• This is the first single by American rapper J. Cole, from his second studio album Born Sinner . The love anthem finds Cole reflecting on a teenage crush and when the now successful Roc Nation rapper returns to his hometown, he finds he is still attracted to the doe-eyed girl. The song was released to Urban contemporary radio on February 19, 2013.
• Cole raps two verses, as well as co-handling hook duties on the cut with R&B singer Miguel. The rapper also self-produced the song. "I get excited about that; it's an opportunity to change things," he told MTV News. "It's almost like the first time I heard ' Cry Me a River ,' Justin Timberlake. The minute that came on ... It hit you a certain kinda way. That was the exciting part."
• It was the song's original sound that persuaded Cole to choose it to lead Born Sinner . "You couldn't point to any song on the radio and be like, 'This sounds like that,' " he told MTV News. "Everything about it, from the beat to even the way I'm flowing - you never really heard me rap so sleepily. I really did those verses in my crib and just loved the way they felt."
• Cole originally sang the hook by himself until Roc Nation founder Jay-Z gave him a bit of advice. "When I played it for Jay-Z, his first words were, 'Yo, you should get Miguel on this,'" the rapper recalled to Billboard magazine.
• Cole raps in his first verse to his crush that he "even wrote the song 'Dreams' for you." This is a reference to an actual cut "Dreams," that appeared on the rapper's 2009 mixtape, The Warm Up . The track finds Cole fantasizing about murdering the boyfriend of a girl he barely knows, which would then give him the opportunity to console her.
• Cole came up with the concept for the video, which sees him kill Miguel over jealousy of his relationship with a woman. It was shot in Cole's hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina except for the final scene where he buries Miguel out in the woods on the outskirts of the city.
• It was Jay-Z who persuaded Cole to release this as the lead single from Born Sinner . "There was a point when I almost went with this other song as the [first] single," he explained to MTV News. "My team and people around me were like, 'Yo, you're bugging; you need to go with 'Power Trip.' So I called Mark Pitts, my manager, and he's like, 'You need to call Jay.'" He added: "His perspective on that - and period, since he's seen so much in the game - he really set me straight and let me know I was bugging. He was like, 'You've got to an opportunity to come in and usher a new sound, go with that!'"
• Cole told Rolling Stone that he created the track in his living room. "I made that beat," he said, "wrote that song, recorded the rough version of the vocals in my crib."
• The song samples "No More," a track from jazz flautist Hubert Laws' 1972 album Morning Star .
• Cole shouts out his landlord, Mohammed, who rented him an apartment in his early days in Jamaica, New York. "Even back then when I was up there in Mohammed crib Paying 1700 for the rent, money well spent No heater, but a n—- made heat, may I vent." Cole raps that the ridiculous amount he had to pay for rent in New York was money well spent. This was because being in the Big Apple helped him make the connections that eventually landed him his deal with Roc Nation.

J Cole makes public apology to Kendrick Lamar, two days after diss track release

J Cole has taken a u-turn in his spat with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar , apologising to his former collaborator mere days after calling him out.

The “Power Trip” artist unexpectedly released his latest album, Might Delete Later on Friday (5 April). In its closing track, “7 Minute Drill”, Cole, 39, hits out at Lamar, following Lamar’s prior declaration that he is a cut above Cole and Drake in the rap industry.

During a performance at his Dreamville festival in North Carolina on Sunday (7 April), Cole told the audience of his regrets about responding to Lamar on the track.

“I’m so proud of [ Might Delete Later ], except for one part,” Cole began his address.

“It’s one part of that s*** that makes me feel like, man that’s the lamest s*** I did in my f***in’ life, right? And I know this is not what a lot of people want to hear.”

In “7 Minute Drill”, Cole criticised some of Lamar’s work, calling his 2022 album, Mr Morale & the Big Steppers , “tragic” and claiming that the “Humble” artist “fell off like The Simpsons ”.

However, at the festival, Cole told his fans that even though he didn’t want to comment, he felt moved to make the track because “the world wanna see blood”.

“I was conflicted because, one I know my heart and I know how I feel about my peers, these two n****s that I just been blessed to even stand beside in this game, let alone chase they greatness,” Cole explained, referring to Lamar and Drake. “So I felt conflicted ‘cause I’m like, bruh I don’t even feel no way.”

He then went on to note that releasing the diss track “spiritually [felt] bad on me” before prompting the audience to show some appreciation for Lamar.

“I want to say right now tonight, how many people think Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest motherf*****s to ever touch a f***in’ microphone? Dreamville, y’all love Kendrick Lamar, correct? As do I.”

“So,” Cole continued, “I just want to come up here and publicly be like, bruh, that was the lamest, goofiest s***. I say all that to say it made me feel like 10 years ago when I was moving incorrectly. And I pray that God will line me back up on my purpose and on my path, I pray that my n**** really didn’t feel no way and if he did, my n****, I got my chin out.

“Take your best shot, I’ma take that shit on the chin boy, do what you do. All good. It’s love. And I pray that y’all are like, forgive a n**** for the misstep and I can get back to my true path. Because I ain’t gonna lie to y’all. The past two days felt terrible. It let me know how good I’ve been sleeping for the past 10 years.”

During a guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s song “Like This” in March, Lamar dismissed claims that he, Drake and J Cole were considered equals at their craft . While many rap fans have dubbed the artists as “the big three”, Lamar retorted: “It’s just big me.”

Drake’s only response to Lamar’s words so far has been a brief comment made during a performance in Florida, days after the track’s release.

J Cole says he "felt terrible" after releasing a song aimed at fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar last week, and vowed to pull the track off streaming services.

Titled 7 Minute Drill, Cole's song was a reply to Lamar's verse on the hit single Like That, in which the star asserted his dominance of the rap game.

Cole hit back by saying Lamar had "fallen off like the Simpsons" and called his latest album "tragic".

But speaking on Sunday, Cole apologised for his "lame" and "goofy" response.

"I ain't gonna lie to y'all the past two days felt terrible," he told an audience at the Dreamville Festival in North Carolina. "I damn near had a relapse".

He asked for forgiveness from Lamar, calling the song a "mis-step" and said he hoped to "get back to my true path".

What's Kendrick Lamar’s beef with Drake and J Cole?

The war of words started last year on the song First Person Shooter, where Cole suggested that he, Drake and Lamar were the current "big three" names in hip-hop.

Lamar took exception to that description. In a fiery verse on the song Like That, he declared there was no "big three - it's just big me".

He went on to call Drake and Cole's best verses insubstantial - "a light pack" - and claimed he was the Prince to Drake's Michael Jackson.

'War time'

Speaking on stage on Sunday, Cole said he had felt pressured to write a comeback.

"Y'all heard that bazooka that was dropped on the game, right? Boy, I must have had a thousand missed calls. Texts flooded."

Friends and colleagues were calling it "war time" and said they wanted to "see blood," he explained.

"I was conflicted because... I know how I feel about my peers, these two [rappers] that I've been blessed to even stand beside... But the world want to see blood."

Although he tried to keep the tone of his verse friendly, the end result "didn't sit right with my spirit".

He went on to praise Lamar's back catalogue, calling him "one of the greatest", and hoping that he hadn't taken offence.

"And if he did, I got my chin out. Take your best shot, I'll take that on the chin."

Cole went on to promise that 7 Minute Drill would be removed, or updated, from streaming services.

Appropriately enough, the album it appears on is called Might Delete Later.

De-escalation

It's unusual, but not unheard of, for rappers to retract diss tracks after their release. In fact, this isn't even Cole's first brush with the phenomenon.

In 2011, at the start of Cole's career, veteran New York MC Canibus released a song called J Clone, accusing the up-and-comer of disrespect.

But 48 hours later, he posted an apology video, saying: "Hip-hop has spoken up loud and clear, it's a 'Cole world' right now, and you're reigning champ".
