Winter is coming

Save up to 5%.

This is not the north of the wall kind of winter you see in Game of Thrones. The gingerbread season turns Europe into a cauldron of Christmas markets, apres ski and snowy backstreets. Go ice-skating on the Eiffel Tower, explore local markets and drink lots of gluhwein. It doesn't hurt that the flights are about half price either. Win-win-winter.

The Trans-Mongolian Railway: What To Expect.

Thinking about taking the greatest train ride in the world? The Trans-Mongolian Railway with Topdeck is just what you’re looking for.

Spanning over 7,000 kilometres from truly epic Moscow, through the heart of Siberia, onwards through the plains of Mongolia and finishing in the mega city of Beijing, the Trans-Mongolian Railway offers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Come get the lowdown on what to expect and don’t forget to check out the Topdeck Trans-Mongolian Railway itineraries for details of departures.

Trans-Mongolian railway

1. How do the trains work?

The Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian routes form a massive rail network across three countries. Our journey uses four trains and includes a mixture of Russian, Mongolian and Chinese trains.

There are three classes on the train:

  • First Class: Twin-share
  • Second Class: Quad-share
  • Third Class: Open-plan dormitory on the train carriage with 54 beds

When travelling with Topdeck, you’ll be in Second Class so you can share the journey with your new travel mates. There are four bunk beds in each cabin with reading lights and a small foldable table in the middle of the cabin.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

In Second Class, each carriage has around nine cabins and has an attendant called the Provodnitsa. There are two toilets in each carriage but there are no showers on board so remember to bring some wet wipes!

There are also power sockets near the toilets and in the hall of the carriage.

Trans Mongolian car diagram

2. How does the train timetable work?

Trans-Mongolian Railway

The train will make scheduled stops along the route. The length of these stops range from a couple of minutes to over an hour.

Look for the train timetable in the carriage corridor and ask the Provodnitsa if you need a little help identifying the station names.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

You can jump on to the platform if time permits to stretch your legs during stops or venture a little further to explore.

Pro tip: try and learn a bit of the Cyrillic alphabet so you can recognise signs and stations on your journey through Russia.

Trans-Mongolian railway

3. What’s the deal with the food?

Trans-Mongolian Railway

Some trains have a restaurant car. The prices of food and drink can be a little steep by local standards but it’s usually tasty and there’s a variety of local dishes on the menu (ideal for you foodies out there).

During the train’s scheduled stops, the platforms will usually have a kiosk selling various items. You’ll also see locals on the platforms selling homemade and packaged food. It’s a great idea to pick up some snacks, such as noodles, lots of water and some drinks to satisfy those cravings.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

Each carriage has a hot water boiler that you can use for tea, coffee and making noodles (yes!).

4. What should I pack?

Trans-Mongolian railway

  • Suitable bags: The cabins aren’t the biggest space in the world and the train corridors are very narrow so be conscious of space when packing. A small day bag will come in handy too.
  • Books: Now’s the time to tackle that novel that’s been sitting on your coffee table for the last year.
  • Gadgets, tablets, cameras: Something to keep you entertained during the longer days and nights. A noise cancelling pair of headphones is also key. A torch can be useful for finding things at night. There’s no Wi-Fi on the train so be prepared and pre-download any movies etc.
  • Notepad: To keep a journal, note down memories and to capture idle thoughts. Or, you know, for when you need to communicate you want the chicken option in the restaurant car.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

  • Power board: Share the love.
  • Portable charger: For when the love can’t be shared.
  • Mug, spoon, spork: Pretty self-explanatory.
  • Toilet roll and wet wipes: Your portable shower!
  • Snacks and drinks: Bring some food that isn’t going to go off easily like noodles and biscuits. There are no fridges on the train, but don’t let that stop you from sharing a few drinks! You can bring alcohol on to the train with no worries – you just can’t drink your own supply of alcohol in the restaurant car.

Trans-Mongolian Railway

  • Cards, games: Gather a group of #Topdeckers or some new found railway travellers for a game of cards in your cabin. Add vodka on the colder nights.
  • Clothing: Depending on the time of year, your clothes may need to cater for a wide range of temperatures. Colder months will require a big coat for sure. It’s also good to pack clothes that can be layered. The cabins can get pretty warm, so its good to have the option to peel off when you get too hot. Again depending on the weather, a good pair of shoes/boots are a must. Some flip flops or sneakers are fine for the train. Gloves, scarves and warm hats are essential if travelling in colder months.

And that’s pretty much it! Excited yet? 😉

Gear up for a journey like no other and come and check out what the Trans-Mongolian Railway is all about. Find out more about Topdeck’s Trans-Mongolian Railway trip .

Topdeck Review [2024]: Are The Travel Tours Worth It?

Topdeck Review [2024]: Are The Travel Tours Worth It?

Here's all you'll need to know about Topdeck, the tour guide company, including what its main features are, what their reviews look like, and if they're worth the try. Read on to find out.

topdeck travel

Solo travel can be an amazing experience, but sometimes all the planning can be a bit much. That’s where  tour guide companies  come in handy.

You can kick your feet up and let them plan the nitty gritty of your next travel adventure. There are loads of companies out there, but in this article, we’ll give you an inside look at  Topdeck .

Interested in other options for tour guide companies? Check out our reviews of Contiki Tours , EF Ultimate Break , and a lot more here ! In the meantime, here's Topdeck.

Topdeck logo

What is Topdeck?

Topdeck is a travel company specializing in “meaningful group travel in Europe, New Zealand, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.” Their tours are geared towards 18-30 somethings (their words, not ours), and your group leader will help guide you through an itinerary filled with the must-sees, as well as local secrets.

What are the main features of Topdeck?

  • Let someone else handle the logistics:  Topdeck organizes the accommodation, excursions, meals, and transport. You can kick your feet up and enjoy your trip without having to worry about planning out every detail or getting from place to place
  • Trip styles for everyone:  Whether you’re wanting to travel by exploring a city in-depth, taking it easy with a “hotel trip” or going at it by boat, Topdeck has multiple  trip styles  from which to choose. This way, your holiday fits your vibe!
  • Tour leaders:  Every trip gets its own designated tour leader who is there to not only ensure you get where you need to be but to help you make the most of your trip.
  • Mobile app:  Once you’ve booked a Topdeck trip, you can download the Topdeck app to view your itinerary, set your own travel budget, and chat with the rest of your travel group to get to know them before departure
  • Group tours:  Topdeck only offers group tours, and while the size of the group varies from trip to trip, you’re sure to make some excellent travel buddies during your trip
  • Exciting destinations:  Topdeck offers tours all over the world with fun and exciting  trips  available in all of them!

Topdeck choice of tours by continents and regions

Topdeck reviews

Even if all of Topdeck’s main features sound like the perfect fit for you, it’s never a bad idea to read up on other travelers’ experiences. On  tourradar , Topdeck has a rating of 4.6/5 stars spread out over more than 4,500 reviews. This is pretty indicative that many travelers are happy with their Topdeck tours!

The most recent low star reviews are in relation to the Coronavirus pandemic, including comments indicating that Topdeck didn’t issue refunds to customers whose trips were canceled, but vouchers instead. They have since added a  flexibility promise  for all tours booked before 30 September 2021, which includes Covid-19 related assurances.

Topdeck double decker buses

What can Topdeck do better?

  • Jam-packed itineraries:  Topdeck tours involve lots of early mornings, large travel distances, and sometimes very little time between cities. This means you can’t really explore each city at your own pace and will be forced to fit your sightseeing dreams into the already planned schedule
  • No customization:  Since Topdeck operates group tours with set itineraries, you can’t opt-out of a city, or choose to add on an additional day trip if you wanted. Some travelers have commented that the accommodations weren’t what they had expected (be sure to double-check if you’ve booked a hotel or a hostel trip, as these will have different accommodation packages)
  • Not all meals are included:  One frequent remark from travelers is that while some meals are included in your booking, they aren’t all. This means you might need to budget more for those additional meals, so be sure to check the meal inclusions when you book
  • Hidden costs:  While Topdeck tours do come with some included experiences, most entrance fees or top sights you might want to visit are not included in your tour price. Topdeck does a great job of getting you to must-see places, but they don’t necessarily include the must-see sights.
  • Big group travel:  Some of Topdeck’s tours can have up to 48 travelers, so if you prefer intimate group travel settings, many of their tours won’t be a good fit for you.

Topdeck slogan and motto

How much are Topdeck tours?

Prices for a Topdeck tour will depend on the dates you want to travel, where you want to go, and the duration of the trip. Longer tours will cost more. You can explore Bali on a seven-day trip for as little as $806, or spend 36 days in Europe starting at $7,249. At the time of writing this post, the shortest trip offered by Tourdeck runs for four days, while the longest runs for 36.

In addition to the tour price, you will be responsible for the cost of your flights, visas (if required), additional meals, and entrance fees to non-included excursions.

Occasionally, Topdeck offers  deals  you can take advantage of to save some money. There are also discounts available for returning travelers, people booking a trip with a friend, and those who book multiple trips at once!

Canceling a Topdeck tour

If you booked a Topdeck tour but can’t go for any reason, you must cancel your trip in writing via email. Once you cancel, you will be charged a cancellation fee, which will depend on how many days prior to your trip you’re canceling. If you cancel over 60 days before the start of your trip, you will be charged no fees. There is, at the date of publication, no information on their website about refunds outside of Covid-19 related refunds.

Topdeck contact info

If you have any questions that can’t be answered with their live chat function online, you can pick up the phone and call Topdeck the old-fashioned way! Depending on where you’re located, the numbers will vary, so check  here  for your local number.

Editoral Review of Topdeck

Founded in 1973, Topdeck has been providing fun, adventurous trips around the world for 18-39 for over 40 years.

What Makes Topdeck Travel Stand Out?

Topdeck tour focuses on providing friendly and authentic guided group tours where like-minded 18-39 year old travelers can have amazing group experiences. There are several trip types to choose from, from camping, to immersive, to multi destination, to sailing.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Topdeck?

Sociable, adventurous, budget conscious 18-39 year olds are the kinds of traveler who will gravitate to Topdeck. Though they offer a few different distinct travel styles, there is definitely a sense of an ongoing party, with travel as the conduit and underlying shared interest.

If the idea of being around a group of similarly aged people - many of whom may be exploring internationally for the first or second time - being spontaneous, and meeting locals (often in the environment of bars or clubs) is unappealing, then Topdeck may not be your cup of tea.

Introverted travelers, or those for whom an extensively planned itinerary including many museums and historical sites is ideal, may want to hunt around before choosing a Topdeck tour.

That is not to dissuade the more observational traveler - who may very well find a group they gel with perfectly on a Topdeck tour. Only to caution that you will be surrounded by several extroverted personalities.

The bottom line is if you are game for anything, are traveling on a budget, and don’t mind fairly basic but comfortable accommodations and inexpensive meals - sometimes on the go - then you will enjoy the Topdeck tour experience.

Top Destinations

Topdeck has tours throughout the world, in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Topdeck Travel Style

The Topdeck travel style is tied quite specifically to their audience. These tours are great for youthful and energetic 18-39 year olds looking for a good time and to make new friends.

In the interest of keeping their tours affordable, travelers with Topdeck will need to make a few allowances. For example, hostels and hotels may be situated quite far away from the city centers. You can also expect some long travel days. The more of a good sense of humor and adventure you have, the more you’ll enjoy the experience.

Why Choose a Tour With Topdeck

Feeling the urge to connect with travelers in your age group, have fun, and make lasting friendships? Topdeck has over 40 years of experience in adventure travel, which has helped them create epic low cost trips for 18-30 somethings.

These tours are certainly not for those who prefer to take things slow. You will be running around, moving between a lot of places - which in some cases means very long bus rides - going out a lot, meeting new people, and staying active throughout your tour.

If your ideal travel experience is more methodical and planned out in nature, Topdeck may not be for you.

But if you are an adventurous and social travelers eager to absorb a new culture and make new friends, then hop on board!

Do I need Travel Insurance?

TopDeck recommend getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy which covers you for all medical expenses (including repatriation) and any expensive items you bring away with you such as laptops, tablets, smart phones and cameras. Check the policy wording and excess limits before you book and make sure they are to your satisfaction. Travel insurance should be taken out at the time of booking in case of unforeseen events which may lead you to cancel your trip.

For more information, please visit the Travel Insurance page of this website, where you can find more tips about what to look for in a policy and search for a policy from World Nomads.

Contiki vs. Topdeck: Which Operator is Right For You?

topdeck travel

You’re young, you’re wild, you’re free.   Of course you want to have fun, but you also want to experience different cultures… maybe even go camping or check out a European music festival.

Seeing the world is a must, but you don’t know which operator can make your #yolo dreams come true. Don’t fret, my 18 to 30 something-year-old friend, Contiki and Topdeck have got you covered! Consider the merits of both operators and pick the dream tour of your choice with the following in mind.

Group size, style and age requirements

Both operators offer a variety of trips that adhere to different travel styles. They both cater to  young adults , so most tours are action-packed with sightseeing, local dinners and nightlife options. They each allow you to move at a nonstop pace or take it easier, depending on the experience you’re looking for.

Contiki  offers tours to independent travellers aged  18 to 35 . They have hard upper age limits on their tours and will not allow travellers older or younger than their age bracket to book a trip.

Contiki divides their trips into different classifications that help indecisive travellers determine the right trip for them based on their interests. Contiki’s Europe tours usually have 50 travellers in a group while their USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia tours have an average group size of 30. Their Latin and South America tours offer the most intimate experiences when it comes to group size.

Topdeck also offers tours exclusively to a similar age bracket as Contiki, but welcome  travellers up to 39 years old  as opposed to 35. Topdeck also has very similar group sizes to Contiki, as listed above. Their travel styles differ slightly based on the accommodation style, destination and bucket list highlight. The different styles vary from hotel or festival-focused trips to camping and sailing trips.

Accommodation

Neither operator will charge you a mandatory single supplement for any of their tours. The standard and style of accommodation varies depending on the tour. Each operator might place you in a hotel, a hostel, a campsite or somewhere else entirely. Both operators do make an effort to use local accommodations (think locally run hostels and chalets) where possible.

Transportation

Depending on the destination it can vary, but in general both operators offer large branded coaches and sometimes specialised transport, such as local ferries, trains and even flights. Throughout Europe, the coach/buses of both companies have onboard bathrooms, free wifi and reclinable seats.

Destinations

Contiki  offers tours to the following locations:  Europe ,  Asia ,  North America ,  Australia ,  New Zealand , and  Latin America .

Topdeck  tours travel to:  North America ,  Australia ,  New Zealand ,  the Middle East , and  North Africa ,  Africa ,  Asia  and  Europe .

Generally speaking, the main difference in locations offered is that Contiki can take you to Latin America while Topdeck instead offers trips to the Middle East and Africa.

Contiki   and  Topdeck  offer very similar pricing structures. Contiki has 302 tours to choose from and Topdeck offers 288 tours. The most popular destination of choice for travellers is definitely Europe.

With Contiki, you’ll be paying a slightly higher price per day with the average cost working out to  USD $184/day , while Topdeck’s average sits at  USD $163/day .

Generally speaking, Contiki’s price per day is higher because they include more scheduled activities in their itineraries while Topdeck allows for more free time.
