'Journey 3' And '4' Now In Development; Dwayne Johnson To Return

If you were hoping for more family friendly Dwayne Johnson action movies, today is your lucky day. New Line Cinema has hired writers to do not one, but two sequels in the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise, each of which will be headlined by Johnson.  Chad  and  Carey Hayes , who co-wrote The Conjuring , have been brought on to write Journey 3 and Journey 4 , sequels to the 2008 film  Journey to the Center of the Earth  and its 2012 follow-up  Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. 

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, which isn't the first we've heard of Journey sequels. Director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were previously hired to direct/write Journey 3 with Johnson attached but now the THR reports the Hayes' will "take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before." If things work out, both films will film back to back.

Chad and Carey Hayes are becoming Johnson's guys, which is probably why this change took place. They wrote San Andreas for him as well as a few others things. You have to think if this is becoming another Dwayne Johnson franchise, he's going to want people around him who he trusts. People who know his voice and who he can talk to to drive the story. He's not going to blindly jump into something at this point.

Previously, we'd heard Josh Hutcherson was also planning on coming back for Journey 3 , but that was before The Hunger Games: Catching Fire blew up so huge. You have to think his number went up significantly, and will again after the next two Hunger Games movies. Still, he's kind of the main character so he'd probably have to come back in some capacity.

I haven't seen either of the Journey movies, simply because nothing about them interested me. Families seem to like them though and if making these movies means Johnson can do more risky fare in the future, I'm all for it. But it could also mean the opposite. What do you think?

Dwayne Johnson is in talks with New Line to star in the third " Journey " film, TheWrap has learned.

Johnson plays Hank in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." He replaced Brendan Fraser, who starred as Trevor Anderson, in the 2008 "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

"Journey 2" has been the No. 1 movie at the international box office for four weekends in a row, and has taken in more than $276.5 million worldwide, compared to "Journey's" $242 million worldwide take.

It has grossed $86.5 million domestically. The film, which opened internationally on Jan. 19, and domestically on Feb. 10, hasn't yet opened in Japan and some other territories.

Josh Hutcherson starred in both "Journey" and "Journey 2." He also stars in Lionsgate's upcoming "The Hunger Games."

According to reports, the characters played by Hutcherson and Johnson in the last installment return in "Journey 3."

Director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn have signed on for the third film.

"Journey 3" is produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson and Charlotte Huggins.

Why The Rock's Giving Up On Making Journey 3

Between his turns in franchises like G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious (just to name a couple), Dwayne Johnson has earned his Franchise Viagra nickname. That said, not all of his potential projects will ever see the light of day, including a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Some fans have wondered why we haven't seen the third installment in the franchise yet, and Johnson has officially taken to social media to explain that he gave up on it because he couldn't creatively make it work. In response to the question of Journey 3 's status, The Rock posted:

So it seems that there was a plan to make a third Journey at one point in time. The Rock wanted to dive further into Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon to push the franchise into trilogy territory. However, as is often the case with franchises such as this, the project ran into creative issues and ended up getting abandoned somewhere in development hell. Now, Dwayne Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his upcoming Luke Hobbs/Deckard Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff , with no intention of journeying back to Journey .

Of course, if you're a fan who wants to see The Rock adventure through a jungle on a blockbuster adventure, then you can always head to your local theater to check out Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . The revival of the board game (now video game) adventure series has made a ton of money and has earned a welcoming response from critics . It's not a Journey movie, but based on his post , it seems that it will have to do for the foreseeable future.

That's not to say that the Journey franchise couldn't conceivably continue without The Rock involved in some capacity. After all, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , despite its status as a sequel, was Dwayne Johnson first installment in the franchise -- which saw him take the reins from Brendan Fraser after 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth . Dropping a box office draw as powerful of The Rock doesn't necessarily seem like the smartest business decision, but if he's not coming back, that could be the only way to get another Journey movie made.

Though it might feel somewhat disheartening for fans to learn that a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn't in the cards at this point, we will bring you more information related to all of Dwayne Johnson's upcoming projects as new details are made available to us. When you put Michael Caine on the back of a giant wasp, and get The Rock doing some peck-popping work, you do suspect you’ll get some box office interest. Yet Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , the sequel to the 3D Brendan Fraser vehicle Journey To The Center Of The Earth , was a solid hit back in 2012. In fact, a bigger hit than many were expecting.

So much so, in fact, that the franchise was set to extend by another feature. Director Brad Peyton initially signed up for the third film, having directed the second, and writers Brian and Mark Gunn were hired to pen a script. Dwayne Johnson was expected to return, with Josh Hutcherson, too. But the increasingly busy schedule of Dwayne Johnson seems to have contributed to the death of this project.

And now, to nobody’s surprise, Mr. Johnson  has officially crossed a project off his to-do list. The planned third  Journey  film, the untitled  Journey 3 , has now died a death, as he revealed via his Twitter account…

Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten , and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10 th ) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) as he searches for his missing grandfather ( Michael Caine ) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. The Wrap reported that though the studio would prefer to reunite cast and crew for a third Journey , it is unclear whether the actors will return or not. Brendan Fraser did not reprise his role from the first movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth , but Hutcherson is back in the lineup. Newcomers to the sequel include Dwayne Johnson as Sean’s new stepfather, who accompanies him to the island. In order to get there, they seek the services of a father/daughter team with access to a helicopter and expert navigational skills, played by Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens.

In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the new 3D family adventure “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” begins when young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It’s a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Moana 2 Trailer Premiere Featuring Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson

The sea… it calls her. Moana is back, and she’s ready for a new adventure in the first trailer for Moana 2 , which landed on May 29, 2024.

Originally conceived as a Disney+ series, this highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 hit film will now receive a full theatrical release. The movie, coming to theaters on November 27, reunites us with Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui.

The Next Chapter

The trailer depicts an older and more mature Moana embarking on a mission with Maui to reconnect her people across the entire ocean . She encounters an array of oceanic creatures on this new journey. Set three years after the original, Moana 2 will take audiences on a vivid new voyage, featuring not just Moana and Maui but also a fresh group of seafarers.

A Heroine’s Journey

The upcoming film was announced through an enticing poster shared by Johnson, which includes Maui’s hook and Moana’s oar set in the sand forming the number two. The image shows Moana blowing a conch with the sun setting behind her.

A Star-Packed Cast

Dwayne Johnson revealed his excitement via social media, noting that The ocean is calling her back and inviting fans to experience the trailer for themselves. The return of Auli’i Cravalho has also been warmly received by fans who see her as the heart of the franchise.

Sonic the hedgehog 3 already revealed its best post-credits tease 2 years ago, $439m transformers movie finds second life on netflix's global chart.

The Rock's upcoming projects include  Fast & Furious 7 and some as-yet unspecified DC superhero movie (we're pretty sure we know what it is ), but he's also got it covered in the family-friendly movie department. No, that doesn't mean another Tooth Fairy movie starring Dwayne Johnson; it does , apparently, mean we'll be getting two new installments in the Journey series, which added Johnson to the mix in the punny titled second installment, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island .

New Line and Walden have had Johnson attached to  Journey 3  for some two years now, but this is the first we've heard of Journey 4 also being in the works. THR says the plan, schedule-permitting, is to shoot the third and fourth  Journey  movie installments back to back, with Josh Hutcherson reprising as Johnson's son-in-law. Screenwriting brothers Chad and Carey Hayes ( The Conjuring ) have reportedly set to work on penning scripts for both adventure films.

The Hayes are fresh off co-writing Johnson's upcoming 3D disaster/action film  San Andreas , which was also directed by Journey 2 helmsman Brad Peyton; he is expected to return to call the shots on  Journey 3 . Peyton was also once lined up to direct a Lobo movie starring Johnson (before that project was canned), while the Hayes are currently working on the  Seal Team 666 adaptation - a supernatural/action flick envisioned as a Johnson vehicle. That is to say, these four (the Hayes, Johnson, and Peyton) have clearly established a solid working relationship.

Rumor has it that Journey 3 may involve a trip into outer space, though it's probably safe to assume that such a storyline will be a tad more light-hearted than something like Gravity . If Journey 3 and 4 are going to be filmed back to back, then it's feasible the former will end on a cliff-hanger that sets up the fourth installment. It could also be that New Line and Walden would prefer to shoot theses movies together for cost efficiency, since they'll be filmed largely on sound stages with green screen backdrops.

Journey 2 grossed just over $335 million worldwide in theaters (against a $79 million budget) and was mostly successful in achieving its goal - offering a wholesome adventure story and colorful pop-out 3D effects for young ones, while Johnson and his adult costars provided some wittier banter for older folk. So yeah, this franchise hasn't exactly had lofty ambitions to date and that presumably won't change with the next two installments; as far as being decent pop art for the whole family to enjoy, though, these next two Journey s ought to get the job done.

For the last several years, television has reigned supreme in Hollywood. But looking at the lineup of movies coming out in the next few years, that just might be changing. Looking ahead, late 2024, 2025, and 2026 all seem like they're going to be good years to head to the movie theater (or settle in at home and stream the film). Most of the films coming out are much-anticipated sequels, prequels, or modern-day remakes, giving them all a touch of nostalgic flair that makes them seem even more exciting.

Some of the movies coming out already have trailers you can watch that will get you even more excited to see them on the big screen, while others haven't gotten quite that far just yet. Either way, these exciting movie announcements are definitely something you're going to look forward to.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Disney shocked fans in early 2024 when they announced that a Moana sequel was going to be released in November, just a few months away. The teaser trailer was released on Disney+ on May 29 and quickly became the most watched movie trailer in Disney's history.

Moana 2 will star the same beloved characters as the first film, including Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and demigod Maui. Moana receives a call from her ancestors and must journey into the dangerous seas of Oceania and where she experiences some scary things, but also a lot of adventure.

Ever since Wicked took Broadway by storm, there has been talk of a cinematic adaptation, and it's now finally, really happening. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu and stars Cynthia Ervio, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

This upcoming film is going to be part one—Universal has already said that the play's story will be split into two movies (the second is set to be released the following November in 2025).

Mufasa: The Lion King

Release Date: Dec. 20, 2024

Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to The Lion King directed by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins with the same photorealistic CGI style as the 2019 adaptation. The film uses Rafiki to tell the legend of Mufasa to lion cub Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala. Beloved characters like Timon and Pumbaa will be making an appearance and the film will be told in flashbacks, with stories about Mufasa back when he was an orphaned cub, meeting a lion named Taka who takes him on a journey that changes his life.

Release date: Dec. 25, 2024

The original Nosferatu film was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel and came out in 1922 as one of the earliest depictions of vampires in the movies. The 1922 film was as creepy as you might expect, and the 2024 version is probably going to be even more disturbing. The amazing director of The Lighthouse and The Witch , Robert Eggers, has been working on this remake of Nosferatu since 2015, so it's something horror film fans have been anticipating.

Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, William Dafoe, Emma Corrin, and Nicholas Hoult, the movie promises to be a bloody, terrifying take on the vampire story that will certainly have tons of classic horror references. The release date is Dec. 25, because who doesn't want to watch a scary movie on Christmas Day?

Expected Release: late 2024 or early 2025

Community is a cult favorite television show that ran for six seasons, and fans have been hoping for a movie for a long time. While a lot of details haven't been confirmed just yet, ET reports that the cast will include Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong (but no Chevy Chase). The movie will go from how the series ended and may focus on a college reunion.

Expected Release: March 21, 2025

Snow White is the latest classic Disney cartoon to get the live-action treatment, and this version of the film has been a long time coming—it was completed in July 2022 and was set to premiere in the spring of 2024, but the release date was pushed back a year because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. This live-action film will star Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Other cast members will include Andrew Burnap, Ansu Kabia, Martin Klebba, and Colin Michael Carmichael.

Jurassic World 4

Expected Release: July 2, 2025

Jurassic World 4 is set to film during the summer of 2024 with a fast release date of a year later. However, you can expect this sequel to be different than the films before it. While it hasn't been confirmed, the rumor is that stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum will not be reprising their roles. Actors like Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey are rumored to be joining the film.

It's taken more than a decade since the original Avatar premiered, but the third installment in the science fiction series finally has a release date (and, according to People , the 4th is already being filmed). Directed by James Cameron, Avatar 3 will show a new side of Pandora and the Na'vi. Returning stars include Sam Worthington, Zoe Salanda, Sigourney Weaver, and Joel David Moore, and some new cast members include Oona Chaplin.

Expected Release: Possibly 2025

It's been nearly a decade since the fourth installment of the wildly popular Shrek franchise was released, and fans are excited it's back again. Few details are available, but it's expected that Mike Myers and Antonio Banderas will return to voice the lovable ogre Shrek and Puss in Booths respectively. While it was confirmed to be in development , it's hard to say when it will be released, although it's rumored that Dreamworks is hoping for a 2025 date.

Downton Abbey Sequel

Expected Release: rumored for 2025

In May 2024, it was announced that the series of film adaptations of the beloved BBC show would become a trilogy at long last. This third (and final) installment of the series stars returning favorites like Michelle Dockery, Paul Giamatti, Dominic West, and many more. Although there aren't a lot of details out just yet, the film will be written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis.

Scary Movie Sequel

Expected Release: 2025

In April 2024, Paramount and Miramax announced that they would be releasing yet another take on the popular Scary Movie franchise. There are no details on what the movie will be about, exactly when it will be released, or who will be cast, although both Anna Faris and Rebecca Hall have expressed interest in being involved.

Peaky Blinders

Expected Release: Probably 2025

The hit television series Peaky Blinders , which stars Cillian Murphy, ran for six seasons and ended in 2022, but fans have been hoping for a film since then. In 2021, creator Steven Knight revealed that a film was "in development," and in 2024 he announced that filming would begin in September. The film will still star Murphy and will take place during World War II. There is no official release date, but it will likely be out sometime in 2025.

The Lord of The Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

In May 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that the next film in the Lord of the Rings franchise would be The Hunt for Gollum , focusing, obviously, on the creature Gollum. Producers include Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh, and Andy Serkis is apparently slated to both direct the film and reprieve his role as Gollum.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel

Expected Release: April 3, 2026

Considering the fact that the first Super Mario Bros. film was such a huge hit, it's no surprise that a sequel is already in the works. The second movie already has a release date set for 2026 and will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic again.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

Expected Release: May 22, 2026

Back in early 2024, Disney announced that director Jon Favreau was working on a feature film adaptation of The Mandalorian . Fans have since awaited the announcement of the movie, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu . Aside from the adorable Baby Yoda, the movie will also star series star Pedro Pascal and in May 2024, it was rumored that Sigourney Weaver was in talks to join the cast.

Expected Release: Nov. 25 2026

Frozen is one of Disney's most popular franchises, so the third installment of the movie series, even though it's still years away, is highly anticipated. Both Idina Menzel and Josh Gad have confirmed that they'll be reprising their roles, but Kristen Bell has not. No details about the story have been released.

Red, White & Royal Blue Sequel

Expected Release: TBD

Red, White & Royal Blue , based on the novel of the same name, was a hit romantic comedy when it premiered on Amazon Prime Video in June 2023. The film is about a love affair between the son of the President of the United States and a young prince. All we know about this sequel is it will once again star Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez. Plot details haven't been released, but Matthew Lopez and Casey McQuiston will return to write the script.
