Everything About Buying Discount Cruise Gift Cards via AARP (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, & More)
There’s a way that you can purchase gift cards for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and other cruise lines… all for a sharp 10% discount off their face value. This deal means you can save potentially hundreds of dollars off your next cruise.
That may sound too good to be true, but the offer is available through AARP, the popular senior interest group. There’s no catch or hoops to jump through, apart from being a member.
Even better, before you think you have to be an older American to join up and get these savings on cruise gift cards, membership is open to anyone . That means you can save no matter your age.
Still, there are some details you should know. That’s why I signed up for the AARP program myself to see exactly how things work. Here is how to sign up, purchase cards, and take advantage of the savings…
Overview of the AARP Cruise Gift Card Program
First things first, what exactly is the deal offered by AARP?
As an interest group with tens of millions of members across the country, AARP is known for its influence. For members, it also offers a number of benefits and perks.
The group’s website includes everything from insurance plans to car buying programs to credit cards to literature about topics in aging. But the site also has what it calls “AARP Rewards.”
Here, the group offers all sorts of deals from discounted magazine subscriptions to book deals to sweepstakes entries. One of the biggest groups of deals, however, is dedicated to discounted gift cards.
You’ll find specials for gift cards entailing everything from restaurants to grocery stores. All of them offer a discount off the face value. For instance, there are $25 gift cards to clothing store H&M for $23 — about 8% off the face value. Other options include discounted cards to AirBnB, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s and more.
Of all those discounts, it’s the cruise gift cards that seem to offer some of the best deals. Here, the cards are 8-10% off the face value . Given the cost of a cruise, that can save you potentially hundreds of dollars.
What Cruise Line Gift Cards Are Available?
At the time of this article, there are a total of five different cruise lines with gift cards available via AARP. The available lines include:
- Royal Caribbean
- Celebrity Cruises
- Holland America
Combined, these lines represent roughly 100 cruise ships offering trips just about anywhere in the world. In other words, no matter if you want to sail the Caribbean or Australia, the Mediterranean or Alaska, you can do it while saving some serious money.
What Sort of Discount is Offered?
At the time of this writing, each cruise line on the AARP list of offers had two denominations of cards offered: $100 and $500.
Each card is offered at an 8-10% discount. So in general the $100 gift cards sell for $90 via AARP and the $500 cards sell for $450 .
So if you were to purchase a cruise costing $2,500, you could buy five of these cards for $2,250, saving yourself $250 off the purchase.
Here are the current discounts by cruise line:
- Celebrity: 10% off
- Royal Caribbean: 10% off
- Princess: 8% off
- Carnival: 10% off
- Holland America: 8% off
Do I Have to Be an AARP Member to Buy?
Of the five different cruise lines that have gift cards on the AARP website, four of them — Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America and Celebrity — specifically state they are for “Members Only.” Holland America doesn’t make that distinction.
For Holland America, you should be able to register for a free AARP account to purchase. However, I haven’t tried doing that. Given that most lines require a paid membership (which starts at only $12), it’s best to sign up that way.
I’m Not Over 50 Years Old. Does That Mean I Can’t Get the Discount?
No! While AARP is known for being an interest group for older Americans, anyone can join, no matter their age. We were personally able to sign up for a membership and then access all the gift cards with no issue despite being under 50 years old.
Where Do I Go to Buy the Gift Cards?
So where exactly do you go to get your card? If you don’t yet have an AARP account, first you’ll need to register. If you sign up, expect a $12 per year charge. That’s a small price to pay for the ability to save up to 10% off your cruise.
If you’re already registered with AARP, follow these steps to find the gift cards:
- Visit AARP.org
- Click “AARP Rewards” in the menu at the top
- Click “Login” at the top right of the next page and then enter your email/password
- Once signed in, look for the drop down menu on the Rewards page. Select “Redeem” and then “All Rewards”
- Scroll down until you see the heading “All Rewards”. Enter “cruise” in the search box to bring up all the discounted cruise gift cards
I’ll admit that it was a little confusing on how to find the discounted cruise gift cards at first. When creating a new account like I did, I suggest that once you register, go ahead and sign out, then close your browser. Then re-open the browser and sign back into AARP. When I signed up, it seemed to not recognize my new account at first.
Is There a Limit on How Cards Many I Can Buy?
Yes. Each gift card will come with restrictions on how many are able to be purchased at once. The “Premium” items like Carnival gift cards had a limit of 25 per month. The non-premium cards had a lower limit of just five gift cards per month.
If you are headed on an expensive cruise, it may be that you have to purchase over multiple months to get all the gift cards you need.
Are There Special Restrictions on Using the Cards?
Before you buy the cruise cards, you’ll definitely want to read through all the fine print that’s provided on the AARP website about their use. Each cruise line seems to have different rules regarding usage.
For instance, Royal Caribbean only allows you to use the card for a new reservation. And you have to book the cruise, pay a deposit, and then email in a copy of the gift certificate to apply to your remaining balance.
Lines like Princess and Carnival are more lenient on when and where you can use the card, but it’s still smart to understand the rules about the cards before buying. You can find the terms on the AARP site before purchasing.
Can I Use These Cards For Myself?
Absolutely. Like other gift cards, the cruise cards don’t have anyone’s name attached. You can use them like cash. So if you want to buy them as a gift for someone, you can do that. Or if you have a cruise coming up and want to use the discount to save money, you can do that too.
Are the Gift Cards Physical or Digital?
If you’re wanting to purchase these as a gift, then you should know that the discounted cards are actually digital. According to the fine print on AARP, each of these is “fulfilled as a digital gift code.”
You will receive the card via email. One thing to note is that it can take several minutes before the cards arrive in your inbox.
Are the AARP Discount Cruise Cards a Good Deal?
If you’re looking for a deal, it doesn’t get much better than this. With no strings attached, hoops to jump through, or other headaches, you can essentially get 10% off the cost of your cruise by buying these gift certificates and then using them to pay for the trip. So a $2,000 cruise becomes $1,800 just with buying the cards through AARP.
And since you can still shop around and buy your cruise how and when you want, you can buy the cards, and then wait for a deal that looks good to you. The only difference is instead of paying full price, you get a discount.
I’ve personally bought and used cards for a Carnival cruise. Applying the cards on the payment page was simple, and I had no issues.
If you plan to cruise one of the lines offering the cards, we see no reason not to take advantage.

how do you use the digital codes for carnival? i dont see anywhere on my cruise page to enter it
When it comes to the payment screen, there should be a spot to enter a gift card number.
I have done this for 4 Carnival cruises. It works great. I had no problem purchasing them and redeeming them when booking my cruise. I used USAA travel service to book all of my cruises and they accepted my carnival gift cards over the phone for payment. I saved 10% and it was easy.
On your payment page click on gift card, enter the card number, the pin and the amount you want applied to the card. I have done this multiple times. Good luck and happy cruising.
Unfortunately, the discount for the Princess Cruises gift card has gone from 10% to 8%. I asked AARP about this, and they said that the discount amount is up to Princess, not AARP.
Travel insurance will not reimburse payment towards a cryise paid with a gift card should you need to cancel for any reason.
No place to add gift card online for payment. Called gift card #, they can’t add it no place on cruise personalizer. So exactly hiw are yiu redeeming Princess gift for cruise payment.
AARP Rewards (and thus access to gift cards) is only available to US residents. Wish I’d known this before joining AARP (which you can do as a Canadian).
Go online and chat. I just did it and cancelled my membership and got reimbursed. Same problem you had.
Warning: The AARP site does not support Safari, only Chrome. Mac users, I just saved you half an hour, you’re welcome. I left them lots of feedback.

Cruise line gift cards: Where to buy them, how to spend them
If you're racking your brain to come up with the perfect gift for your cruise-loving family member or friend, consider buying them a gift card or certificate from their favorite cruise line.
Cruisers will appreciate a gift they can use toward purchasing their cruise fare or splurging on a beverage package, specialty restaurant or spa treatment. Don't rule out the first-timers on your list; you can help them fund their first foray into cruising or surprise them with something extra to make their upcoming trip special.
If you're a cruiser, you may also want to purchase a gift card for yourself, especially when you can find a deal. AARP sometimes offers digital gift cards for cruise lines like Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean at a savings of up to 10%.
Gift cards purchased with Target's RedCard receive a 5% discount. You can also look for Black Friday sales on Disney gift cards at Sam's Club and other promotions offered through the cruise lines or retailers.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Not every cruise line offers gift cards, and some have alternative ways to help pay for a portion of someone else's vacation. However, if you're in the market for cruise line gift cards, read on to find out which seven lines offer them, where to buy them and how to use them.
Holland America Line
Holland America offers gift cards in denominations between $5 and $2,000 that are available to buy on its website. You can either purchase a physical card to send enclosed with a personal message or choose a digital version that the recipient can open online with personalized audio and photos.
The line offers one or two sales a year that feature an added perk, such as a $100 bonus card with a $1,000 purchase.
You can use the cards to pay for cruise bookings, pre-cruise expenses or onboard charges covering specialty dining, beverages, shore excursions, spa treatments, gratuities and other purchases. They can also be used to buy Holland America's "Have It All" bundle, which includes a beverage package, shore excursion credit, Wi-Fi and specialty restaurant meals.
Holland America's gift cards are also available at online retailers, including Amazon, Target and Walmart, in preset amounts. Certain banks feature credit card programs where you can redeem points for the cruise line's gift cards. If you prefer to shop in person, you'll find gift cards in stores such as Target, Publix, Kroger and Giant Eagle.
Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained
Gift cards are only available in U.S. dollars. Gift cards are activated upon receipt, and they cannot be resold. In addition, buyers cannot purchase an aggregate amount exceeding $10,000 in one day.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises also offers gift cards on its website in denominations between $5 and $2,000. Buyers can personalize the line's eGift Card with photos and audio for the recipient. Princess Classic Gift Cards arrive by mail, with free shipping on cards over $100. Expedited shipping is also available.
You can use Princess gift cards to pay for your cruise, including fares with the Princess Plus and Princess Premier all-inclusive packages .
Recipients can also settle part or all of their onboard bill with gift cards at the end of the cruise at the passenger services desk. That means gift cards can essentially pay for meals in specialty restaurants, shore excursions, spa treatments and other onboard splurges.
You cannot use the gift card to pay for land excursions as part of a cruisetour, flights booked through Princess or gratuities.

You can find Princess gift cards in grocery stores like Kroger, Harris Teeter and Giant Eagle and online at retail sites such as Amazon, Target and Best Buy.
Gift cards are only available to residents in the U.S. and Canada. Classic Gift Cards cannot be mailed to Canada, so Canadian residents should choose the eGift Card option.
Buyers are limited to a $10,000 online aggregate purchase in one day and a maximum of five transactions a day. Anyone can use the gift card since there's no name on the card.
Carnival Cruises
Carnival Cruise Line 's online gift cards are customizable from $100 up to $1,000. You can purchase a physical card that's mailed and even have it wrapped and delivered in a tin for an additional $1.99 (for up to five cards). If you prefer, you can choose an e-gift card that's sent to the recipient online.
The gift card can be used toward a cruise booking, pre-purchased shore excursions or spa treatments. You can also apply it to beverage packages and gratuities. If you'd like to use the card as an onboard credit, you must go to the guest services desk or Sail & Sign kiosk to apply the gift card as payment for your onboard bill once you're on the ship.

Carnival's gift cards are available in over 9,000 retail outlets, including Best Buy, Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Lowe's, Safeway, Winn-Dixie and Publix. You can also purchase gift cards on board Carnival's ships. You can buy as many cards as you'd like, but there is a maximum online transaction of five gift cards at one time.
All gift cards are in U.S. dollars and not accepted on ships using a different onboard currency. You can transfer the gift card to another user since there are no names on the cards.
Disney Cruise Line
Gift cards for Disney Cruise Line are sold online at shopdisney.com in preset amounts, from $25 to $500. You can choose from over 60 Disney designs of physical gift cards and have them shipped, or you can send a themed eGift Card.
Gift cards are also sold at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disney retail locations throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. If you're purchasing them in person, you can load them for any amount from $15 to $1,000. The cards are reloadable with as little as $5 and up to $1,000. They can be reloaded at any location that sells the gift cards. That option is not available online.
Related: 11 ways to save money on a Disney cruise
Use Disney gift cards to purchase a cruise, shore excursions, merchandise on the ship and other onboard expenses. You can also spend the cards at Disney-owned properties, like Disney's Vero Beach Resort; on trips or cruises with Adventures by Disney; for Disney on Broadway; and at retail stores and other Disney businesses.
You'll also find them in preset amounts at retailers like Target, Walmart and Best Buy.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line ended its gift card program in 2021, but you still can send gifts to cruisers in the form of an onboard credit or spa credit. Onboard credit is available in $25 increments up to $100. Mandara Spa certificates are offered in amounts of $25, $50 and $100.
To send the gift, you'll need to know some personal information, including the birth date of the recipient or the reservation number for the booking. You can order the gift of onboard credits on Norwegian's website.
CruiseFirst certificates are another gift option. These advance purchase vouchers can be used to pay for cruises of six days or longer and are valued at double the price. For example, you'll pay $150 for a certificate worth $300. You can transfer these vouchers to another person as a gift without a charge.
You can purchase up to 10 certificates per person at a time, and they can only be applied to new reservations on voyages scheduled at least 120 days out from the purchase date of the certificate. Only one certificate can be used per sailing — and there are a few other restrictions. These vouchers expire within three years of the purchase date.
Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is another line that uses a gift certificate program rather than gift cards. Certificates are available in the following U.S. dollar increments: $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $1,500, $1,700 and $2,000. These certificates must be redeemed at least 10 days before the cruise.
Use them to pay the cruise fare, with some restrictions, or apply them toward onboard credit to cover specialty dining, beverage packages, spa treatments, gift shop purchases and other items. If you want to apply the gift certificates as payment for expenses on the ship, you'll need to redeem them online 10 days before the sailing date. They cannot be used for government taxes, fees, gratuities or casino play.

Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises has an online store where you can purchase onboard credit to celebrate someone's birthday, honeymoon, anniversary or other memorable occasion while on their cruise.
Gift certificates are available in $25 increments. These certificates can be purchased online if you know the recipient's reservation information, or you can call Celebrity's Store Customer Support team to place an order.
Note that gift cards cannot be used to pay shipboard charges, including gift shop purchases, casino debts, shore excursions or gratuities.
You can also give specialty dining certificates for $45 each. If the amount charged is less than that, the remaining sum will be applied to the passenger's onboard account.

How to earn the most points and perks when you book a cruise
P erhaps you're a cruise lover who wants to spend less on travel by using points and miles. Or, maybe you're an avid points collector looking to book your first cruise vacation. Either way, you're likely wondering how to leverage your points stash, credit cards and loyalty status to get the most value from your cruise booking.
You might assume your best bet is to save cash by booking a cruise using points and miles , but this method does not always yield the most advantageous redemption options. A better bet would be to use your cruise booking to earn you things like more points and miles, status or even free onboard perks.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Here is our expert advice on the most effective strategies for maximizing the rewards from your cruise bookings.
Pay with a travel credit card to earn extra points and miles
You will generally get the most out of your cruise booking by using the expense as an opportunity to earn points and miles toward a future trip, rather than by redeeming points for a free or discounted sailing.
In most cases, cruise purchases are coded as a travel expense by your credit card. A good strategy for maximizing your cruise purchase is to pay for your sailing with a travel credit card that earns more than 1% or 1 mile per dollar spent on travel purchases.
Once on board, your basic expenses will be covered as part of your cruise booking — including meals in select restaurants and entertainment — but there always will be some opportunities to splurge. You'll need to register a credit card with your cruise ship to pay for drinks and cocktails, meals at one of the fancier restaurants on board, shore excursions and spa treatments.
Again, you'll earn the most points on your onboard expenses by paying with a credit card that offers extra incentives for a broad range of travel purchases. Check out TPG's best credit cards for cruises to find the one that works for you.
To get you started, here is a quick reference chart of the current best credit cards for general travel-related expenses and their earning rate with TPG's valuation on travel purchases:
The information for the American Express Green Card and U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
Earn airline or hotel elite status
A large purchase, such as a cruise booking, is also a great way to get closer to airline or hotel elite status if you use a cobranded airline or hotel credit card that contributes to your stash of elite-qualifying points.
For example, American Airlines bases its elite status on AAdvantage Loyalty Points accrued through multiple channels, including purchases made with its cobranded credit card. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ) earns 1 AAdvantage Loyalty Point per dollar spent. So, by paying for a $10,000 cruise on the card, you'd earn 10,000 Loyalty Points, a quarter of the 40,000 Loyalty Points needed for entry-level AAdvantage Gold status .
Similarly, most cobranded United MileagePlus credit cards let you earn 25 Premier qualifying points for every $500 you spend toward the PQP and Premier qualifying flight requirements for United Airlines Premier status . The United Quest Card and the United Club Infinite Card earn 2 miles per dollar and up to 6,000 and 8,000 PQPs, respectively. So, by paying for your cruise fare on either of these cards, you could earn redeemable miles and PQPs toward status.
Finally, Delta's credit cards earn 1 mile per dollar spent on travel purchases, but starting Jan. 1, 2024, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card earn 1 Medallion Qualification Dollar for every $10 spent. As a cardholder, you'll earn 2,500 MQDs per calendar year.
On the hotel side, the World of Hyatt Credit Card earns 2 World of Hyatt points per dollar spent on travel and two qualifying night credits toward your next tier status every time you spend $5,000 on your card. You'll also earn a Category 1-4 free night certificate if you spend $15,000 in a calendar year. A large cruise purchase can put you on track for both of those bonuses.
Also, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card earns 2 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar spent on travel and an elite-qualifying night for every $5,000 you spend on the card. Spend $35,000 on the card in a calendar year, and you'll receive Gold Elite status .

Meet a sign-up bonus
Even if you only earn 1% or 1 mile per dollar spent on travel purchases, you can still use your cruise fare to earn a welcome bonus. If you have a big cruise expense coming up, consider applying for a new credit card so your payment not only earns you redeemable points but also helps to meet the minimum spend requirement to earn the large welcome bonus.
As a new cardholder of The Platinum Card® from American Express , for example, you'll earn 80,000 points (worth $1,600 at TPG's valuations) after you spend $8,000 in eligible purchases on your card within the first six months of card membership. One high-end cruise could get you all the way to that bonus with one purchase.
Refer to this post for the best credit card offers currently available.
Final payment is typically due three months prior to sailing, so you might be able to meet the spend minimum and receive the welcome bonus points in time to book flights or hotels for travel before or after your cruise. (Alternatively, you could pay the full cruise fare early.) This allows you to leverage your points for additional travel expenses that would otherwise require out-of-pocket expenses.
Or, you can save those points to use on flights and hotels for a subsequent cruise or vacation.

Get extra cruise perks through credit card offers
Booking a cruise with the right credit card can earn you more than points. When you book through your credit card's portal, you might also be eligible for extra perks or discounts on your vacation at sea.
If you have The Platinum Card® from American Express , you're eligible for additional perks and benefits under the Amex Cruise Privileges Program .
Whether you pay in cash or use your Membership Rewards points to defray your cruise expenses, you'll receive up to $300 in cabin credit on cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line , Holland America Line , Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International .
Additional Amex Platinum perks vary by cruise line. While Amex doesn't generally publish its official benefits, reports indicate that previous benefits included a $200 shore excursion credit on Crystal and a bottle of premium Champagne or wine on Royal Caribbean.
Additionally, American Express frequently provides rewarding Amex Offers on cruises. Earlier this year, for instance, Amex offered a bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points when you spent $1,000 or more on a Royal Caribbean voyage.
The number of bonus points, 20,000, is quite substantial. With our current valuation of Membership Rewards points at 2 cents apiece, these 20,000 points would be worth $400 based on our evaluation. That means if you use an American Express card to spend $1,000 on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you receive 40% of that amount back in Membership Rewards points.
It's worth noting that these offers are targeted, meaning they are not available to every cardholder. Additionally, you must enroll in the specific Amex Offer to take advantage of it.
There are a few other considerations as well. Cardmembers can only enroll in the offer using one American Express card, and it is essential to review and adhere to the terms and conditions to receive the bonus points.
I recently booked a Celebrity Cruise when I was offered a 35,000-point bonus for spending $1,000 on my American Express® Gold Card . Since my mom had the same offer on her Amex Gold, I called Celebrity to split the payment for the cruise between the two cards. To get 72,000 Amex points for a $2,000 cruise is a fantastic maximization strategy.
Other credit cards don't offer cruisers nearly as many perks as the Amex Platinum does. However, the Chase Sapphire Reserve does offer an annual $300 statement credit toward any travel-related purchase, including cruise bookings, made through its booking portal.
Book cruises via an airline portal for extra miles
Several airlines allow you to earn bonus miles by booking cruises via their websites. Airline-affiliated online cruise sellers include United Cruises , American Airlines Cruises and Delta SkyMiles Cruises .
The cruises we priced out via United Cruises were largely the same price as booking directly with the cruise lines. The only difference is that you would earn bonus United miles per dollar spent for booking via the United site.
On our Royal Caribbean cruise booking test, United credit card holders can earn up to 10 miles per dollar spent on the cruise cabin's base rate for booking via the airline's cruise portal. These increased accruals are only for balcony and suite rooms. Your United Cruises earnings are capped at 60,000 MileagePlus miles per purchase, and there's a one-time bonus of 2,500 miles per cruise booking.
You'll also earn 1 or 2 miles per dollar more by paying for the cruise on your cobranded United MileagePlus credit card . Or, double dip by paying with any credit card that gives you extra points for travel purchases.
Remember that these bookings are considered third-party purchases, so cruise lines are not obligated or might not be inclined to allow you to make changes.
For this Celebrity sailing for a family of two, that could mean picking up 6,580 United MileagePlus miles, valued by TPG at around $95.
Plus, travelers with United elite status receive extra onboard perks when booking through United Cruises. Bonuses vary by cruise line and are based on your elite status tier, but you could get anything from relaxing spa treatments to complimentary wine to up to $300 to spend on board.

Use casino loyalty to get perks and free cruises
Your casino loyalty status can also earn you cruise perks. If you have status with MGM Rewards , for example, you might have access to cruise perks or even free cruises.
Gold members and above are eligible for onboard credit on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises , plus a welcome amenity and an entertainment tour. You will need to validate your loyalty status with the cruise line prior to departure to access your perks.
Even better, once you hit Platinum status with MGM, you can book one free cruise annually with either of the sister cruise lines. To book your free cruise, you'll need to contact the MGM Rewards elite reservations department.
The terms indicate that you must earn Platinum or Noir status by gameplay to get the free cruise.

Leverage Marriott's cruise partnership to earn points and status
Most cruise lines have their own loyalty programs that are exclusively focused on onboard perks when sailing that line. However, one cruise line is connected to a hotel loyalty program, so a direct booking will earn you points usable outside the cruise world.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection participates in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. This allows members to earn and redeem points on Ritz-Carlton cruises and enjoy various perks associated with elite status during their voyages.
When booking through The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, you will earn 5 Marriott Bonvoy points for every dollar spent on the cruise fare. Your cruise fare will contribute toward the $23,000 spending requirement for Marriott's Ambassador Elite status . Additionally, you will earn elite nights for your cruises.
Buy cruise gift cards strategically to earn more points
You can use credit cards strategically to maximize earnings on your cruise purchases, beyond extra points for travel purchases. One way is by purchasing gift cards.
Some cruise lines offer gift cards for sale at retailers such as grocery stores and office supply stores. Depending on which credit cards are in your wallet, you might be able to earn more points per dollar when picking up cruise (or Disney) gift cards .
For example, with a card like the American Express® Gold Card , you can earn 4 points per dollar spent at groceries at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 in a calendar year (then 1 point per dollar). Use this card to purchase cruise gift cards at your preferred grocery store, and you will effectively categorize your cruise expenses as grocery purchases. In this way, you can accumulate more credit card points than if you paid for your cruise purchase with a card that only gives double points for travel purchases.

Bottom line
Paying for a cruise can be a significant purchase. You'll definitely want to get the most bang for your buck in points, miles, status advancement or perks when you pay that bill.
When it's time to plan your next cruise, choose the strategy or strategies that make sense based on the credit cards and loyalty status you have (or wish to have). Even if you're not getting a free cruise this time around, smart spending decisions will maximize the value you get from this purchase to discount or ease your travel in the future.

Discount Gift Cards?

Purchase $250 gift card, promo code is MOM10.
Purchase $500 gift card, promo code is MOM25.
I am guessing the promo code for purchasing $1,000 gift card, promo code MOM60.
Sorry, forgot there were promo codes.
Also, Bonus Gift Cards have an expiration date .... August xx, 2018. I don't remember the days ... therefore xx's. You can call and ask. I think, if I remember correctly, the gift cards you purchase have a 2 year (?) expiration date. Again, ask to be sure.

If you apply a Princess gift card to your account once you board the ship, can you receive a refund of any unused funds or is it nonrefundable?

Just used the gift card and bonus card for payment on upcoming cruise.

Yes, refundable as it is treated as if you put cash onto your account.
Is it refundable like any OBC, in the form of a check mailed? I am doing a B2B and was hoping to be able to take what was left from the first week and apply it to the second week. But I guess I can tell them to only apply half of the credit, then on the start of the second week, apply the rest.
I DO have a Princess cruise coming up. Thank you Thank you Thank you for posting this. I bought the gift cards to pay off my balance on my cruise and i'll use the 'bonus' gift cards as OBC. It isn't much ... but it's free money. AND I get $$ cash back on my credit card I purchased the gift cards with. So ... pretty happy about it.
Ditto here!!! I have 2 cruises booked - purchased 2 gift cards, will receive 2 bonus cards plus cash back on credit card used. It's a Win-Win for me!!!
Thank you for sharing the info :)
And now that I'm thinking, I don't know if they apply the entire amount of the gift card to the account as OBC in advance. I wonder if they only use what's needed to pay the balance at the end, just as if it were a credit card or cash? I've always just used my gift cards for payments towards the cruise.
Another angle or two...
Pay with your Citi Costco credit card and it will likely be classed as "travel" and you MIGHT get an additional 3% as Costco annual credit card refund.
EDIT: I checked on Princess.com and they do not accept Paypal. Leaving the next suggestion here in case you might want to use it for any other Paypal purchases.
IF allowed on the Princess site, pay with Paypal (after signing up for this quarter's bonuses on your Chase Freedom card and adding the Freedom card to your Paypal account) and get 5% cash back on up to $1,500 of Paypal purchases. Be sure and specify in Paypal that you're using your Chase Freedom card for payment. Sorry if this is confusing, but every dollar counts!
Since my kids didn't all chip in to get me these in bulk for Mother's Day... just purchased a few myself. I hesitated as someone mentioned not maybe wanting to put up money I didn't need to for a few more months but the additional gift cards equal about what the cabin price reduced to, so I don't have to give up grats and EZ Air discounts. Now if we could only get that AMEX offer one more time.....it's not much but it's something!
For those of you who have purchased gift cards, did the charge come directly from Princess or from a third party? I'm redirected to "merchant dot sgiftcard dot com" when I go to buy a gift card. Asking because my credit card gives triple points for travel purchases.
Mine was direct charge from Princess...happy since I get extra points too!!!
Remember, once you purchase the gift cards, the balance is used just like cash. It doesn't change anything regarding your booking or your perks. The only difference is the little bonus card has an expiration date of 8-31-18, but the regular card has no exp date or fees for non-use.
And if you realize you're basically converting cash to a gift card balance, you're only out the tiny amount of interest your bank account might (or might not[emoji16]) make. Unless you carry a balance on the credit card you use for the gift card.......
My charge shows 'Princess Cruises CA Santa Clarita' I get 3% back on travel purchases :)
Mine show Princess Cruises.
Another question - I bought two, at $1000 but it won't let me purchase any more than that. Is there a limit? It shows that they are pending on AMEX so I'm obviously going to watch that close to make sure it's refunded but for these last two I got an email from Princess saying they were unable to complete my order. From what I can see the limit is 5 and I am not at that, and it's not that AMEX put a limit on it either? I might try with a different credit card and see if that makes a difference.
neverbeenhere
I believe only one will process. I believe only one discount code per person. —-buy another on your partners account???
This isn't true. I purchased 2 cards in 2 different amounts. I received both cards and both bonus cards.
I would definitely check with Amex. It could be a fraud alert/freeze on their part.
I was wondering about that. Tried with another card and haven’t gotten the email codes yet but also haven’t gotten the declined email either.

It took overnight for me to receive the receipts and digital CARDS. I put the CODES into the order part of the form. Does that agree with what you did?

$1,5000 card purchase (I'm guessing) MOM60 is the code.

First the $1 sale, now this...this board is both costing and saving me money.

Dang ... I can't 'edit' any longer. BUT it's a $1,000 card purchase with code MOM60.
OMG ... some weird typo that was.
Got the latest decline from Princess. Guess I’ll have to be satisfied with what I got!

Yes, I did the transaction through Princess correctly. It's after it's accepted then I get an email that they won't process it.
