2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Owner's Manual

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS has a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine with up to 304 horsepower. A manual transmission is standard, and there is an available automatic transmission. The 6.2-liter V8 engine complements the high-performance Camaro SS wonderfully. Although reviewers noted that the Camaro isn’t as fast, drivers, after a test drive, said it’s one of the most powerful base engines in the class. They added that this model rides softer over bumps than the Mustang. The 2010 Camaro consumes up to 17/29 miles per gallon, which is higher than the class average. Standard Camaro features include keyless entry, air conditioning, cruise control, CD player with satellite radio and power front seats. Available equipment and features include a six-way power driver’s seat, leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote engine start (automatic transmission only), USB audio and Bluetooth.

Tested: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS V8

The arrival of the Chevy Camaro finally completes Detroit's pony-car trifecta. But did Motown save the best for last?

Motor vehicle, Automotive design, Vehicle, Transport, Hood, Automotive lighting, Headlamp, Grille, Automotive exterior, Car,

While we will save the official comparison test for later, we can aver that the neo-Camaro offers the freshest and most modern package of the three. Built as it is on GM’s superb Zeta full-size platform, the Camaro sports a fully independent suspension along with evocative, contemporary styling that thankfully misses being totally retro. We entered into this first test of the long-awaited 2010 Camaro with high expectations. Indeed, with a 304-hp, 3.6-liter V-6, the base Camaro is nearly as powerful as the Mustang GT, so we were champing at the bit to see what the Camaro could do in SS form with a 6.2-liter V-8 stuffed under its hood.

How Quick Is It?

Text, Red, White, Line, Font, Carmine, Electric blue, Symbol, Maroon, Cobalt blue,

With the six-speed automatic, the Camaro SS can hit 60 mph in a scant 4.6 seconds, with the quarter-mile arriving in 13.1 at 109 mph. At 4.8 seconds, the Camaro with the six-speed manual takes 0.2 second longer to hit 60 but overtakes the automatic by the quarter-mile mark, clocking 13 seconds flat at 111 mph. (The L99 V-8 hooked to the automatic is rated for 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque; the LS3-and-manual combo is good for 426 hp and 420 lb-ft.) For comparison, the 315-hp 2010 Ford Mustang GT and the 376-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi-powered Dodge Challenger R/T do the trick in 5.1 seconds. The better-matched but pricier Challenger SRT8—with a 425-horse, 6.1-liter Hemi—hits 60 in 4.8 seconds. So until Ford gets the Mustang GT into the gym and stuffs more power under its hood, Chevy has earned bragging rights in the segment where burliness arguably counts the most.

On a drive that took us along the scenic roads east of San Diego, California, we also found the Camaro’s roadholding to be quite stellar—it grips with 0.92 g on a skidpad—thanks in part to the independent multilink suspension out back and the stickiness of the fat, Z-rated 245/45-front and 275/40-rear Pirelli P Zero tires mounted on 20-inch wheels. The variable-ratio steering rack delivers great on-center feel, similar to that which we’ve praised on the Camaro’s platformmate, the Pontiac G8.

Stick to the Stick

The shift and clutch actions of the six-speed manual transmission were amiable enough for an average commute, with the lower gears close enough to keep the engine in its—admittedly large—sweet spot much of the time. Longer hauls might wear on your left leg a bit, but the same can be said for the other muscle machines with which the Camaro competes.

We recognize, however, that the only way some customers are going to get a Camaro in their driveway is to specify the six-speed automatic, which comes with shift buttons behind the steering-wheel spokes. In manual mode, the left button actuates downshifts, the right, upshifts; and gears are held until you ask for the next one. Chevy also added a sport automatic mode, selected by simply moving the gear lever down into the M position. Doing so raises the shift points higher (perhaps too high), holds gears for longer (perhaps too long), and forces downshifts to happen more abruptly and aggressively during deceleration. We found that driving in sport mode made for rather ungraceful jerking during a spirited mountain-road romp, so we preferred the predictability of shifting for ourselves using the wheel buttons, even if the shifts came after the usual manumatic delay. Our advice is to stick with the stick, if at all possible.

Quiet + Calm Ride = Surprising Comfort

The Camaro SS packs a few surprises, however. The L99 and LS3 engines are both remarkably—and disappointingly — quiet, at least from inside the cabin (based on the shell-shocked looks on the faces of people we blew by, it appears that it’s plenty loud on the outside). For high-speed cruising, this is a good thing, as there is no shred of that exhausting boominess that can add misery to long-haul muscle-car motoring. But at the same time, we found ourselves wanting a bit more of an audible reminder that we were driving something with 426 freakin’ horses under the hood. Even at full tilt, the engine didn’t seem to have the trumpetlike blat of the Challenger R/T’s 5.7-liter, let alone the NASCAR-worthy howl of the 6.1-liter in the SRT8.

Other surprises include the eerily serene ride and the utter absence of wind noise. Particularly at freeway speeds, the Camaro’s Zeta roots pay dividends, with the suspension striking a brilliant balance between lively, grippy roadholding and wonderfully compliant damping. Meanwhile, the SS offers decent feedback through the steering wheel. You could cruise down Woodward all day in this thing and never feel beat up. Try that in a '69.

At higher speeds, however, is where one misses things like outward vision. Although looking over the long, beveled hood is a view every muscle-car fan will relish, the low roof, high waistline, and wall-like rear pillars make the car drive big (not good for twisty two-lanes), a complaint we also level at the Challenger. Lane changing is a point-and-squirt affair rather than anything involving an over-the-shoulder check. The exterior mirrors help, with the bonus that they give you a close-up view of the Camaro’s sexy hips. The interior mirror is utterly useless, though; all one sees when glancing rearward is an ocean of black roof and C-pillars the width of a Sequoia (the tree or the Toyota).

Also disappointing are the hard plastics that we had hoped were banished from GM interiors, but they’ve clearly found their way into the Camaro. Furthermore, the inset dashboard trim piece that was to be rendered—at least optionally—in a cool illuminated band of light-tube trickery has become a cloth insert. It looks good in a contrasting color, but it’s drab when it matches the rest of an all-black cabin. And finally, as great as the high-mounted “squircle-shaped” gauges and cool center stack look, the script is tiny and the buttons can be ergonomically challenging in operation.

But the Camaro is beguiling. It has a strong design and a strong heritage and delivers seriously strong acceleration. Especially given its aggressive pricing ($22,995 for the base V-6, $30,995 for the SS), it is likely to do well with its established fan base and should even earn a few more admirers in its new life. And not insignificantly, the EPA just gave it excellent fuel-economy ratings . Could it be better? Absolutely, but at least its deficiencies involve its interior detailing more than its dynamics. Besides, in these tumultuous, unpredictable times, we should celebrate the mere fact that cars like this are here at all. Welcome to the herd, little pony.

very intermittent hesitation issue with M6 ls3 2010 SS

texsean

  • Add to quote

I have a few weird very intermittent issues.. 1. My service tire pressure monitor system needs servicing message comes on occasionally and either both back tires or usually passenger side rear show -- instead of pressure. They had the car 3 weeks in dealer and said they replaced the sensors due to low batteries but 5 miles later after picking it up at stonebriar in Frisco tx it came back on same rear sensors arg... I dont want to bring it back right now after driving a slow loaner for nearly a month i am glad to have it back but will bring it back soon. 2. Sometimes (like once every week or 2 since owning it) it wont break traction and seems to be starved of fuel or air when i get on it or downshift (not 1st from forth or anything stupid) and get on it. Like it boggs down.. even without the air conditioner on or nanny off or on wet or dry no pattern) then takes off after a a few seconds like a bat out of hell. It did have abs and service stabilitrack light on too not long ago but those are fixed so far since it went to shop a month ago. Chevy Dealer said that was caused by my Maf intermittent coms. and they replaced that too Along with my o2 sensors. it ran OK for a week but low and behold it still does this occasionally (bogs down) I am going to see if its the fuel filter when it stops raining.. or injectors? Pump? I'm lost because its so intermittent. my car is a 2010 M6 LS3 SS 1 with CAI with 45k its awesome 90% of the time but does this occasionally even with fuse pull and all nannys off it usually does it when the tpms light is on but not always.. could the Computer seeing tire pressure issues cause it to have weak throttle response like this? Or likely not and maybe fuel filter or pump even though its only 45k? I have always have used 93 octane and put new irridium ix plugs as well (better power seems like since plugs when its running good). It also did this before the CAI. I don't want to trust Stonebriar because 3 weeks of a Chevy Cruz loaner with no cruise control(no kidding) sucked. I can't afford to do a resonator delete just yet to open up the exhaust. I can run 4.105 to 4.7 0-60 when she's running right and no codes but when she's not I only do 6 second 0-60 and that's all because of the first 60 ft of hesitation. I am confident its not pushrod or anything too serious because it comes and goes. Usually fine and awesome... any ideas? I recently installed catch can but it did this same thing prior to the cai and catch can. I did check codes and have none until today and it's power train code p0107 manifold absolutepressure/barometric pressure circuit low. But I think the code was because I started the car without the sensor on top of Throttle body off when I unplugged it to get to the hoses and then plugged it back in. Clearing it though makes it come back or clearing fails.

Update.. just replaced the long hard plastic vaccuum hose that goes over the throttle body with 3/8 fuel hose I had (because it doesnt appear to seat well or seal well on the ends) and reset the codes and it is cleared now. But like I said.. this issue is there when codes are not present too. I probably hit that hose when I installed the catch can and made it leak or something). Oh.. my catch can is a closed system no breather.

Sundown

Well don't plan on Changing the fuel filter unless you want to remove the fuel tank . From what I have read they are attached to the fuel pump inside the tank .

Hope not but prepared to if I have to.. I got ramps.. Think now it may be this TSB... Some customers may comment on an intermittent engine hesitation or flutter. This condition may be caused by the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor bank 1 connector terminals having intermittent conditions or poor connections. This will result in the engine control module (ECM) temporarily being unable to determine engine position and it will stop fueling and sparking. The ECM will require at least one engine revolution to resynchronize (resync) and if it does, it will not set a DTC.

Fixed.. at least for now.. the tpms I just walked around car clockwise after setting it to relearn and running nearly a full can of seafoam in the tank and maybe 4 Oz in th block and the -- and tpms error is gone & Car is running great. Go figure. I still may bring it in though and have them look at it and change the oil and filter now that it has seafoam in it for a hundred miles.

Tlf on another note.. my oil after 300 miles is clean and looks new even after the seafoam so I doubt it was carbon build up.

Chevy Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (20 Popular Models)

Adaptive cruise control is increasingly common in mainstream vehicles, and Chevrolet has several cars, SUVs, and trucks with adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

chevrolet

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

Older vehicles’ basic cruise control system helps maintain a steady cruising speed for a relaxing long-distance drive. Still, it cannot do what the newer, more sophisticated adaptive cruise control can.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the vehicle’s speed to match the car ahead subject to the driver’s predefined speed, which is excellent for highway cruising and avoiding collisions.

Newer Chevys have adaptive cruise control, adjusting the vehicle’s speed to maintain a pre-selected distance from the car ahead.

While Chevrolet equips many pickups with cruise control for on-road cruising, the following alternatives may be worth exploring for their more-comfortable ride quality or greater payload and towing capacities:

  • Ram trucks with cruise control .
  • Ford trucks with cruise control .
  • Jeep trucks with cruise control .
  • GMC trucks with cruise control .

Meanwhile, the automakers below have strong picks for cars and SUVs with adaptive cruise control:

  • Honda SUVs with ACC .
  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .

Chevy Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 chevrolet spark.

2022 is the final production year for this little hatchback.

All Chevrolet Spark models from 2013 to 2022 had cruise control in the higher 1LT, 2LT, and ACTIV trims; the base LS trim did not have cruise control.

#2 Chevrolet Sonic

Chevrolet discontinued this extra-small sedan or hatchback after 2020.

From 2012 to 2020, most Chevy Sonic models (LT, LTZ, RS, Premier) have cruise control, except for the base LS trim.

Only the Chevy Sonic’s LT trim in 2012 did not have cruise control; LT in other model years had the system.

#3 Chevrolet Cobalt

2010 marked the end of the line for the compact Cobalt sedan or coupe.

Most Chevrolet Cobalt models did not have cruise control, except for the more-expensive SS and LTZ trims from 2007 to 2010.

2005 and 2006 Chevy Cobalts had cruise control in most trims, except for the base model.

#4 Chevrolet Malibu

The midsize Chevrolet Malibu sedan has had standard cruise control from 2006 to the current model, while the ones from 2002 to 2005 only had the system in the higher trims.

Unfortunately, no Chevy Malibu has an adaptive cruise control system.

#5 Chevrolet Impala

This large sedan ceased production after 2020.

All Chevy Impala models from 2006 to 2020 had a cruise control system.

However, Chevy Impalas from 2002 to 2005 only had cruise control in the higher trims.

#6 Chevrolet Volt

The Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid had standard cruise control from 2011 to 2019.

#7 Chevrolet Camaro

This famous muscle car is available in coupe or convertible, with many powerful trims to suit various tastes for speed.

All Chevy Camaros from 2010 onwards have had cruise control as a standard provision.

No Chevy Camaro has the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

#8 Chevrolet Corvette

Cruise control has been standard in all Chevy Corvette models since 2001.

Chevy SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#9 chevrolet trax.

Chevy Trax subcompact SUVs from 2015 to 2022 only had cruise control in the higher trims.

The base Chevy Trax LS trim did not have the cruise control system.

#10 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The Trailblazer is slightly larger than the Trax but is still a subcompact SUV.

Chevy Trailblazers have had cruise control in the upper trims since 2021, leaving only the base LS trim without the system.

Cruise control is also available in most Chevy Trailblazer models from 2002 to 2009, except for 2002 to 2004 when only the pricier trims had it.

No Chevy Trailblazer has the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#11 Chevrolet Equinox

Honda CR-Vs and Toyota RAV4s dominate the small SUV class, but the Chevy Equinox stands out with its stylish exterior and precise handling.

Chevy Equinox compact SUVs have had standard cruise control since 2006, with the 2005 base trim the only exception.

Unfortunately, Chevrolet Equinox does not have the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control system.

#12 Chevrolet Blazer

The midsize two-row Chevy Blazer SUV has had cruise control as a standard provision since 2019.

Chevy Blazer does not have adaptive cruise control, however.

#13 Chevrolet Traverse

Midsize three-row Chevrolet Traverse models from 2022 onwards have had at least the basic cruise control system, while the Premier and High Country trims have the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

From 2018 to 2021, only Chevy Traverse’s High Country trim had adaptive cruise control, while the rest had conventional cruise control.

Between its 2009 debut and 2017, all Chevy Traverse models had cruise control.

#14 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe is one of two full-size SUVs within Chevrolet’s lineup; Chevy Suburban is the other (next on the list).

Since 2002, all Chevy Tahoe models have had cruise control.

Although it’s a massive three-row SUV, Chevrolet Tahoe does not have the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#15 Chevrolet Suburban

The Suburban has such a huge interior that you’d need to settle for a van if you want anything bigger.

Like its Tahoe stablemate, the three-row Chevy Suburban has had cruise control as standard equipment since 2002.

Unfortunately, no Chevrolet Suburban has adaptive cruise control, the more sophisticated distance management system that smaller and cheaper SUVs have.

Chevy Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#16 chevrolet colorado.

Midsize trucks are increasingly popular due to their smaller dimensions than full-size pickups for maneuverability while having a reasonable towing capacity for broad utility.

Except for 2004 and 2005, all Chevy Colorado models have cruise control, including the base Work Truck (WT) trim.

No Chevy Colorado has adaptive cruise control, the speed management system that allows the vehicle to slow or accelerate depending on the car ahead.

#17 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The full-size light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500 has had cruise control in the higher trims since 2019, although the system was a standard provision from 2012 to 2018.

No Chevy Silverado 1500 had the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

#18 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Most Chevy Silverado 2500HD trims have had cruise control since 2020, except for the base Work Truck (WT) trim, where the system is optional.

From 2012 to 2019, all Chevy Silverados had cruise control as a standard provision; older models only had cruise control in the upper trims.

#19 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

Since 2020, the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado 3500HD has had cruise control in the pricier trims, with the system optional for the base trim.

Silverado 3500HD models from 2012 to 2019 had cruise control as standard equipment.

Chevy Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#20 chevrolet bolt ev.

The Chevy Bolt is the American company’s first EV, and all the models from 2017 have had standard cruise control.

Adaptive cruise control has been available in the higher trims since 2022.
