The Prodigy announce 2023 UK tour and tell us what the future holds

"The Prodigy will continue to ignite, uplift and destroy just as we always did," Liam Howlett tells NME

The Prodigy have announced details of a 2023 UK tour, as well as telling NME about the band’s plans to “continue to ignite, uplift and destroy”. Check out dates below, along with our interview Liam Howlett.

  • READ MORE:   Keith Flint, 1969-2019: the twisted face of rave, the beating heart of The Prodigy

The band suffered the loss of frontman Keith Flint when he took his own life back in 2019, aged 49. Last year, the surviving members of the band hit the road for  their first live tour since Flint’s death – incorporating a tribute to the icon during ‘Firestarter ‘ in their high-octane set.

“We really felt the crowd were there to support us and give us the energy back and we are eternally grateful for that,” Howlett told NME . “It was highly emotional and very special. Flinty will never leave us; he is embedded deep in the soul of this band and his energy will be felt in the music and through us onstage. That’s what i know and feel.”

In  a five-star review of their gig in Liverpool ,  NME wrote: “Uniting a misfit crowd of ravers and metalheads alike to celebrate life and legacy, their flame is burning brighter than ever. Not only are The Prodigy back, they’re here to reclaim their throne.”

Now, off the back of a long run of comeback shows and international festival headline dates, the rave rock legends have announced the ‘Army Of The Ants’ tour – a run of winter UK shows in Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Cardiff and Birmingham and London, where they’ll be supported by Soft Play (formerly known as Slaves ).

As we look ahead to what’s next, The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett answered some questions for NME about honouring Flint, their new stage show, their legacy, and what to expect from new material.

Hello Liam. How have you found the recent shows and the audience’s reaction?

Recommended.

Howlett : “It was better than we ever hoped it would be. It took a lot of heartfelt discussions between me and Maxim to get to the point of getting back on stage. Sometimes we wanted to, then we didn’t – but ultimately we felt it was fukin’ important to us, however hard and emotional it was gonna be, it had to be for the right reason. We wanted to honour our brother Keef but do it in the right way. The whole tour was epic for us. It was so emotionally charged, uplifting, sonically violent… Everything we love.

“I wanna personally say thank you to everybody that came to those shows. I spoke to people that came from Australia just to see us, all over the fukin’ place. I respect you all for the love and support. You made it great.

“As for the future, The Prodigy is bigger than just the band: it stands for something, the people know this, we know this …. even more after playing live again. I’m energised by that and we are back in the studio writing new tunes. The prodigy will continue to ignite, uplift and destroy just as we always did.”

What can you tell us about the sound and energy of the new material, and when can we expect to hear it?

“I think I finally realised that I can’t write new finished Prodigy music unless we are doing gigs and [are] out there submerged in it. The best time to write for me is after I come off stage – that’s when the clearest vision is. The sweat and peoples faces are fresh in my mind, the feeling is present – know what i mean ?

“So yeah, I’ve been in the studio writing loads of beats and pieces but now we are back on tour it’s easier to feel what is the strongest shit and smash that into new tunes. I always write Prodigy music with a strong vision of us playin’ it live onstage .. nothing else comes into it.

“Keef always used to say, ‘In the studio the music is 2D, but when it hits the stage it becomes 3D. Playin’ it live brings it to fuckin’ life ’ – and he was right.”

What are you planning for this next tour to shake things up?

“Whatever we do, we will always make sure we fully represent what we have always been about: integrity, respect and to bring maximum ruckus… That’s what this band exists for.”

Why did you choose Soft Play as support?

“Because they are fucking great – simply that.”

You recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of ‘The Fat Of the Land’. What do you remember about the mood in the camp when you were writing and making that album?

“We were touring a lot so we were always busy, bizniz as usual , just writing the album. ‘Firestarter’ did come out a while before the album, but I had already written most of it. We were just getting on with what we were doing and staying focussed.”

Did you sense that you were making a game-changing record?

“I knew ‘Firestarter’ was something that people hadn’t heard before for sure, also ‘Breathe’. We were just on fire really and properly on the attack.”

How would you describe the character or spirit of the record?

“Atomic.”

How did it feel to be so at odds with Britpop, but embraced by the likes of Oasis and the music media at large?

“It fuelled us, we thrived off it. We always loved to be the underdogs because we knew we could destroy any band onstage – but much the same as Oasis were always ‘The People’s Band’, so were we too on our side of the fence. That’s what we always knew.”

The Prodigy announce 2023 UK tour dates

“WE’RE COMIN BACK FOR U THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW , FULL ATTACK MODE , DOUBLE BARREL ...”

Photo of The Prodigy performing on stage with strobing red lights and a packed crowd

The Prodigy have announced dates for a live tour across the UK in November.

The seven-date ‘Army Of The Ants’ tour will kick off in Glasgow on 16th November 2023 and head to Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Cardiff, and Birmingham before ending the UK leg at Alexandra Palace in London on 24th November.

News of the tour was announced back in October , with the band tweeting: “To all Prodigy warriors, we are here to tell you we are coming back to rock it live in 2023... Get ready for the new wave of fire.” It will follow a long stint of comeback shows and European festival headline dates this summer, including Belsonic (30th June), Exit Festival (6th July), Mad Cool (8th July), and Dreambeach (9th-13th August).

The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett said: “‘ARMY OF THE ANTS’ IS A CALLING TO THE PRODIGY PEOPLES , WE’RE COMIN BACK FOR U THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW , FULL ATTACK MODE , DOUBLE BARREL ... “

Last year, the band returned to live music for the first time since the death of frontman Keith Flint in March 2019, completing a sold-out UK tour that began in Sheffield and culminated in three nights at Brixton Academy. The group paid tribute to Flint at each show, dedicating the tour to him and honouring him during a special performance of ‘Firestarter’ at their final show in London. The Prodigy have voiced their support for the campaign to save the iconic Brixton venue.

In March, The Prodigy marked the fourth anniversary of Flint’s death , with members Liam Howlett and Maxim describing his spirit as “living, breathing and snarling deep within the beats, bass and heart of the band, unfadeable and undeniable.”

The Prodigy will also be headlining three shows in Ireland this summer, with drum & bass giant Andy C set to play support at each date. The first date is set for Cork's historic Musgrave Park on 28th June, with the mini-tour then going on to hit Fairview Park in Dublin on 29th June before finally touching down in Belfast for Belsonic festival on 30th June. The band also released a 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of the 1997 album ‘The Fat of the Land’ in November, with a new drum & bass remix of ‘Firestarter’ by Andy C.

Tickets to the ‘Army Of The Ants’ tour go on general sale at 9.30AM on Friday 16th June here . More info is available via The Prodigy’s website .

Event Details

The Prodigy have announced a live tour across the UK for November - the Army of the Ants Tour 2023. The 7 date run steps things up a gear and takes Liam H and Maxim back into arena sized venues.

The July 22 tour, which saw them tear up 3 nights at O2 Academy Brixton, was their first without their brother, the iconic Keith Flint. The way Liam H and Maxim incorporated and paid tribute to Keiths everlasting legacy with the live show was truly powerful. It was met with great support and love of their legions of fans across the country.

With a solid spring and summer run of international festival headline dates now underway, the band are looking forward to bringing the fire back to key UK cities once again. Kicking off in Glasgow on November 16th they’ll hit up Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Cardiff and Birmingham before ending the UK leg at Alexandra Palace in London on Friday November 24th.

The Prodigy will be supported by SOFT PLAY, the British punk duo formerly known as Slaves. After being on hiatus for several years, Laurie Vincent and Isaac Holman have reignited their partnership under a new moniker, and their time on the road with The Prodigy will mark the band's much anticipated return to touring.

Rising out from Essex, UK, The Prodigy have become one of the biggest electronic acts for over the past 20 years.

Hard-hitting UK electronica act, The Prodigy, have been wowing audiences with their incendiary live performance since 1990, with their punishing mishmash of rave, hardcore techno, jungle, breakbeat and rock/punk influences. The group currently consists of members Liam Howlett (founder, keyboardist and composer), Keith Flint (dancer and vocalist), Leo Crabtree (drums), Rob Holliday (lead guitarist) and Maxim (MC and vocalist). The Prodigy have sold over 25 million records worldwide, becoming known as 'the premiere dance act for the alternative masses.'

The Prodigy achieved success early on in the UK, with their single "Charly" reaching number three in the UK SIngles Chart in 1991. Their first full length, "Experience" (1992) also achieved critical acclaim, with its singles "Everybody in The Place," "Out of Space" and "Fire/Jericho" becoming big hits on the UK rave scene.

It was not until their release of "The Fat of the Land" (1997) that Prodigy broke into the international market, with their single "Firestarter" becoming a huge hit, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart. The album featured a heavier, more punk/rock influenced sound that attracted fans outside of the electronica scene, becoming a big crossover hit and helping The Prodigy to become one of the most successful acts in the dance genre. Their music was not without controversy however, with their single "Smack My Bitch Up" attracting much criticism for its lyrical content supposedly promoting violence against women. The music video was particularly extreme, featuring a first-person viewpoint as the protagonist indulges in drugs and alcohol before embarking on a wild night clubbing.

The Prodigy have achieved continued success, with a short hiatus in 1999 before reuniting in 2002. Their record, "Invaders Must Die" (2009) charted at humber one in the UK within the first week, as well as reaching the top ten in several other countries. Their live performances have become stuff of legend, often featuring dramatic light shows and pyrotechnics, becoming huge favourites on the global festival circuit, headlining many festivals every summer.

Live reviews

Saw The Prodigy play Capital FM arena in Nottingham a few days ago as part of their 'The Day is my Enemy' tour. The show was pretty explosive as some would say. From start to finish it was a non-stop wall of noise (good noise) and flashing lights creating a rather intense knackering experience. In terms of their set they played a healthy mix of their greatest hits and songs off their rather good latest album.

Out of transparency I would say that I'm a decent Prodigy fan, I've listened to only 2 of their albums and have heard a greatest hits playlist before, but I found that I knew virtually every song they played.

Obviously, classics like Firestarter, Omen and Breathe had the whole stadium rocking and shouting along. And for songs that I knew less well it didn't really matter as everyone was bouncing along; I would say that you will need to be a fan or at least neutral to a mosh pits with the front half of the arena featuring minimum of 3 from what I could sort of see when being flung about (the biggest felt like it encompassed a solid 5th of the arena).

If you like to get as close to the band as you can at a gig but are a bit tardy then this is perfect for you, I started around the halfway mark and ended up 3 people deep from the front (via the multiple mosh pits on route). It was absolute carnage.

The crowd was an interesting mix, there were some rather fearsome looking ravers (who were perfectly fine) and a whole assortment of ages (from teens experiencing their 1st Prodigy concert to their parents who clearly knocked about back in the day).

There were a few complaints: as others have documented this is a notoriously late band and lived up to their rep by being 30 minutes late (annoying when you need to pee and not sure just how late they will be and funny considering their support Public Enemy were 5 minutes early); National Ice Arena doesn't have the greatest sound quality and their screens are rather small (but annoying for people further back); finally my friend ending up doing in his knee meaning I missed 15 mins and watched the final 3rd from the seating area. The last 2 complaints have nothing to do with The Prodigy to be fair.

Overall, I would say it had the potential to have been one of the best gigs I've been to (if only my friend had a sturdier knee). If you're a Prod fan then obviously you should go and I would say if you're a casual fan (like myself) or a dance fan or a fan of intense gigs then I'd say it's definitely worth the punt.

Prodigious. Truer words were never spoken.

I think trying to define a Prodigy gig is trying to analyse an explosion. Good luck.

My experience of The Prodigy was as headliners of Download 2012 and the uproar before their appearance was deafening. An electronic artist? At a rock festival? Sacrilege. I (after having my mind erased and replaced after listening to Invaders Must Die) was quite looking forward to the spectacle, seeing some variety like this at Download is uncommon.

Suffice to say, after there departure 2 hours later, not only was the unsure converted but my expectations were surpassed. After a day of harsh music, the kind of pounding, positive, fists-in-the-air electro-rock flooding onto us was just what I needed. I can safely say that I have never (and not been since) been in a "dance pit" before and being urinated upon (don't ask) didn't dampen the mood either.

The standout moments of the night were classic stompers "World's On Fire" and "Breathe" starting off the night and hits like "Take Me To The Hospital" and "Firestarter" keeping energy up throughout the set. By the time "Their Law" rolled around to close their set, I was disappointed, I wanted more!

In short, if you are, in any way, in love with music, seeing The Prodigy would be a no-brainer and a must for your to-watch list.

Ah Prodigy are nuts!! In a totally awesome way. I remember getting their Fat of the Land CD as part of my Columbia House 12 CDs for $12 deal and was non stop listening to it. Then proceeded to purchase their earlier albums as well in order to constantly blast their outrageous, hard hitting sounds. I never had the opportunity to see them as a kid and always regretted it. Luckily I saw them for their Invaders Must Die tour, being a college graduate, and it totally brought back those great memories and intense songs that I always loved. Keith Flint the lead singer/dancer didn't stop jumping around for the entire 2 hour set. He got everyone else doing it too. Every Prodigy song makes you want to rage and just get crazy. It was the highest energy show and I left feeling like I had shots of adrenaline pumped into my veins. So much fun!

Absolutely amazing to see live would definitely recommend them to anyone!

I’ll be certainly be going to see them again when they tour next. Unbelievable show!

The best song for me was either fire or take me to the hospital cos they’re classics and my favourite songs by them so it was brilliant to see them perform those.

I’d personally recommend standing for it cos it was amazing to be in a proper moshpit and dancing around for the whole time so would recommend standing for sure.

5* would recommend them to anyone! If you’re contemplating going to see them just go would not even question it!

I love Prodigy! They are my favorities!

I listen to their music since 1998.

But I was never before on a Prodigy concert and I was exited to listen to them live.

I was together my girlfriend.

They were more than 1,5 hours late and till then we had to listen to some DJ's that wasn't a plasure at all.

Also we were in the center of the stage (the bottom side from the first part of the stage) but the sound was bad. Due to the lack of VIP-zone there were to many people in the front of the stage.

The concert didn't meet our expectations.

It was a spectacular show, with insane lights. I loved the videos on he wallscreens and listening to the new material live! I'm not sure if it's the venue but the sound was not good. I couldn't enjoy any song. Moreover, although the lights were amazing, they made it hard for me to see the stage. My eyes were hurting. As for the band, I'd love to see them having a different act on stage for a change, they've been doing the same thing for years... I'd like to see them again but I'd probably choose another venue.

Mental, mental, mental, mental, mental. Then another song came on mental, mental, mental, mental mental, mental. Then another song started mental, mental, mental, mental, mental. This was pretty much it. About 2 thirds through the set something happened that I have never experienced at a gig. There was a bass sound wave that came from the stage that was so deep the the sound wave it created blew the hairs on my arms on end. Mental. Great night & great scenes fair play to you Plymouth crew you owned it !!!!

Fantastic gig at the GMEX last night. The Prodigy were on top form, with a good selection from the back catalogue. Public Enemy were real crowd pleasers as well - Flava Flav on a hoverboard was a sight worth seeing.

The crowd were as boisterous as ever although I could have done without the morons smoking cigarettes & cigars in the venue.

Second time I've seen The Prodigy this year & hoping to catch them again next year.

Highly recommended.

From the opening bars of Omen the chaos commenced. Absolute madness from my position of middle front but wouldn't have had it any other way. The Prodigy did not disappoint, delivering all the well known hits mixed in with a few new ones. You definitely do not stay still and have to move with the crowd but I love it. This was my 10th Prodigy gig and I cannot wait for the 11th.

What an amazing show...waited a long time to see, hear and feel the fullness of how truly awesome the band was and is!

Apart from the parking fee, ridiculously overpriced refreshments and food, lack of air con (the hook line and sinker for purchasing everything) the experience was everything we expected and more.

We now can, tick this off the bucket list...Thanx!

ROCK band Pantera have announced they will be heading out on a UK tour for the first time in over 20 years.

The rock group, which first formed in 1981, have become one of the most defining groups of the metal genre.

Pantera were huge but split in 2004 after huge fight between the bandmates

Their hits include Walk, Cowboys From Hell, and Cemetery Gates

After decades of hardships and tragedy, the band are still going strong, and are due to perform at Download Festival this weekend.

But if you can't make it down to Donnington Park, the band will be heading off on a UK tour this February.

The group is currently composed of vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, alongside touring musicians Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.

List of artists bands and acts confirmed for Glastonbury 2024

Their original drummer and lead guitarist - brothers 'Dimebag' Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott - have both tragically died in the years since the band was most active.

In one of the most shocking concert moments of all time, Dimebag was killed on stage in December 2004 while performing alongside Vinnie in the band, Damageplan. He was 38 years old.

Vinnie and Dimebag had created Damageplan following the original dissolution of Pantera, which had occurred in 2003.

The break-up of the band was far from amicable, with all members making disapraging remarks about the others publicly in the fallout.

This included threats of violence to accusations of heroin abuse.

It is believed that 25-year-old Nathan Gale, who committed the attack on Dimebag, did so out of anger for Pantera splitting up.

Dimebag was shot multiple times by a fan who stormed the stage, with Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson, the band's head of security, also being killed in the fray.

A member of the venue's staff and another fan was also killed.

Several others, including their longtime roadie John 'Kat' Brooks, were injured as they tried to subdue the gunman.

In the years that followed, Vinnie - heralded as one of the best drummers of all time by Rolling Stone - continued to perform in other bands after the death of his brother.

Most notable was supergroup Hellyeah before his death in 2018 from coronary artery disease at the age of 54.

Pantera reunited officially in 2022, with Anselmo and Brown returning to their positions in the band.

"We're gonna be on that Olympic team" - Carl Lewis' prodigy Louie Hinchliffe shared the first impactful words of his coach

L ouie Hinchliffe, the Carl Lewis-mentored athlete from the University of Houston, flew to the 100m victory at the 2024 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Hours after his win, he shed light on the words of his coach, Lewis, that impacted his career greatly.

Louie Hinchliffe, 21, was first registered with the University of Washington, where he earned the 2022 English National title and recorded the then-personal best time of 10.23s in Walnut, California. At the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Sheffield sprinter finished 20th in the 100m, way behind the defending champion from Africa, Shaun Maswanganyi.

Now teammates Maswanganyi and Hinchliffe competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, where the latter clocked the fastest time of the year , running in 9.84s. The former finished second in 9.89s.

Hinchliffe has shown a remarkable transition from last year's stints to the successes he achieved in 2024. Mentored by the nine-time Olympic champion, who changed the dynamics of the track for the better, the Houston Cougars athlete expressed gratitude to the legendary Carl Lewis for his one-line advice that changed the course of Hinchliffe's life.

In an interview with Chancellor Johnson, Louie Hinchliffe shed light on how the first conversation between the mentor and mentee was enough to give the athlete the hint.

"It was the first conversation we had when I called him. He was like, the first thing he said to me was like, 'We're gonna be on that Olympic team', so it was since then, that first conversation that I start believe in him since then. It just led to this moment which is crazy."

After the 100m win at the NCAA Championships, the British sprinter thought it was 'surreal' and credited the high-pressure environment for bringing the best out of him.

"He's got to go to the Olympic trials" - Carl Lewis confirmed that Louie Hinchliffe will be on the run for Paris

Carl Lewis dominated track and field from 1979 to 1996 and retired with 10 World Champion titles, nine Olympic golds, and a multitude of laurels across his illustrious career.

After coaching Louie Hinchliffe and watching him claim victorious podiums , Lewis felt prepared to take his tutee to the Olympic trials. In a recent interview with CITIUS Mag, the retired Olympian said:

" He's got to go to the Olympic trials, which is the 29th of the month, and I'll go with him to go there, and then what we'll do is we'll take off a few days and then we'll get back into training, slow things down to prepare for that, and that's only a one-day meet it's great."

Hinchliffe will next compete at the UK Athletics Championships Manchester 2024 from 29-30 June, to be in contention in Paris.
