Allison de Groot + Tatiana Hargreaves at The Ruins

Wednesday, May 29, 2024

6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Artist:   Allison de Groot  +  Tatiana Hargreaves

Venue: The Ruins

On clawhammer banjo, Allison de Groot has become a significant voice in the North American traditional, Americana and roots music scenes. Her style is adventurous and grounded, and No Depression writes it “transports the listener to a different plane” . Starting out on banjo in her hometown of Winnipeg, MB, Allison’s grown into a career of exciting collaborations and continued musical exploration. She has performed and recorded alongside some of the most renowned traditional musicians in North American and Europe and was nominated by the Americana Music Association for 2023 ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’.

Collaboration is at the centre of Allison's music. Her duo with fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves has been described by Bandcamp Daily as “one living, breathing organism” . Allison and Tatiana create a sound that is adventurous, masterful, and original. They expand on the eccentricities of old songs, while never losing sight of what makes them endure. Their latest release ‘Hurricane Clarice’ won two Canadian Folk Music Awards and was nominated for ‘Traditional Album of the Year’ at the Juno Awards.

Alongside bandmates Tatiana Hargreaves, percussive dancer Nic Gareiss and legendary fiddler Bruce Molsky, Allison has performed at festivals such as Newport Folk Festival, Pickathon, Red Wing Roots, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Hardly Strictly and Celtic Connections. For a second year in a row, Allison and Tatiana are working in the Celtic Connections Transatlantic Sessions house band led by Jerry Douglas.

Over the past decade, Tatiana Hargreaves has been on the forefront of an up and coming generation of old time, bluegrass and new acoustic musicians. From placing first at the Clifftop Appalachian Fiddle Contest, to her bluegrass fiddling on Laurie Lewis’ GRAMMY-nominated album The Hazel And Alice Sessions , Hargreaves shows a musical fluency that flows between old time and bluegrass worlds with ease. She has toured with musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky and Jake Blount. She currently tours with banjo extraordinaire Allison de Groot and teaches bluegrass fiddle at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Tatiana’s duo with Allison de Groot has been described as a “can’t-miss pair in 2019,” by Paste Magazine, and their rendition of Alice Gerrard’s song “Beaufort County Jail” was included in Rolling Stone Country’s “10 Best Country and Americana Songs to Hear.” Their album on Free Dirt Records is a powerful opening statement and “dives deep into the old-time style and comes up with something wonderfully fresh” (Vinyl District). De Groot & Hargreaves create a sound that is adventurous, masterful, and original, as they expand on the eccentricities of old songs, while never losing sight of what makes them endure. The duo not only showcases impressive musicianship, but reflects on which voices we seek to hear as we explore the expansive, diverse canon of American roots music. Their self-titled album released in 2019 was nominated for IBMA Liner Notes of the Year.

Tatiana’s band “Hard Drive” features Sonya Badigian, Aaron Tacke and Nokosee Fields and incorporates a combination of old-time, bluegrass and Texas fiddle repertoire. From brother duets to raging fiddle tunes, Hard Drive brings a sense of deep intuition and silliness to the world that encompasses old-time, country, and bluegrass. The Bluegrass Situation described the band as “a delightful subversion of our expectations of what traditional bluegrass is supposed to be.”

Show time: 7:30

Over a year after Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz of Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) reintroduced themselves on their 2021 self-titled LP, the pair shared a special surprise release:  Watchhouse (Duo) , a self-produced recording of Marlin and Frantz performing the most elemental possible arrangements of all nine songs from  Watchhouse . It’s a project that captures the fundamental power of Watchhouse: Two singers and musicians with profound chemistry, performing earnest yet masterfully crafted songs that encompass the unknowable mysteries, existential heartbreak, and communal joys of modern life.

Starting over a decade ago playing coffee shops and local restaurants around North Carolina, Watchhouse is a grassroots success story that’s been driven by Marlin’s poignant songwriting. They’ve sold out iconic venues (Red Rocks, Ryman Auditorium) and attract hundreds of millions of streams while producing exploratory music that “redefines roots music for a younger generation” (Washington Post).

2022 was filled with many endeavors including the  American Acoustic Tour  with  Punch Brothers , headlining shows across the US, collaborating with Planet Bluegrass on  Mabon , an autumn equinox concert series, and of course  Watchhouse (Duo) . In 2023, Marlin and Frantz will celebrate the release of  Watchhouse (Duo)  with a short run of shows that will feature just the two of them, harkening back to their earliest days of performing.

Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves (2023)

Adventurous, accomplished american folk & roots music, thanks to everyone who came out to see this sensational duo.

Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves are both leading lights in the younger generation of roots musicians. They’re appearing this February on the Transatlantic Sessions live tour, which tells you all you need to know about their exceptional talents and reputation on the roots music scene. Together, Allison and Tatiana create a sound that’s adventurous, masterful and original, whilst still paying homage to the best of Appalachian traditions.

Renowned Canadian clawhammer banjoist Allison de Groot is also celebrated for her peerless musicianship as a member of Molsky’s Mountain Drifters and in her duo with step dancer Nic Gareiss. Originally from Winnipeg, Allison gained a performance degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music and has toured all over the world with her various projects.  Phenomenal American fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves is known for her mastery of multiple fiddle styles including bluegrass, old time, folk and country, and has performed and recorded with luminaries including Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, Bruce Molsky and Jake Blount. Tatiana also played on the Grammy-nominated Laurie Lewis album The Hazel And Alice Sessions, and released her own solo original instrumental suite Soledad in 2021.  The duo’s 2019 debut album showcased their hugely impressive musicianship and reflected on the expansive, diverse canon of American roots music. It garnered glowing reviews, including from Rolling Stone and Folk Radio UK , and won “Best Bluegrass Album”  from the Independent Music Awards.

Allison and Tatiana’s second album, 2022’s Hurricane Clarice, sees the two musicians exploring more personal influences and themes, and showcases Allison and Tatiana at the height of their powers. The repertoire on this latest release comes from field recordings, old hymns, and LPs, and also from modern literary sources and original compositions; a delightful mix of the old and the new which appeared in many end-of-year “best music of 2022” lists. For Allison and Tatiana, traditional music is a way to interpret our uncertain times, and draw artistic inspiration and power from the sources of meaning in their lives. In concert, Allison and Tatiana create compelling performances that take the banjo and fiddle duet to another level. We ca n’t wait to welcome this sensational duo back for their own headline tour of the UK this May!

Tickets are out now for Allison & Tatiana’s May 2023 UK tour – see links above.

tatiana hargreaves tour

Tatiana Hargreaves winces at the word “prodigy,” though it’s a tempting one to apply. At 27 years old, the Durham resident has already achieved a lifetime of accomplishments: expert fiddle player, prolific recording artist, lecturer in UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Music, celebrated documentarian of old-time music.

It’s also easy to view Hargreaves through the lens of her childhood accolades. She followed in the footsteps of her older brother Alex by picking up the fiddle at the age of three, and at seven, she blew minds at music camps in her native Oregon. At 13, she became the youngest person to win the Oregon Old-Time Fiddlers Contest—and just the second woman to win Open Fiddle at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia, at the age of 14.

“It’s really cool that the bluegrass and old-time music community is so multigenerational, but the obsession with children who can play well is kind of bizarre,” Hargreaves tells INDY Week over coffee and pastries at Monuts one recent hot August afternoon. “I’m grateful that people have supported me since a really young age. That’s shaped my career. But it’s also made me uncomfortable. There’s this pressure to always stand out: ‘You’re a kid, and you’re so good, so what are you going to do next?’”

Perhaps that’s the driving force behind Hargreaves’s impressive résumé. She’s earned a bachelor’s degree in ethnomusicology and is one year away from finishing a master’s in library science. She’s aced fiery Texas fiddle, learned Cuban violin in Havana, and studied free improvisation with Indian and Pakistani musicians. She’s written four-movement suites based on literary classics and logged long hours at UNC’s Southern Folklife Collection. She’s digitized the extensive archive of living legend Alice Gerrard and even expanded into producing the records of other roots musicians.

None of it was possible, Hargreaves says, until she left her Oregon home—and her history—behind. Heading east, she landed first at Hampshire College in Massachusetts before moving to Durham in 2017 to study and work with Gerrard.

“When I moved here, I didn’t really know anyone besides Alice,” Hargreaves says. “I loved that—I didn’t have anyone expecting things from me. I was able to be myself in a way I’d never been before.”

That self is defined first by fiddle excellence. Whether backing Bay Area icon Laurie Lewis in her The Right Hands band, leading local collective Hard Drive, or locking in with Canadian banjoist Allison de Groot, Hargreaves’s instrumental chops are evident as soon as bow meets string. She can scream through traditional tunes (“49 Cats in a Rain Barrel”), bend uncanny notes into haunting combinations (“Farewell Whiskey”), or evoke lost American landscapes (“Rolling River”)—wowing casual fans and fiddle nerds alike.

Gerrard says she immediately recognized a kindred spirit in Hargreaves, even though they’re separated by 60 years in age.

“I first met Tatiana when she was 15, and I loved her fiddle playing,” Gerrard says. “But what I really admire is that she’s a traditionalist in many ways. We both like to keep one foot in the music itself and one foot in the story surrounding that music. That’s a huge part of our connection. At this point, I feel like she’s part of my family.”

Familial themes course through Hurricane Clarice , Hargreaves’s second full-length album with de Groot, which was released in March of this year. Full of her trademark “shit-hot fiddle” (as eloquently described by The Bluegrass Situation ), the concise nine-song record also reveals a more personal side of each musician, mixing audio recordings of their grandmothers with songs about polluted rivers, surrealist authors, Black fiddlers, and supposed witches.

“Allison and I really click,” Hargreaves says. “It’s easy to immediately sync up with each other—I’ve never experienced that with anyone else in a duo setting.”

The two worked on Hurricane Clarice with Triangle-based producer Phil Cook, who, over Zoom, encouraged them to be vulnerable.

“Phil gave us mostly emotional support,” Hargreaves laughs. “He said, ‘Once you’re in the studio, I completely trust you—just go in there and play.’ That’s exactly what we needed to hear. It was my favorite recording experience ever.”

“ Hurricane Clarice is a remarkable example of the passionate landscape that can exist between two people,” Cook says. “I feel like I’m riding out a storm on the ocean or looking out over the Grand Canyon when I listen to the album; the expansiveness of it humbles me so much.”

The release of Hurricane Clarice also humbled Hargreaves, who was thankful to return to regular touring but also struggled with inevitable comedowns each time she returned home.

“It was the crash of everything you were avoiding on tour,” she says. “All the emotions, all the tasks, the lack of stimulation.”

For now, though, her studies, her ongoing partnership with Gerrard, and her work at the Southern Folklife Collection serve as a counterweight.

“I want to have more balance,” she says. “I find school and the archive work to be emotionally regulating. It’s nice to have something reliable—and someone telling me what to do.”

Hargreaves’s studies have also broadened how she teaches others. “When people come to me to study, they often have a very specific idea about what fiddle music or bluegrass means,” she says. “The biggest part of my studies is wanting to make it easier for people to find stuff on their own.”

That endless discovery extends to every part of Hargreaves’s career. After making her production debut on Daniel Ullom’s recent release The Swannanoa Sessions and helping Alice Gerrard record her forthcoming album—the folk legend’s first in a decade—Hargreaves has big ideas for what she wants to do next: A “Tati Plays Tex” tribute album to fiddler and audio savant Tex Logan and a new recording for Hard Drive , the freewheeling “authentic millennial bluegrass collective” she formed in 2018 with roommates Sonya Badigian, Aaron Tacke, and Nokosee Fields after a spontaneous, wine-fueled six a.m. jam session.

“Tatiana is super busy,” Gerrard says. “She’s smart, she’s grounded, and she excels at everything she does. I just don’t see how she fits it all into her day.”

Hargreaves admits to struggling with more than just a packed calendar. She bristles at the sexist comments she often hears about her full-throated singing—“Like, ‘Wow, how do you get such a big sound out of your little body?’”

She likens it to the “shock factor” sentiments she experienced as a kid. “It’s not about what you’re saying or playing or doing,” she says. “I’ve faced that a lot as a woman in the music industry. People are constantly surprised at what I can do—and that continuously pisses me off.”

“A lot of people still see Tatiana as this child,” he says. “To outgrow an identity that’s been placed upon her—in a genre that hangs its hat on virtuosity and technical prowess—is very impressive. She’s putting out her truth as she is now. To me, there’s no more soulful fiddler in North Carolina.”

Of course, Hargreaves would defer such praise. She admits to a lifelong sense of “little sister” inferiority—literally playing second fiddle to her older brother Alex, a fellow savant who currently backs bluegrass sensation Billy Strings.

“My brother is one of my best friends and biggest inspirations, but it’s definitely intimidating to have him as a sibling,” she says. “I still feel overshadowed by him.”

“He’s always playing in other people’s bands. Everyone wants him, and I think he’s envious that I do my own thing and have more of my own projects. We have our different lanes.”

Invigorated, she goes further: “I feel very comfortable playing fiddle. I love playing fiddle. I’ve dedicated 25 years of my life to the fiddle.” With a sneaky smile, her humility—her sense of having her feet planted firmly on the right ground as she excavates it for inspiration and education—returns: “And I still don’t know anything.”

Mama’s Broke and Allison de Groot + Tatiana Hargreaves

**Mama’s Broke and Allison de Groot + Tatiana Hargreaves live at Eddie’s Attic!**

*Mama’s Broke*

Mama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply, with close harmony duets, commanding vocals, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life, whether or not we ever choose to settle down.

For a group defined by constant touring, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada, the United States, Ireland, the UK, and Europe. In each country, they built grassroots DIY communities to support their music or moved along the pathways of communal organizing that sustained other touring artists.

The driving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitment to challenge borders between people, places, and traditions; while encouraging freedom of expression and community through music.

*Allison de Groot + Tatiana Hargreaves*

Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves have been described as “one living, breathing organism”(Bandcamp Daily), with their music “transform[ing] the listener to a different plane” (No Depression). Their sound together captivates listeners through intricate and interactive dynamics between the banjo and the fiddle. They are individually recognized as leaders in the young generation of roots musicians, de Groot being known for intricate clawhammer banjo work with Bruce Molsky, and Hargreaves bringing powerhouse fiddling to the stage with Laurie Lewis and David Rawlings in addition to teaching bluegrass fiddle at UNC-Chapel Hill. The duo’s 2022 sophomore album, Hurricane Clarice reflects history, family, literature, live performance, and environmental instability in the sounds, feelings, and sensations that permeate their music. The album won “Best Instrumental Group of the Year” and “Best Traditional Album of the Year” from the Canadian Folk Music Awards and also received a Juno nomination for “Traditional Roots Album of the Year.”

Their first self-titled album released in 2019 garnered attention from CBC Q, Paste Magazine and Rolling Stone Country, earning the duo the Independent Music Awards “Best Bluegrass Album” and a nomination from IBMA for “Best Liner Notes of the Year.” The duo has performed at festivals and venues such as Newport Folk Festival, Savannah Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC, and Red Wing Roots Music Festival. Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves create a sound that is adventurous, masterful, and original, as they expand on the eccentricities of old songs, while never losing sight of what makes them endure.

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

The Trans-Siberian Express is the longest train journey in the world. The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.
