Here is a bit of a factsheet for planning your ferry trip from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Factsheet

Country: The Netherlands

Language Spoken: Dutch – but you can get by with just English as enough people speak this

Currency : Euros

Known For : Canals, tulips, architecture

Here are some interesting things that you might want to know about Amsterdam. For starters, when we visited we discovered that the city is actually sinking. It lies below sea level, but is being held up by the canal system and wooden poles that support it.

Amsterdam also has more bikes than people. Which honestly I’m not surprised about after visiting. Seriously, getting run over by car isn’t what scares me in Amsterdam it’s the bikes. You just need to be aware and watch out in the cycle lanes.

And if you are wondering why some of the buildings are tall but really narrow, that is because in the 17th Century you actually had to pay based on the width of your house.

Wondering if Amsterdam is worth visiting ? Here is a helpful guide.

If you are wondering how to get from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry then you will need to book through DFDS . They run ferry services between the two cities daily and year round. The ferry crossing takes around 16 hours, departing Newcastle around 5pm and arriving in Amsterdam the next morning.

If you are wondering when the best time of year to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam is we have you covered.

Personally, we think summer is the best time when it comes to weather. The days are brighter for longer, which is nice when you are spending an evening on a boat. You can also sit out on the top deck and enjoy the incredible sea views.

Of course summer is also peak time for people looking to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. This means prices are way more expensive, and deals are harder to come by. Summer in Amsterdam also means an influx of tourists which is a bit frustrating when you only have a day in the city. You will find yourself queuing up quite a lot.

Winter is an ok time to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. The Christmas markets are on in December which is nice, and you can ice skate on the canals if it is cold enough.

The downside though is that the weather will be cold, and it is likely it will be rainy. This can be frustrating when you have such a short time in Amsterdam.

We think the best time to do the cruise is in Spring. May is probably most ideal, as it is just before busy season, but the weather is mild. There are far less tourists in Amsterdam and you can find those Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry 2 for 1 deals.

  • DFDS do some really good deals for their Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise, so do check the website to bag yourself a bargain
  • If you want to spend more than 1 day in Amsterdam you can book your return ticket for a few days later
  • You need to pay for your bus transfer from the ferry terminal to Amsterdam/Newcastle in advance
  • It takes about 30-40 minutes to get from the ferry terminal to Amsterdam itself
  • You can choose various options for your cabin type from single bunk beds, to a double bed. You also need to pay more for a window in your room as the standard option doesn’t include this.

Once you have booked your Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise you are going to want to know the best what to get to Newcastle. The fastest most hassle free option is to drive. There is a car park right near the ferry terminal although be aware that charges do apply. The cost isn’t too bad considering you are leaving your car for a couple of nights and on average you will probably pay around £24 for this.

If you don’t have a car the quickest way to get to Newcastle is on the train. DFDS organise buses that take you directly from the train station to the cruise terminal. They cost around £4.00 per person each way. Or if you are like us and you get to Newcastle super early you can get the metro to Percy Main station and walk over to the ferry terminal.

Check in for our Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise was surprisingly easy and stress free. You can pre-purchase your meals during check in and they are slightly cheaper than what you would pay on board. You also need to make sure that you arrive at least 45 minutes before sailing time. We were super early and within 20 minutes of checking in we were settling into our cabin.

dfds newcastle cruise

So I’m not going to sugar coat it. The rooms are small. We were in the economy section so we had a bunk bed and no window. This was fine as we were expecting this. It was such a cheap trip and for us the room was really just for sleeping. The only issue we had was that the shower was directly over the toilet in the ensuite bathroom. Still when it is only 2 nights you don’t mind as much. Plus, when you have views of the North Sea to look at who needs to spend time in a room anyway? Of course, you can upgrade to bigger rooms, and rooms with windows if you are so inclined.

The different room types you can book when traveling from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry are as follows:

Economy Cabins

As mentioned we booked the economy room with no window. This was fine for us because it was only 2 nights, and when you have a whole ship at your disposal how much time do you want to spend inside your room? Essentially you get a room with bunk beds, and an ensuite bathroom. Space is limited, but again it’s all part of the experience.

Sea View Cabins

Sea View Cabins are similar to the economy cabins but obviously the big difference is they have a window. In honesty if we ever book again we will probably go with the sea view cabin because our cabin did feel a little claustrophobic.

Double Bed Cabins

If you are travelling as a couple it is probably worth splashing out for a double bed cabin. Again you have the choice of inside cabins (no window) and outside cabins (with a window). The double rooms are slightly more expensive than your economy and sea view cabins with bunk beds.

The ships are also kitted out with accessible and pet friendly rooms as well to meet your individual needs.

There is a lot to do on the ship. There are several bars and restaurants, as well as a cinema. For us it was nice to sit down and enjoy a nice dinner at one of the restaurants. They are a little bit pricey so keep that in mind as you might want to bring your own snacks on board instead.

We loved sipping cocktails on the top deck and watching the sun set over the North Sea. This was certainly a trip highlight for us. We also spent a bit of time in a few of the ship’s bars. They had live music playing, and after a few drunk sing-alongs we decided to go to bed.

dfds newcastle cruise

In terms of the restaurants when you travel from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry you can expect the following:

North Sea Bistro

This includes 2 or 3 course meals including things like steak or fish and vegetables. It’s basically your more high end dining option on board.

Explorers Kitchen

The Explorers Kitchen provide an international buffet where you can help yourself to Mediterranean, Asian, and Italian food – plus much more.  Prices start at £22 and the buffet comes highly recommended.

Coffee Crew Café

If you don’t want a bit feast on board, or are craving a morning coffee head to Coffee Crew Café serving Starbucks drinks, and small bites to eat.

You also have the option to partake in some Duty Free Shopping on board, or enjoy some drinks in one of the onboard bars.

The boat arrives in the morning at the port of Ijmuiden and I should mention that it takes a 40 minute bus ride to get into Amsterdam. Our advice would be to try and get on one of the first coaches if you can as this gives you a bit of extra time in Amsterdam. We arrived in the city at around 11am and we had about 5 hours to spend here before making our way back to the ship.

Obviously 5 hours is nothing in a city as incredible as Amsterdam. But if there is something you really want to do we would recommend booking tickets in advance. The bus drops you off right in the centre of the city. Just make sure you look out for bikes as you disembark the coach.  Here are some of our suggestions on how to pass the time.

dfds newcastle cruise

Do a canal cruise

Considering Amsterdam is famous for its canals, a great way to see the city is from the water. We really do recommend going on a cruise to orient yourself with the city. Our tour lasted around an hour and we got to see the incredible architecture and learn all about the history of the city and its canals. It is worth booking your cruise online in advance so that you don’t have to waste time lining up for tickets when you arrive.

dfds newcastle cruise

Fill up on fries and coffee

We didn’t get up early enough to have breakfast on the boat, so we were starving. After the cruise we made our way to a cafe and sat by the canal to eat. If you get the chance to try them, Dutch Fries with mayonnaise are amazing. It is also really nice (weather permitting) to sit by the canal sipping cups of coffee. After all you want to soak in as much of the atmosphere as possible.

dfds newcastle cruise

Walk around the canals

We spent a lot of time exploring the city on foot. We loved the beautiful canals and discovering beautiful streets. It’s such a picturesque place and it’s just really enjoyable walking around getting lost in the beauty of the city.

dfds newcastle cruise

Visit the Floating Flower Market

So the Amsterdam Flower Market is the only floating Flower Market in the world. The shops are located inside a row of barges, and is a homage to the days when flowers arrived here by boat from the countryside.

dfds newcastle cruise

It is probably one of the most colourful places in the city and is a real visual feast. Apart from flowers you can also purchase seeds and gardening tools. It is also a great place to get some souvenirs like fridge magnets and postcards.

dfds newcastle cruise

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum or the National Museum of the Netherlands is a great place to visit to learn all about the arts and history of the country. Now this will probably take the full 5 hours in Amsterdam so maybe best saved for longer trips. But if you are super keen then you can book your tickets here in advance .

Anne Frank House

This is probably one of the most well-known museums in Amsterdam. It’s a very sombre reminder of the horrors inflicted during WW2, and if you do get a chance to visit then do. You will learn all about Anne and her family, and you can tour the place they called home for 2 years whilst hiding from the Nazi’s.

Explore the edgier side of the city

On our way back to the bus we decided to have a quick walk through the back streets of the city and have a look at the coffeeshops. You hear so much about them and it was so strange walking past and seeing what they were like in person.

We actually found out that there are some strict rules when it comes to these coffeeshops, and the sale of marijuana is heavily regulated in the city. For us though, it was fascinating walking around an area that is so different to anything we would see at home. Coffeeshops are not our thing so instead we indulged in a pint of Dutch beer at a bar before heading back to the ship.

dfds newcastle cruise

Explore the Red Light District

Admittedly the Red Light District in Amsterdam isn’t going to be for everyone. But walking through is certainly an eye opening experience to say the least. It’s not as graphic or dangerous as you might think. You will see red-lit windows, sex shops, and strip clubs in the area, which might be out there for some but it’s a testament to the open attitude towards sex the Dutch hold. Also it is the oldest part of the city, and one of the oldest trades, so it is worth a visit.

And whilst we are discussing the openness towards sex, you can also visit the Amsterdam sexmuseum , if you dare.

If you are getting the ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle, then realistically with your day in Amsterdam you probably won’t really need to rely on public transport. The best thing to do is walk around and explore the city on foot.

If you do happen to use public transport though the main options are using the bus, tram, or metro. You are probably best off buying a day ticket for about €8.50. The best thing to do is download the GVB travel app onto your phone and purchase your tickets on here.

When we got back on the boat it gave us time to reflect upon our time in Amsterdam. The cruise was fantastic and definitely worth doing. Tickets can be quite cheap and it is a great idea for a mini break. That being said, we definitely want to go back to Amsterdam and spend a lot more time there. There are a lot of museums we want to see, as well as the Anne Frank house. And it would be awesome having a night out in the city. Fingers crossed we will be back soon and we will have to add it to our never ending list of places we want to go back to!

  • Book your dining in advance if you want to save some money
  • Alternatively eat before you get on the boat and have breakfast once you get to Amsterdam to save money on food
  • Try to avoid the ferry on weekends, it sort of becomes a bit of a booze cruise on Friday and Saturday night
  • Don’t fill up on Space Cakes and get on the boat!

Like we mentioned previously, 5 hours in Amsterdam will not be enough time to see everything the city has to offer. You do have the option to stay longer in Amsterdam. You can either book a one way cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam, and then a separate return from Amsterdam to Newcastle. Or you can select a longer amount of time in Amsterdam when booking your trip.

Just be mindful that it will be more expensive than the usual mini cruise, but despite this it is something we recommend. You can take all the usual stress out of travelling through the airport out of the equation, and sail to Amsterdam in style. You also don’t have to worry about getting back to the boat within the 5 hours, and can really soak up the Dutch culture.

Where to stay when travelling from Amsterdam to Newcastle by ferry

If you decide to stay a little bit longer in Amsterdam here is a bit of a guide to the best areas to stay in the city.

For first time visitors, we recommend staying in the Old Centre. This will mean you are close to the tourist attractions, and all the hustle and bustle. Admittedly accommodation can be a bit expensive here, due to the prime location, so make sure you book well in advance to secure the best deal.

If you are looking for budget accommodation we recommend stying in Oud-Zuid. It’s also very close to the museums, and the Heineken Experience.

Our favourite part of Amsterdam has to be the Canal Belt. It’s probably the most romantic part of the city, with all those charming cafes, and gorgeous canals. It’s centrally located, and great for those on a short trip to the city.

You might be wondering how much it costs to get from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry. Truth be told this will be dependent on a number of things such as the time of year you book, if you are staying longer in Amsterdam, and whether you plan to eat on the boat. As a rough idea here are some numbers:

Return trip from Newcastle to Amsterdam: £220 for 2 (unless you can get a 2 for 1 deal which do pop up sometimes).

Food on board: £60 for 2

Spending money in Amsterdam: €30 -€100 depending on what attractions you want to see.

Amsterdam is a pretty expensive city to visit. Maybe not in the same realms as  London  or  Oslo , but it’s definitely not super cheap.

We recommend budgeting about €80 per person for you day in Amsterdam. This will include things like attractions, food, drink, and transport.

If you aren’t planning on eating at expensive restaurants, or spending the day sipping cocktails you can definitely do things a lot cheaper. Plus with the limited time you will probably not be able to spend that much money on attractions and the like.

Here are some of the things we recommend packing for your Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry trip.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – especially for walking around Amsterdam
  • A warm jacket – especially useful for the boat as it can get windy and cold if you are standing outside
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Layered clothes for a variety of weather as this can be unpredictable in Amsterdam (and Newcastle for that matter)
  • Rain/ waterproof items.

Here are some final tips for getting the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

  • Pack a few snacks as again these will be cheaper than buying them onboard.
  • Check Groupon and other booking sites for any 2 for 1 deals on your ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam.
  • Try and get to the front of the queue and be one of the first off the boat to give yourself more time in Amsterdam.
  • Be careful when booking tours in advance especially if these include timed starts as it is hard to predict when you will be in Amsterdam.
  • Don’t bring drugs onto the boat!
  • Carry your ID with you at all times in Amsterdam, as you will need to show it to police if you are stopped.
  • Watch out for bikes in Amsterdam!

For us the Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise was absolutely worth it. The cruise itself was really enjoyable and relaxing. A big part of the holiday was enjoying our time on the boat and watching the sunset. Despite the tickets being cheap the food and drink onboard does get a bit pricey so keep that in mind when weighing up your costs. That being said if you are wanting to travel a little differently than we recommend going from Newcastle to Amsterdam by ferry.

If you are trying to decide between London or Amsterdam here is a helpful guide.

This sounds like a fun trip, Lizzie! I’m keen to visit the floating flower market when I travel to Amsterdam next spring.

It really was. The floating flower market is beautiful and I bet it will be even more amazing in Spring.

I found this so interesting! Going by boat to Amsterdam is never something I’ve considered but the ship actually sounds really nice, and the views from it are stunning! Glad you had a good time 🙂 I also have the same blog layout as you, hahaha.

We had never thought about it either until we found the deal. It was a lot of fun but next time I definitely want to stay longer. As for the blog layout I guess great blogs think alike!

This is so cool!! I looked at doing this YEARS ago when those deals kept coming up, but Newcastle wasn’t ideal for us to get to – now if we move to Edinburgh, it’ll be easy! Hope they still do the deals. 🙂 You got loads done in Amsterdam too! Fab itinerary.

I do keep seeing the deals so hopefully something will come up soon!

The buffet is obviously buffet quality food and great value if you pre-book, especially if you’ve got an appetite! If you’re looking for fine dining then The North Sea Bistro is probably better suited for you. Prices are as follows;

2-COURSE À LA CARTE DINNER PRICES

#ferrygoodfood, ferry prices..

The next time I travel on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam I do think that I’d probably dine at The North Sea Bistro over The Explorer’s Kitchen and that’s just based on my personal preference of having a plated meal over a buffet. I do, however, think that (if pre-booked) it’s good value for money especially if you intend on eating a lot and/or you are travelling with children.

I do, however, also think that the drinks prices are a little excessively priced, with a fresh orange juice costing €4. This is not just in The Explorer’s Kitchen, I also felt that the price of drinks was exceptionally high across the whole ship on my last trip to Amsterdam from Newcastle via the DFDS mini cruise ferry.

Have you been on the ferry? I’d love to know your thoughts below.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Cruise ship cancels visit to Newcastle to avoid anti-coal protests

Matthew Kelly

NSW Premier Chirs Minns has slammed climate activists' plans to blockade Newcastle Harbour in November after a major cruise ship operator announced it was cancelling a visit to the city to avoid the upcoming protest.

Port of Newcastle confirmed on Tuesday that it had been advised the cruise ship Silver Nova had scrapped plans to arrive in the port at 8am on November 24 and depart at 6pm.

The reason given was a planned 10-day protest on and around the harbour organised by environmental activist group Rising Tide.

The decision will have major economic knock-on effects including the cancellation of day trips to the region and the loss of spending opportunities in the city.

Rising Tide, which is seeking to stop coal exports from the port by 2030, has applied to NSW Police to protest between November 19 to 28.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told the Newcastle Herald he did not support the protesters' plans.

"I've made my views clear on this - I don't support this action, I'd rather it didn't happen," he said.

"My understanding is there is a form 1 (Notice of intention to hold a public assembly) that has been lodged and police are currently reviewing it."

Last year an estimated 1500 protesters took to Newcastle Harbour in kayaks and rafts to prevent ships from entering the world's largest coal port for more than 30 hours.

Organisers claimed the event stopped as many as eight ships carrying up to half a million tonnes of coal leaving the port.

More than 100 people who were arrested after they refused to leave the water when the protest permit expired.

The cancellation of the Silver Nova's visit is the first time that anti-coal protests have directly impacted on the non-coal sector of the Hunter's community.

Port of Newcastle chief executive Craig Carmody described the blockade, which will result in the ship's 728 passengers and 556 crew crew bypassing the Newcastle and Hunter, as an act of economic vandalism.

Craig Carmody

"As a port that facilitates trade for over 25 different cargoes, these economic vandals continue to impact Hunter families and communities across NSW,"he said.

"In discussions with farmers, who are reporting a bumper harvest this year, Port of Newcastle is preparing for a possible record season for grain exports, however, with an extended protest being planned, we cannot guarantee these expected volumes.

"As was seen with the criminals who blocked the train lines earlier this year, the intent to only block the trade of one commodity is fanciful, these groups have no regard whatsoever for the lives and industries they impact beyond their single-minded purpose."

The ship's owner Silversea did not comment.

A Rising Tide spokesman said non-coal vessels would be granted passage to the port throughout the duration of the People's Blockade.

"We agree with Craig Carmody's recent comments, published in the Newcastle Herald , that the coal export industry could collapse within the next decade. This is supported by the International Energy Agency, which recently predicted that global coal demand will "reach a turning point and start declining soon".

"At the People's Blockade, Rising Tide will be strongly advocating for a 75 per cent export profits tax on the currently lucrative coal industry, which in 2023 accounted for 94 per cnet of total trade through the Port of Newcastle. Proceeds from the tax would help prepare the Hunter for declining coal exports by funding investment in new industries, and training and support for affected workers."

"As per last year, we continue our guarantee to all non-coal vessels that they will have unobstructed passage during the People's Blockade of coal ships this November. We warmly invite the operators of the Silver Nova to reach out to us to arrange passage during this time and look forward to showing them and their passengers into our city."

Protesters defied an exclusion zone to prevent a coal ship from entering Newcastle Harbour during a protest in October 2014. Picture: Darren Pateman

Newcastle State MP Tim Crakanthorp said, while he supported the right to protest, it was unfortunate that the blockade would impact an organisation trying hard to diversify away from coal.

"More cruise ships stopping in our port will inevitably increase social, cultural and economic benefits for Newcatle and the wider Hunter community," he said.

Former Tourism Hunter chairman Will Creedon, who has advocated for more cruise ships to visit Newcastle, described the blockade as a "disgrace".

"There are other ways to create effective change on climate issues," he said.

"What they are actually doing is hurting an industry and the wider visitor economy that is already under severe stress from economic conditions and inflationary conditions, they are just adding to it."

He predicted that the Silver Nova could be the first of many cruise ships to avoid Newcastle.

"For the next number of years those cruise companies will be questioning should we come to Newcastle because of the activist regime," Mr Creedon said.

"It's not fair on the people who live here and derive a living selling food and clothes to visitors. It's an absolute disgrace."

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Kazan cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-09-08 08:40

Kazan (Казан) is a Volga River cruise port, as well as the largest city and capital of Tatarstan (one of Russia's republics). By population (around 1,2 million) the city is ranked Russia's 8th largest. It is located at the confluence of two rivers - Volga and Kazanka.

The city's best-known tourist attractions are Kazan Kremlin and Kazan Riviera. Kazan Kremlin is a citadel built by Tzar Ivan Grozny (1547-1584) on the ruins of the khan's castle. Kazan Kremlin includes the buildings Annunciation Cathedral (an orthodox church with 6 piers and 5 apses), Soyembika Tower, Spasskaya Tower, Secret Tower, snow-white towers, and walls, Qol-Sarif mosque, Governor's House (Tatarstan's presidential palace). Since 2000, the city is being constantly renovated and rebuilt (including Kazan Kremlin), and in 2005 was celebrated its 1000th anniversary.

Kazan is one of Russia's largest industrial and financial centers, ranked Russia's 3rd by total banking capital. The main industries are mechanical engineering, chemical and petrochemical industries, food processing, aircraft (engines plant, aircraft production factory). Here is Russia's largest IT-park.

The city is served by Kazan International Airport (approx 26 km / 16 mi from downtown). Railways connect Kazan to Moscow, Ulyanovsk, Yoshkar-Ola, Yekaterinburg. The federal highway links it to Moscow and Ufa, Orenburg, Ulyanovsk , and Igra, as well as to Northern Europe and Western China.

Kazan Russia — a thousand-year Russian city

Kazan russia memorable date - tatarstan republic day: the origin and celebrations.

One of the most celebrated days in Kazan city is the Republic Day . It reflects both the old Russian and Tatar people customs and festivals and a new face of Kazan city. Crowds gather in the Kazan city stadium, located on the site of the old Tashayak Fair, to see the colorful spectacle: horse races, the national wrestling, the ingenious folk contests, such as the famous sabantuy, 'the celebration of the plough'.

The crowds of Kazan city people that assemble to celebrate the Republic Day could be seen in earlier times only during the officially sanctioned manifestations organized for May Day and the anniversary of the October Revolution. But on the Republic Day the people who gather together whatever their ethnic origins, experience a new feeling of solidarity and common purpose. Besides Russians and Tatars , who are the most numerous, there are the Chuvash, Mari, Udmurt and Mordvin peoples and many others. Although in recent years there has been much emphasis on the renaissance of the Tatar nation and its culture . It should not be overlooked that, according to the statistics, every inhabitant of Kazan city is a partner in or comes from a mixed marriage Kazan has always been noted for the good relations among the people that make up its inhabitants. Despite all the national sporting events when, for example, on the ice of Lake Kaban the workmen of the Tatar settlement and the Sukonny quarter, located on opposite shore came out to try their strength in fist-fighting, the history of the few centuries has not known serious ethnically-based conflicts. Working together and sharing the burdens of life has always been common to the multi-national population.

Strictly speaking, this comes at the beginning of summer, after the first hay-making but why not celebrate it again in August, at harvest time? The Tatar festivals mirror the people's adventurous spirit and their zeal for work. It should be mentioned that in the old days landowners along the Volga always tried to hire Tatar peasants for the harvest, not only because they were remarkable for their sobriety, but because they knew how to use two hands on the scythe.

The Kazan city history says that prince Andrey Kurbsky who had distinguished himself during the capture of Kazan city , gave a rapturous description of the surrounding area. He said: "In that land there are big fields, exceptionally abundant and generous in their crops. There are also the beautiful courts of their princes and grandees, truly amazing. There are villages, and there is so much grain of all sorts that one cannot describe or believe it - it is as plentiful as the stars in the sky."

The anonymous author of The History of Kazan city , who lived for a long time at the court of the khan, describes what he saw with similar wonder: "It is a beautiful place... rich in pasturage for herds, and rich for bees, bringing forth all types of grasses and abundant in fruit, full of wild animals, fish and all sorts of worldly goods; you cannot find another place like it for beauty and wealth in the whole of the Russian land, with such riches that I'm not sure any foreign lands have."

Kazan Russia - The Republic Day celebrations: the national wrestling

The multi-national culture of Kazan city is displayed at the Republic Day festival in its full spectrum: there is the Kazan Theatre of Fashion , which is almost unique in the world, musical ensembles playing on traditional instruments, the dramatised history under the open sky. At such breathtaking spectacles, when the stadium becomes a theatre, it is very clear that the greatest riches of Kazan city are the people who live there.
