Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M5

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M5 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M5 will be reinstated shortly.

One lane of the M5 southbound is closed due to an accident this evening (Friday, May 3)

One lane of the M5 in Gloucestershire is closed following a crash this evening (Friday, May 3). There are long delays southbound between junction 11 and 12 near Gloucester.

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix first reported the crash at 7.24pm. It said: "Long delays and one lane closed due and incident on M5 Southbound from J11A A417 (Gloucester / Cirencester) to J12 A430 (Quedgeley / Hardwicke)."

Live M5 and M4 traffic ahead of bank holiday weekend

There is traffic building on the M5 and is likely to get heavier as people head south through the West Country.

Motorists should prepare for the likelihood of long delays on the M5, the M4 and major routes through the West Country today ahead of the bank holiday getaway. The South West is expected to be flooded with holidaymakers this weekend as the early May bank holiday begins.

There are already a number of roads seeing congestion build. The M5 around junction 17 has heavy holiday traffic, and there is slow moving traffic at junction 19 due to a broken down vehicle. There is also congestion on the M4 westbound between junctions 19 and 21 with motorists being warned of delays.

While the Met Office has warned the weekend is likely going to be a washout, we'll be here rounding up all the travel news you'll need before you enjoy the long weekend.

A major operation targeting dodgy vans and light commercial vehicles on the M5 saw a number of vehicles seized and drivers penalised. The crackdown, which took place at Gordano Services, was conducted by Avon and Somerset Police in collaboration with several agencies including the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Trading Standards, and the Environment Agency.

During the operation on Wednesday, May 1, police stopped 23 drivers, seizing four vehicles and prevented six from continuing their journey until issues were rectified. This initiative is part of Operation Trader, aimed at ensuring commercial and light goods vehicles are roadworthy.

The police force's Roads Policing Unit shared details of the operation on social media, stating: "On Wednesday we carried out #OpTransporter at Gordano Services on the M5, an operation working alongside @DVSAgovuk to target vehicles which appeared to be poorly maintained. 23 Drivers stopped 13 Offences reported four vehicles seized six prohibited six drivers educated."

The AA has highlighted the dangers of defective and poorly maintained vehicles, noting that they were responsible for over 1,700 road casualties in 2021. Defective brakes and tyres were the leading causes of these collisions, including dozens of fatal ones. In the Avon and Somerset region alone, there were 62 fatalities due to road accidents in 2023, reports Bristol Live .

Taunton Police have held yet another 'stop check' as part of an on-going campaign they are calling 'Operation Trader'. It comes after officers stopped 26 vehicles with serious faults at the Hankridge Farm retail park in February.

This time they focused attention on a busy industrial estate where 18 vehicles were stopped with 17 found to have 'an immediate or dangerous issue'. Acting Inspector Stephen Whatley said: "When vehicles are not maintained or are neglected by their owners, they become a serious risk to the public. The aim of this operation is to identify those vehicles which pose a risk, engage with the owners or companies, and carry out balanced and proportionate enforcement."

A drive-by 'shooting' during a serious road-rage incident on the M5 has led to a man being arrested. Devon and Cornwall Police said that a projectile was fired from an 'air weapon' after a silver Mercedes van was reportedly being driven aggressively on the M5.

The victim's car was approached at speed from behind by a silver Mercedes van which undertook and cut in front of his vehicle. The driver of the van allegedly swore at the victim before later pulling up alongside him.

The road-rage incident took place on the northbound carriageway of the M5 between junctions 28 and 27, near Cullompton, in Devon , at around 10.10am on Wednesday, April 17. A man, aged in his 30s and from the Exeter area, has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause another to fear unlawful violence.

Devon and Cornwall Police's full statement said: "Police investigating a report of a road rage incident in which a projectile was fired at a car on the M5 in Devon are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage. The incident happened on the northbound carriageway of the motorway near Cullompton, between junctions 28 and 27, at around 10.10am on Wednesday 17 April.

"The male victim’s car was approached at speed from behind by a silver Mercedes van which undertook the vehicle before cutting in front of it. It was reported the driver of the van gesticulated and swore at the victim before later pulling up alongside him. A projectile was then allegedly fired from the van at the victim’s car, causing damage.

"Police believe the projectile could have been a ball-bearing-type object fired from an air weapon. A man aged in his 30s from the Exeter area has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause another to fear unlawful violence. He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
