around 1h 18 mins) When Trevor tries to ignite the magnesium with a flare, he claims that it's "...too wet...". Magnesium burns in water, producing magnesium oxide and hydrogen - in fact, pouring water on burning magnesium intensifies the fire; the most effective way to douse a magnesium fire is to cover it with sand or dry dirt.

The Mountain

Themountain

The Mountain can be seen looming in the background for most of the journey.

The Mountain is the Traveler 's unspoken, ultimate goal. It is extremely massive, large enough to take up a great portion of the sky from miles away, and has a distinct "cut" on the top where light shines through. The Mountain can be seen in every level, with the exceptions of the Underground Passage (underground) and the Temple (in a building). For unknown reasons, the Traveler seeks to reach the top of the Mountain to such an extent that they would brave extreme climates and hostile creatures to get there.

Little is known of the Mountain's history or its relation to the beings in the Traveler's visions. The temperature on its slopes is below freezing and the weather is stormy for most of the ascent until the Traveler passes over the stormclouds and finds an oasis-like environment leading to the top. Although only a few frozen cloth creatures live on the slopes, the Mountain houses many cloth creatures- an entire cloth ecosystem- near its summit.

Local businesses supporting family of shark attack survivor

by Olivia Gauthier

(WBMA)

As mountain brook teenager Lulu Gribbon continues to recover from a shark attack, her hometown is rallying around her.

3 simple words said by 15-year-old Lulu Gibbon after overcoming an unimaginable situation

Since then, it's become a statement of hope and a testament of her strength.

While progressing, lulu's recovery journey is far from over.

To help Lulu and her family prepare, local business owners like Suzanne Jones, did not hesitate to support the Gribbon family when approached by a family friend.

"Lulu's moms best friend, said she wanted to make something special for the family... and she wanted it to say 'I made it' because those we're lulu's first words," said Jones.

Dozens of bag's can be seen in the store, packaged and ready to go, customers steadily flowing in the show their support.

Jones say's they have restocked several times to keep up with demand and so far have sold over 500 bracelets nationwide

And they aren't only one struggling to keep up with the outpour of support for the Gribbons.

Bandwagon sports in Edgewood says they've sold over 2,200 shirts so far, and are making more items like hoodies available for purchase.

"Its really been remarkable to see the community come together," said Leah Knight, owner of Bandwagon sports.

Many local businesses and residents have shown their support by putting purple ribbons in their windows,

It is a testament to the importance of community, and how something seemingly simple, can have a big impact

"I never would have thought that we would be able to do something to actually help people, so to be able to use the simple resource of a t-shirt to bring support, awareness, love to this family-- as well as as monetary support, it's really humbling," said Knight.

Suzanne Jones of Holland and Birch says she recently spoke with a close relative of the Gribbons, and they are feeling the support of the community.

"They're just very grateful for all the support," said Jones.

Proceeds from the bracelets, t-shirts will be going to the Gribbon family.

You can purchase Bracelets here .

You can purchase T-shirts here.

In addition to Holland and Birch, and Bandwagon Sports, Smiths Variety is selling purple ribbons for Lulu, all net proceeds go directly to the Caring for Lulu fund established by close friends of the Gribbon family.

Bows will be available for as long as people request them.

Due to demand, there may only be a handful left in store.

To purchase, they ask to visit or call.

Georgia’s Mountain View Campground: Relax and Savor the Sights

Table of Contents

A scenic view from Mountain View Campground.

RV parks come in all shapes and sizes and everyone has their own preferences for what makes a “perfect” campground. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better spot than Mountain View Campground in Hiawassee, Georgia. Not only does this park have a near-perfect rating from guests, but it has also won multiple camper’s choice awards.

With all these accolades, you might expect to find a huge park that’s always crowded and busy. But on the contrary, this is a small, quiet campground with gorgeous scenery and truly warm-hearted managers. You couldn’t ask for a better place to spend a few nights.

If you plan to visit Georgia, Mountain View Campground could be the ideal place to set up your home base. Read on to learn exactly why this campground has earned its place among the best of the best.

Mountain View Campground is located at 4157 Swallows Creek Road in Hiawassee. It’s nestled in between Swallow Creek and Hightower Creek, so you’ll never be far away from these lovely flowing rivers. These streams connect with the massive Chatuge Lake, which has 132 miles of shoreline. If you need a private lakeside beach, you’re bound to find a great spot somewhere along this stretch.

Many people travel to this area to enjoy the lake, but Mountain View Campground is on the outskirts so you’ll be safe from the crowds. But you’re still in position to enjoy the water, plus the benefits of the surrounding forest. This campground is quite small, with only 28 sites available. But this gives the park a quiet and cozy environment.

Full hookups are provided at each site, plus visitors can choose a site with 20/30/50 amp service depending on their needs. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the park as well, so you’ll be able to stay connected if you need to.

Although Georgia is a fairly warm state, the winters get pretty cold. That’s why Mountain View Campground is only open seasonally. Visitors can camp between May 1 and November 4, so you’ve got plenty of time to stop by before the snow shuts everything down.

The nightly rates here are also a major bonus. When you heard the words, “award-winning campground” you probably pictured a luxury resort that costs hundreds of dollars per night. On the contrary, you can camp here for as little as $45, making it one of the more budget-friendly RV parks in the country. Discounts are also available for military service members , certain camping clubs, and returning visitors.

Because this is a small park, it’s a good idea to book your campsite in advance. Visit mountainview-camp.com to reserve a spot today.

journey of mountain

Although this is not a resort-style park, it still has all the amenities to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable. Families with children can have plenty of fun here, but the quiet atmosphere may be better-suited for adults. Most pets are welcome, and there’s a dog park where they can use up their extra energy.

In addition to the full hookups, each site has a picnic table and a fire pit so you can enjoy a pleasant outdoor space. Guests are also welcome to visit the on-site bath house and restrooms to stay fresh during their visit. Laundry facilities are provided as well.

If you’re looking for a peaceful outdoor retreat, try the covered pavilion. This is equipped with patio heaters to keep you warm at night, and it has plenty of seating. There is also a community fire pit and a propane grill that anyone can use. It’s easy to enjoy outdoor cooking when you stay here.

There are also indoor activities available in the Gathering Room. This rustic building includes comfortable seating, a ping pong table, and a dedicated puzzle area. It’s a great place to retreat to when the weather gets hot.

This campground also hosts events and live music performances for guests to enjoy. The Music Barn is the hotspot for visiting bands throughout the season. Every Saturday includes karaoke, open mic opportunities, and music trivia (complete with prizes). Potlucks happen fairly often as well, so bring the ingredients for your favorite party dish! There’s a wonderful sense of community in this park and it can be a great place to make new friends.

But one of the greatest amenities is the view. This park is appropriately named “Mountain View Campground” because it gives you a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The hills are covered in trees that change with the seasons, so this park it beautiful all year long. It’s nestled in the heart of the forest so there is plenty of shade and greenery to enjoy.

Nearby Activities/Attractions

journey of mountain

Many people flock to Hiawassee thanks to the rolling hills, beautiful lakes, and leafy forests. There is a lot to enjoy in this area, especially for nature-lovers. Chatuge Lake is one of the biggest destinations, thanks to its winding shoreline and gorgeous views. It has even earned the nickname “Jewel of the Mountains.” During your visit, you will find plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, or just wandering along the beaches.

Mountain View Campground also puts you close to a variety of smaller rivers and streams. In these flowing waters, you can enjoy white-water rafting, canoeing, inner tube floating, and more.

But water isn’t the only thing to enjoy in this area. If you love hiking, biking, and exploring nature trails, you’re in luck. There are several popular trails around Hiawassee and you can spend days trekking through the green woods. Some hikes (like Brasstown Bald) are only 1/2 mile, while the nearby Appalachian Trail spans for thousands of miles! Part of it cuts through Georgia, so you can hop onto this historic trail for as long as you’d like.

There are also several state parks and scenic waterfalls to enjoy. The great outdoors are right at your doorstep and there are so many ways to take it all in.

The local town also has some interesting features that are worth a look. Try visiting one of the nearby vineyards/wineries or stroll through the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens. Kids of all ages will love the Marine Station Water Park, while adults might enjoy a trip to the charming Hiawassee Fruit & Vegetable Market.

International Yoga Day 2024: Are you a beginner? Try these 5 asanas to begin your yoga journey

International day of yoga 2024: if you are looking to kickstart your yoga journey, here are 5 asanas or exercises that you should try as a beginner.

International Yoga Day or International Day of Yoga is celebrated on June 21 on a global scale annually because Yoga is renowned for enhancing strength and many poses engage various muscle groups, helping you build both physical and mental resilience . This newfound strength extends beyond the Yoga mat, positively impacting your daily life and activities.

Yoga offers a myriad of benefits for beginners embarking on their wellness journey and it promotes flexibility by gently stretching your muscles, gradually increasing your range of motion. This can be particularly beneficial for those who spend long hours sitting at a desk or engaging in activities that limit movement.

Benefits of Yoga

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Founder of Akshar Yoga Kendraa, shared, “For beginners seeking stress relief, yoga provides a valuable tool. Through mindful breathing and the focus required in each pose, you can cultivate a sense of calm and mental clarity. This meditative aspect of yoga not only reduces stress but also improves your overall mental well-being. Balance is another key benefit of yoga. As you move through different poses, you refine your balance and coordination. This is especially beneficial as we age, helping prevent falls and injuries by improving stability.”

He suggested to practice these five beginner-friendly Yoga poses to kickstart your journey -

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana):

Tadasana or Mountain Pose(Twitter/drvaaash)

Stand tall with your feet together, grounding through all four corners. Reach your arms overhead with palms facing each other. This simple yet powerful pose improves posture and awareness of your body's alignment.

2. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana):

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Grand Master Akshar)

Begin on your hands and knees, then lift your hips toward the ceiling, forming an inverted V-shape. This pose stretches and strengthens the entire body, particularly the shoulders, hamstrings, and calves.

3. Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I):

Step one foot back, keeping the front knee bent and aligned over the ankle. Extend your arms overhead with palms facing each other. Warrior I builds strength in the legs and core while opening the chest and shoulders.

4. Child's Pose (Balasana):

Balasana or Child's Pose or Child's Resting Pose of Yoga(Instagram/mindfulbyminna)

Kneel on the mat, sit back on your heels, and extend your arms in front of you. This restorative pose provides a gentle stretch for the back, hips, and thighs, promoting relaxation and stress relief.

5. Corpse Pose (Savasana):

Savasana (Shutterstock )

Lie on your back, arms at your sides, palms facing up. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Savasana is the ultimate relaxation pose, allowing your body to absorb the benefits of your practice and promoting a deep sense of tranquility.

Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar concluded, “The benefits of Yoga for beginners extend far beyond the physical realm. Whether you're looking to improve flexibility, build strength, reduce stress, enhance balance or simply embark on a holistic wellness journey, Yoga has something to offer. Incorporating these five poses into your routine is a great starting point for reaping the rewards of this ancient practice.”

PA teacher aims to climb '67 Trees on 67 Mountains in 67 Counties' for forestry awareness

by Cate Hynes

thumb_63074.png

BEDFORD CO., Pa (WHP) — Danville Area High School agriculture teacher and forester Van Wagner is on the climbing journey of a lifetime.

Since January 2023, Wagner has been advancing his conservation project, "67 Trees on 67 Mountains in 67 Counties." Over the next few years, he hopes to climb to the tallest point in every Pennsylvania county in an effort to raise awareness about PA forests.

On Tuesday, Wagner was joined by Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and a number of local lawmakers for a hike at Blue Knob State Park in Bedford County. During the hike, Wagner climbed the tallest tree in the park, the 46th climb of his '67 Trees on 67 Mountains in 67 Counties' project.

While speaking to local lawmakers, Wagner expressed his love for Pennsylvania's ecosystem, and the many ways forests help the state. He went on to say, "We need to be aware that our forest is fragile. I want all Pennsylvanians to be part of that conversation. How do we go forward with managing our forests? "

Representatives from the Hardwoods Development Council, Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, and PA Office of Outdoor Recreation all spoke about how the investments of the Shapiro Administration in agriculture and recreation plan to boost Pennsylvania's economy while protecting local forests.

"The value of our forests extends far beyond the $39 billion our hardwoods industry feeds into our economy every year," Secretary Redding said. "Parks like Blue Knob serve as crucial hubs for tourism and recreation, offering opportunities to recharge physically and connect with nature and family. These valuable resources won't be around in the future just because we like them. The Shapiro Administration is investing in the forest management practices that ensure that the forests, and the jobs and families who rely on them will be here in the future."

At the end of the event, Secretary Redding even geared up with Wagner to scale the Pennsylvania Red Oak Tree together.

Why An LA Artist 'Adopted' The Topanga Canyon Landslide

A woman sits on top of a large mound of dirt and boulders.

Time makes you boulder

Climb a mountain and turn around, bring it down.

In early June, Topanga Canyon’s main coastal route reopened three months ahead of schedule after a massive spring landslide.

While the California Department of Transportation trucked the debris to sites in Malibu and Port Hueneme, a chunk of the hillside made an unlikely journey to downtown Los Angeles, where it will revitalize a historic park and join a living art and environmental experiment.

The project is the latest endeavor of environmental artist Lauren Bon’s effort to create a “new normal” where creatives and government agencies collaborate to solve big problems around how we manage natural resources.

“What if disturbances in ecology create abundance?” Bon said. “What if we were to retrieve this material instead of discard it?”

The hillside above Topanga Canyon Boulevard crashed onto the roadway on March 9 amid heavy rain .

The landslide created a lengthy detour for San Fernando Valley commuters, hampered local businesses , and blocked a critical evacuation route as fire season approached.

In April, Caltrans quantified the scale of the landslide as enough to fill 5,500 dump trucks.

Though that estimate was later revised downward, “A window in my thinking of being annoyed and frightened about the imposition of the landslide kind of opened up,” said Bon, a longtime Topanga Canyon resident. Bon is the daughter of philanthropist Wallis Annenberg and Metabolic Studio is an extension of the family’s foundation .

Bon and the team at Metabolic Studio collaborated with government agencies, engineers, and others to test the soil and secure the necessary permissions to transport and store the materials.

Two trucks are seen along a dirt road below a cliff showing sings of mud and debris flowing off of it. Power lines are beside the road with a small crane perched along the hillside digging sand. Trees are seen on the same hillside below a blue sky.

“Seeing multiple different agencies be able to very quickly come together and make something happen was very impressive and really heartening,” said Metabolic Studio project manager Kelly Majewski.

Clean soil is a valuable construction resource, but the team needed to secure space for the material in mere weeks.

“It seemed really exciting,” said California State Parks Los Angeles District Superintendent Richard Fink II. “Kind of like a full circle opportunity because we could take the soils from the Santa Monica Mountains and the Topanga State Park area and potentially reuse them here in Los Angeles.”

The park’s 50 truckloads of soil is destined for four acres of the sprawling Los Angeles State Historic Park that remain undeveloped.

  • At the L.A. River Farmer’s Market : Thursdays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., 1245 N. Spring St. at the L.A. State Historic Park.
  • Volunteer : Join the studio’s Farmlab team in tending the land on Tuesdays, times vary.
  • Watch: View a livestream of the “Moving Mountains” sites.
  • Ongoing workshops : Opportunities to work with clay, discuss science, and more.

“It's been basically cleared, remediated, and it's been left as an open palette for our next phase,” Fink said.

The parks system is exploring a collaboration with Metabolic Studios as the land is developed. Bon’s 2005 project “Not A Cornfield” cultivated millions of ears of the eponymous vegetable on the land that’s now the park.

A black-and-white image of a woman standing on a hillside overlooking a valley.

The remaining 100 truckloads of slip went to Bon’s Metabolic Studio . She described the acquisition of the landslide as an adoption.

“It's not like we're just placing a…dispossessed landscape from a slid mountain to someplace else,” Bon said. “We're now taking care of it.”

Part of the landslide resides at “ The Moon, ” a truck-yard-turned-environmental-experimentation lab on Pasadena Avenue along the L.A. River.

A combination of shady cloth covers and mist machines will help one mound feel like it’s in its coastal birthplace. Another pile is mixed with matter from the L.A. River’s floodplain, and the largest mass has been compressed into a boulder-strewn mini-mountain.

Small green heart-shaped leaves grow from rocky soil.

The project seeks to answer many questions, including, “Can we keep that soil healthy and well long enough for the next generation to do the greatest good for the greatest number of living systems in the shortest amount of time?”

One idea is to layer the landslide soil atop unpaved land along the L.A. River to create new ecosystems where the ground was once smothered in concrete.

  • Address : 1245 N Spring St. Los Angeles, CA 90012
  • Hours : 8 a.m. to sunset.
  • Online : Website | Instagram
  • Activities : Biking, walking, picnicking, kite-flying, bird-watching and special events .

“Moving Mountains” builds on Bon’s effort to reconnect the L.A. River to the floodplain .

Bon obtained more than 75 permits from varying agencies to gain permission to draw water from the river. The ongoing project seeks to funnel the water in L.A. State Historic Park for irrigation.

Bon acknowledged it would be easier to create art that fits within the walls of a gallery.

“If you just work within a social organization that's very similar to you where you feel accepted, you may not allow the work to reach the largest capacity it has to do work in the world,” Bon said. “I want to be doing work that has applications on a larger scale than I can realize on my own. I want to see systemic changes happen.”
