About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy. You are not required to obtain a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact a consulate or embassy of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $449  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the mini coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally,  please contact a embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in reasonably good health. Our journeys are active adventures which may include considerable walking on uneven terrain, involve stairs and steep inclines, touring at high elevations and visiting remote areas in newly developing ecotourism destinations, frequently in warm weather. It is important that you have sturdy, comfortable and worn-in walking shoes. Hiking boots are recommended for the hiking portions of this tour. We will also be bicycling, so sneakers, shorts, backpacks and hats may be of use.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

This is an area where the climate is temperate and unpredictable. As a general rule, you can expect temperatures to range from 70 to 90o F during the summer and from 45 to 70o F during the spring and fall, but be prepared for occasional extremes. Rainfall varies from region to region. Florence, where the rain falls heaviest in summer, experiences the most with 63 in (1,605 mm) per year. In Siena,  May, June, August, September and October have a nice average temperature. While the warmest months are July and August, as well as the driest.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet websit e by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip.  Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. You will also need clothing and comfortable walking shoes for more active hiking and bicycling. There is a small beach in Monterossa, so a bathing suit is suggested in warmer weather.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable. A sports jacket is not required.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Optional: Jacket and tie for men
  • Optional: Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots that have already been broken-in and a walking stick is suggested for hiking
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

  • Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces, and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit, and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias , small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello .
  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotel may provide hairdryers, irons and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.

  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.

  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.

Today Pisa is a very big academic centre and one of the most important universities is the Normale Superiore , wanted by Napoleon in 1810. Instead, in the middle ages it was a very important commercial centre and nominated a Maritime Republic together with Venice, Genoa and Amalfi. The river passing through Pisa is the same one of Florence, Arno. Here, you will see the Lungarno , the beutiful area along the river with historical palaces and shops. In Pisa we will have a stop at the famous square of Piazza dei Miracoli , where you will admire the beauty of the architectural complex belonging to UNESCO since 1987. Here, you find the well-known Leaning Tower , the Cathedral , the Baptistry and the Camposanto (the Graveyard).

Campo dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower in Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is surely one of the most famous Italian attractions abroad. It is considered nowadays one of the seven wonders of the medieval world and many tourists come here every year to see it. However, it belong to a bigger architectural complex in this square and it represents the Cahedral’s Bell Tower. It was designed to be perfectly vertical, but it started leaning because of the terrain sinking. Today it is leaning to 13.5 after the last restoration. In fact, in the years many efforts were done to stabilize the building and monitor the situation.

Pisa Leaning Tower

Around the square’s perimeter, you find also the Opera del Duomo Museum and  Museum of the Sinopie which is worth a visit.

Discover the ancient Lucca on our Private Shore Excursion from Livorno

After visiting the magnificient square of Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, we will move to another historical town, Lucca. This was the hometown of the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. We will visit the beautiful St. Martin’s Cathedral , a Roman Catholic Church. In this church, the famous Holy Face crucifix is stored. In the medieval Ages, many pilgrims reached Lucca in order to see this small wooden statue. According to a legend Nicodemus himself carved it after the resurrection of Christ. The Cathedral follows the main street in Lucca, Fillungo , full of shops and elegant palaces. Also, you will see the Roman Amphitheatre (Piazza dell’Anfiteatro). This is the main square in Lucca, with the shape of the old arena located here in Roman Times. Additionally, The town is famous for few towers: The Clock Tower (Torre delle Ore), the highest one in Lucca with a very old Clock (1390) and the medieval Torre Guinigi , also called the Green Tower. Indeed, it features a oaktree on its top. The view over the town is very nice from there.

The ancient City Walls in Lucca

Pisa and Lucca with Wine Experience Shore Excursion from Livorno Port

Lucca has an oval shape and develops around the Roman Amphitheatre square. Many people call it the city with a hundred churches . In fact, you can find many religious building within its walls. The medieval walls around the whole historical centre distinguish Lucca from other Tuscan towns. They do not serve a defensive purpose anymore, but today a green lawn covers their top. It represents quite a big park, where people can walk for 4 km and admire the town from a different perspective. Locals like to walk around Lucca on its wide walls. Moreover, most of the historical centre within the walls is a pedestrian area. That makes it nicer to walk around the narrow streets and explore the old town on foot.

Exclusive Wine Experience on our Shore Excursion

After our visit in Lucca, we will reach a special winery selected for you. There you will learn more about winemaking in Italy and about the wine regulation. You will learn the difference between DOCG and IGT wine labels. In addition, you will enjoy a unique wine experiece and taste high quality Tuscan wines. We only knew Pisa, so we have choosen this tour to visit the famous Leaning Tower, but we have been impressed by the town of Lucca. It is a typical Medieval Tuscan Town, full of monuments and good food. Also Montecarlo Village was great, especially its wines!! We suggest everyone to discover Pisa and Lucca with BellaItaliaTour 😉

We had recently gone on the private tour visiting Lucca, Pisa, Winery in Tuscany with Massimo from BellaItalia tour and all I can say is that if you get a chance to travel to Italy book this guy. He is intelligent, energetic, friendly and truly knows the country extremely well. He made us feel as if we lived there and not outsiders, telling us about oldest and the best restaurants in the area. If you like to learn about the country or simply try assorted Italian food, Max is your guy. All I can say is that he made the experience enjoyable and truly memorable.

Pisa is at once the best known and the most mysterious of tuscan cities..

Its most celebrated monument (THE LEANING TOWER) has become, along with the COLOSSEUM, gondolas and spaghetti a symbol for the entire ITALIAN REPUBBLIC. Pisa's origins are unknown. The city lies at the junction of two rivers, Arno and Auser (now disappeared) in the Ligurian Sea forming a laguna area. The Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Ligurians have variously been proposed as founders of the city. Archeological remains from the 5th century BC confirm the existence of a city at the sea, trading with Greeks and Gauls. The presence of an Etruscan necropolis was discovered during excavations in the Arena Garibaldi in 1991. From the 11th to the 13th century, PISA's powerful navy ensured the city's dominance in the western Mediterranean. Trading links with SPAIN and NORTH AFRICA led to a scientific and cultural revolution reflected in the splendid buildings at the era:

DUOMO, BAPTISTRY and THE CAMPANILE (BELL TOWER).

Pisa's decline was assured when the ARNO began to silt up. Salt marsh, partly a nature reserve now divides the city from the sea. The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply The Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the Cathedral and it is the third structure by time in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square). Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction. building: the 13th century square tower at Suurhusen and the nearby 14th century bell tower in the town of Bad Frankenhausen (Sunday Telegraph no 2,406- 22nd July The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the lowest side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the highest side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. The tower has 296 or 294 steps ;the seventh floor has two less steps on the north-facing staircase. The tower leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees. This means that the top of the tower is 3.9 meters from where it would stand if the tower were perfectly vertical.

In PISA our drivers can drive you in the FIELD OF MIRACLES where you can visit THE DUOMO, THE BAPTISTRY, THE LEANING TOWER, CAMPOSANTO. You can visit also PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI with its beautiful buildings.

Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of a pre-existing Ligurian settlement) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical center preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre can still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Frediano, an Irish monk, was bishop of Lucca in the early 5th century.[1] At one point, Lucca was plundered by Odoacer, the first Germanic King of Italy. Lucca was an important city and fortress even in the 6th century, when Narses besieged it for several months in 553. Under the Lombards, it was the seat of a duke who minted his own coins. The Holy Face of Lucca (or Volto Santo), a major relic supposedly carved by Nicodemus, arrived in 742. It became prosperous through the silk trade that began in the 11th century, and came to rival the silks of Byzantium. During the 10-11th centuries Lucca was the capital of the feudal margravate of Tuscany, more or less independent but owing nominal allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor. After the death of Matilda of Tuscany, the city began to constitute itself an independent commune, with a charter in 1160. For almost 500 years, Lucca remained an independent republic. There were many minor provinces in the region between southern Liguria and northern Tuscany dominated by the Malaspina; Tuscany in this time was a part of feudal Europe. Dante's Divine Comedy includes many references to the great feudal families who had huge jurisdictions with administrative and judicial rights. Dante spent some of his exile in Lucca. In 1273 and again in 1277 Lucca was ruled by a Guelph capitano del popolo (captain of the people) named Luchetto Gattilusio. In 1314, internal discord allowed Uguccione della Faggiuola of Pisa to make himself lord of Lucca. The Lucchesi expelled him two years later, and handed over the city to another condottiere Castruccio Castracani, under whose rule it became a leading state in central Italy. Lucca rivalled Florence until Castracani's death in 1328. On 22 and 23 September 1325, in the battle of Altopascio, Castracani defeated Florence's Guelphs. For this he was nominated by Louis IV the Bavarian to become duke of Lucca. Castracani's tomb is in the church of San Francesco. His biography is Machiavelli's third famous book on political rule. In 1408, Lucca hosted the convocation intended to end the schism in the papacy. Occupied by the troops of Louis of Bavaria, the city was sold to a rich Genoese, Gherardino Spinola, then seized by John, king of Bohemia. Pawned to the Rossi of Parma, by them it was ceded to Martino della Scala of Verona, sold to the Florentines, surrendered to the Pisans, and then nominally liberated by the emperor Charles IV and governed by his vicar. Lucca managed, at first as a democracy, and after 1628 as an oligarchy, to maintain its independence alongside of Venice and Genoa, and painted the word Libertas on its banner until the French Revolution in 1789.

Where to stay in tuscany, find the best places to stay in tuscany.

T uscany, that haven in central Italy, is a magnificent place. It consists of various provinces and towns, each with its unique environment but sharing in the same cultural heritage.

Seeing its vast area and wealth of options, I thought it best to compile some of the best places to stay in Tuscany. Whether you’re looking for a general area or a specific hotel or B&B, then I’ve got you covered with the best!

Also make sure to read our Tuscany itinerary to help you plan your trip and our guide on the best wine tours in Tuscany .

Florence: Tourist Hot Spot of Tuscany

If you’re looking for the tourist heart of Tuscany, you’ll find it in the city of Florence . Its Renaissance quarters are especially interesting, with sights like the Piazza della Signoria and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

The city’s main claim to fame, aside from being the cradle of the Renaissance, is being very walkable. There aren’t many cities in the world with as much history and examples of art within such a small area. So, you can literally drop off anywhere, head in any direction, and you’ll discover some of its best spots.

If even the city’s small span isn’t enough for you, you can find the epicenter of Florence’s treasures at the Galleria degli Uffizi , located at Piazzale degli Uffizi 6. This museum has the world’s biggest collection of Renaissance art. There’s around 100 rooms spread across two floors, lined up chronologically from ancient Greek art to 18th-century pieces.

While you’re in the neighborhood, don’t miss a chance to explore (and take a picture at) the Duomo, the most famous piece of architecture in the city. Its iconic cupola atop its graceful-yet-dominating architecture is impossible to miss.

Hotel Spadai in Florence

Now exactly where to stay in Tuscany’s Florence? Right in the middle is the beautiful and rustic Hotel Spadai . Just a hundred meters from the Florence Cathedral, the hotel is a stunning mix of contemporary and antique furnishings that immerse you in the Florence atmosphere. It gives you a piece of Florence’s historicity during your stay.

The hotel is complete with all you need for an amazing stay, such as a private spa and a staff that doubles as a tour company!

Hotel Spadai is at Via dei Martelli. You can reach Florence through Vespucci Airport, or through the country’s railway network (most lines have a Florence station). If you’re taking a road trip, the A1 Motorway runs past the city.

Siena: Rich With History

Another picturesque town with many cultural and historical treasures, plus a great vantage point from which you can view the undulating Tuscan hills, is Siena . Don’t miss the Campo Square and the Cathedral, Siena’s very own Duomo.

This Gothic marvel is stunning both in and out, with over 200 years’ worth of Biblical art laid in its floor’s 56 panels! If you can’t get enough of the distinct flavors of Sienese art, go to the Museo Civico via the Cortile del Podesta and check out some of the best secular works of art of the 1300s.

One of the best views is via the awesome Hotel Athena , which is also mere walking distance from some of the province’s tourist attractions. Located in Via P. Mascagni, Hotel Athena is furnished with local handicrafts. Its terrace allows for a perfect view of the Tuscan hills, and its restaurant gives you a taste of fresh Sienese cuisine!

You can get to Siena from Florence via a 90-minute train ride, or via a rapidé SITA bus. If you’re taking a car, the travel time is around two hours but you’ll have to park outside the city walls.

Family Friendly Lucca

This is one of the more child-friendly parts of the Tuscan region, thanks to less tourist traffic and a decidedly more low-key vibe. It is a great launching point if you want to go to the area’s coastal towns, like Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio.

Don’t skip town immediately, though — the Cattedrale di San Martino is a rustic Romanesque piece of architecture from the 11th century, and one of the locale’s best-kept treasures. There are also two museums, the Museo della Cattedrale and the Museo Villa Puccini.

Lucca is best enjoyed through villas like the opulent-yet-simple Villa Pardi, with its wide and pretty grounds. The simple yet opulent design perfectly captures the airy luxury of the Tuscan countryside, with its manicured grounds, tall rooms, and tasteful decors. Villa Pardi is located at Via di Poggio Seconda. You can get to Lucca through the train line that runs from Florence to Viareggio.

World Famous Pisa

Primarily famous for its leaning tower and its history as a maritime superpower, Pisa is even better if you wait until nightfall when the crowds have gone home. This brings out the real atmosphere of the place!

Being a university student town, Pisa is more raw than either Florence or Siena. That does not mean it doesn’t have its own examples of fine art and architecture, such as the dome-upon-dome of the Battistero and the haunting quadrangle of the Camposanto.

Pisa is home to Bologna Hotel Pisa , which brings Pisa’s distinctive airs indoors, immersing you in the local flavor. The prestigious furnishings are unmistakably Italian, balanced between the practical and the dramatic. Just half a kilometer from the Cathedral and the main artery, this is the place to be.

Bologna Hotel is located on Via Giuseppe. You can get from Florence to Pisa via the ItaliaRail. You can also get to the town proper via the airport through either the Terravision or Autostradale buses.

Quaint and Charming San Casciano in Val di Pesa

Tuscany is not just about its famous provinces — there’s a specific charm to living in one of its small towns, too. This town, for example, has been almost completely rebuilt from the ground up after it suffered destruction during WWII.

While it does not have a bunch of art and architecture to its name, it is the Tuscan hub for wine and olive oil production. It is also one of the centers of agritourism in the area.

Imagine simply sitting back and enjoying some time trading stories with locals, surrounding yourself with amazing views such as the flowers of Le Dimore Mezza Costa (just one of the many top-notch bed and breakfast here). This quaint lodging is good enough to be a movie set, and modern enough with such amenities as flat screen TVs, free WiFi, and a private bathroom!

The B&B is located in Via Borromeo. San Casciano in Val di Pesa, particularly, is near enough to Florence but isolated enough from its hustle and bustle. It can be reached by a dual carriageway called by different names — autopalio, superstrada Firenze-Siena, and Raccordo Autostradele RA03. The line connects the place to both Florence and Siena, and is free for the time being!

Pietrasanta: Little Town with Big Art

If you’d like a little more art with your stay, then consider this little town in the Versilia region. Aside from the slow pace, the area is also a haven of creativity and there’s always a work of art being born in the traditional Tuscan spirit of the airy and the earthy. In fact, there are many workshops and art galleries here.

Make sure to stop by the Via della Rocca, which leads up to the ancient structures of Pietrasanta. The place also has its own Duomo and Battistero, which are both worthy of your visit!

The La Sosta degli Artisti is among the best places to stay in in this town, and also among the most evocative of the artistic airs prevalent here. It’s one of the more boutique hotels Tuscany offers. They serve a mean organic breakfast, and they have a spa that combines color and music therapy — just what you would expect in an art-oriented B&B! They have themed rooms, too. You can reach La Sosta at the Viale Guglielmo Oberdan. Pietrasanta can also be reached via Trenitalia’s Firenze-Pisa-Livorno line.

Barga: For The Nature Lovers

If you really love nature, Tuscany has plenty in store for you, and one of the best places for it is Barga. It’s a town which manages to evade the throngs of tourists in order to extol nature’s beauty. Make sure your camera can handle all the pics you would want to take here!

It has some great spots for art, too. The streets themselves were built between the 15th and 17th centuries, along with the town’s Romanesque Cathedral.

It’s a small town with a small selection of lodgings. However, you can’t go wrong with La Serra di Barga thanks to its breathtaking views of a lake and its proximity to downtown Barga. It even offers a view to the Duomo. This attractive B&B is located at 55051 Barga. The town itself is a three-hour bus ride from Florence. You start at the Via Delle Porte Nuove 17, then change at the Pizzale Verdi, and ending at P. Za Salvi.

Pistoia: Tuscany’s Hidden Gem

This spot might not appear on the radar of many tourists. However, Pistoia is another great launching point for excursions into Lucca and Florence. This is primarily because it sits halfway between the two provinces, on a train line to each.

Hailed as a European City of Culture, it sits at the foot of the Apennine mountains. In fact, some of its best art pieces are stored in the Museo dell’Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi. The Cappella del Tau, on the other hand, is a treat for anyone who appreciates the Gothic style of architecture.

The town also has a raw feel, which is perfect for those looking for authenticity above all else. Make sure to stay at the Locanda San Marco Palazzo Caluri, whose grand and homey feel will transport you to an environment fit for a movie set. The place is a 17th-century structure, and is just 15 minutes from the train station (at Via Porta San Marco). Using the Trenitalia’s Firenze-Pistoia-Lucca line, you can reach Pistoia.

Picturesque Certaldo

If you want to straddle isolation and ease of transportation, then Certaldo is hard to beat. This is a picturesque hilltop town with a railroad running at its lower part. In fact, you would have to love the hike. That’s easy to do, given the sweeping panorama of the surrounding country that Certaldo affords.

Certaldo’s walled half on the hill, Rio Castello, is a can’t miss. The Palazzo Pretorio, a keep that housed the governors from Florence during the 12th century, is also worthy of visit.

Adding to the local charm is the Podere Benintendi , which looks more like a mansion than anything — imagine a large property surrounded by well-maintained lawns and trees, with a pool set in the middle! In fact, the entire place is on a hill, therefore giving it an awesome view of the Tuscan valleys. It is located on Via Montebello Benintendi. Certaldo can be reached via the Firenze-Empoli-Siena line or the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno lines of the Trenitalia.

The Tuscan Countryside

True, this may not sound like an exact area. But you wouldn’t be in Tuscany if you had to be bound to a specific place just to enjoy it. In fact, the Tuscan countryside extends from Florence to Siena. It’s bounded in the east by Valdarno and in the west by San Miniato.

This section is particularly interesting because of its proximity to the many Tuscan sights, along with many of its villas and farmhouses. Luckily, the farmhouses have been turned into lodgings, some of which are available on VRBO! This means you can easily live the traditional laidback lifestyle in an authentic setting!

While you’re here, you’re in a perfect spot to explore the places that make this side of Italy so charming. There’s Pisa, Florence, San Gimignano, Lucca, and the Chianti wine area. The lush, rolling hills and sun-kissed vineyards surrounding you will in themselves be worth staying for.

Of course, your choice of lodgings would depend on your itinerary. If you’ve taken a tour such as those that Get Your Guide offers, it will be easier to be based off a main province like Florence or Siena. However, if you’re out to explore the local flavor and see what the locals are up to, then moving into one of the small towns is a better option, but it will be almost impossible to do without a rental car.

Though, whichever you choose, it’s pretty much guaranteed an adventure. Whether you stay in one of the luxury hotels Tuscany has or a cheaper vacation rental, you can’t run out of things to see and do during your Tuscany excursion!
