With both wellness travel and solo travel on the rise , it’s no surprise that solo wellness retreats are growing in popularity. Traveling alone in a way that benefits your physical and mental health is easy — with no one else in tow, you’re able to fully focus on yourself and your needs and travel exactly how you like. This article explains what a solo wellness retreat is, why you should consider going on one, and some of the best wellness retreats for solo travelers in the U.S.

A solo retreat is a trip where you travel alone and stay somewhere or do activities that offer positive benefits for your physical or emotional health . Wellness solo retreats can be specific resorts that offer retreats or wellness-focused activities. Activities can include fitness, yoga, meditation, self-discovery workshops, breathwork, spa treatments, or outdoor experiences. Most retreats don’t have an official rule that you have to be alone, but all of the retreats on our list are especially welcoming or cater to solo travelers.

Going on a wellness retreat alone means that you can interpret and manifest wellness in whatever way you’d like . If wellness means hiking in the wilderness to you, your solo retreat can give you time to hike as much as you’d like and focus on your specific wellness needs without interruption.

Taking time to focus on yourself also allows for self-care in whatever way best serves you while you travel exactly how you like. When everything is organized your way, and you aren’t cutting your needs short to meet others’ needs, then relaxation, rejuvenation, and even healing can result. Solo wellness travel can increase your self-awareness and help you set goals for the future, encourage personal growth, improve confidence, and boost independence. It may also invigorate you to challenge yourself or try new things in a judgment-free space.

As 2024 kicks off, it's time to plan some of the most mind-blowing adventures the world has to offer – using the opportunity to uncover new parts of yourself along the way.

To get you started, we've delved into Lonely Planet's  Your Trip Starts Here , and picked 24 trip ideas suitable for everyone, especially those who want to go on a journey of self-discovery.

Whatever trip you take, keep in mind two essential tips: slow down, and leave your comfort zone. Then you can expect some truly meaningful memories as you set out to travel with purpose.

Gravestones at the Jewish cemetery, Warsaw, Poland

1. Trace the history of Warsaw’s Jewish community, Poland

Distance: 7km (4 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot Difficulty: Easy

With glittering new office blocks, a meticulously recreated Old Town and the soaring Stalinist Palace of Culture and Science , when you walk through Warsaw today it's hard to imagine how broken the city was 80 years ago when Nazi Germany did its utmost to wipe Poland ’s capital off the map.

In 1943, as if in a dress rehearsal, Hitler liquidated Warsaw’s Jewish Ghetto – about 2.5 sq km (1 sq mile) of the city, where they had crammed some 400,000 Jews. Disease, execution and starvation in the ghetto, and later in concentration camps, claimed the lives of the vast majority.

Tracing the historic landmarks, memorials and museums through the Muranów and Mirów neighborhoods of Warsaw will provide insight into the city’s Jewish community, both past and present. It will also remind you that a kinder, better world is possible if we foster forgiveness and compassion.

2. Bangkok to Singapore by rail

Distance: 1900km (1181 miles)  Mode of transport: Train  Difficulty: Moderate

Discover what makes Southeast Asia tick on this epic train trip, a tale of three thrilling countries told over 1900km (1181 miles) of track. Southeast Asia’s most luxurious train, the Eastern & Oriental Express  whisks passengers from Singapore to Bangkok in four lavish days, but you’ll need a Gordon Gekko–sized budget to board it. Fortunately, there is also a low-cost way to zip along the Malay Peninsula by rail, and it delivers a deep dive into the region’s rich cultural melting pot as part of the package.

Traveling on ordinary passenger trains between Bangkok and Singapore , you’ll mingle with people from every walk of life – monks heading to monasteries, students on college breaks, city families traveling for up-country reunions – while villages zip by in a blur of temple spires and minarets. Liberated from the notion that luxury is the same as fulfillment, this crash course in the cultures and customs of Thailand , Malaysia and Singapore offers priceless memories, all for a ticket price of under US$100.

Motorcyclists on a highway with mountains in the distance, Ladakh, India

3. Loop across Ladakh on two wheels

Distance: 894km (555 miles)  Mode of transport: Motorbike  Difficulty: Tough

Think you know mountains? Try tackling the road that corkscrews like a python through the high-altitude valleys of Ladakh . The motorbike trip from Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh and Kashmir is one of the world’s most thrilling road journeys: a life-affirming test of resolve and endurance with a side serving of jaw-dropping natural beauty. The rugged highway is a journey through the soul as well as the Himalayan landscape, best attempted on an Indian-built Enfield Bullet motorbike.

Like a mountaineering ascent, this journey of self-reliance will force you to look inside yourself as well as out at the scenery. Between Manali and Srinagar , 894km (555 miles) of road through wind-scoured wilds, sawtooth ridges and parched Himalayan valleys, with just the odd living thing to remind you that this isn’t, in fact, the surface of the moon. For many, the trip is transcendental, offering unseen and unlimited perspectives on nature and oneself. Expect an emotional journey to rival the seemingly endless miles you cover on the dusty tarmac.

A woman runs down a sand dune near Deadvlei, Namib Desert, Namibia

4. Take an overland odyssey through Sub-Saharan Africa

Distance: 10,000km (6210 miles)  Mode of transport: Overland vehicle  Difficulty : Easy

Taking you deep into  Africa 's wilderness, this overland adventure promises one adrenaline rush after another, sandwiched between moments of contemplation. Encounters with nature are almost unreal: mesmerized by the immense African elephant casually crossing the dusty road in front of your safari truck, it may take you a moment to realize there’s also a black rhino quietly grazing in the grasslands beyond. Turn around and you see a family of giraffes feasting in a cluster of acacia trees nearby, their hilariously long blue tongues expertly navigating around the long thorns to reach succulent leaves.

It’s a moment you might experience in just about any one of the region’s national parks, in fact. This is a trip that allows you to make peace with the knowledge that life and the world around us will always contain mystery and some unknowns – and that's okay. It's a thought to unknot the shoulders. Only on an extended trip across East and Southern Africa can you begin to fully appreciate how wild and wonderful, fragile and complex this corner of the world really is.

A cyclist on a road by Lake Pukaki, South Island, New Zealand

5. Cycle New Zealand’s Tour Aotearoa

Distance: 3200km (1990 miles)  Mode of transport: Bicycle  Difficulty: Moderate

Ride from tip to tip of New Zealand on this two-wheeled quest through old-growth forests, past smoldering volcanoes and deserted beaches. In recent years, New Zealand’s government decided to invest in building cycle trails – a prescient move, given the importance of sustainable travel and how well-trodden some regions were becoming.

It inspired Jonathan Kennett, a celebrated New Zealand cyclist who began pioneering mountain-biking routes in the country in the 1980s, to attempt to piece together as many of the official new trails as possible in order to ride from the top of New Zealand to its southernmost tip at Bluff. By taking each day as it comes, this is a journey that allows you to stay present and in the moment. Tour Aotearoa is an excellent way to practice mindfulness and succumb to the serenity of being self-aware.

6. Walk Lhasa’s pilgrim circuits, Tibet

Distance: 8km (11 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot  Difficulty: Easy

Walking one of Lhasa ’s pilgrim circuits is like nothing you will experience elsewhere. Most pilgrims ceaselessly twirl hand-sized personal prayer wheels; a few carry larger versions supported by a harness. Some even carry out full-body prostrations around the circuit, dressed in protective leather aprons and wearing wooden blocks on their hands. All walk in a single direction, toward an invisible common goal. It's a reminder of a greater, noble truth found in Buddhism: life is suffering.

Inside the temples that line the circuit, the air is thick with the heady smells of yak butter and juniper, as devotees spoon fragrant herbs into incense burners or top up lamps from personal flasks of molten butter. Monks bless visitors with a splash of holy water or a tap from an ancient relic, as Tantric drumming booms from deep in the building like some primeval heartbeat. It is a scene that has scarcely changed in centuries, either in appearance or in the intensity of religious devotion. This is the spiritual heart of Tibet.

A man hikes on a boardwalk, Gulung Mulu National Park, Borneo, Malaysia

7. Trek the Headhunter’s Trail, Malaysian Borneo

Distance: 22.5km (14 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot, boat and bus  Difficulty: Moderate

On some journeys, you look at the scenery. On the Headhunter’s Trail in Borneo ’s Gulung Mulu National Park , the scenery – or at least, those parts of the scenery with fur, feathers, scales and eyes – look at you, warily, as if you were a visitor from another world. Most travellers to this legendary reserve fly in and out, missing the best part of the experience: the understanding that being in nature is a soothing antidote to modern living.

On the old overland trail between the park headquarters and Limbang on the Brunei border, you’ll make your way through dense, dripping vegetation, half-deafened by the noises of the jungle. After long, draining days of hiking, meandering boat trips on jungle rivers and overnight stops in tribal longhouses, you’ll emerge with a newfound respect for the rainforest and the people and creatures who call it home.

8.  Embark on a music pilgrimage through the USA’s South

Distance: 1308km (813 miles)  Mode of transport: Car  Difficulty: Easy

For anyone who loves music, the journey from Nashville to New Orleans might just be the most rewarding, exciting and spiritually enriching road trip imaginable: you get to experience music that changed the world in the very regions where it took shape. Nashville, Tennessee , nicknamed “Music City,” is both the epicenter of country music and the home of many other genres – indie and southern rock, rap, R&B, blues, electronic and jazz. It’s the perfect place to begin a journey through American music.

The I-40, known as the “Music Highway,” runs from Nashville to Memphis ; as you drive it, signs announce the names of icons who settled or were raised in this fertile region: Tina Turner, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and, of course, the King: Elvis Presley. This is a road trip through a musical wonderland, where museums, live venues and historic sites offer a joyful and insightful window into the South ’s culture and history. It also offers travelers the chance to experience how music enhances our feelings as humans.

9. Reconnect with nature on the Galápagos Islands

Distance: 240km (149 miles)  Mode of transport: Boat/on foot  Difficulty: Moderate

Few places conjure up as much awe as the Galápagos . The remote volcanic archipelago, called “Las Islas Encantadas” ("the Enchanted Islands”) by early explorers, captivated Charles Darwin, who spent five weeks here in 1835. The English naturalist marveled at the unusual plant and animal life he encountered – species that had developed in isolation from the continent, but which often differed from island to island.

The experience sparked his imagination, and featured prominently in his groundbreaking work On the Origin of Species , which forever changed our understanding of natural history. From giant-tortoise encounters to snorkeling with sea lions, seeing the fauna and flora of this equatorial archipelago will inspire wonder in our world and remind you that the laws of nature are immutable forces that exist beyond human control – it's a liberating thought.

10. Hike through the heart of Sicily

Distance: 180 km (112 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot  Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

Stacked theatrically around the steep peaks of Sicily ’s interior, Sutera is crowned by its “broken rock” – a craggy precipice that, according to legend, was split in two by lightning that struck at the moment of Christ’s death. Today, religion still shapes life in Sutera. Church bells bring people to worship several times daily; Semana Santa fills the streets with Easter processions that rival those in Spain for gilded, saint-worshiping splendor.

But few outside Sicily’s heartland know of this town – which, like many in Italy’s rural south, had seen its aging, fast-shrinking population so depleted that any new birth was greeted like the Second Coming. Experience the spirit of resilience and revival in Sicily’s sparsely populated interior, where restored pilgrim pathways such as the Magna Via Francigena are bringing new life to remote communities. You'll learn a simple philosophical lesson too: change is inevitable. Sometimes you have to drop your guard to make the most of life. Living doesn't only mean survival.

Two men riding horses gallop through the mountains in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia

11. Ride in the hoofprints of Kyrgyz nomads

Distance: 400km (249 miles)  Mode of transport: Horse  Difficulty: Tough

On a ride through Kyrgyzstan ’s celestial Tiān Shān Mountains on a long-distance loop, you’ll take in gorges, forests and the lakeside summer paradise of Song-Köl. The history of the Kyrgyz highlands, and the stories of those who live here, would be incomplete without one central thread: the horse, a creature woven as tightly with the region’s past as the fabrics once transported here along the Silk Road.

Even today, riding is one of the more comfortable ways to get around mountainous Kyrgyzstan, where the often hazardous roads make for slow progress by car. It’s also the fastest route to immersion in the hospitable culture of nomadic Kyrgyz shepherds – a revelationary reminder of kinship between cultures and our similarities as humans, too – plus the not-so-hospitable weather of the capricious Tiān Shān Mountains.

You may choose to ride the whole 400km (249-mile) loop out of Rot-Front, or just a section of it, but whether for three days or 30, a horse-trekking journey through Kyrgyzstan is a ticket to follow in the footsteps – hoofprints – of old Silk Road traders while exploring a land where the steppe, mountains and sky meet.

12. Stargaze on the Cambrian Mountains Astro Trail, Wales

Distance: 80km (50 miles)  Mode of transport: Car/on foot  Difficulty: Easy

When night falls in the Cambrian Mountains, the darkness is total. Nicknamed the “Desert of Wales ” for its vast expanses of nothingness (the name is certainly not due to its weather), this neck of the country is Wales at its wildest: rocky summits fall to wind-blasted, bracken-cloaked moors, river valleys and lichen-draped forests of oak and spruce where it’s quiet enough to hear your own heartbeat.

Drive the narrow lanes that whip through the drizzly heights to who-knows-where and the only traffic jam you’ll encounter is unruly sheep on the road. You’ll find space, hope and fresh perspective by wishing on stars and spotting planets in this starkly beautiful region. When you gaze upon the galaxies above in Wales, you'll be humbled by the grandeur of the universe and reminded of your own, small part in it all.

13. Take a pilgrimage of faith through Europe

Total Distance: 1916km (1190 miles)  Mode of transport: Car  Difficulty: Easy

This contemplative journey takes in scenic and spiritual highs, from inspiring places of worship and the home of a historic Passion Play to a stretch of the Romantic Road.

Circling through Germany , Switzerland and Austria by road, this contemporary pilgrimage journeys through the secular and the spiritual, taking in city sights, verdant valleys and marvelous mountain views alongside inspiring places of worship and a village that’s been staging an Easter pageant for nearly 400 years.

14. Hike across Canada’s smallest province on the Island Walk

Distance: 700km (435 miles)  Transport: On foot or bicycle  Difficulty: Moderate

Not everyone who hikes or cycles the Island Walk considers their journey a pilgrimage. Some choose to take on sections of this 700km (435-mile) trail around Prince Edward Island  (PEI) to enjoy the brisk ocean air, sandy beaches, forests and red-rock cliffs, or to stop for fresh seafood and leisurely chats.

Yet for others, circuiting Canada ’s smallest province is a challenge, an adventure or a personal quest. This epic coastal route around PEI pairs leisurely glimpses of local culture with a multiday physical challenge. A slow, thoughtful reminder to being grateful for the small things.

A group paddles a raft through rapids in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA

15. Raft through the Grand Canyon along the Colorado River, USA

Distance : 446km (277 miles)  Mode of transport: Motorized pontoon raft  Difficulty: Tough

The Colorado River drops a welcome mat at Lees Ferry, where the crumbling red beauty of the Vermilion Cliffs provides a backdrop for the water. Crossing this mighty river was a challenge for Native Americans, explorers and pioneers, all stymied by the steep, soaring walls of the surrounding Colorado Plateau. But thanks to an upward flex in the ancient rock layers, which exposed more weatherable rocks, erosive forces have carved a wide valley at Lees Ferry, making it the best crossing point for hundreds of kilometers.

Wild rapids and ancient rocks are a given on a white-water trip through the Grand Canyon ; friendships born of adventure are a cherished surprise. Once you push off, it’s too late. Or maybe it’s just the beginning. Whichever it turns out to be, your reliance on one another will remind you of the key ingredients to good personal relationships: shared vulnerability; kindness; and understanding.

Antarctic tourists watch a leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) very closely from the Zodiac on an ice floe in Cierva Cove

16. Awaken your true feelings crossing the Ross Sea, Antarctica

Distance: Around 3700km (2300 miles)  Mode of transport: Ship  Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Antarctica is stunning. No place on Earth compares to this vast white wilderness of elemental forces: snow, ice, water, rock. And as you journey through the storied but seldom-traveled vastness of the Ross Sea, you can experience Antarctica – and, indeed, yourself – to another degree. Here, the cold and wind are magnitudes greater. The tabular icebergs are more abundant. Wildlife scarcer.

Following in the footsteps of Antarctic explorers, you can marvel at dramatic snowbound landscapes and take in the awe-inspiring remnants of heroic expeditions, whilst using the seemingly endless openness as a way to sit with your feelings and name them: awe; impotent; overwhelmed; even boredom.

A young Indigenous boy in vivid traditional dress, Alberta, Canada

17. Trace the Indigenous roots of the Canadian Rockies

Distance: Around 1000km (621 miles)  Transport: Car or bus/shuttle  Difficulty: Easy

Many Indigenous cultures are oral ones with knowledge passed from generation to generation through legends, myths and historical narratives. On a road trip through Alberta , in western Canada, you can learn about the traditional cultures of the Canadian Rockies and surrounding regions through a series of Indigenous-led experiences.

As you explore museum exhibits, join guides for forest walks or take a wildlife tour on the Prairies, stop and listen. These are stories that need to be told – and heard – for they echo the past to instill empathy in us for the future. Pain does heal but scars will always remain.

Man in a poncho at Salar de Uyuni, Aitiplano, Bolivia

18. Step into the infinite in the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Distance: Around 150km (93miles)  Mode of transport: 4WD vehicle/on foot  Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

Bolivia ’s blinding-white Salar de Uyuni salt flats express the endless – and exploring these vast plains draws you into yourself and to the contemplation of infinity. This stark and surreal landscape covers some 12,100 sq km (4670 sq miles) and sits at an altitude of 3653m (11,984ft) above sea level.

From Uyuni, you’ll explore the flats on one of the 4WD tours that zip around the salar , stopping off at lakes and highlight spots, and taking to the salty surface for exhilarating hikes across this chalkboard expanse. The salt flats are an outward and inward challenge, as the brisk night air will constantly remind you.

A statue of St Patricks stands in front of Croagh Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, is a 764 metres mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo, Ireland.

19. Marry the secular and the sacred tracing the Tóchar Phádraig pilgrimage, Ireland

Distance: 35km (22 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot  Difficulty: Moderate

Medieval monks were not averse to a little cultural appropriation: taking pagan rituals and celebrations and repackaging them as Christian feast days; embellishing local lore into tales of miraculous endeavors; and peddling legends to encourage an increase in pilgrims. Ireland ’s most famous myth tells of St Patrick casting out the island’s snakes from the summit of Cruachán Aigle, a conical peak on the west coast, sometime in the 5th century.

Cruachán Aigle became Croagh Patrick – and the pilgrims followed. Sacred in pagan times, the mountain was also linked to Cruachan Aí – the seat of the high kings of Connaught – by a chariot trail now known as Tóchar Phádraig (St Patrick’s Causeway). Walking this pagan-cum-pilgrim trail offers a glimpse into Ireland’s complex history, but it is walking with intent – a key part of any pilgrimage – that elevates this route from the scenic to the profound, especially if it's wet, muddy, and slow-going. Under these conditions, we afford ourselves the space to be honest about our feelings.

Wildlife guide in canoe on the Zambezi River in Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

20. Shatter the idea of the individual self by piloting a canoe down the Zambezi River, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Distance: 70km (43 miles)  Mode of transport: Canoe  Difficulty: Difficult

A canoe safari is a visceral and intimate business – sometimes more hair-raising than being in a car, but more rewarding, too. Paddle your way through some of Africa’s wildest territory on a Zambezi canoe safari, steering among hippos by day and camping on remote river islands by night.

You function as the driver (and the engine) of your vehicle – the hushed voice of a guide is your prompt to paddle faster or jam an oar in the current and make a retreat. It's a gentle reminder that the individual self is an illusion. You and your surroundings are one. For canoeists, the best stretch is near the midway point, west of Lake Kariba on the Zimbabwe – Zambia border, where the river braids among myriad islands.

21. Walk the Lurujarri Dreaming Trail with the Goolarabooloo, Australia

Distance: 82km (51 miles)  Mode of transport: On foot  Difficulty: Moderate

Indigenous culture runs deep across the vast Kimberley region of northwestern Australia . When a Nyikina man, Paddy Roe, came to the Dampier Peninsula in the 1930s, the fading Jabirr Jabirr elders, bereft of suitable descendants, passed on custodianship of their Country (the Lore: songs, stories, customs and responsibilities, inherited from the earlier Ngumbarl and Djugun people), to the young Roe.

Having founded his Goolarabooloo Community at Millibinyari on Ngunungurrukun, Roe instigated the Lurujarri Heritage Trail in 1987 as a means for his own people to reconnect with Country and their traditional heritage, and as a way of cultivating respect for Country among non-Indigenous people.

Surrender to the rhythm of an ancient songline along the trail, a nine-day cultural immersion into this wild and wonderful corner of Western Australia and you'll realize that we're all interconnected: the past, present, and future all coexist.

A 4x4 takes on the desert sands of the Empty Quarter, Oman

22. Adventure through the endless dunes of the Empty Quarter, Oman

Distance: Around 300km (190 miles) one-way  Mode of transport: 4WD vehicle  Difficulty: Easy

Oman ’s Empty Quarter counts among the biggest blank spaces anywhere on Earth – making a journey into this sea of sand can be a surprising and sublime experience. It’s a world of windblown sand and rolling dunes, gilded dawns and bloody sunsets, loping camels and lonely wanderers.

Its featurelessness puts a heroic focus on all those who come here: anyone who marks its pristine dunes with their footprints, or casts a rare shadow over its shadeless tracts. Known as a place of enchantment – it is also a deadly serious place to go exploring. Today a few tourists set out on tours to nibble at the edges of the Empty Quarter, but even on a short trip, you can return with a sense of its oceanic vastness. It helps to deflate the ego and diminish our own sense of self-importance.

23. Pay respect to lost lives on the Normandy coast, France

Distance: 140km (87 miles) Mode of transport: Car, e-bike  Difficulty: Easy

Out of season, Normandy offers enough quietude for us to end the preoccupations and worries that keep us from our true selves. Motor along France ’s most emotive coastline, where peaceful swathes of sand and moving memorials provide a living lesson in WWII history.

The powder-soft beaches and breeze-swept buffs of Normandy ’s northern coast are quiet outside of summer; bar the odd wading bird and plump harbor seal, they are deathly quiet.

I Am A Man exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, Tennessee, USA

24. Tread with meaning on an American Civil Rights journey from Memphis to Montgomery

Distance: 966km (600 miles)  Mode of transport: Car  Difficulty: Easy

A white wreath on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel in downtown Memphis draws the eye toward Room 306, marking the spot where Dr Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Dr King was one of many Black Americans who challenged segregationist Jim Crow laws in the 1950s and ’60s – and their activism transformed the American South.

A journey between key Civil Rights sites, from Memphis to Selma , drops you into this compelling history – and the ongoing story. Visionary leaders and nonviolent activism powered this fight for racial equality centered in the Deep South. Tracing the history of where it happened allows us to remember that fears are not facts and it's only when we acknowledge the true cause of our past traumas that can we stop repeating them in the future.

The 15 best places to travel alone

There’s nothing like gallivanting around the globe on your own. These are the best solo travel destinations in the world

John Bills

Nothing sounds quite as liberating as upping sticks and going to see the world, at whatever pace, and for however long you want. The freedom of only being tied to your own schedule is the beauty of travelling solo, and it seems like lots of us are catching on.

Travelling the world alone has only grown in popularity since we came out of pandemic restrictions, with many of us adopting the ‘life’s too short’ mindset, and working up the courage to just book that damn flight. And why shouldn’t we? There’s such an abundance of places to travel solo, some so glorious that you won’t even notice you don’t have company.

Of course, there are some things to consider if you’re jetting off solo. Safety, especially for women travellers , is an important element to factor into your planning, among plenty of other aspects that need weighing up. We’ve done our research: here is our list of the best solo travel destinations in the world.

The best places to travel alone

Iceland

1.  Iceland

The aptly-named ‘land of fire and ice’ is a magnet for nature fanatics, and perfect for those travelling solo. An abundance of caves, caverns, black-sand beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and geysers should be plenty to keep you occupied, as the landscape and scope of this Nordic island is second to none. The country’s charming capital, Reykjavik , is jam-packed with activity – why not add the Blue Lagoon or the Laugarvatn Fontana to your to-do list for some solo relaxation? And the best thing about Iceland for solo travellers is the safety. The country is named time and time again named  one of the safest places for travellers , thanks to low crime rates and a generally accepting society. It’s definitely one for the bucket list.

East Coast Australia

2.  East Coast Australia

It goes without saying that Australia is absolutely massive. Mahoosive. Ginormous. And while that fact might make it seem daunting, particularly for those of us travelling solo, most of the action is concentrated on the East Coast. There are plenty of classic routes that run from Adelaide to Brisbane and beyond, allowing intrepid explorers to visit a variety of exciting towns that each seem to have their own magnificent ocean view. Australians are famously sociable, too, so meeting new people will never be an issue in this isolated corner of our beautiful planet.

Botswana

3.  Botswana

For those keen to explore the wonders of Africa, Botswana is likely your best bet. The country has a wealth of wildlife to appreciate and observe, with nearly 40 percent of its land area being devoted to national parks. The Okavango Delta, Kalahari Desert and Chobe National Park are world-renowned safari spots, home to everything from giraffes to rhinos. Botswana is also a politically and economically steady nation, and ranks highly on safety indexes for African countries. This, plus the fact that many Botswanans speak excellent English, makes it a great destination to navigate on your solo travels.

Canada

4.  Canada

Canada ’s name is one thrown around most often when it comes to solo travel. The population has a worldwide reputation for their friendliness, and the country has everything you could want from a travel destination. Incredible off-the-grid adventure opportunities like visiting the Rockies, Niagara Falls and Banff National Park offer up plenty to see for intrepid globetrotters. However, Toronto is considered one of the world’s most multicultural cities, and Vancouver is famed for its unique urban design, stunning surroundings and the fact it's on the doorstep to some incredible nature. The weather? Not so great, but the people? Incredible.

Vietnam

5.  Vietnam

Vietnam ’s unique beauty and complicated history make it a compelling travel destination, particularly for those doing so alone. The country has grown into a popular travelling hotspot, and that’s led to a thriving social scene – the well-established tourist route means it should be really easy to meet like-minded travellers to journey alongside. Ha Long Bay, Hanoi and the Ha Giang Loop are three of the nation’s tourist highlights. There are also great transport networks, it’s budget-friendly and full of hostels. What more could you ask for when you’re travelling alone?

Portugal

6.  Portugal

Portugal’s most popular spots frequently pick up travel awards and plaudits alike, and the hype is not without good reason. Lisbon is a backpacker’s dream, while the dreamlike beauty of Porto attracts wide-eyed adventurers from all over the world.  The Algarve is much more than its budget holiday destination suggests, and the rest of the country is packed with stunning sights and spots. This European treasure boasts 800km of coastline, and it’s a particularly surfer-friendly paradise, thanks to the fact it’s perched on the edge of the Atlantic.

Chile

7.  Chile

In South America, Chile leads the way in terms of quality of life, and unsurprisingly, lowest crime rate. It’s the perfect destination for people travelling alone thanks to its tight-knit community of backpackers, and, of course, abundance of sights to see. Atacama, the driest desert in the world, is located in the north, while there’s plenty to see in Santiago, the nation’s capital. You won’t go thirsty either, thanks to the fantastic Chilean repertoire of beer and wine. It’s also considered one of the best places in the world for stargazing, thanks to its high altitude.

Slovenia

8.  Slovenia

Small but perfectly formed, Slovenia is a tremendous destination for solo travellers. The old ‘four seasons in a day’ adage is very much alive and well in a place where you can spend the morning skiing in the Alps before heading for a romantic solo sunset on the Adriatic at Piran. The capital, Ljubljana, is the perfect base for exploration, a city of friendly people and social spots an easy bus or train from Slovenia’s famous lakes and less-famous postcard villages. Pro tip: pick up a €15 IZLETka train ticket and get unlimited travel on the weekends.

📍 Discover four Slovenian getaways that are good for the planet

New Zealand

9.  New Zealand

New Zealand is a country that just gets things right. For one, it takes its reputation as one of the safest countries in the world very seriously, meaning travellers can explore in total security. But it isn’t usually safety that brings individual adventurers to New Zealand ; instead, it’s the dazzling landscapes, buzzing towns and cities and convivial people that make NZ the place it is. All of the bigger towns are backpacker paradises filled with history, culture and booze (the great trifecta of backpacking), and the scenery in between is staggering.

Ireland

10.  Ireland

Irish storytelling is world-famous, immortalised in the novels of Joyce, Stoker, Wilde and the rest. Spend an evening in any Dublin pub and you will almost certainly hear a tale for the ages, as locals spin yarns and transport listeners to a world within a world, one pint at a time. The friendly hospitality of the Irish guarantees good conversation, while the stunning breadth of nature here allows for tranquil walks and plenty of room to think, ideal for solo travel. Getting around also couldn’t be easier, as it looks like Irish railway services are about to be amped up .

The Greek Islands are gorgeous and lush, not to mention packed with excellent food. Each one seems ready to capture your heart and convince you to stay forever and ever. Kefalonia and Corfu are the most popular and thus offer endless social opportunities, while the serenity of Naxos and Icaria will appeal to more introverted explorers.

Bhutan

13.  Bhutan

What could be safer than a culture so infused with Buddhism? Bhutan is definitely a place to include on your list should safety be one of your top priorities. The Trans Bhutan Trail reopened in 2022 , meaning travellers can follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and monks who trod the 400km route. The architecture is awe-inspiring, and the tiny country is of course perched on the very edge of the Himalayas, meaning the views are truly unmatched. There’s also tranquil lakes, luscious green valleys and dazzling glaciers to admire. Take heed: you will need some extra cash to splash in Bhutan, as the country has a pretty steep tourist tax .

Croatia

14.  Croatia

Another super-safe solo-friendly destination is this jewel of the Adriatic. Boundless glorious beaches, fascinating mediaeval towns and relatively low prices are what Croatia has become so popular for. The nightlife is another perk of this place – the festival calendar is absolutely jam-packed, and Croatian cities are known for their cheap drinks and plethora of party spots. Eight national parks are also dotted around the country. Like waterfalls? There’s a whopping 90 of them at Plitvice Lakes,  though if you want a dip, head to the smaller falls at Krka National Park instead. Croatia is also an underrated wine producer and, of course, a hotspot for  Game of Thrones  fans.

Singapore

15.  Singapore

The phrase ‘melting pot’ is ridiculously overused, but one place that’s truly worthy of the label is Singapore . The island nation is a glorious meeting of different cuisines and cultures, with a landscape characterised by ancient temples and towering glass skyscrapers. Singapore is also incredibly safe, according to 96 percent of locals who we surveyed last year for our annual list of the world’s best cities . There are plenty of hostels if you’re wanting to meet other travellers. Spend your time soaking up the year-round tropical climate, and make sure to go on a food tour through Singapore’s  markets .

25 Best Places to Travel Alone for a Self-Discovery Trip

You want to go on a solo vacation and have the experience to yourself, but you're not sure where to go. Let's figure out which places are the best for a solo journey!

Interesting Reasons Why You Should Take a Single Travel At Least Once in Your Life

Many people believe that travelling should be experienced with friends and family to fully experience the trip. Planning a solo adventure, on the other hand, is as intriguing as that. Here are five reasons why you should go on a solo journey:

  • You can visit whenever you wish: You can completely plan a trip by yourself without having to depend on any partners. You won't have to wait until all of you have free time to plan a trip. Instead, you have total control over your trip schedule, money, and destination.
  • Experience self-planning: To stay within your budget, you'll have to organise everything yourself, including accommodations, plane tickets, restaurant meals, and transportation. You must also call to make a reservation and purchase tickets in advance. You'll learn how to communicate, organise your schedule, and manage your finances. You know how to arrange for such situations if you're going alone.
  • Learn to open your soul with people: Even if you're used to travelling alone and don't require company, you should nonetheless mingle. You may believe you know who you are until you realise you don't. When travelling alone, there will be no friends or family to support you, therefore you will have to open your heart to new experiences. This will aid you in gaining more experience and adapting to a new situation. You'll have to live in a foreign area and meet new people, but that shouldn't be a problem if you know how to adjust. Trust us when we say that you will learn a lot from them.
  • Value yourself and your life more: Start talking to yourself, determining what you want or planning for the coming days when you are alone since you have more time for yourself. Take a break since your life is already overcrowded and stressful. Gradually, you will learn that you must accept your flaws and love yourself more. During the journey, you will see a lot of new things, gorgeous scenery, and wonderful cuisine. The simple things in our lives bring us joy. Everyone has the same 24 hours, what meaningful things have you achieved in the past 24 hours? Enjoy life to the fullest and love yourself!

Tips for Solo Travellers When Choosing to Experience a Different City/Country

  • Always bring necessary documents with you during your trip

The tropical paradise also has beautiful beaches — we recommend those of Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands — for lounging the day away by the Andaman Sea.

Public transportation is easy and readily available, from trains, subways, buses, and taxis to long-tail boats and tuk-tuks. Head here in mid-April for the Songkran Water Splashing Festival to celebrate the Buddhist New Year with parades, street parties, and performances.

23. Croatia

Dreamer4787/Getty Images

If you’re feeling spontaneous, book a solo trip to Croatia, where you’ll be able to stretch your budget across spectacular beaches , rich history, and delectable cuisine. With a desirable exchange rate and friendly locals, this is perfect for any party of one. Become a beach bum on the unspoiled shores of the Dalmatian Islands. You’ll have the blue waters, white sands, and dramatic limestone cliffs to admire as you lounge by yourself. Then, eat your weight in white truffle pasta and fresh seafood before walking it off around Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town.

Anton Aleksenko/Getty Images

Egypt is becoming more desirable for solo travel. A cruise down the Nile might be the best (not to mention safest and most convenient) way to see the African country alone. Eat delicious falafel in Cairo, explore the Great Pyramids in Giza, and discover ancient temples and tombs. And then return to your five-star accommodations before sailing off to the next archaeological wonder.

There are also new (or updated) sights to see in the ancient destination. In 2022, the Avenue of the Sphinxes in Luxor reopened after years of renovations. And, be on the lookout for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which should open sometime in 2023.

25. England

Take solitary strolls along stunning cliffs, around quaint, small towns, or down urban streets in England. London is a natural choice for any Americans traveling across the pond. Traipse around Trafalgar Square , see the Rembrandts and Cézannes at the National Gallery , or enjoy a proper afternoon tea service at The Lanesborough .

But, of course, there are also the charming English towns that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. One of the best parts of traveling to England is the history and you’ll find plenty of that in its storybook castles and the industrial-age towns of Yorkshire.

10 Underrated Self-Discovery Trip Ideas

Find self-fulfillment on a getaway focused on wellness or cultural immersion.

Solo self-discovery trips are nothing new. In fact, solo trips have become so popular among baby boomers that millions of dollars are funneled into the travel industry each year as spirituality seekers embark on meditative retreats throughout the world. Oftentimes, such retreats orbit around individuals searching for an enlightened approach to their everyday existence and focus on relaxation, wellness, adventure, stress management or even romance. Resorts now offer a myriad of classes and seminars designed to enhance travelers' sense of self-awareness and inner tranquility. While the approaches may differ, the ultimate goal is the same: Provide participants with the necessary knowledge and tools that will eventually lead to self-fulfillment. So, if you're ready to embark on an inward journey, head to these retreats.

The Lodge at Woodloch

Hawley, Pennsylvania

The Lodge at Woodloch , a luxurious destination spa tucked away in the pristine Pocono Mountains, offers Hatha yoga and inner-smile meditation classes led by certified on-site instructors. The lodge also offers a Holistic Constitutional Assessment to help guests reconnect with stress-relieving outlets to continue to reap benefits long after their stay. Meanwhile, the lodge's Journaling for Self Discovery class teaches the basics of writing a journal through guided self-exploration using personal observations, thoughts and feelings. Explore new or hidden talents with watercolor painting, cooking classes and wine tastings designed to help you tap into your passions.

Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa

Paradise Valley, Arizona

This wellness resort offers guests a picturesque escape with sweeping views of the Sonoran Desert. Named for the Japanese word for enlightenment, the retreat provides an array of spa and fitness activities in an inspirational desert setting. The journey begins by setting intentions with the help of divinity cards, where guests are expertly guided into a meditation that sets the tone to connect with their inner being. Meanwhile, the Satori Adventure program beckons the spa-goer to take on new challenges: mountain biking on the region's trickiest trails and hiking and rock climbing up striking mountains in the Valley of the Sun.

The Mayflower Grace

Washington, Connecticut

The Mayflower Grace is a calming retreat in western Connecticut. The Mayflower's 20,000-square-foot spa offers forest bathing, which promotes health and wellness. A Journey of Self-Discovery: Be Good at Being You

Janice Waugh

November 17, 2022 by Janice Waugh

woman at sunrise

Solo travel serves us in so many ways. As all travelers, we learn about the world. As solo travelers we also learn more about ourselves. A solo trip is a journey of self-discovery.

Let's face it, your longest relationship in life won't be with your parents, a sister or brother, partner or friend. It will be with yourself.

From birth to death, you are with you. You will keep your many confidences, your dreams of the night, and your dreams of daylight. Perhaps your missteps (you alone can really complete any forgiveness needed) and your victories (the ones that are huge to you but too small to share) will be held as well.

Your relationship with yourself is crucial to your happiness. It is fundamental to successful relationships with others. You need you as your best friend. You need to be good at being you.

This is what takes me to solo travel as a journey of self-discovery.

self-discovery internal landscape

What Is Self-Discovery?

10 Best this, Top 100 that: we live in a world driven by comparisons.

We tend to do the same in our personal lives. Caroline McHugh, in her 2013 TED Talk,  The Art of Being You , refers to the tendency to draw personal comparisons in real life and on social media as an addiction to approval. This addiction is distracting and uses energy that could be applied in more satisfying ways.

The journey of self-discovery is the process of understanding yourself without drawing comparisons to others. It's about knowing your values, interests, needs, wants, skills, and dreams. It's about knowing your personal characteristics, including your strengths and weaknesses.

Armed with heightened awareness through self-discovery, we are more conscious of our authentic selves and better able to make choices for more meaningful, happy lives.

This is where solo travel comes in. Extracting yourself from a world of comparisons by traveling solo, that internal dialogue that draws such conclusions falls silent. In the silence, the process of self-discovery has space to take place.

journey of self-discovery involves reaching into new interest areas

Solo Travel: A Journey to Self-Discovery

Traveling solo, one has time to gain perspective.

As you travel solo, you can see how you operate when no one is looking. You have more time to look at the intentions behind your thoughts, words, and actions. Because you are outside of your normal life, you can see these intentions, assess them, and tweak them to create the life that you want. It helps you be better at being you.

5 Steps to Self-Discovery As You Travel Solo

  • Choose a destination that feels physically and emotionally safe . If you want to focus on self-discovery, it's important to go to a place where you feel safe and secure. You can learn things when you are in challenging destinations but it won't be the type of discoveries we're talking about here.
  • Go to places of solitude . Parks, libraries, art galleries, and other places that invite you to be quiet and keep to yourself will give you time and space for contemplation on your journey of self-discovery. Seeing where your mind wanders when not engaged in anything in particular is fascinating to observe and revealing in itself. Your mind will naturally drift to topics of interest about which you may be unaware. You may even reconnect with the dreams of your younger self. Consider whether they continue to inspire you or may already have been realized.
  • Leave lots of unscheduled time on your itinerary . As you explore your destination, you will naturally find or learn about things that you want to explore that you hadn't previously known about. Leaving unscheduled time on your itinerary gives you the freedom to respond to opportunities as they arise.
  • Look for inspiration in new places . Are you a musician? Explore the local sports scene. Are you an artist? Go to a science center. As you travel solo, explore areas of interest that are not natural to you. Drawing inspiration from new places can take your thoughts and ideas into new directions.
  • Spend time reflecting. Whether you're a note-taker, doodler, or audio person, spend some time reflecting on and documenting your thoughts, strengths, interests, and discoveries.

There are a number of paths to self-discovery. This post on Self-Coaching will provide some insight for you on methods and questions to ask in your self-discovery process.

I encourage you to use solo travel as part of your self-discovery journey. Take the time to learn who you are now because you are not the person you were in your teens, a decade ago, or even last year. Solo travel also offers an opportunity to explore and practice who you want to be.

Sharing is caring!

Travelling to FIND YOURSELF: Personal Development on the Road

“Travel and change of place impart new vigour to the mind.” Seneca

You bet your toga robed ass it does…

Today, in the modern world, this Stoic wisdom still rings true. Indeed, hitting the road on an adventure is one of the greatest things you can do for your personal development.

For me personally, spending my younger years bumming around India on a budget of just $10 a day, getting well and truly out of my comfort zone, being frequently cold, anxious, hot, overwhelmed, wet, tired, sunburnt, over-eagerly-energised… (Did I mention I have ADHD?)

Anyway, all this hardship, all these challenges, they went hand in hand with feeling inspired, welcome, curious, driven, passionate and creative. Being on the road is one of the most incredible opportunities to learn new skills, gain more confidence and spend some time introspecting on who the heck you want to be – and what you stand for .

And yes! You absolutely can just hit the fucking road, stick out your thumb, and await destiny to roll around the corner! Travelling to find yourself doesn’t always have to be planned…

However, if you truly wish to prioritise your personal development whilst travelling, then I got good news for you, amigo. I’ve done some thinking and I’ve put together a list of some of the most enriching experiences around the globe that will not only satisfy your wanderlust but also catalyse personal growth…

But First: Fostering a Positive Mindset on the Road

Finding yourself through travel: 11 epic experiences, your personal development passport: final words of wisdom.

Travelling can be a challenging endeavour. Life on the road comes with epic highs but also with crushing lows. Especially if you’re travelling solo to find yourself – the highs and lows are even more extreme when you’re traversing them all on your own.

In order to better navigate them, it’s essential to keep one’s head straight and understand the power of a positive mindset. There is great power in remaining optimistic . And there is power in being kind, non-judgmental and open-minded.

When you set off on an adventure, whether you plan to cycle through Europe into Singapore, wander through the chaos of Chinese megacities, or go on a multi day hike through remote mountains in Pakistan, your mindset plays a central role in how your travels unfurl.

I’m a big believer of embracing optimism, kindness, and a can-do attitude in all aspects of life. That’s what The Broke Backpacker manifesto is all about.

First and foremost, positivity is contagious . By approaching travel experiences with a positive mindset, you not only enhance your own well-being but also inspire those around you. You become a magnet for the incredible encounters and meaningful connections only the road is able to provide.

Optimism, my friends, is the fuel that keeps the fire of adventure burning bright. It’s the unwavering belief that even during tough times, there’s a silver lining waiting to be discovered. When you come across obstacles or face unexpected hurdles, it allows you to adapt, learn, and grow. It opens your eyes to the hidden lessons within every experience.

will laughing with hunzair women in hunza valley

You are constantly reminded that these setbacks are nothing but mere stepping stones on your path to personal development. And let us not forget the power of kindness.

For as you traverse the globe, simple acts of kindness have the ability to transcend cultural and language barriers. A smile, a helping hand, a genuine, curious conversation… they will create profound connections and leave lasting impressions on both you and the people you meet.

Finally, being able to find the funny in setbacks is yet another skill well worth developing.

Let these qualities guide you as you embark on the adventures that will shape your personal development. Travel far, and always travel with an open heart.

Remember : you don’t know the lives that go on behind the faces you come across. Practicing kindness and compassion reminds us of our shared humanity, and ultimately makes the world a better place, one interaction at a time.

Sit back and relax, my friends, as I dive deep into my very favourite types of transformative travel. From some of the best places to travel to find yourself, to experiences that will kick-start your personal development on the road, here’s exactly what I recommend if you’re seeking self-discovery:

1. Epic Journeys in Far-Flung Lands: Trips to Find Yourself

The thrill of arriving in an unfamiliar land, where you really don’t know what to expect, is a truly electrifying experience. Gustav Flaubert once wrote, “ Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world .”

best self discovery trips

Whether you’re navigating the bustling street markets of Bangkok or summiting peaks in the Andes, you’ll figure out more about who you are and how you tick in the process.

In my opinion, the further you get off the beaten path , the more you get out of your comfort zone, the greater the learning opportunity. Trust me, the lessons learned on these epic journeys will seep into your soul, leaving you with a treasure trove of experiences and a hearty dose of self-awareness.

2. To the Roof of the World: Personal Growth in the Himalayas

Imagine waking up to the majestic snow-capped Himalayas, sipping a piping hot mug of butter tea. Perhaps your last square of dark chocolate is melting on top.

As the sun slowly rises, turning the mountains pink, then orange, then finally gold, you realise that this same scene has unfurled day after day with little change for thousands of years… Being amongst the mountains, especially without a phone signal, is a truly incredible experience that will help you find balance and put your challenges, trials and tribulations into perspective.

Imagine, one foot in front of the other, the soft crunch of snow, the air is thin, upon the wind you hear the faint chime of prayer wheels being turned in a village just out of sight, a mirage for the ears, mayhap? Prayer flags flap above you as you walk onwards through an endless stretch of Christmas trees – no lights upon these beauties though. Only snow weighed down the heavy bows.

Overhead, an eagle whirls and weaves elegantly, searching for the easiest route, surveying its domain. You follow the winding trail, thinking of all those wanderers and pilgrims, explorers and holy men, who have walked this trail before…

best self discovery trips

Sounds enchanting, right? I wrote that from memory, shot by shot, as it happened to me in Nepal over a decade ago.

I remember this moment intimately and clearly. It is etched upon my heart. But it’s not just the breathtaking views that make this journey a transformative one: it’s the grit, the perseverance, the feeling of insignificance against the towering peaks, and the warmth of the mountain communities that welcome you.

You’ll learn life lessons that no classroom can ever teach, like resilience, humility, and the importance of living in the moment. After all, as honest Abe (the vampire hunter) put it; “ In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years ”.

Engaging with the local communities also offers a cultural exchange more enriching than any museum. Trust me, sharing stories over a meal in a mountain village is an experience that stays with you for a lifetime.

3. Volunteering Around the Globe with WorldPackers: Giving Back While Growing

What’s better than travelling the world? How about, travelling the world slowly and investing your time and energy into worthy projects that enable you to give back, stretch your travel funds further and become a part of a community… There are a few different ways to do this but the best and biggest platform I have found (and used personally) is Worldpackers .

Worldpackers are all about creating a mutual exchange of value, connecting eager travellers with opportunities to lend a hand in exchange for food and board. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about immersing yourself in a new culture and contributing to a cause that’s bigger than yourself.

shirtless man volunteering in rural india with two kids swinging on his arms

According to a report by WorldPackers, 93% of volunteers felt more competent after their experiences, and personally, I get it . I’ve volunteered a lot around the world; working in a commune in India, an organic farm in the ancient country of Palestine, a moshav in Israel, a hostel in Colombia, an adventure activities centre in Turkey, a windsurfing school in France, and many more.

Whether you’re teaching English in Cambodia , building eco-houses in Brazil, or working on organic farms in Italy, you’re not just making a difference – you’re learning new skills and meeting interesting people. It’s a win: win.

4. The Digital Detox: Unplugging from the Digital World

Now, let’s shift gears and head away from screens and into the wild. As we get caught up in the digital world, it is easy to forget our roots, our connection with nature. Heading deep into remote corners of the world offers a chance to reconnect and for a much-needed digital detox.

Imagine exploring the wild vastness of Africa for example. When you’re out there in the wild, watching the circle of life unfold before your eyes, you gain a new perspective.

You understand the fragility and the resilience of life, the rhythm of nature, and the beauty of a world untamed by technology. Plus, there’s nothing like learning resilience from the formidable Maasai warriors, whose lives are a testament to the power of adaptability and the strength of community.

Whilst I have not yet really travelled around Africa (just Morocco and a short stint in Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro), it is high on my list of places I am keen to visit and explore… Every year, I head into the mountains and take a few weeks away from my laptop.

I use my two-phone system , so I can get away from work, distraction and stress and reconnect with myself, my purpose, my goals, my breath. This time is non-negotiable for me and I do it every year to recharge.

It is always incredibly valuable. And, whilst I sometimes experience anxiety from being away from my phone or laptop, this passes, I breathe, I journal, I watch the mountains turn pink as the sun sets… It puts what does and doesn’t matter into perspective.

5. Hitchhiking Adventures: Taking the Road Less Traveled

Hitchhiking might sound like a relic from the past or a scene from a Kerouac novel, but it’s a fantastic way to meet locals and embrace unexpected experiences – it has been one of the best experiences of my life.

Hitchhiking may be less common these days but is still very much alive in many parts of the world! It’s about the thrill of the unknown, the kindness of strangers, and the stories shared between the driver and the hitchhiker.

best self discovery trips

Henry David Thoreau once said, “ Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. ” Well, hitchhiking can sometimes literally get you lost , but it’s in these unexpected detours that you find the best adventures and really get to use travel to discover yourself. Plus, the characters you’ll meet and the stories you’ll hear… let’s just say they’re priceless.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

6. The Art of Travelling Sloooooow……

As many a broke backpacker will know, to travel cheap often means to travel slow . And to travel slow means to truly soak in the vibe of a place and learn more about the culture of where you actually are slowly meandering through.

Perhaps the ultimate example of slow travel that still puts a SHIT TON of miles under your belt is the Trans-Siberian Express. It’s a journey I have always wanted to do.

Picture this; Getting to see much of the vast expanse of Russia, right from Moscow’s buzzing metropolis, via frozen lakes and endless prairie, past the tribes of the Steppe and onwards to the tranquil shores of the Sea of Japan. So, if you can afford the ticket, hop on the Trans-Siberian Railway – the longest railway line in the world.

A journey on this iconic railway isn’t just about the destinations you’ll tick off your list: it’s about embracing the discipline of slow travel. As the landscape changes outside your window, from bustling cities to serene countryside, from mountains to lakes, you’ll find yourself reflecting, introspecting, and growing. It’s this gradual transition that teaches you adaptability and the art of savouring the journey – essential life skills in our fast-paced world.

7. Working Online: The Freedom of Digital Nomadism

In the age of the internet, work is no longer a place; it’s an activity. More and more people are ditching their desks to embrace the freedom of digital nomadism . It’s not just about working from exotic locations (though that’s a significant perk); it’s about mastering the art of balancing work and life, fostering creativity, and becoming an entrepreneur in your own right.

Starting an online business isn’t just a career move; it’s a crash course in real-world skills, from marketing and sales to customer service and finance. A report by MBO Partners showed a 49% rise in the digital nomad population in the U.S. between 2019 and 2020. This lifestyle might seem challenging at first, but remember, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone,” as Neale Donald Walsch famously said.

will hatton working in chiang mai

Ultimately, working remotely, especially if you build your own business , is an incredibly rewarding experience. It can be fucking tough but hey, if you are already backpacking the world you will, ultimately, have a lot of downtime – use that downtime wisely, start a passion project, learn a skill, launch a business.

Take risks, lots of risks. Fail young, fast and cheap… learn, and come back stronger. Whilst it IS hard to be successful at building an online business the truth is that the bar is low… most people simply don’t have the work ethic or the focus to be able to compete.

If you can be even a little bit of a savage, you will crush it. Work hard, work consistently, be optimistic, forge your dream life… travelling to find yourself may even lead you to find a new career.

8. The Ultimate Workation: Balancing Work and Play in Bali

If you’re still wondering how to strike the perfect balance between work and wanderlust, let me introduce you to the concept of a ‘workation.’

And there’s no better place to start than Bali, an island that’s become a hotspot for digital nomads and the place I personally hang my hat (and accumulate doggos, six so far). Amidst the lush rice fields and serene beaches, you’ll find next-level co-working spaces teeming with aspiring entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and remote workers from across the globe.

But it’s not just about work:

  • It’s about embracing the local Balinese culture, with its focus on balance and harmony, and letting it influence your personal and professional life.
  • Engaging with the digital nomad community here, you’ll learn about diverse ways of living and working, thus broadening your worldview.
  • And enriching your personal growth journey.

And of course, it helps if you have a spot to aim for… Introducing Tribal Bali, the islands’ very first custom-built co-working hostel of which I am a co-founder, come find me down there and say Ahoy!

9. Language Learning: Expanding Your World View

Learning a new language can be challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable. Immersion experiences in Latin America are perfect for those seeking to expand their worldview and get fluent with the local lingo so you can chat up the local hotties. When you learn a new language, you gain access to new cultures, new perspectives, and new opportunities.

According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, living abroad can lead to a clearer sense of self. Learning a new language can contribute significantly to this. Immersing yourself in the language and culture of a foreign country allows you to gain insights into how people think, behave, and communicate.

best self discovery trips

Personally, I really struggle with languages but the handful of words I have in Farsi (Iran) and Urdu (Pakistan) always help me crack a smile, break the ice and make new best friends when in these amazing parts of the world. Since I was married to an Iranian for a few years, I know a few hilarious phrases which I shall probably best not repeat here.

10. The Camino de Santiago: A Walk Towards Self-Reflection

The Camino de Santiago isn’t just another one of those amazing hiking trails ; it’s a transformative journey that draws pilgrims from all walks of life and I am determined to get there myself in the next couple of years. Whether you’re trekking it for spiritual reasons, personal growth, or the pure love of adventure, the Camino is a masterclass in self-discovery.

Each step along this ancient path is a metaphor for moving forward in life, overcoming obstacles, and embracing change. The camaraderie among the pilgrims, the simplicity of life on the trail, and the stunning landscapes you’ll encounter offer invaluable lessons in resilience, gratitude, and mindfulness.

As Marcel Proust said, “ The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. ” The Camino is a vivid testament to this, promising a journey that’s as inward as it is outward.

It’s the ultimate place to start discovering oneself, masquerading as a sexy hike.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

11. Meditation Retreats in Asia: A Journey Inward

Meditation has been practised for thousands of years as a way to cultivate inner peace, mindfulness, and compassion. Today, meditation retreats in Asia offer the opportunity to delve deeper into this ancient practice and discover its transformative power.

As Henry David Thoreau once said, “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” Meditation retreats in Asia offer the chance to disconnect from the distractions of daily life and focus on self-reflection and personal growth.

With experienced teachers and beautiful natural surroundings, these retreats can be a life-changing experience, and can certainly can be a clear cut way to get into self discovery through travel. My ex-wife Nina swears that her silent 10-day Vipassana retreat was one of the most important experiences of her life.

Travelling to find yourself is not just about seeing new places and having fun. It’s ultimately the perfect canvas on which to paint your own story of personal growth and self-discovery.

The ideas in this post are just a few specific suggestions to get your creative travel juices flowing. Ultimately, you don’t need to hike the Camino or do a silent retreat to grow as a person but I have personally found that having a specific goal or framework often offers me the best chance for introspection and development.

Really though, I’m just a big believer in getting out of one’s comfort zone – if you do that, and you manage to do it without dissociating and numbing yourself (alcohol/phone use / whatever), to be present with your discomfort, to ride with it, to roll with it, to understand and accept it and to realise it isn’t scary, it makes you stronger, this is when you grow…

It’s time to step out of our comfort zones, explore the world, and discover the endless possibilities for personal growth that await us.

9 Life-Changing Ways to Find Yourself With Solo Travel

Award-winning blogger and lifestyle writer

Woman Looking Through Window While Traveling In Airplane

If you're inspired by movies like Wild, Tracks, or plan to eat-pray-love your way to purpose and contentment this spring break, you might be feeling the need to venture out in search of your highest self. No matter your destination, it's all about what you pack. The path to finding your purpose is a steep one, both challenging and revelatory, unique to every individual yet universal in certain lessons and necessities. So regardless of whether you're planning a one year trip around the world, or just amping up to finally make that cross-country move or climb the corporate ladder at your dream job, these are the tools you'll need.

Disclaimer : This is not for the weak of heart. This is not for anyone looking for quick fixes, or ways to bypass struggle to reach success. These are not life hacks, because you can't cheat your way into happiness and fulfillment. This is for people who truly, whole-heartedly desire to become the best and most authentic versions of themselves. And if you've made it this far into the article, this is for you.

Solo Travel for Self Discovery

What To Bring:

Your doubts, fears and insecurities Pack these right on top. Put them at the front of your mind where you can't avoid them. Even if you don't realize it now, you're toting these bangles and shackles around with you all day, every day. They are present in your decision making, your conversations, even your body language.

In your journey toward becoming your best self, you'll need to confront your fears and doubts, and break them down so you can break through them. You won't be able to pretend they aren't there, and you won't be able to overcome them if you are denying their existence. At times, acknowledging your fears and doubts will be as simple as saying "What am I scared will happen? What am I insecure about right now?"

Working through and facing fear will make you stronger, more aware, and happier. Why? Because when you take your power back from fear, you outgrow fear's cage and step back into your own potential.

Your dreams Not just your ambitions, not just your goals, not just a list of to-dos along the way. Bring your dreams. Bring your wildest fantasies about how magical life could be and all that you're capable of doing, healing from, creating, or overcoming. Do not be afraid of your dreams, and do not be scared to share your dreams with others. Do not downplay your dreams. It's the difference of using a map of your hometown or a map of the entire world upon which to set your compass. Your only limits are the boundaries you place upon yourself.

Patience Not everything happens over night. Remember, though, that everything happening right now, struggle or success, is all part of the process. Success only happens in it's rightful time, when everything lines up.

Openness and Willingness You don't have all the answers, that's why you're out searching for them. Part of going on the journey toward finding yourself or living up to your potential is realizing that chances to learn and evolve are absolutely everywhere. As such, anyone and anything can be your teacher. You do not have all the answers, which might be a damning position to take in terms of social circles, but it's a liberating position to take in life.

Be open to messages from the universe that will guide you along the path. Be receptive to lessons and wisdom that comes from unlikely places. And remember: you are always a student of life first. There is always something to learn, something to see, something to admire.

What to Leave Behind:

Other People's Opinions And their best friend, your perception of other people's opinions. What you think another person is thinking is typically wrong, ill-informed, or leads you to do stupid things with the expectation of approval from others. And none of it does you any good.

A Hope For Fame or Recognition On my solo-trip to India, my digital camera lost all battery power during my flight. I had no way of taking pictures with it, which in the end served me to open my eyes, pay attention, and make memories only for myself, not for Facebook . This seemingly challenging mistake that turned out to be a life-changing lesson in presence.

Humility does much more than greed ever will. Remembering that you are part of a whole, that your actions should benefit or inspire another, and that no one gets to the top without the help of other people will keep you humble, connected, and moral. A want for glory or praise will only get you loneliness.

Excuses Excuses take much more work than action ever does. To have excuse, you must first come up with the excuse, then subscribe to it, and finally say it out loud over and over in all the areas you'd otherwise be getting sh#t done. Creating, believing and speaking excuses are a waste of your precious energy, energy you will need on this wondrous journey forward. If you want it, go after it.

A Reliance on Comfort You will have to become comfortable with discomfort. You will have to make friends with struggle, pain, and welcome exhaustion. You will have to invite the feelings of fear, doubt, uncertainty, and newness with open arms. You will have to work very hard, and you will have to give up your want to be lazy and comfortable in your old ways. In other words, you will have to come to terms with the fact that hardship is a blessing, especially the hardship of examining your true self, because it's where the greatest and most profound truths about your true self and your power is revealed.

Expectations It will not turn out the way you expect it to. It will not feel the way you expect it to. It will not look, taste, or smell the way you predict it to. This is one of the many incredible gifts of life: that everything is always, continually a surprise. Have no expectations, except the expectation of yourself to do your absolute best. Let everything else unfold in the miraculous experience we call living.

Why A Solo Self-Discovery Trip Is A Must For A Bucket List

I have been on a few international solo trips in the past seven years, but they were not as impactful as the one-month trip I took last year when I turned 30. The difference was the purpose — I went on that trip to discover myself. With one purpose in mind and no plan for action, I learned so much more about myself in that one month than what I learned throughout the duration of my 20s. But, this realization only came after a year of introspection and reflection.

Having spoken to several people who embarked on such trips, I was expecting life to feel different upon my return. Not only from my broadened horizons as a result of an external worldview, but more so in my internal landscape. Maybe this was inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert's book, “Eat, Pray, Love,” or maybe it came from the fact that I was turning 30 — I don’t know. But, that trip was a huge turning point — may be the tipping point of my life.

Few people are able to indulge in the luxury to take a long solo trip overseas due to family and financial commitments. People perceive the desire to travel to be a “want” and a “good-to-have.” but those who have done it will call it a “need” and a “must do” upon reflection. I hope you will consider adding this item to your your bucket list, no matter how young or old you are.

Life has funny twists and turns. I went on the trip in preparation for my solo round-the-world trip in 2016, and in the process, I met my boyfriend, who is also planning for his trip in 2017. This is another good reason for singles to try this.

In addition to wisdom, I gained energy, money, freedom and a more fabulous relationship with myself. It took a while for me to identify this, but the reason for such powerful improvement was the way I made decisions. This trip changed my thought processes and the way in which I made most decisions. The way I made basic, everyday decisions changed to a way that is true to my core being.

All of us do our best, but on what is this “best” definition based? Is it social standards or cultural norms? We need not compare ourselves with what others, like Richard Branson, are known to do, but we should strive to become the best versions of ourselves. In a foreign place, no one knows your background, what work you do or how much you make.

You are stripped of your work title, social class and cultural background. All you have left is you — the most authentic version of yourself you can be. Do you love the person you are at this point?

The best thing about a solo-discovery trip is not the big and glamorous stuff like visiting well-known sites or shopping. It is in the little details — seemingly insignificant things that can easily be overlooked. As Gary Smalley said, “life is relationships; the rest is just details.”

If I had to pinpoint the best part of Taiwan, it wouldn’t be the food and the best part of New Zealand wouldn’t be the landscape — it was always the people with whom I crossed paths. Many of people I met overseas did not become my friends or acquaintances — we were just strangers who happened to be at the same place at the same time, and yet, some of their impacts on my life far exceeded the short amount of time we spent together.

Whoever said that traveling solo presents lonely moments needs to resolve his or her self-esteem issues. There is no better way to build street smarts than walking alone in a foreign street. Having solo dinners at fine restaurants or sipping tea alone at crowded cafes can liberate oneself to a higher level of self-confidence — not the fake-it-until-you-make-it kind, but the kind that reflects that you genuinely enjoy your own company. The fear of unknown and uncertainty is always present. Test your limits, but stay safe and alive while doing it.

This experience is not so uncommon — in fact, it is actually way more common than you may think.

For the optimists, what are you waiting for?

For the pessimists, you will miss out more in life by not doing.

For the idealists, this is a dream and a way to design — or redesign — your lifestyle.

For the realists, you must try to know how good it is.

For the capitalists, business opportunities and networking experiences are out there waiting.

For the employees, you can add this experience to your already glowing CV.

For the non-conformists, this is definitely not the norm in life.

For the average Janes and Joes, it is a possible venture as long as you believe in yourself.

Solo Travel: The Ultimate Journey of Self-Discovery

best self discovery trips

Three years ago, just before the pandemic hit, I embarked on my first solo trip to London. Little did I know that this trip would be the beginning of a journey that would take me across Europe and North Africa. Each trip turned out to be more amazing than the last, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience solo travel in all its glory.

Initially, I started traveling solo out of necessity, as none of my friends were willing to travel with me. However, I soon realized that solo travel was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life so far. Today, even though I have found incredible people to travel with, I still make sure to carve out time to take a trip or two by myself. I believe it is crucial for me to explore the world, meet new people, and discover all that the earth has to offer.

Traveling alone has not only changed my life but has also changed me as a person. Being on my own and wandering has shaped my personality, and for that, I am truly grateful. I now enjoy being by myself and relish my own company. I vividly remember the time I swam in a lake in Switzerland and felt a sense of thrill and happiness like never before. Solo traveling has taught me things that I never learned in school, such as how to fend for myself, use my voice to ask for what I want, be smart and conscious, stay safe, find solutions, make new friends, and create lifelong memories. Most importantly, I have learned who I am and who I want to be.

I would like to share with you the things that solo travel has taught me, in the hope that it will inspire you to embark on your first solo trip.

best self discovery trips

1. Finding yourself

The first thing you need to understand is that traveling solo does not mean that you are lonely. Contrary to popular belief, being on your own in a foreign country can be an empowering experience. In a world where we are constantly surrounded by news, updates, and noise, taking the time to truly be alone can be a powerful moment of simplicity and purity. It is an important life skill to learn how to be alone and figure out what you like when no one else is making the decisions for you. You learn to become the master of your life (a little bit cheesy but the truth).

2. Happiness in the simplest form

Admiring the beauty in life’s simple and modest pleasures has been my greatest revelation since embarking on my backpacking journey. I have come to the realization that true happiness is not reliant on material possessions or luxuries. Rather, it is found in the smallest of things – a simple backpack and a handful of clothes can create the most treasured of memories. This newfound appreciation has gifted me with gratitude, contentment, and a deeper appreciation for the purity of life, unencumbered by artificial excess.

3. Learning to thrive independently

I have lost count of how often I have shared my plans to travel solo, only to be met with the question “Isn’t it unsafe for a girl?” Sadly, there are many who believe that as a female, one should not venture out into the world alone due to potential dangers. However, if we limit ourselves to the opinions of others, we will never reach our full potential. Do not allow fear or naysayers to impede your path. While there are hazards lurking in every corner, there are also countless kind-hearted individuals to be found.

4. A profound source of empowerment

As you embark on extended periods of solo travel, a remarkable realization dawns upon you – you begin to uncover the depths of your personality and understand the true essence of who you are. Whether wandering through a bustling metropolis or traversing an isolated landscape, the experience of alone instills a deep sense of personal agency and control. Through this journey of self-discovery, solo travel imbues you with a powerful form of empowerment that bolsters your confidence and allows you to make choices that serve your best interests assertively.

5. Being more responsible

Being more responsible is a valuable lesson that can be learned through solo travel. It has been my experience that when I venture out on my own, I am compelled to make conscientious choices, such as traveling on a budget and avoiding costly dining options, luxurious lodgings, or extravagant activities. These choices not only allow me to stretch my finances further but also enable me to develop a heightened sense of accountability and resourcefulness.

6. Flexibility

It is a vital attribute that can be honed through solo travel. It is not uncommon for travel plans to veer off-course unexpectedly, and when traversing alone, the onus of adapting to these unanticipated changes falls solely on oneself. My personal journey has taught me to cultivate an adaptable and flexible outlook, to embrace the unpredictable and navigate the ebbs and flows of life with ease. Solo travel has allowed me to surrender to the flow of the universe, find beauty in the unexpected, and make the most of every moment.

7. Cultivating an open-mind

One of the most enriching aspects of solo travel is the autonomy to curate a personalized itinerary and explore activities that pique your interest. This freedom has taught me to approach new experiences with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. I have relished the opportunity to try culinary delicacies I never imagined I’d enjoy, unearth hidden gems of destinations I never knew existed, and engage with individuals whose perspectives have expanded my own. Solo travel has been a catalyst for broadening my horizons and cultivating a spirit of adventure.

best self discovery trips

In summary, solo travel has served as a remarkable mentor, imparting valuable lessons of self-reliance, adaptability, a thirst for new experiences, self-sufficiency, and a deeper appreciation for home. I wholeheartedly advocate for solo travel to anyone seeking to broaden their horizons and discover the boundless marvels that the world has to offer. The freedom to chart your own path, and the capacity to discover yourself along the way is a gift that solo travel bestows upon those daring enough to take the plunge.

10 Great Lessons of Self-Discovery And Solo Travel

solo-travel-self-discovery

Everyone has their reason for traveling and I was no different. My reason? I just wanted to experience the world and all the unique moments firsthand. There was no turning period in my life that pushed me to travel or even start solo traveling. I didn’t endure a major heartbreak and I wasn’t “lost” per se. Solo travel was never a line item that I needed to check off on my list of things to do in my lifetime. It was just the way I discovered I liked to travel, explore events as well as destinations, and primarily still like to travel today.

As an ambivert and natural-born loner, solo travel was something that always came naturally to me because it so easily aligns with my personality. I’ve always been independent, curious, and open to trying anything new at least once in life. This foundation encouraged me to travel solo and taught me a great deal and lead to self-discovery as I solo traveled.

I know just thinking about solo travel can be daunting and I know planning & booking a solo trip can be confusing. But taking that leap to execute your plans and take your first solo trip can seem like the most terrifying feeling ever. You’re leaving your comfort zone to willingly dive headfirst into a new situation in a new destination.

the journey

You start this journey sometimes like any other trip looking to escape, to heal, to be alone, or because you stopped waiting for others or just for the pure enjoyment of traveling. But it quickly turns into something else almost overnight. From the naysayers who try to discourage you from traveling solo. To your internal fear building up. To your mind over thinking about the million things that may go wrong. But you go anyway and yes your trip may be perfect but more likely your trip isn’t and that’s where the lessons come rushing in.

Day one, doubt begins to squirm its way in, and then you’re hit with the feeling of loneliness. The next moment you’re figuring out how to navigate an unexpected situation. Next, you’re questioning why? Was this even a good idea? Was it worth it? And then, by day 4, or 5, a sliver of light finds you. You’re here alone, living, enjoying, and sustaining on your own. And guess what you survived. When I tell you, that’s one of the most amazing epiphanies to have…amazing. You stop to notice that you’ve stepped completely outside of your comfort zone and made it on the other side of all the doubt, fear, questions and worry. You’ve surprised yourself with the ability to stand on your own two feet and figure it out, to problem solve, to respect and enjoy your own alone time. And in doing that you’ve discovered a whole new side of who you are and how limitless your capabilities are. This is the start of your self-discovery through solo travel.

culebra-beach-puerto-rico

discovering self

Solo travel forces you to attack your fears head-on and teaches you to prioritize yourself free from external conflicts. Sometimes it highlights your fears, insecurities, and pain points you’ve been avoiding. Or even opens you up to how you’ve been hiding behind your family/friends, your kids, or career. Solo travel may even bring about a sense of joy, peace, and self-care. But no matter what, you’re left with realizations that shape you. These are just a few of my lessons of self-discovery over the years.

Plan but know things will go wrong

And that’s ok. One of the most important lessons solo travel has taught me is that, no matter how much you may plan things can go wrong. The trip may not go as planned, there may be a hitch on your first or last day, or your trip may go perfectly as planned. And all of that is fine. The lesson here is to learn not to get caught up in the moments that don’t go as planned because nothing is perfect. Don’t dwell, don’t stress, go with the flow.

You learn to problem-solve…quickly

This self-discovery goes hand in hand with accepting that everything may not go as planned. Learning how to problem-solve not only quickly but with less frenzy is key. How to navigate difficult situations resourcefully with patience almost becomes second nature. Problem-solving on your feet teaches flexibility, creativity, how to troubleshoot, and most of all how to stay calm under pressure. Think critically, be creative, act quickly.

Become more self-sufficient

A major self-discovery that’s almost inescapable is learning just how much you can truly stand on your own two feet boldly. You’ve planned and executed an entire trip alone, flown or driven, navigated a new destination, and chosen to engage all while solo traveling. You’re stronger and more capable than you think. Independent, responsible, and you gain a sense of trust in yourself of how to be by yourself.

You learn to appreciate your own company

Solo travel also teaches you how to get comfortable sitting alone, eating by yourself, and making decisions free from others’ opinions. The result is less compromise and more openness to thinking outside of the box. You get to think… whether you like it or not. You learn why your time is valuable and respect those moments.

Learn to connect

Without the security of a friend group while traveling, I’ve learned I’m more open to connecting with those around me. Even more open to trying new experiences. I’m more receptive to building those connections that work at the moment or can lead to long-time friendships.

Understanding, a core value

Grace, patience, tolerance, compassion = understanding for the places we travel, the people we encounter, the cultures we explore, and even our journey back to home. Respecting those differences is the key to understanding and one of the biggest moments of self-discovery I am grateful for.

Appreciate the unexpected

Another self-discovery I’ve made during solo travel that I truly appreciate is that I am ready for anything and everything. Traveling solo leaves you open to experience new things or give old things a new try. Open to experience the unexpected. Something about being alone lowers your guard and releases your hesitation.

Live in the moment

Let go of any need to control your experiences. Don’t schedule every minute or force the experience. Appreciate and live in the moments you create.

Welcoming a sense that you can achieve anything you decide by re-discovering your confidence and learning how boundless it can be. Confidence to go after your passion and try new things. Confidence to find your version of freedom, adventure, and more.

Rounded Personal Growth

The biggest self-discovery through solo travel is my overall personal growth. An awaking that was and still is inescapable during any solo travel adventure. My personal growth is the sum of everything above and more unsaid. Solo travel has shown me the world but most of all it has helped me discover who I am and who I can be. Taught me how to respect those around me, care for the earth, and reiterated that we are all connected in one form or another.

On this inevitable road to self-discovery, you quickly learn that traveling is an important opportunity that many may not have during their life. You realize that solo travel becomes a teacher that some may never get to know. And you appreciate the fact that travel, no matter how you travel, is impactful and healing that opens for growth to follow.

solo travel & self-love

As solo travel teaches me about self-discovery and growth it also teaches me about self-love and acceptance. And each solo trip continues to teach me more and more about learning to love myself fully I know there is even more that I can learn. A wellness friend of mine, Ashley Nao Wellness , is the best at shedding light on how travel can lead to self-love. She shares her story of self-discovery of self-love through solo travel. Check out Ashley’s self-love journey here .

Travel became my form of therapy, my known love language, and source of self-care before ‘self-care’ became a trending phrase. Travel changed and continuously changes my perspective and stretches my mind and willingness to be open. It forces me to both check and re-evaluate my privilege on an ongoing basis while living a life I enjoy. It reaffirms my confidence, my capabilities, and my sense of freedom…it’s the essence of my self-discovery that leads to self-love.

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a place this summer where I can get away from everything. I want to spend some time in solitude and self-discovery.

I'm willing to go anywhere in the US, Canada, or Europe. I need a place that is:

*Inexpensive

*Has great landscapes

*Accessible necessities (mostly groceries)

Luxury is not a concern for me. I want a basic place where I can be left alone so I can learn about myself and the path I want to take for my life.

' class=

When I really need to "get away", I go camping. This provides all of what you are looking for, and "distance" is almost metaphorical, it can be 10 miles from home, but a still world away.

Inexpensive? Quiet? Contemplative solitude? My recommendation: focus on something off-season. A ski town in the summer. A beach town in the winter (which would require you to go to South America).

If you go outside of the USA, maybe St. Pierre and Miquelon, French territory just off the coast of Newfoundland, where I don't think there's much of an "in" season at all. Or an island around Denmark (Bornholm?). Or beautiful mountainous Slovenia (although, again, summer would be the height of tourist season). Or a wintry beach town in Uruguay.

I suppose you are also bringing books with questions you should ask yourself, and exercises?

You can go to the end of the world but if you haven't discovered that at home then it won't suddenly come to you automatically, falling from the sky. I spent a year away, hoping I'd discover what I wanted to do in life. When I came back I still didn't know.

It took a carreer coaching workshop wih multiple sessions (and a professional coach and other participants to learn from) to find out.

As for 'discovering yourself'... You will discover what solitude does to you. That is only part of reality and the world and your personality.

What the others say is true.

i had a friend who took off and travelled the UK for a year without contact to home. He returned and said 'everywhere is the same because I took me with me'. In other words you can only discover yourself by working on who you are and why you are disatisfied with that. It takes thinking and changing.

You can travel and find out how you can cope with being away. That requires you to go somewhere out of your comfort zone whether its a huge crowded city or a desert.

I find walking somewhere beautiful with long vistas, beautiful rivers are good for thinking things out but day to day is the time I realise where I fall short and where improvements need to be made.

Here we have the National Trails and walking the South West Coast Path on your own is a test of self resolve, determination and some outstanding beauty. Stay B&B or camp.

I think, for some, self discovery is more akin to self acceptance. And solo travel can be very helpful in this regard, because you find yourself to be capable, acceptable, and a part of a larger whole. You learn to rely on your own abilities outside of the context of your "normal" life, and its expectations of you.

Either way, good luck!

Well what I learned on various solo trips is how new people view me, what first impression I make. And I could try out parts of my personality that I used to feel a bit scared about, of trying them out in front of people who already knew me.

You don't even need to *travel* solo for this, you can study abroad, or get a new job at home, even join a new sports team or photography course and you will learn about yourself by the way new people react to you, to the first impression you give off.

But Hurricaneseye is talking about 'being left alone'. That will not teach you so much, except how you cope with being all alone without other people around you. In that case the camping at 10 miles from home as Sorefeet suggest, has the same effect.

Without any guidance (by a pro or a book or whatever), your mind will just go in circles about 'who you are' and 'what path you want to take'.

Maybe it's a NA thing, but for some Canadians (and Americans), time alone in the wilderness is very "soul searching". It is an experience well told by R. Waldo Emerson (USA) and Farley Mowat (CDN). And it is self discovery through shutting out the "noise" of daily life and the relationship norms we surround ourselves with.

Interesting.

Okay, I guess there is some more to it than I thought, and if you're the type for it, it can teach you more about yourself. Depends on what kind of answers you hope to discover as well.

I do wonder if the OP even reads the answers though.

"I do wonder if the OP even reads the answers though." Ha!

"Depends on what kind of answers you hope to discover as well." And how open you are to accepting them!

best self discovery trips

I used to spend an entire month in rural Scotland by myself and loved it. Each year was a different remote location but usually a reasonable hike to a village for a pub and provisions. It was a magical experience and full of self discovery. I did not get lonely, I was never bored, and felt it was a gift to my well-being and I was extremely fortunate to have those opportunities & experiences in my life. It was "me" going outside my comfort zone, I am better for having done it.

Your Guide to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

By Jenny McCoy, C.P.T.

olympic rings in Paris

Whether you’re a casual sports fan , a rabid must-watch-it-all viewer, or simply curious about what all the chatter is about, the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics is an event you’ll definitely want to mark on your calendar.

This historic international competition brings together the best of the best athletes from around the world for a thrilling few weeks of competitions, rivalries, and can’t-miss cultural moments. An anticipated 10,500 athletes across 32 sports will soon flock to France for the 33rd edition of the Summer Games, and trust us: You don’t want to miss any of the action.

With that in mind, we compiled the all-inclusive guide below to answer all your important Olympics questions. From intel on when and exactly where the Games take place to key stats on the different sporting events and how to tune in from home—plus a whole bunch more—here’s what you need to know. Let the countdown to Games begin!

So, when are the Olympics?

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will officially run from Friday, July 26, to Sunday, August 11, with the opening and closing ceremonies happening on those dates. A few sporting events, including handball, soccer, and rugby, will kick off earlier, on July 24, but the bulk of the competition will take place in between the opening and closing ceremonies.

And where exactly will the Games be held?

You’d expect all the events for the Paris Olympics to take place in, well, Paris. But here’s the twist: Competitions will actually be held throughout France, plus one will actually be in Tahiti (!), an island that’s part of French Polynesia. There are 35 different sporting venues, including 13 in the Paris area, 12 in the Île-de-France (a broader region that surrounds the capital city), and nine scattered across other parts of the country (and Tahiti).

These include a soccer stadium in Nice (a city on the southern coast of France), a sailing venue in Marseille (also on the country’s southern coast), and a basketball and handball arena in Villeneuve-d’Ascq in northern France. Then of course, there’s Tahiti, which will host five days of surfing competition off the shores of the coastal city of Teahupo’o.

Where will the Olympic stadium be?

The Olympic Stadium is the Stade de France, the country’s largest stadium, located in Saint-Denis, a suburb north of Paris. Constructed in the ’90s to bolster France’s chances of hosting the 1998 FIFA World Cup , the Stade de France will host the closing ceremonies, along with various sport events, including rugby matches and lots of track and field competitions.

How many sports and events will be at the Paris Games?

There will be 329 total events at the Games across 32 different sports. This includes breaking (a.k.a. break dancing, a brand-new Olympics sport this year!), plus a bunch of others. You can expect all the classics—like swimming, tennis, gymnastics, and athletics (i.e. track and field)—as well as more niche ones, like archery, skateboarding, and trampoline, to name a few.

How many countries are competing in the 2024 Games?

Athletes from more than 200 countries will participate in the Games, along with members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Refugee Olympic Team . The Refugee Olympic Team was first created for the 2016 Rio Summer Games to both offer a symbol of hope for and shine a light on the global refugee crisis; it formed again for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games. The 2024 team is still in the works, but the IOC website currently lists several dozen athletes as members. They come from countries such as Syria , Iran , Eritrea , and others, and will compete in a number of different sports, like cycling , swimming , taekwondo , track and field , and more.

What will the opening ceremony be like?

Short answer: pretty cool. For the first time in Olympic Summer Games history, the opening ceremonies won’t be held in a stadium—instead, they’ll likely happen along the Seine, the iconic river that charts through the heart of Paris. (The caveat: There’s a chance the festivities could be moved to the Stade de France due to security threats, French president Emmanuel Macron announced in April, according to the Associated Press .)

If the Seine plans hold, there will be boats floating in the river for each national delegation, and the athletes will parade along a six-kilometer route that ends at the Trocadéro , an area facing the Eiffel Tower. That’s where the ceremonies will wrap up with several final shows and Olympic protocols.

What’s especially neat is that the opening ceremonies will be free to some 220,000 spectators, who will be granted access to watch it from the upper banks via invitation, the AP reported in March . (Originally, Olympic organizers planned for the event to be open to the general public, with no tickets required for most spots, but the French government scaled back those plans in March over concerns about logistics and security, per the AP .) Access to certain up-close areas along the river, though, will require paid tickets, which can get pretty pricey.

This all sounds so great that I kinda want to see it in person. Can I still buy tickets?

Eager to catch all the action IRL? You can buy tickets to the Games through the official ticketing website . The price varies widely based on which events you’re eyeing—for example, as of press time, tickets to certain soccer matches were as cheap as 24 euros while prime seats for the opening ceremonies cost a whopping 2,700 euros a pop.

Keep in mind: Tickets for the Games are only sold through the official ticketing website, meaning no other platforms are authorized to sell them. So, if you buy them from another source, there’s a chance it could backfire—you may not actually receive the tickets or they may not actually be legit. That would obviously be a a big bummer, which is why it’s probably wisest to just go through the official channels.

A trip to France isn’t in the cards right now. I can watch the Olympics at home, right?

Absolutely. NBC is the official US network, so it’ll be hosting all US coverage of the 2024 Games—-from live broadcasts of competitions throughout the day to nightly recaps of highlights.

You can watch via your local NBC channel, USA Network, GOLF Channel, CNBC, E!, Telemundo, and Universo, or stream coverage through a subscription to Peacock Premium, which will cost you $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year (plus tax). Another option: Access live streaming coverage, highlights, and commentary via various NBC platforms, including NBCOlympics.com, NBC.com, the NBC Olympics app, the NBC Sports app, and the NBC app. Here’s a detailed schedule of when all the events are happening.

Will the time difference in Paris mess with watching the Games?

Potentially, depending on your schedule. Paris time is six hours ahead of Eastern Time here in the US, and nine hours ahead of Pacific Time. That means for us folks tuning in from North America, many of the live events will be held in the wee hours of the morning and during the earlier part of the day. So consider setting your alarm (and maybe brew some extra coffee) to catch any must-watch live events as they unfold in real time!

So…once the Paris Games are in the books, what comes next?

We still have plenty of competition to look forward to in France, but if you’re already wondering what happens after 2024, we’ve got you covered there too. Let us pass on the exciting news: The next iteration of the Summer Olympics will be held in the US— Los Angeles to be exact —in July 2028! So if you’ve always wanted to watch the Olympics live, well, now might be a great time to start planning and saving for a California trip.
