Yuna, real name Yunalis Mat Zara'ai, is a Malaysian singer-songwriter from Kuala Lumpor. Born in 1986, the singer is known for a range of musical styles including pop, folk rock and R&B.

Yuna began experimenting with music at the age of 14. Gaining confidence and a steady online following via the social network MySpace, Yuna performed her first live gig in Malaysia at the age of 19. Known for her guitar and ukulele playing abilities, Yuna did not pick up these instruments until her late teens. Despite knowing music was her passion and touring all over Malaysia, Yuna decided to simultaneously attend university and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies in 2009.

After entering the Malaysian talent competition “One In A Million”, Yuna’s star really began to rise and the singer was eventually sought out by management company Indie-Pop. Soon after signing with this management company, Yuna signed a record deal with FADER Label in 2011. That same year, Yuna released her debut EP on the label, “Decorate”, and the release caught the attention of musicians Farhan Fadzlishah, Efry Arwis and Adil Ali, who would eventually become part of her band.

In 2012, Yuna released the single “Live Your Life”, which was produced by Pharrell Williams. The single attracted extensive critical acclaim and hit the number 37 spot on the US Heatseekers chart. The single came from Yuna’s self-titled 2012 album, which went to number 23 on the US Heatseekers chart.

There’s a timeless groove to the R&B of Yuna on her fourth album Rouge. It’s the most ambitious project the songwriter has ever taken on, and the first album she’s putting out as a fully realized woman. It’s also an LP that she worked harder than ever on, re-visiting songs, editing them down, adding new layers, enriching every single moment to make it the most luscious musical experience for her audience. Yuna makes soulful pop that contains the sultriness of Sade, the flair of Aaliyah, and the sweetness of Brandy. There are clear forebears upon her art, but her story is so singular that it’s hard to draw a line in the sand when it comes to Yuna’s lineage in the urban pop spectrum.

Industry insiders such as Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster have touted Yuna as an artist to watch, and her fan base has exploded both in Malaysia and the US. Yuna’s extensive and versatile sound, which she claims is inspired by artists such as Feist, Bob Dylan and Coldplay, will without doubt continue to serve her well for years to come.

Live reviews

Yunalis Mat Zara’ ai, better known as just Yuna, is a singer/songwriter from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and an inspiration to so many people. Her vocals are out of this world, and the epitome of beauty.

A friend of mine introduced me to her music so I jumped at an opportunity to see her at the Santa Monica Starlight concert series a few weeks ago. It was an absolutely perfect setting to see Yuna, with the sun going down over the ocean, and her vocals putting you in a relaxed state. You can tell that she is a bit shy outside of singing, based on her soft-spoken voice, but at the same time she was very humble and appreciative of the support that she had. She played the majority of the show with her Ukelele or guitar, an additional guitarist and a percussion track. Her voice is absolutely stunning, and pretty much indescribable.

Within her set she performed songs from her album, “Remember My Name.” Scattered between these songs, she also included a few covers, which were amazing because they were her take on them. The best cover of the night was “Come As You Are,” originally done by Nirvana. She used an acoustic guitar, and her delicate vocals really gave the song a whole different feeling. Absolutely beautiful.

The concert was awesome, the venue was perfect and intimate. I drove 2.5 hours to see Yuna and have been listening to her older music for some time now. Yuna didn't disappoint. Her voice was just as lovely in person as the CDs I've been listening to, and her warm and playful interaction with the crowd made it seem like we were in a room of only 10 people instead of 100. The experience was perfect and welcoming and so worth it! Thank you Yuna and Local 506. I'd drive 2.5 hours all over again in a heartbeat. Much love.

Simply amazing! I've never listen to any of her songs before but I am now. Elegant, talented and great singer.

I was gutted when I found out that her show started at 9.45pm and not earlier but she came out on time. She sang mostly from her latest album "Chapter" and at one point; she pretended to welcome Usher to the stage!!! The crowd went mental for 2 seconds but we were brought down to earth when she said "just kidding!"

Overall, it was a great night. Worth every minute watching her performing on stage.

She just reflects her amazing personality through her music. My first ever concert and I don't think any other could top that. And she made me cry during her concert :)! I love her music and I wish her all the best in her music career.

Yuna, Thank you for a lovely evening. You were even better live. Your music is beautiful & lovely. Please come back soon! Artistry is everything, please don't change. Your solo brought me to tears. So beautiful.

The show has been cancelled.

It has already been postponed once before. It’s so disappointing.

Especially when you have been informed only few days before the show. No more to say for me.

Yuna is always awesome. This show she explained her songs before she sang them. She was also more relaxed in this show than the last show I saw. She was as beautiful as ever too.
