San Francisco to Monterey: 7 Great Ways to Get Here

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

Published: August 22, 2023

Are you looking for the best way to get from San Francisco to Monterey? My guide offers tips to help you find the best option to take you the 120 miles between these two Northern California towns.

The seven best ways include two different driving routes, a day tour from SF, the Monterey Airbus from SFO, the bus, the Amtrak train, and Uber/Lyft.

Read on for details about each option, including how long they take and other things to consider before you decide.

1. Drive Highway 1 from San Francisco to Monterey

One of the most popular options is to drive from San Francisco to Monterey via Highway 1 (also called the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH). This drive offers fantastic views along the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay waterfront.

As you leave San Francisco, you will take US-101 south, exit 431 to merge onto I-280 S toward Daly City, and follow signs for CA-1/Pacifica. CA-1 is the coastal road you will then take all the way south to Monterey.

This is the slow and easy route for those who are up for a day of driving and stopping to explore the area. In other words, this option is for travelers who aren't in too big of a hurry to get to Monterey.

Some of the great places to stop and explore along the way include Half Moon Bay , Pigeon Point Light Station State Park, and Año Nuevo State Park (a famous spot to check out elephant seals).

You can also spend a little time in Santa Cruz, where you can explore the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, local wineries, and its beaches ( find more fun things to do in Santa Cruz here ).

Other spots to check out along the way include Capitola, Aptos, and Moss Landing.

This scenic drive takes anywhere from 2 hours and 15 minutes to 3 hours without stops. If you plan to make stops along the way, this could take all morning or even all day!

2. Take a Day Tour from San Francisco to Monterey Bay

Monterey Waterfront

If you prefer to let someone else drive, this one-day tour from San Francisco to Monterey Bay is a great option.

With a 7:30 am pickup in either Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf, this tour starts first thing in the morning in San Francisco, takes you down Highway 1 with a few photo stops along the way, and then arrives in Monterey mid-morning.

As you cruise along, your knowledgeable guide will offer details about places you pass, including their history and other fun stories.

Once you arrive in Monterey, you will have some time on your own to explore this seaside town. You will stop at Cannery Row, where you can do a little shopping, take some pictures along the waterfront, or grab some lunch.

You will then continue on to see the famous 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach (including a stop at Lone Cyprus) and then a short break in Carmel-by-the-Sea. You will then return to San Francisco.

I've taken this tour a few times, and you can read more about my experience here .

During the lower season (October to April), it's offered on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays. During the higher season (May to September), it's additionally offered on Tuesdays.

You can learn more about this tour, including how to book here .

3. drive highway i-280 and ca-1.

If you want to get from San Francisco to Monterey a little faster, then driving via I-280 and CA-1 is another great option. This route (without stops) takes about 2 hours (or 2.5 during rush hour traffic).

The great thing about this option is that you can get to Monterey early enough to spend a few hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, stroll along Cannery Row, and check out Pacific Grove.

Although this path doesn't take you along the California coast, it allows you to spend more time in Monterey exploring everything it offers.

4. Monterey Airbus from SFO

Sunny Day along Monterey's Cannery Row

If you have luggage and plan to stay in the Monterey Bay area for a few days, you can also use the Monterey Airbus from the San Francisco International Airport. This is a great option if you plan to fly into SFO and need to get to Monterey or if you are staying in San Francisco and want to visit this wonderful area.

The Monterey Airbus offers daily rides from San Francisco to Monterey between 5 am and midnight. The shuttles leave about every hour and 15 minutes from either the international or domestic terminal of SFO, so there are plenty of options throughout the day.

The ride takes about 2.5 hours from San Francisco and drops you off at the Shuttle Station in the heart of downtown Monterey. From here, you can easily walk to your hotel or grab an Uber or Lyft if you need to go a bit further.

This stop in Monterey is also only about a 10-minute walk to Old Fisherman's Wharf, a 20-minute walk to Cannery Row, or a 30-minute walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

5. Bus from San Francisco to Monterey

The next option is to take the Flixbus from San Francisco to Monterey. The Flixbus does not have a stop directly in Monterey but instead will drop you off at the train station in Salinas.

This bus runs about four days a week. It departs from 5th and Townsend Streets, near the Caltrain Station just two blocks from Oracle Park.

Most leave San Francisco around 11:40 am, arriving in Salinas at 1:55 pm. Once you arrive in Salinas, you will then need to transfer to a local bus.

The 20 is your best option (it picks up at the same station where the Flixbus drops you off), and this will take you to the corner of Tyler/Franklin Streets in downtown Monterey. This local bus takes about 50 minutes.

From here, you are just a few minutes from the top attractions, including Old Fisherman's Wharf, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Cannery Row.

The Flixbus takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to Salinas. With the 20 bus from Salinas to Monterey, your total travel time is around 3.5 hours. The total estimated cost each way is $25 to 40.

>> Visit the Flixbus site to book your tickets

6. Amtrak from San Francisco to Monterey

Monterey Canning Company

Amtrak is another way to get from San Francisco to Monterey, though it's not as direct. This option involves both train and bus. The train you will take is part of the Coast Starlight route.

It runs from Emeryville, CA, down to Salinas, CA, so you will have a couple of transfers to get you all the way from San Francisco to Monterey.

You'll start by taking the Amtrak Thruway Connecting Service bus from the Salesforce Gondola in downtown San Francisco over the Bay Bridge to Emeryville.

Here you will catch your train down to Salinas. From there, you will take another Amtrak connecting bus, which will drop you in downtown Monterey.

This is a great option for those that love the train, have plenty of time to get to Monterey, and don't mind the additional transfers.

The estimated time for this trip is about 6 hours. The estimated cost is about $50 each way.

7. Uber/Lyft from San Francisco to Monterey

The final option is costly but perfect for those who don't want to drive, and for whom budget is not a concern.

Rideshare services are popular all around San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. They are readily available, and you can book them in advance so you can leave and arrive when it fits into your schedule.

Uber and Lyft are headquartered in San Francisco and offer services from San Francisco to Monterey. This option costs around $175 to $250 before taxes and tips. The standard vehicles have room for up to three people with luggage.

If you need additional room, you can order the Lyft or Uber XL, which offers bigger vehicles, but this service costs more.

I don't recommend heading down during rush hour as the price will increase quite a bit.

You can also plug in the location you are staying at in San Francisco and the place you want to visit in Monterey to get a better estimate on how much it will cost from point to point (just don't request the vehicle until you need it).

This option will take two and a half hours from most pick-up locations around San Francisco.

Monterey to San Francisco: Pacific Coast Highway Roadtrip Guide

After passing Big Sur , this day on Pacific Coast Highway can be a little anti-climactic. However, you can still see a ton of amazing things, and you will be ending in the famous San Francisco, so that alone is exciting if you have never been. A lot of my recommendations here are in Santa Cruz as I love that town, but places like Half Moon Bay should also be explored as well. I would love to hear what you like to visit on this stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in the comments as well. Here are all my stops.

17 Mile Drive

travel from monterey to san francisco

If you skipped the 17 mile drive the previous day, then consider backtracking a little bit and doing it today. This drive costs, but it takes you through some of the most beautiful parts of the Monterey/Carmel coastline. Plus, you can visit Pebble Beach while you are there if you are a golfer as well.  Read more about Pebble Beach here .

Monterey Aquarium

travel from monterey to san francisco

I would not leave Monterrey without seeing the famous aquarium, especially if you have children as it is one of the best aquariums I have ever been too. They have so much to see that it can be overwhelming if you don’t have a few hours, but it is still a great spot. Read more about the aquarium here .

Glaum Egg Ranch

Glaum Egg Vending Machine5

If you are camping, then Glaum Egg Ranch would be an excellent stop to get some home-grown organic eggs in a way I guarantee that you have not done before. You pay your cash, and the vending machine starts dancing then delivers you two dozen eggs. Yes, it is random, but it is fun. Read more about the Egg Vending Machine here .

Seacliff State Beach & Aptos Pier

Seacliff Shipwreck Pier 12

Aptos Pier and Seacliff State Beach is a spot that you want to experience. At the end of the pier is a massive cement ship that was an amusement park decades ago and now is just sitting there sunk in the water. I love this type of stuff, and it is an excellent place for photography. Read about Seacliff State Beach here .

Santa Cruz Mystery Spot

Mystery Spot Santa Cruz 2

One of Santa Cruz’s most famous places, the Mystery Spot is a gimmicky place that people love. I recommend going with an open mind and just having fun as it is silly but well worth the cost. Read about the Mystery Spot here .

Santa Cruz Food 1

For lunch, I recommend stopping at Burger, which is a trendy eatery in Santa Cruz with an insane amount of sandwich and burger options. All the food numbers feature headshots of celebrities, and the entire spot has art all over the walls. It’s unique, and it has excellent food. You can also look at my other Santa Cruz food options here as well.

Natural Bridges State Park

Natural Bridges State Beach 9

While it is called Natural Bridges, there is only one original “bridge” now since the other caved in years ago. That doesn’t take away from how amazing it is though. The massive rock arch out in the water is like a photographer’s dream, especially at sunset. Read more  about Natural Bridges State Park .

Shark Fin Cove

travel from monterey to san francisco

This beach is one of the most unique on the entire coastal drive. Right in the middle, there is a significant rock that looks like a shark fin sticking out of the water. It is hard to find, so read more about it here .

travel from monterey to san francisco

This state park is home to hundreds of sea lions. The park has a 3-mile trail that lets you walk out among these gentle giants, and it is an uncommon experience. Read all about it here .

Half Moon Bay

travel from monterey to san francisco

Half Moon Bay is another iconic beach town on Pacific Coast Highway, and it features the equally famous Ritz Carlton Hotel out on the bluffs that must be seen to be believed. There are a lot of fun places to shop and explore, which you can read about in this post .

Devils Slide

travel from monterey to san francisco

Once the most dangerous part of Pacific Coast Highway, this road has been repurposed into a hiking and biking trail. It is a beautiful way to get out and stretch your legs while walking along the coast. Read more about it .

Taco Bell on the Beach

travel from monterey to san francisco

This recommendation is precisely what you would think it is, a Taco Bell that sits practically on the sand. It is one of the cheapest ocean view meals you will ever have. Read about it here .

Things to do in San Francisco

You could spend weeks in San Francisco and not even see a fraction of it. Here is a video I made on some of my favorite stops or read more below.

Mosaic Steps

Mosiac Steps San Francisco

From here, I recommend just heading into San Francisco so you can spend a good amount of time there. One of my favorite spots in the Mosaic Steps. This community project is a collection of painted steps that head up to an equally famous overlook of the city. I love this spot, as it is so unique. Read more about Mosaic Steps here .

Palace of Fine Arts

Palace of Fine Arts 11

Another crazy stop is the Palace of Fine Arts, which will make you feel like you were transported to Europe with the architecture and style of the buildings. It is so beautiful and is a famous spot for engagements, as you would expect. Read about the Palace of Fine Arts here .

Brenda’s Soul Food

Brendas Soul Food 1

My favorite place in the city for food is Brenda’s Soul Food. I have eaten here so many times, and it has never let me down. Be warned, it is not in a great neighborhood, especially at night, but the food is fantastic.  Read about Brenda’s Soul Food .

For a fun dinner/night adventure other than Brenda’s, I would recommend wandering the famous and touristy Pier 39. It has excellent views of Alcatraz; there are usually seals at the end, and it has a lot of food spots for the whole family.

Mama’s

Mamas San Francisco

When you get up in the morning, I would recommend Mama’s as it has one of the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had, and I think about it often. Get there before it opens though, as the wait here can be legit crazy. Read more about Mama’s here .

travel from monterey to san francisco

Lastly, no visit to San Francisco is complete without heading over to Alcatraz, the famous prison island in the middle of the water. I thought this would be too touristy for me, but it ended up being a fantastic experience that I highly recommend. Read more about Alcatraz here .

I don’t have a lot of recommendations for places to stay in San Francisco as it can be expensive wherever you go, so I would just recommend staying wherever your budget allows. Here is a link to hotels in San Francisco . It will get cheaper as you head into Mendocino and Fort Bragg tomorrow anyway.

Can you believe you have already spent four days on this crazy drive? I know it goes fast and I hope you are enjoying yourself. Be sure to leave comments on the spots you have been that I may have missed as well and read all about PCH in my guide here .

From San Francisco to Monterey: 3 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Lisa Alexander Feb 3, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Lisa Alexander is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and returns regularly.

Monterey nestles along an expansive bay, about 100 miles south of San Francisco on California's picturesque Central Coast. Because of its postcard-perfect setting, historic charm, and wide array of tourist attractions, Monterey is one of the most popular day trips from San Francisco . Fortunately, it's also easy to get from San Francisco to Monterey, with a variety of options available for travelers.

Panorama of Monterey Bay

We recommend three different ways to get from San Francisco to Monterey, plus the considerations to keep in mind with each transportation option. The best way to get there depends on your vacation itinerary, budget, and other travel preferences.

Start planning your trip from San Francisco to Monterey with our list of transportation options.

On This Page:

  • From San Francisco to Monterey by Car
  • From San Francisco to Monterey by Organized Tour
  • From San Francisco to Monterey by Train

1. From San Francisco to Monterey by Car

Wildflowers along Monterey Bay

Driving is the best option for travelers who would like explore at their own pace and perhaps stop along the way. Having a car allows for flexibility in trip planning.

Many travelers prefer to enjoy a weekend getaway from San Francisco rather than a day trip, because the drive is quite long for just one day of sightseeing.

The drive from San Francisco to Monterey takes about 2.5 hours on the quickest route, usually the Highway 101 route . This route includes highway roads much of the way, but you may encounter traffic in the San Jose area and, unfortunately, the ride is not scenic until you reach Santa Cruz. The remainder of the drive, from Santa Cruz to Monterey, takes about 50 minutes along Highway One, which follows alongside the coastline and affords stunning views.

Recommended Stops along the Highway 101 Route: If you love classic beach towns, you will want to stop in Santa Cruz on your way to Monterey. The two towns are only 43 miles apart, yet the ambience is completely different. A place for recreation and seaside vacations, Santa Cruz offers fun in the sun at its sandy beaches , historic boardwalk amusement park, and lively downtown.

Two worthwhile detours near Monterey on the Highway 101 route include the Mission San Juan Bautista with its elaborate building complex, gorgeous manicured grounds, and the original Spanish plaza, all of which is designated as a National Historic Landmark, as well as a California State Historic Park. and the town of Salinas, home to the National Steinbeck Center .

When the Highway 101 route has a lot of traffic, the Highway 280 + Highway 17 route from San Francisco to Santa Cruz may be the faster option. This route is much more scenic than Highway 101, as the stretch along Highway 280 runs parallel to the wooded rolling hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The portion along Highway 17 winds through a dense redwood forest. From Santa Cruz, the route continues along the spectacular Highway One until Monterey.

Recommended Stops on the Highway 280 + Highway 17 Route: There are two recommended stops: the rustic-chic town of Woodside, which has a Michelin-starred restaurant ( The Village Pub ), a gourmet grocery store, and other foodie destinations; and the bustling town of Los Gatos, with its charming downtown; mountain views; and great selection of boutiques, cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. Los Gatos is an ideal stopping point, since it is almost exactly halfway between San Francisco and Monterey.

For the most scenic route, take Highway One the entire way. This coastal route takes about 30 minutes longer, but rewards with sweeping ocean views as the road curves around hillsides that overlook the Pacific.

Recommended Stops on Highway One: The Highway One route also offers the possibility to stop in several picturesque seaside towns: Pacifica, a little oceanfront town just 15 miles south of San Francisco; Half Moon Bay ; and rural Pescadero, which has a famous restaurant called Duarte's.

Other places to visit along the way include oceanfront Davenport, which boasts some of the area's best beaches ; idyllic Capitola, with its colorful waterfront houses, ocean-view restaurants, small sandy beach, and wooden fishing pier; and Santa Cruz , loved by families, surfers, and sun-worshippers for its beach boardwalk, surfing culture, and summer sunshine.

Travelers can pick up a rental car at the San Francisco Airport Rental Car Center or in downtown San Francisco at Alamo, Enterprise, SIXT Rent-a-Car, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, and Hertz car rental agencies.

2. From San Francisco to Monterey by Organized Tour

View from 17-Mile Drive en route to Monterey

Joining a guided excursion takes the stress out of traveling from San Francisco to Monterey and is the best option for visiting Monterey as a day trip from San Francisco.

The Monterey, Carmel, and 17-Mile Drive Full-Day Tour from San Francisco allows travelers to easily visit Monterey, while leaving the hassle of driving to someone else. This all-day (11-hour) guided tour takes participants on Highway One, the scenic coastal route, from San Francisco to Monterey.

The tour includes free time in Monterey to visit Cannery Row, Old Fisherman's Wharf, and/or the Monterey Bay Aquarium (purchase your tickets in advance), as well as a stop in the charming seaside village of Carmel , reached via the famous 17-Mile Drive. While in Carmel, participants will have a chance to browse the town's art galleries and quaint locally owned boutiques.

3. From San Francisco to Monterey by Train

Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey

For those who prefer not to drive , and plan to spend at least a few days in Monterey, it makes sense to take the train from San Francisco to Monterey. However, travelers should keep in mind that the multi-leg train journey takes six hours and requires two connections .

During peak travel season, Amtrak provides one route per day from San Francisco, departing at 7am and arriving in Monterey at 1pm. The service departs from San Francisco by bus; connects to a train service in Emeryville, which continues on to Salinas; and finally connects to a bus in Salinas that drops off travelers at Monterey Transit Plaza.

The Monterey Transit Plaza is in downtown Monterey, near many shops and restaurants. From this location, travelers can easily walk to many of Monterey's top attractions . For instance, it's just steps away from the Monterey Museum of Art and only a 10-minute walk to the Monterey State Historic Park. It takes about 30 minutes to walk from downtown Monterey to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or about 15 minutes by bus.

Where to Stay in Monterey: Those staying overnight in Monterey can choose from hotels in downtown Monterey, such as the four-star Monterey Marriott and the four-star resort property, Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay .

Tourists also enjoy the hotels near the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in the Monterey waterfront district . One of the top waterfront hotels is the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa , which overlooks the crashing waves of Monterey Bay and is steps away from Cannery Row.

Planning a day trip to Monterey is one of the best things you could do if you’re spending an extended time in San Francisco.

This lovely bayside city on California’s beautiful central coast has a lot to offer visitors boasting everything from lovely natural scenery to a fascinating history spanning hundreds of years.

Though one could easily visit Monterey for a number of days — especially if using it as a base to explore Big Sur — planning a Monterey day trip is a great way to see this lovely city if you’re a bit short on time.

Table of Contents

Getting to Monterey from San Francisco

In all honesty, if you want to go on a day trip independently, then you need to do it by car.

It will come as no surprise that though the San Francisco Bay Area is well-known for its decent public transit, this doesn’t translate as far down as the Central Coast to Monterey.

While you certainly do not need a car for your time in San Francisco, it can be worth renting one for a day or two. Monterey lies about 2 hours south of San Francisco driving, depending on the route.

If you want to go a more scenic way along the CA Highway 1 (also known as the Pacific Coast Highway or the PCH), then plan that to take you about 2.25-2.5 hours. It can be a good idea to take the PCH on the way to Monterey and take the quicker route along the US-101 Freeway.

If you need to hire a car, then we suggest using Rental ars.Com . This platform aggregates prices across many car rental companies ensuring that you get a great deal on a rental car.

Having a car for this day trip from San Francisco is also preferable as there are some stops on the itinerary that don’t lie within walking distance of each other and would be otherwise inaccessible without your own personal vehicle.

Santa Cruz - a stop on the way from San Francisco to Monterey

If you want to go to Monterey but don’t drive — or simply don’t want to go through the hassle of renting a car and going there independently, then the best option for you is to go by organised tour.

There are a number of great day tours from San Francisco that take you all around the area and include the majority of the stops on this list (though not all!) so you can get a good feel for the city.

If you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg and want a reliable and convenient way to get to the Monterey area from San Francisco, then this guided tour or this guided tour are both great options.

All four tours have similar price points, offer pick-up and drop-off in San Francisco and take you to the highlights of Monterey (including an option to visit the aquarium at an additional charge), the 17-mile drive and Carmel-by-the Sea.

You can also organise a private tour though this will obviously come at a higher price.

Many will ask if it is possible to visit Monterey from San Francisco by the rail network. And while the short answer is yes, it is possible to take the train from San Francisco, in reality, it is not a good option for a day trip.

While there is a more defined rail network in the San Francisco Bay Area than in many areas of the United States, it doesn’t really extend to the Central Coast and that means that the train will take upwards of 5 hours on way — not great for a day trip!

Monterey Day Trip Itinerary

Now that we’ve covered all of the most pertinent information when it comes to getting to Monterey, we need to discuss what to actually do in Monterey.

I recommend trying to get as early a start leaving San Francisco as possible to ensure that you both beat traffic and potential tourist crowds and have as much time as possible to enjoy the lovely Monterey Bay.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

This is an optional stop, but one of the top attractions in Monterey is its world-famous aquarium and it is the absolute perfect place to begin your itinerary if you are willing to pay the high admission fee.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is well-known the world over for its innovative designs, incredible research and conservation work, if you’re at all interested in marine life, then you should definitely consider a visit to this incredible place.

Known for being the first aquarium to foster a living kelp forest, the first aquarium to effectively house and care for a Great White Shark and lauded for pioneering jellyfish animal husbandry, the biologists working for this aquarium are truly exceptional.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also well known for its conservation efforts regarding sea otters (one of the highlight exhibits in the aquarium!) and many other great initiatives.

If you choose to visit the aquarium plan to spend at least 1-2 hours here, depending on just how interested you are in the marine life of Monterey Bay.

Jellyfish in Monterey Bay Aquarium

Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail

After exploring the aquarium, or instead of going to the aquarium if you’re trying to cut the high cost of entry into the aquarium, take the time to enjoy Monterey Bay outside by strolling along the lovely Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail.

You can walk along this lovely trail for as little or as long as you like, but no matter how long you spend, you’re sure to enjoy your time here.

This coastal, paved trail spans 18 miles (about 29 kilometres) from the town of Castroville to the north of Monterey to the community of Pacific Grove in the south. Winding its way along the waterfront, it will also take you by some of the top sites of the city.

Cannery Row & Old Fisherman’s Wharf

Two of the most iconic sites in Monterey are Cannery Row and the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The former, located a stone’s throw from the Aquarium, is a historic area known for being home to now-closed sardine-canning factories.

It is also well-known for being the setting of the legendary John Steinbeck’s (a native to nearby Salinas, California) 1945 novel Cannery Row and 1954 sequel Sweet Thursday .

Incredibly historic and picturesque, make sure to take the time to stroll along here to see the beautiful waterfront and spot some otters and sea lions and maybe pop into one of the many shops that lie in this area.

A bit further north lies the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. Once an active fish market until the 1960s, it is not a tourist attraction that has plenty of seaside kitsch and cute shops that are sure to enchant the whole family.

You can take in some lovely views of the Bay from the wharf and make sure you get a few great photo opportunities from this iconic sight.

Cannery Row in Monterey

17-Mile Drive

Driving south from Cannery Row, it’s time to head out on what is considered to be one of the most scenic drives in the United States, the 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove.

This scenic route that winds its way through the Monterey Peninsula is very beautiful and lends to spectacular views of the dramatic seaside scenery.

You do have to pay to enter the 17-mile drive in Monterey (it costs $11.75 per vehicle), but it is very worth the cost.

There are countless places to stop off and enjoy the views, take some photos and try to spot some marine life. Depending on the season, you can see things like sea otters, sea lions and even whales off in the distance.

Viewpoint on the 17-mile drive in Monterey

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

From the 17-mile drive, head to a true hidden gem in Pacific Grove, the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Depending on the season you’re visiting in, this is home to thousands of migratory monarch butterflies and if you happen to be fortunate enough to visit in the months of October-March (we were!), you will be able to see these beautiful insects in droves for yourself.

Entry into this area is free of charge.

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

If you haven’t had enough of the beautiful natural scenery that lies along Monterey Bay (and how could you!), then you need to stop and enjoy the gorgeous Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just north of the beautiful town of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

This state park is filled with dramatic scenery beautiful seaside vistas and numerous walking trails that are great for whatever skill level you have. Whether you simply want to take a gentle stroll to enjoy more beautiful views or would rather take the time to go on a proper hike, this state park offers it all.

Entry into the park is $10 per vehicle.

Sunset at Point Lobos State Reserve in Carmel

Explore Carmel-by-the-Sea

From Point Lobos, continue south until you reach the postcard-perfect town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Known to be the slightly more upscale sister of Monterey, Carmel is identified by its quaint atmosphere, cobbled streets, cute shops and its former mayor (actor Clint Eastwood).

Take the time to wander through this lovely little town and explore the beautiful side streets and cute shops. There are lots of nice places to pop in and see in Carmel and you’re sure to be charmed by this lovely little city.

One quirky thing about Carmel-by-the-Sea is that it is actually illegal to wear high-heeled shoes (over two inches in height) in this town!

While, in practice, you are unlikely to receive any legal repercussions if you make the mistake of wearing heels on your day trip to Monterey, this is actually to make the residents and visitors safer because of the propensity for sprained ankles on the cobbled streets.

Wine Tasting in Carmel

As your Monterey day trip draws to a close, wind down by doing some local wine tastings in Carmel. Carmel is home to countless tasting rooms for local wineries and you can get a tasting flight for relatively affordable prices.

And, if you’re driving, it is entirely possible to share one tasting flight between two people to ensure that you don’t drink too much.

While there are lots of tasting rooms to choose from, we suggest heading to Scratch Wines if you want to support a female winemaker or, if you’re a fan of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, head to Albatross Ridge – they literally only have wines from these two grapes and it’s fascinating how much of a difference there is between each vintage. You can also take a food and wine tasting tour i f you have time.

Watch the Sunset at Carmel Beach

After your wine tasting, take the time to sober up a bit (or simply enjoy a bit more fresh, seaside air) by watching the sunset at the lovely Carmel Beach.

A romantic spot to end your day, you’re sure to enjoy the lovely scenery while watching the surfers try to catch their final waves before the sun sinks below the horizon.

If you’re heading back to San Francisco, expect about a 2-hour drive along the CA-101 N.

Have More Time?

If you are planning more than one day in Monterey, then there are lots of options available to you. For instance, you could take one day to head south and explore the incredible Big Sur region , famous for its stunning vistas and beautiful natural scenery. There are few places on the west coast more gorgeous.

You could also head out onto the water and maybe go on a whale watching tour ! There is a possibility to see Humpback, Blue and even Orca whales throughout the year and you always stand the chance to enjoy seeing some dolphins basking in their natural habitat.

You could also head inland and maybe visit the wineries in the Carmel Valley or explore the city of Salinas, known to be the hometown of legendary American writer John Steinbeck.

There are lots of options if you have more than one day in Monterey to spend and you’re sure to find something worth doing that will keep you occupied!

Top airline flying from Monterey to San Francisco Bay Area

United Airlines was fantastic, however, UnderPricer was a nightmare. I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight. We are moving to New Zealand so had quite a bit of baggage (16 checked items) and so wanted to have plenty of time to get everything taken care of properly. When I went to check in they (United) could only find a ticket for me. The 5 tickets for my children were never officially ticketed. I called Underpricer and they told me it was United's fault and United told me that Underpricer just needs to reissue the tickets, but they refused to. I asked the Underpricer agent to transfer me to his supervisor as I was not getting the help I needed. He told me the supervisor was busy but that he would call me back in 30 minutes. 30 minutes came and went with no phone call. After an hour I called Underpricer back but they would not let me talk to the person I had talked to before, just told me that he was talking with the supervisor and technical support. I called again an hour later, was told the same thing. I tried again later, with only about 30 minutes until my flight was scheduled to leave (meaning I had been at the airport for more than 3 hours with my 5 children trying to get ticketed and board the flight). Also, my husband had moved to New Zealand 3 months prior, I haven't seen him in 3 months, my children hadn't seen their dad in 3 months, we were all extremely eager to get on that flight and get to New Zealand. The situation with the tickets did not get resolved until after it was too late to check our luggage and board our flight. We were devastated. My 11 year old son was in tears at not being able to be on his way to see his dad. Thankfully we were rebooked for the next evening, but that night it felt devastating. We'd been at the airport for 4 hours waiting. My in-laws waited with me and then helped me reload all our baggage and took us home to stay with them for the night. On the newly booked flights we could not sit together - my children were spread throughout the plane. So, even though I had paid extra to select our seats after buying my seats from Underpricer only two of us were able to sit together (thankful that my 11 year old wasn't all by himself, but not happy that my 14 & 16 year old daughters were seated by strangers). I really feel that Underpricer should refund me what I paid for the seating ($120 USD). It was a very frustrating situation and I plan on never using Kayak or Underpricer ever again.

The lady at the check in counter wasn't helpful

Crew was very cooperative and professional. Passenger's first checked in bag should be free.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

I’ve had a couple flights this week on United that were delayed by an hour or more

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Alex Palou wins at Monterey to take over IndyCar points lead

Alex Palou won the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey by nearly two seconds Sunday in Monterey, Calif., to take over the NTT IndyCar Series championship points lead.

The two-time IndyCar Series champion outpaced Colton Herta by 1.978 seconds at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Alexander Rossi finished in third place 4.5136 seconds back.

The Chip Ganassi Racing team member and native of Spain earned his 12th career win.

"It was a chaotic race, man," Palou said. "Didn't do a really good job on the start, and those restarts at the beginning lost what we've been working so hard in qualifying to get that first position, but (the team) did a tremendous job."

Several collisions and cautions late made things interesting in the end, but Palou maintained his poise in closing out the win after leading for a race-high 48 laps. He leads Will Power by 19 points in the standings with nine races left.

"The strategy was a bit risky for the position we were in, but we knew we had the pace, and we just had to execute, so it was fun.

"Overall an amazing win for the 10 DHL car."

The winding "corkscrew" course limited max speeds, though Palou managed a best-lap time of 1:09.0790.

The drivers got off to an exciting start with Kyle Kirkwood overtaking Palou, the pole position holder, early on. Kirkwood, who ultimately finished fifth (three spots below his starting spot) led for 24 laps.

Romain Grosjean finished in fourth. Herta led for eight laps, while Rossi led for 10. The only other driver to lead was 19th-place finisher Josef Newgarden, who led for five.

7 Small Towns In California That Are Great Alternatives To San Francisco

  • There are a number of alternative destinations to San Francisco, from Capitola to Stinson Beach, many of which are underrated beach towns in California.
  • Los Osos is a hidden gem halfway between SF and LA, offering pristine beaches, hiking trails, and wildlife watching, and makes for one of the many excellent small-town alternatives to San Francisco.
  • Consider smaller towns like Capitola or Castroville as scenic and affordable alternatives to San Francisco's expensive hustle and bustle.

The historical city of San Francisco is a commercial, financial, and cultural center in Northern California and the fourth most populous city in the US . Generally considered an expensive place to visit, San Francisco has a broad range of activities and things to do and many are surprisingly free . From vibrant nightclubs to night tours to exciting shows and more, San Francisco's nightlife is legendary and offers an incomparable experience .

For those staying in or visiting this large and vibrant city, the famous landmarks of San Francisco are unmissable attractions that draw millions each year and make it one of California's most popular tourist destinations.

However, there are smaller towns in California that are great places to visit instead of San Francisco, each with unique features and attractions; some scenic, some historic, and some just plain and simple fun! These small towns in California can be great alternatives to San Francisco for various reasons, making them individually interesting and exciting to visit.

10 Tourist Traps In San Francisco, Plus Alternatives

Los osos, san luis obispo county, known as the valley of the bears, it is the entrance to montaña de oro state park and los padres national forest.

About halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Los Osos is an unincorporated town. It is home to numerous outdoor activities due to its pristine beaches, state parks, estuaries ideal for whale watching or fishing, and plenty of hiking trails perfect for exploration.

With over 8,000 acres, including seven miles of shoreline, Montaña de Oro is one of the largest state parks in California. The park's standout features include rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including the 1,347-foot Valencia Peak.

Wildflowers flourish here in the spring, and tide pools brim with marine life all year round. With its parks and natural beauty, Los Osos is a fantastic alternative to San Francisco's bustling and busy city life. The unique twisted trees of Los Osos Oaks come with a fascinating history and are a must-visit for anyone in the area.

The bear population is centered in the Los Padres National Forest , which is some 10 miles away. The 32-acre Sweet Springs Nature Preserve is another notable natural area in Los Osos. The Los Osos Wildlife Corridor is a natural coastal dune greenbelt surrounding Morro Bay and Los Osos and is designed to preserve, restore, and reconnect the beautiful ecosystem.

Capitola, Santa Cruz County

The oldest beach resort on the west coast and named one of the best beach towns.

The small coastal town of Capitola was named one of the best beach towns by Sunset magazine in 2012, and it's clear it still retains the charm that garnered such esteem all those years ago. What began in 1874 as the humble Camp Capitola and the first beach resort in California transitioned into a magnificent wood-framed Victorian hotel — Hotel Capitola, which rivaled the best in the business. The romance of the original beach resort still exists in the colorful and quaint destination along California's famed Highway 1.

The heart of the town is still along Capitola Beach , which is easily one of the most underrated but scenic beaches in the US ; it offers a breathtaking view of Monterey Bay, neighboring Esplanade Park, and the 855-foot pier, lined with wooden benches for taking in the spectacular views.

With unique shops, galleries, restaurants, and vibrant events like the Capitola Beach Festival and Capitola Art & Wine Festival, the town is a popular destination, attracting visitors year-round. Less than two hours from San Francisco, spending a weekend exploring Capitola's beauty, history, and splendor is a great alternative.

7 Lesser-Known Beach Towns In California

Castroville, monterey county, the artichoke center of the world and home of the castroville artichoke festival.

An unincorporated town about 100 miles south of San Francisco, Castroville is known for its artichoke crop and the annual Castroville Artichoke Festival . Just a few miles inland from Monterey Bay and surrounded by robust fields of artichokes, Castroville offers the best of Monterey Bay with its epic outdoor adventures, abundant farm-to-table dining, renowned wine country, and world-class events.

The Castroville Artichoke Festival includes a first-rate parade, cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, a car show, and many arts and crafts vendors. The small agricultural town and rural setting provide a peaceful atmosphere. The picturesque landscape has rolling hills, lush valleys, and abundant wildlife, and is excellent as an alternative for a day trip from San Francisco.

Safety In San Francisco: Tips For First-Time Visitors

Atherton, san mateo county, the town with the country's highest cost of living is near san francisco.

Known for its exclusivity and wealth, in 1990 and 2019, Atherton had the highest per capita income among places with a population between 2,500 and 9,999. The area covered by its ZIP Code (94027) is regularly ranked as having the highest cost of living in the United States and is also number one on the list of the most expensive towns to retire in California .

An idyllic town on the San Francisco Peninsula , Atherton is a billionaire's dream, sparsely populated with more than enough privacy to keep its luxurious modern homes and grand estates. Executives from Silicon Valley and international billionaires like Google's Eric Schmidt and Microsoft's Paul Allen have mansions in Atherton . Plus, Facebook's Menlo Park Headquarters is in Menlo Park, less than 5 miles from Atherton

With its proximity to San Francisco, Atherton is the perfect alternative and boasts a superb list of activities and attractions for visitors, like Fisherman's Wharf , Alcatraz Island , and the world-famous Chinatown .

Aptos, Santa Cruz County

Home of the historic aptos village and the gateway to the forest of nisene marks state park.

The quaint town of Aptos comprises several small villages - Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley, Aptos Village, Cabrillo, Seacliff, Rio del Mar, and Seascape. Nestled between trees and the ocean, the traditional Aptos village is a pedestrian-friendly town square and provides timeless architecture and small-town charm. The San Andreas Fault Zone passes nearby, and Aptos is home to both the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park and Seacliff State Beach , California state parks.

The Aptos History Museum houses a collection of artifacts and photographs tracing the area's history. Nisene Marks State Park, covering 10,000 acres, is a testament to forest regeneration where second-growth redwoods coexist with new foliage, while Seacliff State Beach is the perfect spot for a cookout or picnic, with barbecue grills and shaded tables along the sand.

Aptos' " World's Shortest Parade " on the morning of the Fourth of July includes nearly every Aptos resident – and pet – dressed in red, white, and blue, and it ends at Aptos Village Par. In short, Aptos is an excellent destination for fun and scenic beauty, and at barely 81 miles from San Francisco, it is a perfect alternative to the big city.

Stinson Beach, Marin County

The white sand and oceanfront make this spot one of the best swimming beaches in northern california.

The coastal town of Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco, is accessible via Highway 1, offering unmatched scenic views of the Pacific Ocean along the way, or the Panoramic Highway, which winds through the redwoods of Muir Woods. People come here to enjoy the beach and the ocean, hike the Dipsea Trail to Steep Ravine , and take in the natural beauty of Mount Tamalpais State Park.

Stinson Beach is about a 35-minute drive from the Golden Gate Bridge and is near important attractions such as Muir Woods National Monument , Muir Beach , and Mount Tamalpais . It has a long beach, and the cold water produces fog throughout the year . Its proximity to San Francisco makes it an excellent alternative to the city, especially for day trips to explore California.

Underrated, But Scenic: This Small Town In California Is A Great Alternative To San Francisco

San simeon, san luis obispo county, hearst castle, an early 20th-century hilltop mansion, is a key attraction.

About halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco , San Simeon is a small town home to Hearst Castle , formerly known as La Cuesta Encantada (Spanish for "The Enchanted Hill"). Hearst Castle is a national historical landmark worth seeing , with decor from all over the world, incredible architecture, and massive rooms that ensure it's on any California bucket list.

Besides the castle's opulence, San Simeon is also a prime beach destination on California's famous Highway 1, a great road trip route for exploring the region's coastal towns . San Simeon beaches are among the most spectacular in California, and that's saying something. The rugged coastline and pristine landscape are an escape from busy city life, and being in San Simeon is a fantastic alternative to San Francisco.

Also, just 7 miles north of San Simeon, the area features a large northern elephant seal rookery , the Piedras Blancas rookery. This popular spot to observe elephant seals has a boardwalk & viewing areas.

Don't believe the doom loop hype: It's a great time to visit San Francisco

Clint Henderson

I'm so sick of hearing how terrible things are in San Francisco.

For the past several years, the media has been on a relentless campaign talking up the problems of the City by the Bay. Outlets from The New York Times to the Financial Times have written stories about how San Francisco is caught up in a "doom loop," where rampant drug use, homelessness and street crime are driving out businesses and residents.

But recent trips suggest to me that the hype is way overblown.

travel from monterey to san francisco

In fact, I'd argue it's actually a great time to visit San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. Flight prices are reasonable from many U.S. hubs, and hotels — especially luxury accommodations — are an outright bargain compared to cities like New York and Miami. Plus, it's not currently crowded with tourists, and San Francisco remains one of America's best cities ... warts and all.

I talked to locals who don't recognize the city as it's portrayed in the mainstream media or say the tales are wildly exaggerated. Plus, I did some on-the-ground reporting in San Francisco and stayed in the city for a few days — my trip reminded me of just how beautiful it remains, and I saw many reasons for hope.

San Francisco is one of the world's great cities

travel from monterey to san francisco

San Francisco is world-famous for good reason. With less than a million residents, the city punches way above its weight. Incredible vistas, great weather and world-class museums make it one of the country's top destinations.

To me, the best tourist attractions are the working cable cars chugging up steep hills, the high-end shopping options around Union Square, the dramatic waterfront with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, where you can see the Transamerica Pyramid peeking over the skyline. These attractions are all within walking distance of each other.

While it's touristy, one of my favorite things to do is check out the seal colony at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39.

The city is also home to the Palace of Fine Arts in the waterfront Marina District, which is always a big hit with the Instagram crowd.

Among the many museums are the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Exploratorium, the Asian Art Museum, the Legion of Honor and the Museum of the African Diaspora. I count at least 42 museums in all.

The sprawling Golden Gate Park spreads over more than a thousand acres in the heart of the city and is home to the de Young Museum, the San Francisco Botanical Garden (which features a Victorian arboretum), the Japanese Tea Garden and the California Academy of Sciences, with its famed aquarium and dinosaur bones. The park ends at the picturesque Ocean Beach. Exploring everything that Golden Gate Park has to offer is a fantastic way to spend a day in San Francisco.

Of course, no visit to the city is complete without photos of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. You can walk across all the way to Marin if you are so inclined — a walk I highly recommend.

San Francisco does have some big problems

"San Francisco has some serious challenges it has to overcome," said Tim Jue, a San Francisco-based aviation and travel reporter. "I see it every day living and working here. Homelessness, public safety, an empty downtown, vacant storefronts and the high cost of living. Those are all issues people in the city are being confronted with."

Indeed, that was the most alarming thing I've seen during my recent trips. Storefronts are vacant across the city, including in the prime shopping area of Union Square.

Even giant stores like Nordstrom have closed down, abandoning a key shopping mall on Market Street.

It was quite a shock when I learned that the Union Square Macy's store where I worked during my 20s is shutting down by the end of 2024.

"But this city has always been about boom and bust, dating back to the gold rush era," said Jue. "San Francisco has perfected itself on reinvention, of incubating economic revolutions, reaping its rewards, and then seeing everything crash and burn. The people of this proud city always find a way to rebuild, and I think we are seeing some progress on that front."

Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research, a travel industry analytical firm, felt similarly to Jue.

"Are we out of the woods yet in San Francisco? No. But we are approaching the edge of the forest," he said. "San Francisco is a big city. Just like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and regardless of where you are, you have to be aware of your surroundings."

As a frequent visitor and onetime resident, I can tell you that some neighborhoods are more likely to have a visible presence of homeless people, including parts of Market Street, the Tenderloin and Civic Center. But that doesn't mean those are no-go zones. Just keep your wits about you.

"I'm not going to tell people to stay away from any neighborhoods," said Harteveldt. Still, he added, "I don't want to come across as elitist. I would encourage people to be aware of their surroundings, especially if they've been drinking."

Harteveldt, who lives in San Francisco, said violent crime is down and added that "the homeless problem does seem to be easing a bit."

Indeed, on a recent visit in April, I was pleasantly surprised to see many fewer homeless people on the streets. Perhaps I was lucky, but homelessness has been a problem all my life in San Francisco. When I lived there in the 1990s, it was already a huge issue.

And despite the city spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the problem, homelessness ticked up 7% in 2024, though street camping has declined substantially. According to KQED , "while the overall total number of homeless people has climbed, the number of people in San Francisco sleeping in tents, cars and RVs — or what's known as 'unsheltered homelessness' — decreased 1% since 2022 and 16% since 2019."

travel from monterey to san francisco

Also, crime is actually down in San Francisco. The city of San Francisco reported that so far this year, "property crime is down 32% and violent crime is down 14% compared to the first quarter of 2023." According to an analysis of police data by the San Francisco Chronicle, "nearly every neighborhood in San Francisco saw less reported crime in the first four months of 2024 compared with the first four months in 2023."

All the changes come as the city implements a newly passed law. Proposition E went into effect in April, giving police officers new technology (like drones) and other new tools (like police cameras) to do their jobs, and changing rules to get more officers out on the street to pursue criminals.

"San Francisco continues to awe the world with our incomparable views, sites and spaces, epic events, amazing culinary offerings, and unique cultural experiences," said Mayor London Breed in a statement to The Points Guy. "I am proud of the economic revitalization and public safety investments we have made to ensure we maintain our City as a prime travel destination for people near and far, with creative and fun attractions to keep bringing visitors back again and again."

Hotels are a relative bargain right now in San Francisco

I priced out a long weekend in August, when San Francisco has relatively cool temperatures, with an average high of around 68 degrees and an average low of 55 degrees (and no rain). Prices are incredibly affordable right now, even in the peak summer travel season.

If you are a World of Hyatt fan, you could stay at one of my favorite hotels in the city, the Grand Hyatt San Francisco, for just $176 a night (including a destination fee of $35 a night). If you want to be closer to the waterfront, consider a stay at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, which prices at just $249 a night, including fees. The Hyatt Regency has been a touchstone in my life since I went to my high school prom there — it's a wonderful hotel. The Regency Club, located on the top floor, has sweeping views of San Francisco and is well worth the splurge.

travel from monterey to san francisco

Another of my favorite hotels in the city is The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square. For that same weekend, you can stay in the heart of the city for $152 a night, including a destination fee of $30 per night.

travel from monterey to san francisco

There are plenty of other Marriott Bonvoy options, including the San Francisco Marriott Marquis for $170 a night, the W San Francisco for $220, the St. Regis for $448 and the Ritz-Carlton for $397.

The iconic Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco on Market Street is less than $200 a night. Or you can stay at the world-famous Fairmont Hotel at the top of Nob Hill for $353 a night.

The Hilton San Francisco Union Square is under $200 a night, and the InterContinental San Francisco is just $188 a night, including $35 in fees. The InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco, another legendary hotel atop Nob Hill, is just $206 a night all-in.

These deals are remarkable. If you've wanted a luxury hotel getaway in a world-class city, now is the time to visit.

"I love San Francisco and have always felt it's one of the best cities in the world," John E. DiScala, Johnny Jet founder and editor-in-chief, said. "It's going to take some time for the city to bounce back to its heyday. But if you want to save money on hotels, this is the time to visit."

There are lots of cheap flights to San Francisco

Flights are numerous and cheap to the San Francisco Bay Area.

I priced that same weekend from various U.S. gateways. You could book that long weekend from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) for less than $200.

travel from monterey to san francisco

If you were coming from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), you could do a weekend for $250. You could fly from Miami International Airport (MIA) for just $179. Coming from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) would cost you only $177.

If ever you've thought of a trip to see San Francisco, now is the time.

There are lots of green shoots in San Francisco

travel from monterey to san francisco

The rise of artificial intelligence is setting off another tech boom in the Bay Area right now. San Francisco has more AI jobs than any other city in America. OpenAI just signed a massive lease in the booming Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco, the largest lease signed in the area in five years. The Washington Post reported that some $18 billion in funding is being poured into San Francisco artificial intelligence and machine learning companies. Some locals are comparing it to the early days of the dot-com era.

There are early signs of a real estate rebound in San Francisco, too.

A developer has recently made a billion-dollar bet on a remodeled Transamerica Pyramid building, the iconic skyscraper in the Embarcadero section of San Francisco. That developer is also planning two new buildings in the area and will unveil upgrades to the adjacent and well-loved Redwood Park.

A snapshot of a day in San Francisco

In April, I spent some time in San Francisco to get some on-the-ground reporting on what it's like there these days. I picked the right few days. The weather was glorious and I didn't see the levels of homelessness that I have seen on other trips over the past few years.

I spent much of one day walking the city, including around Union Square, Chinatown and the waterfront. I never felt unsafe, though that has always been true of my travels there. While panhandlers can sometimes be aggressive, I found very little of that during my most recent trip.

travel from monterey to san francisco

Speaking of Chinatown, the neighborhood has been hosting after-dark night markets, which have been a huge hit. The concept is now spreading to other neighborhoods, like the Sunset District. Sounds fun.

For lunch, I had a bevy of options at food carts set up outside the iconic waterfront Ferry Building. The huge structure is filled with fine dining outlets and shops, and you'll find food stalls set up outside as well.

travel from monterey to san francisco

I stopped by a vendor called Chicken Box for a delicious fried chicken sandwich. The woman working there told me that San Francisco's reputation had taken a hit, but it had similar problems to any big city. We commiserated about how dire a picture the media has painted of the City by the Bay.

As I mentioned, I saw plenty of "for lease" signs but very little "doom."

"Sometimes these doom loop stories create their own weather systems," said Harteveldt. "While SF faces challenges, the city is addressing some of its problems. Summer is among the best times to visit. Hotel prices are much more reasonable. The restaurant scene is vibrant. There are new restaurants opening, which indicates they can find the space they need at the prices that work. And they can find staff. The food scene is one of the city's shining stars."

Bottom line

travel from monterey to san francisco

"We have a long way to go, but I'm reminded that right before the pandemic, San Francisco was the envy of the world," said journalist Tim Jue. "All the world's airlines wanted to fly to SFO because they saw tremendous prosperity and opportunity. This is a city worth seeing and saving."

As a former resident and frequent visitor, I couldn't agree more. Now is one of the best times in my lifetime to visit — you can score a cheap flight, there are great hotel options for under $200 a night, and you don't have to deal with crowds.

Don't believe the doom loop hype.
