What people love about Saudi Arabia Tours

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Considering this was a budget tour, the hotels, clean, comfortable rooms and bathrooms with good breakfasts. As we were only a group of 4 we travelled by car with a guide/driver. Salman in Riyadh was exceptional. What I appreciated most was the availability of Neis via WhatsApp or email. We had the odd hiccup which could be easily resolved. Great customer service. If opting for the Bahrain extension and traveling across the border by road, its very easy to obtain the visa at the border and you can even pay with Saudi currency – which is widely accepted in Bahrain. Tours in Bahrain are limited or quite costly, but we found it easy to get around to the places we wanted to see with Uber – efficient and reasonable prices. As I didn’t have global roaming I purchased an Esim in both of the countries – also simple and cheap.
Very uncomfortable small bus did not have enough room for our 9 guests, 3 translators, guide and driver, even on excursions where we only brought day-bags (rather than entire luggage); uncomfortable seats and NOT ENOUGH LEG ROOM for taller non-local Westerners, worthless torn cloth blinds on the windows that could not be securely open or closed. Each of our 3 translators (who also served as guides for the tour overall) was GREAT! Consistently helpful, capable and personable; very positive attitudes and considerate individuals: 5+ stars for them! Local guides were also consistently great, although there was an ugly scene between our Jeddah(?) guide and our driver, leading to a verbal argument and the guide stomping off the bus.
Saudi Arabia is a fabulous part of the world and the tour makes the most of scenery and local culture. There is quite a lot of travelling, but well worth it to see the highlights. The small group environment and excellent guide were typical of other holidays we have had with Explore, and likely to keep us coming back. I would recommend others to book same trip and to Explore Saudi Arabia

"This was a great experience that I would certainly recommend to anyone (I did have a few issues, though, more on that below). The main tour guide, Naveed, did a solid job running the tour. In each city, we had a separate guide that led us through the area and every one of those presenters did a fabulous job. This is a great way to experience the major highlights of Saudi Arabia. A good chunk of the tour consists of driving from one city to the next, a distance that usually took about 4-6 hours to cover. The van we traveled in was comfortable, and I loved seeing the more remote parts of the country. I did have a few problems on my tour, however. I was scammed by a taxi driver when I first arrived in the country: long story short, the scammer was the first person I saw right after I exited customs, and he claimed he was my transfer to the hotel sent by the tour company. I told him I needed to find someone with the sign that had my name, but this individual wouldn't not leave me alone: he aggressively followed me through the arrival area, eventually handing me a cell phone with an English speaker on the other end, who said that the tour company had sent that driver and that I would be reimbursed. Sure enough, this driver had nothing to do with the tour, and come to find out, my actual driver was waiting at the complete other end of the terminal. THE ACTUAL DRIVER FOR KURBAN TOURS NEEDED TO BE MORE OBVIOUS. There were also issues regarding dinner reservations at the hotels, namely, the tour company said that the dinner was included, but the restaurant and reception desks had no idea that the meals were purchased. This is probably not the fault of the tour company; this is more than likely a growing pain for Saudi Arabia's fledgling tourist industry. While the itinerary was, overall, well-planned, there were a few spots that need refining. In Al Ula, we had over two hours of free time... but there was nothing to do in the area we were dropped off at beside hanging out at Kudu (the Saudi Arabian equivalent of Burger King). On our day tour of Jeddah, a good chunk of time was wasted due to the Friday prayers (I'm not sure how they could solve that one, but the squandered moments were certainly unfortunate). Overall, though, this was a great tour with great leaders operating it. Issues and bumps aside, I would happily recommend this package to anyone.

"It was extremely difficult once I paid for the trip to get accurate information from the company, to include verification of hotels, guides, etc. Initially, the dates were wrong on the site and I struggled to get the correct ones I paid for listed. It was not until about a week before the trip that the company understood I had paid for an extra day. The whole process was the most challenging for any trip I have ever taken. I notified the company I did not have WhatApp and asked for information via email. I emailed prior to leaving the US and while in transit asking who was picking me up - no answer. When I arrived in Riyadh, no one was there, I looked around, asked information, waited and waited, then paid myself to get to the hotel. Apparently, the company sent me a text (I told them my email was my only communication method) with the name and contact number which I asked for well in advance and this was NEVER provided. I was not reimbursed for this taxi I had to pay for even though the package included airport transfer. Also, as noted below, there was sites that were closed, and I was not reimbursed for these even though the tour fee included entrance to these sites. I definitely would not recommend this company. I sent the following to the company while there:  Riyadh - on Oct 6, I was to be picked up at 05:00 hours, at 05:05 I called Abdullah and he had not left home. He arrived 05:30 hrs and drove 110-120 kph to get to the airport by 06:05 hrs, the alarm on his car for high speed went off several times. I never received a refund for the taxi I had to pay for - will this be credited to my account? Abdullah was on his phone a lot during the tour and did not seem to know when Souq opened, we were there early and it was closed. We did wait until some of it opened. Abha - the itinerary could not be followed since almost everything is closed (long term, not just the day) and Mohammed said he told you and company this several times. We just drove around and could not visit almost anything. As part of my tour package, I paid the entrance fees and could not participate. This whole stop was a waste of my time and I was really looking forward to this stop. I am not sure if there are other things to see, but this should be changed on the itinerary. Will I get a refund since I could not visit sites that may have had entrance fees? - cable cars - closed (optional items listed) - Shada Castle - closed - Muftaha Village - closed - El Sahab Park - closed and fenced off since the government is going to make a tourist area Jeddah - Saad was an EXCELLENT guide and today was a great day! He explained things we drove by (the guides in Riyadh and Abha did not), we walked a lot to see things especially in the old town and along the Corniche and stopped for pictures, etc. He answered my questions. Today made the trip to Saudi Arabia worth it. I understand tourism is new to Saudi Arabia and I have now been to 86 countries so I know everything does not go correctly on a trip. My biggest complaint is the agenda is Abha which could not be followed and it is not fair to people to publish an agenda that is not valid.

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is during the winter (from November to February) when temperatures are around 22°C to 28°C and it’s comfortable enough to spend long periods of time outside. Saudi Arabia’s climate is classified as arid desert, so this means extremely hot summers (it’s not advisable to travel during this time).

Culture and customs

Saudi Arabia is a highly conservative country when it comes to social rules and there is an expectation for men and women to dress modestly like in the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia in general is influenced by Arab and Islamic culture with a core focus on faith, traditional roles and a family-orientated mindset.

Music and dance are a feature of everyday life, with traditional instruments played and dances performed at celebrations and cultural holiday festivities. Along with the thriving arts scene in Saudi Arabia, sport is huge throughout the kingdom with football (soccer) being the most popular.

History and government

Saudi Arabia shares a lot of its early history with much of the Arabian Peninsula, experiencing the rise of Islam in the 7 th century and the establishment of Muslim states in the 15 th century. However, due to its remote location and poverty, the country remained somewhat isolated from the general military and political trends from the 16th century onwards.

Fast forward to the 18 th century when the Saud dynasty (house of rulers in the 18 th and 19 th centuries) came into power, conquering much of Arabia until their defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Sultan and the Viceroy of Egypt in 1818. A second Saudi state was created by members of the Saud dynasty in 1824 but civil wars eventually ensued after succession disputes and the state fell out of Saudi hands until 1902. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was royally decreed in 1932 and is still ruled by the monarchy, with a judicial system that's based on Islamic law (Shari'ah).

Eating and drinking

Saudi Arabian cuisine draws influences from surrounding Persian Gulf countries, but religion plays a role in culinary practices too. For instance, as per Islam, Muslims don’t eat pork or drink alcohol and other meats like lamb, beef and chicken has to be prepared in a specific way (halal).

But there are plenty of traditional meat dishes that locals love and that travellers to the country must try. Kebabs are big in Saudi Arabia and so is shwarma, both made with meat (such as chicken or lamb) that’s been roasted on a spit and served, either by itself or in pita bread as a sandwich.

Saudi Arabians also eat a lot of seafood, particularly fish and shrimp, so you’ll likely see dishes like machbous (rice with seafood) on most restaurant menus. Also be prepared to eat flat bread with every meal, followed by a selection of fruit (usually dates, watermelon and grapes) as dessert.

To wash it all down, locals love to drink coffee in the traditional Turkish way.

Geography and environment

Saudi Arabia is situated in Western Asia, bordering the Red Sea on the west, Yemen and Oman on the south, the United Arab Emirates and the Persian Gulf on the east and Iraq and Jordon on the north.

Its terrain is largely uninhabited sandy desert with frequent sand and dust storms. Saudi Arabia is rich in natural resources including petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold and cooper, and due to the production of these materials, the country experiences a range of environmental issues such as ground, water and air pollution, as well as extreme fossil fuel usage, deforestation and desertification.

If it’s shopping you’re after, you can’t go past two of Saudi Arabia’s biggest cities: Riyadh and Jeddah. Both cities have upscale shopping centres and department stores you can easily get lost in, as well as local markets full of traditional ingredients and souvenirs.

Popular shopping locations in Riyadh for both luxury lovers and families:

  • Centria Mall
  • Kingdom Centre
  • Al Nakheel Mall
  • Granada Mall
  • Souq Makkah

Popular shopping locations in Jeddah for both bargain hunters and electronic fiends:

  • Mall of Arabia
  • Read Sea Mall
  • Jeddah International Shopping Center
  • Al Balad district
  • Gabel Street Souq

Saudi Arabia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Why is Intrepid launching a trip to Saudi Arabia now?

Saudi Arabia opened its doors to international tourism in 2019 and we know that many of our travellers are curious about visiting there. Our aim was to create a trip that would offer our customers unique and authentic experiences that have a positive impact on local communities, particularly women.

With their emphasis on local interaction and cultural insights, we felt Women’s Expeditions was our ideal first product in Saudi. We carried out firsthand research on the ground, including speaking to local people from all walks of life. As with all Women’s Expeditions, the trip creates opportunities for local female leaders and guides while also supporting women-owned and operated businesses across our supply chain.

Do I need a visa to travel to Saudi Arabia?

As a general rule, travellers will need to obtain a visa before arrival in Saudi Arabia. However, there are a range of nationals that can apply for an eVisa online to make the process as easy as possible, so you don’t need to spend time at embassy and consulate appointments. The visa application process will require you to provide information about your trip, return travel plans and accommodation details and might prompt you for bank account information and employment contracts.

Is tipping customary in Saudi Arabia?

Tipping is common in service-oriented businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and taxis, but it is not routine; but rather a way to show appreciation for good service. It is also not required if a service charge is already included in the bill. Saudis usually tip expatriate service people and individual services in hotels despite the overall service charge. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem usually have a built-in tip option, but you can also tip in cash if you prefer.

Tipping guides, drivers and other tourism services providers is also common and it's a way to show appreciation for their services. It's worth noting that tipping in Saudi Arabia is a cultural and personal decision, and it's always a good idea to follow the local customs and traditions, and to tip in line with your budget and satisfaction with the service received.

What’s the internet access like in Saudi Arabia?

Internet access is widely available in Saudi Arabia, and the country has a well-developed infrastructure for telecommunications. The country's internet penetration rate is quite high and most people have access to high-speed 4G and 5G internet.

The government of Saudi Arabia regulates the internet, and there are some restrictions on access to certain websites and online content, such as those related to political dissent, pornography, gambling, and other sensitive topics. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, are widely used in the country, but they are also subject to government censorship. WhatsApp is commonly used for chat but cannot be used for calls and video calls.

Will my mobile phone work in Saudi Arabia?

Mobile phone networks are widely available in Saudi Arabia and getting a local SIM card for your phone is relatively easy. Upon arrival, you can purchase a SIM card at the airport or at any of the mobile phone stores located in most major cities and towns. The process is straightforward and you will need to provide a passport or a valid ID to register your SIM card.

Can I drink the tap water in Saudi Arabia?

The water supply in the major cities and towns is treated and is safe to drink in theory, but because of older pipe-systems even many locals refrain from doing so. In some rural areas or remote regions, the water may not be treated and may not be safe to drink. It's also worth noting that in some places, the water may have a high mineral content, which can affect its taste and may not be suitable for everyone.

What is ATM access like in Saudi Arabia?

The country has a well-developed banking system, and ATMs are widely available in most cities and towns. You can find ATMs in banks, airports, shopping centres, and other public places.

Most ATMs accept international cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. However, it's always good to check with your bank if your card will work in Saudi Arabia, and also to inform them of your travel plans. You should also note that ATM withdrawal limits may vary depending on the bank and the type of card you are using.

It's also common to find that some ATMs have a limit per transaction, while others have a daily limit, so you may have to withdraw money in multiple transactions.

Are all credit cards accepted in Saudi Arabia?

You can use credit or debit cards, or even international credit cards in most of the shops, restaurants and hotels in Saudi Arabia, however, it's always good to check with the specific establishment if they accept foreign cards.

It's also worth noting that Saudi Arabia was, until recently, a cash-based society, and it's always good to have some cash on hand, especially when travelling to rural or remote areas of the country where access to ATMs and other banking services may be limited.

What are the toilets like in Saudi Arabia?

Western style bathrooms are found all across the country with the same amenities and facilities you’d expect elsewhere.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for female travellers?

It’s generally considered safe for female travellers to visit Saudi Arabia, whether solo or as part of a group as, o verall, the rate of crime in Saudi Arabia is low.

As with any destination, there are a few do’s and don’t’s that all travellers should follow, such as adhering to local laws, dressing appropriately in places of worship and respecting cultural traditions. However, women should behave and dress in a similar way to locals and stick to well-populated areas, especially when venturing out at nighttime.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries. Travellers should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

It's against the law to have sexual relations or live together outside of marriage.

Are there any local laws I should be aware of?

Saudi Arabia welcomes tourists – as with all destinations, travellers to the country should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries.

In general, when it comes to Saudi Arabia's laws and social rules:

  • It is illegal to preach or publicly practice a religion other than Islam.
  • Refrain from questioning religious values or public morals.
  • Don't criticise the country, its royal family or practicing religion in public (including on social media).
  • Dress modestly in public.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Same-sex relationships are illegal. Saudi Arabia does not recognise or allow same-sex marriages and rights.

What should I wear in Saudi Arabia?

Travellers should be aware of the socially conservative rules when it comes to the dress code in Saudi Arabia. It is no longer a legal requirement for women to cover their hair and wear an abaya (long sleeved robe) in Saudi, but w omen should still dress modestly when out and about (especially when visiting places of worship), covering their shoulders, chest and knees, as well as wearing any loose-fitting dresses or pants.

Due to the hot climate in Saudi Arabia, pack lightweight clothing like cotton and linen, so you're not uncomfortable when you're exploring during the day.

Is Saudi Arabia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ rights aren’t recognised in Saudi Arabia and a high degree of caution should be undertaken when travelling. Homosexuality remains illegal and carries a heavy penalty such as imprisonment and deportation.

Additionally, being transgender is not recognised in Saudi Arabia. You will not be able to enter Saudi Arabia if your passport shows 'X' in the gender field. Transgender people could also face difficulties with dress code and access to medical care.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Five Advantages Of Traveling Solo

07 March 2017 By Carlton Ryan

Traveling all alone, on the surface, might sound like a crazy idea. It might seem that traveling solo would make for an experience both lonely and potentially dangerous. However, hardly anything could be further from the truth. While certainly not for everyone, solo traveling can be a rewarding experience and a great way to have an adventure.

At the Heart of the Arabian Peninsula

For centuries the land that now makes up Saudi Arabia has been a mystery to outsiders—but things are changing. At the initiative of the ruling Saud family, the country is opening up and travelers are welcome.

The diversity and breadth of what the kingdom has to offer visitors is astounding. Astonishingly beautiful prehistoric petroglyphs, monumental ancient tombs, outstanding cuisine, medieval oasis villages, and futuristic skyscrapers are all on offer. Beyond the world-class sights, you’ll experience the distinctive places where Saudis lead their daily lives—from bustling bazaars to sacred mosques—and get out into the majestic and surprisingly varied landscapes.

Why travel to Saudi Arabia with MIR

While Saudi Arabia is becoming more welcoming to foreign travelers, a visit to the country can still be challenging. MIR’s guides and travel planners know the nuances of exploring here. They aren’t just experts on the Saudi sights—they’re ambassadors to the culture, dedicated to ensuring that you have a rich and authentic experience. Our new small group tours are filling up quickly–join us!

Travel to the birthplace of Islam on one of our Saudi Arabia group tour. This undiscovered gem encompasses a vast expanse of arid desert and mountains. The second largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria), it covers some 2,150,000 square kilometres and is the only nation with coastlines on both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Home to Mecca and Medina, the Kingdom is the spiritual caretaker of the two holiest shrines in the Islamic world, a role it takes very seriously. Staunchly traditional, the country’s citizens are required by law to be Muslims and it is one of the few places on earth that has a ‘religious’ police force.

But this is also a land with a vibrant cultural pedigree. Away from the glamour and glitter of its oil-rich modern cities, the country is strewn with World Heritage sites and remote mountain villages. Amongst the rock-hewn splendours of Madain Saleh you can find Nabatean treasures on a par with those at Petra, while the mud-brick ruins of Diriyah provide a fascinating insight into the origins of the Saud Dynasty. The mountains of the south-west are home to a surprising collection of traditional villages that still evoke echoes of the past, whilst the haunting ruins of Al Ula provide a chance to explore one of the most impressive ghost towns anywhere in the Middle East.

Enigmatic and intriguing, Saudi Arabia by its very nature is one of the last great adventures left to discover. Be one of the first to discover it on a Wild Frontiers small group tour to Saudi Arabia.

Discover the Nabatean city of Hegra, with its rock-carved buildings, built in the same style as Jordan's Petra.

The souqs of Riyadh

The souqs of Riyadh

Go for a spot of shopping and explore a colourful labyrinth of stalls and walkways making up the many souqs and bazaars of Riyadh.

Visit a volcanic crater

Visit a volcanic crater

Visit the spectacular Al Waba Crater, a dramatic volcano formation with a salt field at its centre. Here there is the option to circumnavigate part of the crater or you may opt for the more challenging steep climb down to the basin and then back up again.

Stand on the edge of the world

Stand on the edge of the world

Embark on a journey through dusty tracks and rocky plains to Jebel Fihrayn, otherwise known as "The Edge of the World." As you ascend by 4x4, you come to a cliff edge that is 300 metres high and 800 kilometres long.

Given the extreme summer heat of the desert, October to March is definitely the optimum time for visiting Saudi Arabia. At these times of year typically you can expect daytime temperatures to reach 20 - 30oC with night times being surprisingly cool, often in the single digits. Rain is rare although not unheard of!

LGBTQIA+ Guidance

When planning to travel as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, there may be additional things you wish to consider doing, such as:

  • Speaking to one of our travel experts for information about travelling in your chosen destination and local attitudes towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Checking the Human Dignity Trust map of countries that criminalise LGBTQIA+ people, which highlights potentially dangerous regions and countries
  • Checking the ‘Local laws and customs’ section of your country's official foreign travel advice page
  • Looking for any updates for your desired destination on the Human Rights Watch LGBTQIA+ rights page
  • Buying a recommended guidebook, as many include an LGBTQIA+ section and advice for LGBTQIA+ travellers

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Saudi Arabia though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Saudi Arabia the official unit of currency is the Saudi Riyal, which is subdivided into 100 halala.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Saudi society is going through some major changes at the moment so please bear in mind that any considerations raised here may alter at any time. Ultimately the Kingdom remains a deeply conservative country and is likely to be different from any other destination to which you may have travelled.

Tourism (other than for religious purposes) is a new concept for the Kingdom so come expecting enthusiastic but inexperienced levels of service. Encouragingly, in contrast to previous edicts, there are no current restrictions placed on adult women travelling solo and while it is expected that foreign visitors will dress conservatively, women will not have to wear an abaya (the long black dress covering the body from shoulders to feet) and they will not have to cover their hair.

Alcohol however is still currently forbidden and should not be brought into the country; you should also not arrive into Saudi Arabia under the influence of alcohol.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country in which Islamic law is strictly enforced. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend.

Public displays of affection are not considered as being consistent with local culture and traditions.

Both men and women are asked to dress modestly in public, avoiding tight fitting clothing or clothes with profane language or images. Women should cover shoulders and knees in public.

The public practice of any form of religion other than Islam is illegal including wearing religious jewellery for example a crucifix.  So please be mindful of anything that may be interpreted as religious iconography.

Language & Religion

In Saudi Arabia, the major language is Arabic, although English is commonly spoken in larger cities. Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country in which Islamic law is strictly enforced and the public practice of any form of religion other than Islam is illegal.

Time

Saudi Arabia is 3 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Food in Saudi Arabia is full of flavour and packed with spices, dishes are often rice-based with flat breads and meats such as lamb, goat, chicken and beef.

Food can vary from region to region, but Kabsah is considered by many to be national dish.  Kabsah compromises of rice, meat, vegetables and a mixture of spices.  The spices can differ depending on location but cloves, cardamom, saffron and nutmeg are often used.  Some varieties may be enhanced with nuts such as peanuts, almonds, pine nuts etc.

Lunch is considered the main meal of the day.  Traditional dishes are preferred but in larger towns a full range of international cuisine is available.  Pork and alcohol are forbidden under Islamic law.

There is a traditional and unique “coffee culture” in the Kingdom.  Offering guests coffee is a display of hospitality and generosity which is very much entrenched in the culture so expect to be served Arabic coffee with nearly all your meals.

It is customary for Saudi coffee to be served from a dallah (coffee pot) in a ritualistic manner. The flavour is very distinctive due to the addition of other elements such as cardamom, cloves or saffron.

Travel company hired by Maryland couple who died in Mecca was 'not in good standing'

by Christian Flores

WASHINGTON (7News) — 7News On Your Side has learned the travel company used by the Bowie, Md., couple who died while completing the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, was "not in good standing" with the Maryland department in charge of business licensing.

Saida Wurie said her parents - Isatu, 65, and Alieu, 71 - died while completing the religious duty in the holiest city for Muslims, and the family was not notified until days later - when they were already buried there.

While she has been trying to figure out the family's next steps, she remembered one of the last things her parents told her.

"Once they got to Saudi Arabia, they realized the travel agency they had used may have been fraudulent or just a scam, and stealing money because a lot of the things they were promised were not provided once they reached Saudi Arabian soil," Wurie said.

Wurie told 7News that her parents used the travel company Ehajj & Umrah Tours for this trip.

7News On Your Side searched the business on the Maryland Business Express website, which you can access by clicking here , and found it was "not in good standing" with the state because it had not filed its annual report last year.

The company's website also is no longer active, instead showing it is now a private site and requiring a log-in to access it.

7News On Your Side went to the listed business address in Silver Spring, Md., but found out it was an apartment. Two men answered the door, and said Mohamed Bah - the listed business owner - was not there and "will not be back for a while."

When calling Bah's phone number, it went straight to voicemail, only to be told the mailbox was full. 7News On Your Side also texted the following questions:

  • What's your response to claims your company did not provide the services you promoted?
  • Why did you not inform the family that Mr. And Mrs. Wurie died?
  • Why are you still operating when your business license is not in good standing with the state?
  • What actions are you taking to rectify the situation?

Bah has not responded as of the time of publication.

"It's really important to do your homework on travel agencies. Ask the leadership at your local mosque which agencies they recommend, and then check those agencies out online, as well. Best is if you have friends and family who have used a particular travel agency," said Corey Saylor, the research and advocacy director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "When you pick a particular travel agency, rules about getting visas for Hajj have changed recently. Make sure the company you're working with understands that because that will be an indicator they're up to speed."

Saylor also told 7News "it's very rare" for a company devoted to helping families complete the Hajj to scam them, but it is still crucial to check the background of these businesses.

7News On Your Side also reached out to the Maryland Department of Assessment and Taxation to ask the following questions:

  • What consequences does this business face for still offering services while not in good standing?
  • Why has the state not shut down this business?
  • Now that at least two people have died on their watch, what will the state now do to this business?

Nobody has responded as of the time of publication.

Beyond checking travel companies, Saylor said it is also important to remind people taking part in this sacred tradition about another hazard.

So far during this year's Hajj, there have been more than 1,300 reported deaths linked to the extreme heat in the region. Temperatures have reached 120 degrees.

"Understanding it is a difficult and grueling trip, and help them think ahead: have water with you at all times, even if you don't think you're going to need it. Have food with you at all times, even if you don't think you're going to need it," Saylor said.

Saudi Arabia blacklists 54 Umrah companies in 19 Arab and Islamic countries

Measures to curb bogus trips as new minor pilgrimage season unfolds

Kaaba umrah mecca Grand mosque

Cairo: Fifty-four tour operators organising trips for Umrah or lesser pilgrimage in 19 Arab and Islamic countries have been blacklisted due to violations, a Saudi newspaper has reported.

The step is part of efforts to combat illegal brokerage in bogus journeys for Umrah in Saudi Arabia after violating travel agencies were detected during last month’s Hajj pilgrimage, according to Al Watan newspaper.

Hundreds of unregistered pilgrims died mainly due to scorching heat.

Several pilgrimage companies in Saudi Arabia are coordinating with Saudi security agencies to expose domestic and overseas Umrah brokers, the paper added.

  • Saudi Arabia: 153,000 visit visa holders caught for violating Hajj rules
  • 450 travel agents rounded up as Egypt cracks down on Hajj brokers

Such brokers are believed to be involved in human trafficking as they are accused of bringing in unregistered pilgrims who cannot afford the costs of legal Umrah on visit visas, it said citing unidentified sources.

There was no official Saudi comment on the report.

Saudi Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Abdul Fatah Mashat has recently met representatives of Umrah firms to discuss preparations for the new Umrah season that started last month after 1.8 million Muslims performed the annual Hajj pilgrimage in and around the holy city of Mecca.

Some 8.3 million Umrah visas were issued during the last season. The Umrah is undertaken around the year in the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest place in Mecca.

Saudi Arabia last month announced that 1,301 pilgrims, 83% of them illegals, passed away during the recent Hajj, after trekking for long distances under the sun.

Saudi authorities have repeatedly said that a Hajj visa is mandatory to perform the annual pilgrimage that coincided this year with extreme heat, and cracked down on fake tours on its soil. Saudi authorities also said that a visit visa does not quality its holder to perform Hajj and barred holders from entering Mecca and nearby sites where the pilgrimage rites take place.

After Hajj Deaths, Egypt Suspends Companies That Took Pilgrims to Mecca

The action against 16 tour companies came as governments look into whether many travelers were not properly registered to make the journey into the desert.

By Gerry Mullany

After hundreds of pilgrims died in the scorching desert heat during the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the Egyptian government announced on Saturday that it had suspended the licenses of 16 tour companies that had facilitated travel for some pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

At least 450 people have died during this year’s pilgrimage, in which travelers endured maximum temperatures that ranged from 108 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (42 to 49 degrees Celsius). But the actual number of fatalities is expected to climb as governments get more accurate tallies of the deaths. (Egypt, for one, has officially acknowledged only 31 deaths.)

In announcing the suspension of the 16 travel companies, the Egyptian government said the businesses failed to offer the pilgrims important services like medical care. It said the companies did not provide the pilgrims with “appropriate accommodation,” which caused them to suffer from “exhaustion due to the high temperatures.”

Reuters reported that some travel agencies may not have officially registered for the pilgrimage, to get around the high costs of package tours. And, Reuters said, companies were being blamed for letting pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia on personal visas, rather than hajj visas, which provide access to medical care and the holy sites.

Mahmoud Qassem, a member of Egypt’s Parliament, said the travel companies “left the pilgrims stranded and turned off their mobile phones” so they could not hear the travelers’ calls for help.

There were also complaints that pilgrims were not given access to enough cooling stations or water amid the intense heat.

The number of unregistered visitors — in addition to the intense desert heat — could have left Saudi Arabia unprepared for dealing with such a large influx of people.

Tunisia’s government has said that the death toll of pilgrims from that country was expected to rise from the 49 reported on Friday, as the number of people traveling on tourist visas became more clear.

The hajj has been the site of several tragedies, including a stampede in 2015 that killed more than 2,200 people . In recent years, with rising temperatures, many pilgrims have also succumbed to heat stress .

The Saudi government has said that during this year’s hajj, more than 1.8 million Muslims traveled to Mecca, 1.6 million of them from outside Saudi Arabia.

Hager Al-Hakeem contributed reporting from Luxor, Egypt.

An earlier version of this article misattributed reporting on travel agencies that may not have officially registered for the pilgrimage to the hajj. It was from Reuters, not The Associated Press.

Montgomery County woman says travel agency encouraged her to lie on religious pilgrimage to Mecca

M ONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A concerned Maryland woman is short of $11,000 after traveling to Saudi Arabia with the same traveling company as a Bowie couple who died in Mecca earlier in June.

Nemata Kamara of Montgomery County traveled with Silver Spring-based traveling agency Ehajj and Umrah Tours in June to fulfill one of the five pillars of Islam in Saudi Arabia. But to her despair, the traveling company issued her the wrong visa and encouraged her to lie to immigration officials in Saudi Arabia to let her in.

“It really pains me know knowing that, you know, something I’ve been praying for, hoping for – and then I finally planned it and never had the opportunity to experience it,” said Kamara, who had to return to the United States without experiencing what she described as one of the “holiest experiences in Muslim culture.”

Kamara was granted a business visa instead of a special Hajj visa that Saudi Arabian officials require for people to enter Mecca.

Those who break the law and enter Mecca illegally could face hefty fines up to $5,000, arrest and a 10-year ban, she said.

“That was the thing that really, really bugs me,” said Kamara who was encouraged to lie about why she was visiting Saudi Arabia. “I always feel like as Muslims we’re supposed to practice what you know the Quran tells us which is don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t deceive others.”

Despite constantly asking her touring company for help, Kamara said they instead kept giving her false promises that she would soon be getting the appropriate visa to enjoy her holy trip and enter Mecca legally.

However, after several days of waiting in Saudi Arabia with no clear guidance, Kamara decided to purchase an emergency flight back to the United States after learning the touring agency continued to break several foreign laws, including sneaking people into Mecca.

“Some of them have to walk two miles in the desert at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Some of them were missing, they didn’t know where they at,” Kamara told DC News Now.

Kamara unexpectedly spent an additional $8,000 to fly back home after learning her holy trip turned sour.

The devout Muslim asked for her money back from the touring agency, and while they told her that they were working on helping her, Kamara said they had yet to refund her.

“I just want all the money I paid to get my money back and then for them to not ever do business again because you don’t want anybody to go through what we went through,” Kamara said.

DC News Now previously reported that Ehajj and Umrah Tours was not in “good standing” with the State of Maryland.

Their website was no longer active as of Monday and required a private login to access it. DC News Now reached out to the touring company directly but had not yet heard back.

Montgomery County woman says travel agency encouraged her to lie on religious pilgrimage to Mecca

(Yicai) June 26 -- Enquiries about package tours to Saudi Arabia more than doubled on Chinese travel agency Ctrip.com’s online and offline channels today from a month earlier after state broadcaster CCTV News reported that China has granted Saudi Arabia Approved Destination Status for group tours from July 1.

The number of Chinese visitors to Saudi Arabia is likely to surge after July 1, Ctrip said. In preparation, the Shanghai-based firm is trying to team up with Chinese and foreign tour operators to introduce excellent guided tours to Saudi Arabia and link them with neighboring countries, including Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Bookings by Chinese tourists to Saudi Arabia over the summer months have almost quadrupled from a year earlier, making it the fastest growing outbound destination, according to Ctrip data.

Saudi Arabia plans to attract 5 million Chinese tourists by 2030, which would make China its third-largest source of international tourists.

The Kingdom’s tourism authority has linked arms with six Chinese travel agencies, including Tongcheng, Ctrip and Jinjiang, to provide tours to the Middle Eastern nation with prices starting at around CNY23,000 (USD3,167), China Economic Net reported earlier this month, citing Alhasan Aldabbagh, president of the Asia-Pacific Market of the Saudi Tourism Authority at the China International Tourism Mart.

“Hotel operator Huazhu Hotels Group has already entered Saudi Arabia, and you will see more and more Chinese brands in the Kingdom in the future,” Aldabbagh said.

In April, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines added direct flights from Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai to Riyadh. And Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s new flagship airline that is expected to start operations next year, reached agreements with China Eastern Airlines and Air China earlier this month to give Chinese carriers priority.
