Overall I had a great time, but there were certain aspects that kept it from being exceptional. A big one was the overpriced optional snorkeling tour. It was marked up $30 over normal ($110 vs. $80). The tour is on Isabela Island. On arrival after check in there will be free time before dinner. I recommend taking this time to shop around the tour operators and book on your own. Separately, I recommend bringing your own snorkel equipment. There are a few opportunities to snorkel right off the beach apart from the group, and also the contracted snorkel companies could not be relied upon to have the appropriate size fins, especially for women.

Once we got all the paperwork sorted & through the airport COVID checks etc the fun began! I liked the family style accommodation & the hotel in Santa Cruz, all within walking distance of everything, the same in Quito in the old city. Genesis our very knowledgeable guide from Intrepid was lovely. I think she could suggest different levels for eating out since it is pricier on the islands. Edwardo in Quito with Intrepid was great at guiding us through the airport protocol with test results needed etc but he should have been at the airport to meet us on our return instead of sending someone else as because of COVID we all had. a lot of questions about our last night and our onward journeys the following day & had to wait for him to arrive before we could go out to eat. However these points will be brought up along with others when I write my harsher review to Intrepid regarding the unnecessary anxiety they caused me regarding the lack of communication it letting me know A) that I was even going on the trip (I found out 2 days before)!! Then, I was frantic for those 2 days trying to find out the starting Hotel in Quito. I FINALLY found out the name at almost midnight, 7 hrs before catching the bus into the City. I know by the emails from Tourradar that you were also doing your best so I portion no blame on you. I never want to go through that anxiety again & would definitely choose a different company (probably G.Adventures, over Intrepid in the future).

Affordable Galapagos 8 Days Tour

The tour started very badly when no guide arrived for the first evening orientation and no-one was at the hotel the next morning as promised to take us to the airport. Once in the Galapagos most activities went very well. One tour contact did not speak English but otherwise the guides were very good. We have not had any contact with GuideEcuador since the beginning.and no follow up as to a promise of making amends for the frustration felt when we were very concerned that maybe there was no trip to be had. Jose and Sofia in San Cristobal, Dario in Santa Cruz and Paola on Isabella were excellent. The snorkelling guide on Isabella was very poor in organization and instruction. We had expected a follow up from Guide Ecuador

Adventure Journeys is a very professional tour operator. All of our guides were excellent and did there best to please us. The hotel in Quito is definitely five star. Make sure that you ask to be placed in the second tower as the rooms are of nicer quality and they have air conditioning (on the chance that Quito is not cool). The accomodations on the islands are nice but your experiences can vary depending on the rooms you are assigned. They vary in size and views. Most are small hotels so there aren’t a lot of choices to go around if you are in a large group. We stayed on San Cristobal, Isabela, and Santa Cruz. Arianna was our tour guide on San Cristobal. Knowledgeable and very helpful. I especially enjoyed the Kicker Rock excursion. They take you to a beautiful beach that you get to explore for about an hour an a half and then you go snorkeling around Kicker Rock for a couple of times for a total of about 1 1/2 hr. The snorkeling was amazing as you see much wildlife (sharks, turtles, sea lions, rays, lots of fish and one side of the rock is beautiful). My favorite snorkeling experience on Galapagos. It was nice to take the inter island flight to Isabela and save us a 4 hr boat ride. Los Túneles was snorkeling was fun as we saw sharks, lots of turtles and sea horses. Definitely was enjoyable swimming with the turtles. Water could have been clearer. The highlight was walking on the islands and getting up close and personal with the blue footed boobies! Guess it should be mentioned that we went in mid April as conditions change as do the animals. Wetsuits were provided but nowhere was the water overly cool. We also saw some penguins on this excursion. The walk through the marsh was great for the flamingos and other birds. Also, enjoyed the bike ride on Isabela to the Wall of Tears. Nice little hike for a 360 view to a lookout point and later a short walk through the mangroves. It was cool running into the tortoises in the wild as well. We had a rainy and cloudy walk to the crater. It would have been cool to see it without the clouds, but this was the only weather problem we encountered. The kayaking at Las Tintoreras was more swimming with turtles and penguins. We literally were swimming with the penguins here. It is nice as all the animals on the Galapagos aren’t afraid of people, so you’re pics and experiences are all magnified. There is a two hour boat ride from Isabela to Santa Cruz. Sit up top with the captain and miss out on the vomit fest downstairs with everyone else. On Santa Cruz, the highlights were the Charles Darwin Center and the Tortoise Reserve. Once again at the reserve, you can see the giant tortoises up close in the wild. Very cool. Not to be left out was kudos for our guide on Isabela and Santa Cruz, Maritza. She was great the whole time and a treasure trove of information. AJ has great guides! Christian, one of the owners (I think) took us and picked us up at the airport in Quito. On the way back, we asked about street food and he asked us if we’d like to go to La Floresta and try the local street food. Great idea and great experience! Super experience and great tour company!

6-Day Galapagos Land Tour & Cabo Rosa - Los Tuneles Program

Overall, it was a good tour, and kept us quite busy. I would have preferred to have an extra day in Santa Cruz and one less day and Isabella. We had a very nice room for our two night stay in Santa Cruz, but the room in which we spent four nights in the Isabella was far from adequate. It had no amenities, and the host lady, or manager, was quite unfriendly and uninviting, making it difficult to ask her for anything. The room was not kept clean on a daily basis, and the room and bathroom were extremely small. Bathroom was so small I could barely turn around in it.

7 Day Galapagos Island Hopping Budget

The Galapagos are incredible and overall the Rebecca Budget Tour was satisfactory. The hotels were clean and most of the provided meals were good. However, some of the day trips were changed at the last minute with little notice. We also received little information in advance about various fees, including a $100 park fee for the Galapagos that had to be paid in cash. Some guides were excellent with a lot of knowledge about the Galapagos. We also appreciated getting underwater video of snorkeling trips from some guides. Overall, I would recommend this tour but better information should be provided.

The tour organized by Indus Travels was flawless. Hotels, tours, and transportation all impressed me. We had a very relaxing time knowing what was happening at each stage. The scenery and activities were fantastic and did not disappoint. The highlight of the trip was definitely Galapagos Islands.

Great itinerary, it gave a broad spectrum of all the different islands and wildlife. It is a combination of day tours, so it was awesome to have the flexibility of starting anytime you want and meeting different people along the way. The hotel was also fantastic, the staff was so friendly and helpful.

Galapagos Essentials

My husband & I had one other traveler with us on our Adventure Journeys "Galapagos Essentials" land-based tour so this allowed for a more personalized experience. We flew to Baltra but immediately went to Santa Cruz for 2 nights, then San Cristobal 2 nights. We thoroughly enjoyed most of our experiences there however for all the flights/expense required to get to/from the Galapagos, seemed like a lot of travel for just a few hours/day/3 days of sightseeing: lesson learned. Be advised, the 2+ hour boat ride between the 2 islands, especially if the afternoon winds/swells are up, is NOT fun (insist on a seat up top)! Our guides on each island were excellent: knowledgeable locals who love their home and were good company while sightseeing! One can choose to spend a lot or not so much for meals on both islands, some delicious vegan options available (Agave Studio, a few minutes walk from our Hotel Fiesta on San Cristobal, makes a delish vegan ceviche!). Unlike mainland Ecuador, the islands are busy with tourists; obviously, a safe place to visit/explore.

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.

This tour is intended for people who are physically fit,able to walk 6 kilometers a day, love to kayak/snorkel/swim/bike, and still have plenty of energy to enjoy the wildlife. I cannot cope up with the group, but luckily our CEO offered me options like museum visit, tour to Tntoreras. I still was able yo see all the wildlife I need to see exvept the cormorant. I did not expect to stay in a 5 star hotel. I find the accommodation suitable enough for my needs: comfortable bed, air condition, water, electricity, wifi. Special thanks to Sandra, CEO. She is one of the best tour guides I met in my years of travel. She is a great listener and teacher. She was born in Santa Cruz. She knows Galapagos like the palm of her hand.

But wait… what is the difference between a land-based tour and a cruise?

There is not a lot of difference between a Galapagos land-based tour and a cruise . Considering that the visitor sites will be almost the same as long as they can be reached within a couple hours from your hotel, wildlife will be the same and the experience will be the best of your life.

Nevertheless, and considering the questions that this may arise, we have prepared these FAQs about the difference between these kinds of tours.

Which is the cheapest way to visit the Galapagos?

All of the cruises are all-inclusive, which means that inside the rate everything will be covered, from the meals, drinks (save for alcoholic beverages), to the guided-excursions, night accommodation, and inter-island transfers.

On the other hand, land-based tours not always have everything included in the rate, meaning that most dinners will have to be covered by you, apart from the per person expense of the daily tour and transfers, which does not necessarily means that hotel-based will be more expensive.

Will I see the same visitor sites?

Most of the visitor sites seen in both tours will be the same. However, due to cruising time, boats are able to reach some islands that cannot be seen on a land-based tour. This happens because most of the traveling while onboard a cruise occurs at night. Therefore, while you sleep the vessel can reach longer distances.

Is a cruise as comfortable as a hotel?

This is a tricky question. When choosing a good vessel, like the ones suggested by our Travel Experts, you will be comfortable while cruising, anyhow, sea roughness has to be always considered. On the other hand, and indisputably sleeping on land will always be stable and comfortable.

Where does the tricky part come? Transferring between islands occurs aboard speedboats, which can be a really bumpy ride, that can last from 2 to 3 hours.

Travel to the enchanted islands from any part of the world by air, with a quick hop from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands. From flight coordination to tailoring your itinerary, our Expedition Designers do it all.

Is there a flight directly to Galapagos? There are no direct international flights to Galapagos. To reach the islands, you must first arrive in mainland Ecuador (either Quito or Guayaquil), then take a quick flight directly to your Galapagos cruise port.

How much does a ticket cost from Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos? The extra roundtrip plane ticket from Ecuador’s mainland cities of Quito or Guayaquil to Galapagos averages US$ 450-500. This tier of tickets allows for changes and includes one checked bag. Domestic air tickets to Galapagos are typically not included with Quasar's Galapagos cruises, however, we are happy to help you arrange this flight in conjunction with your selected yacht safari.

How far in advance should you book your flight to the Galapagos or South America? Unlike other destinations, airlines that fly to Galapagos do not apply the typical dynamic pricing conditions. Therefore, the “golden rule” of booking flights between 40 and 50 days prior to your cruise does not always apply. Because flights to the islands are limited, the peak time to buy your ticket to Galapagos is as soon as your island accommodations are booked (cruise or hotel).

There are roughly 70 terrestrial and 70 marine visitor sites throughout the national park where travelers are permitted. Only a handful of these landing sites are accessible from the hotels by day boat, usually at additional cost.

Hotels throughout Galapagos compete for spaces on day boats that take visitors to landing sites. If you are lucky enough to get a seat, landing site rides can then be 2.5 hours each way with a high possibility of getting seasick.

Organizations like Celebrity, Silversea, Disney and Hurtigruten now offer cruises in the archipelago. 6. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET FROM ECUADOR TO GALAPAGOS?

To get to the Galapagos Islands you must take a domestic flight from the cities of Guayaquil (airport code GYE), Manta (airport code MEC) or Quito (airport code UIO) in mainland Ecuador. All three cities offer direct flights to the Galapagos, although only Quito and Guayaquil currently offer them daily.

Direct flights from the cities of Guayaquil and Manta to Galapagos take between 1 hour and 45 minutes to up to 2 hours (depending on wind and weather conditions). Direct flights from Quito to Galapagos take about 2 hours and 20 minutes. However, it is worth noting that there are normally only 1 to 2 direct flights to the Islands per day from Quito, while there are about 6 to 8 flights to the Islands with a brief stopover in Guayaquil. Flying to Galapagos via Guayaquil is the most common way to get to the Islands when flying from Quito. These flights take around 3 hours 30 min to 3 hours 50 minutes, depending on the airline you choose and the length of the stop in Guayaquil. Stopovers in Guayaquil are normally not long (40 to 50 minutes) and you are not required to disembark the plane while the airplane refuels and the passengers from Guayaquil board. 7. ARE THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS SAFE FOR TRAVEL?

Galapagos is arguably one of the safest and most magical destinations in the world. Crime is basically nonexistent in the islands, but there are some basic precautions that all Galapagos travelers must take, especially when visiting mainland Ecuador. Everyone who visits Galapagos must spend at least a day in the mainland, at one of Ecuador’s main cities. 8. WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT THE GALAPAGOS?

For anyone interested in visiting the Galapagos, there is really no better or worse month to visit the Islands. In part this is because the Galapagos archipelago is right on the equator; therefore air and water temperatures do not vary much throughout the year. In addition, almost all of the animal species in Galapagos do not migrate, which means you can see them any time of the year. The Waved Albatross is one of the few migratory exceptions and is best seen in spring and summer. However, there is a high season for tourism in Galapagos which tends to be from mid-December to January and from June to August. This coincides with the general holidays and vacation months of the northern hemisphere and doesn’t have anything to do with weather or animal migration patterns in Galapagos. High and Low seasons are solely based on the travel trends of the Galapagos’ main market, North America, which represents about 60% of its international travelers. So, if you want to avoid the crowds in Galapagos, and perhaps even take advantage of a nice discount, travel in ‘the secret season’ which is from September through early December.

9. HOW TO GET TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

Unless you already live in Ecuador, making your way to the Galapagos is going to be a multi-leg travel event. You’ll have to take an international flight to get to Ecuador, and then you’ll need to take a domestic flight out to the islands. There are a few important things to remember when trying to get to Galapagos:

- There are no international flights to Galapagos. - The only way to get to the Islands is by air. - Make sure you are flying to the right island in Galapagos. - Don’t book your flights before you have booked your cruise or hotel stay. - Leave some buffer time between your international and domestic flights.
