Hop-on Hop-off Buses in Rome

Enjoy 360° views of the Eternal City from the comfort of a bus.

Spend up to three days hopping around Rome on one of the city’s double-decker sightseeing buses. Below is a complete guide to the five different tour bus companies that operate in Rome, so you can find out exactly which option is the best one for you.

What Is A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

A Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour (ho-ho for short) is a great way to explore a new destination, especially a city as historical and jam-packed full of attractions such as Rome. Ho-Ho bus tours enable you to get on or off their buses as many times as you please and at any of the stops along their routes for the duration of your ticket – which can last up to 72 hours.

The buses follow a looped circuit with stops at many major tourist attractions. Most of them also provide free wifi on the buses, a complimentary app, multi-language assistants, and audio commentary providing information about the history of the sites and landmarks you’ll see.

With five different tour companies to choose from – each offering various ticket options – it can be hard to know which one to pick. To make that choice more manageable, we’ve put together a detailed guide that explains and compares the different tickets so that you can spend more time sightseeing and less time planning.

Big Bus Tours Rome

Big Bus Tours is the largest operator of open-top sightseeing tours and is one of the more popular bus tour operators in Rome. They offer three different ticket options with adult, child (5-15 years of age), and family (2 adults & 2 children) prices for each: the Classic (24 hours), Premium (48 hours), and Deluxe (72 hours). They also provide combo experiences – Classic tickets with entrance to either the Vatican Museums or the Colosseum.

To redeem your ticket, simply show your printed ticket or e-voucher to a staff member aboard the bus. Onboard you’ll be able to enjoy free wifi, and you’ll be provided with complimentary headphones to listen to the informative pre-recorded commentary about the sites of Rome in one of nine different languages.

To make your journey even smoother, don’t forget to download the free mobile app that comes with detailed maps, directions to your nearest Big Bus stop, and real-time tracking of the buses.

Each ticket also comes with four digitally-guided walking tours in a variety of languages that you can download onto your smartphone and enjoy at your own leisure.

The buses operate from 9:00 am to 6:40 pm and run every 13 minutes. The duration of the tour is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Route Info:

The bus has eight stops within reach of around 40 unmissable Roman landmarks and attractions. You can hop on or off at any of these stops for the duration of your ticket. The stops are:

  • Termini Railway Station
  • Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore
  • Circus Maximus
  • Piazza Venezia
  • Vatican City
  • Trevi Fountain / Spanish Steps
  • Piazza Barberini

Green Line Tours

Enjoy panoramic views of Rome from the open-top double-decker Green Line bus. Though quite a similar experience to the Big Bus Tours, Green Line has more flexible ticket options, offering a Daily Ticket (allows you as many rides as you want during one day, morning to evening) and a 3 Pass Ticket (allows you to get on and off at three different stops of your choice over the course of one day) as well as the usual 24, 48, and 72 hours tickets.

They also offer a reduced price for youths (13-20 years of age), with children under 12 going free.

Once you’ve booked your ticket, you can present it aboard the bus in either printed or e-voucher format. Each bus is equipped with free wifi, single-use earphones to listen to the audio guides available in 13 different languages, and a multilingual assistant who can answer your questions.

Included in the ticket is a map of the city of Rome and a free app that you can use to monitor your route and learn more about selected points of interest.

Buses run between 9:00 am to 6:30 pm every 10-30 minutes. A complete loop takes approximately one hour and a half.

There are eight stops included in one loop. All of them are close to major sites and attractions.

  • Villa Borghese

Gray Line I Love Rome

Gray Line buses are hard to miss because of their hot pink color. They offer the standard 24, 48, and 72-hour tickets, but they also have a selection of cheaper, single-day tickets. They have a choice between a Daily ticket (valid for one day of travel selected at the time of booking – discounted in the afternoon); a 5-hour ticket (valid for 5 hours from first use); and a One Run ticket (valid for one entire bus run, no hop-offs – discounted in the afternoon).

Children between 6 and 11 pay a reduced price.

You can enjoy free wifi onboard, a pre-recorded audio guide available in 13 different languages, and a detailed route map. Both printed tickets and e-vouchers are accepted. Walking tours are available from stops 4, 5, and 6. If you’re interested, ask a staff member on board to reserve you a spot.

Buses run between 8:30 am to 6:50 pm every 15-20 minutes. An entire run takes approximately one hour and a half.

Like its competitors, Gray Line also stops at eight major tourist hotspots.

  • Circus Maximus & Mouth of Truth
  • Vatican City & Castel Sant’Angelo
  • Spanish Steps
  • Piazza Barberini & Trevi Fountain

City Sightseeing Roma

City Sightseeing tours are famous worldwide. Their buses have the most ‘classic’ look: red double-decker, and in Rome, decorated with famous Roman sites. They offer Classic (24 hours), Premium (48 hours), and Deluxe (72 hours) tickets that can be used on both the City Sightseeing and Big Bus Tours buses when purchased on their website.

Children (between 5 and 15) pay a reduced price, and they also have a family ticket (2 adults, 2 kids) option available.

Your ticket gives you access to free wifi onboard the bus and an audioguide available in 8 different languages. Don’t forget to download the nifty app that comes with an interactive map featuring real-time updates about the location of the buses. It also contains a digitally-guided walking tour of the city center in 5 languages.

Buses run from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm every 10-30 minutes. An entire run takes approximately one hour and a half.

  • Piazza di Spagna

Vatican & Rome Open Bus Service

This bus tour operator offers the most unique route out of the five, its focus being on religious sites. It’s run by the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, a branch of the Vicariate of Rome. Their buses are bright yellow, a color representing the Vatican.

They offer five different ticket options: Daily tickets, 24h, 48h, 72h tickets, or a One Round ticket (non-stop panoramic tour, no hop-offs). Children between the ages of 6 to 17 enjoy a reduced price. An app where you can download your tickets is also available.

Each bus is staffed with multilingual assistants, has free wifi, and provides an audioguide available in eight languages. This bus is also unique because stops scheduled along the itinerary will be on request.

The buses operate from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and run every 45 minutes. The duration of the tour is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

This tour contains 14 different stops, though some are quite close together.

  • Vatican City – Castel Sant’Angelo
  • San Giovanni dei Fiorentini
  • Santa Agnese in Agone – Piazza Navona
  • Torre Argentina
  • Santa Maria in Ara Coeli
  • Santi Apostoli
  • Santa Maria degli Angeli
  • Termini Station
  • Santa Maria Maggiore
  • San Giovanni in Laterano
  • Colosseum – San Gregorio al Celio
  • Circus Maximus – Santa Sabina all’Aventino
  • Teatro Marcello – Santa Maria in Campitelli
  • Largo Argentina – Santa Maria ad Martyres

All the tour operators, with the exception of Vatican and Rome Open Bus Service, offer very similar bus routes. They follow similar circuits of the historic center and stop near or at most of the major tourist hotspots, including the Colosseum , Vatican City , Circus Maximus , and the Spanish Steps / Trevi Fountain .

The Vatican and Rome Open Bus Service also stops at many major sites, but its main focus is on churches and other religious sites. It’s also the only tour operator that goes to San Giovanni in Laterano Basilica , south of the city center. However, it doesn’t stop at either Piazza di Spagna or the Trevi Fountain.

Most of the buses operate from approximately 9 am to around 6:30-7:00 at night, and run every 10-30 minutes. The Vatican & Rome buses have a shorter schedule, running from 10 am to 4 pm every 45 minutes. Each route takes roughly one hour and a half to complete the entire circuit.

The main stops are at Termini station and the Vatican, which is where most of the operators have staff and their offices.

Customer Reviews

Matt murray.

Great value and no issues getting on the bus, audio guide also very informative. Would recommend.

Sharon Jordan

The bus loop took much longer than expected, with stops of up to 10 minutes each time. Not great when you have limited time to see a city.

Rome hop-on hop-off tour buses have several operators with different prices but similar routes. The 24-hour ticket costs from 20 to 30 euros per person. Moreover, any Rome City Passes allow the use of buses free of admission. This is one of the best options to enjoy the sightseeing tour in the Eternal City by visiting the main sites while listening to the audio commentary in one of the open-top buses.

Isango Company provides Hop-On Hop-Off buses across 300+ destinations with more than 10 thousand experiences.

Tickets for Hop-on Hop-off Bus Rome

Moreover, Isango assures its clients that they choose the right experience in any chosen city. According to the reviews from the clients, hop-on hop-off bus operators help explore the city in a short period. For example, talking about Rome, the route of buses is excellent, and they actively pass through the city’s historical center, but since buses are big and some streets are tiny, they do not go to several sites like the Pantheon . However, there is a short walking distance from the tour bus stops to the most famous monuments, fountains, and squares of the Eternal City .

Rome Tour Buses

Rome hop-on hop-off tour offers open-top buses for a better city sightseeing experience. You can choose a seat on the double-decker tour bus and listen to the audio commentary offered in at least 6 languages. There are several kinds of tickets: for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Moreover, special offers include a tour bus ticket + entry to the Vatican , Sistine Chapel , Roman Forum , Colosseum , and more. Overall, there are eight-nine stops. The price on average is from 20 to 30 euros per 24-hour ticket.

The ultimate guide to bus tours in rome.

Bus tours in Rome are popular amongst first-time visitors and seasoned travelers to discover the Eternal City’s most iconic landmarks. With access to strategically planned routes, multilingual audio guides, and local hotspots, you also get to eliminate the hassle of navigating public transportation and walking long distances.

Types of bus tours in Rome

Bus tours offer a perfect blend of comfort, education and adventure. There are different types of bus tours that you can choose while planning your Roman itinerary:

Hop-on Hop-off tours

A flexible option, you can hop off the bus at any designated stop and simply hop back onto the next bus. Passing by key attractions like the Colosseum, Vatican City, Spanish Steps, and Pantheon, common ticket choices include the 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour passes. Typically operating on continuous loops, a Rome Hop-on Hop-off bus tour full circuit can take about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Guided tours

Upgrade your visits with guided tours, where local experts will spark your curiosity through anecdotal insights and lesser-known facts. Allowing for an intimate expedition, these tours are often conducted in small groups and may last between 3 to 4 hours, depending on the itinerary and stops included. The guided tour of Catacombs with Capuchin Crypt entry is a top choice.

Night tours

For a one-of-a-kind experience, soak in Rome’s beauty under the glow of its illuminated monuments. Enjoy an unobstructed and serene view of the iconic Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Piazza Navona. These night tours are a great choice for couples or anyone seeking a peaceful escape.

Day trips can offer a fresh contrast to the hustle and bustle of Rome. Whether you’re drawn to ancient ruins, medieval towns, or natural scenery, there's a destination to suit every interest. The Renaissance architecture of Florence, archaeological site of Pompeii, Tivoli’s thermal springs and authentic Neapolitan pizza at Naples make for some great daytime adventures.

Top bus tour operators in Rome

Each bus tour operator in Rome features different routes, experiences, and ticket options, allowing visitors to explore the Eternal City based on their travel itineraries and varied interests:

With open-top double-decker buses, free Wi-Fi and pre-recorded commentary onboard, Big Bus is one of the leading operators in Rome. They primarily focus on the Red Route (8 stops) and Purple Route (7 stops) . Given its popularity, the Red Route buses operate from 9am to 7pm, every 15 minutes.

I Love Rome

With special audio guides available for children, climb aboard their pink double-decker buses that run every 10-15 minutes . The Pink Route gives a broad overview of Rome’s top attractions.

City Sightseeing

Along with complimentary Wi-Fi and an audio guide in 8 languages, you can access various walking tours on the City Sightseeing app. If you’re traveling from June to October, their 72-hour pass also includes a free night tour .

Get access to 3 different routes: Green Route (popular sights), Orange Route (local food markets) Blue Route (museums & art galleries); and 15 stops all at once. Choose any of their flexible passes and experience the city from a new perspective.

Tips for your Rome bus tours

Make the most of your time in Rome by following these helpful tips:

  • Dress comfortably: Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes, as there is a significant amount of walking involved across monuments. Ensure your shoulders, back, and knees are covered while visiting religious sites.
  • Charge your batteries: This works on 2 levels: keep your camera, smartphone & energy levels recharged at all times for an unforgettable experience. Carry a water bottle and refill it at public drinking fountains scattered throughout the city.
  • Beware of pickpockets: As is the case with any major destination, keep an eye on your belongings amidst crowds and on public transportation. If you have a backpack, wear it on the front in crowded areas.
  • Early-bird tickets: Save on time and money by booking your tickets at least 4-6 weeks in advance. Opt for flexible tickets in case your travel plans change.
  • Offbeat experiences: Make sure you check out Rome’s novel experiences like the Panoramic Night Bus Tour and Hop-on Hop-off Boat Tour.

Rome Buses

  • Public Transport

Rome has currently over 350 bus lines and it can sometimes be a bit confusing to find the right bus. Find out the main bus lines in Rome, their schedules and frequencies and tips to help you get around the city on this type of public transport.

Since the metro lines of Rome are rather limited, visitors will most likely need the bus public transport system to get to certain parts of the city. It may not be the most comfortable or punctual form of transportation . Nevertheless, to get to certain monuments and museums it is essential to use the bus .

Currently, Rome has 338 bus lines that run throughout the day, 22 night buses and 8,260 stops . While the size is impressive based on the numbers alone, delays and long waits are also worth mentioning as quite common occurrences.

Presently, Rome has introduced a fleet of electric vehicles .

Types of buses

In Rome there are various types of lines, these are the most popular:

  • Urban lines (U) : The large majority. They start between 5 am and 6:30 am and finish at midnight. It's important to note that the frequency varies.
  • Night buses (N) : These lines operate while the urban lines "rest", that is to say, between midnight and 5:00-6:00 am. They operate with very little frequency but are very punctual.
  • Express (X) : These lines are for the outskirts of Rome, for longer journeys.
  • Exact (E) : These lines link the centre with the surrounding neighbourhoods. They run on fixed timetables.

How to catch a bus?

Are the bus lines in Rome the most complex in Europe? They might just be. Fortunately, each stop provides detailed information about the bus lines that serve it.

This includes the route, operating days, and the schedule for the first and last buses. While this information seems straightforward, the reality on the ground can be different. When you've been waiting for half an hour without seeing a bus, you'll understand the challenge.

Luckily, many bus stops are being upgraded with electronic displays showing the time until the next bus arrives. Buses also transmit their location to dispatchers, who notify passengers in three different ways

  • In arrivo : the bus is arriving
  • 3 Fer 2' : 3 stops away (fermate), arriving in 2 minutes
  • A capolinea : the bus is at the first stop along its route

Where to buy a bus ticket?

Bus tickets can be bought in any metro station, newsstand or convenience store . If you are planning on using the bus regularly, we recommend you buy a few at a time or get a travel card , which might be a better option.

Always validate your ticket

Although at first you may think that everyone sneaks on the buses, the reason no one validates the ticket is because they have monthly passes. Remember that you can enter through any door, but don't forget to insert the ticket in the machines or you may be fined even if you have the ticket .

Vice President Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, are back on their campaign bus. The pair are together on the campaign trail for the first time since last week’s Democratic convention. This time, they’re on a two-day bus tour of Georgia.

Their trip is taking them into areas of the state that don’t always get attention from Democratic politicians. It will also be the site of Harris’ first major network interview since becoming her party’s nominee for president, on Thursday.

The attention this week is just the latest sign that Georgia, a state President Biden narrowly won in 2020, is once again in play this election year.

Upon arrival in Savannah, Harris and Walz greeted students from Savannah State University, the oldest public HBCU in Georgia, before boarding their campaign bus.

Their first stop on Wednesday was to a marching band rehearsal at Liberty County High School, which, according to U.S. News and World Report, has about 1,000 students, a majority of them “economically disadvantaged.”

The room erupted when Harris and Walz walked in, and the band played the school fight song with football players and cheerleaders in the back of the room. Leaning into his experience as a former coach, Walz gave a quick speech about teamwork. Harris told the crowd they were all leaders in their own way.

Next stop: Sandfly Bar-B-Q in Savannah, a restaurant decorated with license plates from various states. Harris and Walz were greeted by the restaurant's owner, employees and local patrons. Walz sought out a group of teachers and praised their “noble” work. He talked about the importance of optimism and insisted, “Our politics can be hopeful.” Outside, a man held a Trump flag.

“This area is a priority for the campaign: we have nearly 50 full-time staff across 7 offices in South Georgia,” said Porsha White, the Georgia state director for the Harris campaign, ahead of the trip. “This will be the first time a general election presidential candidate will have campaigned in Savannah since the 1990s.”

Cartogram showing squares for each of the U.S. states, sized according to the number of electoral votes that the state has, and colored by the forecasted winner of the presidential election in that state. Harris is forecasted to win 226 votes, Trump is forecasted to win 219 votes, and 93 votes are toss ups.

Harris’ momentum continues as she ties with Trump in these swing states

It’s part of a broader strategy to reach voters in traditionally republican areas in swing states.

Savannah — like most major cities — votes strongly Democratic. But it is swimming in a sea of red — and that’s where Harris and Walz are campaigning.

“The whole point is to overperform,” said Emory University political scientist Andra Gillespie. “And so you want to overperform not just among your base, but you also want to overperform in places where you have historically been weak.”

That means campaigning far from the Democratic strongholds of Atlanta, Philadelphia and Charlotte, N.C., to narrow the margins in parts of those competitive swing states that have typically voted Republican. In other words, losing by less.

In Georgia, where reliably Republican voters still outnumber reliably Democratic ones, that’s really the only way to have a chance at winning.

“Democrats also want to perform better than they historically have in other parts of the state, so you want to be able to post stronger margins — even if they are losing margins — in other parts of the state,” Gillespie said.

In presidential races, there are two big indicators of how campaigns are feeling about their chances in a state: time and money. Since Harris got into the race, Trump and his allies have spent nearly $33 million on ads in the state, mostly trying to define Harris with pretty negative messaging. Meanwhile Harris and her allies have spent nearly $23 million, mostly on more positive ads introducing her to voters. That’s according to an NPR analysis of data from the tracking firm Ad Impact. People watching TV in Georgia are seeing a ton of campaign ads already.

Today, the Harris campaign launched its first “contrast” ad , hitting Trump and tying him to the unpopular conservative roadmap known as Project 2025 . That will be on heavy rotation in Georgia and other swing states.

The Harris campaign has invested in 24 offices around Georgia, including in more traditionally Republican areas. Since Harris started running for president, White says they’ve brought in 35,000 new volunteers.

This photo shows former President Donald Trump standing at a lectern and speaking into a microphone. A large screen above him says

As Harris inches ahead, the cavalry comes to Trump's aid on the airwaves

As for time: Trump held a rally in Georgia earlier this month — though he spent part of his speech bashing the state’s Republican governor. (Trump has since made a public show of saying they’ve worked things out). This week’s bus tour is Harris’ second trip to the state in less than a month.

Polling averages show the race remains close — and it’s much closer with Harris at the top of the ticket than when Biden was the presumptive nominee . Biden won by fewer than 12,000 votes. But the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators are proof that a democrat can win if they run a near perfect campaign.

The Trump campaign will also be turning up the heat in the state this week in an effort to win it back. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene plans to head to a volunteer phone bank in Rome, Ga. In a release she cites “dozens of paid staff, thousands of volunteers, and field offices in every part of the state, from Atlanta to Savannah to the Valdosta. Team Trump will not leave a stone unturned this fall.”

For Trump, Georgia is a must-win state. For Harris, it would open up additional paths to the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Harris and Walz will take a pitstop in Georgia to do an interview

As Harris and Walz meet voters in person, they are also set to sit down for their first television interview together. CNN’s Dana Bash will interview them, and it will air Thursday night.

Supporters carry signs as Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Harris speaks during the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 22 in Chicago.

Harris needs Gen Z. Here's her plan to win them

For the entirety of Harris’ nascent candidacy, she has been in a position to control the message, and she has largely delivered prepared remarks from teleprompter. The interview is, of course, a different format, where she is likely to be pressed on areas where her position has changed since the Democratic primary in 2020, when she supported some version of Medicare for All, opposed fracking and didn’t have as hard of a line on immigration and border security as she does now.

She won’t be alone. Walz will also be part of the interview, which means there likely will be some questions about their relationship and how they would work together — questions that by their nature are not as perilous as trying to explain policy shifts.

The Trump campaign has been publicly badgering Harris to do an interview, in part because they are looking for something to pounce on where they can actually get some traction. They have been trying unsuccessfully for five weeks to end her campaign honeymoon and make some attacks stick, and this interview is the best chance they’ve had in a while.

Already, Trump’s running mate JD Vance is criticizing Harris and Walz for doing a joint appearance rather than having Harris sit for a grilling alone. But it’s not clear how much voters really care about these intricacies.

Campaign heats up in Georgia as Harris and Walz plan bus tour stops

rome city bus tour stops

GEORGIA, — Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour in southern Georgia next week, marking their first joint campaign event in the state following the Democratic National Convention, according to an NBC report.

The tour aims to build momentum in the final months before the general election. Harris and Walz will also tape their first joint interview and attend fundraisers in New York, California, Florida, and Georgia.

Harris will later hold a solo rally in Savannah, her seventh visit to Georgia this year. The visit coincides with increased Republican campaigning in Georgia, including recent stops by Sen. JD Vance and former President Donald Trump.

While the exact stops for Harris and Walz's tour remain unknown, southern Georgia is home to some of the state’s largest Black communities, including Dougherty County, which has the second-highest percentage of Black residents in Georgia. The campaign has already set up field offices in predominantly Black cities like Albany and Valdosta.

“The South Georgia region is a priority for the campaign: we have nearly 50 full time staff across 7 offices in the area, including Valdosta. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said to NBC.

Donald Trump won’t be there, but Gov. Brian Kemp will, marking a major shift in the two Republicans' troubled relationship for years.

Zito: An anatomy of a Harris campaign stop shows there is no there, there

By salena zito - | aug 28, 2024.

rome city bus tour stops

PITTSBURGH — Billed as a Pittsburgh kickoff bus tour on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris and running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz instead spent Aug. 18 in Beaver County in tightly controlled stops before heading to Chicago.

Harris held a short rally at a private airport hangar surrounded by supporters — mostly members of local unions — who were bussed in for the event, before heading off to two retail stops and a visit to a phone bank before finishing the day at a local Sheetz gas station.

Beaver County, located to the west of Allegheny County, adjacent to the airport, was once a powerful component of the Democratic Party, filled with union families who worked at the Steel Mills in Aliquippa and Ambridge. As the Democratic Party shifted left, the voters moved toward the Republican Party. In 2020, then-President Donald Trump won the county over Joe Biden by nearly 20 percentage points.

While some local Democrats thought the move was strategic, to show Harris was attempting to expand her universe, others were more cynical, citing the tight control of who attended her planned events and the risk she would take doing an event in Pittsburgh and possibly facing her party’s pro-Hamas contingent, which has become politically vocal in the city.

Recently that movement, spearheaded by the Pittsburgh Democratic Socialists of America, came to a head when a proposed ballot question that would ban Pittsburgh from doing business with companies that have financial ties to Israel has spurred accusations of antisemitism and placed Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey on the hot seat.

The DSA’s Pittsburgh chapter submitted the petition to the city to put the question to voters this November.

Gainey’s initial reaction was concern about the implications of the ban that would grind to a halt the city’s ability to deliver services.

Gainey did not, however, publicly object to the ballot question.

When the ballot petitions were handed in last week, it was discovered over a dozen employees within Gainey’s administration had signed the petition — that would grind city services to a halt — including Maria Montano, director of communications.

Within days Montano stepped down from her position.

Since Oct. 7 the city has become a hotbed of pro-Palestine protests, including an encampment that was set up on the grounds of the University of Pittsburgh. The city has also become a hotbed of vandalism to synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses and the homes of Jewish residents in the city neighborhood of Squirrel Hill, where the massacre of 11 congregants at the Tree of Life synagogue occurred almost six years ago.

Several longtime Democrat strategists in Pennsylvania believe Harris avoided Pittsburgh for any of her stops and stuck close to the airport so she could avoid the possibility that protesters would interrupt her kickoff tour in Pennsylvania, an important battleground state.

Many Harris supporters expressed disappointment in not being able to find a way to see her when she was in Beaver County.

The details of her event were kept under lock and key until her arrival — given the distance of Beaver County to the city of Pittsburgh, it made it difficult for supporters to get there in enough time to see her.

Harris was greeted by Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Reps. Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.) and Summer Lee (D-Pa.), and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato at the airport, where two Harris-Walz buses were parked.

Harris greeted her invited supporters by walking into her campaign song, Beyonce’s “Freedom.”

A new Emerson College Polling/RealClearPennsylvania survey finds 49% of voters support Trump, and 48% support Harris for president in the Keystone State. With undecided voters’ support allocated, Trump extends to a 2-point lead, 51% to 49%. With third-party candidates on the ballot, it’s 47% Trump, 47% Harris.

Harris and Walz Point Their Campaign Bus to Rural Georgia

The Democrats’ presidential ticket will head to the Sun Belt, aiming to sway voters in more conservative areas to their side.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, seeking to build Democrats’ momentum in the Sun Belt, will campaign on Wednesday in the rural counties of southeast Georgia before holding a rally on Thursday in Savannah.

Democrats outside the party’s Metro Atlanta engine have long complained that focusing on the capital city, where a majority of Democratic voters in the state live, ignores pockets of supporters in less populous areas. Organizers have emphasized the particular need to engage voters in rural South Georgia and the state’s mountainous northern regions — both heavily conservative parts of the state that will still require high turnout from Black and moderate white voters to keep Democrats competitive.

A visit from the presidential ticket, some rural Democrats say, shows that top party leaders heeded their calls.

“A little does a lot in rural areas,” said Melissa Clink, the former chair of the Democratic Party in Forsyth County, north of the Atlanta suburbs. “If we can get some face time with, especially, the top of the ticket, then not only does that help donors open up their wallets to fund get-out-the-vote operations on the ground but it also inspires more people to do more work because they feel seen.”

The Georgia bus tour is similar to a campaign trip that Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz took to a conservative-leaning county outside Pittsburgh this month. Like South Georgia, Democrats in western Pennsylvania have also said their voters were being unwisely ignored by presidential campaigns. On their tour, Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz made sure to highlight the diversity of the area, engaging with residents in Aliquippa, a former steel town that has a large Black population, where they spent time with a high school football team alongside the former Pittsburgh Steelers star Jerome Bettis. (Mr. Walz is a former high school football coach, which might also play well in Georgia.)

More broadly, Democrats hope Mr. Walz — who flipped a largely rural and more conservative House district in southern Minnesota in 2006 — can help stem their losses with rural and white working-class voters, especially men, who have grown increasingly hostile to their party. He has worked to present a more caring version of masculinity that contrasts with the brash aggressiveness of Mr. Trump.

His party knows it cannot hope to win those rural voters outright. But in what is expected to be a tight election, Democrats are aiming to keep their margins manageable outside the cities and suburbs, something Joseph R. Biden Jr. accomplished during his 2020 campaign. Ms. Harris has made few gains with white men since taking over the ticket.

The Harris campaign says it has invested heavily in rural Georgia, hiring nearly 50 staff members across seven offices, in places including the small cities of Valdosta and Albany close to the Florida line and rural towns like Millen and Cordele, which calls itself the watermelon capital of the world .

Polling shows that Ms. Harris has made Georgia competitive , after it seemed to be slipping out of reach for Mr. Biden. And Mr. Trump has devoted a significant chunk of his advertising budget to the state, suggesting his team also sees the state as being back in play.

In Savannah, where Ms. Harris will hold a rally on Thursday, Democrats are hoping her visit will reignite energy in a city that is home to the second-largest cluster of blue votes in the state.

“Love is an action word — you show people first by your presence,” said Van Johnson, the mayor of Savannah, who has lobbied the Biden and Harris campaigns to campaign in the city for months since Ms. Harris visited in February. “Her presence is going to really be indicative of that esteem she has for our community.”

Harris, Walz plan bus tour across South Georgia

Sam Gringlas | WABE

This story was updated on Monday, Aug. 26 at 10:46 a.m.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour across South Georgia on Wednesday, concluding with a Thursday night Harris rally around Savannah.

The campaign swing comes days after Harris formally accepted her party’s nomination for president in Chicago and as the ticket looks to translate the energy of a whirlwind few weeks into a sustainable force that can propel the campaign through November.

Georgia remains a critical battleground, with most polls showing a tight race between Harris and former President Donald Trump. A regular visitor to Georgia since assuming the vice presidency, Harris last campaigned in Atlanta in early August, not long after ascending to the top of the ticket. Since then, Democrats see signs the ticket swap has made Georgia and other Sun Belt states more competitive.

A previously scheduled rally in Savannah was postponed due to Hurricane Debby.

2024 Georgia Elections

It’s a critical election year, and Georgia is at the center of it. Stay in the know with WABE’s 2024 Georgia Elections page, where you can find WABE’s latest election news and podcast episodes, important dates, voting locations, candidate info, results and more.

While Democratic candidates typically focus energy and resources around metro Atlanta, home to the bulk of the state’s Democratic electorate, strategists and organizers say outreach outside of populous Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett Counties has played a key role in recent wins. The state has significant populations of Black voters in smaller metros like Savannah, Columbus, Macon and Albany.

Quentin Fulks, the Harris deputy campaign manager who ran U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock’s successful 2022 campaign, told WABE last week that reaching more corners of the state is a top lesson he is applying to this national campaign in 2024.

“I think Democrats have to go places where they don’t normally go,” Fulks says. “I’m not saying we’re going to turn counties we were losing 90-10 to places we are somehow now winning. But we have to cut down on those margins.”

That’s especially important in a state that President Joe Biden won by less than 12,000 votes in 2020, even if overall, large swaths of South Georgia have been a bulwark of support for Trump and Republican candidates. U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican nominee for vice president, campaigned Thursday at a donut shop and sheriff’s office in Valdosta.

Democrats also hope Walz, a former high school football coach raised in a small town, will resonate especially in the smaller towns and rural counties that characterize much of South Georgia — places that have traditionally been Republican strongholds. During a bus tour before the DNC across western Pennsylvania, among other stops, Harris and Walz visited a high school football practice.

“I know everybody looks at Atlanta as the African American mecca,” Albany Commissioner Demetrius Young told WABE in 2022. “But if you follow this blue wave in Georgia, it came right through Albany down into Southwest Georgia. We need to hold the ground that we’ve gained.”

Nearly a quarter of rural Americans were people of color in 2020, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution. While the country’s rural population is shrinking overall, its diversity is growing.

“When people think of rural voters, they think of farmers, white people,” Albany State University alum Maggie Bell told WABE in 2022. “But really, there are Black people down here — Black people who want to be part of the election process, but they don’t get a knock at their door.”

Harris and Walz heading to Georgia as campaign seeks to build on convention momentum

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour of southern Georgia next week, the duo’s first time campaigning in the state together and, as of now, their first public event after the Democratic convention in Chicago.

The pair will be using the momentum from the party’s convention to drive them into the last couple months of the general election. In addition to the bus tour, Harris and Walz are expected to tape their first joint interview next week and attend multiple fundraisers, most likely to take place in New York, California, Florida and Georgia, according to two sources familiar with the planning.

Following the tour, Harris will headline a solo rally in Savannah, Georgia. The trip will mark Harris’ seventh visit to the state this year and her second since launching her presidential campaign last month.

“Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large population of Black voters and working class families,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a press release announcing the bus tour.

Harris and Walz’s visit will come as the Republican ticket ramps up its campaigning in the state. Vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio held a campaign event in Valdosta on Thursday, following a rally by former President Donald Trump in Atlanta earlier this month. Republicans, too, have sought to capitalize on polling that suggests the party could pick up a larger share of Black and Latino voters this election cycle.

The southern Georgia bus tour is expected to echo the campaign’s bus tour of western Pennsylvania earlier this month, which included stops at a local campaign field office, a firehouse and a high school football practice.

Harris and Walz initially planned to visit Savannah during the campaign’s battleground state tour earlier this month, but they had to postpone the event due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Though it’s unclear exactly where Harris and Walz will go, southern Georgia is home to some of the state’s largest Black populations, including Dougherty County, which has the second-highest proportion of Black residents in the state. The campaign has opened field offices in the predominantly Black cities of Albany and Valdosta.

“The south Georgia region is a priority for the campaign: We have nearly 50 full time staff across seven offices in the area, including Valdosta. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said.

Ranada Robinson, research director for the New Georgia Project Fund, said appealing to Black voters in both rural and urban areas will be critical to Harris’ success in the state, as it was to Biden’s victory in 2020.

“Black voters are the key to winning Georgia. Of course Black Georgians can’t do it alone, but we are absolutely the reason 2020 turned out the way it did,” she said. “Black voters had historical turnout, and it has to happen again for there to be victory in Georgia.”

Earlier this month, Harris held the second rally of her presidential campaign in Atlanta, an event that featured Megan Thee Stallion; the campaign said it attracted more than 10,000 people.

It then launched a mobilization effort in the state and now touts more than 35,000 volunteers, 174 staffers and 24 coordinated campaign offices sprawled across Georgia. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

The Harris-Walz campaign said it has recruited nearly 400,000 news volunteers nationally since Harris launched her presidential bid last month. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon identified Georgia as one of the campaign’s top targets, noting shifting demographics that could aid the vice president in expanding support from 2020.

“The Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” Dillon wrote in a recent memo.

Harris and Walz are also expected to barnstorm battleground states around Labor Day, before Harris focuses more of her time on debate prep ahead of her September matchup with Trump.

A Trump adviser said the campaign expects Harris will get a “bump” coming off the convention but compared it to a “sugar high,” saying they didn’t believe it will change the overall state of the race.

CORRECTION: (Aug. 25, 2024 2:05 p.m. ET) A previous version of this article misstated the number of volunteers the Harris campaign has in Georgia. It has 400,000 nationally, not in the state of Georgia.
